Hello, boys and girls.
Welcome in to the Boys and Girl podcast with Cowboys NFL Network reporter Jane Slater
and NFL network producer Bobby Belt.
A Cowboys community with the inside scoop on the Dallas Cowboys.
Now, coming straight to you from the Lone Star State, here's Jane and Bobby.
Well, the world has changed so much for so many people, Bobby,
since we last recorded this podcast.
In fact, what a wild week it's been, unless you're living under Iraq,
you know, that we are fighting a pandemic out there, a coronavirus outbreak.
and I have been no stranger to my home living room.
As I know you have, Bobby, what's it been like in your house?
It's been definitely quiet here because I don't have children and I am just party of one here in Dallas.
You've got a couple of kids.
What's it been like at home?
Yeah, I got three kids.
And so this week was already, we were anticipating kind of having to be in close quarters with each other already because they were on spring break this week,
which is about a week later than the rest of the year.
FW.
But yeah, it's been a little bit of an adjustment and they're, you know, they're losing
their minds like children are apt to do, not from being pent up, just, you know, they want
to run around and they want to scream and it's not always normal to have that in the house.
And so that's been the challenge for me has just been, oh my gosh, I may be preparing for
several weeks of essentially spring break all indoors.
So that's, that's been a joy.
But we're getting through it with lots of, you know, streaming platforms and Netflix
Benging and, you know, good old-fashioned board games and stuff.
You know, just practicing good habits as we attempt to fight through this,
just like the NFL is doing right now.
I'm going to tell you, it's been, you know, it's so weird.
My background was in news, and I remember working in Denver, Colorado,
when it was the advent of Twitter, right?
And they told us, when you've got stories that you're working on,
post them to Twitter, and being the competitive reporter that I was back then,
I thought it was incredulous that I'd let people know what I was.
working on and that I'd put stuff on Twitter.
And now Twitter is, it's so important to getting information out there,
you know, hopefully credible information because we've even seen just this week.
You know, we've got to be careful what we're seeing out there.
To be completely honest, when the Rudy Gobert stuff came out.
Oh, gosh, yeah.
I thought it was a hoax.
But I would say that was really the turning point for leagues around the country.
But, you know, we've got to stop down.
This thing is incredibly serious.
And things incredibly influx, even within the NFL, we didn't know if the league gear was going to start.
The CBA vote took place, obviously, late on Sunday.
And then it was decided that, you know, for the time being, there's going to be travel restrictions for upcoming free agency.
Players, in fact, aren't allowed to report to the facilities to work out for OTAs and things of that.
nature. My colleague, Judy Batista, reporting this week that one owner told her that players may not
actually have physical contact, be in the same room with players or coaches until the start
of training camp.
And we're talking the end of July in the case of the Cowboys.
And speaking of Cowboys training camp, of course, Mike McCarthy had told us the Combine
that he was going to go out and scout Ocknard and get a lay in the land.
And of course, that hasn't happened yet.
You know, a good question I haven't asked it yet.
I don't even know if Mike has moved down here to Dallas yet.
You know, he had his kids obviously in school in Green Bay.
And so I am curious to see if he's up there.
Of course, the Jones family has access to private jets.
So I'm sure they can get him back and forth.
But in talking to some of my cowboy sources, it has been a little bit of a challenge.
And let me preface this by saying it does feel weird that we're talking about.
the challenges of football players and football activities, right?
Sure.
You're dealing with such a pandemic that we can't really get our hands around.
I've been glued to the television, as I know you are.
We're both sort of news junkies, even outside of sports.
And it does feel weird.
But I do think that at least it's been a distraction,
and we hope this podcast can be a distraction for you.
So while as we weave in some of the world events that are going on right now,
Of course, we do want to deliver some Cowboys news, but of course, we want to be sensitive to the fact that, hey, there's something going on out there.
Yeah, yeah.
And it's not just been, as you mentioned, the impact on the Cowboys and things like that.
The NFL draft, which is a massive deal around this time, that that's going to be very much scaled back from what everybody's become accustomed to.
This isn't going to be the big public production with fans booing and cheering at each pick.
This is going to be something incredibly impacted by that, that there's no longer going to be a big draft event.
in Las Vegas. So lots of changes that are impacting, you know, not just how the league is functioning,
but how we kind of consume how the league is functioning.
And I've got so many questions, Bobby. And, you know, I've tried to get some answers on it.
And we're getting some clarity, but, you know, just how teams, you know, Dallas will do like a Dallas day,
which was where we found guys like Cole Beasley and Danny Amandola.
You know, obviously you had the training facilities around here, Michael Johnson,
performance, exos, things along those lines.
they're not holding workouts anymore.
In fact, gyms in my neighborhood aren't even open.
I don't even have access to the gym in my own building.
So how are these players going to be conditioned for training camp?
How are, in the case of the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy going to implement his new system
and introduce his players to coaches that some of them haven't even met yet?
It's so fascinating to me.
And so I did, I did reach out to somebody within the organization.
I said, you know, how is this thing going?
And, you know, I'll be honest, I got, it was a little bit of not distress, but they themselves
wrapping their hands around it.
It's a brave new world.
Right.
They're doing virtual interviews with their college prospects.
And college prospects, mind you, that haven't completed their testing.
Potential virtual draft meetings, putting together a virtual board.
And then not only that.
you've got people sitting in their living rooms hungry and thirsty for information.
And so football fans are, you know, we talk about the trolls in the basement.
They are out in mass right now.
Yeah.
With nothing better to do.
Right.
