The Herd with Colin Cowherd - Big Play Slay - Eagles-Rams reaction: Jalen Hurts is NOT a system QB, why the Brotherly Shove works

Episode Date: October 11, 2023

Philadelphia Eagles CB Darius Slay breaks down the Eagles’ Week 5 win over the Los Angeles Rams, bringing them to a 5-0 record. Slay breaks down his first matchup with ex-teammate QB Matthew Staffor...d, who for the first time this season lined up with two star WRs Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes,
Starting point is 00:01:20 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clivert Show on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast, And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. The volume. What's up, everybody, man?
Starting point is 00:01:45 It's your boy, Big Play Slate here. And I'm back with another dub, 5 and O had to fly all the way to L.A. Talking about a flight, long flight. Five and a half hours, I'm talking about cramping up, doing everything my body can possibly do all in the wrong ways. I had a hydrate crazy because, look, five-hour flight. hamstrings get tight gotta play the next day so you gotta get your body right man so
Starting point is 00:02:11 that's the only thing I hate about West Coast games they need to make it a way that West Coast teams need to just meet up halfway or something something got to give because taking that five-hour flight it's too long definitely if we're not leaving a day early you know we left on a Saturday had to go play Sunday at one o'clock time change
Starting point is 00:02:26 y'all cheating that's what it is Calais side West Coast y'all cheating so let's get into this trip we are five and out like five and oh this is the second time back to back being five and oh like this is tough this is big this is my first time ever being five and oh again two times in a row I'm talking about literally two times in row I'm never been it I'm doing it all over again right now I'm feeling amazing man I'm not going to jeeks myself we're going to continue to keep trying to win of course but for real man this is my
Starting point is 00:02:57 second time being five and oh and I've been in the league 11 years and this is wow but shout out to the offense man the offense had an amazing game, man, amazing, amazing game. Y'all know who I'm going to come talk about. The one y'all call a system quarterback. The one of y'all be up here talking crazy about saying he need this and need that and then now all this and all the third. All that bull crap.
Starting point is 00:03:20 That boy Jalen Hertz is a dog. I've been telling y'all week after week after week. Y'all been saying these teams be running these disguises and blitzes, all these new packages to stop this man. The Rams try to do it a little bit of this week. and it cost them. It cost them big. I'm talking about Jayne used his legs,
Starting point is 00:03:40 and y'all been seeing the poise in the pocket. He's back there chilling. And Aaron got Aaron Donald rushing. Talking about one of the best defensive players in the world that ever put on a helmet rushing him. I'm just saying, it's tough. But that man make it look very, very easy, man. The offense was putting up points, doing what they do.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Of course, I think they could do way better in their head on, which they will. Because we do some touchdowns. Field goals help. All points help. But I love seeing seven going to board. Other than that, man, look, offense is doing what they're doing.
Starting point is 00:04:14 And y'all keep on talking about the brotherly show. I'm talking about it's been team after team after team after team, just fail after fail after fail after fail. I mean, we do it to a teeth. And I'm trying to tell y'all, we got technique to do it. Some people just get up and just hiking and think y'all do it. No, we practice it and walk through and everything. Like, they got technique for it.
Starting point is 00:04:39 That's why it's so successful. Not to mention, it does help that Jalen squats 600 pounds. Look, I had to Google some things that was 600 pounds. I'm talking about a Vennem machine. Picture you picking up a Vennon machine. That's crazy. A zebra. A zebra is 600 pounds.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Baby Rino. Come on now, that's crazy. That's heavy. So pitcher trying to tackle him and stopping him from getting an inch. That's pretty hard, man. So we can do it the best and y'all can't. So just chalk it up to the game and let all know that it's not cheating. It's not rugby.
Starting point is 00:05:16 That's disrespecting the game of rugby. This is different. This is football, baby. Come on now. We just do it better than y'all. Just accept it and it is what it is. And I'm not here to toot my homeboy horn. Jay Hertz in the last 23 games is 22 and 1.
Starting point is 00:05:32 Like, that's big time. Like, that's big in the NFL. I'm saying real big. And he up is showing it day in and day out, performing at a high, high level. And he does it again. He keep doing what he doing. You got to keep him in this elite conversation because this is only what elite quarterback does. Like, 22 and 1.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Like, picture you being 22 and 1. What would you call that guy? A dog. A winner. So that's what hurts is, man. Get on, man, his respect. because he's not a system quarterback. He could get the job done in any kind of way.
Starting point is 00:06:06 To all y'all media folks, all y'all ESPN guys that be sitting here telling you all that my dog is a freaking system quarterback. He is not. He is J. Hertz. The man. This week, he got a lot of guys involved this week. I'm talking about a lot of guys. And the name y'all ain't been hearing a lot that I came alive.
