And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go on a Friday. This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:48 We have a loaded show today, absolutely packed show today, one hour from now, off a winning week, blazing football. Like last year, almost 70% of the time. We had a winning week last year. We're off to another winning week. Love my picks this week. Take some favorites this week. I don't do that much. Joy Taylor is joining me, Joy.
Starting point is 00:03:12 How are you? I'm great. Good morning. By the way, Joy says by the Ernestine book about Skip Bayless, about skipping their relationship. Balls, how to keep your relationship alive when you live with a sports-obsessed guy. I'm halfway through it. It's supposed to be a riot.
Starting point is 00:03:27 It's great. It's a great read. If you want to get to know, Skip Bayless more, too, you should read it. And she's very funny herself. She's amazing. Let's start with this. If I just asked you, traits, I don't care what guys are drafted. I don't care about TV.
Starting point is 00:03:43 If I said, what matters for quarterbacks? Winning, productivity, consistency, leadership, health, focus. Do you really love football? You get this morning to Dak Prescott, who you don't want to pay. is better than Cam Newton in all of those. Winning, DAC has won, nine of his last 11 starts. Cam's lost eight straight starts.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Leadership, health, ascending, focus. Folks, Tampa Bay didn't have a pro bowler on defense last night. Carolina was at home. They had to win. Cam, O for three in the red zone. Abysmal on third down, three for four. 14, 24 of 50, couldn't extend drives. Carolina's defense is shot by the fourth quarter.
Starting point is 00:04:42 You don't want to pay Dak Prescott, and you keep telling me Cam's a star. Today, Dak is better than Cam. Well, call that is unfair. Dak has amazing weapons. All right, let's talk about it. Zeke. Well, Cam's got Christian McCaffrey. You don't think he can play?
Starting point is 00:04:58 Well, I mean, Jason Whitten. Well, Cam's got Greg Olson. He's better right now than. 88-year-old Jason Witten. Well, what about Amari Cooper? What about Curtis Samuel? That guy's got game. Well, what about Michael Gallup, the emerging?
Starting point is 00:05:13 Well, what about DJ Moore? Stop. Dak and Cam both have enough weapons. A back, two good receivers, a good tight end. And both clearly have competent coaches. Ron Revere has gotten to a Super Bowl, won his division. Jason Garrett's won playoff games. one is division. Stop with the nonsense.
Starting point is 00:05:35 All you need to know, teams tell you what they think about your quarterback. On the biggest plays of the game, the biggest play of the season for the Carolina Panthers and watch who they hike the ball to. Direct snap. They fake the toss. McCaffrey. Depends where they put it. What a play by Hargraves out on the edge. and he did not get it. Tampa Bay is going to win this game with that defensive stop.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Cam has another touchdown pass in four games. Okay, running quarterbacks, Cam, they work in this league. But as we often say, they don't last. So what you have to do if you're running quarterback, run around for a couple years until the light goes on. It's a very fast NFL game compared to college. And then Russell Wilson, Steve Young did this to a Hall of Fame level. About year three, the light goes on, and then you can run occasionally, but you are really a pocket quarterback with mobility.
Starting point is 00:06:37 By the way, I'm finding Dak Prescott is running less and passing more. But if you're a running quarterback, it all works. It just doesn't last. Do it for a couple of years. The problem with Cam, Cam has never taken the time to become a pocket quarterback. Cam is too distracted from day one in this league. He's distracted being Cam. He's distracted being cool.
Starting point is 00:06:57 He's distracted with his commercial. he's distracted with his fashion. He is never committed to being a great pocket quarterback. I have seen more growth from Lamar Jackson in the last six months that I've seen from Cam in eight years. So this morning when you question should you pay DAC, DAC is an ascending, winning, increasingly productive, coachable leader at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Cam is an eroding, marginally productive, arguably uncoachable, semi-healthy, non-winning, depends on the Sunday or moment productive quarterback. And you want Cam over DAC. And you don't want to pay DAC. So, I mean, if you don't want to pay DAC, what are you going to pay Cam? Because I've been listening to this DAC thing for a year.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Those two staffs last night did not trust their quarterbacks. Tampa Bay wants to run the Bull. ball and they don't want to hike the ball to Cam in a big spot. I watch Dallas every year. DAC attempts up. Productivity. Up. Winning.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Up. Trust. Up. I mean, Superman's over. When Superman can't reach over the goal line and get a yard, they won't hike him to it. It's over. Cape off. By the way, if you want to hear Cam after the game, I will say this.
Starting point is 00:08:23 He is the most elegantly dressed quarterback. Let's go with him. ever. Through my lens, you know, it's hard to look defensive guys in their eyes after a game like this, you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, offensively, we don't hold up by end of the bargain. I have to be better. No matter what physical condition I'm in, no matter what foot, shoulder, I ain't get the job done tonight, man, and it's frustrating. I wish I could say something other than that. It's time for me to look myself in the mirror and, you know, do some real soul searching because I had opportunities night and I didn't get it down.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Well, his fashion, I will say this, and I'm not a fashion guru. His fashion gets better. His fashion's gotten cooler. The winning, less, fashion, better. That I won't argue. All right, let's shift to this. This is the way it works in the NFL. Everybody gets their schedule.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Coaches, players, a couple circle games there. You know, oh, I'm facing my ex. I'm facing the guy who fired me. Belichick, you know, he loves to face the Jets. He loves to face to Browns. Browns fired him. He loves to stick it to the Browns. And the Jets offered him the job he wasn't interested.
Starting point is 00:09:36 He loves to beat the Jets. You know, everybody's got a guy and ex. So, B.J. grabbed his schedule this year. And that first game, he circled, back in New York, Monday night football, I'm going to have a little homecoming and light those crappy Jets defensive backs up. So yesterday, unprovoked, nobody brought up Greg Williams. He took a shot at the current, former Brown's interim coach, current Jets defensive coordinator. If I was a coach, I would never teach what he teaches, but that's just him and what he does.
Starting point is 00:10:11 So there's no real getting under my skin anymore. I had people who were here when he was here telling us, you know, if you get a chance, take a shot at him. If you can, you know, hurt him. I guarantee he's going to leave the game hurt. Probably just got to watch out for the chance. cheap shots and the dirty hits and all the things that he likes to teach. That was not random. Either was saying, I'm going to wear the watch again.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Now, let me start by saying, I'm not a Greg Williams fan. I think he's loud. There's a lot of ego. There's a reason 16 years in the NFL, nobody's giving him a head job. God, he did a great job for Cleveland last year. They didn't give him the head job. I think he sometimes can be a little outdated. I don't like his loud coaching style.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Not a huge fan. Clearly, he's capable of coaching, but he's not my cup of tea. So some of the claims he goes out to hurt people, you know, it wouldn't shock me. Number two, though, OBJ has got a plan. This was a circle game. Back in New York, I'm on stage. I'm going to be a star. And I will tell you, this is going to work for OBJ. I think this week, I think OBJ is going to go to New York, and he's going to get nine or ten catches, and he's going to have a couple of touchdowns. Because frankly, the Jets secondary is a mess. Sam Darnold's got mono, meaning they'll use Trevor Simeon, meaning the Jets will have a lot of three-and-outs,
Starting point is 00:11:26 five and six play series. They'll give it back to Baker Mayfield. Baker will be in a stage, but this was a plan. I'm going to wear the watch again was a plan. Greg Williams, I don't believe in what he teaches, is a plan. Obj knows what he's doing here. And I think in this instance, for OBJ, it will work. I think it's a great stage. I think Cleveland's going to win. If I was a gambler, I don't think it's a great bet because I don't know who's playing for the Jets. They got multiple guys sick and hurt. And I mean, Cleveland's offensive. line is not good and the Jets D line is their strength. But I think this is all a plan.
Starting point is 00:12:01 The watch is a plan. That was for the stage Monday Night Football. That was a circle game. I'm going to show the world. You're going to laugh at me for going to Cleveland? I'll show you. And by the way, I get it. We all want to show our X.
Starting point is 00:12:12 We upgraded. I get it. Don't get me wrong. I've probably done it in my life. A lot of people have done it. But I think this was coordinated. I think OBJ looked at that schedule and thought, New York Jets, Monday night football.
Starting point is 00:12:25 I'm lighting him up. And this time, I think he will. I don't play fantasy football, but I think he will have a very good game on Monday night. Coming up next, nobody has actually said this. But a lot of you have said, why would the Patriots go get Antonio Brown, who was supposed to play this Sunday? And you're like, they don't need him. And Belichick, I mean, they eventually got rid of Randy Moss.
Starting point is 00:12:49 He's very disruptive. I absolutely believe, I know why they went and got A.B. and it has nothing to do with the Patriots. And I think it's right in front of us. And all we have to do is think about it for two or three minutes. And it makes absolute complete sense. I don't even think you can argue it. And I think I know how Belichick's thinking.
Starting point is 00:13:08 That's coming up. Blazing five, 50 minutes from now off a winning week, top of next hour. Listen, better sleep. I had a good night, sleep last night after a rocky one couple of nights ago. I had a nightmare last night, Joy. Yeah? Yeah. But I got back to sleep.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I had to get up, clear my head, open my eyes for about five, ten minutes. Because you know if you have a nightmare and then you go right and then you try to close your eyes again, the nightmare comes back. Yeah, you got to reset. You can see the snakes chasing you and stuff. So I had a nightmare at about 12.11, I got up in them and then I got back to sleep by 1240 because my bed's comfortable. It's called a Casper. It's transforming the way we sleep. Perfect balance, comfort alignment, four layers, premium phone.
Starting point is 00:13:43 They have zoned support, which is good for your back and it's alignment, which I need. Bedding, sheets, pillows, bedframes, a dog bed. I got that for Yose. We have two dogs. Yosey and Buddy, and they bought Yossi for Yosemite, and she went to Yosemite. And Yose and Buddy both have a dog bed. Cool and comfortable, sleep like I do. Casper.com.

And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations
Starting point is 00:15:26 with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:15:59 I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:16:23 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. What's up, guys? This is Cliver Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:16:47 And on my podcast, The Cliver Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Car shopping's confusing, a lot of terms. Dealer price, list price, don't be confused. Go to Truecar.com, save three grand off
Starting point is 00:17:30 MSRP, know what the fees and accessories are when you get to the dealership. I think the ultimate sign of respect is when I have to adjust to you as a rival. In the NFL, everybody adjusts to Belichick. Belichick adjusts to one person. I want you to think about this. So Antonio Brown's going to play for New England this week. And a lot of you are asking, why would they get Antonio Brown?
Starting point is 00:17:55 They don't need him. I mean, this is a really nice receiving corps. The jets are a mess. Miami's, you know, Buffalo, what's the point? Why the disruption? Belichick is reacting to Andy Reid. So I want you to think about this. What are the obstacles for New England to get to the Super Bowl?
Starting point is 00:18:16 Don't worry about the NFC. That's, that's, you know, Belichick will have two weeks to figure out the NFC team. I think we all look at Houston. Belichick owns them. Pittsburgh. Belichick owns them. Chargers. Belichick owns them.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Philip Rivers is like 0 and 11 against Tom Brady. The two quarterbacks, coaches, GMs that Belichick saw is his biggest obstacles. Indianapolis, Chris Ballard, and Andrew Luck. Andrew retired. Belichick sees one obstacle to get to the Super Bowl. And it's a guy that's giving. given him fits, Andy Reed. Andy Reid's last five games, regardless of quarterback against Bill Belichick, are unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:18:56 35 points a game, 420 yards, 50% third down, 150, 15 quarterback ready. Nobody does that against Belichick, ever. Andy Reid does it every time. In fact, the last, not only does Andy do it, his disciples do it against Belichick. Matt Nagy with Trubisky dropped 31 on. on Belichick last year. Mitch Trubisky. Doug Peterson,
Starting point is 00:19:21 Andy Reid, disciple Super Bowl, beat Belichick with Nick Foles. He could not stop Nick Foles. Andy Reed in the Super Bowl in Philadelphia. Remember that? Donovan McNabb had 360 yards. Brian Westbrook had 100 yards. They were nine for 16 on third down.
Starting point is 00:19:40 And on a broken leg, Tio had nine catches. Andy Reed is the kryptonite. He can't stop Andy Reid. The two games, and now Belichick sees Patrick Mahomes with Andy Reid. He's like, yeah, yeah. Last two times they played Kansas City, they give it up 40 points and 31. And this is with this great New England defense the last couple years. And in both games, Gronk was huge.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Gronk's not here. This is the ultimate respect to Andy Reid. I can't stop him. I couldn't stop him with Alex Smith. I can't stop him. I can't stop Doug Peterson. I couldn't stop Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky. This is the one obstacle.
Starting point is 00:20:21 And at this point for Belichick, it's like the Yankees. They're not playing for wild cards. The Yankees are playing to win the World Series. Okay, that's all they're playing for. LeBron at this point, it's about winning titles. Didn't give a rip about getting into the playoffs. Belichick at this point, it's just about getting to the Super Bowl. And then you roll the dice, take your chances on your health and who do you play two weeks to prepare.
Starting point is 00:20:41 But I think this is a shout out to Andy Reid. It's like, hell, I can't stop this guy. And in fact, I'd say there's been a couple. times a couple years ago they embarrassed new england and so i think this ab is listen this is our last obstacle i
Starting point is 00:20:56 clearly can't stop andy reed and with patrick mahomes i'm not taking my chances you got to give me another weapon i i'm going to be in a shootout and i don't think belichick thinks that with pittsburgh i think he thinks he can stop big ben he can stop watson he can stop philip rivers
Starting point is 00:21:11 i don't think he can stop annie reed i don't think he can stop his disciples his system his creativity, and he's not stopping him now with Patrick Mahomes. Here's Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. So Jets' head coach Adam Gase announced on Thursday that running back Levyon Bell was having an MRI on his shoulder.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Yeah. He was very saddened in that press conference all around. Bad body language. Yeah, you know, I thought about when he mentioned that. Look, I'm more familiar with Adam Gase than probably the rest of the country because it's, of Miami. But I feel like in that spot, you've got to come out and kind of... You got to be the confidence in that situation.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Not even sell it. Like, we all know what a disaster it is that he's not out there. Sam Donald's not out there. That Leon Bell is hitting an MRI. But just, you know, flip the energy a little bit. You can't do this. It's going to be out. Well, good news for the Jets, at least.