And so it is fascinating how this whole thing is going to shake out.
You know, as you said, how this draft is going to look.
You know, it is going back to my news background, I'll never forget I was covering the Democratic National Convention.
and I had a boss say, okay, we're going to do live shot from within the arena there in Denver, the taxi center.
And I said, how?
I mean, we use live trucks.
You know, imagine like this, you know, this big dish that goes up and we have satellite trucks.
And, of course, we have the live trucks.
How?
Well, we've got these go-tacks where, you know, we can now stream you live from wherever you're at.
Yep.
So that was wild to me, right?
But now we were able to do free agency.
I don't know if you caught me on Skype and FaceTime and you caught my colleagues.
We were able to have full-blown newscast and get you information from our homes.
Yeah.
That, I got to tell you, like I said, I've been doing this since 2003.
The fact that we're able to do full-on broadcast like that, I mean, I don't know if you saw even the Today Show because they had a staffer that had tested positive.
if, you know, one of the anchors was broadcasting from our basement.
Right.
It is just fascinating that, you know, we're all sort of glued to our television sets and especially radio.
You and I were talking about that today, Bobby, you work.
A lot of people may not know what your side hustle is actually your main job.
This is the side hustle.
Yes, it is.
A little bit about what you're doing.
Well, actually, we, yeah, we here at work, they've kind of transitioned.
I work in radio mainly.
And they've kind of transitioned over to essential personnel, basically, being in the building.
and we're doing a lot of different things right now.
One of the things they just decided today is they're going to start rotating out people.
So people who are essential personnel, each day one of them is going to be off and at home.
And they're not going to lose time.
They're still going to get paid for it.
And it's not going to be sick time.
But they're just trying to kind of give people time away from the building and break this up as best they can.
But it is funny.
We got one of these little basically got these documents today from actually the Department
of Homeland Security. And it's a, it's a declaration of national emergency. But it's basically a sheet that just says,
hey, if they live in an area that is under lockdown right now, this is a sheet declaring that they are
essential personnel or they need to be working. And so if they're pulled over for breaking curfew or
whatever, this person needs to head to work. So it is a wild time to be living in. And it's,
you know, it's more, I know everybody compared it to post 9-11. Some of the stuff that's
happened last week. This is to me even radically more different than what we experienced after 9-11.
And, you know, I do think that for as much as there was maybe some controversy about whether or not
the league year should start, I do think it was a good break that people could have to kind of
break their attention away from some of the doom and gloom.
Okay, Bobby, but let's also break down the fact that we really don't know what the next
couple of months are going to look like. And as I was explaining earlier, how would it
going to even, here's my other question.
You know, there's talk of, you know, baseball coming back up, basketball coming back up,
hockey coming back up.
All of them have exclusive TV rights.
How is that going to factor in with football?
I mean, I think we can look at the numbers if football skiing.
It seems like, you know, football wins.
Is this when we start seeing the landscape change?
In other words, you know, places like, I know, you and I subscribe to Fubo TV.
Yep.
Does Fubo TV creates, is this a new one?
marketplace for these companies, these platforms where you can stream now these games.
The whole thing's going to be fascinating to me.
And then, you know, again, when we start, does that affect contracts anyway?
The CBA, I would imagine, protects the players in the sense that, you know,
if here's your contract, whether you guys are playing or not, we've got to pay you.
Yeah.
Well, and I wonder, I wonder one of the fallouts that I'm wondering about is when this does pass.
And, I mean, everybody agrees that we don't know what,
kind of timetable, but I mean, this is going to pass
and we're going to get back to some sense of normalcy
at some point. It's just debate of when
that'll be. But, you know, when this passes and the NFL
does kick back up again,
you know, like you mentioned, that they're not able
to be in these facilities and get the workouts there. Are we going to
see potentially a lot more
injuries next season? Because guys hadn't
been able to get in the conditioning that they wanted to.
And, you know, the fallout from
Combine. A lot of guys felt like their
combine times weren't as good as they could have been
because of kind of the change in schedule.
And we're hoping Pro Days would improve that. Well,
pro days aren't happening now. So how does that affect stock for certain guys? And, you know, I know we mentioned that, uh, you know, a lot of these, you know, these draft training facilities are having to shut down. Um, but I know test football academy in the Northeast, they just had a pro day recently this week where they did things on their own isolated and then are submitting times to teams and I believe a couple other facilities are planning similar sort of things where they can just kind of isolate themselves, get the numbers that they need to while still following all these CDC guidelines. And, and that they're going to, and
then be able to turn those over to teams. So it's,
it's a wild time to, to be in
right now. And, uh,
I'm sure for the teams themselves, too.
I mean, medicals are a big part of the draft process and free agency.
And if you can't get guys in there to take physicals and other things,
it's,
it presents a slew of complications. And,
and I wonder how it affects the market for some higher risk guys, uh, medically.
Perfect example. Des Bryant.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Right.
Looking at the side of the team.
If you're a team, are you not,
wanting to check the medicals on debt?
Exactly. Yeah, no, that is a big part of this.
And right now, if you were even interested in signing Desk,
you probably wouldn't pull the trigger on that right now
because you don't have the medicals to be able to ease those sorts of concerns.
And, you know, medical recheck was going to be a big deal,
I think, at the combine for a lot of guys, including, you know,
to attack of Iowa, does that impact him?
Does he now have issues in the draft?
Does Jordan Love raise above him?
So it presents all sorts of really,
intriguing issues and hurdles.
