All right, little instant reaction as Baltimore did everything right and hammered Buffalo. we're going to have a really, really long breakdown of many of the games this weekend, including Alabama, Georgia with John Middlethoff in about 10 minutes. So, you know, this Buffalo and Baltimore, two teams that met tonight are both really good teams,

great quarterbacks, really solid coaches, excellent organizations, front offices, draft developed well. But they're unlike Kansas City, which wins all these games, Kansas City never blow you. you away all year long usually when you're a dynasty you know step katie clay Thompson in their prime bama in their prime yukon women's basketball uh yokovitch in tennis when you get dominant players serena um they they jump through the tv i mean it's just they're just exhilarating blowout wins kansas city doesn't give you that kansas city just plays close and wins which i do think eventually now with rishi rice perhaps out for the year, cross your fingers on that. Maybe that's the tipping point. But Baltimore

and any Sunday can look like the best team in the world, and Buffalo last Monday looked like the best team in the world. And yet the Ravens lost at home to the Raiders and the bills tonight weren't even competitive. So those teams are just, Baltimore to me, is so highly emotional. Half to half. I mean, their first half statistics in the last two weeks between the Cowboys and Baltimore, and then the bills tonight in Baltimore. I mean, it's remarkable, their efficiency, their power, their dynamic. You don't quite know ever what you're going to get half to half from Baltimore. But tonight's one of those nights where everything went well.

Derek Henry, big 87-yard run to start it, and just gashing Buffalo. So I like Baltimore in this game to win because I thought stylistically, Buffalo hadn't faced a team like this yet. And, you know, Baltimore is, Chris Collins were said it tonight. They're like facing one of those academy teams in college that runs, you know, you think's an outdated, weird offense. It's hard to practice for it, especially in a short week. There's nothing like Baltimore and Lamar Jackson in the league.

So I just thought that played in their favor. But in the second half, Buffalo had, you know, just for a minute, had a little momentum. They were running the ball pretty well. And then they tried a weird trick play. and listen, if you're going to do trick plays, I'm a fan of them about every third to fourth week. They have to work because any trick play that fails, you look like the worst coach in the face of the earth.

And McDermott was just getting killed when they are, the offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, when they make that call. But it wasn't going to be Buffalo's night. You could tell from the first half, all the energy. The tackling wasn't great. It just was going to be Baltimore's night. And last week was going to be Buffalo's night. Those two teams, I mean, on any, the three teams,

teams in this league that in any half can look unbeatable are the Minnesota Vikings, the Buffalo Bills, and the Baltimore Ravens. And so when Derek Henry now is finally cooking for them and Lamar Jackson, I will, you know, I've defended Lamar Jackson for years. And my take is all these quarterbacks are different, some tall, some short, you know, some more running, some better pocket. I love Stafford, Aaron Rogers in the pocket. I like Lamar out of it. The guy wins 76% of his games and take away the Kansas City Chiefs, he wins big games, just beat the Cowboys, just beat the bills, convincingly in both. He's just so damn dynamic. There's nothing else in the planet like him. And so, you know, I used to kind of be like, you got to be a pocket quarterback, wiggle a little.

The games changed. The rules have changed. And, you know, it took everybody about a year to figure out if he could play. But you could just see tonight, Buffalo's totally out of sorts. Lamar playing with a ton of confidence. And, you know, we live in a weird. world now where you can present people with evidence. You can literally present people with evidence. I see it in politics all the time. And people just don't want to believe it. And it's like you can look at all the passing numbers for Lamar Jackson, fourth quarter passing, in the pocket passing. You know, he's very good. He's better than average. He's obviously the greatest running quarterback of all time. But this idea that he can't throw from the pocket. Now, Jalen hurts from the pocket, I don't think's great. You know, Russell Wilson from the pocket, I don't think was great. Lamar's really above average from the pocket. And tonight, he was hitting. And they finally furnished him with decent wide receivers.

Mark Andrews doesn't feel like the player he was about two years ago. Tight ends tend to age fast. More collisions. They're asked to block. Their bodies get beat up. So about the time, Mark Andrews feels like he slowed down a little bit, you know, they finally drafted and developed some young wide receivers, but everybody was hitting tonight on all cylinders.

And so that's why, you know, when Baltimore got off to a sluggish, start, I said, you know, there's too well-run of an organization to bail on them. And I really, I really do think there are about eight organizations in this league that are really, really well-run. You know, we all know Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore, it's not just winning their well-run. I think the Rams aren't playing well-up, because they're all beat up. They're well-run. San Francisco's well-run. Generally, Philadelphia is well-run. And then there's about a third of the league that's a circus, you know, impulsive owner, you know, too many kids in the front office from the owner. They're just not particularly sharp.

So Buffalo and Baltimore are going to be around at the end of the season. This league is crazy. I guess, you know, we're going to talk about this with John. My surprise team this year before the season started, I said, keep your eye on Washington. So we've been right on that. Minnesota's playing. Minnesota may be the best coach team in the league, offensive head coach and defensive coordinator. They're Buffalo's.

Minnesota's defense is playing well, and it's not a highly heralded defense. But I think the early indications are Minnesota feels completely for real to me. Coaching, quarterback play, weapons, they feel absolutely real to me. Washington is really fascinating offensively. I think the coaching and the quarterback play is like kind of mind-blowing for a rookie. I still. I still. think they're fairly awful on the back end of their defense. And the question for Washington is if they start peeling off wins here, are they one of those teams at the trade deadline that thinks we're going to be a playoff team and can win playoff games? Do they go out and make a move at the trade deadline? I can see them doing that. Some draft capital, go get a player. Washington,

their efficiency on offense, I keep saying regression to the mean, it's going to pull back. I bet against them this weekend. I thought Arizona would win. It's just unheard of. It's like they're setting all sorts of records. Minnesota feels more legit than Washington. When Washington gets into the heart of their schedule, I don't think it's going to look like this. I watched Tampa Bay run through them like a hot knife. But Washington and Minnesota, two NFC teams, I'll tell you this, here's the other thing that jumps out to me. So the AFC is right now better than the NFC, and a lot of it's just a hit on like six or seven really good quarterbacks. Caleb this weekend got his feet under him. Jaden Daniels looks absolutely fantastic.

So I think J.J. McCarthy and Pennix can both play. But it looks like two guys that can really work in the NFC. So good for Chicago and good for Washington. Two win-starved franchises that haven't had great owners. Washington's got new ownership. Chicago's same old ownership, but they've got their quarterbacks, it looks like. All right. John Middlekoff, former NFL Scout, has the three and out podcast. I could start in a lot of areas. I'm going to start with Minnesota Green Bay because going into Lambo, 28-0-0 lead, it was weird. I said this Friday on FS1. I didn't want to bet this game because I could see two different. things happening. And one of the things I can see happening is Jordan Love without a lot of in-game reps against Brian Flores and just being rusty, just being off. I mean, Brock Purdy and C.J.

Stroud were like, this defense is insane. I've never seen anything like it. And I did feel like Jordan just kind of, it was moving real fast for him. And I mean, their special teams, their defense, it wasn't good either. Green Bay had, I think, seven penalties in the first half. But I did give them, I mean, they made it tight. Is it a fair defense of Georgia? love is this may be the best defensive coordinator. You're not getting in-game reps. This is a lot. I mean, this thing made Brock Purdy and C.J. Stroud look lost. Is that fair? Yeah, I think there's two ways to look at it. First, obviously, you miss that much time coming off a knee injury, and he's a player that's predicated on moving around a little bit. You could argue, did you need to do

after you won the last two games? Could you have waited another week and just see what you can do, muck up the game with Malik Willis? Now, the counter is, this is not the NBA. play when they're injured. They don't sit out with healthy, no matter what you play, right, if you can. And by the end of the game, he definitely looked a little bit better. But here's the thing, Colin. And this goes back to last year and even before he got injured in the Eagles games. He could be really sloppy with his footwork. Yes. And maybe he took

good notes from Aaron Rogers. I would say Aaron Rogers is one of the only players that has ever gotten away with it at the level in which he's gotten away with it. You know, Fav balls, he threw a lot of interceptions, right? I mean, it's it's not normal to throw the ball constantly off your back foot 40 yards. And when you're playing a high-end defense, I did a little research the last couple weeks, because I was like, do people in the league think Minnesota's for real? The Niners and the Texans both responded, hell yeah. And they came out today. Kevin O'Connell and Sam Donald, that first half looked like Joe Montana and Bill Walsh. And obviously their defensive coordinator,

like after that first half, it wasn't even close. No team was in their realm. of level of play through three weeks and a half. Not the Chiefs, not any other team in the league. And honestly, I guess we'll see the bills tonight, but not the complete game, the defense and the offense and the weapons they have, Colin. So you ran into a buzzsaw, but you can't throw intercept. He wore a far of jersey to the game. Jordan loved it.

