Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:00:16 breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:26 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:48 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. you just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:03 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming to her. He's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs.
Starting point is 00:02:11 This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Starting point is 00:02:32 Listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. It is a Thursday. We are jammed today. Thanks so much for joining us live in Los Angeles. This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on all our platforms today. Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio, Sirius, X-M Channel 83, Fox Sports 1. We're doing, yes, we're on FS1 today. We're doing a radio version on television. Not quite as slick and highly produced, but we're on the air.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Our podcast, thanks so much for listening. Our numbers for our podcasts are way up and our digital. We want to thank you. Many people yesterday I was driving around and walking around, and I saw a couple people. A UPS driver would stop and say, thanks for being on the air. I'd just like to say thank you. This is helping me if I can bring some normal see to your life. Thank you, and I'm glad to do it, but you're bringing some normalcy to my life.
Starting point is 00:03:47 I'd like to thank you for it. It makes my days feel somewhat constructive. And so anyway, we're both doing each other a solid here. We are packed today. Peter Schreger, 30 minutes from now, the Philadelphia Eagles just made a great move. Boy, the rich are getting richer. GMs in this league. The Chargers, the Eagles, the Ravens are doing really good work right now. Teams are getting better. I want to start with a team that hasn't been good, but I think is about
Starting point is 00:04:18 to become incredibly formidable. And we know in this league it is a coach quarterback league. Even Belichick get fired. Belichick got fired when he didn't have the right quarterback. So it starts with a quarterback. But hand in hand, 1A is the coach. Miami Brian Flores. Here's the story today from the Miami Herald. The dolphins, 13 picks, are ready to put a bunch of them together, offer them to Cincinnati to get Joe Burrell.
Starting point is 00:04:51 If I'm Cincinnati, I would do it. I would do it. I don't think Burroughs that much better than everybody else in terms of quarterbacks. In fact, I think if Tua is healthy, I like Tua. But Burrow can play. The dolphins want to trade up, and they'll give a bunch of picks to do it. So this is interesting. Most of us are products of our environment.
Starting point is 00:05:14 I certainly am. Michael Jordan didn't do anything after James Worthy left in college and before Scotty Pippen. Even Michael Jordan, best basketball player ever. Needed Phil Jackson, needed Scotty Pippen to get into the championship ring. Without him, couldn't beat Boston and Bird and McCale, couldn't beat the Pistons, Isaiah Lambier and the fellas. So Andrew Luck is rare. Worst O-line in the league, worst team, wrong GM, wrong coach, 11 and 5 as a rookie. John Elway, Dan Marino, Andrew Luck are maybe three of the most gifted quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:05:50 not winning us, not the most rings I've ever seen. They were going to win regardless. They were just going to win. I'm not saying Super Bowls, but to go 11 and 5 with a bad team, the wrong coach, and a bad GM, Andrew Luck is rare. Joe Burrow is not any of those guys. But I like Joe Burrow a lot more in Miami than I do in Cincinnati. This is different because I think Burrow is a B-plus prospect.
Starting point is 00:06:14 I think Andrew Luck's an A-plus prospect. I think Trevor Lawrence next year is an A-plus prospect. Burroughs a B-plus to a low A, meaning he's going to need help. He can't, said this about Baker Mayfield. It's just not good enough to overcome dysfunction in Cleveland. He's not. That luck can do it. Trevor Lawrence can do it.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Marino can do it. By the way, Troy Aikman's great. He couldn't do it. He was 1 in 15 until he got pieces around him. Okay, and Aikman's great. So Joe Burrow and Miami's different. First of all, it's a better free agent market. Okay, you can get players to no state tax in aqua water.
Starting point is 00:06:51 Players don't want to really play in Cincinnati. They'll go to Miami. Second of all, the division's easier. You don't have to face the Ravens defensive front. You don't have to face the Steelers Front seven. And by the way, the Browns, the Seals, the Seals. strength of the Cleveland Browns is not the receiving core. It's their D-line personnel. You don't have to face him anymore. It's, you know, it's the dysfunctional jets. It's New England
Starting point is 00:07:13 without Tom Brady. It's Buffalo that's good, but not special. So I get an easier division. I get a better free agent market. I get a richer owner. Stephen Ross, unlike Mike Brown, Stephen Ross is one of the top five richest owners. He'll spend money. Money's not the problem in Miami. The other thing is the weather. Cincinnati is cold and windy by Thanksgiving. Miami? The only thing you deal with is September humidity. And Joe Burl does not have a great arm.
Starting point is 00:07:42 It's fine. It's Tony Romo. It's good. It's not special. It's not going to make those big throws in wind. And I also think Brian Flores is a better coach than Zach Taylor. Now, we don't know for sure if either can coach, but here's what I know. Brian Flores, last nine games last year with Miami.
Starting point is 00:08:00 And their personnel, five and four. Belichick with Brady and his personnel, four and five. Miami was a better football team down the stretch than New England. I'm not joking. Look it up. And I think Flores is really sharp. I think he, I said this last year, I would have given him if I had a ballot for my top three coaches of the year, wouldn't you put Brian Flores at three?
Starting point is 00:08:26 I mean, seriously, what he overcame, what he did. So this Joe Burrow in Miami, oh, all right, that'll work. He's not going to get beat up by the Ravens front. He's not going to get beat up by the Steelers Front seven. He's not going to get beat up by Cleveland's front. No, no, he's going to face some dysfunctional teams. And by the way, we've said this before. Where you land matters.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Sam Darnold and Baker, dysfunctional organizations, losing record. Lamar gets the Ravens. Mahomes gets Andy Reed and the Chiefs. Josh Allen gets a very good coaching staff and a new GM in Buffalo. Carson Wins gets Philadelphia. What a shock. Winning records. It's crazy how it works, isn't it? Where you land matters unless you're Elway, Marino, Andrew Luck, or next year, Trevor Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Trevor Lawrence will be able to overcome a lot of junk. So this is interesting. Dolphins interested in a big, sweet, trading to get Joe Burrell. My gut feeling is Cincinnati's not smart enough to do it. If I was Cincinnati and could get six picks, drop down a few slots, and still get a quarterback, I'd do it in two seconds.
Starting point is 00:09:42 In two seconds. But, you know, Cincinnati's history is they don't take any gambles in the draft. So this is interesting. Like you thought I was going to do a show without Brady. Please, not possible. Tom Brady's goodbye call left Bill Belichie. Quote, a little shocked. Belichick told a friend who was a little shock.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Tom Brady said, Bill, I'm leaving. After speaking with Kraft and Belichick, according to a source, Brady felt like there was a huge weight lifted off his shoulders. He's excited and fired up. So we talk about this from time to time. Everybody's got a hole. There's no perfect broadcaster, no perfect athlete, no perfect coach. The four best football coaches in my lifetime, Bill Walsh, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, and Bill Belichick. But they've all got a hole.
Starting point is 00:10:45 And Belichick's hole is he lacks warmth. He won't play psychologist. He's rigid. He's not viewed as friendly and warm. And Tom Brady is all about warm. Tom Brady just chose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. over a much better roster with the Chargers. Why?
Starting point is 00:11:07 Closer to family. That's who Tom is. You watch the documentary Tom versus Time. He's a family guy. Hugging his sons. Just the way he lives his life. His sister, his dad. I mean, he moved closer to his family going to Tampa.
Starting point is 00:11:23 There were better places to go with better rosters, better offensive lines, better personnel. More winning in their recent history. Now, he chose Tampa. That's why, I said before, I never took Tampa seriously. I never even thought about Tampa. I said, I hear the rumors. And I thought, Tampa, he's too big for that brand.
Starting point is 00:11:43 And I got to go to Tampa. He went to Tampa. And this is where Parcells and Jimmy Johnson are better than Belichick. There's a warmth to him. I don't know Bill Parcells, talked to him six or seven times, maybe more. I do know Jimmy Johnson, I think, fairly well. there is a warmth to him. I've stood next to Jimmy and seen him get emotional more than once.
Starting point is 00:12:06 He's got incredibly close football friends of Bradshaw and Dave Wonstadt. They tell hysterical stories. Every Sunday when I come into Fox, when I do that weekend Fox NFL kickoff show with Gonzalez, Vic, Crystal Thompson, and Peter Schrager, when I do that show, first thing I do every time, I go over and talk to Jimmy Johnson for about 15 minutes before I go into my production meeting. Jimmy's fantastic. And there's a warmth to Jimmy. and Bill Parcells. They're psychologists.
Starting point is 00:12:31 The other was two days ago, three days ago this weekend, was it Sunday or Monday night? I watched the two bills. It was Belichick Parcells a 30 for 30. And my takeaway on this is that Parcells, you know, Parcells is verbal, and he's a talker, and he laughed at himself, and he was embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Bill is stoic. Bill grew up with a mom that spoke seven languages and a dad that helped create scouting. It's a very academic childhood. Academics can be cold. Academics can be rigid. Academics are data, research, and fact-based. Sometimes Belichick is cold.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Tom Brady is warm. And if you listen to players, how often have I brought a player on my show in the last two years, three years? And when you talk about their relationship, Andy Reid's a prime example where they'll say about Andy Reid. Chris Jones said this. Who do we have? Frank Martin said this. They're like, you know, Andy cares about me. Andy cares about me.
Starting point is 00:13:26 It matters. I mean, don't you. I don't want to think your boss cares about you, you know, beyond the money you produce for him and the revenue and the ratings and the trophies you produce for him. What kind of matters? You want to know they care about you. And that's the whole in Belichick's game. He's not pro player. He doesn't have a lot of warmth.
Starting point is 00:13:45 He's academics do a fault. The socialization part. I mean, unless you live in New England, many people didn't even know until a couple years ago. He had his son on the staff. I mean, that's just builds whole. And everybody's got one. but Belichick was apparently shocked when Tom Brady called him. So there you go.
Starting point is 00:14:05 I think it's 20-20. Athletes more than ever want to be appreciated as humans, not just football players. I have so many topics today. It's just a great day for us to be on the radio and TV. So I've been on this thing now for a while. I don't like the way the Rams are constructive. too many stars, too many big contracts too early.
Starting point is 00:14:32 And I think the Dallas Cowboys are following suit. It's not the way to build championship teams. I mean, we're a year and a half out of the Rams being in the Super Bowl. They're trying to get rid of Gurley according to a story this morning, Brandon Cooks this morning, and rebuild their offensive line. So I've seen something in the last couple days with the Cowboys, and it feels a lot like the Rams. And according to two stories this morning,
Starting point is 00:14:55 the Rams are reeling inside their room. I'm going to talk about that coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Starting point is 00:17:13 This linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Look. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, my mama want you to weigh better. What?
Starting point is 00:17:28 Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen. before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall.
Starting point is 00:18:15 And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, heck, hell. get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Untucket shirts. Make you feel comfortable. Untucked. Promocodes heard.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Untucket.com code heard. 20% off your first purchase. They have 80 retail locations across America. So I live in Los Angeles, which has been raining for about two weeks. We have a break now in the weather, which is good news. We can go outside, walk, and jog a little. That's all good. It is. The air is clean. I can see the Hollywood sign.
Starting point is 00:19:10 That's the good news. I have not liked, and I've said this, though I live in Los Angeles, I've not been a fan the way the Rams are constructed. I think it's a vanity franchise. Some of it is business. I completely understand. It's a very, very distracted market. And it's a market with a lot of options.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Right now in Los Angeles, you have the best baseball player, Mike Trout and Orange County, the second best player in baseball mooky bets for the Dodgers. You have the best player in the NBA, LeBron. Many people think Kauai Leonard's 2 and Anthony Davis is three or four or five. It is a loaded sports market. You've got two soccer teams. You've got a baseball team, Dodgers that draws over 4 million, two NFL teams, the two probably best NBA teams.
Starting point is 00:19:51 You've got the beach. You've got great weather. You've got hiking. It's a distracted market. And so the Rams come from St. Louis. The Rams were never really L.A.'s team. They were Orange County's team. L.A. was more USC football and Raiders country.
Starting point is 00:20:06 So you get the Rams and they want to make a splash. Lakers, Dodgers, let's make a splash. And they get Todd Gurley's on billboards. And they get Brandon Cooks. And they go out and get some stars. And I didn't like the way they were constructed. So I'm not saying this just matter of fact. It was fun, but it was six or seven big contracts.
Starting point is 00:20:26 pan guys early, looking for stars at positions that kills your depth, and eventually, eventually, you got to get rid of really good players. And if you get one of your stars gets hurt, i.e. Todd Gurley, you can melt as a franchise. So this morning, the report, the Rams are looking to make Brandon Cooks available in the draft. Didn't like it when they got him? I think he's considered retirement early because of some concussion issues. He's kind of a one-trick pony, good player, not worth the money. They're paying him.
Starting point is 00:21:00 And I like him. But if he's your best receiver, he's probably the number three on most teams, a good kid, good player, never liked the move. Todd Gurley, they paid him early. Story this morning, the Rams are going to move on without their running back Todd Gurley. I've got some intel on this. Gurley got hurt and has changed. He's not a great locker room guy.
