Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

Starting point is 00:03:01 Hi, everybody. You know who I am. Wow. Wow. Not only did the Warriors blow a 12.4th quarter lead. Al Horford, five-time All-Star Al Hortford, college All-American Al Hortford, going to make the Hall of Fame, Al Horford, put on a clinic. And if you're the Celtics tonight, Tatum didn't play well.
Starting point is 00:03:37 You had a seven-minute lull in the third that was as bad, as clunky as your offense could be. Now, we get a little bit of that, obviously, with the Celtics. They're going to give you that. They can be a little inartistic offensively. But that may be the worst quarter in five years in a playoff game for the Warriors at home. That may be. But you've got to give, listen, we can't just say it's a bad quarter for the Warriors. They didn't get a ton of great looks.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Jason Timp, host of hoops tonight at the volume, who's just been a home run higher for us. I'm not going to say I'm surprised the Celtics won. This is a really capable team. We think they're the better defensive team. But if you had told me Jason Tatum played poorly, and you trailed by 12 entering the fourth, and you blew them out, a little bit of a jaw dropper.
Starting point is 00:04:35 That fourth quarter, to me, that is, what did I just watch? That's how it lands for me. Like, what did I just watch? There was a very basic defensive scheme adjustment in the early portion of the fourth quarter that I thought turned that game around. And I was blown away. When I was doing my prep for this series, when I was watching the film, what I was blown away by was how often Boston ran what's called a drop coverage against Golden State with them coming off of their screens at the top. They would have Horford or Robert Williams or whatever sag back. And because of how good Golden State is at screening,
Starting point is 00:05:15 the guys were just coming off and getting wide open shots. That's how Steph had 21 first quarter points was he was just coming off of those screens wide open. I was jaw dropped watching the game at the nonsensical defensive strategy from Boston. Then they take Robert Williams out. They're in the early fourth quarter and they start switching everything. And suddenly it becomes who on Golden State can create their own shot. And they were sending just enough help to Steph to dissuade him from getting to his spots and rotating out of it. And all of a sudden, it looked like Golden State had an offensive creation problem, which is why I've always been such a big believer in switching from the beginning.
Starting point is 00:05:54 But it was amazing to see how that little tweak there in the middle of the fourth quarter put Boston's defense at such a huge advantage. And, you know, one of the things I put in my notes, calling in the middle of this game. And I'm sure you could pick it up. Because when you're watching Golden State play Dallas, you're sitting there thinking, oh, like, they don't have the personnel. Like, you can talk about them missing shots. You can talk about some things not going their way.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Luca didn't have a good series. But also, you're like, Golden State's just better. Like, they got better players. They've better basketball players on both ends of the floor. About halfway through that game, I put in my notes, like, Boston has the personnel to hang in this series. This is not a talent mismatch. Golden State's advantage is experience,
Starting point is 00:06:41 and they do have a little bit better offensive personnel. But there was always, I thought that it was immediately apparent that Boston had enough players to hang in this series. And so it would come down, like we've always said, to their execution and their game plan. And I thought it was absolutely imperative for Boston to close this game, because I don't think they'll shoot this. well again, maybe not in this series. So it's just one of those things where I thought that
Starting point is 00:07:08 was, this was a game. They had to win under the circumstances with how well they shot and they pulled it off. Yeah. I mean, listen, Tatum was ineffective. Jordan Poole was awful. Like he was hurting them when he was on the floor. So I thought Jordan really poorly. He was, I mean, I think he had the worst plus minus in the game tonight. Whereas I think Tatum was just kind of, you know, Tatum's an interesting player. I had said this on Fox Sports today. that, you know, Tatum will say things that like a Michael Jordan or a LeBron or a D. Wade would never say, which is, you know, when people were questioning us early in the season, I didn't know if I was really the guy to lead us. You know, I had a lot of doubts. And I'm like, you can think that. Don't say it.
