This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

What's up, Funky, Ben?
I'm doing good. How are you?
Hey, bro, like you without a shirt now?
Well, I don't know if you, you and you're in California, you get a lot of the same temperatures.
I'm here in Wisconsin.
So it is cooling off significantly.
It's nice.
I can't really wear tank tops anymore.
I do love the fall, but your tank top season is probably over.
Dude, I saw a picture.
I don't know who I was talking to that.
They're like, yo, Ben Ascran.
I said, I know.
Did you see him?
Yo, why didn't you just do what you're doing now when you were fighting?
Because you can't take testosterone.
It's illegal.
Come on.
You think nobody takes testosterone?
No, I do.
I'm not a cheater.
You know, honestly, the biggest part of the cheating thing for me, Daniel is that...
All these guys take testosterone.
As a man, as a man, if I say, you and I are going to compete,
then I have said, we're going to compete on this rule set,
and I'm going to honor my word to you.
Even if you're a competitor I don't like, I'm still not going to cheat.
So that was kind of my thing.
You know what?
I'm getting more and more and more than nutrition,
and that's probably having an effect also.
I don't know why.
I've got to ask you.
I've got to add you.
Oh, shoot.
Seriously.
Oh, my God.
You're going to say something dumb.
I can already tell.
No, I know.
Okay.
So I was talking to somebody and they started doing testosterone.
Guy looks in phenomenal shape.
Yes.
But he said it makes you horny.
Be honest.
Does it make you turn back?
I was already there.
Huh? I was already there.
No, but it doesn't make you turn back to like a teen where you're like,
all you want to do is chase your wife?
That's what I do every day, all day.
All day.
come on because
I swear to God, she's already like,
leave me alone.
Leave me alone.
I'm like, come on.
And then you get on the testosterone and it's even worse.
She alleges that,
but I think I was pretty bad the person.
Dude,
I'm trying to tell you,
that's what the guy told me.
He goes,
it just makes me feel like I'm 15 again.
We're like,
I just chase my old lady around the house all day long.
Yeah.
I mean,
I kind of already felt like that a little bit.
But yeah, yeah,
I mean,
I've heard other people say that as well.
Nothing wrong with that.
It's a good time in the life.
It's a good time.
All right, Ben.
So, guys, welcome to a brand new episode of Funkin' the champ.
Sorry, Ben and I, as always, get a little off track.
And that was something I wanted to know because we're going to get you.
I don't know how long it gets to take me, Daniel.
Everybody's been telling me to do it.
I'm just kind of fearful.
No, we're going to get your testosterone and we're going to get you on a healthy diet.
I don't know how long it's going to take us.
We're going to get you there.
You know, listen, you competed for a long time.
At some point, you're really smart.
and you're going to say, yeah, this is what I want to do.
I don't know what it is, but it'll happen.
I just fear, man, I'm so, I'm so crazy.
It doesn't make any sense.
Hey, listen, so last week, or, right.
Wait, what did that have to do with what I said?
No, because I'm just crazy, bro, and I fear that.
I don't want to be what I was when I was younger.
I was so out of my mind.
I was out of my mind.
Like, obsessive you're talking about or what?
Testosterone.
I heard that on.
No, not testosterone, but also diet.
You're going to figure it out.
Diet.
You're going to you.
I promise.
Okay.
Okay, okay.
More years.
I will.
I will.
Not one year, six months.
Okay.
Let me take it.
Oh, Islam told me get on the diet.
Yeah.
I forget those guys.
Listen, we care about you, Daniel.
We care about you.
Maybe it's just because you entertain us.
We don't know.
But I want you to live longer.
I want you to be around here for a while.
I think I, I think right now I'm probably going to live to the right sweet age of 80.
That's it for me.
That's it for me.
What's it's it.
That's all you want.
The upper room for me.
Hey, but listen, Ben,
UFC 307 was last weekend.
And I think that our expectation for Salt Lake City
has gotten so great
that when we get a card like last weekend,
it didn't feel like it made you feel
when we left Salt Lake City all those other years.
