Starting point is 00:01:41 this is clivert taylor the fourth and on my podcast the clivert show i'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff like being an internet famous referee we're in the middle of a game this linebacker this linebacker walks up to me he goes a ref my mom wants you to wave at her what Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Miss Parker.

Starting point is 00:02:35 Fox Sports Radio. Here we are on a lively Tuesday in L.A. This is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me. We had 8.5 million podcasts listens, by the way, in the last month. So thank you to everybody. Wow. Thank you, everyone.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Close to a new record for us. It was a great January. It was a great NFL season. I got five, six changes I want in the league. I'll talk about that next hour. Peter King next hour. Joy Taylor is joining me. So football, you think it's over.
Starting point is 00:03:19 But remember, we're four or five weeks out from free agency. And now some guys won't get paid, Joy. A lot of guys want to get paid. A lot of money. Let's start with that. Dak Prescott has been a good quarterback. 12th, 13th best in the league about where I have it. But he's been a great league.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Peter. He's been a great cowboy. Jerry Jones has defended him and he loves him and he's his guy. And in September, they were talking about paying him a lot of money. Remember that Stephen Jones is like, this is our guy. I'm going to pay him a lot of money. And suddenly, they don't want to pay him. Prescott told the Dallas Morning News, David Moore reporter, quote, be sure to report, I won't be working out anywhere near the star. As the article says here, by Dax's Quire Boy standards, that was somewhere between a fist in the air and a middle finger to cowboy management. His contracts expired. Mike McCarthy wants him in OTAs, and he's not around the facility. Now, I get Dack.
Starting point is 00:04:22 I get Dack wanting to get paid. They haven't paid him anything. He wins division titles. His numbers are good. Aesthetically, sometimes, he doesn't look quite the part. But why suddenly wouldn't they want to pay them. I'll tell you what it is. This is my opinion. That Philadelphia game, it hurt Dak. Dak had the better O line, way better ride receiving core, way better running back,
Starting point is 00:04:52 and he could not score a touchdown against a middle of the pack Philadelphia Eagle defense. Carson Wentz had nothing, lawn furniture, and deck chairs. I mean, Greg Ward was his best receiver, former college quarterback. And Carson Wentz completed 77% of his throws, 320 yards passing, a passer rating of 1018, and was dealing with nothing. That game hurt DAC. Listen, you can talk about deserve.
Starting point is 00:05:21 It's about earn. Last game under your contract, you go on the road, and Jerry and Stephen Jones are saying, we gave you not only a better offensive line, the best offensive line in the NFL, probably the second best receiving group outside of Kansas City, arguably the best running back, middle of the pack defense,
Starting point is 00:05:40 we couldn't score a touchdown against Philadelphia. And Carson Wentz carried that team for a month with major injuries. And there are these individual moments in life, sports or not, where people are going to judge you. And I think that game, I mean, you folks are banging on Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy Garoppolo took a team to the Super Bowl and led Patrick Mahomes 20 to 10 in the 4th, and you all think he's overpaid,
Starting point is 00:06:06 and he's making 27 million. And Jerry's supposed to pay DAC 36. That's reportedly what DAC wants. So let me just tell you about the way at quarterbacks, it works for me. There are very few blank check guys in the NFL for me at quarterback. There's two. Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson,
Starting point is 00:06:23 here's the check, fill in the number you want. Blank check. I like your brains. I like your leadership. I like your arm. I like your playmaking. I like your coachability. And you elevate everybody around you.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson. Blank check. Now, I like Carson Wentz a lot, but because of his injuries, he's not a blank check guy. What about Lamar Jackson? He's never won a playoff game. I'm not sure he can play from behind consistently. What about Deshawn Watson? I like him.
Starting point is 00:06:51 He's not Russell Wilson. He's not Patrick Mahomes. Aaron Rogers. I don't know. Last couple of years. Am I wrong here? He looks a little old. Aaron's not Aaron. His numbers came down this year with a new coach that was supposed to be so great and progressive.
Starting point is 00:07:06 So the reality is after Mahomes and Russell Wilson, I'm negotiating hard on everybody. I'm not giving you a player-friendly deal. I also know if you look at the recent three drafts, 10 out of the last 12 first-round quarterbacks, even the one with big flaws, have worked. Outside of Josh Rosen, injuries, they've all worked to some degree. Sam Narnold's working. Baker's working to some degree. We don't know on Dwayne Haskins and Josh Rosen hasn't worked. So this is one of these things where I think the Philadelphia game really hurt Dack.
Starting point is 00:07:42 I mean, if my company didn't know whether it would pay me a lot and they think they like me, and all of a sudden I don't have a great last year of my last show is a disaster. I mean, it's going to make people pull back a little bit. So according to reports, it's a franchise deal. Dak's not happy, and I get Dak not being happy. I get it. I'm not banging on Dak for being upset.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Not at all. He's won a lot of games and a division. But I also get Dallas being concerned. Do you know this? Once you get paid a lot of money, you can't win Super Bowls. I'll give you an example. The Peyton Manning
Starting point is 00:08:25 as a cap hit was ninth. The last eight Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, their league-wide cap hit rank. Mahomes is 343rd in the league. You can't. Peyton Manning's the only top 10. That was in 2015 when that defense carried him in Denver.
Starting point is 00:08:46 That's it. Once you're a top 10 cap hit, and if you're making $36 million a year you are, you don't win Super Bowls. And we know Jerry's goal, he said it many times at this point, it's not about money. I got to win Super Bowls. You put a guy out.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Now, right now, Patrick Mahomes is still low on that ranking. Kansas City could pay him now, but they're probably thinking why. We don't want the big cap hit yet. So this is tense. I get Dak's bitterness. But outside of Mahomes and Russell Wilson, I'm negotiating hard with everybody. All right, let's segue to this. The New York Post.
Starting point is 00:09:23 It is a fine newspaper owned by my boss. think they do terrific work. Excellent paper, Mr. Murdoch. But they had a story this morning. I'm going to push back on a little. May I do that? Headline, New York Post. Jimmy Garopolo, Kyle Shanahan being exposed,
Starting point is 00:09:43 raises major 49er concerns. Excuse me? New York Postperson. I'm going to give you two teams with major concerns. Let's start with the Giants and the Jets. rosters, coaches, general managers. I would go Giants Jets. Why don't you stick to those local teams?
Starting point is 00:10:05 Because the Niners don't have any problems. First of all, it's overreaction Tuesday. Second of all, what always hurts Super Bowl winning, losing teams. Here's what ends dynasties and here's what hurts really, really, really good teams. Age. Rams got really old on the offensive. line, their center retired. You lose top coordinators. Those two things. Niners have kept both coordinators. Neither land a head job and the Niners are really young. And then you look at, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:42 schedule and who do you play. I'll get to that in a second. There were 12 teams that made the playoffs last year. Twelve teams, Ravens, Chiefs, Patriots, Texans, Bills, Titans, Niners, Packers, Saints, Eagles, Seahawks, Vikings. I can look at several of those teams and see that. And say, I just don't know. I think they'll pull back. I think Baltimore will be good next year. I don't think they're going to be like 14 and 2 and 13 and 3 good. I think they caught the league off guard a little. I think they'll pull back. Texans, they are my fall through the floor team in the NFL next year. You can't keep asking Deshawn Watson to save the franchise. Bills, I think they pull back. I think the Jets and the dolphins are both better. Titans, you really
Starting point is 00:11:25 think that magical run happens again? They don't know who their quarterback is. Packers, they'll be good. I don't think they win 13. Saints, who's the quarterback? Vikings? What happens if they start out two and two? Kirk Cousins loses a big primetime game? I'd make
Starting point is 00:11:41 the argument. In his last year, they could lose the locker room. Kurt Cousin's about to lose that locker room, losing any more big TV games against really good teams. San Francisco is not pulling back. I'm not guarantee a Super Bowl. Age, no problem. Coordinators didn't lose them.
Starting point is 00:11:59 They're probably not going to re-sign Jimmy Ward because they can't afford him. He's good, gets hurt a little bit. I doubt he gets re-signed. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but I wouldn't be surprised if they move off him. The other thing is, look at San Francisco's schedule. I've got it here.
Starting point is 00:12:14 They play the AFC East and the NFC East. They get the Bills, Miami, Philly, and Washington at home. I'll take my chances. They have to go on the road to the Giants and the Jets. I'll take my chances. Yes, winning at Dallas can be tough occasionally, and winning at New England's never easy. But San Francisco is the daunting team on everybody's schedule, not vice versa. New York Post, good paper, writer, I'm sure a good guy.
Starting point is 00:12:39 There are no concerns with the San Francisco 49ers. They may not win as many games as last year, and they may not make the Super Bowl no big pullback here at all. Coming up next, timing is everything. and Tom Brady's timing is really, really bad. Plus Doug Gottlieb next hour, this hour, excuse me, Peter King next hour. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Last night, a blown call changed the game.

Starting point is 00:15:12 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What?

Good to have you and Peter King next hour. Joy Taylor joining me as always. So timing, you know, timing in life is, you know, it's kind of everything,
Starting point is 00:17:02 right? Like, and the other thing is, you know, guys are different. You know, guys are driven often, not always, but primarily by their professional career. I can't speak for what drives women, but for men, you know, high achievement matters, makes you feel better, blah, blah, blah. So Brady's got $500 million in the bank. He's got all the trophies. But there's this thing guys say all the time, respect. You've got to show me respect. And Brady wants more money.
Starting point is 00:17:30 The timing here is not good. Let me explain it. So this is very un-Bradie-like. He's taking pay cuts his entire life because, you know, it worked. So Tom now wants the most money off his worst season and when the Patriots actually need to finally spend money on wide receivers. The timing's not great, but Tommy's taking a lot of pay cuts. I talked to two Patriot employees in the last week.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Money matters, but the other issue for Tom, and it's the bigger issue is they're slow. New England offensively is slow. Nikiel Harry, I've been told, by a former Patriot player, they like him. He's got a good catching radius. He can't separate. Muhammad Sunu, they like him. He can't separate. Edelman, slot receiver.
Starting point is 00:18:21 They don't have people who can separate. So money matters for Tom. And according to Tom Curran, the best reporter, in my opinion, that covers the Patriots in Boston, he said this morning, he's been told, in excess of $30 million for Brady. Okay, so the timing's weird on this. Now, think about this. So the start of the NFL year is actually contractually March 18th. That's the start of the year.
Starting point is 00:18:48 That's when the official season starts in the NFL for the bookkeepers, March 18th. If the Patriots pay Tommy before then, it's less of a cap hit. So New England wants to pay Tom in the next six weeks. Okay. Then the cap hit is not nearly as much. And that's what Belichick does, right? We don't want a big cap hit. The problem is then Tom Brady has to trust that Belichick can draft a good receiver.
Starting point is 00:19:15 I don't know. they can't do that ever. And B, or he'll spend a bunch of money in free agency for a wide receiver. He doesn't do that either because he's been paying Edelman $5 million a year, and Edelman's wildly productive. Why is he going to go spend $15 million on a wide receiver? So Brady, if he wants the money, he's going to have to get it before, you know, March 19th, and that's going to help the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And according to Tom Curran, they're going to pay him. But then it just becomes trust. Do you trust Belichick to draft a good speedy receipts? I don't. It's not what he does well. They've got another issue. Timing's everything. Joe Thuny's their best offensive lineman. He's a guard. He's a free agent. Belichick, this line hasn't had a pro bowler in seven years. The offensive line's not very good. They also need a quarterback, a succession plan. So the Patriots have seven draft picks. They go to address quarterback after Brady, offensive line, get a speed receiver,
Starting point is 00:20:11 and Bill doesn't like to pay money for skill people. If Tom wants his money, He'll probably get his money, but the timing's not good here. There's a lot of dates. Tom's just going to have to trust people, and the Patriots, according to Tom Curran, they're going to give him over $30, $30, $32 million. The only way they're going to pay him that is if they can get him that March 18th or before. That's it. And then for Tom, trust Bella check the draft receiver?
Starting point is 00:20:40 Because they're going to take a quarterback with one of those seven picks, and they're going to take an offensive lineman with one of those seven picks. Here's Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I like the story. I think you'll like it too.