Starting point is 00:07:50 You know, like, don't say it. And I feel that sometimes with Jason Tatum. I watch him. And I was telling a friend of mine watching the game tonight in the living room. I said, if Tatum doesn't have a, and he's not a great ball. handler. He can get sloppy. He's not great ball handler. If he doesn't get like an angle on you or beat you off the first dribble or two and the game is tight, like he'll pull up and get rid of the ball. Like he, there is a little bit, he loses confidence, I think, not in himself, but his ball handling. And he doesn't get that good first step on you. And tonight a couple of times, he didn't. And he just didn't want it. He had very few shots in the first half. We saw this in game six. He had 12 shots the whole game. So he's just one of the those players, whereas Steph will back out, come at you again. We'll back out, we'll go it again. Like, Steph's going to figure out a way to get past you. He's relentless. He's relentless. Jason Tatum's not. And, but tonight when Derek White and Al Horford are hitting those shots, you know, we've always known this. When Marcus Smart scores 20 plus, Boston doesn't lose. Tonight, Al Horford was the Marcus Smart. I mean, it was nobody sees Al
Starting point is 00:09:01 Horford hitting six threes. So it was all these, you know, it was all these kind of, not role players, but it, you know, when you've got, first of all, that's about as well, I bet if you went back this season, is any team shot the basketball for a seven-minute stretch, anybody, any game all season. Sometimes they just fall. I mean, that just, I don't want to be too simplistic, but sometimes when all your role guys are hitting threes, it's not your night. You know, it's golden, looked up and it's like Boston under seven-minute lull, Golden State did. Golden States came at the end of the game. That's the difference. And, you know, they were open shots, though, for the most part.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Like, that's the wild part. Like, you know, Golden State demonstrated in the Dallas series that their strategy was going to be, send the kitchen sink at Luca and leave the shot result to these role players hope they choke under the pressure. And they did. And, you know, that's the game that they played again tonight with Boston. It just so happens that they went in. I mean, with exception of that Derek White pull-up three where he kind of hesitated and then Steph kind of jumped up on his right side and he just elevated it over the top
Starting point is 00:10:11 and knocked it down. With exception of that one, most of them were pretty damn good looks, which is kind of the nature of that offense. Now, they're going to go through stretches where they don't shoot well. But if you're Golden State, I think you look at the game plan and you say, we did what we were supposed to do. We made role players make shots. It just so happens that Derek White and Al Horford made 10-3s.
Starting point is 00:10:30 What are you going to do? Whereas with the Boston thing, you look at the game plan and it's like, no, no, no, we actually can't just let Steph Curry and Clay Thompson come off a screens wide open all series. They'll make them every game. So, like, I think that's where if you're Boston, you've got to be feeling so good right now because there's just this easy adjustment sitting right there, like start switching more, stop letting these guys come off these screens open. Whereas with Golden State, it's like you kind of have to live with the result.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Now, another thing for Golden State, Boston doesn't play well at home. Their role players don't shoot well at home. So home court doesn't mean as much in this series as it does in another series. So I would still, I never want to overreact to a game one. I would still feel good if you're Golden State. They shot you out of the arena that happens. But make no mistake, this is not Dallas. This is a good personnel team.
Starting point is 00:11:14 And Tatum is not the first guy to struggle under the scope and the scale of the NBA finals in his first time in that environment. He better. So Golden State is going to have to understand that this is a long series. This is a dock fight. They're going to have to beat Boston. Boston's not going to beat themselves. Yeah, I mean, these look like the two best teams in the league for most of the game.
Starting point is 00:11:36 The other thing is Dallas got open looks, but I always feel, Jason, when you have a high ball usage player like a Luca or a Hardin, you do become an observer at times. I kind of feel like with Boston, the role players, even when they're not scoring, they feel it's, it's, it's a It's a very inclusive offense, is that, you know, Tatum will have 12 shots in a huge game. Tatum tonight stepped out. I always feel like the role players for Boston are ready to shoot. Sometimes you get into that space with the Mavericks, you know, or Westbrook in his prime or Hardin in his prime. And those role players, I mean, you're on the court and you're cold. Like, you're doing nothing.
Starting point is 00:12:22 You're watching. That could be a Kobe issue at times. You're just kind of sitting around watching. I don't know. When I, you know, you study more tape than I do, but when I watch Boston's role guys, I always think they feel ready to get a shot. I think it's a very inclusive offense.
Starting point is 00:12:37 And a lot of that is, maybe it's the weakness I talk about Tatum, is that he's not a guy. Like, if he gets cut off, he'll get rid of the ball. A lot of times he'll just get rid of the ball. So it's not an offense where your best player is, you're watching him. I never feel like that with Boston. Now, they don't move like Golden State.
