Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

All right, guys.
I'm here with the American Nightmare Cody Rhodes.
Cody, thank you for checking in with me.
I appreciate it, my man.
As you are getting ready for SummerSlam,
talk to me about the emotions going through your mind right now
as you get ready for such a big event.
I think any time you have the stadium shows
in terms of one of the big four classic WWE pay-per-viewsummer slam,
it's always an honor to be on them
and to be a headline fixture with them.
Yeah.
But it's, there's a new sense that's kind of come over me.
And it's where I've looked at Brock,
Brock Lesnar has an unbelievable SummerSlam track record.
And it's like it just, people just started popping off like he did this.
He wrestled the rock.
He wrestled this guy.
He wrestled Roman.
And he's kind of a Mr. Somerslam type.
So I wasn't thinking that at all.
all of a sudden it's got in the back of my head.
I'm like, oh, man, I hope I'm not a victim of Mr. Somerslam.
But I look forward to it very much to my wife and her family is from Detroit and Fort Fields, a special place.
So it's definitely, definitely looking to be a good day.
And Detroit's one of those great American cities that's on the bounceback.
Because for a while, Detroit was bad, man.
It's nice now.
I was there a couple years ago for the end of the internet.
AA Russell tournament and it's getting real nice.
I, uh, where'd they, where'd they hold the, the NCAAs?
Was it at Little Caesars that arena?
Yeah, it was that Little Cesar's arena.
It's nice down there now.
Yeah.
Um, my, my wife's family, they live in Can, Michigan and, and, you know, her, her dad
had worked for Ford still works for Ford.
It's good, it's good to see that because you can't have an, uh, you can't really have
Americana without Detroit.
Yeah, you can't.
Detroit's a big part of it all.
It's always sad when you go to those great cities in the country and they're kind of like run down.
It's horrible.
Anyways, you look at Brock Lesnar and you listed some of the people that he's competed against at SummerSlam.
Do you ever sit back, Cody, and think like, wow, I've come a long way, right, to be in this type of program with this guy at SummerSlam.
Like, coming back in this second run in the WWE, you are as the lead of a performer as there is.
and now you're sharing the stage with the biggest names in the game,
and I expect you to win.
I mean, I'm not, I like Brock,
but I'm not going to sit here and pretend.
I think you need to go out there and get it done.
I don't care if he's Mr. SummerSlam.
You got to beat the dude, Cody.
You do.
Well, that's the big secret when you get the big one at the big one,
is you have to win.
Yeah, that's the big, you know, having left WrestleMania with a loss,
you don't get the opportunity to keep what I would say,
the fans trust forever.
There's a certain point when they say, all right, all right, we're going to get behind
them even more.
But then there's another level where it's like, I don't know, man, you know, just that
natural disappointment.
So you got to go in thinking it's a must win with Brock Wilson.
It has to be one of those must wins.
And then you mentioned that I absolutely have little moments, private moments here,
where I can think of, oh, wow, we've come a long way.
but I feel like it's counterproductive
for when you're in there with a Brock Lesnar
for when you're in there with a Roman reins
the whole point is oh they're
there are two guys who have been pulling the wagon
you got to appear to be of the same
you know the classical
you're getting the rub from these guys
no you got to feel like they're getting the rub from you
even if it's
even if there's a level of delusion or whatnot
just because obviously
Brock Lesnar has a
Hall of Fame track record in
WWE. Got it. Great.
But I still need to beat Brock Lesnar and
SummerSlan. It's something I'd love to talk
about, you know, when it's
all said and done and he's a full-time
rancher or whatever it is he's going to do
where I could say just how amazing it was
and how much of a fan I was and how much
in all of his presence you can be.
But in those moments, you've got to stand
just as tall. It's kind of how I feel.
You got to stand just as tall.
Absolutely.
And then I mean, and also, man, this dude, Brock Lesnar just be popping up from everywhere just attacking you.
Brock Lesnar for as big as he is is the master of the sneak attack.
You would think that you would see him coming.
But this dude, he just sneaks up everywhere.
I feel like, and I'm going to talk about this on Monday Night Raw, but I feel like that's been an area where I thought, hey, maybe I'm pretty good.
Maybe I am pretty good because a guy who never needs to sneak up on anybody has snuck up on me.
every time.
And I want to mention it,
but I find myself sometimes overly
sharing how great Brock is in the ring.
