Fan duel. More ways to win. This is Prime Cuts, the best of the Colin Coward. podcast, we had a great week. One of my favorites ever. Cowboy writer Matt Mosley, tremendous insight into what's going on behind the scenes with the Cowboys. Nick Wright, my buddy, talk Belichick letting go of Brady as the worst sports mistake in the history like a Babe Ruth to the Yankees mistake. I disagreed. Chad Millman, he tells me, if I'm a sharp or I'm a square NFL week three. First, my top takes of the week.

I want to start with the Steelers. And it's understood that veteran quarterbacks over the course of a season get arm fatigue. They get hit a few times. What you're concerned about with an older Brady, you know, Breeze in his last couple of years, Philip Rivers is, how are they post Thanksgiving? They're usually pretty fresh early. It is week two. And Big Ben looks like something from the Jurassic era.

he has no mobility. He has never been good pre-snap. The Steeder's offense with a rebuilding offensive line is basically throw it deep to chase Claypool and cross your fingers. Naji Harris appears to be a really nice player. But this offense, I mean, Big Ben through two games, I mean, folks, he's completed. 45 a 75 passes, a couple of touchdowns a pick. This is not a team that can get to the playoffs. as good as that defensive front seven is, they were taken apart by Derek Carr.

If you watch that Steeler's Raiders game, Derek Carr was so far superior playing on the road to Big Ben. Accuracy, deep ball, managing the line of scrimmage, and the Steeler operation has coddled Big Ben. So they really haven't, over the last two or three years, aggressively drafted an elite quarterback in the first or second round. Green Bay did, and Aaron Rogers showed a slight decline. Even Tampa last year, second round, they're going to go get somebody and Brady won a Super Bowl. The Steelers right now are not close to a Super Bowl team with this offense. And if you watch that game, Derek Carr was so much better than Big Ben. It was embarrassing if you're a Steeler fan.

Aaron Rogers has gotten progressively needier. now he's lashing out at Bill Cower, Nate Burleson, Jermichael Finley, trying to control all the reporting on him, which is ludicrous because those are certainly highly qualified people. I always had a theory, and I've talked about this for years on Aaron Rogers. He's a weird fit. He's a SoCal guy and a weird fit in, you know, small town Wisconsin. Brett Farv wasn't a weird fit in Wisconsin because he was a southern small town. guy. And middle of nowhere, that's where he was born, and that's where the Packers are. It's different for Aaron Rogers. And if he was the quarterback of the L.A. Rams and he had a day off.

Because remember, the team plays Sunday. They get Monday off and Tuesday is a film day. A lot of time off early in the week. Aaron Rogers was the quarterback of the L.A. Rams. We have 37 music venues. He loves music in Southern California, eight pro teams, two major colleges, the beach. You can go out in public in in Los Angeles. Nobody cares. My wife ran into Don Sheel at a restaurant two days ago. Nobody was bothering him. I've run into Harrison Ford, Mark Harmon, Bob Sagitt, Matt Damon. Nobody cares in Southern California. Literally, nobody cares. And that matters. Aaron Rogers, though, in Green Bay, can't leave the house. By October, the weather's lousy. There's no beach. Most of his friends live in Southern California. He's not married. He has no kids. And he doesn't have a tight relationship with his family. That's well

documented. So what does Aaron Rogers do in his days off? Consumes lots of media, especially media talking about Aaron Rogers. This is something I've talked about all the time. In my family, we have what I call phone down Friday. We all put our phones down on Friday, and I get away from sports. It's very easy. There's always something to do here. I'll get in the car with my wife, and we'll just go for a two and a half hour drive through Malibu and up in the canyons. There's a resort within 45 minutes in every direction from where we live. There's the beach. There's great restaurants. Where does Aaron Rogers go? He's not married, no kids. Friends are in L.A., not close to his family, can't go out in public, weather's crappy indoors. He's trapped. And I think when

I watch Aaron Rogers react the way he is to criticism, Russell Wilson, married kids, close with his family, lots of business relationships. He's too busy to worry about what I'm saying about him. Tom Brady, a bunch of kids, multiple business partners. He's too busy. You know, in Seattle, in Florida, you know, you can go out. Although Brady probably gets mobbed in Tampa, too. But I've said this about Aaron Rogers. He's got rabbit ears.

