The Herd with Colin Cowherd - Daniel Cormier GOES BACK AT Jon Jones after CALLING OUT both him and Chael Sonnen

Episode Date: June 12, 2025

Daniel Cormier is BACK to clap back at Jon Jones after his call out of him and his ESPN co-host Chael Sonnen on X. DC talks about the show in Thailand that he was offered to compete against Jon in, an...d why he ultimately decided not to take the spot against Jones. Plus, Cormier calls out Jones for continuing to take shots at people, instead of literally taking a shot at and fighting Tom Aspinall. And DC GOES IN ON why if he were in Jon Jones' shoes, still fighting and the current heavyweight champion of the World, he would have 100% ALREADY FOUGHT Tom Aspinall.  And Cormier speaks on his good friend and the Funky and the Champ's own Ben Askren, and his recent battle with a severe illness. Please send your love and prayers to Ben Askren, his wife Amy, and their family. #Volume #HerdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Winning on Clay is an art. The rallies are relentless. And at the French Open, only the toughest survive. I'd know. I competed there for decades. Join me, Renee Stubbs, on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast for no-nonsense breakdowns of the biggest matches, the toughest players, and the moments that define Roland Garris. She can win.
Starting point is 00:01:21 She's an outsider to win the French fame. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any service. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHart Radio app. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:01:42 And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was crying. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Marquis keep coming to you. like, you know I love you, dog.
Starting point is 00:02:01 You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Volume. All right, guys, hey, it's the boy, D.C., your favorite podcaster and also a role partner. And of course, fellas, when you're in or you're out of the bedroom with your partner or that significant other, you have got to satisfy their needs as you try to satisfy your needs.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It's so important. Hey, the one thing about Roe, when you're in the bedroom, our guys at Roe Sparks, they got your back. With his long-lasting functionality, Roe Sparks are a two-and-one prescription treatment for guys who want more controlled erection.
Starting point is 00:02:47 And it doesn't take long either, because after they dissolve, they work in about 15 minutes on average. It's because the pills dissolve under the tongue and go directly into the bloodstream. Roe connects guys with medical providers, 100% online. So you don't have to waste time in the waiting room.
Starting point is 00:03:07 And if approved, treatment shifts directly to your door. For me, honestly, it's a no-brainer. Roe is a must-have, guys. Trust me, new sex health patients get $15 off of their first order of Roe Sparks on the recurring plan. So connect with a provider at R-O-D-T-C-O-D-C-O-D-C-O-D-C-T-V-T-V. Ro.com slash DC TV to find out if prescription row sparks is right for you. Guys, that's RO, VOT, CO, slash DC TV for $15 off of your first order.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Hey, get them Ro Sparks. I'm telling you, they work. What's up, guys? It's Wednesday, June 11th, and the boy is back. In today's episode, is brought to you by Total Wireless. the official wireless provider of UFC. They're in your corner with unlimited data that won't slow you down.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Guys. Oh, my God. John Jones just won't. He pressure. Just pressure, guys. He's on the pressure, and I don't even know what I did to him. Look, we did this a couple weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:04:21 and I thought we were done with it. But finally, it seems as though it's reaching a little, bit of a boiling point. Now, there's things from both sides, and we will get into that as the video goes on. But first and foremost, a couple weeks ago, I said to John Jones, go fight Tom Aspinall, leave me alone. I thought it was good. Chale and I host a podcast. Chale and I are on the Ultimate fighter together. Chale and I are tasked with talking about the biggest news in the sports of mixed martial arts. It seems as though John Jones does not like being talked about by two of the biggest voices in this game. Chale and I were discussing John Jones last week on our show. I think
Starting point is 00:05:12 it was ESPN. And it prompted this. First off, it's very weird. All right. Talking about yourself in the third person. It really is. But John tweeted this. John Jones whipped both of y'all. But hey, why not team up on a podcast and gossip about his life? Meanwhile, he's out here making your annual salary in a week. Stay busy boys. This is what John Jones wrote. I'm going to pull the curtain back for you guys.
