We got a World Series game one tonight at Fenway Park with the Dodgers, Yassie El Pueig, Clayton Kershaw, Stars Mani Machado against J.D. Martinez, Moki Betts, Chris Sale. These are the best two teams in baseball, Stars Everywhere. I got Russell Wilson later this hour, heard hierarchy an hour from now, Trent Dilford, Peter King.
Starting point is 00:03:22 We are packed. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Let's do it. Okay. So I've been talking about this lately. aggressive is winning in sports.
Starting point is 00:03:30 The Golden State Warriors were good and had a title. They went out and recruited Kevin Durant. Houston was good and had James Hardin. Went out and recruited Chris Paul. By the way, the baseball. The Dodgers were already loaded and expensive. They went and got Manny Machado. The Red Sox didn't even need J.D. Martinez.
Starting point is 00:03:48 They went out and got him anyway. The Astros won a World Series. Why? They went out and paid for Justin Verlander. In the NFL, who's being rewarded? The Philadelphia Eagle. hyper-aggressive, fourth down, free agents, the L.A. Rams, number one team in the league. Kansas City Chiefs aggressively moved up to get Patrick Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Look around sports. The Giants couldn't make a move on Eli. How they doing, one in six. Be aggressive. Yesterday, the Dallas Cowboys, and this is their brand through the years, were aggressive. And they traded a number one pick for wide receiver Amari Cooper. Now, I would prefer they give away a three, a third round pick, but that's not going to happen because other teams offered a second.
Starting point is 00:04:36 I would really prefer they offered a second round pick. But they offered a first round pick because other teams offered a second. And so they were a little, little, and they were aggressive, probably gave up a little more than I would want to. But I would have done it in a second for a third rounder. I would have done it in a second for a second rounder. So I had to move to the first. It's a terrible wide receiver draft.
Starting point is 00:05:01 This year in the NFL, it's going to be an incredible pass rushing draft. Oh, they got that covered. It's going to be a great linebacker draft. Cowboys have that covered. It's going to be a great offensive line draft. Cowboys have it covered. It's a lousy wide receiver draft. There's one great player in the country.
Starting point is 00:05:16 He's at Oklahoma and he's hurt. Maybe another receiver at Arizona State. That's it. And they need a wide receiver. But you know what this really was? You know what this moved by the Cowboys really was? It was documentation. If you're going to fire somebody in a job, you better have documentation before you do it.
Starting point is 00:05:35 And if you're going to hire somebody for a job, you get documentation to prove he's better, she's better than all the other candidates. This was a documentation move. The Cowboys have an elite left tackle. They have an elite running back. They have an elite front seven defensively. They have a very good slot receiver. They have an all-pro center, though he's hurt now.
Starting point is 00:05:54 And they got offensive coaches. You have to find out in the next 10 games if you're going to pay Dak Prescott or not. And now with Amari Cooper, you're going to have an elite running back, an elite left tackle, an above-average offensive line, offensive coaches, a playmaking perimeter player. Okay, if he can't get 275 yards, then you've answered the big question. He's not the guy. That's what this is about. Jerry Jones is saying, listen, we're going to need a playmaker. at wide receiver anyway.
Starting point is 00:06:29 And we would have drafted it in the first round. And our gut feeling is, this guy's better than what was out there. We don't need a defensive lineman. We got those. We don't need pass rushers. We don't need offensive linemen. And we don't need young linebackers. We got all that covered.
Starting point is 00:06:43 We need a playmaker at wide receiver. That's what we would have taken. It's a lousy draft. And, oh, by the way, we got to figure out if DAC is worth $24 million a year. Because in the next year, you're going to have to over. open up the wallet and pay this kid $100 million. And if you make the wrong decision, you are absolutely trapped. And so the Cowboys got aggressive yesterday.
Starting point is 00:07:08 And by the way, if Dak's not the guy, then the rookie quarterback gets Amari Cooper and Zekiel Elliott and Tyron Smith and Cole Beasley and offensive coaches. And ask yourself, if you were absolutely sure today. I went on the internet yesterday, bandwidth.com. You should try it out. And I saw a lot of this. Oh, boy, John Gruden. Woo!
Starting point is 00:07:32 John Gruden, you mopped up. All right, really? Ask yourself, who would you rather be today? The Raiders with a bunch of draft picks or the Cowboys with an elite running back, an elite left tackle, a pro bowl center, excellent young pass rushers, tremendously athletic linebackers. You'd rather be the Raiders today. with a bunch of, well, we could get that kid out of Mississippi State. You know, I like that guy out of Clemson. That Notre Dame kid's not bad.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Or tangible assets. Tyron Smith. Amari Cooper. Zique. Pass rushers. You know, Sean Lee. If you all think the Raiders won it because they accumulated a bunch of draft picks, you'd rather be the Raiders today.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I want assets. I want players. Yes, I would have rather given up a second round. pick. I would have loved to have given up a third round pick, but they couldn't do that because everybody else was offering seconds and good seconds. And Dallas is probably good enough to finish at 8 and 8 and 8. I mean, you know, 7 to 9, 8 and 8, 9 and 7, that's not going to be a great second round pick. So, and for all these people that all freak out about giving up a first round pick, let me give you a couple of teams that gave up stuff. Atlanta Falcons gave up three to four
Starting point is 00:08:57 picks to get Julio Jones. Do they regret it today? I don't think they do. Philadelphia Eagles gave up six picks to get Carson Wentz. Do they regret it today? Kansas City Chiefs gave up three picks to get Patrick Mahomes. Do they regret it today? The L.A. Rams gave up five or six picks to get Jared Gough. Do they regret it today? Calling those are quarterbacks. Atlanta gave up three or four picks to give up Julio Jones. Do they regret it today? The Cowboys gave up. up one pick at a position of need that they were going to draft anyway to get a 24-year-old wide receiver who can still play, who's got like seven years left minimum of real game. And it is documentation to figure out in one year if you pay DAC $100 million or go get
Starting point is 00:09:54 the next great young cowboy quarterback. This will document it. You'll have no questions because you'll have the left tackle. You'll have the running back. You'll have the center. You'll have Amari. You got the slot guy in Colby. You'll have all that now.
Starting point is 00:10:11 If Dak can't get you to 270 regularly, you just saved yourself $100 million. Don't ever jump over a $20 bill to get to a five. Amari Cooper's salary is irrelevant. What's relevant is given DAC $109 million and you're stuck with for four years, and he just never pans. This will document whether he's worth the money. Jason Garrett, radio this morning in Dallas, talked about the move and why they did it. We really believe that Amari can be that kind of a guy.
Starting point is 00:10:44 Again, he's 24 years old, and we think he has a bright future. And, you know, the value for a player like that at his age, that's really what it cost you. It costs your first-round pick. and if we were to get into the draft next spring, you would say, boy, is there any receiver who's as good as a guy like Amari Cooper? He's not 28, 29, 30. You're not paying for a guy for what he's done for the past six, seven, eight years for another team. We feel like he has it in front of him, and he can really benefit our team going forward
Starting point is 00:11:16 because the ability he has and the kind of person he is. I totally, totally agree with that. Do you guys realize that Amari Cooper is only six months? older than Falcon wide receiver rookie Calvin Ridley. He's a baby. Came out early. Young player. Jason Garrett's never sounds smarter smarter than that.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Completely absolutely agree. And he goes to an organization that's kind of in disarray and has a lot of fingers crossed on accumulating draft picks to one that's just missing what he is, a game changer at wide receiver. We are packed today. Jammed. I want to say this, Lakers are 0 and 3. Oh, my word.
Starting point is 00:12:03 The sky is falling. I'm telling you right now, I'm selling my season tickets. I'm going to give Johnny Depp my tickets. Leonardo DiCaprio wants my tickets. He can have them. I am not going to stand for this great moment last night in Laker history. Folks, they lost to a number three seed Portland on the road in the opener in LeBron's first game with new players.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Ooh. They lost to the Rockets down by one in the fourth. Ooh. And last night, they went to overtime, lead, and then lost to the Spurs. You know, a dynasty for a decade in the league. Ooh, 0.3. No, no. What happened last night if you're Magic in LeBron, you wake up this morning and you feel good.
Starting point is 00:12:48 In 2018, the NBA is a guard wing league. I grew up, the NBA was a center league. Didn't have them. Didn't win titles. Wilt, Kareem, Shaq. You didn't have a center. You didn't win. Bird Celtics, they needed Parrish.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Magic Lakers, they needed Kareem. Then Michael Jordan came along and the rules changed. Now it's a guard wing league. It is a guard wing league. The Lakers like their wings, Kuzma, Ingram, and LeBron. What they don't know where they are unsettled is gone. guard. That's why they brought in Rondo. Rondo's not a long-term fit. Rondo couldn't get along with a game plan sheet. He couldn't get along with a bar stool. He couldn't get along with a
Starting point is 00:13:35 team towel. He can't get along with himself, six teams, five years. Rondo's not the answer long-term. He's the answer for a year. But last night, two Laker guards, both drafted last year. Lonzo Ball has now hit seven threes in two games. And Josh Hart is way. better than everybody thought. Here's a play last night from Lonzo Ball, who now, off and off season, he couldn't play because of a surgery.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Looks like they got a dude. And they finally do. Double-teamed in trouble. Passes up, Lonzo. Here comes LeBron on the sequence. Wow. Folks, every night this year is an audition. They're in the discovery phase,
Starting point is 00:14:30 who can play with LeBron. That's what this season is. It's not about the title. They're auditioning players. Who can fit with LeBron? Lance Stevenson's not here in three years. He may not be here last, next year. Rondo's not here in three years.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Javeo McGee's not here in two years. Michael Beasley's probably not here by the trading deadline. I'm not sure if Rondo will be. This is about auditioning with LeBron. And they know Cusman last night, big night. They know Ingram can play. Lakers know they got forward. that can play with LeBron.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Where they're unsettled is guard. And Rondo's out. And Lonzo came in. And Lonzo's hitting threes. Seven and two games leads the team. They got to wake up this morning and love that. And Josh Hart, everybody whiffed on him. Everybody in the league, whiffed on him.
Starting point is 00:15:22 So LeBron's got two young guards that can play, only getting better. Two forwards. Kuzma last night forced into duty because of Ingram scored, what, 36? you wake up this morning these are good auditions you're doing a Broadway play you just found actors you got guys you can play who cares they lost
Starting point is 00:15:40 the number three seed Portland in Portland who cares they lost in overtime to San Antonio who cares they were down one to Houston and lost they should lose to those teams LeBron said chill process we good here I know what I got myself into
Starting point is 00:15:55 it's a process I get it and we'll be fine so I didn't come here thinking we were going to be, you know, blazing storms, you know, right out the gate. It's a process, and I understand that. So, you know, the game is, you know, frustrating not to get the wind, but I've showered and I'm good now. He's showered, by the way. LeBron has showered.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Coming up next, we are seeing something here, and this is what accountants do, and it's what good NFL GMs do. And we saw it yesterday with the Cowboys. That's in LA next in the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeard Radio app. Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson stopping by our show live in 20 minutes. Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Second time he's been on this show in a couple of months. Drew Breeze stopped by. Star quarterbacks. Love them when they stopped by. Drew Breeze, Russell Wilson. and Russ going to be joining us here in about 20 minutes. Anybody out there, an accountant or anybody out there, you know, you don't do your own taxes, you would have an accountant.
Starting point is 00:17:08 An accountant's job is essentially to monitor the ever-changing tax laws. And as they change, it's an accountant's job to take advantage of the changes, to find areas they can save you money. Okay. Not everybody has an accountant. Some people do their own taxes, but even if you're doing your own taxes, you've got to pay a attention to changing tax laws. This is what makes a good baseball GM, a good football GM, and a good basketball GM. To be ahead of the curve, to be an early adapter, watching rule changes.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Because rule changes will change how certain players play. It'll change the flow of the game. I'll give you an example. Before the season started this year, I said, number one, bet the overs. And that's happened. There's going to be a lot more scoring in the league. I kept saying this is going to be a big offensive year. Not only do we get some star quarterbacks off injury,
Starting point is 00:18:02 but the catch rule's been flipped. The helmet rule has been brought in, amplified. It's going to be a good year for wide receivers. Those two major rule changes and what started happening. We started seeing these teams pay huge money for receivers. All sorts of teams. Sammy Watkins got that money, Tavon Austin, Brandon Cooks, OBJ. Again, this is what an accountant is,
Starting point is 00:18:27 does, constantly looking for law changes in taxes. This is what good GMs do. They're looking for rule changes in sports. My point is, Amari Cooper is worth more today than three years ago. Because of the last 12 months, the NFL's change rules. He is simply more valuable today. And let me give you an example. Look at the division leaders currently in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:18:53 in the AFC, New England, Pittsburgh, Houston, Kansas City. All of them either have the best perimeter weapons in the league in their division, or you can argue it. Now, New England didn't, then they brought on Josh Gordon with Edelman. So New England, Pittsburgh, Houston, and Kansas City. By the way, second place in the AFC West of Kansas City is the Chargers. They're also loaded at the perimeter positions. Let's go to the NFC. Who's got the best perimeter weapons in the NFC West?
Starting point is 00:19:28 Rams lead the division. NFC North. Vikings lead the division. NFC South. Saints in Atlanta. Atlanta's a mess. They're all beat up. But the Saints arguably lead the division.