Starting point is 00:22:09 The bell announced on Twitter Thursday afternoon. I got great news. My shoulder is fine. So no worries. Just had to make sure everything was ready. to go for Monday night. Let's get it. This game looked like it was going to be a very big deal. You know what, Trevor Simian has got a winning record, Joy. This could be an intro. I mean, I think Cleveland should win, but Trevor Simmion's got a winning record in the NFL. Sam Darnel doesn't.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Well, let's talk about that. So Sam Darnel is out Monday night, obviously. He has mono, and Trevor Simeon will be the starting quarterback. He signed with the Jets this offseason and has started 24 regular season games with the Broncos, and he said he's ready to step back into the starting role. All right. I've played, so, you know, I guess the sense that I've been there and I've done it a little bit. It's been a while again, so it'll be, you know, like I said, I'm chomping at the bit to compete and be out there with the guys. We got such a mentally tough team and so many good players.
Starting point is 00:23:05 These guys are built for this. I mean, you know, Sam, I don't just not hurt, but we're going to have a couple of injuries this year. That's just the nature of it, but this team's built to handle it. So, Simeon is 13 and 11. Yeah. His record as a start. He was 2532 for 158 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, which, you know, obviously
Starting point is 00:23:26 he got a lot of playing time in the preseason, too. I don't know that we should be overreacting that much to the situation. Obviously, Trevor Simeon is not Sam Darnold. Are you talking me off the ledge? A little bit. I think so. I mean, I still think Cleveland is going to win, but when you said Sam, Donald's out, it's like, okay, like it's going to be a blowout.
Starting point is 00:23:47 Like, it's just like immediate reaction. I was also thinking about Levy and Bell MRI. Right. But Levy and Bell's fine. Trevor Simeon is a solid backup. Yeah, he's probably not as good as Tanna Hill's the best backup in the league right now, right? Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Case Keenum is maybe the case Keenum and probably the second best. I mean, in backup, Trevor Simeon's not, he's someone at the top. six or seven backups and he's capable. Tanniel's the best. We know that. After that, Simeon's in a group of about five guys that can win games. I mean, based off of the fact that it's not, it's an away game for the Browns. They're coming off a terrible loss. And you do have Levy on Bell.
Starting point is 00:24:27 And I mean, there's some other injuries too. But I don't think that it's going to be as much of a disaster as we think. It's more of a disappointment that Sam Donald's not out there than I think that the Jets are in a really bad position. I still think it's going to be a good game. Finally, James Winston was 16 and 25 for 208 yards and touchdown and no interceptions in the Bucks 2014 win over the Panthers last night and after the game head coach Bruce Ariens had some very complimentary things to say about his quarterback probably was outstanding
Starting point is 00:24:54 you know he had a hell of a week as far as mentally getting ready for this ball game and so yeah I think that's the type of game he can play I think he played that bad last week you know we had he had the one bad play and tonight he was really spot on that win last night against the Panthers ended a seven game road losing street I found it wildly entertaining. Am I nuts on this? Even with a delay, I sat there for two and a half hours. I was like, in its inefficiency, it was
Starting point is 00:25:21 fascinating. It was close. Well, it was, it was fascinating. Yes. It wasn't well played. It wasn't well played. No. But it was a revealing game. I don't know that it was, it was an outstanding game. That's a perfect word. It was a very revealing game. Yes. That's a perfect word. I wouldn't
Starting point is 00:25:37 use the word outstanding to describe anything that happens in that game, except for that last play call for the Panthers. That was outstandingly odd. I would say that. But this is an important year for James Winston because Bruce Ariens is a no-nonsense
Starting point is 00:25:53 guy and you feel like if Bruce Ariens can't turn James Winston into a viable franchise quarterback. James has really had turnover issues. Like really like horrible. And my knock on James out of college was big enough, strong enough. Judgment
Starting point is 00:26:09 not good. His judgment in the NFL, a lot of mistakes. So the question is, it's kind of last chance. We're giving you a veteran offensive guy. If you watched that game last night, what Tampa was really telling you is they want to take all the pressure off, James. They ran the heck out of the football. So the staff told you, we think James can, because they asked him to make some big throws, but they were heavy run first, which is the way I think you should do with most quarterbacks, not named Brady.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Right, right. And James has had some other issues as well. So having a stable culture and a season veteran coach, this is the best situation James can be in. So if it doesn't work out this year, then, you know, you have your answer. But outstanding is a bit of a stretch, but a good win for James. Yeah, good stuff. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:26:57 The Hurd-Ly News. Yeah, I will say this. You know, there is some interesting games, interesting games this week. So I looked at the schedule. Well, this is fascinating to me. So you look at Minnesota Green Bay. One of them is going to go 2 and O. These are good teams.
Starting point is 00:27:15 New England AB debuts. That's very interesting. Seattle, Pittsburgh, is Big Ben shot. Dallas, Washington, is that good? Arizona, Baltimore's Kyler against Lamar. Great watch. Kansas City, Oakland. Hey, Gruden won.
Starting point is 00:27:32 New Orleans, Rams, Philadelphia, Atlanta. There's a lot of interesting games this week. And there's a lot of big personalities playing. Keep your eye. Keep your eye on a game with a lot of boring people. Joe Flacco has the personality of celery. And the coach, Vic Fangio, is dry toast. And the Bears won't let Mitch Trubisky talk.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Keep your eye on Chicago at Denver. This game is huge. And I'll tell you why. Minnesota and Green Bay play. So somebody's got. going 2 and 0 in that division. Chicago cannot go 0 and 2. Secondly, everybody knew coming in, Chicago's schedule middle and late is brutal. In the middle, they've got to face the Saints, the Chargers, at the Eagles, at the Rams, and their last four are Dallas at the Packers,
Starting point is 00:28:24 Patrick Mahomes, and at Minnesota. They have to win early. Number three is Chicago's getting a massive scheduling break. Not only did they play on Thursday, and they get a 10 game prep. But Denver played on the late Monday night football game on the road. So, like, this is laid out. But what's interesting is Denver, and this is one of the strangest stats in the NFL, is unbeatable at home in week one and two. Last 36 games, Denver, since the merger, weeks one and two at home. 33 and 3.
Starting point is 00:29:11 And Vic Fangio was Trabiski's defensive coordinator in Chicago last two years. Knows all his tricks. And Denver couldn't get a sack against Oakland. So Vaughn Miller and Bradley Chubb are in a spicy mood for a home opener. This may have a bunch of dull guys in it, but I think is a fascinating home opener for Denver. And I think Chicago, with Green Bay and Minnesota playing, seasons on the line here.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Because your schedule is Chicago middle and late is, it's an abscess tooth. It's all nothing but hurt. It is bad. So that game is, and again, Flacco, Vic Fangio and Tribeschi, I mean, you talk about not compelling personalities, but that game, keep your eye on it.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Albert Breer, NFL reporter, lead content guy, MMQB, joining us via the Coward Global Satellite Network. All right, let's start, Albert, with Antonio Brown. Yeah. going to play how much only I think he practiced twice what do you make of what he'll do against the dolphins in Miami well Colin generally if Belichick puts a guy out there on Wednesday and Thursday he's going to be part of the game plan and so my guess would be that they would probably pace him a little bit he's in shape he was in a training camp of course I'll be it limited in a training camp he wasn't the Raiders training
Starting point is 00:30:31 camp during August so he is in football shape and ready to go and you know know, generally the way this works is they'll give him a little bit of the playbook, then a little bit more than a little bit more. And so I would think that they would probably have some game plan stuff in to get his feet start to build chemistry with Brady, but I don't think he's going to be a full-time player quite yet. I want to talk about Sam Darnold's got Mono. It looks like Labian Bell is fine, but Mono is probably minimum out for two weeks.
Starting point is 00:31:00 I don't think they beat Cleveland on Monday night, although I do think Trevor Simeon is one of the top four or five backups in the league. Tanny Hill is probably the best backup. Are we looking at a situation here where the Jets season could come unglued by Monday night at 11 p.m. Eastern 0 and 2? There's no question about it, Colin. I mean, it's not just about the injuries. It's about what's ahead on the schedule.
Starting point is 00:31:22 If you look at it, they lose on Monday night. They're 0 and 2 in their next four games. They've got two against the Patriots. They've got the Cowboys and they've got the Eagles. It's just hard to find a win right now. I mean, they could legitimately be eliminated from the AFCs halfway through the season based on where the Patriots are and based on where they are. So there's going to be a challenge for Adam Gase. I'm not having his quarterback.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Things going sideways the way they did blowing a double-digit lead to Buffalo last week. And then losing it home on Monday night, coming out of that and seeing what they have ahead. I certainly think that, you know, you look at where the jets are just developmentally right now where the roster is and everything else. there are big time challenges for Adam Gase and keeping this team together based on what's ahead. Albert Breer joining us, former Patriot and Cowboy Beat Rider. I want to talk about Cam Newton last night. Listen. I mean, that was not a good look. Biggest play of the game, they hiked it to McCaffrey. Accuracy issues are not even, they're not debatable anymore.
Starting point is 00:32:20 He has lost eight straight starts, no touchdown passes, and I think they actually have some nice wide receiver. I think DJ Moore. What do you make of Cam right now? owner does not care about his MVP season. Okay, he doesn't care. What's the future of Cam? What do you, what's the comp here? I mean, I think lots of people's jobs are on the line now, you know, in Carolina. I mean, it is new ownership so we don't know what David Tepper is going to do after the year. So there are going to be a lot of people who are going to be fighting their job, fighting for their jobs there. Of course, Cam Newton, um, 2020 is a contract year for him.
Starting point is 00:32:54 And they didn't redo his contract this off season. So, I mean, I think it's fair to ask questions about everybody's future there. As for Cam Newton, um, 2000. I mean, um, 20, specifically. One thing I can tell you, you know, the coaches looked at coming out of last night, they need to be more consistently accurate. And that really is the issue. There were throws he made last night where you said, okay, like there's progress there. It's just the consistency has been an issue his whole career. The consistency is still an issue. Like you said, they've got some skill position talent around him now and McCaffrey, Curtis Samuel, DJ Moore. And so, you know, I think what you're looking for specifically right now and what the coaches are looking for,
Starting point is 00:33:30 specifically is consistency of accuracy. One thing I would mention, we were asking the same questions about Andrew Luck the first month of last season, right? And Andrew Luck went through an almost identical process as Cam Newton coming back. Their injuries aren't identical, but they went through an identical process. They both had shoulder surgery. They both decided, okay, this is the time when I want to rework my delivery. They both went to work with Tom House.
Starting point is 00:33:52 And if you remember, there were lots of questions about Andrew Luck, the first four to six weeks of last season. and then because he had gotten the reps with a rework delivery, he really started to turn a corner in October. And so I'm not going to sugarcoat it, not good signs to the first two weeks for Cam Newton. I would just say we should take some patience with Cam here, maybe wait until mid to late October, see some of the changes that he made in the offseason take. Dak Prescott was absolutely amazing.
Starting point is 00:34:20 I had Greg CoSell on, my kind of film analyst I use a lot. And he came out and he was blunt. He goes, I don't know what to make of it. He goes, you know, giant defenders were not close on a dozen throws. Pat Schumer's a good coordinator. Maybe he's not a good coach. What was the talk with your sources around the league on DAC? I mean, listen, Randall Cobb's good.
Starting point is 00:34:43 Michael Gallops better. O-line is healthy. I think Dallas just has better weapons than we realized. What did you make of it? It's not just that. I mean, you know, I would say there was a lot of talk about Dag Prescott, but there was an equal amount of talk about Kellan Moore. the new offensive coordinator there.
Starting point is 00:34:58 And if you've been talking to Cowboys people over the last two or three months, there's been this quiet confidence about what Callan Moore is going to bring to the offense and how innovative he's been. Now, he's an internal promotion, of course. He was the quarterback's coach there last year. He was actually the backup quarterback to Prescott two years ago. But he's brought a lot of new scheme stuff to that offense that's very specific to what DAC does well.
Starting point is 00:35:21 He has a spread offense background. He played for Chris Peterson at Boise State. And so I think really what this offseason has been about for the Cowboys, getting Kellyn Moore in place and building an offense that works for Dak Prescott. One thing that was pointed out to me, it's really interesting about the way they're doing it now. Three of Dak Prescott's four touchdown passes came off of play action and we're either on first or second down. It sort of illustrates how Kellan Moore is mirroring the run game to the past game and how that really reflects what Dak Prescott's always done well going back to Mississippi State. So I think this is as much about a rising young coach and Kellyn Moore, who the Cowboys have a ton of confidence in and what that might mean for Dag Prescott going forward.
Starting point is 00:36:02 A fascinating game, Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson. Lamar was stupendous last week. But again, it's Miami. Whatevs. Kyler Murray was very good late in that tempo offense when Detroit looked a little gas. Yeah. Going to be a very interesting matchup. What are people saying about Kyler?
