Okay, top 25. My son looked at me. He goes, you liked it, dad. I'm like, liked it. I loved it. It was very good. Very good. I got to start with this.

If you're a boss, if you're a coach, if you're a parent, you have one thing in common. Let me say that again. Keep it simple here. You're a boss at work. You're a coach somewhere in sports. Or you're a parent. There is one thing that. always works and one thing that never works.

You can be tough, tough early. You can get away with this. You can be tough early as a boss, as a parent, as a coach, and lighten up later. But if you are soft early, you can't toughen up later because your kids won't buy it. Come on, mom and dad are a couple of cream puffs, ice cream for breakfast parents. You are way better off. You can go read business. books and parenting books. You're better to be tough early and lighten up.

People will appreciate that. They hate the boss. You know, he's not that bad of a guy. I don't hate mom and dad. They were doing the right thing. They still love us. Or the coach. Yeah, he was kind of a hard, you know what.

But in the end, he's got our back. But if you're a cream puff early, you have no chance to act like a tough guy late. So this weekend, Kelvin Benjamin used to play with Cam Newton came out and crushed Cam Newton, basically saying, I would have loved to have played with any other quarterback, you know, somebody who was accurate and put the ball where you could catch it. You know, anybody with knowledge of the game. And, of course, Cam defenders came out in droves.

They always do. But you know what, Carolina? It's too late with Cam. You can bring in the new coach. You've coddled and babied him for the last seven years. Now you bring in Norv Turner and you want him to change. It's too late. This is why I really believe Cam Newton is Russell Westbrook.

Oklahoma City has babyed Westbrook so much. Now they realize getting the year 9 and 10, you know, we should be a little tougher, make him more accountable on his shot. Russell Westbrook says, yeah, I'm going to get a shooting coach. A little late. He's already got his style, his money, his personality. Cam and Westbrook are the same guy. They're world class athletes, all-time stuff.

They're deeply both flawed with accuracy. Both have an MVP. Both have had teammates they can't get along with and take shots at them. Both win to the finals but couldn't win. Both are really fashioned style icons in their respective sport. And both this year have a new coach to upgrade their current flaw. And it's not going to work in either one. They're very similar guys.

Westbrook does the one thing you don't need guards to do, rebound. And Cam does the one thing. don't need quarterbacks to really do. Run. Got a lot of quarterbacks with Super Bowls that don't run. Brady, Breeze, Montana, Eli, you know, name them. Not a lot of quarterbacks that run win Super Bowls. But Westbrook won an MVP because he got a triple double, which wasn't about the points

of the assists. We were raving about his rebounds. When Chris Carter talks about Cam Newton, it almost sounds like he's talking about Russell Westbrook. What Kelvin Benjamin said is true. Kim is not the smartest quarterback as far as reading coverages. He is not the best as far as placing the ball. He does have problems as far as accuracy throwing the football.

So if you can just get beyond the messenger, people have been saying this about Cam Newton for a long, long time. He should be better with the football. He should be a more accurate quarterback. At this point in his career, he should do a lot of the smaller things, a lot better than what he's doing. That's a lot about Westbrook. he should be more accurate and do the smaller things better. In the reality, though, is both Charlotte and Oklahoma City are non-traditional powers. And they both know they'll never get an athlete this dynamic, this sellable, this marketable, this talked about in their small markets.

And so they have put their arms around Cam and they've put their arms around Westbrook and they have enabled them for years. And just now, two years ago, Carolina came out. and called Cam out. And now they're getting him a quarterback coach. And it's too late. When you baby employees, when you baby teams, when you baby kids, you can't go tougher later. It doesn't work. You can be a hard ass early as a parent as a coach, as a boss, and lighten up.

In fact, that will be appreciated. But what did Kevin Durant say when he left Westbrook? What was the story that was out there? They enabled Westbrook. they've coddled him, they've babyed him. You're not going to get him to listen now. You're not going to get him to listen now. And with Cam Newton, all Kelvin Benjamin said is what everybody in the league's been talking

about for years. And the minute you push back on Westbrook, the minute you push back on Cam, the small markets, almost collegiate in size, rushed to the defense of Cam and Westbrook and because that's what small markets do. It ain't New York. It's not Philadelphia. It's not doubt. as Chicago, Atlanta, multiple teams.

The Panthers are a big deal in Charlotte, like a really big deal. We talk about them all the time because it came. He's their guy. And the community is going to enable them and the team enabled them. And the GM enabled him and the coaches enable him. And now you want to bring on a coach. All Kelvin Benjamin said is what every source I've ever had in the NFL has said about Cam.

And you're freaking out. And all my sources have ever said about Westbrook is what every source in the NBA I've ever had says about Westbrook. He's hard to play with. Talented is hell, but hard to play with. But if you baby early, good luck getting tough late. If you coddle and enable for seven or eight years, good luck coming in in year eight and nine and saying, we got this new coach.

We want you to change your style, your game, your fashion. It's not going to work. Kelvin Benjamin didn't say anything, anything that everybody didn't know outside of Charlotte. All right, one of the reasons I have always, always trusted Vegas. Everybody's talking about fake news. All right, don't trust me. God trust Vegas. You can call me fake news.

I think it's a stupid term, but whatever. I don't take it personally. I don't care. But we all trust Vegas, right? Because Vegas doesn't have any agenda. Vegas has no bias. They want to win lettuce. Vegas doesn't give a rip about your feelings.

They don't have an agenda. Their agenda is being right. Well, well, well, well, well, well. Isn't that interesting? NBA win totals came out today, and they've got the Lakers at 48 and a half wins. And if you put the Western Conference up, Las Vegas has LeBron and the Lakers as the number four seed right next to Utah. They have Golden State the one, Houston, the two, Oklahoma City, the three, and right behind them Lakers and Jazz, which is incredibly realistic. So let me ask you in April when the Lakers with LeBron James are facing the jazz, who are you going to take?

Let me guess. LeBron or Joe Ingalls? Go ahead, bro. LeBron or Derek Favors? Your call, bro. LeBron or Ricky Rubio. It's up to you, bro. LeBron or Donovan Mitchell.

LeBron or Grayson Allen. Oh, my bad, my bad. has a LeBron stopper, Jay Crowder. How could I have overlooked that? Las Vegas has the Lakers facing the jazz, as do I, in the first round. Both around 47, 48, 49 wins. Who are you going to take in that series? Who are you going to take?

LeBron James or a second year guard, Grayson Allen, Derek Favors can't shoot or unathletic Joe Ingalls who can't defend a barstool. I'm going to go with LeBron winning in the first round and so will Vegas. And oh, by the way, that means in the second round, they would end up facing the Golden State Warriors and they would end up losing with LeBron to the Golden State Warriors. And I'm going to predict that too. And so what we will have with the first year is LeBron winning about 48, 49 games,

winning a first round playoff series, and then losing to the Warriors and having three years left on his contract as still the best player in the world, seeking a number two star, as Coosma, Ingram, Lanzo, Josh Hart all got better, and Rondo was absolutely better than anybody predicted. Okay, 48, 49 wins in the West is a good basketball team. That means you'd be the second best team behind Boston in the East. This narrative that it's not going to work is absurd. It's going to work because LeBron with a bunch of dudes always works.

Doesn't always win a title. There's a big difference between winning a title and working. Los Angeles has 10,000 real estate agents, maybe 20,000. You don't have to be the number one real estate agent to be working well. It'll be making money and driving a Mercedes and have a nice house. You can be very, very successful in a lot of leagues and a lot of businesses without being number one, and nobody thinks LeBron and the Lakers are going to be number one.

But this idea is not going to work. Trust the people. If you don't believe the media and you want to call us names, go forward. I don't care. I'm not offended. But here's what I call Vegas. Here's the name I call Vegas. Accurate.

Without bias. No agenda. That's what I call Vegas. And they have the Lakers as a four-seed hosting a first-round playoff series against the team like Utah and Joe Ingalls and Derek Favors and Ricky Rubio and Grayson Allen and Rudy Gobert who can't stay healthy and LeBron, who's always healthy. I'll take LeBron second round, then losing to the Warriors. That's a realistic take if you don't trust the fake news.

We're playing some football now. We got camps now. We have a game. And, you know, I say this often. What did you have to overcome in life? I'm always impressed with people who overcame stuff. And again, the trust fund kid can end up running a company, but I'm more impressed with a kid that grew up in utter chaos, overcomes it and has a redeemable life. And a lot of people think I don't like Baker Mayfield.

Let me just say this. If Baker Mayfield succeeds in Cleveland, I will put my arms around him because there's a lot to overcome here. Three of the top five rookie quarterbacks that got picked in the first round have gone to dumpster fire organizations. Organizations with regular chaos, the Jets, the Bills, and the Browns. Just to show you the Cleveland situation here, they made a trade this weekend with the Buffalo Bills. They traded away Corey Coleman, a wide receiver they picked in the first round, and they gave them to Buffalo for an end table. This is what the Brown's first round picks have looked like the last four to five years. Brandon Whedon, Trent Richardson, Johnny Mansell, Cameron Irvin, Danny Shelton, Corey Coleman.

It's just a bunch of nothing. That's what Baker Mayfield has to overcome. And that's not a small thing. That is a big thing. Let me give you an example. Matt Ryan came into the NFL as a B prospect. He did not have a huge arm. Matt Ryan is one of the only NFL quarterbacks to succeed

that completed less than 60% of his throws in college. He was a prep school kid. He didn't play at a great high school. He didn't have great receivers, NFL receivers, and a lot of flashy highlights. Matt Ryan came into this league as a B prospect. B to B plus. But Matt Ryan has a grade O line.

has had one owner, two good coaches, even the coach that got fired, is a legitimate coach. He's always had good weapons. Always. In the last several years, he's had tremendous offensive lines. Matt Ryan is now viewed as an elite A quarterback. Matt Stafford came into the NFL, the Lions quarterback, as an A-plus prospect. He was the number one high school quarterback, the number one college quarterback.

He played in a tougher college division and had better numbers. Matt Stafford was drafted by Detroit, weaker ownership than it was. The previous GM was atrocious and gave him no players. He's had no running game and below average offensive lines. And Matt Stafford now is seen as kind of a B-plus quarterback who's underachieved. Matt Ryan's seen as an A-minus quarterback that's overachieved. And the reality is, what did they inherit? Atlanta's a well-run franchise with an elite owner, an elite GM, and a very good head coach.

And they've surrounded Matt Ryan with nothing but support. Sometimes I'm critical of Matt Ryan, but I would never deny he's a top-10 quarterback in the NFL. Matt Stafford is a better talent with a better arm, a thicker body. He really is. Matt Stafford was the better prospect in high school, college coming into the pros, and he's got a better arm. And he still has a better NFL body. Got a little pudding, a little more trunky. You know, I like that, a little thicker. And Matt Stafford can't win a playoff game. And Matt Ryan's getting to Super Bowls. And by the way, Matt Ryan this year, favored again to get to the NFC championship. What do you have to overcome? When I read this

story, and I look back at what the Browns have drafted, this is not a little thing. Baker Mayfield is going to have to overcome this organization's impatience, low self-esteem, and butcher draft picks. And if he does succeed, it is not only admirable, it is incredibly redeemable. But this is what he's facing. This is why I've said on Sam Darnold, slow it down. Sam Darnold's not going with Kyle Shanahan. He's not going to Atlanta.