And as much as, like you said,
we've come so far technologically that we can do so much that we were limited by
in terms of reporting news and for teams,
they can do so much research and things that they probably wouldn't have been able to do
if this hit 20 years ago.
But there are still some things that require, you know,
face-to-face interaction and in-person research.
And they're just not able to get that done right now.
Especially with the limited padded practices, right?
Like, at the new CBA, if you're,
not having OTAs, you're not having mini-camp.
I just think the whole thing is fascinating.
And, you know, as you said, and if you talk to anybody in the league, I mean, they'll tell you things fluid.
It's fluid in everybody's job.
I mean, I'm sure you know various people in various industries.
And that's why it's still so off base to honestly talk about some of this stuff, Bobby,
about millionaires and their contracts.
And I get that it's a distraction.
but at the same time, I'm like, there are literally people that are going to come out of this in a few weeks and not have jobs.
Right.
And no amount of distraction is going to change that.
Right.
And, you know, I get it after September 11th.
I mean, I was in college when that happened.
I was literally a year from graduating.
I saw, you know, sort of how that disrupted things, how that affected the economy.
This feels different.
So it'll be very, very interesting.
And as you and I discussed, I mean, the tone in just a week and the approach to the thing has been so different.
But I know people, I know there's some people out there.
They tune into us, Bobby, because they don't want to hear us with our new things on something that they can't escape.
So let's give them a little bit of escape.
But I just felt like we'd be honest not to at least address it before we get into all the Cowboys News and content that we can deliver to you because I know there's a lot of interesting, interested fans.
Before we do jump at all of that, we do have a new partner here on the Boys and Girl Podcast.
podcast quip, Q-U-I-P.
You know, Jane, we talk here about social distancing and, you know, flattening the curve and all this stuff that we're hearing.
You know, we're all doing our best to practice good hygiene and good oral hygiene has to be a big part of that.
Jane and I both just ordered our quip electric toothbrushes and both so excited.
I went ahead with the silver, Jane.
That's the one that I went with.
It's a nice neutral tone that won't get me yelled at, I feel like, if it clashes with anything in the house that I'm
unaware of that my wife has designed or has in mind. So I went with the safe bet and the silver.
Which one did you decide to get it? You're such a smart man. I feel like Kristen and you have got a good
healthy relationship because you are a smart man, Bobby. I went with Rose Gold because everything
in my place is gold. So, you know, to your point, yes, as women, some of us women, we like to make
sure that everything is matchy, matchy. So, and you know, I've never been like a really big electric
tooth brush chick. You know, I buy
toothbrushes and I throw them out, you know, probably
every month, but my family has
all been a huge fan. So
interested to try this and sort of dive
in and, of course, we'll give you our thoughts on it.
Yeah, and KIPP makers of the KIPP electric
toothbrush, they want you to know the one single
discovery that matters most for your dental care.
It is simply this, that if you have
good habits, you're good to go.
So what are good habits? Let's look at a few. Good habits
include brushing for two minutes, twice
a day and flossing regularly, no matter
what brand you use. Quip makes
that's simple though. They start with an electric toothbrush,
refillable floss, an anti-cavity toothpaste. Quips electric toothbrush
has sensitive... It's great, yeah.
And Quip's electric toothbrush has sensitive sonic vibrations with a built-in time and 30-second
pulses to guide a full and even clean. The quip floss dispenser comes with pre-marked
string to help you use just enough. And I can't tell you just personally how much
I have wasted in terms of floss over the years just by... I pull out too much. I don't know
about you, Jane, but they've got you covered there at Quip with that.
And plus, Quip delivers fresh brushhead floss and toothpaste refills to your door every three
months with free shipping. So your routine is always right, even in a time of social distancing.
So here's how Quip is helping our listeners of the Boys and Girl podcast. If you go to getquip.com
slash boy girl right now, you'll get your first refill free. That's your first refill free at
get quip.com slash boy girl. Let me spell it out for you. G. E.T.Q.
UIP.com slash boy girl, whip the good habits company.
So, Jane, yeah, let's reset kind of where the Cowboys are at and the rest of the league here as free agency got underway this week.
Well, of course, the main course was Dak Prescott getting the franchise tag, the exclusive franchise tag on Monday right before that.
It came down like an hour before, right, buddy?
Yeah. Yeah.
Not entirely shocking, given the nature of the talks.
You know, we were at Combine, Stephen Jones told us that they tabled the talks in September
because both were sort of digging in to their position.
And we've talked about it all along.
The position hasn't so much for the money, obviously that's important,
but it's been the leak of the contract.
Cowboys, I've been told, have leaned more towards five, six years.
Doc wants the four years so that he can go out there
renegotiate another annual salary and guaranteed money here in four years when he thinks
that obviously he'll be at his peak and he has the potential of resetting the market again.
What if you think about the strategy?
Well, I was most interested in the fact that, as you said, not so much a surprise that
DAC was the one who got the franchise tag, but the DAC got the franchise tag and they
didn't have anything in place with Amari Cooper by the time free agency started.
and that was, I felt like a little bit of a risk.
But overall, I think that franchise tagging deck was the right move.
I do think it's a little funny and shows, I think, how short-sighted sometimes people can be on both sides and negotiations like this in that because you're starting from scratch, because this isn't an extension, you are going to have to, you know, basically start with whatever the contract is, that's the length of the contract.
It's not like Ezekiel Elliott when he gets a six-year extension,
and that's actually becomes an eight-year contract,
tacked onto his two years of his rookie deal.