Starting point is 00:19:38 The only team in the NFL that leads their division without premier perimeter players is Washington. And I would say most people are cynical of Washington leading the division and holding that for the next six weeks. I'm in the rare camp where I like Washington, not as much as Philly, but I like Washington. Also, think about this. This is from Bill Barnwell, a writer in terms of the trait. He does a lot of analytics and deep diving. He said, Amari Cooper has been targeted only 32 times this year, but he's averaged three and a half yards of separation on throws of six or more yards downfield. So not bubble screens,
Starting point is 00:20:17 downfield, three and a half yards of separation. That's the best rate in the National Football League. So the general managers, the accountants in sports who are early adapters, baseball, Cubs, Red Sox, Astros, Dodgers. NBA, Golden State,
Starting point is 00:20:36 Boston, Houston, early adapters. Okay, Amari Cooper today is worth more than he was two years ago. Bucky Brooks on our show last week talked about this. Right now it's about the three piece. Passers, playmakers, and pass catchers.
Starting point is 00:20:52 On offense, you have to be able to score points. We have seen teams like the New England Patriots get to the Super Bowl repeatedly with a great quarterback and average defense that can play situational football and win games. Teams are no longer investing big money in defensive stars because they know you can outscore people and win significant games. Yeah, I mean, this weekend, the Bears great defense. Patriots up and down the field. Houston's defensive front.
Starting point is 00:21:21 It hasn't been that dominant. Saxonville can't win games. Denver, they're not leading their division. I mean, folks, rule changes. There are no great defenses. I mean, Baltimore's it, and they just lost it home to the Saints because they couldn't stop the Saints. So this is the world we live in.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Joy Taylor with the News. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Herd Line News. There's some stuff going on in Oakland. So after the departures of Khalil Mack and now Amari Cooper, the Raiders and Derek Carr may also be heading towards a split. According to Marcus Thompson of the Athletic and the team, amongst the team, let me tell a story.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Team sources describe a fractured relationship between Carr and his teammates, mostly because confidence in him has waned. It certainly didn't help when film showed what looked like him crying after being sacked and injuring his arm. It's hard to see how Carr can lead the team again. There are already rumblings about Carr being a sitting duck. His game is marked by mental fragility that doesn't seem to inspire confidence. So the crying thing?
Starting point is 00:22:30 What if he was in an incredible pain? Well, yeah. I've seen a lot of athletes cry. To your arm being injured and you being in pain. Sometimes you can't help that. But Carr has responded directly to the report on Twitter. His brother Darren responded and defended him with a list of all of his career injuries.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Yeah. And Derek Carr wrote, don't even waste your time with this big bro on the ground. I yelled, get me up, get me up. Then I got to the silent, yelled again, not one tier, not one time. There's the truth.
Starting point is 00:23:00 People will click on it because it sounds crazy, but stop playing with me. And he also tweeted, I'm a raider. It's not a popular thing to be right now, but I am and I love it. I love the struggle of trying to fight back for our city when not a lot of people believe in us.
Starting point is 00:23:12 People can try all they want to tear us apart, but it's not happening to the real ones. Let me tell you something. If the Raiders are bailing on Derek Carr, Let me ask you a question. The players. Well, then I'd get rid of some of these players because he's the only one that changes games for them
Starting point is 00:23:26 now that Cleo Mac and a Mario are gone. Let me ask you this. Could the Giants use Derek Carr? Could Miami use Derek Carr? Could Jacksonville use Derek Carr? Could Cincinnati use Derek Carr? If that little moment with Derek Carr is the reason you're going to get rid of Derek Carr,
Starting point is 00:23:41 I can go off the top of my head. If I was Tennessee, Derek Carr-Marcus Mario-Ota, I take Derek Carr. There are minimum of Denver right now. that Denver defense with Derek Carr, like if you're bailing on Derek Carr, do so at your own peril. I do find it strange that things have fallen apart
Starting point is 00:23:57 so quickly with Derek Carr, at least publicly. Like maybe internally, this is all really resolved and not a big deal. I do find it difficult to believe that the entire team has just been like, oh, this guy cried,
Starting point is 00:24:11 can't leave a team like that. Like, there's not that much ridiculous, toxic masculinity in these situations. Like, if you're armed, sometimes just, People break their arms. Like, I'm not saying his arms broken, but it hurts. Like, and then you cry.
Starting point is 00:24:23 It's not like he's out there crying because he's upset. Maybe he was crying because he's in pain. Or maybe he just didn't cry at all. Who knows? Like, he's, it's crygate. He's out here defending whether he cried or not. It's insane. So when they traded Khalil Mack, that didn't split the locker room,
Starting point is 00:24:41 but a one second video at Derek Carr crying, and everybody's bailing on Derek Carr. Is the backup for that team, Connor Cook? Is that who the backup is for the Raiders? Because I'm not, if you think, okay, so you don't think Derek Carr's going to lead you. Go look at the depth chart at quarterback for the Raiders. I could be wrong on this.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Is it Connor Cook? I don't know who it is. That's even a bigger problem. I don't know. It's so crazy. Who is it? Who is? Oh, it's A.J. McCarran.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Okay. All right. Go for it. All right. Yeah, Bengals' bills are like pass. But everybody likes AJ McCarran. All right. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:25:19 All right. So Adam Schafter dropped a bomb yesterday and reported that Patrick Peterson had requested a trade from the Cardinals. And Steve Wilkes, who met with the media after the tweet, said trading Peterson is not going to happen. Oh, no. We're not trading Patrick. That's out of the question. Patrick was here today.
Starting point is 00:25:37 He hasn't spoken to me about it at all. Had a pretty good practice, you know, no concerns whatsoever. And my status is still the same what I said before. I disagree with that. and I'll tell you why later, but I would move Patrick Peterson for the right piece, and the right piece is the one to the left of Josh Rosen at tackle. They better get that offensive line fixed because he can't take the beating that Cam took coming into this league, the Big Ben took coming into this league, that Sam Darnold's going to take,
Starting point is 00:26:06 that Andrew Luck is going to take, but Josh Rosen's already hurt. Yeah, exactly. Like, you dropped a quarterback in the first round. Move three picks for your number one. For your number one answer. You kind of want to get somebody to protect him and give him a fighting chance. So finally, the Lakers dropped to 0-N-3 last night. As you mentioned, the beginning of the show, they lost the spurs in overtime.
Starting point is 00:26:27 LeBron scored five points in overtime with three assists. But his two misses at the free throw line with 12.8 seconds remaining. Pretty big deal. He went to the line with the Lakers clinging to a 142-141 lead. Yeah. But went 0 for 2 from the line and the clutch. And according to ESPN stats and info, In the final 15 seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime,
Starting point is 00:26:51 LeBron is 10 for 21 or 48% on free throws in one score game since the start of last season. That's the worst free throw percentage of any player with at least 10 attempts in those situations. Okay. That sounds like a lot of – well, players, 10 attempts, a second left. Bottom line, do you want LeBron on your team or not? I do want LeBron on my team. I do not want LeBron on the free throw line in the clutch. I do not.
Starting point is 00:27:13 By the way, there's been a lot of players that I don't want on the free throw line. and late. Shaq, Tim Duncan, LeBron James. I don't want to... Shack is the notoriously worst for the shooter all time. That's what I'm saying. A lot of great players, I don't want at the line. James Hardin, I wanted the line. Yes. But there's a lot of guys
Starting point is 00:27:30 I didn't want at the line. Larry Bird I wanted at the line, but it's... Listen, bottom line is he's a power forward. Let's never forget what he is. He's a power forward who has moved around to become like a point forward. He's a 6-9-260 guy.
Starting point is 00:27:46 generally I want guard shooting free throws late. So if that's the knock on LeBron, that you know, 10 games, 0.1 left, a one-point lead in April. Have you going to give me all these qualifiers? Yeah, you're right. He's probably not the guy. I mean, it's not that many qualifiers. At the end of the game, he's basically 48% from a free throw in the last season.
Starting point is 00:28:08 All right. I'll still take him. I will still take him on the floor. Yeah, I want him on the floor. I just don't want him on the field line. like saying, you know, this Porsche, you can have it. But the air conditioning's not the best in the industry. If you're going to give me a Porsche, I'd take it.
Starting point is 00:28:24 In the end, he's not great with the second left, trailing by nine on rainy days in the Staples Center. I can deal with it. Joy of the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. For the record, Derek Carr broke his back and missed two weeks. So for everybody that said...
Starting point is 00:28:42 It's so weird. Like, Derek Carr is not somebody that... When I think of someone who is soft, Derek Carr is not someone that comes to mind. In fact, it's the opposite. He's been beat up so much. Yes. I mean, like, let's stop on Derek Carr. That's not the issue for the Raiders.
Starting point is 00:28:55 All right, so I'm watching the Giants last night. By the way, Blazing Five went four and one. Not that you care, but I told you take the Giants and the points. So we were four and one in Blazing Five. Eli Manning had a pretty good stat line and blah, blah, blah. They lost. Stats are overrated. I didn't think Eli was great.
Starting point is 00:29:10 But at 2018, you can put up big numbers. Here's what jumped out to me. Left tackle Nate Soldier. Patriots had him, let him go. That's become a turnstile. Cornerback Malcolm Butler, according to a story in recent weeks, is statistically the worst corner in the NFL so far. I'm not going to sit here and bash Eli Manning.
Starting point is 00:29:33 It's over. He steps into pockets. He steps into sacks. He literally has lost his pocket awareness. It's over for Eli. I'm not going to sit here and beat up on him. He's a nice kid. but I'm watching New England's offense right now.
Starting point is 00:29:47 Danny M. Andola let him go. Dionne Lewis let him go. Those two have combined for two touchdowns all year. Nate Solder let him go. He's a revolving door at left tackle. Also, by the way, New England gets a compensatory third round pick for Nate Soder since he left him. So there's that.
Starting point is 00:30:06 I mean, I'm out of words to discuss how New England manipulates this league. It is amazing. Everybody in the NFL overpays for Belichick's players. If I was sitting in my office in the NFL and I saw the phone ring and the secretary said, Bill Belichick's on the line. I'd be like, tell him I'm vacationing in Guam for the next year. I'm not taking the call. I mean, outside of Wes Welker, who leaves and does well?
Starting point is 00:30:39 And that was Welker going to Peyton Manning. So, you know, you would expect a receiver with Payton. Peyton Manning to do well for a couple years. But when New England says, hey, we're done with a guy, don't take their phone calls. When New England's done with a guy, the guy is done. Now, Jimmy Garapolo, obviously, that's well documented. Belichick wanted to keep him. So don't use Garapolo, the outlier of a guy that left.
Starting point is 00:31:06 Chandler Jones has done pretty well, but he's not helping Arizona win. And New England didn't want to pay him a fortune. but I mean yeah the free agents that leave New England they bomb like all the time like it's just it's just the reality
Starting point is 00:31:23 of it Malcolm Butler can't play Belichick was right Nate Solder overvalued Belichick was right and Dion Lewis not worth the money Belichick was right and Nanny O Mandova not worth the money Belichick was right I mean if New England's calling you and it's a free agent situation do not
Starting point is 00:31:39 answer the phone Just don't. Because when New England's done with them, they're done. What about Brandon Cooks? What about him? He's like the fifth to seventh most valuable ram offensive player. And that was a trade. They got something, you know, for him.
Starting point is 00:31:58 But when it comes to free agents, just don't answer the phone. Nate, we can bang Eli this morning, but Nate's older, turnstile, left tackle. And myself included, I'm like, wow. Brady's old, left tackle. What are you doing? Actually, they again made the right call. We have great stuff today. Top of the next hour, 30 minutes away, the herd hierarchy,
Starting point is 00:32:22 some shuffling with the herd hierarchy, top 10 teams in the league, Peter King, Trent Dilfer. But coming up next, going to be a first belt hall famer. My guy, Russell Wilson, Seahawk quarterback, is right around the corner. By the way, breaking news, the New York's Giants, just traded cornerback Eli Apple to the New Orleans Saints. Hey, an Apple acquired a day keeps the doctor away. Anyway, in 2016, everybody's banging on the Cowboys because they gave up a first round pick for Amari Cooper.
Starting point is 00:32:50 Amari Cooper can play. Okay, Mari Cooper can play. We already got three guys from the 2016 draft. Eli Apple traded. Corey Coleman traded. Paxton Lynch traded. I think Paxton Lynch has released. My bet.
Starting point is 00:33:03 He's working at a Quiznos. The point being is Amari Cooper can play. Amari Cooper can play. Cowboys got a guy that can play. 25 to 30% of these first round guys get hurt, can't play, disruptive, don't fit. I mean, if you can give me an absolute guy who can fit, I like the absolute guy who can play. Cowboys got a left tackle, they got a running bat, they got good defensive players, they got their franchise guy they think.
Starting point is 00:33:29 They go ahead and get a receiver. Who can play? I think sometimes we freak out about, you know, oh, we gave up this pick and you give up that pick. be careful about picks. Picks are like winning the lottery. If you don't know what to do with the money, half the lottery winners go broke. Having a lot of money doesn't mean anything if you don't know what to do with the money. Having all the draft picks doesn't mean anything unless you're good at drafting players. Some teams aren't very good at it.
