We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. you just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:03 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming until he's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball.

Starting point is 00:02:40 Ah, here we go. Veterans Day live in L.A. This is The Hurd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1, one hour from now on a Monday, where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong, plenty of both on a Monday, packed today.
Starting point is 00:03:02 To be the show of the week, Joy Taylor is joining me. Joy, how are you? I'm great. Good morning. Happy Veterans Day. Happy Veterans Day. Thanks so much for everybody. Guys at Fox had a great job yesterday. Terry, Kurt, Howie, Jay, Strayhand. It was just an amazing show. Jimmy Johnson. It was great yesterday up at West Point.
Starting point is 00:03:20 I want to start with this. Not all losses are bad losses. That was a great loss for the Cowboys last night. And I'll explain why. There's this sense with the Dallas Cowboys. You know, we're pretty good. We can win a division here. But there's this sense. ceiling thing. And, okay, we, you know, we can win a division.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Maybe we can win a home playoff game, but we just can't win multiple. We can't get to Super Bowls. We can't get to the championship. What in the world is our ceiling? And last night, in front of the owner, in front of you and me in America on Sunday night football, it was established what the ceiling is. The ceiling is the coach, Jason Garrett. Paydack.
Starting point is 00:04:05 He is not the problem. He was excellent last night. Darts, athletic, cool, calm, nerves of steel. When you face excellence in life, in any business, doesn't matter if it's law or landscaping, when you face excellence, it creates clarity because average people get exposed, average lawyers, average educators, average coaches, average quarterbacks, average salespeople get exposed. exposed against great. And Minnesota is, that's the best roster in the NFL. I mean, seriously, two tight ends, two receivers.
Starting point is 00:04:44 Delvin Cook, defensive front. Dak didn't get exposed. Dak was great. Dak is getting better. If you wake up this morning, you're a cowboy fan, you're like, totally controlled the line of scrimmage. Spotting guys, changing plays, poised, athletic, accurate, moving, with no running game.
Starting point is 00:05:04 but Jason Garrett against excellence last year against the Rams in the playoffs never adjusted last night cruddy play calling late the Vikings they're running screens you may want to work on it Minnesota came in with a game plan did the same game plan for three and a half hours didn't change anything they never put any heat on Kirk Cousins they literally controlled Kirk Cousins the Minnesota staff's like we got a lead we come out once again Dallas has a bad game plan falls behind Dack with no running game. You wake up this morning. Think about this.
Starting point is 00:05:38 You wake up this morning as a cowboy fan. And weren't you watching that game last night? And when Dallas was coming back and they handed the ball to Zeeke at the end of the game, you were thinking this. The hell are you doing? That's on fire. What are you taking the ball to Dax's hands for? You have never felt that before.
Starting point is 00:05:58 You've been convincing yourself for the last three years. This is Zeeke's team. and I've never bought into that. I said it when Zique was holding out. This is Dax team. Dak isn't as refined early in his career as Zique. Zique walks into this league and was
Starting point is 00:06:16 great day one. It happens. Dak wasn't. Dak needed the line. Dak needed to grow. Frankly, it's harder to play quarterback in this league than running back. Dak needed time. Now he's been given time. You watched that game last night.
Starting point is 00:06:30 As a cowboy fan, you were furious when they took the ball to Dax's hands. You were not two years ago. I'm not sure you were last year. This is Dax team. And last night we established. Dax not the problem. That's a franchise quarterback.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Directing traffic, calling plays, nerves of steel, no running game from behind against an excellent coach, an excellent defensive coach, Mike Zimmer. So that's as good as you can feel off a loss. And oh, by the way, The other thing that is, you know, Tom Brady has spent 19 years deflecting problems.
Starting point is 00:07:10 It's a gift, by the way. It is a gift if you run a company or run a football team to go to the podium after tough Sundays and always say the right thing. The best I've ever seen at it is Tom Brady. Dak, maybe second best. Here's what he said about the play calling, which was terrible. second and third down calls you went two straight runs and you guys had it going to a little with the passing game did you kind of take the ball out of your hands there I mean you got to go back and look at the situation right you don't want to leave too much time on the clock for them so I'm not going to question the play calling
Starting point is 00:07:45 there were there were opportunities we've just got to do better and execute those plays simple as that and every guy in that locker room would say that that that's as good as you can do the microphone that's as good as you can do that's what tom brayette That's what Tom Brady's been doing for 18 years. And in Dallas, is there a bigger position in American sports than Dallas Cowboy quarterback? Let's start with no one work from there. I thought last night, I left that game and I was like, you know, and you know, it's
Starting point is 00:08:14 funny about that. I said on Friday, I said, he's better than Kirk Cousins. The gap is much bigger, much, much bigger. And I'll get to that in about 10 minutes than I even thought. Let's shift to this. Patrick Mahomes is remarkable. That's been established. Some things in life have been established.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Cigarettes are bad for you, Rushland and Baas, conservative. We have established these things. Years ago, we established Aaron Rogers was amazing. But we also, as we established Patrick Mahomes is amazing, can we now acknowledge the Kansas City Chiefs with Mahomes are becoming Aaron Rogers Packers or LeBron James Cavaliers the first time? Okay, Patrick, you go be amazing. If you're not, we're going to lose.
Starting point is 00:08:57 And even if you are, we'll mostly win, but we can't guarantee you'll be able to beat Ryan Tannahill and the Titans. Kansas City's reality is they can't stop the run and they don't run enough. They're 31st in stopping the run and their bottom five in run attempts. That's their reality. And Patrick Mahomes has lost three of his last four starts. That's their reality. It's been established. He's absurdly filthy talented.
Starting point is 00:09:25 I get it. And I kept saying that about Aaron Rogers. Okay, I get it. But you want a special quarterback. Nobody would dispute that. You want special. But it can't be your only identity. That was the Packers problem from like 2011 and 2018.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Is that Aaron's great. That mostly wins. If he's not, we're doomed. And if he is, hopefully he has the ball late and the defense isn't giving a, you know, less talented quarterback the win. Ryan Tannahill just beat Patrick Mahomes. It felt like some of those Green Bay losses. You'll say, well, Aaron Rogers won a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Yeah, but didn't we always say the same thing about that? They left a lot of meat on that bone. Shouldn't they had like two Super Bowls, three? How come Aaron's only got one? And maybe Kansas City and Mahomes sneak and get one. And we're going to be like 10 years in. That's it. I mean, this is the thing.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Again, you want special at quarterback. But it can't be your only identity. Lamar Jackson Special. great coach, great running game, improving defense. Tom Brady has never, ever, ever been the sole identity of Tampa, of New England. Brady's never been the sole identity. In fact, the first five years, first couple of Super Bowls, he was a system quarterback. By the way, Russell Wilson is unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:10:47 But in those Super Bowl years, he was just trying to be a tiny part of Seattle's identity. It was Marshawn Lynch. It was the Legion of Doom. it was Pete Carroll. He's like, hey, what about me? Mahomes is Kansas City's identity. You can't do that in this league. I don't care how great you are. We watched it with Aaron Rogers. They couldn't run with Aaron. They couldn't make stops with Aaron Rogers. Lamar Jackson, Tom Brady, Russell Wilson. I mean, by the way, Jimmy Garoppolo, you're going to watch him tonight. It's terrific. But the identity is the defensive line. And then Kyle Shanahan. And then their
Starting point is 00:11:22 fullback led running game. And they got a lot of identity. And about three times a year, San Francisco is going to ask Jimmy Garoppolo, bro, defense is, we got injuries over here and we can't run the football, win it for us. Like Kansas City, you can just sense what's happening. It's the 2011 Packers to the 2018 Packers. It's too Mahom-centric. He's losing starts now to inferior quarterbacks. And it never forget this.
Starting point is 00:11:51 when Brady and remember with the Randy Moss, Wes Welker Brady teams, they were setting all the records. Those teams never won Super Bowls. Kansas City right now is set up to win Mahomes MVP awards. They're not set up to win Super Bowl. So what do you want? And I think the answer is obvious.
Starting point is 00:12:10 It's been established. Mahomes is absurd. He's going to make $40 million, which he deserves it. But if you think he's carrying the job, team now, what happens when you've got to get rid of Tyreek Hill or a right tackle or your second best corner? I just think they can't stop the run.
Starting point is 00:12:32 They don't run enough. And they feel very much like LeBron and Cleveland first time. And even the second time where you're like one title, that's all I get. I just get more. Tyree and LeBron and Kevin Love and I get one title and that's it. They won two in Miami and almost three. I like Kansas City, fun to watch. but it feels like to me they're set up to get the quarterback MVP's and not rings.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Coming up next, the gap between DAC and Kirk Cousins, which I thought was a gap, is significantly bigger this morning and why I don't feel great if I'm Minnesota and why I feel great if I'm a Dallas Cowboy fan. That is coming up. Colin right, calling wrong Monday, 50 minutes from right now. Plus Trent Dilfer, Greg Jennings, we are packed on a veteran's day. Be sure to catch live editions of the Hurstead. weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHard Radio app.

He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:15:36 What? Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time. You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a perimenopausal chin here you do. So let's talk about it. Join me on my new podcast. How hard can it be with Deanna Maria Riva,
Starting point is 00:16:13 where I call on my GenX squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate midlife's most fantastic BS. All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own. I was like, what the hell is that? I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that nest was going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex?
Starting point is 00:16:37 Dating at 45. How can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy? That one's kind of hard. Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears or tears of laughter, and dive into it unfiltered and unbothered and ask, How Hard Can It Be? I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public.
Starting point is 00:16:57 Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Diana Maria Riva as part of My Cultura Podcast Network available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks so much for stopping in on Veterans Day. Hope you had a great weekend. The West Point shots yesterday on Fox football was just unbelievable. Don't be the guy in the room. Loppy looking untuck shirt.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Untucket.com code heard, 20% off. GQ calls it perfection. So we were talking about this Joy Friday is that when you do a list of quarterbacks, you get about 12, 13 in the league. And I come and I like Dak and then Kirk Cousins. But after watching last night, stats can be very deceiving.
Starting point is 00:17:36 The gap between Dak and Kirk Cousins is actually fairly significant. Dak is several steps ahead. My bad. I thought they were like right next to each other. And I'll give me an example. If you look at the stats last night, you're like, oh, man, look at Kirk Cousins. There was never a moment in that football game.
Starting point is 00:17:54 No reasonable person watched that football game. And as you're watching Minnesota's offense, you're thinking, man, Kirk Cousins is controlling the cowboys. You are saying, Delvin Cook is a beast. Kyle Rudolph, guy, forget how good he is. Stefan Diggs, man, they got a lot of talent. Okay, 23 of 32, 111 passer rating. no picks, two touchdowns. You're looking at him and you're like, oh, man, what a night.
Starting point is 00:18:22 But after a very good game plan gets him a 14-0 lead, Kurt Cousins made a series of throws on play action because the running game was so good and had been established and he's leading in the game. So he was never uncomfortable. They rolled him out, a lot of screen stuff, play action throws, very comfortable. everybody in this league looks good like that.
Starting point is 00:18:51 DAC trailed 14-0. Minnesota's pass rushers pin their ears back. He had no-run support. He was making incredible throws. I think half his throws to Amari Cooper are out of bounds. They're so perfectly timed. They were asking DAC to throw trailing, throw against a better defense,
Starting point is 00:19:09 throw with no running game, control a defense that could pin its ears back. DAC's stats, he didn't get a throw-on play action because it had been established early. Dallas couldn't run the ball. So as a linebacker, I don't have to drop, I don't have to come up and cheat. You're not running the football. Dallas linebackers had to cheat all night because Delvin Cook is so great. So, you know, again, once again, DAC has to overcome what I view as a subpar opening
Starting point is 00:19:37 game plan, no running game, not as many play action throws, much more difficult throws, having to run a little bit more out of necessity, not game planning. I think the gap between Dak and Kirk Cousins. Now, I'm not saying Kirk Cousins doesn't deserve respect for following through with a conservative game plan once he gets a lead. I'm not saying that. Kirk was not poor. But don't just look at numbers on this.
Starting point is 00:20:05 Go look at what the quarterbacks were asked to do. One leads, one trails. One has a great running game. One doesn't. One's running for his life out of necessity. one is rolling out because it's game planned. I thought DAC was spectacular. I thought Kirk Cousins managed the game really well with a couple of nice throws.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Never really pushed, never uncomfortable. I mean, you know, it's quarterback in the NFL. It's uncomfortable for everybody at some point, except I guess Lamar Jackson, who's a magician. But, you know, it's a hard position to play. But if you look at DAC's numbers, 2846, 400 yards, three touchdowns, two receivers had over 100 yards. Here's something to remember. DAC completed 21 balls to wide receivers. Kirk Cousins, six.
Starting point is 00:20:55 I don't want to hear about the stats, and I don't want to hear about who won the game. Dak, Kirk Cousins, and it's not as close as I said it was Friday. Joy with the News. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Well, the Browns found they got their first one at home. this season. 1916 victory over the bills. Big win. Baker stepped it up with zero turnovers in his first game of the year with multiple touchdowns. And he hopes that this win can jumpstart
Starting point is 00:21:24 Cleveland for the rest of the season. We still didn't play perfect by any means. We can still learn from the film and move forward and improve. But having a tight victory against a great team is something that we needed, especially at home. You know, kind of getting the monkey up our back with that one. First win at home
Starting point is 00:21:41 in game nine is not something that usually happens, but it can get us rolling from here. I really liked that game for Cleveland yesterday. That's a good win for them. The bills are not a joke. They're not an easy out. What's with all this? What's happening?
Starting point is 00:21:56 Why are you over there smirking? You sound like my wife. What's without smirking? I felt I learned a ton about Buffalo. Most of it not good. I didn't feel I learned anything about Cleveland. They're still a weird situationally. They are a mess.