He's not going to Sean Payton. He's not going to Pittsburgh. He's not going to New England. Sam Donald's going to the Jets and they got low self-esteem. They've got a below-average offensive line. They have no running backs and are below-average everything except safety and defensive line. That's it.

So that's why, listen, if Sam Darnold had gone into Kyle Shanahan, I'd be saying right now, Superstar 12. What I'm saying is Sam Donald's going to be really good, really, really special for 12 years. But I'm not giving him any Hall of Fame credentials because he has to overcome the Jets. and he will, over the next 10 years, have to win games that they shouldn't win. And Baker's going to have to do the same.

Bills just gave away a first round pick for an end table. This is their history. This is his reality. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So, Colin ESPN's Justina Anderson reports that O'Dell and the Giants have reached an impasse after they could not agree on his market value.

Interesting. He said he wants to be the highest paid wide receiver But the Giants reportedly view his market value as less than Sammy Watkins At a projected value of less than $16 million a year Watkins deal with the chiefs isn't even in the same universe as what O'Dell is saying Okay so everybody's going to whine about this But O'Dell Beckham has been hurt Been temperamental

For the record he was on the open market two months ago And the Rams passed on him and acquired Brandon Cooks from New England. They wanted, they went out to vet Odell Beckham and they didn't like what they heard. Which is pretty surprising looking at the staff that they have assembled now. This is the list of the bigger contracts for wide receivers right now. Mike Evans, 82.5 million over five years.

He's got 55 guaranteed. Jarvis, 47. Sammy Watkins is 30 million guaranteed. Brandon Cooks, you just mentioned. 50 million guaranteed. 50.5 million guaranteed. I don't know. I feel like Odellon.

should be the highest paid. Oh, I take Antonio Brown over him. Okay, I mean, interchangeable. Like, Antonio Brown, O'Dell, to me, either one could be the highest paid. Okay, I'd take Julio Jones over him. So I'm at three. I think perimeter player

history of theatrics and injuries, I'm not as high in O'Dell as everybody else is. In fact, today, if I was the Giants, and somebody came to me, receivers right now are hot in the league and said, Odell Beckham And if I was the Giants and I said

Okay, you give me Odell Beck. I'll give you Odell Beckham. You give me a second round pick and a starting right tackle. I would do it in a heartbeat. I know. You're grimacing. Oh, that's so boring, though. Well, but Saban's boring.

Belichick's boring. You're such a Miami Dolphin fan. No, I just have to think. Listen, I do think of this element of entertainment. You've got to put butts in the seats. Yeah, but the Giants always sell out anyway. Yeah, I don't know. You guys a very Miami Dolphin fan reaction.

It is, it is. But I don't know. I don't know if I'm ready to do that. He deserves to be paid, though, Colin. When you think of the NFL and superstars, he is number two mentioned all the time. I would agree with you if he was an NBA player. I am a believer that something like Oklahoma City, just pay Westbrook. Because you're never going to get Westbrook.

And by the way, in Oklahoma City, you're never going to get anybody that interesting. Right. I like the fact he's polarizing. Westbrook's fascinating. And I don't think you're ever going to win a title there because free agents don't want to go there. But in the NFL, the Giants can get free agents. And the Giants have a history of winning. And the Giants are not a small market.

I think OBJ is talented and disruptive. And I think on the market, if I could get a second round pick and a starting right offensive lineman, I think that's, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Well, I'm sure we're going to hear much more about that contract situation. So diving deeper into the follow out from Kelvin Benjamin's comments about the Panthers and Cam Newton. and we talked about that last segment. His current head coach, Sean McDermott, is not happy about it.

Let's take listen. Look, there's a time and a place, I'm not saying specific to what comments were made. There's a time and a place for things like that. And this was not one of them. So we have a lot of respect for our opponents number one and everyone in the league. I've spoken with Kelman.

And that's not how I want us to handle things like that. He was going to be asked about this. They're playing Carolina. Of course. Okay, but Cam Newton also responded. Here's Cam Newton's response. He did this on his Instagram story. I ain't going to go back and fuck with him.

I'm just going to work. You feel me. That's all it is. You know what it is. Just work, baby. No excuses, just work. He was going to be asked about this. And I actually have no problem with Calvin Benjamin saying it.

And I don't have any problem with him saying it this week. I know Sean McDermott doesn't want any distractions or whatever the excuses. I take it this week over the season. Right, right. Just get it out of the way in preseason. It's not going to be a story tomorrow. Like you said, he didn't say anything that most people don't feel about Cam Newton anyway. It's some revolutionary or like personal revelation about Cam Newton.

He didn't enjoy playing with them. Athletes questions. And then people are upset with the answers. Do you want every athlete to be a cliche machine? If you're going to ask questions the guys, should we not in the media put our arms around when they give us an answer that's fun and provocative and a story?

That's why I'm never mad when guys are cliche machines. When they just give the cookie cutter answer, the quarterback speak, I'm not mad at them because anytime anyone does speak with any emotion or keeps it real, we flip out. So they might as well just give us a bunch of bland nonsense. It's better for them. Finally, after a sophomore slump,

Dak Prescott has to step it up in year three, and he knows what he needs to do to make it happen. He spoke to Albert Breer of Monday morning quarterback about where the Cowboys offense slid last season. He said it was me. I was simply trying to do too much last year. I was getting away from my simple reads, but you want to win and you want to make the play to win.

It's that trying to win on every throw. I got myself out of position. Sometimes you want it too much. I can buy that. I can buy that he was forced to throw to Des Bryant a lot last season. I think he felt like he had to carry the team because Ezekiel Elliott's situation was out of control. So he did feel like he was playing out of character, at least from year one, to me last year.

Yeah, no, I think last year the Cowboys were a circus. The owner was a circus and a running back was a circus and Des was a circus and the offensive line got beat up. And the NFC was very, very good. And the Eagles won the Super Bowl in their division. And Dak pulled back a little bit. They called a sophomore slump. But I will defend Dak to the end. He does what leaders do.

He has opinions and actions and stands by them and is not intimidated by people. and I think if you go look in the last two years, the Cowboys have 22 wins in the very good NFC. That's the most of any NFC team. And during that time, they have been swimming in controversy, and Dak Prescott has acted like a 15-year veteran. He did pull back a little bit, but I'll be honest with you. When everybody gets rookie film on you,

they learn some of your secrets. There's a reason that it's got a name. It's called the sophomore slump. I predict Camel come back, have a very good year, and for the next decade, has a chance to put the Cowboys in the Super Bowl conversation for eight of those 10 years. Yeah, I don't know how great they're going to be this year, but I agree with all of that, especially the tape thing, because we don't even, we don't even mention that.

We only mention the chaos and the off-the-field issues that the Cowboys had last year. People know what to expect from you. They're learning your tendencies. It's not going to be as easy as when you have an amazing rookie year. Good stuff. Joy with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News.

DeAngelo Hall in less than 10. 12 minutes and where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong at the top of hour number two, one of our best ones here on a Monday. So just when you think it couldn't get sadder for T.O., it gets sadder. He decided not to go to Canton this weekend for the Hall of Fame induction. Brian Erlacker went, Sean Dawkins went, Brian Dawkins went, excuse me, Randy Moss went, Jerry Kramer went, it was amazing. Bill Belichick showed up for Randy Moss.

And there was T.O. in Chatton, Newhouse. looking small and petty and pouting and that's sort of his brand. And just when you thought it couldn't get worse after that step to the podium in Chattanooga, oh, it did get worse. Here was T.O. running routes against RICO McWilliams at a high school football field in Chattanooga, Tennessee, trying to impress the CFL. It did get worse. Yes.

And he's struggling to separate from RICO McWilliams. Folks, you can't go from a gold jacket to Rico McWilliams unless you work with Century 21. It's a really bad look. And Randy Moss and T.O. had remarkably similar stats and careers. Five different teams, sometimes a headache. Always fascinating. Remarkably gifted. But as I said last Friday, a great ending can take an average to good movie and make it feel great.

and Randy Moss's bumpy career when he's crying at the podium, when he's in Canton, when he's surrounded by Ray Lewis and Brian Dawkins and Brian Erlacker and Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick, Randy Moss, a great ending to his career. And T.O. He's at a high school football field trying to separate from Rico McWilliams in Chattanooga, Tennessee on a high school field trying to impress the CFL. Listen, you know what, remember what Dennis Green said, coach of the Arizona Cardinals? You are what we thought you were.

They were what we thought they were. Okay. So this is it. This is it. Randy Moss and you were similar. Very same number of teams, same number of headaches, push back from the media. But your TDs, your receptions, your yards, your teams were virtually identical. but in the end, Randy was a humbled grown-up, an adult, thanking people who elevated him to a great spot.

Didn't apologize for who he was. Randy didn't apologize. Randy said, I do it all the same way. But Randy in the end could reel it in and acknowledge I needed help. T.O. in the end, I'm just a victim. A bad ending to a movie ruins a really good movie. Let me shift to this briefly. for the last several years, you have told me stick to sports.

And I listen to you because you are my affiliates, my advertisers, and my audience. And I've always said, you drive the bus. You tell me to stick to sports. The network I used to work at, they don't stick to sports. They talk a lot of politics. But I don't. I don't. And I don't because I've been listening.

But what happens when you're trying to stick to sports and not talk to? politics and politics doesn't stick to politics and jumps into sports. We have an acting president who attacked a superstar this weekend, a superstar LeBron who had just opened to school. LeBron is doing as well as you could expect anybody to do as a superstar athlete, elevating himself and others. I'm sticking to sports, but our president's not sticking to politics. He's attacking NBA players unprovoked.

He's attacking NFL players. attacking owners and commissioners. My job is to stick to sports, but our president has become secondhand smoke. I just want to eat dinner and go to bed. I don't want emphysema, but I'm getting it. When I'm driving down the freeway and somebody keeps swerving into my lane hitting me, I'm trying to stick to my lane and get home safely. And then I get home and my wife says, why is there too dense in the car?

And I said, I tried to stick in my lane, but the guy next to me kept swerving into my lane. I'm trying to stay in my lane. I'm trying to eat dinner and go to bed without emphysema. But I got second-half smoke. I got second-hand smoke. I got a president swerving into sports. I like when my presidents pick a final four. I like when my presidents pick a Super Bowl winner.

I like it. I think it's cool that presidents are aware of the World Series. That's the world I live in. But I don't think it's cool when presidents unprovoked attack superstars, especially in the same week that in their hometowns. town, they open a school. Everybody wants guys like me to stick to sports. I'm trying. I really am. I'm listening. But politics isn't sticking to politics. And the most powerful voice in America is attacking athletes, making it impossible for me not to address it. I didn't like it. I've never liked it.

