Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

What's up, guys?
This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth.
And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better.
What?
Hey, Miss Parker.
Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app,

And I'm C.J. Toledano.
It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs.
We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season.
And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments.
If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed.
You just understood.
That's how personal it got.
Wow.
Then after that game seven, Marquis come until he's like, you know I love you, dog.
You know, it's all love.
This was just playoffs.
This was just basketball.

We're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Oh, it is a Friday.
We are packed.
We got fireworks down in Dallas.
The owner's swearing it, people.
This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
We're live in L.A. on IHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1, one hour from now are
blazing five.
The pressure is on me.
I've never been below 500 ever for an entire season.
I'm at 51%
I'm all fired up.
Joy Taylor is joining me off that
debacle last night.
If you're a cowboy fan,
it was great if you're a Bears fan, Joy.
I mean, Bears fans should
really feel good right now.
Great.
Good or very confused.
That division's got Green Bay
in Minnesota and the bears have a
fight in them.
It just wasn't any good for the Cowboys.
So let's start with this.
Joy, there is a separation
globally, but certainly
in America, between those
who embrace tech and those who don't.
If you do not embrace tech, you will make less money, have less options.
There'll be an intellectual separation away from you, a productivity separation, a financial
separation away from you.
Tech equals speed.
As the world gets faster, you better embrace it or you'll die.
There is a massive gap in America between those who are willing to embrace tech and stay on
the speed train and those who are willing to embrace tech and stay on the speed train and those
who are rigid,
stubborn,
won't.
They're falling behind.
And the gap between those,
it's not just a money gap.
It's those that embrace tech
and those who don't.
Cities that don't,
towns that don't,
people that don't fall behind
because the world's never been faster.
This is also what's happening
in my opinion in football.
Because when any business speeds up,
the haves and have-nots
is more obvious to see.
Fastball, a football,
has never been faster.
We used to have 50 plays.
Now they're 70 per team.
There's no huddles.
There's less practice time.
Half times are shorter because they have more interviews going in and coming out.
So the separation between the haves and the have-nots in coaching, I've never seen anything like it.
Sean McVeigh and Kyle Shanahan, young guys come into the league, boom, at the top.
Bill Belichick dominates his division.
Andy Reid will for the next 15 years.
Sean Payton is now separating.
Tech is speed, and those who don't embrace it fall behind.
Football's the same thing.
The game has gotten so fast, so demanding for coaches,
you are seeing a huge gap between the halves, Matt Nagy,
a brilliant young coach in Chicago,
and the have-nots Jason Garrett.
Last night's a prime example.
A very limited quarterback, Mitch Trubisky,
with OK weapons, not special,
were not only clever and high functioning,
but then at halftime,
when you have 13 minutes to adjust,
they came out, Chicago did,
with an unbelievable drive after adjusting.
Dallas had one great drive of the game.
It was scripted, and then they were shot.
And once again, Dallas with much better weapons,
last three games, zero points in the third quarter.
Because as we know, the third quarter is the first quarter after halftime.
article we talked about last week, the New England Patriot article with Josh McDaniels talking about
why the Patriots are so great at half because they're so smart, they're so ramped up.
Then in that 13 minutes, New England goes in, has a plan, goes to the board, changes,
alters, adjust, dominates the third quarter.
Every Super Bowl with New England, they never score a touchdown in any Super Bowl in the first
quarter.
You wait for their adjustments at half.
Pete Carroll's adjustments at half.
John Harbaugh's adjustments at half.
Andy Reed adjustments at half.
The Cowboys are awful in the third quarter.
they don't adjust. They're not fast. The world's too fast for this staff. And the staffs that struggle
off the script, Dallas is a terrible adjustment. Half, staff, this is what you end up with. And we're
seeing this all over the world. By the way, we see Andy Reid, we always think quarterbacks run this
league, but Andy Reid had Matt Moore go toe to toe with Aaron Rogers. Sean Payton lost his
starting quarterback, went five and O. Mike Tomlin's on his what, his four-string
quarterback, they're still in the wild card race. Freddie Kitchens has a star Baker-Mayfield.
They're a mess. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is happening in America for those who,
as the world speeds up, embrace tech and ignore it or get stubborn around tech. I don't need that
phone, that iPad, that, yeah, you do. Or a money separation, an intellectual separation,
a productivity separation. This is happening in football. It is the fastest I've ever seen it.
You got 70 plays, let's go, half-time shorter.
less practice, and the McVeys and the Shannahan's and the Harbaugh's and the Andy
Reed and the Belichick and the Matt Nagy, who's really dealing with a below-average functioning
quarterback.
But last night, he takes what Trubisky can do.
He then adjust at half of the drive of the game and the game's over.
And I see a real separation.
And we can keep looking around and blaming the coach and blaming this and blaming that and
blaming the quarterback and blaming the left tackle and blaming Zik,
DAC after the game, he's searching for answers to what's happening to our football team?
Can't put a finger on it. I wish I could right now. If I could, obviously, we wouldn't be in this situation.
We'd be getting over this and out of this slump, but that's the most frustrating part is we have the skill level.
We have the players. We have the chemistry at times. But we're not playing together as a team complimentary enough when we need to.
And we've got to figure out what it is.
Here's what it is. According to Warren Sharp of Sharp football, the last five years,
Alice has won just four games.
They trailed at half.
That's it.
It's a have-not staff, Dak.
I mean, I'm not saying Dax.
Dax's not talented enough to overcome a bad staff.
You know, very few guys in the history of the game are.
The John Elway, the Troy Aikman's, whatever.
Very few quarterbacks can overcome a bad staff.
But that stat says it all, Dack.
Five years.
Four games.
Down at half came back.
The game's fast.
More plays.
adjustments. There's a separation have to have nots and Dallas has a have not staff.
And boy, was that on display last night with a have coach.
All right, let's switch to Dak Prescott entirely here.
He is now, this is kind of scary if you're a cowboy fan.
We've seen this now over the course of a season.
Dak Prescott is only good in two situations.
To start the game with a script, generally with a lot of running support.
And then in garbage time, the cotton.
candy of football. Doesn't fill you up.
Tastes good. Doesn't matter. So he's good on the script and he's good in garbage time.
Now, it should be noted being good on the script does matter.
Because teams that take a lead in the NFL win about 55% of their games.
So that matters. He's good on the script. I'd rather have a quarterback be good on the script.
Joe Montana was great on the script. Troy Aikman was good on the script. So he's good on the script.
And he's really good in garbage time, which doesn't matter at all.
script does, garbage time doesn't.
But the problem being is, last two games, second, third quarter, when you've got to kind of elevate beyond script, 47 nothing been outscored.
Now, Dac has never been a natural thrower, and so he gets out of rhythm very quickly.
I mean, I think we all admit this.
There are guys like Mahomes and Aaron Rogers that are kind of natural throwers.
Matt Ryan just looks easy.
Dack's never been that guy, so he gets out of rhythm very, very quickly.
But it's the problem when evaluating quarterbacks, and this is the hardest position in American sports to evaluate,
because we use things like terms like, that guy's a winner, which is an empty adjective.
When I hear NFL scouts say, that quarterback at Oklahoma, that quarterback at Ohio State, that quarterback at Alabama is a winner.
Of course he is.
Every quarterback at Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Power Five juggernauts is a winner.
It's just empty.
And there's also these stats with DAC.
He's number two in the NFL wins above replacement.
That's like the Mike Trout stat for the best baseball player of all time.
And there's the fact that he's the second winning his quarterback after Brady.
This is why this quarterback is this position is incredibly difficult to evaluate.
Because if it was just about winning, Mark Sanchez won a lot.
Tim Tebow won seven straight.
You got to watch the games.
If you look at the box score last night,
let's say you were just busy,
I just didn't have time to watch the bears and the cowboys.
You'd look at Dak Prescott and see six for 15 on third down,
two for three on fourth down, 27 of 49,
6.5 yards a pass,
no turnovers, did pretty well time of possession.
But he was good in the first drive on script,
and he picked up 60, 70 yards in garbage time.
In the NFL, you want that 38 million large,
year, you got to be good
in that second quarter, you got to be good
at that third quarter. Now, some of it,
I do believe, especially third
quarter, is on this coaching staff.
But DAC now is
two in four
in his six big stack
games this year. It just doesn't matter.
By the way, Lamar Jackson's stats
last week weren't impressive. I thought he was
and they beat the second best team probably in the
NFL San Francisco.
So
this is concerning on DAC.
I've never thought DAC is a natural thrower or can carry average parts.
But Dallas is now going to pay a lot of people, including Dak.
He's going to lose a top receiver, maybe a great right tackle.
And unless they make a change at coach, this could get very ugly because he's now a script guy and a garbage time guy.
And that's pretty much it.
Jerry Jones this morning, of course, that game was on the road last night.
Jerry got in his Gulfstream and flew home.
I'm going to, we'll have it coming up.
Jerry blew a fuse on Dallas radio this morning.
I have not heard this.
I heard it's pretty ugly.
And Jerry's generally very optimistic, very positive.
He was not in a positive mood this morning.
And you'll hear that.
It's pretty dicey, I'm told, coming up.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd.

Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,

It's very good.
Joy Taylor is joining me.
Orlando Scandrick, the former Philadelphia Eagle and Dallas Cowboy, will be joining us here in about 10 minutes.
He's got a lot to say on the Cowboys and the Eagles.
By the way, if the Eagles went out, Joy, they're in the playoffs.
They control their destiny, that's for sure.
Okay, so let's talk about Jerry Jones.
Jerry always talks after games he did last night.
Then he flies home and talks after the game.
So Jerry Jones, because the Cowboys played, he usually talks on Monday on Dallas Radio,
but he's talking on Friday Dallas Radio because the Gulfstream landed.
Probably got home three or four hours.
He was not in the mood to mess around this morning with the local wacky FM guys
that are talking to them are wacky AM radio guys on the Dallas Cowboys Station.
The billionaire Jerry Jones was not in the mood when he went on.
All right, Jerry, you come on every week, win or lose, you answer questions,
you know the tolo's and the Cowboys fans want answers today.
What answer do you have for how this team is playing right now?
We're not playing very well.
Are you embarrassed?
Are you embarrassed as an organization about how the team is playing?
Hey, get your damn act together.
You're set.
Okay?
We're going to have a good visit this morning, but settle down just a little bit.
I mean, as a Cowboys fan, Jerry.
We've got a lot to go over.
Now, I've gone with your question, but I'm going to give you the answers I want to give you this morning.
And I don't like your attitude to come in.
I've been traveling all night, and I don't have the patience to jack with you today.
Embarrassing is what they call a trigger word.
I probably wouldn't use that as a host talking to Jerry Jones, a billionaire.
But be that as it may.
There's another story this morning.
Jane Slater, who's terrific.
She's on our show regularly.
He says Jerry and Jason will remain the coach.
Jason Garrett will remain the coach.
But I can confirm, said Jane Slater, a very real interest in Urban Meyer.
I'm told Stephen Jones spoke with him recently.
You know, it's very funny.
We've talked about this with Dallas.
There is a difference between a great job and a glamour job.
There's two jobs in the country that always stick out to me as glamour jobs.
I don't know if they're great jobs.
The Dallas Cowboys and USC football.
And right now both, to me, have a coach that can't take him to the next level.
The facilities are A-plus.
The legacy, the money's great.
The resources are unbelievable.
The stadium is fantastic.
Oh, that's A-plus, A-plus, A-plus, A-plus.
But the Cowboys owner is the general manager and talks a lot on local radio,
sometimes throwing the staff under the bus.
And by the way, the vice president is the owner's son.
That ain't great.
Dallas and USC football.
You know, they don't win big enough.
They win based on some resources, the attractiveness, the allure, the facility, the money,
no state tax in Dallas.
USC wins and Dallas wins, but they don't win big enough.
Shouldn't with those resources, they both be great all the time?
But in one, the owners, the GM, and his son's number two, and in the other, it's highly political
at a college level at USC.
It's very media-driven with both the allure to take them back to the great rich history of USC.
They were great in the 70s and briefly with Pete Carroll.
Ain't that great.
Alabama's great.
Ohio State's great.
Oklahoma's great.
USC history, not as great as you think.
Dallas Cowboys' Rich History.