So if Dak was asking for a four-year extension
and the Cowboys are wanting to have him locked in for five years,
I don't know why they just didn't, you know,
get the four-year extension done when he still had a year left on his rookie contract
and it becomes a five-year deal essentially.
But they, of course, I think, wanted to have some of their questions answered
about him heading into this final year of his rookie deal,
and I think he answered a lot of them with the way that he performed.
And so that's probably where they would stand on that in terms of why it didn't get done when it got done.
But it does feel like we're not splitting hairs probably isn't the right term,
but it does feel like they're quibbling over something that I feel like is not an impossible hurdle
to get done before the July 15th deadline.
So I do think that it's just a matter of time before Dax Steel gets done
and he's locked in here for the long term with the Cowboys.
Yeah, I agree with that.
And here's why, if they weren't completely all in on deck, they would have tacked on the other tag, right?
The cheaper tag that would allow them in Todd France to go out there, test the market.
And if the Cowboys were really not entirely sold, they would have gotten two first round picks for it.
Right.
They can do that.
Instead, they went with the more expensive one.
That, of course, is going to probably end up anywhere between $31.5 and $33 million is what I was told once in full thing shakes out.
and for people, I learned a little bit something this week, so I'll pass it on to you.
That franchise tag number comes down with, they take the top five quarterbacks in the league,
their annual salaries, and they average it together, and that is how they come up with that number.
So they're going to have to look at, obviously, you know, Kurt Cousins just came in where some of those numbers are at,
and that tell they'll come to that number is what I was told.
Yeah, and so there is a general range that we're pretty sure of.
But I think regardless, as much as people have said, well, whatever the franchise tag ends
out being, that's going to be the floor for DAC negotiations and yet, as you said,
I think the money seems like they're all kind of in the same ballpark.
This didn't feel like, you know, with Ezekiel Elliott and, you know,
DeMarcus Lawrence's contract in recent years where it seemed like there were real fights
over the actual dollar figures.
this feels like more kind of an administrative or a logistical aspect of the negotiation that they're into now.
But it definitely is an important one because the deal still hasn't gotten done yet.
And it's something that neither one of them seems to want to seed on at this point.
But I do think that given the Cowboys history of negotiations and where I think it kind of gets pushed up to the last second and eventually,
I don't want to say they cave, but I mean, they eventually get it done.
and, you know, Demarcus Lawrence gets what he wanted and Zieg got what he wanted and, you know, a few years back, Des Bryant got what he wanted.
And so I feel like at the end of the day, this is probably heading for the four-year deal that Doc wants it to be.
I agree with that.
I guess my big thing is, you know, why the hold-up, why make this thing acrimonious, why not get this done?
Now, granted, they had to wait for the CBA in order to sort of see what the money looks like.
So there is that element to it.
because here's what I think is the risk, Bobby.
He's new, we're seeing this already with Mike McCarthy in his regime.
Things are different.
There's not a lot of loyalty.
I mean, if you look at Jason Witten, Jason Witton,
Jason Witton gone.
Yep.
Robert Quinn gone, even though I know, I know, Byron Jones, I thought was, you know,
most interesting because I know he was like a huge Jason Garrett guy,
Jesse.
Malik Collins, yeah, Randall Cobb, a lot of guys out the door.
Right. So if Mike and Dad don't gel in the first year, and let's say Cowboys don't have a great season, Cowboys have the opportunity to franchise tag him again. But they can also say, you know what, we're going to move on. And then where did that go?
I, that's a good question, but I think they also... I guess you could go to New England.
Well, yeah, since, you know, there seems to be an opening there. But I do think that I would say that's the least likely out.
I think you agree with that. The least likely outcome would be that this turns so acrimonious that, you know, by the time things end next year, everybody's kind of bitter and it ends in some sort of a divorce. I think that's probably the least likely option. It's not zero percent, I guess. But it is something that I think as close as they feel they are generally. And they do because, you know, they wouldn't have gone out and last year made the deal for Robert Quinn. They wouldn't have made the midseason trade for Michael Bennett if they didn't think like they had a window here where,
maybe a guy could push him over the edge.
And so I do think as close as they are,
I couldn't see them wanting to reset the most important position on the field.
I don't see it either, quite frankly.
But you asked me last summer,
I said, Datt Crest got his line item number one,
then Zeeke, then Amari,
and then it was completely thrown out.
It was Zika Amari DAC.
Yep.
I asked you this question.
Would you have done DAC last summer and held off on Zique?
I mean, I think that's,
that's new and me.
I mean, I absolutely.
I mean, look, we can debate the wisdom of long-term locking in with a running back in today's NFL.
I personally just would have let Zeeke's contract play out.
I wouldn't have, you know, gotten an extension done.
But in terms of DAC Prescott, yeah, I think that if you look at, I've made this point on Twitter recently,
that if the Cowboys would have signed him to an extension before last summer and tacked four years,
onto it. They could have set the market at quarterback in all phases with essentially a deal that was
five years, 132 million and like 101 million guaranteed. Now in order to set the market at those
figures, it'd have to be something even more. It'd have to be more like, you know, four years
and I believe it's $140 million or $141 million. And then the guaranteed money would have to be at least
111. And so everything's jumped up. And so that's the thing is that by putting this off,
you're costing yourself more and more money. And, you know, this is all, these are figures that
we're talking about as setting the market before the potential deals this off season, the extensions
this off season get done for guys like, you know, Deshawn Watson and Patrick Mahomes that are
going to push up DAC's numbers even more. Even if it's not DAC going over top of them, the higher
that they set the market, the higher the median's going to, which DAC will be on below them. And so,
I do think that it should have been a priority. I do think that I was talking to somebody
within league circles about this recently and they said there's no doubt that the Cowboys
misplayed this, that Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott were the, the guys that you had to get done
given the timetable. And it wasn't any sort of a surprise. And instead you got done,
Jalen Smith and Ezekiel Elliott, who you still had control over. And so it was kind of bizarre
the way they prioritize things.