Starting point is 00:36:21 Do you take the first three quarters or the last quarter? What do you make of it? Yeah, I mean, I, you know, having talked to some people in the Cardinal building on Sunday night and Monday, one of the things they really liked is exactly what you saw, which was a lot of things went wrong for him. A lot of things went wrong for the offense. I think there was an adjustment for Cliff, to be honest with you, and calling an NFL game the first couple of quarters. And what they really liked and what they saw from Kyler was just how he kept his head about him. That was the most important thing was where a lot of, where a lot of, where a lot of,
Starting point is 00:36:51 other rookies things go haywire on you like that maybe you just figure it's not your afternoon kiler just kept swinging at the end of the game i think you saw him making real nfl throws which is very very encouraging in fact one thing that i think impressed everyone in the cardinal building was you know when he's under the gun the pressure's on to make that throw in overtime to larry fitzgerald on that corner route i mean just spectacular and i think it really illustrated to people what they've seen in Kyler over the course of the last five months, which is that nothing seems to be too big for him. Good stuff. Albert Breer, Patriots Cowboys in his rearview mirror as a beat reporter. Now he's the lead content guy, the Monday morning quarterback. Albert, we love having you on. Thanks,
Starting point is 00:37:33 bud. All right. Thanks, Colin. You bet. The power of cool, the power of celebrity, the power of handsome or beautiful blinds us. It's understandable, but we have to fight against it. And I saw that last night. That coming up. Listen, there's a lot of underwear brands out there, but 75% of people, men and women, are not happy with
Starting point is 00:38:00 dissatisfied with their current underwear. My hunch, they haven't tried Tommy John. Over a million lives have been changed by Tommy John. Most comfortable underwear on the planet. In fact, the number of pairs of Tommy John underwear
Starting point is 00:38:16 that have been sold over 7,000, million, 96% of their customer ratings, four stars are higher. More than just underwear. 750 products online. My favorites, the loungeware, very soft loungewear. They have apparel, polo shirts. They have stores now. They have over 1,200 retail locations, including Nordstrom stores nationwide.

Starting point is 00:39:12 End of the promo code C-O-L-I-N. I have watched this in politics. I have watched this in entertainment. I have watched this in sports. Celebrity is an incredibly powerful thing. Good looking, handsome, cool. We get blinded by it. We can't see straight.
Starting point is 00:39:36 Salesmanship. We got a guy in the White House can sometimes just make stuff up, but he's a celebrity. We punish people who aren't cool. Tom Brady is the best quarterback and the best football player have ever seen. Half of you think he's a system quarterback. Freddie's not cool. Steph Curry, only unanimous MVP, the greatest shooter and ball handler of my life.
Starting point is 00:39:59 All I hear is critics. Players don't even like him because he's not cool. He's not fashionable. Cool blinds us. Celebrity blinds us. Beautiful blinds us. Handsome blinds us. And Dak, Peyton Manning.
Starting point is 00:40:18 Russell Wilson. They're not cool. And so they've got unbelievable critics, despite all they do is win. All Dak does is win. All Curry does is win. All Brady does is win. But there's Cam Newton and Russell Westbrook.
Starting point is 00:40:34 And when you're fashionable and cool and handsome, it blinds us. Proof has no value. It has no value. Cam Newton can't throw the ball accurately. He's a quarterback. He's lost eight straight starts. Four straight games without a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:40:58 With two good receivers and a star running back. People can't see it. They're blinded by it. Russell Westbrook can't shoot. There's never been a player in NBA history. First seven years can't shoot. Year eight, brilliant. Russell can't shoot.
Starting point is 00:41:11 The league is moved away from Cam. It's now a precision league. The league is moved away from Westbrook. Guards got to hit threes. or you're very little value. You have to hit threes. Westbrook not only doesn't, he's awful. He's a worse in the league.
Starting point is 00:41:23 But they're both fashionable and cool and kind of iconic and hip. They are the ultimate celebrity. I mean, Cam is the ultimate celebrity quarterback. Russell Westbrook's the ultimate celebrity guard. They don't win. They're marginally consistent. They can't do the one thing their sport demands, shooting or throwing the ball accurately.
Starting point is 00:41:44 But this is the way we are. More NBA players like Westbrook than Steph Curry. Explain that. One wins. One's the best shooter in a shooters league. Okay. More players in this league like Cam than Dak. I mean, why?
Starting point is 00:42:02 Because Dak's not worried about being cool. And I've seen it my entire life. I mean, for years and years, Westbrook doesn't have enough help and a Cam doesn't have enough help. Oh, good God, stop. It's not a help issue. By the way, Oklahoma City. finally decided to move off Westbrook. Okay, Westbrook showed him who he was enough,
Starting point is 00:42:21 and they finally said, okay, we give up. We're moving off Westbrook. Mike, question with Carolina, what more do you need to see? You're not winning. I mean, you can't, you haven't had back-to-back winning seasons. If you go 0-2 in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:42:34 your chances of making a playoff is 12%. If you go 0-2 at home, I looked it up, I couldn't find it this morning. I think it may be 0%. I don't know if anybody's ever made the playoffs, I've o'-and-2 at home. I'm sure somebody has. But it really is.
Starting point is 00:42:51 And I've been saying with both for Westbrook for years. I'm like, folks, they can't shoot. It's a shooters league. LeBron James, like nine years ago is like, I'm going to move from my freight train game into a shooting game. I've been saying it for years for Cam, folks. I mean, he literally walks to the line, whatever plays called, he's not going to audible out of it,
Starting point is 00:43:09 and he can't throw the ball accurately. I don't know what everybody's watching. It's not like I'm a genius here. I was right on Westbrook. I'm right on Cam. I mean, last night was a prime example. I don't know what everybody else is looking at. I'm not trying to, I'm not a hater if I'm right.
Starting point is 00:43:20 I'm a hater if I'm wrong. So, and I, you know, I mean, Cam, listen, to Cam's credit, and Westbrook's done this as well, you know, Westbrook does take some ownership for some of his problems, and Cam last night took some ownership for it. Through my lens, you know, it's hard to look defensive guys in their eyes after a game like this, you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, offensively, we don't hold up by any of the bargain.
Starting point is 00:43:45 I have to be better. No matter what physical condition I'm in, no matter what foot, shoulder. I ain't get the job done tonight, man. And it's frustrating. I wish I could say something other than that. It's time for me to look myself in the mirror and, you know, do some real soul searching because I had opportunities tonight and I didn't get it down. Hey, you know, like that part.
Starting point is 00:44:09 I mean, I like that part. He's taking ownership. But it is amazing. I mean, I think Ronald Reagan had this as a president. Trump's got it. Maybe Obama had it. When you are, it's the handsome, it's the cool, it's the celebrity. I always said this about Michael Jordan.
Starting point is 00:44:22 Michael Jordan's the best basketball player. Michael, LeBron, and Magic. Kobe's not far back. You know, the best basketball players I've ever seen. Very early on in Michael's career, Nike did a fantastic, Mars Blackman Spike Lee, did a fantastic campaign. Be like Mike. I want to be like Mike.
Starting point is 00:44:41 And it created this kind of bullet. proof shield around Michael Jordan. I mean, he got divorced, there was gambling, he quit the sport twice, he punched teammates. It didn't matter. Michael was, and I've said this, when LeBron retires, he will not be nearly as popular 10 years later as Michael Jordan is. Michael Jordan was voted the most popular NBA player 12 years after he retired. That it doesn't even make sense. I mean, we all love Peyton Manning.
Starting point is 00:45:12 he left. We're into Brady and Rogers and Mahomes. We moved on real fast. I mean, Brett Farv, we love Brett Farv. Ranglers. Everybody loved Brett Farv. About two years out of the league, we're like, we got out of a bunch of our guys we like.
Starting point is 00:45:26 Michael left the league a decade later with all these great NBA players. There was Shaq and there was Kobe and everybody's like, Michael's my favorite player. So, and one of the reasons I've always thought this is Michael got this, Michael Jordan got this incredible Nike campaign. early in his career and combine that with the winning, and it's just like, be like Mike. We were all robotic.
Starting point is 00:45:49 And he was handsome. And he was, I mean, Michael's the coolest basketball player ever. Like Michael wasn't. Michael didn't try to be cool. Michael was cool. The earrings, the suits, the look, the smile, the handsome, the style. Cool, man. When you combine cool with great, forget it.
Starting point is 00:46:04 I mean, those arrows just, bing, bang, bang, bang, they bounce off you. I mean, there's gambling rumors about Michael Jordan. He quit, retired, went in baseball, disaster, punched. team A. Nothing. LeBron came into this league. He didn't get a great ad campaign early. He didn't. There were other stars in this league. Nike had other people. And LeBron's never been quite as cool. He's great. But, you know, his style, it's just, you know, Michael was the hands, the elegance, the hangin, the tongue, the winning, the stuff. LeBron's just great. He's the world's best Swiss Army knife. He does everything really well. But he wasn't as cool. He was just great. So, and I just, I see this time and time again, the power of personality, of cool, of handsome, of stylish. It just, it blinds all of us. I try not to be blinded by it. You know what's cool to me?
Starting point is 00:46:56 Winning. Dak wins. Steph wins. Brady wins. Breeze wins. Gough wins. I like winning. Winning's cool to me.

Starting point is 00:51:10 I'm staying away from it. Joy Taylor is joining me. on a Friday. We have Urban Meyer next hour. We have Jeff Schwartz, who lives in Carolina, has been a cam detractor for years and takes a lot of heat, former Pro Bowl offensive lineman. Joy, how are you? I'm great. Good morning. Good morning, everybody. So, Dak Prescott was amazing for the Cowboys last week. We had Greg Co. Cell on. He's kind of my NFL film guy. I bring him on last five, six years. And he just cuts to the chase. He doesn't, you know, he's not rooting against her for anybody. He'll just tell you what the film says. And I said, man,
Starting point is 00:51:43 that was amazing against the Giants, right? And here's what Greg said. Giants defense was so bad. I really don't know what to say. And receivers, he made a couple of really good throws, but I don't know what to say, Colin, beyond that. Because I've been watching tape since 1991. I've seen an awful lot.
Starting point is 00:52:04 You know, now with social media, you get a lot of young kids who are 28, 29, who are writing and they see things, and they go, oh, my God, I've never seen that before. And then I watch their Twitter feed. I go, I've been seeing this for 30 years. So I don't know what to do. say in response to quarterback hitting wide open receivers.
Starting point is 00:52:20 So he just had a perfect passer rating and our film guy's like, but here's where DAC is special. And numbers do occasionally lie. Who do you play? What's the coordinator? There are a handful of jobs in America.
Starting point is 00:52:38 Kentucky basketball coach, Notre Dame football coach, best Yankee, best Laker, and Dallas Cowboy quarterback. It's noisier. It's harder. There's more coverage.
Starting point is 00:52:52 I mean, DeAngelo Russell was the best Laker player for a year. He couldn't handle it. He couldn't handle it. Last year, I thought LeBron was distracted. Kobe could handle it. Magic could handle it. Kareem could handle it. By the way, Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge, perfect.
Starting point is 00:53:09 Arod, not always well done. It's hard to be the Kentucky basketball coach. It's hard to be the best Laker Yankee. It's hard to be Notre Dame's football coach. Brian Kelly, all he does is win. He still gets crap, and it's really hard to be the cowboy quarterback. And Dak off the best game of his career statistically. Here's where he always gets a perfect rating with the mic in front of him.
Starting point is 00:53:35 You move forward. Simple as that. You move forward. You get back to what you know, get back to the work in the dirt, as they say. You can't sit back and hang your hat on something like that or hang your hat on one game. It was a good performance for us to go out there and do that in the passing game. And just obviously win that game the way we did. But it's about turning the page.
Starting point is 00:53:55 And I definitely save myself and this team's done that. Great. No, he used good. We, he used us. Talk about it. Turn the page. Four quarterbacks in my life have aced the job as cowboy quarterback. Roger Staubach served in the Navy.
Starting point is 00:54:14 Romo and Aikman, both great broadcasters, verbal guys, and Dak so far has aced it. It's just different being Kentucky's basketball coach. It's just different. It's just different being the best Yankee or the best Laker. It's different being Notre Dame's coach. You've got to do more than win. I mean, they didn't like the way Brian Kelly looked on the sideline. I mean, every other place is like, oh, we won 11 games.
Starting point is 00:54:35 Great. He looks like he's yelling at people. You know, he's not Notre Dame. We had the Regions talk to him. Things are not going. It's tougher. And I think Dak just, he just hits it out of the park. He just gets it.
Starting point is 00:54:47 There's a lot of chaos and a lot of noise and a talkative owner and just judicial issues, other players, just he's great at it. All right. So, you know, generally in Blazing Five, my rule, if you follow me do this for 10 years, I like underdogs. Everybody likes favorites. Fans bet favorites. But I have, through the years, I like points.
Starting point is 00:55:10 And I don't know why everybody doesn't like points. But occasionally, very rarely, it's a week where I like the numbers and I like some favorites. So I'm going against my belief system here. But I like my picks. Here's my Blazing Five. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. Fire it up.
Starting point is 00:55:30 It's Collins. Blazing Five. Seahawks at Steelers. I'm going to take the Steelers minus three and a half. I have a rule. When you're a competent team, And you are humiliated on national TV, Sunday night, Monday night, you will rebound very quickly. Pittsburgh was humiliated.
Starting point is 00:55:52 They'll play great. They're at home or they're a better team. It's also Brady. He's eating Pittsburgh alive. Seattle gave up 418 yards to Andy Dalton. Andy Dalton in one of the worst offensive lines in football ate Seattle alive, and they didn't have AJ Green. And Seattle's offense only had 230 years. yards against the defense that was last in the league. Seattle is young. They are a work in progress.
Starting point is 00:56:18 I'm going to take the Steelers here. Swallow the points. Twenty-eight, 21. Bills and Giants. I got to tell you, Buffalo's coaching staff is fantastic. It's very rare in the NFL when you have a great coaching staff and a losing record. They are rebuilding, okay? I think New York, Pat Schumer, is a great coordinator. I don't think he's a good head coach. I mean, what was New York's defense last week? That was embarrassing. The Bill's defense held the Jets to 3.4 yards of play.
Starting point is 00:56:52 That's with Labian Bell. That's with an improved offensive line. That's on the road. That was number one in the NFL. Okay? That beat the Bears, the Packers, and the Ravens defenses. John Brown, 123 receiving yards in week one. I got to tell you, are we sure that Eli?
