This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

What up, guys?
Welcome to a brand new episode of Funkin and the champ.
I'm Daniel Cormier that's been asking.
What's up, Ben?
I'm doing good.
Get ready for 4th of July.
America's birthday.
We're going to celebrate.
Do some fireworks.
Do some fun things.
Well, I heard that you got like a really busy day.
Like, I mean, I do.
That's the life of Ben Ascran every day?
Well, you know what?
I actually thought I got through my busy stretch, a lot of traveling, a lot of wrestling, you know.
And then my wife just, she throws these surprise social engagements on me, which whatever, I'm sure we're going to have a good time.
I just didn't know about it, you know, to like yesterday afternoon.
Hey, so like wrestling wise, boy, Jim Ascran won the national wrestling duels.
Well, Team Wisconsin.
It was your team, essentially.
It was your team.
Look, I love how generous you are with the praise of the entire state.
Yes.
But it was the Aspen Wrestling Academy.
I mean, y'all wrestled.
Good, bro.
Congratulations.
Yeah, I appreciate it.
That was a big thing for us.
That was something we were trying to do for a long time.
We brought in all the big troops and we got it done.
It was great.
You know what I think is the most amazing thing is how you get your seniors when they're done?
You still compete.
That's massive, man.
And how many people do that?
No, I mean, we have a good relationship with them.
And they know we've done a lot for them.
And we say, hey, come do this one thing.
And we'll also have a really good time.
And they were into it.
Yeah, that's awesome, man.
Congratulations.
Like, that's not something you expect from Wisconsin.
But, well, I guess now you do.
Now we are.
But you guys, like Wisconsin has a state.
Eh.
Ha, ha, ha.
Daniel, someday you can move here and avoid that 17% state federal tax.
Wisconsin State income tax.
You said state federal tax.
State income.
For a smart guy, you had, hey, you and Michael Chandler are both guys that are smart and went to Missouri.
But boy, sometimes y'all do some dumb shit.
I mean, I don't understand.
Or say some dumb shit.
Anyhow, man, are you into, because you know Louise, you know Louise, boy, Louis.
Let me tell you something.
You've never met a bigger point.
Poetan fan in Louise. I mean, this
Really? No, I didn't know that.
Oh, God. Bro, he is the fucking
president of the Alex Pereira
fan club. Poetan this, Poetanin'
that, Poetan this. So am I going to
show up one day for this podcast and he's
going to have the face paint on?
Bro, he is literally
the biggest front runner you've ever met.
He's all, you know who my two favorite fighters
are? I'm like who, Louise? Oh,
Poetan and Islam. I mean, come on.
That's hard. That's hard, right, Ben? Anyhow.
That's funny.
Yes.
Boatan and Coach Plinyo were talking after the knockout,
and they saw him, I'm talking about your pro-haskol on social media,
doing something and said, I'm going to head kick him.
Ben, does it work like that?
I mean, does it work like that 15 minutes before if I,
you see something on the internet that you can just implement it?
Or does it feel like to you, this is something that he might have been working on and doing,
and it showed itself so he took advantage.
because Louise is all in.
Louise believes that this just happened on a whim.
I'm not so sold, if I'm being honest.
I'm not, so I would say I'm in the middle somewhere
because I have had instances like that before
where I saw someone do something and wrestling, not in fighting.
But I said, oh, we can take advantage of that, right, as a coach and say, oh.
But Ben, 15 minutes before you went out there to wrestle.
Well, so the other difference is, you know, with me coaching all my guys
and the other high school kids, I've never seen them before, right?
So it would be the first time I see them and I'll say, oh, there's, there, there's that thing.
You know, like, whereas Yuri is like, he's probably watched a lot of his film.
He's already fought him before.
He's, you know, he's been training for this fight.
And so it's like, I feel like there's probably already some things he was picking up on.
And maybe that was just like a quick reminder of like, oh, yeah, that's going to be open.
And, you know, at the day, there was a lot of other things working for him also.
Like, there was a lot of things working for him.
So that wasn't the only thing working for him.
He did.
He did everything right in that fight.
I mean, Yuri had no moment.
It's really odd how you have a fight between two fighters that have already fought,
and the fight looks completely different.
The first time, Uri had moments he had takedowns.
He was able to take him down and hold him down.
He was able to strike with him.
This time, I don't even know.
Did you ever land a significant strike?
Do you recall him landing a significant strike?
Well, you know significant strike?