Starting point is 00:05:49 I know what John Jones made in Thailand. I was offered to coach this show with John Jones in Thailand. John Jones's resume is impeccable. John Jones's resume matches up, if not exceeds everyone in the business. John Jones's star power, his ability to sell, matches up with anybody in the business. John Jones, in his ability to bring eyes, matches up with anybody in the business outside of Connor McGregor. But guess what?
Starting point is 00:06:28 Daniel Cormier's resume matches up with anybody in the business. Daniel Cormier brings eyes like people in the business. Daniel Cormier can do and get just about whatever. And I'm talking like John Jones now. He's got me talking in third person. All of that is true. So when they come to me and say, hey, I would like you to coach this show opposite John Jones
Starting point is 00:06:50 knowing the history, they have to come with a nice offer that would peak my interest. Let's say I turn that down. if that money was more than I'm making a year in a week with the jobs that I do, wouldn't I have jumped at that opportunity? Nothing would have stopped me from going to get that opportunity.
Starting point is 00:07:15 John Jones don't make more money than me in a week. John Jones makes more money than me when he fights. And that's it. Outside of that, he ain't getting with me and Chale Gidding from ESPN, the volume, draft kings, total wireless
Starting point is 00:07:31 roast bars monster energy I mean we over here eating so that's just false that's false it's almost like that time the young bucks
Starting point is 00:07:43 this wrestling team said to me we're selling out arenas I'm like well I did too we're literally arguing when we all have done the same things you can't say I make all this money
Starting point is 00:07:55 when in reality the biggest pay things you ever had were tied directly to me we did it together. We did it together. We ain't doing it together right now. And I'll be honest with you. Yeah, I'm talking about you.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And I'm talking about you and I'm getting paid to talk about you. But I don't fight no more. Because all I can really do is talk. That's what I do. You fight or at least you're supposed to fight. So the opinions of John Jones have been all over the place. I believe, and this is one of the reasons Ariel and I had argued and stuff at times, I thought he was such a staunch supporter of John Jones.
Starting point is 00:08:40 I was like, man, you guys really kind of back him. And I'm like, I don't know about that, man. But he's a reporter. And he always did his job as down the middle as he could, even though him and I have a very good friendship. But the other day, Ariel said about Jones, he thinks with all of these tweets, he thinks he's having the greatest run on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:09:05 What's really happening is he's cooking his own legacy right now. He's making a mockery of his legacy. Show me a great champion. A great from Jordan, Brady, Lemieux, Ali, Gretzky. Show me someone who acted like this in their final chapter. Show me someone who refused to play it full. In terms of playing it forward, I think he means go and fight the next guy. And if you get past the next guy, then it's still your time.
Starting point is 00:09:37 But if you don't get past the next guy, as with every other thing in sports, there's always a moment where the new breed kind of comes in and they surpass the old breed. John Jones knows that better than anybody. He has surpassed the new breed and the old breed multiple times over the course of his career and his run as world champion. He's one of the greatest champions of all time. He's beating everybody. He went through the old guard,
Starting point is 00:10:06 meaning he went through Vitor, he went through Shogun, he went through Rampage. He literally put all those guys in the rearview mirror, and then he moved on, and he hit Rashad, and then he hit Gustafson, who was a new guy. Then he hit me, who was a new guy.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Then he hit Anthony Schmidt, who's an old guy, and Tiago Santos and Dominic Reyes. He hit him all. he put everybody back. Then he goes to heavyweight beat Cyril. Then he went and put the old guard back with Stepe. He's beaten all of them. He's been constantly pushing back that next wave of Challenger.
Starting point is 00:10:42 But there's one more wave. Because no matter how many times you've done it before, there's a real possibility that at some point it catches up to you. Nobody gets out of this thing clean. Habib did it. George St. Pierre had a fairy tale ending. But George St. still had moments where things didn't go great.
Starting point is 00:11:00 George CPA lost to Matt Serra. That sounds crazy, but it's hard to get through this thing clean. Jones has gotten through this thing clean longer than most people could ever imagine getting through this thing clean. But at the end of the day, there's another young up-and-coming guy that deserves, Tom deserves an opportunity to fight the greatest. If you're the greatest, you go fight him. That's how it works.
