Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Volume. It's the Colin Coward podcast presented by Fandul. Football seasons here.

Starting point is 00:00:59 Same game parlay is my favorite. Just use the promo code Colin and download the Fandul app today. All right, here's my take before we get to Sharpen Square, our bets of the week with Chad Millman. Let's start with a TWA injury. Good news, he's flying back with the team. Obviously, there's going to be the NFL Players Association's not happy. It looks bad. Stand-alone game.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Only four days off for Tua to recover from a situation. where he got up and wobbled, really serious. It looked like injury being slammed to the turf. One of the things I first thought when he got slammed to the turf, it was very obvious immediately he had to be taken out of the game. And it was a serious medical issue is about two or three times a year. And I'm just throwing that number out. During a game, I'll see a player get up and I'll watch him wobble.
Starting point is 00:02:06 And, you know, to eliminate the doubt and the questions, why not have something called like a wobble rule? If you get up at any point on the field, indecisive, struggle with balance, you're out the next week. You're out. You know, now a team could manipulate that, keep players on the field, you know, tell the players never get up. But I see this too often, fairly regularly, that you see players get up like Tua last week against Buffalo. And he's, you know, he's got an issue above the shoulders. Now, the dolphins say it's a back issue or it's some other issue. They don't, right now, their owner is suspended.
Starting point is 00:02:51 So within that organization, who makes that call? Is it the GM? Is it the head coach? Is it Tua? Players generally fight to play. especially quarterbacks because they don't get hit like other players. They get protected at practice. So quarterbacks, you know, they want buy-in from players.
Starting point is 00:03:12 They're Justin Herbert. He's going to want to play. You saw him last week. He was in complete pain in the very first quarter for the charges against the Jags. He's trying to make a point. I'm tough too. I can take the pain too. I know you guys are in collisions constantly.
Starting point is 00:03:27 So the player generally has to be saved from himself. And so the wobble rule put it into effect. Tua is flying back with the team. He is a smaller athlete. He hurt a lot at Bama, hurt a little bit in Miami. Now this, he's also not only a smaller athlete, but he's fairly stationary. You know, a lot of the smaller quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:03:49 who have had success in the NFL, Russell Wilson, Fran Tarkington when I grew up, Kyler Murray, they move around. Michael Vick. They can avoid hits. Also sometimes run into him. But, you know, Tua is kind of your classic pocket passer. He was a Drew Breeze cop coming out of college. Sit in the pocket, very accurate,
Starting point is 00:04:07 get rid of it quit, not a great deep ball thrower, not hyper athletic. And that's a lot of what he is. He's a very, very accurate thrower. But he is a smaller athlete and a stationary target. And, I mean, you saw the violence in which he was slammed to the turf. So good news, he's flying back with the team. But I think we have to create safety really does matter in the NFL. I mean, everybody's playing hurt to some degree. but I do think there needs to be some sort of absolute, a definitive rule. You get up, you wobble, you're out next game,
Starting point is 00:04:41 regardless of when that next game is. Let's talk about the football game. I said I felt Cincinnati would win because I thought the Miami defense, which was on the field for 90 snaps in that South Miami heat against Buffalo, would run out of gas in the second half. And I think as you watched, you could see.
Starting point is 00:04:58 It was a very good defensive effort by the Dolphins in the first half. Very feisty, very twitchy. I thought they'd run out of gas. They just kind of, you know, there was those big plays over the top, which Cincinnati could not engineer in the first half. They got several in the fourth quarter over the top. That's just corners that are exhausted. That's too much time on the field. I thought, you know, Cincinnati, here's something to remember. So, and I'm going to defend Cincinnati, not just because Joe Burroughs on this podcast with a volume. First week, they gave up seven sacks. Second week, six sacks.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Third week, two sacks. Tonight, one sack. New offensive line takes them a while to gel as a unit. I think they've mostly, mostly solve their offensive line issues. You're not going to confuse it with the Dallas Cowboys, you know, six, seven years ago, or whenever Dak came into the league or the mid-70 Steelers. You're not going to confuse it for that. or the hogs in D.C.