And the worst thing you can ever try to do as an athlete is to control the media. Bill Coward, Nate Burleson, Jermichael Finley are going to say whatever they want to say. Stop being so insecure and sensitive and needy. This weekly grievance session, is embarrassing. I mean, it's so below a Tom Brady. Can you imagine Tom Brady spending 30 seconds ripping the coverage of Tom Brady? I mean, it's so below his standard. And this is something I've talked about all the time with young broadcasters. Have a life beyond sports. Get off your phone. If you're spending five and a half hours on your phone, it's going to leave to some soul searching and

insecurity and I feel with Aaron Rogers, Green Bay is a very, very odd, difficult fit for him. He's by himself a lot. And, you know, Aaron's the kind of guy that he's pretty global. He's pretty worldly. I mean, he wants to do other things. Los Angeles should have 37, 38 music venues. You could go walk outside your door.

You would literally not be bothered. I feel he's kind of trapped. It gets in his head and he's consuming too much media, mostly about himself. I want to talk about the best young coach in football, and it's not necessarily Sean McVeigh. It's clear that it's not only an indictment on the New York Jets operation, but what you're seeing with Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers is pretty remarkable.

The knock on Darnold out of college, they're two and O with two comfortable wins, but the knock on Darnold out of college, and I watched every snap, was his accuracy issues. What is he completing now? 70% of his throws. He doesn't make the mistakes. Total composure. It would be easy to just say, this is an indictment on the Jets. But instead of just the negative side, let's look realistically at the positive side.

Not only has Matt Rule made Darnold more comfortable, this defense has 21 quarterback hits and 10 sacks in two games. What does that tell you? The culture of the Carolina Panthers is headed in the right direction. It also tells you this is a remarkable stat on Matt Rule the coach of Carolina. Going back to the beginning of last year, you will not believe this. Carolina leads the NFL with the fewest three and outs. That's with Teddy Bridgewater and a start with Sam Narnold. Now think about that.

Not Mahomes, not Lamar Jackson, not Don Brady, not Derek Carr, not Matt Ryan, not Russell Wilson, not Aaron Rogers. No, the fewest three and outs. Matt Rule, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Darnold. But this is a offensive line that outside of right tackle graded poorly, left tackle all the way to right guard. What Matt Rule is doing with this suboptimal offensive line, the scarce number of three and outs, the revamping, rebooting of Sam Darnold is really mind blowing. You know, you hire these college coaches and you cross your fingers. really know, but he appears to be a, I know it's early. You know, I know it's like 18 games, but watching Sam Darnold play the comfort in which he plays the position now is stark.

It is obvious. Beautiful women in sports.

So your wife's stunning. So at some point, she's just going to have you do something. and just because she's going to say, do it, and you're going to do it. Oh, it's happened many a time. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. So particularly before we were married with kids, like when I was trying to win her over.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't think there were some 3 a.m. Where are we going? Okay. So she's a showstopper. The second thing is sports. So you can be a good businessman like Jerry Jones and make great decisions. in every other business

and then make terrible decisions with your football team. So Ezekiel Elliott in his last like 12 games has two touchdowns. In his last 17 games, he averages like 70 yards a game. Yeah. He is going to be an $18 million cap hit next year

and it's 16.7 after that. And I think 13 after that. And by the way, right before the season started, they restructured his deal a bit, which made it slightly harder to move on to him. That's right. in the next few years. I would argue in baseball, there are lots,

every team's got one or two bad contracts because the contracts are now extended to seven, eight, nine, ten years for good players. No baseball contract, even Mookie Betts. By year seven, it's not a good deal for the Dodgers. In basketball, Auto Porter, because you have this minimum that you have to spend, auto Porter can get a like high-end contract.

