Tom Curran, the best report. arguably covering the Patriots and my friend joins us. Matt Mosley on the Cowboys, their exuberance. They're throwing festivals down in Dallas after crushing the Washington football team. And, you know, obviously people are linked to me because I'm in the business of having strong opinions. I don't hold back and I'm not ever terribly concerned how my

opinions land for you. I have a right to an opinion. You haven't a right to an opinion on my opinion. And that's where it ends. Baker Mayfield had his worst professional game, standalone national TV game over the weekend. And I do believe that Andrew Barry, the GM, a really smart, respected guy, has already made his decision on Baker Mayfield. I think they're going to go after Derek Carr, Deshawn Watson. They'll make a run on Russell Wilson. But I just don't think they think Baker is face of the franchise material. beyond playing. And I'll give you a great example.

Dak Prescott of the Cowboys and Baker Mayfield of the Browns have a lot in common because the Cowboys and Browns are essentially the same team. One is on fire and pulling away with a chance to be a number one seed and one is circling the drain. Now think about this. Dallas has five pro bowlers. Tyron Smith, Zach Martin, Micah Parsons, Trayvon Diggs, and Brian Anjohn, a punter. Cleveland has five pro bowlers. Two on the offensive line, Wyatt Teller and Joel Betonio, a pass rusher Miles Garrett, a corner Denzel Ward, just like the Cowboys have Trayvon

Diggs and a running back Nick Chubb. Both are really built around the run game. Zeke and Tony Pollard, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, both have star volume veteran receivers, great route runners, Amari Cooper and Jarvis Landry, both, as aforementioned, elite corners. Trayvon Diggs, Denzel Ward, both have standouts at left tackle who have missed games this year, Tyron Smith and Jedrick Wills, Jeremiah Owusu Coromoa for the Browns is not as lively athletically as Micah Parsons for Dallas, but both serve the same purpose, a hyper-athletic rookie linebacker. Both have above-average defense. offenses, offensive-minded head coaches, charismatic billionaire owners.

They're on high-profile, often discussed teams. The difference is, Dak Prescott has much better judgment. There is no constant agitation calling out his medical staff, talking about turmoil between he and the coaches, which doesn't exist. Baker did that two weeks ago. Just look at their off-field judgment and look at their podium judgment and look at their they're playing judgment. They're essentially both playing for the exact same team. The difference is Dax judgment is better. He's completing this year 69% of his throws. Baker 62. That's judgment. One has 29 touchdowns 10 picks. That's Dack. Baker has 15 touchdowns 11 picks. One is a pass rating

over 100. That's Dack. One is a pass rating mid-80s. Both have essentially the same personnel. I think Nick Chubb is better than both the Cowboys running backs, but I do feel Micah Parsons is better than the Browns rookie linebacker. But if you look at the construct of the Browns and the Cowboys, both quarterbacks essentially are given the same opportunity. The more mature quarterback, the smarter quarterback, the quarterback with the better self-awareness since college is flourishing.

and the other is floundering. Baker is constantly looking to prove everybody wrong. He is a risk taker in his private life. I'll leave some of those details out, although I know them. The police video is what we've both seen. Baker is a risk taker at the podium saying things that are not necessary. He is a risk taker more than DAC on the field. And the truth is in both Baker and Dak Prescott's situation,

very similar, neither needs to be a risk taker. This is a run-first operation in both Cleveland and Dallas. The difference is DAC understands it. DAC audibles out of trouble. DAC puts out fires. Baker starts them. And so we have a comp for Baker. It's DAC.

Look at the Pro Bowlers. Look at the basis. foundation the strength of the team. I don't think I'm tough on Baker Mayfield. I think I'm brutally honest. I think Dallas waited and waited on DAC because he was not a spectacular arm talent, but ultimately made the decision to sign him up long term for the big bag because of his intangibles. I think Cleveland is waiting, waiting and waiting on Baker because he isn't a big time arm or athletic talent. He won't get any bag due to his lack of intangibles.

So I was talking to an executive this weekend and somebody in the NFL who I trust. And he was talking about the fact that Jets and the Giants don't have a single pro bowler. And the Rams and the Chargers have a combined 10. And he said, you know, there's a reason this executive said, Los Angeles for an executive is a reward. You live by the beach. You get the sunsets. You get the Mediterranean climate.

You get a Stan Cronkey. You get a bus family. You get the Dodgers ownership. There's a lot of really good owners in Los Angeles and the quality of life is high. Now, it's expensive. But he was saying one of the things that's not discussed about the Jets and the Giants is New York is harder than Los Angeles. the weather's harsher. You can live within eight minutes of SoFi Stadium in a nice suburb in Los Angeles.

