Hi, everybody, and welcome in the Rams win the Super Bowl. on a game in which I thought both defensive lines really dictated style of play. I thought the Rams were the best team in the first quarter and most of the last quarter. I thought the Bengals were the much better team, especially on offense in the second and third quarters. The Rams had a really rough second half for most of it offensively. And what I wondered watching it was they were on a third string tight end. They had a rookie from Notre Dame at wide receiver, a fourth string wide receiver in the game. They could not run the ball.

And I wondered if McVeigh was protecting Stafford to some degree because he didn't want him to just drop play after play after play. He wanted to establish some commitment to the run. But, you know, when I look at the Rams this year, I think about resilience. They lose Robert Woods. They lost Cam Acres. They lost some offensive linemen. here in the Super Bowl, it's Tyler Higbee, it's OBJ. It was an incredibly resilient team,

and they asked a lot of players who weren't playing to step up in key moments. A lot of credit to Cincinnati, their defensive line, and we knew it was good. It worked the Rams offensive line, perhaps not in past protection, but certainly in the run game. But I thought the game came down to, you know, a handful of moments. I thought the title. Boyd drop in the fourth quarter was a huge break for the Rams.

And then on fourth and one, on the subsequent drive, Cooper Cup gets the ball. And they really, he ends up being MVP. They really focused on Cooper Cup. I mean, at that point, you know, when you miss a PAT early, everybody talks about the effect of the PAT. but the advantage for the Rams missing the PAT is that trailing by four, they had to be more aggressive on their final drive.

And so, you know, my takeaway is the Rams were going to go for it. The Rams are going to pass more. They got out of the run game, some short passing, some rolling out. The knock on McVanus for Super Bowl is that he comes in with a game plan. He doesn't necessarily adapt to it. Now, some people could say, you know, Goff didn't have the encyclopedic knowledge or the years in the league like Stafford. There were limitations against the Patriots in that Super Bowl. But I thought you got to give McBan the Rams credit on that final drive.

They had time. This was not a under two-minute drill situation for most of it. They could have run the ball. They didn't. They moved the pocket several times. They had key players in motion. They ran a couple of plays they hadn't earlier. They focused in on Cooper Cubs.

They evolved and adapted on that final drive. And, you know, in their previous six or seven drives, they didn't do anything. So there was a sense of urgency. They bailed on the run game. They moved Stafford around in the pocket, rolling him out. And they went all in on Cooper Cup. So that was the adapt. That was, you know, moving off what your modus operandi had been for the previous six or seven drives.

So I think McVeigh deserves credit for that. Listen, these are two different. different teams. When I think about the bingles, I think about a young team, best years ahead of it, a handful of stars, very youthful, only one player with Super Bowl experience, even a young coach. When I think of the Rams, I think of more stars, 10 players with Super Bowl experience, a head coach with Super Bowl experience. The head coach is the mentor to the younger Zach Taylor. I felt like the Rams were the better team. And for most of this game, even when they trail. I kind of felt like, get Stafford the ball, get it to them late, give him two

and a half minutes because Stafford led the NFL in fourth quarter passer rating and second half pass rating the entire season. So the one thing you really have to acknowledge here, and you can get into the petty calls late, but holdings holding in those situations, referees are going to call it if your hands are on the body. They just are. You know, a boxing official, a boxing ref in the ring is going to call it differently. at the last couple of rounds in the last 45 seconds. Okay, that's the reality. Conference finals games in the NFL and NBA, refs swallow the whistle.

Finals games, NBA, Super Bowl, refs swallow the whistle. But when you get down to a minute and a half left, they're going to call tic-tacked-up. This is the season. These are the moments. It's situational officiating, seen it my entire life. So I didn't have a problem. I thought the refs had a big miss on the T. Higgins touchdown. where he grabbed the face mask of Jalen Ramsey, but it happens.