I have no problem with president, senators, and governors picking a March madness bracket. I do have a problem when they unprovoked attack great athletes who have kicked. but for the last 15 years, giving back. I'll go back now to our regularly scheduled sticking to sports. You know, to me, it's Randy Moss. You know, I think a lot of people only remember the deep balls and, you know, the big time plays. But, I mean, Randy was a guy who ran every single route on that route tree. You know, he's one of the rare receivers that kept me up at night. And I mean, I've gone against a lot of great receivers, a lot of Hall of Fame guys. And so, you know, not taking anything away from T.O. and Marvin Harrison and all these other guys. But it was something about Randy Mossman that kept me up at night constantly whenever I knew I was going to play him. By the way, T.O. is the bigger athlete, the stronger wide receiver, but you could neutralize him to some degree?

Yeah, bigger guys I didn't mind going against as a little DB because I was always tough. enough in my press coverage to kind of hold my own. When, you know, with Randy, it wasn't necessarily the size. It was the speed that gave me problems. It wasn't too many guys that I felt like I couldn't run down or run step for step with. But Randy was one of those guys who he always seemed to run just a step faster than you. And, you know, if I had to race a lot of these wide receivers I played against,

I probably would have beaten all of them except for probably Randy. balls. Wow. And he could catch and he could jump. And he caught everything. Yeah. Everything. He had great hands. By the way, so Kelvin Benjamin comes out and criticizes Cam Newton. And he's not saying anything that's shocking. I mean, I've been told by people for years that Cam kind of goes to the line with a play. He's not going to audible three or four times out of it. Cam has accuracy issues. He throws a great deep ball and he's got a cannon for an arm. Kelvin Benjamin came out and said, you know, I wish he was a little more knowledgeable. I wish he was a little more accurate. freak out. When you look at the criticism, what did you make of it? I mean, it's kind of that Michael Vick effect. You know, when we first had Michael Vick, you know, I can remember other players on the team

kind of, you know, who would you rather go against? Would you rather go against Mike or would you rather go against, say, Drew Brees? He was just getting to the NFC South. And I was like, man, I'd rather go against Mike because Mike's going to kind of give you an opportunity to make a play where Drew kind of just, you know, he's such a student at a game, he's going to kind of pick you apart. Now, yeah, exactly. You saw later in Mike's career when he gets to Philly and kind of gets under Andy Reed and that kind of, that tutelage of really how to be a quarterback and really learn, you know,

where to pick guys apart from and use his legs as a weapon instead of or as an extra weapon as opposed to the main weapon, you know, Mike turned into a different quarterback. And that's the same way I feel with Cam. Cam still hasn't really, you know, and it's weird to say that. this guy has won an NFL MVP, but he still has not reached his maximum potential of what kind of quarterback he can be if he did some of the little things. How many times you face him? Cam, probably three or four times, I think. And you felt generally comfortable. You didn't feel he was fooling you. You kind of felt comfortable in that space. I mean, you feel comfortable

at the end of the day. Just because you're comfortable, even being comfortable doesn't prepare you for a six, five, two. 260-pound guy who breaks through the line and all right, we got to try to get them down. Those after, you know, kind of scramble drills and things like that, extending to play. You know, running quarterbacks are easy to prepare for in a sense of what they're doing with the ball in their hands, but they're hard to stop. It's almost like we always say learning how to be a DB is easy. You either got man or you got some form of zone. Actually, going out there and doing it, it's hard.

I'm checking this receiver. I'm going backwards. He knows where he's going and he's running forward. It's hard to do, but to actually learn my assignment and what a DB is supposed to do, you know, it's one of the easiest positions to learn how to play. Or to learn your assignment, I should say. But it's hard to actually do it and learn how to actually, you know, run up and down the field and get out of breaks with guys.

DeAngelo Hall 14 years, three Pro Bowls. You know, when you look at. what's happening in the NFL. It's a very good year for stories. We even have a coaching story. John Gruden now, I want to watch the Raiders because of John Gruden. Me too. And my takeaway is, listen, I think he'll figure out the football stuff. He hasn't been that far away from the game. I mean, Joe Gibbs went into NASCAR and came back. I mean, John's been watching film for years. But I do worry about the Kalea Mac story. John, and I said this a couple weeks ago, 10 years ago in the league DeAngelo, I could come in as a coach,

55-year-old coach, and say, no talking politics. And it would be understood, no talking politics. If I as an older coach come in the NFL today and say in my locker room, no talking politics, a third of that locker room thinks I'm either insensitive, racist, or I'm inappropriate. It's harder today for the older coach. And John's been out of that space for a decade. How do you think he does?

Yeah. I mean, like you said, I'm going to be following the Oakland Raiders, is just because I'm such a John Gruton fan, I want to see how he does because that was my thing. You know, the X and O's, I know John will, he'll figure that out. That's the easy part. But it's having these dialogues with these players. It's a different kid now than it was 10 years ago that you're coaching.

And that's the thing. John's been doing a lot of fluff pieces and things like that and kind of been, you know, joking with the guys and all that stuff when he interacts with them. And so to actually be that pattern. that he was in Tampa the last time we saw him, you know, I can't wait to see because it's not too many those ra-rah screaming coaches out there anymore. And, you know, I can't wait to see what what this new look John kind of brings to the table. You kind of saw a little bit of that

when talking about the Khalil Mack situation. And, you know, I don't know if John did it on purpose or not, but someone asked him like, you know, what about Khalil Mack? And he's like, well, you know, we weren't very good with Khalil Mack. So that's the last thing I'm worried about is making this guy one of the highest paid defensive players in the league because we weren't good with them. And so, you know, I'm sure Khalil Mack heard that and probably thought something, you know, completely different. And John's probably just kind of casually saying it like, you know, kind of jokingly.

But I'm sure Khalil Mack didn't take that as a joke. Hey, a few years ago, Bobby Valentine was the manager of the Red Sox. He made an offhand comment about Dustin Padroia before the season, and it blew the locker room up. So by the way, when you were in the NFL, did you notice the difference of players and social media when you were in beginning to your last year in the league? Oh, absolutely. It's night and day difference. You know, that's part of the reason I feel as though I wouldn't coach because you're dealing with a different kid. You used to tell a guy to do something and they did it.

No questions asked. Now you ask a guy to do something and it's a thousand questions. It's a why. You know, you always have to give them an answer. You know, no one just does what you say anymore. And that's, it's today's kids, today's athletes. That's how they are. No one just does what, you know, what they're supposed to do.

They have to know the reason why. And, you know, a lot of coaches can't explain that why. That's why they don't have the respect of some players. So, you know, it'll be interesting to see. I think John's, you know, a great coach. And I think the X's and O's will work itself out. but I'm definitely going to be watching every Oakland Raider game just to see what John Gruton were going to get. And if he has kind of, you know, mowed.

Yeah, molded himself, you know, in a different light coming back the second time around. DeAngelo Hall, 14 years, three Pro Bowls officially retired August last week. Good to have you here. Finally, Baker Mayfield, I saw a story over the weekend. Corey Coleman was a very talented receiver. Browns took him in the first round and just gave him away for a baked potato. Nothing. And I looked at that and I thought to myself, Baker's got a lot to overcome.

Matt Ryan came into this league as a B prospect, has become an A quarterback. Matt Stafford came in as an A plus product and many think he's a B plus product because the lions haven't been good around him. I mean, you've been on how many teams you played on three teams, you played on the Falcons, the Raiders, and the Redskins. Did you notice a difference for a player with issues being able to overcome the fans? them because of the quality of the organization. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. You know, those established organizations, they have that support behind you. And you almost feel as though, you know, success there is a lot easier. And especially at the quarterback position, you know, we're talking about the Cleveland Browns. As much as we think they've gotten a lot better

and they're not who we thought they were, we have to see it. And they haven't shown us that they're different. You see Cora Coleman, we were. We were. expecting him to be a factor on this offense. Oh, no, I thought he was a first-round kid from Baylor, a speedster. I thought he was going to be a star. They just gave him away. Yeah, just gave him away. And so that in itself is a little weird, but Cleveland's always done things a little weird. When you came into the league in Atlanta, you had a lot of hubris and a lot of ego and you were talented. At the time, the Falcons weren't as well run as they

are now. No, no, no, they weren't. They weren't by a long shot. And, you know, you talk about Matt Ryan and Matt Stafford. When Matt Ryan got drafted to Atlanta, excuse me, it could have win a couple different ways. Thank you. Because that organization was just getting through the Michael Vick fiasco. Yep. You got Demetrov coming over from New England.

You got a new coach in Mike Smith. And so they got it right, though. They got it right. But it definitely matters where you go as a player, especially a quarterback because you have to have guys around them. You look at a guy like, Derek Carr, or David Carr, I'm sorry, he goes to an expansion franchise. Oh, God Lord.

And he never had a chance. Never had a shot. Never had a chance. And so, you know, a lot of these guys, it does matter where you go. Ben Rothensberger was in my draft. Eli was in my draft. These are guys that they wind up in Cleveland somehow, some way. Now, by the way, Steelers Giants.

They end up being Hall of Fame guys. Great organizations, great defenses, great weapons around them. And these guys are Hall of Famers, like you say. And, you know, you look at a guy who ends up in. Cleveland and who knows what's going to happen to that guy. By the way, do you ever see, I got 30 seconds left? Do you ever see a player get ruined in Oakland when you were there? Because they were a mess when you were there.

Who was the quarterback? Jamarcus Russ. Okay, well, that didn't work out. Although I do think that wasn't all Raiders. Some of that was Jamarcus. Yeah, a lot of that was Jamarcus himself. He wasn't ready for the room yet. Yeah, not at all.

Amazing movie. Done. Why do you have to qualify it? Tom Cruise did his own stunts. Because, listen, because it was, look, Mission Impossible was thrilling. Thrilling. He's hanging off of mountains. Amazing.

He's flying helicopters. Wow. There's bombs. It's very exhilarating. Go see it. It's not even my studio. It's not even my company. You know what is a good movie that I saw this weekend?

The Darkest Minds. Okay, there you go. You should go see that with your son. I think I'll like it. It was very good. Darkest Mind. All right, here we go. Where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong on a Monday.

Let's roll it. Where Colin was right. Kelvin Benjamin came out, called Cam Newton out. There's a reason Carolina brought in Norv Turner. Stop enabling coddling and baby. All Kelvin Benjamin said is, you know, any other accurate quarterback like Rogers or Big Ben, any quarterback with knowledge, I'd have a better chance to make more catches. That's the book on Cam Newton.

By the way, wide receivers, running backs do get frustrated with Cam. And by the way, Carolina's got good enough players. Stop it. They've got one of the top 10 offensive lines in football right now. They've got two good running backs, the best front seven defensively, in my opinion, in the NFL. Rock solid general manager. Rock solid coaching. Kelvin Benjamin said what people like me say were called haters.