Starting point is 00:22:12 but I thought, you know, Baker did some stuff, and we know they can run the football. Nick Chubb's great. Look, they were awful in the red zone. Awful? You're being kind. Well, sometimes I'm nice. Not often. That was so bad.
Starting point is 00:22:28 It was very difficult to watch. However, they won. How you finish the game is all the matters. So you get the W. There's not like a W with, by the way, they won, but they were also awful in the red zone. That's for us to do. They got the win over Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:22:40 I agree you learn more about Buffalo than you did about I felt I learned a lot about Buffalo. Most of it is they're not, this is a limited team. But just win on Sunday. And it snapped their four-game losing streak. Odell got his most targets of the season with 12, five receptions for 57 yards, so that's good. And Nick Chubb was great as well.
Starting point is 00:22:57 So it's a good win for Cleveland. I hope they build on this. They've got the Steelers on Thursday night, so I think it ends quickly. We're getting great Thursday games. Yeah. Yeah, we're getting great Thursday games. But the Steelers played great yesterday. I mean, you can.
Starting point is 00:23:11 So did Baltimore. to take away from that. So, yeah, I mean, AFC Norris has been interesting all year. But regardless, congratulations in Cleveland, good win. Not a, well, a good win for Atlanta, but a horrible loss for the Saints. 26-9 against the one in seven Falcons. I don't know. I don't have any explanations.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Every week there's a game. And we're like, what happened? What was that? I don't understand that game. I mean, that's the league. That's how it works. It's why you can't. And especially, this is a rivalry game anyway, but to go into New Orleans and get this
Starting point is 00:23:39 win for Atlanta, that's crazy. Their defense finally showed up. Saints hadn't had a game like this in like a year. Right. Though they held, well, New Orleans obviously didn't have a touchdown and they sacked Breeze six times. But after the game, Sean Payton wasn't making any excuses, but he does expect the team to bounce back. We didn't play well enough to win today. I mean, really against anybody. You know, shame on us if we can't, you know, get those corrections made.
Starting point is 00:24:03 But that won't be a problem. It's much easier to come in and watch tape after you win. But that's one of the things about this game that, you know, creates a little bit of toughness. and grit. You know, I think it was Tony Gonzalez has said that not all losses or bad losses. Yeah. Yeah, this kind of feels like that. Like, it's an unexplainable loss
Starting point is 00:24:22 for the Saints. Saints hadn't been held without a touchdown at home with Drew Breeze as a quarterback. So this is a bizarre game. I don't think that Atlanta's turning it around this season because this game, and I don't think that you know, the Saints are this bad. If we didn't have this every weekend once or twice, we could all bet
Starting point is 00:24:38 football and be rich. The reason none of us can be rich betting football is this happening. twice a weekend in the NFL. Yeah, I mean, there's no explanation for it. I don't think there's any reason to panic. It happened in New Orleans. Really, yes, a really bad, bad loss for the Saints. So there's some things I'm sure they'll take away from it, as he said.
Starting point is 00:24:55 But that happens. Finally, Joe Burrow had a game of his life against Alabama on Saturday. What a great game. We deserved that game. God, it was great. Didn't we? We deserved that game. It was a great game.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Just who would have thought, LSU Bam, if I had told you five years ago, they're going to play football, score a hundred points. Those games are always like 10, 7. It was just a crazy big 12 shootout. Yeah, LSU had to combine 39 points in the last five games against Alabama. Well, Joe Burrow threw for 309, three yards and three touchdowns in the win. He pretty much solidified his status as the Heisman front runner with that win,
Starting point is 00:25:31 and even drew one very bold comparison from CBS analyst Rick New Heisle. That guy, and I said it before, is Tom Brady. He is going to be a remarkable. NFL player. He's got great accuracy. He's got a great sense of anticipation. That's the thing you're looking for most when you're making the transition from college to pro. I want to say this right now before we get any further. You will, all of you, stop comparing Joe Burrow to Tom Brady. I refuse to allow you to put that on this young man. Okay. Tom Brady is the single greatest quarterback that has ever breeds air on this our planet Earth. And arguably the best
Starting point is 00:26:12 football player as well. But Burrow did get himself a top 10 draft pick. He was already a top 10 draft pick. But yes, this was an incredible life-changing game for him. He was magnificent. But let's relax on the Tom Brady stuff.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Please, I beg of you. He was good. I'll tell you something. Tua was good. Tua had a warrior game. You can't say anything bad about Tua in that game. Especially, like, all heart. I watched that game and I thought, If Tua goes one and Joe Burrow goes two, I'm like, and then Justin Herbert at Oregon, who I've had two NFL scouts tell me is the easiest, easiest evaluation ever.
Starting point is 00:26:50 He's going to go. We got three quarterbacks now in college. They're going to walk into this league and are going to be really good. For multiple reasons, I'm leaning Joe Burrow at this point. Not only was that a great win, he also had to transfer. He said to overcome stuff. That's interesting. He looked like just the way he was moving out there was NFL ready.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Do you know he's an all-state basketball player? I didn't know that. Yeah, no, he's like a real. He's a gamer. He's, you know, so, and by the way, Brady, we forget this. Brady was drafted in baseball. So it's like, Burrow and Brady actually, they're real athletes. I'm very excited to see him at the next level. But he, but let's stop with the Tom Brady stuff, please.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Okay, that's fair. That's fair. 30 minutes from now, Colin right, Colin wrong, Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. Now, Greg Jennings didn't have that kind of athletic ability. He was a possession receiver.
Starting point is 00:27:39 Come on. Can't joke? I can't. No, don't ever joke like that. Ever. 4-4-5. 4-4-1. My bad.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Yeah, get it right. So that was a great college game. Holy moly. That was four hours of just fun. Okay, so I said this earlier. If I'm a cowboy fan, there was a moment last night, and I thought it was a great moment. I never butt into this, it's Zeke's team.
Starting point is 00:28:05 I always said, no, it's Dax team. And when Dack and Amari and Tyron Smith are healthy, I think they could win without a great running game. But late in that game, when they took the ball to Dax's hands, cowboy fans sat at their kid at home and went, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, what are you doing? Giving the ball, what are you doing giving the ball to Zeeke? That, to me, was a moment of clarity. We have established this is not Zeeq's team.
Starting point is 00:28:28 You were mad as a cowboy fan when they handed it off to Zique. You were like, what are you doing, right? I was more disappointed because of what had transpired leading up to that point. You hadn't been able to run the ball. hadn't won the line of scrimmage battle, offensive line, specifically in the running game. As far as pass protection, they were giving DAC a lot of time, and he was picking them apart in the secondary.
Starting point is 00:28:52 So, yes, naturally you would want the ball in your playmaker's hands. And specifically, given who or what's been working, and that was DAC in the passing game. And by the way, Dak is like a little bit, he's got a little NBA thing. Sometimes he's not, maybe it's not an elegant natural thrower. He gets hot. He was hot in the fourth. I mean, his ball was on the money.
Starting point is 00:29:18 He was red hot late in that game. I got to tell you something. I watched Dak yesterday. I was blown away by him. No running game. Mostly running to escape. Had to come from behind. I think Minnesota is really good.
Starting point is 00:29:30 I was blown away by Dak. They are. I like what Dak Prescott has been able to do all year. Regardless of who his opponents have been, he has made up in his mind I'm not going to be the reason why and last night he played well enough for them to win that football game
Starting point is 00:29:47 when you look at a team who has 24 first downs zero rushing the football and this is who this is what we're saying our identity is we're running football team we're a power we're pounded down your throat football team zero first downs rushing
Starting point is 00:30:06 like Put that in perspective. No, no, no. I mean, again, it's nothing against Kirk Cousins, but once he got a lead, you never said Kirk Cousins is controlling the game. I mean, it was the running game. It was unbelievable. And I like Kirk, but there's a big difference in this league throwing on third and two,
Starting point is 00:30:24 and the linebackers, Van Derresh and Jalen, are jammed up. And I got a nice little cushion. Dak didn't have that cushion by the late second court. He didn't have any of that cushion stuff. All right, let's shift to this. And this is really good for you today because I always. I always felt that your Packer teams should have won at least one more Super Bowl. You had talent, receiver talent, Aaron.
Starting point is 00:30:46 But I always felt that Aaron was too much of the identity. Tom's never been the sole identity of them. Russell Wilson was trying to be a little bit of Seattle's identity in their dynasty. Deshaun Watson's got a front of defensive players, terrific perimeter players. I feel Mahomes in Kansas City. are becoming Aaron and Green Bay for about a seven-year stretch. They are so dependent on him to be great. They can't run.
Starting point is 00:31:14 They can't stop it. He was great yesterday. And they alludes to the Tennessee Titans and Ryan Tannahill. Yeah, I think what's, again, disappointing about the Kansas City Chiefs is I thought the same thing. But then when Patrick Mahomes went down, their defense showed us that they can be one of the top defenses in the game. Why aren't they then? because they rely and they get comfortable. When you have kind of what you would look at as a safety valve in Patrick Mahomes,
Starting point is 00:31:45 he's a magician back there. He can get us out of, he covers a multitude of sense. Sure. Basically is what. That was Aaron. Yes. And so you tend to lax. You tend not to be as aggressive for whatever reason.
Starting point is 00:31:59 Oh, great. And I don't like it. When we saw Matt Moore at quarterback, their defensive play calling. and their defensive, just a positioning was completely different. Their mindset, their approach to the game, it was almost like, okay, we need to make sure we put our offense in great position. That doesn't change because Patrick Mahomes is back on the field. You are a much better team.
Starting point is 00:32:23 It's funny. It's a real thing in the NFL. It is. I don't get it. And it's frustrating for not only both sides of the ball, but a coach. Because you're like, how great can we really be if both sides of the ball? of the ball click at the same time. Yeah. I want to dig deep in the Green Bay game on really one specific thing.
Starting point is 00:32:45 So I have this kind of theory that, listen, it may happen once every two or three weeks, but you get a gift from the officials. Green Bay got a gift call from the officials, and the weather was getting worse. You've been in those games. You're like, oh, winter's here. And it's happening right during the game. So Matt LaFlewer is a young coach. And I thought, and let me go back to the college game, LSU Bama, weekend. It got established pretty soon in that game if you're LSU. Oh, they can't stop us. We can't stop them.
Starting point is 00:33:13 We can't go old LSU. LSU never stopped throwing. Even late. They're like, we just, so in the middle of the game, Ed Orgeron's like, fellas, we can't eat the clock. So this happens all the time, Greg. You have a game plan. You get into a game and the game changes. So you get into that game
Starting point is 00:33:32 last night. Here comes the snow. Carolina's good, every point matters now. This is not going to be a crazy shootout. You can't see. And they had a chance to kick a field goal end of the first half. It snow's getting worse. Footing's getting worse. And I thought they made a mistake. Forget that play calling. Give it to your second best running back. When the weather gets cold and winter hits, Matt Lafleur, I thought, didn't go, okay, I just got a gift from the league. Get points. Get the ball in the second half. The game is changing. Is that a fair criticism? No. Why not? No, it is not. I can. completely disagree because had they converted on that possession and got points,
Starting point is 00:34:11 then we're not even talking about this. We're talking about how great of a call, how gutsy of a call, how risky of a call it was, because it would have worked. But the fact that it didn't work, I didn't have a problem with it because as a coach, you're looking at your players, you're looking at your offensive unit and you're saying, okay, how are my guys performing? Are they having success? The Green Bay Packers in the first half was having.
Starting point is 00:34:35 tremendous amount of success, both passing the ball as well as running the ball. Did they get the penalty to help sustain the drive? Yes, they're down inside the two-yard line, and they have an opportunity to get three points or possibly go up with a touchdown and then get the ball in the second half. You're looking at your offense saying, I like our odds, I like our chances. So you take the chance and you go for the points, you go for the, really the nail in the coffin, if you will, and it doesn't work. But you get the ball in the second half and you come out and you score anyway.
Starting point is 00:35:09 So no. Okay. Let's go to another situational moment. End of the game. You're getting, again, it's blurry, it's cold. Two times you jump off sides. That's why Kansas City didn't make the Super Bowl. You line up off sides.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Situationally, again, I hope this is a learning moment for your Packers because I'm like. So, I mean, are we blaming Matt LaFleur for the? It never happens to Belichick's teams. Stop it. I don't remember. You can't do that. No, when guys jump outside every single week. At that time?
Starting point is 00:35:44 It doesn't matter. At the end of the day, and this is what I love about sport, you got to play the game for 60 minutes. It doesn't matter what the game looks like, how ugly or how great or cute it looks. Did the Green Bay Packers win yesterday? So it's all about winning. You know, Joy, is it all about winning? I believe they measured and wins. Hey, some of us, some of us have values.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Life's more about winning. It's about building stuff, families, futures, companies. Yeah, that's all winning. That's all in the win column. You've never had a win and came off the field and thought, God, Cleveland yesterday. You're not concerned. Let's talk Cleveland. So you come off that game you win.
Starting point is 00:36:24 You're not thinking yourself, we are a disaster situationally. Look, they are thinking, who, we got, at least we won. Really? Period. Well, that's how winners think. No, it's not how winners think, but when you win, and regardless, if we're talking about even the New England Patriots, whether it's a good win or what we call or classify as a bad win,
Starting point is 00:36:47 the fact that you're able to win shows us, okay, they understand how to win ugly. They know how to win when it looks good. So yesterday with Cleveland, eight touches, just a mess. And I would come out of that. Belichick would come out of that and say, I don't want to hear, I don't want any high-fives. You're right. That was awful.
Starting point is 00:37:09 You're right. And in Cleveland, it's Mardi Gras. That's the difference. No, it's not Mardi Gras. They understand where they are. They're not the New England Patriots. They needed a win desperately. So how do you think the Buffalo bills feel?
Starting point is 00:37:20 Better or worse than Cleveland? Buffalo is going to make the playoffs potentially. Nope, nope. After yesterday's loss in Cleveland's win. I think they look at themselves and they don't feel great. because they don't. Period. They don't feel great.
