Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me.
Starting point is 00:01:40 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Best of Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. This is the best of the herd with kids. Colin Cowher on Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. It is a Thursday NFL tonight, live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:02:36 This is The Hurt. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. We're on Fox Sports Radio and right here on FS1. One hour from now, just about as good a segment as we do, the great Greg CoSell stops by to break down what we saw last week and what we'll see this week if you bet games, you play fantasy or just love it.
Starting point is 00:03:03 It's our NFL meat sandwich. No fluff, no frills, one hour from now. Greg CoSell stops by Bengals Browns tonight. Joy Taylor, how are you? I'm great. I plan on being on my couch from about 4 p.m. Pacific on. That's where you can find me. Game two tonight.
Starting point is 00:03:21 plus Baker versus Burrow. That's a good night. That's a good Thursday night. It is big. I'll be grilling tonight for the fam. Big grill night. So I was thinking about driving to work this morning. I was thinking, you know, I should create a new segment on the show.
Starting point is 00:03:35 The new segment on the show I should create would be called help the herd. And I would be totally transparent with you, the audience. And I would say, okay, this would really help the show. And I'll give you an example. Tonight, Browns, Bengals, Burrow, Baker. What would help the herd tonight? Baker is awful. He totally unravels.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Getting into a shouting match with OBJ and Kevin Stefansky. He gets benched and Case Keenham comes in and saves the day. That would help the herd. I could walk in here with a hangover, three minutes of prep and do the show. That'd be the easiest show I've ever done in my life. Help the herd. OBJ has one catch. Screaming at Baker.
Starting point is 00:04:13 It unravels tonight. I mean, that's the only reason we're watching, right? Is Baker Mayfield? like who would watch these two teams why would this matter because joe thomas mr cleveland brown admitted yesterday let's read the quote i will for the radio audience tv audience we'll see it baker just didn't look very confident he didn't put the ball where he needed to go and i think it's really fair to say that week two more pressure he understands this is his year to prove it or they might have to find somebody else he's admitting it folks i don't think that's
Starting point is 00:04:51 going to happen. I think Baker will play fine and Cleveland will win. But the reason we're watching tonight is that potential unraveling. All you Baker-Mayfield fan boys, we got a power outage in Ohio last week. Nobody tweeted me. He's not a number one pick. He's shorter than you'd want. He's cockier than you'd want. He's less accurate than you'd want. He's less athletic than you'd want. You look around the league at these quarterbacks, he's not a number one. By the way, I've lost a lot of arguments. I won this one. It's over.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Westbrook and this, Baker Mayfield, I won. But Colin, there is no but Colin. The reason we're watching the game tonight is because we know Baker Mayfield is about three more crappy Sundays from their moving off. In fact, I'll make the argument tonight that if Joe Burrow plays with not even half of Baker's talent. If Burrow looks better and loses, it's 24, 23, but you come away saying, how the hell did Burrow take that offensive line and those pieces and keep it close? There will be people in the room that will go, hey, you hit on some picks, you miss on some picks. We're watching for Baker
Starting point is 00:06:09 tonight. I think he'll win. I think you'll play fine. He should. But when you, and this is what I said, back when they drafted him, if you are a first round quarterback, you have to have something that is special. Lamar Jackson's speed, Kyler Murray's accuracy and escapeability, Josh Allen's arm, Carson Wences, size and arm. There's got to be something where you're like, oh, okay, that doesn't come on. Even Paxton Lynch was a bust. You looked at his size and went, whoa, that guy can move for, you know, you could make the argument. There's a little big Ben there. There's none of that with Baker. He's a little short. He's not that accurate. He's not that athletic. What's the wow? There isn't any. Doesn't mean he can't be successful. I said, I think he's a franchise quarterback potentially
Starting point is 00:06:58 somewhere. If he gets some continuity, Cleveland won't get any. But to be a first round guy, Mahomes his arm, Alan's size, escapability of Kiner Marie's got 17 starts. 17. Are any of us? And by the way, doesn't have close. close until last weekend, DeAndre Hopkins, close to Baker's talent. It doesn't take this long. Unless, like Sam Darnold, and I understand the critics, you got a coach nobody likes, an awful offensive line. Every receiver officially this morning is hurt in New York,
Starting point is 00:07:35 and Lavian Bell hates the coach, and he's on the IR. Then you get to a point where, okay, I got to give a quarterback a fair chance. But we are watching tonight. We're not watching for Joe Burrell. He doesn't have some legacy. He's certainly not controversial. He's not polarizing. Nobody cares about Cincinnati nationally.