I always hate that it's called the significant strike because on the scorecard,
it's anything that is not a jab
as a significant strike,
which doesn't feel right at all.
There's a jab not hurt.
Well,
sometimes a jab hurt
and sometimes,
you know,
an uppercut misses
or hit you in,
you know,
up here doesn't hurt.
So,
yeah,
I mean,
it feels like a weird
terminology for significant strike.
You know,
I get in trouble
for that a lot,
a lot,
where I get mad
about the takedown.
I get mad about the takedown
because I don't agree
with the terminology,
but he gets mad.
at me about that. Because that Matt return is
considered a takedown. That is
one. And also
a takedown doesn't count
unless you hold him there for a second.
Correct. Yes.
But if I pick you up and I throw you to the
ground, that's a takedown. You and I
both know that. They do? They count
that in the UFC? No, they don't.
That's why I get mad.
I'm like, well, that's a takedown. So
when Kobe Covington and Kamarro Uzman
and he hit that double leg, he runs
Usman down to his hip. And then Usman
turns and stands up.
I think that's a take down.
They said it's not a take down.
Oh, I don't know.
So, I mean, I actually kind of a little bit of agree with them because like in mixed martial
arts, I don't think a takedown should count.
Like, you know the thing I hate so much.
And I don't know if it's Joe Rogan or Anna that's guilty of this.
But so they always say something like maybe you can get a takedown at the end of the
round to steal the round.
And it's like if you get a takedown with 10 seconds up, it shouldn't count.
Like it should count for nothing because you've done nothing with it.
that's that's me but that and I also
that you. No way.
I also say that when. I also say that when, shut up.
I also say that when.
Are you a broken record right now?
Huh?
Are you a broken record?
I also say that when, shut up.
When we're in a very even round
and the round is tit for tat
and it's 50-50
with 20 seconds left and someone
secures a takedown.
I feel like that separates them from their opponent.
Really?
And wins them the round.
Because there is no difference in the striking.
There is no difference in the damage.
There is no difference in some rounds.
So something has to differentiate the two.
That's the takedown.
Okay.
Yeah.
I feel like if someone gets a takedown and they do nothing with it,
it should have really,
if it's coming from a wrestler,
it should have very minimal value.
Like, I would rather someone take me down
and not punch me at all, then like, get a really hard leg kick even, for example.
Yeah, yeah, you're right.
But surely like a body kick or, you know, hard punch, I would much rather get taken
down and have them not punch me, then, you know, get one of those things happen.
Ben, is Alex Pereira living in a world where he's just benefiting from being there
at the right time?
Because you go back five years in this division, the top five.
is myself
wrestler
Jones
wrestler yes
Bader
wrestler yeah
Rumble Johnson was a wrestler
yep
Phil Davis was a wrestler
is he
is he benefiting from living
in the right time right now
because his top five is
Yuri striker
Jamal striker
Rockets striker
Ankelyev is a bit of a grappler
too, but he's mostly a striker.
Yeah, not grappling heavy.
Exactly.
Daniel, it's weird because, you know, one of the things that you would say about mixed martial arts
or that you generally thought, which now he is, I mean, he's going up there on like the
Alzheimer's list at this point.
Yes, he is.
And it's wild because one of the things you would have said previously is if someone is
so specific with one genre, they're going to fight someone who's going to have like,
you know, a rock, thing about rock paper, scissors.
right?
And they all beat each other.
You're going to fight someone who's different stylistically from you at some point.
But he's this far in.
I mean,
he's two belts in and many defenses in.
He still has a fought a really good wrestler.
And I don't think there is any.
Well,
it's weird.
I mean,
that would go to another point.
There was one, Ben,
in the top 10.
Well, let me ask you this.
Why are really good guys choosing not to wrestle at this point?
That one's weird to me because, you know, say 10 years ago,
ish, right?
There was all these high-level wrestlers coming in.
And now we don't see all that many high-level wrestlers
making the transition,
so you're not going to get them at the top of the division.
I would say, like, where are all the kids that,
where are all the people that wrestle that weigh 230 pounds?
Yeah, for real.
Like, seriously, because tell me the top 10.
I bet you can pull up the light, heavyweight top 10 right now in the UFC.
I will do it.
When you look at that and you look at the people there,
they don't, and they don't seem to have many matchups
that will cause him a ton of problems.
I bring this up because of this.
I don't know if he wants to.