I want to mention as far as
because he's got the drop on me
twice, full-blown drop.
I want to mention just how smart the guy is
in a sense that you have those
like super villain type thinkers,
your likes of type thinkers
that just like where your superhero
have their plan A, B, C, some of the most,
some of the most notorious villains have their plan A, B, C, D.
And I think Barack people forget.
Yeah, he could just go out there and mow over folks,
but he's been a lot more strategic with me,
which has made this really unique when I look back
at how things have been with him and I.
I got him once.
I got the drop once.
But we'll see.
You got him in Puerto Rico.
Yeah, I got up there, yeah.
Which was one of the craziest crowds I've ever seen.
I've never seen a crowd of people more.
excited for an event than you guys out there.
You spoke about the rub, Cody.
One of the things that you did in AEW,
you were elevating a lot of younger talent,
but you were an executive there.
Do you feel like that's as important in the WWER?
Do you feel like now it's about you finishing the story, right?
And finishing the story first.
I see you in there with Dom Mysterio,
but it isn't as much as you were with the guys over in
with MJF and the other guys, you know, it doesn't seem as though the executive Cody Rhodes
would be putting over everybody. But right now it seems like it's about your story.
I am not afraid to tell you. I am, I'm thinking all me, all the time. Yeah. And I joke with some
other, some of my other peers about there are guys who are, you know, they'll hit you with,
oh, I'm trying to help you and this will be good for you. And then you're, when you hear it, you're like,
I feel like this is about you, right?
And if I'm the one on the receiving end of that conversation,
I kind of just want the truth.
Just say, hey, and that's how I've become.
And this is something that in my documentary I talked about,
it's by no means will it ever be important to her.
But one of the things about having my daughter was,
I lost my sense of BS.
Yeah.
I lost my sense of BS.
It just became, hey, I think I'm pretty good.
I'm better.
I want to be better.
And then how much longer do we all have on the clock, right?
Yeah.
You feel like it's never going to end and it will end at some point.
So in this moment, I'm not doing any of the things that I felt like that was what I was meant to do then.
And now I feel no problem saying, not I'm about myself right at this moment.
I'm about getting it done for me.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraging.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I say.
Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions,
my journey from basketball to college football,
or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way,
this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement
to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations
with some of your favorite athletes, creators,
and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
One week, I'll take you behind the scenes
of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment,
and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music.
The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because,
of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
You know, it happens fast.
I can recall the first day I walked into a gym to fight.
And then 10 years later, everything was done.
It's like it happened so quick.
You know, I remember you as a young, young boy starting to WWE.
So now you are the man who you are today.
And it means a lot.
You know, storytelling is so important in your profession.
It's about, and I believe that you guys have done a tremendous job of getting fans,
invested in Cody Rhodes.
But when I watched you at
WrestleMania, I was right behind your family
and the only
person in there was happy that you lost
was my nephew, because he was a massive
bloodline fan to the point that he
cried on 91 when the Uso's
lost their championship. Oh, no.
He cried. His dad was like,
please let Roman Reyes. Wentz
off to console my kid again. He's like a nine-year-old
boy. Yeah.
That was the, but
you always spoke about finishing the story.
right and it felt like on that night it wasn't complete but then it left me to think is the story
about beating roman and winning that championship or does the world heavyweight championship fit
that goal that goal sorry and put an into cody rog's story or does it have to be that one
so with the original one i had come back and said hey i wanted to go for the w w championship
or the undisputed w tv championship it was specifically that title because it's a lindian
was tied to the championship that my dad had touched but not actually won in a
1977 with superstar Billy Graham.
I can say that that is the you know when people say finishing the story that for me is what
I came back to do and that I I also put it out there.
I verbalized it.
When you put your goal out there, you're driven to make it happen no matter what.
You've got to press sin on it.
I'm driven more to make it happen.
post-Rustlemania,
it is become about Roman, right?
Had it not,
had WrestleMania not gone down the way it did,
I would have felt winning the WWUndisputed Universal Championship,
winning this championship,
that's finishing the story.
To me, there's a whole new layer to the story.
And I've been very almost reserved in saying this
because I'm not near Roman right now.
Roman's got something else going on.
And I've got Brock Lesnar,
which is by all means,
quite a card to pull.