Last 20 years, it's a whole bucket of nothing.
It's just a meh.
It's just a nothing burger.
In fact, since 1997, let me read it here.
The Cowboys have won since 1997 three wild card playoff games.
Jerry's vanity and ego and need for power.
Bumrush Bill Parcells a Hall of Famer and Jimmy Johnson should be out of Big D.
Also, Dallas, how great is the job?
How great is the USC job?
That's very political.
Your assistant coaches can't afford to live in Los Angeles.
it's too expensive.
How great is the Dallas Cowboy job?
And now you're going to be cash strapped
because Jerry's going to pay DAC.
They're already paying Zeeke.
They're paying the entire offensive line.
You're going to pay Jalen Smith.
You're going to pay Bandarresh in a year.
You paid DeMarcus Lawrence.
So you're going to be cash strapped.
And how do we know the next coach, Urban Meyer, Lincoln, Riley?
Who ebbs Ron Rivera likes Dak?
Maybe they don't.
They won't have a choice.
Jerry likes him.
There's a big difference between a great job
and a glamour job.
And both are media-driven.
The media insists USC's great.
And they insist the cowboy job is great.
Glamorous.
Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, as you just mentioned,
the Eagles are obviously in the conversation
every time you talk about the Cowboys losing.
They have to be.
Cowboys keep leaving the door open
for the Eagles in the end.
NFC East. Philly has lost all three of their games since they're by, and Doug Peterson
knows it's time to start turning things around right now.
The main message is, listen, we're in a must-win situation. We know that. For me,
it's, I got to stay the course. I got to stay, you know, I got to stay transparent. I
got to stay as honest as I can with the team, the integrity, talk about the character of the team
and all of that with them and say, listen, guys, we're in that must-win situation right now.
So here's the rest of their schedule.
They play Monday nights against the Giants.
Yeah.
They're eight and a half point favorites in that game.
They'll win.
Well, remember, there's a little X factor to that game.
Now, I don't know if it's going to matter or not,
but Daniel Jones is out with an ankle sprain.
So Eli Manning is very likely going to start on Monday.
I know everyone, like, we're out on Eli Manning.
But it just would be so sports godslike for,
Eli Manning to come back and get a big win for the Giants after this run that they've been on.
Certainly would be fun if it happened.
It's just something to think about.
Then they're at the Redskins.
Win.
Then they have the Cowboys.
Win.
And then they're at the Giants.
Win.
So Philadelphia is going to go four and O down the stretch.
Well, if they want to guarantee a playoff spot, they're going to have to do that.
Now, the Cowboys remaining schedule is the Rams at home.
Loss.
And at the Eagles.
Loss.
And then the Redskins.
Win.
I'm on Philadelphia's bandwagon this morning.
You're back on, huh?
Well, no, I got off, but I still had a...
No, you got off.
We remember you're getting off.
But I got off, but I still walked alongside it.
Okay. So you didn't leave, you know, the platform.
That's right, right.
Okay, well, I am not on the Eagles bandwagon.
I don't think they're going to win out.
And I'm, I mean, maybe I'm crazy, but I don't...
There's something about that Monday night, Eli Manning situation.
Well, Andy Dalton came back to the Bengals.
They played their best game of the year, you know, and then so...
I mean, it's a little emotional swing there.
Yeah, there's something.
It's a manning.
It's a last start as a giant.
There's something to do that.
I might take those points with New York.
So O'Dell hasn't been utilized in the way that he probably would have hoped he was when he was traded to the Browns.
Obviously, we're all kind of disappointed in what we've not got to see from O'Dell this year.
But he's under contract with the team through 2023.
So when he was asked about his future in Cleveland, he didn't sound very committed.
No one knows what the future holds like tomorrow.
I couldn't sit here and tell you.
whether I'm going to be here, want to be here, don't want to be here.
This is exactly where I'm at now.
That's a very honest answer.
By the way, he's an athlete.
He can be traded.
He doesn't know where he's going to be a year for now.
Well, it's a very literal answer.
Yes.
Like, yes, none of us know what the future holds.
But nobody's really asking him to tell the future.
From now on, all you athletes watching, if you are asked in a controversial situation,
will you be back?
Just say this.
This is not normal business.
I can be traded.
Why are you asking me?
Go ask the owner and the general manager.
Well, I mean, that's what he said.
Nobody knows what the future holds.
I can't sit here and tell you anything.
It's true.
But look, and I get it.
Reporters ask those questions.
So you can get mad at the reporter if you want to for asking that question.
But I think in the state that the Browns are in and, you know, just kind of the lack of an O'Dell-like season that we've seen from him this year.
Not that he's been bad in any way or responsible for what's going on with the Browns.
But it does feel like we've lost a little bit of that Odell's stardom.
that he had in New York, even when Eli was bad.
He was just relevant, a conversation every single day.
Well, people are kind of taking away from that that he doesn't necessarily want to be with the Browns.
And this morning, he clarified his comments on Twitter saying, okay, with a bunch of emojis, irritated emojis.
I never said I was not happy in Cleveland, just like everyone else.
I'm hopeful for better results.
Period.
Next story, please.
Let me defend Odell Beckham on this.
Let's not overreact to what he said.
No, I don't think anyone should.
No.
There's no right answer you can give in that.
spot. No. Athletes get in these tough spots where we're like, what's your future? And I would just tell
every athlete watching, college or pro, just say, go ask the owner. You can't be traded in a
pharmaceutical business and the media business. You can be traded. These guys don't know where
they're going to be tomorrow. Don't blame the athlete when they don't have an answer. There's no answer.
Because even if he does say that he wants to be here forever and then he ends up asking for a
trade, then he's wrong. Like there's no right answer for O'Dell there. It's just a story because
it's O'Dell. And again, because it does feel like it's lost a little bit.
Finally, Tom Brady was limited in practice yesterday with elbow and toe injuries,
but he's not concerned about missing the game against the Chiefs this weekend
and even made light of his status on the injury report.
That might be the first time my toe's ever been on the injury report.
So, you know, us Patriots, we're pretty diligent about lifting everything.
So I guess we have to make mention of my toe now as well.
All right.
How about your elbow?
Tom versus elbow.
How's the elbow this week?
Isn't there some hip a violation or something like that when I start talking about?
about all my injuries. Well, I'm doing pretty good.
I'm doing pretty good. At this time of the year, I'll take it.
I'll take anything. If I'm still, I would go out there and feel like I can play my best.
So more panic for Patriots fans who are
grossly overreacting to the state of the Patriots right now.
At 42 years old, you're just, as a football player, you don't go into week 14
without something being sore.
Everything, I mean, it's week 14 for a 42-year-old NFL player, a 42-year-old farmer,
A 42-year-old anything, you wake up, something hurts.
No, I don't think this is something to be concerned about.
And obviously, he's making light of it.
And he's never going to exaggerate it anyway.
That's not Tom Brady's style.
But, you know, he's just making a little joke of it.
You really like the Chiefs in this game.
I do.
And I know nobody else believes me.
But I think we look at the Patriots and we just stuck in the rear-view mirror
looking at their greatness.
But we have to look through the windshield.
They are an incredibly limited offense.
Tom knows it.
Belichick knows it.
Everybody knows it.
the owner knows it. That's why Tom's getting so testy. Tom knows. We can't score 27 points.
We have to win this game 23.20. I don't think you can keep this Kansas City team down to 23.
If the weather, as long as it's not a tsunami and the weather's just cold, but if wind's not a factor or visibility, Kansas City's going to...
I know. That streak. 21-game streak. They're three and a half point favorites going to Fox Fett.
I know. I know. I get it. I get it. I like Dallas and New England. I was wrong.
Blazing five top of the hour, 30 minutes away, Joy, with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Ly News.
He played for 11 seasons with the Cowboys and with the Eagles.
We love having him on Orlando Scandrick, joining us on a Friday post-Cowboy debacle.
A free agent cornerback.
Good to have you in Orlando.
Good to see you again.
You were initially drafted by the Cowboys.
Yeah, you sure did me a season, though.
What's that?
You shorted me a season.
Twelve years?
My bad.
No problem.
that wants to Trent Dilfer, never heard the end of it.
All right, let's start with this.
Let's start with my concern about Dak Prescott.
He's very good on the script, opening drive, and in garbage time.
But I am concerned in the second and third quarters when quarterbacks need to kind of put
the team on their shoulders.
I'm not seeing a lot from him.
Should I be concerned or is this a coaching issue?
I think it's scheme deficient.
I think they're not innovative enough.
I don't know.
I watched them last night and I see a lot of 12 personnel, which is one back, two tight-ins.
two receivers and they're just stuck in
2000 and early 2000
football. I mean, then I turn
on the Ravens and I see
you know, Harbaugh and those guys
they put Lamar in every situation
to succeed. They use every strength
that he has and you know, the guys look great
and I think Dak has it like mentally
from a mental capacity to be able to
adapt to whatever scheme. I think, yeah,
he was 13 and 3 as a rookie. You figured the playbook out
fast. And I think
they're not able to run the football right now
and if you look at his best years or his best
games is when they got that rushing game going and when they can have opens up play action it opens up
some single coverage down the field and some easier reads for him it's very interesting his big stat
games this year decks two and four to your point he's better when the stats are down they tend to be
he can throw on play action the running game's working and after the first series last night the
running game disappeared actually i looked at that um zeke rushed for what was it 19 carries
81 yards if you take out 31 yarder it's 18 carries
He's 50 yards, 2.7 yards of carry.
That's not good.
I mean, this is the NFL.
You cannot just line up and just run the same place over and over and over and say,
we're going to do what we do better than they do what they do because that's just not.
I mean, I think that's some of Jerry's frustration.
I don't think he's paying, you know, for coaches to coach.
He's put these people in place to coach.
And, I mean, I think Jason, I think he's a good coach, but I think it's got to the point
where it's like, I don't even think he knows what to do.
I think his job security, I think all the talk of him being fired.
I mean, it's weighing on them.
It'd be weighing on anyone.
He's human.
You know, I think it's weighing on the team.
I think, you know, not only when your coach gets fired, it's like a ripple effect, you know,
assistant coaches get fired.
Players at the bottom of the roster that that was that coach's guys lose their jobs.
And I think it's weighing on them all.
And I think the pressure is becoming unbearable for these guys.
And it just, they're not performing.
It's very interesting you say that.
In your 12 years of playing, and I've asked several people, that's very interesting.
You talk about the bottom end of the players and the assistants.
Were you ever in a locker room?
where there was a sense in week 10, 12, the coaching staff would be fired.
Were you ever?
It was my third year, 2010.
We had won the NFC East the year before that.
We lost the, no, we won a playoff game.
We won a first playoff game, and I think it was 15, 20 years.
We're 1 in 7, we lose.
You're Dallas.
Yeah, we lose.
We just knew, like, Wade was gone.
I mean, and then Jason takes over.
But Wade, like, he was a great coach, but his message,
was just it wasn't getting by.
I mean, it doesn't matter what he said.
We was the same result.
You know, we were trying to do like the same thing over and over expecting a different
result.
And I think Jerry decided to make a decision.
And he promoted Jason.
And here we are now, what it was?
Nine, ten seasons later.
And, I mean, you can see the right on the wall.
I mean, I think Jason knows Jerry well enough to know what's going to happen.
I don't, I think he's coaching on borrowed time right now.
Do you think you can turn it around or is the juice and focus lost for the season in
Dallas's locker room?
I think that they can.
turn it around. I think they can, you know, win two out of the next three to make the playoffs
and to win the NFCEs. But, I mean, when you look at long-term goals and what Jerry aspires for
for his organization for this franchise and is to win Super Bowes, and I just don't think,
I think change is not always bad. I think it's inevitable. I think it's good. I think it will
be good for both sides. And I think culturally, it'll be good. I mean, you got some of these
players in their prime and you don't want them to just adapt to the average culture. And they've been
average, you know, by the standards of NFL. They've been very, very average.
Rich. Obviously, we mostly know who's going to make the playoffs. One of the spots we don't is
Eagles or Cowboys. Now, the Eagles had a secondary cluster issue, a wide receiver cluster issue.
They're three best offensive linemen, multiple times missing games. I could make an argument.
