Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

When you have talent, you are given another chance. Here's Chris Mannix. All right, it is fitting on this boxing Hall of Fame weekend that my guest this week is someone that can get into the Hall of Fame anytime he wants. Ouch.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Whenever he buys a ticket. Sergio Mora, the former junior middleweight champion. and Zone broadcaster back on the podcast. What's up, man? Hey, listen, I did fight two Hallfamers, or at least one guaranteed hallfamer in Shane Mosley, and one that will get in and Vernon the Viper Forest. By the way, speaking of your former opponents,
Starting point is 00:03:15 did you see Alfredo Angulo? He's coming back this weekend. That's right. I wish him the best, but it's not a good look. Not a good look, but you know what? The hunger's still there for the dog. You still looking for that rematch? Snakes eat mice.
Starting point is 00:03:30 And right now, no, I'm not coming back for anything. My legs are shot. That's a liar. We don't need to go back down this road, but you would come back for the right price. Absolutely. Come on, man. All right, a lot to get into with Sergio Amora. We are recording this in Southern California where Jaime Mungia will fight yet again this time against Jimmy Kelly.
Starting point is 00:03:53 We're going to talk about that fight. But Sergio, before we get into Mungia and his next test, I want to look back at this past weekend. Devin Haney goes to Australia and dominates George Campos. It wins a unanimous decision. I thought that two of the judges' scorecards at 116, 112 were too close. You know, Haney won that fight, 10-2, 9-3, probably at the worst. And honestly, it went exactly as I expected. I mean, Haney is just the better boxer than Cambosis.
Starting point is 00:04:22 And Cambosis, who took advantage of mistakes that Teofima-Lopez made last year, just didn't find any in Devin Haney. Devin Haney's put on a boxing clinic and dominated that fight from start to finish. What did you think of the fight and Haney's performance in particular? Man, listen, I wasn't there, but I'm... We know you weren't there.
Starting point is 00:04:41 It was in Australia. I think 51,000 people were disappointed. 50,000 that were there and, of course, myself. Probably 40-ish-thous. Okay, well, round off, but I was one of the disappointed because I expected... I expected more. I expected more from someone that I seen with my own two eyes.
Starting point is 00:04:57 I called this fight. I seen what he was able to do against Tio Fima Lopez when Lopez was riding the gravy train. I expected more from Cambosis. He was talking to talk, and when the lights turned on, he didn't walk to walk. But we got to give a lot of credit to Devin Haney because I said this before, Mannix, and you looked down on me. But Haney has the best jab in boxing. I mean, Galafkin has a power shotgun jab that lands at a high percentage. He throws 10-11 or lands 10-11 around.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Okay, the ratio's there. But the snap, the different types of jab, controlling the entire. fight from 1 to 12 with a jab, hurting you with a jab, making you cautious not coming in to do anything. That's beauty. And he shut him down. I didn't give Cambosis more than two rounds. I thought it was 10-2.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Brilliant performance by the undisputed lightweight king. You've been saying for a while that Haney does have the best jab in boxing. I'll give you that. Cambosis, against Tafima Lopez, he took advantage of a fighter that was trying to knock his block off. Tea Fima Lopez wanted to stop Cambosus in one round, and he fought that whole fight looking for the knockout. When fighters fight that way, you can take advantage of that. You can capitalize on their mistakes.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Devin Haney didn't come to Australia to knock George Cambosis out. He came out there to out jab him, and he did. To win combinations, and he did. He came there to win a decision, and George Camposus can't beat Devin Haney when Devin Haney operates like that. Devin Haney, I don't want to say he's unbeatable because I, I still want to see what happens when Devin faces bigger punchers.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Yeah, I see you kind of motioning on your jaw. But, you know, we'll get into the idea of a rematch. But I don't see how George Cambosus can ever beat Devin Haney when he operates like that. And when Devin Haney is fighting like that, he's tough for anybody to beat. I expected to hear an excuse from Cambosis. But, you know, he's a classy guy. I got to give it to Gambosis. Look, he made no excuses.
Starting point is 00:06:53 He looked wagering to me at the press conference. He didn't make weight the first two times on the scale. Which is weird. He's a smaller guy. Like, Devin's the bigger guy. But he's been a lightweight his entire career. I think Devin Haney was a small lightweight of 131 or something like that. But he's the physically bigger guy, Devin Haney.
Starting point is 00:07:11 He is. Yeah, that'll give you. But Cambosis has been a career lightweight. He's a big guy. I mean, he fought Tio Fino Fino, Fino, Lopez. He was able to drop him, hurt him. And Lopez is damn near of welterweight. But I didn't hear no excuses.
Starting point is 00:07:23 So he was a gentleman. He was a warrior. But he didn't feel. fight like a warrior and that's what I think we're all disappointed because when the venues there, lights are on, come on, man, it's time to shine. Even if it means not fighting your best fight and and getting bloody and dropped and losing a decision, at least you tried, at least you showed up, at least you gave the fans what they wanted, what they came to see out of you. Well, people flew 16 hours from, you know, the United States to go see. We didn't see that. We've seen a complete shutout,
Starting point is 00:07:52 a strategic, beautiful win, one-sided victory by Haney. And Yeah, two judges, 116, 112, terrible. Yeah, I just think if Devin's going to fight that way, George has no chance of beating, which brings me to my next point. George has an automatic rematch clause in that contract. He indicated strongly after the fight. He intends to exercise that rematch clause.