And I think it was an attempt at hardball, I guess,
or to try and move those guys.
And in the end, I think it has kind of backfired on the Cowboys,
especially since, you know, I remember last off, or last season.
Okay, but let me ask you this.
If we are to believe my sources,
that say they offered that Prescott a contract
that they felt good about and that it was above the Jared Gossil,
how high are they supposed to go?
I mean, for myself, and you and I...
I mean, how many, how many, I mean, is that not setting the market in some respects?
I mean...
Well, you and I have talked about this that, you know, when it comes down to it,
setting the market or above Jared Goff, like, that could mean any number of things.
That could mean, you know, we gave him more money per year than Jared.

So that would be giving DAC 34.
but okay if you're coming in at you know a hundred million dollars
on the guaranteed money that's significantly below Jared Goff
and I think that again where their confusion is
or where some confusion might be is
as we've discussed it seems more the logistical end of the years
and for our listeners the guaranteed money on Goff was
a hundred and it basically came out to be about 110 million dollars

Okay, so they're essentially, let's see, so what?
10, 11, 12, 13, 14 million off?
Yeah, I mean,
But basically the bigger deal would be, I think, is not the money.
Even if they've matched all the Goff figures, it doesn't sound like DAC is going to sign anything that matches all the Goff figures if it's the wrong years.
And that's something that, you know, when Jared Goff signs a four-year extension, that becomes a six-year deal, okay, because he has two years left on his rookie deal.
But the Cowboys can't work from that framework any longer.
They can't say that.
This is about new money, brand-new contracts, starting from Ground Zero.
And the Cowboys in that negotiating position have kind of put themselves there.
And so I do think that it's tough to view this in any other way other than the Cowboys kind of got a little too cute and maybe flubbed it a little bit.
Or you could be cute and be that Crescott because here's something interesting thanks to our NFL research department.
What I loved about this is that franchise tag has only been used on eight quarterbacks so far.
Only two of them have played on it.
You want to name the two?
Kurt Cousins is one
I know that
He played on it twice
Yes
Is that
Are we counting him twice as the two
Or is there a second one
Well there's
We're counting him
But there is a second one
A second one
Okay then I would
I'm trying to remember
I may be blank in here
Was that Alex Smith or somebody
Drew brief
2005 in San Diego
Drew Brie
That's right
That's right
Was
Think how much money
Kirk Cousin is made
just on franchise tag.
Sure. Yeah, not just on the franchise tag.
Made big money on the franchise tag for two years and then got short-term deals and then just got another extension on that short-term deal.
And look how that played out for Washington, too.
You had to make several trades for Case Keenham and Alex Smith and then you, you know, get Dwayne Haskins.
And all of a sudden, are you not sure about Dwayne Haskins?
And you see what kind of mess is left behind from trying to get cute with Kurt Cousins the way the Redskins did.
and the Vikings ending out feeling good enough to say,
hey, we're going to extend them again.
We're going to put some more years on this.
And so I think actually the best case we can look at...
I guess that's my point.
It's like, don't cry for me.
Like, California nation.
Sure.
Sure.
Yeah.
Like, Jack's still laughing all the way to debate.
Yeah, just like D-Law did.
D-Law was, you know,
D-Law took the cash from the franchise tag.
And it was, you know, it's big money in his pocket.
He's not, you know, crying about having that money.
But, you know, it is...
I think it's more the respecting.
You know, I think at the end of the day, it's like, yes, the money's bigger, but it does come down, obviously, the financial security.
And you can argue that, you know, even Dallas Cowell's quarterback who's that X amount of money and endorsement deals, blah, blah, blah.
To me, that's your side hustle.
I don't, like, I have a problem sort of, like, factoring that in all things, right?
Unless you're giving me a deal like Jalen Smith, where I got clear eye view in your pro shop.
But.
Well, and I mean, does Aaron Rogers hurt for endorsing?
in a market like Green Bay.
Like I think there reaches a point when you were a nationally recognized quarterback
and you're in the top of your field,
the endorsement argument will only go so far anyway
because nationally recognized quarterbacks will get their endorsements.
Yeah, I mean, the whole thing is, I mean, I think at the end of the day,
to your point, what we're saying earlier,
I do think the deal gets done.
I don't think they would have wasted a franchise tag on him.
But if he did, and what's fascinating,
me if I was thinking about this too, they were going to probably, with the franchise
tag, if he had the option not to sign it on July 15th at 3 p.m.
You know, kind of like what D. Law was threatening.
All right, I'm not going to sign it.
But you were going to use the not showing up to OTA's leverage.
Well, there may not even be OTAs.
Yeah, that does that.
But you have to sign that tag by the 15th if you want to play for the team next year.
Am I not correct?
Yeah, no, you're right.
and that does potentially remove some leverage if those OTAs aren't even going to be there.
But similarly, you know, even as we talked about earlier,
how they've kind of become a little more digital in some of their plans that they're trying to implement
in terms of getting caught up this off season.
Yeah, he'd still be absent from that.
Yeah, he wouldn't, he'd be absent from that.
But it is...
He just doesn't strike me as a guy that would put his team in a hole like that either, though.