And he played a lot like him in the first half, flinging it all over to the other team. Yeah, I mean, I think the knock on Jordan Love, and I heard this coming out of college, was he was, He was loose. He was talented, but he was really loose. And players that play like that, Mahomes can early in his career, generally, now the good news, he has Matt LaFleur. But players like that will revert back to that when things speed up. They'll get really loose. We've seen, by the way, Stafford earlier in his career could do this, where, you know, when things break down, you're running for your life, you're moving, you're trailing, you're just

trying to make plays. So I give Jordan Love a little bit of a pass. But I think the thing with Darnold that's unbelievable is that his precision. I mean, he had 20 to 28, seven rushes. So you're getting all the upside that we always knew with Darnold, which was, I can make place, a big, strong guy, and we're getting none of the reckless. So I was texting with a friend in the league today. He goes, Minnesota's got the best coaching staff in the league right now, top to bottom, the best coaching staff. Everything's hitting. And we know, this is an offensive league, and we always know who the hot offensive coordinator is. Ben Johnson a couple years ago or last year. We don't talk about the hot defensive coordinator. Mike McDonald for

Baltimore was, but you're overshadowed because it's an offensive league. Brian Flores, people forget when he was in Miami. Take the Tua thing out. He takes a mess over. They're not very good for about four weeks. They get pretty interesting for four. And by week eight, Miami had elite defense and special teams. And he has worked hard, Flores has, to clean up his reputation. When Tua bagged on him, he immediately addressed it and apologized. He smiles. Kevin O'Connell, by the way, have you noticed this, is letting Brian talk at press conferences. He's giving him an opportunity to like, hey, man, we're going to rehab your image here a little bit. Brian is smiling. I mean, clearly Minnesota, like, knows what they have, knows they're not going to keep him forever. He's going to get a job. We'll rehab your

reputation. But I think what Flores is doing, Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, C.J. Stroud, look completely lost. Yeah, Brian Flores is as good as it gets right now, a defensive coordinator. You could argue there are the equals right now of Andy Reed and Spags. But the difference is Andy, Andy, Andy has Mahomes throwing to me and you. He's got Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison. You know what Andy would do for Aaron Jones? I mean, they're offensive weaponry. And like you said, even the pick today, for Sam to Arnold to throw interceptions, guys are making great place. Yes. And his athleticism showing up.

This is a guy went from like, oh, he's going to get a good contract to every game that goes by. It's like, what is this team going to do? I mean, you don't let a quarterback who's playing like this walk out the building. You just don't. And with every passing week, I mean, they are dominating these games. I'm sorry. When you go up 28-0, we saw it in this game. we saw it in the Alabama game, it's a little bit different for the offense in the second

half than when the game is, you know, 10 to 7 in the third quarter. Just the corners, the debes, the coordinators are not calling the same things. But their speed on offense is eye-opening. I mean, Jefferson is an all-time talent. I mean, he just jumps off the screen. Addison is a fantastic player. And the play calling, everyone in the league, you talk to him, I talk. to him. Kevin is just like a very humble, low-key, you know, former quarterback, good-looking guy,

but he doesn't carry it. You know, Jim Harbaugh carries himself like a big swinging dick. Kevin O'Connell, when he's a pretty mellow, low-key, you wouldn't know he was San Diego State, you know, just drafted by the Patriots. You wouldn't know he's a former NFL quarterback just watching him on the screen. But as a play caller, I mean, he's right up there immediately with the Andes and the Kiles. And then he, a couple years ago, remember how bad their defense was and hiring Flores? It's, it's, they look like a juggernaut right now. Now, you never know Donald in some of these bigger games.

There's just, you won't know it until he plays it, but he keeps answering the bell against the best teams of the league. Yeah. And John, I don't think we look at Minnesota's talent defensively as elite. That's why every weekend, it's a different player. I mean, you watch the Chiefs today. Chris Jones is unblockable every Sunday. He's a Hall of Famer.

I mean, today it was ridiculous with backup offensive linemen. It was a joke. They could literally, even the running backs would come over to help. It didn't matter. He just blew through people. Minnesota is doing it with different players each week because they don't really have an errandonald. They don't have a Chris Jones. What they have as a collective, they're well-coats, they're lined up.

And again, Green Bay special teams were out of sorts. I'm going to give it a little bit of a Green Bay pass just because of it's like your first test is a calculus test in college. Like, that was a tough one for Jordan Love to walk into that defense and that momentum. But it's not, and I love Sam Darnold, but this story is equal. Darnold's redemption and resurrection and the defense, it is shutting people down. I think Green Bay is going to be fine. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.

I'm going to pivot to another game. Rams Chicago. Chicago beat the Rams 2418. And again, Rams don't have Puka, Cooper. their best offensive linemen. If they did, I think they win this game.

They just couldn't convert. They can't convert in the red zone very well. They don't have playmakers. Every drive for the Rams feels like it has to be like a 70 play drive. But I thought Caleb Williams today, speaking of the North. Now, again, the Rams weren't fully staffed. But I thought Caleb Williams today with a run game. So Swift had, I think, seven catches.

They had 125 yards rushing. Therefore, the offensive line was better. because the defense had to be honest. I thought Caleb looked, and again, they had these young quarterbacks. Even Jaden Daniels can struggle with this. You know, the motion penalties. They go on the road or it's loud. I mean, even Jordan Love, Aaron Rogers today, the Jets had five of them.

That's tough. But I thought Caleb today looked, feet were better, poised, O-line better, and he had a run game. And it's like, yeah, that's, I thought Caleb played. really well. Yeah, I mean, I still think he misses some passes that he definitely hit a lot in college. I don't want to call them layups, but there were a couple today, a DJ Moore down the sideline, but this is the formula for a young quarterback, 130 yards on the ground and 23 attempts. You know, what they did last week, 50 attempts when the majority of the game is within a

score is insanity. It's one thing when you got paid Manning or Aaron Rogers and you're not setting the guy up for success. And I'm with you. Like, they just have to find a way. Now, they kind of like bench swift, but then he started making plays. They were saying during the week, they were going to give other running backs a shot,

maybe to give him a little kick in the ass. Like, you're dancing around too much. We paid you to depend on you to help this young guy out. And he just, listen, you don't turn the ball over. The reason we talk about turnover so much and hear coaches talk, because in these NFL games, even early in the slate, You're like this seven games going on right now is terrible. Half of them are all tight in the fourth quarter.

So you give the ball away, it's pretty devastating. And he doesn't throw a pick, and you're only throwing the ball 23 times. Like, that's a successful strategy against, you know, most teams that you're going to play. But you cannot ask this guy to throw the ball 50 times a game and think that's conducive to winning. Not with a guy playing the fourth game of his career. who has a little hero ball syndrome to him. Yes. So when you're asking him to do it a lot, it's going to get a little out of whack.

Well, and the interesting thing, the tricky thing for Chicago is, and you saw it again today, Iber Fluse's defense situationally is pretty good. Matt knows what he's doing on that side of the ball. Now, Cliff Kingsbury obviously knows what he's doing on the offensive side of the ball. You're watching right now a master class. But a lot of these guys who are great. Some guys are vice president, some guys are CEOs. knows. Clearly, Iber Fluse knows defense because you have to, they don't give you a lot of freebies.

The Rams today, again, they had, didn't have Cooper, Puka, so it makes it really difficult. But when I watch Chicago today, I guess the word I would use is the one you used formula. I'm like, oh, yeah, this will work. They played, even when they led, it was just the off, it's just amazing. What a decent. It doesn't, you don't have to rush for 200 yards. 130. Just Swift popped about five runs, several catches, and it just, that's the formula. I still think this is going to be a seven-win team, but John, it will feel better than last year's seven-win team. You'll look at it and go, oh, we didn't have Keenan for a bunch of games. The defense is excellent. It feels, when I watch Caleb play and Justin Fields, I feel sometimes

Justin Fields is, he's lost. Caleb's wildly talented. He just sometimes misses easy throws, but I kind of, I feel like today a couple of times, his expression doesn't change. He doesn't get down. There was a couple of the clocks winding down.

I just felt Justin, I just felt Caleb felt under control today. Yeah, he definitely was less frenetic than the last couple weeks. And that's where Jaden has really thrived. You're like, does this guy even get, is he unflappable?