Starting point is 00:08:14 He went to Devin's locker room after the fight. Congratulated him and ended it by saying, I'll see you in November. Now, there's a lot of money on the table for both guys in a rematch. But if you're George Cambosos, do you exercise? size that rematch clause for an immediate rematch or do you look for opportunities to defer the fight one fight down the line look if you're asking me and you know me and cambos has you know similarities in common we like quoting you know philosophers we use books and he said deception and the art of war
Starting point is 00:08:43 and all this other stuff which was nonsense it was nonsense but i like the way he thinks and i like his swag and i like his style so no i won't take an interim fight because i know that he thinks like me i'll go right back into the rematch, going hungrier, going with a different game plan, and just let Haney, give Haney all the cards. No more coming to Australia. No, everything's on Haney. Where do you want to fight? You want to fight in Las Vegas?
Starting point is 00:09:06 I'm going to come to your hometown. Cambosis seems to fight better in other people's countries, other people's hometowns. That's when he performs the best. I hated fighting in my hometown, man. It's my worst performances were at the Staples Center, Arrowhead Pond, Honda Center, or at any single time I fought in my hometown. I look like crap. I barely squeaked out decisions because there was just too much pressure.
Starting point is 00:09:27 People asking me for tickets. I'm going for the knockout. No, no, no, no. Fighting someone else's backyard, let the pressure be on then. I would exercise the rematch clause just because of pride. Yeah, but the problem is a lot of the money for this fight came from Australia, from the government down there. And even though in a rematch, they're not going to be able to draw 40 plus thousand.
Starting point is 00:09:50 They can probably do 20 plus thousand in a small. smaller arena, which is a lot more than what Cambos and Haney could do at any venue in the U.S. Haney has not proven to be a draw in the U.S. Not yet. Not yet. But like that performance we saw last weekend, while dominant, isn't going to win him a whole bunch of new fans. And Cambosis, his biggest performance was against Teofimo, which was in front of a pro Teofimo crowd at the Hulu theater at MathS Square Garden. So I think financially it makes sense. And that's got to be the bottom line for Cambos. I mean, I know he wants to get his belts back, but this is another crack at a career-defining payday.
Starting point is 00:10:30 These two fights are going to set George Campbell's up financially for the rest of his life, and so for that reason, he can't walk away from it. Not unless whatever deal he cuts both guarantees him a shot at all those titles and the exact same amount of money or more to fight, whether it's Devin Haney or Devin Haney, whoever beats Devin Haney down the line. Yeah, and that's going to be hard to get because now, the ball is on Devin Haney's court. But yeah, I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:10:57 If Cambosos can get that fighting in Australia, get their TV rights, get everything on their side of the country of the world for the money, strictly for the money. Devin Haney's going to go down there again because he didn't go down there for the money the first time around. He got the short end of the stick.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Now he's the man, he's the champ, he has all the belts. He could swing that stick around and say demand a little bit more money. And I'm pretty sure he'll travel exactly, he'll do the exact same thing and go down there just for the money and to say, listen, man, I just want to get past this fight. I want to get past my contractual obligation.
Starting point is 00:11:28 I'll go back to the States and do what I've got to do with the other lightweight kings because lightweight's a loaded division. It is a loaded division. I hope Devin Haney does do the rematch and does it quietly without a lot of complaint because, look, he did agree to it. And if you're going to – I hate rematch clauses, Mannix. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:45 They are ruining, boxing and undisputed boxing. We would have an undisputed heavyweight champion if it wasn't for a damn rematch clause. We will have a lot of champions if it wasn't for rematch clauses. You would have fought Oscar Delahoeia if not a rematch clause. I would have fought Oscar Delahoeia if it wasn't for a rematch clause. I'm telling you, a lot of money gets left on table. A lot of history gets left behind.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Yeah, but you say that. But if you had the power to, you know, implement a rematch clause, you would put one in too. Like, if you had the, if you could have fought Delahoya and inserted a rematch clause in that contract, you would have done it. I hear you. And George, George has not made a lot of money in his career. He made a lot of money against Deafimo, but this was a way to set him and his family up for the rest of their lives.
Starting point is 00:12:22 All right. Well, then rematch clauses should have a clause in it saying that if the fight doesn't sell, if it was a one-sided fight, if no one wants to see it, if the numbers aren't there, then the fighter can move on and have another fight in between. But just to have a demanded rematch clause, just doesn't seem fair to the fans, the sport, and anyone watching. I mean, look, I would guess that ESPN is probably not clamoring to do the rematch, even though they did a really good number on ESPN for that fight. The first time. I'm like, it'll be like Fury Wilder. Their first one did great numbers.