Starting point is 00:21:21 He's not as committed. last year it was incredible. We kept saying this over and over. It's very heavy in the locker room in Los Angeles. They're being very quiet, covert about Gurley. They won't talk about it. Sean McVeigh is, you know, projecting, oh, it's on me. It's my fault.
Starting point is 00:21:37 That's not what was being said behind closed doors. What was being said is, how do we get out of this contract? So there's reports this morning he's on the trade block. Nobody's going to trade for Todd Gurley unless the Rams pay 75% of the contract. He's no longer a franchise running back. He's just a talented football player. But this is what the Cowboys are doing. So they're paying Amari Cooper and Zeke and everybody in the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:22:00 And DeMarcus Lawrence and Jalen Smith, like the Rams, they're paying six or seven rock stars. They're paying them early. And if Demarcus Lawrence gets hurt next year, just like Gurley for the Rams, the Cowboy defense will be awful. It was already at the end of last year bad. Now they've lost their best corner. Byron Jones, a team came and paid for it. for him. Now they lost their safety, Jeff Heath. They also lost Malik Collins, a defensive lineman, and Randall Cobb, their second best receiver. Jason Whitten is gone. Robert Quinn for the
Starting point is 00:22:35 Cowboys, led them in sacks. He's gone. They like the Rams and Gurley's injury. The Cowboys are a DeMarcus-Lorence injury away from being pathetic defensively and needing DAC to drop 32 a weekend. I don't like the way these teams are built. Now, I don't have a problem paying for a handful of stars. I just saw today the Philadelphia Eagles made a move, which I like. I understand, you got to pay your quarterback. I do not think you have to pay a running back top dollar. The Eagles don't.
Starting point is 00:23:07 I do not believe you have to pay wide receivers top dollar. The Eagles don't. I do think for an elite quarterback, an elite left tackle, an elite defensive linemen, I'm all in. And if you can get a great corner, and there's not many of them, I'd spend money there. Even Patriots, even Bell check will pay for a corner. But I watched the Cowboys, and I watch the Rams, and I'm seeing the Rams, Rams have now lost because they can't afford anybody. They lost Michael Brockers, very good defensive lineman. Dante Fowler, who was kind of situational, but did add a pass rush. Corey Littleton, linebacker, now Brandon Cooks.
Starting point is 00:23:49 The Rams and the Cowboys, Stan Cronky and Jerry Jones are best friends. Maybe this is a business model that ups the, you know, the net worth of the franchise. But we're a year out of that Super Bowl, a year away from the Rams Super Bowl. They're not the same franchise. They got a running back issue. They got a defensive line issue they have to address. They just lost a very good linebacker. I don't like it.
Starting point is 00:24:12 I don't think this pays six or seven rock stars. It crushes your depth. It crushes it. and you have to lose really good football players. You better, and by the way, the Rams have also given up a lot of top draft picks to make some of these deals happen. So good luck getting the next star in the third round, because you're not going to get them in the first.
Starting point is 00:24:32 You don't have to pick. Veteran newsman John Goulet. This is the herd line news. Colin, speaking of that move, you like that the Eagles made. The Eagles have traded for Lions cornerback, Darius Slay. Very good player. Yep, very good player. lions liked him, they just didn't want to pay him. The lions
Starting point is 00:24:53 get a third and fifth round pickback. Eagles have already given him a three-year $50 million extension with $30 million guaranteed. So Byron Jones is no longer the league's highest paid corner. It lasted two days. Now Darius Slay is the highest paid corner. But it should be noted. Philadelphia now has a rock star quarterback.
Starting point is 00:25:09 They have two defensive linemen I love. They have a very good left tackle if he can stay healthy. And now they have a superstar corner. So the Eagles have the key positions locked down, and they've also shown an ability to draft pretty well. Sure. And they also, remember, they lost Malcolm Jenkins to the Saints, so they needed some secondary help.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Yes. And they figured, let's go pay a corner instead of a safe. Yeah, by the way, I agreed with their move on Malcolm Jenkins. I think he's a great guy. I like him. I'm a big fan of Malcolm Jenkins. But for the current construct, Slay is where you should put your money, not Jenkins on the back end. So while we're on the topic of cornerbacks, longtime Broncos Corner, Chris Harris, Jr.,
Starting point is 00:25:49 has agreed to join the Los Angeles Chargers. Did they're secondary now? Okay, so I got a good stat for that. So he's now joins the secondary of, sorry, just corners of him, Casey Hayward, Desmond King. They have three legit corners now. Plus, Derwin James at Safety is one of the best in the league. So PFF, obviously they do all kinds of weird grades. Their highest coverage grade among cornerbacks since 2016.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Number one is Casey Hayward on the Chargers. Number two, Stefan Gilmore. Number three, Desmond King, he's on the Chargers. And number four is Chris Harris. He's on the charges. Okay, so just remember now. The Chargers have three corners. I'm just going to throw this out.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Nobody has three corners, by the way. Nobody. The Chargers have three. The Chargers now may be looking at the draft board and saying, who needs a corner? Detroit just lost Slay. Detroit's got the number three pick. Would you like to have one of our corners in a couple of draft picks if we, the Chargers, can move up to the number three spot?
Starting point is 00:26:49 get the quarterback we want. I'm just, I'm not saying I have any information. No, I don't. But when you have three corners, you don't need three great, they also have two great pass rushers. Right. And maybe the best young safety in the game in Derwin James. So the chargers now are in a great spot.
Starting point is 00:27:05 They've got a corner to give, and that's a position of need for virtually 27 NFL teams. It's a good point. And also, if you're, whatever rookie quarterback they're going after, whether it's Tua or Herbert or Jordan Love, is that not the best landing spot possible? They've fixed their, they've made multiple moves to improve their offensive line.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Guard and their tackle. They have a good running back and now they have a stellar defense personnel-wise. That is an amazing landing. Like that team could win games with even Tyrod Taylor. I'll tell you right now. The Chargers roster. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Today, this morning, they get a quarterback. They are, they don't have a hole. I mean, they could probably use one more interior defense. offensive lineman, that's about it. Sure, but in terms of you're going to have a quarterback come in and be asked to do very little to win
Starting point is 00:27:56 games with that roster. And finally, you talked a lot on the show about the market not being so great for Tom Brady as he hit free agency. I think you might have been right again. Peter King was on W.E.I. in Boston this morning and talked about the lack of market for
Starting point is 00:28:12 Tom Brady and his agent Don Yee. I think that Don Ye being the good agent that he is, tried to get other teams interested and couldn't. You would think that if Tom Brady is on the market, people are all going to be lined up making their pitches. Don Yee has not told this story yet, and I don't know if he will, but I'm a little surprised it came down to two teams. By the way, there were three teams. New England did want him. The Chargers I can confirm wanted him, and Tampa Bay wanted him. So there were three teams for Tom.
Starting point is 00:28:44 That's three more than want Cam Newton. So by the way, now I want to put this in context, and I like Peter King. I love Peter. To have three teams all, all, one with the best coach in football, two with great weapons to want you at 42, 43 years old is a market. That's a real market. I don't need nine broadcasting companies to want me. If I could get one other one, that's called, in our world, it's called leverage. Tom had leverage.
Starting point is 00:29:10 He had New England, Chargers, Tampa. That's three real rosters. surprise, though, that it seemed like the Titans would want to just keep Tanna Hill and not explore it. The Colts were fine with Rivers. I think they thought a couple more teams would have been, at least in on the process more than they were. Okay. New England would have taken, no, Indianapolis, Don Yee told them real early, no thanks. So they didn't pursue it.
Starting point is 00:29:33 You don't think they'd take Brady over Philip Rivers? The Colts would have been the fourth team, but that's the one Tom probably wasn't willing to go to. Veteran Newsman, John Goulet. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. Peter Schrager, Fox Sports, Ace NFL reporter at P. Shregs.com. No, it's just at P. Shreggs on his Twitter account.
Starting point is 00:29:58 Brought to you by Mercedes Ben, the best or nothing. Good morning football show NFL network as well. Shregs, how are you? We're hanging in there. It's a crazy time. And Colin, I cannot thank you enough for offering A, a distraction and doing the job you do. Everyone needs this right now. I appreciate you, brother.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Okay, so Philadelphia, I like Philadelphia. I think Howie Roseman's one of the really sharp dudes. So Malcolm Jenkins on the back end will let you go. Thanks for your service. Slay now at Corner. I got to tell you, I look at that Philadelphia roster. I did it last year. I got sucked in.
Starting point is 00:30:32 This team, if they can stay healthy, because you know they're going to address the receiver in the draft, I like what Philadelphia has done. So far, your thoughts on it. I love what Philadelphia has done. And this is why you got to love what Howie Roesman's all about. I could tell you they were very, very in on Byron Jones. Byron Jones opts to go to the dolphins where there's no state income tax, and he can go to, you know, Brian Flores and hope for work on it.
Starting point is 00:30:55 And that really was a setback for the Eagles. They were all in on Byron Jones hoping as if he was their number one target. Wow. They don't get Byron Jones. They bounce right off the mat. And they might be got a better player in Daria's Slay. And that's what makes the Eagles so fascinating. There's always contingency plan.
Starting point is 00:31:08 So they get Hargrave, the big defensive tackle, who are going to pair with Fletcher Cox up front. Suddenly their defense, and that Jim Schwartz wide nine, you now have Hargrave and Fletcher Cox, two of the best defensive tackles in the sport up front, and now you have Darius Slay in the defensive backfield, and you look at yourself, say, okay, this isn't bad. We did pretty good.
Starting point is 00:31:25 We didn't get Byron Jones, but you know what? We're going to be just fine, and that's how the Eagles roll. They're never going to be one of these four and 12, five, and 11 teams. They always have a contingency plan, and they always get off the map. So I just said this before you came on. The Rams and the Cowboys are doing business with six or seven rock star contracts, kills depth. And I look at Dallas this morning.
Starting point is 00:31:46 So they lose Robert Quinn, their sack leader. They lose their only elite corner. They lose Jeff Heath. They lose Randall Cobb. They lose a veteran culture guy, Jason Whitten. And, you know, I see all these big contracts, but I look at that cowboy defense, much like the Rams offense. They were one injury, Todd Gurley away from kind of being a mess.
Starting point is 00:32:07 I look at that cowboy defense this morning, Shregs. If DeMarcus Louris had a setback for a couple of months, this defense is not good. It's not good. I don't like what I see in Dallas. I don't know. I look at Dallas and the Rams and I see, I don't see the depth. And I don't think they've had very good offseason so far. You know what's going to be a real, real interesting piece to whenever football does come back?
Starting point is 00:32:33 All these new coaches coming into these teams who will have no contact with their players. So in comes Mike McCarthy and Mike Nolan, the defensive coordinator, but they're going to have very little contact with these defensive players. So if you're already behind the eight ball in saying that we lost a lot of talent, now you look at your roster and it's like, okay, we're going to have to fill some patches in there, but you can't even learn the defense in a face-to-face setting and get into the building. How are you expected to just be up and going? So I look at the consistency, I guess, amongst staff,
Starting point is 00:33:03 and if I'm already projecting into next season, who's bringing back a lot of talent? Who's bringing back their same defensive? Who's bringing back the same defensive coordinator? For the Cowboys, the new defensive coordinator, a new head coach, and a lot of new guys on the field. Of course you have a skepticism about it. And I look at that defense. They pay Jalen Smith big money, and they played the Marcus Lawrence big money. We'll see how this thing goes, but you are spot on.
Starting point is 00:33:24 You lost a lot of key pieces. Byron Jones was never even an option because you had to deal with Dak, Amari, and Ezekiel Elliott. And now you're looking at a completely new roster and a completely new defensive front and a completely new defensive scheme. oh, not to mention a new head coach, and they're not all going to be talking in the same room for months. Brady and the Bucks deal, it's not official yet. Anything holding it back?
Starting point is 00:33:44 Is it complicated, physical stuff? What is it? It's so complicated. So I heard you talking about Peter King before we came on here. What I think Peter's saying, and I'm with him on this, is Colin, I was on your show a couple weeks ago, and we did a Brady bunch motif because eight teams were banging down the door for Tom Brady. But when the thing came down to it, Brady canceled some out.
Starting point is 00:34:02 I think Indianapolis are spot on. I also think the Raiders, he said I'm good. I think it's also to do that I'm good. But when it came down to it, it was going to be Tampa or the Chargers. I could tell you, as you had early in the day, indications were that L.A. was not an option, which kind of narrowed things down to Tampa. But those Tampa guys weren't doing a parade around Tampa Bay because they hadn't gotten word from Brady yet. How a lot of those Tampa Bay guys were finding this out was that everyone was tweeting about it,
Starting point is 00:34:26 and Brady wasn't outright saying, no, no, no, no, that's not true yet. So the lack of communication is one thing. The second thing is this whole physical deal. So if you haven't been following exactly the business, the logistics and the nooks and crannies to it. Brady has to get a physical before this thing is approved. The Buccaneers have that, and they're right. However, he can't get on a private plane.
Starting point is 00:34:44 He can't come down to Tampa, and it has to come down to an independent doctor around where Brady is. Now, Brady's in New York at the moment. So both the Buccaneers and Brady's representation, which is Don Yee, they have to feel comfortable with any random doctor that's assigned by the NFL to go and do this. And there's a $30 million a year contract riding in this. This is also season tickets, everything. And this might be a doctor who neither the Buccaneers or Tom Brady had ever met before or even know.