I at least have sympathy for what the Eagles have gone through. We know you love the Eagles,
but I mean, let's just, we can just speak facts. When their quarterback has to be a quarterback and
pass the ball and they can't run it for 200 yards, he struggles. I don't care who he's
throwing to, he struggles. I mean, it starts and it ends with him. I compare this to Jason Garrett.
You know, they say Carson's receivers, they drop a lot of balls and they say Garrett's teams don't
win. I mean, Garrett doesn't call him in plays, but he's the one who shoulders to blame. So when
the Eagles don't win, when they have to get in these games where they need Carson to pass,
he's the one that shoulders to blame. I think I'm going to stand on what I said weeks ago.
I don't even think the Eagles know their deficiencies. I don't think that they
think they're a bad team. To them, they're great.
They're five and seven. The greatest five and seven team that's ever played in the NFL.
I don't really...
You think there's a lot of ego in that room?
I mean, I don't think it's ego. I think that when you win a Super Bowl and you experience success,
I mean, that's success on the highest level of success.
And I think there's still, like, that...
They pull from that, like, all right, in our Super Bowl year, we had this adversity.
And then the next year, we had this adversity.
And I think in this league, you've got to approach things on a week-to-week basis,
because it's definitely a week-to-week league.
Oh, there's no...
Every week there's a game that we cannot figure out and two others that surprise us.
Let's move.
The big game of the weekend.
Let me do one more cowboy question.
Jerry has had a history of hiring college guys, Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson.
You've got Urban and Lincoln Riley.
Do you believe Orlando they would go the college route where they've had real success or Parcell's success as well, Wade not success?
is there a route you think Jerry goes?
I think with his quarterback and his running back,
I think going the college route is a little bit easy.
I think they can relate to the younger players right now.
In Dallas for the young roster?
Yes, I'd be surprised to see Urban.
Lincoln seems like it's more along the Jerry route.
I mean, Jerry wants to win bad,
but he also wants to win with some flash.
He wants to, you know, like think about it.
They've been trying to recreate this triplets.
idea.
Yeah.
Like, you know, and I don't know how you recreate the idea of the guys that won three Super Bowls,
but they're trying.
So, I mean, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lincoln Riley.
But also, you know, I'd be a little bit surprised, but how much, like, influence and
how much of the voice of Zeke Elliott, you know, can come down, can help Irvin get that job.
That's very interesting.
I like what you said.
Dallas not only wants to win, they want to win with some flash.
Yes, absolutely.
Listen, it's a business.
That's why Jerry got mad this morning at the Dallas guys when they said, are you
embarrassed because what they were really saying is you are you embarrassed about your business and jerry
got very testy on dallas radio absolutely this is my business and this is a great business i just don't like
we're not winning enough games right now let me go to the game of the weekend in many eyes kansas
city at new england uh when i was a kid younger there was a guy named don coriel that coached with
the chargers they were great every year they were innovative progressive dan fouts kellen winslow
john jefferson munchy they were just fascinating they were andy
read. They were innovators, play designers. His coaching tree was successful. I feel Andy's the last
great coach in football without a Super Bowl. But there are critics of Andy that say, his football's
built for September. It's not built for late. So they go to Foxborough this weekend. Who do you like
and why? I like New England. I just think their backs are against the wall. I think everybody's
writing them off. I think Patrick, as as great as he is, I think he, the hopes and dreams ride on
Patrick Mahomes shoulder in Kansas City.
And I don't think that it has to be that way,
but I just think that when it comes down to it,
people do say Andy's September football.
I don't think he runs the ball enough.
I think he just puts it all on Pat's shoulder.
And I think, Pat, you know, shoulders that responsibility.
But I think that when you get into these tough games,
you need to control the ball,
you need to control the flow of the game.
You need to know when your defense needs to break.
You need to know when you need to take some time.
You need to know clock management.
And over the years, I think Andy has lost a lot of playoff games
by poor clock management.
It's interesting.
I'm the biggest Andy Reid fan in the world,
but the criticisms are he doesn't develop great running games.
He's great for quarterbacks and receivers.
By the way, the weather in September, October is perfect.
As it gets cold and you need running games
and less vertical explosion is where Andy has struggled.
I think that's a fair criticism.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think Andy's a great coach, but, I mean,
Belichick, I think their backs are against the wall.
Their record at home in December is phenomenal.
And I think, you know, Brady just does just enough.
And I think, man, that defense, it's scary.
They can make you play left-handed.
When I say make you play left-handed,
you'll prepare for something all week,
and then you'll get to the game,
and it's just like they've never done this before.
And by the time you figure out an adjustment, it's halftime,
they got a two-score lead.
Orlando Scandrick, so you're taking the Cowboys to win this division.
Yes.
Do you get, as a former cowboy and Eagle,
I have this feeling with you.
You still like Dallas.
You regret leaving.
that you'd almost like to see Dallas top it off here.
Of course, but I mean, at the end of the day, I'm a realist.
I've, you know, been a part of both organizations.
They're black and white.
They're the front of the page and the back of the page.
They're totally different in their own way.
I don't think the Eagles have a terrible organization, just they're different.
I think Dallas's owner is different.
Dallas's leadership structure from an ownership.
General Manager is different.
I think Jason Garrett is night and day from Doug Peterson.
I just think they're totally different.
But I think in this sense, Dallas has the team and the schedule and they got everything on their side for this.
Yeah.
They are the healthier of the two teams and frankly have been all year.
And we sit here and we want to compare them and we want to say the Eagles beat Buffalo and they beat Green Bay and they beat Chicago.
But we overlook what happened in Frisco, I mean not Friscoe.
I'm sorry.
We overlook what happened in Arlington, Texas.
It wasn't.
It wasn't pretty.
And I mean, the Eagles haven't forgot.
You know, the score didn't even really indicate the type of weapon that was served.
Yes.
Orlando Scandrick, the former cowboy and eagle great seeing you.
Blazing five top of the hour.
Coming up next, is it fair?
The Cowboys may get a home playoff game and have a losing record.
I'll have some thoughts on that coming up again.
Blazing five top of the hour.
Pressures on not only the Cowboys and Eagles on me.
I've never dipped below 500 in my career at this point.

we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about,
wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,

We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
A rep.
My mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?

It's a Friday top of the hour, the Blazing Five.
Most pressure on me ever.
Never dip below 50% ever doing this for like 15 years.
So today we got a lot of pressure on us.
It's great to have you in.
I'll get to the, if you have not heard it, Jerry Jones blows up at a Dallas radio guy who asked him if he was embarrassed about his franchise, which of course, you're asking him if he's embarrassed about his business.
Billionaires get a little testy about that.
So there is a discussion, though, this morning that Dallas is six and seven and Philadelphia is five and seven, and Dallas is going to get not only a playoff game, but a home playoff game.
And that makes people upset because Minnesota beat him in Minnesota is way better.
and Seattle is way better at 10 and 2, and they may have to play on the road,
or San Francisco, if they lost or the Saints would have to play them.
First of all, conferences, divisions, regions, and resources have never been equal in sports.
A Seattle team, regardless of the league it's in, has to travel way more than anybody else.
In baseball, there is no salary cap, meaning Yankees have a million dollars, and Tampa Bay has nothing.
We know in college football and college basketball, but primarily college football,
you can be in the same conference with somebody Stanford,
and you can't get half the players in that Oregon does
because of academic standards.
Same for Vanderbilt, who can't get in the same kind of players,
perhaps that the football powers can in their same conference.
You've got to get over even.
Here's the second thing.
In the NFL, if you think you're in a great division, it ends really quick.
I'll give you an example because there's so much parity
and because we have a regulated level of violence, guys get hurt.
two years ago, three NFC South teams made the playoffs.
Atlanta, Carolina, and the Saints.
Today, Carolina's fired their coach.
Atlanta's going to fire their coach.
Tampa's still a mess, and the Saints have separated.
Now it's one of the worst divisions, and they don't even know who's going to be coaching
Carolina in Atlanta.
Years ago, the NFC West was a laughing stock.
Oh, then the Niners hired Jim Harbaugh, the Seahawks hired Pete Carroll,
this kid named Sean McVeigh showed up,
nine years old coaching the Rams,
and now you'll look at it, plus Kyler Murray,
and you're like, I wouldn't want any part of that conference.
So resources have never been even.
We also have, in recent memory, three different times.
We're a division-winning team with an average record,
beat a wild card team with a really good record.
Chargers did it when they won a division at 8 at 8.
Seattle did it when they won a division.
Remember that 7 and 9,
they had to host the Saints.
They did host the Saints who were supposed to be great.
Marshawn Lynch had the run of the century,
and they beat him.
Carolina was 7, 8, and 1.
And won a division.
Everybody's like, it's unbelievable.
And they won a game over a wildcard team with a better record.
We know the SEC has better athletes than the Pack 12.
It's not fair.
You've got to get over the victimhood culture in sports.
I understand life sometimes.
They're real victims.
Sports, regions, resources.
I mean, Dallas makes so much money on its game day, so much more than Jacksonville or Oakland do.
Dallas, on money alone, on game day revenue alone, should never lose to a team like Tampa, Jacksonville, Oakland, Buffalo.
And we just saw Buffalo go to Dallas and work them.
I mean, there are weather advantages.
There are tax advantages to play in Florida in Dallas.
There's a reason the NBA teams in Texas, the Mavericks, the Spurs, and the Rockets.
have had some success.
They don't take as much of your money, and the winter's pretty good.
The weather's pretty good in the winter.
I always thought, God, if I was an NBA guy, I would want to play in the state of Texas.
No state taxes, cool cities, and I'm in the middle of the country.
I got less travel and less taxes.
So you got to get over it.
Dallas or Philadelphia are going to host a playoff game.
Listen, here's the truth about Dallas.
It doesn't matter where they play.
They're not lasting very long.
Okay?
They're not winning a playoff game.
If they host San Francisco, they're going to get bludgeoned.
If they host Seattle, they're going to get smoked.
This is a completely out-of-rhythm offense, below-average the average coach team that makes no adjustments.
And listen, the owner, Jerry Jones, is Mr. Optimism.
And this morning on Dallas radio, Jerry Jones was in a lousy mood.
All right, Jerry, you come on every week, win or lose, you answer questions, you know the tolos and the Cowboys fans
want answers today, what answer do you have for how this team is playing right now?
We're not playing very well.
Are you embarrassed?
Are you embarrassed as an organization about how the team is playing?
Hey, get your damn act together.
You're set.
Okay?
We're going to have a good visit this morning, but settle down just a little bit.
I mean, as a Cowboys fan, Jerry.
We've got a lot to go over.
We're not going with your question, but I'm going to give you the answers I want to give you
this morning and I don't like your attitude to come in.
I've been traveling all night and I'm not, I don't have the patience to Jack with you
today.
You know, that team's not going to last long.
All right.
It doesn't matter if they're play at home on the road.
They're not beating the Niners.
They're not beating the Seahawks and they're not beating the Vikings.
They just don't have the coaching.
They're not beating Kyle Shanahan.
They're not beating Pete Carroll.
They're not beating Mike Zimmer.
They're not beating Kirk Cousins.
Jimmy Garoppolo or Russell Wilson.

weekend of football. I was looking this morning. There's only about three NFL
games that don't count, don't have seeding or playoff ramifications.
We have three championship college football games, a pack 12.
We have four, actually, conference championship games this weekend.
Ohio State, Wisconsin, LSU, Georgia.
Of course, you're going to have Oregon and Utah.
Oklahoma's going to be involved in one.
So it's a great week.
It's one of the best weekends of the year.
Conference championships, NFL games, week 14, sort of deciding the seating.
We mostly know who's in the playoffs.
mostly outside of the NFC East.
I'll get into that in a second.
And some more thoughts.
Troy Aikman went off last night on the Cowboys.
I'll get to that in about 10 minutes.

How are you?
I'm great.
So what kind of soup did you end up going with?
Lental.
Lental soup.
I had lentil soup last night.
A house record is four bowls.
I had two.
Four bowls?
That's the house record.
So last night I just had two bowls.
Didn't eat that much.
Was it like simultaneous?
You spaced it out.