Starting point is 00:06:29 We're talking about one of the best tight ends in the league. come on Dallas. My boy got Dallas involved. I'm talking about he's been the quiet as one. Everybody's been warning when Dallas is getting the ball. When Dallas is getting the ball. He gots the ball. He went for easily 100 yards this game.
Starting point is 00:06:42 I'm talking about going crazy. They ain't have an answer for him. And when I say, Hertz threw a dot to AJ with the one-hander with 30 seconds left, going into halftime, like that is game-changing type of plays. And that's why I'm sitting here telling y'all, that is some elite type of playing right there from them two guys like very very elite very elite that's big time not a lot of people do that some people just throw it out of bounds take a knee some people
Starting point is 00:07:11 go into halve time and just say bump it not our offense our office go down and go score and put up seven switch the momentum now we got the momentum going into halve time which set the tone for the second half and that's why the second half played how it played that was a big time change in the game for real really big time change. And when I talk about this offense, this offense is magnificent. When I say clock management is crazy. I think an offense had the ball for like 40 minutes yesterday, 40 minutes.
Starting point is 00:07:40 I know the feeling, Rams. The Rams defense, I know the field. One time we played Washington last year at home, I feel like we were going to feel for Elva. And when I tell you, that is one of the worst feelings to have. It's the worst. You get tired, just drain, you back out there. got to go, got to go.
Starting point is 00:07:57 But man, those guys kept fighting every play they could. But how great our offense is, they will wear it down and get you tired and keep it going, man, because the run game is amazing, the past game, amazing. And one thing I can say for show, man, our team do a great job at clock management on the office side. Y'all don't seem to be improving. One time we had the ball for, what, nine minutes and ended the game. Like, it was nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, and we ended the game with the ball.
Starting point is 00:08:25 That's big time. I'm like, we don't do that a lot. So people don't underestimate that. So you got to just look into that, man. But Rams defense, man. I'm hoping y'all icing and cold tubbing up right now because I know that was a long drive because I know what happened to me. Man, look, I went home, went to sleep, cold tub.
Starting point is 00:08:41 I went to sleep with heat pads on, all kind of stuff, man, just to make my body feel back normal because I was dead tired. And the Rams had the ball, at least with like a minute and something left. But we learned from last week with the game being closed, all side kids. we all know what it could be prevented. So we went up in challenge because last week it was not a good performance at us with Washington when they went down there and scored and put us in overtime and all that kind of crazy nonsense. This week we said, nah, we go challenge, get out the room, let's get off this field,
Starting point is 00:09:12 because we do not have time for nothing crazy to be happening. So we can end this right now today and go home on this five-hour flight without no overtime or whatever could be possibly happening and say what we could have did better. so we just did it right then and got off the field and got the job done. Let's get into this defense, man. Let's get into it, man. We played a great game. I must say, man, I played with Stafford.
Starting point is 00:09:37 You're one of the best quarterbacks in this league. You know, I got a lot of respect for you, Big Tamer. You know, we played seven years together, man. I miss you, you know what I'm saying? But I'm so glad and happy for you, man. He came, left Detroit, went to the Rams, won you a Super Bowl. You know what I'm saying? You're building your great Hall of Fame career, man.
Starting point is 00:09:54 glad I was part of it, man, to be able to meet you and all that kind of great stuff. But our first time meeting, Coup came back and you had your boy Pooka. That's been on a hot race right now. I'm talking about he's been hot, been going crazy, 17 targets, 18 targets. He's getting all the targets. Stafford loves him. When I say he loves him, he loves him. What?
Starting point is 00:10:15 Second leading and receiving the lead right now as a rookie, I think it was a fifth round, maybe fourth round pick. Got to respect the kid. The kid plays hard, play the position the best way he can. man, he gets the job done at a very, very high level. And with Coot was being one of the best receivers in the league, man, not too long ago, offensive player of the year, came back healthy, came in the first game with showing out. I will not be surprised if them two guys are up as one of the best duo in the league coming
Starting point is 00:10:40 soon because those guys are very much playing at a high level. And with Stafford throwing that ball, man, look here, it gets easy. So we had to prep for these guys, man, differently. Definitely went both on my back. He had to understand who does go play, who they weren't going to. play, you know, they got another guy they like over there named Jefferson, number 12. So we ain't know what was going on if he was going to play a lot or if he not or if they go just, you know, switch the roles up.