I'm not going to complain about it. It happens. It was a huge game-altering play. And I thought the holding calls in the end, some could say tic-a-tack, they're situational. You're going to call those. But I think when I look at the Rams, I look at them differently than I do Cincinnati. First of all, McVeigh is not going to retire. It's absolute nonsense.

He's trying to get a contract extension. His last contract negotiation was rough and he didn't get what he wanted. Stan Cronkey, the owner is a tough negotiator. By the way, less need. The GM of the Rams is paid significantly less than somebody with his resume. McVeigh is paid significantly less than somebody with his resume. Aaron Donald is not going to retire. I'm not sure where everybody's getting these stories.

I'll ask Akib to leave about Aaron Donald, but I don't buy it. I just think Aaron Donald's too good. He's too passionate. He loves the game. He's hyper competitive. you can see when guys, you can hear when guys are done with the game. I don't think Aaron Donald's retiring. But I look at these two teams differently.

I think the best days of the Bengals are obviously ahead. I think the division now, we don't know what Cleveland's going to do eventually at quarterback or the Steelers. I think Cincinnati could dominate their division for years. You know, the Rams were in a tougher division. My guess is if Pete Carroll doesn't win this year, Russell Wilson will get an offensive coach in Seattle. Kyle Murray.

The Niners Kyle Shanahan has had McVey's number for most of it. I think it'll be a tougher ask to get the Rams back into the Super Bowl because it's hard. L.A., people get gassed up. They get endorsements. I think they're in a tougher division. And I think Shanahan is arguably the first or second best young coach in football and McVeigh's first or second. So, you know, if you'd have put Andy Reed and Bill Belichick's division, you know, for decade. Bill Belichok's not winning all those divisions, not getting home field, not getting

a buy, and some years not getting out of it. So it's not that the Rams won't be really good, but that division, I think, is only getting better. Trey Lance has the chance to be an upgrade over Jimmy G. Kyler Murray, despite what you're reading this weekend, he's coming back to Arizona. Russell Wilson will eventually, if he stays, get an offensive coach. And I'm not saying the tarmac doesn't have some length to it. But I could see Cincinnati dominating. their division for most of the next 10 years with Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor. And those receivers? Absolutely.

You know what's funny about these Super Bowls? If the Rams didn't drive for the winning touchdown, the story would have been McVeigh's insistence on running the football in the second half, right? Like narratives change based on the outcome, but the winners write the final chapter. And I kept thinking in the second half, the story's going to be McVeigh and his sort of stubborn rigidity running the ball on second and three, turning it into third and six and third and seven over and over and over again. But, you know, Stafford changes all that. That's why they upgraded. And I also think what you see with Stafford, and I hope this is not undersold,

third string tight end, a four string wide receiver in, no Higbee in the Super Bowl, OBJ out at half time. Those are significant losses. They couldn't even use their backup tied end. He had a shoulder injury. You're talking about these are timing routes, timing positions, and he's going to third and four string guys. That is a big ask against a defense in Cincinnati. We all got to be honest here. That pass rush gave the Rams more trouble than I think, certainly I predicted. You know, the story of the game going in was the Rams defensive line, and it was an issue. I mean, Aaron Donald in the second half was unblocked. But the Bengals, I thought, did just about as impressive a job, especially from the edges on Matt Stafford against the tackles against the Rams, the strength of their offensive line.

So I think the best team won. I'm not going to get too much into the calls. Riffs whiffed on one in the first half against the Bengals and the holding stuff deep in the red zone. They're going to call that stuff. They're just going to call that in that situation. So Akeeb Taleb, the multiple time pro bowl are going to get a lot of Hall of Fame votes. Let's get to him. All right, Akeb.

My first takeaway, let's go to the final drive of the game. Listen, Stafford had the highest passer rating in the NFL this year in the second half and fourth quarter. So he and Cup do what they do. What I think is interesting, they were using a third string tied end and had a fourth string wide receiver on the game. And I think that that's important because this game's all about timing. Right. And I thought that part of the game we weren't talking about enough. They had a Notre Dame rookie on the field.