No, knocked and knocked them.
right back for seconds. Bang, bang, right after. And then I was done. So it was fantastic. I'm going to go skiing tomorrow. Back on Sundays for Fox NFL kickoff. So here we go. Blazing 5. I've never been under 50% ever at this time. I'm at 51.5%. I love my picks this week. Four I love. Here we go.
That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. It's Collins. Blazing five. Ravens and Bill's.
Like Baltimore, I love a minus six. Listen, Lamar Jackson. I don't care. It's in Baltimore.
Buffalo. He has 14 touchdowns and three picks on the road this year. He's been a great road
quarterback. Baltimore is a great early team, 151 to 79 edge in the first half. What does that
mean? That Josh Allen is going to be playing from behind. He's still young. He is still in terms
of accuracy, hit and miss. Buffalo's coming off their biggest win of the decade against
the Dallas Cowboys, a young team that's.
It pulls back.
Baltimore is a handful.
And Baltimore won last week, but did not think it played particularly well.
So they're still fighting for that number one seed.
I like the Ravens to win comfortably 30 to 20.
Bengals and Browns.
This number is fluctuating.
It's a good number, though, if you're a better.
I'll take the Browns minus seven and a half.
You can get it minus seven in some places.
First of all, Freddie Kitchens gets exposed when he faces a Pete Carroll or a Sean
McVay or a Belichick or a Mike Tomlin.
But this week he faces Zach Taylor.
There's no big coaching advantage and there is a huge personnel advantage.
Cleveland's got a very good defensive front with or without Miles Garrett and the Bengals,
forget what you saw last week, have a bad O line.
The Brown's defense is top five and six in many categories and Freddie Kitchens and the staff
are coaching for their lives.
Cincinnati's staff is intact.
Baker Mayfield's played Cincinnati well before.
I'll take the Browns to win, 32 to 23 and cover.
Broncos at Texans.
Love this pick.
I'll take Denver plus eight and a half.
Again, the Texans come off one of their biggest wins in a decade,
beating the Patriots on television.
Oh, my God, the Texans are amazing.
No, they're not.
They're an average team that have a ridiculous wide receiving core
and a brilliant young quarterback who makes plays.
They look like flag football half the time.
But do you trust them?
Here's what I trust in this game.
defense, Vic Fangio in Denver.
After a lousy start, in our last eight games, they're four and four, and they're a tough out.
They're a tough out.
Vic Fangio, by the way, could be coaching for his job here.
Their defense is number one in Denver in the red zone, number five pass defense.
They force you into field goals instead of touchdowns.
That's why I like the number.
By the way, Drew Locke's opening start pretty good, pretty fun.
Kids got an arm.
Broncos cover Texans win.
I'll take the points.
27 to 23.
Chiefs and Patriots.
Rear-view mirror people love New England.
I'm going to take Andy Reed, Kansas City, and the points.
If you look at Andy Reed and Kansas City against New England in the regular season,
they have been money.
One, two, or three games, 41 points a game, and the Chiefs are four and one on the road this year.
New England is a limited offense that cannot win a shootout.
We know that.
We've seen that they have to win the way that won against Dallas.
If they don't play low-scoring games like the game they played against Philadelphia,
and Dallas, they can't win right now.
And as Lamar Jackson's exciting us and Jimmy Garoppolo so handsome and blah, blah, blah, blah.
Anybody looked at Patrick Mahon's stats?
They're pretty good.
He's got 108 passer rating, 65% completions, 20 touchdowns and two interceptions.
This is not a pop gun offense.
This is not going to be 17 to 10.
This is going to be in the 20s to high 20s.
Kansas City is going to win this game.
Take the points.
2823.
Steelers at Cardinals.
You're going to think I'm nuts on this.
I'm going to go Arizona plus two and a half.
Last week, I'm always concerned about NFL teams that are involved in huge emotional games.
Pittsburgh was in a wildly emotional game with Cleveland pull back.
By the way, Mike Tomlin is a road favorite out west.
I've seen that before.
Don't love them.
Since week eight, Pittsburgh can't score.
They're 24, 25th, 26 in every stat that matters offensively.
They're on a third quarterback.
Since week eight, they're averaging 18 points a game.
Kyler Murray, just every week there's a game you got to throw out.
Throw out the Rams game.
Throw it out.
Kyler Murray's given you 65% completion percentage as a rookie, 95-passer rating.
He's a very good quarterback who had an outlier awful game.
This is an Arizona team at home getting points against the Steeler team of a highly emotional win.
Pittsburgh's just a one side of the ball football team.
Nice young defense.
Offer nothing offensively.
I'm going with the upset.
You'll think I'm nuts.
2420 Arizona.
I'll take the points.
All of our odds provided by Fox Bet.
So I like the Ravens as favorites.
The Browns as favorites.
Denver and Kansas City and Arizona as dogs.
Whitlock thinks I'm nuts every time I bet Arizona.
He just thinks I'm nuts.
Well, maybe I am.
So last night, the Cowboys lose.
They're on display, not as close as the score would indicate.
Dallas has a good opening script, opening drive, then they stink.
Once again, third quarter, make no adjustments.
So we keep pointing fingers at the coach, and we keep pointing fingers at the owner,
and we keep pointing fingers at the quarterback.
But I've always said the NFL, there's three ingredients to win.
Find the franchise quarterback, make him comfortable, and then make their quarterback.
their quarterback mostly uncomfortable, and you win a bunch of games.
New England finds Brady.
They've had great O-line play, and they usually have situationally a very good pass rush.
That's the league.
Anybody noticing all Dallas losses have one common thread?
The quarterbacks all look really comfortable.
Last night, Mitch Tribusky had one of his best games.
Jeff Driscoll, Sam Darnold, Aaron Rogers, Josh Allen.
We all want to point at the coach and the coordinator and the quarterback,
And they are culpable to some level too.
But three of the last four quarterbacks Dallas has faced have eaten them alive running.
This is an old staff on the defensive side led by Rod Marinelli, who does not adapt much,
who does not evolve much.
He was a head coach briefly with an awful record.
He's an assistant who's kind of stuck in his ways.
Jason Garrett, who's more laconic and sort of not a yell or screamer.
Marinelli's very intense.
He's sort of the opposite of him.
But I watched this defense, and my takeaway last night was, boy, Mitch Trubisky looked comfortable,
and boy, Jeff Driscoll look comfortable, and Sam Donald had his best game, and Kirk Cousins look comfortable.
Dallas never makes a quarterback, an opposing quarterback, feel like they're in crisis.
They have time, they can run around.
And I think the coaching for Dallas on the defensive side isn't special, and I'm not sure the personnel on the defensive side is special.
DeMarcus Lawrence, I like a lot.
Jalen Smith, linebacker, I like a lot.
But Byron Jones has not played well, and he's supposed to be their best corner.
And for whatever reason, he's regressed.
And the other thing is, because the offense is sputtering so three and out after the opening drive,
the defense gets tired.
That's why Dallas is tackling erodes in every game.
By the second half, the defense is worn out.
They can't chase the Josh Allen.
They can't chase Trubisky.
They're tired.
the defense is a poor tackling defense, mostly in the second half, because they're shot.
Troy Aikman talked about this.
You know, who's going to replace Jason Garrett?
It would be great if there was somebody on this staff in Dallas, but I just don't think it's a very good coaching staff.
You know, living in Dallas, Joe, I just have to bring it up.
There's a lot of discussion as to whether or not Jason should keep his job now.
Something shouldn't happen during the season, but you have to ask yourself, who on that staff has,
earned the right to be an interim head coach. I can't think of one guy who's done a good enough
job with his position, much less a coordinator, that she would put in that seat. So I don't
envision anything happening, but you never know. This has been a real eye opener once again.
Matt Nagy, a very clever offensive coach, led Mitch Trubisky to 23 of 31, 245 yards,
three TDs, scrambled 10 times for another 60 yards, six yards a rush. It looked like a coaching
mismatch. We don't think Trubisky's great, do we? But once again, he looked great against Dallas's
defense. So there's a lot of culpability here. I just don't think it's a terrific staff.
Trubisky looked about as good as I've ever seen him play. I'll say this. It didn't sway my
opinion. I think he's a very limited thrower. I will say Chicago's done a good job to say,
this is what he does well. So we're going to do this thing well. I just don't think he's an elite
thrower. I do think he's an athlete, and I do give him credit for hearing all this negativity
from guys like me, and it doesn't bother him. And there is something to be said for that,
for the Daxes that get ripped and for the Trabiski's get ripped, and they just tune it out.
Baker Mayfield has to have an opinion on everybody else's opinion.
Tribusky just head down, play football, that part I like about him, and he is athletic.
But that to me felt like once again the cowboy defense makes everybody look like Namath.
I mean, just every week. It doesn't met Jeff Driscoll, Darcycle, Darcyl.
Arnold, Rogers, cousins, doesn't matter.
Coming up next, one of my favorite guests, Rich Ornberger,
was an offensive lineman for the Patriots and the Chargers.
Fascinating guy.
Radio host out in San Diego got a lot of theories on New England, the NFL.
What's he seeing with the Cowboys?
By the way, is their offensive line?
Why isn't Zeke running for more on average?
He watches offensive line.
What's happening with the Cowboys, quote, great offensive line?
That's all coming up.

Rich Orrumburger is a former New England Patriot.
Also played for the New York Giants in Arizona,
and he is now living in San Diego doing that morning show
and the afternoon stuff.
You do mornings or afternoons?
I do afternoon.
Lose cannons.
Yes.
And you guys are that.
All right.
So let's talk. I want to ask you as an offensive line. And when I get you, and I've always been good friends with offensive line. And Damian Woody's a buddy of mine. And I would always ask him these offensive line questions. So I'm told Dallas's offensive line is great. But yet outside of one big explosion, Zik, two and a half yards of carry. Is it a scheme issue? Is it a scheme issue? Is it an offensive line issue? I thought they're running game off the scripted plays in the first drive and do anything.
Now that's a really, you're on to something there because this has been.
happening in consecutive games now where their first 10 plays or so when you're in the regular
down and distance and you can work off that script are really stunningly effective. And then once it
gets into the gameplay where the feeling you out phase is over defensively and you have to start
reacting to what the defense is doing too. That's where the scheme struggles. And that's where the
staff struggles. Yeah. And so Zeke, he's only had his third run of 20 or more yards last night.
I mean, this season's almost over.
That's shocking.
That's a very expensive running back to have such a paltry statistic in an explosive play category.
I look at Zeke.
I look at the offensive line.
I look at the scheme.
I look at the receivers blocking down field.
And I feel like as a group, all of them aren't doing enough to get it done in the run game.
And we saw that, I mean, last night was without questioning an example.
They're a very bad adjustment team at half.
In fact, they haven't scored.
I think it's like three games.
They haven't scored.
Last night, they only had one or two first downs in the third quarter.
You've been in locker rooms at half.
Some teams, New England's fantastic at half.
Pete Carroll's teams are always good.
You almost in the Super Bowl wait for the Patriots.
They never score a touchdown early.
You wait for their adjustment.
That's what they do.
Dallas does not adjust terribly well.
Do you believe that's a time-wasting element?
It's a lack of composure element.
have you ever been on a team that you thought adjusted brilliantly and it didn't adjust well?
Oh, sure.
I mean, perfect example was, I mean, they were exact opposites was when I was with the New England Patriots and then the very next season,
2011 season with the Patriots, and we went all the way to the Super Bowl, lost to the Giants in 2012.
And then I went to the Arizona Cardinals and I was on a five-win team.
And I remember some of the notes we were given at halftime losing by two scores were keep it up.
It'll work.
keep it you're just like whoa whoa whoa whoa let's talk about what's not working and what is instead of like
you know treating this situation like it's just novacane the numbing effect will take place soon no they're doing
things that we didn't plan for what is our plan moving forward so that would shock people to know
that there are teams that are just palm palm at halftime oh absolutely there's absolutely teams that
they'll get to the whiteboard and they'll either, well, for whatever reason,
they'll either not know what adjustment needs to happen to have too much faith in the game plan
they entered the game with.
Stubborn.
And want to stick to it, stubbornness.
Or really feel like their team is incapable of making the adjustments and it'll get worse instead of better.
In New England, that was never the fear because if you couldn't make adjustments,
they got rid of you soon.
You ought to be smart to play there.