Starting point is 00:11:03 You never know because a lot of stuff that Pooka was doing before Coup came back, that was cool position. So we didn't know if they were going to switch it over, but they did a, they found a great way to execute both of them guys, man. Sean McVay, man, he was smart dude, smart offensive coordinator for smart head coach as well. He finds ways to get his best players the ball, man. I thought it would be a little difficult for them both to be sharing the ball because they both did the same thing. But he did a great job of making sure these two guys got the ball in their hands, man, and was executing.
Starting point is 00:11:34 So we went into the game plan this week just knowing them guys are going to do a lot of option routes, a lot of great things, man, because them guys real good off leverage. They're smart players. Stafford's a smart guy. I'm sure he told them my little secrets of what I know about football. And, of course, I told my guys, my secrets are what I know about Stafford. So first half, Cook was getting on. One play, when I started traveling with him a little bit, he had one catch on me, a good seven cut. A good seven cut. If you don't know what a seven cut is, it's the opposite of a post.
Starting point is 00:12:04 So you're going straight instead of that's the post, boom, that's the seven cut. We called them corners or seven cuts. So that way he ran on me and caught a nice, nice ball, good head fake at the top. I bit on a little head fake. And then, you know, of course, staff drops a dime, catch it. Good, good ball, good ball. You know, got to give that to him. Good ball, good catch with two amazing players.
Starting point is 00:12:26 But other than that, I think going into the second half, I think he probably had what, maybe two catches for like 20 yards or so like that. Second half, it was a complete shutdown. I'm talking about complete shutdown for the run game and the past game. We was making plays all over the field. I think staff was like maybe eight for 20, nine for 20 or something like that for like 30 yards maybe. I don't know what it was, but.
Starting point is 00:12:52 man we play lights out i can say staff missed one play they i ain't gonna say missed it because it was a tough throw i don't know if five but run a bow five one time was like going across the middle had him put a little too much zip on it and you know five ain't come out to break fast enough but that could have been a big play but other than that played a good matcher i'm gonna tell y'all one thing about coop coop good coop on film people see like as he running when he get the ball in his hand he looked fast. But when he's running routes, he don't look as fast. So he gets you a little confused. But now that I don't play them enough, I know his little game playing. Cool.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Good at law you to sleep. He will put you to sleep. One play, I promise y'all, he could have scored on me. I'm talking about the band could be singing right about now. I'm glad it didn't happen. But he was running. He was close and cooling. So I'm like chilling. I said, oh, he's to sit down and break. But he hit me with like a little head nod like he was doing a post and ran a go ball. So I jumped inside to take way the post
Starting point is 00:13:58 and he just kept running past me. And staff would have caught him and saw him in stride. That would have been a touchdown. The band would have been dancing and all I went to the sideline like, what the fuck just happened? But when I do know it would happen
Starting point is 00:14:12 because he just ran a little like lazy great route on me. So it's not even like a bad, route. It was like a lazy great one. So it's mind tricking. So he real good at manipulating you. So DBs, look, don't fall to sleep. He will run a go ball. I know a lot of things. He do options and all the other great stuff. He got the ability to run a go ball and he will allow you to sleep because he did me like that and could have scored and it could have been a whole different game. But thank you, nine, for having a lot of respect for me being there's a
Starting point is 00:14:44 great corner that you looked them off. Thank you. Because. Because boy, look here. That's when your respect and your game play come in handy when you're done did this game for a long time and being great at it for a long time. Sometimes quarterback's give you the respect and give you a one look and look away. And that was one of the times because he could have scored.
Starting point is 00:15:03 A second half, zero points. Them guys didn't get into the red zone. It was a complete shutout. Like, we could have had the game really going crazy because we had some penalties that cost us. We had them backed up after a jailing caller. sack, Mr. Jalen Carter, Mr. Baby Rino's sack. Then we got a face mask penalty, game on first down.
Starting point is 00:15:26 Like, it was, it could have been a way worse game. We had a clean, clean, clean game with no penalties in the second half because we went out there and straight dominated. What we did, we had to make a lot of change because at first, the first half was a little rough, man, because Coot was getting active, Coot was doing this. So a lot of moving pieces started happening. We had a bunch of young guys guarding Coot.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Of course, they go like that match. up. Cooper is one of the best receivers in league. So I'll try to go into the slot a little bit, but the defense made was too much communication this week for me to go in there in a short amount of time. So I went there for like a couple plays and like came back into the halftime. We're like, hey, Slay, let's just play it regular because it's too much communication, too much doing this and doing that. And you ain't practiced that all week.
Starting point is 00:16:09 So we went back to the basics in the second half and y'all saw the results. I think they had a part of the total work. maybe 100 yards total in the second half. It was a great, great team effort, man, on the defensive side of the ball, making plays and getting off the field, man. But that was the main thing about us.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Maybe we wanted to be a better second half team. We need to start off that way because we start off slow. We need to start off that way because, man, that was a great performance. That's one of my best halves of football I've seen in a long time, man, definitely with elite offense as they are, with a great offense and minded head coach. That's a tough battle.