Starting point is 00:37:35 I'm not saying all losses make you feel great. What I'm saying is all wins shouldn't make you feel great. If I'm Cleveland, that didn't show me anything. There's still a dysfunctional mess when it matters situationally. I didn't get anything out of that game. I don't think any of us are saying that, but a win is a win. So you have to walk away with at least that under your belt saying, okay, guys, we have something to build on.
Starting point is 00:37:59 When you lose, it's like, guys, I mean, the sky is falling. We got to change this. We got to fix this. We got to reinvent who we are. And that's what the Cleveland Browns don't have to do this morning. Do they have a lot of work to do? I knew you when you were more than just winning.
Starting point is 00:38:19 One more thing. You live in Minnesota. Dak is significantly better than Kirk Cousins. Like that was established last night, right? Yes. Like the gap is way bigger than we think. Yes. Dag Prescott is he's embarking upon that elite quarterback status.
Starting point is 00:38:36 And he's getting better. He is. He is year four. Kirk Cousins is year eight. And when you look at the trajectory, I'm going with Dak Prescott with no questions. No questions asked. I look at Kurt Cousins and I say, okay, are we really making him better or is he making us better? and the Minnesota Vikings are making Kirk Cousins look better.
Starting point is 00:39:02 And DAC last night kept the Cowboys in the game. Yes. It's the only reason why they were even involved in that game last night. I always felt Dak was better than Kirk. And then last night I watched it and I'm like, why do I keep not just acknowledge this? It's not that close. No. And Dak's getting better and moving up.
Starting point is 00:39:20 You know what? This morning, Dax's a top 10 quarterback in the league. I can say that. Yeah. I don't have any problem saying that at all. I'm not even, and I felt he was growing now. I think he's way closer to 10 than 1, but I thought last night he kept them in the game.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Yeah, and the unfortunate thing about Dak Prescott is we judge him in the moment. And so with them being 5 and 4 and them losing the games that we feel like they should win, it's all going to wait on the shoulders of Dak Prescott. But I will be the one to remind you, he is only second behind the guy in New England and wins. So he does win games. Before he wasn't putting up the numbers. Now he's second in passing. He's second in yards averaging.
Starting point is 00:40:06 It's the Russell Wilson thing. It is. At some point you're like, oh, he's second all time in the history of the world in everything. So you've got to give him credit. Yeah, we had a hard time giving it to Russell because he did come in with Marshaun Lynch and the defense. Then at some point you're like, what are we doing here? He's great.
Starting point is 00:40:21 Let's stop the arguing. Dax really, I don't know if they'll ever be Russell, but I'm watching last time. I'm like, what will be doing here? All right. Not bad for you. I appreciate it. You started, I think you came around. All I do is win.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Win is not everything in life, kids. All I do is win. This shows about sending messages to American youth. It's not about winning. All right, I got to take a break. Coming up next, I saw something this weekend. It's changing the way I think about quarterback play. It literally is changing the way I think about quarterback play.
Starting point is 00:40:49 That's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Welcome to my new podcast. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about,
Starting point is 00:41:26 wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.

Starting point is 00:42:57 This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:43:22 Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time. You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a parameda apostle chin here you do. So let's talk about it. Join me on my new podcast. How hard can it be with Deanna Maria Riva, where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate midlife's most fantastic BS. All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own.
Starting point is 00:43:51 I was like, what the hell is that? I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that Ness was going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex? Dating at 45. How hard can it be? How can it be? How can it be? How can it be?
Starting point is 00:44:08 That one's kind of hard now? Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter, and dive into it, unfiltered and unbothered and ask, how hard can it be? I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public. Starting point is 00:44:56 That's my new reality. If I don't want to spend a lot of money on gas, I got to drive, I got a hitchhike, I got to walk, but that's my new reality. You know, going to an airport now, lines are longer, economies good, more people are flying, security measures have been heightened over the last 10 years. The new reality, you can complain about it all you want,
Starting point is 00:45:15 but the new reality is get to an airport earlier. So I'm watching Tua and Joe Burroughs on Saturday, but specifically Tua. I'm watching Sam Darnold yesterday. I'm watching Kyler Murr. I'm watching Lamar Jackson, and I'm watching DAC last night. The new reality is we've got to stop treating quarterback like an either-or. Either you've got a pocket guy or I've got a mobile athlete.
Starting point is 00:45:40 I want both. I'm not interested in statues. We have a new reality in this league, and you're really seeing it this weekend. Outside of the Dallas Cowboys, there are very few elite offensive lines, and the Cowboys drafted their offensive line from places like LSU, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, power running teams. And a lot of those offensive linemen have been in the league seven years. College football is no longer a power running.
Starting point is 00:46:08 LSU throws the ball of the field. Alabama throws the ball of the field. Clemson. These are traditional power running. They're throwing them all of the field. And because of that, the offensive linemen in college football now are all in these spread offenses. They're not road graders.
Starting point is 00:46:23 So offensive line play is deteriorating badly in this league. We thought the Rams had a good old line two years ago. It's a mess. I mean, there's Dallas and there's everybody else. And I'm watching old Philip Rivers Thursday night. I'm watching Jared Goff. I'm watching Breeze. And those guys, I mean, if they don't have an offensive line,
Starting point is 00:46:44 they're not the same player. Being elusive now, I'm watching Sam Darnold yesterday. The Jets offensive line is a tragedy. He is just making stuff happen out of nothing. Now, Lamar Jackson played against Cincinnati, but I mean, Donald was spectacular. Kyler Murray yesterday, running for his life, that game is a blowout without Kyler Murray.
Starting point is 00:47:06 I am blown away by him. And Donald and Kyler Murray, Donald's numbers, if you didn't watch that game, you have no understanding of it. Even his best plays running for his life, Kyler Murray got jobbed at the end of that game. There was a pass interference they didn't call Arizona, should have had a chance to win that game late, is I'm not even looking for either or anymore.
Starting point is 00:47:26 If my pocket guy can't move, I'm out. And, I mean, you watch the Chargers and you're like, that doesn't work anymore. And it's easy to say you're overreacting. I don't think I am. Now, I still like Jared Goff, but because they spent so much money on Todd Gurley early and Goff and Brandon Cooks and Jalen Ramsey very soon, they're not going to be able to have an elite offensive line. And so I'm watching that Saturday LSU Bama game.
Starting point is 00:47:51 I'm like Joe Burroughs, yeah, the throwing part's great. But the fact that he's an all-state basketball player and he can move around. I'm like, Washington's got a great quarterback. You've got to be able to move now. We have a new reality in the NFL. Offensive line play stinks. And the Cowboys is the exception. And they got their guys mostly from power running football teams that don't mostly exist in college football.
Starting point is 00:48:16 When LSU Bama get into a shootout, college football is officially changed. Nick Saban can't stop anybody now with a good quarterback. He can't stop anybody. So that's one thing. And by the way, ask yourself this. What's easier to do? Fix your offensive line with five guys or just draft a kid that can move around a little bit and teach him like Lamar and Dak.
Starting point is 00:48:38 Okay, I need you to be a little more of a pocket guy because I saw Dak in college. I thought he was Tebow with a better arm. Dak's getting better. We're going to give you the weapons. We're going to run the football a little bit. It's like social media. stay current or you disappear. You've got to stay current.
Starting point is 00:48:53 And I'm seeing an NFL league right now. Donald and Kyler Murray yesterday were sensational. Colin right, Colin wrong, top of next hour. I got a lot of stuff going on. For the record, tonight's Monday night football game is going to be spectacular. San Francisco and San Seattle play. I'll go back to LSU Bama one more time. Is that what is so exciting in this league right now to me?
Starting point is 00:49:19 And Lamar is just is crazy. I worry that how long can it last? I've always said, running quarterbacks work, they just don't last very long. But when I sat and watched college football Saturday, I'm like, I think the first three picks in the draft are going to be quarterbacks. I think they're all going to work. They're all going to be good. It is an incredibly exciting time right now in football in America. And I'm watching Lamar and I'm watching Kyler and I'm watching Darnold and I'm watching Dak.
Starting point is 00:49:42 And I'm like, I love this football. I love the quality of football on Saturdays. I love it on Sundays. no huddles, more plays. I can remember years ago going to a game in Seattle, Washington. It was Boise State in Washington, and I turned to my friend Brian and I said, oh my God,
Starting point is 00:49:58 there were no huddles today. I'm like, I'd never been to a football game live with no huddles, and we sat there, and there must have been 95 plays, and I'm like, this is incredible. It's just play after, play after play. And now you've added a dimension. College football's all spread out, and the quarterback's now coming to the NFL
Starting point is 00:50:13 are all great athletes. This thing's only going to get crazier. I mean, Cam Newton almost feels old school. An old beat-up camp. Cam six years ago, we were like, Cam's like, I've never seen anything like Cam. He and Big Ben were revolutionary. Now they just
Starting point is 00:50:30 look old and beat up. I think football right now has never been more fun to watch the quarterback position. Colin Wright, Colin Wrong, coming up on a Monday next. Starting point is 00:55:03 It was nuts. It was like nothing moved. Just everyone just be quiet for a second and have to watch the end of this. So I was flying back. So I flew back from Salt Lake this weekend. I flew back. I was up in the mountains with my wife. And so I knew when I was flying back, I would be on Delta and I'd have multiple screens.
Starting point is 00:55:20 And I watched the NFL network and stuff. The Jets Giants game, I know those teams aren't any good. Oh, it was so fun. Wildly entertaining. It was Darnal was making plays. And Daniel Jones, John. Giant receivers playing great. Like in this league, when you get two teams that are going nowhere and it's just fireworks everywhere,
Starting point is 00:55:39 it is so much fun to watch. So we do it on Monday. I have strong opinions. That's what I do. But I think I have to hold myself accountable. And so we call it Colin Wright, Colin Wrong over the last week or two. Here we go. Where Colin was right.
Starting point is 00:55:52 Ian Rappaport reports Cam Newton is likely to be traded from Carolina. And we call this one. They've got a new owner. They want a new direction. Cam had lost eight, nine straight starts. He feels distracted. Injuries have piled up. I don't think Kyle Allen's a special quarterback talent.
Starting point is 00:56:10 I think he's a very good transitional quarterback. You could possibly win a division if you're not paying Kyle Allen anything and can surround him with the right pieces. But as the injuries have piled up and he is not a precision thrower and the league often demands it, now I will say the good news for Cam is if Patrick Mahomes makes 40, he's going to make about 25. there's a bargain value here for some lousy teams. But this feels like the new owner sort of doesn't care about the past. Too inconsistent, too hurt. They're moving off cam.
Starting point is 00:56:44 Where Colin was wrong. Mike Tomlin, if they make the playoffs, does he get coach of the year? No A-B, no Lavian Bell, no Big Ben. I bailed on him. I said season's over, not interested. They have done an unbelievable job. They have an identity. And their front seven defensively, this organization can flat out draft
Starting point is 00:57:01 people. Mason Rudolph, not my cup of tea, but I thought yesterday on third down and situationally, he was very good. Mike Tomlin deserves, and I've been critical of him, that he's too emotional, his teams can be, you know, dumb penalties and not buttoned up. This may be his best coaching job. How many people can he lose? I mean, by the way, even the best part of his team, defense, it's a bunch of kids. I mean, the front seven is just a bunch of kids. I mean, the front seven is just a bunch of kids. And right now they'd be the second wild card team in the AFC good for Mike Tomlin. Where Colin was right. But I did love when the Steelers went and got Minka Fitzpatrick for a first rounder and they got a lot of
Starting point is 00:57:42 heat. People said, well, Big Ben's hurt. You need that first round pick to get a quarterback. And I said, no, no, no, no, no. A, Minkin Fitzpatrick is great. B, he plays a position. They've been trying to fill for years. And C, this franchise has always been about playmaking defensive guys. And Mika Fitzpatrick has more touchdowns than Odell Beckham this year. And you have no guarantees in the first round what you're going to get. I mean, a third of the first round either busts or underachieves. He's a remarkable player.
Starting point is 00:58:10 He fits their culture. He's going to get paid and should get paid. And by the way, you're not paying any of the other young defensive players because you've drafted so well. The rest of them are on the cheap. So you've got to pay somebody. And I would pay Big Ben and pay my offensive line and I'd pay Minka Fitzpatrick. We love the deal. I have no problem giving up a first round pick.
Starting point is 00:58:29 I get a guy that fits my culture, makes plays, and is unbelievable, and he's all of them. Where Colin was wrong. Wow, did I miss on LSU, Bama? Nick Saban against Ed Ors-Ran off a buy. First of all, LSU was better early, better middle, and better late. And LSU now is not only throwing the ball, but they're a hyper-aggressive passing offense. Saban off a by was completely overwhelmed, and this is becoming a trend for Nick Saving. And six weeks to prepare for Clemson, doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:59:02 Off a by against LSU. When he faces a Trevor Lawrence or to Sean Watson or a Joe Burrow, who's a first-round quarterback, the game has changed. Alabama can't stop him. Joe Burrow got himself a Heisman and got himself a top-10 pick. And Ed Orgeron, let me tell you something. There is not a college coach in America that feels more like his school than Ed Orgeron feels with Louisiana and LSU.
Starting point is 00:59:27 He will never leave LSU. ever, at least on his accord. I was totally wrong on that game. LSU used to be great but boring. They're a blast to watch now. Where Colin was right. Told you three weeks ago, I said that Eagle Cowboy game, it's not the end of the world.
Starting point is 00:59:45 Philadelphia is going to be fine with a loss, and Dallas hasn't secured anything with a win. Here we are three weeks later, and they're tied at the top of the NFC East. Listen, Dallas isn't great enough to pull away, and Philadelphia's too good, to be blown away. They're both, I think Dallas is, to be honest with it,
Starting point is 01:00:04 Deshawn Jackson's done for the year, so I'm more on the Dallas side now than I'm on the Philadelphia side. But neither team is great enough to pull away from the other. I don't think either is San Francisco. I don't think either's really New Orleans, despite what you saw yesterday.