He didn't play during the season. I mean, I will say this. The final drive to me was pretty damn clutch. I mean, how did you see? And then you see what he resorted to, right? He ain't go to the guy or every guy you named, he ain't throw them guys to ball. He went straight to Cooper Cup. I don't care.

I know you double team. You just got to win. And he trusts the Cooper Cup. Cooper Cup won them Roads for him, man. That was huge. Even on the holding calls, those were real holds.

Cooper Cup made you hold him. He crossed his face. 55 had to hold him. Eli Apple had to grab him, I hold him or he would have scored or he would have won those rocks, man. So Cooper Cup won for him. You know, it's interesting.

Some people will complain about the holding call on Logan Wilson, but my takeaway, in a situation like that, regardless of how the game has been called, he had his hands all over him. Right. I mean, it's holding, man. Hey, it's, if you let them, if you don't get your body over there and stop them with your body,

with your body positioned, then it's holding, man. If you cross your face and you got to grab them in order to pull yourself back through, it's holding. And they got to call that. So they caught it, it was a holding. When you played in the league, and I went on Twitter and I said, listen, it's the season. I would hold two.

Like, I would rather hold and you not get a touchdown. Like, if you've been in situations where you don't have an option, Hey, it's part of the game. Sometimes you've got to hold. Sometimes you got to hold and give them a fresh set of downs and stand up three more times. So you got to win to your leverage. That's what you got to do, Colin. You don't win to your leverage, then bad things happen.

So, you know, it's funny. I thought the Rams were the better team early and the better team late. But I will say this about Cincinnati. Yeah. But I thought Cincinnati in the second and third quarters really looked very, very comfortable. Did you notice how quickly. Burrow. You can see the game plan by Cincinnati. Get rid of the ball quickly. Did you notice that? I did. Burrow, man, he executed. You kind of, you had to know that was the game plan, right? We know y'all coming. We know y'all like to bring that one extra lineback and put him one-on-one with a running back.

That's one-on-one that's one-on-one with the running back. So you got to know that coming in. Burrow and them knew that. They definitely got the ball out fast, man. So that's really how they won all this playoffs is getting the ball out fast. and countering that blitz. So they definitely got out and did that Joe Burrow. Look good, right, Colin? Well, you know, the thing I like about Burrow, first of all, he got smoked. I can't believe he came back and played Akib.

I thought he was out. Oh, man, it bent the wrong. It was the high ankle sprain being too, Colin. That's the bad. Matt Stafford had the good being. Like, okay, that's the basketball role when it been the regular way. When it been the way Joe Burrow bent,

you usually don't come back from that. So that's just kudos to Joe Burrow. Man, that thing going to be sorry. might be some good damage to that thing. You know, I thought one of the plays of the game, Tyler Boyd dropped that ball over the middle. Yeah. They get a first down. Right.

That third down? Yep. Yeah. I mean, that was one of those. Tyler Boyd never drops the ball. Now, he didn't have Jamar Chase his speed. He doesn't have the size of T. Higgins. Right.

He's got good hands. That was a good hands, man. He usually make those plays. And up until his point, he has made those plays. But, man, them opportunities get bigger and bigger, man. That's that clock wind down. And he heard them footsteps, Colin. He heard them footsteps.

He let it go, man. That was a key point in the drive. That was one of the stops that defense got. That defense got a three or four big stops in a row. You know what I'm saying? And that was one of them right there. Did you feel before the- Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.

So my takeaway, everybody kept saying it's going to be a blowout. And I was like, come on, man, this team's in field goal games. Right. But by the end of the game, I will say this. I thought the Bengals defensive front was better than I thought. Yeah, they defense. And then the thing about it, Colin, they don't rotate, man. They had those guys in there, read or play.

and Hubbard and Hedrickson, they played a whole game and they don't rotate, man. So I thought they was going to get war out. They definitely didn't get war out, man. They stood up. They stopped that run all day. It was a nice, it was, I didn't think it would be a blowout to your question. I don't think it would, I didn't think it would be a blowout, but I thought the Rams might win by five to seven at the end. That's not really a blowout, but that's a, that's not a game winning field goal like it was.