He's just a teammate. Where Colin was right? NBA season win totals came out of Vegas, and the Houston Rockets are predicted by Vegas to win 11 games fewer. That's because they've inherited win, poison Carmelo Anthony. Name another Hall of Fame player,

a Hall of Fame player that would replace two marginal players and Vegas would say they're going to win 11 fewer games. This is what I say about Carmelo. I'm not doubting Carmelo's talent. He's not good for wins. He's not a good teammate. Think about this.

Carmelo's replacing Trevor Areza and Vegas is like we like them significantly less. And we all acknowledge Trevor Arise is mostly a defensive player. He's a good B, B, B, minus NBA player. We all know that Carmel is a Hall of Famer. This validates my long-held opinion. Some people are just talented.

They don't make teams better. They don't make rosters better. They don't win more games. They're just talented. I've worked with people like that. You've worked with people like that. Vegas saying Carmelo added to a really good well-coach, well-run team with two stars, and they'll win 11 fewer games.

By the way, I think the West is going to be weaker next year than better, and they'll still win 11 fewer games. Where Colin was wrong. Philadelphia Eagles gave head coach Doug Peterson a contract extension. I'll be the first to admit when he got the job, I said, he didn't call plays in Kansas City under Andy Reed. How do we know he's just not a glorified quarterback coach? it didn't even call plays.

But you know what? When you lose your superstar quarterback and you win three playoff games with Nick Fultz, and it's not like they just won playoff games, they beat a really good Atlanta team. They beat a really good Minnesota team, and they beat the Patriots. So, listen, he is 20 and 12 as a head coach,

3 in the playoffs, and 20 and 12 in the NFC, when you've had to deal with a catastrophic injury to a superstar quarterback, Doug Peterson has proved me wrong. Howie Roseman's a smart dude running that franchise. Peterson has become a very respected head coach. Where Colin was right? Lamar Jackson's opening game performance was what we predicted. He is not close or ready to start in the NFL, and it will not matter.

He is going to be Tim Tebow. He is a project more than a prospect. but he's fun. He's a first rounder. The franchise is good but frustrated. They're tired of the starting quarterback Joe Flacco, just like Denver was tired of Kyle Orton, who was pretty good too. And in the end, even though he was four for 10 with a pick, 33 yards and sacked multiple times and look way better as a runner than a thrower,

look at the Raven schedule. This is what Tebow looked like coming into the league. Now, I think Lamar's better than Tebow, but Tebow wasn't ready, and Lamar's not close to ready. it will not matter. The reaction after that performance in which he wasn't even as good as RG3. Forget Flacco was

that's the future of the Ravens. Now add social media. Can you imagine if Tebow would add Twitter and Instagram? He would have been starting by week four. Where Colin was right? Tiger once again looks great for a couple of days and then falls apart. The Bridgestone is a tournament he has rocked for years.

yesterday, five pars, five bogeys, and two double bogeys. 66 on Thursday, 68 on Friday, 73 on Saturday, 73 on Sunday. Again, this is a course he has been exceptional at. I love Tiger. I absolutely love Tiger Woods. But, man, he is now facing himself. It used to be fat guys, guys that didn't work out, guys that couldn't hit the ball off the But you've got a generation of young guys who are just exceptional that are 300 plus off the tea.

The equipment now has evened things out. So guys that aren't long off the tee are now long off the tea. And frankly, I just don't think Tigers got what it takes physically or mentally to string together four great days. And that's what it takes to win a top tournament. Where Colin was wrong. I kept saying to Tebow and Johnny Mansell, go to the CFL. show off

impress people show you love football you're willing to play in Canada I'm not so sure I was right on that Johnny Mansell threw four interceptions in the first half and he's never looked less competent and smaller

and listen I was never a Manzell guy but I've been preaching for Johnny Manzell to give the CFL a chance so I'm really behind this move but I'm not sure at this point his career is resurrectable I'm not sure at this point it is a salvageable career.

You got the baggage in the NFL. This was atrocious. And I worry about Johnny. They were asked him after the game, were you ready? And he said, oh, I thought I was ready. Johnny, you had two football practices. You weren't ready.

That's a bad team and a bad offensive line. At the end of the day, I'm not sure he's better off with that performance. I think it makes him look smaller than he's ever looked. Where Colin was right? Been saying for years.

Russell Westbrook is rigid, tunnel vision. And then a story came out last week, like Monday or Tuesday. Hey, Russell Westbrook's got a shooting coach. Yeah, congratulations. You're going into year 10. You do get that Kobe Bryant worked on stuff every year.

Westbrook's three-point percentage since he arrived in this league is 27%, 22%, 33, 33, 31, 32, 31, 29, 29, 29, 34, 29. And you're just now getting a shooting coach? Listen, I see this all the time. When organizations coddle players and then realize Cam and Westbrook in year 8 or 9, they are deeply flawed, let's get them some help, it's too late.

You've gone from the soft parent to the tough parent, and it's too late. That story on Westbrook confirms what I've always believed. They're now talking about, you know, he should be the better spot-up shooter. It took last year's meltdown to figure that out. I mean, I don't even watch every Oklahoma City game, and I figured that out six, seven years ago. Where Colin was right? As predicted, Randy Moss looked awesome,

and T.O. looks sad and small this weekend. We said it Friday. Randy Moss was going to step to the podium and be emotional. And then Belichick and Bob Kraft showed up. And Randy Moss has never looked bigger and cooler. And we forget about all the baggage. And oh, he had some.

Oh, he had some. And nobody cares anymore. Because Randy Moss put his arms around football. That's all T.O. had to do. And T.O. conversely, as we predicted Friday, is wearing a gold jacket in Chattanooga and taking shots at people. and taking shots at his critics, guys like me, it's not about me.

I'm irrelevant. You should have been there with Ray Lewis and Brian Erlacker and Brian Dawkins and Bill Belichick, who, by the way, Bill Belichick, he would have congratulated you too because you faced Belichick in a Super Bowl with a broken leg and you ate him alive. Belichick would have given you a big hug too like he gave Randy Moss. As predicted, Moss looks big, awesome, and amazing, and T.O. looks small. where Colin was wrong. The New York Jets, Adam Schaefter reports,

Sam Darnold has a very fair shot to start week one. Joy Taylor's right. Listen, I think they're mesmerized by Darnold. They have two veteran quarterbacks. Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCount are both more than capable to start. These are smart veterans who know the league and understand the offense. Also, Sam Darnold's the youngest of these five quarterbacks. He's 21 with the few as college starts.

If they're already saying to Adam Schaefter, he's got a very fair shot to start before preseason, then he's starting. I didn't expect this. I don't like it. I think he needs to watch Bridgewater in McCown. This is not a good offensive line. It is a losing proposition. And I'm frankly, unfortunately, surprised. by it. Where Colin was right.

Marshawn Lynch became the latest former Seahawk to take a shot at Pete Carroll. Part of a growing list. Remember Cliff Avril came on our show a couple of weeks ago and said players tuned out Pete Carroll and his stories. Listen, I'm not anti-Pete Carol, but I am one of the few that will go on the air, especially in Los Angeles, and say, this rah-rah, talk, politics, get loud.

It doesn't work long-term. It doesn't. What works long term is football, driven by a quarterback who does, if any, the talking. Seattle and USC now, about year seven, you get into these things with the rah-rah, kumbaya, get loud, talk a lot, high volume, pro player. They start to unravel. It is no way to run a family and it is no way to run a business. By the way, Sabin's going on year 10 and Alabama's favorite again. Pete by year seven unraveling at USC, NCAA baggage, getting crushed at home by Stanford and getting run out of the room by Chip Kelly and losing to Arizona at home.

In the end, I like Pete Carroll, but some of this stuff is two pro player and another player attacks him. Where Colin was right? I've never been into these baseball 10-year contracts. None of them work. None of them. find me a 10-year contract halfway through it that you're like, wow, what a great deal. The Mariners now, Robinson-Kanoe 10-year contract, not currently a playoff team. The Angels, Albert Pooleholz, 10-year contract, Mike Sosha reportedly on his way out. He says it's not true, but in the end, Poultholst's contracts a complete albatross. By the way, you know who's scheduled to make the playoffs now?

The Oakland A's. They don't even have a 10-year contract with their stadium. 10-year contracts in baseball are an absolute liability. I love Bryce Harper. I'd rent him. I love Manny Machado. Like the Dodgers, I'd rent him, find me a single 10-year contract. And they're always celebrated that halfway in.

You're like, wow, this is a great contract. Mariners now, where is Cano? Oh, he's suspended. Where is pool holes? Not doing much. Where are the A's ahead of both? where Colin was wrong. Finally, I put this tweet out in spring training.

Did you talk to him? I did, actually. Was he interesting? What did you talk about? Red Sox bullpen. And then Chris Pratt came over. He's like, hey, dude. And I'm like, you're my son's favorite actor.

My son loves Chris Pratt and Robert Downey. My wife loves Matt Damon. My wife's not starstruck except Matt Damon. She was ridiculous. She's literally on the phone with her daughter saying, Jason Bourne is sitting next to me. I'm like, he's an actor. And literally Matt Damon turned around and looked at my wife and started laughing.

I mean, he kind of is Jason born. He is Jason born in a way. It's fair. But my wife was, I literally looked at her. I'm like, seriously? She literally was on the phone to our daughter going, Jason Bourne is next to me. And Matt Damon heard it and being a good sport, turned around and just laughed at it.

Have you ever been Starstruck before? Not really. It's not my thing. But by the way, I love all those guys. Yeah, I mean, I saw the guy, red hot chili pepper guy, Anthony Kedis. I saw a bunch of people. Saw Dana White. Saw a bunch of people.

I've been star-struck twice. Who? Junior Seow, because he was my favorite football player growing up. And Michael Jordan. I think it's a fair. No, Michael Jordan was... Michael Jordan is fair. Yeah.

But a junior seah was just my favorite ever, so... Yeah. I like the ears are athletes, though. That's awesome. Yeah. I'm not sure. I got to be honest with you. I'm not sure who would I'd be star-struck by.

Tom Cruise. I'd just say, after Mission Impossible. I feel like you would be extra. I would. If Tom Cruise rocked in here right now, after Mission Impossible, I would be Starstruck. On Hinge. Coming up next, we're going to call the game the pick six.

The NBA came out with win totals. I'll take six teams and give you my thoughts on that. That is right around the corner. Friday, Big Three is live on FS1 from Atlanta. Corey McGettie leads the NBA, the big three in points and assists. So Corey McGettie right now is the best player. He's there LeBron. Corey McGettie is their LeBron. So he's going to get to the finals and lose. What? Cheap shot. Okay, so now we have time.

So the NBA came out. Vegas came out with its win totals yesterday and I could run through the teams. don't care about Sacramento either. So I thought I'm going to pick six teams, give you strong opinions. I got to give the graphics department credit here. Have you ever seen the movie Casino? Sam Rothstein? That's my head on Sam Rothstein's body. I'm Ace Rothstein. We're calling it Collins Pick Six. So here we go. All right, let's start with this. Vegas has the Celtics at 57 and a half wins. To me, that's the best bet on the board. Bet the old. Bet the old. Listen, Boston's not only getting two stars back, Jason Tatum's better, Jalen Brown.

