I have so many thoughts on this.
Starting point is 00:03:50 You know, first of all, the Gino Smith story, the Seattle quarterback, it's really unique. There's just not a lot of comp. bust, bounce around, reborn, pro bowler. It just doesn't happen. And, you know, I was thinking about this tonight is that I think if you've listened to me for any period of time, like, I'm just not a romanticist with sports. I just don't care about the rearview mirror stuff at all.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Like, I want something that makes me win today. If I said to you right now, we all put about Kirk Cousins in that 12 to 13th best quarterback in the league. If I said to you now, Gino Smith or Kurt Cousins, Gino Smith is younger, bigger, more mobile, and cheaper. I would take Gino Smith. Minnesota's moving off Kirk Cousins. Gino Smith, passer rating last year over 100 this year after tonight, probably at 100. This is who he is. He grew up. So he's 6-3-220. Kurt Cousins is about 6-3-200 to 205. Cousins is not mobile. Folds like a deck chair when he gets hit. Gino Smith is a big,
Starting point is 00:05:02 strong, younger athlete, and you're not paying nearly as much for him. So his, I mean, it's really interesting to watch him play. You just have to erase the first go-around. And, you know, a lot of people are late blooms in life. Generally in pro sports at quarterback, you're just not granted that opportunity. A lot of people in a lot of careers, you know, they just, they come from a bad place, a tough childhood. It takes him a while mid-30s to find themselves. You know, unfortunately, professional sports, pro football is very cruel when it comes to quarterbacks. They want you to be mature and ready to roll at 21, 22 years old. And Gino Smith wasn't. New York just engulfed him. But what a great story he is. And again,
Starting point is 00:05:46 he's a really good quarterback. In the NFC, you know, he's one of those five or six guys that, you know, big moves, experienced, accurate. NFC's pretty weak for quarterbacks. AFC's a different ball game. NFC, you go in playoff games with Gino Smith. You cannot with Daniel Jones, who is now 1 for 12 in prime time, 0 for 7 on Monday night football. And I was thinking about this. The NFL, and just open your mind to this. So Brian Dable's trapped. Great coach trapped. He wanted the Chargers job. I think deep down he won in Justin Herbert he was friends with the GM
Starting point is 00:06:28 Tom Telesco but the Spanos family chose Brandon Staley he's trapped now you can't get out from under this quarterback contract they can draft a quarterback but they have so many needs O line wide receiver tight end maybe another corner they you know they can't draft the quarterback
Starting point is 00:06:45 to me in the first round they're invested in Daniel Jones and Brian Daibble knows this So teams move off coaches all the time before their contract. If you're Brian Dable, end of the season, resign. Call your agent. I know a team that would give up a first round pick, maybe a couple. Think about a team that has their quarterback, has their left tackle,
Starting point is 00:07:12 has their center to call the audibles, has their rush end or two, has their receivers. Oh, I don't know. The Chargers? They can give up a first-round pick. And maybe a second the following year, they have all the big boxes checked. They need another corner because the J.C. Jackson gamble is not paid off. They got all the boxes checked on the O-line, on the perimeter, edge rushers. They've drafted exceedingly well.
Starting point is 00:07:38 I'm not saying Brandon Staley's going to be replaced today, but if things don't work out, Kellen Moore, is he really ready to be an NFL head coach? He's a tremendous coordinator. I think you'd have to look at Brian Dable. Go to your agent, get me out of here. Teams move off coaches all the time. Everything, folks, is negotiable. Everything is negotiable. I've had 12 contracts in my life. You'd be, and I'm certainly not an NFL head coach. Everything's negotiable. We've seen it before, trading picks for coaches, because I think Brian Dayball is trapped. I think he has a great reputation. If he resigned at the end of the season, put his name out there,
Starting point is 00:08:17 oh, he would have more than one or two offers. really respected guy. And I was thinking about the situation the Giants are in. So forget the AFC, where you've got Mahomes and Burrow and Allen and Lamar Jackson and Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert. Just think of the NFC, which is the weaker quarterback conference. So this morning I was writing some notes down. I went and found it.
Starting point is 00:08:42 So nine teams of the 16 have a better quarterback than Daniel Jones in the NFC. Rams, Dallas, Philly, Detroit, Minnesota. New Orleans, Seattle, Arizona, when Kyler gets back. And Geno Smith is better. Excuse me, San Francisco. Brock Purdy is better. He is than Daniel Jones. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:09:01 You can say at Shanahan, whatever, he performs at a higher level. Brock Purdy so far performs at a higher level. We all know Daniel Jones was a reach at number six. We all know the contract was a reach. So you can count San Francisco or not. It's either eight of 16, half the NFC or nine of 16. and the thing to worry about, the bottom of the NFC is much worse than the bottom of the AFC. We know the Raiders are going to get beat up and not won a lot of games.
Starting point is 00:09:27 But Chicago, Atlanta, for sure, are going to get two of the best quarterbacks much higher prospects than Daniel Jones was. So they'll get like Caleb Williams, a Drake May, a Michael Pennix, much better quarterback talents than Daniel Jones. And those teams for four years won't have to pay the quarterback so they can load up on the roster and have a better quarterback. And then Tampa Bay could fall in that. So you got at least half of the NFC that has a better quarterback. And then you have three or four teams at the bottom of the NFC, a Chicago, Atlanta, a Tampa. And maybe, you know, maybe somebody else in the NFC that can grab a quarterback that's more talented than Daniel and load up on their roster.