Starting point is 00:12:56 The second one didn't sell as much. It'll be an exact same thing. Well, no. The Fury Wild and the second one did really well? Not as good as the first one. I'm trying to remember. No, the first one killed it. It was like double the numbers.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Was it? I think you might be wrong with them, but I'm blanking. Look, I don't think there's any way George wins that rematch, but unless he can get dollar for dollar value and a guarantee that whether it's Lomachenko, Tank Davis, whoever fights him. he's got to step up and take that fight. It's probably going to be the exact same thing,
Starting point is 00:13:23 and that might be the very end we see of George Cambosis at a top level, but this is his chance to cash a check. And then when it's over, you know, in 2023, Devin Haney can either look to the top guys at 135 and say, I've got all the belts come and get it, or he can move up to 140, where Teifima Lopez might be waiting for him. Now that Haney's with top rank, he's got a chance to make that fight happen. Regis Progray, a good fight at 140 pounds.
Starting point is 00:13:45 So a lot of good options out there for Devin Haney early in next year. All right, a fight that happened midweek, which we don't often see. Tuesday. Tuesday. I love it. Tuesday morning, eastern time, early morning, Pacific time. Noyoa Inouye on his home turf in a rematch with Donito Donair. Just flattened Donair.
Starting point is 00:14:08 Knocked him down in the first round, knocked him out in the second round. Sergio, the first fight between these two guys was a clear win by Inouye, but it was a war. Inouye had his face. broken in that fight. So you had to anticipate Donair and Inouye the second time around would be an excellent fight, but Inouye showed that not only is he one of the best pound for pound fighters in boxing, he is a heavy, heavy hitter. Donair said after that fight, he had never been hit as hard as he was by Noah in a way.
Starting point is 00:14:40 This is a guy that's moved up a couple of weight classes during his time in boxing. What did you think of in a way stopping Donair in the second round? Donair is one of my favorite fighters And I always like to say Donair is your favorite fighter's favorite fighter Because he's an amazing, amazing boxer puncher That left hook is textbook What he's been able to do in four divisions
Starting point is 00:15:02 Win championships And at almost 40 years old Still be fighting the pound for pound What second or third best fighter in the world I mean I think this performance puts him In number two pound for pound on my list At least The monster is a beast
Starting point is 00:15:15 And he's exciting to watch And the way he unleashes those punches, it's funny because he has textbook power where he doesn't load up the power from exactly where he's throwing it to the target. He lets it real loose, kind of like Bruce Lee. As soon as he's going to hit the target, he clenches his fist, and that's why it pops. It's kind of like a bamboo stick, and it's a beautiful thing to watch, and he does it with the left and the right hand from the South Paul stands and with fast feet and with the angles and its knockout power.
Starting point is 00:15:42 And for him to do that to a great fighter like Donair, one of the greatest fighters in the last 20 years, in my opinion, the way he did it, incredible. And that's the reason he shot up the list. That's the reason everybody's going to watch him. And American fans got a glimpse of what this monster can do on TV. So a couple follow-ups on that. Inouye was widely regarded as a top five pound-for-pound guy going into that fight. Where would you pencil him in right now?
Starting point is 00:16:09 You put him number two on your list. Bud Crawford, Monster, Inouye. See, I still have Canello at number two. I'm not going to punish Canello. That was number three on my book now. So you have Crawford, Inouye, Canello is your top three. So I put Inouye at three. I keep Canello with two and I move Usek down a spot because Usick hasn't fought in a little while.
Starting point is 00:16:28 What else does Inouye have to do to get closer and closer to number one? I mean, I think we just seen it. You know, you're not wrong there. You're not wrong there. His resume keeps getting better and better. His resume is amazing. He beats the best at their best. He's beaten Donair twice now and once by crushing knockout.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I don't know if Paul Butler is going to go anywhere near him. if he does, that feels like Charles Martin, Anthony Joshua to me, where it's like Paul Butler takes his title into Japan for the fight and then just get stomped. It just, at 118, this guy is to borrow his tagline a monster. Like, you cannot go the distance with this guy. He is too heavy-handed at 118. And, you know, fighters at that weight division don't last that long, but what, he's 28, no, 29 years old. He still hasn't even hit his 30s.
Starting point is 00:17:12 These are fighters that still fight until they're 30s, you know, 33, 30s. you know, 33, 34 years old, we might be seen the peak of what he can do. And it's scary. It's violent. I want more. It's like with Canelo. You saw him peak at like 29, 30, 31 now. Like you're just seeing the prime years of Inouye.
Starting point is 00:17:28 So I'd like to see him do Paul Butler if he can make that fight happen to become undisputed. If not, I don't know if it's doable, Sergio, but wouldn't you want to see Inouye and go down and wait? No, no. No, no. Go down and away. No. I want to see him against Estrada.
Starting point is 00:17:42 No, no, no, he'd kill those guys. That's what I want to see. No, no, he would ask you. You're asking me. I'm the interviewer. Yeah, but he can't. Inouye's not making lower weights. He's not going down to 115.
Starting point is 00:17:50 He's going up if he's going anywhere. And him and Stephen Fulton's a great fight. Fulton beat Danny Roman, convincingly. That's a great fight where they're at in their career is a great fight, but it's not a marketable fight. It's not a pay-per-view fight. You can sell Chocolatito Mancer.