Starting point is 01:00:20 So we said this. Philadelphia and Dallas are going to week 16 and week 17. If you look at their schedule, Philadelphia has now got New England. They'll probably lose that. Dallas has Detroit, so Dallas will probably pull ahead by a game. But if you look at the schedules, this thing was never over when they met three weeks ago, and it's not going to be over after this weekend. Where Colin was wrong.
Starting point is 01:00:43 Listen, I like Jared Gough, but he and McVeigh, we've got to put it on pause here. Because of what they've paid in Los Angeles and what they're going to pay for Jalen Ramsey, they got offensive line issues. Goff is not athletic enough to overcome a bad interior offensive line and no running game. He looks vulnerable. At times he looks overwhelmed. He made several horrible throws yesterday, and they're locked in on him.
Starting point is 01:01:10 Now, I do believe if you give him protection, his prototype is Matt Ryan. I think he actually throws a better deep ball than Matt Ryan. I think he's talented. I don't think suddenly he's terrible. But I've been high on Jared Goff, and he's been exposed as their offensive line issues have come to the foref. front. Where Colin was right? The Titans are now three and one after moving off Marcus Marioota, who to me was hurt too much and had an incredibly low ceiling and is a nonverbal guy at a verbal position. Listen, Ryan Tannahill is just better than we all think. You know, Ryan Tannahill's
Starting point is 01:01:42 career record in the league is 45 and 47 and that's with a lot of chaos in Miami. This franchise kept trying to convince itself they could just squeeze a little more offense at a Marcus Mario, and it's like, no, Ryan Tannihil's better. Ryan Tanyhill's a better player than, and And yesterday you saw it. By the way, three of the four games, he's led them. Tanyhill has on a game-winning drive. He was a, by the way, you're not getting less athleticism. Tanyl's a very good athlete.
Starting point is 01:02:07 He was a receiver in college. So he's a real big-time athlete. He gives you mobility. He doesn't get, he's got one big injury. He doesn't get hurt a lot. He's a very good player, and the Titan should have moved off this. I mean, to me, I think I said this on the show. If I'd have had Tannihil and Mariotta in camp,
Starting point is 01:02:23 I'd have just gone with Tantahill. I mean, you'd given Mariota all the time you had to. he have to show you. Tannale's a better player and we've seen it. Where Colin was wrong. I was like the rest of the media dummies where when John Gruden traded Khalil Mack, I said, that's a terrible move because my theory is
Starting point is 01:02:39 you're in a division with Patrick Mahomes. You can't get rid of your only pass rusher. But you know what? I got to give Gruden credit. He had a plan. He's hit on his draft picks. You know, Khalil Mack I don't think was in love with the Gruden situation. And Gruden probably thought, all right, I got to get
Starting point is 01:02:55 guys who buy into my my thing, and he's done a very good job. Offensively, they've hit on their running back, they hit on their tight end, almost all their offensive pieces. Richie Incognito, their free agents, their draft picks. And in the end, they don't have a pass rush. And we don't think they're a Super Bowl team, but they wouldn't have been a Super Bowl team with Khalil Mack and without Josh Jacobs, the running back, who they got because of the trade. So, you know, at the end of the day, Chicago got a great player, but Oakland got great players who are young and cheap. And I think the Gruden things working. I was a little too hyperbolic and I was wrong. Where Colin was right.
Starting point is 01:03:30 And I said this a couple weeks ago, you can be winless and well coached. If you are tanking, Miami Dolphins were winless and I said, no, no, no, don't tell me they're not well coached. They're just winless. There's a difference. Does any team in the league, I mean, how many games have they let in? Their game plans are great. They don't, you know, they have a roster mostly of backups and average guys. But this is a well-coached team that plays its butt off, that takes leads in a lot of games that goes on the road. Miami teams you never trust on the road in November.
Starting point is 01:04:04 They totally brought into Brian Flores. I think we found the Belichick guy who's going to work. They play hard. They have absolute limitations offensively. But this idea that you can have a team that's losing, but they're not well-coached, listen, Ryan Fitzpatrick, we got a ceiling here. offensive line. We got a ceiling here. Defensively. They need more players.
Starting point is 01:04:28 But we said it a few weeks ago when they were winless. That team has a direction. They're playing with a porpoise. I know a bad joke, but it's ours. And frankly, they're in all these games. They took a lead on Dallas. I mean, they're in games. They just run out of gas. Where Colin was wrong.
Starting point is 01:04:44 Lamar Jackson. You know, listen, I said he was draftable. I just said the passing thing is going to be more, it's going to take time. Let him run around as he figures out passing. He's just better earlier than I thought. You know, I thought, I said before the draft, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are projects. Josh Allen is a project. Lamar Jackson's really good. And he's getting better at the past thing.
Starting point is 01:05:05 Like, you know, I thought he was a little last year. And you're like, yeah, there's some limitations here. No, no, not really. He throws it well. He's comfortable as heck. And they've done it now. They've done a great job to put the right people around him. But, you know, I said Lamar Jackson was draftable.
Starting point is 01:05:20 To me, Baker Mayfield, not my cup of tea, is not draftable. Lamar is way better, way earlier than I thought. He also in the offseason put on weight, totally coachable. The kid's fun. He's spectacular. And I still think I take Deshawn Watson over in. Let's not go crazy here. He's got about a season full of starts.
Starting point is 01:05:42 But his growth is, you know, if you can't see it, I can't help you. You know, if you're not seeing how much better he's getting it, sitting in that pocket and throwing the ball, there's nothing I can do for you. because he's really learning, and they remain one of the fun teams in the NFL to watch. All right, where Colin's right, where Colin is wrong. Got some thoughts on the future of the NFC West. You'll see it tonight with Seattle and San Francisco. I don't think it's the Rams for a couple of reasons, not yesterday specifically.
Starting point is 01:06:10 Trent Dilfer's around the corner, can't wait for that on a Monday. Veterans Day, thank you all so much for taking time. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 01:08:43 What? Time out. Quarterback on office, Blue, 42. Dude. Hey, Rhett, Mom, I want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifferts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. American soccer is about to explode.
Starting point is 01:09:10 The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on to Ernie Stewart for Chip. I'm Ty Bramos. I'm Tom Bo. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Polisic. I'm not worried about. Balagan, I'm not worried about McKinney.
Starting point is 01:09:31 My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here.
Starting point is 01:09:52 Experience it all with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. Great to have you in, folks. Michelin Endurance X-D Silicon Wiper Blades last two times longer, available at Walmart. Check him out. He won his first playoff game.
Starting point is 01:10:15 How about that? That is fantastic. A decade and a half in the NFL, my friend, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Trent and Dilfer via the Coward Global Satellite Network at Lipscom Academy head football coach now. You've got one. You're not Belichick yet. Don't go crazy.
Starting point is 01:10:29 You've got a playoff win. Don't go crazy yet. So let's start with this. There are, I think average people get overwhelmed against excellent people. And I think Minnesota is excellent. And DAC against an excellent defense, I thought was sensational last night. With no running game, not a lot of play action stuff. He had to save their bacon.
Starting point is 01:10:51 Jason Garrett, I didn't like to play calling. I don't want to beat up on that. Didn't make adjustments. I thought Minnesota kind of did what they did, and they did it for three and a half hours, the screen game. I think there was clarity last night for Dallas. If we're going to bark about the ceiling, I worry more about the coach than the quarterback. That's my takeaway from last night. Any of that you buy?
Starting point is 01:11:12 I completely buy the quarterback stuff. I too thought DAC was phenomenal. I thought he showed the fullness of who he can be as an NFL quarterback. He showed all the talent stuff, the arm strength, the accuracy. He showed the creativeness. He showed the ability to extend play. show toughness and go on and on and on. I'll push back on the Jason Garrett stuff.
Starting point is 01:11:37 I think it's more a defensive staff thing. I think defensively, they haven't made adjustments since the playoffs last year where they got ran over. And it's the same schemes that keep beating them. It's the outside zone. It's a physical downhill iso play off the outside zone. It's movement passed by the quarterback and it screams. And it's the same stuff.
Starting point is 01:12:00 over and over and over again that is getting this defense torch. They're a talented defense, but they're kind of a one-trick pony. Yeah. They got to get up field. They got to hit the quarterback. They got to create back fuel pressure. But if you neutralize that, then they don't get a lot of stops. So, and I know Rod Marinelli really well, and I think he probably understands the same thing.
Starting point is 01:12:21 And he's back on the drawing board today saying, until we can do that, until we can play the knockback game, not just the speed game. it's going to be a long season for that defense. I want to talk about, so I don't want to overreact to this, but we have a new reality in our life where college football is doing a lot of spread and the offensive linemen come into this league, and they're not the bulldozers, they were even seven, eight years ago. Even LSU and Bama now is a shootout.
Starting point is 01:12:48 I mean, that's when college football has changed. And I'm watching Darnold yesterday make plays, and Kyler Murray and Lamar and Dak and Mahomes. And I think I used to be in either organization. guy. You're a pocket guy or you're a move guy. And I'm like, no, you've got to be elusive now. Like, I can't have one of the other or I think less of you. Am I overreacting to a crazy day of mobile quarterbacks yesterday? No, I don't think so. We've been talking about this for four, five, six years now. A couple of things happened. And I'll just say 10 years ago, when I jumped into
Starting point is 01:13:21 Elite 11 in the kind of high school camp series, we saw two things that were starting to happen. But number one, offensive linemen, we're losing knockback. So because of spread, because of two-point stances, because tight ends not being attached next to the tackle, because more of a lateral run game, offensive linemen started losing that ability to knock you back. So we just call it knockback football. Low hat football has kind of disappeared from the offensive line play nationwide.
Starting point is 01:13:48 Along on that time, we also saw a bunch of quarterbacks to be at these camps, say from six years ago, 10 years ago, you'd show up there'd be 50 quarterbacks at a camp. You know what they'd be? They'd be 6.3. They'd be lanky, a little uncoordinated, not the best athlete at the school, but they want to be a quarterback. Usually a rich dad, usually a good high school football coach. And that was kind of who your camp series was. Well, about six, five, four years ago, we start going to these camps. You know what you found? The best athlete at the school is playing quarterback. The best athlete. He's big. He's physical. He's fast. He's twitchy. He can
Starting point is 01:14:25 throw. He's been trained well. He is the dude. He's the dude of dudes. And I think now what you're seeing in the NFL is an offensive line generation that isn't as physical. And you have the best athlete who's been trained to play quarterback all these years. And he's the guy with the football. And what you're going to get out of that is a more mobile athletic guy, just a better athlete. But you're also going to get a really good quarterback. Yeah. Because he's had thousands of reps of playing quarterback from high school to college to now the NFL. And it's not going to change because guess what? We'll go back on the road this offseason. We'll see 750 quarterbacks and 300 of them are going to be the best athlete at their school. You know, tonight it's San Francisco and Seattle and that feels like
Starting point is 01:15:10 the future of the NFC West, not the Rams. And I think McVe can coach and I think golf can throw. But this organization, it feels like when LeBron came into town, they said, you know what, from a business perspective, we've got to pay some stars here. Their offensive line is, I'm sorry, Trent, it is a major, major problem. Does that, and not golf and not leave A. Is that explaining L.A.'s problem now? Yeah, not having Brandon Cooks to kind of go beat, beep, create some space, not having the physical run game.
Starting point is 01:15:42 It's really all built off that and then be able to action pass off of it. So really what they've built this thing around is having a dude at receiver that has unique, Twitch, unique speed that can kind of create some fear. He's banged up. You have your back who's not the same. You have your offensive linemen that aren't executing kind of the foundation of what they want to do offensively in the run game. And then your quarterback is his DNA is really kind of like Derek Carr.
Starting point is 01:16:10 He'd rather stick it in the belly and put his back to the defense, turn around, and pierce the defense. And now you have him dropping back 30 plus times a game and true drop back pass with an offensive lineman that can't mask their flaws with three. play action and it's a recipe for disaster. It's not what they want to be. It's not what Sean is at his best at coaching. It's not how they had their success. So they got to refine themselves. And it really has to be with great and more physicality on the offensive line, running the ball better, higher run volume numbers in the course of a game so that you can get the most
Starting point is 01:16:43 out of your quarterback. Do you worry that Kansas City, I said this to start my show today, Kansas City is starting to feel like the 2011 to 2018 Green Bay Packers. Aaron had to be great to win. If he wasn't, they lost. And even when he was great, they would often get beat by inferior quarterbacks. Kansas City now doesn't run the ball. They can't stop it and they don't run it. This thing feels a little derailed to me.
Starting point is 01:17:09 Or is it just that Patrick's not 100%. Oh, Patrick's fine. I mean, not even 100%. He was brilliant yesterday. I mean, he carried that team. I think you just want to make it very simple. Their defense isn't physical enough. You can't let any team get back in a game running the football.
Starting point is 01:17:27 I mean, if you think now, Tannenhole was great in the second half, but they really got back to that game running the football down your throats. And you got to be able to run the football. You can't make the quarterback's job that hard every single week, even when he's a generational talent. And we talked about this with Aaron. Aaron and Green Bay are better this year because Aaron's job is. in his heart. He didn't even play that well yesterday, and Green Bay wins. I think Kansas City needs
Starting point is 01:17:51 to take that approach with Patrick, where, yeah, when you need him to be Superman, unlock Superman, let him put on the Cape and go. But he doesn't, he shouldn't have to do it every single week. You should build to win games on teams. You should build to win games on defense. You should win games running the football. It shouldn't be on the quarterback shoulders every single week to be brilliant. You know, it's interesting. At the end of that game with Green Bay, they got a break from the official. They came down and they went for it and ran the football. You would think Aaron Rogers would always want to go
Starting point is 01:18:20 for it. But I was sitting there thinking is it possible that when you were a quarterback that you're thinking, you know, we got a break from the officials, the snow's getting bad. I'll just take the field goal because it looks like Winters officially arrived in Lambo and Carolina's got a good defense. What did you make of those situational calls
Starting point is 01:18:36 with Green Bay going for it at the end of the half? Well, I'll put it in context. I was never as good as Aaron. So you probably think differently than I to. But yeah, there's times that I would, I would assume Aaron and Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes feel this way sometimes that it's just better to take the points. It's just better to do the safe thing. And now I'm a conservative guy by nature. So I always felt that way as the quarterback was what's best for the football team. It doesn't have to be a macho thing.