Starting point is 00:33:54 Bill Pollyan was great at it. Bill Pollyan, Hall of Fame career, Buffalo, Indianapolis, nailed his first round picks. It's a who's who of Hall of Famers. I mean, even as good as Pete Carroll is, he's missed on some first round picks. These first round picks aren't guaranteed. Amari Cooper is guaranteed. to come in and be good day one. I would project Amari Cooper is, in my opinion, Amari Cooper with Dallas.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Now, it's going to take a couple weeks, obviously. You've got to fit into the offense. Amari Cooper to me is the kind of guy that can give you 60 to 65 catches a year in Dallas's offense. And if he can give you half a dozen touchdowns, four to six touchdowns, if I got three years of Amari Cooper and I got 180 catches and 15 touchdowns, I'd sign it right now. one of my all-time favorite guys in the NFL. I see him as a first ballot Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 00:34:41 We're already four Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl win in seven years and two Super Bowl trips. He's my guy via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Russell Wilson is joining us. You know, Russ, I thought this was going to be a re- Colin, what's up, bud? How are you doing? Great to see you. I thought it was going to be a rebuilding year for you guys.
Starting point is 00:34:57 I saw you're running for your life last year. But Russell, you guys are pounding the ball. You've stuck and you're staying with this offensive line. it feels like it's not a rebuilding year for you on that offense. Take me through kind of the change. You become kind of a running team first, it feels like to me. Yeah, you know, I think the biggest thing for us is we want to be physical at the point of attack. And I think that obviously with Dwayne Brown being here for full time,
Starting point is 00:35:27 all year, he's arguably the best left tackle in football. You know, the addition of guys of the guard positions of J.R. Sweezy's back. Super Bowl champion. We got DJ Fluker, 360 pounds, as big as it can be. And then Justin Britt in the center. And then, Fetty's doing a great job at the right tackle position. And those guys are leading the way for us and giving us enough time to make throws, giving us enough time to be physical at the point of attack in the running
Starting point is 00:35:52 game. And we have so much versatility. I give a lot of, you know, that credit to, you know, obviously coach Schadenheimer. He's done a tremendous job. Shottie has done a great job of mixing it up. And, and coach Mike Solari has done a great job, too. He's one of the best offensive line coaches in the game. and he's done it for so many years with so many great teams, and we're glad that he's coaching for us. You know, I said a couple years ago,
Starting point is 00:36:13 I thought they should have built around you more, not the defense, a few years ago, because I thought you were a kind of a transformational talent in a once-in-a-lifetime pick. So they initially built around the Leeds in a boom. Well, come on, those guys have left. Defensive guys don't have the impact of offensive guys. Now they feel like they're doing a little bit of a run-first offense.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Do you ever sit there drive home and think, know, I'm over here. First, we were defense. Now we're running game. Does it ever, are there ever days you think to yourself, I'd like to be more of a focal point of the offense? You know what I love? I love winning. And whatever it takes to win, that's my obsession, you know, and you come to work every day. And there's no satisfaction if you don't win the game. And so I think we're doing everything we can to put a great product out there every time on the field and set the tone every time you step onto the field. So our defense is playing lights out right now. You know,
Starting point is 00:37:06 Bradman Dugals making plays all over the field. Obviously, the loss of Earl was a heavy hitter to us because Earl is, you know, Hall of Fame player, you know, such a great guy, such a great teammate. To lose him was tough. But then just to step in, Tedri Tobson doing a great job. The Griffin Brothers making plays all over the field. Bobby Wagner leading the defense. And then offensively, we want to be explosive in so many different ways, you know.
Starting point is 00:37:28 And we feel like we're just getting started. We feel like we're really rolling right now. And there's a lot more to do. We just had our bye week and we got really 10 weeks to go to see who we really are and to show who we really can be. And I'm excited about that opportunity one week at a time. Russell Wilson, seven years for Pro Bowl's already a Super Bowl trophy. You know, the rules have changed. And I have said that I believe that quarterbacks have to constantly adapt to new rules.
Starting point is 00:37:56 And receivers do and coaches do and coordinators do. So I don't have a problem with defensive linemen having to adapt to new rules. and not drive quarterbacks into the ground. Some people have said the game's too soft. When I watch NFL football, soft is never a word I think. What do you make of the new rules, defensive linemen, and sacking quarterback rules? Well, you know, I think that one of the things is, you know, first of all, the idea is to protect the game and protect the, you know, the quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:38:27 and everything else, especially shots to the head and stuff like that. But, you know, you don't want to take away from the physicality. You know, that's why I love this game. This game is physical. This game is tough. It's not for everybody. You know, and the reality is if it didn't want to get hit, you know, I should be playing a different sport. You know, I may have to work on my tennis career or something like that. But the reality is, you know, I put the suit on, I put the shoulder pads on, the pads on, everything else to get ready to place a tough game. And that's the reality of this game. It's hard as it gets.
Starting point is 00:38:57 And some of the greatest athletes in the world, you know, are playing this game. So it's never going to be a soft game by any means and it shouldn't be. You just had a buy week and it comes, you want to have your buy week in like week 7, 8, 9. That's where everybody says you need your buy week. And you just got your buy week. What does a veteran quarterback, and that is you now, in a buy week? What does a team do? Do you add plays?
Starting point is 00:39:21 Is it about getting healthy? Is it about rest? What did you guys do in the buy week? Because I think you're not a rookie quarterback. You're not Sam Darnold. You know the offense. You're the focal point. What did you do in the last seven to ten days?
Starting point is 00:39:35 Well, that's critical. We just flew back from London. Had an amazing experience from London. Obviously, winning a big game there in an amazing environment, 90,000 people going crazy. It was pretty cool. Come back all away from that trip. And then, you know, I think the biweek is really a time one, like you said, resting, getting your body ready, making sure you're getting the proper sleep and everything else,
Starting point is 00:39:54 and making sure that you're taking care of your body, making sure, you know, it's kind of like a, you know, F1 formula car. You know, you got to make sure it's ready to roll for the rest of the season. And so you got to make sure you keep treating it. I think also, too, as well as mentally, you want to be able to, one, relax, but also to be able to think through, okay, what went really well and what could we do better? And I think those are the things that you study. You have to be passionate about studying that part of it and really diving into the details of where we can continue to grow and continue to get better.
Starting point is 00:40:23 You know, where are the game-altering plays that we capitalize on and where can they be? and then also, like you said, everybody else who hasn't been able to play that much, we got some guys coming back, which is going to be exciting. You know, guys like KJ. Wright, you know, some of the other people too as well. That's going to be huge for us, you know, so that's critical. Yeah, and I like your schedule how it sets up. By the way, Brady is known for taking care of himself, but I follow you on Twitter. You've been a guy that's been into wellness from day one in this league.
Starting point is 00:40:50 You have been the West Coast version of Brady, and now you and Brady are actually both endorsing the molecule bed, which sounds wildly complex. We've got a minute here. What is it? Yeah, it was pretty cool. We're business partners on it. I think obviously Brady's been known for his recovery and his sleep, and he's done such an amazing job at it. I don't know. He thinks 41 years old and still balling doing this thing. I think for me, I've been from day one since I got into the National Football League. That's always been an important part for me is to make sure I'm taking care of my body. The one thing I haven't been great at, Conlin, to be honest with you, is my sleep. And so, You know, now having two kids, I've got to get more sleep.
Starting point is 00:41:30 You know, I got to make sure that I'm getting my rest, getting my recovery. And I think that's huge. So, you know, we're business partners on molecule mattress. It's been amazing. You know, it's really the idea is the focus on the airflow of the mattress and getting, you know, you're a restorative recovery, which is critical. So I always say there's no time to sleep. But, you know, it's really critical when you do get a chance to sleep, making sure you're resting. As busy as we are, as early mornings you get up at 5.30 ready to roll, you got to make sure you're getting, you know, good quality sleep.
Starting point is 00:41:57 And so, like I said, when you had two kids running around, it's important. So I think it's been a huge part and a huge thing that I've really kind of dived into, you know, the past year of my life, past year and a half, really focusing on that part of it. Yeah. I've always done the extra training. I've always, you know, done the PT work and everything else. But now it's, you know, the nutrition side of it and also the sleep side of it's always critical. So, you know, molecule matches doing so many amazing things. It's good to be a part of it.
Starting point is 00:42:24 And I think it's helping, I think it's going to help my career for the next. 15 years. Russell, great talking to you, man. Good luck. You play the Rams in three weeks. Detroit's next. Thanks, bud. Thank you, buddy. It's always a pleasure. Go Hawks. All right. Go Hawks. They play Detroit next. L.A. in three weeks. They're not really a rebuilding team. They came off a buy week, which is perfect. Heard hierarchy, by the way, top of next hour. It's hard this week because there's a lot of good teams. There are a lot of good teams, and I'll tell you up front, I have the Seahawks 11.
Starting point is 00:42:54 I sneak a team in here and I'm almost doing it out of respect. I'm not sure they're a top 10 team but I do like what they've done and I'm tipping my cap to an NFL player in Herd hierarchy today. I'm not sure they're a top 10 team. I'm not sure they are.
Starting point is 00:43:12 But I'm going to put them in there anywhere. They've deserved it. Heard hierarchy and why a coach has to have a game plan when he goes to the podium next. Hour 2 live in Los Angeles. This is the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:43:31 And right here, FS1, Joy Taylor, is joining me for hour to Peter King coming up this hour. Chris Haynes with it the Laker game last night. Good dude, one of our guys, Yahoo Sports Insider, he'll join us in about 40 minutes. Peter King in about 15 minutes. Hurt hierarchy in about three minutes. It is great to have you in a Tuesday today. It is great. I could talk about the Giants' loss.
Starting point is 00:43:51 What's the point? That game was boring. That game was boring. It was not on Fox, so, you know, what's the point of even watching? All right. So here's what's funny. Baseball's got 162 games. And so a manager can come up after a game, say something, and it disappears into the ether, game the next day.
Starting point is 00:44:12 NBA, hockey, 82 games. We don't micro-analyze what coaches say. But in football, it's different. In football, there's one game a week, college and pro. So when you go to the microphone, that comment is going to live for a week. That's going to be your moment for a week for guys like me, people like Joy to Microanalysis. In baseball, hell is a game the next day. Basketball hockey game in two days.
Starting point is 00:44:40 But you've got to have a plan when you go to the podium in the NFL. Doug Peterson, and rambling doesn't sum it up, went to the podium, Eagles coach, and did not have a plan. Yeah, there's probably the pressure should be off. We shouldn't have any pressure going into football games. Even though, listen, every game, don't misunderstand. There's pressure with every football game, okay? Pressure to win. There's all of that.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Sometimes players, coaches, teams put pressure on themselves when they don't have to. You know what I mean? To make a play. When you win games? Now, he should have stopped right about there. Oh, but he's not done talking. That was a good 17-second soundbubon. But he's got more to talk about.
Starting point is 00:45:24 So now we're going to sit here and scrutinize every little thing when these things were not being, you know, we were actually making these plays a year ago. You know what I'm saying? He could have stopped right there. So now we're going to sit here. Again, you could stop right there. I got two great sound bites. This guy is still talking and still just talking.
Starting point is 00:45:43 Yeah, we can go back and use that as fuel, as emotion, but it's a different team, different year. We're in this situation. We've kind of dug ourselves in a little bit of a hole. and the great thing about where we... Cut! Cut! Doug! Stop talking! Oh, he's not done. We've got, what, nine games? Okay, just, I can't take it anymore.
Starting point is 00:46:10 He did not have a plan. Okay, you got a plan on Sunday. Got to have a plan on Monday. And Chris Carter talked about this this morning on first things first. You've got to be... That puppy's going to live in Philadelphia. That's going to be micro analyzed for a week. He reminds me of a coach who you listen to the press conferences,
Starting point is 00:46:31 and he says some crazy stuff, and it was Rex Ryan. He didn't have the Super Bowl resume, though. Now, imagine some of the sound bites that came out. I used to be like, I know that guy knows football. Now, I know Doug Peterson knows football. But what a lot of these guys don't know, they don't know how to be a head coach. And there's a reason why Bill Belichick has the most simple answers
Starting point is 00:46:51 at the press conference. The reason he has a plan. He has a plan when he goes into the press conference. That is a coach that did not have a plan going into the press conference. No, he did not. That's why when you don't have a plan and you're not composed, you become history. Networks like Fox Sports, FS1, the place I used to work. We just put it on a reel and bring it up all the time.
Starting point is 00:47:16 Here's some coaches that didn't have a plan. We don't even have anything that compares to this in baseball. hockey or basketball. Playoffs, don't talk about it. Playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game. This is what the greatest thing about sports is. You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game.
Starting point is 00:47:46 You don't play to just play it. There's three quarterbacks on this football team. Whichever one starts, whichever one's don't will back him up. Period. Cut and dry. It's nobody's concern but ours. Nobody's. Next. Mike, why are you in such a bad move? What do you care? The bears are who we thought they were.
Starting point is 00:48:06 That's why we took the damn field. Now, if you want to crown them, then crown their ass. But they are who we thought they were, and we let them off the hook. Come after me! I'm a man! I'm 40! Who's the kid here? Are you kidding me? That's all I got to say. It makes me want to pee.
Starting point is 00:48:26 The guy that called us a fraud. Ask Alabama if we're a fraud. Was his name Colin Coward? I never met him, don't know him. Ask him if we're Alabama for a fraud. Ask Ohio State if we're a fraud. Ask Oklahoma if we're a fraud. The only fraud is that guy.
Starting point is 00:48:42 Because he didn't do his homework. I hope y'all print that. See, that's what happens if you don't have a plan. You start rambling, incoherently rambling, just making silly stuff up. But, yeah, that thing with Doug Peterson, that's going to last in Philly for a week. I told you about Doug Peterson yesterday. He's just talking. He's just talking.