Starting point is 00:07:53 We're watching for Baker. And we're watching because he wasn't the number one picked. It was a reach. And we all know, including Joe Thomas. He gets out play tonight. He loses tonight. And he is losing a big chunk of the room. Don't think he will.
Starting point is 00:08:10 But that's why we're watching. So I saw this. for the people that don't get LeBron, the four on the earth that don't. LeBron James has broken the record officially in the NBA. His 16th all-NBA selection. There's so much talent in this league. Just go look at the second and the third. I mean, Kauai Leonard made second team.
Starting point is 00:08:31 So much talent the NBA has. Yokic for Denver made the second team. It's Hardin, it's Luca. It's LeBron. It's Janus Anthony Davis. Officially, LeBron is the greatest player for the longest duration. ever. I did not say the goat. He is the greatest player. Kareem is second
Starting point is 00:08:50 place in my opinion. But he has now surpassed Kareem. He's the greatest player for the longest period of time. And for the record, I'm not really a longevity guy. I've always said in baseball for the Hall of Fame. Are you great Jim Rice for 10 years? You're a Hall of Famer. I don't care if you compiled the most doubles over 27 years or the man you know you had the most seasons with the fewest airs at second base over 27 you
Starting point is 00:09:20 I'm into great a lot of people work at one job for 35 years congratulations you're content you played it safe i don't think it's bad but i don't think it translates to great lebron is the greatest player in the history of basketball on the planet for the longest duration. And it's hard to be great a long time as a business or a player, a business or an athlete. There's cultural changes. You get some bad executives. You're constantly getting poached.
Starting point is 00:09:52 You know, LeBron's teammates, he loses them, a company loses their best engineer, their best vice president. Sometimes you have bad products. Sometimes an athlete has injuries, bad teammates. But let me make this comparison. LeBron is Microsoft and Microsoft. Michael Jordan is Apple. Apple and Michael Jordan are more glamorous, more popular,
Starting point is 00:10:17 have more iconic moments. You know, LeBron, the block, we could argue over his second most iconic play. The block is it, right? Michael's got like eight of those. The hand switching here and the Craig Elo jumper and the jam over the Knicks. Michael's got like 10 of those. LeBron's got the block and then like 17 years of amazing.
Starting point is 00:10:45 That's Microsoft. Apple fired Steve Jobs, had a huge downturn, disappeared in America. Michael Jordan retired twice. Second team he was crappy. But the duration of LeBron and Microsoft, Microsoft was founded in 86 by 89, it was an economic force in America. It's never had a downturn. It is not as glamorous as Apple. It's not as cool as Apple. is not as iconic as Apple. They don't have an iPhone. But every company in America uses Microsoft of any size.
Starting point is 00:11:18 Every single one. We all use Apple. Every company in America that matters in the world uses Microsoft. And that is LeBron. I'm not arguing Go. You could argue Apple, Microsoft, what matters more? It's personal. But to go 31 years as a company or 17 years as an athlete
Starting point is 00:11:39 and have no big downturn. I mean, we knock LeBron for losing in the finals. That's the knock on him. He's going to blow Jordan away in every stat. The knock on LeBron is, well, I mean, you know, he lost that finals with Matthew Delovedova to a dynasty. That's some criticism. And I guess the knock on Microsoft is, you know, they didn't kind of missed on the phone.
Starting point is 00:12:07 but and I'm not a longevity guy and I get that MJ is more popular more iconic more glamorous more stylish I get I get the Apple MJ argument I get that and I'm not a longevity guy but to be great as a company for 30 years a power and to be great as an athlete for 17 injuries bad coaches bad owners I mean you talk about cultural changes for companies how about cultural changes for LeBron. LeBron walked into the NBA as a freight train and he had to become a three-point shooter. The game changed. They don't even look like it used to. When LeBron came into the league,
Starting point is 00:12:44 centers dominate the league. Now, Steph Curry, who weighs less than me, is now the guy that can literally change a series in three minutes. There's no arguing. 16th, first-team all-NBA.