Starting point is 00:35:11 It's a very complicated thing. Everyone's taking the great precaution because of COVID-19 that you can't get Brady out there. But this could be very, very interesting. And there's a new CBA with new language. And while this is all going on, all of the Buccaneers folks have families at home who are in isolation, who are dealing with real-world problems. This is one of the most complicated contracts that's going to come through because they can't even have a press conference.
Starting point is 00:35:34 conference to announce that Tom Brady is the new quarterback of the San Bay Buccaneers. They can't even bring them in the facility because of what's going on in the world right now. By the way, I thought the Brady-Niner rumors, I just couldn't get my brain around it. I couldn't figure out why San Francisco would do that, but I was told by a GM in the last 48 hours, it was real. Do you have any insight on the Niners backing out of the Brady sweepstakes? I think there was actual discussion and the fact that you never saw Kyle Sannahan or John Lynch or Parag Marazzi who handles a lot of those contracts come out and outwardly say, hey, Jimmy's our guy.
Starting point is 00:36:12 That led to that thing being more than just smoke and it might have been fire. But in the hours before Free Agency, and I could say even the days before Free Agency, they had moved on from that discussion. They didn't even have it really legitimately inside their building, but they weren't really silencing it. What they had to focus on is what they were going to do with their defense. And I think it was fascinating the kind of the machinations that they pulled to bring back armstead to get a first round pick for buckner and also get back jimmy war just for your listeners if
Starting point is 00:36:39 you're a niners fan armstead and buckner were represented by the same agents and that's joel seagull seagull and chaffey field those two guys split up over the last six months chaffey field took armstead with him josegill another top agent he took buckner with him so the niners had to do this delicate dance where they were dealing with two two agents that used to be partners but no longer are and they had to make sure that they had a trade in place with Buckner before they can negotiate a deal with Armstead so they knew they were at least getting something for one of them and not losing the other one.
Starting point is 00:37:10 In fact, they actually end up getting a first-round pick. They get Buckner, and then they get Jimmy Ward to sign with them despite offers for more money at other places. So major, major deal by the Niners and Tom Brady's an afterthought when they can bring back that defense. Okay, I want to talk briefly about Carolina, Arizona, and the Dolphins. Let's talk about Carolina. I love Teddy Bridgewater.
Starting point is 00:37:30 I really do. and I think this is going to be, this is going to work in Carolina. What's your takeaway on it? Colin, I think it was the best move of the week. And it's nothing against Cam Newton. Cam Newton has an incredible NFL career. This is just a fresh start with a new coach and a new owner. And I'll tell you why.
Starting point is 00:37:47 It gets them out of purgatory. Again, because of what's going on in the real world, outside of the football world, there was going to be no contact with Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on a day-to-day basis. So they were waiting on a prognosis. on his foot. They were waiting to see if his shoulders 100% like it was trending towards the end. And in this case, they go and with no one expecting them to make
Starting point is 00:38:08 a move for a quarterback, they swipe Teddy Bridgewater who had multiple offers, and they bring him in and say, okay, we have our franchise guy and here's the wrinkle to it. Teddy played for Joe Brady, their new offensive coordinator, who's a 30-year-old mastermind who was with LSU last year. He played with Joe Brady when Joe Brady
Starting point is 00:38:24 was with the Saints two years ago. So Teddy has a connection there, so they're already aware of the offense. He gets there. He picks it straight up and they go, and Colin, you've been in this world for as long as you have. I don't think I've ever met someone who has a negative thing to say about Teddy Bridgewater. So he comes in, fresh start. Yeah, they might have lost a lot of talent this all season and it might not be as clean as they want with Cam Newton, but without knowing what Cam Newton's health is going to be and without having day-to-day contact with him because of the current restriction, this one is like, all right, we have a quarterback for next year and that's it. And he's a great guy and we're going to go to war with him.
Starting point is 00:38:58 The next team he said was the Cardinals, right? I thought what they did was fantastic. And I think getting DeAndre Hopkins for David Johnson and a later round pick is a great move. But I'll tell you, I was at the Combine. Now I was having dinner with the general manager of the Cardinal Steve Kime. I was having dinner with Cliff Kingsbury, who's the head coach at the combine. And the table next to us was Bill O'Brien. And I am having now kind of piece it all back together and they all exchanged pleasantries and whatever.
Starting point is 00:39:23 I'm wondering if there was any discussion at that dinner table that I wasn't aware of, if those dinner discussion led to something else, but there certainly were pleasantries exchanged back in February. And I have a feeling that this deal might have been a few weeks in the making, not just an overnight happening. Joe Burrow, a reporter Miami Herald says, Miami is willing to give a crate of picks to Cincinnati. I don't think the Bengals have the guts to move off Burrow.
Starting point is 00:39:49 What do you make of the story? The dolphins have three first-round picks. I know. That is a bounty. If you could tell me that the Miami Dolphs, Dolphins have their number one quarterback, and they come out of this draft, and they feel like Joe Burrow is head and shoulders better than Tua, and they don't want to wait for the injury to heal. I have no problem with that trade, and I know it sounds wild to think three first-round pick, but that's why he stockpiled the pick. The thing with Burrow is this.
Starting point is 00:40:13 There's still questions whether Burrow is dying to be at Cincinnati Bangal or not. If that's the case, if I'm a Dolphins and I like Burrow more than Tua, I knock down every door and I try to get him and say, let's all give us an out here. Let's give us an out here. We'll make a trade. You guys take the five, and we can also, you know, take you take. our other 18 and 23 or whatever else the picks are. But to me, this is a very fascinating swap, and I don't discount that rumor at all.
Starting point is 00:40:35 I think Burrow and the Dolphins would be a good mix if they think Burrow is their number one guy. God, you're great, Shreger. You're great. I've had a wild few days. I relocated my family. Don't cry for me. There's a lot of people worse off,
Starting point is 00:40:47 but kind of tell you how nice it is for you to be on air, talking football and putting pause on everything going on in the world right now. I think that's serious, Colin. It is a huge relief for everyone, and we appreciate you, man. Shregs, you're one of the best guys in our business, and I say that despite all the things you just said. You're just not because of what I just said. You're a good dude, and I've said that many times. In our industry, there's, there are, not everybody is Peter Schrager, and I love you, man.
Starting point is 00:41:13 Thanks. I love you too, Colin. Have a great rest of your show. All right. He's such a good guy. He's so good, and he's such an invaluable source for what I do. You can text him any time of the night, and he'll give you numbers, info. He's just a world-class guy.

Starting point is 00:42:47 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Starting point is 00:43:09 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the hard way.

And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:43:42 This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, ref, my mom, I want you. you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.
Starting point is 00:44:05 Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast's Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he needs. knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective
Starting point is 00:44:33 on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
Starting point is 00:44:49 And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball.
Starting point is 00:45:09 So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The owner rent a home, of course you do. Starting point is 00:45:23 I use them. Very easy. Oh, we got so much going on today. And next hour, I'm going to bring on Dr. Drew Pinsky, by the way, Dr. Drew Pinski, by the way, Dr. Drew for about 10 minutes of context on the virus. We're going to talk mostly NFL today. But I think the show can withstand 10 minutes of a really smart guy, giving you context. A lot of questions about the virus. I had a buddy over last night.
Starting point is 00:45:45 We stayed within, you know, outside of six feet, had a beer, talked about this and our families. We're doing a lot of social distancing with our families right now. And, you know, this is what we're doing. and no friends over, this and that. Had a buddy over. We stayed, you know, six feet apart, had a beer and talked about a lot of different things. So Dr. Drew, top of next hour, Jason Whitlock today, Lance Zerline, former NFL scout, who is great from Houston.
Starting point is 00:46:09 Is it a mess in Houston? I don't think it is. I'm on an island on that one. So Adam Silver talked yesterday on another network, my former employer, about shortening the season and the challenges the NBA has because the coronavirus strikes in the middle of the. their season. Regardless of whether we had been going through all this, it's something that the league office together with our teams has been spending a lot of time on. And we have a lot of our team
Starting point is 00:46:35 owners who are technologists, media mavens by background. And so it's something that committees of owners and league officials have been working on a lot, especially over the past year or so. Okay, I like Adam Silver. He is an adapter. If you're in retail, you got to consider the monster Amazon. If you're in film production, you've got to consider the growing monster Netflix. If you're in the sports business, you run a league. You got to consider the NFL. It's big and getting bigger. A, gambling is now rolling out as legal in America helps the NFL.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Fantasy sports is back and rolling. Daily fantasy, weekly fantasy, game fantasy, big edge to the NFL. The NFL is now also extending their season to 17 games. So you got to consider them. Baseball's had its head in the sand forever. Give me my glove. I love batting practice. 162 games.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Ridiculous. Cut the season down to 120. Create urgency. They'll never do it. But the NBA has always given away the first three months of their season to the NFL. Doesn't make sense. I hope Adam Silver considers slightly shortening the season, starting now Christmas. Regular season until late May.
Starting point is 00:47:50 Playoffs for six weeks. Get out of these seven. game first round series. Make the games matter. You've got to consider the NFL. The NFL is not a big deal in July. Why does your season end before July? Start your season Christmas.
Starting point is 00:48:10 Nobody watches the NBA. I see the numbers. Nobody watches October and November. You start at Christmas Day. By the way, the three highest rated NBA regular season game so far, all three on Christmas. And by a long shot, that's when the consumers say, I'm into the NBA. So why start the league before then?
Starting point is 00:48:30 You start in Christmas. You go through late May. You can do it if you subtract about 10 to 12 games. Then a couple of days off, six weeks, not eight of playoffs. Then August 1st, draft. You know, free agency or, you know, you can do the draft and free agency in a two-week period. You have the draft, do free agency for eight days, do whatever, whichever one. comes first. Then you have Summer League into Labor Day weekend. Seacrest out. Then you hand it off
Starting point is 00:49:00 to the NFL. July and August are wide open real estate. Wide open. Am I going to watch the NBA playoffs or a crappy exhibition game? I'm a football guy. I can't watch the preseason. It's awful. It's unwatchable. Empty stadiums, backups to backups. Adam Silver. I can watch. I can watch. I can watch. I like Summer League. Hell, if I'll watch Summer League NBA in August, why wouldn't I watch LeBron against Kauai? So to me, this is a golden opportunity for the NBA to finally push the season back. The world's changing.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Legalized gambling is here. It's only going to help football. Linear TV is dominated by college football in the NFL because of the once-a-week urgency. Push it back. And the NBA can be a Christmas to August. 10th sport. That's the way to do it. That's the way to do it. And I hope they consider it. They got a very smart commissioner. With True Car shoppers save an average of $3,500 off MSRP. I bought off True Car, saved three grand, buy smarter, drive happier. Our number two is coming up.

I can't, you know, not being able to do this show, you sit home all day and too much time watching TV, it's kind of a downer. So I hope I can help you. You're certainly helping me. And thank you so much.
Starting point is 00:54:56 Schrager was so good in the first hour. I'll put that on the podcast today. So many things going on in the NFL. I do want to talk about this, is that Adam Schaefter came out this morning. Excellent NFL reporter said, since word surfaced that Brady's expected to land in Tampa, an unexpected
Starting point is 00:55:14 high number of players have reached out to the Buccaneers to let them know they want to play with him. It's the LeBron James effect. Here's the thing. And Bill Belichick, When I lived in Connecticut, one of the really cool things about living in Connecticut was all the prep schools. They looked like Hogwarts.
Starting point is 00:55:32 They were all over the place. I grew up in a state, Washington State. We didn't have them. Nevada didn't have them. California didn't have many. One of the things I always loved about Connecticut living there for 10 or 11 years was the tradition, you know, sometimes a little rigid, stodgy and a little too heavy into tradition. The prep schools were unbelievable. You drive on campus.
Starting point is 00:55:54 They got nothing like it where I grew up. like two miles from my house. You go over a hill and see this amazing, you know, Avon Old Farms is one of the classic ones. And the New England system always reminds me of the classic prep school. Everybody wears the same uniform.
Starting point is 00:56:10 No independent thinking. Behave, intense studying. One way to see the world. You know, it's cool. It's heavy into tradition. Tampa is not like that. Tampa is expressive with Bruce Ariens and loose.
Starting point is 00:56:28 It is a big fun public school. It's fun. It's loose. It's expressive. And that's who Bruce Ariens is. No risket, no biscuit. That's his term. So, you know, this is one of these things where I think Brady is going to go to Tampa
Starting point is 00:56:42 Bay and tighten them up a little bit. And I also think Bruce Ariens is going to loosen Tom up. I think Tom's funny. I think Tom's verbal. We've seen him do a lot of funny, interesting things on Instagram. He can be manipulative in game playing. He's fun. He likes it.
Starting point is 00:56:59 He likes the new platforms. I think he's going to laugh more. I do think Tom Brady's arm is still very good. These reports I hear about Brady can't throw down field. The hell games are you people watching? Tom Brady's still got a top 10 arm in the NFL. You know, it's not Stafford maybe. You know, I'm not saying it's Stafford.