But in other places, the assumption is, well, if the quotient of the ruin isn't high
enough to handle these adjustments. We're not even going to bother. That's bad. Well, Dallas is a lousy
adjustment team. Okay, Philadelphia, Dallas, the last time, the next time they play is in Philly.
I have been sort of on the Dallas bandwagon. I think they have a healthier roster. I think
Philadelphia, it's easy to sympathize with them. They've had a cluster injuries in the secondary
in the first month, cluster injuries with wide receivers in the second month. They have gone on the road.
They won at Buffalo. They won at Green Bay. I look at Philadelphia and think, that tells me they
could win a playoff game. Not two, but they could win a playoff game. Dallas has been healthy and
crappy. Dallas has had most of the tough games at home and can't win. So to me, part of me is just
like, I don't care who wins it, but I like structure. I think there's sympathy for Philadelphia's
I mean, injuries are one thing. Cluster injuries are the nightmare of the league. They've had
secondary, receivers, O-line, all three good offensive linemen for Philly have missed multiple games.
If I said to you down the stretch, Eagles, Cowboys, Who Wins It, Why?
It's going to be the Eagles, and here's why.
The foundation of that house is stronger.
Doug Peterson is the final say on things in Philadelphia.
Jerry Jones has completely devenomized Jason Garrett.
I mean, it's shocking to me, if it's true what they say,
that he'll be relieved of his duties at the conclusion of this season, why wait?
Because essentially, you've taken a rattlesnake
and you've made him a python.
Look, I'm not afraid of snakes, but I'm afraid of some snakes.
And so when you tell me that that's a python, I'll go in there and I'll pick them up and I'll be like,
oh, wow, you know, maybe I'll be a little afraid he'll bite me.
But I'm not going to be worried about dying.
I'm not going to be worried about being cut.
When you're a Dallas cowboy and you have a difference with Jason Garrett, who do you go to,
Jerry Jones?
When you're a New England Patriot and you have a difference opinion with Bill Belichick,
you're gone.
Same with Doug Peterson in Philadelphia, the bones of the bones of you.
of that house is stronger because he's final say.
And also, flashback to last season, the Philadelphia Eagles cluster injuries?
I mean, if you were following their injury report, the fact that they survived the season,
got to Soldier Field, beat the Bears, and then advanced to the Saints in the divisional round,
it was shocking.
I realized Matt Nagy changed the culture, and he's the Bears' savior last season,
and he gets coached the year.
That award should have gone to Doug Peterson for what he did, and I think we could see
similar story coming out of the NFC
this season. Okay. Let's
shift to a couple of interesting topics,
I think. I want to talk about
you have great insight on
the Patriots, but I don't think
this is an elite offensive line. I do not
think they have a vertical dimension.
This is not a team that you have to ever double
the tight end. There are certain
rear view fundamentals I understand
we embrace, but I'm a windshield guy.
I don't think you could, this is not a night
they beat Philly because Philly couldn't score.
and they can beat Dallas because Dallas can't score.
Kansas City can score.
I don't think this is going to be in the mid to high 20s, right?
Like I like Kansas City for, I know we have all these numbers and stats and history.
I think there's real there's realizations with New England that Brady knows.
That's why he's pissed during games.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, he's frustrated.
I mean, it's clear.
But communication on the sideline, it's clear.
And there's a lot of reasons you just mentioned a bunch of them.
To speak about this game specifically, they better keep up.
I mean, or that defense better play the best game they've played all season against Kansas City
because you have to be able to score with Kansas City to win that football game.
And the Patriots have been anemic offensively.
A lot of the reasons are because they just don't have enough ingredients in the cabinet to make the stew.
I mean, who is he throwing the ball to outside of Julian Edelman that we've heard of?
Or he trusts.
Yeah, right, right.
Honestly, I mean, the go-to guys, you'll see it sometimes.
He'll look downfield and you'll see.
him, there's defeat in his eyes as he takes a knee almost instead of getting hit with the
hard sack in pocket because he has nowhere to go with the football and he's not a good enough
athlete and he knows it and he's 42 years old to extend to play like a Patrick Mahomes.
So he'll live to see another down but he just doesn't have the ingredients downfield.
Also it should be noted the one thing they've had during this run is superior O line play.
as somebody who played it, this is a pretty average.
they're missing their center.
Their left tackle has been a revolving door.
I don't think Shaq Mason's had his best year.
I don't see the push.
They don't have their full back.
I mean, when you watch the Patriots O line, what do you see?
They're just not sustaining blocks long enough.
And there's not enough continuity throughout the season.
One of the most fascinating stats is usually the healthiest offensive lines
or some of the top performing offensive wines
because playing together over long stretches really helps.
For that unit, yeah.
Especially that unit, which so much that can change.
And that's part of the frustration, too,
because when you're adding and subtracting players,
sometimes that limits your playbook.
So a guy like Tom, who's operating at a scientist level on the football field,
may have to dumb it down because of all the new pieces in place.
And that can be frustrating, too,
because he may see the look he wants to get to and knows he absolutely cannot.
Yeah, I think we're seeing a lot of that Rick Orrumburger,
former NFL offensive linemen six years in the league.
I said this yesterday.
There's a difference between a fad, the Hummer, and the future, Tesla-ish, you know, tech-driven cars.
Cybertruck.
Yeah.
From the Atkins diet, eat steak all day, and be a vegetarian or a vegan, plant-based diets do generally work.
Running quarterbacks.
For the longest time, I was always like, fat.
But I don't feel that anymore.
And it's not just Lamar.
We've got cultural changes in the league,
spread offenses in college football.
Man, I couldn't draft a pocket quarterback, Rich.
If you can't move, you've got to be at least Daniel Jones.
You've got to be at least Sam Darnold, right?
Right, right.
As an offensive lineman, would you like the running quarterback or the pocket guy?
Well, as an offensive lineman now, it is,
I mean vastly different. I left the league five years ago. And if you couldn't, if you couldn't run block
and from a two-point stance and a three-point stance, you couldn't play in the NFL. Now, really,
what it comes down to is a vast majority of teams are running more from the shotgun, the pistol, even.
You're in a two-point stance a lot more often. And so that's what these guys are used to doing,
because they came up that way in high school. They came up that way in college now.
And as far as a dual threat quarterback or the athletic quarterback, I'm with you.
This culture is changing.
Two reasons why this is so effectively used in college in the NFL now is because a dual threat quarterback is the vitamin C of any poor offense.
All of a sudden, it's a cure all.
Everything looks better.
Bad offensive line, dual threat quarterback.
Bad receivers can't get separation, get a guy who can extend to play.
And then they get separation laid on the scramble drill.
Bad running backs, a guy who can run the ball at the quarterback position where if he's,
He has scripted place for him and you can add a blocker and you are plus one to the side you're running,
well, that cures a lot of ills in the run game too.
This is vitamin C.
Vitamin C is great for an offense.
You got to have that.
And it takes a while to sculpt a pocket passer.
Normally pocket passers aren't hitting their prime until post 30.
You are leaving your prime as a dual threat quarterback when you hit 30, but you got that eight-year window where you can be great.
We saw it with Russell Wilson.
and we saw with Cam Newton.
We've seen it in parts with Carson Wentz.
He's been injured.
But you can really hit stride as a young quarterback in this league
and with the short attention span of the general public of sports viewers
and of owners now, switching head coaches like underwear.
I'll take now.
Take now.
That's why general managers are gone.
Jalen hurts, especially if these playoffs go the way we think they're going to go.
I mean, his draft stock may skyrocket.
if you see some of these dual threat guys end up hoisting a Lombardi trophy.
Yeah, I mean, listen, I, Joy and I talk about this.
Outside of New England, nothing lasts in this league.
So just have a capable backup.
By the way, now because the best athletes in high school and college football play quarterback,
you don't have to draft the quarterback in the first two rounds,
but just every other year in the fifth round, all right,
is this guy in Texas Tech, he's kind of like a really, really, really poor man's RG3 in Lamar.
just have a guy in your stable.
So if Lamar gets whacked for a week,
what you don't want to do is go from Lamar
banged up for two weeks to a pocket guy.
No, you can't do that.
Can't. So you just have to have, I mean,
you ain't ever had behind Eli,
you wouldn't have Kaepernick.
Behind Lamar, you wouldn't have Andy Dalton.
Exactly right.
You have a guy who can jump in.
And, I mean, look, this is,
pocket passers need to be replaced by pocket passers too.
You know, Tom Brady goes down,
Matt Castle in, huge contract on the other side of that plan.
playing gear because he was a pocket pass who was able to fill the role and and play that role,
same as a dual threat guy. If you're Baltimore, you've done a fabulous job backing him up with
RG3 because in spots, that can look similar. And as a matter of fact, they run this Heisman
formation where they actually utilize RG3's talents as a pitchman on the option. Yeah.
It's all, it's all starting, man. And it started at the high school level where the best athlete
has been used that quarterback.
Colleges were like, that's smart, we'll do it too.
NFL slow to change but is seeing it now.
These are the athletes we have available to us in the draft.
We're going to capitalize on it.
Great seeing you, Rich Ormberger.
Love having you on the show.
You just do great stuff.
You think about a lot of stuff.
You deliver it for us every day.
Have a great weekend.
Thank you.
Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Trubisky led the Bears to a big 31-24 win over the Cowboys last night. He had a season high of four total touchdowns.
And wide receiver Anthony Miller said this type of performance is exactly what they have always expected from their quarterback.
He's just been a leader. A lot of people have been downing him, you know, calling him, this that and the third, man.
But we've been rocking with him in this locker room. We've always had confidence in him.
coaches had confidence in him.
He's just showing y'all what he can do.
It's no surprise to us.
By the way, I will say this for Trubisky's sake, for all the problems, it felt like, I could
be wrong on this, but it felt like the teammates.
Did you see the sidelines after he scored?
They like Mitch Trubisky.
That was always the thing, Joy.
When he got drafted, people said he's a guy's guy, players will love him.
They're rooting for him.
And I don't always feel that way with quarterbacks.
They are rooting for this guy on that sideline.
They like him.
Also, you know, particularly in Chicago, they didn't have a stretch of a very warm guy at quarterback for a while with Jay Cutler.
Yeah.
This is, that's always been the book on Mitch Chibisky, that he is very well liked, and he is a leader, and he does have all of those intangible.
So we knew that.
And nobody's really, I mean, unless it's very obvious that your personality is not warm and you're not, you really do not have leadership qualities, no one's ever really questioned that about Mitch Chibisky.
It's always been, what are you doing on the field?
To his credit, that was a great performance from him last night.
This is exactly what he can do.
Run around a little bit, occasional passes play action.
Can do.
Can do.
Now, I'm still not buying into Mr. Busky long term.
It doesn't mean that somebody can't have a great stretch of games or even, I mean,
Nick Foles won a Super Bowl.
So anything can happen.
That said, they are still in the playoff hunts.
Kind of.
Kind of.
So they're a game and a half back out of the second wildcard spot, which the Vikings have.
so they need to win out.
They need the Vikings to lose another game
besides the Week 17 game.
And they are at the Packers, then they have the Chiefs,
and they're at the Vikings.
So they need a Christmas miracle.
Yeah, that's not going to happen.
But look, it's nice to finish the season on a high note.
Obviously, that's an incredible stretch of games
at the Packers, at the Vikings,
and playing the Chiefs at home.
I don't think they'll win any of those games.
But that said, the way that Mitchell's playing,
I do wonder if that,
influences them a little bit into next year.
It's going to be a good topic.
I mean, it's a very, what have you done from me lately league.
So if he continues to play this way, even if they lose, it will be interesting.
I'm still not buying it.
The Cowboys lost their third straight game last night and dropped to under 500 on the season.
After the game, Jerry Jones made it very clear how unhappy he is the day of the team right now.
Well, it's not.
It's leveled out here.
It's losing, losing, losing.
So I'm not trying to be funny here, but the point is that we've got to win a football game.
Well, yeah, everything does kind of feel like that, that they just keep losing, losing, losing.
They have the Rams next week, then they're at the Eagles, and against the Redskins.
They obviously still could win this division.
God, Dak was out of rhythm.
He was really out of rhythm.
Yeah, I mean, it was not a great performance by the Cowboys.
I mean, I said this was a must-win game, that it was a very, very important game, crucial game for the Cowboys,
because it is optically.