They both made big jumps last year. And I think this is a real thing. LeBron is out of the east. They'll play with a renewed sense of confidence. Boston knows now this is their conference. Okay, it's been their conference last couple of years except LeBron and he's gone. So they're going to come in here thumping their chest and you get two stars back to a very well-coached team. And the other thing is Boston now sees themselves.

with the stars coming back and the development of Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown as a championship level team, they want home court advantage in the finals. If they're going to beat the Warriors, they're going to need games one and two in Boston and game seven in Boston.

This to me is the best bet on the board. I see Boston as a north of 60-win team, and I've said before, I think they'll win the NBA finals. I don't think they're as good as Golden State, but I think they'll win the NBA finals. So that's my first and strongest play. Take the Celtics over 57.5 wins. Next up, they've got Golden State at 62.5 wins.

What did they win last year? Like 58 or something? And I think fatigue is setting in. Boogie Cousins isn't around until March. So that's not a factor. We're not even sure if that chemistry is going to work when he gets back. That'll take, you know, six weeks to figure out. And, you know, I'll say it again.

I mean, Steve Kerr all but admits that the NBA regular season, feels like preseason for most teams. And again, we saw this team lose by 40 a couple times, 30 multiple times, and 20 half a dozen times last year. I think the dynasty in Golden States closer to the end than the middle or the beginning and 62 and a half wins. That's the kind of win total you get in a regular season when a franchise is trying to prove something.

They can win on the road. They've got nothing to prove. I think they're much closer to 57 or 58 wins. Next up, Houston. Vegas has him at 54.5. To me, that's a hold. That's exactly where I think they're at. I think they pull back.

I think Chris Paul now rests off an injury. I don't think they're as good defensively with Carmelo replacing Trevor Arisa. I think Carmelo at this point, I don't know exactly what he is. Is he as bad as he was last year with a thunder? Or do I get a little closer to Carmelo in New York where he was energized and at least gave you a good effort offensively every night? I think 54.5 wins is where I have that franchise right. now. They got the Lakers at 48 and a half. Again, I'm a hold on this. I never really bought into the 53 wins. The thing is, LeBron is not at this point in his career motivated or energized by practice.

He's not going to play much in the preseason. He's not going to be a great practice player. LeBron is a, he's a CEO. He understands. I'm not going to waste a lot of time in October, November, December, in practice. So I think the Lakers are going to be actually pretty choppy for a couple of months. And then about January, you know, they may have a little trade. They'll find a deficiency. But I think Rondo's going to take a while to work with LeBron and Lanzo's going to take a while. I think the back court's going to be choppy. They don't know exactly what it is, KCP and Josh Hart.

So 48 wins puts them at about a three or a four seed. That's where they're at, and I agree with Vegas. Oklahoma City. Vegas has them at 50.5 wins. I'd actually take the over. I think they're going to be a little better than that. They got mellow out. And they also have Paul George,

now psychologically as a settled player, he's going to end his career in Oklahoma City. I think Westbrook, when I hear that Westbrook has a new shooting coach, it leads me to believe that he's hearing the noise, that he's hearing the noise that he's hard to play with. That's why he put his arms around Paul George in the offseason and worked out with him. And frankly, you know, we always make excuses for Westbrook, but I like their roster. I think Stephen Adams is the best offensive rebounder in basketball. I think Westbrook's an all-star, and I think Paul George, again, is a great two-way player. five two-way player in the league.

Roberson comes back, who's a very good defensive stopper. So I think Oklahoma City ends up being a nice team that wins 52 or 53 games. And finally, one of my favorite teams in the league is Utah. Vegas has him at 48 and a half. Utah, when Rudy Gober is healthy,

is a tough out. Now, they're limited because after Joe Engels, I don't think they have, you know, Donovan Mitchell's not a pure shooter, and Ricky Rubio can't shoot. And Grayson Allen, come playoff time, is not going to on the floor, he'll be, you know, a liability because he's a kid, and I don't think he's a great defender at the NBA level. But I do think they're a little bit like the Boston

of the West. Well-coached, got a young star. Celtics have Jason Tatum. They have Donovan Mitchell, have an established go-to guy. And I think Boston's better than Utah, but I think they remind me of Utah. Not good enough now to win big games on the road, but very, very good at home with a Young star, a great coach, so I would take the over 48 and a half. That is my pick six. Collins pick six. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Get a pinky ring, Colin. What's that? I think you could pull that off, a pinky ring. I don't even wear a wedding ring because I've, lost two of them in the surf, and when I work out, they give me calluses. Get one of the rubber ones.

Yeah, that's a good call. Yeah, they're very affordable, too. So, Sean Watson is only entering his second year in the league and also recovering from an ACL tear, but his teammate, Tyron Matthew, is already seeing a lot of characteristics of a quarterback he's faced a lot. Russell Wilson. Say, listen. It's a beautiful thing.

You know, anytime you got a quarterback that's special, just has that uncanny ability to just great things on the fly. It always gives you a chance to win a football game. I always mention Russell Wilson and just because I played against him so much early on in my career and the things that he did for Seattle when it was completely out of a football game, he always brought them back. And I think anytime you have a quarterback of that caliber, it always helps you. That's a fair comp. Yeah, I like that comparison in that regard. Yeah. Because Russell Wilson is capable of keeping a team in the game when there seems like there's no hope. But the body type comparison, I wouldn't, there's an obvious difference.

No, but I would say with both, they're actually both underrated pocket throwers, and because they're so dynamic athletically, we pay attention to that. Right. But what makes Russell Wilson special is he's really good in the pocket. And the reason I said that Deshawn Watson should have been picked number one, not Mitch Trubisky,

Deshawn Watson, he can run around. He is a pocket quarterback. Okay, Tim Tebow never felt, to me, comfortable in a pocket. Deshawn Watson's totally comfortable sitting in a pocket and throwing 28 times a game. He was the most dis-and, I mean, I don't mean this in a bad way, but he was the most disappointing injury to me last year.

Yeah, bummer. Because they were just so exciting, and he was on such a role that I was really rooting for him. So I'm excited to see what he does this year. So we've talked a lot about Malcolm Butler and the baffling decision that Bill Belichick made to bench him in the Super Bowl. Yeah. But as a new Titan, he would prefer we stop talking about it. He told the Tennessean, I most definitely get tired of the questions. Every reporter is shooting their shot when they know they're just going to get the same answer.

What I tell everybody is it's just a coach's decision. I've moved on. I'm a Tennessee Titan, and I'm glad to be one. See, that's where I support the athlete. Okay, the action happened. The questions have been asked. Stop. This is where the media lacks credibility to me.

Listen, you have a right to ask a question. In fact, you have a right multiple days to ask a question. It's over. He's answered that question a million times. It's over. Like, that's where the media drives me crazy. It's not the probing. It's not the asking.

It's, if I saw Malcolm Butler today, it's like, we're done with that, right? Aren't we? Unfortunately, not this year because it just happened in the Super Bowl. Oh, good Lord. I mean, I agree with you and I feel for him. It's got to be annoying to constantly be asked that. But in a way, he should really look at it as a compliment. Everyone feels like he was the factor that was missing and them winning a Super Bowl.

So in a weird way, it's kind of a compliment that he's constantly being asked at. If you think about it, everyone thinks that if he played, they would have won. It's going to continue happening at least for this year. Eventually, people will move on, but not yet. But I do agree with you. Finally, the Rams have a very busy and had a very busy and successful offseason. And now expectations have skyrocketed moving forward. And fortunately, Jared Goff is all for it.

Siglissom. Hopefully it looks great. I think, you know, we've got a lot of good pieces in place and hopefully they can play here for a long time. I love it here. I love it here, but one of near and else. I want to win a Super Bowl. personally that's my number one goal and really the only thing I think about. I really feel like it's time that we do a show from the Hollywood sign, Colin.

How do we make that happen? That's the first time I've heard Jared Goff. Is that the first time you've heard him talk? Outside of a press conference, I think so. There's no, listen, there is no quarterback that lives in a city in the NFL that is more anonymous. I mean, seriously, tell me a quarterback that lives in your city. Jared Goff, if he wore those glasses in that hat and walked around, LA, he could walk through a restaurant and nobody would say a word.

And we're in Los Angeles with a major media. He's the star quarterback of a great team and a wild offense. It's smart, though. He's, he has done an amazing, I even know where he lives. He went and hid. Like, even where he lives, he just went and bought a house. I know, and he hid from everybody. That's smart.

I do like that he's talking about championships, though. I don't like when people set the expectations low. I think mentally it sets a precedent for the rest of the team and just the organization. expectations should be, should be to win the Super Bowl, no matter who you are, but especially with the Rams with all the pieces that they put together. But I really think we should make that happen. You think we have that in the budget? Get up there? For us to do a sign at the Hollywood? I don't think they'd allow it. This show is needy. We have a lot of maintenance. We've got a lot of bells and whistles on this show.

So, Joey with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. By the way, for the first time in 10 years, an Alabama player spoke out about Alabama. Jalen Hertz is a very good quarterback. He's an excellent player at the college level, but he will not be an NFL quarterback. He doesn't throw. I talk to my scouts, GM's guys. He's not an NFL caliber quarterback. He's a really good college quarterback, and he led them to a national title, and then Alabama does what everybody else does. They recruited quarterback every year, and guess what?

The new quarterback, the kid from Hawaii, is better than Jalen Hertz, and Jalen Hurts is like, well, nobody's talked to me. I don't know what's going on. And Jalen, Jalen, this is a the way the game works. This is why these powerful programs, USC, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio, State, Michigan, they recruit a quarterback every year. Nick Saban's got to worry about 85 kids, five quarterbacks. Let me support Nick Saban on this. Jalen Hurts is like, nobody talked to me. All I hear is, you know, am I the quarterback? Am I the quarterback? Listen, this is the game. When you go to these big schools, they recruit a five-star quarterback every year. USC does it. Oklahoma does it. Ohio State does it. And then

this is the world we live in. If you don't start within a year, you want to transfer. That's the world we live in. It's really an epidemic in college basketball. But let me support the coach on this. Jalen, you're a good kid. You want a title. But this is the way big college football works. You go out and recruit another five-star, four-star quarterback, and this kid's better. Nick can't hold your hand. Nick's not going to favor one of you. Nick has said, we don't know who this start. is, even though I think everybody knows who the starter is. But coaches always get blamed for this.

Well, this is the game of major college football. The most important person is the quarterback. The second most important person is the quarterback. And they recruit a great one every year. And sometimes, even if you want a title a year before, this kid from Hawaii is better, and they're moving on. You can transfer if you want. I totally get that.