Good player, not special, but paid like a special player. In football, you almost never get trapped. You almost never get trapped. You could cut Tom Brady today. He's so small of a cap hit. I mean, you could cut almost every quarterback, not named Russell Wilson and Aaron Rogers today. So not only is the Zeech contract awful in a league with few awful contracts.

The second worst contract could be Jalen Smith, a wonderful guy who is now a backup. He was playing like 20% of the snaps. They tried to move him. They could not move him. And they paid these guys early when they didn't have to. The Zique thing, though, Colin, is, can I, if I can jump in, is interesting because I want to ask you about something.

Have you ever, you're not a big car guy, right? Are you? Not at all. Right. That's not your thing. But so the car guys would be a better example on this. But I'm sure, so I'll use cars as an example, but I'm sure you can find something in your life.

You've got, say, a very serviceable, good car. But you have a lot of money and you're like, you know, what, I'm buying the top of the line fancy car. Sure. And you buy it and you drive it. And after a couple weeks, you're like, I actually like everything about my other car more. Yeah.

I still have it. You feel an obligation internally to drive the more expensive one because you spent the money. It's illogical. It goes against the sunk cost fallacy. But there is something in you, even if you enjoy driving the other car more that pushes you drive the more expensive one because you spent the money. Here's why I say that.

The Zieg contract's obviously a bad contract, but that is a sunk cost at this point. That's done. I think it's going to be hard for the Cowboys to give Tony Pollard running back one carries because they spent all this money on Zeeke. They're both there. The cap it's the same this year, whether Zeeke gets 30 carries or zero carries. And logically, what a robot would do is what gives us the best chance to win. What a human being will do is feel pressure to give the ball to the expensive guy because you spent the money.

Yep. And I think that's a problem for Dallas. I think it's a real problem. Well, and also it's why I give great credit to Steve Kime, the Arizona general manager. GMs will stick with a quarterback like Mitch Trubisky in Chicago. Ryan Pace did because he drafted him. Steve Kime acknowledged, yeah, I whiffed on that one. And in one year, fire the coach and went and essentially fired the quarterback.

That doesn't happen ever in the National Football League, ever. And another team that won a Super Bowl because of it, and they didn't even wait a year, was your Seahawks. I didn't say your Seahawks, but the Seahawks famously. They, they, it was very difficult to spend that money on Matt Flynn and then say, you're not playing. But it is logical. The money is spent. That is gone. Now you just got to play who's better.

This is what I've never understood. And I, this again, like I'm not, I'm not breaking psychological ground here. But people, and I'm sure you've known people like this, that buy theater tickets a month in advance. Yeah. And the day of. dread going, don't want to go, are miserable about going, and go anyway. And the answer is, well, I paid for him. Well, you paid, that's gone.

You already paid for him. Now you should do what makes you happy. The money doesn't come back to you. And sports teams have a big problem with this. They have a huge problem with recognizing that money is spent. That is a separate thing. Now we must do what is best for us moving forward. And I think for the Cowboys, it's going to be a problem.

I told you I was going to take the car and steer another direction. I have a question for you. Because you had a Babe Ruth take that cut through, but I thought should have cut through even more because I thought it was brilliant. It was the Otani. It was better that the marketing thing should be better than Babe. And Babe Ruth is known for a number of things, but one of the things he's known for or associated with is the worst transaction in sports history.

right is the red socks the dude that owned the red socks when it was about to go broke and wanted to put on a Broadway play and sold him to the Yankees is it possible column that a different Boston sports team has finally trumped selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees and that's what Belichick did and here's the thing I I by the way I thought Brady was cooked too. I was as wrong as anybody on this. However, when you go through the timeline of, and now it's not just Brady, it's also, Grank looks amazing. And you're like, okay, in 2014 Belichick drafted his replacement. Brady won the Super Bowl that year, then won it again in 16. In 2016, going into the summer, Brady wanted Gropolo gone. Belichick wouldn't do it. They go into the 2017 season. Brady

kind of forces the hand via the thing with Kraft, gets Gropel out of there. In 2018, Belichick tries to trade Grunk. Grunk told us, no, he traded me to Detroit. I had to threaten to retire. That year, they don't win the Super Bowl without Grunk. Against my chiefs in the AFC championship game, who makes the biggest plays? Grunk. In the Super Bowl, who makes the only explosive play?