Starting point is 00:49:00 He's just getting mad because they're asking why he's not running the ball. He's got to get better at the podium. All right, here we go. It's a top 10 teams. Heard hierarchy. I don't know why I put so much time into this, but I do. I care. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:49:14 Heard hierarchy. Time is now. Let's go. The top 10 NFL teams, according to college. Number 10. I was so blown away by Carolina's come from behind win in Philadelphia. And Cam Newton now has two touchdown passes, two plus in five straight games. He's never done that.
Starting point is 00:49:32 I've always liked their defense. Front seven, it's now getting healthy. They're fourth in rushing and their fourth and third down defense. But to go on the road and to overcome a deficit, when Philadelphia knows you've got to throw the ball, I thought Cam showed leadership. I thought the Eagles got tight and give careful. Carolina, the number 10 spot. Number 9.
Starting point is 00:49:52 I don't think Washington's a top 10 team, but I've got to tip my cap to Alex Smith. Alex Smith goes to San Francisco. Harbaugh shows up and he wins a bunch of games and they replace him. And he goes to Kansas City and wins a bunch of games and they replace him. And now he goes to Washington and they leave the division by a couple of games. And they probably want to replace him in the draft. I mean, listen, they only have five turnovers all year, second in the NFL. That's directly attributed to Alex Smith.
Starting point is 00:50:19 is that the fact that Washington, with a lack of brand new quarterback, lost Sean McVeigh a couple years ago, lost our receivers, dealing with injuries, tough division, and they have now beaten Aaron Rogers, Carson Wentz, and Cam Newton this year. I'm putting them in my top 10, number nine. Number eight. Watch out for Minnesota. Uh-oh.
Starting point is 00:50:42 Uh-oh, they're playing defense again. They now have the best third-down defense in the NFL. Giving the ball back to Kirk Cousins, Stefan Diggs, stealing. Watch out. During their three-game winning streak, they're only allowing 18 points a game. I may not love Kirk Cousins, but I like Kirk Cousins, and Case Keenum won 13 with his talent, and Kirk's better than Case Keenum. Here come the Vikings number eight.
Starting point is 00:51:14 Number seven. Love Baltimore, still love them. Still think it's a potential Super Bowl team, despite the, lost, they're still number one in sacks, number one in total defense, they're number one in points per game allowed. They've allowed fewer than 25 points in six of their seven games. They don't have a road game in November, baby. They don't have to grab a suitcase now. In November, it gets cold. It is loud in Baltimore. In November, I got the Ravens at seven. Number six. Steelers one slot ahead of them, and Labian Bell is going to show up. You
Starting point is 00:51:49 do get that, right? It's going to happen here in about two weeks. The one thing they do, they're second in the NFL in sacks. If you get to the quarterback in 2018, and you've got a good quarterback with weapons in 2018, you can win the Super Bowl. Now, they also lead the NFL in penalty yards, and they're a little noisy, and they're a little dysfunctional. But I'm going to get Labian Bell back, and this is a guy that can carry the rock 250 times, catch it 80 times, and they've already got weapons and they're going to get that weapon added. I got the Steelers at six.
Starting point is 00:52:20 Number five. L.A. Chargers, you're not watching them. I mean, I know only 25,000 people go to their games. They played over in London. Joey Bosa, this defense is now rolling, and that's without Joey Bosa. And he's expected to return after the buy week. And they have tremendous, tremendous perimeter receivers.
Starting point is 00:52:42 Philip Rivers has time. In their four-game winning streak, They're allowing 17 and a half points a game. And again, their best defensive player, Joey Bosa, isn't playing now. Watch out for the Chargers. Number four. Kansas City. I still don't love this defense.
Starting point is 00:52:59 Now, they're going to get Eric Berry back, and that's a big deal. Most safeties, I don't give a rip about. They are getting Eric Barry back, and they are number one in points. They are number two in point differential. They're number three in total offense, and they have one of the great game play designers in football. there's a lot to like about Kansas City. But I got to see this defense make plays because that game in Foxborough, that's playoff football.
Starting point is 00:53:22 Like, you're going to face the best coaches and the best quarterbacks once you get to January and that Foxborough loss and the ease in which New England moved the ball up and down the field is a concern. Number three. New England, you could put them at one. I'll put them at three. I still don't love their pass rush. And I think that's going to be their undoing later in the year at some point.
Starting point is 00:53:41 But they're the first team to score 35 plus points in four straight games since the 2014 Cowboys. In their last four games, they are a machine. 39 a game, 4 and 0, number one in the league in first downs, 6 yards, 8 yards, 5 yards, 6 yards. And I'll tell you this, Josh Gordon acquisition is really, really interesting. Because they're good up the seam with Gronk. They're good Edelman. They're good James White to catch. Okay, they've solidified their left tackle.
Starting point is 00:54:13 The question is, Brady's had very few dependable deep threats. I'm telling you, Josh Gordon made a play this weekend. Caught it, broke tackles, head down. Keep your eye on Josh Gordon. He is a difference maker if he can stay clean. Number two. Saints. Okay, they lost in week one at home to Tampa, and we kind of bailed on them.
Starting point is 00:54:33 Then they struggled with Cleveland. They've only got one loss. And by the way, going to Baltimore and winning that game was really, really impressive. And here's the other thing. Through the years, when you think of the Saints, you think of offense. They're number one right now in past defense, or in run defense, excuse me. So the number one in the NFL and run defense, that's why they just acquired Eli Apple from the Giants today. Because they know that the only way to attack them, the flaw in this team is past defense. And because they're so good offensively, teams trail and have to catch up throwing the ball.
Starting point is 00:55:04 That's why the Saints went out and got Eli Apple today. Like, you can't run on them. And they can run on you, and they can pass on you. They are better cornerback away from being the best team in football Saints at number two. Number one. Listen, what do you want me to say here? Rams are 7 and 0, number one in the league and point differential. They don't have any elite, consistent pass rush,
Starting point is 00:55:28 but kicker, punter, quarterback, left tackle, center, receivers, interior defense, corners, safety, coach, coordinator, they're just really good. By the way, this is an interesting. You know who leads the NFL in sacks? Aaron Donald. He's an interior defensive lineman. It's not Cleo Mac.
Starting point is 00:55:50 It's not Bond Miller. An interior defensive lineman. Well, he's earning that contract. I mean, Aaron Donald's going to finish with like 18 sacks or 20 sacks. It's like, what? That's not the way it works in the NFL. It's supposed to be the outside guys.
Starting point is 00:56:06 It's going to change now, though. That's going to be the trend moving forward. Well, they got it done. Your linemen are going to get to the quarterback more quickly because the quarterbacks are trying to get it out more quickly. There's my herd hierarchy. By the way, I have Seahawks at 11 and bears at 12. And, you know, this week was tough.
Starting point is 00:56:21 I felt I had to give the Redskins credit. I got to get Alex Smith credit. He won in San Francisco, they bail. He wanted Kansas City, they bail. He goes to Washington. They leave the division. I mean, at some point, we're going to look up in about seven years and look at Alex Smith's numbers. How come everybody kept trading him?
Starting point is 00:56:37 All he does is win everywhere he goes. San Francisco. No. Kansas State. No. Here is in Washington, winning, leading the division. Coming up next, the heat is on Jason Garrett and the Dallas Cowboys, but specifically Jason Garrett, and I'll tell you why. Coming up.
Starting point is 00:56:57 The World Series begins tonight on Fox, and game one features two of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Clayton Pershaw takes the mound with the Dodgers against Chris Sale and the Red Sox. Game one tonight, starting at 730 Eastern on Fox and the Fox Sports app. J.D. Martinez, American League MVP candidate, has faced Kershaw before and has hit him really, really well. He's their DH. Mookie Betz. It may move to second when they move it out to Los Angeles because Martinez is a D.H. Monkey Betts is the right fielder. So I do think Boston, the pitching lines up for Chris Sale and the opener over Clayton Kershaw. I think Boston's got the better team. I think it's their year. But this is really going to be a great series. You get Fenway Park. You get Dodger Stadium at night out west. It's going to look absolutely stunning.
Starting point is 00:57:40 You know, let me just say this before I get to Peter King in a second here. The NFL now in 2018 with all the rule changes, it feels like there's five positions on offense. To be an elite offense, you've got to have these five things taken care of. Number one's quarterback. Number two is an elite play caller. Number three is a left tackle. Number four is a top running back or two really good ones. And number five is a playmaker on the outside.
Starting point is 00:58:03 By acquiring Amari Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones says, okay, I got three, four, and five for sure. I got my left tackle, I got my top running back, and now I got my playmaker. And Jerry's already told us he likes DAC, so he thinks he has number one. To me, does that put more pressure on Scott Linehan, the coordinator, and Jason Garrett? Because the five, if you look at the offenses that are working in this league, they got a quarterback, the play caller, the left tackle, the running back, and the perimeter star. Well, you look at the Rams. You look at teams, Kansas City.
Starting point is 00:58:35 If, so now we know Dallas has three, four, and five. And Jerry keeps telling us Dax good. And by the way, we do have some proof rookie year when he had weapons. When he had that perimeter guy, he was 13 and 3. And Jerry tells us he loves him. So I think it puts a little pressure because Amari Cooper's going to come in here, give him a couple weeks.
Starting point is 00:58:55 He's going to cast a football. Amari Cooper's 24, only six months older than Calvin Ridley, the receiving rookie for the Atlanta Falcons. He's a really good player. I believe in Amari Cooper. Maybe not a first round pick to give up, But the Cowboys were going to use that first round pick and a receiver anyway, if you believe reports. And with that, be the Coward Global Satellite Network.
Starting point is 00:59:15 We go to Peter King, NBCSports.com. All right, size it up. I would have preferred to give away a second round pick. But listen, I just read a draft summary this morning, Peter, and they said the draft is all about offensive linemen, defensive linemen, and pass rushers. And Dallas is pretty good there. And I read a story this morning that they wanted to go get a receiver anyway. So, you know, it's not the world's best move, but it doesn't bother me much.
Starting point is 00:59:40 What did you make of it? Well, I think the move is just okay for Dallas. I think the move is excellent for the Raiders. And the reason why I think it's just okay for Dallas is that Amari Cooper is not a number one receiver. He might, people might call him that. But Amari Cooper, you know, since the start of the 2017 season, Colin, there are 64 players in the NFL who have more catches than him, and 44 players in football who have more receiving yards than him. I mean, does anybody in America know who Adam Humphreys is? He's a wide receiver
Starting point is 01:00:20 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He's got more catches than Amari Cooper since opening day 2017. So I understand why the Cowboys wanted to go get a receiver. I get it. I'd rather have had Demarius Thomas. But I get why you go and get a receiver. You really need a receiver. So that's okay. I think one is really a heavy cost for, you know, for Amari Cooper. And I agree with you. I would have much rather given a two and a six than a one.
Starting point is 01:00:53 And who knows, maybe you don't get it done given a two and a six. Do you trust Gruden? You know, the Rams gave up six picks to get golf, Eagles five to get Wants, Andy Reed three to get Mahomes. They don't regret those moves. Atlanta gave up three picks to get Julio Jones. I don't think they regret it. Are we sure Gruden's going to take advantage of this?
Starting point is 01:01:16 Is his history that he's a great personnel guy? Well, the Chiefs gave up two ones to go get Mahomes. So, I mean, I think you have to look at where you are when you go up. And they basically traded two number one picks to pick Patrick Mahomes. And that's fair. Obviously, you're going to say it's fair now because of how well he played. But I think the whole thing with the Raiders now, here they sit. And I would not be surprised if they add to that bit of draft capital before next Tuesday.
Starting point is 01:01:57 But, you know, they got five picks in the first two rounds. in the next two drafts. I'm sorry, five picks in the first round of the next two draft. And I think, Colin, what you have to ask yourself is, who's making the picks? That's number one. I mean, we don't really know what's going on internally there. Yeah. But it sounds an awful lot like Gruden is the guy who is the bottom line picker here. Yeah. But I think, I think now you also have to ask yourself the question, okay, is Gruden going to make any more big deals before the draft next April starts. Is he married to Derek Carr?
Starting point is 01:02:36 What will he do with Carl Joseph? So that's why I think that we're just not sure, and we can't be sure, until the draft kicks off next year of how many picks he's actually going to have. You know, it's funny. I read the story this morning about Patrick Peterson, Arizona. There's a rumor out there that New England, the Saints, now they just got Eli Apple, they don't need him.
Starting point is 01:02:58 But there's a Patrick Peterson may be traded. And it's really funny. When Josh Rosen came out of college, I said, I like him. But his durability, not his attitude, his durability concerns me, hurt at UCLA regularly. Okay, he's now, he's already got a broken toe with Arizona. If you told me they could get a tackle, a left tackle for Patrick Peterson, I just don't think Josh Rosen can take the beating of Andrew Luck, the beating of Cam Newton, the beating Sam Darnold could.
Starting point is 01:03:27 I don't think it's the worst idea if you move up to get Josh. Josh Rosen, Peter, that he, that's your house. You better get insurance for your house. Would you move Peterson to get a good left tackle? I don't know who they, what team would give them, I'd say a top six left tackle. I mean, the teams that have a top six left tackle are not trading them, you know. And so you, you know, if you were to, if you go to the Dallas Cowboys and say, okay, because they could use a corner, obviously.