Starting point is 00:57:21 But it's Russell Wilson, isn't it? It's not Mahomes. It's not Carson Wentz. It's not Matt Stafford. It's in the same class as Russell Wilson. We don't talk about his arm. So I think this whole thing, I think Brady was at a prep school. Now he's going to do a really fun public.
Starting point is 00:57:41 And I think he's going to make the public school a little tighter, but it's also going to make him a little more expressive, laugh more, little looser, a lot of fun. I think everybody wins here. I think everybody wins. I think New England's going to rebuild. I don't think they're going to go after, you know, they didn't want Bridgewater, according to reports,
Starting point is 00:58:00 didn't want Philip Rivers. I think they're going with Jared Stidham, going to rebuild a little bit. They've got so much equity because they've won so many games, like the Golden State Warriors, they can do it. But I'm excited for Tom. I think Tom is much more expressive, and I also think Belichick was lucky.
Starting point is 00:58:16 Belichick, in fact, let me look this up real quick, before I get to our next guest. I'm going to look this up. I saw Belichick. press release the day after Tom left, did you notice the first thing Belichick talked about? It wasn't about winning. It wasn't about winning.
Starting point is 00:58:31 His first quote, Tom was our, Tom lived and perpetuated our culture on a daily basis. Belichick's not going to get that with the next guy. Aaron Rogers has an opinion. Peyton Manning had an opinion. Dan Marino had an opinion. Brady is the only other guy I can think of like this
Starting point is 00:58:49 is Tim Duncan with a spurs. A superstar, willing to do. to completely buy in and be totally committed to the culture's way of life and the coach's culture. Brady and Tim Duncan are like, okay, you lead me. I'll listen. Most of these star basketball players, LeBron, you're going to do it kind of LeBron's way. You know, Kobe, I'll listen to you, Phil, but we're going to do it my way.
Starting point is 00:59:14 You know, Peyton Manning had opinions. Aaron Rogers, Brett Favre, and I love all of them. But, you know, the first thing Belichick mentioned was not winning in a number. his press release. It was Tom was not a player. He bought into our program. He bought into my program. Belichick's going to miss that. That is not every superstar. And superstars now make more money than ever, are more, not entitled, more empowered than ever. I think it's very interesting. A break, a 10-minute break from football in the NBA. I met Dr. Drew Pinsky about five years ago at a social gathering. Couldn't meet him today because of social distancing. And I met him and his wife and friends
Starting point is 00:59:56 and immediately struck by his common sense, his intelligence, his empathy, his curiosity. The Dr. Drew podcast daily. He's on YouTube. Ask Dr. Drew. Dr. Drew after dark, multiple New York Times bestsellers. And I thought for 10 minutes as I'm watching television with my friends and I'll talk to my friends and text him and I say, is the media, you know, is the media, is slightly panicking here. Can we really use Italy as our barometer? And I want to bring in Drew Pinsky right now. Can I start? Let me start with this. First of all, Drew, thank you for coming on the show. My pleasure. Thank you for giving me a 10-minute break from all this by listening to a little Tom Brady talk. That was very appealing. Thank you. So let me just
Starting point is 01:00:37 take Italy is now being used as a barometer for the United States. But Italy has 60 million people. Yeah. It's a country the size of Michigan. Right. It is the oldest European country. I think 24, 23% of their citizens are above 50 or above 60. I saw yesterday that 99% of Italian deaths, people over 79 with medical conditions. I see our media saying, look at Italy, that's us. And I say, well, it's kind of a different sensibility. Or am I wrong on that, that we should look at Italy and that's what's going to happen? No, you are right, which is the sense that we are not going to be Italy.
Starting point is 01:01:16 I've had several teleconferences with Italian physicians, and they freely admit, They were unprepared. They did not see it coming. And they do not have the adequate resources. We are prepared. The reason we won't become Italy is we have stamped this thing down, and we have massively prepared our system. No one does better than the American health care system when it comes to preparing resources,
Starting point is 01:01:40 delivering resources, and innovation. We are simply the best in the world. And whenever you see these evaluations of U.S. health care, that sort of thing is never measured. and you watch. Even in places where the system gets stressed, we will respond. I have deep faith in my peers and the health care system. And I would urge everyone, just listen to Anthony Fauci. Let him be your North Star.
Starting point is 01:02:02 I've been in around him since the AIDS epidemic. The guy knows exactly what he's doing. Just do what he tells you, and we will be fine. That's it. That's all we have to worry about. Everything else you see in the press is them trying to capture your eyes, and they're not helping things. They're making things much worse,
Starting point is 01:02:17 to the point now where the panes, is worse than the outbreak. There is one thing I was told about two weeks ago, long story short, I was skiing in a nice place. And I met a couple of CEOs. Hope it wasn't the Italian out. No, it was not. It was Deer Valley, Utah, which if you've never been, is wonderful. And it just happened to be, I met a CEO from New York and Seattle.
Starting point is 01:02:36 They were in the locker room area. And they both said their primary concern was the shortages of beds in America. Now, and I think that's the one thing that I've worried about is that. Listen, I was in a hospital two weeks ago because I had stomach virus. And listen, it's a stressed system at times. Is that a real concern for you going forward? Because it is a real concern, they are planning for that. I can only speak to what's going on in California.
Starting point is 01:03:06 Our governor identified two massive hospitals that he plans to staff up, has got a backlog of ventilators and equipment coming in, and has positioned a U.S. Navy ship off the course, up the shore here for any overflow. We are completely prepared. I was not always a Newsom fan, which is our governor's name here, California. But yesterday I was deeply impressed with his preparedness. He is not leaving this open to chance. We are ready.
Starting point is 01:03:37 And I would argue that pretty much every state, and by the way, not if you saw the press conference a few minutes ago, but everything's coming from three states and something like 10 counties. These are the areas that need the preparation and they are preparing. I did not see the press conference because I was entertaining America. I appreciate that, too, by the way. We need that. We need this. We need to get our minds off of this and certainly take our eyes off the press who are trying to attract us with language to a couple things.
Starting point is 01:04:04 I saw the word soaring just a minute ago. That cases are soaring, though we expect at least a doubling. of cases just from the backlog of testing coming in. We expect that. We're going to see that. That doesn't mean the transmission rate is changing. Stop it with those headlines. Also, we had politicians talking about sheltering in place. I made a big issue with that on a local television program because shelter in place is a command to barricade yourself in a room. And God bless Mayor of Los Angeles, Garcetti, he adjusted his language because I got on that pretty hard. You are not helping people by announcing that they need to barricade themselves in a room.
Starting point is 01:04:46 That's not the CDC recommendations. Just look at the CDC recommendations and follow them carefully. You know, are there, and again, this, I'm going to sound naive, so, you know, mitigate this for me. Any current vaccines that you do. There's actually phase one, soon to be phase two trial coming underway. And yes, there are three very fine vaccines in a record time, not only vaccines, but therapies are coming online as well. There are some excellent treatments. I mean, those treatments within a week, we will know how well they are working, and it's looking very good.
Starting point is 01:05:20 And some of them are harmless. Things like hydroxychloroquine. I have a case right now that I'm watching pretty carefully. If she has a recurrence, I'm putting her on the placidone, because it really dramatically decreases the amount of viral production. So the way vaccines work, could you have a vaccine, say, for malaria, and it just so happens, it can help the coronavirus. Do vaccines ever work that way?
Starting point is 01:05:43 You're asking a very broad question, and not as it pertains to malaria, that's for sure, but sometimes things like a flu vaccine will help with other immune responses. But this one is going to be very targeted. We have to get this one right without causing adverse effect. The other thing, this, you know, I told a friend the other day, I said, Listen, a loss of life is, it's daunting, right? Yeah. For any family.
Starting point is 01:06:09 Yes. But this, although anybody can contract this, Dr. Drew, it does appear to be affecting in terms of fatalities older people. I saw a story yesterday in Italy where 99, 79 years old was the average where people, 99% of the people passing were 79 or older. So is this rare where a virus, it can be contracted by anybody, but in terms of who it's affecting the deceased, it appears to be a specific 75-plus compromised physical health group. Yes, it does.
Starting point is 01:06:42 That's not saying that that's the only group that needs hospitalization. Right, right. It's a group that dies. Number one, well, let's compare it to other viruses. It's always problematic to compare epidemics, but let's just talk about other epidemics. Our last pandemic was in 2009. It was the H1N1 swine flu. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:59 Infected one billion people, killed half a million, primarily, 40 to 6-year-olds. So that one was different in that way. We usually expect influenza to disproportionately affect old people. We have so far in this country 18,000 deaths from influenza, 115 from Corona. So we're doing pretty good. Yeah. Is there, so you've been very comforting so far. Try it is what will be something. What are the legs? When you look, what will be the information you get in a week or two and you go, okay, we're not clear, but we've reached a point, I feel very good. Yes, 20,000 cases on Monday. And if we don't go much above that by Friday, we are going to have a series of points on the epidemiology graph where things are going to start
Starting point is 01:07:53 to look pretty good. If we are up around 100,000 by next Friday, we have to be very diligent and really keep things clamp down. So at 20 by Monday, even around 20, I will feel, even around 20, I will feel very, very good. Now, I have to tell you, this is my own assessment of the math. I'm still waiting for Dr. Fauci to speak about this. He has been somewhat closed mouth, closed-lipped about targets and where to feel good and when we can go back to work and that kind of thing. My position has always been that the tougher put in all of this is getting us back to work
Starting point is 01:08:24 in a timely manner without causing another outbreak. That's going to be a tough call. Yeah. You know, again, and I sound obviously like a non-medical professional. My concern at this point. But I thought you were one. What's going on here? It's not confused.
Starting point is 01:08:40 No, I just know football. I worry now as much about the economic situation, the loss of millions of jobs, as much as the virus. So, again, I don't want to sound that I'm lacking empathy, but the economic situation frightens me. So every time a medical personnel makes an intervention, we are charged with the credo of do no harm. So we always do a risk-benefit analysis. Once we do an intervention, what are the potential adverse effects we have caused? And we weigh these things. It's not just we go, clamp this thing down, control the virus,
Starting point is 01:09:17 without also considering all the potential effects on other aspects of our lives, other aspects of our health care, other aspects of our well-being. And a lot of that has been sacrificed right now, and that needs to be considered very highly. I think some areas have gone too far and are adversely affected. I've been critical of the language people are using. And I've been critical of some of the excesses that local measures are taking, and I keep advocating just to follow Dr. Fauci, just follow him. He knows what he's doing.
Starting point is 01:09:47 You don't necessarily have to go beyond that. However, to the extent that we have, it's incumbent on all of us to be good citizens and do whatever the local measures are we're bringing us to do. Yeah, I'm a little discouraged by the hoarding of food at grocery stores. Oh, listen, in Los Angeles now, people have started stealing from people as they come out of the grocery store. Wow. Yeah, it's not good. The Dr. Drew podcast Daily with Adam Carolla.
Starting point is 01:10:10 Ask Dr. Drew, Dr. Drew After Dark, YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, author of New York Times bestsellers. Such a pleasure. You're so busy and taxed on the requests. It's good to talk to you. I just want people to know. we're looking out for their well-being. Don't get into the spin on social media. Take your eyes off the television a bit.
Starting point is 01:10:32 Don't listen to the crazy rhetoric that is designed to capture your eyes and scare you. We're going to do fine if we follow Dr. Fauci's recommendations. Things are looking good right now. It's a challenge. It's a serious situation. But we don't want to do too much harm to our lives where we have problems coming back. That's the navigation, getting that threading that, properly. You know, we, we are good at challenges in America, Dr. Drew, and I told friends this.
Starting point is 01:11:00 I said this, post-9-11, our aviation standards went up in terms of security, and I think post-corona, we will be more prepared for the next virus, which, by the way, it could be a virus that attacks our children. Yes, it could be way worse. And we will, the good news about a crisis like this is we will evolve. We are evolving. We are, increasing telemedicine, where kids are learning how to get taught from home. We are re-entrenching with our families. We are starting to look at our priorities and values. It's not going to be a pure negative. We will come out of this, evolved in ways that will benefit us. And certainly next flu season, we will take it more seriously and wash our hands and social distance, which we've been
Starting point is 01:11:45 trying to get people and get your flu shot, which we've been trying to get people to do forever. Yeah, new normals, actually. Drew, thank you so much. Thank you. You bet. A little break from sports there. I just thought I just wanted to talk to somebody that could give information. I watched a network last night, no reason to take a shot at a network, that the language was so bad. It was overwhelming.
Starting point is 01:12:05 It stressed me out. And so I went online and there's a lot of answers online. There's not trigger words or the kind of eyeball-seeking language that I think, unfortunately, I'm hearing on all networks. All right. Coming up next, Cam Newton, there's no market. There's a story out on James Winston. There's apparently a market for James.
Starting point is 01:12:31 30 picks and five fumbled James. That next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Starting point is 01:13:51 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.

And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 01:14:55 Time out. Quarterback on office, blue of 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam?
Starting point is 01:15:16 This Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. our podcast point game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves,
Starting point is 01:15:35 I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too.