Starting point is 00:57:11 I know he's not better than Josh Allen athletically. Are we sure Eli is better than Josh Allen right now? By the way, yes, it's a road game for Buffalo, but they're going back to the same stadium. You know, it's Buffalo to New York, same stadium. I'm going to swallow the two points here. And I'm going to
Starting point is 00:57:27 take Buffalo to win a 28 to 23. Bears at Broncos. Now I'm taking points. I'm going to take Denver plus two and a half. Vic Fangio, Denver head coach, last couple of years was Chicago. Hago's defensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:57:43 He faced Mitch Trubisky every day at practice. He knows what he can do, and he knows what he can't do. By the way, Denver's got two great pass rushers, no sacks against Oakland. They'll be spicy. The Broncos haven't started 0-and-2 since 1999, longest streak in the league. They are 51, 8, and 2 in September in home game since 1970. They've won 17 of 18 home openers. And by the way, Mitch Trubisky, we know he struggles.
Starting point is 00:58:09 on the road, it is worse. Eight touchdowns, nine picks in his lap. Broncos, by the way, have won 20 straight week two home games. Trebisky's, you struggle with him at home. Worse on the road in his career. I'm going to take the points. Broncos with the upset 2420. Saints at Rams.
Starting point is 00:58:32 This number's come down. Now I really like it. It's Rams minus 2.5 at some places it's Rams minus 2. Like it. I love it. First of all, New Orleans, their reputation is amazing. But do you know they're 0 and 6 against the spread in their last six games? Betters are betting them like they're the Saints from week three last year.
Starting point is 00:58:55 Their last six, seven games, they are not the same football team. And Deshaun Watson ate them alive. By the way, last year the Saints lost to the Rams at home without Cooper Cup and really without Todd Gurley. both back. And Jared Goff is a different quarterback at home. He is more comfortable. Last year, 342 yards a game at home, 7 and 1, 22 touchdowns and three picks. I like this number here. I'm betting the number here. I think it could be a very competitive game, but minus two, minus two and a half, Rams win 3126. Eagles at Falcons. I'm going to take more points here. Now, I like Philadelphia a lot, but they're not going 16 and 0, and I think they're
Starting point is 00:59:40 vulnerable here. I'm going to take Atlanta at home plus two. First of all, Matt Ryan, last year at home, and I think they've upgraded offensive coordinator, was special. Matt's a better home quarterback than a road quarterback, and most are. Jared Gough is. There's no problem with that. Also, Malik Jackson, a very good defensive lineman for the Eagles out for the year. Here's what's interesting. I love Carson Wentz. He has struggled away from Philly. He's at 8 and 12 on the road. His complete percentage plummets and his passer ratings in the mid-80s. Again, Philadelphia is the better team. But Atlanta was humiliated.
Starting point is 01:00:22 Week one, home opener in the dome. Malik Jackson out. I'm going to take the upset here. Falcons win 2724. All of our odds provided by Foxbet. There you go. right there. So again, I'm going to take a couple of favorites,
Starting point is 01:00:45 the Steelers minus three and a half, the Bills minus two, watch their defense this weekend. Then I'm going to take the Broncos plus points, the Falcons plus points, and I'm going to, what was the other one I swallowed them on? You took that away too fast from me.
Starting point is 01:01:01 The Rams? Rams. You know, there's a saying, you bet numbers not teams. That ram number was like three and a half to three. It's like two and a half two. That's a very good number now to be on for the Rams. You bet numbers.
Starting point is 01:01:15 You don't bet players and teams. You bet numbers. It's a great number to bet the Rams. And it's coming down. All right. Coming up next, Jeff Schwartz. T.J. Hushman Zata this hour on a Friday, Urban Myers, coming up next hour. A few things in life can change your outlook for the entire day,

Starting point is 01:06:15 You know New York well, by the way. I have this theory on OBJ, and I'll just throw my theory at you, that every player, you get a schedule, every coach, every coordinator, every play circles a couple games. You want to get back at the guy who cut you, the guy who fired you, your ex. And OBJ looked at that schedule, and he's like, New York, okay? The watch thing, I think, was planned.
Starting point is 01:06:39 Then he goes out and hammers Greg Williams. And then ask him about Greg Williams. I think he wants to say, I'm the only game. I'm coming back to my city. I didn't want to go to Cleveland. That's what it feels like to me. I thought the Greg Williams comments in the watch, they feel like they're orchestrated to me.
Starting point is 01:06:55 They don't feel random. Your thoughts? Well, they're playing the Jets in MetLife. Like, it's a totally different fan base that he's playing in front of. I know it's in the same city, but I've never gone this. This has been something that's been talked about since the schedule came out, that, hey, he's going back home. I guess he's in the vicinity of where he used to play, but they're not playing the Giants. The Greg Williams comments, I don't know why he made them.
Starting point is 01:07:19 Look, defensive coordinators are always going to tell their guys to go out and hit players hard. Nothing's going to really change on that. You know, Odell knows he's got a target on his back at all times. Now he has, you know, now he's wearing the watch. You know, he's even more of a target. I've never really bought this idea that he should treat this game. as a coming home because it's a different team, a different stadium set up. He's not playing the Giants.
Starting point is 01:07:42 What does it matter? The Giants owners are not sitting in the box. Like no one from the Giants is watching him play this game. Do you believe Greg Williams, he said, went out to hurt him. You've been in these locker rooms. I mean, Greg Williams is loud, verbose, confrontational. I mean, I'm not shocked by it. Do you believe OBJ's comments?
Starting point is 01:08:01 I believe him. Look, there are coaches, old school coaches. there are players that do go out to actually hurt guys. They really do. I've never been that type of guy. I wanted to play physical, but I was never going to go out and hurt you. I've had an offensive line coach basically tell us that he wanted us to go hurt defenders. Like, yes, coaches do talk like that, especially the older coaches.
Starting point is 01:08:22 But again, it's up to the players to go out and try, quote, quote, try to hurt some guys. It's hard to do. And look, that play right there. I mean, look, does he hit Odell high and give him a concussion or hurt his leg? I don't know if he's going out of his way to break his ankle on that play. I think he's just trying to hit him hard and ended up hurting him. You know, I broke my leg three times. It sucks.
Starting point is 01:08:43 I get it. But I don't think that people are going out of their way to hurt him as much as he thinks they are. Antonio Brown debuts my theory on this is Belichick cannot stop Andy Reid. He can't stop his disciples. Doug Peterson. Matt Nagy had 31 against him. He can't stop Andy Reid, who's averaged 35 a game in the last five times he's faced Belichick. and the reason they went and got AB because I don't think they need him.
Starting point is 01:09:07 They're like, listen, I can't stop Andy Reid. The last two times I played Andy with Mahomes, I really can't stop him. I think Kansas City had some impact here on the AB acquisition. How much do you think he plays against Miami? I think he plays a lot. It's a great opportunity for him to really get in rhythm of the office, especially against a really bad defense like the Dolphins. Just get him a couple go routes, a couple screens,
Starting point is 01:09:29 just give him some easy completions, get him working in the rhythm with Tom Brady. And I agree with you generally speaking about adding to the offense, right? He knows he's got to score points in this league. But this is a cheap deal. I know everyone says, well, it's $10 million guaranteed. Yeah, but it's not a lot of money. If he ends up, you know, being put on an exempt list or something else comes out and whatnot, then they're just, they won't pay him and they'll cut him and be done with it.
Starting point is 01:09:51 So I think it's a really great risk for them to take, but it's a great reward as well. Because if he is good, they're going to be unstoppable on offense. We saw them in week one against Pittsburgh, no grok, no pro. problem. Offensive line's still good. They kind of have reinvented their offense going, I think, two running backs about 20% of the time, adding a fullback, of course. And Antonio Brown just adds another layer to this offense. And I love that they went ahead and got him. He's cheap. Go ahead and do it. Dak Prescott, a lot of people think it's a mirage. I do think Pat Shermer is a coordinator, not a head coach. The defense looked undisciplined and unprepared. They're not overly talented, but that was embarrassing.
Starting point is 01:10:30 But I buy into DAC. I haven't always bought into DAC, but last year he was seven and one in his last eight, and I think he's an ascending player. I actually think he's getting better. What say you? Well, the things I loved about the performance from week one was the philosophy be on offense. You know, Kellan Moore definitely has changed the identity of this offense. It's now run through DAC and not run through Zeeke. Play Action Pass is a huge success in the NFL.
Starting point is 01:10:57 They ran 15 of them. He was 14 to 15. Yes, the Giants blew a bunch of coverages. I get that. But part of that was just set up that one you're showing right there because the backside safety had to look, had to eye the left guard. Left guard pulled. He stepped in a second. They hit the tight end behind him. Just good quality plays being set up. They're in rhythm. They RPO them. They used Dax's legs in third down situations, which I was begging them to do more of last year. And we always talked about what have Dack Prescott got an aggressive offensive coordinator that catered to what he does best, which is what they came out with on Sunday. And he got that guy. They have speed all over the field where Cooper and Cobb and Jarlwyn can run. And they just set up
Starting point is 01:11:38 an offense that looks like it fits that Prescott. And I am excited to watch him in this offense going forward. You've been very critical of Cam Newton. I talked about earlier that celebrity, handsome, fashionable, cool can blind us. I mean, Michael Jordan had his flaws, but he was good looking and fashionable and cool. And we just didn't care that he punched teammates.
Starting point is 01:11:57 We didn't care that he quit. We didn't care. You know, we didn't care about any of his problems. The gambling rumors. He was Michael. He was cool. Ronald Reagan was a Teflon president. Handsome, cool. We loved Ronald. And I look at Cam, and I see Westbrook, where he's fashionable, handsome,
Starting point is 01:12:13 cool, wildly athletic, and there's a shield around him that his fans, proof is of no value, people still love him. But I thought last night's the kind of game that an owner upstairs in the box watches and thinks, what am I doing? Like, you know, OKC bailed finally on Westbrook. I mean, do you think they'd stay in the Cam business? Well, there's one thing the offense can do to really get Cam going, and that's to run him again. You know, we've seen that Cam is an emotional player.
Starting point is 01:12:39 He's one of the only quarterbacks to argue that actually thrives off being emotional. And that happens when he runs the football. When he uses his legs to get the offense going, he is a better overall pocket passer. Just generally speaking, he is better when he is fired up like that. The problem is he's kind of beat up. And they decide to go away from that being part of their offense. And I get it, right? You have a guy that's coming off a foot injury right now and a shoulder surgery.
Starting point is 01:13:05 But if they decide to go back to that being a little bit more of their offense, I think they have a chance to salvage the season. Now, will they do it? I don't know, but talking about the owner and what they're going to do. Look, if they don't win this year, everyone's gone. Coach Rivera, who I think he's a fabulous coach, he'll find a job the day after he's fired, he's gone, Herni's gone, Cam Noon's gone, because a new coach is not tying his wagon to Cam Noon.
Starting point is 01:13:27 I think Cam Noon is going to be the next Andrew Locke. I think that if the Panthers are to move on from this year, he's probably done, where's he going to go play? He's tied himself to this offense to Charlotte, and they can't salvage the offense. I don't know if Cam's body can do it. That's great stuff. Jeff Schwartz, co-author of Eat My Schwartz, and I love having him on the show. Congrats, buddy, on all your success. We'll talk soon. Yeah, sounds good.
Starting point is 01:13:52 You know, he makes an interesting point there on the Andrew Luck thing, is that, you know, one of the criticisms of luck, whether it's fair or not, I heard it a lot. Is Andrew Luck, like, obsessed with football? You know, his off-seasons, he did a lot of traveling globally. Maybe he wasn't. Is Cam obsessed? obsessed with football. And, by the way, you're probably a healthier person if you're not obsessed. But Kobe Bryant was obsessed with basketball. I mean, obsessed with it. Most of the great athletes of my time, Peyton Manning, they're kind of myopic.
Starting point is 01:14:32 Now, Peyton's very funny. He'll do other things. Kobe has shifted his obsessiveness into teaching and coaching. But, you know, when you, I always joke about this, when you look up what makes people happy, it's helping others, it's being in love. Balance is never in that list. It's fun to be all in on something or somebody. That's really fun. And it makes me very, very happy when you're wildly in love with a person or with your sport.
Starting point is 01:15:02 And I never felt like Andrew Luck was completely defined by football. So when he was in pain, he's like, I'm out. I don't think Cam's completely defined by it either. I think he's got lots of interest. And I think Jeff hits on it here. The one thing I've heard from players in that locker room, Cam plays hurt a lot. Like Cam's pain tolerance is he and Andrew Luck are hurt every Sunday.
Starting point is 01:15:30 And Cam never complains about it. He plays hurt. And players really respect him about that. But if you told me, if I told you Cam, like retired after the year. He got hurt week 14. Wouldn't be shocked? I mean Kobe, two ugly injuries.
Starting point is 01:15:46 Like, I'm coming back. Kobe, you got the rings, you got the, I'm coming back. Sometimes myopia serves athletes well. I never thought luck at it. I don't feel Cam has it. And I think it's not a shock if Cam said after a while, this isn't any fun for me. I got her stuff I want to do and I hurt.
Starting point is 01:16:05 Joy with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So Nick Saban has complained about student attendance at games, particularly the fact that students leave early or don't show up for non-conference games like New Mexico State, which Bama won 62 to 10 in a thriller. Down to the last second there. Alabama has a plan, though, to keep students inside the stadium.
Starting point is 01:16:29 They are having students install a version of the app fan maker, which tracks their location while inside the stadium. What? According to New York Times, the Tide Loyalty Points Program works like this. Students who typically pay about $10 for home tickets, download the app and earn 100 points for attending a home game. And an additional $250 for staying until the fourth quarter. If they leave the game early, the app knows, and it won't award them loyalty points needed for perks like college football. They'll take it.
Starting point is 01:16:59 So you're blaming the kids instead of scheduling a team. By the way, this whole thing about Nick Sabin, we'll play anybody. No, you won't. If they're north of Atlanta, you won't play him out of conference. If they're west of Dallas, no thanks. This is a bunch of hooey. Nick controls every out-of-conference game for a year. He totally controls four games a year.
Starting point is 01:17:18 And this whole thing, nobody will play us. When Pete Carroll was dominating the SEC, the Pac-12, and they were crushing people. He got games every year with Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Texas. Nobody does. This is a bunch of hooey. By the way, I just saw Clemson. Clemson played Texas A&M.