But one thing that you just mentioned, he's got going for him, and they've been hammered all year, is Brian Robinson, the running back from Texas, is a really good player. Hand the ball off to him. And that just calms everyone down. And the bears were not able to run the ball. I think the problem, though, big picture, if the bears only end up with seven or eight,

you know, you just got coaching flux, then you got new coordinators, then you got more movement. I mean, that's just always an issue whenever we talk about young quarterbacks and just young teams in general, because they do have a lot of talents. But if you couldn't win this game, Colin, The Rams, you know, understaffed, coming off a big win so, you know, they can inhale a little bit. That 10 a.m. kickoff for a West Coast team, long trip. This was, if you're not winning this game, you're probably, instead of heading for seven or eight, might be headed for five or six.

So this was a big game for Chicago at home, quiet the crowd a little bit because the fans are like, what the hell's going on here? Partly because the expectations were so high. That's why think about with Jaden Daniels. Both of them. I mean, these guys went one, two. Both of them won the last two Heismans. But the expectations for Jaden weren't nearly as high as Caleb just because of the avalanche hype, really over the course of his college career from three years ago when he came in for Spencer Rattler in a Kansas game and ripped the ball out of the guy's hands. And you watch Jaden Daniels and you go, I don't know how you could look much better,

just in terms of calm, poise, deep ball accuracy, accuracy across the feet. just zero freak out whenever there's a rush, throwing guys open. Like to me right now, and it's not apples to apples. They're playing on different teams. His offensive coordinator is clearly better. They sculpted an offense around him that just fits. He's in the shotgun. But Kingsbury has added more physical run game by adding Anthony Lynn,

who they stole from the Niners, who's kind of an old school running back guy. And it's just working. And I don't know how many games, how good their defense is, Ultimately, the Cardinals might just suck. But just if you just watch them independent of everything, you go, holy shit. This guy's got a lot going for him. So let's pivot to that. 4214, Washington goes into Arizona.

So this is one of my games I really liked. I liked Arizona a lot. I thought you talk about a good spot for the Bears, Rams off an emotional game beat up. I thought this was a great spot for Arizona. One of the two things that jump out to me, is how not only accurate, 26 of 30, 8 rushes, 7 yards of play for Jaden Daniels, how effortlessly accurate he is.

Moving left, moving right. Some guys, it's a strain. Like Sam Darnold, I always feel like has to kind of have his feet set to throw the ball accurately. Yeah. Jaden Daniels, it's just, Washington on run plays, on screen plays. on screenplays.

It feels there's so much space. I feel like it's easier. Jaden Daniels is, it's just easy looking to me. Colin, he has, in the last six days, they played on Monday night, attempted 53 passes, and he's completed 47 of them. And did they punt today? They might not have. They scored 42 points.

They definitely didn't put on Monday night. I mean, your offense, they didn't punt the week. before, it's impossible to be any less efficient. Well, when you're literally completing every pass and they're running for, they ran for almost six yards of carry, their run game. Fundamentally, like what I grew up around football, Pat Hill, Andy Reid's a little more physical than Cliff Kingsbury, but he has mastered what he does, that shotgun run,

and it's working right now for them. And clearly his quarterback is comfortable in that. and their offense has got to be one of the more fun units in the league to watch. But when you're completing it, that accuracy, like, Caleb still has passes where you're like, God, it's a little off. So is Jordan Love. Yeah. What's his name for the Broncos? Now, granted, it was a torrential downpour.

Balls flying all over the place, Bo Nicks. This guy, this looks like 2015 Aaron Rogers or something right now. I mean, just hitting guys in stride on every pass. short, wheel routes, intermediate routes, deep routes, two-point conversions where the field is way wider than it is long, so you've got to be precise. It is, I mean, he would be, we've got a long way to go, but the odds, you know, Caleb was like plus 150 to win rookie the year. This guy was like five to one. I mean, he's got a lot of momentum right now if he keeps this up. I mean, look at the division. Cowboys and Chambles, bunch of injuries. Eagles look like trash.

We know the Giants aren't going to win many games. Maybe you were right. Maybe this is a playoff team. Not even a playoff team. I mean, could they win the division? Long way to go. They were my surprise. This is my surprise team in the NFL was Washington.

I didn't look very smart after they got trounced by Tampa, but it looks good now. So it's really, I was talking to Steve Kime. I had dinner with him the other night. And, you know, people forget, Kime, two-time executive year. He had a really tough owner to deal with. And Kyler was very. difficult. Kyler just doesn't watch enough film and it's been an issue. I've supported him, but it's an issue. But I was talking to him about Cliff and he said, listen, he said,

Cliff now has tried head coaching twice. It hasn't worked. He says, but when you sit down with him and interview him, the reason he got head coaching jobs, he's really a brilliant guy. He's just not a, he's not a disciplinarian. Things got a little loose, right? Like, like it would get loose. But Kime told me when he went to Washington, he goes, that Jaden Daniels kid could not literally get a better guy. First of all, he's not a yell or no screamer. He's a teacher. He's fun. He likes to make it fun. He watches what you do, manufactures an offense based solely on what you do. And because Jaden moved, Cliff was banging on the table for this guy. He's like, guys, just, I don't want to hear about J.J. McCarthy. This is the guy. This is the guy. So he went all in on this. Adam Peters, the new GM, Dan.

Quinn, they listen to Cliff. Cliff was like, this is it. And it's just, this is very true. Brian Flores is the best defensive coordinator in football. His personality got in the way of his coaching as a head coach. Cliff's personality, the opposite of Flores. It's not intense. He doesn't bark. He doesn't discipline. Cliffs the opposite. So Flores and Kingsbury are the antithesis of each other, but in both instances, one guy is too intense or was. And one guy doesn't want to make and discipline, and you have to do some of it. Yeah. But Flores and Kingsbury are A++ plus at what they do.

And that we see this all over the world. Some guys are just salesmen. Some guys can be the president but couldn't sell anything. It's just the way the world works. When I watch that offense today, it's crazy. I don't remember seeing an offense. They're not fooling people. What they're basically doing is they're winning the math game.

They just look like, I mean, these runs, John. these running backs aren't having to create anything off contact. They're getting four and five yard runs before anybody initiates contact. It just looks so easy. Maybe I'm waiting for them to struggle and get into a fistfight, but it's like they're just, it's just up, down seven on seven. I've been saying this for a long time. The best part about the NFL, in most industries, you know, people fight and claw in the private sector.

in different corporations to try to sit the head of the table because it's so much more lucrative than a lot of different management spots. But in football, the number two spot, whether you're the offensive or defensive coordinator, especially on a team where the head coach is the opposite, pays you like $2 to $5 million. And you have no responsibility when someone gets injured, when someone gets a DUI, when who knows what happens, which we've all followed the NFL long enough, literally everything happens. Ain't your problem. You're still getting paid $3 million. And it's got to be one of the best jobs in America. It's still, you spend a lot of time.

It's a lot of work. But in terms of the amount of money you're getting paid and the amount when you're great, like Flores or Kingsbury, whoever, the best coordinator, Steve Spagnola. And none of the responsibilities on you. And you basically, in those guys individual spots, they kind of get to be the head coach of their group, right? Kevin O'Connell's not telling Flores what to do. Dan Quinn's not telling Kingsbury what. It's an incredible gig. Now, I understand there's a big difference between $3 million and $14 million or $10 million. But some of these guys, especially once they've tried it, like you could do this for a long period of time and just become a legend doing this. Like, where is Cliff? I would imagine maybe not the

NFL, but like over the next couple years, colleges are going to call them again, right? Yeah. And they pay a lot. I think 40 guys make over $4 million. I mean, you make a lot of money and you don't have to answer to anybody. Hard to get a better gig than that that he's got going right now, right? And I'd say the same thing for Flores. I do think Flores is going to battle, you know, like you said, did you see the viral clip of Kyle lighting into Brandon Ayuk for wearing the wrong shorts? I know.

It came out on Friday. Brennan Ayu came to practice with the wrong shorts. You know, in the regular season only like the press is only allowed there out there for 15. minutes. So it was the only time they were out there. And Kyle went up to him and lit him up. I mean, it was kind of embarrassing for Iuke. Like there's a dress code. He has the different shorts than literally the entire team.

And that's type stuff. You know, some coaches, like one thing I heard about Cliff is like, oh, just let that fly, let that go. And you can't. Like, that ain't flying. And Kyle's not, you know, Belichick here. But it's hard being, like, that's on you as a head coach. Little things, like the wrong socks. Right.