It's harder in New York, the taxes, the weather, the people, the intensity, the media, the drives to work. And this NFL executive was saying, listen, if you put all four jobs on the market, Rams GM, Chargers GM, Jets GM, and Giants GM, he says, regardless of what you may or may not think of the Spanos family, the Rams and the Chargers would be the first two jobs people want. That beautiful stadium, non-meddling owners, the media is not as harsh, the fans are not as harsh. In Los Angeles, he was saying, people are distracted. The whole point was, the Giants and the Jets are not. necessarily getting elite people in their front offices. Was Dave Gettelman an elite candidate? I like Joe Douglas, but was he an elite candidate? So you start looking around, why can't

the Giants and the Jets get it together? And why are the Chargers and the Rams jammed with elite talent? Better scouts, better GMs, better front offices? And, I think this is not necessarily a shot at New York. It's a reality of New York. I lived on the East Coast for 10 years. I really enjoyed it. But it's intense. You have to commit to New York.

You have to convince your wife. Okay, are you ready for the intensity of New York? Los Angeles, you ask much different questions. Where do you want to live near the beach? And I think Los Angeles for people of high income is viewed as a reward. That's why Los Angeles is filled with New York. Yorkers. And New York is not filled with people from Los Angeles. Because if you can make it in Los Angeles, there's no reason to live in New York. And this has all been exacerbated by COVID.

And whereas in Los Angeles, you have more sun, you have more space, you have backyards, you have access to beaches. It's an easier life in the middle. I mean, we're seeing it now with Omicron. Like it is spreading like wildfire. Again, overwhelmingly, in cold. weather climates. And it was just interesting to have this discussion with somebody who has been in the hiring business in professional sports. And he said, there's a reason that in Los Angeles, he said, just just start counting all the star athletes.

Why? Their agents like to push him here. Their agents like to visit there. It's just a win. It's considered a reward if you end up at the end of your career staring at the sunset in Manhattan Beach or Pacific Palisades or Malibu or Santa Monica. It's a reward. You won. New York, you have to buy into the intensity of the media and the weather and the commutes and the fans and the backlash. And I think as sports continues evolving, people have more options.

Athletes have never had more options. College athletes transfer portal. Our parents didn't have these options. Our grandparents certainly didn't have these options. But for rising stars and executives, they do. And they're choosing overwhelmingly L.A. over New York. It's easier. They're both expensive. One is significantly easier. He's one of my absolute favorite people. I rely on about a half dozen NFL reporters. And when I used to live in the Northeast, I thought Tom Curran, NBC Sports Boston, was as accurate, as smart, as connected as anybody there. And so I never like to bother him, but I got to bring him on about twice during the football season. So your column after the Patriots lost to the bills was Josh Allen's bills expose a hard truth in stomping the Patriots.

So I'm not going to give it away. Tell everybody what the hard truth is. The hard truth is that as nicely as Mack Jones has fit into the Patriots system and into the NFL, the Patriots got beat by a team that has better players and its best player took over. And the Patriots had no answer. And I don't know if a lot of teams would have had an answer for what Josh Yonelan was doing yesterday. I mean, that was a Jordanesque, a Curry-esque, a look, we got our hand in his face and he's still making the shots. What else do you want to do?

And people don't really talk about that column with the NFL, but this was kind of a tip-your-cap performance by him. You know, listen, I'll say again what I felt about Mac Jones, low ceiling, but because of the infrastructure in New England, we would see his best game quicker than Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance. We'd know very early what he is and what he isn't. So in the last three games, he's one and two, in the last two games where he's trailed in the second half, he's completing 50% of his throws. And, you know, Tom, I was saying this on my show that by the time you get to week 15, 16, 14, 15, 16, everybody's seen your shit. You're not fooling anybody on schemes. And the teams that are now flourishing have guys that can make plays off the script. It's that simple.

And I look at this New England offense and I'm like, listen, you can fool people and you can out scheme them. But those days kind of feel like we're done with that now. Now it's the playmakers. And I have real questions about New England going forward. Do you? I don't think that Mac Jones is necessarily the root cause. I think he will end up being the answer to the question as to how did you capable replace Brady?

But, you know, on a day like yesterday, and that's why the Patriots, when they elevated to the number one seed, and I said they were the most consistent and trustworthy team in the AFC was because they were playing so well in all three fronts. But if the defense is not returning the ball to the offense frequently enough and you get in this panic mode, then that's what you're going to be looking at because Kendrick Bourne was only out there for 30 plays he had COVID all week. But regardless, the bills were overwhelming the Patriots. And it just, look, here's the interesting thing, Colin about Matt Jones. He wins the national championship in Alabama after a, you know, I guess an arduous 2020 season. then he competes to rise in the draft for the next three or four months.