Starting point is 01:17:35 why would you want to play Clemson? Who wants to play Clemson? They're playing South Carolina. They're playing Texas, San Am. Don't tell me everybody's ducking. People will play Alabama, but Alabama's got to be willing to go north. By the way, who would want to play Georgia? Notre Dame is.
Starting point is 01:17:50 By the way, I wouldn't want to play LSU. Wisconsin did. Nobody wants to play these Southern teams, but they will, LSU is willing to go and play in Packer Stadium. Well, the rest of their home games are Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU, and WCU. There's other factors to this as well. Like, it's just, there's ways to beat the app, by the way.
Starting point is 01:18:13 Like, if your phone is still in the stadium, obviously, it's going to know. So give it to your girlfriend and then go. Yeah, I mean, they're going to make all the freshmen stay there with their phones. I don't even think it's that deep. That's pretty devious. There's, I mean, it's ways around the system. But to me, it's bigger than that. Like, there's a lot of factors that go into this.
Starting point is 01:18:31 One, obviously, I mean, I don't. I don't want to sit through a 62 to 10 game against New Mexico State. In August, in the south, it's 109 in the stadium? Kids just don't have the attention span for something like that. Like, if it's a great game, cool. But if not, I can go party. I know how this is going to end. Like, I can go be somewhere else and have fun and follow the game on my phone.
Starting point is 01:18:55 There was a time where the only way you were going to get that game was literally being in your house or being at the game. And that's not the case anymore. So you have to factor those things in. Schedule better teams. Yeah, and if you want that home environment, schedule better teams. There's a solve for this. All right, so the Saints and the Rams face off Sunday for the first time since last year's controversial pass interference, no call. And Saints fans and players have been fixated pretty much the entire city on that call since it happens.
Starting point is 01:19:23 And Drew Brees was asked if he has forgotten about the non-call and the loss of the Rams. Still, I haven't. Never will. but when you say forgotten about it I mean you know you have to you have to find a way to compartmentalize it to the point where you know you can move on in a positive way and so I found a way to do that but as far as just you know the events you know you live and learn and uh you know sometimes things don't go your way and you got to find a way to come out better on the other side let it go Let it go.
Starting point is 01:19:58 I can't take another second of hearing about this call. I can't wait until this game is over, and then hopefully we never speak of it ever again. I'm just over it. By the way, I watched the Carolina game last night. There was a terrible call in that game, which hosed Tampa Bay on a ballmark. I mean, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were like, what?
Starting point is 01:20:17 I mean, everybody got hosed on a call so bad last night on a ballmark. It's life. It happens all the time. I guarantee you every franchise, every franchise and every professional sport, the fan base can think of a call that didn't go their way
Starting point is 01:20:37 that impacted the rest of the season. 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Des caught it. There's so many examples. You're not the only team where the referees missed a blatant call. We all agree with you. And for the most part,
Starting point is 01:20:49 I do think that Drew Brees has been the leader in trying to move forward past it. But it's just, I'm over it. I don't. I just, I'm to the point where I don't even feel bad anymore. No, I'm that's way. I almost want the Rams to win by a blowout.
Starting point is 01:21:02 And I love the Saints and I love New Orleans. I'm over. I'm now rooting against you. We're done. We have all, everyone else has decided we're moving forward. So it's just, let's go. Come join us. Speaking of Des, although he doesn't expect to return to the field until mid-October,
Starting point is 01:21:18 he is drawing interest in the open market. ESPN's Christina Anderson reported that she had spoken to Bryant's trainer, who said some teams have been expressing interest. in the three-time pro bowler. The Saints, Packers, Ravens, and Panthers are the top of Dez's wish list. NFL network analyst Jane Slater shared this back in August on Twitter. She said healthy, moving fast and explosive words receivers coach David Robinson used to describe his workout with Des Bryant.
Starting point is 01:21:44 He's working on his mind, but looks like he's still working on his game too. Red zone target, he's fascinating. I wouldn't want to build around it. But if you told me I could put him in some packages around the goal line, he's a very big receiver. His hands are negotiable, but I could get a team. Like if a team is struggling in the red zone,
Starting point is 01:22:04 they're moving the ball, but they're struggling in the red zone. Or they're having some injury issues. Yeah, I mean, it's more of a receiver league than ever. I get it. No, I mean, I am a little surprised. I think he's been a little stubborn on the teams he'll play for, but you can't, I mean, honest to God,
Starting point is 01:22:17 I mean, the Jets just pick up Demarius Thomas. They just lost a receiver. We're two weeks out from, I mean, it's a receiver quarterback league. league now. So I think he should be in the... I'm surprised he hasn't gotten at least more interest. Well, I think once he's 100% healthy, that I think he'll end up on a squad.
Starting point is 01:22:34 Because there's always a market for top talent or even perceived talent that, I mean, Des is proven, obviously, he's had some injury issues, and that's why he's been out. But there's always a market out there, and I do think he'll end up on a team. I'd like to see Des back on a team, because I don't like the idea of Des' career ending
Starting point is 01:22:51 with that. You know, like the Cowboys didn't end well, and then you see him with the same. since like instant injury. You see, this guy's career. I mean, you talk about we moved on fast. I mean, he retired. He just disappeared from the radar. I mean, he did retire.
Starting point is 01:23:04 He just kind of disappeared. T.O. retired. We talked about him for three years. Randy Moss. This guy retired an hour later. But to his credit, he's kind of been, I don't want to say comfortable in his, not disappearance, but he hasn't been out there like that. And Des is a big personality.
Starting point is 01:23:20 So I just want to see Des and his career on a high note. Yeah. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. I want to say this about the Rams Saints is last night, I think you watched the football game, where the coaching staffs were telling you, they didn't have a lot of trust in their quarterbacks.
Starting point is 01:23:39 Tampa Bay ran the ball 25. One of the running backs had 25 rushes. Peyton Barber rushed the ball 23 times. James only threw it 25. Cam didn't get the ball height to him on the biggest play of the game. Tribiskey. I mean, they wouldn't let him talk this week. Kirk Cousins only through 10 passes.
Starting point is 01:23:56 Marcus Marietta. You can tell the Tennessee staff has real apprehensions about loading Marcus Mariotta up with too many responsibilities. A lot of you think Jared Goff is a system guy. It's really funny. Sean McBey, Sean McBey was talking this week about, like, Goff, they let him do anything they want. Like they think he is leading the system.
Starting point is 01:24:19 He makes the system what it is. So we're able to do the things we are because we have the right trigger man that can really do anything that we ask in terms of changing the launch point. What types of concepts do we want to activate, whether it be play action, the drop-back game, quick, intermediate or down the field? By the way, Goff last week leading through 39 times. And that was leading.
Starting point is 01:24:41 Usually to try to kill the clock. Last year, Goff had over 560 attempts. It was top 10 in the league. Again, leading in about 12 of their games late. So when I watch the Rams, I mean, Chicago, Tennessee, Tampa, Carolina, Minnesota, I see teams that, I mean, Chicago won't let their quarterback talk. Dak, his attempts go up every year. Gough, he threw 560 times. And that was with Gurley for the first eight weeks last year.
Starting point is 01:25:11 So I don't buy into this system stuff for him. I think they let it. He threw 39 times last week leading. Leading. That's a lot of throws trailing. Same with Mahomes. Let him do what he wants to do. They trust him.
Starting point is 01:25:25 T.J. Hushmanzada's around the corner. What's he going to make? He played with Ocho. OBJ, the watch issue. Great slate of games this weekend coming up. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it,
Starting point is 01:28:02 and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:28:18 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 01:28:40 but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 01:29:00 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, the podcast, Clifford Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 01:29:23 What? Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Pro Bowler played 11 years in the NFL and our friend, T.J. Hushmanzada.
Starting point is 01:29:49 I just saw the most depressing thing I've ever seen on the internet. According to a study, one-third of American families eat dinner in silence. My family, my wife, it's a rule. We sit down and she asks every kid, what'd you do today? What'd you learn today? And believe me, some of the answers aren't great. Our kids are trouble. Do your family eat in silence or talk?
Starting point is 01:30:12 No, we're loud. We talk a lot. We're loud at dinner. It's almost like, stop talking so they can eat. Yeah. My wife, that's her rule when we first met. Like, no. No phones, we're talking.
Starting point is 01:30:24 And we go around to every kid in the table. Everybody, what'd you do today? Yeah, we pretty much eat together almost every night and just talk. You know what I, when my wife asks me, what did you do today? You know what I always tell her? Entertained America. That's what I do. Look at Joy rolls her eyes.
Starting point is 01:30:38 All right, I want to start with this. I want to start with this. I said this to start the show, and I believe it. Dax better than Cam. Yeah, I agree with that. This is, me being a receiver. I had an argument with somebody yesterday about this. If I'm a receiver, who would I want to play with?
Starting point is 01:30:58 And I would prefer to play with Dack Prescott over Cam. Because I feel like I can do better. I can get the ball. I'm going to have an opportunity to perform to showcase my skills more with Dac Crescott than Cam Newton. I agree. Like the knock is, here's the thing. think. Does leadership matter? Does accuracy matter? Does production matter? Do you know, do you know that Cam's lost eight straight starts? Now, I'll give him a pass for the last six
Starting point is 01:31:24 of the last year. Everybody knows he was hurt. His shoulder was hurt. He had shoulder surgery. First game, they played pretty well against her last night was awful. You can't be an NFL quarterback and complete less than 50% of your passes. It was raining, but he was, he was inaccurate on a lot of throws. And so that's rough. Are you bother? that on fourth down, biggest play of the season, they hiked it to a running back? I'm not bothered. I wasn't bothered by, you would think Cameroon can get that yard. What I thought, it was the Philly Special play.
Starting point is 01:31:55 Yeah. I don't know how they coached it, but when you watch, the coaching point should have been, stretched a ball, and look for a gap on a cutback because everybody is going to go thinking we're running Philly Special. Stretch it and cut it up. It looked like the coaching point was, let's just try to get on a, perimeter. If he stretches it and cuts it up, it's a touchdown. Yeah, you can watch that and see it again. All right, I got to ask you about something.
Starting point is 01:32:20 So Odell Beckham came out, Monday Night Football, Odell and the Browns in New York. Sam Darnold's got mono. So Odell says, hey, listen, Greg Williams was here in Cleveland last year. These guys are telling me that when we played Odell Beckham, Greg Williams was telling Brown players, go hurt Odell. As honestly as you can, Greg Williams has never been my cup of tea. A little loud for me. A lot of ego here. A little hyper-aggressive. Feels very 1995 to me. Don't know him, but I'm, you know, don't love him. But how often does that happen? Coach telling you, I mean, did you hear it? No, I've never heard a coach tell a player, go hurt him. Now, there's been times where it's been like, we're going to put a hat on him.
Starting point is 01:33:06 We're going to put a hat on him. Yeah, we're going to put a hat on him. We want him to fill us. You would hear the defensive coaches tell the defensive players that make him feel. you every time you hit him. But go hurt him, I've never heard that. And I hope that if a coach told me to go hurt a player, I would look at him like he was crazy. I would never
Starting point is 01:33:25 as an older coach, look at a young player and say you could be friends. I mean, honestly, these days, players are all buddies. It's his livelihood. You're not trying to hurt anybody. You don't, you want to compete against the best. I don't want to win a game
Starting point is 01:33:41 in their best. Not. I out there. Now, if it's a playoff game or a Super Bowl, I take it how I can get it. But a regular season game, you're not trying to purposely hurt any, at least I would hope not. A, B, to the Patriots. I have a theory on this, is that Belichick has struggled with Andy Reed. Last five games, Andy's played Belichick. They've averaged 35 a game regardless of quarterback, 50% on third down. Andy gave Belichick fits in the Super Bowl when he was with Philly. McNabb threw for 360, Westbrook Rush for 100, T.O. was unstoppable. They were nine for 16 on third down. By the way, Andy Reed's
Starting point is 01:34:15 Disciples, Doug Peterson, Eagles, beat Belichick with Nick Foles. Last year, Matt Nagy, Andy Reid Disciple, scored 31 with Mitch Trubisky. I think Belichick knows. Listen, I can't stop Andy. Andy and Patrick Mahalms, forget it. I'm just going to roll the dice and go get A.B. This is going to be interesting. When you were targeted as much as A.B. has been, that's an adjustment.
Starting point is 01:34:41 you go from getting 10, 11, 12, sometimes 15 targets a game. In Pittsburgh? In Pittsburgh. And now it's going to drop to probably six, seven? That's an adjustment. And of those six or seven, how many of them are down the field where you can really impact the game? And he's going to be on his best behavior early on. Yes.
Starting point is 01:35:05 And then your old self just sets in like, man, I need the ball, bro. Like, come on. Well, and he's also. happens. He is also, he's not a great route runner. He tends to be, this is why I never understood him. No, he's a good route runner. He's a good route runner, but he freelances
Starting point is 01:35:21 within his route. And Brady is the quarterback where if you got to come back at 16, BS16, I'm going to hit my fifth step. I might hitch once and I'm let, he freelances. You can't do that with Brady. See, and this is why I think. I think, first of all,
Starting point is 01:35:37 Brady is, tends to be very good with new stuff. He's an revolver, right? And I think Brady having this gift, Brady has not had a speed receiver, I mean like a true star speed receiver for like nine, ten years. So I think Brady initially is going to like A, B, and be very tolerant of mistakes. But my question becomes December 3rd. He throws a pick, AB freelances. I think this works. I think everybody appreciates everybody. I think A.B. will appreciate Tom. I think Tom will appreciate A.B. I think everybody's going to appreciate this. My question is duration. How long before A.B.
Starting point is 01:36:11 He's like, I want the ball. And time's like, dude. See, the thing about this is this. The Patriots, they have a reputation. They got a reputation of like they're the bully. Meaning you go play with the Patriots. You already know what it is. You're not going in there with that stuff you did with the Raiders.
Starting point is 01:36:29 Because the Patriots and Bill Belichick's reputation is, do it if you want to, you're going home. So he already knows everybody across the league, I wouldn't say they're fearful, but they know when they go to the Patriots. Different. It's different. He knows that.