Starting point is 00:20:55 With over seven minutes left in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs were down 10. Yeah. And they were facing a third and 15 on their own 35. Yeah. Patrick Mahomes found Tyree kill for a huge 44-yard gain. We're showing it now, and that sparked Kansas City's comeback. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:10 Well, quarterback's coach Mike Kafka told Peter King, it was actually Mahomes idea to run that play. Mahomes actually. for it and then Andy Reid called it and the chiefs ended up scoring a touchdown four plays later they cut the deficit to three and we know how the rest of that game ended the play was called two three jet chip wasp and Andy Reid said it was called wasp to literally put the stinger on them I think that's fun I love that Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have that kind of relationship yeah where I mean it's third and 15 you're gonna imagine that Andy Reid with the experience and the
Starting point is 00:21:46 the knowledge that he has, that he's going to be the ones to make that call. But he trusted Patrick Mahomes in that spot, and it worked out. Yeah, Patrick's got really good instincts. He really does. And he can also make that throw. But what he said was he wanted to give Tyreek the opportunity to make a play because he knew where the safety would be
Starting point is 00:22:04 and it would be a one-on-one matchup with Tyree Kill, trusted Tyree Kill. And that, to me, is what a Super Bowl team is. It's a lot of trust in the biggest situations and moments. And, you know, Patrick Mahomes didn't play the best. best game. But to me, that's why he's a superstar. What he was able to do in the biggest moments to spark that comeback and get it done, that's what championships are made up right there. Roger Goodell is a commissioner and would never root right for anybody to win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:22:32 But when you wake up this morning, NFL season's over, right? I wake up this morning and I think the best player and the best team is the most, well, I don't know, most loved coach. He kind of is like the most beloved. Right smack dab and small market Kansas City in the middle of the country. Did you see how many commercials during the Super Bowl were about farmers and about our fallen heroes in the military, middle of the country? Like I wake up this morning and I'm like, all is good in the NFL. You got this handsome, fun, amazing, likable, coachable talent. The Kansas City Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:23:08 It's not a flashy coastal team. It's not a new team that just ended up in L.A. It's like, oh, the Kansas City Chiefs now run the league. It's like, sometimes leagues get lucky. Joy, like, like it. No, that was, that was, look, I obviously 49ers fans don't want to hear anything. Right, right, right. But it's just, this is, this is kind of the truth.
Starting point is 00:23:25 It's good. And that parade tomorrow is going to be. Lord. Wild. So 76ers suffered a blowout. 137-106 lost to my heat last night. Watch that. After the game, Ben Simmons called out his team for their lack of hustle.
Starting point is 00:23:40 He said we were soft. Soft isn't, is just don't get bullied, fight over screens, get through screens. If you've got to knock somebody down, knock them over. If you've got to hit somebody in the face, knock them down and make sure they don't score. Hit them in the face. Well, that's not really the heat style. Well, Philadelphia's been a terrible road team. Yes, they are nine and 18. For a good team in the east? That's a terrible. That's not good. Yeah. Some of that's just immaturity. Well, look, I mean, they're struggling. Like, that's, you don't, you can't have a record like that and expect to go very far in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:24:15 They're like 22 and 2 at home. So Miami is great at home as well. They're 22 and 3 at home. So there is some of that like, you know, the Sixers aren't playing well on the road. Miami is playing amazing at home. But also Miami's team this year is just they're very physical and they're rough. So that's probably what Ben Simmons is talking about. When you play a team like the Miami Heat, you're not going to finesse them.
Starting point is 00:24:37 I was just talking to a scout the other day. And he said, I asked him about Miami. He goes, listen, man, spolster's teams play defense. Pat Riley's teams. Like if you watch the heat, and this is not just like Milwaukee commits the defense. The Clippers play defense. Miami plays defense. Sixers on the road don't play a lot of defense.
Starting point is 00:24:56 Well, they also have two all-stars in Jimmy Butler and Bamadabio. And they have a bunch of guys that can get buckets as well. Duncan Robinson, I mean, Goran Joggich had 24 points last night. So they're playing well. Andrea Godala has insisted he will not play for the Grizzlies this season if he is not traded by Thursday's deadline. Trade deadline snuck up on us, huh? I was going to say, I thought it, they moved it up. Well, they moved it before the All-Star game, so that there weren't rumors during the All-Star weekend.
Starting point is 00:25:22 That's actually a really smart league mood. It is, because then you don't even know if some of these guys are going to be teams there with. And also, the NFL season ends, and you go right into trade rumors for three days for the NBA, so you get a bunch of publicity. Right, and then All-Stars next weekend. Yeah. So he's not going to, he said he's not going to play before the Thursday's deadline, and his teammate, Dylan Brooks, made his thoughts on Igodala's request very clear. First time I seen him was on TV talking about us. But we, you know, it doesn't even matter.
Starting point is 00:25:52 You know, Andreou God is a great player. I feel like he's doing the right thing for, you know, his career. But we don't really care. It's certainly not a distraction. No, it's not a distraction at all. I laugh at that type of stuff, you know. A guy that's on our team doesn't want to be on our team. You know, I can't wait until we find a way to trade him so we can play them.
Starting point is 00:26:11 We can't be to show them what really Memphis is about. He hasn't played all year. So John Morant seems to be in agreement with this. He posted an emoji, the yelling emoji in response to a tweet about Brooks's comments. So the heat have emerged as a suitor for I godala, which I like. And I would be interested to see what they're willing to give us for aigodala. That's interesting. So Miami would get another guy a situational guy hit a three-play defense.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Right. And the Clippers and Rockets were pursuing him last summer. The Lakers have also been mentioned as a landing spot. Rob Polinka is Igodollah. as former agents. Miami's a shock of the year, the story of the year in the NBA. We kind of laugh when Butler went to Miami. We're like, what the hell are you doing? I mean, I thought
Starting point is 00:26:51 it would be a good fit because it was going to be his team. He was great last night. That's what he wanted. And now the whole identity of the Miami Heat is just kind of what Jimmy Butler is, which is rough and tough and
Starting point is 00:27:07 hustle and energy. And they put together a great team this year. Good stuff. Joy, with the news. Well, that's the News. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Line news. Perfect Valentine's gift. Tommy John, limited edition underwear and loungeware.
Starting point is 00:27:20 10% off. Shop limited edition Valentine's Day gift sets. Tommyjohn.com code her. Let's bring in Doug Gottlie, the Dougger Fox Sports Radio after my show. And so, you know, it's what we were talking about. Listen, baseball doesn't have a salary cap. Everybody else does. So, you know, you and I both know, you pay your stars.
Starting point is 00:27:38 There are two quarterbacks in the league. They're blank check guys. I'm going to give Mahomes, you know, here's the check, filled out. I've always felt that way with Russell Wilson. Leadership, toughness, doesn't get hurt, good and big games, great on the road. I don't have a third. Now, I think there's a bunch of guys that get close to, but Aaron Rogers did not last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:27:56 Looks a little old. Deshawn Watson, I like him, don't love him. Lamar's never won a playoff game. Don't like playing for him. Hold on. Can we take a breath on the Aaron Rogers doesn't look great? How did Patrick Mahomes look the first three quarters of football? Pretty average.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Average? He kept his team in the game, though. No, he didn't. No, he didn't. Jimmy Garoppolo kept his team in the game. He had, what, two fumbles and two interceptions? That did happen, right? And what happened with Aaron?
Starting point is 00:28:25 How did Aaron Rogers look in the first half? Against the exact, like, let's... Couldn't score. Well, they're playing against that defense. Nick Boso was the best player in the football field Sunday, right? He was great play. So if we both agree, Patrick Mahomes is a great player. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:38 We both agree? Yeah. And that's a great offense. And he looked completely disheveled, not like himself at all through three quarters. And Aaron Rogers, we both agree whether you think he's still a great player right now. He's an all-time great player, right? Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:28:51 The correlation is the Niners defense is legit. They made both of those guys look like subpar quarterbacks. So, but your point. There's not many blank check guys and DAC. What do you, I mean? Look, it's negotiation. All of this stuff is negotiation. Dack is going to get a contract, but the only play the Cowboys have is the leverage of
Starting point is 00:29:12 all right, we'll franchise tag you. You know? Right. And if we can't come to a deal, you'll play on the franchise tag, and guess what? We can franchise tag you again. Right. And if you don't like that, we can transition tag you. Three years.
Starting point is 00:29:23 That's what happened. They'll get a deal done, but I agree with you. It's the idea of, are you going to pay him above Carson Wentz money? And, I mean, look, Jimmy Garoppolo was paid top dollar. He's not worth top dollar. Right. Jared Goff was paid top dollar. He's not worth top dollar.
Starting point is 00:29:41 You've got to be very cautious. And the Dallas Cowboys can sit there and go like, hey, we got a great offense line. We have great skill position players. And this guy couldn't beat any of the good teams. You know, Jug, I was saying there are moments that Philadelphia game when Carson Wentz throws for 320 yards to deck chairs. And then that was a moment. Yes. And Jerry flies home, three hour, 15 minute flight, Philly to Dallas.
Starting point is 00:30:01 And he's thinking, my guy had the better O line, the better running back, the better receiving court. We couldn't score a touchdown against an average defense. Like, I think that moment, it kind of crystallizes your fears. Right. And the only leverage that Dak Prescott has against the franchise tag is, well, I'm not showing up. And look, eventually this will get worked out. But I do think it's really interesting, you know, when people say, like, well, we want Jared Gough money. Well, the Jared Goughbvrex contract's a bad contract.
Starting point is 00:30:24 I think the Garoppolo contract's interesting. I think, like, Skip's point is really interesting when they can buy him out $4 million for him to walk away. And that's only a couple years in listening. You would let him walk away? I would consider it. If I can get Tom Brady, Tom Brady makes that throw on third down. Oh, Lordy. You would give up Garoppolo for Brady.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Look, we can go back and point out that Kyle Shanahan, when they're down three, chooses to not run the football after on first down, they run for 17 yards. But if you watch the totality of the fourth quarter, Jimmy Garapolo was not good enough to win that game. You cannot lose a game as a quarterback, okay, and miss the throw. He didn't miss by this much. The third down throw where he's a touchdown pass, he missed by a country mile. Nobody does that. The top quarterbacks make that throw. On third down, third and five on the previous drive,
Starting point is 00:31:15 he's got arguably the best tight end in football open. He doesn't even see him because he's so flustered, but by the Blitz, he was, he's not playing against the Niners defense. He's playing against the Chief's defense. But the Chief's defense was much better week 12 on. It was a real defense. No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:31:31 And I thought Steve Spinelladol did a very good job. I thought, you know, Chris Jones is two and a half deflections. Those changed the game. One of them was huge. Big. But we would all point out, I mean, there's also a second downplay. They have the ball with nine and a half minutes to go, have the ball up 10, and lose the game. And they don't score in their last four drives.
Starting point is 00:31:55 And by the way, good luck repairing that relationship. Because no matter what Kyle Shanahan says in the press and the offseason, they got the ball back, should have been a minute 30 to go in the first half. John Lynch, who I think we all believe, like, it's not me or you or Joy or Tui's calling timeout. I saw that. It's John Lynch, who played in the NFL, should be a Hall of Famer, will be a Hall of Famer, is the top GM in the league. And he's sitting there going, all right, time out, easy call, right? They don't call a timeout.
Starting point is 00:32:24 They get the ball back under a minute to go. Do you know the last time we saw that? We saw that in Jacksonville two years ago in the AFC championship game. That's Blake Bordal stuff. Remember, the Jaguars are up against the New England Patriots. and they get the ball 58 seconds to go in the first half, full boat of timeouts, and they take a knee. That's telling the world, I don't think Jimmy G's got it. I just, I don't believe in him.
Starting point is 00:32:48 I am on an island because I like it. I don't think he's. I like him, but I would not. Dude, you can fool me, we can fool you, we can fool fans. You cannot fool players. And the players have to be sitting there going like, are you kidding me? Emmanuel Sanders is open. That's a historically great play call.
Starting point is 00:33:10 Perfect situation, perfect setup. He's open. You didn't come close. Yeah, but Jimmy G. won in New Orleans late. He was really... He won one game. Well, he's seven and two in primetime games.
Starting point is 00:33:22 He's played well in primetime games. Look, I was a buyer into Jimmy G. But you see him on the... It's called competitive greatness. That's what Patrick Mahomes has. Can you play great when greatness is called upon? Patrick Mahomes, played a crummy game. He did. He was not good. He's not the MVP. Damian Williams is the
Starting point is 00:33:38 MVP. But whatever. He makes the throw to Tyreek Hill. It's a little behind him, but he's under duress because here comes Bosa. He makes the throw on the money to Sammy Watkins. He makes the right throws at the right moments. And if you look at him in the sidelines, he's showing great leadership and he kept that team together. Competitive greatness. And look, it's a small sample size, but Jimmy G. not only doesn't feel like he has it based upon his performance. There's a second downplay where, you know, Kansas he's got 10 guys in the box. You check out of it and you throw the football.