That whole process is exhausting. Gets here, gets waterboarded with their entire system, retains it, stares down a former MVP with a huge personality in Cam Newton, goes through the Brady game, goes through the Dallas game, goes through a seven-game winning streak. This kid has been, I kept saying he's so resilient. He's founted him back. Is he going to hit a wall? or is this kid just a robot, I think he's starting to hit a wall. It's not making an excuse. Too bad, so sad, that's the way it is. But he's making some mistakes that are inexcusable in some of the

throws. You know, we had to delay a game on the first drive last week. And some of the throws, Colin, are just so scattershot that you're like, this isn't the same guy. But last thing I'll say, mixed in, you see some very capable plays what you would like to see from a guy in his third with their fifth year, understanding where guys are, stepping up in the pocket, throwing with accuracy. And Belichick intellectually is still in many Sundays lapping the field.

I don't think Bill's leaving any time soon. And I do think as it's become an offensive league, I mean, hell, every team leading the NFC has an offensive coach, half leading the AFC have an offensive coach. And Belichick and McDermott are defensive coaches, but they have the best offensive coordinators. 100%. The league is totally changing. And I do think Josh McDaniels at some point will jettison the Patriots simply because he's going to get the bag. I feel that. And then my question is, well, Bill's expertise is really the defensive side.

I've seen a lot of these defensive coaches, Fangio, Pete Carroll, Mike Tomlin, whiff, whiff, whiff on offensive coaches. And I do think to myself, if Josh McDaniels leads, the safety net leaves for Mac, who would do you think be the leading candidate to be the next? Next OC. Before I answer that, I don't think Josh McDaniels is going to leave. It's going to take a lot to get him out of here because Mac Jones is here. Because Mac Jones is here rather than Trevor Lawrence and the Khan family. And this is me, you know, spitballing. But there is stability here. There's a quarterback in place. There's a program in place. There's a nutritionist in place. There's a strength coach in place. There's a defense. All of that stuff. That's part of the reason that Josh finally said with Indianapolis, I don't know if I want to do this. I mean, now I'm starting to get pushed back on the guy I wanted to have for his strength coach. Now I'm starting to be told who I'm going to hire for this position. And that was part of the reason he pushed away from the table with Chris Ballard. He thought he's going to have some latitude to do his own things and was going away. So that was something that bothered him.

And then again, when you look at, look at what David Tepper did with Matt Rule. Look what the Marys did with Joe Judge. And these aren't dumb guys who got hired as coaches, but those guys don't know what they're looking for. What did Shad Khan, what was he looking for with Urban Meyer? So if they don't know what they're looking for, and they're just going to cast his wide-ass net, Josh has to go swim into it like everybody else,

I don't think he wants to do that. All that said, if he stays, if he does get the latitude and finds an owner who seems to know exactly what he wants, makes it more attractive than New England would be, then the Patriots are screwed, Colin. He's that good. You go get dayballed. Do you get Bill O'Brien?

Bill O'Brien's at Alabama. Does he want to come back and get line behind Bill? That's the name that jumped out to me. You go get Bill O'Brien. I mean, it's so incestuous, too. It is a very incestuous program. They don't want to bring in new ideas. They don't want to bring in old guys who already have their ideas.

They want everything to spring from. the same little hot house. They go offense. Minnesota is going to have an opening. They're going to go offense. Seattle could. For Russell Wilson's relationship, they would go offense. Derek Carr is going to need a new coach.

My guess is they go offense. You start, and this is nothing against Todd Bowles and some of these bright Matt Eber Fluse, these defensive coaches, you start looking at the league. there's going to be four or five. We average seven. Tom, there's going to be six openings minimum this year. I bet you all six go offense. At least five.

Josh McDaniels is going to be offered seven, eight million by somebody, isn't he? I would think so. But here's the interesting thing. We get into that conversation. I would contend, and I think you might agree just based on what you're saying, that Josh McDaniels isn't one of the best head-com. coaching candidates out there. Doesn't have the best resume.

He has the best resume except for five coaches in general. You put Tomlin, Belichick, Andy Reed, Pete Carroll, and John Harbaugh ahead of him. That's it. After that, the best resume is the guy who's already, you know, won six Super Bowls. He's been on, he's been an offensive coordinator in 10 different Super Bowls. No, he wasn't there for 11. So who knows more? He's worked with Cam Newton.

He's worked with Tom Brady. He's developed Jimmy Garapolo. He's developed Jacoby Brissette. He's developed Mac Jones. Mike McCarthy can't say that and he's won a Super Bowl. That's what I'm saying. I just, I find it inexplicable if it was to happen. Josh McDaniels is going to get a massive offer and he's going to get control.