What did you make of the card in general?
Like, it just kind of felt like it wasn't what it used to be
when you're there.
Well, I think I mean, I honestly feel like
said this on the show that it wasn't a super great card.
I thought it was good on paper.
It was, it was good.
I remember the one thing I said I was,
I said when I look at this card and I look at UFC 308,
I'm like, oh my God, UFC 308, that's going to be a lot of fun.
You know, there's the Megamettev guy who's really good and Goliath's really good.
Chimae of Whitaker's fun, hallway and Tupuria.
They did have gone and Volkov, right, which got taken out of that card.
Like, that card was stacked.
You have R.
Rafael Dosadios on the undercard.
So I think when we compare it to 308,
it was maybe not as great.
And then sometimes
you look at a card and say,
I'm not all that excited.
And then the fights are go nuts, right?
And then sometimes you're like,
oh, not all not all excited.
And then they end up being
not really great fights either.
That's what last weekend felt like.
Yeah.
You know,
but what are you,
Alex Pereira is becoming like easily
the greatest star mixed martial arts.
Yes.
But last weekend,
he was hurt.
going in to the point that he didn't know that he would even compete.
How much more to respect does that make you have for the champion?
Yeah, it's great.
I think he's fought five times in the last 16 months.
He's defending that about three times in seven months.
Three times in seven months.
I think it was five fights in the last 16 months, which is, you know,
compared to the other champions, it's just incredibly active.
You know, looking at someone like John Jones one time in four years.
other fighters have been
where they don't fight frequently.
He just fights all the time
which is kind of what you.
You don't like John Jones.
You really don't like John Jones.
You don't want to say it,
but you don't like John Joe.
You know what?
I don't like.
Okay, so I would say
especially John's early career,
absolutely the greatest small time status.
But I,
because we've talked about so many times
the show, I'm annoyed that he's not fighting time
of aspiral.
I think it's so stupid.
I can't believe data's allowing it.
Steve hasn't fought in four years either.
It's just a.
really weird thing that I can't get over.
Yes, okay?
Back to Pereira, though.
He's super super super super,
which is making him a superstar.
Other champions should probably take note of that.
And I think, yeah, I think it builds up stories.
You think about Michael Jordan,
you know, the most, the famous flu game.
Oh, okay, so stop.
What?
Stop it right now.
You said Michael Jordan.
Let me ask you this now.
Dude, I swear to guy, you guys paint me into this way
where it almost makes me feel like I'm hating on Pereira.
You don't like Michael Jordan?
What I love Pereira?
Huh?
You don't like Michael Jordan?
I love Michael Jordan.
But I'm saying like somebody Oussman said that to me the other day that John Jones is the Michael Jordan of MMA.
And now you're making this comparison.
Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben.
What?
Okay.
He had, he, there was sub-part conditions.
He had a short training camp.
He had an injury and he decided to compete anyways and he found a way to get it done.
And I think that's the mark of a champion.
And that was talking about the flu game.
Yeah, yeah, the flu game.
You're talking about the flu game.
In one singular instance, he was like Michael Jordan.
Well, yeah, yeah.
I mean, but that is, if you think about like there's a lot of athletes that have almost
career-defining moments when there's some type of injury, hardship, or adversity that
they have to deal with in order to get over.
And, you know, in fighting, the really weird thing that happens in fighting a lot is we don't
actually see this because you can just delay your fight.
If you're the champ, if you're the champion, you say, ah, hey, give me a month.
Give me six weeks.
Yep, yep, yep.
the NBA finals is the NBA finals.
The Super Bowl is a Super Bowl.
Like when those things are going to happen, they're going to happen.
You can't just say, hey, no, you mean four more weeks.
So we don't always see fighters deal with adversity and hardship.
And so it's great when, you know, Alex pops in there, even when he's maybe not 100%.
I heard he was hurt very bad.
I already heard he's hurt very bad going into that fight.
And he went to Utah not knowing if he was going to fight.