I feel like the Cowboys are going to use.
I don't think he put him in a hole,
but I do think that Dack has done a really good job.
I think we saw this last year whenever we talked to him about it.
I think Dack has done a really good job of divorcing himself from the negotiations completely
and saying, nope, you guys talk to Todd France at CAA.
Todd France is the one you guys talk to.
But my point is, I don't see him going that punishing route.
We'll say punishing.
That might be too tough.
I don't see him holding out on.
trying to learn the framework of this offense with a new coach
because of the franchise tag.
And I would hate to see the Cowboys knowing that about him
and using that against him because he has been such a good soldier.
I think that though, because he's turned over so much of it, like I say,
to Todd France and CAA, that I could see him just saying,
this isn't me, you know, not showing up,
this is me just going off of whatever my advisor says to do.
And I'm just following what he says.
You guys negotiate with him.
And I could see that being an aspect.
I'll tell you this, and I mentioned this before, and I won't say who the other one was.
But I do know that there was a couple of years ago, there was a player who was talking to the Cowboys about trying to get an extension or trying to get a new agent.
They were looking for a new agent.
So they just asked the Cowboys internally, hey, who would you recommend?
And this player was told by somebody within the organization said, you know, just about anybody as long as it's not.
and then they named two agents and one of them was Todd France.
And so the Cowboys do not want big money negotiations with Todd France.
And it's because he is such a bulldog.
And I don't think that's any sort of a slap at Todd France.
So nobody should take it that way.
It's just the Cowboys know he's tough and they didn't want to deal with tough.
And then that's what they're getting right now with Dak Prescott.
Well, and Todd, I'll just go ahead and say it.
He's not the easiest to deal with.
Even as a reporter.
But I respect his game.
I have an agent within even my,
my own business, and mine certainly had the softer touch. But, you know, if I was working with
an organization like the Cowboys, it does have, you know, people like Emmett Smith and Michael Urban
who can go out there and get a narrative out there for them, which we've sort of seen with
Emmett, I want a bulldog too. I mean, let's just look at some of the clients that he had. I mean,
he's got Golden Tate. He had, he just had Joe Burrow.
He signed the, he was the one who negotiated a couple years ago, the market setting deal for,
he was the one who negotiated the market setting deal for Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan was one of his guys.
And Matt Ryan got the top market setting deal for quarterbacks when he signed.
And so it's definitely he's somebody, and we played that audio, you remember before,
where he talked about negotiating or getting Fletcher Cox's negotiation done with the Eagles,
that the Eagles were pressuring Fletcher Cox to sign.
Todd France talked about flying in,
meeting up with Fletcher and saying,
you know,
the team that benefits from this deal is trying to tell you,
take it, take it, take it, take it.
Why would they be telling you to take it, take it, take it if it's a great deal for you?
And talked about, you know, kind of how tough they got
and that it was a gamble that he said ended out netting them, you know,
30 plus million dollars and guaranteed money by waiting when they did.
And so he's not afraid to do this.
And he, of course, is the representative for Joey Bosa.
Bosa was one of the more famous in recent years
rookie holdouts because things weren't, you know,
quite up to their liking in terms of language in the contract.
And so Todd France has been known to play hardball.
And it's something I think the Cowboys just knew they didn't want to necessarily deal with,
especially with the most important contract negotiation that they had.
It's not all glued, though, because, because Dak Prescott, you know,
while that still is hanging out there, they did exclusively franchise.
him so he is going to be here next year and they locked up
Amari Cooper despite a reportedly
late push from the Washington Redskins
and you know reports out there saying that it was lots
more money than the Cowboys ended out signing him four or five years
100 million and 60 million guaranteed.
You surprised at all that that's the route Amari
decided to take. He apparently
decided to go for the cowboy brand or
the comfortability, you know, how comfortable he was
with the Cowboys over the loads of money that Washington
apparently was offering him.
Especially with a new coach in Ron Rivera.
But as our boy Orlando Scandrick once told me or told someone close to him that related to me,
the facilities are very different in Washington.
It is great to be a Dallas Cowboys player and everything that comes with it.
I think what I do appreciate about Amari Cooper is the man of his word.
I mean, he told me at the Pro Bowl that he didn't see himself going anywhere else.
In fact, listen to this interview.
Do you want to be back in Dallas?
I do.
You know, I mean that wholeheartedly.
I love Dallas.
You know, just to be a player coming from, just to have the opportunity to play on a different team.
You know, you see the changes and stuff like that.
And I feel like it's home.
I feel like I want to live there for a long time.
And then there was this on 105.3, the fan.
Listen, I love being a Dallas cowboy.
I love everything about it.
I was just thinking about that today.
I think about it almost every day.
day really um you know just prime time games as we play but seems like more night games than
anybody and that always feels good to football player um you know everything the facility i love it here
frisco i stay at now um just the aura of being a Dallas cowboy i mean he can't beat it so
i want to be a Dallas Cowboys for life so he basically told us he's sticking around but as you
know money changes everything uh we certainly saw that with uh randallandall
Cobb. And I don't fault Randall Cobb for leaving, first of all. I mean, he played on a one-year
$5 million deal. And when you just think of what Randall Cobb did last year, I mean, there
were people that had questions about his production, whether he still had it. And then he ended up
with 15 point yards per catch. In one season, he had 55 passes for 828 yards. And then this was
a guy I just thought was such a glue in the locker.
room. And, you know, my sources in Houston told me the reason why they loved him was that
he's this smart player that they as the inside outside slept for them. And this thing came
together pretty quick. If you weren't familiar with the terms of the deal, three years,
$27 million, that Cowboys were not going to pay Randall Cobb. No, no, no, no, no we're close.