I don't know how long he can run this type of string together
because everybody he fights will have to strike with him.
And when you strike with him, it is proven time and time again
that he knocks you out.
Yeah.
So if you don't have that ability.
Daniel, you look at 185 and 195.
There's not really a person in the top 10 in either division that is like you would,
you would say is a super high level wrestler and uses it a lot in mixed martial arts.
Yeah, and for weird, yeah, it's weird because they just don't exist in a heavyweight.
That's not really the case.
Blades shoes a lot of takedowns.
Aspinall can wrestle.
Almeida can wrestle and grapple.
Jones can wrestle.
Almeida can wrestle.
Yeah.
But at 85 and,
and at 205, it's thin.
Who's 205 top 10?
We got.
Alex, Yuri, Uncleyev.
No, no, start at 10.
In TV, you always get backwards.
Okay, sorry.
Anthony Smith.
Anthony Smith, who does think he could beat him.
I'm not certain about that.
He's not in the top 10 after last weekend.
Okay, well, he is, I'm on the website and he currently is.
He's number 10 after that fight he had last weekend.
I don't know.
they haven't updated. I'm not certain.
Okay. So Smith, Ozedimir,
Roundtree, Walker, Krilov,
Rek, Blakowitz,
Hale, Aklaev, Phraska.
I mean, I guess Jan Behovic can be considered
a guy that wrestling. He's not grappling heavy.
I'm just saying, though, when he fought each other,
he was able to take him down and control him.
Well, and so that's the thing that feels so weird
about, um,
uh, Pereira is you, like I said,
you kind of have to start putting him in an all-timer category
when he's won multiple belts, defended title.
but then you think about okay well Jan's not really good wrestler and took him down and kept him down the whole round right the whole round
Izzy who's not a wrestler took him down and kept him up for a same amount of time he can wrestle a little bit a little bit
and so you think like okay if he fights a really good wrestler this may be a problem for him but then you look at the rankings to
your point and you say but there are none are there any guys in that ranking that you would consider
favorite to beat him.
I mean, Uncle Ayiv odds,
he's a plus 130 dog against
Uncleayev.
Yeah.
I mean, I'm in for Unclelyev.
I, you know, I, and we've talked about it many times.
I,
I am kind of against the champ champ thing.
I loved it back in the day when George St.
Pierre and Anderson Silva,
when they fought everyone in the division,
they cleared out their divisions.
They beat everyone, right?
I'm all in for that.
So there's still some guys in here.
He hasn't fought.
and he's one of, it seems to be one of the only champions currently who wants to be really active.
He's very active.
Yeah, he's fighting frequently.
Ben, do you put him in Erronkhaliev as a promotion knowing the dangers of that fight whenever you have a guy in Pereira who is really a massive star?
Ben, he says chama.
He says chama.
Like, seriously, he says chama.
and people go crazy, dog.
I put a video of him.
I was doing that stupid walk that he does.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And at the end, he goes, Chama.
It's got like 80,000 likes, bro.
Oh, my God, so ridiculous.
It's crazy, bro.
So, hold on.
I do what you ask me a question.
I do put him in there.
Is there a part of you has a promotion where you go?
I kind of put him in there with somebody else.
Well, okay, so let's tell about us.
The UFC does, does.
and has, try to move people up the rungs faster.
You know, Sean O'Malley kind of a nice path.
Alex Pereira had a nice path to Adasanya.
They do do this.
But the one thing the UFC, to my knowledge, does not do.
It's protected.
It's protected.
And listen, they might give you a more favorable fight one time, right?
They might say, oh, let's jump this guy because this one's going to be big money or
whatever.
But they're not going to do it over the course of three or four or five fights.
They do not protect you.
Remember there's that famous Vince McMahon quote that,
he said about mixed martial arts,
which is funny,
he said,
they'll never make a billion dollars
because they can't control the outcomes,
right?
So they can't make the stars.
Star building,
star building.
But they've done it.
So I don't see any reason why they wouldn't change.
And they said they might pick a couple opponents,
but they're not going to protect him for a long time.
He's going to have to fight the best guys in the division or bump up.
And,
you know,
honestly,
Aspinol is a significantly tougher fight than any of his division.
For him,
it's so dangerous.
Aspen off him is so dangerous.
He's so big and he's so good at everything.
I don't know if that, hey,
but I tell you one thing Jones said now,
he might stick around because he goes,
the options are looking great.