Starting point is 00:05:59 But I think it's a competent offensive line, not particularly great at center. Guards, they've upgraded. Tackles are, I think, fine. But seven sacks, six sacks, fewer sacks, one sack. I think they've largely solved that, especially in the second half for a gas defense for the dolphins. A lot of time.
Starting point is 00:06:18 This is an offense in Cincinnati that needs to hit on big plays. When did they separate in this game, fourth quarter? Why did they separate in the, in the fourth quarter. Over the top, big explosion plays. That's what they are. That's what Joe Burrow is. He's going to throw some picks. He's got a little Matt Stafford. He's going to be at times a little reckless. He's going to let it rip. He's going to throw some picks. He's going to make mistakes. But he is going to burn you and take big swings over the top. The realization of what happened in the game, kind of what we thought would happen. I don't think Teddy Bridgewater is one of the top, what, four or five backups in the NFL. He and Tua actually,
Starting point is 00:06:57 kind of athletically, stylistically, two is a little better, kind of the same guy. Sit in the pocket, not great deep throwers, don't push the ball down the field particularly well, not going to move around a lot, but smart guys, get the game, get the offense, good at the line of scrimmage, super accurate, get rid of it quick.
Starting point is 00:07:17 But the team that I think now is going to surge here for the next couple of months is going to be the Cincinnati Bengals. I think they'll only get better. Remember Joe Burrow didn't take practice because of the surgery. he didn't play in the preseason. There are two losses now.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Overtime, overtime. This is a real good football team. But Miami deserves a lot of credit outside of their medical staff. Very, very good effort on a short week. Cross your fingers. Prayers for Tua. He's flying back with a team. And I think we would all agree at this point.
Starting point is 00:07:48 He needs to worry about his health first. Sit out a couple of weeks. Teddy Bridgewater takes control. That feels like an obvious. one for me and probably you. So that's it. Let's go to Chad Millman, Action Network, the C, C, C, O, we're doing Sharp and Square.
Starting point is 00:08:06 2000, 2008, 2022. When it comes to the economy, those are some scary years. Dot-com crash, housing crash, and the roller coaster we're going through right now. One thing is certain, it's a dangerous time to not know your numbers.

Starting point is 00:09:03 What are you waiting for right now? One of a kind, flexible financing program. Go to netsuite.com slash cowherd. NetSuite.com slash cowherd. Slash cowherd. That's me. NetSuite. Time for another edition of Sharp or Square with the CCO of the Action Network.
Starting point is 00:09:27 That work, Chad Millman, host the favorites. You see them on the Cowherd podcast feed. All of our odds provided by a fan duel. Okay, I went two and three. Damn Julio Jones late scratch. Jesus. All right, here we go. Cowboys went on Monday night,
Starting point is 00:09:45 standalone game overvalued. Dallas is only averaging 15 and a half points of offense a game. Washington humiliated. Philadelphia is just really good. I'm taking the points commanders plus three, sharper square. Dude, that is, the commanders as a side, 100% sharp. You're nailing it. And you're nailing it for all the reasons that the wise guys would say bet the commanders, right?
Starting point is 00:10:16 Dallas wins a dramatic game in prime time. Dallas is always inflated as it is, right? So there's going to be a little bit more value on betting, whoever they play in the next week, especially if the commanders in that next week, in the week before, got blown out by a team and a lot of people thought the commanders maybe could cover in that game. So you're 100% on the right team. The challenge here, and this is a nuanced thing and as a better and all the time because you're a very popular guy, there's new people listening to this podcast who may not be regular
Starting point is 00:10:51 betters. There's something called getting the best of the number. and you have to decide as a better as you are deciding now, where is the value? And so, yes, the commanders are still the right side, but this game was at five and a half. So you're not getting the best of the number anymore. So you kind of got to make your personal choice. Do you still believe that it's the right side, even though you're getting it at three? All right.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Patriots plus nine and a half. Again, odds provided by a fan duel. Mack Jones will play. High ankle sprain doesn't hurt him much. because he doesn't move anyway. The reality of this is the Packers have scored one touchdown in the second half all year. Why? Because Aaron Rogers, once he's off scripted plays to his young receivers, doesn't trust them.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Once again last week, touchdown drive, touchdown drive. They fumble, he loses trust, he packs it in. Nine and a half points, it'll be low scoring, way too much Patriot Sharper Square. Oh my God, Colin. You just hit all the key phrases that every professional better is thinking about in this game. The number is too high. Aaron Rogers' offense is not what it seems just because they beat on the bucks. It's not that pretty.