Starting point is 01:15:58 Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court licking his fingers while he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you. you get your podcasts. Welcome back. It is good to have you. Want to hear something amazing. Discover matches all the cashback you earn on your credit card end of your first year. Discover's accepted at over
Starting point is 01:16:28 95% of the places in the U.S. that take credit cards, discover.com slash yes. Peter Schreger and Dr. Drew Pinsky, uh, we're just absolutely fantastic on our show today. Nobody is saying younger people can't contract the virus. Nobody is saying that's untrue. But in terms of of deaths, it is older people. 99% of the deaths in Italy are people 79 years and older with health complications going in. Those are just facts.
Starting point is 01:17:02 Veteran newsman, John Goulet. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. So the NBA has been at the forefront of the sports world dealing with the coronavirus. they were obviously the first league to suspend games and have been very upfront that it'll be a while before they come back. Yesterday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke with ESPN about the potential of getting some sort of game together simply to give fans a distraction.
Starting point is 01:17:32 And one of the things we've been talking about are there conditions in which a group of players could compete? And maybe it's for a giant fundraiser or just for the collective good of the people. Yeah. You take a subset of players. and is there a protocol in which they can be tested and quarantined or isolated in some way? And then they can compete against each other just because, again, people are stuck at home, and I think they need a diversion, they need to be entertained. And I just add to that point, one of the thoughts I've heard from several of our teams
Starting point is 01:18:06 and something I've been thinking about a lot is, you know, to the extent we were the first to shut our league down, and what way can we be a first mover to help restart the end? economy. Let me say it. This is very smart. If you could test every NBA player and you knew who had it and who did not, you tested every team. And there's been some pushback. Why does the NBA get tested? They're using private companies. They're not using stuff from the government. They're using private companies. If you could do that and assure players would not contract the virus, I love the idea of playing games in a month, just players and staff. Then I think that's a very good idea, as long.
Starting point is 01:18:46 as you can take the tests and you know going in that none of your players or staff or trainers have it because y'all share a ball so i i think there's a psychological benefit to that as well i like that idea i think that's a good idea i also do like the idea of if sooner if you go you know what let's we're going to do a charity five on five just get a couple teams put it on t-n-t give them give the all the ad money for it like something you could do because then you wouldn't have to test all the teams you could just test hey 10 players two coaches and two reps they're all clean We're going to let them play. I think it'd be just we could bet on that.
Starting point is 01:19:19 It would be something we could all kind of get behind and just distract us a little bit. You know, if you get some big name players, I think it'd be fun. Former Eagle Safety Malcolm Jenkins has a four-year $32 million deal to rejoin the New Orleans Saints. The Eagles declined to pick up his option earlier this week. Jenkins was originally drafted by the Saints
Starting point is 01:19:37 and spent his first five years there. The Saints are going all in at one more Super Bowl run with Drew Brees, right? That's what they're doing. Yep. But now Tom Brady is in the division. If you had to put what's left of your 401k on which team wins that division, the NFC South, do you like the Bucks? With Brady, you're like the Saints with Drew Brees. Well, it's arguably now the best quarterback division in football between Breeze.
Starting point is 01:19:59 Eddie Bridgewater is the worst quarterback in that division. Now, the NFC West has Russell Wilson, Jared Gough, Garoppel and Kyler Murray, and I think Murray's going to be a star. That's not bad either. My guess is Tampa Bay is a wildcard team. I think the Saints have the better roster. After that, I think the rosters are fairly even, and I'll take Brady and those weapons and Bruce Ariens. So I think Tampa's going to be a, listen, Tampa last year,
Starting point is 01:20:23 just think about this. Jamis Winston himself had 35 turnovers. They went 7 and 9? Yep. Okay, Tom Brady will probably have 12 turnovers. So a third of that. You mentioned they had 6-1 possession loss. Yes.
Starting point is 01:20:38 I mean, Tampa's very capable of being a 10 and 6 football team. Does that win the division? But if you ask me today, they're a record with Brady, I'd say 10 and 6. And can we stop this reporting that Brady's arm is shot? No, it's not. Now, Tom, as the season progresses, I think knows he needs warmer weather. I think one of the reasons he liked the Chargers in Tampa is the warmer weather. I think it's easier to loosen up as you age.
Starting point is 01:21:04 But this idea that Tom can't throw the ball down the field, I watched every Brady snap now for 15 years. I lived in Connecticut. it. His arm is fine. It's a top 10, 12 arm in the NFL today. What receiver was he going to throw to down the field? Nobody got open. That's the only way they could operate that offense with short passes. Speaking of Brady, him and the Bucks have a deal in place, I guess, even though he hasn't announced anything and the Bucks haven't announced anything.
Starting point is 01:21:32 Now, technically, a lot of these deals are pending because teams can't give physicals because they've shut down all the facilities. According to Jeff Darlington and Peter Schrager told us this last hour. The Bucks and Brady have like a mutually agreed upon doctor in New York to give him a physical. Cool. Right. I think it's a little odd that they haven't. I don't.
Starting point is 01:21:52 I don't. You know, this is one of these things. It's the new normal for the next several months and maybe forever. Okay. This is a lot of stuff's not going to get. I mean, I'm still waiting for the Charles Barkley news. You know, I mean, seriously.
Starting point is 01:22:06 So like stuff, everything, everything has been changed. You may hear about this on social media. Now stuff gets broken on Twitter as much as it gets broken on a sports network. I just think the world's changing. And when Tom does it, he'll tell us he's in no hurry. I don't think Tampa has anything to worry about. Let me be annoying for one second.
Starting point is 01:22:24 His coach is Bill Belichick. Only coach has ever had. He agreed to be the Jets head coach and one day later changed his mind, went to the Patriots. His offensive coordinator is Josh McDaniels. He agreed to be the Colts head coach. And a couple days later, changed his mind and went back to the Patriots. Brady's not going to the Patriots.
Starting point is 01:22:39 You're not, you don't think there's any remorse of he sat with this for 24 hours. No. You know what? I screwed up. I don't want to do this. No. None? No.
Starting point is 01:22:47 Belichick lacks warmth. Brady seeks some warmth physically and psychologically. And Tampa's a good fit. And Bruce Ariens a good fit. Veteran news man, John Goulai. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news.
Starting point is 01:23:02 Oh, I saw this story. Yes. It is nice to be right. I mean, Occasionally I'm wrong. These are rare instances that are almost hard to track. Anywho, Cam Newton, according to a story, may have to accept backup role to remain in the NFL. Story today, the Redskins are interested in James Winston.
Starting point is 01:23:25 Not Cam. Bears, not Cam. Raiders, not Cam. Colts, not Cam. Chargers, not Cam. Where Cullen was right. It's Carmelo Anthony. I've often compared Cam Newton to Westbrook, but it's becoming Carmelo Anthony.
Starting point is 01:23:46 No self-awareness. Refused to adapt to the new three-point league semi-committed. Mello was never in great shape. Writing off that great reputation in college and is aged poorly. Welcome to Carmelo Anthony. Welcome to Cam Newton. I mean, that was always the knock on Carmelo. I remember talking to George Carl once, and he's like, he's never in great shape.
Starting point is 01:24:08 He never was. He was kind of committed. If you're not in great shape as a pro athlete, you're not totally committed. Mellow always kind of lacks self-awareness. Cam lacks it. Cam's distracted, kind of committed. You know, he's tough. He plays through pain.
Starting point is 01:24:22 I give him credit for that, and he had one great season. But I never, I always said, what's the market for Cam? What's the market? Inaccurate, 59% completion percentage. Take away one great year, and his passer rating is like 85. I mean, there's been a lot of receivers in the NFL that have had one great year. We don't call them great receivers that have been running backs who have had a great season. We don't call him great running backs.
Starting point is 01:24:50 Cam Newton's 500 since his MVP year. He's an average quarterback who had a great year. Well, he runs around. Not even great at that anymore. He's certainly not Lamar. He's not Russell Wilson. He's not Kyler Murray. And a lot of guys running around.
Starting point is 01:25:05 I don't think he's today. He runs around like Carson. Wentz. It's good. It's not the best. And Cam's cheap, too. If Cam can't get a job now, I mean, Brady's expensive. New England wanted him. Tambo wanted him. The Chargers wanted him. And I believe the Colts wanted him. And Tom was expensive and old.
Starting point is 01:25:25 Cam is young and cheap. No takers. You know, remember when Nolan Norwicky was the scout, the draft guy? And he came out, he's got a draft book. And he said, Cam wants to be a star as much as a quarterback. And everybody was like, oh, this guy and blah, blah, blah. He's right. I mean, Cam is kind of committed.
Starting point is 01:25:50 There's no market for him. There's no market. And there's not a market for everybody. There's good player. Janavian Clowny is a good player. We'll find a spot. But there's not a huge market for him. And, you know, other players, you know, I contend OBJ has a fairly small
Starting point is 01:26:09 market, but the teams that would use OBJ, Philadelphia, New England could really be a good fit. But, you know, just because you're talented doesn't mean the market's big. What is your maintenance? What is your physical? You know, OBJ's been banged up a lot. Cam's been banged up a lot. Carmelo had been not in great shape. You know, once you get on the market, not everybody ages the same. Brady's age brilliantly. Big Ben and Cam have not. Big Ben's not known as a guy that's totally committed in the offseason. he is. Ben's not aging as well. I still contend Big Ben will never be as good as he was the last time we saw him play. I don't think he's going to recover from his injury. So there's no market for
Starting point is 01:26:51 Cam. And we're getting to a point after this draft, Cincinnati will have their quarterback. Miami will have their quarterback. The Chargers will have their quarterback. I think Indianapolis, if he's available, may draft Jordan Love, they'll have their quarterback. You'll be down in New England doesn't have a quarterback. I mean, you're running out of teams that don't have a quarterback. I mean, I was thinking this morning. After this draft, how many teams won't have their quarterback? New England, Jacksonville, and the Bears have Trabisky and Nick Foles. Neither one's going to be around in five years.
Starting point is 01:27:22 So after this draft, next year we have two superstar college quarterbacks. So two of those teams will probably solve that issue. So there's no market for him. Coming up next, Lance Zerline, NFL network draft analyst. Good dude lives in Houston, does a show in Houston. what's going on with the Texans. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Last night, a blown call changed a game.

Starting point is 01:28:59 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 01:29:16 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff, like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes,
Starting point is 01:29:49 A, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker.
Starting point is 01:30:08 Listen to the Cliverts show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before.
Starting point is 01:30:30 And he knows. without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
Starting point is 01:30:46 He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get to fly.
Starting point is 01:31:00 man, he running up the court, licking his fingers, why he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, ISA, you figure it out real quick. Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app,
Starting point is 01:31:15 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Great to have you in. Lance Zerline, NFL Network, co-host of the bench 97-5 in Houston every morning. His dad, Larry, was an offensive line coach with Bruce Ariens in Pittsburgh and Arizona. Lance has written up draft profiles for 400 players for NFL.com and watch 900 hours of tape.
Starting point is 01:31:35 He is really good at what he does, and I love having him on. So your dad knows Bruce Ariens well. How does Brady fit in Bruce Ariens system at his age? You know, that's an interesting question, Colin, because if most of us will just say things like, well, it's a vertical system, he pushes the ball down the field. You know, you look at the quarterbacks he's had, and they've been guys with armed talent like Carson Palmer, and like, obviously, James Winston most recently.
Starting point is 01:32:03 But Peyton Manning wasn't a guy with a big gun. He wasn't a guy with the cannon. And he was just fine when he worked with Peyton Manning with the Colts. And I'll tell you what's interesting. We get too caught up in schemes, right? This is an outside zone scheme, a Russian attack. This is a, you know, a vertical. They only do vertical stuff.
Starting point is 01:32:20 Well, the fact is every team uses a variety of concepts, passing concepts. And I know, you know, some people there in Tampa say, look, we've got, we've got a variety. of passing concepts. We just fit it with the guy, you know, fit it with the quarterback. So I think too much, Colin, is being made of the passing concepts and the schemes. I think Bruce Ariens will fit whatever fits best with Tom Brady. I think that's what he's going to do. You know, it's funny when I hear these people, and I'm no expert, you are. I hear these people saying, you know, Brady's arm is deteriorated. And my takeaway is, I think over the course of a season by December, he gets fatigue. But I still content.
Starting point is 01:33:00 And his arm looks like it's as good as Derek Carr's and Russell Wilson's. And I still think Tom has a very good arm and can throw a deep ball. I don't think New England's had personnel since Moss left to find open deep receipt. I mean, Nikiel Harry can't separate from you and I. So I don't buy that Brady's kind of a shot fighter. I still see a guy that can throw the ball down the field. I don't know if he can do it in December as well as September. Your takeaway on that.
Starting point is 01:33:29 Yeah, so I agree with you. And I think if you look at just pure velocity on the throws, I think he can crank up more velocity than Joe Burrow can, who will be a rookie in, you know, on the first pick of the draft. So I do think he has that. Now, here's the difference between he and James. James has a stronger arm. But Tom Brady has pretty good numbers in terms of the ability to,
Starting point is 01:33:49 to throw the ball into the deeper windows. You just don't want him doing it all the time. Right. The big difference is, Colin, he's got ball. placement where James doesn't. And so he can put the ball in position for these ball winners like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, who make no mistake about it now. They can turn a 50-50 in their favor.