Grunk. Grunk then retires because he doesn't want to play in that setting anymore. Brady then leaves. Okay, he obviously wins the damn Super Bowl. and right now Brady and Grunk lead the league in touchdown passes and touchdown catches, while the Patriots are trying to recreate it with Mack Jones and John O'Smith. How is that not the worst sports decision that's been made in 100 years? How is it not?

I'll explain it to you. So I am less inclined to criticize politicians, surgeon generals, over COVID than other medical matters. Why? Because it's so unique and rare and was such a medical tsunami and caught us totally off guard.

So it is one thing if it was a common flu and 400,000 Americans die. We should be prepared for that. We have a term for it. It's called the flu season. Right. But when a pandemic hits,

and we're not sure if it comes from a lab, was human created, it came from. And we're not even sure for the first three months when it landed on our soil. I'm going to be much less inclined to clobber our medical experts. When you deal with Tom Brady, the fact that he may be better at 43 and 44 that he was at 39 is so uncommon. Serena at 39 way past her prime. Messy at 34 past his prime. Ronald at 36 is cashing checks.

LeBron at 36. Now falls into one more injury and he's brittle. Tom is 44 and looks better. His release and his arm strength look better than they did at 38. Now, some of it may just be, this sounds silly. The humidity, the flexibility, the pliability of playing in really, really warm weather. There's a reason old people move to Florida. feel better.

Your goals feel better. Tom is so historically unique that if you looked at the time that Belichick drafted Garoppolo, I think Tommy was 37 or 38. Well, that is the time that you move off Peyton and breathe. Yes. And Alex Smith. So if you look at what Belichick did, he was doing what history tells you to do. 37 to 38, you draft a player.

He did. He drafted Garoppolo. Craft said, get out of here. So now when Brady actually shocks him and leaves, they have no succession plan. So I will give Belichick the break in that who in their right mind could have predicted. I mean, I'm a Brady devoted Brady supporter. I said last year, there's no preseason. This is a wild card team at best.

I mean, through five weeks, I didn't think they were a playoff team. Correct. So when there's historical exceptions, I'm going to give people breaks. And it sounds crazy for me, of all people, to be saying this because I was the biggest skeptic of them all. But the counterpoint to your COVID comp is this. You're giving the Surgeon General a break. Got it. But what if all of America, in this case, that's the fans and the president of the United States, in this case that's Robert Kraft,

We're like, do this. He's like, no, I'm going to do that. And he was wrong. Because Belichick, the reason, and this is, here's, I'm big on, if you take a massive swing and you're right, you get to do a victory lap. This is probably why I like celebrating in sports. Like, yeah, celebrate your successes. But also, if you take a massive swing and you miss, there's got to be a penalty associated with it. Belichick went against what his fans wanted,

his players wanted, and the owner wanted, because he knew better. And he was wrong. And he was wrong with a guy he'd been around for 20 years to where if anybody should have known, maybe he's going to be different. You would think it would be Belichick. And so I don't think it means,

this isn't about who gets more credit, Brady or Belichick. It's not about Belichick's place in history. It's about this individual decision. it's trending towards historically awful. Let's get to Matt Mosley. Dallas is a little better than I thought. Are they, how do you view them from your perception before the first snap and now your perception after the second game? I do think they wish they could play in that stadium more.