Starting point is 00:12:07 They're not playing that well. It's going to be a low-scoring game in which the Patriots will try to control the ball, keep it out of Aaron Rogers' hands. A low-scoring game and a high spread. are two things that if you're going to correlate them, you tie it to the underdog that is getting a lot of the points. This is a big pros Joe's game, meaning the pros are putting their money on the Patriots and the Joe's, the betters, the average bettors, the square bettors, they're putting their money on the Packers, 100% sharp, Colin Cowherd.
Starting point is 00:12:45 All right, Cardinals getting plus one and a half against Carolina. It's a much better roster. Arizona is fairly desperate to quiet the critics. They need a W. Or like badly. I don't like Carolina. I feel like it's a pick-em. They don't have much of a home field advantage. I'm going to roll here.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Desperate in a good division for a win. Carolina's still rebuilding. Limitations. McCaffrey's health. I'm going to take Arizona plus the point sharper square. Well, look, it's sharp only in so much as if you're going to have to make a plan this game, you're going to play Arizona. In a battle of two coaches that have probably the least respect of any coaches in the NFL from a wise guy point of view, Matt Rule probably has a little
Starting point is 00:13:32 bit less respect than Cliff Kingsbury. If you're going to bet the Cardinals, you want to bet them before it gets into October and November when every coach is out strategized and out scheme Cliff Kingsbury and he hasn't figured out how to make any changes. They do have the better athletes. I was big on Baker going into the year. I thought this Carolina team could outperform expectations. He's been worse than he ever was in Cleveland. And I will say this. I completely agree with you about the fan base in Charlotte.
Starting point is 00:14:02 I've got this theory. People hate me for it. Fan bases in Charlotte. Fan bases in Jacksonville. Fan bases in the AFC and NFC South teams, for the most part. There's no passion there. Like, I watched a lot of that Carolina game this past weekend, and I might as well have been watching a Royals Tigers midday game because it was so quiet, right? So I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:14:25 There is no home field advantage there. It's sharp, but I don't know why you'd want to bet it. All right. Well, you know. There's better. To me, there's so many better options on the board. Okay, I'll throw this one out. So basically, the Chiefs had a special team's meltdown.
Starting point is 00:14:43 extra points, field goals, it was a complete meltdown. The Colts can't score. I'm not giving up three and a half points to anybody. It's an indivision rivalry game and the Titans are totally desperate. I'm taking the three and a half. I'm taking Tennessee against the Colts, sharper square. That's square. Now, the wise guys, this is another one.
Starting point is 00:15:02 This is a corner TV game. And meaning this is the one the bookmakers are going to put on in the corner because they know they got to put it up because there's going to be five people to bet it. But no one really wants to pay attention to it. The Colts have probably one of the best rush defenses in the NFL right now. In fact, statistically, they're giving up the fewest yards per carry on the ground, 2.6 yards per carry on the ground. The Titans, when they are a one-dimensional passing team, that is a recipe for disaster.
Starting point is 00:15:34 And right now, they're a one-dimensional passing team without any real proven weapons on the edges for Ryan Tannahill. Meanwhile, the Titans defense, 31st in allowing explosive plays. They are last in the running game, last in the NFL in yards per carry. So the Colts all of a sudden, they're at home feeling a little bit better, getting a little bit better sense of what their scheme can be. Jonathan Taylor unleashed against the worst rushing defense in the NFL. And oh, by the way, the Colts may get Shack Leonard bat.