Starting point is 01:34:11 They can flip that ratio and those odds. And so I think Tom Brady's ball placement, I think that's the reason why I agree with you. I don't think, look, Philip Rivers, it's a problem. Tom Brady, I don't think it's a big problem. I want to shift to the Cowboys. The Cowboys and the Rams are building a team with. or seven rock star contracts. That, of course, means very little depth.
Starting point is 01:34:33 I look at what Dallas has lost defensively, Quinn, Heath, Byron Jones. And this is very much the Rams. The Rams paid everybody on offense. Their left tackle, their quarterback, Todd Gurley, their receivers. All of a sudden, you wake up and you think, wow, Todd Gurley, we're one injury away from a problem.
Starting point is 01:34:50 Gurley gets hurt, not the same offense, even with McVeigh. Dallas now has lost a great corner, a good safety. And they're leading sacker. If DeMarcus Lawrence gets hurt, they could be a mess defensively. I don't love what I'm seeing with Dallas. It feels very L.A. Rams, which is vanity, which is stars. What do you make of, you know, the Rams and let's start with the Cowboys, the players they've lost in the last week?
Starting point is 01:35:19 I think it's a big problem, and what it's going to do is it's going to really put a lot of heat on the Cowboys to make smart free agent acquisitions and to really, have a high hit percentage in this year's draft and next year's draft. And, you know, the Rams basically went out and did their credit card spending with draft picks. Credit card spend, credit card spend, and now the bills are coming due. And as you mentioned, when you put all the eggs in one basket, I understand that we can, you see that model in the NBA. That model doesn't work in the NFL unless all of your rock star players are playing at a high level
Starting point is 01:35:52 and they're all durable, healthy players. When they're not, what you've got is a major problem on your hands because unless you have done a great job with your evaluation. And you can withstand. I mean, you can definitely withstand if you do a great job with your evaluation and your depth as such that it's inexpensive depth that are currently outplaying their contracts. The problem you have with Dallas is now you have to have, I mean, your rock star players are going to have to play like some of the very best players in the league.
Starting point is 01:36:22 The problem you have with the Rams is that you're going to have a hard time getting out of these contracts. And now they're talking about, you know, they want to move this. guy and move that guy, I got to tell you, it's right now it's going to be a buyer's market because everyone knows you're desperate. Yep. And they're going to look to take advantage of the Rams. Yeah, I mean, Gurley got hurt. The Rams' offense wasn't the same.
Starting point is 01:36:41 Right. And DeMarcus Lawrence gets hurt. There is no depth there. Right now, the Cowboys secondary is bad. It's a bad secondary that needs Lawrence to create a pass rush. He's hurt. They weren't very good last year when they were healthy defensively. Lance Zerlinjohn.
Starting point is 01:36:56 Yeah. There's been a great year for pass rush or either. It's not a great year in the draft for pass rush. So that's a concern for me. Now, it is a great year for receivers. And I have defended Bill O'Brien, the coach. He keeps winning his division. I think he's a little over his skis as a GM.
Starting point is 01:37:11 But I think he looked at DeAndre Hopkins and thought, I've got some nice receiver tight end talent. He wants to renegotiate. I'm not up for it. And frankly, this is the deepest wide receiver draft, maybe of my lifetime. I didn't have a problem moving off DeAndre Hopkins. Now, what they got for him, not enough for me.
Starting point is 01:37:31 But you live in Dallas, your thoughts on that situation. Yeah, I live in Houston. You can't say, Dallas. Houston, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Yeah, in Houston. We just can't even have something like that take place, Colin. But, no, I see what you're saying.
Starting point is 01:37:46 Here's my problem. I think it was personality-driven. The stories behind the scenes are accurate. The two guys didn't get along. Now, once we get past that, did they get proper value? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. And you have the comp available apples to apples with Stefan Diggs trade.
Starting point is 01:38:04 So we already had that. Now, to your point, because you look at things a little broader than a lot of fans will, yes, this draft has a lot of wide receiver talent. And where the Texans are drafting in the second round, they can go get a future starter. Now, the bigger concern for me is Will Fuller can't stay healthy and can't stay on the field. If he could, then you could go find a guy like Michael Pittman, who's a big possessive. receiver and say, hey, let's go add Michael Pittman to the burner down the field, and we got ourselves something. And maybe that, and maybe that will be an effective draft pick if he's
Starting point is 01:38:38 available for the Houston Texans. And I do think that having a deep wide receiver draft may be played into this a little bit. But I think more than anything, Colin, the underlying issue is that Bill O'Brien has had some issues personality-wise with some of the guys he's coaching. And I wonder if it's going to cause a problem in the locker room in, you know, in terms of his future relationships. And the big concern for me is number four, Deshaun Watson, making sure Deshaun believes he still has a chance to win at a high level. Well, they'll be deeper at running back. I like their tight end. Laramie Tunsell's a good left tackle.
Starting point is 01:39:14 Yeah, I think they solved their, I don't think they'll be as good without DHOP, but I do think they'll go draft a receiver. And by the way, they're not losing to Kansas City in the AFC. They're not going to outscore them. They're going to have to make stops, so I'd like to see that. Okay, just 30 seconds. Shocked at all, there's no market for Cam. No, not at all, because you can't bring him in for any kind of physical stuff.
Starting point is 01:39:38 And until people are sure that Cam is healthy, I think Cam is going to be sitting on the sidelines. He'll sign eventually, and they'll get it figured out, you know, in terms of how Carolina does it. But I'm not that surprise right now. NFL network, co-host of the bench, 97-5 in Houston. Lance Zerline Dad was an offensive line coach, as we noted earlier. Lance, great having you on. Say hi to the fam. We'll do it.
Starting point is 01:40:04 Thanks, Colin. Jason Whitlock's joining us last hour. We've really rolled through the show today because I've still got a handful of topics here. I want to address. Upgrade to Michelin, Endurance XT, silicone wiper blades built for really tough weather. And it's been, I don't know where you live, but where I live in Southern California, it's been a soggy mess for the last two weeks. The new Michelin endurance X-D silicone wiper blades at Walmart last two times longer than other blades.
Starting point is 01:40:29 Jason Whitlock will stop by for a good 20, 25-minute conversation. I love having him on. We move into Hour 3. Thanks so much for joining us. Lots of options out here. It's the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app.
Starting point is 01:40:47 Ah, hour three. are live in suddenly sunny Los Angeles, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on IHeart Radio. Have her own channel to hurt channel. Fox Sports Radio, FS1, all over our podcast network doubled this week. Our podcast numbers have been great. Digital numbers through the roof, all over Twitter. Thanks so much for including us.
Starting point is 01:41:20 in your content. We're all, this is difficult for all of us and unique. You know, it's funny. You can either be kind of glass half full, glass half empty. I texted my wife this morning. I texted her and she's somewhere with the kids and I said, you know, thanks for being
Starting point is 01:41:35 an amazing mom. This is an opportunity for my family. We've never spent more time just together in a room or two rooms. These are opportunities. What's the new normal? I have no idea. I do think there will be some sports played in empty arenas for a while, maybe starting in four to five weeks. I think the NBA doing that would be pretty interesting.
Starting point is 01:42:02 And then after that, I think we'll have some new normals. We have new normals with airline security post 9-11. We have new normals introduced all the time, often based on tragedies or a crisis or a crisis. events. The new normal, hopefully, is the fist bump. I've never been into the handshake. The new normal, hopefully, is no more close talking. I've never been into close talkers. I'm kind of a social distance liver. There's a difference between lonely and alone. I'm alone often. I'm very happy with it. There'll be some new normals. Some will adapt. Some won't. But thanks so much for choosing us. I kept saying last year. So, you know, a lot of times,
Starting point is 01:42:47 the first book I wrote called You Heard Me. The basic theme was there's two stories out there, the one you're being fed, the consumer, and the truth. And in my life, in my life, the first time I saw this was I was a little boy in rural Washington State. And the Harlem Globetrotters, well, they were a likeness. Maybe it was the East Harlem Globetrotters. they were advertised as the Harlem Globetrotters came to my town. And so my dad bought me tickets, very good seats. And that was in Hoquium, Washington.
Starting point is 01:43:25 And I was all excited because I'd seen him on television. And Curly Neal dribbling around and Metal Arc Lemon half-court shots. Well, we got there. And before we got there, my dad was late. It was a workaholic. He picked me up. He was late. We drove and we went into an alley.
Starting point is 01:43:40 And the Harlem Globetrotter bus was there. And the guys were drinking beer and stuff. smoking, the globetrotters. And so the whole time I'm watching it, I'm thinking, these guys are smoking and drinking before the game. Only I know that. I saw it because we pulled into an alley, we had to
Starting point is 01:43:57 back up and then go find a parking garage or a parking space. And I remember thinking I knew something special. Like everybody else saw the Globetrotters, I'm like, that guy's got a buzz and that guy's a chain smoker. I got behind the wall. Like they didn't want you to see that. They didn't want us
Starting point is 01:44:13 to see it. Like we made eye contact with them. Globetrotters are like, you're not supposed to see that. We're smoking marvellous and knocking down Bud Light. If there was Bud Light then. Anywho, the point being, there's a story behind the story. So last year, the L.A. Rams, there was Sean McVeigh would say, you know, I just, the reason we're not using Todd Gurley is I'm an idiot. This is all on me. That was the story the Rams were projecting. But I live in Los Angeles and no place. players and people on the staff. That wasn't the real story. The story is Todd Gurley got paid and Todd Gurley got hurt and Todd Gurley changed. He's not great for the locker room right now.
Starting point is 01:44:54 And they've wanted him out for a year and they can't figure how to get rid of him. They don't want him there. Now they could keep him there, draft another running back and have him sulk. But the truth is he got his money, he got hurt and it's not the same Todd Gurley and it's not personality-wise, kind of the same Todd Gurley. You know, it's not great for the room. It's he's a bad guy or a bad teammate, but it's not good for the room, and they're trying to get out of it. Now, a lot of this is Lesney, the general manager. And I like less, and I know less, and I like him. He really likes skill people.
Starting point is 01:45:26 Brandon Cookstiel. I hated it. Todd Gurley Early, didn't like it. Jared Goff, I understand. I'll defend him on the Jared Goff because I do think Jared Goff has proven. He got to a Super Bowl. He beat Drew Breeze in New Orleans. Call or not.
Starting point is 01:45:39 Jared Goff is a franchise quarterback. Gurley, don't pay running backs early. Brandon Cooks didn't like it. But it's L.A. They were a new team. They got to sell ticket. It's a distracted market. They didn't really have a face of the franchise outside of Todd Gurley.
Starting point is 01:45:52 So their thing was, he's our face. Let's pay him. I wouldn't have done it, but I get it. So the reality is now, though, is this story is now coming out. Todd Gurley to get cut. You don't understand. If the Rams cut him, they'd have to take a cap hit of $13 million this year, nine next year, 10 the following year and 12 and a half in 2023.
Starting point is 01:46:18 And they're considering cutting him. That tells you it's not just, you know, we would have given him the ball more, but as a coach, I forgot he was back there. No. It's like my Globetrotter story. There's a truth, and the truth is ugly, and nobody, and the Globetrotters didn't want you to know, they were smoking Marlboros and knocking down Coors light right before Tipoff.
Starting point is 01:46:44 The Rams didn't want you. you to know this, but it's so bad and so unhealthy right now for them, there's stories out that could cut him. Don't think they will. I think they're looking to trade him. In fact, they know they are. Not going to get many takers. It's going to be one of those contracts. Remember the Sam Bradford contract? He signed a huge contract. Good rookie year. Second year he got hurt. And it kind of changed the CBA. The Jamarcus Russell, Sam Bradford contracts. Jamarcus was a bust. Bradford underachieved and got hurt. It kind of changed the CBA. People said, you can't pay a rookie quarterback that much.
Starting point is 01:47:16 If they get hurt or if they bad, you're trapped. I think this girly contract is going to hurt a lot of running backs. Like a lot of teams are like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. No thanks. That's not to say Sequin Barclay wouldn't be worth big money. But again, if you get two more good years out of Sequin Barclay, you may have the best years out of it. I just think this girly deal is a cautionary tale for a lot of NFL teams at that position.
Starting point is 01:47:41 And, you know, it's funny. Like, things change. Three-point shooters in the NBA are a premium. Power forwards or not. It goes back and forth. Wide receivers are now a premium. Quarterbacks are a premium. Left tackles are a premium.
Starting point is 01:47:54 A great corner is a premium. Running backs, they're not. This is the way sports is. It's cyclical. Sometimes you pay for things. Sometimes you don't. Years ago, fullbacks. Then they disappeared for a decade.