Starting point is 00:34:07 He didn't because he was out of sorts. He was so nervous about the moment. He didn't have the competitive greatness that Patrick Mahomes had, that Tom Brady has, that Aaron Rogers have, the top level, you either have or you don't have. And at 28 years old, on the biggest stage in American sports, he didn't have it. Let me ask you about Brady, because we just brought this up.
Starting point is 00:34:26 March 18th is the new NFL year for the accountants, right? So if New England, they'll pay Tom before March 18th, because it lessens the cap hit significantly. But that means Tom will have to trust Belichick to draft a speed receiver. He doesn't or spend money on him. He won't because he's gotten so much out of Edelman at $5 million. So here's the thing. Do you take the money if you're Tom?
Starting point is 00:34:50 Is the money that big of a deal that you have to literally trust they get a guy? I was told by two Patriot, I'll just say two Patriot employees. Money matters. This is about money with him. It's not about, look. He wants speed. You can, of course he does. You can question Belchek's drafting, okay,
Starting point is 00:35:11 because Nikiel Harry does not appear to have it as of yet. He was hurt. And he can't separate. And he can't separate. But they did have Josh Gordon. They did have Antonio Brown, right? He had good enough players, just both of those guys imploded, and they had to get rid of both of them.
Starting point is 00:35:27 Okay? I would guess that that's still a play. Greg Olson and the Carolina Panthers just parted companies. Can you tell me there's a smarter, better, potentially Hall of Fame wide, tight end that's out there? You draft a tight end and you have him as a tight end. And boom, now you got your two tight ends back. Yes, you can acquire a wide receiver. They made a bad decision midseason.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Emmanuel Sanders was traded for less than what they got Muhammad Sanu for. They made a bad call, right? But they still won 12 games. They're still in the AFC East. and he's not, I just, I don't believe he's going to work in a place that he's never been before for a coordinator who's never called place with him for. That just doesn't make sense. You don't do one thing for 20 years one way and then go, hey, at the end of my career,
Starting point is 00:36:12 I'm going to do it completely different. It's hard. I think this is about money and nothing else, money and respect and years of guarantee. By the way, I watched the Miami Heat destroy Philadelphia last night, and we only got about a minute and a half, two minutes left here, Doug. I don't, I have never thought Simmons and Embedieed were. work together. I think they're both immature. They both want to be the man. I think Simmons is best when the lane is clear. Philadelphia, though, if you give up Embed, who defends Janus? That's why
Starting point is 00:36:37 the Celtics want Capella. Somebody's got to be, you have to have a forceful defender. And so I look at Philadelphia and I say to myself, this doesn't work. It's good, but it doesn't work. You run Philadelphia tomorrow. M. Bid Simmons. You can get a haul for M. Bid. I just, I don't know if there's a right answer. What would you do? Look, Embed has historically great talent. No question. Like people don't, it's like the Shaq conversation. With Shaq skilled, like, no, but there's never been a man that big who's that fluid and athlete.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Totally agree. This guy has the skill and is big and is fluid. The problem is, I don't know the medicals. I don't know. There's got to be a reason he can't be consistent. Last night, you chalk it up to the South Beach flu. Sure. Right?
Starting point is 00:37:23 They play in Orlando on Saturday. They play on Monday. They get blown out. I mean, what are you? I was in my, I'm still recovering from Miami. I went out one night. So I, everybody but Joy is recovering from Miami. She's used to it.
Starting point is 00:37:34 She's in her town. She's like, give me some more of that Miami stuff. That recharges me. I chalked that up to South Beach Flu. But look, Embed is the historically great talent. I'm still concerned about the medicals and the up and down. Simmons, I like that he said we didn't have toughness. I like that, but he can't shoot.
Starting point is 00:37:54 And it's become a shooter's league. I probably hang on to Simmons. because he's been hurt less, unless I saw some medical reason that tells me that Mb is fine, is sound. It's a really hard problem. They went for it over the last two years, and this is the problem when you go for it,
Starting point is 00:38:09 and these guys are both going to want to get paid, and it's going to be harder to put the ancillary pieces around them. Doug Gottlie, the Dugger Fox Sports Radio after our show. Good seeing you, buddy. Mock draft came out, and one of the mock drafts that we pay attention to, and it made a big mistake, and I'm going to make my one prediction on mock drafts.
Starting point is 00:38:25 I'm going to have one major prediction that's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's

Starting point is 00:39:31 And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:39:55 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app, Search learn the hard way and listen now. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:40:28 And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff, like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Quarterback on office, Blue, 42. A rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. If you're watching the latest season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta,
Starting point is 00:41:09 you already know there's a lot to break down. Georgia accusing Kelly of sleeping with a merry man. They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew. Pinky has financial issues. I like the bougie style of Housewives show. I think it looks like it's going to be interesting. On the podcast, Reality with the King, I, Carlos King, recap the biggest moments from your favorite reality shows,
Starting point is 00:41:31 including the Real House Wise franchise, the drama, the alliances, and the team everybody's talking about. As an executive producer in reality television, I'm not just watching it. I understand the game. As somebody who creates shows, I'll even say this. At the end of the day, when people are at home, they want entertainment. To hear this and more, listen to Reality with the King on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:42:00 Great to have you in. It is a Tuesday. Peter King stops by next hour. And so does Mitchell Schwartz, who, by the way, the Kansas City offensive linemen, was rated the number one player in the NFL playoffs by Pro Football Focus. Throughout the whole playoff for Kansas City, he gave up two, two, hurries, not sacks, twice. In fact, Nick Bosa usually bounces side to side. Nick Bosa stayed on the opposite side of Mitchell Schwartz, who was not only the best offensive lineman of all the teams in the playoffs, he was the best player, according to pro football focus, in the entire NFL playoffs. He'll be joining us next hour. So it's mock draft time. It was so funny, I woke up this morning. I love mock drafts. And I literally felt it. I felt, you know, I always feel pressure during
Starting point is 00:42:50 Super Bowl week. Got to have good shows for Fox. And then Monday, post-Super Bowl, it's a big show. And I woke up this morning and I'm like, football season's over, except for the XFL, but the NFL season's over in college until Labor Day. And so it's like six months now of I got other stuff. I get a little bit of the pressure. But then I'm thinking to myself, I love this feeling because we move into stuff I care about.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I love the draft. I love free agency. As Joy said yesterday, nobody loves the draft like I do. Outside of maybe, you know, Mel Kuyper, I love the NFL draft. So a mock draft came out today, Todd McShay. My takeaway is he's got quarterbacks way too low, 11 of the first 20 picks or offense or defensive linemen. I think he's got quarterbacks way low.
Starting point is 00:43:33 He doesn't have Jordan Love anywhere in the first round. He's got Herbert going, you know, middle of the first round. There's something happening in the NFL. And this is one of the things I love about sports. I've written books about this. I love emerging trends. I love new stuff. And we have a trend going on in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:43:49 Well, it is, over the last four to five years, it is real clear. In fact, let's take the last three years. Of the 12 first round quarterbacks taken, outside of Dwayne Haskins, we don't know. And Josh Rosen, it's not working, injuries. Ten of the 12 can play. The bust rate has plummeted. It used to be a 50-50 proposition. There were years when they were all busts.
Starting point is 00:44:12 They're not busting. Why? Three things. We have more progressive coaching bringing in more college concepts. So the young quarterbacks now feel very comfortable. They take their college concepts. The NFL's put their arms around that. Number one.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Number two is the NFL's rules are so pro quarterback and so pro wide receiver. It's now about sideline to sideline, spread it out. We've never had more good receivers because the best athletes now either go to the NBA or they play quarterback and wide receiver. So you've got really good coaching, putting their arms around the college concepts, bringing it to the NFL, you have more good receivers than ever, and more rules designed to help the quarterback. And number three is all these quarterbacks now, all of them come from a generation where they got 10,000 hours. It's the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hour rule by the time they were 12.
Starting point is 00:45:06 These kids were, now Russell's a little old. Aaron Rogers, they didn't grow up in that generation. They just missed it. They're still great, Hall of Famers. But all these kids now played on seven-on-seven camps when they were nine, ten, ten. 11, 12. They are just better now at 17. I mean, I was talking to Drew Bledsoe not long ago on the show, and he's like, I basically had 28 high school football games. That was it. Kids now come out with 45 high school games, you know, a ton of camps. They're just more evolved, and they understand
Starting point is 00:45:40 the game better. So we have a real trend going on. So what does it mean, Colin? It means is draft a quarterback in the first round. The failure rate has plummeted. So I'm going to give you my prediction. This is by one prediction in the NFL draft. I don't do mock draft because who knows. Burrell is going to go number one, not because I have any insight. That's what everybody's saying.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Two is going to go number five to Miami. I think they'd be nuts. I don't care about his medical. I think you're nuts. I think he's Drew Breeze. He's that accurate. Number six, I think the Chargers, this mock draft has him taking a lineman. Forget it.
Starting point is 00:46:16 They're going to take Justin Herbert at Oregon. because he's the most talented guy. And I'll make this prediction. Jordan Love goes number seven. Either to Carolina, or if Carolina makes the decision over the next month or two that we're going to go with Cam, then somebody's going to move up to that seventh spot and take Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:46:35 It could be the Colts. It may be New England. They need a quarterback that's more mobile. But this kid out of Utah State, 6-4, 225, lively arm, and he's mobile. And are there issues? Yes. But his issues are coachable. Look at the video right here. He is a big, strong, lively arm, mobile athlete out of Utah State looks the part.
Starting point is 00:47:01 The knock on him is his lower body mechanics are a mess. He hasn't been brilliantly coached. He needs good coaching. He's Josh Allen at Wyoming. Big, lively, athletic arm. He needs coaching. By the way, in most instances, NFL coaching is much better than college coaching. Now, Lincoln, Riley is better some NFL than some NFL offensive guys.
Starting point is 00:47:27 Nick Sabin's better than a lot of NFL defensive guys. Dabo Sweeney, there are some really good college coaches. Irman Beyer offensively is smarter than a lot of NFL guys. But by and large, your college coach at a small school, Wyoming, Utah State, is not an NFL coach. Jordan Love, Carolina, Matt Rule. The bailer a guy, college concepts to pro concepts, if they bail on Cam, and I don't know if they will. They may just say, I'm going to go Cam two years. But my takeaway is if they were going to go with Cam, they'd announce it already.
Starting point is 00:47:58 Matt Ruhl would have said, I like Cam. If they move off Cam, they're taking Jordan Love. That's my only mock prediction, that these quarterbacks now, every time I see a mock draft, it's like Herbert's falling and two is falling. No, no, no. This mock draft doesn't have Jordan Love anywhere in the first round. I'm telling you right now, I got him going seven. I think he's the kid that's going to pop in the draft.
Starting point is 00:48:19 The more you see, the more they'll like. And there's a real Josh Allen thing here. I don't think he has quite the arm of Josh Allen. But the knocks on him are correctable. He did not have great coaching. His lower body mechanics are lousy. You can coach your way out of that. And he's a kid that'll go to the combine and you're going to look at his arm and his speed.
Starting point is 00:48:40 And you're going to go, okay. He's going to be the pop guy. That is my one big mock draft. prediction. And by the way, by all you guys out there that do mock drafts, we're all a bunch of nerds, know that if you release a mock draft, I will read it. Maybe not on the air, but I'm totally into it. I love McShay, but he's got 20 linemen going. There's too much of a need for quarterbacks right now. You got to do Carolina needs a quarterback. Chargers need a quarterback. Miami needs a quarterback. Cincinnati needs a quarterback. By the way, New England's got to draft one.
Starting point is 00:49:13 Minnesota's got to start drafting one. We got a lot of teams. Indianapolis. needs one. From what I read, the Raiders want one. Hour two coming up, Peter King, it's the herd. Want more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeard radio app. Search Hurd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.

Also this hour, the number one ready player, not only in the Super Bowl, but in the entire playoff from pro football focus, Mitchell Schwartz, tackle with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:53:06 It is great to have you here. Joy Taylor is joining me. As we'll start seguing now, we're going to have more football. You've got a Brady story. You've got Dak wants to get paid. You've got free agency. You've got the draft. There's a lot of football.