Starting point is 00:12:59 But, you know, the other thing that helps, when you're four or five best players, most of them have been playing together for years, like you have seven-minute lulls. Like Boston kind of, they're very comfortable with what they are. They have a seven-minute lull tonight, and I'm like, I'm with a Celtic fan, and I'm like, this is what they do when they win.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Like, this is who they are. They know what. So, like, I'm sitting there in a seven-minute lull, and I'm like, yeah, they're down, like, they're down eight. They're okay. This thing you're hitting on with the difference between Boston and Dallas is so important. And there's two elements to it. And a lot of this has to do with the way teams are put together.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Because don't get me wrong, there is a heliocentric element to the Luca thing and the James Hardin thing where guys stay cold. And you're absolutely right. Like when you don't touch the basketball for a while and it gets in your hands, it just feels weird. Like I had a similar issue in some years that I spent when I was playing in college. It's just when your role shifts to the point where you don't have the basketball in your hands all the time. it's just really hard to get it and do something with it. But there's a Ross, you know, one of the things that I think a lot of analytically minded GMs will focus on is like,
Starting point is 00:14:05 oh, if I have this superstar fulcrum in Hardin or Luca, all I need to do is put guys that can shoot threes around him because if I drive and kick to the shooters, they'll get open looks, they'll make defenses pay for helping. But there's a huge difference between that and having a system where you have four, five, six guys that can all score the basketball. because that's the difference between a heliocentric system and a drive-and-kick system. When Boston gets into their real groove, it's everyone's touch in the basketball.
Starting point is 00:14:33 It's Tatum creating the initial advantage or Jalen Brown creating the initial advantage that gets the defense to collapse. When the defense collapse, you kick it out, now they're closing out. And because they're closing out an inferior player like a Derek White or a Marcus Smart, because he's given that advantage, can further extend the advantage by punishing that close-out. And then they'll do that two or three times. Next thing you know, someone is completely wide open at the three point line. It's one of the things that teams got to look at when they're constructing rosters. Like you are more likely to have guys stay in a rhythm when everyone's involved in a driving kick type of system than when they're all just standing around waiting to shoot catch and shoot threes.
Starting point is 00:15:14 You know, I don't want to make any excuses because Boston was great tonight. But I did feel like, I bet the Celtics plus the points in the first half tonight. I said, it's just, you see this sometimes in baseball where you play every day, every day, every day, you get to the postseason, you wrap up a series early and guys don't play for six games. Like, when you're playing well, baseball players don't want six days off, especially when the weather cools. So you play in the summer all year, a day off is all you get. And you get to the cool weather over October and you have six days off. I thought Wiggins, Draymond, and Pool looked off. I thought, and now, Steph is such a brilliant ball handler.
Starting point is 00:15:52 I mean, he never, he never looks. I mean, even when he's not shooting well, he's just got it. He's like, he's art. But I thought Wiggins looked off offensively. Draymond struggled. Pool was awful. And it's not an excuse, but man, they had a lot of time. And you can't replicate that stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:13 And again, I think Steph is so gifted naturally, offensively, he gets back into it really fast. But one of the reasons I thought Boston would keep it close and when the first half was, they just got out of a, I think we overrate when a team plays a seven-game series and they have less rest. It's like, these are 24-year-old guys. In college, I was 22.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I could rip an ankle up. Two days later, I was playing in the gym. I could have a hangover. 24-year-old guys rebound quickly. The Lakers this year do not rebound. But let's not, these are the world's best athletes. with four days rest. So I did feel like, you know, if you take away
Starting point is 00:16:57 Kerr's shooting, just that dimension, just Kerr shooting, I thought the Warriors look clunky a little bit offensively tonight. That's what I thought. They absolutely did. It's one thing when it's a 36 hour turnaround where fatigue can play a role, but when one team has three days off and the other has seven days off, I think that's a big advantage to the team that has three days off. Because you're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:17:19 You're in a rhythm. you're in a groove. Your defensive habits are settled. You know, you're conditioned so you're not caught off guard by the intensity. And, you know, also, Colin, I think a huge factor here that people were glossing over is the massive increase in defensive personnel they were going against. So for the record, Dallas was a good defense. From January 1st to the end of the year, they were fourth in defensive rating, which is points allowed per 100 possession. So they were a very good defense, but it was very smoke and mirrors.