Starting point is 01:36:44 I don't foresee that he's not going to act out. The only problem, if who's going to take a back seat? Julian Edelman's in a slot. He's going to get his looks. Josh Gordon played well. He should continue to get his looks. Philip Dorset may dry up. He's 100% going to be the odd man out.
Starting point is 01:37:02 And if he is the odd man out and AB takes his place, that's not enough for AB. It's not enough. Right. And so. God, can you imagine if Gronk was there? The good news is. is the other thing is New England throws a ton of their running backs. What happens when they say we're going to go run-centric?
Starting point is 01:37:18 The game plan is just the runner ball. And the single receiver, who's it going to be? Is it going to be Edelman? Is it going to be AB if they're getting those type of sets? And so he will adjust because he knows what he's getting himself into. Every player knows you go to New England. It is what it is. But it's going to be very interesting.
Starting point is 01:37:36 By the way, got about a minute left. Dak against the Redskins. He does it again, right? Looks good. effortless? I wouldn't say effortless, but I said it early in the off season. I felt like Kellymour and John Kittner were going to work wonders, thus far they have. Don't know how good the Giants are. But Dak Prescott is good, man. People hate on that Prescott like he's trashed and he's not. That Prescott, he's only going to get better the longer they wait to more expensive it gets.
Starting point is 01:38:05 By the way, Randall Cobb, it's one of those March signings we forgot about. And you watch that game, you're like, oh, hell, they got Randall Cobb. Random Rob can play. Randall Cobb was a quarterback initially at Kentucky. They put him at wide receiver. Randall Cobb can play. TJ, by the way, Fox Sports Radio, Saturday afternoon. From this point forward with a veteran sportscaster Steve Hartman, TJ, great seeing you.
Starting point is 01:38:26 Urban Meyer, hour three and a Friday next. Want more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Oh, we're going to have a tasty last time. hour, maybe the best of the week. This is the herd. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio on FS1. We're live in Los Angeles. Fifteen minutes, Urban Meyer stops by. Can't wait for Urban Meyer.
Starting point is 01:38:57 What's wrong with Michigan? I mean, I'm telling you, folks, I watched that Army game. They could have lost that thing in the big house. What is wrong with Michigan? And I've defended Jim Harbaugh. I've defended Jim Harbaugh for five years. What is wrong with that offense? That was weak. and McIntyre on Fridays, Monday's headlines today. He had his best appearance last week. McIntyre will throw crap out there and you're like
Starting point is 01:39:20 that's absurd. He's right a lot. He is right a lot. Serious XM Channel 83. Of course, Joy Taylor is joining us. Joy, how are you in a Friday? What are you doing this weekend? Just chilling. Just chilling out. I'm going to Vegas tonight to watch a magician. Oh.
Starting point is 01:39:36 I'm going to, here's the magic trick. Here's your paycheck. Now it disappears. I'm going to Vegas tonight. Having some fun in Vegas tonight. Just one night in Vegas, though. Hanging out with my son, watching a magic show, having a great time. A whole weekend in Vegas is. Oh, it's too much.
Starting point is 01:39:50 It's a lot. It's too much. I spent seven years there. A weekend now is good enough. All right. Well, we've got to start because I think it's a real thing. By the way, Joy's got an amazing story in about 30 minutes that's blowing up. Start with Thursday Night game last night.
Starting point is 01:40:04 It was a really disappointing performance for one Cam Newton. If I just asked you, traits, I don't care what guys are drafted. I don't care about TV. If I said, what matters for quarterbacks? Winning, productivity, consistency, leadership, health, focus. Do you really love football? You get this morning that Dak Prescott, who you don't want to pay, is better than Cam Newton in all of those.
Starting point is 01:40:39 winning. Dak has lost. Dak has won, nine of his last 11 starts. Cam's lost eight straight starts. Leadership, health, ascending, focus. Folks, Tampa Bay didn't have a pro bowler on defense last night. Carolina was at home. They had to win. Cam, O for three in the red zone.
Starting point is 01:41:05 Abysmal on third down, three for 14. 24 of 50. couldn't extend drives. Carolina's defense is shot by the fourth quarter. You don't want to pay Dak Prescott, and you keep telling me Cam's a star. Today, DAC is better than Cam. Well, Cald, that is unfair.
Starting point is 01:41:26 Dak has amazing weapons. All right, let's talk about it. Zeke. Well, Cam's got Christian McCaffrey. You don't think he can play? Well, I mean, Jason Whitten. Well, Cam's got Greg Olson. He's better right now than 88-year-old Jason
Starting point is 01:41:40 Well, what about Amari Cooper? What about Curtis Samuel? That guy's got game. Well, what about Michael Gallup, the emerging? Well, what about DJ Moore? Stop. Dak and Cam both have enough weapons. A back, two good receivers, a good tight end.
Starting point is 01:41:59 And both clearly have competent coaches. Ron Revere's gotten to a Super Bowl, won his division. Jason Garrett's won playoff games, won his division. Stop with the nonsense. all you need to know, teams tell you what they think about your quarterback on the biggest plays of the game. The biggest play of the season for the Carolina Panthers and watch who they hike the ball to. Direct snap. They fake the toss. McCaffrey depends where they put it. What a play by Hargraves out on the edge and he did not get it.
Starting point is 01:42:37 Tampa Bay is going to win this game. with that defensive stop. Cam has another touchdown pass in four games. Okay, running quarterbacks, Cam, they work in this league. But as we often say, they don't last. So what you have to do if you're running quarterback, run around for a couple years until the light goes on. It's a very fast NFL game compared to college.
Starting point is 01:42:58 And then Russell Wilson, Steve Young did this to a Hall of Fame level. About year three, the light goes on, and then you can run occasionally, but you are really a pocket quarterback. with mobility. By the way, I'm finding Dack Prescott is running less and passing more. But if you're a running quarterback, it all works. It just doesn't last. Do it for a couple years.
Starting point is 01:43:19 The problem with Cam, Cam has never taken the time to become a pocket quarterback. Cam is too distracted from day one in this league. He's distracted being Cam. He's distracted being cool. He's distracted with his commercials. He's distracted with his fashion. He is never committed to being a great pocket quarterback. I have seen more growth from Lamar Jackson in the last six months that I've seen from Cam in eight years.
Starting point is 01:43:45 So this morning when you question should you pay DAC, DAC is an ascending, winning, increasingly productive, coachable leader at quarterback. Cam is an eroding, marginally productive, arguably uncoachable, semi-healthy, non-winning, depends on the Sunday or moment productive quarterback. And you want Cam over DAC. And you don't want to pay DAC. So, I mean, if you don't want to pay DAC, what are you going to pay Cam? Because I've been listening to this DAC thing for a year.
Starting point is 01:44:25 Those two staffs last night did not trust their quarterbacks. Tampa Bay wants to run the ball, and they don't want to hike the ball to Cam in a big spot. I watch Dallas. Every year, DAC attempts. Up. Productivity. Up. Winning. Up. Trust. Up. I mean, Superman's over. When Superman can't reach over the goal line and get a yard, they won't hike him to it. It's over. Cape off. By the way, if you want to hear Cam after the game, I will say this. He is the most elegantly dressed quarterback. Let's go with ever. Through my lens, you know, it's hard to look defensive guys in their eyes after a game like this, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:45:07 you know, offensively, we don't hold up by any of the bargain. I have to be better. No matter what physical condition I'm in, no matter what foot, shoulder, I ain't get the job done tonight, man. And it's frustrating. I wish I could say something other than that. It's time for me to look myself in the mirror
Starting point is 01:45:25 and, you know, do some real soul searching because I had opportunities tonight and I didn't get it down. Well, his fashion, I will say this, and I'm not a fashion guru. His fashion gets better. His fashion's gotten cooler. The winning, less, fashion, better. That I won't argue.
Starting point is 01:45:41 All right, let's shift to this. This is the way it works in the NFL. Everybody gets their schedule. Coaches, players, a couple circle games there. You know, oh, I'm facing my ex. I'm facing the guy who fired me. Belichick, you know, he loves to face the Jets. He loves to face the Browns.
Starting point is 01:46:00 Yeah, Browns fired him. Ah, he loves to stick it to the Browns. And the Jets offered him the job he wasn't interested. He loves to beat the Jets. You know, everybody's got a guy and ex. So, B.J. grabbed his schedule this year. And that first game, he circled, back in New York, Monday night football. I'm going to have a little homecoming and light those crappy Jets defensive backs up.
Starting point is 01:46:28 So yesterday, unprovoked, nobody brought up Greg Williams. He took a shot at the current. former Brown's interim coach, current Jets defensive coordinator. If I was a coach, I would never teach what he teaches, but that's just him and what he does. So there's no real getting under my skin anymore. I had people who were here when he was here telling us, you know, if you get a chance, take a shot at him. If you can, you know, hurt him. I guarantee he's going to leave the game hurt.
Starting point is 01:46:56 Probably just got to watch out for the cheap shots and the dirty hits and all the things that he likes to teach. That was not random. was saying, I'm going to wear the watch again. Now let me start by saying, I'm not a Greg Williams fan. I think he's loud. There's a lot of ego. There's a reason 16 years in the NFL, nobody's giving him a head job. God, he did a great job for Cleveland last year.
Starting point is 01:47:17 They didn't give him the head job. I think he sometimes can be a little outdated. I don't like his loud coaching style. Not a huge fan. Clearly, he's capable of coaching, but he's not my cup of tea. So some of the claims, he goes out to hurt people. It wouldn't shock me. Number two, though, OBJ has got a plan.
Starting point is 01:47:35 This was a circle game. Back in New York, I'm on stage, I'm going to be a star. And I will tell you, this is going to work for OBJ, I think, this week. I think OBJ is going to go to New York, and he's going to get nine or ten catches, and he's going to have a couple of touchdowns. Because, frankly, the Jets secondary is a mess. Sam Darnold's got mono, meaning they'll use Trevor Simeon, meaning the Jets will have a lot of three-and-outs and five-and-six-play series.
Starting point is 01:47:59 They'll give it back to Baker-Mayfield. Baker will be on a stage. but this was a plan. I'm going to wear the watch again was a plan. Greg Williams, I don't believe in what he teaches, is a plan. OBJ knows what he's doing here. And I think in this instance, for OBJ, it will work. I think it's a great stage.
Starting point is 01:48:17 I think Cleveland's going to win. If I was a gambler, I don't think it's a great bet because I don't know who's planned for the Jets. They got multiple guys sick and hurt. And I mean, Cleveland's offensive line is not good, and the Jets D line is their strength. But I think this is all a plan. The watch is a plan. That was for the stage Monday Night Football.
Starting point is 01:48:36 That was a circle game. I'm going to show the world. You're going to laugh at me for going to Cleveland? I'll show you. And by the way, I get it. We all want to show our X. We upgrade it. I get it.
Starting point is 01:48:45 Don't get me wrong. I've probably done it in my life. A lot of people have done it. But I think this was coordinated. I think OBJ looked at that schedule and thought, New York Jets, Monday Night Football. I'm lighting him up. And this time, I think he will.
Starting point is 01:49:00 I think he'll have a, I don't play fantasy football, I think he will have a very good game on Monday night. By the way, Greg Williams will fire back at O'Dell. Joy will have that. Also, I think it's funny. I just root for mayhem on Twitter. Tim Tebow today basically said, I wasn't paid in college.
Starting point is 01:49:19 Athletes shouldn't be paid. My jersey was worth a fortune. I never made a penny, never wanted it, and the internet's blowing up. I don't agree with Tebow, but I like anything that annoys Twitter. It just makes me laugh. Urban Meyer, his college coach, is right around the corner. What's up with Michigan?
Starting point is 01:49:37 Maybe what's up with Tebow? We'll talk about that. On average, a burglary happens. This is kind of scary. Every 23 seconds in the United States. 83% of burglars admit they specifically look to see if there's an alarm. That's what's crazy because only one in five homes have home security. Start Saturday Strong with Big Noon kickoff as number six Ohio State faces Indiana. Then the Seahawk trophy is up for grabs as Iowa battles Iowa State. And finally, it's a primetime showdown as Jalen Hurtsle's number five, Oklahoma against UCLA. Catch the games on Fox FS1 or the Fox Sports app. State's going to beat Iowa. I'll tell you right now. That Brock Purdy kid, eight and two and ten starts. Watch out. Those games are always close.
Starting point is 01:54:31 Ames, trap game. Means more for Iowa State than Iowa. Watch out. Iowa's missing their best offensive linemen. All right, Urban Myers here, Big Noon kickoff. Okay, my whole life, it feels like LSU's got the best players. Even better than Alabama. They can't pass. That passing's always an issue.
Starting point is 01:54:48 And I watched them last week, and I'm like, you can talk about Clemson and Alabama. I wouldn't want anything to do. This Joe Burrow kid. it's like LSU's a different program. Oh, my Lord. They look better than Clemsons looked this year. Tell me about Joe Burrell.
Starting point is 01:55:04 Did you know your connections to him? Well, first, LSU when I was in the SEC, every time we played them, I remember they'd come out of the tunnel and you'd look and say, how are we going to block these guys? That's the best-looking team. We're one of the best-looking teams. Joe Burrell, we recruited him in Ohio State. He's from Athens, Ohio.
Starting point is 01:55:19 His father is a longtime defensive coach, was Frank Solich, his defense coordinator forever. great family, incredible kid, tough as nails. He's developed into a pro prospect, and I've talked to him quite often and couldn't be more proud of what Joe's done. How did he get out of Ohio? Well, he played for us for three years.
Starting point is 01:55:38 And then he moves on? He did a grad transfer. Dwayne Haskins and Joe had the battle what was it two years ago in spring, and it was, I mean, it was inches from who was our starting quarterback, and Dwayne won the battle. Joe left as a graduate transfer and play obviously starting a second year now.