Starting point is 01:04:05 Would you trade Tyrant Smith for Patrick Peterson? They're not going to do that. And so that's why, to me, that's a risky venture. You almost have to take a tackle in the draft and develop them into a left tackle. You saw what the Giants did. They made Nate Solder the highest paid tackle in history. And the last two weeks on two separate plays,
Starting point is 01:04:30 he's gotten turnstiled and gotten Eli. Manning hit lit up big. So I don't know. I think I would say, Colin, of course, I'd love to get a left tackle if I were Arizona. And I probably would make that trade, but I just don't see it happening with any team with a good left tackle. You know, it's funny in football is that I've never been a guy that you have to win a Super Bowl to be a Hall of Famer or you have to be a World Series guy or NBA title guy. I think we spend way too much time defining people. You know, they get, they hand out one trophy a year in every sport. But I will tell you, it's a weird year.
Starting point is 01:05:07 That if Philip Rivers and Andy Reid are the two guys in the NFL that I think a Hall of Fame could hinge, it feels like, on a Super Bowl trip. Maybe not winning it, but another trip. What do you make of Andy Reed's legacy, his reputation? Does this year matter more to Andy than any year of his career, potentially? potentially yes but Colin i guess i would say about reed that he's showing no signs of wanting to get out of football he's got a quarterback he's 60 years old he's got a quarterback who's young and new and exciting and he's going to give him a chance i think soon you know to to win a super bowl a chance
Starting point is 01:05:53 i'm not saying he's going to win one but i think he they'll make it to a super bowl sometime in the next let's say three years you know if if andy read coaches the chiefs two or three more years you know he's going to he's going to pass curly lambo and he's going to pass chuck knoll and he's going to be the fifth winningest coach of all time yeah hard for me to imagine super bowl or not hard for me to imagine that that doesn't get you into the hall of fame yeah as far as philip rivers goes i i wrote my column the other day it's hard for me to imagine if I'm doing it then, and I doubt I will be, but whatever, nine years down the road sitting in that Hall of Fame voting room and not casting a vote for Philip Rivers.
Starting point is 01:06:38 Yeah. I just, I mean, Colin, the way he's played now at whatever age he is 37, 36, since, say, the last month or so of last year, his Thanksgiving game against Dallas. Oh, God, he was great. And how he's playing this year, he's, he's as good as he's ever been. at whatever age he is right now. And he's on my very, very short list of MVP candidates right now. Yeah, you have Mahomes one, girly two, breeze three, Philip Rivers four, and Adam Thielen
Starting point is 01:07:08 five. For the record, I got to tell you, the Levian Bell situation, we're freaking out here. But I'm sitting there thinking that if he reports before next Tuesday at four, I think they can trade him. But he has to appear before week 10. or he's not a free agent. I'm looking at the Steelers this morning and I'm thinking, wait a minute, they're going to add to, they already lead their division.
Starting point is 01:07:35 They're going to add to an already robust offense, a superstar running back with completely fresh legs. And in a weird way, this has worked out perfectly for the Steelers if he shows up in about 10 days. Is it possible that this thing, this muddy situation could be a blessing in disguise? possible, Colin. You know, you never know. It depends on how the guy's in the locker room react to him coming back. Tomlin will probably be able to smooth that over, I would think. And I think the other issue is, you know, you talk about could somebody trade for him?
Starting point is 01:08:15 You know, I have to tell you, I don't see it. And the reason I don't see it is that if you trade for them, let's just say you do. Okay, you can't sign them to a new contract this year. You've got to wait until the off season to sign him. And if you have to wait until the off season to sign him, here's my question. What's to stop him? Think about it from wanting to be the highest paid whatever and to demand this much money or else, hey, look, I want to go into free agency. So then you franchise him again and this all could happen all over again.
Starting point is 01:08:51 And so my feeling is I would be surprised if he gets traded by next two. Tuesday. Yeah. Boy, I'll tell you what, though, he is a bell cow running back. Everybody come Thanksgiving is looking for fresh bodies. He's not only a fresh body. He's an incredible player. There's an old saying. It is in the, in the NFL, you, did you tell me this? In the NFL, you hold out. In the NBA, you act out. You know, if you want a new deal. And I look at Levy and Bell and I'm like, somebody's getting a gift in about three weeks. That's all I know, Peter. Somebody's getting a gift here because this is an 85.
Starting point is 01:09:31 Well, Colin, imagine if he goes to Philadelphia, really. Oh, boy. I mean, if the Eagles are sort of teetering on the brinkets, say, I don't know, five and five or four in five, imagine if they were to be able to activate him for, say, the last seven games, it would be a gigantic wrench in the middle of the NFC play. out. Good Lord, wouldn't it be? I got to tell you, I like Eli Apple's gone from the Giants to the Saints this morning. Amari Cooper has gone from the Raiders to the Cowboys. I love player movement. It's just another dimension to the NFL. You've been covering it forever. NBA has always been
Starting point is 01:10:10 kind of a trade league to me. I don't know if there's more trades now in season than ever. It feels like we're getting more activity, doesn't it? No question about it. And I think the reason is the young general managers and young coaches don't necessarily buy that you have to do it the way you used to do it. Yeah. So the younger GMs and the younger people making the decisions are not necessarily married to their ancestors in the league. Plus, it always helps if you can make a trade up through week 8 in the NFL
Starting point is 01:10:43 instead of through week 6. The New York Giants are 1 in 6. Would they have traded Eli Apple at 1 in 5? You know, I don't know, but right now the Giants know that they're going nowhere this year. They thought they were going nowhere, but now after Monday night, I think they know it. So I like it. I would even like it if it were, say, after week 10, I think that would promote even more player movement than usual. I love it. Peter King, NBCSports.com.
Starting point is 01:11:10 Peter, great stuff. Lavian Bell. We got movement in the NFL Amari Cooper. Good stuff. Peter. Thank you. All right. Thank you, Colin.
Starting point is 01:11:19 Yeah, listen, aggressive is winning in sports. The Cowboys were aggressive. I like it. The Saints were just aggressive. I like it. I think Arizona should be aggressive with Patrick Peterson. I really do. If they could get an offensive line starter, move him and get a pick. If you could tell me, they get a right tackle and a fifth round pick for Patrick Peterson. I'm not so sure I wouldn't do it.
Starting point is 01:11:37 You better protect Josh Rosen because he got hurt in college. He's already hurt in the NFL. That kid can't take a beating like Andrew Luck. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So we talked about having a plan when you go up to talk to the press.
Starting point is 01:11:55 Yeah. Right? Well, yesterday we talked about frustrated Hugh Jackson. Yeah. Talking about taking the play calling back from offensive coordinator Todd Haley. So take a listen to that. Being a head coach and an offensive guy who's done this, I think I have every right as a head coach to jump in here and see if I can help.
Starting point is 01:12:10 I feel like I have to and I want to. You know, that's what I know. So I'm not going to continue to watch something that I know how to do. keep being that way. That's just the truth. I'm the head coach of the football team, period. Period. I don't like that. There's nothing else that needs to be said. Nothing. I don't like that.
Starting point is 01:12:26 Well, there is more than he needs to be said, says Hugh Jackson. He claims now that he is planning, not planning on taking back control of the playbook from Todd Haley. Just changes mine. Okay. I never said that I would take over to play calling. I can't worry about where everybody comes from and where everybody wants, how they want to write it. I can only go by what I say. and I know what I meant and I know what I said.
Starting point is 01:12:48 And I still feel the same way today. Okay. I think he heard some heat and he kind of backtracked there. I mean, look, this isn't, it's 2018. We have recording devices now. We don't just write stuff. Right. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:13:04 What are you talking about? Are you taking it back or are you not taking it back? Obviously, he was frustrated and spoke out of frustration when he said he was taking the play calling away from time. Have a plan when you go to the podium. Just, yeah. And don't sell up. out your, that should be world number one, obviously
Starting point is 01:13:17 I have a plan, but two is don't sell out your players and your coordinators. Like, take the blame for everything and then when you go back in the back, you can yell and say whatever you want. Because you can't say that you're taking the play calling away from Todd Haley. When you were calling the plays, how was the team doing? Not good. Not so good.
Starting point is 01:13:34 Not a good idea. Next, Patriot's running back, Sony Michelle left the game against the Bears with a knee injury. It appears he got good news on his MRI yesterday. Adam Schafter reports the test showed no structural damage to his knee. Shepter reports he's considered week to week and the Patriots have three games to go until they reach their by week. So they have James White, Kenyon Barker and James Devlin as healthy members of the back bill in the roster right now. Devlin's a full back,
Starting point is 01:13:59 but the other two guys are fine. And they play the bills on Monday. So it's kind of good timing if they need to. They're going to start getting into divisional games here. So they've faced some tougher games. Bears on the road was a tough game. Kansas City at home was a tough game. So They're the one team in the league. They kind of enter, you know, James White's great, and Sony Michelle's great. But I think the key, what Sony Michelle is, post- Thanksgiving, he'll be available. Just let him rest. And finally, there was an interesting moment in the game last night, the Falcons Giants game,
Starting point is 01:14:32 and it involved O'Dell Beckham Jr. Yeah. Here's a candid moment from Bogart McFarland. Yeah. Odell Beckham Jr. was running off the field. I don't know if anything was wrong there. Lisa says don't worry about Odell, nothing but a bathroom break. You know, back in my day, Ted, we would do that on the sideline.
Starting point is 01:14:50 I didn't need to go to the back for that. We just kind of sit down on the bench and do your business and move on. That's what we did. Bug, that's too much information. No, it's not. No, listen, listen, all these Diva wire receivers wanted to go to bathroom. As a defensive lineman, we didn't go to the bathroom. You sat on the bench, did your business, and you got up.
Starting point is 01:15:08 And we walked barefoot uphill both ways of school under snow. One receiver's seat. cool. Cool guys don't go to the bathroom on the sidelines. I mean, let's be honest. Wide receivers got a little game, got a little diva, got a little swag. Maybe a 340 pound defensive line we're not paying to, paying attention.
Starting point is 01:15:25 Odell Beckham's got to go to the locker room and then come back. I have heard so many of these stories of this, the bathroom breaks just in your pants. I mean, stink is obviously like that's kind of part of Mark Schler's whole thing. Legacy.
Starting point is 01:15:41 That's part of his legacy. Sort of. I don't know. I don't know what to make of that. I think it's okay for you to go run into the restroom. I'm pretty sure this is very common. Super Bowl, no, one in six. Yeah. I don't understand why they don't have just like a little tunnel bathroom in the middle. I've actually talked about this with friends many times.
Starting point is 01:15:58 I'm surprised we don't see it all the time. Of course, if Odell is jogging off the field, we're going to pay attention to that. It's like now the whole world knows you have to use the restroom. It was an odd moment. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd loss. My guy, Chris Haynes, Yahoo Sports, was at the Laker game last night.
Starting point is 01:16:17 Is he in Alonzo? I'm into Lonzo. That's next, The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Welcome back. A guy I trust. We invite him to the couch anytime we can.
Starting point is 01:16:30 Senior NBA insider for Yahoo Sports. He covered LeBron and the Cavs for the Cleveland Plain dealer. And ESPN had him on the Warriors beat. Chris Haynes was at the Spurs Lakers last night. Let's start with this. their own three. LeBron says trust the process. Cress, do you buy it? I'm going to buy it as a right now because LeBron James teams typically when he does go to a new team, different personnel, they tend to starve slowly. And so that's why I'm going to give him
Starting point is 01:16:58 the benefit of the doubt right now. But the way they're losing, especially the way that they lost last night, I'm disturbed a little bit. Well, what bothered you last night? Well, you know, I said this before. In a few minutes, the Laker fan base got a glimpse of LeBron James' heroics that he's endured through all throughout his career, but also they saw his shortcomings that he had as well. Free throws. Free throws. Last minute, you know, last minute misses at the buzzer.
Starting point is 01:17:28 And so things of that nature. So those are things that LeBron James, people criticize him for that. But over the last couple of years, he's come on strong and hit some game winners. but as you still see, that's LeBron. That's some give and take you've got to take with him. I thought the young guys look good. Let's talk specifically about the young guys you like. Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart.
Starting point is 01:17:50 At some point, Luke Walton is going to have to make a decision and insert Josh Hart into that starting lineup. It's clear that Contavius Codwell Pope is not fitting in right now with that Ross. So he has to make a decision. Luke was asked that a couple days ago. He said it was too early to make such a decision. It ain't too early. I think we all see who's a better fit in that starting five alongside LeBron James.
Starting point is 01:18:14 And that's Josh Hart. Cald. Kowis Kudman is just playing big time. A long stretch three, four guy in this league right now. And those guys right now by far standing out. Lonzo balls hit seven threes. What do you make of him? I like it. But there's still some opportunities where I've seen that he's gotten open shots,
Starting point is 01:18:33 primarily by you know from the hands of LeBron James and he's passed those up and tried to drive and do too much and it's led to turnovers and Lonzo he's used to having the ball in his hands and he's going to have to get accustomed to understanding that it's going to be LeBron James's rock and then secondarily it's probably going to be Rajan Rondo and he's going to have to learn how to catch and shoot so the jury is still out on him if you ask me is if he can play alongside LeBron James the future but you couldn't bail on him in a trade could you because of Rondo's history. He doesn't last anywhere. You got to have a point.
Starting point is 01:19:07 I mean, I like Rondo's short term, but I'm not sure Chris if he has a long-term personality. That's a good point. But, you know, when we're talking about short-term, long-term, short-term, all we're talking about essentially is this year. Because that's what the Lakers are doing. It's an evaluation period for a lot of guys. No, no, it's an audition. Yes, it's an audition. This is an audition until the trading deadline.
Starting point is 01:19:30 For sure, for sure. And it's not just audition. for those guys on one-year deals because it's a lot of those guys, but it's an audition for Lonzo Ball. And, you know, I just don't know, Colin, I really, right now, if you ask me right now, I just don't envision a long-term future with those two. I really don't. LeBron and Lonzo.