Starting point is 00:18:03 You can sell Estrada against Inouye. You can sell him against Fulton. Fulton is probably the harder, more difficult, scarier fight, but I'm talking about numbers. I'm talking about gross and numbers here. Look, with all due respect. perspective Chocolatito, who's an all-time legend, Inouye puts him in a box.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Like, that is a bad, bad matchup for Chocolatito. In a way is too strong. And if he can make $1.15 in a healthy way, he is going to hurt Chocolatito. Because Chocolatito only knows one way to fight. Like, he doesn't well, but he comes at you. He throws punches. He engages. You engage with In a way.
Starting point is 00:18:32 It's an early night for you. I mean, come on. Let's be real. In a box. In fact, Sergio, to that point, I don't know what you do if you're Donair. You're 39 years old. But even though you just got knocked out,
Starting point is 00:18:43 Donair's still the second best 118 in the world No, no, no man See, I've known Donair Since the amateurs I know Him and his brother were Great Amateurs
Starting point is 00:18:52 Glenn Donair I think his name was Yeah These guys looked like Like college students Back then with With glasses on They would walk around
Starting point is 00:18:59 No one No one They weren't intimidating We didn't care for him They got in the ring They were beating everybody And they're still doing it While he's still doing it now
Starting point is 00:19:06 That's it man He's been doing it You think he should be done That's it man That's the last I think this is the last That we're gonna see Of Doner
Starting point is 00:19:12 I don't think he comes back because he's too smart. He's had an amazing Hall of Fame career. He's one of the greatest, not best, one of the greatest fighters in the last 20 years, and there's nothing else to prove. I think he goes up to the sunset and he's done everything he can possibly do and applaud him. Nothing else to prove. You're right. First ballot Hall of Fame are absolutely. But you mentioned Chocolatito. If Chocolatito faces Estrada sometime in the fall, and that seems to be the way things are trending right now. If Chocolatito wins that fight, I would love to see Chocolatito and Donaire. I would love to see that fight.
Starting point is 00:19:44 I would love to see it too, but we're not going to see two great fighters at their best, two four division champions at their best. We're going to see them at the tail end of their career. It'll still sell, but it's not. Hey, Mayweather Pachia was tail end of their careers. And what happened there? It was a dud. Don't get me wrong.
Starting point is 00:19:57 But there was a lot of buzz going into it. That's for sure. Yeah, there's a lot of buzz with the Dornier and Chocolatito. Hey, listen, you're thinking like a businessman. I'm thinking like a boxer. But that's a good fight too because Donaire still has the power if he makes weight at 115. And Chocolatito has the activity at that weight class. Like that is a tremendous fight on paper.
Starting point is 00:20:13 I don't think that would miss. I really don't. I don't know how it would end. You know, if Donair is right, he probably can stop Chocolatito, but Chocolatito throwing a thousand punches in a fight, oh, sign me up for that. Yeah, sign me up too, but I'll do it. I'll do it begrudgingly because Chocolatito,
Starting point is 00:20:29 we know where he's at now, and we've got to take care of our legends. And he came up from, you know, 106, 108. No, it's not a fair fight. That'll still be fun. All right. Let's look ahead to this weekend, specifically, We'll start out in New York. Edgar Berlanga is back in action this time against Romer Angulo. The Shine Sergio has come off Berlanga a little bit over the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:20:50 He was a widely acclaimed prospect going back to 2020. He was prospect of the year by many outlets, including Sports Illustrated. But over the last couple of years, DeMond Nicholson, you had, what was it, Marcelo? I'm blanking his last name. Cossaris. Cossaris, right. Cossaris, who not. He knocked him down in that fight.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Steve Rolls. He has gone the distance three straight times. He has suffered injuries in a couple of those fights. And now he's kind of at a crossroads here. He's still a young guy. But this fight against Angulo, I think, is a pretty important one for his career. Angulo's not bad. Like, he hasn't won a championship yet,
Starting point is 00:21:30 but he went the distance with Gilberto Ramirez at 168. He went 10 rounds with David Benavides, which is not easy to do because Benavides is a beast at that weight class. This to me will tell me a lot about where Edgar Berlanga is. What do you think? Look, man, anytime a fighter starts fighting better opposition, the knockouts are going to stop any puncher. That's just the way it is.
Starting point is 00:21:52 And you said it. I mean, Cosares got stopped, what, in the 11th round by a champion? Steve Rolls got stopped by the champion in Golofkin. Nicholson, Benevitas, these are champions, so it's not like he's... Nicholson is not a champion. He's a high-end champion. He only lost to a champion. still not a champion.
Starting point is 00:22:12 He's championship material. If he only lost to a champion in my book. Yeah, you've got to win. Championship material. And Berlanga, yeah, the itch is there to give him knockout. It's not that he doesn't have it. He has boxing ability. He actually is more than a puncher in my book.