Starting point is 00:13:01 LeBron James is officially the greatest basketball player in the history of the world for the longest amount of time. Unbelievable. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:13:26 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman. recommended it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:13:52 A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
Starting point is 00:14:21 One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories, that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do? little Kim. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:15:25 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah, literally. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS. on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:44 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way. Open your free, iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. So Trent Dilfer, friend of the show, doesn't do a lot of media anymore. He's a football coach, but he went on with my friend Ryan Rusillo on his podcast. They were talking about Green Bay drafting Jordan Love. Jordan loves the talented kid, Utah State, seen as a project. Should be noted.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I thought Josh Allen was a project, and now he's winning in the NFL, you know, playoff quarterback last year. But he's kind of seen as a project, and they traded up to get him. He didn't fall to them like Aaron Rogers did. They traded up to get Jordan Love. And a lot of people around the league, I talked to him, executives, thought he was kind of a second round quarterback, real loose. not ready. But anyway,
Starting point is 00:17:34 Dilfer talking to Ryan Rissillo on his podcast said this was a send a message draft pick. I can guarantee you in those front offices, there are some wise people that said I'm done with him just being good. We need to be great again. How do we
Starting point is 00:17:50 make them great? You think they draft to Jordan love on purpose to piss him off and make them better? Heck yeah. And you get a really talented player that needs two or three years to develop. Yeah, you do. You absolutely pull, you're a puppet master if you're running an NFL organization. If you're a head coach, you're absolutely a puppet master.
Starting point is 00:18:09 And you're pulling the strings to get the most out of the people you have. And sometimes that hurts feelings. And sometimes that's not nice. Now, for the record, Aaron Rogers isn't the only quarterback to have a prickly relationship with a legendary coach or a new coach or an organization. Now, first of all, I do think Green Bay looked at Jordan Love and they look around the league and they go, well, he's big, he moves, he's got a big arm, he kind of plays loose. That's what everybody said about Patrick Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Remember what they said about Patrick? He's a little loose. I mean, talents there, but the guy's just throwing the ball all over the yard. He doesn't win enough in college. I can look at Jordan Love. I looked at him and I thought, I'd roll the dice if I had an old quarterback. I would if I was New Orleans, Sean Payton. If I had an Andy Reeder or Sean Peyton, that's when you take a guy that's talented but loose.
Starting point is 00:18:55 You give him a Kyle Shanahan, a Sean Payton. You give him an Andy Reed. So I do think Green Bay liked him. but what adds credibility to this for me is not just the Jordan love pick because I could see you saying Aaron's declining, he's getting old, he's had injuries, this kid's a project, we think Eric can play for three or four more years. But not drafting a receiver in this draft, it was the greatest wide receiver draft of my life. There'd never been a time people said 40 receivers could get drafted. Then take one. I'll give you an example.
Starting point is 00:19:28 It's the combination of the two. So my wife occasionally will take out a garbage bag from the garbage in the kitchen, cinch it up, and just put it out. And the message is, honey, this is heavy. Could you take it out? Doesn't do it a lot, but does it occasionally. But if my wife did that one morning where she took a garbage bag in the kitchen, cinched it up, put it there, and then also put a rake right next to my bed,
Starting point is 00:19:55 she'd be saying, get your lazy butt and help around the house. You're not doing enough. You're not doing enough. Yes, she put a rake next to the bed and the garbage bag out. That is a message. That is, you-hoo, yard, you've got eyes, see them, and the garbage thing. One, honey help me. Two, you've gotten lazy.
Starting point is 00:20:17 I need help around the house. It's one thing to go get Jordan loved. I can argue it. He's talented. Look around the league. He looks a little like Patrick Mahomes. He plays like Patrick Mahomes. Aaron's had some injuries.