But in the end, first time in 10 years, somebody talked out and said, Nick Saban didn't do this. Nick Saban did what every coach does. Recruit a great quarterback every year and somebody inevitably gets their feelings hurt. It's the way the game works. Coming up next, Greg Jennings joins us live. round draft pick, and he is joining us on a Monday via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Greg Jennings. All right, the story over the weekend, Cam Newton, yes, I've been critical. But what Kelvin Benjamin, a wide receiver, said was what I've heard for years,

that Cam can be tough to play for as a wide receiver, Greg, you actually had an experience with Cam Newton. Did you not early in your career? I did. I did over at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, his rookie year. And so kind of to be expected, but we're in the game. And I'm seeing him throw guys pretty much into coverage. And as a young receiver at the time, but I had some.

years under my belt. I had just got done playing with Brett for two years. Aaron now with three. And we had just come off a Super Bowl win. Like, wait a minute. I'm not going in there. Like I looked at Steve Smith on the sideline like Steve, you got to go in there. You're used to that. Roddy White and I are looking like, I'm not going. I'm not going. I mean, it was one of those things that you kind of expected that because he was such a young quarterback, but for us to be talking about it still now, present day to day, seven years later, that's problematic. I don't care how you look at it. You look at his numbers.

His numbers don't lie. Statistically, he has not thrown two, I think he has two years where he's been over 60% completion percentage. That's just, that's not winning football. When you were at the Pro Bowl, your concern was, and Roddy White was, he wasn't throwing you open. He was throwing you into coverage and hits. That was your concern. Yeah, I mean, it wasn't so much that he was inaccurate.

It was, does he not see this safety? Don't look at me right now. Like, that was my concern that his maturation as a quarterback and seeing and being able to decipher and read defenses was nowhere near where I thought it should have been, even as a rookie quarterback. I mean, because at this point, when you're playing in a Pro Bowl, you're no longer a rookie. You've proven that you can play.

So it was a matter. We knew he could play, but he was not anywhere close to the level of a Drew Brees or Aaron Rogers. Greg Jennings joining us, got the ring, pro bowler, it's the herd. So I said today, I saw the Browns traded away a talented first round receiver. And if you look at the last six or seven first round picks, it's problematic. There's no stars. Couple guys are out of the league, Johnny Mansell.

And I said, I think fans in the media do not pay attention to the organization you enter the league in. It's very difficult as a quarterback to get a second chance or a first round pick. I look at Baker Mayfield and I think to myself, oh, this poor kid has so much to overcome. Am I hyperbolic here? Or do you believe what you inherit when you come into the league has major influence on the trajectory of your career? Well, let me address the Baker. No, I'll address the where you come into the league. I think it definitely is something to be said on the situation that you embarked.

or that you're thrust it into, specifically at skill positions, being Y receiver, running back, even quarterback, because you're so dependent upon the success of others and coaching that it kind of dictates how well you progress. But I will say this. And when it comes to Cleveland, I don't, what they've done with Coleman, basically giving him away, that doesn't bother me one bit. And Baker Mayfield going into a Cleveland Brown organization that didn't have an identity or a winning way or culture, I'm not concerned about that any longer because you got John Dorsey at General Manager now and you have a new regime of got. who are bringing in a winning mentality, a winning mindset.

John Dorsey has experienced success in Green Bay. John Dorsey is also won in Kansas City. So now you're bringing in this guy who's like, look, either you're going to buy into who we are and what we're doing. Either your talent is going to match your work or you're going to be out the door. And I think that's what we're seeing is him kind of turning over some of that last regime unsuccessful talent that they had

and I like they're trending up in my opinion okay it's fair all right I saw this story OBJ and the giants are at an impasse now you know sometimes I can be a little tough on on wide receiver wait wait wait wait wait wait a little

sometimes occasionally come on Colin you're the GM today he's been hurt he has theatrics um he's a perimeter player, how much is he worth? You tell me, you're the GM of the Giants. You're going to pay him $16 million off that cap?

I'm going to pay him $16 million. Wow. When I see what these other receivers are getting, I'm looking at here in Minnesota, and I'm seeing what they just gave their young receiver who didn't have over 900 yards receiving. Is he a good talent? Absolutely.

but is he O'Dell Beckham? Absolutely not. And I don't like when people focus on what happened. Like, I get it. It carries weight. But he got injured last year for the first time, pretty much in his career. So, I mean, a significant injury at that. He's going to come back to who we saw he was.

Like, let's not get too ridiculous here. He is a top three receiver in this league when healthy and when on the field. He is probably the number one biggest threat at the receiver position in the NFL because of his playmaking ability and his speed. And what I mean by threat is to a defensive coordinator, preparation, he is a headache. because now you're you are opening up the field to everyone else because of this one guy and what his potential is when just the ball being in his hand. So I think that carries a lot more weight than what you even would like to give it credit.

He is, he's almost like the lifeline of that offense. Oh boy. You enjoy Taylor. Yeah. Hey, look, you got, you got a call the spade of spay. what it is we see is what it is. I mean, him not being on the field greatly impacted that offense, greatly impacted Eli Manning and has impacted that offense drastically. And so him just being back out there, him just being talked about by defensive

coordinators poses a threat. That's value. All right. Greg Jennings, look at that cool room he's in right there. He's got a bunch of cool jerseys in. stuff. Look at that. It's very, very nice. Congratulations for you on your your room and stuff.

All right, Greg Jennings, we got to go, buddy. You know, Joy, you are, you and Greg Jennings are relentless on this. Sixteen million. Listen, he's arguably the best receiver in the league. Gosh. You can do Julio Jones. You can do Antonio Brown.

Also a very telling moment between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold and Best for Last a little bit later. But we're starting with Cam Newton. A former player with Cam, a receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, said this, I would have been better this weekend.

He said, I would have been better if you'd have put me with any other quarterback. Let's be real. You know what I'm saying? Any other accurate quarterback like Rogers, Eli, or Big Ben, anybody, anybody, quarterbacks, you know, with knowledge that know how to place a ball and give you a better chance to catch the ball. But you know what, Carolina?

It's too late with Cam. You can bring in the new coach. You've coddled and babied him for the last seven years. Now you bring in Norv Turner and you want him to change. It's too late. This is why I really believe Cam Newton is Russell Westbrook. Oklahoma City has babyed Westbrook so much. Now they realize getting the year 9 and 10,

you know, we should be a little tougher, make him more accountable on his shot. Russell Westbrook says, yeah, I'm going to get a shooting coach. Little late. He's already got his style, his money, his personality. Cam and Westbrook are the same guy. They're world-class athletes, all-time stuff. They're deeply both flawed with accuracy.

Both have an MVP. Both have had teammates they can't get along with and take shots at them. Both win to the finals, but couldn't win. Both are really fashioned style icons in their respective sport. and both this year have a new coach to upgrade their current flaw. And it's not going to work in either one. They're very similar guys. Westbrook does the one thing you don't need guards to do.

Rebound. And Cam does the one thing you don't need quarterbacks to really do. Run. Got a lot of quarterbacks with Super Bowls that don't run. Brady, Breeze, Montana, Eli, you know, name them. Not a lot of quarterbacks that run win Super Bowls. But Westbrook won an MVP. because he got a triple double,

which wasn't about the points of the assists. We were raving about his rebounds. When Chris Carter talks about Cam Newton, it almost sounds like he's talking about Russell Westbrook. What Kelvin Benjamin said is true. Cam is not the smartest quarterback as far as reading coverages. He is not the best as far as placing the ball. He does have problems as far as accuracy throwing the football.

So if you can just get beyond the messenger, people have been saying this about Cam Newton for a long, long time. He should be better with the football. He should be a more accurate quarterback. At this point in his career, he should do a lot of the smaller things, a lot better than what he's doing. That's a lot about Westbrook. He should be more accurate and do the smaller things better. In the reality, though, is both Charlotte and Oklahoma City are non-traditional powers.

And they both know they'll never get an answer. athlete, this dynamic, this sellable, this marketable, this talked about in their small markets. And so they have put their arms around Cam and they've put their arms around Westbrook and they have enabled them for years. And just now, two years ago, Carolina came out and called Cam out. And now they're getting him a quarterback coach. And it's too late. When you baby employees, when you baby teams, when you baby kids, you can't go tougher later. It doesn't work. You can be a hard ass early as a parent, as a coach, as a boss, and lighten up.

In fact, that will be appreciated. But what did Kevin Durant say when he left Westbrook? What was the story that was out there? They enabled Westbrook. They've coddled him. They've babyed him. You're not going to get him to listen now. You're not going to get him to listen now.

And with Cam Newton, all Kelvin Benjamin, said is what everybody in the league's been talking about for years. And the minute you push back on Westbrook, the minute you push back on Cam, the small markets, almost collegiate in size, rushed to the defense of Cam and Westbrook and, because that's what small markets do. It ain't New York. It's not Philadelphia. It's not Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, multiple teams. The Panthers are a big deal in Charlotte, like a really big deal. We talk about them all the time because it came. he's their guy and the community is going to enable him and the team enabled him and the GM enabled him and the coaches enable him and now you want to bring on a coach.

All Kelvin Benjamin said is what every source I've ever had in the NFL has said about Cam and you're freaking out. And all my sources have ever said about Westbrook is what every source in the NBA I've ever had says about Westbrook. He's hard to play with. Talton is hell but hard to play with. But if you baby early, good luck getting tough late. if you coddle and enable for seven or eight years,

good luck coming in in year eight and nine and say, we got this new coach, we want you to change your style, your game, your fashion, it's not going to work. Kelvin Benjamin didn't say anything, anything that everybody didn't know outside of Charlotte.

All right, one of the reasons I have always, always trusted Vegas. Everybody's talking about fake news. All right, don't trust me. Got trust Vegas. You can call me fake news. I think it's a stupid term, but whatever.

I don't take it personally. I don't care. But we all trust Vegas, right? Because Vegas doesn't have any agenda. Vegas has no bias. They want to win lettuce. Vegas doesn't give a rip about your feelings. They don't have an agenda.

Their agenda is being right. Well, well, well, well, well, well. Isn't that interesting? NBA win totals came out today, and they've got the Lakers at 48 and a half wins. And if you put the Western Conference up, Las Vegas has LeBron and the Lakers as the number four seed right next to Utah. They have Golden State the one, Houston, the two, Oklahoma City, the three, and right behind them Lakers and Jazz, which is incredibly realistic.

So let me ask you, in April, when the Lakers with LeBron James are facing the Jazz, who are you going to take? Let me guess. LeBron or Joe Ingalls? Go ahead, bro. LeBron or Derek Favors? Your call, bro. LeBron or Ricky Rubio. It's up to you, bro.

LeBron or Donovan Mitchell. LeBron or Grayson Allen. Oh, my bad, my bad. Utah has a LeBron stopper, Jay Crowder. How could I have overlooked that? Las Vegas has the Lakers facing the jazz, as do I, in the first round. Both around 47, 48, 49 wins. Who are you going to take in that series?