Starting point is 00:53:17 A lot of people think post football, it gets boring. I don't. I think the NFL smartly moved free agency up. years ago. You also have some NBA stories now that I think are going to get interesting tonight. Zion faces Janus. So I watched the NBA last night. Joy, how are you? I'm doing great. I'm very excited to talk some NBA, too. I have a feeling I'm going to talk a lot of Miami Heat this year. Yeah, they're pretty good, playing some defense. I want to start with this. So, you know, there's been a lot of talk on the interweb, which I mostly stay off of. I've been
Starting point is 00:53:48 in business 25 years. I get TV and I get radio. Those are the things I know. I don't know much else, really. Parenting, who knows? Skiing, I'm pretty good. But I don't know a ton. But I know my business. And I think I know more than a lot of NBA owners who throw up red herrings why the NBA ratings are down. Part of the reason the NBA ratings are down like 20% is because the NFL ratings and the NFL stories this year were fantastic. This was an incredible NFL season. If I look at my ratings every day, the better the story, the better the rating. The days in which there's a fascinating story, my ratings go up.
Starting point is 00:54:25 It's not that you don't like me, but if the stories aren't as good, I lose 30% of my audience. We all do in this business. So October, November, December, January, the NFL and NBA play simultaneously. The reason the NBA ratings are down at the level they're down, the stories were just too damn good in the NFL. Even bad teams were interesting. The Browns were a mess, but the Baker-Mayfield implosion was fascinating. The Raiders weren't very good, but they got.
Starting point is 00:54:53 hot. Gardner Minshu, the talented hot mess Dallas Cowboys, there were bad teams that were fascinating. The good teams were really fascinating. Lamar Jackson. Oh my God. Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reed, the rejuvenated 49ers. Aaron Rogers has a new coach. Carson Wentz carrying the franchise on his back down the stretch. It was just, and then we got to the playoffs, there was the Tennessee story. Oh, my God, Baltimore lost. Oh, nobody can. Kansas City's down 24. They win. There was so many great stories. And a lot of the big brands, the Saints and the Packers, and Philadelphia and Dallas and, you know, a lot of big brands, big name coaches, quarterbacks won. It was just a great story year, capped off by an amazing Super Bowl where over 102 million people watch.
Starting point is 00:55:51 we are all in this business beholden to the stories. I have had falls and springs. There's no controversy. There's no big story. A couple years ago, in the fall, multiple quarterbacks got hurt. Aaron Rogers got hurt. Carson Wentz got hurt. And it wasn't a great ratings fall for me on radio because I am reliant like everybody else on stories.
Starting point is 00:56:14 Even leagues are reliant. Now, you have the NBA. Well, the NBA has been overwhelmed. Let's be honest about their October, November, December, January stories. The Warriors. Oh, wait, they all got hurt. All right. Kevin Durant's going to Brooklyn.
Starting point is 00:56:27 He got hurt. Okay, I can't wait to watch Zion. He got hurt. Kauai Leonard. Load management. Not a lot of great stories. I like Janus. He's not fascinating.
Starting point is 00:56:39 Boston Celtics are good. Not fascinating. The bottom line here, Zion's now healthy. Maybe people gravitate to that. we are all dependent on stories. And when I read all these reasons why the NBA is down, I think it'll be a great postseason for the NBA.
Starting point is 00:56:58 I think we have a couple interesting trades here. But I just think it was an amazing NFL season. Sometimes your business goes down a little, and it's not your fault. I said yesterday, the Niners lost. Why? Because Mahomes happened. There's somebody doesn't have to be terrible for somebody else to be great. Sometimes great happens, and that's what.
Starting point is 00:57:19 happen with Kansas City. Now, as good as this NFL season was, I would like to suggest five changes to the NFL because I think one of the things the NFL has done in my lifetime better than any league. Baseball takes forever to move off things. You don't even have to love the NFL. They are the best tweaking league ever. They'll tweak mid-season. They'll tweak Super Bowl. Here's five changes I would make to the NFL. Number one, I'd eliminate the Pro Bowl. First of all, it's the only All-Star game at the end of a season. Star players don't want to plan it. Players who make the Super Bowl, many of your best players skip the game.
Starting point is 00:58:00 It used to be in Hawaii. Now it's in Orlando, which is fine, but it's not Hawaii. And it's also confusing. Are you a pro bowler, or did you make all pro? Players care about making all pro, but fans tend to think pro bowl is better, but it's a popularity contest and kind of a joke because so many stars decline it. you want to have 17 games. So you want another game?
Starting point is 00:58:22 If you're going to do another game, get rid of the Pro Bowl. Star players don't want to plan it. I like the Skills Challenge in Orlando. I'd get rid of the Pro Bowl. Number two. Officiate the regular season like you officiate the postseason. The playoffs were great because they didn't call that many penalties. I mean, there were like no holding calls in the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:58:41 Regular season NFL games average 14 penalties a game. They'll call hold. holding away from a play. There'll be a left tackle holding on a right sweep, and they'll replay it. We've got more replays. Did you notice in the playoffs, especially the Super Bowl, the officials got out of the way? Like, I would eliminate any holding call that's not directly attributed to the play. If somebody's holding on the other side of the field, move off it, keep the game rolling.
Starting point is 00:59:10 Let's start officiating the regular season, like the postseason. Let the players win the games. Number three, and I've written about this in both my books. Change the overtime rule. Road team always gets the ball. Why? Because if you tell the home team, uh-uh, there's no coin flip. It's not a 50-50 proposition.
Starting point is 00:59:32 You're not getting it. Watch home teams forced to be hyper-aggressive knowing they can lose at home. NFL teams like to go perfect at home. If you tell the home team, you better take that ball. with a minute 30 and go for the score. Because too many times in these games, teams kneel knowing I can go to overtime. Road team gets the ball.
Starting point is 00:59:55 As I've always said in the NFL, you can't audible on the road as well. You have to do the traveling. The rules are set up for home teams, not road teams. If you can't beat somebody after 13 possessions at home, then in overtime, the road team gets it first. Forcing teams in regulation at the end, the home team to play hyperaggressively.
Starting point is 01:00:16 Number four, let's make the onside kick what it used to be. It's ridiculous. You've changed the onside kick. Now less than 10% of the time it gets recovered. I thought the NFL tweaks things like PAT to give me more excitement. Nobody can recover the onside kick anymore. It used to be 21.4%, which is a good, healthy percent. One out of five, you can get it.
Starting point is 01:00:41 You get lucky. Now it's one out of ten. It's useless. It's boring. It was really, it's infrequently used. But let's be honest. End of games, if there was one in five chance to get it, it was pretty fascinating. Now it's a snooze.
Starting point is 01:00:55 And finally, number five, folks, we don't move the Grammys. We don't move the Oscars. We don't move Marty Grau. Put the Super Bowl in Vegas, Miami, and L.A., and that's it. I went to the one in New York. It's too cold. Minnesota, too cold. Jacksonville too small.
Starting point is 01:01:11 Who are we kidding here? Miami's 80 degrees. It's a big event town. L.A. is a big event town. And Vegas is a big event town. New Orleans, you got Mardi Gras. It's not like New Orleans. You need another party weekend.
Starting point is 01:01:24 You party and you have fun in New Orleans. Why do we feel this, we got to put it in cold weather cities. You really want a Super Bowl in a blizzard? There's a reason they put bowl games in warm weather. You want to reward fans. You want to reward teams with high quality weather that won't get in the way of the game. Miami, L.A. Vegas are the three best events. town's in America.
Starting point is 01:01:47 Just, we don't move most events. New Year's Eve is always in New York and Vegas. Marty Grawn, New Orleans, Grammy's Oscars out here. Why do we have to move? We don't move a lot of stuff. All right, I got a bonus. One more. You have one, Joy, a sixth one.
Starting point is 01:02:06 Okay. From this point forward, and I say this sincerely, with no favoritism or agenda, Fox gets all Super Bowls. Yeah, I agree. We are way better at doing it than anybody else. That was the best five-hour broadcast I've ever seen. It's nothing against CBS NBC, ABC.
Starting point is 01:02:26 You guys are awesome. You can keep doing your college basketball regular season stuff. We're going to take the Super Bowls. We get them. I mean, it's just... We're better at us. We're better at us. We do them better than everybody.
Starting point is 01:02:39 And it's like, you know, it's okay. You got to give it up. It just wouldn't have been the same. it wasn't on Fox. I make better sandwiches than my wife. She is now understands that. And so I make the sandwiches. Sometimes you have to know what you can't do very well.
Starting point is 01:02:53 So we get all of them for this one. You get no pushback for me. And when we have them, and only is the broadcast great, the games are pretty good. Patriots, Atlanta. That one yesterday, pretty good. Peter King's around the corner.
Starting point is 01:03:04 Don't go anywhere. Some NFL thoughts, the Brady stuff. According to stories now, Tom Curran, they're going to pay them over 30 million, but New England wants to pay them sooner than later to reduce the cap hit, and that means Brady has to cross his fingers and hope they'll spend some money which they've never done on a free agent-wide receiver. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports

The Daytona 500 kicks off the 2020 NASCAR season, February 16th on Fox. Joey Lugano is a favorite to win. You know that?
Starting point is 01:07:11 You know that? We got a racing guy over here. Goulet, you're NASCAR. guy. I did know that. Yeah, Joey Lugano's a favorite. Remember when he was like nine years old, racing a few years ago? What is he now? 12? Is he shave? He still looks so young. Well, the Super Bowl is over.
Starting point is 01:07:27 Football Morning in America, NBC Sports. Peter King is now joining us via the Coward Global Satellite Network. There's a lot of things to discuss. First of all, you sat with Andy Reed right after the game. I picked San Francisco to win. It's the happiest I've ever been to be wrong because I think Andy, who we text from time to time, one of my favorite humans of all time. And what was he like after the game when you sat down with him?
Starting point is 01:07:50 Colin, the best way I can describe my whatever 15 minutes with Andy Reid is that, and I say this, not to say what a wonderful guy I am, but it was like he didn't want the time to end. I think the outside world after that was going to be a slew of, Andy here, look over here, Andy, take a picture here, Andy, party this, party, you know, and all that. and Andy has waited for this moment for 21 years. So I think that he didn't want it to end.
Starting point is 01:08:24 He wanted it to be about football all night instead of kind of going into celebration mode. And believe me, he'll have a great time celebrating. But I think at this moment, at that moment, he just wanted to keep reliving, you know, the greatest game of his life. Kyle Shanahan got some heat. I thought it was a little conservative end of the first half. You know, the play calling late, you know, it's tough. When you're facing Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback right now for the next 10 years, potentially, I think it's really tough to beat on coaches for play calling because you have to be somewhat aggressive
Starting point is 01:08:59 because no lead is safe. So you're going to pass more than run. I don't think that's a fair criticism. I did think he was a tad conservative end of the first half, but he was buried deep in his territory. Do you buy any of the criticisms on Kyle Shanahan. Yes, but I only buy one of them. The majority of the criticism, my opinion is your players have to make plays. And late in this game, Jimmy Garoppolo did not make plays. In his last two series, when it was incumbent on Garapolo to move this team down the field, I mean, and again,
Starting point is 01:09:34 I'm not saying that Kyle Shanahan coached this game with training wheels on Garapolo, because I really don't think he did, except at the end of the first half. So I find no fault with Shanahan for his play calling late. I find some fault with him in the last 90 seconds of the first half. Every possession against an Andy Reid coached and Patrick Mahomes quarterbacked team is important. You can't just say, okay, we're going to go into halftime, you know, satisfied where we are because we know we're getting the ball at the second half, you know, of course you're happy to be getting the ball at the second half, but you can't surrender a scoring drive potentially with 90 seconds left on the clock and having your timeouts. That's where I, that's the only place I thought that Kyle Shanahan
Starting point is 01:10:24 made a mistake in this game. You know, I've said this and I'm an NBA fan. You're a baseball guy, I know. I love the NBA. It's my second favorite sport. And it can be at times a little coastal. the cool kids all want to play in certain cities. I really do think it's valuable that the face of the league now is smack dab in the middle of America. Kansas City, Andy Reid is as relatable. He looks like he bowls every Tuesday night. He's America. When you sat down with Andy talking about Patrick Mahomes, is he even a little surprised?
Starting point is 01:10:57 This kid is this good this soon? I said to him flat out, I said, Andy, didn't you have a feeling? He threw the ball right into Fred Warner's. As Mahomes told me after the game, I hit him right between the numbers. And then he throws another interception. And I said, don't you have the feeling? You know, you get into early in the fourth quarter. You're down by 10.