Starting point is 00:16:08 They're playing great defense without their best defensive player. The wise guys are on the Colts here at minus three. Okay. So I don't want to take all underdogs because that looks like I'm just playing to just underdogs. I've got one more underdog I like. Rams plus the points, one and a half at San Francisco. Trent Williams is out. Jimmy Garoppolo is a timing thrower.
Starting point is 00:16:37 This means they're going to have to keep. Keep George Kiddell in to block a lot. Takes away a weapon. They've already got Jalen Ramsey. He'll take away Brandon Ayuk or Debo. Match him up singularly. Troy Hill, by the way, statistically, PFF is having a monster year. So they have two really good corners that match up.
Starting point is 00:16:59 It's one of the few games McVeigh doesn't have a coaching advantage. But I'm sorry. I don't think home field matters here. It's in division. They play a lot. I'm taking the points. I think the Trent Williams injury is a huge issue for them. It forces them to keep Kittle in, makes them much less dynamic.
Starting point is 00:17:18 I'm going to take the Rams plus the point, sharper square. So the Rams opened at two and a half, two and a half point underdogs. The wise guys liked it at two and a half. The number has come down to one and a half. This to me, and this from a wise guy point of view, you have a lot of challenges because you've lost the best the number and Kyle Shanahan, for all of his
Starting point is 00:17:42 faults of which he is proving to have many in certain situations, he dominates the Rams, right? Other than that that NFL game last year, he's generally, that playoff game last year, he's generally dominated the Rams. So I think
Starting point is 00:17:58 it's an interesting coaching matchup because I do think Shanahan has proven that he can do the right things against McVeigh's schemes. I'm waffling here because there is no consensus. I get this number right now. The wise guys don't have a strong opinion one way or the other.
Starting point is 00:18:16 This week's gold medal performance goes to a young star who is quickly climbing up the quarterback rankings. I always say first impressions are powerful, right? That's an old cliche, right? But the Eagles are bucking that trend. We thought Jalen Hertz was too small and inaccurate. We thought Nick Seriani initially was a joke way over his head, but Hertz has put in the work clearly, runs, throws, moves with the best of them.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Philly today looks like the best team in the NFC. This week's gold medal performance sponsored by Legacy Precious Metals. The stock market's been plummeting. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Here's my favorite pick. Anybody seen Jared Goff's numbers at home? They're like, fantastic. And Seattle is... Bad on third down, bad throwing, two rookie tackles that are having, you know, classic rookie tackle issues. Detroit scores a lot of points, a lot more at home. Gough's getting unbelievable protection. Amar on St. Brown's banged up, didn't practice.
Starting point is 00:21:56 But at four and a half, I'd swallow it. I think they win by a touchdown or more. I think Seattle played a great half of football against Denver. They haven't done anything since. I like Detroit to win in cover. So interesting you're talking about this game. So as you mentioned, I host the favorites on the Volume Podcast Network. On Thursdays, we do a segment called Sharp Calls,
Starting point is 00:22:23 in which professional betters react to the conversations my co-host and I had on Tuesday. Why don't you ever mention his name? He's very talented. I mention him all the time. Simon Hunter. He's amazing. It seems like you always gloss over his name. I'm not trying to start anything.
Starting point is 00:22:37 you just gloss over it. Really? Well, yeah. I mean, if I said constantly my wife and never mentioned Ann, I'd be like, that's suspicious. They're having problems. No, I love Simon. I mentioned it. Dude, I made Simon a co-host of the podcast.
Starting point is 00:22:53 We added his picture. Now you're getting very defensive. There's something going on. Are you guys struggling? I'm such a dick. Oh, my God. You're so annoying. Me and some of the guy I do the podcast with.