They are talking about firing Jason Garrett,
what's going on with Dak,
should they pay him?
And then they go out again in prime time
after losing embarrassing fashion
on Thanksgiving for the whole world to see their next prime time game
they lose to the Bears,
who for the most part are completely out of the playoffs.
So, like, this is a disaster for the Cowboys.
But that being said, you know,
Jerry is the voice of the Cowboys.
He's the face of the Cowboys
and he's very frustrated and down.
and he's usually at least positive about it.
I think they have to look internally at everything.
I don't think it's as simple as Dak or Garrett or Kellynne Moore.
Finally, the Pelicans are already mapping out a load management plan for Zion Williamson.
He makes his NBA debut.
GM David Griffin said that when Zion returns, he will likely not play in any back-to-back
games.
He's six weeks into his recovery from knee surgery and has reportedly started light walkthroughs
and spot shooting at practice.
His original timeline for returning was six to eight.
eight weeks, so it's going to look, it's looking now like it's going to be longer than that.
But I don't think that this is very surprising that he wouldn't play in any back-to-back games.
This is a big factor, though, and I think what's going on with the NBA this year, because
everyone's trying to figure out.
And I think it's a lot of what you're saying, which is there's just so many amazing
storylines in the NFL this year.
When's the last time we had a Thursday night game that didn't matter?
When's the last time we had a Monday night or a Sunday night?
They've all been incredible.
I've never, the Thursday night game used to be dreck.
I mean, we used to like Jacksonville and tennis.
see the Thursday night games
has there been a bad one this year? They've all
had an impact. They have. And
so Zion being out, Katie
being out, I feel like next year
is going to be a completely
different scenario and landscape. And
you have to think this draft, this
draft is going to be one of the best
drafts in years. You have a lamello ball,
RJ Hampton, Anthony
Edwards, James Wiseman,
Nico Mannion. So the whole
entire league is going to look different next year, but everything's
going to pick up once the NFL
Well, playoffs are over anyway.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.

Tomorrow, Justin Fields and number one Ohio State
looked to punch their ticket to the college football
playoff as they battle Jonathan Taylor in number eight, Wisconsin.
In the Big Ten championship game, coverage begins at 7 Eastern
4 Pacific on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
I think it's closer than people think it is conference championship weekend.
We go to Indianapolis live, the voice of college football,
Joel Clatt via the Cower Global Satellite Network.
All right, Clatster.
Every time we have these championships Saturdays,
There's four big conference championship.
One upset is going to happen.
There's going to be one.
I don't think Georgia can beat LSU.
I just don't think they match up with them.
So that one I know is not going to happen.
And I don't think the Buckeyes will lose, my opinion.
Do you see an upset on the horizon?
I do see an upset.
And I agree with you.
I don't know if it'll be in one of those games.
But I got to tell you, everybody's talking about Utah in the playoffs, Utah in the
playoff.
They better beat Oregon.
And that's an Oregon team that is good at the line of scrimmage.
They've got a first round draft pick at quarterback.
Utah better be aware tonight.
It's going to be a sloppy game there in Santa Clara.
It would not shock me at all, Colin, if Oregon beats your precious Utah team.
I know that's going to sting from your view in the chalet.
I understand that.
Utah is a team that on big stages, think about this, on big stages last year in the
Pac-12 championship game against USC on a Friday night earlier this year.
They have not played well in those stages.
And so tonight is a big.
moment for them and Kyle Whittingham, and I think Oregon's got a great chance to win that game.
Okay, you know, it's funny about that we were talking about glamour jobs. The Dallas Cowboys is a
glamour job. I'm not sure it's a great job. U.S.C. is a glamour job. I'm not sure it's a great job.
Before we go any further, they retain Clay Hilton. It's a very political school. There's a lot of power
brokers there. USC retains a coach. The fans are going crazy here in Los Angeles. Is USC truthfully?
I don't feel like it's Ohio State, Bama, LSU, Oklahoma.
Is it a great job?
I think it is.
I think you're wrong in that respect.
I think that they've fallen on hard times right now,
and I don't think it's all the athletic department's fault.
USC is a fantastic job.
Just look at the recruiting that you can do in Southern California.
One of the reasons that they're not playing great football right now
is because they haven't recruited well within their own footprint.
But that's absolutely one of the top five, six jobs in America.
If I was a college coach, I'd be desperate to try to coach at USC.
One thing that you've really got to pay attention to is there access to a pool of money for assistant coaches.
I've been told that that was a big reason why a couple of the AD candidates, not head coaching candidates,
but the AD candidates didn't want to come and be the athletic director for USC is because they looked at the pool of money that was going to be allocated for a potential change.
And they said, that's not enough.
It's one of the reasons why they had to go down the ladder and hire a guy that not many people knew about from Cincinnati and Mike Bones.
So something to keep your eye on there.
Financially, the school's in a tough position because of the $400 plus million they've had to send out in settlements outside of the athletic department.
All of that plays a part in why USC is where they're at right now, but it's certainly a financial thing.
Listen, you could have Justin Fields, Wisconsin, Ohio State.
You love Ohio State as a team.
Justin Fields, the mobile quarterback who can throw.
do you believe the NFL, this Lamar Jackson thing, this isn't a fad.
I believe it's the future, not a fad.
You're going to see one of the great ones who's coming out in a year.
You were a quarterback.
What do you make of the mobile quarterback game now?
I think that we do a disservice to the individual talents when we say it's all about a style.
I just disagree that it's all about a fad in styles.
I think talent equates.
and when talent shows up, then that person generally succeeds.
Because Lamar Jackson is succeeding in Baltimore does not mean that Trevor Lawrence's value
is going to be diminished because he's more of a quote unquote pocket passer.
Now, is there more of an avenue for the mobile quarterback and the athletic quarterback into the NFL?
Yes.
You could also argue that it's more of a supply and demand thing.
Colin, when you're an NFL GM, guess what you have a slew of to recruit, not recruit from,
but evaluate from the college game.
Mobile quarterbacks.
There's just more of a supply based on the lower levels of football,
delivering these style of players into the higher ranks.
But I don't think it's about a style.
I think we do a disservice to Lamar Jackson by saying
what makes him specifically successful is his style.
I think it's his innate talent and his work ethic and his drive
that is making him successful right now for Baltimore.
Urban Meyer is a great coach.
He now works at Fox, so I hate asking these questions,
but his name came up in the Dallas Cowboy job.
He's a college guy through and through,
has told me before he doesn't watch the NFL much.
Your gut feeling, would he work in the NFL?
Well, listen, I think Urban Meyer would work anywhere.
When you're a great coach, you're a great coach, period.
The Cowboy thing is interesting because of what he said to you.
Remember when he said, like, listen, if the Cowboys call, yeah,
that's one of the jobs that you jump off the couch and you go take.
And he essentially said that.
So my speculation is if it was offered that he would,
would take that. And let's not forget now. The MO, the blueprint for Jerry Jones to win Super
Bowls is to hire a guy like Urban Meyer, right? I mean, Jimmy Johnson had no NFL experience.
Barry Switzer had no NFL experience. He tried the Parcells route. He's tried all these NFL
guys. Maybe Jerry Jones says, you know what? Here at the end, maybe I'm going to go back to the well
that I had success with and go with a guy like Urban Meyer. And I certainly believe that if
Dallas offered Urban Meyer the job, I believe he would take it.
He used to coach at Ohio State.
You have their game tomorrow.
Is there a hole?
All these college teams look great, but every college team has a little weakness.
What's the Buckeyes hole?
I don't know if there's a weakness as much as a question, because we haven't seen it come to fruition.
I have not seen none of us have.
None of us have seen Ryan Day call a play in a one possession game inside a 12 minutes of the fourth quarter.
We haven't seen Justin Fields take a snap in that situation.
We haven't seen this team have to be one dimensional on offense.
So those are things that I don't know if they're weaknesses.
I just think that they're huge question marks.
And if I'm Wisconsin, that's what I'm desperately trying to do,
is force Ohio State to answer those questions.
How does Ryan Day coach in a big game late in the fourth quarter?
and how does Justin Fields play in a one possession game late in the fourth quarter,
in particular if you can take the running game away from them, which is very difficult to do
because J.K. Dobbins is one of the best in America.
Seven Eastern Fox, Lucas Oil Stadium, Big Ten championship game, Ohio State and number eight, Wisconsin.
I think it's hard to bury a team twice in one year.
Buckeyes beat the Badgers badly.
I think it's much closer, although I think Ohio State's talent is just ridiculous.
I'm with Clatt.
I think Oregon has a shot to beat Utah, although unlike Clatt,
I think it's a beautiful state with wonderful people, and I'm hoping Utah wins and gets into the play.
I know you hope that Utah wins. By the way, if Oklahoma wins and Utah wins, Oklahoma should go.
They've got a better resume. They're going to have better top-end wins. We should be consistent and reward teams that play Power 5 in the non-conference.
Oklahoma is the team that should go to the playoff if both of those teams win and Georgia loses.
You're breaking up. I couldn't hear that. You're breaking up.
I'm sure. I'm sure. You're the best. All right. See you, class.
Joe Klaatz, Fox, I'll be watching.
Great, good, tomorrow's the, you can make an argument.
It's the best college football Saturday of the year tomorrow.
And I think the Badgers are going to give Ohio State a pushback,
but I just think the speed dimension for the Buckeyes on the perimeter.
It's like NFL guys.
They're corners.
They have the best corners, the best receivers.
They pop up the screen.
Yeah, that's exactly right.
You watch TV, you're like, oh, yo, yeah.
You know, I mean, it's like you watch LSU's offense, the running back, the quarterback,
the old line, the receivers, the tight end.
Some teams just pop, and it's them.

your prime elevates healthy testosterone levels. He played in the NFL for almost a decade. Stanford
route. Former NFL defensive back, of course, drafted by the Raiders, played there for a long
time. It's a pleasure to have you in on a Friday. So we were talking about it's worrisome that
there's very few players in the planet at quarterback that can carry junk. Patrick Mahomes, Aaron
Rogers. We know who they are. Dan Marino, Jarrell ways. It's just Andrew Luck, I thought,
was that kind of player, that battle line. Yes. But by and large, most quarterbacks need a decent
offensive line. Jared Goff has, you know, eroded quickly when the offensive line blocking is bad.
So what concerns me about Dak Prescott, he's become good opening drive guy and good garbage time guy.
But I think some of his stats are kind of cotton candy, right?
Not filling.
Where are you at on DAC?
I think that DAC obviously is a starting quarterback in this league,
but I definitely wouldn't put him in the upper echelon top tier guys because just like what you said,
after that first drive, after that scripted 15 plays, it seems like he kind of struggles,
especially against the better teams.
the Dallas Cowboys against teams that are either 500 or below or undefeated.
And you see that play against teams that are actually pretty good and seems like he struggled.
So I get it where everybody wants to talk about over the last three years.
He's number two in wins behind Tom Brady, things like that.
But he's not somebody that can carry your team to victory.
I think that this team, the Dallas Cowboys, still has to lean on Ezekiel Elliott
and let that be the bell cow rather than try to make Dak like the head guy
and try to make him that franchise-looking quarterback
that the Dallas Cowboys appear to be trying to do right now.
Yeah, I mean, you can also make the argument,
which we, Joy and I have made for weeks,
which is Jeff Driscoll was great against the Cowboy Defense,
Sam Darnold was, Mitch Tribisky was, oh, wait, Josh Allen was.
Everybody's great.
When I see the Cowboy defense, is it a scheme issue
or is it a outside of DeMarcus Lawrence,
they don't have a lot of dudes issue?
Yeah, I think that so much has been made about the Dallas Cowboys
having a great roster.
And you see that they have a lot of good players on the defense side of the ball,
but it doesn't always translate to them bringing it every Sunday.
And that's why you see against games like the Jets or the Packers or the Bills or the Patriots.
It's shocking. It's shocking.
And they made Mitchell Trubisky look like Steve Young last night.
I mean, let's just go ahead and call it what it is.
So when you see a team that has that nucleus of good players, maybe not great but good players,
that's where you question, okay, you know what?
Now is it the coaching?
Are they not putting them in position to be successful?
And when you've seen that barrage over and over and over against the better teams,
the better offensive coordinators this year.