Starting point is 01:55:56 I mean, he's really, he's the real deal. Yeah, he's really, what he's done so well is getting the ball out. And like you said, the LSU offense is different now. They're opening it up. You know, it used to be kind of a downhill, which is great when they had those big backs and all that. But they're going to score a ton of points. You did that against Texas through for 471. That's incredible.
Starting point is 01:56:15 Unbelievable. So listen, I'm going to make you uncomfortable here. And this is my job. So I defended a hardball the whole time. I think it's a great coach. But now, if you're a quarterback, you've got to get the quarterback right. So I've defended him for years. I'm watching Shea Patterson.
Starting point is 01:56:30 I watch Shea Patterson at a high school camp. Okay, the line's better, the receivers are better. That offense, it ain't getting better. Like, I watched, and Shea Patterson's always reminded me, there's a little Johnny Mansell. It's a little loose for my taste, a little small for my taste, but he's got talent. Coach, what's wrong with Michigan's offense now? It's like four years now. We said this in the preseason that when you,
Starting point is 01:56:53 change offenses, and from my understanding, when I watch them, it's a drastic change. It takes a minute to get going. Yeah, it's been very disappointing. And Shea Patterson, the one fumble was inexcusable. However, the other one was a responsibility to the tailback. He was stripped from behind. Don't give up on this offense. If Donovan People Jones gets back, that's another big-time weapon, but they got to start
Starting point is 01:57:14 doing what they said they're going to do, and that's playing space, and they're not doing that yet. They're not doing that. You know, I mean, sometimes, you know, I think of you as sort of a CEO, your offenses were clever. You gave your quarterbacks a lot of responsibility. You know, Jim, even at Stanford, San Francisco, he likes power football. Is it possible that Jim is kind of a conservative guy a little bit? And with that tight, he's a little tight, that can rub off on coaches.
Starting point is 01:57:43 Do you feel like that Jim needs to lighten up the offense, loosen up a little bit, be a little more creative? Yeah, I don't know it's him. You know, obviously it's his program. and the way the game unfolded last week, it was a bunch of runs right in a row. And, you know, I was waiting for them. Once again, you're talking about a complete talent mismatch in the perimeter. And I kept waiting, I think, like a lot of the fans,
Starting point is 01:58:06 I get the ball out there, let these athletes go against an Army athlete in the back end. And, I mean, it's just obvious that Army doesn't have the same athletes that they have. So, yeah, it was, it got very conservative. I think that, you know, I heard comments about wanting to bleed the clock, et cetera. But, you know, if they want to play athletes in space, they got to start doing that because they do have the athletes. Oh, no, no, Michigan's, these are the best receivers I think he's had.
Starting point is 01:58:28 And it does, by the way. It takes three and four and five years to get the baby rolling most of the time. All right, I want to talk. So a lot of people said coming into the season, Lynn Swan just resigned to USC's AD. Clay Hilton could be in trouble. And then they make a change at coordinator and they get an air raid guy, which is not USC's history, like tailback you. And then they sign a bunch of quarterbacks.
Starting point is 01:58:51 They got about nine, I swear to God, in camp. and this three-star small school kid named Keedonslovis, freshman. I mean, he literally walks on. The starter gets hurt. They throw him in. Coach, his poise is incredible. He had to ask the coaches during camp if he could go to his high school prom. He's like, he's like 18 years old.
Starting point is 01:59:16 How do you explain him? What do you see when you watch him? I see what you saw. I saw poise. And once again, it's not some preseason. game. That's a Pac-12 game against a very good Stanford team and a guy that was extremely accurate and started dropping dimes all over the place. And I think a lot, the country, myself included, really didn't know much about him. But you'll certainly hear a lot about him.
Starting point is 01:59:37 He's got a little bit of mobility. What would you tell a quarterback? You're at the Coliseum, you're starting. He does, you know, when I first saw Dak Prescott in the NFL, Mississippi State Kid goes the NFL, he had a preseason game in Los Angeles and Dak was so poised. And I'm like, I don't like his throwing motion. I don't love DAC. He reminded me, actually, of a better T-bo in terms of NFL potential. And I watched this kid, and I'm like, I can't imagine how nervous I would be or my kid would be. It's fun of 80,000 people.
Starting point is 02:00:03 Have you ever had players like that, coach, and is it a quality you look for? Is that they're just never nervous? I think that's rare to find. Dwayne Haskins is the guy that was very nervous until his junior year. And then finally, he became that way. He was one of those guys that just would go out there. perform with, you know, just no issues whatsoever. So I think that especially the thing that everybody's got to remember, he's a true
Starting point is 02:00:28 freshman. Yeah, he's 18 years old. I've never had a true freshman, you know. Not a quarterback. I had a Percy Harvin as a true freshman that just wasn't played right now. But a true freshman, I don't think I've ever had one that just no, no nerves, especially in a big crowd in the Pac-12 game. I thought that was incredible.
Starting point is 02:00:44 You know, I said this. We largely acknowledge as a country who the good coaches are. okay, Nick Saban wins and Belichick and Urban Meyer and Bill Parcells. And, you know, we know the guys who can coach. But there is something to be said about likability. Brian Kelly's gruff and his face explodes and he's got the cold weather and he's yelled and screaming. And I think a lot of people look at Brian Kelly and they're like, well, and I think to myself, private school, cold weather, kind of isolated, not really in a conference. You know, it's a religious, academically tough, and he's knocking out 10, 11, 12 wins a year.
Starting point is 02:01:22 And I'm like, not everybody can get into Notre Dame. It's a little northwestern. There are some, I think Brian Kelly, he does this urban, and this is how I've always watched coaches. You did this very well. It's why a great coach. Notre Dame adapts at half. Now, in the NFL, everybody does. And you're not going to call out names, but I'll watch some college teams.
Starting point is 02:01:40 And I'm like, they just, they don't have the capability of changing. Notre Dame against Louisville was lost for the first 20 minutes. In the second half, that defense was unbelievable. On a clever offense, inside the game, coaches talking to coaches, what do they say about Notre Dame as Brian Kelly? Here's why he is so respected among the coaching profession, myself included. He's won at all levels. And I think a lot of times coaches get thrust into big-time jobs, and you never know.
Starting point is 02:02:08 He's won at Grand Valley State. He's won of Central Michigan. He's won of Cincinnati. He's won at Notre Dame. He does it right way. I'm always been a big fan. I'm friends with him. I think he's one of the top coaches in America,
Starting point is 02:02:18 and I think he's done a great job. Here's the issue that Notre Dame deals with. They don't have a conference. So how do you evaluate if Notre Dame has a great year? There's only one way to get a real ring at Notre Dame, and that's win the national title. It's tough. Yeah, and we're in other schools, you know,
Starting point is 02:02:32 Ohio State, we didn't win the national tournament, but you get a Big Ten championship reign, so you can say this season was success. Yeah, if you beat Michigan, you win the Big Ten chance, you still get some love. Right. And Notre Dame, there's only one way. And we all know is what was it.
Starting point is 02:02:43 88 was the last time that's happened. Yeah. You know, it's a, I like Nick Saban. I've interviewed him. He's been very nice, been very kind to me. I like Nick. But sometimes Nick, this is the thing that Nick drives me nuts. I would tell Nick if he was sitting here.
Starting point is 02:03:00 Nick's like, listen, we'll play anybody. I mean, we can't get games here. Nick. When USC ran the world in college football, they were playing Ohio State in Columbus. They were playing Virginia Tech. they're playing. Nobody wants to play Ohio State. You had games in Oklahoma. Oklahoma came to you. Nick controls four games a year. He'll play you as long as he doesn't have to go north of Atlanta. And I love Nick. But they're, Urban, you would go to your athletic director and say,
Starting point is 02:03:29 you can't tell me they just scheduled Oklahoma. And they didn't say, Urban, you want to play Bob Stoops? You had to at some point sign off and say, yeah, I want to play that game, didn't you? I did. And you usually sit with your athletic director. in the schedule philosophy at Florida as well as Ohio State was, see, you had the built-in non-conference with Florida State. So we made that decision. We were not going to go play somewhere far away, et cetera. At Ohio State, Gene Smith and I, we had Cal, and, you know,
Starting point is 02:04:00 who knew Cal was going to be down a little bit. You had Cal, you had Virginia Tech, you had Oklahoma, they have Oregon coming, and the schedule philosophy is play a big-time program home-and-home. and that's for your fans, that's for the college football playoffs, so you get the schedule strength. So that's the involvement I had. Did you like playing those big games out of conference? I mean, I like it.
Starting point is 02:04:21 Like to win. Yeah, I like to win. But I get it. You have to do that in our opinion. I think Alabama's changing, but that's way down the road when they're going to Wisconsin. I think they're going home and home with Wisconsin. They're going now because they're getting ripped. And by the way, it should be said this with all the social media and the phones,
Starting point is 02:04:39 you've got to give kids more. You can't play Citadel. Like the bottom line, in the south, it's hot, 62 to 3. You know, you put Wisconsin in the stadium, and it's close, people stick. I mean, that's part of the game now. You've got to, I think the SEC's kind of figuring it out. These kids, they don't want to watch blowouts. Yeah, but you have to figure, too, the SEC's getting two teams a year in the playoff.
Starting point is 02:05:00 And Ohio State's not. So does schedule strength really matter? That's the question of, you know, does it matter? And should it matter more? Those are all debates that I remember Gene and I talking about it. And you can say schedule strength matters, but wait a minute, does it? You know, if Ohio State doesn't get into playoff or another school doesn't get into playoff and there's playing nine conference games and another big-time opponent and they don't get in,
Starting point is 02:05:25 yet someone's playing eight conference games and then maybe not the strongest non-conference, but they do get two in. Those are all conversations you have to have. Finally, Urban before he came on the show today, Levar Arrington's a great player, former Nanyline Penn State, played in the NFL for eight years. So he's now a high school football coach. And right before Urban came on the show, we got a picture of this. LaVar's like, hey, coach, could you give me a little play?
Starting point is 02:05:49 And here's Urban. But what did you give him as a play? Is it kind of a little? I can't tell you, but it's a love LeVar, man. He's a defense of one of the greatest players of all times sitting there getting ready to coach up offense. Did you get some high school kids got to face Urban Meyer's Statue of Liberty play? It's a nice It's a nice perimeter run with a play action off of it
Starting point is 02:06:09 It's going to work It's going to work That's so unfair Some DB out there 17 year old kids got Urban Meyer Wizardry and he's just going to get Faked out for a touchdown Good seeing you coach
Starting point is 02:06:21 Good seeing you Joy Taylor with the news No Turn on the news This is the herd line news Listen you got to take advantage You know You've got minds like this walking around
Starting point is 02:06:34 You got to pick up a play, get some inside knowledge. Yeah, I mean, what you can, you know, as coaches, coach coaches. That's the way the game is. So, O'Dell said Thursday that he's going to be on the lookout for cheap shots and dirty hits called by Jets defensive coordinator Greg Williams. And Williams responded to O'Dell's claims that he coaches his players to play dirty. Odell, who?
Starting point is 02:07:00 That was a joke. That was Jerry. You know, that's just, you know, those are the things. I think there have been several players. I just found out about it, but we've got several players that have already come out and, you know, that have mentioned things about that. We don't do that. I've never done that anywhere I've been.
Starting point is 02:07:15 We don't do anything to hurt the team. It's the number one primary thing. If you're committing penalties, you're doing those type of stuff. We just don't do it. And, you know, and you guys are cooperating, giving him attention. Just don't give him attention. No, I don't know. Greg's, I don't know if I'd buy that.
Starting point is 02:07:32 I'm not like... You don't buy it. I don't buy that, I think. Great. Bountygate? Maybe just give a vanilla little answer and get out of that one. Also, you're not Jerry. So the jokes aren't working either.
Starting point is 02:07:49 Not as funny as Jerry. I'm not saying that O'Dell is right about him doing this. But you can't deny your reputation in this situation regarding this particular accusation. Yeah, that's... We got it on tape. Um... It's, I mean, Yes, tape.
Starting point is 02:08:07 We go on and on about the extent of the fallout from what you did with the Saints and Bountygate. And not to mention the other teams that came out and claimed that you had things going on there when you were coaching those organizations. I just don't think that this is very, this lacks self-awareness on many levels. I don't know why. Why did you put Greg Williams? Here's why the Jets. This is why the Jets were a mess. Why is Greg Williams talking about this?
Starting point is 02:08:32 Belichick doesn't let his assistants talk. Why is Greg Williams talking? Yeah, maybe he's just not available. This organization, listen, this is where I feel bad for Sam Darnold. They had a really great cricker last year. They let him go. They have no kicker. They didn't address cornerback or wide receiver in the draft.
Starting point is 02:08:46 It was their two issues. Didn't address either. Didn't address easer, either. They re-signed a receiver who's always hurt. Now he's out for the year, probably career over. They don't know how to spend their money. They don't know how to draft. I mean, it's thank God, Levy and Bell's not hurt.
Starting point is 02:09:00 And Trevor Simeon is, I'll say this, they do have a good backup. One of the smart things they did, they went and got a good backup for Sam Donald, who runs around, makes plays, could get hit. So I think, you know, I wouldn't bet that game Monday. I think the Jets, I think Cleveland's going to win. But, you know, why is Greg Williams talking? I don't know why Greg Williams will get. I don't know why he's talking, but if he is going to talk,
Starting point is 02:09:21 he has to know he's going to get this question based off of the fact that Odell talked about it. And have a prepared answer. Just get with your PR team. Be like, what can I say that we'll answer the question and then get me out of there without me saying, I've never had anything to do with anything like this. I'll make a statement that I think is true. I don't think Adam Gase wanted to hire Greg Williams. I think the Jets have not given Adam Gase complete control over the staff.