Starting point is 00:17:48 A lot of credit to Jason King. getting the guys to buy in, and outside of Luca, getting a lot of guys that are career bad defenders to commit to the defense event. And they were able to fabricate what appeared to be a functional defense in the regular season, that Golden State resoundingly exposed. Boston is a monstrous defensive personnel team. And it's such an adjustment going from one level of athlete guarding you to an entirely other level of athlete.
Starting point is 00:18:19 I joke all the time with my wife. Like, I used to playing college, but right now I just play against amateurs. But every summer, all the guys who are playing professionally or are playing in college come back home to visit their families and they work out with me. And every time, it's such like the first couple of days I'm working out with them. I'm like, man, I totally forgot what it's like to have a six, seven athlete, you know, up in your business when you're trying to make moves. You know, and usually after a couple of days, I get used to it and then I'm in the flow again.
Starting point is 00:18:44 But like, I was really, really interested to see how Golden State would be caught off by Boston's defensive intensity. Now, they had a ton, Boston, this, again, Boston did not play well in the first half. It was, like, they shot well, but their defense was horrific. They had numerous breakdowns. Like, Steph Curry should not be getting wide open 10 times in the first quarter. Yeah, I put this down. I said both teams are allowing too many threes.
Starting point is 00:19:11 The difference is the way the Warriors play sometimes, Dallas got a lot of open threes against the Warriors. The Warriors will give you open threes. Boston generally doesn't, but that was one of my notes, is that they were getting penetration, they were getting great looks. So for the record, I do think the way the Warriors play, they're so fluid. I think it's hard to catch up to that initially. Boston's usually a better first quarter team than the Warriors.
Starting point is 00:19:36 I think there's like, I mean, listen, Steph got three great open looks. I think he hit two or all three of them. I think the Warriors are, you know, it's like Mike Tyson. you watch Mike Tyson, then you get hit by Tyson. You're like, oh, it's a whole different ball game. When you play the Warriors, the way they move, I don't care if you play them in the regular season. You're at Chase, it's loud. You can get rattled really easy with the Warriors early.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Well, what was crazy is in that first quarter, there were plays where Boston just got lost in the Golden State Blender. And that's bound to happen. I put that in my series preview. It was like, I expect Golden State to get a certain amount of dunks and layups in open three. just because they'll run some crazy herky-jurkey three-man action that they'll botch a switch and get an open shot. But there were like just downright breakdowns in that first quarter from Boston. We're like once in transition, in transition. Steph is dribbling the ball up the court and nobody picks him up and he steps into a three and makes it.
Starting point is 00:20:33 There was a baseline out of bounds play where they ran a basic box set and Clay Thompson just set a back screen for Andrew Wiggins. And Boston just completely botched it. Andrew Wiggins got a layup. And I'm sitting there like, man, like Boston. just doesn't look sharp. And that's why I was saying, like, you have to win this game. Because with how well you shot and with the mistakes you made early, if you could somehow put this as a notch in the win column, because you said in your notes, they were, both teams were given up too many open threes. Key detail. Like you said, the threes golden state were giving up were by design.
Starting point is 00:21:06 That's the way their scheme is supposed to work. Boston was giving up open threes by making mistakes. And that's the scary thing if you're a Golden State fan right now, because Boston's going to go look at the film and they're going to say, we can clean this up. With Golden State, it's like, okay, if we start taking away the Horford and Derek White threes, we're going to start giving Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown slashing opportunities to the rim, because that's the tradeoff. When you help into the paint, you can take away the slashing opportunities, but you give up the threes. You start taking away the threes, the paints open and guys can get into the lane. So, I mean, I really think it's this simple for Golden State. You continued with your current scheme and you just
Starting point is 00:21:44 executed better and you just hope that Boston misses some shots at some point. You know, I also put this down. It was like I have a, I have a bunch of notes here. I just scribble. I just a bunch of notes. It's a lot of notes. It's a lot of notes boxed and circled and starred. This doesn't feel like much tonight. And Boston fans were probably complaining about what I was what I'm about to say. But I think it's an edge to Boston. The refs let them play. And Boston fans, there were some calls that felt like, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:19 it's a little bit of a call at Chase. But if the refs are consistent with that and they also let them be physical at home, it feels like an edge of the Celtics. I thought there was a lot of contact tonight, which, by the way, as a consumer, I'd rather watch that. These are pro athletes. Let them play. There's a lot of contact at the rim.