He is. But, I mean, it's such a dice roll because look at, you know, Houston made sense a few years ago, right? What a friggin' jungle that's turned into. How would you have like to have gone down there and had Deshawn Watson not want to play there anymore? Then Deshawn Watson get entangled in what he's entangled in. Then have Jack Easterby go down there and it turns into what it's turned in. I mean, you can't bet on that. So I think that Josh at this juncture, after all the waiting that he's done, is more apt to, with his kids at the age as they are,

step extremely lightly and say, you know what? in a good spot. They like me. There are no guarantees, and that's important to note too, Colin. There are no guarantees for Josh McDaniels from the Kraft family. Hilden, he knows he'll be in the mix, but there's no succession plan. And certainly with the presence of Steve Belichick on the defensive staff, if Bill is eventually moves upstairs, maybe he wants to see his son become the head code here.

I don't know if that's a great idea. But there's also no dysfunction between McDaniels and Bill. the way there was between Parcells and Bill. You know, that was dysfunction. Belichick wanted out. I don't think that Josh really necessarily wants out. By the way, let's circle back to this. How long do you think Belichick coaches?

Do you see a guy that is still completely, absolutely, emotionally embedded and enjoying the work? Do you see that? Do you sense that on a press conference to press conference basis? Yeah. He amazes me. I mean, he's got 15 years on me and the energy level to do, you know, he coaches the game yesterday. He gets up.

He does 630 WEEI up here and he does an 830 conference call with us. Not that those are the most engaged portions of the day, but he's already probably been there since 5.30 after a 1 o'clock game that he probably got home at 9 o'clock from. And he's 69 years old, pushing 70. And he's going to be out there on the field, in the cold, twirling his whistle. He's remarkable. He really is. And I don't think he's sick of it. You know, it's amazing.

So I would say three more years, just to be reasonable. But he's got control of Mack Jones for three more years. The team has drafted well in the last two years. They've signed some free agents who are going to be good for a couple of years. I think he'd probably like to see at least close to not the fruition of where Mac Jones is in five years, but I don't think he's interested in going someplace else. He doesn't, he's a good golfer, but he doesn't play. I just don't think he's anxious to go someplace else to the next thing.

Listen, I'm going to put you on the spot. What do you think happens for the Patriots in the playoffs? Who do they play? How do they play? How does it end? Good. I like that. They win their last two.

They go in. They end up playing Cincinnati. They take care of business against Cincinnati because there's the coaching advantage and the lack of familiarity. So they were able to come up with some stuff for Jamar Chase and Joe Burrow. But then they bump up against a team that they have seen them before, whether it be Tennessee or Indianapolis or Buffalo. And that familiarity spells their doom.

And it's not because of Mack Jones and it's not because of the offense. It's because they couldn't get off the field on defense. That game yesterday was kind of a shell shot. I mean, that was, again, here's the other. Last thing, I know you're going to wrap it, but No, I don't. Against the Colts, you could say, well, shit, you know, they just weren't ready. They didn't know it was going to be that kind of party.

They showed up and they, oh, my God, you guys are really, this? We didn't know. It's 20 to nothing. Okay, we'll start. And they make it competitive. Against the bills, they still showed up and didn't know it was going to be that kind of party. They tried to keep pace. And then they had Josh Allen just making play after play. So they lost one game because they weren't ready. I think they're better than the Colts.

but then they lost the other game because they weren't ready, and they weren't as good as the other team. And to do that in the final stages of a season is jaw dropping. How does that happen? But it's a new team. It's half the team, half the roster in terms of starters, is either in their first year with the team, first year as a starter with the team,

Thanks for having me. Do not be shy. Call me anytime. Thanks, Tom. All right, buddy, see you. All right. Before I get into Matt Mosley, co-host of the Doomsday podcast and our buddy here at the volume, you know, I was thinking about this with COVID and the Omicron virus, right?

And, you know, a lot of conservatives are like if you get vaccinated, you don't want you don't care about your freedom um you know i want to retain my freedom and i was thinking about this the reason i took a booster last week the reason i get a vaccine have you ever gotten injured it's the fucking worst not just the injury the rehab the isolation the laying in bed by yourself the endless watching television um and i was thinking about this virus So two nights ago, I'm in Park City, Utah. My wife's like, hey, there's some friends. They want to go to dinner.

And I said, I got nothing against the friends. They're great people. But I'm not going to during this variant. I'm not having dinner with anybody outside our family because I don't want to catch this thing. It's not a fear of catching it. It's a fear of 14 days of isolation in a bed and nobody can talk to me. And so I just want to say this to all the anti-vaxers.

