Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Volume. Starting point is 00:02:04 completely thrashing the Patriots at Foxborough. Number one. for years and years, 20 years, there's been one or two things that are almost always true. One of those being in the NFL, the NFL is a league in which half the teams that make the playoffs don't make it the next year. Almost a quarter of the coaches are replaced every year. There'll be a team or two that doubles their wins. So this is a league, unlike baseball where you can buy wins or the NBA. where you have to have a collection of two or three elite players,
Starting point is 00:02:44 half the league is made up comprised of players who weren't drafted. But one of the constants in the NFL for the last 20 years is if a young quarterback faces Belichick, he is unraveled very quickly. And Justin Fields, I think, played his best game as a pro. I was watching the Bears and I thought to myself, this is what Belichick has been doing to young quarterbacks for 20 years. Mac Jones, Bailey's Appie, literally flummoxed, disguising coverages, stunts from different places, a lot of adjustments, great halftime adjustments.
Starting point is 00:03:36 I mean, Bailey's Appie, first half, Bailey's app, second half, two different players. So it's like the Bears did a Belichick on Belichick. As I watched that game, I thought to myself, can you imagine being a sports talk radio host in Chicago tomorrow? I mean, if you think about this organization, the Bears, that we don't know if they have the right coach, the right quarterback, the O line. this literally changes expectations for everything. For Iber Flus, for Justin Fields, for the team. If you can be this good against Belichick, nobody thinks New England's a great team. But they were a playoff team, right?
Starting point is 00:04:27 You go on the air tomorrow in Chicago. Is this the new Bears? I went and looked at the Bears' schedule and all those games. games that look like losses, I'm like, I don't know, I think they beat Dallas. Outside of the Buffalo game, I'm like, no, I think, well, the Jets, they can certainly beat the Jets. Right now, Fields is better than Zach Wilson. I started talking myself into Bayer wins. That is a literally, it changes the bar on Justin Fields.
Starting point is 00:04:53 I mean, what was that? Is that what he is? Because no young quarterback does that against Belichick except Josh Allen. And even Josh Allen, I think, went, oh, for his first floor against Belichick. I mean, that game, you know, they always say happiness is based on expectations. That's why the game was so good tonight for like two and a half hours, because our expectations were so low. We thought this was going to be just such an awful, low-scoring game. And the first half was complete drama.
Starting point is 00:05:22 We had quarterback drama. We had touchdowns. Was it a great first half? Well, based on expectations, it was fantastic. But I'm taken back. I had huge reservations about Matt Iverflus and I said when he got hired I said Robert Sala and Matt Iberflus okay you have young quarterbacks you're going to give them defensive coaches and bad offensive lines I mean this isn't going to work and both Sala and Iber Fluse have really got this thing humming I thought Sala had a choppy first year but I all phases tonight in every single phase. The Chicago Bears outcoached the New England Patriots. Every phase. Special teams, defense, Justin Fields. It was just head spinning to watch. So that's my first takeaway.
Starting point is 00:06:18 That what do we do with Chicago now? Is this what we should expect? You know, you ever had one of those days? I can remember having these in college. You know, you wake up Saturday morning. You're on a college campus it's crisp weather you met a girl on friday night at some you know party you wake up you're in a great mood saturday there's a home football game to go to you don't have to do any studying there's a party that night and you're like oh my god you just it's just you feel like this is the greatest day you're like 20 years old it's like met a girl going to party tonight college football today i don't have any homework you know you're finally out of the house of your parents you're going to do what you want to do you can just sit and you know eat snacks all day
Starting point is 00:07:01 it's like, oh, life doesn't get any better than this. And as I can say in my 50s, it sadly doesn't. But the point being is, you watch the bears and it's like, what the hell? Is this what they are now? What am I supposed to do with this performance? What do I do? This is what I get with the bears? So it blows your mind.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Okay, let me switch over to New England. Bill Belichick, the way they treated Mac Jones. So I was a believer, just keep going with Bailey Zappy until you lose. No. Belichick's like, I'm going to go with Mac Jones. And then after a bad series, I'm going to replace him with Bailey Zappy. Well, why wouldn't you just stick with Zappy? I mean, if the string was going to be that short, I mean, if the hook was going to be that quick,
Starting point is 00:07:51 why don't you just stay with Bailey Zappy? And I thought when they pulled out Mac Jones, I thought, this is what you would do with your quarterback. That's what people who call sports talk radio shows. That's how they would coach. Belichick literally became a sports talk radio caller. Bad throw, pull him back up in. You're like, what?
Starting point is 00:08:16 Why didn't you just start Bailey Zappy? I mean, if the hook was that quick, what are you doing to your young quarterback's? ego. I mean, it's fragile at this point. And then you got the crowd, you know, chanting Bailey zappy, Bailey zappy, and you can just see the body language of Mack Jones. It's like, oh, yoy, that's how you ruin a kid. So I, New England's confounding. I don't get, they don't have an offensive coordinator. They don't have any speed. How they've treated Mac Jones? what I watch tonight, it's just hard.
Starting point is 00:09:01 It's hard to wrap your brain around it, right? It's just, they have no elegance or no sensibility of offense. It's just clunky. They don't draft it well. They don't develop it well. They don't really know how to treat the quarterback. I mean, just ask yourself, why would you start Mac Jones if you were going to pull him after that. Just go with Zappi. And if he stinks, all right, it's an L. Next game, Mac Jones.
Starting point is 00:09:37 It's just, when you watch somebody and they're great forever, like an athlete, you watch an athlete, and he's great, right? He's ascending. He's young. He's talented. He's flawed. Then he gets great. He's in his peak. And then he gradually, gradually, you know, ages, like a Brady. But you watch Belichick. It's like best coach ever. What the hell's going on? I mean, it's like if he was an athlete, he'd go from a 98 mile an hour splitter to he can't spot the fastball and can't get it past 88 miles an hour in like four starts. How do you go from what we watched, which was the perception that he was the greatest coach ever? You never went into a game as a Patriot fan and thought you were the second best coach.
Starting point is 00:10:23 You just worked in a touchdown because of coaching. I mean, even against good coach. coaches. Andy Reed, Tony Dungee, Tomlin, you'd be like, Pete Carroll, oh, we have the better coach. And you'd see it. I don't, it's like the league pivoted to offense. Bill's got his kids on the staff. He lost Brady, Josh McDaniels. He doesn't have a great sensibility with offense. I just, all of it's bad. Belichick got Bella checked tonight. That's what I, that's what I saw. for three hours. I mean, God, they just played a basic zone.
Starting point is 00:11:02 I mean, they didn't make it hard on Justin Fields at all. Weird, weird night. You know, I love being a syndicated radio host on Premier Radio and FS1. I love what I do. But there are days, half dozen a year. I would love to be a Chicago radio host tomorrow. and just take the calls and just take calls for hours and listen to fans. That is a bar-changing performance by Justin Fields and Matt Eberfluse.
Starting point is 00:11:39 I was a cynic going in. Young quarterback defensive coach. I don't get it. I mean, you can't even name the best receiver in Chicago Bears history. They don't even understand offense. But good hell. What a performance. Maybe if that was a one o'clock game on a Sunday,
Starting point is 00:11:55 none of us talk about it, none of us see it. But for a standalone game, I'm just like, okay, don't overreact. Don't go crazy here. But I just can't, I can't wrap my brain around what I watched. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I want to do mid-afternoons on the score in Chicago. I don't even know if there is a score in Chicago, but I want to be on it tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:12:19 All right, we'll see you on Fox. We'll hear you on the radio. Instant reaction. See you tomorrow. Football season's underway.