And if I'm Jones, look, man,
if I'm Jones, I fight Stepe,
I beat Stepe,
and then I call out the UFC to make Pereira go up
knowing that you can take all that thunder
because Jones versus Pereira would be a massive,
uh,
a massive payday.
I still, listen, I love Alex Pereira, so it almost feels, I feel guilty saying this,
but it feels like that would be similar to Sebril Ghan.
Yes.
Gabriel Jones is a minus 800 favorite to fight Pereira and beat Pereira if they were to fight.
So it's just like not a great matchup, but I love Alex, man.
It couldn't have happened to a better guy than Pereira, his team, and knows people
because Chama is one of the coolest words.
I've ever heard about that's our life.
But John Jones is the, I mean, I don't know.
It's like I feel like, and this is me as a fan.
I feel like I get so sick of it.
And I have to assume other fans to those same way as me is like,
it just feels like he's constantly playing games.
I mean, he's fought one time, Cyril gone.
His fight before that, his fight before that was February of 2020.
We're talking four and a half years ago.
He's at a singular fight.
No, I know.
I know.
It's, yeah, he got hurt last time.
So you got to give them a little.
Yeah, but four and a half years.
How many times can you be hurt?
Yeah.
What's up, guys?

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you.
But just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, Ben, just before we move on real quick, because we,
We can't stay long today.
You have stuff.
I have stuff.
But, bro, bro, Yerip Rojka had convinced himself that, that Alex was doing.
I hate it.
I literally brought that up.
I do those videos for my bookie.
Man, if you start talking like that, that is a clear sign you're going to get your
ass kicked.
Like, if you're starting to worry about witchcraft, like, no, you're done.
You're not going to win.
I said it.
I said, listen, if people worry about witchcraft, this is.
going to be over quick. He's going to get knocked out.
And that will be what happened.
Ben, he walked up the stage after
Way ends. He goes,
I could see it in his eyes. He was
trying to do something.
He was like,
you're crazy.
No, seriously.
Whenever Alex's song was playing
and Yuri was in the middle of the octagon, he's literally
like pulling in
the energy and like putting it
inside of himself.
Oh my God.
Dude, when you get that, when you get that
far it's a little too far and yeah i said it i said it like i hate this hate the fact they
think about this and you think about that type of stuff man it's probably over for you it was awesome
dude oh my god i love yerry bro i love yoree so much he's the best all right ben israel adasania
and drake is duplex c yes are now scheduled for perth at ufc 305 i believe yesterday had a press
seeing that sign you faced off for the first time.
It was the first time we've seen them come together since that very
uncomfortable interaction inside the octagon.
Was that?
What?
Would you say when I said,
I said it was very uncomfortable.
Very.
Very uncomfortable.
Especially to like people who aren't black.
We're like,
this is crazy.
So anyhow, they come together.
how much do you think it bothered edisonia
because one of the reasons
they're so mad at each other
or is he so upset
south africa africa
you so eloquently
talked about the history
talked about the history and explained it to us
as to why a guy like edisonia would feel that
but then the first thing or one of the first things
shrickland uh not strickland
drakegger says is
it's very exciting for me.
Two African guys fighting for a world championship.
How mad do you think that made Eidosanya
or do you believe the fact that Eidasonia wasn't inebriated
it may not have bothered him as much as it did
whenever they were at that event.
Hmm.
No, I would say it bothered him for sure.
Just based on previous stuff.
Smart to do that?
Yeah, I think so.
I mean, that's kind of what Drake is
done to this point. I mean, you know, I said, I didn't
love some of the trash talking that Sean Strickland.
I thought it was a little boy's belt, but he did it
anyways, and it worked. So
I really don't see why he wouldn't continue
with that type of behavior.
Did you see what Sean Strickland said
today against Peyton Talbot?
No, what do you say?
Peyton Talbot is awesome, bro.
Yes. And Sean Strickland
wrote something like
like, no, Sean Strickland's out of his mind,
dude. He said, yes.
Do you see Sean Strickland fight that Marine?
I kind of want the backstory on it, but like,
did that guy, why do you want to get beat up so bad?
I don't know, man.
That was weird, right?
I don't know why fans do that.
The ones that just decide, I want to fight an M.MA fighter,
like, it's the dumbest thing in the world.
You're going to get beat up.
But anyhow, yeah, he made a very bad gay joke about Peyton Talbot.
I don't know what dude is was bad.
Sean Strickham posted it.