Starting point is 00:20:28 We don't want to be held. In 2022, not having the next guy. But then not take a wide receiver. Folks, Devante Adams is great. He's been hurt. He rolls an ankle. You're no longer a Super Bowl team in Green Bay. And this organization is not Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Their standard in Green Bay is winning Super Bowls. The standard in New England, the standard in Pittsburgh, the standard in Philadelphia, the New York Giants. They're Super Bowl franchises. They've been there a lot often. not getting a receiver with the move up. That's saying, Aaron, we're kind of tired of the attitude, holier than now, passive aggressive, shots in the media.
Starting point is 00:21:14 Kind of tired of it. Let's go. You're on the clock. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Bill Belichick spent two, three minutes yesterday, talking about Russell Wilson. I've said this for years. Steve Young and Russell Wilson were great,
Starting point is 00:21:30 but there were circumstances around them that people didn't acknowledge it. Joe Montana, Bill Walsh, that's all we talked about, and Jerry Rice. And so by the time Steve Young got there, he had no chance. He was unbelievable. He was unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:21:43 But Walsh is a genius. You'll never be Joe Montana. Russell Wilson walks in with a very popular coach, Pete Carroll, Marshawn Lynch. The defense had a legion of boom. And all of a sudden, it's like, oh, Russell Wilson, by year two, it was Russell's team. He was the reason they were winning.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Carroll had been fired twice in the NFL, 14, 18 in Seattle. Russell, he had defense. He had March on. Russell changed everything. And so Belichick has faced him three times. Twice, Russell Wilson has beat the coach in the NFL, Bill Belichick, who humiliates young quarterbacks. Russell has owned Belichick.
Starting point is 00:22:19 Should have beaten him a third time. If not for one pass, he'd be three and O against him. That's the Malcolm Butler pick. So, you know, Belichick doesn't talk about anybody. yesterday on and on and on and on about Russell Wilson who Bill faces this week. This guy is a tremendous player. Honestly, I think he's, you know, in a way maybe underrated by the media or the fans. I don't know, but I mean, I don't really see anybody better than this player.
Starting point is 00:22:46 He can do everything. He's got obviously great leadership, playmaking skills. He plays very well in the most critical situations in the game with his decision-making. running, passing. His passing numbers are extraordinary. You put him up against anybody since he's been in the league, literally anybody. Yeah, and there's two geniuses now, Belichick and me.
Starting point is 00:23:11 It'd be nice to get a little support over here on him. He was great in Reek 1, by the way. 31 to 35. Russell Wilson was unbelievable. And, you know, I was saying the other day, I said this Monday, is I really believe there's just really to me, Let's just talk good quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:23:28 I'm not going to waste time talking about Kirk Cousins. I'm talking about the really good quarterbacks in the league. To me, there's just two tiers of them. There's the oh my God tier. There's three guys. Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson. They do stuff you can't prepare for. They're absurdly dynamic.
Starting point is 00:23:44 It doesn't matter what your game plan is. And they're all, this is key. They're all getting better. They're all getting better. The next group is what I would call special. They've carried teams. They can still carry teams. They're unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:23:58 They're going to be Hall of Famers. But there's an age issue, a durability issue, maybe a little bit of an attitude issue, a too many bad halves. Deshaun Watson's not quite, I think, a little too inconsistent. And that would be my special group, and that is Aaron Rogers would be the first one in it. Breeze, Brady, Ben, Deshaun, and Carson Wentz. Everybody else in the league, if I'm a general manager and you call me up, I'd take the call. I like Gropolo, but I take the phone call.
Starting point is 00:24:28 I mean, they took the phone call. They were going to get Tom Brady for him. Everybody else in this league, even guys that are pretty good, right? Like we think Jimmy Gropolo is pretty good. Some of you do, some of you don't. I take a phone call. I'm not taking phone calls on those guys. I take a phone call.
Starting point is 00:24:42 The only other player, in fact, and I need about a half dozen more games, that's it. I need about six more football games. The only other guy that I think is in. that and very soon is Kyler Murray. He's doing it and here's what's impressive about him. They're not babysitting him. They're not babysitting him. They've given in the playbook, Carious. Forty throws, go. They've given him, it's the Andrew Luck thing. We're not real good. Carious. Teams will tell you what if they really respect you. Like the New York Giants got Eli Manning, good luck. Here's the playbook.