Starting point is 00:11:29 And you know what's crazy? Anderson Silva started to get beat by them young dudes on the way out, right? And maybe he stayed around too long. But if Anderson Silva would have walked away when Chris Wydenman got him, the world or Izzy got him, the world would have been much more forgiving. Because if you lose one, they're not going to judge you by that one. They're going to judge you by the 15 title defenses that you had before.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Now, if you go and lose to Tom, and then you go and lose to another guy, and you lose to another guy. Now it starts to mess with the legacy. I think this man's legacy is secure. He just has to go take the fight. It really is that simple. It's NBA finals time,
Starting point is 00:12:11 and the boy DC has fired up about getting it on the action at the Draft King Sportsbook. And so should you, because at Draft Kings, we're given all new customers an opportunity that if you only bet $5 or more, you will get $300 in bonus bets instantly.
Starting point is 00:12:27 But the original bet has to hit. Sign up using my promo code DCTV and bet only $5 or more and get $300 in bonus bets instantly when the original bet hits. One of the best times of the year. The NBA finals are upon us. So go to the draft king's sports book. Bet only $5 or more and get $300 in bonus bets instantly when that original bet hits. Starting point is 00:13:36 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally. calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas.
Starting point is 00:14:11 And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Highlights are trending, opinions are flying, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the plays, the controversies, and the stories behind the headlines.
Starting point is 00:15:14 We go straight to the source, the athlete themselves. Their locker room stories, their reactions, the stuff nobody gets to hear. The laughs, the drama, the triumphs, the moments that never make the highlight real. From viral moments to historic games, from buzzer beaters to controversial calls, we break it down, give you context and ask the questions everybody wants answered. SportsSlice brings you closer to the action with stories told by the people who live them. Listen to SportsSlice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Slices Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:15:48 The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jenchian win. I mean, she went down to three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface. Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this, your court side. seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHart Women's Sports. So Dana White lately and Ben Ascran, my guy who's going through a lot right now, and I'm going to
Starting point is 00:16:42 talk about him at the end of the episode, always talked about, I don't know why Dana loves John so much. He's been so positive about him. but when asked about it last weekend he said he hadn't really heard what was going on and then he was told that John said he'll vacate the title before he gets stripped and he was like wait what and he said this he said he's ready to vacate the title that's fucking crazy
Starting point is 00:17:13 I've been busy I haven't been keeping up with the gossip he either comes back today or he's coming back today from Thailand and we're going to talk tonight or Tuesday we'll get this figured out. If a guy wants to walk away, he can walk away. I didn't want Khabib to go, da-da-da-da-da.
Starting point is 00:17:35 But he also went on to say that John Jones accepted the fight. There was a wild number that we heard a while back. 30 million is what John wanted. John said, I'm not fighting him unless I get 30 million. When Dana says John accepted the fight,
Starting point is 00:17:53 well, he must have got pretty close, if not that number. But if he accepted the fight And then the fight's not happening What did he pull out of the fight? Did he not do the deal? Those are questions that I have. And all the while, Tom Aspinall sitting.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Tom Aspenol sitting and waiting Even though he's so frustrated That he just wants to fight anybody at this point And he said he will fight anybody at this point. He said he's frustrating. He was trained with Patty Pimlet the other day And he's almost kind of mocking everything And he said, everybody's got a time limit
Starting point is 00:18:29 and he's reached it. Now we're moving on. It's all in the past. We're moving forward. Everything's good and we can be fighting again. It's better now because I do know what's going on in a bit and I'm going to fight soon. So that's nice.
Starting point is 00:18:42 But for the last six months, I've kind of not known what's going on. Money, fame, titles, rankings, all that aside. I just love fighting, is what Tom Aspenall said. I like fighting people and that's what I got into it for. I didn't get into it for. I didn't get into it to fight and do anything else.
Starting point is 00:19:02 All of the other stuff is just nice to have on top. I just want to fight. And that's been taking away from me for over a year. But we're nearly over it now, which is good. Tom Aspinall seems just content with whatever happens, even if it's not a fight that he's been waiting a long time for. I don't know why they didn't fight before. John Jones looked like a world beating at a fight against Stipe.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Steve, it didn't look like himself. He looked like a guy that hadn't fought in a long time and he was 42 years old. But he looked like a world being. And if that guy shows up to fight Tom Aspinall, he can beat anybody. When John Jones beat me that second time, I was really good.
