All right, first of all, these divisional games, be it Cincinnati or Baltimore,
or the Raiders in Kansas City, are these the best, these divisional standalone
Thursday, Sunday, Monday night, or the Foxx?
game of the week. These divisional games are so intense. One of the things I love about the NFL
is that half the league, half the players are undrafted, is that in the NBA and in baseball, most of your
stars are high first round picks. Same in hockey. But think about the NFL. Travis Kelsey
tonight had one of the great nights in the history of tight ends. He went to Cincinnati,
more of a basketball school, most of my life than a football school. Patrick
Holmes went to Texas Tech.
Josh Allen, the second or first
greatest quarterback talent in the league went to
Wyoming. The two best
receivers, if I had to choose,
would be Devante Adams, Fresno
State, and Cooper Cup, Eastern Washington
University.
The amount of great
talent in this league
that did not go to
Bama, Georgia, Clemson,
Ohio State, all these
massive name brands is
completely remarkable. And I think
A lot of it is, it takes a certain chip on the shoulder, mental and physical toughness to be a star in this league.
Nobody's tackling basketball players.
Nobody's tackling baseball players.
You have to physically want it more.
You have to be tougher.
You have to be willing to put your body at risk on every play.
So a remarkable game.
You know, one of the things I think about a lot, it is my responsibility in the media to not label a lot.
to not label a lot of things outrageous.
And I'll give you an example.
Draymond Green, who's part of the volume,
punches Jordan Poole.
It's inappropriate.
It's wrong.
I do not deem it outrageous.
I understand fans doing that.
They don't have any access.
But when the media deemed it outrageous,
it's silly.
Steve Kerr came out two days later
and said,
quote,
I've seen 20 fist fights in the NBA.
Now, he wouldn't say that if he thought it was disrespectful to Jordan Poole.
What he was telling you is, it's not outrageous.
Something can be inappropriate and wrong, not outrageous.
Damien Lillard, a big fan of boxing, by the way, came out and said,
I've seen countless fist fights, more in college than the pros.
The media, I think, overreacted to Draymond Green.
I don't mind the fans doing it.
You don't see that stuff.
But Draymond was wrong, and Draymond,
Green has been, has excused himself from the team apologized to Jordan Poole. He should. It wasn't
outrageous. And I think about that with Tua. So Joe Burrow came on this podcast, the volume,
less than a week after Tua in the concussion situation and said, yeah, I've played games and don't
remember the second half. You sign up for this. You get, you get hit, you get popped, you get
fuzzy, you get concussed. That got a lot of play by the media. I have been told that by every
quarterback I've ever asked that question to, privately or on the air. Yeah, I just don't remember
that second half. Yeah, I was concussed multiple times. That doesn't qualify as outrageous.
And I mentioned that because the media's reaction to Tua bordered on hysterical.
I heard a lot of this. The league doesn't care about the players.
The league isn't concerned with safety.
That is completely not true.
Tua, as a smaller quarterback, one of the smallest athletes in the NFL, one of the smallest quarterbacks in league history,
hurt in college, hurt in the pros, should not have been playing in a game four days after wobbling off the field.
That's a dolphin's problem, and a dolphin's mistake, shocking.
a poorly run franchise mishandled protocol.
And the league should have changed protocol.
But the outrage by the media with that,
when it was simply a dolphin mistake,
has now you can see what's happening in the league.
The awful call against the Chiefs Chris Jones tonight.
That was not roughing the passer.
The awful call against Atlanta, Tom Brady.
That was not roughing the passer.
The league is now, because of the media outrage,
is gone in the opposite direction and is over-calling the play
because this is what big corporations do.
They don't want this avalanche of criticism from the fans in the media.
The Tua situation was a dolphin mistake.
They make a lot of them.
The league absolutely does care about the players.
The league has never been safer in my lifetime.
But two things are true.
The Dolphins made a mistake and Tua should not be playing.
And he is a smaller athlete who's been hurt multiple times.
Nobody's going to throw around Josh Allen like that or Justin Herbert like that.
And so the Draymond Green situation, it was wrong.
It didn't rise to outrage.
But that's how the media treated it.
The Tua situation, the dolphins are in an app franchise at times.
Be mad at them.
But the idea the league doesn't care about the player's safety,
now you've got the league completely overreacting and affecting outcomes of
games. The call against Chris Jones tonight is the worst I've ever seen. And it's not reviewable.
It's just a terrible call. That call against Atlanta they were rolling was a terrible call
against the Falcons. And so I do think in the media, there is a difference between a mistake
and outrage. And I think too often the media leans into the latter. So my takeaway is,
with the Raiders tonight, they're the best
one and four football team in the league by far.
They lost close to the Chargers, Tennessee,
Arizona, and Kansas City.
That is why this league is remarkable.
That's a really decent football team.
And if you can score in this league
and Derek Carr and Devonte Adams
and Josh Jacobs and Hunter Renfro
and a decent left side of the offensive line
and Josh McDaniels, the head coach,
the Raiders can score and they're going to be in a lot of these games.
So, you know, I look at the Raiders
as the best one and four team in the league.
Their division's probably not as good as we think.
I do not count the Raiders out in the playoffs.
I still think they have a puncher's chance.
There are teams in this league that are four and one like the New York Giants,
and I don't think they're necessarily better than the Raiders who are one and four.
And like my undrafted player attraction,
this is what makes the league great.
A one and four team, a four and one team.
Raiders, Giants play tomorrow.
on a neutral field. I'm not so sure I wouldn't take the Raiders. A wild night of football. I hope you
enjoyed it as much as I did. I will say this. The Chiefs had a fourth and about two, and they
punted the ball to the Raiders. That was interesting because when the Chargers went for it this
weekend against the Browns, I thought it was a terrible call. Let's put it in context. Why? Because the
Browns had no timeouts, and it was Jacoby Brissette, who would have to march the field for 60 yards.
But tonight, the chiefs decided to not go for it. Derek Carr with great weapons, all three
timeouts, against the defense in Kansas City that Carr has moved the ball against.
That was an interesting call by Andy Reid. The analytics teams and the analytic community
could have argued, chiefs go for it. In that instance,
I think there's an argument to be made that I would have gone for it.
My quarterback is Mahomes, who I trust.
Their quarterback is Derek Carr with great weapons.
They had all three timeouts and plenty of time.
So I am a believer in analytics by nature.
But Sean Payton came on my show at Fox yesterday and talked about this.
He said, you have to consider everything.
He said Jacoby Brissette, I would have punted the ball off on the Chargers.
He said, absolutely.
Jacobi Brissette, we would know going into a game, make Jacoby Brissette with no timeouts beat us.
But Derek Carr with three timeouts, if Andy Reid goes for it, I think I agree with him.
I was actually surprised they took it out of Patrick Mahomes' hand.
All right, interesting stuff.
See tomorrow, Fox Sports.