Who are you going to take? LeBron James or a second-year guard, Grayson Allen, Derek Favors can't shoot or unathletic Joe Ingalls who can't defend a barstool. I'm going to go with LeBron, winning in the first round and so will Vegas. And oh, by the way, that means in the second round, they would end up facing the Golden State Warriors

and they would end up losing with LeBron to the Golden State Warriors. And I'm going to predict that too. And so what we will have with the first year is LeBron winning about 48, 49 games, winning a first round playoff series, and then losing to the Warriors and having three years left on his contract that's still the best player in the world, seeking a number two star as Kuzma, Ingram, Lonzo, Josh Hart all got better. And Rondo was absolutely better than anybody predicted.

Okay, 48, 49 wins in the West is a good basketball team. That means you'd be the second best team behind Boston in the east. This narrative that it's not going to work is absurd. I just learned an amazing stat about Tony Gonzalez. I did not know this. Do you know that Tony Gonzalez has the second most receptions in NFL history behind Jerry Rice?

I did not know that. That's an unbelievable stat. For a tight end, who didn't until the end play with an elite quarterback. That's an unbelievable stat. Tony was pretty good. That would be like leading the second leading all-time assist guy in the NBA and you never played with good shooters. That's the most impressive Tony Gonzalez stat ever.

I had no idea until two minutes ago. Second most receptions in NFL history behind Jerry Rice. Is that a misprint? Get out here, Tony Gonzalez. Well, 17 years. I mean, but you're going to be. to be a first ballot Hall of Fame or blah, blah, blah. What are you, Hall of Fame eligible?

This year, this year. Yeah, yeah, this year. Wow. Yeah, you believe that? It goes quick. You got all those catch. Okay, so this is interesting. Thanks for knowing me.

I'm even working together for a year. I don't have your resume totally memorized. But it is interesting that, you know, Kelvin Benjamin comes out and says, listen, man, it would have helped if a guy was more accurate. And Greg Jennings came on earlier and said, yeah, I was with Cam in the Pro Bowl my first year. And I was like, dude, there's safeties over there. You can't set me up.

Tell me the quarterback Tony you played with that really understood the essence of throwing you open, protecting you, because there is a difference between guys. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. The guy I played with that could do that? Yes. I think me. I think as a player, you have to learn how to read the defenses. And so, okay, if it's a zone, I'll tell the quarterback, I'm not running that way.

I'm going to sit down. If you throw it over there, that's on you. But I'm sitting down so I don't get hit. So a lot of those times you have to, you control. most of that. Now, and all the time, though, I think like 10% of the time the quarterback might throw me into a situation where I get in trouble, but a lot of the times I'm looking ahead to make sure that I'm staying

safe. So you do believe some of that culpability comes on the player, the receiver, the tight end? I think absolutely. And that's one thing that I tell young guys all the time, is that if you keep running, you're going to get hit. Like, slow down on purpose. Because that quarterback might not see that guy that you see. And if he throws it,

you're going to get lit up. Yeah. So when Calvin Benjamin and says that, your takeaway, because you've been critical of Cam before. You said you like him. I like Cam. But we're like eight, nine years into this thing, and he still makes mistakes that would drive people crazy. Yeah, well, here's the deal.

I think Cam is, his greatest asset is 6-6-265 pounds that can run. Yeah. Okay, that he needs to use his legs and that athleticism in order to be effective. That's when he won the MVP. They went to the Super Bowl. That's when he's at his best. I think Cam, over the last couple years, people get in his head and they're saying, you got to be that pocket passer, you got to keep evolving as a player,

or he gets hurt, and then he can't use that frame and that athleticism, and that hurts him. He's not an accurate quarterback. He's not. It's not a surprise. I played with him at the Pro Bowl, too. A couple of those balls were flying three feet over my head, but then a lot of them were accurate, too. It's not a bad case of NFL pro very good quarterback, but I just think, I agree with

Kelvin Benjamin. Yeah, he's not an accurate guy, but Kelvin Benjamin just put a lot of pressure on himself. Let's see what you do now out there. Yeah, no, that's a good point. By the way, we're talking about, of the many stories today, Baker Mayfield, Cleveland just traded one of their first round wide receivers for not much. And I said, you know, we forget about in the NFL what people inherit. There's no question that Belichick and Kraft have helped Tom Brady. Now, Tom's a worker, like you, you succeeded despite having to overcome some stuff, some coordinators that didn't throw the ball, some quarterbacks that weren't accurate.

Great, Will Chamberlain was going to be great regardless of his coach. Calvin Johnson was going to be a Hall of Famer regardless of his coach. But there's no question you can be elevated. And Tom Brady and you, I think Tom's been elevated. Carson Palmer goes to New England. Carson Palmer has a better career than he has. When you look at, go to the situation with you, because you stayed in Kansas City for a long time. How did you not become bitter knowing, because players around the league,

they know when the organization's poorly run, right? How does Baker, two years in it to grease fire, not get bitter? How did you avoid that? I got bitter. I was really bitter. Oh, yeah, I was moody and everything. You're looking at the organization. What kind of pick is that?

What kind of signing is that? And, you know, you just have to keep your mouth shut and keep going. You know, you don't want to rock the boat too much. That's one thing about my career that I wish I probably would have rocked the boat a little bit more because I had a voice and I don't think I used it as much. much as I could have. You wanted to be popular early. I was really concerned about being liked by everybody, which I, you know, as I gotten older, I was, I don't care. Right. You have to kind of, you have to kind of go for what, what's going to make you happy. So I look at Baker,

I like Glenn Dorsey, though, the general manager. Yeah, yeah, yeah, John Dorsey, I'm sorry. He's making some good, I don't have, I don't have a problem with it. He's getting his guys in there. But if Baker is the first pick overall, you're expecting franchise. You're expecting greatness, and he's going to play above all that stuff. I remember with myself that it doesn't matter who I'm playing with, what quarterback I'm playing with. I still have to make plays, and I still have to go out there and make it happen for myself. And Bakers, I don't think he's going to be in that situation. I think Dorsey's going to get him the right players.

They're going to set the right tone, the right mindset, and I think the Cleveland Browns are going to turn this thing around. By the way, Peyton Manning visited Raiders camp, spoke highly of John Gruden. I don't question Gruden's ability to figure out the new NFL. schematically. But 10 years ago, a coach could walk into a locker room and say, no politics. And it was understood. If a coach walked into a locker room today and said, no politics, a third of the locker room would think, racist.

Yeah. It's a different room. Say, Gruden left, and it was the old room. The new room is players want to be heard. I think he struggles potentially with that. I can see that, him too struggling with that. But it is John Gruden. He's got the name.

he's got the prestige he's got the he he's had success in the past his Super Bowl coach it just like Bill Belichick there's no politics going on in there you don't see the guys protesting you don't see the guys acting like that because they respect Bill Belichick and they know it's going to win the only way this goes sour for John Gruden is if they start losing and but I think he's going to have a grace period in his first year which he should he's got to get his guys in there set the tone but I don't I think people respect him enough he's John Gruden he's one of the most popular you know coaches in the NFL now. But you saw at the end of your career, social media was starting to grab

people. It is harder today, right? You saw your last year in the league. Harder. To be strong, defiant as a coach, my way or the highway. It's harder to that. It is so, well, you know what it does? You have to win. You have to win. Once things fall apart, the wheels fall off. I don't care what it is. In the NFL, sports especially, especially. I think you look at what's going on with Pete Carroll now. You think like,

they loved it three years ago. They loved that guy. Now he got ex-player saying, oh, yeah, he's losing his touch. He's losing this. And it, I'm dumbfounded sometimes when I see this, how quickly things can turn and fall off. And that's another reason why I kept my mouth shut too at times, because I knew I didn't want to add to the chaos that was already there.

That's what happens. Well, every locker room, even the good ones, has some chaos. It's going to have chaos, but that's where it's up to the head coach to get it right. And that's why coaches get fired. Some can't handle it. Most of them can't handle it. Very few great coaches out there. By the way, when you were in the NFL, were you ever in a room that just literally went upside down in the year?

Yeah. Yeah. I remember being out at practice where just a melee. The whole team was fighting. I'm talking an all-out, broad. all. In Kansas City. In Kansas City during practice, the receivers against the D.Bs, all 10 receivers against

all 10 DBs, whatever it was, and just where we had to call practice in the middle of a losing season, because everybody's frustrated and everybody's blaming. Everybody's pointing fingers. Dick Vermil was the coach at that point. And he called practice off. Yeah, called practice off. You know, and then, you know, he went around. It's what happens.

When everything's going great, everybody gets all the glory. As soon as it starts going bad, the coach is going to get blamed. The quarterback's going to be blamed. Everybody's going to be pointing fingers, the general manager, he's not making the right choices, yada, yada, yada. And it's just how it goes. When you, um, so last week, Gronk came out and Gronk said, Tom's mellowed. He's not the same. He's different.

And I've read so many stories about people. I remember years ago reading this story about Tom Brokaw when he was 30 and 40. And then one of his kids said, yeah, and then dad hit like 55. and it just, you know, he'd been successful. He'd won awards. His achievements had been lauded. Go back. Was there a point in your career?

I'm not saying you didn't work as hard. Yeah. But that the flip, the switch flipped, that you mellowed. Absolutely. Why? Why did it? Why? I think because you've been around so many times, you don't have to have it all.

When you're young, you're searching for that glory. You're trying to do everything so perfect and so. great and then you realize you don't have to do that. In fact, you're hurting yourself when you do that. You're not having it. Maybe success is probably always going to be the same for Tom, but maybe he's not having as much fun. You start to mellow out. You start

to have a good time a little bit more. I totally agree with that. You get rid of that pressure and things come to you easily. I was not working as hard as I was when I was younger. That's a really good point. Was I telling you this or Goulet this? This show

has gotten easier to me every year. I don't know what it is, but it's like you're almost a quarterback. The show just gets a little easier. And I think that comes with success. You have a great show and you have a great audience. So you know it's like no longer are you trying to prove yourself. You're just enjoying yourself. That's a great way to put it.

I'm just having fun. You're having fun. Look at you. By the way, you are an actor. Yeah. And I watched Mission Impossible this weekend. Listen, I'm not really into the whole Tom Cruise vibe thing. I'm

tired of people saying he can't act. That was one of the best movies. I'm not kidding you. I've ever seen. Have you watched Mission Impossible? My mom told me about it and she said, oh, I loved it. She said it was great. And you're, you, Mr. Hollywood, you're like, no, it's not critically

acclaimed. Have you seen it? I would love to be in Mission Impossible. Let me tell you something. Fantastic. Cruise can't work forever. Joy over here is getting hooty, snooty, She's like, well, I mean, he says it's a top 20 movie of all time.

All time. Your mother loved it. My mother loved it. Your mother has been a rock. It's very good. It's very good. You know what it is? It's mission impossible.

He's doing impossible things. He's given an impossible mission. Should he choose to accept it? He accepts it. And then he saves a day. Sorry, spoil it. That's what it is. You tour a couple of movie snobs.

No, I am not. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't. It was not the franchisee. I really enjoyed it. It's incredible. It's not top 20 movie of all time. Okay, by the way, Hall of Fame this weekend.