So it was closer than I thought it was personally, and I thought it was going to be. They had a lot of second. That's surprising too. That surprised me a lot, Colin. Couldn't run it at all. At one point they had 18 carries and 22 yards. Right. So I thought it was interesting.

About three or four straight drives in the second half. The Rams would be on a second and four, run it and be on a third and seven. And it was almost as if McVeigh was saying, listen, we just, it's either he didn't trust Stafford. Yeah, I kept thinking to myself, McVeigh's thinking, listen, we're on a third string tied end. I got a four string running back. I got no OBJ. The timing's not going to be good. The pass rush for the bingles is good. I kind of felt a key a little bit in the second half that McVeigh was protecting Stafford. Am I wrong? Well, I mean, they ran the ball 23 times. That's not, that's not too many. I thought the number

was 30. I thought they had to run the ball 30 times to win the game. I thought late in the game, though, they stuck to that run. They didn't just go super pass happy. But I want to say protect him, man. He really couldn't protect him. Stafford had to, he had to make throws, man. He made key throws tonight, especially on that last game, winning drive. I thought he made throws, man. I don't think, I don't think McVeigh protected him. I don't know about that one, Colin, man. I thought he did a good job sticking to the run.

He got that number up to 23. I think late in the third quarter, that number was like 14 or 13 or something. And he got it up to 23. So he stuck with the run. I don't know if he protected him, man. Stafford played his butt off, man. He made throws. You know what's funny?

For years and years, Stafford led the NFL in, like, comeback wins. But people would always say, well, Detroit's always behind. Yeah. But Atlanta's behind a lot. Matt Ryan's not getting all those come from behind winning. I honestly, I will say this. I mean, I watch Rams games like you, or excuse me, I watch Lions games like you. Stafford is a better fourth quarter quarterback than I thought. I can totally say it now. I mean, I always thought he had a good arm. I always thought, I mean, he made throws. But until you watch him, he just zones in. He definitely proved something to me. I was, I was big on. He probably, could hear me on your show, probably saying winning is a skill and I don't know if he got it.

He got a fool for us that he got it. You know what I'm saying? And games like this, man, situation, winning a tournament like this, you're proving the people that you got it, man. Now you win one, right? You get in the conversation with guys who won one. Now if you be one of the guys who win two, now you start talking Hall of Fame and, you know, stuff like that.

So, man, listen, hey, hey, he definitely proved a lot of people wrong, man. he showed he could win big games. And I'm happy for Matt Stamford, man, because he worked his butt off. He's a great leader. He deserved it. By the way, there was a discussion before the game. Rodney Harrison said,

Aaron Donald, if he wins a ring, may retire. And I thought, damn, he's a best D tackle in the game by a mile. I don't know if I, I mean, seriously, I don't know. If I was McVeigh, I would go to him and just say a key, I just say, dude, I'm going to give you no pads during practice during the season. Man. I don't know. I don't know if I could lose that guy. I think I would go to him to say, listen, what do you want to stay? Yeah. I think me personally just being around AD too much, I don't know where Rodney Harrison got it from, but he loved it too much, man. He's so competitive. He's the most competitive guy on a team. He'll sit at home one year. Oh, he'll be back the next year. So, I mean, if you take a year off, he'd take a year off. But, hey, AD, the most competitive guy, he'll miss it too much.

So tell me about it. I mean, obviously he's got great speed for his size, but just his personality. What's it like in the locker room? Man, he's just a regular guy. You know, he really, he's not one of the louder guys in the locker room. He's just, you know, he, AD, man. He's going to chime in on a few jokes.

A.D. ain't the loudest guy in a locker room, man. But he lead the building and effort, man. He's the last one out of the locker room. And I'm not just saying this. He's the last one out of the weight room. and the first one in the wayroom after practice getting extra work. So he's super good at leading by example, man. He's going to show you the work that I put in.