Starting point is 01:19:48 I really don't. I think Lonzo needs to have his own team where he had the ball in his hands the majority of time. When he's playing with LeBron, to get the most out of a LeBron James team, you have to allow him to do all that he's able to capable of. do on the court, and that is primarily controlling the rock. What do you make of the fight with the Rockets? You know what? This is my little thing, Colin.
Starting point is 01:20:11 I know Chris Paul and Ray John and Rondo's getting a lot of buzz, and rightfully so did it. That's the brawl. But you know what started it? What really started was players and coaches are getting a little irritated and frustrated with the officiating in the way James Hardin is being handled. If you think about
Starting point is 01:20:26 what led to it, what led to it this whole brawl was Brandon Ingram pushing James Harden. Why did Brandon Ingram pushed James Hardin because he was frustrated because James Hardin initiated the contact in transition, got started the bump, basically bumped them all the way out of bounds and almost into the stands. And then that's why Brandon Ingram out of frustration pushed James, which started this whole thing. But if you see Luke Walton last night, he was talking about the free throw disparity and he brought up James Hardin and Chris Paul. That game was two days ago.
Starting point is 01:20:54 But he still brought up after the loss to the Spurs last night, which shows you that players and coaches are getting a little irritated with the way James Harton is officiated. When you talk about people talk about he travels, people talk about he hooks, people talk he initiates the bump. Steve Kerr last year brought up James Harton walking. And so I think that's what's going overlooked is the frustration level with James Hart. By the way, will there be a point, they're 0 and 3? And to me, the losses have been good losses, but will there be a point you'd push
Starting point is 01:21:25 the panic button? If they lose the Phoenix next game. And I know, and that's probably still too soon to put a panic. button. Is that their next game? Next game. Okay, where's it at? In Phoenix. Okay, so if they go over four and lose to Phoenix. And by the way, after that, they got some tough ones. After that, you know, so the next eight games, six of those games, they're expected to
Starting point is 01:21:48 be the underdogs and six of those games. So it's not looking pretty good for a little So at 3 and 11, if you saw 3 and 11, would you trade like a KCP? Would you make a move? Because, I will say this. They got 10 guys who can ball a little. It's a fairly deep roster. Now, they don't have a great player after LeBron. But, Chris, they've got about 10 guys who can ball a little.
Starting point is 01:22:11 Yeah. I mean, would you move a guy? Not even if they were 3-11. I think that's still too soon. I'm just saying I will push the panic button a little bit because I think if Coach Walton hasn't made any adjustments to that roster or to that lineup by, you know, after that Phoenix game and they're still having problems, that's when I'm thinking that's the next move, not necessarily wholesale. changes. And for
Starting point is 01:22:33 KCP, he's a great defender. I think he's their best perimeter defender. But Josh Hart's the better player. I think that's, I think he's showing that right now. I cannot believe how good he is. I am shocked how good he. I thought he was going to be classic Villanova. Smart guy plays defense low ceiling. Yeah. Now, and if you look at,
Starting point is 01:22:50 we talked about in the back, Colin, like, you look at last year's draft and it's Kuzma and Josh Hart. Those are the players that we're talking about. Isn't that funny? Those are the players, not the number two pick. Lounso ball. And, you know, it's not even necessarily Brandon Ingram.
Starting point is 01:23:05 You know, it was a year before that. And so the Lakers have great pieces moving ahead, and they're still going to be an opportunity to bring some Max guys on. So Phoenix is the, I've never wanted to watch a Phoenix Suns game more than that one. By the way, they have that kid from Arizona. Aiton? Aiton. He looks like the real deal.
Starting point is 01:23:25 Oh, wow. He looks like the real deal. Oh, yeah. He looks really good. Okay, it's Chris Haynes. senior NBA insider for Yahoo Sports. And do you get to pick the games you go to? Yeah, pretty much.
Starting point is 01:23:38 God. Pretty much. Can you imagine Joy and I, Joy, let's just not work Wednesday. Pretty, pretty much. Let's go Thursday. That is a good. I feel like you have that power, Colin. Well, no, not really.
Starting point is 01:23:48 Chris Haynes, check him out. Whenever he's in town, we love to have him on the show. Our three, Trent Dilfer, can't wait. It's the herd. Hour three, live. This is the herd. wherever you may be and however you may be listening. I Heart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and right here, FS1.
Starting point is 01:24:06 Tonight, Game 1 of the World Series. It is a great one on Fox. It is the Dodgers who won their division again. This time they're in the World Series. Clayton Kershaw goes in game one against the Boston Red Sox, who are a slight, not a heavy favorite. J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts. Chris Sale, we'll throw it tonight for them.
Starting point is 01:24:24 David Price, their number two starter starts tomorrow. Boston's the better team, won 108 games. Kind of blitz through the American Luts. league playoffs. Dodgers are very good team, but he did that amazing catch by Chris Taylor in game seven in Milwaukee and the home run by Yassie O'Pwig. It's a very good series. By the way, J.D. Martinez, great player. AL MVP candidate has hit Clayton Kershaw well before and now they are at Fenway in 15 minutes. Former Super Bowl champ Trent Dilfer stops by. He stops by every week. It's one of my favorite situations on the show. Also, Joy Taylor has a weird. I mean, that's the, I just,
Starting point is 01:25:00 heard about this has a weird story in about 25 minutes in Herdline News. I'm going to, I've never heard of this story, but it's an NFL story and it is weird. All right, let's start with this. The Cowboys made a big move yesterday at wide receiver, and it's another example of how being aggressive is rewarded in sports. The Golden State Warriors were good and had a title. They went out and recruited Kevin Durant. Houston was good and had James Hardin, went out and recruited Chris Paul.
Starting point is 01:25:36 By the way, the baseball, the Dodgers were already loaded and expensive. They went and got Manny Machado. The Red Sox didn't even need J.D. Martinez. They went out and got him anyway. The Astros won a World Series. Why? They went out and paid for Justin Verlander. In the NFL, who's being rewarded?
Starting point is 01:25:52 The Philadelphia Eagles, hyper-aggressive, fourth down, free agents, the L.A. Rams, number one team in the league. Kansas City Chiefs aggressively moved up to get Patrick Mahomes. Look around sports. The Giants couldn't make a move on Eli. How they doing? One in six. Be aggressive.
Starting point is 01:26:14 Yesterday the Dallas Cowboys, and this is their brand through the years, were aggressive. And they traded a number one pick for wide receiver Amari Cooper. Now, I would prefer they give away a third round pick, but that's not going to happen because other teams offered a second. I would really prefer they offered a second round pick. But they offered a first round pick because other teams offered a second. And so they were a little, little, and they're aggressive,
Starting point is 01:26:44 probably gave up a little more than I would want to. But I would have done it in a second for a third rounder. I would have done it in a second for a second rounder. So I had to move to the first. It's a terrible wide receiver draft. This year in the NFL, it's going to be an incredible pass rushing draft. Oh, they got that covered. It's going to be a great linebacker draft.
Starting point is 01:27:02 Cowboys have that covered. It's going to be a great offensive line draft. Cowboys have it covered. It's a lousy wide receiver draft. But you know what this really was? You know what this move by the Cowboys really was? It was documentation. If you're going to fire somebody in a job,
Starting point is 01:27:17 you better have documentation before you do it. And if you're going to hire somebody for a job, you get documentation to prove he's better, she's better than all the other candidates. This was a documentation move. The Cowboys have an elite left tackle. They have an elite running back. They have an elite front seven defensively.
Starting point is 01:27:36 They have a very good slot receiver. They have an all-pro center, though he's hurt now. And they got offensive coaches. You have to find out in the next 10 games if you're going to pay Dak Prescott or not. And now with Amari Cooper, you're going to have an elite running back, an elite left tackle, an above-average offensive line, offensive coaches, a playmaking perimeter player. Okay, if he can't get 275 yards, then you've answered. The big question, he's not the guy.
Starting point is 01:28:08 That's what this is about. Jerry Jones is saying, listen, we're going to need a playmaker at wide receiver anyway, and we would have drafted it in the first round, and our gut feeling is, this guy's better than what was out there. We don't need a defensive lineman. We got those. We don't need pass rushers. we don't need offensive linemen, and we don't need young linebackers.
Starting point is 01:28:26 We got all that covered. We need a playmaker at wide receiver. That's what we're going to take in. It's a lousy draft. And, oh, by the way, we got to figure out if DAC is worth $24 million a year. Because in the next year, you're going to have to open up the wallet and pay this kid $100 million. And if you make the wrong decision, you are absolutely trapped. And so the Cowboys got aggressive yesterday.
Starting point is 01:28:52 And by the way, if Dax's not the guy, then the rookie quarterback gets Amari Cooper and Zekiel Elliott and Tyron Smith and Cole Beasley and offensive coaches. And ask yourself if you were absolutely sure today. I went on the internet yesterday, bandwidth.com, you should try it out. And I saw a lot of this. Oh, boy, John Gruden. Woo-wee. John Gruden, you mopped up. All right, really?
Starting point is 01:29:19 ask yourself, who would you rather be today? The Raiders with a bunch of draft picks or the Cowboys with an elite running back, an elite left tackle, a pro bowl center, excellent young pass rushers, tremendously athletic linebackers. You'd rather be the Raiders today with a bunch of, well, we could get that kid out of Mississippi State. You know, I like that guy out of Clemson. that Notre Dame kid's not bad. Or tangible assets, Tyron Smith, Amari Cooper, Zique, pass rushers, you know, Sean Lee.
Starting point is 01:30:00 If you all think the Raiders won it because they accumulated a bunch of draft picks, you'd rather be the Raiders today. I want assets. I want players. Yes, I would have rather given up a second round pick. I would have loved to have given up a third round pick. But they couldn't do that because everybody else was offering
Starting point is 01:30:17 seconds and good seconds. And Dallas is probably good enough to finish at 8 and 8. I mean, you know, 7 to 9, 8, and 8, 9, and 7, that's not going to be a great second round pick. So, and for all these people that all freak out about giving up a first round pick, let me give you a couple of teams that gave up stuff. Atlanta Falcons gave up three to four picks to get Julio Jones. Do they regret it today?
Starting point is 01:30:47 I don't think they do. Philadelphia Eagles gave up picks to get Carson Wentz. Do they regret it today? Kansas City Chiefs gave up three picks to get Patrick Mahomes. Do they regret it today? The L.A. Rams gave up five or six picks to get Jared Gough. Do they regret it today? Those are quarterbacks.
Starting point is 01:31:06 Atlanta gave up three or four picks to give up Julio Jones. Do they regret it today? The Cowboys gave up one pick at a position of need that they were going to draft anyway to get a 24-year-old wide receiver who can still play, who's got like seven years left minimum of real game. And it is documentation to figure out in one year if you pay DAC $100 million or go get the next great young cowboy quarterback. Jason Garrett, radio this morning in Dallas talked about the move and why they did it. We really believe that Amari can be that kind of a guy.
Starting point is 01:31:52 Again, he's 24 years old, and we think he has a bright future. And, you know, the value for a player like that at his age, that's really what it costs you. It costs your first round pick. And if we were to get into the draft next spring, you would say, boy, is there any receiver who's as good as a guy like Amari Cooper? He's not 28, 29, 30. You're not paying for a guy for what he's done for the past six, seven, eight years for another two. team, we feel like he has it in front of him and he can really benefit our team going forward because the ability he has and the kind of person he is.
Starting point is 01:32:27 I totally, totally agree with that. Do you guys realize that Amari Cooper is only six months older than Falcon wide receiver rookie Calvin Ridley? He's a baby. Came out early, young player. Jason Garrett's never sounds smarter than that. Completely absolutely agree. And he goes to an organization that's kind of in disarray and has a lot of fingers crossed on accumulating draft picks to one that's just missing what he is, a game changer at wide receiver.
Starting point is 01:33:03 You know, it is interesting if you think about this. Had the Cowboys field goal joy gone in against Washington, they would be four and three and you'd be like, they just got Amari Cooper. But the field goal doesn't go in and you're like, wow, that's giving up a lot for Amari Cooper. We're a clang away from Dallas, Washington having one fewer win, Dallas having more win, and we're all going, wow, that's exactly what they need. They can win the division now. Well, I mean, it's a game of inches gone. There you go. And a game of wide receivers increasingly.
Starting point is 01:33:41 Trent Dilfer is around the corner. Always look forward to this. We always get smarter. Trent's coming up next. Want more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Starting point is 01:33:57 Car shopping's confusing. A lot of terms. Dealer price, list price, invoice. True car shows you what other people paid for the car you want. Save three grand off MSRP. All sorts of stuff. There's rumors out there. Arizona might make a deal for Patrick Peterson.
Starting point is 01:34:11 They're saying it's not true. We've got a bizarre NFL story around the corner with Joy Taylor. I don't even know where to go with it, but it's a bizarre story. But first, via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Decade and a half of the NFL guy rely on often for his expertise in these situations of the Amari-Cuper deal. Okay, let's say you're the coach of the GM of the Dallas Cowboys. Let's look at it, Trent, from the Cowboys perspective first. What do you make of the trade?
Starting point is 01:34:37 I love it. I liked all the reasons Coach Garrett explained it. I like your take on it. I don't think you can properly evaluate back forrest Scott. and decide to pay him possibly $25 million as early as next year until you find out what he can do. And the only way we're going to find out what he can do is by surrounding him with the right people. He needed an alpha playmaking wide receiver. They went and got him for a first round pick.