Starting point is 02:09:46 And I think Adam Gase and Greg Williams do not get along necessarily. And I think somebody allowed Greg Williams to address that. I don't think Adam Gase wanted Greg Williams to address that. I don't have that source, but that's what I believe. If that's true, that's just a disaster and a bad decision on the table. part. If you're going to bring in someone to run your organization, let them bring in the team that they feel most comfortable with, because then you're just adding more problems for them to solve if they're not aligned with their assistance and coordinators. Speaking of that game,
Starting point is 02:10:15 Trevor Simeon seems that he is ready to step right back into the starting role. I've played, so I, you know, I guess the sense that I've been there and I've done it a little bit. It's been a while again, so it'll be, you know, like I said, I'm chomping at the bit to compete. and be out there with the guys. We got such a mentally tough team and so many good players. These guys are built for this. I mean, you know, Santa, I don't know it's not hurt, but we're going to have a couple of injuries this year.
Starting point is 02:10:46 That's just the nature of it, but this team's built to handle it. Trevor did see some time in the preseason, so he's not coming in completely cold, being that it is just week two. And he's 13 and 11 as a starter. He's seen NFL action. I don't think if this is a complete disaster, master for the Jets. Levy on tweeted
Starting point is 02:11:04 this morning that he's fine. The MRI is clear so he's ready to go. Obviously you want to see Sam Darnold out there. That's the most ideal situation. And this game had a little bit of juice to it because the Browns and the Jets and Sam Donald and Baker and you've lost that element of it. But as far as the Jets
Starting point is 02:11:20 just not completely being non-competitive in this game, I don't know if I'm going to go that far. I still think the Browns win. But it's just more of like, it's more of the Jets. You know, and that's kind of the disappointment what you were just alluding to. I think that the Jets, if they do things right,
Starting point is 02:11:36 can be in a position to be competitive, to be a contender within three years. But you have to start building and laying that platform now. And I don't know if I see that. Finally, Cam Newton had less than a stellar performance last night in the 2014 lost to the bucks. He was 2450 with no touchdowns, 0 for 10 under arrest with three sacks.
Starting point is 02:11:56 Following the game, Cam did take blame for the offensive struggles. It's extremely frustrating knowing that you're getting opportunities and you just can't put the ball in the end zone. It's hard to look defensive guys in their eyes after a game like this, you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, offensively, we don't hold up by any bargain. And we're past due. Like, special teams had a good return.
Starting point is 02:12:20 Defensively, with stout all game. But all fingers are just pointing back to me specifically in offense. I ain't get the job done tonight, man. and it's frustrating. I wish I could say something other than that, but, you know, that's the facts. You know, it's funny. He has gotten more outlandish, I would say,
Starting point is 02:12:39 with his fashion in the eight-game losing streak. And I do wonder if in a weird way, it's just sort of, even if it's not even subtle, like he's taking the glare off the games. He hasn't won in eight. That's half a season. Hasn't been a touchdown in four games. His fashion over the last half year
Starting point is 02:12:58 has gotten crazy or crazy. here. Is it for us to talk about that and not the games? Well, possibly, but I think that that's adding to it. Like, I think people feel like he should come out there and tone it down. I don't think so, because I think that's who he is. But I just don't think he's healthy.
Starting point is 02:13:13 That's what I think it comes down to. He's different. Those different looks. I mean, yeah. You couldn't pull that shirt off? I couldn't pull any of this stuff off. Nobody looks worse than a hat than I do. I look terrible in every hat ever made. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 02:13:29 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. And by the way, there are people that look good in hats. Like there are people that look good bald. Like George Foreman, round face, are like, it looks good bald. You ever noticed that? Some actors, you're like, yeah, for sure. You look good.
Starting point is 02:13:44 The Rock. Matt Lauer, the Rock, you're like, yeah, it's perfect. It works. You kind of look good bald. I don't look good in hats. And bald, you don't even want to see me bald. I think you could blow off the scarf, though. The ascot, you mean?
Starting point is 02:13:57 The sophisticated. You cannot pull off the scarf. Don't try that. Oatmeal in the morning. I wear my scarf. Jason McIntyre's my favorite segment, I think, of the week. Tomorrow's headlines today, the former newspaper guy, gives us his predictions. He's doubling down on his craziest Patriots prediction.

They'll give you the fees and the accessories before you walk. in the door. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 02:14:35 Welcome back to the herd. It's time to talk Fox Sports Super 6. Colin, we actually had a winner last night for the Thursday night football Super 6 free-to-play game. One Minnesota won $125,000 yesterday. Only one person out of nearly 70,000 entrance answered all six questions correctly. Wow. So congratulations. Now it's time to talk Super 6 NFL Sunday, the free to play game where you can win up to $250,000. of Terry Bradshaw's money. One of the matchups this week is Patriots versus Dolphins. Colin, give me a winner and a final score.
Starting point is 02:15:07 I'd take Patriots 30 to 10. They've never played well in Miami. They're introducing AB to the offense. I think they'll be a little clunky, and I don't think Belichick wants to rub it in on Brian Flores, but they'll win. They'll win comfortably. They have never played down in Miami well.
Starting point is 02:15:21 It's also August, September, weather in Miami. It's a little warm. It's a furnace. So Brady's never played great down there. He's had real struggles. He plays great against Buffalo and Pittsburgh. He doesn't play well here. And so I think they'll be choppy, but they'll win going away.
Starting point is 02:15:37 Jason McIntyre. Let's bring him in. J. Mack, the former biglead.com's Fox Sports Radio to Mondays, tomorrow's headlines today. Look at those pants. What is going on with you in those pants? Those are crazy pants. Joy, you know about the South Beach flu, right?
Starting point is 02:15:52 Supposedly Tom Brady's going to get that this week. You know, you're going on a South Beach, hang out a little bit. You don't have to worry about the dolphins. That's what Pittsburgh got two years ago. The players were vomiting on the sidelines. You're like, that's Picardy Rum, like they partied. I mean, it's a little hard to resist, and nothing ever closes there either. A couple party animals like Josh Gordon and Antonio Brown could get a little fun there in Miami.
Starting point is 02:16:15 All right. Tomorrow's what these guys do. Headlines today. We may or may not have the headlines, but you'll be funny anyway. All right, the matchup between the Cowboys and the Redskins. The headline will be. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong about the Cowboys. was last week. I thought the Giants had a shot
Starting point is 02:16:31 and the headline will be don't DAC up the Brinks truck. Listen, how bad of a business deal is it when Jerry Jones was supposed to get a deal done with DAC after the greatest game he's ever played in his life? He was bad against one of the worst secondaries
Starting point is 02:16:46 in the league and everybody wants to go over Oh, Kellyn Moore plus Dak Prescott Super Bowl. You know, Jerry Jones wisely did not get the deal done. I think we'll see some regression from Dak, right, against the Redskins. Better secondary. Now you go on the road.
Starting point is 02:17:01 There is some Kellynne Moore tape out there. Sure. Right? With the new stuff. I think the Redskins have a chance to keep it close. Again, I'm out on giving DAC all the money that you want to give him, Colin. All right. I know you love him.
Starting point is 02:17:14 He's your guy. I like him a lot. There's a lot of things I like about it. It's a marathon, not a sprint this year. I do like him better than Cam. All right. St. Rams' NFC championship rematch tomorrow's headlines today. Probably the best game of the weekend, right?
Starting point is 02:17:27 I think it's certainly one of them. I figured you do. be there in a box with a bunch of famous people at the games. Yeah. All right. So the headline Monday will be New Orleans old result. I got the Rams here. I think the Rams are the team.
Starting point is 02:17:41 They're the pick. I think you have them in the Blazing Five, right? Listen, the numbers come down. I liked them at three. I think the number's now two. So I like the Rams. By the way, the saints, the worldview of the Saints is explosive and wild. And the last six games, they're 0 and 6 covering the spread.
Starting point is 02:17:58 By the way, have you looked at Drew Breeze's final three games last year? Outdoors. That's the key. Outdoors. Didn't throw for over 203 yards. Two touchdowns, three picks. He's just not the same quarterback outside the dome. And by the way, the Saints run defense gave up 7.8 yards of carry to Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson.
Starting point is 02:18:16 What is Gurley Malcolm Brown? I think the Rams can control the clock, keep Drew Breeze off the field. I like the Rams here to win the rematch. Okay. Steelers now face off that Patriot loss. They face at home Seattle tomorrow's headlines today. Patriots fans were killing me all weekend because I picked the Steelers on this show last week. I think the headline Monday will be climbing out of a pit.
Starting point is 02:18:42 Ben Rothesberger and Mike Tomlin will get right against Seattle. Seattle's playing, when Seattle plays these East Coast games under Pete Carroll, they have really struggled. I'm not a huge trend better, but I do some stuff for Fox Sports and I gave this one out. first two weeks of the season, last four years, Pete Carroll, 08 and 1 against the spread. He just doesn't get his team prepared for the first two weeks of the season. Now, you just gave up 400 yards to Andy Dalton. What do you call it, the red rifle or something?
Starting point is 02:19:11 The beige water pistol. The beige water pistol. 400 yards in Seattle. What is Rathusberger going to do after getting his teeth kicked in by the Patriots defense? You know, one of the betting trends I use all the time? First of all, I tend to like underdogs. If you give you a decent quarterback in points, I'll almost always take it. when a team gets humiliated on national TV,
Starting point is 02:19:30 and it's a good, formidable team. I almost always take them. Pittsburgh. We were making fun of Pittsburgh Monday. I mean, Mike Tomlin was clown-suited for kicking the fuel goal and some of the other stuff he was doing out there. Big bounce back spot for the Steelers. Now, if they happen to lose this game,
Starting point is 02:19:44 it's going to get ugly for Tomlin and Pittsburgh real quick. I don't think they lose though. Okay. Will the Packers beat the Vikings and go 2&O tomorrow's headlines today? You keep flip-flopping on Aaron Rogers like a politician. What do you mean? What week you love him? The next week you're out, and it's not going to work.
Starting point is 02:19:59 Here's your headline for Colin Monday, Walking on Air, Ron. We tried to make that funny. I got a little chuckle out of you. Listen, Aaron Rogers, he was slow in the opener, but against the Bears, one of the elite defenses. Now he goes home to face the Vikings. And again, the casual fan out there,
Starting point is 02:20:18 whether they're doing the super bet for Fox or gambling anywhere, they're just looking at the score and saying, oh, the falcons stink. They got crushed. the Falcons move the football against the Vikings. Matt Ryan just made a couple boneheaded mistakes. I think Aaron Rogers moves the football well. This team, I don't want to start talking Super Bowl in the NFC,
Starting point is 02:20:35 but this is a team where the defense is very strong. Aaron Rogers, to me, look good. He's getting the ball out quicker. He's not going to take the hits. I like the Packers big this weekend. I also think they've always done a good job on their offensive line. They acquired Billy Turner. They've done one thing they've done.
Starting point is 02:20:51 They're like Wisconsin Badgers. Maybe it's a Milwaukee thing. Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay do a great job developing offensive linemen. They always have. So I never worry about that part. And I think Aaron Jones can run. All right. Now, you said the Jets.
Starting point is 02:21:07 Oh, geez. Here we go. Tomorrow's headlines today. What about now Sam Darnold out Brown's Jets? What do you got for me? So I had the Jets, I believe, a month ago on this show. They were going to shock the world and win the AFC East. I've got the gambling ticket plus 700. And, you know, they didn't look good choking away against a big.
Starting point is 02:21:24 Now Darnold gets sick. Here's your headline after the Jets Browns game. No problem. I love the Jets here. Listen, Colin, by the way, everybody is selling the Jets. Yes. Everybody's saying, oh, the Browns have it. Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 02:21:39 Do you know how much pressure is on the Browns going into this game? If Baker Mayfield loses to Trevor Simeon on the road, it's all the pressure. And let me quickly get this out about O'Dell Beckham. I can't believe nobody said this on any of the shows. Odell Beckham is getting no run. at all. It was all Baker-Mayfield. Then it was Antonio Brown. Nobody's talking about Nike's highest-paid NFL player in Odell Beckham. So what does he do? He puts on a $200,000 watch. Hey, guys, look at me. I'm here. I'm over. And he wants all the attention. Now he's chirping.
Starting point is 02:22:10 I'm telling you, there are going to be problems in that Brown's locker room. You mark my words. Odell wants the attention. It's all going to Baker. It's going to the other receivers. There are going to be problems for the Brown's jets in a stunner, folks. Stunner. You know, it's interesting. We know Ryan Tannenhill right now is every bit as good as Marcus Mariotta. In my mind, he's better. He's the best backup in the league. He's pretty good backup.
Starting point is 02:22:31 I'll give you that. Okay. Trevor Simeon is not Sam Darnold, but career completion percentage, the same. And actually, Trevor Simeon is 13 and 11. So the gap at this point, because Donald's still a baby, the gap between Donald and Trevor Simeon right now is not great. Now, does Donald have much higher ceiling? He's much more it playing. Oh, no doubt about it. But this morning, Donald and Trevor Simeon, it's inches not feet. But I think the bigger story is the Browns. Now you go in thinking, oh, we got this game. The line
Starting point is 02:23:08 has ballooned up to six and a half. I know. It's a massive. Again, it's the Browns on the road who just got boat raced at home by the Titans. Okay, Baker threw three picks in the fourth quarter. How's nobody talking about his hand. Suddenly he walks out of the game. Remember it with a bandage on his hand? Where's that story all week? I don't know what's going on here. I'm just saying. They have a lot of pressure under the spotlight of Monday night football. In New York, Odell's return. If he doesn't get the football, is he going to be chirping come half time? Hey, guys, I'm Odell Beckham. I'm open. I just feel like there could be problems for the Browns. I know I'm a Jets. Homer. You guys can let me have it. But Colin, it's not over for the New York Jets.
Starting point is 02:23:43 What was that headline again? It was funny. Mon, no problem. By the way, how do you get mono at like 24 years? What is he 23, 24? Well, he's single, so maybe he, you know. Maybe he's doing a Mark Sanchez out on the town in New York City? Well, it's called the kissing sickness. Isn't it? Okay.
Starting point is 02:24:00 Yeah. I don't think I had any. I think there's probably other ways to get it too. But. Really? Better not go around the locker room or then you got problems. But it's not over for the Jets. Are you bailing on them?
Starting point is 02:24:10 You're saying season over, right? I'm done. All right. MDrive for Men.com today. Refine your prime. MDrive for Men.com today.