Starting point is 00:23:07 We get these calls from professional betters. And the one game that they kept telling us we weren't talking enough about was the Seahawks and the Lions. Who do they like? They love the Seahawks. And I was like, I was like, really? They love the Seahawks. They love the Seahawks down to three and a half. The game was at four and a half.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I'm as shocked as you are. So I think there's some analysis. about Gino Smith that is being overlooked, that he's playing just much better than people expected. I think that, you know, you're not going to often get running backs who have an impact on a team's power rating and on a point spread. But I do think with DeAndre Swift being out, he's the playmaker on that team. Amman Ross St. Brown is great. And he's the guy that they can go to to keep drives going. But DeAndre Swift breaks open huge plays and sort of tilts the game for them in a different way. So I think they're counting on that. And then,
Starting point is 00:24:07 this defense is terrible. And so it's going to be hard for them to stop anybody. And I think that with the combination of Gino Smith playing better than they thought, the wise guys are betting the Seahawks right now. I'm not going to bet this game, I don't think. Talk me into it. Raiders minus two and a half. So the number's telling you bet the Raiders. But here's my problem. And I do think they've lost three close games. Derek Carr's been fine. They've lost very close competitive games. But what worries me about the Broncos is that in that last series against San Francisco, a great defense. Russell's like, okay, I'm just going to take the offense over. I've been deferential to you.
Starting point is 00:24:51 My gut says that last drive is Russell saying, listen, I try to be a good soldier. I've got to win games. And I think that's the offense we're going to see from Denver now going forward. That's my feeling. So I like Denver. Am I wrong plus points? Denver, Denver plus two and a half is the spot here. And I agree with you 100%. You know, look, you and I, before the season began, we both loved Russell on the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:25:20 We think this defense is amazing. It's proven to be amazing. I don't think we realized how over his head Nathaniel Hackett would be to start the year. Yeah. And I am not a guy who says, oh, well, he sucks in the beginning. so he's not going to be able to grow into it. Everybody has their opportunity to do that. But I do think that what you saw at the end of that game was Russell Wilson being Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:25:43 And against a Raiders team that just feels like it's in disarray right now, you're having team meetings three weeks into it, man. That's a different conversation. So, yeah, I like the Broncos here at plus two and a half. All right. Finally, Sharper Square, there's a game that you like and want to talk about. I haven't discussed, Chad Millman. I really hope, I do hope you and sign.
Starting point is 00:26:03 or Simon can patch it up because I really like the synergy in the relationship. So work on it. Go on a retreat or something. All right. What's your game? Listen, me too. And I'll definitely relate to him that you're concerned about everything. And your best wishes.
Starting point is 00:26:22 You come on the show and we've loved having you. And I know you guys have gotten to know each other. So I'm excited about that. Not really. I'm totally jealous. But here's what I love. A couple games this week. Jags plus six and a half at the Eagles.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Boy, their defense up front. They got first round linebackers everywhere. People are, I mean, Trevor Lawrence has been great, but they're front seven. That's top five in the league. It is good. So you look at it from a personnel perspective. I'm looking at it from a market perspective,
Starting point is 00:26:53 which is the bookmakers have not adjusted to how good the Jaguars are yet. It normally takes bookmakers, I've talked about this with a lot of bookmakers. It takes them about a month before they can truly adjust their power ratings. You can't look at a team in week one or week two and say, oh, my God, this team is better than I thought and adjust their power ratings three or four points. Like, you have to gradually do it.
Starting point is 00:27:18 You know, it's like taking yourself off some kind of drug, right? Like, you've got to slowly detox. The market was already overvaluing the Eagles. They are the team that everybody loves in the NFC. So this client opened at seven. It moved down to six and a half. You look at Fandwell right now. The Jags are still plus 225 to win the AFC South.
Starting point is 00:27:38 They're leading the division. The Colts are plus 100. Like the Jags aren't even shortest in their division. The market is just not catching up from my perspective to how good this Jags team can be and how good they can be offensively. So I love the Jags this week. And there's another one. Well, there's two other ones.