Starting point is 01:35:02 A guy has experience. He's still young. He's been productive. He's been a game changer. And now they add him to an already pretty talented roster. And I think if you take just a Dak Prescott look at this, I've been hearing for like last, four or five weeks, all the things Dak can't do. He can't do this. He can't do that. Maybe the coaches don't trust him because he can't. Well, we don't know what he can do.
Starting point is 01:35:25 Because you haven't given him a chance. I mean, Gallup's showing some promise. They made some big plays down the field. But we don't really know what that can do. And now we're going to be able to see it for the rest of this season if he truly is a top-tier quarterback. I believe he can be now with the people around them. And like you said, they got a very good offense. line. Now they have a number one right receiver. They've developed a really good number two in Gallup. They have full Beasley to get up the middle of the field. They have one of the top backs in Zhekel Elliott. The pressure is truly now on DAC to show us that he can be a dominant passer in this league. Take it from the Raiders angle. What do you think of it? I'm unsure. My mind is blown a little
Starting point is 01:36:10 bit how you can let go of the premier pass rush for the national football league and now let's say arguably one of the top 10 receivers in the NFL. I think people are making too much of the picks. I think this is about money. I think John Gruden's always been most successful when he has a veteran-laced team with today the way the salary cap works. Once you pay a couple players, now the rest of your team is really under-experienced, underpaid rookie guys or guys on the rookie contract. I think John wants the cap space to be able to go out and attack free agency, fill the
Starting point is 01:36:44 bulk of his roster, your core players with experienced vets, guys that are true pros. I think he'll go, he'll get a lot of guys that other teams just can't afford to pay and they'll be able to pay them. And they'll have the draft picks to go draft future difference makers that will
Starting point is 01:37:00 then play on rookie contracts which aren't that expensive. That's my take on it. I'm very curious to see what they do with Derek Carr. I'm from the school that I've seen John say too many glowing things about Derek. I like Derek as a player, but I wouldn't be surprised if Derek is next. You know, it's interesting. I was talking to an NFL exec last week, and he said, if he was running a team, it was a guy that
Starting point is 01:37:24 used to be in that spot. He said, I would draft my defense, make it a simple concept so they can come in and play, and they're inexpensive, and I would pay for my offense because now the rules are all about offense. Maybe Gruden's going to do that, Trent. draft his defense and go pay for veterans on offense. That's kind of what you're saying. Yeah, exactly. And we can't really judge John until next year. And so we see what he does with these picks and what he does with this cap space. So it's really easy right now to step on John
Starting point is 01:37:54 Gruden's throat and just say, hey, you got rid of a great receiver, got rid of a great linebacker. There's something bigger going on that we're not going to know until after pre-agency next year and after the draft. And we may not even know then. It may be be a year after that. When you have a 10-year contract, you've got a long leash. You can make some bold decisions and you can be looking three, four, five years out and not be as concerned with right now. And I think when John sits there for 10 years and does TV and reevaluates what he did while he was a coach in the game, I'm sure he had a very distinct plan on how he was going to handle this. And I'm not being an apologist for John Gruden, but I'm going to give him enough
Starting point is 01:38:34 of a leash to say, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm see this out for 12 to 18 months before I put full judgment on it. You know, I'm watching that Giants game last night, and I'm not going to bang on I'm not going to bang on Ely. You watch the whole thing, huh? Yeah. But I'll tell you my takeaway. Once again, somebody pays for a Bill Belichick player, Nate Solder, and it looks like,
Starting point is 01:38:59 I mean, the minute New England's done with a guy, the guy is done. I mean, my takeaway last night was what happened to Nate Solder? I mean, what did you make about it? So I look at a little bit differently. I've always said that the Patriots are the best at understanding themselves better than any by else. They understand their program. They understand what they're expecting out of players.
Starting point is 01:39:20 And they understand their player. So when a player is a great player for a Patriot, he's a great player because of that fits. They've identified the things that player can do. They build a system around what they can do, not what they can't do. and then that player looks good doing it. I think the indictment is on the teams to go get ex-patriot players and say, oh, he's going to play for us as well as he played for the Patriots.
Starting point is 01:39:47 Well, that's not true because they're going to ask him to do different things. I think Nate Solzer is a great example of that. He was a great patriot. And it's not that he's not a good player, but he did exactly what he was supposed to do as a patriot as well as any patriot not named Tom Brady. So what the Giants said was they went and they, paid him a bunch of money to go be something a little bit different than he was in New England.
Starting point is 01:40:09 He wasn't asked to be put on an island and flocked for three seconds very often against with Tom Brady's quarterback. Tom Brady gets the ball in 2.2 seconds on the average as fast as anybody in the National Football League. Tom Brady changes the protection at the line of scrimmage anytime he sees a mismatch. Tom Brady audibles out of plays where his players are at a disadvantage. So, Nate Soldier fit that perfectly. He was the perfect Patriot fit.
Starting point is 01:40:34 It doesn't mean he's going to be a great fit anywhere you go. And you're going to see this happen as long as Bill Belichick is head coach for the New England Patriots. That the Patriot Way gets the most out of that player because they focus on what that player can do. Other teams are going to watch tape and go, oh, okay, he's a really good player. Let's pay him a bunch of money and ask him to do something else. It's an indictment on those teams that sign ex-patriot players. Speaking of ex-players who's going to be a player, Levian Bell, he's not going to report before Tuesday at 4 Eastern because then you could trade him.
Starting point is 01:41:08 So he's going to report at some point after next Tuesday at 4 and before week 10. And he's going to have no miles on those legs. He's going to be the freshest guy in a room. And I could make an argument. They're adding a star to a star stood at offense. Do you see it that way? Yeah, I don't disagree, but I still, no matter what happens, I still think glaring around Bell's a big loser in this thing.
Starting point is 01:41:31 The one thing about the NFL is they will move on from you. no matter who you are, no matter how much of a legend you are, no matter how talented you are. They will move on. Their job is to win a game the next week. And the Steelers have done that. They've eliminated the drama.
Starting point is 01:41:45 They've moved on. They found a nice little runner Connor in his place. He's not as good as Leveon Bell. I don't think anybody would make that argument, but they've built their system around them. And I think Leveon's lost a lot of money in this holdout. I think he'll hurt himself from free agency. And he'll come back.
Starting point is 01:42:00 And he will be a good player for him. and they will maximize his talents and get some usage out of him. But you go back and there's only one loser in this whole thing, is Levyon Bell. Yeah. What do you make of Patrick Peterson complaining in Arizona? Or is he complaining? His brother's talking or a cousin.
Starting point is 01:42:17 Yeah. What do you make of that? He's a great player. Yeah, my thoughts on this or this. I think this might be this generation of NFL athletes' way of forcing a team's hand. A player has very little power. And I'm not saying I agree with any of this. And I would not have done this in a player and I don't like when players do it.
Starting point is 01:42:36 But when they realize they're in a situation where they feel hopeless, now they can start making demands. And basically the message they're sending to the organization is, do you want to disgruntled me, a guy that's not going to be all in, a guy that may not play to the level I've played at before because I'm not all in and I don't believe in what we're doing? Or do you want to go out and get some picks for me? and we've seen it happen now the last few years where the player is winning this battle when he comes out and starts being a disgruntled guy. I don't like it, but I got to admit that it is really the only ammunition a player like Patrick Peterson has if indeed he wants to heck out of odds. Yeah, the NBA, Chris Broussard had a line last week.
Starting point is 01:43:20 He said in the NFL you hold out, in the NBA you act out. but what you're seeing is some NFL guys acting out and holding out. And no, to your point, I've got to tell you, I've been critical of Cam Newton. And that's why I was so interested in seeing how Norv Turner worked with Cam. So I watched every snap of the Eagles Carolina game. It was wildly entertaining. And the Cam I saw in the fourth quarter, engineering a great comeback, was about as good as I've ever seen Cam. accuracy
Starting point is 01:43:52 you know he still throws off his back foot he's still too much arm not enough legs but I was blown away Sunday in that fourth quarter what was your takeaway first of all this is what Norv does at some point not as a head coach but his assistant
Starting point is 01:44:08 coach he's one of the greatest of all time and he's done this with a bunch of different quarterbacks gotten the most out of them what Norv does I played premier in San Francisco is the backup and I saw what he with Alex Smith is again he does a lot like what the Patriots do. He identifies what you can do.
Starting point is 01:44:23 What makes you tick? What is your natural DNA? And then he builds the entire offense around that. And when Norv is done for Cam Newton, he says, Cam, I'm not going to ask you to be a surgeon. I'm not going to ask you be precise. I want you to be a flipping butcher. Pull out your machete.
Starting point is 01:44:40 Chop some stuff up and give me a roast beef sandwich. I'm not going to ask you to be a 68% guy. I'm not going to ask you to make a ton of decisions that the Brady's and Breezes and those guys are doing. I'm not going to ask you to be something you're not. Here's what you are. You're a freak of nature. You're a great leader.
Starting point is 01:44:56 You are tough. You have a huge arm and you're a big play waiting to happen. So we're going to let you go be a big play waiting to happen. And when you go 0 for seven and overthrow some guys and make a bad decision, don't worry about it. I'm going to keep battling them up so you can make big plays. And that's kind of what you're seeing with Cam. Norv is letting Cam be Cam. And I think it's brilliant.
Starting point is 01:45:16 I think Cam is now back in the conversation of one of the more. dominant players in this league because he is so physically gifted. He does things that nobody else could do, and Norv isn't sequestering that. He's allowing it to happen. And finally, I didn't think Baker played very well. He got four turnovers. It had 120 yards in the first three quarters, but I'm told that you are about ready to bring the hammer on me. I wasn't blown away. Now, I've said with all these guys, it's a roller coaster ride. They're rookie. They're all over the map. Darnold's good.
Starting point is 01:45:52 Donald's as good as his running game. When he doesn't have a running game, Donald's struggling. When he has one, he looks great. What did you make a Baker this week? I don't disagree with you that he didn't play great. I disagree that he doesn't have the chance to be great. I think Baker has a chance to be a great player in this league.
Starting point is 01:46:09 And I've said this. I think every week we've done their show and talked about Baker, it all comes down to two things. Does Baker decide to be Drew Brees or something that he's not a playmaker? Baker has a great opportunity to be one of the most precise players, passers in this league. He has to play that way. Now, to play that way, he needs his team, the Cleveland Browns, to build the system around him as the Saints did with Drew Brees. Strong from the center, center guard area.
Starting point is 01:46:38 So there's no middle pocket push. And offense is about quick decisions and precision, not about chunk plays. If Todd Helley and Hugh Jackson are building this offense, like, for, for, for, a Ben Rathosberger type player, then they're wrong. The whole thing needs to be built around Baker's precision. When you watch him throw a football, when you watch him the subtle little movements he can make in the pocket, it's great time and space. When you see his versatility to build a throw off platform, the things he can do at all
Starting point is 01:47:08 layers of the field, he can be special, but you have to build the whole offense around those unique traits and not just call play. This ain't spitball now. You don't put a spitball and throw it against the wall and say that's the one we're running, because Ben Rathusberger made that one run in, made that one work. Every play has to have a specific purpose that emphasizes and brings out what Baker does great. That's my take on Baker. What happened the other day was when they were calling the precision game, he was really good.
Starting point is 01:47:39 The end of the game, when it was about completions and moving the ball, he was really good. But when they're trying to call these specials and these chunk plays and attack defenses in ways that Baker can't do, yet he looks very average at best. And I think that's going to be the conversation around Baker's who move forward. Ah, just get smarter. Love this. I get to see a Super Bowl trophy over Trent Delfar's head. I get all this expertise on stuff.
Starting point is 01:48:02 Even when he defends Baker Mayfield, I liked all that right there. What's shinier in my head or the trophy behind me? They're both pretty shiny, to be honest with you, to draw. Good seeing you, buddy. All right, pal. All right, thanks. Yeah, he's really got Baker Mayfield down. Like when he says that, like that's, he says it better than I would say it,
Starting point is 01:48:23 but what he is saying is absolutely what I see. I just don't say it as well. But it's like, this is the one reason I said, Baker's not going to be a bust. He's just too damn accurate. Like he throws a, I like his motion way better than Sam Darnold. And I think he's a kid that'll stay a little healthier than Josh Rosen. He's not going to be a bust.
Starting point is 01:48:42 Now, I think his ceiling's closer to Case Keenham. I think he's better than Case. I don't think it's Drew Brees, who's one of the five, seven. 10 best quarterbacks I've ever seen. But he is, when he's in the pocket and his time, Baker throws a beautiful ball. Really accurate. Guys are in stride.
Starting point is 01:48:56 They get it. That's where he's great. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Okay, Colin. So there's still a bit of stuff coming in from this story.
Starting point is 01:49:08 Okay. Oh, this is the weird one. Yes. Broncos backup quarterback, Chad Kelly, was arrested this morning on suspicion of criminal trespass. It's also being reported that he was charged with first degree criminal trespassing. He posted a $2,500 bond and is due back in court tomorrow. And in a statement, the Broncos said that they are disappointed
Starting point is 01:49:30 and they're getting more information from the police on Kelly. So according to court reports, a man and a woman told police that he came into their home, uninvited after 1 a.m., and sat on the couch next to the woman and was mumbling incoherently. The man chased him out and hit him in the back with a vacuum tube. and then the police found him nearby and then after confirming on the video reports or the video recordings that it was him and so he's been arrested.