Starting point is 00:19:45 I was good. I don't know if I've ever been better than when I went into that fight, Nantan. And he finished me. So I know how good this dude is. But all this other stuff that's going on around the fight, I mean, you're talking about me, you're talking about Francis, you're talking about chale,
Starting point is 00:20:03 you're talking about all these things and almost ignoring the right thing. The right thing is to go fight this kid. And if you beat him, which is a real thing and a real likely scenario, you can then stick it to everybody like you've done on so many different occasions and tell him about it.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Nothing feels better to a guy like John Jones to be able to beat the guy that you thought was going to get him, and then I'm going, what did I say to you? It's sweeter than any title or anything else you can give this man. But he's got to be willing to take that chance
Starting point is 00:20:41 to go and fight this dude. Hey, could Tom Aspinall put him out? Absolutely. Tom Aspinall could put him out. He could shut his lights out. Because guess what? You can hit John Jones. He can be hit, but he's tough.
Starting point is 00:20:57 And he has a great chin. He can be hit, and if he gets hit by that dude, a big guy like that who's fast, Tom could put him out right away. That's a real possibility. But there's also a possibility that Jones takes him deep into a fight
Starting point is 00:21:13 that he's never in a place where he's never been before where Jones has lived. Jones has lived in those places and he could drown Tom Aspinon. But we'll never know if this dude don't just fight or quit. Or quit.
Starting point is 00:21:31 That's the truth. not everybody gets to retire. John Jones will get to retire from fighting. But if he doesn't fight this guy, then that's just him quitting. There's one real fight for him, and he's not so old and washed up that he can't take it.
Starting point is 00:21:50 So that's how I feel about that. We fought them all. I can tell you guys on good authority, if I was still fighting today, and I was still the heavyweight champion, and Tom Aspinall was the number one contender, I would have already fought him. 1,000%.
Starting point is 00:22:08 The mindset that I carried through my fight career, knowing how dangerous, it would have done nothing but excite me to see someone standing across the octagon that could potentially beat me or knock my ass out. That would have made me train harder, smarter, and be more prepared than I ever could have been. That's what that would have done to me.
Starting point is 00:22:31 What is doing to John Jones is very disturbing and it's very hard for me to understand because in my mind, this guy's a fighter because I've seen him do it time and time again. I don't know. It's a very, very, uh, it's a very weird situation going on with this Jones name. But I just wish that he would understand that we are doing a job
Starting point is 00:22:53 and it's a very, very lucrative job. Hey, hey, John, I'm in demand and it feels good. Right now you got a whole bunch of people turning on you and you are not making it any better with your actions. Guys, Ben Ascran, our good friend from Funkin and the Champ, is having a hard time. So that night that we did the episode of Funkin and Champ, the last one, Ben was complaining about some issues.
Starting point is 00:23:26 He had some infections. He had a really tough time when he went to that convention in Vegas. He was stuck there for a while. I want to report to you guys that he is now back home of Wisconsin. He's with his family, his beautiful wife, Amy, and everybody's just kind of playing that Ben gets better and we can start moving forward with life for Ben. It's so sad. And I don't know how at times in life, things like this happen to someone that's so good because Ben Ashken's a good guy. So pray for Amy guys.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Pray for the kids. Ben, we love you, buddy. And we're constantly thinking about him every single day. And I cannot wait for the next Funkin' the champ. Because we're going to talk about that and so much more. And we get so much of Ben in the way that we all love Ben. And you guys know how much we love Ben. So pray for Ben.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Shoot his wife, Amy Ascran, one. A heart. maybe some prayer in hands on socials and let her know that Ben has a community of people that love him and care about him and that we're all thinking about him in this tough time. All right. Hey, guys, thank you so much for tuning in. I appreciate your support and your viewership. I'll never take it for granted.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Until next time, like and subscribe, tell your friends to tell their friends that D.C.'s got a YouTube channel. And every week, we are letting out content like this on D.C. TV. Until next time, peace. Hey guys, it's us The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast?