He was a great route runner, always faster than people thought. Your takeaway on what makes Cooper Cup a pain in the butt to defend? I think it's at the top of his routes. He got about three or four different moves at the top of his route. So he could run a corner, he could run a regular corner route. like three different ways. He can speed run it. He can give you like a one, two,

or he can give you the one, two, three, you know what I'm saying? So he got, I think he's probably the top in the league right now at just the top of his route. So you know it's an option route. You know I got to pick away, right? And you know you got this leverage, but he still could, he still could win to that leverage. So if I had to pinpoint one thing, I'll say,

is what he do at the top of the routes and it's his size, man. That size, get that yak, up, he's a tough tackle. So you don't, you don't think he's six to two, two 15. He a big guy. So that size with that shiftingness, man, it's hard to deal with in that slot. So there's been reports that Sean McVeigh may retire. I don't buy it for a second. Hey, why everybody retiring, man? That's why I got a lot of respect for him. He really deserved his Super Bowl. You said Akiba, he treated you like a man. Yeah. What do you mean by that? Man, I'll tell you some of the stuff. that I had in the past, like, come in the building, take your hats off.

Like, come in the building, you know, don't bring your phones in the eating area or the treatment area. Like, it's like little kid rooms. Where color polos around home games, around the locker room? If you leave out your hotel room, have a polo shirt on and be dressed. Like, it's just little stuff like that.

That's little stuff, right? Colin, but we like grown in here. I got like freshman in high school. kids. You know what I'm saying? And you nitpicking at the little small stuff, man. It's, it's bigger than that. It's a certain way that, man, that a player could be treated around that building. And you don't get it everywhere. I had a, I had, what, three, six, seven, eight different head coaches. And you don't get it all the time, Colin, I'm telling you. And Sean do a great job creating that vibe that players love. Jalen Ramsey, your buddy,

had a pretty rough, I mean, listen, tough assignments. Jamar Chase, T. Higgins. I thought that T. Higgins face mask as a pretty bad miss by the officials. But when you're a corner, the reality is you can't lose your confidence. I mean, I'm sorry, but you just got to have a short memory. What do you think Jalen's thinking? He won? You think he's just happy? Let me see. Higgins, 4-400 chase, 589. Higgins had the long touchdown on him, 75. He's mad. He happy he won, but Jalen is a top-tier competitor, man. You know what I'm saying? And he wanted to be successful in games like this, man. But he going to see some more, man. He's young. He's going to see some more. He's going to get in this game again. And that's going to be his passion now. Now he's going to want to get

back to this game and play well in this game. So it is what it is. He definitely was passing a fair way God grabbed him and threw him down. You got to call that, man. You take that 75 yards off. I don't know if his day would be that bad. That's right. It looks a lot better without that touchdown. You know what I'm saying? So I just know what type of guy he is. That's one of my little homies in the league. And he don't want his game to look like that. He won his game to come out the game. And there's no question. He had three paths breakups, an interception or, you know, a lot of plays. So he's not happy with the game. He would definitely be happy with the ring, though. I mean, I mean to do that, but definitely.

Akeve, in the end, you know, people often say did the best team win the Super Bowl. You know what the Rams did, which is really impressive. Dude, they were the most resilient team. Robert, Woods, Cam Acres lost, OBJ, this game, Tyler Higby. They were not at full strength. They had to win at Tampa. They fought, man. They fought. And that's the credit to Sean, man. He got all the guys ready, man. I'm telling you, he's certain coaches how you're really ready to play for him. When you believe his next man up, you always got to be ready. Sometimes it go through one ear and out of the other. And some coach has said to you, you really, he gave you the them looks and he know how to touch everybody in the building.

So guys got to step in, man, guys stepped up today, man. Big time, man. It was crazy. Well, Akie, this has been a great 20 minutes. I'm happy for my friends that work for the Rams.