I was going to say, the better teams have the better coaches,
and that's when the cowboy coaches get undressed a little bit.
Go back to your career.
I don't want to make you call out a coach.
But did you ever have a defensive coach that you did think got more out of you?
Let's not be negative.
Was there a coach and you're like, man, I am in the right place all the day?
time with this coach? Yes, Rod Woodson, my last year in Oakland. And you just felt he knew you,
he knew what you could do, because I think coaching is such a huge part of this sport now.
Oh, no question. I think that Rod Woodson was one for me simply because he actually challenged me
to be more of a playmaker. Out there in Oakland, we ran a lot of man coverage, so a lot of it was
past breakups, just keeping your receiver from catching the ball. But Rod Woodson, he actually told me,
he's like, route, start making more plays on the ball, start thinking.
more about interception, not just past breakup.
And I wound up actually having my highest interception total that year because he instilled
that in me.
And that amazing.
It's amazing what coaching can do.
Yes, it actually is.
But yeah, I would definitely say that Rod Woodson comes to mind as far as actually
taking me to another level.
What kind I hear Urban Meyer, I hear Lincoln Riley.
Is there, I like Ron Rivera in Dallas, because we've had Jason Garrett and his offensive
choices.
I think their offense is, you know, I'd go get a very very.
veteran offensive coordinator. I like Ron Rivera. He's a man's man. Reminds me a little at Jack
Del Rio, Anthony Lynn, walks into a room, could deal with Jerry's nonsense. That's who works for me,
not a college guy. What works for you in Dallas? To be honest with you, as much as it looks like
Jason Garrett needs to be fired, he might be the best person for that job, not because he's going to
lead Dallas to some Super Bowl or some deep run in the playoffs, but because to be the
head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, you got to be able to deal with that man right there, Jerry Jones.
And not every coach is willing to deal with a Jerry Jones because we all know he's hands-on.
Oftentimes he wants his voice to be louder than everyone else in the organization.
So it takes a certain type of a coach to be able to deal with that.
And I think that when you look at the better head coaches in the league or just the candidates,
you're going to have to take somewhat of a subservient role to Jerry Jones if you're going to be the head guy
The Stanford route, very interesting.
And by the way, Jerry Jones was swearing on the air in Dallas today on radio in Dallas.
And my takeaway was, Jerry had defended Jason Garrett and knew this morning he couldn't because Jason doesn't want to fire him.
So this morning he was trapped.
He looked like Jason got out coached.
It was a standalone game on television.
And Jerry is prickly because Jerry doesn't want to fire Jason.
Because to your point, Jerry knows Jason lets him talk on Monday and doesn't push back.
Yes.
And this is a real thing.
Like Ron Rivera may just say, well, the Giants want me and their owners don't talk and the Cowboys want me and my owner never stops talking.
So Ron Revere is the best candidate out there.
I think he'd choose the Giants over Dallas and I think the owner's the reason.
Yeah, I definitely would as well because being the head coach for the Dallas Cowboys obviously is very different from being a head coach anywhere else.
Number one, because they're America's team.
And then number two, you have to deal with Jerry Jones.
So it's a very intricate position.
and you have to be able to deal with all the landmines that will come with being in that position.
So most guys that are really of a certain caliber to actually be able to lead a team to a Super Bowl,
they like control.
They're not going to want to sit over there and have to take all these directions from the owner
and have to be able to work around him.
They're not going to want to do that.
They're just going to want to go somewhere where they actually have complete control
because they're the head coach of the franchise.
So you like the Eagles down the stretch, I would guess,
over Dallas?
The NFCEs right now is done.
The NSCEs to me is done.
Now, the Dallas Cowboys are doneer than the Philadelphia Eagles.
So I would give it to the Philadelphia Eagles by default that they're going to win the division
simply because it appears that they have a head coach who's not on the hot seat right now.
Obviously, Jason Garrett, we see everything going on.
Every time the Dallas Cowboys lose, it's going to be a question about his job security,
things like that.
So I would give it by default to the Philadelphia Eagles because watching them blow that lead last week against the Miami Dolphins, that's very discouraging.
No, listen, but I will say this, Stanford.
They went to Green Bay in one.
They went to Buffalo and one.
They've shown an ability to go to a playoff team on the road and win.
So they've had a translation.
They can muster up three and a half hours in a playoff game and win.
They've also had absurd injuries in the secondary wide receiver line.
So my thing is with them, I have some sympathy.
for Philadelphia. They've been injured
and sometimes crappy. Dallas has been
healthy and crappy. I've got, I mean,
not to be rude, just like you're doneer.
Like, at some point, when you're bad
and healthy, I'm over you.
If you've got some excuses,
you know, there's reasons in life and excuses.
Yes. There's been real reasons
why Philadelphia has struggled
at times this year. Yeah, Deshawn Jackson
has missed pretty much all of the year. He's their
deep threat. Their only deep threat.
Yeah, so I definitely see exactly your point.
That's why, to me, I would just
give it to Philadelphia by default because it seems like they've had to overcome a lot more,
so they would have a little bit more of an excuse to your point as to why they're struggling
right now. But the Cowboys, that's just more so them just simply being, in my opinion, overrated.
Everybody always wants to put them up there as Super Bowl favorites, Super Bowl contender.
They come out the gate, they went against the Giants, the Redskins, the Dolphins.
Who are they? Like, that's three teams that everybody knew coming in this season were not going to be good.
And then they go and riddle off three straight losses.
yet they have three more straight losses, too, as you can see, the Patriots,
then the bills on Thanksgiving, and then obviously last night with the Chicago Bears.
So to your point, y'all would give to Philadelphia Eagles.
Yeah, that's why I'm wearing this green suit right now.
There you go.
Let me talk, Stanford Rout joining us, NFL for eight years.
Let's talk about San Francisco now goes to New Orleans.
Now, it's really interesting.
We saw this last year where Kansas City was the best team early, not the best team late.
and we saw where, and I think this year, San Francisco was September October champion.
And then they lose Juan Alexander, a very good.
Athletic linebacker.
Both tackles for a while, lost their fullback.
They had to go get Emmanuel Sanders wide receiver.
So they go on the road to San Francisco.
I actually think Stanford, the Niners are built to beat the Saints for this reason.
If you do not have an athletic quarterback nor a deep threat, New England, New Orleans,
They are built to beat you.
If you have a quarterback,
Kyler Murray gave him trouble twice.
Yes.
Russell Wilson gave him trouble.
Lamar Jackson gave him trouble.
New Orleans is a very good team like New England with two issues.
Immobile quarterback, no deep threat.
I think San Francisco is built to stop the pass,
not necessarily the running quarterback.
My gut feeling is it's a little breakout party for San Francisco.
I think we're going to say this Monday.
Saints are, there's a hole.
There's a way to beat them.
I love the Niners over the Saints.
And I think they, I have this feeling we're all going, you know, we saw them against Baltimore.
We saw them lose to Seattle.
And I'm like, no, those are the two teams in the league.
They're probably not built perfectly.
Yes.
Your thoughts about Niners Saints.
I think that obviously there's an easy chance that the 49ers could beat the Saints on Sunday
simply because I think that from all my.
years playing against the New Orleans Saints, whether it was with the Chiefs or with the Raiders,
if you can handle the crowd early because it gets allowed in there in that dome. You got the first
15 script that Sean Payton always loves. And their offense is built to get 10 points right now.
It is. It's built to get 10 points very quickly. Yes. If you can weather that storm in the first
quarter, you have a chance to beat them because then everything starts to slow down. But when they
get that up tempo and they get that offense going and that crowd gets behind them, it is.
very difficult to come back from a deficit to beat them in their building.
Yeah, it's funny how certain teams are very good on the script.
The Saints do that.
I mean, Sean Payton's smart.
I've got a quarterback who can't move but is deadly accurate.
Get on the board.
Get a lead.
Crowd's going crazy.
You find yourself kind of, it's a tsunami.
You're coming downhill.
You're playing against the crowd.
I want to ask you about all these athletic quarterbacks.
I don't think it's a fad.
I think it's the future because I think the sports changing college-level high school pros.
as a corner, it's hard to play man to man against a mobile quarterback.
Oh, yeah.
Because you can't turn your back.
So my takeaway is if you're a, if you are a cornerback like you, a defensive back,
you could make the argument.
I love mobile quarterbacks because I get sit in that easy zone all day.
I don't get smoked over the top all day.
I don't get humiliated.
Now, I'm not going to get to be a playmaker.
But if the NFL became a mobile quarterback league, like it or don't.
Oh, wow.
That's a multi-layered question because mobile quarterbacks bring such many dimensions to this game
as far as what you've got to stop on the defense side of the ball because, number one,
like you just said, it is difficult to cover a receiver for four seconds.
But five, six, seven, eight seconds, that gets even more daunting of a task.
You can look terrible with a mobile quarterback.
A cornerback can get humiliated.
No question. And so number one, you're going to have to cover longer because they can extend plays.
You see Deshaun Watson. You see Lamar Jackson. You see Russell Wilson guys like that.
And then with a guy like Lamar Jackson, because he's pretty much like a running back, almost playing quarterback who can throw and be accurate.
Now you've got to come up and tackle him. Just like with Colin Kaepernick back in his years with the 49ers, it brings so many dimensions that you have to stop as a defender.
So if this league was to go all mobile quarterback, oh my goodness. I'm so.
glad that I'm sitting here on this couch with you
and not still playing. It's
really interesting. So you can get embarrassed
as a cornerback because you have to be in coverage
for six seconds. He just can't do it.
Or you have to go make a tackle
and he's Lamar and he makes it look bad.
Whereas with Brady, it was like, he may pick me
apart, but if I'm athletic,
you were one of the fastest guys in the league,
you know, you're not going to beat me over the top
much. Brady would beat
you death by
a thousand cuts. Lamar could
humiliate you. Yeah, absolutely. And the
to your point, with a precision pocket passer, that's just the thing because a guy like Brady,
somebody like Manning, no, they're not going to escape the pocket.
They're not going to rush for 100 yards or anything like that.
But you can be having great coverage on your receiver.
And they can simply put that ball right where it needs to be on a dime.
And you had great coverage.
And all your coach will tell you after the players over with a route, great coverage,
but you still got beat on a touchdown.
So it still brings certain dimensions to the game that you have to stop with it being
pocket passer. You want to get them off the spot more. But yes, whenever it's a mobile quarterback,
man, it's such a daunting task. It literally keeps you up at night because I have to stop him
when he throws the ball. I got to stop him now when he's scrambling. As a defensive line,
we now have to make sure that we keep him in the pocket. The defensive ends can't get up the
field and actually create running lanes for him. It just really is a tough task when you're going
against these new age, dual thread mobile quarterbacks.
Stanford route. Great seeing you again. Love having you on.
Great seeing you too, man. Happy to be back on.
Happy for you and your family and hope you're a regular on the show.
Stanford Rout, Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, Stanford's giving it to the Eagles.
The Cowboys keep leaving the door open for the Eagles and the NFC East,
but Philly's lost all three of their games since the buy.
I know.
Doug Peterson knows that it's time that they start turning things around.
The main message is, listen, we're in a, we're in a, we're in a,
must-win situation. We know that.
For me, I got to stay the course.
I got to stay, you know, I got to stay transparent.
I got to stay as honest as I can with the team, the integrity,
talk about the character of the team and all of that with them.
And say, listen, guys, we're in that must-win situation right now.
God, I can't believe they led Miami by two scores and lost.
I mean, last week may have been great for you because the Steelers and Dolphins won,
but that last week was the I'm over, Philadelphia.
but then I watched Dallas last night and I'm like,
I'm sorry, but they got to play them at home.
I don't trust Dallas on the road.
Well, no way.
You have to pick one.
And I have sympathy for Philadelphia's injury, so I'll pick them.
Not that I don't have to love them.
By the way, I make picks all the time.
I don't love teams.
I don't know.
I mean, look, what positive can you say about the Cowboys last night?
We didn't see the Eagles.
We forgot that they got thumped by the dolphins last week.
So you're picking your poison there.
The Eagles remaining schedule.
They control their death.
If they want to win the NFC East, they play the Giants this week.
Then they are at the Redskins.
Then they play the Cowboys.