And he was a guy, not only you mentioned the 800 yards or whatever. That was a guy who I, I don't
know if people remember, he had some hard luck, too, with penalties taking off about another 200 yards on
the board. He was, and it had unusually bad luck with, you know, illegal motion or holding plays
that took away big plays for in the season. So he, he was definitely a, a top, you know,
tier slot receiver for them this past year. And as you mentioned, a great glue guy,
absolutely one of my favorite people I've run into in that locker room in terms of,
just his professionalism and, and a total gentleman. And not to mention a, and I say this as a
married man, the most beautiful eyes you'll ever see.
Randall Cobb. They are, they are gorgeous. You get lost in those eyes.
And I got to tell you, since we're being fully transparent, I did have a little bit of a girl crush on his wife, Ida Cobb, who was a chemical patent attorney.
And absolutely stunning. They're just such a great family. And so, you know, I think that the locker, if you think about it, thinking of a veteran leadership that they're losing, Jason Whitten, Randall Cobb.
I'm glad our boy, Sean Lee comes back for what is it. I think it's an 11th.
season? Yeah, 11 season. He missed one for injury, but yeah, 11 years now with the Cowboys.
And I think back to the Rams game, where they kind of kept playoff Hope alive and in the
locker room, I just think back to Jordan Lewis when they asked him, you know, what was it like
to see such a great game from Sean Lee? And Jordan Lewis said, that's our captain. And it didn't
matter that he didn't have, you know, the C patch on his jersey or anything else. I think that is
important. That defense does view Sean Lee as their leader. And that's the guy that they turn to.
So for a team that seemingly lacked a lot of leadership, I think, at times last year and veteran savvy,
and now losing Randall Cobb and Jason Witten and Jeff Heath,
I think it is nice that you're going to be able to at least keep Sean Lee in place,
especially with, you know, still some squishiness in terms of comments from Stephen Jones
and the organization on when exactly late in Vanderech is supposed to be ready.
Squishiness. I love that.
And it is a little bit.
And a couple of other things, Gerald McCoy, let's not overlook that signing.
Yeah.
You know, this is Mr. Pro Bowl himself.
Which I think is funny that, you know, Gerald McCoy, who is like a Rod Marinelli
prototype, who Rod Marinelli has often, you know, fawn over when he gets asked about
him and the media, I think it's a little funny slash sad that as soon as Rod Marinelli
departs, that's when Gerald McCoy finally ends up with the Cowboys.
But, yeah, a six-time Pro Bowl.
Spend his first nine years with the Buccaneers.
Then he had last year with Carolina,
eight straight seasons of at least five sacks.
Signs a three-year, $18 million deal,
$9 million guaranteed.
He just turned 32,
so he is on the higher end of the age spectrum.
And it essentially can be a one-year deal.
They do have some opt-outs, options after next season.
So I don't know that bringing in Gerald McQuain necessarily discounts them
from looking at interior defensive linemen earlier in the draft either.
It's fascinating.
Let's throw out another name.
Sir, I was getting some text messages there as we record this.
Well, the big one we haven't touched on yet is Robert Quinn,
leaving to the Bears for five years, $70 million,
which is, if you'll remember,
and I know the cap has grown since then,
but five years, $70 million was the deal that Des Bryant got
that the Cowboys, you know, stressed so much,
finally, you know, putting pen to paper on.
And so Robert Quinn got a sizable amount of money.
a lot of guys getting paid here
you know
Robert Quinn goes
Randall Cobb
Malik Collins
Jason Whitney and Jeff Heath
that trio had to
Oakland or to Las Vegas
with the Raiders
and then the big one
Byron Jones
so the Cowboys could be in line
for some bigger
comp picks
when this is all said
and done depending on
on the guys that they sign
he got paid though didn't he
I mean
yeah no you you can't
you can't
there's there reaches a point
as much as we all appreciate
Omari Cooper's loyalty here
and I do
think I do want to just quickly circling back on that point.
Amari Cooper told you, told the fan, told everybody he loves it here.
And we heard, you know, from Raiders fans, wow, he looks like he really loves it there.
So as much as people want to interpret bad body language or pouting or whatever else,
Amari Cooper does like it here.
Amari Cooper is happy to be here.
And I think that should squash any sort of questions about how happy he is to be a Dallas
Cowboy.
I think he definitely likes being a Dallas Cowboy.
and I think he definitely likes his teammates.
Let's talk about another guy, see if this gets you excited at all.
Emmanuel Sanders, I tweeted out that the Cowboys had at least an interest in him.
Emmanuel Sanders, I'm told, very interested in the Cowboys himself.
Now, we just saw Randall Cobb, a slot guy, who again has inside and outside flags.
He signed last year on a $5 million deal.
So I think in order for this to happen, Cowboys do need a slot guy.
Because keep in mind, they've got Michael Gallup here.
Now, Michael Gallup, I'm not mistaken, can go inside and outside as well.
So, I mean, you do have that.
And Emmanuel Sanders has done that during his career.
He's been able to play inside and outside.
He's probably more inside now, but he has done it.
So a little versatility.
But I think it would have to be a very similar deal in order to make that happen.
As it was ascribed to me by a source from the Cowboys, their focus is.

That is back three years, $15 million.
So Anthony Brown, Jack Prescott and Marie Cooper, those are the guys they've retained to this point.
And so at Corner now you've got Jordan Lewis, Chedobie Ousier, Anthony Brown, which is what you've had.