I thought they function better. With those fans, they seem to go on the road. road and play well. The one thing they have to shore up, they have a problem with their special teams coach. You guys on the West Coast are familiar with John Fossel. Yeah. And he is an intriguing, sort of engaging character. He has become a problem with the Cowboys. He is so closely connected to McCarthy that he has full dominion over a lot of things. In fact, maybe Dan Quinn and and then fossil as far as like who has the biggest say in things. And so they end up doing very curious things like for no apparent reason before the half,

the first half, going in there trying to block a punt and running into the kicker. Yeah. There's always some head scratching silliness with special teams. That goes back to last year. Yes. For whatever reason, McCarthy is convinced that this is the best special teams coach ever. he he he I mean it's like they're just little buddies and they just spend a lot of time together so they need to sort of figure that out but I would probably right now even though I'm the first to

go after Jerry when I think it's appropriate from what I've seen and boy hurts who I really like I watch them in Oklahoma watching Alabama that that mess they threw out there today where you just drive after drive and they can't get anything done and they have their wide receivers need to be guys that have time to do double moves, get open downfield. Rager is not a guy who's going to break tackles. He's just an explosive receiver. I would say, unlike last year, the Cowboys have a chance to win this thing by two or three games. Okay, so here's my next bet I've already made. I got a better number. I got the Eagles plus four at Dallas. So I already got four. it's down to three and a half. So I'm going to have a big week. And that's why I tell people, listen to this show because I'm making my bets now earlier. So I got the Eagles plus four.

It's now at three and a half at Dallas. Here's my takeaway. That was a good loss for them. Jalen Hertz is going to face very few defensive fronts that are that aggressive. Philadelphia, Jimmy Garoppolo struggled in the first half. This was an ugly, ugly game. If you take what we perceive Philadelphia to be before the first snap of the year and what we perceived the Niners to be before the first nap of the year.

That game had blowout written all over it. No, San Francisco was better, but it was a good loss for Philadelphia. Remember, Jalen Hertz is in the process. He doesn't have very many starts. We're really in a growth arc right now for him. And his ceiling, I think, is lower. But we're not, we're getting, when you haven't done, when you're, when you're learning Spanish, the first six months, you're taking giant steps.

And then you get to a point. It's baby steps. You've learned basic communication. Jalen Hertz is still taking giant steps. He is getting four and five practices film study. This guy got yanked last year as a starter. Got yanked. Got benched in a game he was winning.

I like the Eagles plus four. It's a division game. I think the Eagles defensive line is pretty damn good and is going to keep them in some of these games. I don't know if they win, but possible upset. This is a game I've already bet Eagles plus three and a half here. Dude, you are 100% attacking it the right way. The Eagles are absolutely the sharp side. The Eagles were the sharp side last week and you pointed it out with the Niners.

I agree that was a good loss. You give me that game 10 times with that number in that scenario. I am going to take the Eagles. They were a very public dog last week. What's really interesting to be is that we are getting to a place. in football where analytics is meeting courage. There is less and less, cover your ass decision-making happening. And that can often play out advantageously for betters, and sometimes it can hurt you. We saw with the Eagles last week how often they went forward on fourth and goal. A couple of times

did they decide to settle for a field goal. We're having a different conversation about the Eagles being off of a good loss. We saw it with the Colts going forward consistently on fourth and goal against the Rams. We saw it with Miami. They ended up losing

by, you know, 35 points, but there were so many times they went for it inside the goal line. Coaches are realizing A, 7 points is better than 3 points.

B, if you lose by 3 or you lose by 30, it's still a loss. You might as well go for the win. We saw it with the Ravens. Go for that win against Kansas City. if you get it then the game is over.

You see John Harbaugh on the sideline, ask Lamar Jackson, you want to go for it on fourth and one, game over. 100% this is the right side. The number has been moving in the Eagles direction. Candidly, our models have this game projected at Eagles plus two. So for context, that is about a 5% edge between what we projected at and what the number is actually at. Anything that it's one, one and a half percent or higher for a professional better is usually

play. And this is also over a key number of three where a lot of games land, a lot of divisional games like we just talked about with the chargers and the chiefs, with the bangles and the Steelers. And then finally just look at the market. Like the Cowboys beat a team, the public and the Sharps love in the Chargers. And the Eagles loss is a public dog the week before.