Starting point is 01:11:25 It's just not happening. You've only put 10 points up on the Robert Salad defense. And don't you have the feeling both in terms of Patrick and your offense, you know, sometimes it's not your day. And he goes, absolutely not. I know that if we got a couple of possessions left, I really think we're going to score touchdowns on both of them. And if you look and see what happened at that point, basically inside a nine minutes, you think they're going to have two possessions. And their next two possessions, they scored touchdowns. And they got a third possession because the 49ers turned it over and then they got a third touchdown. So I think Andy was very
Starting point is 01:12:02 repression on that. And I think to some degree, I think that the 49ers basically kind of ran out of ammo on defense after Andy Reed, Eric B. Enemy, Mahomes basically kind of, you know, they're trying this, trying that. And finally they realized here's a few things that we know will work. And it started, you know, with two, three jet wasp that I wrote about in my college. And I was. that is going to be to this generation, you know, what Hank Stram's play calling was in Super Bowl 4. And I think that they finally, the damn broke on that San Francisco defense. And Andy Reid understood that he could do that as long as he had long enough time.
Starting point is 01:12:50 Doug Gottlie was on earlier, and he made a point, he said, it's not, when you don't go for it at the end of the half, Kyle Shanahan is telling you he doesn't trust his quarterback. And I was listening to radio yesterday. I agree with that. No, I mean, we've seen it with the Bears in Trubisky. You can watch play calling, whereas Philadelphia, everybody's hurt. They just let Carson Wentz do everything. That tells you the trust factor.
Starting point is 01:13:12 Do you believe in San Francisco, the Bay Area this morning? There are those, because Shanahan's rock solid. We know that. But Lynch, Shanahan, there are people that wonder, is Garoppolo the right guy? Well, I think that's hard to say right now because Jimmy Garoppolo just finished his first. year starting as a quarterback in the NFL. True. You know, he, he, he, he is not played anywhere near a full season.
Starting point is 01:13:42 In his life, the most he's played is a quarter of a season. And so I don't think they're thinking that right now. I think they believe this is the year that he just mastered this offense. Yeah. And now we've got to get him, now we've got to get him in position to be able to think well on the fly. what would worry me the most about Jimmy Garapolo in this game is his first turnover in this game when he threw the ball
Starting point is 01:14:11 almost like an old far of interception. Hey man, I'm getting pressured, so I'm just going to throw it up. That is what they have to worry about. You cannot make throws, especially in a game of a magnitude like that, where you're literally just throwing it out on a wing and a prayer. Finally, Lamar Jackson won the MVP. I don't have a problem with it.
Starting point is 01:14:32 It was unanimous, and I noticed you writing and talking about the same thing I noticed, love Lamar, but a guy got ignored again. He was my MVP, Russell Wilson. You had an interesting thought about that. Here's the thing, Colin. Russell Wilson, since he was a third round draft choice in 2012, the Seattle Seahawks have played 143 games. Russell Wilson has started every one of those games. He's made the playoffs. They have made the playoffs in seven of his eight seasons.
Starting point is 01:15:09 He is the second leading quarterback of all time in quarterback rating. He's got an incredible rating. He's got incredible, he's got a better one loss percentage than Aaron Rogers or Drew Breeze. And this guy has played eight years, and he is an absolute life preserver every Sunday for the Seattle Seahogs. Yep. And in eight years, 50 votes per year, he's never got an MVP. VP vote. I just think it's incredibly weird and absurd, quite honestly. But they don't, you know, Colin, they don't do the vote like in baseball, where they vote one through 10,
Starting point is 01:15:45 all the writers do. You vote in football and you've got to vote for one guy. Now, occasionally over the years, I've split my vote, but okay, so maybe you vote for two guys. Hey, I voted for Lamar Jackson. He deserved it. But, man, that's a weird thing with Russell Wilson, and eight years playing as well as he has, and not one time out of 400 chances, has gotten one MVP vote. NBC sports, great stuff. Peter King.
Starting point is 01:16:10 We'll talk soon. Peter, thanks. Thank you, Colin. By the way, let me bring this up and something Peter and I touched on. You know, people forget about this. When you face great, let's say, for instance,
Starting point is 01:16:23 you fought Ali or you fought Tyson. You fight differently. Like with Mike Tyson, you fight differently than somebody that didn't have that left hook. A lot of the criticism for Kyle Shanahan in the play calling, you should have run the ball. You should have run the ball. If you're facing Kurt Cousins, you run the ball.
Starting point is 01:16:40 When you're facing Patrick Mahomes, a three-point lead will not do. And so we tend to forget this. Well, Kyle Shanahan's play calling, he should have just ran the ball. And what? Run the ball, eat the clock, and then give Mahomes the ball with those weapons
Starting point is 01:16:58 and Andy Reed with 208. left. You feel great about that, right? Field goal ties, touchdown wins. No, Shanahan was calling more. I went to Twitter last night, look back at my Super Bowl tweets. One of my tweets was, leading 2017, the chiefs have just scored. One of my tweets was, if I'm Kyle Shanahan, I'm being hyper-aggressive here. This lead is not good enough but five minutes left. So you're forgetting, you're like, well, why didn't he run the ball? He didn't run the ball because of a kid named Patrick Mahon. Holmes. He forces you to get uncomfortable. It's comfortable to run it and eat the clock. It's not. Remember when Bill Belichick, we don't, I didn't give my staff the heads up on this.
Starting point is 01:17:40 Years ago, Bill Belichick went for it deep in his, like the 25-yard line in Indianapolis, $4,000. At the 25-yard line? And the reasoning was, well, hell, it's Peyton Manning. Like, we can't stop him. We can't stop Peyton Man. I want my guy to control the game. I don't want Peyton Manning to get it. In his prime, we can't stop him. Do you think Bill Belichick goes for it there if he's not facing Peyton Manning? Of course not.
Starting point is 01:18:11 When you fought Ali, you fought different. When you play Federer, you play different. When you face Mahomes, it does change your play calling. So, you know, Kyle Shanahan, well, he should have run the ball. What? 2017 lead, run the ball. That's good enough against Danny Reed and Patrick Mahomes. By the way, they just scored on your defense.
Starting point is 01:18:28 So your defense is on the field for several minutes. They scored on it. You want to go punt Mahomes. Really again? You feel great about that. So I don't, now the criticism of Jimmy G. Late is fair. I like Jimmy G.
Starting point is 01:18:42 Seven and two in primetime games. Outplayed Mahomes for three quarters. He got a little tight. They asked him to make a couple of big throws and he missed an open Emmanuel standards. That is absolutely fair criticism. I like him way more than everybody else apparently this morning. but the Shanahan stuff, you didn't want him running the ball and just eating clock? Can't do that against the – not only is Mahomes, the best quarterback,
Starting point is 01:19:07 reads the best play designer, the receiving card is the best, and they may have the second or first best tied end in the league. You feel good with that. Yeah, I'd rather just sit in the sidelines as a coach and watch my defense try to – you know, try to stop that. No, Shanahan wanted to put more points on the board. And you're going to do that against Kansas City, throwing the ball down the field. Here's Joy with the News.
Starting point is 01:19:27 No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Odell met with his new coach, Kevin Stefansky, recently. Oh, we did. What did Odell? How did that go? He said he's excited about the direction that the Browns are going. He said, just seeing what he did with the Vikings for a long time with Thielan and Diggs
Starting point is 01:19:44 and meeting him and seeing where his mind's at for Jarvis and myself, how this will all work out. I have a good feeling about it. I'm hoping that it's a tremendous season for us. We were so close last year, yet so far away. I'm excited about the opportunity. excited to work on it. I don't know how close they were last year, but O'Dell also said he played all of last year hurt with a core muscle injury. He played the entire season injured. And he's
Starting point is 01:20:09 recovering from off-season surgery. He's more motivated than ever to bounce back in 2020. I don't really know what to make of the Browns this year. I think the divisions, you know, Baltimore's not going away. Cincinnati's going to get that. I think that last year was kind of their window to break through. Big Ben's heard. And, right. And, I mean, not that they were going to, you know, take anything from the Ravens, but Big Ben was hurt. Steelers had a lot up and down while still, I mean, kind of managing to put together a nice season despite all of that. But, you know, the Bengals out of it, it was just kind of a season where you felt like the Browns could get something rolling and they obviously did not. So now they're in a more, I think, stable position.
Starting point is 01:20:47 I don't know if O'Dell will actually be there next year if someone comes with something that makes sense for the Browns. But I just think the division is different now. The Bengals are going to have Joe Burrow, which will be all eyes on Cincinnati in that division. Lamar Jackson's going to get better than he was last year. Big Ben's back. Big Ben's back. And by the way, here's got to start with winning your division. Here's the other thing.
Starting point is 01:21:08 Baltimore's front seven defensively at the end of the year was nasty. Pittsburgh's front seven is San Francisco's. I mean, it's young and great. So, I mean, I look at Cleveland, and I, Baker Mayfield in that offensive line, nothing against Baker. It's still a question. He can play, but the O lines bad. That means four games against Pittsburgh's front seven and Baltimore's front seven. Good luck.
Starting point is 01:21:33 You have to start with winning your division. Yes. And their division just is going to be very different. You can make an argument if Burrough is as good as we think and they get to like seven and nine. Most talented division. I mean, outside of the NFC West, Seattle, Rams, it's certainly an argument. AFC North, if Burrow hits. If Joe can really play and they're okay, they're not terrible.
Starting point is 01:21:53 But even if, even if Burrow. hits or not, it's kind of a little bit of a Kyler Murray situation where, you know, you have a new young coach, obviously who's been there for a year, but it's like we're going to be paying attention to them whether they're great or not. So there's just, I don't know how relevant the Brown's going to be next year. So the Patriots want to bring Tom Brady back and he will reportedly listen to what the team has to offer. They plan to extend themselves financially to keep the quarterback there in 2020. And they would be willing to pay him over $30 million next year to do so. Brady has never made more than $23 million a year with the Patriots free agency begins March 18th,
Starting point is 01:22:29 and they can start negotiating with prospective free agents March 16th to try and bring in help for Brady. I don't get this situation at all. To me, if you're going to stay in New England, what's the point in taking the most money now? What's the point? Especially coming off last year, you had no weapons last year, so you're going to make it harder on the Patriots to get weapons in there this year, why would you not just go somewhere else where they have the money to pay you in
Starting point is 01:22:59 and you're going to have weapons there? It's going to be interesting. It's funny. It's a weird time for Tom to ask for money because off his worst year and they actually this year, more than any year, need to spend money. Well, they need I thought it was a great point by Doug Gottlie. Greg Olson, New England,
Starting point is 01:23:16 is a very competent veteran guy. If you could sign Greg Olson, then I can draft two speed receipts. because I think Nikiel, Harry, and Sunu, and Edelman are fine, but they're not ones. You need an over-the-top weapon. You need an over-the-top weapon. I like the Greg Olson idea. But also, look, like Brady is in the last year or two of his career.
Starting point is 01:23:38 I think it's safe that's comfortable. I feel comfortable saying that now. This system is very hard. Brady is incredibly demanding. I mean, as he should be, but where is that, where is that those relationships? being formed that need to happen to make that offense work. I'm so into the Greg Olson Patriot thing. I can't even see straight.
Starting point is 01:23:58 God, since Godleaf said that an hour ago, it's all the only thing it's on my mind other than lunch. It's very interesting. What are you going to have for lunch? Tune a sandwich? I don't know. I have Greg Olson's number. I told you know, it's funny.
Starting point is 01:24:08 I got his number the other day. I said, I'm not one of these guys that calls. I'm like, I don't. I don't call. I think I'm going to call Greg Olson. Why don't you shoot him a text? That's probably more appropriate. I think I'm going to text.
Starting point is 01:24:20 Do you usually call? Are you a caller or a texter? I'm a text. But every time I get a number from like an athlete, I'm like, listen, I'm not a bother you guy. You get one text a year. But when I text Greg Olson, an hour after I got his number, then he's going to be like, oh, crap.
Starting point is 01:24:35 What's not in an hour? I think we had one last week. Greg Olson's like, I thought he said he didn't text. I gave him my number four days ago and he's texting. I mean, what's the worst that's going to happen? He's not going to respond? I want him to like me. There's worst things than people are not liking.