Starting point is 01:19:08 You know, it doesn't have to be put the ball in my hands all the time. I want the ball in my hands when it matters the most. But there's times when you just do the smart thing. Now, there's also that situation where you kind of smell blood in the water. You think you have your best play. You think you have the opportunity to strike and you take that. So that's why I never get too caught up in those situations when coaches make decisions like that because I see both sides of them, especially now as a high school football coach. I can feel what the fans want.
Starting point is 01:19:33 I can feel what my other coaches want. But sometimes just go with your gut, which what you think is best for your football team in that moment. Elite 11 guy forever played in the NFL Super Bowl, Pro Bowl. let me ask a Tua question, a Joe Burrow question. They're both going to get drafted very high. Burrow is a better athlete than people think, and Tua is a great thrower of the football. If I said to you today, you get one of them.
Starting point is 01:19:55 Which one do you pick? Oh, I don't even think it's a conversation. I think Tua is the single best prospect I have ever studied in my years of doing it. He is so uniquely gifted in so many ways that I think, he is head and shoulders better than Burrow and Herbert. Now saying that, I think both Burrow and Herbert are very, very, very good and will be very good pros. I think this is going to go down as one of the better drafts in a long time for quarterbacks.
Starting point is 01:20:26 But I think as you start talking to your people that are in the know, we're talking quarterback type gurus, talking general managers that have been around a long time. You're talking about people that aren't just trying to create narratives for their own personal gain, which we know happens in draft season. Most people will kind of giggle at that question. Joe Bro is a very good quarterback. Herbert is a very talented
Starting point is 01:20:50 player, both first round picks, really good careers. Tua Taya Voloa has a chance to be a generational type talent in the NFL and go down as one of the better quarterbacks that's ever played in the NFL. So funny to watch LSU be this progressive, aggressive, offensive
Starting point is 01:21:07 passing attack, because my entire life, they've just run downhill. And Ed Orgeron evolved and said, I got to get current and I got to pass and they won a game and they dominated for most of it. Trent Dilfer, congrats. Now, you know, you've got a playoff win. Don't go crazy. I want you to keep watching film. No mailing days, okay?
Starting point is 01:21:28 Grind it away. Trying to win the day and go want to know this week, baby. All right. We've got a next Belichick here. Congratulations, Trent Dilfer. Makes me very, very happy. All right. I'll have more on the LSU Bama game as well, Jeff Schwartz.
Starting point is 01:21:41 First, though, joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Cam Newton's time with the Panthers may be over. Yeah. According to Ian Rappaport, since Cam was placed on the IR last week, he is now considering surgery to repair his foot.
Starting point is 01:21:58 His goal would be to be healthy by March, which is when the future of his NFL career would be decided. Rappaport also names the Bears as a potential landing spot for Cam, which he would be open to Chicago if they were ready to move off of, which would be open to if Chicago was ready to move off of Chibisky. Now, the draft is mid-April, as we know, in 2020. So him being healthy by March would be the ideal time because if the team is going to make a move like that,
Starting point is 01:22:24 you want to do it before the draft. So you know what positions you need to be drafting. Mahomes is going to make $40 million. Actually, Cam at $25 million to $28 is a relative bargain. Well, he's owed $18.6 million in 2020, none of which is guaranteed. I mean, that doesn't exist in this league. No.
Starting point is 01:22:40 So, I mean, if you're talking about, you know, this thing that you're worried about the cost, there's got to be a couple of teams. Now, Tua Burrow and Justin Herbert and Teddy Bridgewater, I would make a trade. If I had a good roster, I would trade for Teddy Bridgewater. I just think he is the current Drew Breeze prototype. Yes, ironically. Yeah, and I think he's a totally focused where I think there are times
Starting point is 01:23:02 Cam's a little, a lot of injuries and a little distracted. but Cam's number is priced. It's a bargain in this league. I think that the Bears are in a unique situation where they almost have to get someone like Teddy Ridgewater or Cam Newton because they're not rebuilding. They have a lot of pieces in the offensive side of the ball and their defense is solid.
Starting point is 01:23:23 So they have a championship level defense right now. So do you really want to bring in another young quarterback that you're going to, even if they come into the league NFL ready, you're still going to have to develop them? you're imagining they're going to be playoff win ready in three years from now. Is your defense going to be the same in three years? No. So they're kind of in a win now mode.
Starting point is 01:23:42 I totally agree. So if I'm the Bears, I'm making a move like this rather than trying to get a draft pick and develop them. We all know that Mitch Trubisky is not the answer there. Even if he is able to win them a division, he's not winning a Super Bowl. And that is your goal, right? Like, that's the purpose of all this. That's why you made the move for Khalil Mack. I actually really like Cam Newton, too.
Starting point is 01:24:03 the Bears if he's healthy. I don't think that Cam Newton is done in the NFL. And sometimes there's just situations where... Oh, he's not done. His time in this place is over. Like, they're going to be loyal to the wins that Kyle Allen has provided them. Even if you don't think Kyle Allen is the guy, at the end of the day, I'm not comparing it to Duff, so just calm down. But like, wins are wins. And that's what they've been getting. And I don't think that what happened yesterday with the Packers is something to overreact to with the Panthers either. Speaking of that, MVP candidates, Aaron Rogers and Christian
Starting point is 01:24:33 Christian McCaffrey faced off yesterday. The Packers got the win 24-16, but it wasn't Rogers who led the way. Running back Aaron Jones was a star with his second three-touchdown game of the season. And Rogers thinks that his teammate deserves to join the MVP top. Well, I know that Christian is a very talented player, and he's been mentioned in the MVP race. So maybe it's time to start talking about Aaron Jones.
Starting point is 01:24:59 It's very good. It's a very nice thing to say. I don't think I would put Aaron Jones in the MVP conversation. No, I don't. Also, Aaron Jones benefits from Aaron Rogers because people are so glommed onto Aaron Rogers. Whereas McCaffrey's getting his with Kyle Allen. Everybody just goes to McCaffrey.
Starting point is 01:25:18 If you have Aaron Rogers as your quarterback, you play a different defense than if you have Kyle Allen as your quarterback. Well, if you look at their numbers this year, if you're comparing Christian McCaffrey and Aaron Jones, Christian McCaffrey has a lot more rushing yards, 989 to Aaron Jones 589. Now, they're pretty similar in every other category, but the rushing yards is what's going to separate you if you are a running back in the MVP conversation.
Starting point is 01:25:41 And really at this point, I think we can all safely say it's between Russell Wilson and Lamar Jackson. Watch Deshaun Watson. If Deshaun plays well down the stretch, watch. You'll be in the conversation. But I think right now with the MVP talk, which I know, like who cares about regular season, you know, awards. But it is something. And I think that for that award, the consistency of your play, you know what I mean? And whether you're in that conversation at the top level for how long is really what matters there.
Starting point is 01:26:10 And that's going to come down to Russell Wilson. I think tonight will be very telling. If Russell Wilson can get the win tonight, it would probably be his, despite the fact that Lamar Jackson's been incredible. Finally, the trade for Minkett Fitzpatrick is paying off for the Steelers, huh? Looks pretty good. Yeah. He had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a pick at the end of the game to seal the 17-12 win over the Rams. He now has six total takeaways in his seven games with his dealers.
Starting point is 01:26:34 Incredible. And Pittsburgh is on a four-game win streak and firmly in the playoff conversation after starting this season one and four. It's pretty incredible what Pittsburgh has been able to do this year and what, to me, look like a completely lost season after mynobh, Adams and Minka Fitzpatrick, to be that dominant when you start in the back end, Jamal Adams yesterday and Mika Fitzpatrick were maybe the best two players not playing quarterback in the league.
Starting point is 01:26:56 They were both absurd yesterday. And that was just a really great win for the Steelers. Huge. Defense had four sacks. Obviously, one fumble recovery return for a touchdown and three interceptions. I mean, I don't know if Mason Rudolph is that guy, but. I don't. I'm with you.
Starting point is 01:27:17 But they're getting wins. He was very good situation yesterday. That's all you can ask for in this circumstance. And they have a big game against the Browns on Thursday. So I'm very excited about the way that Steelers are trending right now. She's, of course, Joyce from Pittsburgh. This joy with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 01:27:37 And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. By the way, I, you know, saying this, Alabama, LSU was a great game. And I'm not saying Nick Saban's going to retire. But I do think when you get to your late 60s, there's, you know, the reason I left the old place and came here, there were three or four or five or six things that started adding up. I think Nick Saban does think about retirement now, and I think he's closer to it than anybody in the media would acknowledge. I think there's seven reasons.
Starting point is 01:28:04 Number one, he's his age. He's 68. When you're 68, all you can think about is the seven. When you're 62, you see yourself, you see the six. Big difference in America how you're viewed at 60 and then at 70. Secondly, he likes power. The transfer portal is driving him nuts. Players can now transfer at any time, and you have no say.
Starting point is 01:28:25 Can't stockpile talent. Number three, and this is a real thing, the recruiting. There's now two recruiting days in college football. Used to be one for 100 years. It's made life as a college football coach nonstop. No quality of life. Can't go to Georgia on your lake house three times a year like you used to. The other thing is Tua is leaving.
Starting point is 01:28:43 Tua is easily the best quarterback Sabin's ever had. He's leaving. And there'll be a drop-off at that position. Number five, there are seven-figure TV jobs lined up for Nick Sabin. He's going to be a TV star. they're all lined up. This network would take them. The other networks would take him. And here's number six.
Starting point is 01:29:02 College football is so offensive-minded now, he can't stop anybody. You can't stop Trevor Lawrence. You can't stop Joe Burrell. You can't stop elite quarterbacks when they're at schools like LSU. He had a buy week and he couldn't stop LSU. He had six weeks. He couldn't stop Trevor Lawrence. He couldn't stop Deshawn Watson. He couldn't stop. The game is changing and it's not giving Sabin.
Starting point is 01:29:23 It's not changing in Nick's direction. it's changing away from Nick. And finally, and this has happened to all the coaches at these programs, it happened to Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Florida. When you become a glamour program like Alabama, you can't keep your best assistance. You get cherry-picked every year. So he's losing assistance. Players are transferring.
Starting point is 01:29:43 He's close to 70. Two is leaving. TV jobs are available. Ugly losses piling up. The game is now moving away from Nick. It's not about being able to sort of strangle an offense. It's just trying to stay. I mean, he can't stop people now.
Starting point is 01:29:58 And I'm not saying he's going to retire, but I think after that game I was like, if Nick said it's been a great run and I'm done and I'm going to make $5 million a year in television, I'd be like, I get it. Urban Meyer did it 10 years earlier. I get it. These TV gigs are way more fun.

Starting point is 01:34:19 And with that, Jeff Schwartz, his brother plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. Jeff played for almost a decade in the NFL, drafted by the Panthers, lives in Carolina, joins us via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Let's start with Kansas City. I said earlier, I think they're too reliant on Patrick Mahomes is that they're built to win MVP's not Super Bowls.
Starting point is 01:34:40 Fair, unfair by me. Well, they're trying to build to win a Super Bowl by trying to improve their defense, right? They got Frank Clark, who really hasn't played by what they thought he'd be, especially rushing the passer. They added Honey Badger in the back end. the defense. They're trying to build up their defense because we know they're so reliant on their
Starting point is 01:34:58 offense. What I found interesting too is the previous two weeks their defense had played the best they had played in a couple years. Even the end of the Broncos game when Pam Homes wasn't playing in the game. It felt like they knew they had to play better because their offense couldn't bail them out. Now Pam Homes comes back and the defense goes back to playing like it has the last couple years. So I think the mentality of the team in general is let's win with our offense and our defense does enough. But I think they're trying to address. that problem. Like I said, they've brought in free agents. They drafted defensive players as well. But their offense is so good. They're always going to be reliant on that offense.
Starting point is 01:35:32 And I didn't think this was the year anyway. I thought the Patriots, I still think, are going to win the Super Bowl. But if they keep adding to the defense, I think they'll get there eventually. By the way, you're an offensive lineman. You like to run block over pass block. But when the Cowboys called running plays late, as an offensive lineman, would you have questioned that? Well, their center did. Travis Frederick looked over there and yelled some choice words over at the play caller after that third and two run before the fourth down. I think I would have thrown the ball. You get more options to throw the ball, right?
Starting point is 01:36:06 That can run. There's four passing options, maybe five. The offensive line had passed protected pretty well all night. And you had to run the ball very well. So keep passing the ball. And to me, it's another failure of Jason Garrett. I don't know how much longer we can keep going and not give him. all the blame. You know, they switch offensive coordinators. They're still having issues with play
Starting point is 01:36:26 calling and being too conservative. And I know he's not calling the plays, but his influence is offense. He's an offensive guy. That'd be like saying, you know, someone who coaches the defense, let's use Belichick, for example. You blame the assistants for calling the plays. No, you blame Belichick for the defense not playing well. And for some reason, a lot of people like to blame everyone but Jason Garrett. It feels like this continues to be his problem. They have a very good team. They have a good offensive line, good quarterback, good running game, stud wide receiver, good tight ends, pass rush, a back end of the secondary. They should be winning the NFC right now, and they're not. That's on Garrett. You live in Carolina. I think it's time to move off Cam,
Starting point is 01:37:06 but I don't think Kyle Allen. I think he's a transitional piece. I look at all these young quarterbacks in the league, and he doesn't feel like he's one of the great ones. Am I wrong on that? No, you're not wrong. I think they'll move off Cam just because his contract is cheap to get rid of, And also, I don't know if Ron Rivera will survive the year. I think Ron's an excellent coach. He'll be picked up the next day. He gets let go. And if he gets let go, Cam Noon is 100% non this roster.