And I think Flores, dealing with the quarterback because that is kind of like the heartbeat of the organization is not really going to be anything he's going to be able to answer as a coordinator. But eventually if you're that good, you know, someone's going to give him another. Because he's, he's not good. I mean, right now he's elite. Like you said, defense more than offense too. It's usually about like you've got to have the Jimmy's and the Joe's.

And who do they got? Harrison Smith's like my age. I mean, who, what are they? John Randall's not on the defensive line. What are they pulling out there in Minnesota? So it's those two guys right now. You talk coordinators of the year through four weeks. I mean, it's Brian Flores and Cliff Kingsbury kicking everybody's ass.

Well, and also, I mean, the Cowboys have a coach in the hot seat. The Eagles have a coach in the hot seat. The Giants have a coach in the hot seat. The building in Washington right now is joyful. They're winning. They're young. They're ahead of schedule. And I think over the course of a long season, going to work happy, being on a winning show, being on a winning team.

In that division, there is a lot. lot of intensity. Week to week, there is a sh, you know what ton of pressure on McCarthy, Siriani, Daibol. That Washington building right now is like, how good, that's one of the best flights the Washington football team has flown in a decade. Arizona to DC, five hours. That flight, that's as big, I mean, if you're a commanders fan that you haven't seen that kind of competency forever. Yeah, I mean, RG3. Before he got injured was really a special talent running around. But he wasn't picking you apart in the pocket like this guy was.

So, you know, obviously his running was extremely special. And his arm strength was good. Jaden has both those. But the ability to just sit there like he's, I don't know, like a Mahomes or Herbert and make these throws from within the pocket. And like you said, Philadelphia, that place, you can only have, and maybe, who knows, Maybe Tampa and Jason Light and Todd Bowles. Just a great matchup against the Eagles.

I mean, they've kicked their ass twice in the last, whatever, six games, right, the playoff game and then this one. But you don't get too many of those when you come into the season with the pressure spending all this money. And that thing, that thing was on and it was on. So it's Tampa 33, Philadelphia. 16. Eagles looked unprepared. I was thinking about this. Time of possession, 36 minutes to 23. I mean, it wasn't close. And Philadelphia is the kind of team because of their offensive line prowess through the years. They do that to teams where they just play keepaway. You know, Jalen

Hertz may not get your touchdowns all the time in the red zone, but they dominate time of possession. They usually are that kind of team. Detroit can do that now with their offensive line. for them to get dominated. I was sitting watching that game and I thought, so they're not dominating time possession. They're not tackling well. Hertz is 18 for 30. They were out gained by,

I wrote it down here at 1.220 yards. I don't know where it finished, but it was close to that. They don't do anything well right now. Sequin Barclay is a great player. And you can't use injuries anymore. Like, there's no question. Philadelphia, the Chargers, they're beat up.

I mean, the Rams. They're beat up. It happens. But I can still see things the Rams do or teams that are beat up do. And I'm like, oh, that's, that's good football. I don't know what Philadelphia does well. And again, I thought this, you know, Tampa has been mowed over the previous two weeks. So we don't, we know they're a vulnerable team. We don't think they're playing like the Vikings. Do you think there's any chance?

I can't point to anything they do well. Like Iber flus, their defense is pretty damn feisty. He's a defensive coach. Do you think there's any chance Nick gets run in season? I think the Eagles are very hesitant to do that. I mean, who would they have to bump up? He's, you know, their coordinators, like they just want those guys to coordinate. And Nick, I don't really know what Nick's doing besides giving the thumbs up to go for on fourth down. I mean, we know about his rocky relationship with the quarterback.

Think about the game we just watched, Herbert and Mahomes, who both make an astronomical amount of money, who have injuries all over the place. Mahomes lose. Mahomes literally takes out his best receiver, probably blows out his knee. You know, Herbert's out back there running for his life. But when you watch him, you go, these are two special players. You watch Jalen and you watch him when he's off and you go, this is, it's hard to function. That game wouldn't have been as close as it was, Colin, if Seekwon hadn't busted like a 60-yard run that led him to a touchdown. That was looking like, is this thing going to be like 40 to 10? And Seekwan just busted a huge run.

run and they scored a touchdown, but that game wasn't remotely close. And when it's off for Jalen, like you said, injuries, literally the whole league's hurt right now. Yeah. So it's like you still got Dallas Goddard pro baller. You still got pro ballers on your offensive line. You got Sequin Barclay. You got more than functional wide receivers with, I don't think Tampa's exactly got Dion Sanders and Doreau Rivas back there right now.

And you just watch him, he gets down. And you go, I don't see it. I don't see it. Like I'm watching Purdy today and I'm watching Jalen Hertz. And I go, I don't even think it's close. Just a guy that calm can make throws. And you watch Jalen, and he kind of feels like the guy that you saw at Oklahoma that everyone thought, like, is this an NFL quarterback? Now, clearly he's better than that.

But once I give him $200 million, the expectations quadruples. And you watch him and you go, well, I'm watching Baker and I'm watching this guy. It ain't even close who's got the better quarterback. Well, I also think here's the reality. Most quarterbacks, Jaden Daniels, is getting really, really good coaching. Sam Darnold is not good enough to be really good unless he has an elite coach. I think we can have this opinion on Jalen Hurst. He's simply not talented enough to excel without elite coaching.

Because when he had it, he was good. Donald has it and he's good. Now, there are guys in this league, you know, Brady worked with Charlie Weiss. He can work with Josh McDaniels. He worked with Bruce Ariens. He worked with Todd Bulls. those are a handful of guys. Manning won trophies with, you know, four different coaches. But there are players in this league that have talent, but they need a special boss. And I think Jalen, to me,

I've gone from thinking he's special to I'm thinking he's potentially special with an elite Shane Steichen. And I think I feel the same way about Darnold. Like if you gave Sam a bad coach in 60 games from now, it wouldn't look this good. Like, how about this? Jalen's closer to Sam Darnold in that he needs absolutely two or three things for it to work. He's talented, but he's not talented enough to overcome mediocre coaching. I think Kellyn Moore is a good coach. Now, he was a pocket quarterback.

He was around Dak for a long time, who essentially is a pocket quarterback. And last year, he worked with Herbert in a pretty chaotic situation with Brandon Staley. I do think it's tough to overcome just this weird Siriani situation. Like they basically tell him like stay out of the way, but on game day he's still in charge. You ultimately work for him if you're one of these coordinators, but you kind of don't because what's he really telling you to do, especially if you're Fangio. And I think the Eagles tried to pass. I mean, I think they thought long and hard last year clearly after they got just Mollywopped

in that wildcard game against Tampa about firing him and just hiring them. and just hiring Belichick. I think that was a long and hard decision. And a lot of times when you make a long and hard decision, I think you could say this about a personal relationship. You're like, hey, think of a breakup of her. Six months later, you're like, I probably should have just done it back then.

Firing somebody, you know, I think it's the same. And I think you're kind of seeing, you're always going to have injuries. But this Siriani thing is, can you imagine the discussion tomorrow just in Philadelphia? And like these players, the coaches, Howie, that they all hear it. No one's like putting their earmuffs on what's going around.

It's one of the last cities in America where radio's massive. The local television shows do huge numbers. The Eagles are their Yankees and you lose. It's football. They got bludgeoned by a team that literally just knocked them out of their playoffs and ruined their season. And you might have to see again in the playoffs. And that's just.

And I think it gets back to also Siriani and the conversation is going to start coming up more as a quarterback good enough. You know, was that year, two years ago, perfect situation, perfect boss, perfect coordinator, going to be an outlier year. Cam Newton had one, right, the MVP year. Matt Ryan had one, Kyle Shanahan. It happens to players. Perfect situation, confidence is high, great coordinator, whatever.

And you look back at the course of their career and you go, yeah, he ended up making $250 million, but how many great seasons do you have? Now, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton, I, I, I think are better players than Jalen hurts. I mean, there's a reason one guy went one, the other guy went three. Like, Jalen was a second round pick that most people thought, like, was that a little rich? I thought that. And listen, I've been wrong.

I thought he was a running back. And I didn't think he threw the ball well enough. And he still doesn't throw, it's weird, he throws a good deep ball, but he can't, like, you watch Herbert today, doesn't matter where his feet are. That thing is he could throw a rocket anywhere on the field, all angles. So can Mahomes. Jalen simply can't. If his feet aren't set, if the pocket, the ball like flies, it flutters. It's not a pretty ball, Colin.