Starting point is 00:22:27 It's just when you're that young, you know, you have to mature in the ring. And I think he's maturing in front of our eyes. It was just a little bit too fast. You know, he was in front of, you know, his home crowd and the Puerto Ricans. And he wants to impress in New York. and he's knocking everybody out. No, slow down, Tiger. He got a reality check.
Starting point is 00:22:45 I think now he's going to face a veteran that's had championship material. And he'll be able to stop. I think he'll be able to stop this one because he's already been there. Yeah, but that was already, that was a couple of years ago. Yeah, but Angulo beat Anthony Sims a couple of fights ago. So he's got, look, I think, I don't know that Angulo beats him by decision, but Angulo can absolutely go the distance against him. And Berlanga, I still don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Like, do you believe? Berlanga had 16 straight fights where he won. won by first-round knockout. He's now at three straight where he's gone the decision. Which fighter is he? Is he the fighter that showed great power early his career? Or is this more the guy, someone who may have to outbox opponents more than he has that fearsome power? No, he has the power.
Starting point is 00:23:24 It's just sometimes he has to be forced to go into the distance. Like when the Sims fight, I mean, that was an upset somewhat. Sims felt his power, so he was forced to not engage. I'd say Gulo you're talking about now. I'm talking about Burlanga. Burlanga. I'm like, is Berlanga a power? Is he this fearsome power puncher that he looked like early on?
Starting point is 00:23:39 Or is he more the guy we've seen these last. three fights. Oh, yeah, that's a good question. We need to find out because you're right. No, you're right, because he had to at least get the respect or hurt one of these last three opponents. And he kind of, you know, he kind of was lost in between his style there. So I think he has a little bit more boxer than puncher. What do you think as a fighter when you see a guy that's dealt with the kind of upper body injuries that Berlang has dealt with? He had, what, the torn bicep after the win over Casares? I think his last fight he had another some kind of of injuries. Is that like a warning sign when you have so many kind of injuries this early
Starting point is 00:24:13 your career? No, no, he's 25 years old, I believe. And no, I don't think that's enough. It's just, you know, he trains hard every single time. I'm pretty sure that every time he punches a bag or a speed bag or hitting the myth, he punches with a 100% power. He's just one of those guys. Once you get into the later stages of your career, you realize you don't need to punch that hard. You just need to punch right. You need the timing, turning your fist, keeping the technique there. You know, that's when you save your muscles, your bones and all that. Well, we'll see. I think this is a huge fight for Burlang.
Starting point is 00:24:46 If he looks great against Angulo, he's right back on that track. I mean, he's already a ticket seller in New York. This will be, what, his second straight fight at MSG, maybe third fight MSG. Yeah, I think it's third. So he's got the fan support behind him there. But he's got to show he's a legitimate prospect or a legitimate contender at this point. He was a great prospect, but he's not shown he's a contend. No, no, no, he reminds me of Curtis Stevenson.
Starting point is 00:25:11 He was just at that cusp. He had everybody interested in that power, you know, knocking everybody out. He was, you know, from New York. He had that Irvin backing and the hip-hop crowd. He had rappers coming out, and then he got clipped and knocked out. No one heard of him. Berlanga is kind of almost going on that crossroads. But people forget right away with knockouts.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Well, yeah, I mean, you mentioned Curtis Stevens. Like, he got his shot, his big shot against Golofkin. He got stopped. He got another decent shot against David Lemieux. He got stopped. So, you know, I mean, yeah, this will see. Look, again, I don't think Angulo stops Burlanga, but I think it's an important fight for Burlanga to look great.
Starting point is 00:25:46 If he looks great, you can start talking about doing fights against, I don't know, Shane Mosley Jr. If he wants that kind of matchup, I think Gabe Rosadoe's probably retired, but that's a fight that fight that they had talked about before. I don't like that fight either. I think Gabe should be done, but that's a separate conversation all together. People have fickle minds, one knockout, he's back. I agree.
Starting point is 00:26:03 I agree. I think you can shake it off with just one knockup. It's a big fight coming up for him this weekend. The fight that we are at this. this weekend, Sergio. Jaime Mungia, back against Jimmy Kelly. This fight is being fought at a catchweight between 160 and 168. Mungia has now fought six times.
Starting point is 00:26:19 This will be a sixth fight since vacating his title at 154 and moving up in weight. None of the fights have been especially consequential. Probably the most notable fight was his win over Gabe Rosado. And, you know, Rosado was on the back end of his career and was never championship level as it was. Jimmy Kelly, let's be real. Jimmy Kelly is a stay-bizzy type of fight. I'm willing in some ways
Starting point is 00:26:46 to give Jaime Mungia a little bit of a pass because, look, they had a deal in place to face Jermal Charlo. That fight was scuttled after networks kind of got involved and it became a mess in that respect. They negotiated in good faith with Daniel Jacobs.
Starting point is 00:27:03 That fight fell apart because Jacobs wanted too much money. And, as you know, Mosley Jr. They had a deal with Shane Mosley Jr. before Shane came back at the equivalent of the 11th hour and asked for more money and more time. And Golden Boy, understandably, was not willing to let them do this. They wanted to keep the date. They wanted to keep Mungia busy.