Starting point is 00:25:25 The Colts got Andrew luck. Good luck. Arizona, Kyler Murray. Here it is. Save us. When Big Ben came into the league, the Steelers did some babysitting for two years. He didn't throw. Philip Rivers came in the league.
Starting point is 00:25:39 His organization didn't let him throw. And those guys are going to get, you know, I mean, Big Ben's great. But when Big Ben came in the league, the Steelers are like, why don't you just, we'll run the football lot, we'll play defense. Kyler Murray, and again, I'm one of eight people in America that watches all Arizona Cardinal games. is there are things he does that are just you can't there's nothing you can do and he's not close yet to what he's going to be my guess is and mohom's said this last year my holmes is like i just figured
Starting point is 00:26:08 out how to read a defense russell wilson told me one time he's like year three midway through it i'm like oh light goes on and russell's got you know pretty sharp dude right like it does take time to see every coverage like three times so you can just identify stuff to me kiler murray is the guy to get into that group. He is really something, man. Want more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:28:55 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and,
Starting point is 00:29:21 conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions. bro. Absolutely. And that's two
Starting point is 00:29:53 different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:30:09 now. Bruce Ariens criticized Tom Brady. I tend to be, I like to plan stuff. I'm not a go-with-your-gut guy. I don't like politicians who just make it up as they go. I like politicians. who read and are curious. I like coaches who plan stuff.
Starting point is 00:30:26 I just don't even even on this show, people have said, oh, Colin, you got so many notes. I just don't think winging it is good television. Bill Maher is one of my favorite show. He doesn't wing it. Rachel Maddow doesn't wing it. Carson Tucker, they don't wing it. They like have planned and they sit all day and they write and they write and they write.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Whether I agree with them or not, I'm not a wing it person. That's just not my thing. Bruce Arian is a little bit of a wing it guy sometimes. Bill Belichick plans for everything. Everything. And we're now seeing the difference between Belichick and Bruce Ariens. Bruce Ariens has asked after a game about Brady and just kind of wings it. You know, Belichick knows the question's coming.
Starting point is 00:31:06 On to Cincinnati. And Ariens rips Brady pretty harshly. The goat questions his determination. Question the pick six. Don't question Tom's determination. Brett Farve didn't like it. at all. I think the last person you want to call out after the first game of the year is Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Now, maybe they had a mutual truce going into the game, going into the season. Hey, you know, I'm going to be hard on you. I want the guys to know that we're going to treat you the same, even though technically I'm not. So are you okay with it? If they have that truth, great. If not, I think you're barking up the wrong tree. Descension could easily enter quickly. Oh, we saw Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Comment here by Lavian. Comment here by Ben. Unravelled a really talented team. We've seen it with the Cowboys. Comment here, comment there. Unravels a really good team. Noise is bad news in the NFL. You can have a lot of stories and talk in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:32:07 It's still a talent league. We're so close with all these teams right now. I mean, Seattle's considered a Super Bowl favorite. They're at home this week. They're a field goal favorite over the rebuilding. They've had camp for 45 minutes Patriots. every little thing. So now Tom's going to have to answer questions about this.
Starting point is 00:32:24 If he goes on a two-game losing streak, Mike Evans has to answer questions about this. This is now a story. This is how to get cracks in the armor. I don't think it's the end of the world. And Bruce Ariens did address this, which is now how many days? It's four days after this little harmless comment, and we're still talking about it.
Starting point is 00:32:42 Yeah, Tom and I are fine. So I don't really care what other people think. So it's just what he and I think. And we left the stadium fine. we shut up today fine, so there ain't nothing to talk about. And we're on to Carolina now. Now, that was an ode to Bill Belichick. It's not just what you and Tom think.
Starting point is 00:33:00 It's now Mike Evans will get asked a question if Tom throws another pick six, which, you know, you can say this about James Winston. It's just kind of like, okay, whatever. But there is a certain way to handle a LeBron, a Brady, a breeze. You know, Andy Reid's going to find this out with Mahomes. If Mahom gets another Super Bowl, now he's got two Super Bowl. Now he's got $400 million. It got to be a little more delicate.