Yeah, and I think there is a reality. Philadelphia is an organization. It's the only organization in the league, the Eagles, that fire a lot of coaches and move off quarterbacks, but I don't think it's chaotic. Maybe it's because they have good ownership and Howie Roseman, a good GM. You know, Carolina mows through coaches, but Philadelphia does too. But they were right on Carson Wentz. I think Jalen's better in the locker room maybe than Carson Wentz was, so you stick with him.

Well, the guys like him more for sure. Yeah, yeah. And I think he's a really good kid. But I think we have to be honest about this. Playing quarterback is hard. He's smaller than you'd like. He gets banged up a little more than you'd like. And he's generally had above average players around him.

And the Eagles O line for most of his career has been top five in the league. When AJ and Devante are healthy, they're outstanding. And the tight ends in Philly for, they just, they're always good. Now he's got Sequin. So you have a very loud city, good, well-owned, smartly run. I'm going to be less patient. There's all, you can't always have, let's be honest, if you get a great coordinator, Steichen was going to get a job.

Tom Telesco, when he ran the Chargers, told me, because Herbert had Steichen's first year. He's like, we're not going to be able to keep this guy's guys. This guy's way too good. It's the same with a kid in Houston. Ben Johnson, they thought they lost, but he, you know, exit stage right on the plane, got off, it came back. So the truth is, you can't have a quarterback in paying him a fortune if everything's right. Now, is Josh Allen better with Brady than Dorsey? But he's still wildly productive when he didn't have the right guy.

And so you get to a point with Philadelphia's history is, John, they're not patient. you shouldn't have to have a quarterback. It shouldn't have to be perfect for it to be good. Jesus, Rishi Rice out for the Chargers. Their old line this year is not very good. Last year, they had horrible receivers. Now, not everybody is Mahomes, but my take is with Jalen Hertz.

Is this a guy where everything has to be right? Because when healthy, it's almost all right. Yeah, I think also, while the Eagles run through a lot of people, they had two stalwarts on their team that were, are the best two players on each side of the ball in jason kelsey who's a first bout hall of famer and fletcher cox who's probably a hall of famer those guys were drafted by andy read i was working for the eagles when both the guys got there so it's like you lose those two guys they both retire this off season it kind of all falls on the shoulders now of jalen you know and the

syriani thing so it's like i'm four moving on like if you're not good enough you're not good enough there's a bottom line business i also think though you know the the the The Carson Wentz was right at the tipping point when contracts were big, and now they're like historically massive. It does get a little more difficult with dead cap and signing bonuses, like to just cut it off after a year or two. You know, like this guy's getting another coach. Like when Siriani gets fired at the end of the year,

which I think we'd all bet on right now because this team's not going to go to the Super Bowl, like Galen's getting another year. And it'll be very fascinating also. how interested are people to work with them? Because it's kind of complicated, right? He's not just a plug-and-play guy. It's not, like Lamar's not either, but everyone would have no problem doing that.

You know, Jaylen's like, well, he's fast, but he's not running by everybody. He's got a good arm, but he's a little inaccurate at times and not that confident as a thrower. So it's, you know, is that Belichick and Josh McDaniels written all over you? I don't know. But where else he going? I mean, I'm looking at Trevor Lawrence,

barely throwing for 150 yards. Doug Peterson's 0 and 4. He's going to get ran out of town. They just gave that guy $200 million. I mean, that's, yeah. Is that just a plug and play job? I don't know at this point. Let me ask you, Albert Breer told me Friday,

keep your eye in Jacksonville with Belichick. So if you were Belichick and you could have Trevor Lawrence and a very rich owner or Jalen Hertz, a loud city, an aggressive media, because I mean, Jacksonville is like a small college. I mean, the media is pretty toothless. You get Trevor Lawrence, his contract's not outrageous, you know, right? Yeah. I mean, it's big, but it's not outrageous. The ceiling's low. There's not a ton of pressure. I mean, let's be honest. Jacksonville, you know, they're occasionally interesting, but there is no pressure there. Yeah. Or massive pressure, a smaller quarterback, turnover prone, probably not as gifted Jalen Hertz. Your Belichick, both offer, which do you take? I choose the Eagles in a heartbeat.

Like, I mean, I'm used to that if I'm Belichick. I was in Boston for 25 years. I can handle the bullets flying at me. I go to an organization that has proven they know what they're doing. You know, the thing with Jacksonville, okay, in a year we'll move off, Jalen. They still have a lot of other impact high in. They had a left tackle. They got multiple wide receivers.

I got Sequin under contract. They got young players on defense that I could use easily. You look at Jacksonville. Everyone goes there and loses. Everybody. Yeah. Every single person. And the cons, everyone seems to like them in the media.

I don't know them personally, but everyone goes there and fails and fails hard. And like sometimes we have to admit, like Trevor Lawrence got more than Jalen Hertz. I mean, they gave him $200 million guaranteed. And that contract, like Jalen's is starting to kick in. Like this thing kicks in like after this year, right? If you're Trevor Lawrence, he just might not be very good, Colin. I mean, it just might be that simple. We've seen infinitely more to Jalen Hurts than we have at Trevor Lawrence at this time.

I would choose Philadelphia in a heartbeat because, one, the owner has a history of like, I'll do whatever it takes. What do you need? Coordinators, help. You want me to rip down a building, build you a new one for a facility for the players. He'll do anything where it's like, I also think if you're Bill, you kind of like the bright lights. You know, you're Bill freaking Belichick, Vince Lombardi. You know, this is, this go to Jacksonville. Like, I, one, I'm not saying he would choose that, but I would hope if it came down to those two, he would choose Philadelphia.

All right. It wasn't pretty, and the weather was less than ideal. We talk about good spots and bad spots for young quarterbacks. I did not think this was a good spot for Bo Nix. Denver beats the Jets 10 to 9. I have two takeaways on this game. First of all, I thought it was a great spot for the Jets. Star quarterback, extra time to prepare against rookie quarterback, back-to-back road games.

Instead, Denver brought enormous pressure. Aaron Rogers got banged all day, 15 times, multiple sacks, hits. They could not protect him. They had, I think, five either delay games or offensive penalties at the line of scrimmage. I thought the Jets looked out of sync. Aaron had no time. Aaron took a beating today. And that's the second game in a row, Denver's defense.

Denver's defense, you know, they drafted a couple guys on that side. It's playing really well. I think it's playing over its head. But my bigger takeaway was undisciplined penalties on the Jets. maybe it's an outlier. Aaron got crushed. They couldn't protect him. That's not an elite defense in the eyes.

We're not talking Kansas City, even Buffalo, Baltimore. And by the way, Jets have Minnesota next in London. So this was like, get the layups. This was a layup. Extra prep time, lose to Denver. This is where Aaron kind of called Sala out after the game on some of his stuff. Does it go sideways or to what you just say, bad weather game, it happens? To me, when I'm watching the first half, I went, you know, headed on one of my screens.

Like, the box score means nothing in this game, right? You get a game. It's going to be weird. You just win it and move on. Bo Nicks threw for 60 yards. 60 yards. You cannot lose a game at home. I don't care what the weather is.

When the opposing quarterback, who's a rookie making his four-star throws for 60 yards, and they score 10 points and you lose. like you can't get to 12 or 15 and this just gets back and even Aaron says after the game like yeah the weather was bad in the first half but I was making bad throws he's running for his life yeah I mean

several times you're like Aaron you better get out of bounds and he's running as hard as he can to get because they're coming for him and you know this gets back to what did Denver have they have one of if not the best corner in the league and where they put that guy on their best wide receiver so it's harder for them

to operate and some of these other guys they aren't exactly rolling out. This is not Green Bay. They're not going three deep at that position. They're so dependent on him. And it was going to be hard, especially in the first half. It was just torrential down, porch, hard. You have to win that game.

But you know what, Colin, do they? Their head coach is Robert Sala, who now is just look at his history. Nice guy, not winning a lot of games. And we just don't trust their coaching staff. So it's like, Vince Joseph's come a long way from last year around this time and giving up 70 points. This year he's doing a really good job. Because like you said, they're not exactly rolling out pro bowlers everywhere on defense. But who are you taking?

Just in a game. Bad weather game, weird situation. Sean Peyton, Robert Salah. Even if you don't know the quarterbacks, you're taking Sean Payton every day of the week. And that was a type game where it's like, well, I thought the jets were supposed to be gritty and tough. It's like, okay, you're playing the Patriots. And listen, you and I and anyone that watched gave Aaron a lot of credit. It looked really good.