Yeah, and Ousier and Lewis are both hitting the last year of their deals.
Which is kind of fascinating.
I did see this report from Jeremy Fowler at ESPN
that Desmond Trouffant
released by the Falcons was drawing interest from the Redskins
and Dallas looking for a multi-year deal
29 did you roll the dice on him?
I would be interested in Desmond Troufant
just because he is somebody who is,
he's on the farther end of the age spectrum again,
just like Gerald McCoy's.
But these are the type of guys that they roll the dice on anyway.
The Cowboys is,
know, can we get somebody who's, you know, maybe potentially going to be a value buy,
like they did with Robert Quinn and Michael Bennett and Randall Cobb.
And they hit on a lot of those last year, actually.
So I do think that that falls in line with the type of signings they typically make,
guys who are maybe a little bit of a low buy, but a high ceiling.
And one thing to remember there is, you know, who was the defensive coordinator for Desmond Troufant,
the first two years in the league?
Tell me more.
Mike Nolan.
So Mike Nolan has experience with Desmond Trufant.
and has coached him before.
And so there's a connection there.
And so it could, but you know, as this is a team that has looked for some veteran leadership,
Desmond Truffant, a guy who's played in the league for, you know, seven years now or so and has been to a Pro Bowl.
You don't necessarily want to completely sacrifice, though, in the name of veteran leadership,
young legs.
And you want to make sure that these guys are still able to play at a high enough level.
that they can play meaningful snaps
because the Cowboys definitely do need to improve
at cornerback.
With some of the poor play that they had last year
and then losing their very best corner
to the dolphins and Byron Jones.
And what I'll be interested in is another name that I'm curious about.
Yeah.
A lot of $17 million.
You go Byron.
Yeah, and happy for it.
That's another guy.
You know, we talk about guys that we like
and all around good guys.
Byron Jones fits that as well.
Byron Jones is one of the,
you know,
nicer down-to-earth people I've run into in the locker room.

What grows in the forest?
Trees? Sure.
Know what else grows in the forest?
Our imagination, our sense of wonder,
and our family bonds grow too.
Because when we disconnect from this and connect with this,
we reconnect with each other.
The forest is closer than you think.

Well, and let's often talk about your fault before we move off the cornerback position.
You know, we were talking earlier about the difficulty of getting those physicals
and really checking the player out.
Keep in mind you missed seven games last year.
You know, in a broken forearm and he had some injuries that ended up missing seven games.
So just something to think about it.
And one of the reasons the Cowboys did get Randall Cobb on a bargain was because of his injury history.
that he had trouble, he had, you know,
trouble staying healthy. It worked out for him this year.
But that is something that
usually is associated with that bargain by.
So these bargain buys are made him more complicated. Even
Emmanuel Sanders, a guy who has, you know, had some
bigger injuries in his career.
And, you know, injuries to his lower body
and so much of his game is his lower body
and his shiftingness that, you know,
I'm sure the Cowboys, with him
getting up there in age, they'd want to know that everything
was all right there. And it's
a tough spot to be in.
I do wonder, another name that I'd throw out
there for corner just because there is some corner safety flexibility for him. He's somebody that
Mike McCarthy has experience with and it's somebody that the Cowboys front office liked when he was
coming out in the draft is Demarius Randall who would be played for the Browns last year and had
been traded by the Packers to the Browns. But when Mike McCarthy was fired in Green Bay,
I know Cleveland reporters had asked Demarius Randall, what do you think about that? And he had
nothing but nice things to say about Mike McCarthy said, you know, I'd love to play for him again one day.
I don't think you can blame him for what happened there.
So Demarius Randall would be an interesting name to me as somebody that,
as you try and connect dots of relationships versus talent versus need,
Demarius Randall would be an interesting name to float for the Cowboys there in the secondary, I think.
Well, I think we've addressed some of the movement that they've got going on here
as we continue to hunker down and shutter down.
It will be interesting to see if this thing gets to that point where we shut her in place,
Bobby when we record this next podcast.
You know, we told you we're likely becoming to you about once a month in the off season.
We may get so bored.
We might try and come to you a couple of times.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, this may be, you know, we've got a, we've got to fill time here.
You know, I don't know how much more guess who in Candyland I'm going to be able to
take at the house.
Well, and something that I think our fan base will certainly appreciate with you, Bobby,
and continue to follow obviously you on Instagram as well as Twitter.
is the fact that you are so incredibly dialed in with these prospects, with these college guys.
And so on our next podcast, let's sort of deep dive ahead of the draft.
Let's talk about some of these guys are on the Cowboys radar.
You know, you were a guy that is in contact with a lot of these guys or watching film.
You've been at some of these training facilities.
So let's deep dive into some of that coming up so people, since they've got a lot of time on their hands,
to do some reading, can catch up with some of these guys and see how they might fit
into the Cowboys News and Notes.
But before I leave you, I'd like to say that our boy, J.G., Jason Garrett, still thriving.
I got a photo submitted to me, TMZ style, of Jason Garrett in Dallas at Katie Trail, walking his dog, all smiles.
He was being a responsible dog owner, had the doggie bag, and one of those things that you throw the ball that comes back to you.
So glad to see that J.G. thriving.
and in lockdown here in Dallas, still not in New York.
Absolutely.
And I did love the before we went on full-scale lockdown last week.
It was cool seeing Jason at Oklahoma Pro Day chatting it up with DeMarco Murray.
A lot of fun memories coming back.
We're back Thursday.