Starting point is 00:27:20 And here he is fighting Jimmy Kelly. Jimmy Kelly, his biggest fight to date, he was stopped by Liam Smith at 154. I'll be honest, I don't have, I don't see a lot of paths to victory for Jimmy Kelly in a fight like this. So I'm not even going to ask you specifically about this fight. but is it time for Jaime Mugia? It's been time. Okay. I'm just waiting for you to finish.
Starting point is 00:27:41 It's been time. I'm setting it up here. I know you are, but it's been time. I think if you're a fan and the fans don't know what you know, so they don't know the negotiations that fell apart with Daniel Jacobs and Shane Moseley. Okay, but only 100,000 people listen to your podcast, maybe 150 now that I'm here, but. That's wonderful. Okay.
Starting point is 00:27:59 But I'm talking about the millions of people with the millions of people that actually are watching Mungiia. If you look at his resume, they're looking at, they're looking at Gabriel's Idol. Yeah, a blood and guts warrior, not a champion material. Look at way back to how he won the world title, Saddamo Lee. Then he defends against in a way. He defends against Hogan, a fight. He should have lost. We called that fight in Tijuana, Mexico, should have lost that fight.
Starting point is 00:28:24 On and on. I mean, Tariano Johnson, tough guy, gatekeeper, not enough. Spicholitan, tough guy, gatekeeper, not enough. Hyman Mungia is an undefeated, unblemished champion. 25 years old in this prime. He should be fighting someone of equal level. We're tired of it. Oscar Del Hoya told us the exact same thing in his last fight.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Charlo, we want you. Demetrius Andre, I want you. Don't get me on Andrade. No, listen, but I asked him. I said, are you serious, Oscar? Are you serious about this? Yes, I'm serious. That's who's next.
Starting point is 00:28:53 We get Jimmy Kelly. He does not want Demetrius Andrade. You and I both know he could have had Demetrius Andrade any time over the last two years. No, but he doesn't want it. And look, you keep mentioning Oscar Valhoia. To me, this is on Jaime Mungia. Hyman Mungi has to demand these fights. I am so sick and tired.
Starting point is 00:29:07 It's never on the fighter, man. He's always on the fighter. Fernando Beltran. He has managers. He has advisors. He has lawyers. None of them fights. But they all are in his pocket, in his ear.
Starting point is 00:29:19 He pays these fighters to do the talking for him. Oscar Deloia is the face of Golden Boy promotions. He's the one that can push this fight. Mungia, these are the names that we have in front of you on this date. You want them? Yes or no. I're also going to have to wait six months, eight months. That's the way fights get made.
Starting point is 00:29:34 That's the way they do it with other fighters. You think if Mungia had said at any point in the last couple of years, bring me Demetrius Andrea and nothing else, they wouldn't have made the fight? Of course they would have made the fight. Yes. So this is my point. Why were they not pushing?
Starting point is 00:29:48 Why was Jaime Mungia not pushing for Demetrius Andrade? By the way, Jaime Mungia might beat Demetrius Andrade. Why would you push for Bubu Andrade? Because he's a middleweight champion. Who would make you look terrible? Oh, give me a break. A 6'1 South Paul. Oh, big deal.
Starting point is 00:30:02 What? So nobody should fight a 6 foot one side? El Pas ever again? It didn't have to? He's got a world championship. He would have made millions to do that fight. That's why Andrade is so avoided because he's everything that you don't want. Mungia would have, I think he might have won that fight.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Maybe. That would have been a coin flip fight. Mungia right now is really good. He's active. He throws a lot of punches. He's powerful. He's got a really good chin. He's getting better under Eric Morales.
Starting point is 00:30:23 It's not like he gets embarrassed by Demetrius Andrade guaranteed if he fights him. I mean, get out of here. Like, Demetri's, a loss to Demetreus Andrade does more for Jaime Mungia than a win over Gabe Rosado over Demetrius Ballard, which was a joke, and Jimmy Kelly, however, this all fight plays out on Saturday. It's ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Take the big fight and push for the big fight. It's on the fighter. You were a fighter. You were in the ring. You're telling me, like, you didn't do what you wanted to do? Like, you're the one out there taking the punches. Yes, I did, and people hated me for it. Every promoter hated me for it because I didn't have a lawyer speaking for me.
Starting point is 00:30:59 I didn't have anyone speaking for me. I dealt with the promoter one-on-one. I actually did the contract by myself. If you had somebody speaking for you, I thought Jermaine Taylor back in the day. I was going to bring that up. I've turned down high six-figure paydays and undisputed championships and big fights
Starting point is 00:31:18 because they weren't the right fights. I turned down Sergio Martinez. I turned down Sergio Martinez. I turned down Erzani, Lara. You would have beaten Germant Taylor. Why did I turn down Martinez and Lara? Because they're both slick Southpaws. No one wants to fight a slick Southpaw.
Starting point is 00:31:32 What you turned down Jamantella for? $850,000. Lou DeBella can vouch on that. I wanted one million. Lou, give me $150 more and we got it. He said, nope. Deals off the table. Look, like I said, the top of this,
Starting point is 00:31:44 I'm willing to give Jaime Mugia something of a pass for this fight because all the things that went into it. But after this, Sergio, it's over. You said this last fight, Mannix. I don't know. I don't know why you're backing them up now. I'm not backing him up at all.