But it is about Roman,
because the way it went down,
how it was done,
I feel like it's,
just for me,
I can't let it linger.
I got to at least take another crack at it.
I can't let it linger.
One of the most unique, surreal experiences
being in that arena or in that stadium
when it was over.
And just,
I remember trying to make eye contact
with as many people as I could to let them know it's going to be okay.
Or it's going to like, it's not okay, but it's going to be okay.
Hardest walk I've ever taken.
Whether you look at this from a straight entertainment, sport, somewhere in the middle,
that was just as real and uncomfortable as a moment you could ever have.
But you got to get up.
Yeah, you got it's the only way, right?
You don't know any way is to get up and keep fighting.
and you've lost nothing in it.
I have one more question for you before I let you go.
Vorto, I met your father at TNA Russell
when I made the Olympic team.
They once let us walk down the thing
and he was so kind with his time, man.
And he spent an hour with me talking stories
because I had a lot of questions as a kid that grew up in the South.
I just wanted to talk to him and he was so generous.
Honestly, you carry a lot of the same characteristics.
I know we had our little fighting on Twitter, you and I.
But if I knew who you are, that would have never happened, man.
You are a phenomenal man.
And I'm glad you that you got that time with him.
He had a separate in his mind, you know, at like the timeline split and gone a different way.
He wanted to be a USA wrestling dad so bad.
He was so into everything that was happening, you know, like.
And I was in Georgia where the competition wasn't great.
So when we go to like Fargo or any of these.
I just came back from Fargo.
I was there last week.
I had two national champions.
See, it's, he, it was a world he never knew about.
And by the time he was getting really into it,
is when I was moving on into pro wrestling at that point.
But gosh, he just, he probably got a huge, huge kick out of talking to you.
He's also, my dad had a sense of real.
My dad had a sense of real.
If you were real, he knew it.
He knew it.
And I had, had all the time in the world for you.
He was a phenomenal man.
Cody, before I let you go, champ, I got one question for you.
back in 2016 you took a massive chance on yourself i've always been a big i've been a big supporter
of a man that says i know my worth i'm willing to go and fight for that i've done that on a number
of occasions in my career but there are people now that are maybe in the same position that you
were at that time would your advice be to those people how do you reinvent yourself how do you go
about making and turning the page because i can say this to you
directly. I don't know if Cody Rhodes is the Cody Rhodes today if you did not make that move to
go and do what you did. What is your advice to the people that may be in that position right now and
you say, I want to be Cody today, even though you are in an economical champion from Cody back then.
I just had a conversation like this yesterday with somebody asking for advice. And what I told them
was don't make a rash decision, but you have to make a decision. You can't.
linger. Don't listen, don't do knee jerk, flip out Jerry McGuire. But you still have to, if the next
day you feel the same way, don't justify incompetence, don't justify a bad deal, make a decision.
And if that decision costs you money, the whole point of it is to get it somewhere on the back end.
Just, just you have to move. What happens is I feel like wrestlers get stuck. Oh, and this is a big thing
pro wrestlers do. Hey, if nothing's changed by WrestleMania.
I'm, hey man, if you give yourself that goal three years in a row, you're, you're already a few years behind. Make a decision. Make a decision you'll be happier for it. You'll be happy trying new things out. And in my case, it worked out. So I can tell you that you can find your way back. Don't think you can't find your way back. You are a tremendous performer. You are a tremendous man, dude. Like I seriously do appreciate who you are. I appreciate you coming on this show.
show and checking in with me.
You are the first professional
Russell to do a D.C. check-in.
I don't do D.C. check-ins with people
outside of fighting. I did it with Cody
Rhodes. You are the man.
I'm honored. Is there a check-in?
Is there a check-in? Like a follow-up to the check-in
after the check-in? Yeah, maybe we'll
do that. Hey, real quick. We have to, man.
We have to. Guys,
you can catch the American nightmare
Cody Rhodes this Saturday
on Peacock as he takes on
the beast. Brock Lesnar,
A, is going to be physical.
It's going to be, I love, I love Cody how you have matched the physicality of anyone you are in there with.
And I love a hard charging match that you guys are going to have this Saturday from Detroit Rock City.
Cody Rhodes, thank you again for joining me, man.
I appreciate you.
Good luck and everything you do, my friend.
And I can't wait to see you soon down the line.
Thank you, sir, very much.
You have a good one.