Starting point is 00:33:24 It's just the reality. Dan Marino is the age. Be a little, it gets a little prickly. You know, Aaron Rogers now, he's been heard a few times. He can kind of see, you can see the end coming a little bit. Tom's got a couple years left. So I just, I don't think it's the end of the world, but I just, I think it, now you have this thing out there.
Starting point is 00:33:44 It's a little comment. We're talking about it four days later. Everybody's got an opinion on it. You want to stay out of that space. I'm so excited. Greg Kosell today because I have the questions, the video he has to show us. And I'm so excited tonight, Browns, Bengals, let's go to Greg Kossel, 41 years NFL films. So talking about Brady, I mean, obviously the pick six looks like a bad throw.
Starting point is 00:34:04 But I think we've, I watched him and I thought to myself, it's not as bad as everybody's making it out to be. I mean, what did the film say on Brady's debut, Greg? You know, Colin, it's such much ado about nothing. I watched that tape. and the Saints defense was just the far better unit in that game with what they did. They did some really interesting things. It was all predicated on one thing, in my view, the fact that Marshaun Latimore just took Evans right
Starting point is 00:34:32 out of the game because that allowed them to do a whole bunch of other things. They doubled Gronk a number of times. They doubled Godwin a number of times, all because they could match up Latimore one-on-one on Evans, and Evans was not a factor in the game. Now, did Brady make a couple of poor decision-making throws? He did. By the way, the interception that was turned for a touchdown was not a poor decision. It was just a really poor throw. He threw it way too far to the inside. Jenkins was a retreating, you know, he was not retreating, but he didn't jump the route.
Starting point is 00:35:05 If the ball was thrown where it should have been, it would not have been an interception, and in fact, likely would have been a completion. You know, I said, Minnesota has lost five starters from last year's defense. and whether it's injuries, free agency, or getting expensive, I just don't think it looks quite the same as it did about two years ago. So when you looked at the tape of Aaron Rogers, was he great? Or maybe is Minnesota kind of out of that Super Bowl window defensively and just don't bring the same speed and athleticism they did last year and the year before?
Starting point is 00:35:39 Oh, Aaron Rogers was great in this game. He played as well as I think he's played in a while in terms of playing with Instructure, and he still has the ability then to make that outside of structure play like the touchdown to Adams. But Minnesota has gone through major changes at corner, and that's where the issue potentially comes in. They're playing different people. They're playing the rookie Danzler. They're playing Hill, who's, I think he's a second-year player.
Starting point is 00:36:05 They're bigger corners. But the thing that really stood out with their defense, Colin, is they played a lot more man-to-man coverage than we're used to seeing. They are normally a higher percentage zone coverage defense. That's what they've been under Mike Zimmer. They played a lot of man coverage, almost 50%. And maybe they feel that's the best way that their new corners can play. And they were, by the way, a couple of throws Rogers made where the coverage was good,
Starting point is 00:36:31 but Rogers just was so precise with his ball placement. You couldn't have handed it to his receivers any better. Okay, the New York Jets. Is it Gase? Is it Darnold? Is it personnel? is it four new offensive linemen? Who's to blame for, I thought, the ugliest performance all weekend?
Starting point is 00:36:49 Well, I want to ask you one question. By the way, I did a deep dive on Sam Darnold this summer, probably watched 350 dropbacks, and then I watched him this past week. Let me ask you this, because Adam Gay seems to be an easy target, which I don't understand. Whose fault is it when the quarterback misses open receivers? That's a quarterback's fault.
Starting point is 00:37:08 I would say so. Sam Darnold has a lot of things that he needs to. work through. I think he's got ability. I don't think he has great ability. He's got ability. He tends to be a little frenetic in the pocket. He tends to perceive pressure and leave the pocket too early. He's an off-balance thrower, which a lot of people raved about when he came out of USC that he can throw from all these different platforms. But the problem with that is, is you're never consistent with your accuracy. His feet and his eyes don't work together very often. So he misses a lot of throws. And he'll always make a few where you go,
Starting point is 00:37:42 He can do that, but he needs to become far more consistent with his mechanics and to become far more consistent with his ball placement. The reality is you can do 10 things right as a quarterback, but if you can't put the ball where you want to, you've got nothing. Another young quarterback, Drew Locke. Now, he's got weapons. They got backs. They got some really interesting weapons in Denver. What did you see on Monday night? What did the films say about Denver's Drew Locke?