Starting point is 01:37:30 I think you're right about Kyle Allen. Good story. He's played well within their system. But they're going to have to find someone else. And the problem they're going to run into, my opinion, is they're not going to have a high enough draft pick to maybe snag one of these top guys in the draft. They're going to have to find either someone to stop gap for a year or two or just get really bad next season to get a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:37:49 Maybe someone falls to them. We know that the guys slide down the board all the time, but they're going to have to do something at quarterback next year. It's not Kim and probably not Kyle Allen. By the way, Darnold yesterday making plays. Kyler Murray, Lamar. I feel like the offensive lines have regressed in the NFL because college football now is more of a spread offense
Starting point is 01:38:11 and you can only do with what the college game gives you. So it can't be an either-or. I can't just have a pocket guy. Everybody's got to be somewhat elusive. I mean, when you watch yesterday, Kyler Murray, Sam Darnold, those guys, golf is overwhelmed because he's not athletic. What do you make of the movement at quarterback in this league? Well, I think we're getting a lot of these guys from college, right? You can only play how, you know, how you get from college.
Starting point is 01:38:36 You mentioned offensive line, right? Offensive line, I think it's been the same now for about five or seven years. But again, not as good blocking. There's a lot more pass protection now as well. And guys don't develop with lack of practice time. But these are the quarterbacks we're getting. But Kyler Murray, by the way, he's been really kind of low-key good. And he's been from the pocket.
Starting point is 01:38:53 He's been a great pocket passers. Yeah. You mentioned Darnold and all these guys, Watson Mahomes, Dack, all the Carson Wentz. They're very mobile, but they are really good throwing from the pocket stock. I consider them still to be pocket passers who have elite mobility. Aaron Rogers always been one of those guys extending plays. But I think in the end, and maybe Lamar Jackson will prove all of us wrong, being able to complete a third and eight pass from the pocket under pressure is the best.
Starting point is 01:39:18 best way to win a Super Bowl in the long run. I think all those guys we mentioned can do that. Even Kyle Murray. Conler Murray has done a really good job. They've surprised me offensively. I didn't think they'd adapt the NFL this quickly and he has. By the way, Rams are a mess. Why? Who's to blame? I think there's many things to blame. I think the offensive line
Starting point is 01:39:36 hasn't been very good this year. They're getting older and they got younger in bad spots. But look, we have teams that have missed offense alignment this year for injury. The Chiefs are one of them, the Patriots. The Niners have missed two. Their tackles for four games now. And those teams don't miss a beat. So at some point it does fall on the coaching staff.
Starting point is 01:39:52 Felix Sean McVeigh has run the same offense now for three years. There's not much adaptation. There's not much creativity still left in this offense. Look, if so what a running backs out, figure it out. Your offensive line can't block. Get golf easy passes. So it feels like, you know, I know he's a genius, offense and genius, but all these other guys,
Starting point is 01:40:10 Kosh Eanaan is out two tackles and his fullback. And there's no issues with the offense. You've got to find a way to scheme up better plays for golf in this office. offense, and it feels like McVeigh hasn't adapted to, you know, to the shift. The started last year about week 14 with the Lions, about teams are trying to stop them a certain way, and he hasn't changed how he runs his office. Is that golf's problem? Of course it is.
Starting point is 01:40:32 But you got to find a way to get him easy throws and move the offense effectively. 30 seconds. Niners host Seattle. Who do you like tonight? Oh, Niners at home. That pass rush is elite, and I don't care what their schedule says. That pass rush can play against anyone. Give me the Niners at home with that.
Starting point is 01:40:48 defense. All right. Good stuff. Jeff Schwartz, his brother Mitchell, of course. I think his streak just ended yesterday. Most snaps in the NFL consecutively played by an offensive lineman. He's unbelievable. They have a book out called Eat My Schwartz with brother Mitch Schwartz. Good to seeing you, Jeff. Thank you. Starting point is 01:41:23 We're going to go live to Dallas. Jason Garrett, getting some heat today in Big D on the performance of the Cowboys. You know, Trent Dilfer said it's the defensive coaches. All I know is when I watched DAC last night, that's not the issue. I got to tell you, I sat and watched every game yesterday. We have so many good young quarterbacks. and we got three great ones coming out of college. We got backups now.
Starting point is 01:41:51 Teddy Bridgewater is a franchise quarterback. He's a backup. So the game's never been in better hands. We're going to Dallas. Don't go anywhere. Hour three coming up live in L.A. on Veterans Day. It's The Herd.
Starting point is 01:42:02 One more Herd? The Herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Oh, here we go. We are live. in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 01:42:19 This is our three, and this is on Veterans Day, The Hurd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me in 15 minutes from now. We go live to Dallas, Texas. Jason Garrett getting heat this morning. Joy, how are you?
Starting point is 01:42:41 I'm great. Happy Veterans Day. All the veterans out there. Yes, we're also on Channel 83. serious XM. We have our three-word game. We do it every Monday that every single NFL game can be described in three words precisely and exactly and succinctly.
Starting point is 01:43:00 So we will have that. Let's start with what is the obvious topic of the day. The Dallas Cowboys lost, but I thought it was an incredibly beneficial loss in terms as far as losses go. Is that we always know that Dallas is good. They're winning divisions. They're winning games. and the NFC is much better than the AFC.
Starting point is 01:43:19 So let's not deny that Dallas is good. A lot of cowboy haters out there. It's a good football team. They win divisions. But there has been this sense like there's a ceiling, right? We're hitting something. And last night created clarity. The ceiling is the coaching.
Starting point is 01:43:36 The ceiling is not Dak Prescott. I thought Dak was sensational. He was poised. He was calm. He was athletic. He was accurate. I thought it was his best game as a pro. I'm dead serious.
Starting point is 01:43:46 and he lost. Winning and losing is not everything. I thought DAC had no running game, could not throw on play action. Minnesota's excellent. Zimmer's a great defensive coach. He made pinpoint throws. He had 21 of his completions to receivers. Kirk Cousins had six. Kirk Cousins had a lead. Kirk Cousin had a great running game. I thought DAC was spectacular. And here's the thing. The ceiling now we know it. It's clarity. It's not Dak. That's not the issue. Dak to me has elevated. He gets better. He works hard. He works hard. You can see he's doing something that I've always been a critic of Cam Newton. Does Cam walk to the line and never change anything?
Starting point is 01:44:23 Dak last night's walking on the line. He's pointing around. He's barking. I got that guy. He is manipulating the offense and the defense. This is a franchise quarterback. And I think a lot of times when you play excellent and you could be any profession in America, but excellent does something very important.
Starting point is 01:44:41 It exposes average. When Andrew Luck walked in the NFL with that roster and one of the last 11 games, you're like, oh, so that's possible if you get the right quarterback. We can win 11 games and have a bad roster. Great against great doesn't get exposed. But Jason Garrett, and it's not maybe all on Jason, but more and more often, the coaching for the Cowboys is the ceiling. They made no adjustments to the Viking screen game.
Starting point is 01:45:09 It looked like Minnesota walked in, had a game plan, and did whatever they wanted to for three and a half hours. They made Kirk Cousins get a lead, play comfortable. A coach's job, Belichick dominates young quarterbacks. Quarterbacks are too often comfortable against Dallas, and that's with a really good pass rusher, the best young linebacking corps in the league, Byron Jones, you know, they should not be as comfortable.
Starting point is 01:45:34 So I thought last night you lost, but there was real clarity. Our ceiling's not DAC, paid DAC, don't worry about DAC. And last night there was a moment at the end of the game, when the Cowboys ran the football. And I believe if you're a cowboy fan, if you were totally honest with yourself, for the first time in the last four years, Zeke's been in here three years.
Starting point is 01:45:55 First time in three years. You said as a cowboy fan, what are we doing giving it to Zeke? What are you doing, taking the ball out of Dak's hands? That proves something I believed from day one. This is not Zeke's team. This is Dak's team. Dak is the team.
Starting point is 01:46:12 give DAC protection, Tyron Smith left tackle, give him Amari Cooper, you wouldn't need Zeke. You would need a good back, but I don't want to hear that you have to have Zeke to win. So I thought, once again, we have identified the ceiling. It's not Dak. It's the coaching. You may not want to hear that, but it's true. And I think eventually either get a better defensive coordinator, move off Jason Garrett. But I don't think you can win three or four games in a Super Bowl right now.
Starting point is 01:46:42 with the Cowboy staff. And after the game, Dak did what he always does. He's the Tom Brady in his 20s, which is this could have been a mess afterwards with the play calling. He soothed it all out. How about the second and third down calls?
Starting point is 01:46:59 You went two straight runs and you guys had it going to the pool with the passing game. Did you kind of take the ball out of your hands there? I mean, you've got to go back and look at the situation, right? You don't want to leave too much time on the clock for them. So I'm not going to question the play calling.
Starting point is 01:47:12 there were opportunities. We've just got to do better and execute those plays. Simple as that. And every guy in that locker room would say that. That's how franchise quarterback say after losses when play calling is dubious, they just make that little controversy politically goes away. Next game, and that's another reason why DAC is a franchise quarterback. 30% of franchise quarterback is the non-football stuff.
Starting point is 01:47:38 It's the leadership stuff. It's the podium stuff. We had an anthem controversy. in Dallas, DAC made it go away. You could have had a play calling controversy last night. Dak made it go away. That's 30% of NFL quarterback play.
Starting point is 01:47:50 Pay right there. That's why he's a franchise quarterback. Now, let me segue. So I don't think that loss for Dallas was the end of the world. That was a good loss. Let me take a win, which I didn't think was the greatest win, and that was Green Bay's win over Carolina. I didn't like Matt LaFlewer at all.
Starting point is 01:48:06 I thought situationally, Green Bay made mistakes. So the NFL refs gave. Green Bay an absolute gift. Gerald McCoy was called for roughing the passer. It was a terrible call against Carolina. I mean, you get those sometimes. You're at home. You're at Lambo.
Starting point is 01:48:23 You get a call. And it extended the drive. And Green Bay came down with a chance to get a field goal, absolute points as the weather was turning. And I believe as an NFL coach, you have to realize, wow, the game, we have a new game. This is not going to be a wild scoring game.
Starting point is 01:48:40 The weather's getting bad. Carolina's good. We got a gift. Let's get three points. We get the ball after half. We could put 10 points on the game. Boom, guaranteed. They didn't. They went for it, got nothing. And I think it made the game closer than it needed to be. Then at the end of the game, situationally, they had a couple of offsides calls against the defense. I didn't like that either. And hopefully now, Green Bay can learn from that. But I'll give you an example. I saw this with Freddie Kitchens this weekend in Cleveland. Now, of course, we all say that Matt Lafleur is a home run because everyone. Warren Rogers is great and Green Bay is used to winning. But Freddie Kitchens did it this weekend where Freddie Kitchens, twice instead of kicking field goals and getting points, didn't realize that the game was changing. Buffalo is a real team. We're not going to score a ton of points here.
Starting point is 01:49:28 Their defensive lines giving our offensive line trouble. Let's just take the points. Points are going to be very, very big for us. And Freddie Kitchens didn't. Freddie Kitchens wanted to get touchdowns. As much as the game is all offense in the NFL. I mean, we always talk, oh, everybody who scored it. Do you know what the average score in the NFL is?
Starting point is 01:49:45 Like 24 to 21. It's like a point more than it was like a decade ago. As much as you think this league is all about quarterbacks and scoring, you know what's winning in this league? Baltimore runs the football. New England runs the football. New Orleans runs the football. You notice this?
Starting point is 01:50:04 Who's? Oh, San Francisco's running it. And Baltimore is running it. And New Orleans is running it. And New England's running. it and all the good teams are, oh, Green Bay now is running it and Carolina, they're running it. And no, it's not. This game is about dominating the point of attack. Hopefully you have a special quarterback that can bail you out once, twice, three times a game, or about every month you lean on him.
Starting point is 01:50:25 That's what San Francisco did to Kyle Shanahan last week. But I thought Green Bay, we got Aaron Rogers here. Let's roll the dice. I thought situationally, Green Bay got a gift from the NFL, should have taken the points. I thought Cleveland figured it out in the middle of the game, should have figured it out during the game. Green Bay should have figured it out. The weather is getting bad. Take the points. You're not going to get some freebies anymore from the officials. And Carolina is not budging much defensively. I didn't like it. I didn't think it was a great win. I thought situationally, Green Bay yesterday was below average. And I think you can beat a lot of teams in this league at Lambo. But you know what? You're going to lose a couple games down the stretch doing that.
Starting point is 01:51:03 You've got San Francisco right around the corner of Green Bay. You're not beaten San Francisco if you're subpar situationally. So I didn't love that. Okay. We go to Dallas next. I thought it was a good loss. Maybe that doesn't stand. Maybe they don't feel like that in Big D today. That is coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of The Heard weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. So this morning in Dallas, 105.3, the fan, very popular station in Dallas. Mike Fisher, who's an award-winning journalist, 30 years, cover. the Cowboys and the Mavs in Dallas. He's a go-to guy for information. And he had Jason Garrett on the show this morning,
Starting point is 01:51:47 and they were talking about what we've talked about today is that the play calling at the end of the game, DAC was on fire, DAC was controlling the tempo. Dak was just in, he was like an NBA guy that was hot. He was in a zone, and they took the ball out of his hands. And here is Cowboy Coach Jason Garrett on the radio this morning responding to those calls. Kellan's calling the game, and in that situation, it's second and two when he felt like he had a good opportunity against a favorable box to run the ball in those situations.