Starting point is 00:16:46 So we got to tip by hat off to us. And we hear y'all too, media. We hear y'all. Y'all always talking this mess about the secondary this, secondary that we do give the D line of praise. They are the horses on the team. They run out. They run the team, man.
Starting point is 00:16:59 The O line and the D line run our team. We run everything through them. But y'all ain't feeling forget about these secondaries and these receivers and all us. Because not to mention, you know, we've been the number one passing defense before. I know this is a whole new year. But we do got dogs.
Starting point is 00:17:14 We still got some of the dogs. We do got an all pro on the right, all pro to the left corner. We got an upgrowing safeties. You know what I'm saying? We got ballers, but y'all aren't paid attention to the audit. We got a lot of guys right now that's hurt that's been trying to get their stuff together. And we've been moving to pieces. But now the pieces coming together and it's getting done.
Starting point is 00:17:34 So y'all keep building a look at, man. We see y'all what y'all saying, but we go just continue to chill, continue to keep playing and continue to putting the hard work that we put in each and every week to go out here and get these dubs. With me being elite on this defense and definitely in that secondary, we destined to be great. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:18:23 I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reed. I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:19:50 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:20:08 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that I said, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,

I got to give a special, special shout out, man, to the Eagles fans.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Look, I'm talking about y'all travel across the goal all the way to the West Coast and we outnumbered the Rams. That thing felt like a home game. For real, I'm talking about a home game. Even when the Rams was coming out for their intro, I heard a lot of booze, like way more loud than the cheer. So it's crazy. Man, we appreciate y'all fans, man.
Starting point is 00:22:06 And that's why we go out here and play hard, man, and go out here and compete for y'all as fans because y'all are the best fan base in the world. Y'all can be hard sometimes now. Y'all, y'all are a hassle. But when I say you, when y'all support, y'all support, man. And I really do appreciate for me and for the Philadelphia Eagles, man. We thank y'all, man, because y'all really a true blessing, man.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Y'all make us feel calm. Y'all make us go all the way. Like, y'all make us want to give everything we got. Y'all are one of big times that we do the song, walking your trap, take over your trap. y'all be walking in people trapping's taking over they trap when i mean trap i mean the stadium y'all come in there fly eagles y'all i'm talking about the whole thing man so we do appreciate y'all we thank y'all man and y'all continue to keep doing what y'all doing because we need that support so moving on the next week
Starting point is 00:22:54 man we got the jacks at metlife i'm talking about the bad turf stadium yes we got to go up there this week coming up man against a great defense they got up there uh uh Jack Wilson is playing his best football right now. He's playing at a high, higher level. They just came off a win. Congratulations. Them boys, man. That boys got a win for definitely for that OC, man.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Because I heard with the OC, they was talking about him with Denver. That ain't called for. That ain't called for. Man, I'm glad they went up there and got the dub at his old team and shove it all in their face. But we come into the midlife next week, man, against a great, great young team, man, with full of energy, full of life. And we got going there and get ready to go compete, man, because they got a great team, man.
Starting point is 00:23:39 So we're looking forward to the matchup. And we got to get active, man. We got a good chance to go in 6 and 0, man. So that's a great thing about being 5 and 0. You got a chance to go 6 and O. So let's go out here and go dominate a guy, man. Let's go get this dog. Last thing before we go, fans, y'all know I got to get my questions out.
Starting point is 00:23:59 The comments, I got to, you know, because I love y'all and y'all love me. So let's go to these questions I have today. One of the questions are, what is my favorite thing besides the fans in Philly? And I must say the food. I love eating. And I'm not saying telling y'all about no Philly cheese days and that's not my favorite. I'm just saying y'all cook a little bit like the South, just a little bit. And that's what I love about Philly, man.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Y'all make sure I eat very, very well. And question number two, what is my favorite Big Man touchdown? Either the D-line or the O line. and I'm going to have to go with O-line because Lane scored two years ago I think about two years, maybe three years ago, Hurst threw my touchdown pass.
Starting point is 00:24:43 It was nice, man. It showed a lot of athletic ability to catch the ball because a lot of O-Lyman can't catch. A lot of D-Lymin can catch because most D-Ly-Lyman played tight-in and all that kind of great stuff. But if you don't know a lot about Lane,
Starting point is 00:24:54 Lane was a quarterback in high school. He was the number one quarterback in Juko, and then he moved to left tackle and became the best left tackle in the league, well, right tackle in the league. So he's pretty athletic, though. To see him do that, that's big time. Let y'all show how much athletic he really is.