Starting point is 00:10:05 They're in a really, really tough spot, the New York Giants. And again, this game tonight was a blowout. So I counted eight blowouts. And with the exception of Burrow losing to Tana Hill, the other seven blowouts, were a good quarterback blowing out a weaker quarterback. As I talked about yesterday, as this league, I said this like four years ago, the only downside to making this league so offensive is that increasingly there's only one way to win. You got to get the quarterback right, and then you better have a left tackle to protect him, right?
Starting point is 00:10:40 Like, there used to be boxes you had to check, and we all know you need to pass rush or a left tackle a quarterback. But what happens, T.J. Watts great. Steeler's got blown out yesterday. Why? They're not very good on the offensive line at quarterback or offensive coordinator. So, you know, you start looking around right now. And, you know, the Giants are trapped with an average quarterback that's overpaid and too many positions to fill on offensive line and wide receiver to, you know, I mean, you can go again for a quarterback. I would have no problem with it. They do have their left tackle. but my guess is the Giants will win enough games in the NFC, six or seven, that they'd have to trade up, give up picks. Maybe they do that. But I got news for you. Chicago, Atlanta, and Arizona are not trading down if they want to take quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:11:31 I mean, these quarterbacks are really good prospects. If the Giants are behind teams and they're mostly NFC teams, those teams are not letting the Giants, you know, unless they give them seven picks, they're not letting the Giants move ahead of them. You know, a New England would for pick. and stay with Mack Jones another year, but an NFC team wouldn't. What a mess.
Starting point is 00:11:51 And I've got to say, Devon Weatherspoon, the rookie for Seattle, for years and years, pivot back to Seattle, for years and years, Pete Carroll went from college to the pros, and for three to four straight years, own the draft, because he had recruited so many of those players.
Starting point is 00:12:06 He had such an advantage on personnel. You know, Belichick's a pro football guy. He's not watching college football on Saturdays, and you can see it in the draft. Pete Carroll came out of college, these college coaches that go to the NFL first three or four years, they have this institutional advantage, right? Like of all this high school college personnel, you know, they watch these kids, they watch them in high school, they watch them in college.
Starting point is 00:12:31 They can find fifth and six round guys that they know can play that they recruited. And then Pete, I thought, got too much power in Seattle after the Super Bowls. It frustrated John Snyder, who interviewed with the Detroit Lions. Paul Allen passed away. There was a little bit of a vacuum, a power grab, and Pete had it because he had the ring and the experience and the charisma and the brand. And so Pete had a little too much power. So John Snyder says, I'm going to go to Detroit, run it, and have some more power.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Finally, they came to terms. John signed a new deal and has more power now in the draft, and they have crushed back-to-back drafts, crushed them. And that's not a knock on Pete. you know, Belichick's got too much power. Andy reads one of those guys that could have power and gives Brett Veach the room. He's not interested in it, right? Like, but a lot of coaches, they want to stay in the draft.
Starting point is 00:13:24 And I get it. You know, Bill Parcells, if I have to make dinner, I want to be able to shop for groceries. So I think Seattle's really got it figured out. You know, you've got the great coach, Pete Carroll, with younger players. John Snyder now has more control and say in the draft, and it all works out. So Devon Wither Spoon had a night. He's the corner from Illinois. there was two great corners in the draft.
Starting point is 00:13:46 The other was Christian Gonzalez to the Patriots, who's tremendous. He's a bigger, stronger, I think. Well, he's bigger. He got hurt yesterday and the Patriots defense folded. So you've got to feel good about where Seattle is at. Two good backs now. Walker and the kid from UCLA, pass rush pretty good today, pretty lively tonight. The Giants, I know you think I'm crazy suggesting Brian Dable resign
Starting point is 00:14:13 and just say, anybody willing to give picks up? I think plenty would. Dable's reputation is great. I feel bad for the guy. I mean, when he goes to the sidelines and visibly shows his frustration with Daniel Jones, he knows that's on TV. It's New York. He knows that. That's how frustrated he was with Daniel Jones. A reach at number six. Contract was a reach. And here you are. It's a bummer. It really is. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I thought Jason McIntyre and I argued, I thought that like Josh Allen, a second year with Brian Dable, Daniel Jones, you know, he only had 15 touchdowns last year, but he
Starting point is 00:18:03 only had a handful of picks. his passer rating went up, his completion percentage. I thought, okay, he'll make another leap this year. I didn't think he was Josh Allen. But two years with Brian Daible. I mean, if you go look at most quarterbacks, like Matt Ryan got Kyle Shanahan. Like a lot of times, it's the second year they really connect.
Starting point is 00:18:24 But instead, you know, boom, he hit a ceiling. This is what Daniel Jones is. There is nowhere else to go. And I think Davele knows it. You know, it's Daniel Jones. Jones, maybe a little vanilla ice. You know, it's a not a one-hit wonder, but
Starting point is 00:18:40 maybe a one-album wonder. Did vanilla have three or four albums that crushed? I don't think he did. So, you know, I thought the Giants could battle for a playoff spot. I don't think I had him in the playoffs. In the NFC, I had Philly, Dallas,
Starting point is 00:18:57 St. Atlanta, San Francisco, Seattle, and the Lions. And that's where we are today. Atlanta's looking bad. Whole division, NFC South is. All right. Instant reaction on a Monday. For the record,
Starting point is 00:19:13 my eyes get a little red as the night goes on, and I don't have any Vizine in the house. So a lot of you guys make these comments. You think I'm out there, you know, with Spleaf, Mary Jane.