Starting point is 00:32:00 I'm saying the same thing about Jaime Mungia that I said about tanked. David. Jaime Mungia has proven he is something of an attraction. He does decent ticket sales. He does decent ratings on television and on streaming, but he has not proven himself at the highest level. He could go 40 and O with this win over Jimmy Kelly,
Starting point is 00:32:18 and it's meaningless unless you have guys on the resume to back it up. Tank Davis felt the same way about it. Said that about Tank Davis. I'm saying the same thing about Jaime Mungia. You need to test yourself against the best. I'll give you that. You've been a solid. even solid on both those fronts.
Starting point is 00:32:35 I mean, you've been a heavy critic of Tank Davis, and you're starting to be a heavy critic with Mungia, but Mungia deserves it. Tank Davis, he fills out arenas in different places. So if you're as a promoter and his manager and the network, you love the fact that he's filling out 15, 20,000 seats in every city, in Atlanta, in New York, everywhere he goes. He's an attraction.
Starting point is 00:32:55 Attraction. So you're building an attraction against, you know, non-champions, and you're doing the job right. But as a fighter, as a fan, yeah, disappointing. You can, look, you can fill out arenas and make money, and if that's all you want out of your career, that's fine. But do not ask for respect unless you face top guys. And that's why he's not on your or my pound for pound 10 list because of that reason.
Starting point is 00:33:17 He's not, yes, because he hasn't faced top guys. That's it. Number 11, maybe. He's number 11 or 12, but he's not 10. No, he's not 11 or 12. He's probably teen somewhere. But it's because of his resume and resumes matter. Resumies do matter.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Absolutely. Speaking of which, Ryan Garcia, very focal. right nowadays about Tank Davis. You like that fight for both those guys before the end of the year? I don't know. Right now, Ryan Garcia is maybe doing too much barking, not enough biting. I'll be honest, and I love Garcia. I think he's a superstar in the making.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Once he gets that championship strap and gets solidified, people will shut up. Right now they're seeing a pretty face with a big mouth and a big punch. I love that. I love that, by the way, but a lot of fans hate that. It's just like they hated the golden boy, Oscar Delahoya. They hated a pretty boy with a pretty left hook. That was knocking people out and, you know, people love them, fans love them, women love them. He was on the cover of magazines.
Starting point is 00:34:12 That's what people hate. That's what sells. But as long as he comes back, puts butts in seats and gets the knockouts, that's all that matters. In the last fight, Garcia turned out more than a pretty face. Oscar was way more than a pretty face. Garcia wasn't able to get the knock on his last fight. All right, come back and do it. That guy didn't come to fight.
Starting point is 00:34:29 No, he didn't come to fight. Yeah. And I think this time around, Fortuna is going to come to fight. Believe me. Fortuna's a legit former champion, legit. He didn't look great against Jojo last year. Yeah, because Jojo's a legit former champion himself. South Paul.
Starting point is 00:34:42 South Pauls hate fighting each other. And Jojo's on a mean streak as well. I want to see Jojo against Garcia, by the way. That's another fight I would love to see. It's not a bad fight. It's certainly a more makeable fight than Tank and Ryan Garcia. But look, for Tank, you need a big name on your resume. Ryan Garcia is a big name.
Starting point is 00:34:59 For Ryan Garcia, you need someone like Tank Davis to prove that you are more, like you said, just the pretty face right now. They both need each other. They really do. Whether Leonard L.A.B. and Mayweather Promotions believes it. Whether Golden Boy believes it, they both need each other badly before the end of the year. And Devin Haney and George Cambosis are spoken for the lightweight division, Vasily Lomachenko, still in the Ukraine until further notice. There is no other fight out there for either one of those guys that matches what would be if they fought each other. It's as simple as that.
Starting point is 00:35:29 All right, last thing for you, because I want to get your take on this. I discussed with Ak and Barack a little bit last week, but Anthony Joshua, bringing on Robert Garcia to his team. Do you? All right. So I'll just tell you, you know my take on this, but to repeat it, I'm a little concerned at the timing of it. I think Robert Garcia is an excellent trainer, but to bring him in roughly two months before you are scheduled to face Alex and Ousek in the biggest fight of your professional career,
Starting point is 00:35:57 this is after you had announced effectively that Angel Fernandez was going to be your head trainer. I wonder about that, Sergio. It feels like there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen right now with Anthony Joshua, and I don't know how, and you're someone that had one cook in the kitchen, but your entire career, you know what it means. You know the positive impact of having one voice speak to you during these times? I wonder if there's too many voices now with Anthony Joshua. I had one master's chef in my corner, and that's why I never got rid of him.
Starting point is 00:36:26 Shout out Dean Campos. But, you know, when Anthony Joshua was making his world tour looking for a trainer, we talked about this. It was a topic on jabs, and I picked Robert Garcia, if you remember. You know, he was going to Texas and train with Ronnie Shields, and a great train who's been with some great heavyweight champions. He went up Northern California, Virgil Hunter, Andre Ward's trainer. That fit, I didn't like it because it was going to be a little bit too cerebral.