Starting point is 01:52:18 And on each of those plays, we had options beyond just the run. And, you know, unfortunately, we weren't able to convert. Okay, and let's go via the Coward Global Satellite to Mike Fisher. Okay, when you're doing radio in the morning, you certainly, Mike, you hear the city talk. And in Dallas this morning, DAC was terrific. last night. And the coaching for the Cowboys, you know, I mean, how many Viking screens could they run? They didn't adjust the play calling. Did Garrett Mike get a lot of heat on your show? Well, especially for the offensive play calling. I called it this morning on, and I got a chance to sit in with Sean and RJ on 105.3 the fan. And I called it institutionalized stubbornness. I really believe that there's still flashbacks around here that, hey, let's just do it the way we did it with Emmett Smith. and Larry Allen and Troy Aitman and Eric Williams and Mark Stepnoski. And this isn't that.
Starting point is 01:53:16 This offensive line isn't that. And this circumstance isn't that. In a vacuum, it's a great idea to keep running the ball. Great idea to run Ezekieliot. But this game wasn't played in a vacuum. This game was played, Colin, in a situation in which after the game, I asked owner Jerry Jones about his disappointment over the failure of the running game and maybe over the institutionalized stubbornness.
Starting point is 01:53:38 And he said, it's as if Mike Zimmer, Vikings coach, came to AT&T Stadium and hung up a big sign that said, thou shalt not let Zeke run. So given the fact that that was the Vikings' entire scheme, entire strategy, institutionalized stubbornness is why the cowboys kept running Zeke. You know, there's always been this sense. You know, Jerry is seen as this oil maverick and there's vanity and craziness. And I always say, timeout. They draft excellent football players. They're very smart.
Starting point is 01:54:08 Jerry generally gives a coach an extra year. He kept guys on Campo and guys I would have run out much sooner. I think he likes Jason Garrett. It's almost like he's an extended member of the family. I don't think he's going to make a move on him, but I'm on the outside. Mike, do you believe he would move on him if they did not make the playoffs? Yeah, if this team does not experience premium success this year, Jason Garrett will not be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys next year.
Starting point is 01:54:38 Now, Colin, you and I can debate what premium success is. How many playoff games you have to win? What if you play valiantly in the playoffs and the ball bounces just wrong? But eight and eight will not get the job done here. And it's not because Jason Garrett isn't a good person or, and it's maybe not even that he isn't a good coach. It's that 10 years is a long time, no matter how much affection you have for the man. You know, I've said before is one of the things I love about Dak, he's so good at the podium.
Starting point is 01:55:07 And I believe, Mike, 30% of being a quarterback, you know, you guys could have had an anthem controversy. Dak ended that. You could have had a play calling controversy. Dak ended that. He's a grown-up. He's getting better. I can count on him. He's improving.
Starting point is 01:55:22 He works. And so I'm very comfortable. Dallas says, here's 33 million. You're our guy. I'm hearing stories now about franchising him. And I think to myself, he's not Kirk Cousins. He's clearly better. This morning, Mike, do you think he's going to get the contract?
Starting point is 01:55:41 What about these franchise rumors where that helps the Dallas Cowboys long term and they're going to be, you know, they're just going to watch him for another year? Yeah, you've thrown a bunch of good stuff into a pile. Number one, we have now clarity, something that I already knew, but now we have clarity. It's Kellyn Moore that calls the plays, even though his supervisor is Jason Garrett. Some of the plays are handed to Dak Prescott, and he makes choices. And he doesn't always make the right choice.
Starting point is 01:56:05 He's a relatively young quarterback, and no quarterback always makes the right choice. But this organization is right. Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, Wilma Clay. They are right in believing that, as Jerry told me not too long ago, we are betting our future on Dak Prescott. And Colin, part of it isn't just his qualities as a quarterback. You've nailed it. Part of it is his qualities as a person.
Starting point is 01:56:25 He could have stood up and taken our bait after the game last night. said, yeah, you know, I didn't necessarily like that call or this call. He didn't do it. Not only did he announce that he wasn't going to question play calling, he ordered the locker room to not question play calling. Dach Prescott is a man. There is no plan to franchise him. There is no plan to not pay him. There is no plan to wait. Somebody could pick up the phone call today. And they're going to find a compromise between the cowboy's desire of paying him like a top five quarterback, which is 30 million plus. And what I believe, Dax's desire is, which is 36. million. And if they work out the years, we don't have to wait till next March or next year or next
Starting point is 01:57:04 century. We can do this today. Yeah. Mike Fisher's joining us award-winning journalists completely tied into the Dallas market and we're talking cowboys today. You know, I look at the NFC and I say to myself, I like Green Bay, but you can run the football on them. I don't trust them. I think San Francisco's good, but they struggled with Washington. They struggle with Tampa. They have been, you know, very, vulnerable, their defensive lines just so darn good, it overwhelms people. I think Dallas is fine. I think they're a very good football team. They're not going to have to play all of these NFC teams. It's a little March madness.
Starting point is 01:57:41 Somebody's going to get knocked off. Do you think there is, if they remain healthy, this could be this morning a Super Bowl team? Well, they're going to run into a bunch of teams just like them. At Detroit next week, although Matt Stafford night and I play, obviously, that makes a difference. but the Detroit's and the Minnesotas and the Chicago's and the San Francisco's and New Orleans and Dallas and Green Bay. They're all on a similar plane, I believe. The problem is your argument, as valid as it might be, you already lost in New Orleans. Green Bay.
Starting point is 01:58:14 I've already lost to Minnesota. Now you've got to hit the road. So I think the gauntlet is a very difficult one. I have said, and I think we've all said, boy, if you play like that again, you can't win, except all these other teams play the same way. I think this may come down to Dallas at Philadelphia, as it so often does in this division now. That's a long way off.
Starting point is 01:58:33 But part of the problem maybe around here is there's a belief, and maybe it is due to Jerry being the greatest salesman in the history of the planet. There's a hyperbolic vibe around here all the time, that this is the biggest and this is the best and this is the year, and we don't need to get him. We already got him. And this guy's going to be the next something. and this guy's going to be the net, and it's Jerry's fault, if you will, as a salesman,
Starting point is 01:58:58 because he's the greatest salesman in history of the world. And maybe it's our fault that we keep buying it. That's a good way to put it. You know, if they pay DAC the number, Mike, and maybe I'm asking this too soon, but Kansas City's going to pay Mahomes 40 large. Okay, if you think they're Mahomes beholden now, good luck. If you pay DAC 36, you're going to have to make choices here. Offensive line, Byron Jones, do you worry that if you pay DAC, then this is the best collective talent he'll ever play with now?
Starting point is 01:59:33 Is there a concern in Dallas? You pay DAC, you're losing guys. They have $80 to million in cap room next year, but it's earmarked. It's already, in a way, spent. It's not spent in ink. It's spent in pencil and on calculators. And that includes Amari Cooper, getting a gigantic deal. includes DAC getting a gigantic deal. And if they can make it work with Byron Jones, obviously, they like to keep him. Now, that going rate for cornerbacks was $16 million. That's not going to happen. But my argument, I guess, Colin, I think this is a good debate to have. If they pay DAC, let's just say, instead of 33, it's 36. That's $3 million. What does that really cost you? It costs you a $3 million player. You mean somebody on special teams? So I don't think that the Cowboys have to make great sacrifices or the
Starting point is 02:00:22 quarterback has to make great sacrifices to have a great roster. I went into this year, Colin thinking, and I think a lot of us did, this roster is so good that if the quarterback's good, the team's going to be great. As of last night, the quarterback was great. The team just wasn't very good. Mike, it's an absolute pleasure. I followed you for years. You do excellent work, and I love on late notice you dropping by. I even, folks, I love the background. That is a Texas home right there. That is what a Texas home looks like. I just had this painted this morning.
Starting point is 02:00:56 It's all fake. Mike, thank you so much for joining us in the herd. Thank you, sir. Good stuff. There you go. You know, he makes a good point. Dak was great and the Cowboys weren't last night. Now, let's, you know, the whole show we talk about Dallas. Let's acknowledge Minnesota may have the best roster
Starting point is 02:01:13 in the league. They may have the best roster in the league. You know, people bang on their offensive line. Their offensive lines fine. They're not as good at corner, maybe as people think. And they were missing starters. But Minnesota, I mean, if you told me it was the best rosters in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:01:30 I think Minnesota's number one. I'm trying to think of it. San Francisco number two. I think a lot of that's coaching. Minnesota best roster. New Orleans is way up there. Dallas is top three or four. Yeah, I think that's where I'm at. I like San Francisco and Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 02:01:51 If Big Ben was healthy. I think both those teams have. You know, the Niners who played the night and the Steelers who played yesterday, if you put collectively, they're 25 and under defensive players, you would have one of the best defenses in league history. I think for the Ravens in there, too.
Starting point is 02:02:09 Ravens have a very good roster. I don't think it's as good as Dallas's. I don't think it's as good as New Orleans. I think Minnesota is the best collection. I watched that game last night. My takeaway is, does everybody understand we are watching like 30,
Starting point is 02:02:25 25 B plus A minus or above NFL players? You may have the two best running backs in the world playing last night on Sunday net football. Here's Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 02:02:42 Browns got their first win at home this season with a 1916 victory over the bills. It's like every time I say the Browns, Colin cannot help. You cannot keep a straight face. Okay, I'm going to read a list. Here's what I learned. Can I read a list?
Starting point is 02:02:55 Yes. Here is what I learned about Buffalo yesterday. It told me that Buffalo is a very good story, but not a great team. They're well coached but limited. Josh Allen, still way more project than prospect. It told me they're a playoff team potentially. No chance in a Super Bowl. It told me they're not a heavy.
Starting point is 02:03:18 Here's what it told me about Cleveland. Nick Chubbs good and they're still a mess. What am I supposed to get out of Cleveland yesterday? I'm not taking anything out of Cleveland. They were abysmal in the red zone. Difficult to watch. But at the end of the day, they got the win over the bills who you consider to be a playoff team amongst all those other critiques that you have.
Starting point is 02:03:38 I don't like them anymore. Today you don't like them. I don't like them. That's fine. I don't really love the bills either, but they are a good team and they're a playoff team. Anyway, Baker had zero turnovers in his first game of the year with multiple touch. so that something could take away. And he hopes that this win can get Cleveland jump started
Starting point is 02:03:55 for the rest of the season. We still didn't play perfect by any means. We can still learn from the film and move forward and improve. But having a tight victory against a great team is something that we needed, especially at home, you know, kind of getting the monkey off our back with that one. The first win at home in game nine is not something that usually happens, but it can get us rolling from here. I do like that win for the Browns.
Starting point is 02:04:18 However, they play the Steelers. they play the Steelers on Thursday. So short week for them. Short week for the Steelers also as well. Let's be honest. If Big Ben was healthy, Cleveland would be dead. I mean, Baltimore's exceptional at many things.
Starting point is 02:04:33 Pittsburgh's playing their butt off with a backup. If Big Ben didn't get hurt, Cleveland's Cleveland. They're in third place. Yeah, I mean, if Big Ben didn't get hurt, this whole division would look different because you imagine the Steelers would be playing even better than they are.
Starting point is 02:04:46 Yeah, but I think Baltimore is still better right now. I think Baltimore is pretty special. No, they are. But it's just like we feel like Mason Rudolph is limited. That's why we're not really, even though the Steelers are playing great. We're not following the momentum. I'm not banging on Baker. This is not a Baker issue.
Starting point is 02:05:01 It's just I don't feel like I learned anything from Cleveland. I still don't trust them situationally. And Nick Chubb's great. I already knew that. Bill on Buffalo is just like I'm done. Odel to get his most targets of the season. How many did he get? There's 12, I believe.
Starting point is 02:05:13 All right. There's something to take away there. That's pretty good. So it was a matchup of unbeaten Big Ten opponents on Saturday, fourth-ranked Penn State was allowing the second fewest points in the FBS heading into the game. But number 17 Minnesota dropped 31 on them to pull off the upset win. They ended a 13-game losing streak against ranked opponents and got their first one at home over a top-five team since they beat top-ranked Michigan in 1977. Did you notice, Joy, that PJ Flex the coach of Minnesota.
Starting point is 02:05:41 They signed him to a new contract next week. But let me tell you something. That's a smart athletic director because USC needs a coach. He may have gotten it. That guy is, if you're Minnesota, you better sign him and have a expensive buyout. Because Minnesota doesn't have many NFL players. They played their butts up. Penn State's a real football team, and they jumped all over.
Starting point is 02:06:04 It was a very, very impressive one. It was the first sellout crowd for Minnesota in four years. And, I mean, their quarterback had a great game. It was just, it was a fun game to watch. And it was obviously those two losses yesterday with Bama and Penn State have. huge implications on college football playoffs. Speaking of that, Joe Burrow had the game of his life against Alabama on Saturday, thrown for 393 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Starting point is 02:06:28 Pretty much solidified himself as the Heisman frontrunner and even drew a very bold comparison from CBS analysts Rick New Heisle. That guy, and I said it before, is Tom Brady. He is going to be a remarkable NFL player. He's got great accuracy. He's got a great sense of anticipation. That's the thing you're looking. looking for most when you're making the transition from college to pro.
Starting point is 02:06:52 He does have a great point about his anticipation. I do like his decision making. He was a high school, all-state basketball player in Ohio. He's a great athlete. He's a very good athlete. Which trends was talking about earlier. We're seeing more and more of that. You were talking about. You want to see more of a hybrid quarterback, not just a pocket presence, not just a running quarterback. Got to be able to move. They snapped an eight-game losing streak against Alabama. They had a combined 39 points in the last
Starting point is 02:07:18 five games against Alabama. So this was a huge marquee win. So think about what's happening to college football. So Nick Saban had a buy and gave up 500 yards of these guys. Deshawn Watson twice and Trevor Lawrence six weeks to prepare. He can't stop Clemson. The game now was so offensive that Saban with six weeks can't stop elite offenses. Like college football in the NFL, but especially college football.