Starting point is 01:48:08 Now you know what's in vogue? A good fullback. New England's running game wasn't nearly as good last year without their fullback. San Francisco's running game this year was as good as the health of their fullback. So it, you know, football has been one of these sports. You see it and everything. Baseball now, bullpens as valuable or more valuable as starters. I mean, when I was a kid growing up, the Cincinnati Reds dominated baseball and had one decent reliever. It was starting pitching and offense. And then baseball went into a lot of starting pitching. You paid huge money for starting
Starting point is 01:48:37 pitching. Now it's bullpins. Now it's home run hitters. Now nobody wants ground ball hitters. So sports and basketball. If you can't shoot, Clint Capella, you know, not a lot of teams want you. Can't have two non-shooters on the floor at the same time. Total liability in today's NBA. Here's another quick story. Talking to a friend in the restaurant business. And he was talking about the wine business is kind of bushy.
Starting point is 01:49:13 Napa, Sonoma, Italy, reasling. in Germany and, you know, it's very high-end. Wine is very sophisticated. If you wear glasses and drink wine, your IQ, it's been verified. It'll go up dramatically. And so the wine business, a lot of Silicon Valley money, a lot of Hollywood money, a lot of athlete money. In the last 10, 15, 20 years has gone into making wine.
Starting point is 01:49:40 The problem is now there's so many craft beers and there's so many good liquors and there's vodka and tequila brand. There's too much wine and not enough wine drinkers. It's oversaturated in the market. It's harder to make money in wine. And I'm thinking about that. Cam Newton has no market right now. No market.
Starting point is 01:50:03 And I looked this morning, if we figure the Bengals will draft a quarterback, the Chargers will draft a quarterback, and the Dolphins will draft the quarterback. and I still think the Colts, if available, will draft one. That'll be four teams with the quarterback. And the college quarterbacks now, the hit rate is much higher than even five years ago. Outside of like a Paxton Lynch, nobody is a bust. Like everybody works, kind of.
Starting point is 01:50:30 Baker's not a bust. Baker's not a bus. Baker's had his problems. He's not a bust. Donald's not a bust. Again, dysfunctional organizations hasn't been as good as we thought, but not bust. They can play. If you look right now, if the Bengals and the,
Starting point is 01:50:44 dolphins and the Chargers and perhaps the Colts draft a quarterback. We have saturation. It's like wine. We've reached the saturation point. The Patriots don't have a quarterback. The Jaguars don't. And the Chicago Bears have two. They're not in love with either, Foles and Trubisky. You're getting to a point where the NFC West has Jared G., Jimmy G, Russell, Wilson, Kyler Murray. They may not need a quarterback for 10 years in that division. Wentz, Prescott, Daniel Jones, and Dwayne Haskins. If Dwayne Haskins hits, and I still think he's a big, strong kid who can throw strikes. They may not need a quarterback in that division for eight to ten years.
Starting point is 01:51:25 I mean, you start looking around. Lamar, Big Ben and Baker-Mayfield. After the Bengals draft Joe Burrell, that division may not need a quarterback for four years. And then if the Steelers draft somebody, it'll be another eight. We've reached a saturation point. There's not a lot of market for a semi-committed, often-injured, inaccurate, 85-quarterback rating Cam Newton. there's just not much of a market for it. These college quarterbacks are coming to the NFL.
Starting point is 01:51:53 The NFL now is putting their arms around college concepts, and they're hitting. Don't say Josh Rosen yet. Do not give up on Josh Rosen. I saw this morning somebody suggested, and I don't think it's a terrible suggestion. I think this is very interesting. Bill Belichick and Brian Flores are tight. Belichick calls and says, send Josh Rosen up here. Super smart.
Starting point is 01:52:21 I think Josh Rosen, Jared Stidim, see who wins the job. That is not crazy. Get him for cheap. And I think Josh Rosen, I'll say this, that is the perfect place for him. A demanding academic head coach. By the way, Josh Rosen's family knows the Northeast very well. I'm not going to give you the specific island, but they go out there all the time. Josh knows the area.
Starting point is 01:52:44 I think Josh Rosen in New England is as good as he can do. And I think if I was New England, I'm not going to give Jared Stidham the job. I want to push him. Why should I pay all that money for Andy Dalton? Bring Josh Rosen up. Push Jared Stidham. That makes a lot of sense. And we know Flores and Belichick are tight.
Starting point is 01:53:07 In fact, I think they've already done a deal or two. They've been on the phone because I just saw a situation. I don't have it in front of me, but Miami. has already done and made a couple of moves with Patriot players. So just keep that in mind. Jason Whitlock, always entertaining. My buddy's joining us next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 01:53:27 Led Zeppelin. So my friend Jason Whitlock, speak for yourself at Whitlock Jason. He was on Tuesday right after I got the text Brady was going to Tampa. But more importantly, Jason Whitlock, according to his Twitter account, in the last week, discovered a band, I'm not joking, called Led Zeppelin. And now, apparently, you had heard of it before, right? Yeah, I'd heard of Led Zeppelin, but I just, I wasn't really in tune with their music. Stairway to Heaven, I thought, was an Aero Smith song.
Starting point is 01:54:03 Yeah, it wasn't. So now, are you listening to it all the time? Yes, I've listened to it for a week straight. deep off into it. Love 10 years gone. Love ramble on. Love, hey, hey, what can I do? Now, you were also late on Adele, if I recall.
Starting point is 01:54:24 Yeah, very late on Adelaide. I discovered Adele like three years ago. And then I spent like 18 months listening to nothing but Adel. Look, I grew up R&B and rap and didn't really expand my horizons much past Bon Jovi. And so this has been awesome, though. This is like, it's like people that, you know, I'm big on the TV show The Wire. People are like, oh, I've never watched it. I'm going to start now.
Starting point is 01:54:50 And I'm so jealous of them because it's like it's a great experience. This experience with Led Zeppelin is awesome. Well, I've never been one of those people that gets in line at a store to get like a phone first. That's not me as a consumer. I'm late to everything. And I don't know if it's an economic reason where I don't want to pay more. But I've been late to a million things. I, you know, Entourage, I didn't start watching until year three, and I had to go back and watch Entourage.
Starting point is 01:55:18 I just missed the first two years totally. 40 years late, though, is kind of extreme, though. Yeah, I will say Narcos, I was on very early. But by and large, you know, you and I are kind of workaholics, right? So I'm not somebody that gets in line first for products. No. Let me just say this. I had a Corona thought.
Starting point is 01:55:38 We had Dr. Drew on about an hour ago. Yeah. And I thought he was added context. He's well connected. He said, listen, let's use the doctor as the North Star, not political people and talking heads on TV who are using words to ramp up fear. How are you dealing psychologically with no sports? You know, you're older like me, the virus.
Starting point is 01:55:57 You know, you're alone more. How is, are you handling it? I see it as an opportunity, to be honest with you, Colin. I try to take a positive outlook on situations like this. And so for me personally, I'm using it as an opportunity to address my weight problem and really focus in on diet and exercise. And it's been going phenomenally. So, you know, I can't say I'm happy about it. It's pretty boring.
Starting point is 01:56:27 I love to have sports to watch right now. The NBA would be pretty incredible right now. But for me, it's an opportunity to focus in on other things. And for me, diet and exercise has really gone really well for me. during this time. By the way, speaking of opportunity, Adam Silver asked yesterday about the potential to alter the league schedule and playoff schedule going forward. And he said, yes, we have discussed it. And I've always thought it was best served to start at Christmas, you know, get it to late May, cut it down to about 70 games, not 82. And then June, July, August, you wrap up at the playoffs,
Starting point is 01:57:05 have a draft day later, have free agency, 10 days later, Summer League, Labor Day. handed to the NFL. That makes sense to me. I don't know if you're a silver fan. I like the fact he feels like to me the NFL and that he is willing to listen to new paradigms and new ideas. What was your take away and his ESPN interview? Yeah, I like the fact that Adam Silver's open to new ideas and open to restructuring the way the NBA goes about his season. I think everybody's known for a long time. 82 games is just too many. And I think when you factor in just the enormous salary increases in professional sports and in basketball, I think it's just harder for these guys to make all this money and still get up for the regular season.
Starting point is 01:57:55 I'm somebody that wants to see him cut it down to 62 games. And I'm somebody, I like his little mid-season opportunity to have a little mid-season tournament. And then the biggest thing I would love to see that I've never heard discussed is, I believe, the first three games of the NBA finals should be played in Las Vegas. And then you go home and home the last four games or the first two games played in Las Vegas. Then whoever's got home court advantage has the extra home game in the last five or whatever. But what the NBA has been missing is like the NFL, has an event that you can mark on your calendar a year, 10 years out, you know where the Super Bowl location is, and all the media can descend on one city and cover that event.
Starting point is 01:58:49 The Final Four has it. College football now has it. The NBA needs something where it's a year out. Everybody's going to Las Vegas to watch the first two NBA or the first three NBA finals games, and it's a big celebration of basketball and the NBA. I wish they would adopt something like that, a central location for the first two or three games of the NBA finals, so that you can really celebrate the game. And it's a lot easier in these times where the media spends less on travel.
Starting point is 01:59:21 If people know a year in advance, hey, we're all going to Vegas on these dates for the first. It's a lot easier than going crisscrossing the country back and forth. By the way, selfishly, if you were Adam Silver, fewer games, my stars last longer, fewer injuries. I mean, the NBA, you know the players are before it. You know Adam Silver's for it. You'd have to convince the owners, listen. You're going to have six few. You know, I say 70 games, 68.
Starting point is 01:59:46 Okay, seven, eight fewer NBA home games, but you're going to get three more years of LeBron. Like, you're going to get your stars to last longer. They're not going to be as beat up. So, you know, it's always about convincing owners. That's what it's about convincing. I almost think it's about convincing the players to take the 15, 20 percent pay cut. and I really don't know if it would be that significant over the long haul
Starting point is 02:00:11 because the scarcity of games, I think, would increase the television value. By the way, the NFL's got a new CBA, 17 games. It was split down the middle like America. You know, I said when I looked at the initial proposal, I thought it was reasonable, but I did think the players needed to ask for certain things, and I think they got mostly what they want. I thought that there was a hypocrisy. all I ever hear about is everybody hates the 1%.
Starting point is 02:00:37 The NFL has a new CBA, which mostly benefits everybody but the top 1%, and everybody in the media complain about it. What is your takeaway on 17 games in the NFL? What is your takeaway on what it looks like going forward? And did the players lose, which many in the media claim? Well, I obviously, I'm a football fan, and football content is great for us. And so I love the 17 games. I think where I was disappointed for the players is I thought they should be getting closer to 50% of the revenue.
Starting point is 02:01:10 I think that only went up to 48, maybe 48 and a half. I was disappointed there. You know, I've been a longtime critic of DeMarie Smith. I think he's weak. I don't think he's nearly as good as Gene Upshaw. He hasn't partnered with the NFL in the proper way. And so I'm hoping this is his last time when again. is a 10-year deal, so he's probably out.
Starting point is 02:01:35 But they need new leadership in the NFLPA. Again, love the 17 games, wish the players that got a bigger cut of the money. Yeah, 48.5% is not terrible. Not terrible, but it should be 50. You and I aren't getting 48.5% of the revenue. I'll tell you that. And nobody's watching us because of our bosses. We can make that argument, right?
Starting point is 02:01:55 Okay, so I said earlier today that Carmelo Anthony was always semi-committed you know, he was had a great fantastic college reputation, but he didn't move into the game. It moved away from him. And I look at Cam Newton now. And there are stories that he can play, but he'll have to be a bench guy, not a starter. And I say to myself, you know,
Starting point is 02:02:18 he's really, Cam Newton's become Carmelo Anthony, where if you don't commit, you age very quickly. Carmelo aged very quickly. Cam's age very quickly. And I never thought there'd be a huge. huge market for Cam Newton. There appears to be none as of this morning or this afternoon. Your thoughts? It's amazing because there is no market for Cam Newton. And look, I think it's health, but I also think that Cam is an odd person, maybe a borderline weirdo. I think the whole hairstyle
Starting point is 02:02:52 deal, the whole fashion show before and after games is just too much. It's not the proper role for a quarterback who's in that sort of leadership position. And I love your analogy to Carmelo Anthony, although I think that's almost a disservice to Carmelo Anthony because Cam Newton has generational once in a lifetime talent should have been one of the greatest players in the NFL. Look, he had an MVP season. But I think this is one of those situations. when you go back to the critics of Cam Newton coming out of the draft.
Starting point is 02:03:34 And for some reason, I can't think of a guy's name. Nolan Narwaki. Nolan Narwaki. He took all that flack, and he was right. And then Peter King took a lot of flack for the quote about the global icon. And that Cam said this, I think, at the Combine or whatever, and everybody. And Peter King was right. And that reporting on that story was right in terms of Cam's priority.
Starting point is 02:03:59 wanting to come in and be this global icon rather than coming in just like, I just want to be a great quarterback and let that take care of me being a global icon. Cam's priorities have been wrong, the NFL. Look, at these prices that they're paying players, all of this complaining or all of this, what NFL owner, when you're paying a guy $30 million, you don't want him distracted. You want that guy with a single-minded focus about what can I do to earn this $35 million, $25 million, nobody's feeling sorry for these guys. No one is worried about you building your individual brand when we're paying you $20, $25 million a year.