Starting point is 00:36:52 Both fighters are really smart and he needs someone to dig down. He needs to get physical. He needs body shots. He needs Mexican-style manic. That's what the British former heavyweight champion needs. Mexican style in his life. Someone's going to push it but be smart about it. Cut off the ring.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Know how to step back. Use strategy all the way to the end. And then if you're falling behind, throw caution of the wind, and get down and dirty, be able to just punch anything physical. That's a big man right there. You've got to make it a big man fight. And Robert Garcia will be able to bring all that to the table. Can you do that in one training camp? Can you do that in one training camp?
Starting point is 00:37:28 Probably not. Okay. So that's the problem. And Anthony Joshua is not testing out these new techniques in front of some nobody. He's testing it out. It's the top five pound for pound talent. And that's why we're nervous. And that's why it reeks of desperation.
Starting point is 00:37:39 And it's freaking that version. Now you sound like me. It's what I said on Jabs. Well, I'm kind of, you know, pirating me there a little bit. I'm picking up some words, some, some, Picking up my wisdom. Vernacular.
Starting point is 00:37:50 Wisdom, I call it. Vernacular. It's not vernacular. It's wisdom. It's my pearls of wisdom that I've been dropping on you. I think it's risky. No question about it. And like, I don't even know who's the lead voices.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Like, Angel Fernandez has a Cuban background. Like his training methods came from his time training in Cuba. Robert Garcia is the opposite of that. Robert Garcia's fighters, generally speaking, you know, outside of like Mikey Garcia, are all offense all the time. Virgil Ortiz, offensive-oriented fighter. Jose Ramirez, offensive-oriented fighter.
Starting point is 00:38:18 He's got a lot of offensive-oriented guys in his camp, and I just wonder how that's all going to work when it's all team together. And like, if you're in, if you get down on the cards to Ucic, like, you know, what's the adjustment going to be? He's going to kind of go bull in the China shop and try to knock the guy out. That's not going to work against the guy's skilled as Ucic.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Garcia also had boxers in his camp. He does. Tanahara was in his camp. No question. And Mikey Garcia is one of the best boxers. And Mikey Garcia, when he went up in weight, the power wasn't enough. He had to rely on tech. Highly skilled guy.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Highly skilled guy. I'm sorry? He's a highly skilled guy, Mikey Garcia. He's a great. Yeah. Absolutely. He needs to get back at the ring, too, but that's a conversation for another day. All right, will you go get changed?
Starting point is 00:38:58 We've got a baseball game to go to. Anaheim Angels, baby. Anaheim. Who's pitching? Shahoei. What is it? Otani. How does he say his first name?
Starting point is 00:39:04 I forgot. He's a bucketless thing. Let's go watch greatness, Madix. Not watching you. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:39:42 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement

Starting point is 00:40:42 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:41:02 and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:41:25 Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, it's time now for this week's picks brought to you by Fandul,
Starting point is 00:41:46 and I hope you bet big on what I told you last week. Devin Haney, by decision, those were my picks. What happened? Devin Haney went to Australia and won by decision. Devin was just too skilled in that matchup, and as good as he is, he was not going to stop George Cambosis in that type of fight. Devin just doesn't have that kind of one-punch power, But winning a decision, that was an easy call, easy pick to make.
Starting point is 00:42:12 I hope you bet big on that one. Hope you bet big on this one this week. I've got Edgar Berlanga against Romer Angulo in a 168-pound matchup. It's a fight you can watch on ESPN. Right now, according to Fandul Burlanga, is at minus 280. So he's the favorite in this fight. But I like him to win this fight. I like him to win a lot because Angulo, while he has been in with good competition,
Starting point is 00:42:38 He has faced. Gilberto Ramirez lost a decision. He has faced David Benavides went 10 rounds with Benavides before getting stopped. I think Berlanga is the more talented fighter, the fresher fighter. I think he wins that fight.
Starting point is 00:42:54 Now, how does he win? Berlanga's a knockout artist. Got 16 knockouts on his resume, 19 career wins. Burlanga by points is plus 125. Not the greatest of odds in the world, but I think that is the most likely outcome in this situation.
Starting point is 00:43:10 Berlanga has won three straight fights by decision. He has not showcased the kind of knockout power we saw early in his career. In Angulo, he has been in with tough guys, and he is a tough guy. So I think he goes the distance against Angulo, or against Berlanga, rather, tries to survive late in the fight and comes away on the wrong side of a decision. So this week's picks, Edgar Berlangut to win, Edgar Berlangut to win by decision.
Starting point is 00:43:35 Those are my picks brought to you by Fandul. That's it for this week's episode. My thanks to Sergio Mora for joining the show. As always, subscribe, rate, review this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, wherever you download podcast. And the last word about Sergio, I will give to you, Ryan Garcia. Sergio, you don't know shit. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
Starting point is 00:43:59 Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest. S&L's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:44:19 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast is. Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:44:43 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