Starting point is 01:24:48 And Greg is a nice guy. I'm sure he's still going to like you. Tui and Gouley don't like me. I need people to like me at this point in my life. Finally, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys have expressed that getting a new deal done is their top priority. Dak has even said he hopes he won't be franchise tag. And he's planning on working out at the star.
Starting point is 01:25:07 Isn't planning on working out at the star until he has his new deal, which is, of course, the move that Zeke Elliott did when he was down in Cabo. You and I root for stories, Joy. This is a great story. It's saucy. Although I think you and I are complete, uncomplete opposite side. We are. So this is the first time.
Starting point is 01:25:22 that Dax made a bold statement about the state of his contract negotiations. I think it was last week he said, or it might have been two weeks ago, that he said, he did say a little something like, you know, he thought it would have been done already. Oh, he's not happy. For DAC, this is aggressive because DAC has been very quiet about it all year. I want to focus on the season. I want to focus on my team. Stephen Jones in September's like, oh, our bank, our brink trucks right outside.
Starting point is 01:25:47 He made it telling him he was going to get all this money. Well, that was September. So we're in February now. He has a ton of leverage with three agencies only a few weeks away, but they do have the Cowboys do have the option of the franchise tag. Now, listen, I don't like the idea of the franchise tag at all. You do not. I don't know how you don't just pay, DAC, for multiple reasons.
Starting point is 01:26:06 And I understand that he's not Patrick Mahomes, and I understand that he's not Russell Wilson. But that's two guys, and every team needs a franchise quarterback. That's true. So what's your long-term plan? Like, macro, what's your plan? Are you going to draft a guy? Are you going to try and pick up a quarterback in free agency?
Starting point is 01:26:26 You feel like the quarterbacks that are available in free agency are better fit for your team. I just don't know what the long-term plan is if you don't put together a contract for DAC. He might not be necessarily worth that, but sometimes you have to overpay for stability and leadership. And he does also do the winning. That's what I tell my boss is you need to overpay for me. My stability winning, come on. I mean, you come to work every day. That's every day.
Starting point is 01:26:50 Every day you come to work. Overcome. You'd be surprised how valuable that is. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Line news. Jeff Schwartz comes on our show.

Starting point is 01:30:46 Welcome back. Mishlin Endurance XT Silicon Wiper Blades, real world, extreme weather proven. at Walmart only last two times longer. He's the highest rated player on pro football focus through the entire playoffs. Not Patrick Mahalm is right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Joining us now, Coward Global Satellite Network, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. First of all, Mitchell, was there a doubt you're down 20 to 10, and this is the San Francisco defense. Take me into a huddle. Take me to the sidelines.
Starting point is 01:31:18 Was there the small, slightest bit of panic? No, I don't think there was panic. I think that's kind of emblematic of what we've seen all postseason is, you know, we've gotten down. We haven't tried to, but we've gotten in the situations and we got completely trusting each other. But, you know, going against this defensive line, like you mentioned, that's not a team you want to get down to. That's not a team you want to be in a two-minute drive against with all the fast rushers they have. When you went into the game, you have a game plan. Andy Reid's great off a buy.
Starting point is 01:31:49 But the first three quarters, Mitchell, were pretty choppy for your offense. Was this the best defense you had faced this year? Well, I think defense-al-line-wise, I mean, you know, we faced a few pretty good players throughout the year. You know, got a lot in the AFC West. But for the depth that they had, you know, to have that starting four,
Starting point is 01:32:08 they got five first-round guys, and then they were able to take those four out and bring in four more that are pretty high-quality players. So I think from a pure defense-aline depth perspective, definitely the best we faced up front. You know, on the back end, I don't study those guys quite as much, but it did seem like, you know, total package. This defense was going to be the best.
Starting point is 01:32:26 You know, it's interesting. Everybody loves Andy Reed. And I had picked the Niners, but I said, if Kansas City wins, I'm all good. I love Andy Reed. Brett Vietz, the GM. It's really well run. It's a great franchise. For you, everybody loves it.
Starting point is 01:32:45 Mike Vic talks about it. about dealing with Andy Reid. Orlando Scandrick, a defensive player yesterday, talks about Andy Reid. When did you guys connect? When did you know Andy was different? Well, you realize really early on. I mean, you've had my brother on a bunch
Starting point is 01:33:03 and he was here in 2013 for Coach Reed's first year. And so I knew when I was signing that I was going to enjoy Coach Reed from his firsthand experience. And then you just kind of see him interact with people. I mean, I think the first thing that jumped off the bat to me was there weren't, you know, 20-minute team meetings every day.
Starting point is 01:33:18 We had one team meeting at the beginning of OTAs, and then didn't have a team meeting for a while after that. I mean, he just finds the right guys. He trusts them. You know, he doesn't have to get up there and give all these grand speeches every day. And so you realize that he puts a lot of trust in his players. And then, you know, as you mentioned,
Starting point is 01:33:35 I mean, everyone loves them. And so you want to reward that trust and you want to do well by him. Eight years in the NFL, Cleveland and Kansas City has worked out well for you. We know Patrick has a total gun. You could see his college tape. But when did you know, Mitchell, beyond that, the it quality? Because, you know, you can see tape he can throw.
Starting point is 01:33:56 This league's full of guys that have big arms. But when did you know, was it a practice, a moment early, you're like, oh, Lord, this kid's different. Well, like you said, you can see it in practice, but, you know, there's really no stakes in practice. There's no repercussions for an interception or a bad play. I mean, we've seen the stories, you know, he's told about how coach likes the quarterback to push things in practice. They want to know their limitations. And so you want to see it happen in a game.
Starting point is 01:34:20 And, you know, you had a play in his first preseason where he was rolling out to the right and kind of threw one of his passes, you know, 60 yards down, threw it off his back foot right over the DB, right to the receiver. And you kind of just smiled and said, all right, looks like how to work against live competition.
Starting point is 01:34:33 And then, you know, I got to play with him, you know, his first year, that last game against Denver. And, you know, totally unfazed. I mean, he goes into Denver, week 17. And, you know, they were out of playoffs, but that's still a tough place for us to play. and no delayed games, no operation penalties, you know, no nervousness, no cool, or he was just totally cool. I mean, he drove it down the field to kick a field goal to win the game and, you know, kind of just a typical pat.
Starting point is 01:34:58 Listen, this is not to pick on the Browns, but that organization has struggled and Andy Reid hasn't. When you went from Cleveland to Kansas City, just structurally and organizationally, did you know this thing was going to work to the level it has? Well, I haven't trust that, you know, the people that I've been around and, you know, took advice from, they all recommended Kansas City as a place to be because of that. I mean, you know, it starts with the Hunt family and Clark Hunt and the things that they've done. I mean, it's the name that you're associated with the NFL is Lamar Hunt. And so, you know, you're going to one of the greatest families in NFL history. And then no one would coach have done in Philadelphia, you know, all the, all the things you get accomplished. I mean, getting to the playoffs and getting to those championship games and obviously getting to.
Starting point is 01:35:42 the one Super Bowl. You know, it's more tough to do that over a few years and over, you know, 10 to 15 years than it is to kind of get hot the one year that happened. And so, like you said, I mean, coming from Cleveland, you know, you just get there. Like I said, there's not those meetings every day. It's a setup where, you know, one guy hires the guy under him. They trust each other and they just roll from there. And there's one goal. There's a clear expectation. And everyone knows how to follow it. You know, Mitchell, finally, we were saying this. Kansas City, the old Willie Roof offensive line. Many believes the best offensive line of all time. And it's funny, when you, Kansas City is one of those barbecue, middle of America, no nonsense. If I was an offensive lineman, there are places that feel like a
Starting point is 01:36:28 really good home for offensive linemen. Kansas City feels like that's where offensive linemen should go play. Do you feel appreciated that the Midwest ethos as a chief? Yeah, for sure. I mean, like you said, of, you know, the thing that the city is known best for is a barbecue, you're going to fit right in. So, you know, just a natural place to be. I mean, like you said, I mean, the city appreciates hard work and, you know, sacrifice. And, you know, that's kind of the offensive line way is, you know, you go about your business. You work hard. You know, you do your best to protect the quarterback, forget the running back. And if all things are going well, nobody hears about you, no one says your name. And, you know, like you said, the people of Kansas City, I mean, they're been
Starting point is 01:37:11 awesome. You know, as an opposing player, going into Arrowhead and the fans, and it's going to be crazy loud, and then getting a chance to play for the city and all the support. I mean, it's just incredible. Finally, that trick play pulled from the 1948 Rose Bowl
Starting point is 01:37:28 was my favorite play of the game. Did you guys just put that in? No, that's been in since May or June. That's been in for a while. You know, we had a meeting. He started showing us. this old play and we weren't really sure where it's going with that. And he told us we were going to try it out.
Starting point is 01:37:48 We were going to put it in. We all kind of looked at each other a little skew and kind of just trusted that coach would know what to do. But we were practicing that all year. I mean, you know, a lot of teams kind of have, you know, probably three to six plays throughout the season that, you know, if you get far enough down the call sheet, eventually it'll get called. You know, it usually just needs the right situation.
Starting point is 01:38:08 And it just so happened. I mean, that play, like I said, practice, all year, but typically a short yardish play. And then, you know, in this particular game, we liked it once you got into that five-year-line and just so happened that it was fourth and one from the five. So both the situations we wanted to call it. And, you know, what a stage to bring it out. Well, I can already tell you I like you better than your brother, Jeff.
Starting point is 01:38:29 He can be a little annoying. No, but we love him. Mitchell, good luck. Congrats to you on a young career, eight years so far. Full steam ahead. congrats on the Super Bowl and everything going well for you. Thanks, man. Yeah, thank you so much.
Starting point is 01:38:46 Thanks for having me. You bet. You know, it's funny about that. He said that thing's been in since May, that play. And Damien Woody's a friend of mine. He talked about that when he was with a Patriots. He said, we would just practice the same stuff over and over. And you'd be like, what's the point of this?
Starting point is 01:39:02 I've done this play a hundred times. And then in week 14, he goes, we'd pull out this weird situational, you know, play. in the red zone, a bubble screen, and we're like a quirky play. And he goes, you think we'd practice it all week, but he goes, you know, these Andy Reid's and these Belichick's, they have plays. You know, a lot of these young coaches, and it's, you know, I like a lot of these young guys. But it's like giving a young teenager $20. It's just burning a hole in their pocket.
Starting point is 01:39:31 They've got to spend the money. A lot of these veteran coaches, Reed and Belichick, they'll have a plan for two years and never use it. They're very patient. Sometimes they call it vanity play calling. Lane Kiffin, they used to get criticized for this. Like Lane was a very clever play designer and play caller. But if he had a play, it was going to use it. And young coaches, I think Sean McVeigh of the Rams sometimes gets a little cute.
Starting point is 01:39:54 Kyle Shanahan, it's a little showing off. But for Andy Reid to have that puppy tucked away, nine months, use it there. Pretty cool. All right, good stuff. Hour three is coming up. Mock drafts are out. I'm a freak about that. So we'll talk about that with Bucky Brooks.
Starting point is 01:40:10 coming around the corner. Don't go anywhere. Philadelphia. Trade, Joel M. B. That next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 01:40:25 1-800 Flowers right now, 18 stemmed and Channing Rose Medley. 29 bucks or double the stems. 20 bucks more, that's it. 1-800flowers.com. The code is heard. Bucky Brooks played in the NFL. Second round picky. Scouted in the NFL helped build the Panthers and Seahawks.
Starting point is 01:40:40 and now he works for the NFL network. All right, you were never sold on Jimmy Garoppolo. You were never sold on him. I'm not a hater. Well, no, I mean, your job is to have opinions. I like him. I don't think he's great, but I like him. You know, I think he's in that 10 to 12 range.