I watched a Patriots play the 49ers today. And the Niners treated a thing like a practice and won by 20. I mean, things are a joke. They're not any good. So, okay, it's the NFL, you want to win, but like, did we put too much stock in that game? Because I'm watching the day, it's like, well, where's your grittiness and toughness? This is a type game where your defense gets a couple touchdowns, weird game, but you win 17 to 10. But you score nine points, nine points.

Like, that's just, and it comes down to a field goal on a bad weather game that the dude missed. So let's be honest about this. So the Jets offense outside of a couple plays was abysmal against the Niners. It struggled against Tennessee, and it was pretty awful today. So we have to be totally honest. They have looked good. The Jets have looked good on a short week game against Jacoby Brissette and a rookie head coach at home against the Patriots. That's when the Jets looked good.

They didn't look good against Tennessee. They won. They got boat raced by San Francisco. they looked awful today. To me, this team has had one really good game against as we watch the Niners Hammer, New England, the worst team in the league. I think we're over. If the Jets played in Indianapolis, you know, I think we don't like their head coach. We know the coordinator is suboptimal. The offensive line today got worked by a hyper-aggressive defensive front without a pro bowler.

I mean, I just, I mean, Denver was beat up, I think, in the linebacking core. I mean, I watched that game and I'm like, okay, don't be too harsh. But you, that is not extra prep and that was the offense. Well, Colin, I understand they're stacking the line of scrimmage, but in a game like that, how is Rogers throwing it 42 times a game? They only ran 23 times. Like, that's a game where any good coordinator, to me, is running at 13. It would be one thing if you're down 17 to nothing.

They were up after half time six to nothing. So it's the game. And then they score it seven to six. Like that's a game where you're running it nonstop. But Aaron gets the play call. Like, is he listening to everything Nathaniel Hackett? I don't blame him. Because in Aaron's mind, I know more football.

I'm smarter than this guy. And the only reason he's there is because of him. It's a very weird dynamic, the whole thing. It's like it feels like Aaron's the superior, but he's there because Aaron wanted them. but it's just I just don't see how you're rushing for 20, like 23 attempts. Like to me, that number has to be well over 30 in a game like that. It'd be one thing if he's averaging 10 yards to say, hey, they're still being explosive in the weather.

They're not. I mean, he was dinking and dunking even when he was completing balls. Partly he couldn't even grip the ball. And every time he went back there, like you said by the end of the game, he just hurt his knee? You know, he's kind of getting up because he's getting pepper. Oh, no, no, he, Aaron took a beating. I'll give him credit.

Aaron was not short on passion or effort. No, he was into it. No, for sure. Totally into it. I don't know why they're calling so many past plays. Like, just make it easier on the guy. Don't they go too deep at running back? I mean, the backup, the kid from Wisconsin, the 21-year-old is like 240 pounds.

Raylan Allen had eight carries a day. Like, how does he not get 15 in that game in that weather? You and I have lived in the Northeast. On a day like that, it's brutal. It's brutal if there's no football going. on, let alone slippery, right? It's that turf in New York that everyone hates. You're asking Aaron to drop back a lot. That's a brutal loss. I mean, that is a brutal loss. Even if Denver turns out to be solid, like, you're going on the road to Minnesota. I think in a, in a

week, they play Pittsburgh. I mean, their schedule, I remember looking at it, like, it's kind of, this they could get, we just do not trust their coaching staff. And the NFL, you know, in college, you see it all the time. Like even when the game plan's bad, if you got better players, like you got no shot. Like USC, like these got way better players in Wisconsin.

So even if they're off, like, who cares? The NFL is just not like that. Like, unless you're the 07 patch or some of these teams that are so dramatically talented

than the opponent, like what the hell's the big difference for the New York Jets than Denver Broncos? Maybe they're better if you just put them on a neutral field and beautiful weather, but that's not football. And that's not the NFL.

So you get this spot. It's like, well, Vance Joseph and Sean Payton for the last second half of last year and so far this year, like kind of feel like they know what they're doing. And Robert Sal and Nat Hackett, now we got pretty long evidence that given their spots, like Salah as a defensive coordinator, as a head coach, it just hasn't been great. And it's like this excuse, this excuse, that excuse. Like eventually you either win or you don't. Yeah, when Sala left, didn't Damiko Rhyans take the job? and he was better. Yeah, as I'm saying.

So usually if you're a good coordinator and you take a job, you are not replaced by somebody that is viewed as better. Right now, when Demico left, it was Steve Wilkes. That wasn't better. So generally, if you're a hot shot coordinator and get a job, you don't upgrade. And I got nothing against Sala, but I know enough people inside the Niners organization.

They looked at D'emico as a superstar. But just look at, you know, in fairness to Sala, like D'Amico is a superstar. But look at him. Yeah. He's better and solid defensive coordinator, becomes a head coach,

immediately just good. Last year makes the playoffs, going to cruise the playoffs again. He just knows what he's doing. And I think it's just one of those jobs, either kind of got it or you don't, and we know fast, and you feel it when a guy walks into the room,

like I've been around Andy Reid, Harbaugh, you just know it. And Domeco was that guy as a player. When I was with the Eagles, we traded for Domeco. He just, we traded his play. He'd torn his Achilles. and same player, but we valued as intangibles, as smarts.

And it's translated, the guy went from like graduate assistant or quality control to the defensive coordinator in like three years. I mean, it's unheard of it. This guy made millions. So it's like, why are you even coaching Domeco? It's because I was born to do this. And clearly it was. Robert Sala, it's just nice guy.

I think he's a good defensive coordinator. But this whole situation, just a lot like the Eagles with Siriani, it just can get weird and it can get weird fast. and partly because they're markets, right? Yeah, listen, there's no question that certain markets are loud. I remember when I worked in Tampa. Tampa is like the 14th biggest city in the country. It plays like it's 80th.

It's just quiet. Like the media is like your friend. Nobody's really, you know, there's nobody with real teeth. In Philadelphia, everybody's got teeth. In New York, you know, you've got still four active newspapers. You know, newspapers are dying. New York, they're still around the batting cage at Yankee Stadium. They're at practice.

Let's go to Kansas City 17 Chargers 10. Yeah, I was thinking about this, you know, because when the game was starting, Jim Nance and Romo were talking about the injuries and, you know, Derwin James, Slater, Bosa, and they were talking about some of the injuries. it's a lot of guys that get hurt all the time and they got off to a 7-0-0 lead

Herbert to that Lloyd McCaugh's the kid oh god that back of the end zone touchdown throw is just it just illustrates how hard it is to be a successful quarterback

Chargers had three sacks already they lead 7-0 you felt like Herbert was limping but it was working and you're like oh chargers are a little bit of a hole But watching, my two thoughts were the same charger players and a couple of them are already expensive.

The same guys are getting hurt all the time. Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Harbaugh got rid of them. They just weren't healthy. I kind of think they're going to move off Bosa eventually. He's done after this year. And Derwin James, they're just hurt all the time. Khalil Mack's been really good for them. I mean, he looks fantastic, doesn't he?

Yep. And they've got a couple of pass rushers out there. They've drafted well. They've got some players. But when your same guys are getting hurt, even if they're high profile, I think year two for Harbaugh, maybe at the trade deadline, he may move off some more guys. He wants dependability. But as I watch Kansas City, and again, Herbert's running for his life because they have backups starting on all over the offensive line. I feel like every Kansas City game now looks the same.

Every one is that, you know, they'll fall. on a hole or you watch them early and you're thinking, this isn't the Sunday. They just, they're just not. And then Rishi Rice gets hurt very early. And I'm like, they're on the road. They're out of sync. Chargers had multiple sacks. And then they just, and I think so much of this is Andy Reid and specs, they just slow the game down. They're really good at killing momentum. Mahomes had a couple of big runs. He had a couple of beautiful passes. Kelsey was more visible today. and available, obviously, with Rishie Rice out, Travis Kelsey becomes more available. But there is something about Kansas City is that we tend to love Flash, like Darnold's

numbers. And I like Kansas City, but I ask you, if they played Minnesota tomorrow, I would take Kansas City. What are we supposed to make of this team that isn't pretty? Every single game is close. It doesn't matter who the opponent is. They don't start necessarily well. they always end great. Do you worry at all that Kansas City's sort of following in this, it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's, they're just winning the same way and they're not playing particularly well for long periods of time. Yeah, I feel like Spags and Andy are just like, you know, you fill up the refrigerator and they're making meal after meal and every time they're using different ingredients, you're like, how are you doing this? Eventually, if you don't go to the store, you're going to run out stuff to make food with. And today, after Mahomes, eat through a pretty,

bad pick early in the game. A terrible one. And then he hit, he didn't mean to, but Rishie Rice is their best receiver. And he kind of ended up hitting him like he's John Lynch because he was trying to make a tackle. Might have blown out his knee. Like that's, so you, let's just hypothetically say he's gone for a long period of time or the season. That's pretty devastating. They were playing with Kareem Hunt.