Starting point is 02:04:46 And so I just think the NFL, the moves I'm seeing them make, it's like Eric Reed getting released in Carolina, even after they just gave them an extension like a year ago. if you're not committed to this game at these prices, you better be awesome. You better be, look at your Davian Clowny. And again, I don't know where his commitment is in terms of off-field, but I just think people are like, man, this dude's got a whole lot of talent that he's never fully realized,
Starting point is 02:05:19 and do we really want to spend a bunch of this money on a guy like Deidion Clowny? The NFL's like these owners have made up their mind. Like we're drawing a line in the sand. If you're not really committed, we're not really committing all this cash to you. Yeah, and Matt Rule's a culture guy. And so Eric Reed, Cam Newton, I'm going forward. I don't really think you fit my culture.
Starting point is 02:05:42 And so, you know, I mean, new coaches, I just look at Cam and I've always thought to myself, sometimes the game moves into you and sometimes the game moves away from you. And I think Cam and Carmelo also lack a certain self-awareness where, you know, everybody says they love them, but nobody really seeks to play with them. Now, that leave. But Colin, I mean, go just look at our industry. And for the talented people, salaries have exploded. Yeah. And executives are like, hey, man, we need you all in here.
Starting point is 02:06:18 We're not paying you $150,000. dollars. And so if you want to go dabble in this or dabbling that and do, you know, when you get paid a lot of money, there's a lot of expectations and a lot of responsibility to go along with it. And I just think that's a tough lesson that a lot of these athletes are having to learn. And I hope that there are guys looking at what's happening to a Cam Newton and learning a lesson from that. By the way, Brady now, Tampa Bay, you've marinated for a couple of days, your thoughts? I feel a bit concerned, but because, you know, I think there are people arguing that I can't
Starting point is 02:07:00 disagree with like, hey, man, is that offensive line? Is that offensive line great for an older quarterback? And look, Brady is a great decision maker with the ball and with those weapons. I'm sure he'll get the ball out of his hands quick. Overall, I got to say, I like it. It's going to be the story of the year. and I can't wait to see how it plays out. Here's the number that I think helps Tampa.
Starting point is 02:07:29 Their quarterback, James Winston, alone, had 35 turnovers. And they went 7 and 9 and had 6 one possession losses. So, I mean, Jason, if Brady just cuts the 36 turnovers down to 12, they're going to win some games. Yeah, if they go from 36 to 12 and play like they did, I think they win four or five more games. No, listen, Todd Bowles, I think, is the classic great vice president, not a president. At the end of last year, Tampa's defense, Jason, it was pretty good.
Starting point is 02:08:05 It was pretty good. Yeah, I love their whole little coaching dynamic from Bruce Arias to Todd Bowles to Byron Leftwich. And I think it'll be, I think Brady's going to go in there so enthusiastic. And so just wanting to be a part of something special of Cherry on the tops, I think he and Byron Leifwood are going to work well together because I think Brady will take some joy. And if he's there and Byron Lefwood then gets a head coaching job because of the way he worked together with Brady,
Starting point is 02:08:40 I think that's a great look for Brady. He's helped an African-American coach along the path. I just think there are so many, so much positive energy and optimism and just work at it that it's going to be down there in Tampa, that it makes me, you know, if they set the over under on wins at nine, I'm going to take the over. Yeah, I saw, yes, somebody said yesterday, was it eight? Oh, wow.
Starting point is 02:09:08 Yeah, I'd bet the over on that. By the way, New England is, what's New England's over under, like eight to nine? I take the over on that, too. I don't know, you better, you better. Do you know, yeah, Jared Stedham. I know Bill Belichick is still there. How about this, though? We said this this morning.
Starting point is 02:09:26 Flores and Belichick are tight. They've already done a couple deals. Call Miami and say send Josh Rosen. It's not terrible. Academic kid. Nah. All right. I don't think he's again.
Starting point is 02:09:40 He's not about this life. He came in wanting to save the world and all that. Just go play football, man, and save the world in your 40s. I just don't think he's as committed to football as you need to be. By the way, what do you do the rest of the day? Led Zeppelin, Treadmill. Literally, I'm about to go take a walk through Century City. I'm about to do a two-and-a-half-hour walk, come back home,
Starting point is 02:10:04 cook me some dinner, eat dinner by 5 o'clock, and dive into some Netflix, probably. All right. That sounds very interesting. Jason Whitlock, great talking to you. Thank you. Thank you. Better newsman, John Goulet. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 02:10:26 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I can't believe it took Whitlock until 2020 to discover Led Zeppelin. Yeah. I wasn't even alive when Led Zeppelin broke up, and I discovered them 20 years before he did. So something that has never been said in the NFL before is everyone wants to join the Bucks. But that's apparently what's happening.
Starting point is 02:10:46 According to Adam Schaefter, an unexpectedly high number of players have reached out to the Buccaneers letting them know they want to join Brady and the New Look Bucks. It's very similar to the LeBron effect. Whenever he goes somewhere to Miami, to Cleveland, to L.A., players have seemed to just flock and want to come to them.
Starting point is 02:11:06 What I don't understand, though, is that for an NBA player, if you have a great player like LeBron, you're almost guaranteed to be a great team that can compete for titles. No matter how good you are, a quarterback, unless you're Mahomes. Like, Brady doesn't auto. automatically make the Bucks a Super Bowl team. Are you surprised that so many players want to join Brady? No, I think they think it's going to be fun.
Starting point is 02:11:26 I think I've said this before. I lived in Tampa. Beautiful people, beaches, no state tax, Bruce Ariens pro player. It's an expressive organization. The owner has money. They have very, very good facilities. You know, Clearwater beaches down the road. They are not, they are not Cincinnati, Detroit, Cleveland.
Starting point is 02:11:47 The only thing they haven't done right is the quarterback. They've got a good owner. They've had good GMs. They won a Super Bowl. They've had Gruden, Sam Wyshe, Bruce Ariens, Tony Dungey. Those are great coaches. Tampa's a place where a lot of famous people hung out. Miami, Tampa.
Starting point is 02:12:06 Tampa is, you know, Orlando's family, Disneyland. Tampa's fun. Tampa's a party town. Yvore City. So what's interesting to me then is if so many players want to join Brady, they obviously still believe in him. Then it's surprising to me how few teams were interested in him.
Starting point is 02:12:23 According to Peter King, he was on WEEI this morning in Boston. And he talked about how there was a lack of market for Brady and surprised his agent Don Yee. I think that Don Yee being the good agent that he is, tried to get
Starting point is 02:12:39 other teams interested and couldn't. You would think that if Tom Brady is on the market, people are all going to be lined up, making their pitches. Don Yee has not told his story yet, and I don't know if he will, but I'm a little surprised it came down to two teams. First of all, and I love Peter. I disagree. The Chargers, I've been sourced, wanted it. Chargers in bucks confirmed we're in. And New England. They wanted him. Apparently, Belichick was surprised he left.
Starting point is 02:13:05 He told Indian Oakland, no thank you. So that's five. How many 40? Cam doesn't have a team. He had five. And by the way, Chargers roster good. Tampa roster good. Indy roster good. New England roster solid. Oakland was the only real rebuilding team that I think kind of reached out. He had five offers at 43. That's a nice group of, that's more than Andy Dalton. There's also the idea the Niners were interested.
Starting point is 02:13:32 Oh, that timeout. They weren't. So that's another one. That's six. They may not publicly admit it. But if you remember, I think Shreger brought this up, none of, they didn't publicly deny it either. They never said they weren't interested. No, I was told by a.
Starting point is 02:13:47 somebody in the player representation business that it was for about a week people. It was discussed, right? It was discussed. So that's San Francisco, Chargers, Tampa Bay, New England, Indie Oakland. That's six for a 43-year-old court. That's six more than Cam has. That's six, I mean, that's six more than Andy Dalton has right now.
Starting point is 02:14:10 And finally, there was a trade today. The Lions traded cornerback Darius Slay to the Eagles for a third and fifth round pick. The Eagles wasted no time in giving Slay a contract extension, three years, 50 million. That makes him the new highest paid corner in the league. Byron Jones held that title for all of two days. We had Fox NFL insider Peter Schrager on earlier, and he reacted to the deal.
Starting point is 02:14:32 I love what Philadelphia has done, and this is why you got to love what Howie Roosman's all about. I could tell you they were very, very in on Byron Jones. Byron Jones opts to go to the Dolphins, and that really was a setback for the Eagles. They were all in on Byron Jones, and they might be got a better player in Darry's Slay. And that's what makes the Eagles so fascinating.
Starting point is 02:14:48 There's always contingency plans. So they get Hargrave, the big defensive tackle, we're going to pair with Fletcher Cox up front. Suddenly, their defense, and that Jim Schwartz, wide nine, you now have Hargraves and Fletcher Cox, two of the best defensive tackles in the sport up front. And now you have Darius Slay in the defensive backfield. And you look at yourself, say, okay, this isn't bad.
Starting point is 02:15:06 We did pretty good. We didn't get Byron Jones, but you know what? We're going to be just fine. Stregers all in on the Eagles, are you? No, no. Last year I thought they were a Super Bowl team. I'm all in on teams where I like the old. owner like the GM, like the quarterback, and like the coach.
Starting point is 02:15:18 Philadelphia, I think, is A to A minus and all that stuff. They had cluster injuries. That's what kept them from making a lot. So a veteran newsman, John Goulet. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. By the way, massive trade alerts in the draft. We'll wrap up our show.
Starting point is 02:15:41 Interesting things to discuss. Don't go anywhere. One more herd? Refind your prime with MDrive. Eagles get Darius Slay at Corner. Very interesting now because Cincinnati looks like they'll take Burrow. Washington Chase Young. It looks like.
Starting point is 02:16:16 like Detroit, if they still keep their number three spot now has to take a corner, Jeff Okuda, meaning the New York Giants at the number four spot have a lot of leverage. A lot of teams want a quarterback. Giants have the number four spot and don't need one. Also, here's just something else to think about. The LA Chargers acquired corner Chris Harris yesterday. So now they have three legitimate corners. Chris Harris, Casey Hayward, and Desmond King.
Starting point is 02:16:40 Do they call Detroit with a number three pick and say, we'll give you one of the corners, give us the number three spot. We'll give you a Hayward and a draft pick, get us the number three spot. And Detroit can drop down. Not that far either. So keep your eye on the chargers. Keep your eye on the chargers.
Starting point is 02:16:57 They want a college quarterback, and I think they have one they like. I'll say this. I'll put a stamp on it. I think Justin Herbert is going to be better than people think. And if Joe Burrow goes to Cincinnati, he's not going to be as good as everybody thinks. Because where you land matters.
Starting point is 02:17:16 We don't know that, right? Josh Allen right now is winning more games than Sam Darnold. Darnold was considered a much better prospect. Go back and look at all the draft prospectus. By the way, Josh Allen right now is better than Baker-Mayfield statistically. Not on most boards. So he went to Wyoming. He played two good teams his last year.
Starting point is 02:17:35 Iowa, Oregon. He was awful. So, you know, where you land matters. Justin Herbert falls to that Chargers roster with a grown-up, Rod Taylor, you know, helping somewhat to alleviate the initial need to start. Justin Herbert with the Chargers is going to win games. He's big. He's rangy.
Starting point is 02:17:56 He's got a total gun of an arm. He's a four-point student. He's bright. He doesn't do a ton off script. But that was because the Oregon coaches. And I've had NFL guys tell me this. They didn't like Oregon's offense at all. But at the end of the year in the Rose Bowl, when they take the reins off him, because
Starting point is 02:18:12 it's the last game, he was very. running all over the field. So I think Justin Herbert can make plays with his feet. Oregon didn't allow it because they probably didn't trust with their good offensive line that didn't trust their backup quarterback. They thought we got a great old line. They thought
Starting point is 02:18:28 they were playing for like the national championship or for the playoff system. And so why risk your quarterback until the Rose Bowl when you have no games left? So I think Herbert's better than people think. And I think Burroughs I think Burrow and Herbert, I think Herbert's just got a better arm.
Starting point is 02:18:43 I think there's a lot of similarities. Herbert's got the better arm. All right. It's not everything. Something. And I don't think Herbert's that much less of an athlete than Joe Burrell. I think Joe Burrell is a good athlete. He's Tony Romo.
Starting point is 02:18:57 He's not Lamar Jackson. I don't think he's, you know, I don't even know if he's Aaron Rogers. He's not Steve Young, not Russell Wilson. Dr. Drew, Drew Pinski was on earlier today. He added some context, very well connected. And we brought him on the show today. And I just said, listen, you know a lot of doctors. you're connected to this stuff
Starting point is 02:19:17 and I said there's you turn on the television and it's frightening and we had he had a great answer right off the bat on why things may not be as bad as the media will tell you on the coronavirus we are not going to be Italy
Starting point is 02:19:35 and they freely admit they were unprepared they did not see it coming and they do not have the adequate resources the reason we won't become Italy is we have stamped this thing down and we have massively prepared our system. No one does better than the American health care system when it comes to preparing resources, delivering resources and innovation. And I would urge everyone, just listen to Anthony Fauci.
Starting point is 02:20:00 Let him be your North Star. Just do what he tells you and we will be fine. Everything else you see in the press is them trying to capture your eyes and they're not helping things. They're making things much worse to the point now where the panic is worse than the output.