It's not really a freedom thing for me. It's that I haven't been sick in probably six years. And one of the reasons I wash my hands nonstop, even before COVID is I don't like isolation. I don't like being sick because you can't do anything. And when I got my booster shot for about 18 to 24 hours, I was overheating. And I just had no energy. I was really lethargic. And I was thinking to myself, God, what if I, what if I just?

just felt like this. I knew I wasn't going to die. I felt like this for two weeks. I couldn't exercise. I couldn't hang out with friends. I couldn't go to a restaurant. Some of this isn't fear of COVID because I am pretty healthy. It's fear of not being able to maintain the quality of my life because I hate sitting around and doing nothing. And with that, it's interesting. I bring in Matt Mosley, you had a really serious bike accident. And, And during it, you went through a very probably diligent rehab. But what you also probably went through during this time is the inability to do things that you loved to do. And I'm interested, you don't have to comment on the COVID or anything like that.

But when you were going through that, was that about a six-month rehab for you, Matt, after the bicycle accident? Yeah, I mean, close to a year, but six months, six or seven months, of intense rehab. And I got to tell you, not to go too far off on this, but I don't get into, I'm kind of like you in the sense that I don't ever use whatever platforms I have to, like, I never understand, you know, Twitter is such an echo chamber. Like, why do we all get on there and like tell everybody what to do? It just doesn't really make any sense.

Personally, I had this huge feeling of release. of just relief, a sense of relief when I had that vaccination. It's not because, oh, I'm taking some huge stance or anything like that. It's kind of what you just said. I just felt like I could kind of have a semblance of a life again. And so, and even when we had a horrible freeze in Texas, which I know sounds weird, but we did. And it down on a grid, it postponed that to where, like, I had to get one, the first vaccination

in January. and the second one I had to wait until like the early March, and it was extremely frustrating. So, yeah, I don't really get into this. Oh my gosh, I'm going to give you a million reasons. Or here's why you should do this. For me personally, it's just about kind of what you're saying. I feel like I can do more and can live more life.

Now, some people will say, well, I don't live in fear. That's fine. Again, I don't tell people what to do. But when I got my booster, for instance, I felt like, you know, it, that's a little more layer than I'm adding. And if I get sick, if I get to COVID, which obviously I could, it's going to be shorter. Yes.

It's going to hopefully not be a big deal. Yes. So it just, for me, from a logical standpoint, it makes sense. The science of it makes sense. But again, I don't, you know, try to tell everybody what to do because everybody has to live their lives and this whole thing about, like, why do we think that going on, like, shaming people is suddenly going to work? Why we do things like that is to sort of build up ourselves and make us seem really smart.

So anyway, not to get on that, but all those things sort of resonate with me. Yeah, no, I think you and I agree is that we all know once you get the vaccine and the booster, you could get this stuff, but it won't set me away from the public for 14 days. It'll be four. And then I can go back to my stuff. So that to me, it's not a fear. it's a, I don't like to get out of the quality of my life and it's really high and I'm really active. And if I get this thing, take away five days. Don't take away 25 days. That's what I worry about. Yeah. I mean, the one thing you don't ever have to reiterate to me is the high quality

of your life. I sort of get that. Mostly. Speaking of high quality, the hell, that was, you know, I was saying this today. If you look at the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys, it's a lot of the same stuff. Two pro bowlers in the O line, veteran high volume receiver, quality tight ends, two excellent running backs,

a star corner, an elite pass rusher, a rookie linebacker who is outperforming, Mike is better, outperforming expectations. The difference is one quarterback is pulling down his franchise, Dack is distributing, doing a Chris Paul and elevating it.

And I was thinking about the criticisms of Dack this year that he won't go downtown. He won't throw it deep. And I thought, I'm watching this game. And I can't compare it to Chris Paul. I got Devin Booker to the right. I've got bridges on the outside. I've got a deep bench. I've got D'Andre Aiton inside for the lobs.

I can give you 14 and we win by 11. I don't need to give you 29. I don't need to shoot threes. And I watched Dak yesterday. And I thought, you know, he's really figured out he knows exactly where to go with the ball. If you look at his home and road splits, he makes virtually no mistakes at home. He makes no bad throws at home. And it was just, I just not just because they won, but I just kind of appreciated Dax self-awareness.