This is not 2018. He's back on the team because they're starting running back just broke his leg. and the other kid from Missouri, his own family threw a wedding last Sunday because they didn't even think the guy was going to be an NFL player. So I just, I don't know, like, it's remarkable what they're doing. And they've been playing like this basically for two and a half years now. It does feel eventually like, I love these guys. And they are, it's truly one of the great runs of my lifetime, any sport, what they're rattling off now, these over this five years. but specifically these two years,

I don't know how you can maintain this. Eventually, you're going to, obviously, they're going to lose some games this year, but like they're margin for error in a playoff game. It's just very, very difficult for them to score. And Mahomes cannot, and you saw Andy get kind of mad early, you cannot turn the ball over.

You know, and I think Andy felt right away, like this Charger team came to play. This Jim Harbaugh, they're ready. Like, this could be 15 to 13 final score, and he air mails it and steel fumbles. And it's like, you could tell Andy was, pissed because this has to be a flawless we hold on to the ball even if we're going to score 14 points total okay well win at 14 to 10 we can't hand them the ball at their own 30 yard line

and I think if the two tackles are there chiefs easily could have lost today I mean they are holding on it's it's competitive character the toughness it's it's what you get out of like some of those late 90s bulls teams some of those curry cleats Draymond teams. Like, they're the only team in the league that has this in the back

to keep doing this. Like eventually you just drop a game, whatever. And they just, they refuse to lose. They got nothing. I mean,

their best receivers carted off the field five minutes into the game. They're riding Kareem Hunt, who I'm pretty sure wasn't even in the league like three weeks ago. But they had no choice

because their other guy broke his leg. Yeah, no, as I watched that game, they got, I mean, listen, they got an injury break.

The chargers are missing. Tackles, Abosa, Derwin James. They were missing their best athletes defensively. And it's the NFL, you have to make up for that. But as I watch them, you know, they're going for a third straight. It's a tough opponent for that because their defense, Chris Jones and Spags, they just kept on any

third and long, they would just put 95 over one of the tackles, even though he's a defensive tackle. So it's like, I just become a defensive. They wouldn't do that with Alton Slater in the game. That's right. So it was a total mismatch. You're just kind of screwed. And I think what they do with Chris Jones, there's no rigidity with the chiefs.

Like, you know, the saying I use all the time at the volume to everybody is, don't worry about being right, get it right. Don't get stubborn on stuff. It's a fluid business change. The chiefs, like you said, they go into the cupboard and whatever's available they use. Like, they're not a rigid franchise, which, by the way, New England became in their dominance. I mean, Belichick basically took over the drafts. Belichick only wanted to coach.

players he liked to coach. They got very rigid. They started buying into their own stuff. And by the way, Greg Popovich, you know, I'm not going to deal with Kauai. Well, you probably should, he's great. The danger of the danger, one of the things I always respect about Saban, he just kept hiring great coaches. He went from a defensive culture to a quarterback wide receiver culture. Sabin was just like, whatever wins wins. And I always said that that's really different with Sabin. He didn't have Belichick's ego. He was willing to just pivot off. guys, move into guys. I mean, good God, in the middle of a national championship game, he changes quarterbacks. Sabin was whatever wins works. I feel with Andy Reid, I get that.

I get, I don't feel like there's this definitive sort of moral standard, this saying, you know, just do your job. Kansas City doesn't have one of those. They don't have a do-year job, right? They don't have one. They just, they do what they have to do in the series to score. Yeah, I think Andy, what makes him pretty special is every guy knows you got to do your job, because he won't cut your or trade you. But he doesn't talk like that. I mean, this is a California kid at his core.

He wore sandals, right? You see Nick, when do you ever see Nick Sabin? Not, I mean, most of the time in a suit, but if not in a suit, slacks in a polo. You see Andy's in rainbow sandals. You know, he's, right. He vacations, you know, he's a beach guy, L.A. So I think that's kind of his core and his personality, but he has high standards. And I think that's set by their core leaders in Mahomes, Jones, and Kelsey now.

I do think they benefit. Is the league watered down is the wrong way? But it's definitely not as top heavy because the Bills and Ravens play tonight. Well, Chiefs been beating them for years, right? In big games. So it's not like Mahomes and Andy would be intimidated in those spots. but who else are they really worried about, right? The Steelers?

No. You think Justin Fields has beaten them? It'd have to be Buffalo. And Lamar in a game to beat the Chiefs would have to be awesome throwing the ball because they are not going to let him run around. They just aren't. I think that's why Buffalo this year is interesting

because they have a legitimate running game and they're much less Josh Allen reliant. They have two excellent tight ends and excellent running back. And so I feel like Houston would be the wild card too, I would say. I don't trust Houston. I think when Joe Mixon's healthy, they're tough.

They're a tough out. I think as good as C.J. Stroud is, we saw it with Caleb Williams today. Young quarterbacks need to run game. Just changes everything. I mean, I love what Jaden Daniels is doing, but they're running the hell out of the ball, Washington. He's getting, you know, there's a lot of second and fours, third and one. It just opens up everything. And so I think Buffalo finally is given Josh.

James Cook's a real running back. He's explosive. So I think that's the play. But I just, again, I'll go back to it. When I watch Kansas City, generally with dynasties, we get this. You know, Durant shows up in Golden State for three years. They look different. Bama, Saban, look different. Georgia for a couple years, look different. I mean, hell last year, Michigan was so dominant, they didn't throw the ball on the road against rivals and beat Penn State. It looks like a dynasty. If you just saw the chiefs on a week to week basis and had to guess, who's the best? team in the league, you wouldn't put them in the top six. Like, I mean, Mahomes makes a terrible throw. I mean, they got so lucky today he threw a pick. Then the guy fumbled down the sideline. Like, I mean, it just doesn't look like it should. This year, they're not going to have enough. But over the next couple of years, if you were on the bus with Andy going back, he'd go,

that guy, Jim Harbaugh is going to have that team looking like ours. And you felt it today, like, and they just ran out of gas and Herbert limping around. I was thinking about this watching the Alabama game. Three of the last four games, Caitlin Dubour has worked Kirby Smart, Steve Sarkisian, and Dan Lanning. The one guy who kicked his ass. Now, granted, Michigan was a lot better in Washington, was Harbaugh. Du Bois destroying these other guys.

They're all making 10 to 12 million and running college football. And Jim Harbaugh has proven, you see that status. The first time ever a reigning national champion had played. the reigning Super Bowl champion. You know, I think there's a 50-50 chance Jim Arbaugh wins a Super Bowl. Like, he's that level of a guy. Yes. It was awesome to watch his team today just come out.

Like, they were there to brol. And they were not, and how much money did they have sitting in the suite? $300 million? Right. I mean, so it's just wait till they over the next couple years are able to build it up. Andy's been in Kansas City, how long now? 11 years. Like, it's going to take them.

a couple years, but if they can keep Herbert healthy, that thing's going to be real. Because that style, exactly what the chiefs are doing, always translates. Tackle everybody, rush the passer, run the ball, and have a good quarterback. Who just, it's weird. Like, he wants a game manager, but with that type skill set. Because I watch Herbert today, and I don't know what his box score was, and I bet half the people talking about it will be like he's overrated. Like, I don't know what you're talking about.

That guy, I'd take that guy on my team any day of the week and twice on Sundays. All right. I want to, I want to have one college opinion. So I watched, you know, some Alabama, Georgia. And so Carson Beck coming into the year felt like the, no doubt about it, number one pick. He had three picks. Brock Bowers is so talented. I mean, people have asked Kirby Smart.