Starting point is 01:40:53 I think he's better than a lot of people. But Kyle Shanahan's getting beat up. And I defended Kyle. I said, listen, when you face great, Mahomes, you do call plays differently. You do, you get more aggressive because you don't want to sit in the sidelines and watch Mahom win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:41:09 So he didn't run. the clock out. He took shots down the field. But you're defending Kyle Shanahan for another reason, and that's Garoppolo. Yes. Look, Kyle Shanahan, to me, that one of the best coaching jobs that we have seen this season. And I think when people dig
Starting point is 01:41:24 into the All-22 and they look at Garapolo, they'll notice that he is throwing two wide-open receivers because of the way Shanahan designs the offense. I think what the Super Bowl was was Kyle Shanahan's statement on his own quarterback and Pat Mahomes. If you listen to
Starting point is 01:41:40 the post-game presser afterwards when people were asking him, why did you run out of the clock at the end of the first half? He said, they had three timeouts, and I didn't want to give them the ball back with that quarterback over there. So he's telling you that he feared their quarterback more than he trusted his own quarterback. And there's nothing wrong with that. Part of why we celebrate the New England Patriots is because they play complimentary football. What Kyle Shanahan did in the Super Bowl, he played complimentary football. The way that he called his offense was to protect his defense and to put his team in a position to win games. Early in the game when Jimmy Garapolo threw the interception, look, he dialed it back,
Starting point is 01:42:20 but he also decided play action. Play action on early downs when they're expecting to run. Everyone feared the 49ers running game, so he set his quarterback up with easy completions. I think he is really getting beaten up unfairly because even with all of that, people talking about a fourth quarter, second and five, he threw it, he threw it on a rundown to give his quarterback a chance. Quarterback missed the, he missed the layup. Third down in 10, he diagrams a play where Emmanuel Sanders is wide open for a game-winning
Starting point is 01:42:49 touchdown. His quarterback missed. So as much as we want to take him the task, at some point, we also have to put it on the players to execute. I thought he called a great game. It's just unfortunate that his team didn't do what it was necessary to win. Do you think they'd move off him? I mean, do you think they would even draft?
Starting point is 01:43:07 I mean, okay, I'll ask this. you believe in the room, Shanahan and John Lynch are having a discussion over a bagel over the next couple of weeks is, can we win this thing? Look, I think there could be a conversation because, look, they've won a ton of games. And it's hard to move off a quarterback when you've had so much success. Right. But you do wonder how much better could they be if they had a guy that he fully could entrust to call plays, and that guy could, he could erase his mistakes.
Starting point is 01:43:35 So, for instance, Andy Reid has the luxury of not having to call them. perfect game because five or six times a game. Pat Mahomes can go off script and make him right. Same with Russell Wilson. Same with Russell Wilson and some of the other quarterbacks with Jimmy Garapolo and I think it was now more praying in that game. Jimmy Garapolo doesn't have the escapeability element. Some of that was due to the knee injury. But Pat Mahomes can play off the script when you're looking at the way the game is going. For so long, it would put it in basketball terms. For so long at quarterback, we look for shooters, pure pocket passers, guys to get it right. the game is evolving to, you need a score at that position.
Starting point is 01:44:13 A guy who can just find a way to get first downs and score points, that's what they're looking for. I do wonder if he's looking for more of a scoring presence at the position as opposed to a natural passer. I think it's very fair. Bucky Brooks joining us. I said, Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, are blank check guys. Here's the check.
Starting point is 01:44:30 Fill in the space. I'll figure out the rest of it. Those are my guys. After that, Aaron Rogers included, I'm going to negotiate my quarterback. Carson Wentz, I like a lot, injuries. Aaron Rogers looks a tad old. I don't think he's in his prime. Deshawn Watson, I like not love.
Starting point is 01:44:45 I don't think he's a natural thrower. And I think sometimes he misses people too. Mahomes, Russell, here's the check sign it filled in. What do you do with Dak, who by any reasonable measure is somewhere between the 13th and 17th best quarterback in the league? He's won a division, but he's not a blank check guy. Yeah, so here's the thing because you speak on a couple different issues. One, when you talk about the blank check guy,
Starting point is 01:45:08 the blank check guy should be reserved for what we call the VIP section of quarterbacks. Those guys do make it right. And when you pay them big money, you're paying them big money knowing my team is flawed, but my quarterback is good enough that we can win anyway. Kansas City wasn't the best team in the Super Bowl based on talent. We can talk about their quarterback, their skill guys. San Francisco has got a better defense, the running game in the offensive line. But because Pat Mahomes is so superior, they're able to win.
Starting point is 01:45:34 Russell Wilson, too. Yeah, Eric Mangini calls that a force multiplier. Yes. Mahomes and Russell make everybody a step better. Yes. Now, when you get to this section of quarterbacks that we're talking about now, the reason why it's so hard with Dak Prescott is Dak Prescott can look at his classmates, Jared Goff and Carson Wentz.
Starting point is 01:45:53 And he can go number for number, either individual or team statistics, and say, check, I can match those guys in every category. So why would I give my team a discount when those other guys have signed deals? into $32 to $34 million range. That's what complicates it. What is going to happen or what needs to happen? There needs to be a correction at the quarterback position. Because Jimmy Garapolo, Derek Carr, even Matthew Stafford, Kurt Cousins,
Starting point is 01:46:20 all those guys signed high $20 million deals. It's hard for a Dak Prescott who has more accomplishments than some of those guys to say, oh, yeah, I'm okay being a mid-tier quarterback when it comes to compensation. It's just hard to get a player to do that. when he knows on the field, I've outplayed some of those other guys. By the way, Joe Burrell, I was just told by a producer, wants to come on our show next week. Joy loves Joe Burrell.
Starting point is 01:46:44 I like him. We'll see. But I want to, now, now you're a former scout. Now, I think Tua, because of his accuracy, works for me, medical issue. I think all these guys, I think Joe Burrow, size, touch. I don't think he's a great athlete. I think his arm is good, not special. I think we're freaking out a little.
Starting point is 01:47:03 But he is a franchise quarterback. Justin Herbert, I think is erratic but talented. Easton at Washington's got a gun, but he's all over the map for me. I'm going to throw this out. Here's my one-player mock draft. Jordan Love is going to go top 10. Okay, 6-4-225. My guys tell me his issues are mechanics.
Starting point is 01:47:27 That's coaching. He has not had great coaching. 6-4, mobile, lively arm. Am I nuts? You're not nuts because here's what happens, and here's what happens in the scouting community. All of us do this when we make a mistake on a player. The guy who just won the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes, several of us in the scouting community saw him as a great talent, but you just wondered, could you harness him and get him to the point where he could play winning football?
Starting point is 01:47:53 Because at Texas Tech, he did everything. He ran around, he made plays, he threw it up, he took chances, and you wondered, man, could he play winning football in terms of not turning it over? So now fast forward. He goes into the league. Second year, he's the MVP. Third year, he's a Super Bowl champion and a Super Bowl MVP. Now you look at Jordan Love. Jordan Love has tremendous talent.
Starting point is 01:48:14 Jordan Love has the ability to make these plays on and off scroft. When you squint, there are some people that say, maybe I see a little Pat Mahomes. So because of that, he is going to benefit from the Pat Mahomes bounce. Now, does he play like that as a pro? Remains to be seen. But you will see people take more risks. Because Pat Mahomes worked out. No, I mean, when I watch these tapes, I see some of Holmes.
Starting point is 01:48:37 Now, watch this. Watch this right here. Not this. This isn't the one. But he makes a little scramble to the left. He looks. Is this the one? I mean, that's just kind of, that's just, you know, the flip.
Starting point is 01:48:50 That's a little bit of Mahomes. So what you're going to do is you're going to see people who see those things. And they connect it. And they go back and they think about what Pat Mahomes did this. He didn't have this. Mechanically, he wasn't fixed. But they figured it out in Kansas City. How about this?
Starting point is 01:49:02 buy me dinner. Raiders draft him. Buy me dinner if it's true. I'm okay with that. Can I buy you dinner at your own restaurant? Because I'm sure you get a company. It's just hamburgers. I can do better than that. Not just hamburgers.
Starting point is 01:49:15 Good ones, though. All right, let me ask you this. So the story out from Tom Kern in New England, somebody I trust, we've had him on the show. He's a real reporter. Says the Patriots are going to extend Tom's contract over 30 million. Your thoughts. Look, I like Tom Brady,
Starting point is 01:49:29 and I have a tremendous amount of respect for all the things that he's done. But if anyone really looked at the tape last year, Tom Brady is a depreciating asset. You said that before Thanksgiving. He's a declining player. So now you're going to plump. We just talked about the quarterback situation and money and potentially giving DAC Prescott a lot of money.
Starting point is 01:49:46 Well, Tom Brady, look, if we give him $30 million, it's an appreciation contract. But what you can't do is you now can't fortify the rest of the team to really help him. There's a reason why quarterbacks typically don't play until their 40s. It's hard for them to sustain an elite level of play. If they do this, I would be surprised because Bill Belichick has moved on from several great players before they've gotten to the point where they started to decline. If he sticks around with Tom Brady, to me, this means it's coming above him.
Starting point is 01:50:15 This is a Robert Kraft decision to keep the franchise quarterback in the fold. Good stuff. Bucky Brooks, by the way, four hours every Saturday on Fox Sports Radio, four to eight. Is that new? No, no, I've been doing that all year. I'm busy on Saturday. I know. So you don't tune in.
Starting point is 01:50:31 Jonas Knoxon. myself, we have the little show. Okay, all right, all right. And again, I'd like to make a major announcement, though it's not set in stone, Joe Burrell wants to be on the show. Certainly welcome. You know, I'll size him up. If he comes over here and he looks a little thin, I'll drop into a third round pick.
Starting point is 01:50:45 But if he looks bulky, oh, wow. He might fight you. He may reach over. I know. I heard he was feisty. I heard he wanted to come on the show. He wanted to get after me, which I love. I said Baker Mayfield's always welcome.
Starting point is 01:50:57 I'd love that Baker. He was welcome in my hand. I'm a very tough one, bro. But he knows. I've been a huge supporter over all year. I've been tough on him just because I don't make you guys. You guys are saying Brady and I'm like scale. I lose you guys.
Starting point is 01:51:09 I specifically said don't say Brady. I mean, like people I respect are like oh, he's Tom Brady. I'm like, there's only one Tom Brady on earth ever. It's like all those people that said Baker was Drew Brees. I'm like, that's the comp. The sixth best quarterback ever? That's the comp. All right, Joy with the news.
Starting point is 01:51:26 No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So Andre Aguadala wants to be traded by Thursday's deadline. His Grizzlies, teammates, Dylan Brooks and John Morantz, said the trade rumors aren't a distraction, which they really shouldn't be because he hasn't played all year anyway. But they hope they get to face him at some point this season. And Steph Curry got into the mix.
Starting point is 01:51:47 So, like, you know, NFL season's over now. We got time for the, you know, all the NBA drama is starting to pick up. There we go, drama. Right on time. Steph Curry got in the mix like posting a picture of Igadala with the Larry O'Brien trophy and the sh-em-moji. and John Morant saw this and clapped back with his own and a shrug emoji and a picture of Kevin Durant with the finals MVP, just like a little reminder that Katie's not there anymore
Starting point is 01:52:14 I got a question with Andre Aguadala. Like people like him, right? I think people like it, yeah. Yeah. So why won't he play for Memphis? I don't know why he doesn't want to play for Memphis. I think he just wants to go to a contender. I don't know why he's not playing now.
Starting point is 01:52:27 So the Memphis people would not be happy with that. Like the players are like... They're not. They're not. But they also, he hasn't been with them. So it's kind of like, you know, he's out of sight out of mind. But I, by the way, Memphis and John Morant, they're the eighth seed right now, Memphis. Yes, no.
Starting point is 01:52:43 Memphis is. Oklahoma City. And John Moran is legitimately a star. So they're in a good position moving forward. By the way, where's Houston? Tuey, you're from there. Where's Houston? They're fifth right now.
Starting point is 01:52:55 Houston's making the playoffs. They are. You said they weren't. They are. They're going to make the playoffs. They're not even to the trading death. line. Why don't you give me some more hockey scores? They are going to make the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:53:04 But, uh, the heat. Doey's banging on me. The heater reportedly interested in Andre Aguadala, which I find interesting, but I want to know what they want to give up for him. Because he, I mean, look, there's not, I'm not giving up a lot for. He's an incredible role player, but I don't want to give, you don't can't give up too much one year left. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:53:21 Maybe. He's got a year left. I'm not giving anything up for that. So the 49ers will be dealing with the Super Bowl loss for a while and George Kittle had the hardest time watching his coach, Kyle Shanahan. He said it was brutal. I don't know how to describe it. It just sucked. Kyle was great, though. That's the one thing I do like about Kyle is he keeps it real all the time.
Starting point is 01:53:38 I love playing for him. Kyle Eusecheck also had nothing but praise for Shanahan saying, I have so much love and respect for Kyle. He's the best coach that I've ever played for. He's the same guy every single day no matter what happens. He always looks to himself first when it comes to blame and he takes our ideas and suggestions and we'll really listen. It sucks because we hate to hear any negativity about him and we know it's coming. Well, look. I mean, listen, Kyle Shanahan's going to be fine.