And then they're at the Giants.
Now, they are big favorites against the Giants.
They're eight and a half point favorites.
But remember, Eli Manning is going to be playing in this game.
Now, that might not mean anything to you.
But sports gods have a funny sense of humor sometimes.
Daniel Jones is out with an ankle sprain.
So it might be one of those situations where it's an Eli farewell tour.
He sneaks off, you know, one or two of these.
wins. I'm just saying there could be emotional swing there. Carson Went's last three games,
61.8 completion percentage, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 81.6 pass a rating. Do what you will
with Miami last weekend. They always sneak someone in the winter. So I don't want to overreact too
much to that, but I don't know who I'm picking. I guess I'll just stick with the Cowboys. I might
as well. I've been riding with the Cowboys our year. Might not. Might not.
I might as well stick with them. So Odell hasn't been utilizing the way he probably hoped
when he was traded to the Browns. He's under contract with a team through 2023.
but when he was asked about his future in Cleveland,
he didn't sound entirely committed.
No one knows what the future holds like tomorrow.
I couldn't sit here and tell you whether I'm going to be here,
want to be here, don't want to be here.
This is exactly where I'm at now.
So now everyone's kind of freaking out,
saying he doesn't know if he wants to be in Cleveland
or didn't say he wanted to be in Cleveland this morning.
He clarified his comments on Twitter saying,
okay, I never said I was not happy in Cleveland,
just like everyone else, I'm hopeful for better results.
Period.
Next story, please.
I always feel as a opinionist.
I have a right to any strong opinion I want,
but I don't have a right to inflame situations that don't exist.
Odell Beckham did not say anything there.
This is a non-story.
It's just a story because it's Odell and because he didn't say,
unequivocally, I will 100% be here in Cleveland if it's under my control.
It doesn't matter what Odell said.
he can't win in this situation.
So really you can get mad at them asking the question,
but again, reporters ask whatever questions they ask
and you have to be prepared for anything.
O'Dell can't win in the situation.
If he says he's 100% going to be there,
and then he asks for a trade because something changed,
he's wrong.
There's no way for him to win the situation.
The only reason it's a story is because it's O'Dell
and everything with O'Dell is a story.
But, you know, they're obviously frustrated in Cleveland.
I do think they win big this weekend.
They're playing the Bengals at home.
They're seven-point favorites.
I think they should have traded him, but they won't because John Dorsey may have to fire Freddie Kitchens,
which would him admitting, I whiffed on my head coaching hire.
Right.
And they gave up so much to get over at Dell.
Trading it would be like, okay, I whiffed on that move.
And if Baker doesn't play well, I whiffed on my number one pick move.
GMs want job security.
You could admit, okay, I got the quarterback right and O'Dell right, but I did whiff on the coach.
Owners are okay with that.
But if you start saying, Baker doesn't look good, Freddie's no good.
And we mess up the O'Dell trade.
So John Dorsey for self-preservation is not moving O'Dell Beckham.
No.
Finally, Floyd Mayweather announced that he was coming out of retirement in 2020,
and he teased teaming up again with the UFC,
and Dana White is now confirming they do have a deal ready to go.
We sat at the Clippers game.
We started talking, and we literally got a deal done right there on the court.
Shook hands, we have a deal.
If everything goes our way, Floyd and I would be doing something in October and November.
Who's the pretty strong comment?
Is it a UFC fighter or is it just a fighter fighter fighter?
Well, they're not being entirely clear about that.
They keep throwing UFC out there.
Floyd posted the picture of him and Dana two weeks ago at the Clippers game,
saying Dana and I working together again to bring the world another spectacular event in 2020.
Now, McGregor is fighting on January 18th.
He's fighting Donald Cowboy Seroni.
He wants two other fights in 2020.
So if you space them out, because he usually has about four.
months between a fight.
McGregor fights January 18th, then he fights again in, say, May.
Hypothetically, it could be McGregor-Mayweather 2 in October or November.
I'd watch it.
Everyone's going to watch it.
I didn't buy it the first time around, and obviously I was right.
You're not going to, unless it's just out of principle that you are not going to watch it,
everyone's going to watch it.
You might say you don't believe in it or, you know, it's an affront to the sport or whatever,
but you're going to watch this fight.
Everyone's going to watch it if it happens.
And I hope it does happen.
The first fight was a great fight.
My wife even liked it.
We went to the fight.
She had so much fun.
It was a completely respectable boxing fight.
It was actually a wildly entertaining night of sports.
Now, listen, the lead up to it was a spectacle.
Of course.
I hope that they don't take it to that level again.
I like spectacles.
Well, we do like chaos.
I like some of it.
I'd watch McGregor Mayweather again.
I think it's going to happen.
It seems like all signs are pointing that way.
These purists.
Entertain me.
Just entertain me in my wife.
She doesn't like sports.
If I can take her twice a year to a fight,
so I think she likes going to do, fights.
It was an incredible event.
Hockey games and fights.
That's all she likes watching.
I don't know how we survive.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd Line News.
Coming up next.
One of my favorite segments every week on a Friday.
Tomorrow's headlines today.
Always worth a good laugh with the bizarrely.
accurate Jason McIntyre in our best for last.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio, FS1 and the IHeard Radio app.
It's time to talk Super 6 NFL Sunday. Chiefs Patriots is one of the matchups this week.
Colin, help us win some money this weekend. Give us a winner and a final score.
Chiefs win 28, 23. I think they win straight out. I don't buy everything. Oh, the Patriots never
lose at home.
They're going to.
Jason McIntyre, the big lead formerly now,
just a digital guy for FS1, TV, radio, all that stuff.
By the way, you had a stat on the Patriot game.
Yes, we'll talk in depth about it shortly,
but with Brady and Edelman both play at home against the AFC,
42 and O in the last 10 years.
42 and O'Col.
That's a pretty...
Remarkable.
Yeah, I mean, listen, Edelman's his only guy.
We'll get to the game shortly.
Okay, so we call it tomorrow's headlines today.
What was the record last week?
Do you remember?
I was terrible last week.
No, no, with this segment, I think.
How were you?
And they just told me four and one.
You've been pretty hot.
We're good at this stuff.
So we predict what the headlines will be Monday morning in the American newspaper.
So tomorrow's headlines today, what will it be after the Saints 49ers game?
So interesting is San Francisco was on the road last week and they decided, you know what, we're just going to stay out east.
They're in Florida preparing for the big game against the Saints.
I don't think it's going to matter.
The headline will be Big Easy, Breezy.
Look at Drew Breeze flexing there.
It looks like Colin Cowherd's arm.
I like the Saints a lot here, Colin.
This is just one of those teams flying under the radar right now.
In the NFC, everybody's talking Seattle and the 49ers.
They've only lost two games at the buzzer.
And let's make fun of the NFC East.
What about the New Orleans Saints right now?
Number one seed, Colin.
They're totally dominant offensively.
They've been a little quiet lately,
but I just think the 49ers right now,
Jimmy G, a little overvalued, okay?
Yeah.
I looked at the numbers.
21 TD passes for,
Jimmy G.
11 of them were against the Bengals and the Arizona Cardinals.
Other than that, he's been an ordinary quarterback.
I like the Niners a lot, but I don't like them in this spot.
I think the Saints kind of serve notice that they're the best team in the NFC.
No, I think the Jimmy G numbers, you have to look.
Like last year, I said this about Baker Mayfield.
He had seven TDs, no picks against the Bengals.
If you took those numbers out, he was dreadful last year.
Average quarterback, yeah.
By the way, he plays the Bengals this week.
So Baker's numbers will rebound this week.
Okay, tomorrow's headlines.
today, headline for the Ravens and the Bills.
Yeah, it's weird.
The Bills, everybody loved them after Thanksgiving,
and then the Cowboys get thrashed last night.
Are the bills that good?
Colin?
The headline will be Lamar wins duel of the dual threats.
Josh Allen versus Lamar Jackson.
The public, you know, the gambling public,
saw the bills on Thanksgiving.
Josh Allen's good.
The defense is good.
I don't think so.
I think they struggle badly against Lamar Jackson.
He's going to run all over.
this team.
And the Ravens, Colin, did you know this?
Top four right now, the only team in the NFL,
offense, defense, and special teams.
Their kicker, Justin Tucker, has made 38 straight field goals in the fourth quarter.
That's an insane number.
The Ravens right now are the best team in the league, I think, without a doubt.
And a top three coach.
I mean, there is, to me, I don't see a big flaw.
People say, well, they're not as good playing from behind.
Yeah, they're never behind.
They're not behind.
Yeah, they trolled the Niners last week.
Lamar did have a fumble at home,
and then they just come back and win
because of special teams and defense.
Their punter is like the king of the coffin corner.
He'll just put it right down there inside the five,
and then they got the good defense events.
Baltimore team favored to win the Super Bowl now.
Tomorrow's headlines today,
what will it be after the Chiefs Patriots clash?
So your guy, Patrick Mahomes,
he's faced the Patriots twice.
Do you happen to know his record against them?
Oh, and two.
The headline will be
Patrick Mahomes.
three, baby. This is the spot for the Patriots. Okay. We talk about spot a lot. And Tom Brady
awful loss. Are you ready for this? 35 and 13, 73 percent awful loss is Tom Brady. And again,
you don't really want to buy too much into the trends. But the Chiefs right now don't run the
football. They're on their third string running back, Darwin Thompson. Their passing game,
Mahomes has been under 200 yards the last two weeks against the Chargers and Raiders.
And finally, you have to look at their run defense. 30th in the league.
okay and when you look at sony michel and james white this is one of those spots where belichick's
going to say everybody's killing us colin cowherts picking against us they're going to win this game i think
handily handily over the chief tom brady said today at his presser he said i really feel good about
this game and i thought dang it i pick the chief yeah the patriots listen i don't think they're
going to win the super bowl i think they're very susceptible but this is just over the last two
decades they always come up big here and you kind of mocked that but
What, you think it suddenly ends against Andy Reid, Mahomes, and this Kansas City defense?
Tom Brady's been hearing that he's washed.
Okay.
How do you think that's going to go over in New England?
Okay.
Finally, you love something in sports that I think is overrated.
I've said the idea for an eight-team playoff is unnecessary.
This year you could have a three-team playoff.
What is that way time about?
What's a three-team play?
Ohio State by LSU Clemson play, winner to face the box.
Well, Ohio State gets a lot?
I think the number four chair is a seat filler.
Utah's got a bad loss.
Oklahoma has a bad loss.
Georgia has a bad home loss.
But you like an eight-team playoff.
Why?
So the staff came to me.
It was like, Colin hates an 18-playoff.
I'm like, I love one.
So they had me come up with a
eight-team playoff.
Now, look at that eight-seed,
and I want to hear the laughter from you.
Boise State, when you look at an
18-playoff, you need the five
conference champs, right?
Yeah.
Two at-large teams, who, as you said,
had a bad loss.
I've got here, Georgia as an at-large team,
and Florida, which has two losses.
and then you need a non-power-five team,
whether it's Boise, Memphis, Navy,
and you're saying, Jason, you're out of your mind.
They have no chance.
Colin, when the college football season kicks off in August,
there are 130 teens in the country.
If you have an 18-playoff, everybody has a shot, right?
With the 14th playoff, 95% of the country starts the season,
no chance, none whatsoever of seeing the postseason.
I wouldn't watch Boise State LSU play if they were in my kitchen.
I thought you loved a good Cinderella, whether it's a wild card team in the NFL, an eight seed in the NBA, you know, a 16 seed in the NCAA tournament.
You love Cinderella. America loves Cinderella.
I don't love Cinderella.
Why not?
Because I do you have against Cinderella person.
I don't know.
I play the lottery because I want to be even richer than I am.
No, but in all seriousness, an 18 playoff is simply four more games of college football.
What's wrong with that?
I don't need four more games.
The games I have I like.
I don't need more.
I need less great games, not more games.
Well, you don't know that they're just going to be games.
Boise State with two weeks to prepare.
Smart coach, they put everything into this.
You're out on Boise State?
Discover.com.
Discover.com slash cashback match.
It's very good.
There's no limit.
You can earn cash back.
Boise, the town's fantastic.
I just don't want to watch their football team.
See you Monday.
Last night, a blown call changed the game.