I've had a couple conversations with people about Brock Bowers when he was going to get drafted and people would call Kirby Smart and they would ask him, what do you think of your tight end Brock Bowers? And he's like, listen, man, we're Georgia. We have good players. There's nothing on the planet like that. When you watch Georgia's quarterback without Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey, okay, he's a great player. But when you watch him without that safety valve, Brock Bowers, there's no way I could draft Carson Beck number one. Absolutely no way. Now, I think Quinn Ewers is really interesting. Shudor Sanders is a talent. Do you want to deal with the other stuff? I'm not sure. I think Cam Ward's insane. But it's, I watched that Georgia Bama game and I'm thinking,

I'm sorry, we didn't think it was a good quarterback class. I think Cam Ward and Quinn Ewers, you cannot watch. I thought Carson Beck just does not look like a number one guy in the board. You take away that tight end weapon and that slot weapon. They still have the best talent in the country. It, it, that was my take on that game is I thought I picked Alabama to win. I thought Alabama would win. It got very close at the end. There was a million plays in the second half. I mean, you could talk about that game for four days. But that was my take is that Cam Ward is becoming with Quinn U.S. They're becoming the top two picks. Yeah, you know, I hadn't really, Georgia's last couple years, they don't play in any meaningful games until the end of the season. But these last two weeks against Kentucky and Alabama, this guy looked completely overwhelmed. I mean, they easily could have lost to Kentucky, who actually might be pretty good, beat Ole Miss. And then last night, to me, those 50-50 balls, in the second half. Like, that's not NFL football. In the first half, when it was on, and he had to drive the ball and fit it into windows,

he looked completely overwhelmed. Now, it's not saying he's not talented. He's not an NFL player. But to me, he's like a second or third round pick. I couldn't take that guy in the first round. Are you insane? Have we seen? And like you said, all these guys had him on the top of the board.

And these last couple weeks, you're watching them. And there's a lot of pressure. And you go, yeah, it's not. I don't care how many yards you throw. for when you're down 33 to 15. I'm sorry, the defense isn't quite playing like they were when it was 7-0 or 14-0-0 in the first quarter and it's all in the line. The lights are the brightest. And the everything, John, when you watch Quinn Ewer's arm strength, there's there's YouTube videos of him in high school. It was like a pro when he's like 17. The ball flies out of Quinn Ewer's

hands. He was just sort of lifestyle diet. He was just undisciplined. He had like a Jay Cutler feel. You're like, does he love football? He's kind of a mess. Well, Sark's got him buttoned up. That ball flies out of his hand. Cam Ward's Electric with a good arm. And Shadur is, I mean, the kid is weirdly accurate, throwing off one foot. These last two weeks for Shadour, like, if you want to make the argument for him to go number one, to come off that win, a little bit of a miracle win, what happened the next week?

You can either, like, could they lay an egg here? They came and blitz those guys. And he was making throws. his talent compared to Carson Beck's talent is not even close Not in the same conversation Like the Carson was scouts last night I was like, is this guy in first rounder? Like where's he going?

There was a lot of everyone's watching this thing The entire league, the scouts, I can't even imagine how many scouts were in attendance. A lot of people, you could, the box score the end of the game, I'll promise you a lot of scouts leave to go home in the third quarter, watch the fourth quarter on the on TV. Like that first half is something you'll never forget if you were in attendance or you were a GM watching at your hotel room.

You can't. You can't. You can't. How good is Kaelin do, Boar? Well, I was talking to a friend that's a booster at the University of Washington, and I think Jed Fish is a good coach. But if you go to last year's team that played for the national championship, all their talent was on offense. It was all on offense.

They just didn't have a lot of, I mean, they had a decent defensive tackle that I think the Rams got undrafted free agent. They had one good corner. Huskies always have breached. pretty good corners. But it was just like, Kaelin got a team. Kailen didn't win nine games there. He beat Oregon three straight times in two years. Oregon had better players. And we think Dan Lannin's good coach. He was a nine point underdog in the Pac-12 championship last year against Oregon. And a five-point underdog against Sark.

And just Kailen DeBore, there is, this is a reference that people will forget Don James, but I grew up with Don James as a Husky coach. And Sabin credits Don James for his early coach. Acumen. And Washington never lost a game they should have. They always won the games, and they often pulled upsets. I don't think there is, before the game starts, he may create the best game plans. Like some coaches are good adjustment coaches. Some coaches are great recruiters. A lot of these college guys can recruit. They're not great play creators, play callers. Lane Kiffin is, but he can also recruit. Lane's pretty good coach. But Kalin-de-Bor's a very good coach. But Kalin-de-Bor's ability to get three-star athletes, turn them into four and five-star players so he can recruit.

He can develop. His game plans are insane. I mean, they just, every time they played Oregon, first three series, Oregon's in a hole. I mean, Georgia had won, what, 42 straight regular season games. It was over. He may create the best game plan. And some guys are just great in the film room.

They're just, they're film room wizards. But, I mean, I bet, bet Alabama. winning the first half. I mean, for the next eight years, because that's what he did at Washington. And by the way, in Washington, didn't have anything close to Bama's talent. You know what he is?

He's an extension because this guy, you know, was just kind of over it and had opportunities to go different places after Washington and didn't. But he's Chris Peterson. If Chris Peterson had chose to go to the S. He's just, he's intense in the sense of like high standards. There's not people aren't screwing around. And there's an intellectual capacity.

there that is higher than basically everyone he's going up against. I'm sorry, Kirby, high-level guy, his resume speaks for itself, but just in terms of schematics, like, I'm taking Du Boer. I mean, I just am. And it's an offensive sport. Even Nick has admitted to that. So Kirby's just had a disadvantage. You just take the offensive coaches, right?

I mean, look at Sark. Look at Ryan Day. It's an offensive sport, especially in college. But Kalin Dubour, I think, the total package of he clearly knows what he's doing. Like it's undebatable now. But his offensive prowess, which I was like, what's he going to look like without his guy Ryan Grubb that goes to Seattle?

Oh, exactly the same. I mean, to be up 28 nothing like that at home against, it's borderline impossible to follow a Vince Lombardi or a Nick Saban or a John wouldn't, I don't think it could go any smoother after last night for that guy. Nick's already given him his blessing. You eventually have to do it. But to work Kirby like that, you can't convince me that was a close game. It was 33 to 15 with 10 minutes to go in the game.

They hit a couple big plays. Now, it ultimately, Bama had to hit a big play, which they did. But that was, that was domination, Colin. That was to come out like that at home. I mean, is he getting a contract extension at the end of the year? I know he just got hired, but I mean, how do you do? How do you go from Nick Sabin to that? How lucky are that?

Well, and he's also smart because he inherited momentum. And I think what he did, he inherited momentum. I mean, he's turned Jalen Milro. Like, I never thought Jalen Milro was a pro. And I watch him and I'm like, Jesus, efficient, throws a pretty deep ball. I mean, there's just something in his coaching. Michael Pennix, you could see very quickly through a beautiful ball. Left-hander, a lot of scouts don't like. But it was pretty clear earlier. Like Pennix throws, he's like a bigger. He's like a bigger. to a the ball's too pretty he's so he's going to get drafted i didn't when i watched jalen milroy i was like kind of athletic his game is cleaned up like had him looking like josh allen in the first quarter last night would you rather have jalen milrow in the third round or carson back in the first i know which one i'd choose yeah so i was having this conversation with something today and i said i just so you know once again coaching it could be the vikings on both sides it could can be what's happening in Washington. I mean, Jesus, give Sean Payton credit on a, you know, it's a short week when you play on the road, go home, although I think they stayed out east.

But it's hard. I mean, sometimes you're at a disadvantage. You have Aaron Rogers. I have Bo Necks. You're at home. I'm on the road. That's a disadvantage. You pull a win out like that. Coaching's just bigger than we think. I know we've got to get out of here, but I think it takes, I don't think many people could walk into the shoes of Sabin. He's still around. I mean, he lives in the town. Obviously, he does the game day stuff, but it feels like he's always around Alabama. That cannot be.

He recruited half the team. He just coached Jalen Milro last year to the playoffs. Had Michigan on the ropes. That guy's still going to games. He's been to several games this year. That's not easy. I mean, this guy, I mean, is borderline Jesus in the state of Alabama,

and that's who you're taking over for and to have a go like this. Because I think they got a guy who is secure enough in himself because he's nothing like Nick. He's not a screamer and a yeller. He's much more, like I said, with Chris Peterson,

much more cerebral, much more mellow, but he's so good schematically. At the end of the day, the highest level players in college, you can either resonate with them. Now, Nick's a great scheme guy too, but Nick was so intense. They were kind of scared.

This guy just knows everything that's going on football-wise. How do they not listen? They clearly are, and it's working. I mean, it's not out of the realm possibility that they're in the national championship game, is it? after what we just witnessed last night?

No, I think if I had to guess today, I would say, Texas, Ohio State, and Bama look different. And I think what happened to George, I didn't think it would look like that. But I don't look at them the same with their quarterback. Like you could tell me they could losing the elite aid or whatever, however the brackets are now. John Middilcoff, former NFL Scout,