Starting point is 00:22:42 No calls. Now, if you're a Celtic fan, when you're trailing, you're like, this is, this is awful. I'm like, no, no, this is the series you wanted. This is what you wanted is to let you touch and bang on staff. And even he may said it when they went to him in the first quarter. He's, you know, Lisa Salter's like, what do you got to do better? He's just, we just got to get more physical. We just got to get more physical.
Starting point is 00:23:03 And the rest let them. And so if the rest, you know, because what fans, What drives fans nuts isn't allowing physical play is when you don't allow it consistently. So if that's the series, that's kind of an edge for Boston to me. Absolutely. They're bigger. They're the bigger team. Like, I mean, the story with the Warriors throughout their entire existence is they're pretty much the smaller team in every matchup. They're just so good at what they do that you can't beat them, right? But what are the two teams that have successfully beat the Warriors in the finals in this era?
Starting point is 00:23:40 I have a Cleveland Cavaliers team that had the best small forward of all time, right, in LeBron James, who bullied them, essentially, and Tristan Thompson, who destroyed them inside with his, with his physicality. Kevin Love had some big rebounding games in that series as well. They were a big, strong team that punished Golden State in a fist fight. And they were super physical with Steppe. They were super physical with Clay. It gave him a lot of issues. Toronto, same thing.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Huge physical wing in Kauai Leonard. Lots of bigger wings like Pascal Seyakum. They were a massive team, right? And so this, now, it's always easier said than done. And there are lots of big teams that have lost to Golden State along the way. But this is how you beat them. You beat them by being bigger than them, winning all the physicality elements of the game, and having a big forward that can consistently create advantages for you,
Starting point is 00:24:32 like Kauai and LeBron did. So, I mean, obviously tonight that was Jalen Brown, who was just unfreaking believable, especially at the start of the fourth quarter to get them back into that game. But this is the blueprint. You know, I'm never going to jump off a pick after one game. I'm still on Golden State to win this series in seven. But, I mean, if you're a Boston fan, you should absolutely feel like you have a chance. You should absolutely feel like you have the talent advantage.
Starting point is 00:24:53 You should absolutely like you. You should like exactly where you are at this point. Think about this. I wrote this down. This is incredible. The Celtics had 26 points in the first seven minutes of the fourth. That's a 50 point quarter. That's incredible.
Starting point is 00:25:12 So I'm with you. Listen, I have the Warriors, one of the things I preached on the air today, I'm not going to have a definitive opinion after game one. The things that jump out to me, the refs let them play. If that stays consistent, That's an edge for Boston and Tatum played poorly and they won going away. You got to feel good. I mean, listen, when you came out here, you didn't think you were going to sweep the Warriors at Chase.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Like you're trying to get a W. Think about this. The danger facing Boston is they do get tight. How loose will they be in game two? How loose will Boston be? John, done. I mean, so you're feeling great. Totally with house money.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Yeah. No, absolutely. And just in general, if you're Boston, like the way you've got to look at it is you know that the downsides are coming. Like, I mean, you've talked about this a lot on your show. Boston, when they got it going offensively, they're confident. They lock in. They're focused. They don't make mistakes. And they can be incredibly difficult to beat. I've said many times on my show that I think Boston's best punch is better than any. anybody's best punch in the league because of what they can do on defense. But I've seen this so many times where they shoot like this. Horford had a 30-point game in the Milwaukee series, and then they went and lost game five at home. So the point is, is like, if you're Golden State, Boston has shown you who they are. They are going to have lulls, extensive lulls.
Starting point is 00:26:50 And so you have to capitalize on those moments. It's just the difference is, is now you've got to get one in game three or game four. All right. Jason Timp hoops tonight. He's fantastic. I got his tape. Let's see, what was your first day you started? You're probably better at this than me now.
Starting point is 00:27:07 February 1st. Look at that. So I remember getting your tape and people talking, there's this guy. He covers the Lakers. He's really good, knows his hoops, played it. And I was just telling one of our executives today, I said, is anybody over-delivered like Jason? I said the guy is opinionated, hardworking, really knows his hoops.
Starting point is 00:27:35 And this has been a classic kind of a display of what you do. So hoops tonight, follow him on Twitter. He's fantastic. And listen, I haven't even put the good stuff in this drink yet. So now we're going to sit out. I would, you know, it's funny, I'm going to do a Red Arbock. I'm going to go have a victory cigar, even though I picked the Warriors. It's great having you in.