He's looking at this talent going, I don't have to score 29 a night. I can go 14 points and 13 assists. And we win easily. And I think that's why when he went into that funk, it seems so weird to us that he was like making poor decisions to the point. Like every certain other quarterbacks, Baker or whoever, we don't immediately go, he must be hurt. He must be hurt. I think you're right. To your point, Dak can be so on point usually that when he's not, we're like, wrong.

okay is in even last night you could tell NBC was ready to show all these shots they had of look at his foot look at his weight transfer look at his back foot and it was like well we've got all these things we might as well show them well the guy's 20 for 22 I mean something's going something's going right um but I think I think it's a good I think it's I think it's a really fair point to say yeah he sometimes now where he gave you last night that you haven't seen in a while and what makes you think he is feeling better is, and we've always sort of known he might, even though he doesn't admit it, we've sort of thought he wasn't physically right. He took off a couple of times. Now, it wasn't as beautiful as watching Kyler, even as Josh Allen, who on fourth down is

jukeing people, running over people. It wasn't that, but it's enough. It's enough to make him a threat. And then how about when he extended that one play, and he pointed, it's like, you know, school yard football head on down the field, Gallop, and he made that play. That's sort of the old deck. And that's why, man, this is why it's so exciting. The NFL is so great right now. I only can think of one team that I would say, I would think the Cowboys, I just wouldn't give them much of a chance against impartial part of it's because of that environment going into Lambo but everybody else i mean i imagine an olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged it's the enhanced games some call it grotesque others say it's unleashing human potential either

I was talking about the Packers on the show a couple days ago. So something that Vegas cares about is it's much more fun to watch a boxer with a knockout punch.

whether you love Tyson or George Foreman or Ollie in his prime, they were much more dynamic than Larry Holmes, who was the king of the jab, is that Dallas take out the Denver game. Dallas either wins, but they often win like a Buffalo or a Tampa or a Kansas City. They can blow you out. They can embarrass you.

Green Bay's point differential is plus 59 this year. It's 11th in the league. 43 of the 59 is two wins over the bears and one over the lions is that Green Bay is not finishing off teams. The fact that Cleveland, through four picks in Lambo, 2.20 left, Cleveland's going for the win. I watched, I went and I went and did some digging. The Packers are 31st against the run yards per carry. you can attack i honestly believe dallas the rams now with cam makers sony michel san francisco if leonard fernett comes back green bay has got to me matt a hole you can own time of control

they cleveland is a great cleveland is dallas if you look at their pro bowlers on offense an offensive coach, interior, pro bowl lineman, left tackle, struggle to stay healthy, two good backs, volume receiver, capable tight ends. I think Dallas matches up okay with Green Bay. I really do. And a much more athletic defensive front. The only thing I would say to that is something you let off with. The splits at home, the cowboys are unbelievable, and it's just not, the offense is not traveling. the defense is capable of traveling.

But what I'm saying is, Dak has to show that he can do it in those sorts of elements. And what he's shown is that in the 72 degrees of Jerry World, that he's extremely comfortable. I don't, I mean, we can look at Josh Allen. We can look at Tom Brady. We can look at Aaron Rogers. We know they are all built to win in the cold.

old. Mahomes can do it because Kansas City is actually a cold weather place. You know, it gets crazy cold. I don't think we have a great feel for DAC in that environment. Now, to your point, could you lean on Zeke and Pollard? Maybe so. And those tight ends. And that's why it's, you're right. And George's coming back. Darwin's about ready to come back and Schultz can take a hit. And he's a really good weapon. He's a nice weapon. I just, I worry a little bit about DAC in those types of environments. And you have to trust what you're seeing. And this year, what we're seeing is a team that functions unbelievably better at home than they do on the road. So if they are able to grab that number two seed, then you can stay at home until you get to the NFC title game.

And so it's it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, makes it weird. Uh, the media can't even go out there the rest of the season. They will not even be able to go to practice.

And you know, you know how it is when you're able to send me to practice. Yeah. There's just certain things, Colin, I can pick up on that others can. Right. But it's, it's, but, but it's, it's, it's, it's, it's almost like Christmas barely even happened. The Cowboys that the, the, the crowd at that game last night and, and in the reaction to this is just, it supersedes anything. And it's why, it's why years ago, the Tom Landry, when I was a kid, the Tom Landry Cowboys, they put out an album called, I don't want to be home at Christmas. I could, if I could think of it, I could even get the tune going.

And it was like went platinum, okay? It was bigger than the Super Bowl shuffle. And it was the Manster and all in Too Tall and Harvey and all of them singing about how they don't want to be home at Christmas. So, yeah, it's a different, it's, I mean, it's exciting for anybody that's in the playoffs. But when the Cowboys have a good, I just don't think, I think though this Cowboys group, people are still not quite. ready to accept this team. Part of that's, part of that's McCarthy. Part of that's the way DAC has played.

But what's funny is this is, think about, I mean, I'm seeing people now play stuff from things like you were saying and other folks were saying about, we came into this season talking about how they would have to overcome a defense, to score 30, 40 points a game or whatever to win. The whole thing has flipped. and the calling card of this team is now its defense. And not only do they turn you over, but they score when they turn you over. I mean, did you see, you saw Lawrence?