Starting point is 00:38:10 Well, it's funny because I looked at all of Locke's snaps over this summer from last year, and I was impressed. And then in this game, again, what always stands out to me with Locke, going back to last year, as he plays with poise, he plays with composure both in and out of the pocket. He's pretty consistently accurate. Now, he's got a few things to work on mechanically as well. He tends to drift a little bit and open up his hips, and that can sometimes cause some problems. but from what I've seen of Drew Locke through last years, I think six or seven starts and week one this year, I think Drew Locke will be a very solid player.
Starting point is 00:38:45 There's no question about his arm. He can make every throw. I think he can throw with some pace and touch. I thought Drew Locke was pretty impressive. Yeah, so did I. Big Ben, nice to have him back. Nothing against Duck Hodges, but it was nice to have Big Ben back. And as Joey and I were talking about, nobody drafts wide receivers like Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:39:05 It's been 15 years. They've just always got a couple of good young players. What did you make a Big Ben? Do you see Rust or was it the same old Ben? No. Well, first of all, I have to give a ton of credit to that coaching staff. I thought Big Ben was great, by the way. And I was really pleased to see that.
Starting point is 00:39:22 But they played a Giants defense that's from the Bill Belichick school, do their head coach judge and their D.C. Patrick Graham, who both have big backgrounds with Belichick. So the Giants played a ton of man-to-man coverage. and that Pittsburgh staff did a great job schematically with man-beater concepts setting up Ben really nicely. But Ben made some great throws, and I thought he played extremely well. Oh, that's good for the Pittsburgh Steelers, because we know defensively they have excellent personnel.
Starting point is 00:39:52 That can't be denied on the defensive side. They've got playmakers. Now, I'm going to ask you about a quarterback who I watched him a lot in college because I'm from Washington State. And the more I watch him, at some point, I can have my doubts. But Gardner Minchu gets the football to where it should be. He maybe doesn't have the perfect size. But, you know, after a while, he's not working with much, Greg.
Starting point is 00:40:15 And when guys doing something without much support, is he a franchise quarterback? Well, you know, you know me, Colin. I do the tape. And I watched, you know, being home a lot this summer, he's another guy. I watched last year probably 350 snaps in week one. And this will come across, I'm sure, as a big, bold country. controversial statement, but I don't believe the Jaguars need a quarterback. I think Gardner Minchew can play quarterback in this league and be very effective. Now, is Gardner Minchue going to be
Starting point is 00:40:44 a top two or three quarterback and be a Hall of Famer? Who can answer those kinds of questions? But he's a solid NFL starting quarterback. That's not the problem for the Jaguars. Gardner Minchew is refined. He's accurate. He's got a good feel in the pocket. He's got deceptive movement ability. There's really nothing not to like about the way Gardner Minchue plays quarterback. How about that? Yeah, who needs Trevor Lawrence? Forget that guy. Hey, I've been doing this a long time like you, Colin.
Starting point is 00:41:13 I know how all that comes across, believe me. But I'm just telling you what the tape shows. This guy is a good NFL quarterback. Wow. You know, it's funny about this. He and Baker had the same college numbers the last year. They both ran the same offense, one with Lincoln Riley, one with Mike Leach. So it's very, by the way, one guy played with NFL guys, one guy played with junior college,
Starting point is 00:41:34 guys who are now, you know, working like the rest of us. So there is something to be said. The guy in college surrounded by average players put up very good numbers. Now, Joe Burrow. Now, again, my eyes, I liked it. I thought he was called. I thought he had a very good drive at the end after a terrible mistake. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:53 What did the tapes say? I like Burrow. Yeah, he missed a couple of throws, and I thought there were a few times he rushed himself. But I think overall, what I really like about Borough, and this was true, his last year at LSU. Actually, it was true the year before at LSU as well, is he's very composed, he's very poised. You know, we have to stop saying, too, that he's a deceptively good athlete. He's a good athlete, you know, and he can make plays with his legs, both to move to throw and to run and make plays. So I think he'll continue to get better as he works more with this
Starting point is 00:42:25 group of receivers. They had a snap, a couple of snaps, I think, where they actually had five wide receivers on the field. So I think that Zach Taylor, you know, I think who's going to be pretty creative now that he has Joe Burrow, I think there's a lot we're going to see as this year progresses. All right. There's no deep threat on New England's roster. They went really retro. They went retro, baby.