Like, Sean does stuff.
Sean does
Twitter.
It was either on Twitter
on X or I don't know
where it was.
I saw it was a picture.
It was bad.
Sean does whatever he wants.
It's so crazy.
Sean also was mad at Robert Whitaker.
Told Robert Whitaker
sit his ass in the back
because he should be the backup fighter.
But is this fight
is this fight between
Dracus and Izzy?
Does it mean as much as
Izzy?
No, no.
Let me, let me,
let me rephrase this.
By is he making it so important that it's the history of the entire country or the continent?
Yeah.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Is that unneeded pressure for Etaxania to put on himself?
Yeah, I would definitely say unneeded.
But some people, that's positive, right?
Some people, maybe not so good.
You know, they crack under that type of pressure.
So maybe Adasani has had a good.
guy where he feels like he needs to feel that pressure and needs to feel that type of emotion.
I don't know.
I think, uh, I don't think I ever see him like sway.
Like actually I would say with the Strickland fight where he lost, I think that was one
where he didn't kind of build it up too much, you know, where it was kind of like it almost
looked like he was taking it easy or, um, was under, was, uh, he was underwhelmed by Sean Strickland
so didn't come out to fight as hard as he maybe should have.
So maybe he needs that type of thing that to be more positive for him.
You think that's good for a guy that was honestly talking about being done until
2007.
That was weird.
That was so weird.
Right.
Yeah.
But he was like he wanted a break.
And now he's in the biggest fight that he can get.
Yes.
So why put the question?
Some of these guys,
I don't know if I don't know if you ever dealt this with your athletes, some of your
athletes, because those are people you know even closer than these fighters.
Some do just say some wild things.
And you have to be like, come on, man.
You don't really, that's dumb.
You don't really mean it.
You know, like, that's totally illogical.
Let me just talk to you for three minutes and tell you why that's illogical.
And then you talk to him and they're like, yeah, you're right.
I shouldn't have said that.
I shouldn't have done that.
You know, like so I feel like Adasania is that kind of guy.
So like when he said, I'm not fighting you know, 2027.
If you would have let me wager that, I would have wager all my Bitcoin on that.
That was not going to happen.
27.
Yeah, right.
Like, it was so ridiculous.
For real.
I would have.
I would have wanted so many Bitcoin on that.
I just think that he was frustrated, right?
Losing that fight to Sean Strickland.
And, bro, it's also hard, right?
Whenever he was the guy,
he gets beat by Sean Strickland,
who Pereira beat.
It's like, there's a whole thing.
Those guys will always be linked to each other.
And that has to be hard for a guy like Edassania.
But I love this fight.
I love that these two guys are going to settle to score.
You know what's crazy to me is Yuri's weird, right?
Yuri's weird.
But, and Yuri fights weird.
Yes.
But we have now seen Pereira able to just figure it out.
Yes.
Dracus is weird, but nobody can figure him out.
How does Drake's figured out yet?
How does he win with that style?
I mean, dude, that was, you know, it was, I was a doubter.
I saw the way he's moved and I said this is weird.
And I thought Robert Whitaker was going to beat him.
Then I thought Sean Shookling was going to beat him.
And he just continued to prove us wrong.
And so, you know, like when I watch them, I feel like Israel-Lessani should be able to beat him.
But given what has happened, it's like, oh, man, that's how I feel, but I would have a hard time making that bet.
I think Dracus actually takes our thoughts and he goes and he applies it to himself and he gets better.
I made fun of him in his wrestling
in one fight. I was like,
you don't do that. I was like, that makes no sense.
But then he comes back to the next fight
and he does something way better.
And it worked. It is like he fixed it.
It's like he fixed it from fight one
to the next fight because he wanted to prove
that he could do it. It was crazy, bro.
He's a good champion.
And I'm excited about that one in Perth.
And also, you actually got me an appearance.
So for the first time,
I feel like you're giving me something.
Whereas I'm usually always
giving you stuff in this relationship.
Man, they say hand come.
They say hand come, hand, go in relationships.
Unfortunately, it hasn't been that way for Ben Asking and I.
Hey, Ben, I know you got a real busy day, my brother.
Yes, sir.
Thank you for doing the podcast.
We always enjoy it.
Thank you for your time.
Guys, for Ben Askeran.
I'm Daniel Cormier.
Happy 4th of July, guys.
We'll catch you on the next one.
Peace.
Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy,
Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not.
not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