Starting point is 02:07:44 It is everybody spread out. And also Alabama just lost joy. They've lost so many good coordinators. At some point, how many Kirby smarts can you lose? How many Lane Kiffins? Don't we love this? Don't we want to see some mix-up at the top of college football? This is amazing.
Starting point is 02:08:00 I love what LSU is doing. It had great games this weekend. Minnesota over Penn State. I mean, I'm not really rooting for anyone here, but like you want to see some competition and some new blood in it. So it was great to see. And it was, I mean, at Ur-Dron, like, how can you not? you gotta like Ed.
Starting point is 02:08:17 How good of a weekend was it? Just think of this. The Golden Gophers and the Vikings won. So the two big games of the weekend, Minnesota, the state of Minnesota won both of them. Good day for Minnesota. And they're probably watching me going, why do you keep talking cowboys?
Starting point is 02:08:28 I don't understand it. What about us? Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. By the way, tonight on Monday night football, get a great game.
Starting point is 02:08:39 Seattle's at San Francisco. It's one of my blazing five picks. I'm two and two through four. I have the Niners to win by a touchdown or more tonight. But I think what you're going to see tonight is the future of the NFC West, where I think it's going to be San Francisco and Seattle, not L.A. I've said this.
Starting point is 02:08:55 Last year I said on the show is everybody was falling in love with Sean McVeigh. I said he's not the best coach in his division. Kyle Shanahan is the best young coach in his division. Pete Carroll's by the best coach. Sean McVeigh is very good, but I think he'd be the third best coach in the division. But some of this is everybody this morning is like, the Rams are terrible. do you really think Sean McVeigh got stupid?
Starting point is 02:09:16 He's really smart. Do you think Jared Goff can't play now? Stop. LeBron came into town and the Rams started paying all their stars. It was almost like they had seats to sell their due stadium. They're PSLs. They paid too much for Brandon Cooks. They paid Todd Gurley too early.
Starting point is 02:09:32 They're going to have to pay Jalen Ramsey a fortune. They probably paid Jared Goff a little early, but I get it. Wrap it up before you have to. But my issue with them is they've paid a lot of stars. Aaron Donald's getting a lot of money. Jalen's going to get a lot of money. lot of money. Gurley's getting a lot of money. Brandon Coak's getting a lot of money. Goff's getting a lot of money. Your offensive line's a mess. And Jared Goff is not athletic
Starting point is 02:09:52 enough to overcome a bad offensive line. The Rams offensive line right now is Andrew Whitworth at 38 years old and then cross your fingers. They can't block. And against teams like Pittsburgh, which have a ton of young hyper athletic kids, plus McAfee, Fitzpatrick, they just looked overwhelmed. And again, my rule in the NFL, outside of quarterback, don't pay anybody. Like, try to get a deal on everybody because in the end, if you got to pay your quarterback 38 million, it's too big of an asset not to protect. I got to build offensive lines.
Starting point is 02:10:28 And that's why with Dallas, they're going to have some decisions to make. But this is not McVeigh can't coach or golf can't play. Don't overreact to this. This is a quarterback who plays a lot like Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan cannot always. overcome an atrocious offensive line. McVeigh's fine, golf is fine. But I do think the future of the NFC West, where San Francisco, by the way, their money's on the lines right now. Garoppolo and line play. In Seattle, their monies with Russell Wilson and their defensive front seven. And that's
Starting point is 02:11:01 why I think the money should be spent in this league, not on the flashy perimeter if you can help it. We call it the NFL three-word game, every game, starting with the Raiders over the chargers on Thursday, explain in just three words. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Go further than ever with a Discover at Miles card. Match the Miles first year. 35,000 could become 70. Discover.com slash travel.
Starting point is 02:11:30 Limitations apply for new card members only. We call it best for last every day on Mondays during the NFL season. We play the NFL three word game. Go back to Thursday night. Raiders, Chargers, can you describe every NFL game in three words? We think you can, and here goes. Chargers, Raiders, Chuckie was right. He had a plan, didn't agree with it, accumulate draft picks, get guys young, cheap, upgrade
Starting point is 02:12:01 the offensive line. That's what they really needed to do to protect Derek Carr, and Derek Carr's having career highs in completion percentage and passer ratings. The draft picks they got for Khalil Maher. One of them, Josh Jacobs, is going to be the rookie of the year, potentially, offensively. He was right. They're five and four tied with the Steelers as an AFC wildcard second team, although the Steelers has, they have the tiebreaker.
Starting point is 02:12:26 Lions Bears, Stafford broken back. Yeah, his streak of 136 straight games, it's over. He is week to week. That news came down yesterday. He took a couple of hits against Oakland, so we wish Matt Stafford the very best with his health. But that explained why yesterday he did not play and his streak was snapped. Ravens Bengals, Lamar Highlight Real. Just the second player ever to have two games with a perfect passerating in one season.
Starting point is 02:12:57 The others, incidentally, Big Ben in his division. It was the longest rushing TD by a quarterback in two years. They've figured out the offense. He's getting better week to week as a thrower. right now, New England, Baltimore feel like to me the best teams in the AFC. If I had to bet today, I think they meet in the AFC championship, probably because they had a weaker schedule. New England would host that game.
Starting point is 02:13:26 Bills Browns selling Bills stock. Listen, they've lost two or three games, still haven't beaten a team with a winning record. I mean, listen, Cleveland was kind of dysfunctional in the red zone, and they, I mean, they had opportunities. that game could have been far worse. Cleveland messed up and Buffalo couldn't take advantage of it. The Bills haven't had a 300-yard passer in 42 games, easily the longest active streak in the NFL.
Starting point is 02:13:52 Josh Allen's a big talented kid. He's really athletic. A little more runner than thrower right now, but maybe they make the playoffs, but they're not special. Saints Falcons. What was that? Falcon's six-game losing streak ended.
Starting point is 02:14:07 The Saints' six-game winning streak ended. Drew Breed got six. six times. The reason most of us will never be able to bet the NFL is that game. You get about one or two of those a weekend, and you can't explain it. It was the, listen to this, it was the worst home loss without a turnover for the Saints since 1967. And they've had some bad teams. So that was just a crazy game. They couldn't stop Atlanta and they couldn't move the ball. Giants Jets, wildly entertaining mess. Jets had a season high 34 points.
Starting point is 02:14:43 Sam Darnold was out of this world good running for his life with their below average offensive line. Darnold did really good things. By the way, Daniel Jones had four touchdown passes. He looked great. Jets' secondaries atrocious. Their safeties are good. Their corners are bad. I watched that flying back from Utah, and it was incredibly entertaining for two teams going nowhere.
Starting point is 02:15:05 Cardinals Box. Another impressive loss. Listen, Kiner Marie's streak. of 211 passes without a pick ended. But it's the longest streak for a rookie quarterback in NFL history. His last three games, he's been terrific with a bad offensive line. He's completing 62% of his throws. Five touchdowns a pick and 99 pass-for rating.
Starting point is 02:15:28 He got jobbed at the end of the game on a bad call. Arizona, to me, if I wake up this morning and I live in Phoenix, I'm like, I'm good. This is a tough out. This team's good. They're fun. I mean, this division's brutal, but Arizona's good. And Kyler Murray, you got your right guy. Chiefs Titans.
Starting point is 02:15:47 Mahomes great, but he threw for 450 yards, second most of his career. But they've lost in his two highest passing yard games. And, you know, he leads the NFL in everything. His NFL passing yards per game, yards per attempt, yards per completion, lowest interception percentage in the NFL. Yeah, great. Maybe you want to beat Tennessee. They don't run the ball. Can't stop the run.
Starting point is 02:16:08 explosive and fun. They feel like the Aaron Rogers Packers for about a seven-year stretch. They're just wholly too dependent on Patrick Mahomes. Dolphins Colts. Winning on porpoise.
Starting point is 02:16:22 Whatever. It's our line. We're going to own it. Okay, this is going to be stupid. But do you know in the month of November, they've been more impressive than New England? They're averaging more points, better third down percentage,
Starting point is 02:16:32 better point differential, and two wins to none. And I'll say this, that team plays hard. a lead in their last four games and the fewest penalty yards in the NFL, very New England, very well coached, but they're tanking and they'll get more players. I really like Brian Flores. Listen, when you have that talent, you got the fewest, you're getting leads and you never get
Starting point is 02:16:55 penalized? That's called coaching. Packers, Panthers, goal line, stand. That's what the game came down to. Green Bay jumped off sides twice. That was awful. And then I thought they should have run. I mean, it came down to this play, which was, it just kind of felt like when the play was over,
Starting point is 02:17:14 they weren't going to give it to them. Although I think you could make an argument if that game was in Carolina and you weren't all freezing, you could have given it to them. I didn't like situationally, Green Bay yesterday at the end of the first half. I didn't like him at the end of the game. But, you know, they won in their division, Minnesota won, so they keep pace. Rams Steelers, genius card expired. Rams already have more losses than last year.
Starting point is 02:17:38 they can't block. According to PFF, their past blocking O-Lines 30th, their run-blocking's 28th. Listen, you can blame Jared Gough. I mean, go ahead. You can blame Jared Gough for everything. Goff is not Deshawn Watson. He's not Sam Darnold.
Starting point is 02:17:51 He's not a guy that's going to run around like Kyler-Marie and make plays. So, you know, we've seen him be very good when he has a running game. But this organization, McVeigh, yesterday, it just goes to show you, and Trent Dilfer said this earlier, and Jeff Schwartz said this earlier.
Starting point is 02:18:05 Kyle Shanahan is beating you a million. in different ways. It feels like the Rams have a formula, and if the formula's not working, like they're just not a good team. And they've got to figure out ways to give Jared Gough more time because they've got some really good skill people. Vikings Cowboys. Pay, Dak, now. Listen, he was great last night against their really good Minnesota team. Dak didn't have any running game. He didn't have a lot of time to throw sometimes. I mean, he's just mixed it up. 21 completions were to wide receivers. Conversely, Kirk Cousins, six of his catches were by wide receivers.
Starting point is 02:18:43 I think Dak's accurate. You know, he's not a naturally beautiful thrower. It takes a lot of work. It's funny how in games when I watch him, he usually takes him about 12 to 15 throws, and then he kind of gets into a rhythm like a basketball player. But boy, at the end of that game, Dak was really accurate and really good. And, you know, I just, like, we've got to get.
Starting point is 02:19:05 get over this thing. Dak may have been drafted in the fourth round. Brady was drafted in the six. Russell Wilson in the third. This is not Zeke's team. Stop it. It's Dak's team. This is Dak Prescott's team.
Starting point is 02:19:16 I do think they're better when Tyron Smith left tackle is healthy too. Let's make sure we acknowledge that. Seahawks Niners tonight. NFC West Crown. Both teams are to own division. San Francisco's top six and everything. Russell Wilson, who is my MVP this morning, 22 touchdowns, one pick.
Starting point is 02:19:37 118 passer rating. League best in all categories. And they've had to kind of carry him. I mean, it's not a great offensive line like Dak has, or Lamar Jackson's got a better offensive line. It's not a great offensive line. His wide receiving weapons are not as good as a lot of other young quarterbacks in this league, like Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson,
Starting point is 02:19:58 and San Francisco is really, really good. They're at home. They're getting both their tackles. back. Are they getting their full back back tonight as well? That's pretty crucial in their offense. I'm not sure if they are. Are they tonight? You got money on that game, Whitlock?
Starting point is 02:20:13 You should. It's the bed of the week. I love San Francisco tonight. Tomorrow, Peter King and the herd hierarchy. It was just a, hold on. Okay. There we go. No. I'm not getting it's not sourcing. It's just a family member.
Starting point is 02:20:31 Nothing's on fire. We're all good. If you're not bleeding to death, there's no fire. Don't call me during the show. It was a great weekend of college football as well. The LSU-Bama game, we both watched that, was incredible. Incredible. I said, I don't think Nick Saban's going to retire. I don't.
Starting point is 02:20:48 But I do think anytime I've made a move in my career, it's been because three or four or five things all sort of line up. Nick Sabin's now 68, his best quarterback ever, Tua is leaving between the transfer portal and the early signing date. I think it's wearing him out. He has less control. It's not as fun a job as it used to be. The game of college football does not reward defensive specialists like Nick Saban.
Starting point is 02:21:13 It is an offensive game. Even his defenses off a buy can't stop anybody. He's lost good coordinators. There's TV gigs lining up. I'm not saying Nick's retiring. But Nick Sabin told his agent Jimmy Sexton, and I've said this before, that, you know, I want to leave two years early. I don't want to be Bobby Bowden and leave two years late.
Starting point is 02:21:33 I want to leave early on top, still competitive. And I'm watching LSU just off a by, go up and down the field, Clemson, up and down the field. And the last two consequential games for Alabama, they can't stop anybody. And that's not Nick's fault. He's lost Kirby Smart. Still recruiting good players, but the game is changing. The game is not lining up for what Nick does well, which is coach defense, transfer portal, early signing, TV gigs to a leaving.
Starting point is 02:22:01 And I just wonder if Nick wakes up and C-68. Now, no TV network comparing what he's making at Alabama. And boy, when you're making $10 million a year, it's hard to say, you know, I'm going to take a pay cutton. But he looks a little tired. I think he's gotten a little snippier. I don't think Alabama is a playoff team this year. I think they're out. I think Ohio State's going to make it.
Starting point is 02:22:22 Clemson's going to make it. Nobody's beating Clemson in the awful ACC. LSU probably going to make it. And I think Alabama's on the outside Oregon, Oklahoma get in. just the way it is. Speak for yourself as around the corner for joining everybody else. Fun Monday show. Happy Veterans Day.