Starting point is 00:42:49 They went 1978 NFL. Were you surprised how effective it was, Cam Newton and the Patriots? Well, I think that Bill Belichick's playing to Cam Newton right now and the fact that Newton got there late. So they played to his running ability. They were very multiple with their run game. And of course, Newton can do that. The past game was probably pre-remedial and elementary. My guess is that will get better as the season progresses. But we know Bill Colin. All he's concerned about now is beating Seattle. He's not concerned about what his past game might look like in eight or nine weeks. So he wanted to beat Miami. And this is how they beat Miami. They had
Starting point is 00:43:25 some very interesting run game concepts with Newton. And one thing Newton, I think, does better than any quarterback in the league when it comes to the run game. He exaggerates that mesh point. He holds that ball with the running back and as a defense, your eyes just don't know where to go. Do you go to the running back? Do you stay with Newton?
Starting point is 00:43:44 Newton is, to me, the best in the league at that part of the quarterback run game. So your play of the day, your play of the week is with Russell Wilson. So before you go into the play, I thought he was. He's good, by the way. Russell Wilson's pretty good. And he's also ascending. I think over the last 10 games, he's played some of his best football. Talk about Russell, and then you can move into your big play of the week.
Starting point is 00:44:06 Well, I had to pick an MVP for somebody this year, and I picked Russell Wilson this year to be the league MVP. And I tell you what, what was interesting about Seattle, and maybe they'll do this all the year, we don't know. But they had 28 first downs, not including the kneel down at the end of the game. And on 17 of those, he dropped back to pass. They have not done that the last number of years. So maybe as the expression now seems to be, they will let Russell Cook. We'll see if that was just with Atlanta or whether that's something they'll continue to do. But I actually chose a play that was a really well-designed play with a great understanding of the defense they were playing against the Falcons.
Starting point is 00:44:44 So let's go to that play and start it right now. Now, this was the screen touchdown to Chris Carson. It was 19 yards. And it looks very, very simple. Okay. So what you're getting here is Carson, there's only one defender out there. We're going to show why there was only one defender out there. Because what you're going to get here formationally is trips to the field, three receivers to the field,
Starting point is 00:45:04 and D.K. Metcalf, the boundary X, the single receiver to the boundary. Now, they also align Carson offset to the boundary. Now, what you're going to get defensively is what's essentially cover three with a post safety, a single post safety. But in cover three, what a lot of teams do is they love. the boundary side of the field man to man. And that's what the Falcons did with Metcalf and Carson. They played man to man.
Starting point is 00:45:31 So as we let this start up a little bit, what you're going to see now, because they're playing man to man to the boundary side, is they're going to take the Mike linebacker. He turns his body to the trip side, the three receiver side, because he has to be responsible for any receiver crossing the field. So now what you get, man to man on that side. you get Metcalf removing the corner, and now you get the screen to Carson.
Starting point is 00:45:56 There's only one defender to play. It's the defender who's man-to-man on Carson with three offensive linemen out in front. So this now becomes an easy walk-in touchdown. So this was really well designed with a great understanding of the defense they were playing against. Yeah, that linebacker turned his hips and looked to the other side. It's all over. It's all over. But they knew that was going to happen in the way that the Falcons play cover.
Starting point is 00:46:21 number three. God, this is so much fun. I, honestly, I am so joyful for what I just saw. I'm just glad we're playing week two, Colin, you know? I know. Greg Kosell, good to see you, my friend. Thanks, Colin. Appreciate it. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