Starting point is 01:54:02 The 49ers are going to be fine. But you lose the Super Bowl. You get, I mean, you get criticized. That's how it works. Like, the winners get praised and the losers you have to be critical of because you didn't do what you needed to do to win the game. Now, I don't think it's all on Kyle Shanahan. But also the criticism that he's getting, I don't think is unfair. I think a little is unfair.
Starting point is 01:54:22 I think Garoppolo didn't play great in the fourth. Garopolo missed a throw. I said this yesterday. He didn't get a co. He didn't get her officiating break on George Kittle. that's points and Jimmy G. missed a wide open Emmanuel Sanders. I don't even know if you can call it.
Starting point is 01:54:35 Here's what I don't like. I didn't hate that call. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. It's just what it is. Here's what I don't like. I'm listening to radio yesterday. And I wanted to jam a ice pick through my retina.
Starting point is 01:54:45 It's a bunch of guys going, you should have run on that play. Stop it. Stop like second guessing. Kyle Shanahan's play calling. No, I don't think it's that. I think he was conservative at the end of the first half. You can't do.
Starting point is 01:55:00 Well, there's a little concern. The ball was pinned deep and they had a minute 40. I mean, what do you want to do? A minute 40? That's not a lot of time. Peshmer home scores three touchdowns in a minute 40. Which is exactly what happens. It's the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:55:14 Every second counts. You're talking to all this stuff about how, you know, we trust Jimmy G and all that. Okay. Do it. This is the moment. If I'm the Niners, the only thing I'd criticize them for, I would have called a timeout, where John Lynch was going timeout. That was my first thought.
Starting point is 01:55:30 Call a timeout, get it back. He didn't. Should be noted if the kiddle catch is counted, they do get points. They just get it kind of unconventionally. If that is caught, they would get points before half. Yes. And it always comes down to one or two plays in these big games, as we know. Whoever makes the play, who doesn't make the play,
Starting point is 01:55:49 it usually determines who wins or loses these games. But he also did blow two double-digit leads into Super Bowls. Not him specifically, but he's like, there's not. something to that. Yeah, well, he had Matt Ryan and Jimmy G and he lost him a Holmes and Brady. I don't, I, you know, I don't have time for excuses. We're very busy around here.
Starting point is 01:56:09 Finally, Chiefs defensive lineman, Derek Nottie, found a special way to celebrate his Super Bowl win. He paid the adoption fees for any dogs at Kansas City Shelter, the Casey Pet Project, who were available for adoption as of Sunday. The organization said that 20 dogs were adopted through the program by Monday afternoon. Nottie shared the news on Twitter,
Starting point is 01:56:28 saying it was the perfect way to cap off a great season, and I thought that was a really nice thing. So he paid your fees, anybody who adopted a dog? Anybody who wants to go adopt a dog at the KC Pet Project, all the fees were already paid. Well, if you're a Rams player and did that, it cost you about 40 million because there's so many people here. I guess in Kansas City you could do that.
Starting point is 01:56:47 Well, it's just for this one shelter. Oh, it's for all the shelters. Oh, okay. At one shelter, he paid for all the adoption fees for the dogs. I like that. Yeah, so if you got your... So if I have my shelter, my one shelter... Yes, he just paid all the three.
Starting point is 01:56:59 fees for that shelter. I thought it was the whole city. No, not the whole city. But I mean, yeah, I mean, even still, it's a nice thing to do. But you can bring your, you can bring your new pet to the parade tomorrow. We have a shelter dog. Yeah, I mean, you should adopt always. Oh, they're very loving.
Starting point is 01:57:14 Yeah. Incredibly loving. All right, joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. We've got to have some fun here. I know it's early, but half the teams...
Starting point is 01:57:29 that didn't, that did make the playoffs, half will not make it next year. And there's going to be at least one team that will double their wins. Yeah. Last year I predicted I said San Francisco won four. You were here. I said they're going to double their wins. I put them on, I think, nine. I also said the Jets would double their win from four to eight.
Starting point is 01:57:50 They went seven, but their quarterback got mono. So we know half the NFL playoff teams won't make it. We know two or three teams will double their wins. my early but not, well, sort of kind of way too early, NFL herd hierarchy for next year, a surprise team in it. The most improved team in the league, in my opinion. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Canucks Bruins, Discover card key matchup, go to discover.com slash cashback match.
Starting point is 01:58:22 They match all your cashback. You earn into your first year automatically. No limit on how much you can match. A lot of the very good teams in the NFL, half the playoff teams last year, this year, were not in the playoffs last year. You lose about half. Now, I do think it's unique this year because many of the really good teams in the NFL are young. Baltimore's got a lot of young players.
Starting point is 01:58:45 So does Kansas City. So does Green Bay. So does San Francisco. So does Seattle. So I do think you will get more than half the playoff teams this year back. But there's going to be one or two major surprises to make the playoff. playoffs. Nobody thought Baltimore would be this good. Nobody thought the Titans would make that run. I was surprised New Orleans came back again. They're another team with a lot of good young players.
Starting point is 01:59:11 So this is our way early top 10 for next year. Our herd hierarchy way too early. Here we go. Heard hierarchy. Time is now. Let's go. The top 10 NFL teams according to college. Number one. San Francisco is going to play with its hair on fire. They think they outplayed Kansas City and lost. Outside of Jimmy Ward in the secondary, they don't, they're not going to lose any free agents. I think they re-sign Emmanuel Sanders. Their receivers are super young.
Starting point is 01:59:45 Their defensive line is super young. All their best players, in my opinion, are kids. This team is really built for the future. I think they're the number one team in the NFL next year. Number two. Baltimore, humiliated in the playoffs at home, again, like San Francisco is going to really have a good offseason. Lamar Jackson made a big leap year one to two. I don't see that stopping.
Starting point is 02:00:11 Now, I do worry about cornerback Jimmy Smith and cornerback Brandon Carr. I thought their cornerback play at the end of the year was sensational. They're both free agents. One's a club option. I would like to see them bring both those. back, but this is a running powerhouse. And teams that run the football with that kind of O-line and personnel, they don't go anywhere. You can bring a running game year to year.
Starting point is 02:00:35 I think they've got the right elements to be excellent. Number three. Kansas City, I don't think they win the Super Bowl. They did, let's be honest, they got some breaks. They trail the Super Bowl in the fourth. They got Tennessee and Houston both at home. Lousy defenses. They got some playoff breaks.
Starting point is 02:00:54 Didn't have to face the Ravens, didn't have to face New England again. It got a little bit of a playoff break. I think they're very good. Chris Jones, defensive end, is a free agent. Sign him now. I like him a lot. I'll just say that. Got him at three.
Starting point is 02:01:12 Number four. I like Philadelphia. First of all, here's the thing about Philadelphia. We all know the injuries, right? They lost their whole receiving court. They lost all their running backs. Carson Went still completed. 64% of his throws, 27 TD, seven picks in the 93-passer rating.
Starting point is 02:01:28 That's absurd. It's why I love him. They're not going to suffer those injuries. Also, their weakness, speed at receiver, Deshawn Jackson comes back, and it's the deepest wide receiver draft, perhaps ever. So their issue is very, very solvable. The rest of the team is well-coached, well-run, and I thought Carson Wentz, if you don't think this guy is special after that last five weeks, there's nothing I can say.
Starting point is 02:01:53 I mean, he was throwing to scout team guys and beat Dallas and got him into the playoffs. Philadelphia number four. Number five. Seattle, by the way, seven of eight seasons in Seattle, Russell Wilson's led up to double-digit wins. They got some draft picks. I think their young players are excellent. Hey, if not for three running back injuries in the last two weeks, I think they go to Green Bay win and they're in the NFC. championship. This is the team. We forget. Seattle beat San Francisco. Seattle is a matchup
Starting point is 02:02:30 problem for San Francisco. They struggle with Russell Wilson. They just lost all their good running backs and their offensive lines. They had massive injuries late, or they go to Green Bay and win. So Seattle surprised me this year. And, I mean, let's be honest, Pete Carroll's strength as a coach is not with veterans. It's teaching young players the game and they got some really nice young I think will grow well with Pete Carroll. Number six. I'm going to put the Saints in here because I whiffed on them this year. I thought they pulled back.
Starting point is 02:03:00 They've got terrific young players. They've got all their players that I like bottled up. This is dependent on Drew Breeze coming back. Teddy Bridgewater is going to end up, in my opinion, at an Indianapolis, maybe the Chargers, somewhere like that. So they won't have Teddy Bridgewater. That's the free agent. They're going to, the guy they're going to lose.
Starting point is 02:03:21 And it's dependent on Drew Breeze coming back. I don't seem as a Super Bowl team next year, but I think they'll be really good. I'd put them at six. Number seven. New England. They'll be good. It's still a division with a lot of young quarterbacks. As much as we crush Brady, Greg Olson's out there at tight end.
Starting point is 02:03:42 Hunter Henry could be out there. All the young rookie receivers have another year in the system. I think we're over exaggerate. Do they have the best coach in football? Yes. the last two drafts, they've got a nice set of running backs. They had, again, they had a lot of injuries. They lost their left tackle.
Starting point is 02:03:59 They lost their center. They lost their kicker. They lost their fullback. It was a year in which they got caught with some injuries and they didn't have capable backups. I think they'll be a very good football team. And it's still a division with Darnold, Tua, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh Allen. They still have Brady. Number eight.
Starting point is 02:04:21 Rams missed the playoffs. They'll be back. First of all, they were fourth in sacks and ninth in takeaways. They got nothing but playmakers all over this roster. Now, it may be a little top heavy, but they finished seventh and total offense. All we did all years, like, oh, it's mayhem. They were seventh in total offense. They had a center retire.
Starting point is 02:04:41 They got rid of a right guard, and then they had that coupled with injuries on the O line, and it was mid-season. They were just bailing water mid-season. They're going to drag. O line. They're going to get healthier up front. McVey is still an excellent coach. This is a roster that has Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey. I think they have the second or third best receiving core in the NFL with Cooper Cup. I like their tight ends. I like Robert Woods. They got Brandon Cooks. Let's not go crazy here. I think they need to draft another running back and
Starting point is 02:05:10 offensive linemen. This is a good roster. They're back in the playoffs. Number nine. Green Bay. I think Green Bay is good. They're very, very young. So that's a good. what I like about him. But let me be honest about Green Bay. They're not winning 13 games. I think they got a little bit of a scheduling break. I think they were exposed against the Chargers and the Niners twice. Folks, they finished 15th and points a game and 18th in total offense. They got one receiver, anybody trusts. And so I just don't think offensively, I thought they were kind of average. I do like their last two defensive drafts. I think they will get better. The schedule's tougher.
Starting point is 02:05:52 I don't see 13 wins. I think we get closer to 10. Number 10. My shock, Denver Broncos, this is my double-to-win total team. They went for their last five games. I think they found their quarterback in Drew Locke, who in his five starts, completed 64% of his throws, 90 passer rating, and he's just a puppy. Their defense was top 10 last year. So I think they got the quarterback.
Starting point is 02:06:18 Second year in Vic Fangio's system. Remember, Bradley Chubb, who never gets hurt, got hurt. So Vaughn Miller and Bradley Chubb are still top two or three ends. Great duo. And this division is, who's the Chargers quarterback? What are the Raiders going to be? Outside of Kansas City, I looked at their schedule. I know who they're playing next year.
Starting point is 02:06:39 I think this is my double win total team. I think Denver's the surprise in the league. They went seven and nine, so that would be impressive if they double their wins. They're not going to double their win total. Okay, but you all think they're all think. They were cruddy last year. They went seven and nine. No, they were a tough team.
Starting point is 02:06:53 They were a tough out last year. So I think Denver's a 10-win football team. First of all, they got hosed early in the year against Chicago on a horrible call. They lost two games early in the year on last second field goals. Denver is my double the win. 11 wins. I'm going to go into 11. I really like Denver next year.
Starting point is 02:07:15 They're going to be a lot better than last. You think I'm crazy. No, I don't. If I haven't said 10. I like Denver last year, and I like Drew Locke a lot. I think they found their guy. He's got a little attitude. Joe Burrell's going to be on the show next week.
Starting point is 02:07:29 I have been told he wants to be on the show. It could be a very interesting confrontation. Greg CoSell, as stops by tomorrow. Nick Wright on a Wednesday tomorrow. Speak for yourself is right around the corner. What a lively show. Mock drafts. Do more.