I mean, are most pass rushers look like that in the open field, bringing the athleticisms off to charts with this group? Yeah, no, I was saying this. The Patriots may have the best culture in the league and the best coach, but by this point in the season, and you're not fooling anybody. You've unveiled all your tricks. You have to have playmakers. That's what Buffalo has at quarterback. That's what Kansas City has.

That's what Dallas has. Because there's a certain scheme fatigue. Everybody, we've added games. We're 15 weeks through. Nobody's fooling anybody anymore outside of the occasional fake punt. You line up now. And do you have guys that can do things off script? and Dallas does and has several of them.

And I don't think there's a ton of teams that do. I think the Rams have some. I think the Bucks have some. I think Kansas City does. I think Buffalo does. And I think Green Bay has, you know, Devante Adams, Aaron Rogers. There's guys that can do stuff off script. But so I want to ask you one Big 12 holiday question.

Because you are the voice, the moral compass of the Baylor Bears. So I want to ask you this. I got into this discussion the other day and I said, you know, we're always very optimistic about new coaching hires. Like I thought Matt Ruhl would be a home run and that shit is just gone sideways fast. Urban Meyer, I would have bet a lot of money. He would have at least lasted a year in Jacksonville. I was very high on Joe Judge. And so during this college football season, a lot of big name schools have.

big hires, Miami, Mario Cristobal, Brian Kelly, LSU, a Lincoln Riley USC. And then Brett Venables, Oklahoma. And I got into this discussion the other day with a friend. And he said, one of these guys is going to tank. He goes, you know it's not going to be a four for four of those schools. And Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame. And so I'll lay this out for you, Matt Mosley. I said, well, Lincoln Riley will succeed because it's the weakest conference.

and USC with average coaches. Clay Hilton won 72% of Pac-12 games, and he was garbage. So Lincoln Riley will succeed to some level. I said, Brian Kelly's won everywhere. Why wouldn't he win at the place where you can accumulate the most talent? I think he'll win to some level. I said, my guess is Notre Dame didn't lose any players. They have momentum, a workable schedule,

and they retained all their coaches. So there's great continuity. I said, I don't see Marcus Freeman going sideways fast. He may not be Brian Kelly, but I don't see it unraveling quickly. And I said, Oklahoma is interesting. The conference they're entering in two years is only getting better. Most defensive hires aren't working nearly as well. if you look around the NFL in college as offensive hires.

Brett Venables is sort of a rigid, quirky personality, little stiff. And I said, I don't know how long they'll be down. I don't think that's going to work in Oklahoma long term. Not to mention, they just lost their offensive brainpower with Lincoln Riley. And I'm like, I don't know if that's going to work. So you tell me as a big 12 guy. How is the Venables higher viewed and how do you view Oklahoma over the next five years entering the SEC? Because of the very way they approach in their culture, I think will always, at least in the post-McBrown world, will stay ahead of Texas.

I just do, even though Sart got the quarterback, you never know what he could get going there. I, Venables, I mean, that whole thing fascinates me. I will just tell you this to watch out for Lincoln on this. He was handed like unbelievable what he, I mean, Baker, love him or hate him or whatever, was an unbelievable college quarterback. Some of this dropped in Lincoln's lap. I think Oklahoma, by the very nature of their culture and everything, and here's the other thing that we didn't mention, or you didn't mention,

Jeff Levy just went in there. That's going to be fascinating. So they replace a guy who's obviously a great offensive mind with a guy from Old Miss who, do you know where Jeff Levy comes from? That's Art Briel's son-in-law. So, I mean, again, it's like a landmine or whatever. to even bring up Art's name. But Art's offense, I mean, he was maybe the greatest offensive coach during that era

that he was at Baylor. He was unbelievable. He took his scheme and beat far more talented teams because he knew what he needed. If Levy his son-in-law is anything like that, Oklahoma will be just fine. There are people who think Oklahoma will be better without Lincoln. It's not really even that huge of a thing against Lincoln as much as it is about sort of a, they just hadn't been able. They've been to the semifinals and all of that,

but they hadn't been able to get over the, and plus, Finables has been at Clemson where I know they're coming off a bad season, but that's a juggernaut. I worry about Lincoln the most out of all those folks. And you asked me just about the Big 12, But I just think, I think you make a great point that team or that program, the conference is weakest. And I do think that was in the back of his mind.