Starting point is 01:49:57 I can't have a quarterback on my roster that is doing that. Well, you remember he also pled guilty to a non-criminal charge of disorderly conduct and agreed to fit the hours of community service. When? After a fight outside of Buffalo Nightclub when he was in Ole Miss Sinee in 2015. Yeah, he's got baggage. I'm out.
Starting point is 01:50:16 I have no time for that nonsense. Again, linebacker, I could deal with it. Safety, I could deal with it. Quarterback? I mean, breaking into somebody's house and sitting on the couch next to someone and... I mean, maybe there was a, maybe he deal with that. Maybe there was a great Netflix show on. I don't know, but that's not, this is a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:50:32 I can't have this nonsense. I'm just not interested in Chad Kelly at all. No, and I mean, I'm done. Yeah, it's not like he was... Now, by the way, DAC had a moment in college at Mississippi State, and I said at the time, I don't like it. But it was isolated. Now we got two with Chad.
Starting point is 01:50:50 And by the way, this has been my knock on, you know, the Baker thing and the James Winston thing. His quarterback is different. This is a maturity and leadership position. I'm out on Chad Kelly. And I've heard things through the years on Chad that Ole Miss had some struggles in this maturity department. A little bit of a frat boy. A little bit. I mean, you're breaking somebody's house in the middle of the night.
Starting point is 01:51:12 Who in this day and age? By the way, Colorado is well-armed. There's a little cowboy feel to Colorado. It's the Old West. I'm not breaking into people's houses in Colorado. Yeah, so we'll get more information on that, I'm sure, as the day goes on. So after the departures of Khalil Mack and now Mari Cooper, the Raiders and Derek Carr seem to be reportedly having some issues as well.
Starting point is 01:51:37 According to Marcus Thompson of the Athletic, team sources describe a fractured relationship between Carr and his teammates, mostly because confidence in him has waned. It certainly didn't help when film showed what looked like him crying after being sacked and injuring his arm. It's hard to see how Carr can lead the team again. They're already rumblings about Carr being a sitting deck. His game is marked by mental fragility that doesn't inspire confidence. I don't come on.
Starting point is 01:52:02 Now, Carr responded directly to this report on Twitter after his brother Darren defended him with a list of his career injuries. And he said, Carr said, don't even waste your time with this big bro on the ground. I yelled, get me up, get me up. Then I got to the sideline and yelled again. Not one tier, not one time. There's the truth. People will click on it because it sounds crazy, but stop playing with me. This is very weird because Derek Carr is not someone that you would generally think of as being soft.
Starting point is 01:52:27 Like there's quarterbacks out that you're like, like, Sam Bradford. No offense to Sam Bradford, but like, you're like, it's kind of believable. Like, guys are always injured. If I'm the Giants, I'd make this move tomorrow, but they had David Carr, so I don't think they'd make the move on Derek Carr. Well, I think the Giants at this point just play the season out. get a draft pick. Like you're, that's where you are. But there are plenty of teams.
Starting point is 01:52:48 I mean, you mentioned the dolphins. How about the Jags? Yeah, or the Jags. And Derek Carr is, and he's actually a quarterback I would consider tough. So if I find this report be kind of weird. I would say this. If Jags need a quarterback and this window is small, if I'm the Jags, I call the Raiders and I'd give the Raiders a pass rusher.
Starting point is 01:53:06 I mean, seriously, it's the one thing they can't do. And it would have, I'm just saying, if. Didn't the Raiders have a good pat? I feel like they have one, but he was going to be really expensive. Jags are one of those rosters. They have players to move. They've got players they could move defensively. If I'm John Gruden, I can get a little bit of a player and a draft pick, I would do it in heartbeat.
Starting point is 01:53:27 It's chaos over there. So the Lakers dropped 0-N-3 last night after losing to the Spurs in overtime. LeBron scored five points in overtime with three assists, but his two misses at the free throw line with 12.8 seconds remaining were big. He went to the line for the Lakers with a 142-141-41 lead, but then went 0-4-4-2. from the line in the clutch. And according to ESPN's stats and info. Oh, brother. This is just the numbers.
Starting point is 01:53:51 I'm just the messenger. In the final 15 seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime, okay, that's clutch time. That's qualifier number one. That's clutch time. All right, so let's just call that clutch time. LeBron is 10 for 21 or 48% on free throws in one score games since the start of last season. So basically all last season, he is 48% from the free throw in clutch time. It just seems like if you just move it from 15 seconds to 24, the number's probably different.
Starting point is 01:54:19 That's the worst free throw percentage of any player with at least 10. It just feels like a lot of qualifiers to me. If 15 seconds, it's snowing out. If you're someone who has to shoot free throws in the clutch and you shoot a lot of them, LeBron is not someone you want to do that. Why 15 seconds? Because the number at 18 seconds is probably different. Listen, God has to be fair, all right?
Starting point is 01:54:41 I'm not great at math. He's got to equal the playing field. everybody. All right. LeBron's not the best clutch free throw shooter. Yeah, Wilk couldn't shoot him. Kareem wasn't great. Duncan wasn't great. What are you not great at?
Starting point is 01:54:52 Shack wasn't great. There's a lot of things I'm not good at. There's a, I can't even start. I'm only good at one or two things and I'm bad at everything else. Well, look, all I'm saying is he's just, LeBron is great at mostly everything on the basketball court except for a clutch free throw shooting. All right.
Starting point is 01:55:10 Look at, I'm not even good combing my hair today. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. What a show today. Russell Wilson, Seahawk quarterback, Trent Dillfer, Peter King, Chris Haynes went to the Lakers' spurs game last night. Coming up next. Saddest story in sports, but it makes me smile in best for last.
Starting point is 01:55:33 The World Series begins tonight on Fox, and game one features two of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Dodgers against Chris Sale and the Red Sox. Game one tonight starting at 7.30 Eastern on Fox in the five. Fox Sports app. I went to the store last night, bought some peanuts, going to sit in the couch, have a beer, eat some peanuts. I don't get to be at Fenway Park, like all my bosses tonight. Like the unshelled peanuts?
Starting point is 01:55:54 Yeah. No, no, no, no, no. Unshelled. Yeah. Like that kind of bag. We're going to throw the... We're on the floor. That's why they created vacuums.
Starting point is 01:56:04 I don't care. And dogs. So this is a great world series. This is nothing against analytics. By the way, the Dodgers believe in analytics. and the Red Sox believe in analytics. They just also believe in stars. So nothing gets Milwaukee,
Starting point is 01:56:18 but they're kind of heavy analytics, light on stars. I like analytics, but mostly I like man analytics, which is stars with my analytics. It is going to be a great world series. And I was thinking about these two teams, these two cities, L.A. and Boston right now, are becoming the sports hubs in the country. Boston's doing it with intellect,
Starting point is 01:56:37 Danny A. A. A. is doing it with glamour. The Rams, Machado Dodgers. LeBron. New York that's got all the money and all the glamour, and a lot of brains is no longer even close to these two. To show you how far New York has fallen as a sports city, I'm going to give you the 10 sports cities in America that are better and best for last than New York. After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, cowherd. It's the best for last. Let's start number one with Los Angeles. Number one.
Starting point is 01:57:13 Okay, the Rams are unbeaten their 7-0. The Dodgers, their six straight playoff appearance. The Lakers have landed LeBron, and the Chargers are 5 and 2. So the two NFL teams are 12 and 2. Los Angeles is right now as hot as anybody in the country. Let's go to number two. Boston. Boston, the Red Sox, are in the World Series and just had the best record in their history.
Starting point is 01:57:38 The current NFL dynasty is the New England Patriots. and the Celtics will either be the number one or two seat in the east, and going forward look to be the next dynasty in the NBA. Number three. Houston, they're doing a lot of things right. The Astros are reigning World Series champs and look to be good for the foreseeable future. The rockets are good, star-studded, and had the NBA's best record in the regular season, not the Warriors last year, and the Texans are currently leading the AFC South.
Starting point is 01:58:11 Number four, Chicago. The Cubs, four straight playoff appearances with Theo Epstein and Joe Madden. The Black Hawks have won three Stanley Cups this decade. And the Bears, this is probably the most promising Chicago Bears football operation we've had since the 90s. They've got players now. They got the coach. I'm not sure if they have the quarterback, but they came with a Hail Mary a beat in the Patriots, and they are nasty up front defensively.
Starting point is 01:58:41 Number five. Let's count Toronto. Raptors are a perennial playoff team and have the best record in the East last year and just beat the Celtics. The Maple Leafs, the original six, the Maple Leafs have the best record in the East this year in the NHL. And Toronto FC is the reigning champs in the MLS. Number six. Oakland. Okay, the Warriors have a dynasty.
Starting point is 01:59:09 I would say the A's revolutionized. baseball analytics, I think you have to put them up there. Listen, if you have the biggest dynasty, perhaps ever in a sport, and doesn't appear to be showing signs of age, you make my list. Number seven.
Starting point is 01:59:25 Milwaukee, the Brewers, again, heavy analytics, just made the National League championship series. The Green Bay Packers with Aaron Rogers are perennial NFC North champions and playoff appearance team. And the Milwaukee Boxer 3 and O, they were a playoff team, Last year, they have one of the top five players in the league in Yanis.
Starting point is 01:59:45 Milwaukee is better than New York. Number eight. Philadelphia. I give Philadelphia a lot of crap, but they just won a Super Bowl. For the record, Villanova right now is the best college basketball power in the country. It's not Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky. Villanova right now is the most dominant college basketball program, and the 76ers won 52 games last year and have two stars.
Starting point is 02:00:09 I'm not sure if they'll last forever, but they have two. Two, Ben Simmons, Joel, and B. Stars to build on the next decade. Number nine. New Orleans. Forget LSU football that's shockingly good. The Saints currently are five and one. That's the second best record in the NFC.
Starting point is 02:00:24 And the Pelicans won a playoff series last year and look fantastic. Boy, you know, they've gotten really good since Boogie Cousins stopped being a Pelican. Anybody else noticed that? They're sure good with Boogie Cousins not there. So that's your top nine. Number 10? Number 10. Honolulu.
Starting point is 02:00:41 They have the current Little League World Series champions. They are right now a better sports city than New York. You know, I see this in politics all the time. Fear. Fear is what politicians use to vote for their side. Be afraid of those people. Look what they're doing to the country. Republicans say this, and Democrats say, I'll be afraid.
Starting point is 02:01:05 Oh, that side's got no morals. And this side, they're too mean. Everybody's selling fear. We're all afraid of New York because they got the guys. glamour and they got the money and they got the history. That is mostly a dysfunctional sports town. And they have New Yorkers who are not going to take kindly to you not putting them on their list. Nick's dysfunctional.
Starting point is 02:01:23 Brooklyn dysfunctional. Mets dysfunctional. Giants dysfunctional. They have that little team called the Yankees. Yankees, okay, not dysfunctional, but the John Carlos Stanton contract is an albatross. Even for their revenue streams, it is an albatross. with all the power shifting now? I don't know.
Starting point is 02:01:44 We tend to be afraid of people pulling away from us in life. I see politicians do that. This is kind of crazy that you're saying this as a Sam Darnel guy. No, no. Again, they're not a good football team. I like their future. But currently, they don't have enough offensive players. Sam Darnold's as good as his running game.
Starting point is 02:02:02 He's a 21-year-old kid. When the Jets in three games have given him a running game, he looks great. And when the Jets in three games couldn't run the football, hey, Sam, throw out. 40 times and Sam's not going to be great because they just don't have a good old line. They're all good receivers. They have a good young, tight end but they kind of have journeyman running back.
Starting point is 02:02:18 By the way, I'm not, I know everybody thinks that I love Darnold and everybody else is terrible. These rookies are exactly what they thought they would be. My concern about Josh Rosen, durability, he's hurt. My concern about Darnold, he's a little reckless. Last
Starting point is 02:02:34 week, three turnovers. My concern about Baker, he thinks he's something he's not. He's pocket passer who throws darts. When he tries to get tricky, which sometimes he's trying to add lib too much. Lamar Jackson, special, but not ready yet. And Josh Allen pushed into duty, but not ready yet. These quarterbacks are all exactly what we thought they would be. Nick Wright and Joel Clatt are on our show tomorrow. Russell Wilson of the Seahawks stopped by today. I thought Seattle was in a rebuilding mode. I think they're in less of a rebuilding
Starting point is 02:03:07 mode than I thought. I do think they'll finish second in the division to the LA Rams. But when I asked Russell Wilson, I said, you know, you watch your team this year, you're really a power running team. It's not your team. It's a power running team. I think the biggest thing for us is we want to be physical at the point of attack. And I think that obviously with Dwayne Brown being here for full time, all year, he's arguably the best left tackle in football. You know, the addition of guys of the guard positions of J.R. Sweet. J.R. Sweezy's back Super Bowl champion. We got DJ Fluker, 360 pounds, as big as it can be. And then Justin Britt in the center. And then, Fetti's doing a great job at the right tackle position.
Starting point is 02:03:47 And those guys are leading the way for us and giving us enough time to make throws, giving us enough time to be physical at the point of attack in the running game. Yeah, I mean, you know, I thought Seattle came into this season, rebuilding team. Not really a rebuilding team. Tomorrow on the show, Nick Swisher, who I saw in the hallway, I'm telling you, folks, he walks through the door at this company. at 5.15, and he is 17 espresso's in. I mean, he gets, he is so fired up. Nick Wright, Nick Swisher, Joel Clatt, Game 1 World Series at Fenway tonight on Fox. It's the hurt. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