Starting point is 00:27:54 If you'll indulge me. The Texans plus five at home. against the Chargers. I am always going to look to bet a home underdog, a home underdog of more than a field goal historically will pay out, a home underdog in which every game they've played, they've been competitive, and I'm getting a visiting team that has lost their left tackle in Rishon Slater. They've lost their defensive end in Joey Bosa. Their playmaking quarterback is playing with four broken ribs. It's not like he's that much better this week, right?
Starting point is 00:28:34 Those things take many, many weeks to heal. So to me, how am I not betting a decent-sized home underdog in this game? So those are two that I'm thinking about. I'm surprised you didn't bring either of those up. Well, the Jags I have circled, I thought about it. Philadelphia at home, you talk about Jacksonville has an impassionate crowd dis-passionate crowd. Philadelphia at home is a handful. It's like a college crowd. It's a lot. And I think there are, Jalen Hertz, Greg Cosell told me today, he's like, he's just got
Starting point is 00:29:10 time to throw. It's a clean pocket. Every drop. Everything's clean. It's hard to stop. Quarterbacks who feel no pressure on almost no snaps. So now the question is, do they create pressure? Which, I'm telling you, the D-line of Jacksonville and the O line of Philly, maybe the best, it match up all week. Like it's going to be unbelievable. All right. Good stuff. That was very, very strong.
Starting point is 00:29:38 The sharper square is really coming into its own. People are starting to talk about it. I like that. That's why is it grows in popularity. And you know, you and Simon may have a little skirmish. I don't want any jealousy as the numbers start to spike on this thing. Because we're all one big family.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Then if I think what can really bring us all together is, is if me, you, Simon, Kim Kardashian, whoever paid for your dinner. I sat next to her. Like, she, first of all, she happily married. She's a stunning woman, which is obvious. But when you see her in person, she's beautiful. And she has almost metallic hair. It's like silver.
Starting point is 00:30:21 So it's very, wow. She's really, really genuinely one of those one percenters, not even a one percenter. 1% on 1% are like startlingly beautiful. And did she notice you took a picture of her? No. I did it very casually like I was taking a picture of the check. And then the last second I just moved the camera up and back down. Because I mean, her life is a series of weirdos, right?
Starting point is 00:30:49 What is it like, do you ever notice if someone's taking a picture of you? Law enforcement. Naturally. But those are the shots you post for. People come up to me and say the exact same thing every time. Heard. Love the show. It's the exact same thing every day and all day.
Starting point is 00:31:15 It's, you know, it feels good. But they don't take your picture. They don't surreptitiously take your picture the way you do of Kim Kardashian. No, nobody's really interested in being connected to me visually. That's not something. Nobody's hoping for that. You've got L.A. L.A. The L.A. audience, remember, people in L.A. are casual and cool. You know, if I, if I lived in Columbus, Ohio, they'd swear at you and do dumb stuff. But, like, L.A. is always like, hey. You know, like, I'm the 13th level of stardom in L.A. There's like movie stars, TV stars, soap opera stars, sports stars. You know, I'm like the 13th level. So I'm like, you know, nobody cares. That's one of the things I like, you have metallic hair. really shiny metal hair.
Starting point is 00:31:59 But it's amazing. Not that I was awestruck. I don't really care. I saw Jamie Fox once in person. He came up. That was kind of cool. I don't really care. But I got to be honest, when she walked in, I kind of stared.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I wasn't in awe or anything, but I did stare. She's very, you know, there are certain people you just stare at. Like if Shaq walked into a room, you'd stare at Shaq. Kim Kardashian, you kind of, you know, the whole on. entourage, the hair. She's like a superstar. I've been in the presence, take out sports. I've been in the presence of Jamie Fox and Kim Kardashian.
Starting point is 00:32:38 That's it in my life. And you can sense it. You can feel it, right? That's how I feel when I go out in West Harford. It happened to me last night when I went to Bartako. Who'd you run into? Frank. The question was people walking away saying, I ran in Chad Millman.