I think I can go and win big there. Very quickly. And I don't have, I don't have Switzerland. I don't have stoops. I don't have all these people hanging around. I just, ooh, you know, you understand that. So here's what I'm saying. I have a better feel for Oklahoma than.

you do, I think. You have a much better feel for USC than I do. I can tell you, I know where Lincoln comes from. He's not that guy. He's not a Southern California guy. He's not Pete Carroll. He's Buell shoe, Texas. Now, he's probably smart enough from an offensive standpoint to surround himself with all the right people. But I'm just saying he has not glitzy USC. That's not the way he's wired. In some weird way, Venables is just as good a fit at OU as Lincoln was. And I think the OU people, by the way, they can't, they hate Lincoln now. And that's okay. That's the way these things happen.

Yeah. I think it'll be exciting to see it all play out. But I worry more about Lincoln than I do Venables is the way I would put out. Yeah. I mean, I just, I look at Venables, and I think an average schedule could be Florida, Georgia, LSU, I mean, I mean, literally, his sixth toughest game could be Auburn, right? Whereas the toughest game for Lincoln Riley could very well be Oregon. And USC, I mean, again, Clay Hilton was a disaster.

He won bowl games. He won a Rose Bowl. He couldn't coach. He got a job at Georgia State? Southern. Southern. State. Yeah.

And so I don't think you're incorrect. And I just got into a discussion with a friend and he said, one of these guys isn't going to work. And I said, God, Clay Hilton the first three years worked. How can he not work? Because the PAC 12, for whatever reason, and I think a lot of it is, there's two NFL teams in Los Angeles now. And that if USC isn't good, the conference is mediocre.

And it's a distracted market. the passion for USC is down. And frankly, when USC is down, the PAC 12 doesn't even feel like a Power 5 conference on certain Saturdays. I just think where Oklahoma is going is just this conveyor belt of NFL athletes week after week. You can have a good team. Who's healthy by the end of an SEC season? I mean, Alabama's beat up. George's beat up.

It's just, so it's interesting. I like your perspective. You could, you know, I will say this about Lincoln Riley. I've met him now. He doesn't have a huge presence. I think he's kind of an intellectual, but he doesn't, he's not very sweatser. He's not Jimmy Johnson. He's not Nick Saban.

He's not Harbaugh. He doesn't have a smash through the TV set presence. He's kind of soft spoken, almost shy. And that's interesting because in college football, Christobal presence, Mel Tucker presence, Mac Brown presence, Bob, Stoop's presence. That matters in college football. I don't think Lincoln is a broad-shouldered, loud, hyper-aggressive alpha male.

He's very low-key to me. I think you're right. And I think there's a couple, one of the thing I would say is that that LSU thing with Kelly, man, that's going to be fascinating because they've won big at different times, not for a long period of time, but with two weird guys, but that fit that weirdness of Baton Rouge. And so they're bringing in an urban, and boy, it's a bad name time to use here,

but a guy was one of the greatest college coaches of all the time. They're bringing in a total hard A who doesn't fit the goofy kind of coach that they've been used to. They eat the grass that less was, followed by the gumbo guy, you know, that Coach O was, and they're not ready for this in a sense. Now, he may be great there because he can coach. He just, he at Notre Dame, he would get you to the dance,

but once he got there, he couldn't do anything with it. I don't know. Maybe it's just because Alabama and Clemson are just that much better than everybody. I don't know, or Ohio State. But they couldn't compete if they got there, which I think is admirable. I mean, I don't knock Aaron Rogers for people say, he loses all the time the NFC title game. Do you know what the Cowboys fans would do to get to an NFC title game after 25 years?

Like if they even arrived at one, Dak, Mike McCarthy, they would all be made men. People say, oh, Cowboys are measured by Super Bowls. No, they're not. It's been too long. They're not if they got to an NFC title game. So I, oh, I'm glad she took me down college football. because I just, I do sit around and I kind of think of those things.

But here's the one thing, other thing I'll add. I think OU from a brand perspective. Oh, yeah. And this is what I would offer is coming into that conference, and other than Alabama and Georgia, who do you have ahead of that? I'm talking about longtime brands, which you're into. Yeah. I think it's Alabama one in Oklahoma, too.

I think Oklahoma's brand is amazing. I think it's a top six. I think in the history of college football, Notre Dame, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, USC. Those are the brands. To me, those are the big brands. Those six. Oklahoma's brand is unbelievable.

Yeah. So I just think by that very nature of always feeling like we belong, they will belong. Whereas Texas has a big brand, but the brand, is more about, man, these will be great places to go. This would be fun. Let's go.

I wonder what they'll be like an Ole Miss. Let's go. Let's go see what that tailgates like. I mean, that's the way they operate. Yeah. Texas doesn't give you the payoff enough. They got a big brand. You don't get the payoff wins enough.