Randy Moss went up there, Belichick hugged in, Robert Kraft. You're going to be given this speech in one year. Will you cry? Did you watch the speeches? Will you cry? Of course, I watched the speeches. It was great. Will I cry?

Come on, Tony. I don't think so. I don't think so. You're very emotional. You're very, you're very ethereal. I don't know. Who are you going to thank? Everybody.

Not everybody. I'm not going to go down. I'm going to thank the people that need to be thanked. My mom, my brothers, my wife, my coaches, the coaches I had a chance to play with. Some of the players that I played with. Yeah. Yeah, I'm doing. I was told this years ago, when you do a Hall of Fame speech, have one great story and a funny line to close.

Yeah. And you're like 12 and a half, 15 in. Get out. I have a couple stories that I think I could tell. Yeah. Can you tell me half of one now? No. Oh, dang it.

Why would I tell you? But you got a couple good stories. how hard you work. I got a couple of good stories. I think so. I don't know if I'll have the, I love Ray, but the Janet Jackson microphone

and the work on the stage. That was great. Ray Lewis is exhausting. I mean, it was exactly what Ray Lewis is. Exactly what you thought it was going. He would be sweating. I thought it was great. Totally exhausting.

I will say this. Randy Moss chose to go. T.O. didn't. And I think in the end, like a good movie with a great ending, I think more of Moss than T.O. today. and they were both great, and they both had baggage,

and they were both on five teams. But I think when you go out of these Hall of Fame, it's such a nice way to end your career. Thanking everybody. And bringing it back, it's like with Tom, you mellow out a little bit. Tio hasn't mellowed yet. He's still holding grudges and he's still getting mad about stuff

where Randy's, hey, let's enjoy this time for everybody, because that's what it is. That's what the Hall of Fame is. It's not just about you. It's about me bringing my mom to be around, you know, the Friday night jacket ceremony and my cousins, the people that were there to go be around all these great players

and eat the popcorn and the hot dogs and the parade that they do for the players, like all that stuff that goes into that weekend. T.O. did what you did what you thought you had to do, but geez, I mean, some people missed out. Not just you, maybe, and that's fine. He's okay with it. I really believe he is okay with it.

But the people around him, I think, really missed out on that. event. It would have, it would, it's a special special. I've been three times. Oh, you have? It's a special. Yeah, with Warren Moon, with Michael Strahan, when he went in, and then with, uh, back when I was younger, Marcus Allen, we played in the hall, and he was there. So I was able to see, uh, really what goes into this event. And it's, it's a, it's a special event, not just for the player, more so for this, for his friends and family. So next year, you're eligible. Yeah. Let me read this again. I didn't know this. You know the, you know the two most

amazing things about you, you only missed two games in 17 years. As a tight end, that doesn't make any sense. And you have the second most receptions in league history. I got to be honest with you. I didn't know that. I like you even more now. I'm not going to lie. I like you, but

now I hold you in a different level. Well, hopefully I'll get a movie like Mission Impossible soon and then you'll be even more. I'll like even more. And more. Go see it, America. Don't listen to these hoity-to-y. I did not say go see it. I I said go see it. I'm a critic.

Do you know who produced it? Who? Steve Tisch. Giants. He produced it? Yeah, I think it's one of his movies. He versus a lot of movies. God, it's great.

How was the archieced in the third scene? The Bree cheese says John Malkovich was not in it. It's a good easy watch. There's a scene in Mission Impossible on a cliff that literally I was uncomfortable in my seat with my son. I'm sitting there and I'm like, he's like, dad, it was uncomfortable. It's so frightening. I'm not kidding you.

Cruz is amazing in this thing. He's on clips and he did all the stunts himself. There's no way I can respond to this without spoiling the movie. So I'm just going to let you have that one. The last four minutes of it are literally uncomfortable to watch. You should go see it. After speak for yourself, Go buy it. Take that movie snob with you.

Go take the kids to see The Darkest Mind. We went and saw The Darkest Minds this weekend, too. It's very good. You go see that too. All right. Enough movie talk. So we're just talking about T.O. And he's now possibly forcing some changes at the Hall of Fame. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Hall of Fame is considering a requirement that candidates commit to showing up for the enshriment ceremony before the selection committee makes its final choices. I don't like that.

this is a ridiculous overreaction to this weekend. First of all, I don't think that the ceremony suffered at all without T.O. being there. No. For one. Two, this isn't something that people make a habit of doing. And three, this just makes T.O. look valid in being upset about the process. Now all of a sudden, whether they're going to be there or not for the ceremony is going to weigh in on your decision to put them in. that has something to do with whether they're a Hall of Famer or not.

It seems petty. It's beyond petty. It's ridiculous. It's not, it doesn't even make any sense. It honestly, if they do this, it lessens, it lowers the Hall of Fame. It really does. It's too dramatic of a reaction to what Tio chose to do as a grown man with his own time and his own weekend. He is not required to show up for anything. By the way, if you think about most Hall of Fame, music, football, media, baseball.

they don't have like an insurance salesman and an accountant hall of fame a lot of hall of fames are in industries with divas right musicians actors athletes not that we're all spoiled but it is a kind of self-obsessed living a tunnel career you're going to get some divas you're going to get a few divas i mean like david booey didn't show up to the rock and roll hall of fame kiss didn't show up to the rock and roll hall of fame listen just make it about production are you productive i've worked with people in radio i mean you know i'm I mean, some people, like Howard Stern, literally doesn't leave his house. He doesn't like big groups of people.

Is he not a Radio Hall of Famer? Like, some people are different. Like, you can't expect everybody to just be Joe neighbor and he's got. And let's not pretend like the Hall of Fame is full of a bunch of choir boys or something. I mean, just give me a break with this high and mighty glass house nonsense. Whether they're going to come to the weekend or not, should have no bearing on whether they are a Hall of Famer, whether they should get in that year or not. And for that matter, I really feel like they need to change the voters in the Hall of Fame.

There's no reason that it should be all media voting on who gets in the Hall fame. Split it in half, half media, half Hall of Current Hall of Famers, and rotate it out each year. That keeps the bias out of it and makes it as fair as it can possibly be. You have guys that covered the game and women that have covered the game for decades, and then you have actual Hall of Famers who have played and are in the hall. By the way. It's ridiculous. On media.

In baseball, you basically get into the hall if you reach certain numbers. But in football for an offensive lineman, you don't get numbers. So how does our sports writer vote in a pro bowl lineman? They don't know. They don't understand technique. It's very easy in the NBA. You scored 10,000 points. In baseball, you got 3,000 hits.

But you start getting to certain positions in football, like interior defensive linemen, weak side linebacker, offensive linemen. What do you just go? Well, he made a bunch of pro balls. Like, you can't do that. There are certain things in football that are beyond stats. Right. I just don't think it's rational that the people deciding who get into a Hall of Fame for a sport

are all people that have only watched the sport. Yes. Have some people that have participated in. By the way, the Grammys get voted on by artists, producers, directors, media. It's layered. It's called diversity. Yeah. So the Browns traded a receiver Sunday, but Jarvis Landry wants them to add another.

he's doing a lot of campaigning for the Browns this year and it's now for O'Dell Beckham Jr., who we just talked about, wants to make a deal from the Giants, so let's take a listen. If things like that are able to happen and, you know, the team can make it happen

and, you know, he's happy with it, then, you know, why not? And do you think he would be up for something like that? He definitely would be. He would be. He would be? He would be. He's told you there? We've had talks. But, you know, I mean, at the end of the day, the day, I just want him happy. I want him to get what he deserved.

And you can't put nothing on that, you know, regardless of where is that? That's very selfless of Jarvis. I'll give him that. But he also, remember, he also was campaigning for DES, I believe, last week. Yeah, Cleveland's got, I, there's a lot of, oh, that you're right, they did play. Landry and O'Dell Beckham played at LSU. You're right. I forgot about that. You're right. Do you like it more now that they played LSU together? No, I think it actually matters a little bit.

Yeah. Listen, Cleveland needs to help their quarterback. If you can get Odell and Jarvis Landry, that helps your quarterback. It makes them exponentially more interesting, too. I don't think that matters. Odell Beckham likes New York. I think Odell likes New York. I mean, LeBron moved to L.A. for a reason. He likes the spotlight.

Asking Odell to go to Cleveland, I'm not sure if that play well with him. Well, speaking of Cleveland in the spotlight, Johnny Mansell's CFL career got off to a disastrous start. He threw an interception on his very first pass and four in the first half. Coach Mike Sherman ended up pulling him from the game after just three quarters and here is Johnny after the game. You know, it was just a bad day and those days happened in football and learn from them because I don't want to have this feeling again. It sucks, but nevertheless, I don't think this defines me coming up here as a CFL player. I don't think one game good, bad and different or anything makes your career, you know.

If I would have been judged after one game at Texas A&M, I wouldn't be where I'm at today. And this game humbles you. And it's crazy. And the people who play it, and I just thought to Coach Sherman about this, but these things happen. You either bounce back and come back with a vengeance

or you sit here and let it kill you. I'm not rooting against Johnny Menzell in any way. This is just really unfortunate. Yeah, but I mean, at this point in his career, do you expect a big rebound? Seriously? No, but I don't expect four interceptions in your debut and an interception on your first pass.

And if you watch these interceptions, they are bad interceptions. Those are not good throws. Plus, it's a little awkward since they have a quarterback by committee. They've had four different starting quarterbacks in their first six games, and those other four quarterbacks combined for five interceptions. So he upped their interception total quite a bit. Although quarterback cut by committee is not something that I think you really should ever commit to. That doesn't sound like a good plan.

Maybe I'm being petty. Should he get a shoe guy? I'm just, I don't want to be petty, but I'm just saying I watched it. And I played right to Darnold's brand. The kid played at USC and he's still wearing old vans that look like they're nine years old. Well, maybe that's part of it. You know, he's like, he's playing up the California. He's old school.

Chilling on the beach five. You can't wear jays at the beach. By the way, take a picture of him. He knows who's big and strong looking? I'm just saying. Not like it doesn't matter. Not to be petty about Johnny Mansell, but I thought his performance this weekend in the CFL

deserved what we always do when something special happens in football. It's time for another edition of great moments in quarterbacking. The date, August 3, 2018. After nearly three years away from the game, legendary quarterback Johnny Mansell made his triumphant return in a place known for football, Montreal, Canada. Mansell had only been with his new team for a couple of weeks, so when he took the field that night against the Hamilton Tiger Cats, people were already asking questions like, what the hell is a tiger cat? But Mansell quickly proved that he hadn't lost a step when on his very first throw, he dropped back and did what he does best. tossing an ill-advised pass that nobody on his team had a remote chance of catching.

Mansell didn't stop there, throwing four picks in the first half alone, as his team went on to lose a close one, 50 to 11. While people might eventually forget the outcome, nobody will forget the night that Johnny Mansell proved he's worthy of wearing the number emblazoned across his chest. The number two. This has been great moments in quarterbacking. Was that petty? That was petty for sure.

It was the first one petty. I wouldn't classify the first one as petty more so. It was more an observation. I would say this.