But let me ask you this.
And light heavyweight used to be the hard.
home of the
wrestler. I want you to put
in your computer right now.
UFC
light heavyweight rankings
2007. We talked about this. There's none of them.
At middleweight too.
How? How is that even possible?
A lot of the best wrestlers stop fighting.
Hey, you know who's a good wrestler? Who's going to be
a good fighter? I want to give you the
Florida to get pumped up here.
Jacoby Smith.
Ben. Are you stupid?
What? Ben.
he is managed by Zinkin
I know I'm telling you
don't give him some juice right now
I'm the one that
yeah he's the man
I know he's from Oklahoma State
I'm giving you in Florida
did you see his natural skills the other day
he's good
because he uh
his buddy Tristan Moran always told me
that he was uh
was he a boxer when he was a kid too
or something like he did something like that
where he's got hands too
he's so good he's gonna be really good
he reminds me of a lot of those guys
that are real good
but Ben, there are no wrestling.
I think that Pereira at some point
is going to have to beat one of those guys
to submit himself as one of the grace of all time.
Because at the end of the day right now,
he's still just kickboxing everybody he's fighting.
But that's a fight is a fight.
And so he, you know, it's Alex can't control
who gets to the top of the ranking.
You're right.
That's not his thing.
He, listen, he's one of the guys.
You can absolutely cannot accuse him a cherry pick.
And he's the one that he showed up five times
in 16 months.
Nobody else does that.
once they get the title.
So it's just a weird thing and it just happens.
And yes, I think you think and I think you're probably right that he is maybe vulnerable
against a really good wrestler.
And, you know, so like, you know, when he's considering this, Tom Aspinall or John Jones
and maybe.
That's the problem with Aspinall.
He's a big kid that can wrestle.
And John Jones also, right?
John Jones is really high level wrestler, grappler.
And so if, you know, but maybe if you want to have been challenged one of those guys,
maybe that's the thing that would make him like a goat.
Like I think he's already.
I think he's already okay in the conversation.
Hell, bro, you know that in the last seven months,
he tied the record with me for most light heavyweight title defenses in modern UFC history.
Really?
Three.
He's definitive three times already.
It's like John Jones with all those defenses, me and Alex.
Oh, as number two, John was first.
Yes, John was number one.
Of course, John has like 12 defenses.
Well, I thought maybe he like got busted.
And he was like, maybe he got two
and they got Bob.
So he came back and got two more or something to that effect.
I don't know.
You're so funny, dude.
Ben, Ben.
Well, I don't memorize.
I can't memorize his career.
I know he got popped multiple times and got stripped of the belt.
I know that much.
What?
These are just facts.
These are facts.
Okay.
Hey, Ben.
UFC 307 was great.
But like you said, 308 seems to be the one that is on the tip of everybody's tongue.
one of the guys in the main event
Elliot to pour you
has got beef with everybody right now
Ilya to pour you
went from being the guy that told everybody
he was really really good
to becoming the champion
in tremendous fashion
to now
he's getting talked about by Sean O'Malley
part about me
and the O'Malley equation of this whole thing
is I don't know
if Sean knew what he was trying to
to say when he was tweeting this.
He wrote, Ilya's going to be the next
Cody Garbrandt. He had his little Dominic
Creas performance. He's about to get
pieced up by Max Holloway and go
downhill from there.
Then, then, then,
right? That's him insulting him. Keep reading. Keep reading.
That's him insulting him. And then he goes
from there. Not really.
I feel like Ilya is one of the most skilled guys
actually in the UFC. But fuck
Ili. So did he insults it?
That's so weird.
It's so weird.
You know what I thought?
I thought there has been significant ties between marijuana usage and schizophrenia.
So I thought maybe we're seeing multiple personalities with Sean within one tweet, which is really impressive.
You know, because some guys, I actually unfortunately know a few kids who have been affected this way where they kind of got schizophrenia.
And I'm guessing it was from marijuana usage.
But like they'll act one way one day.
That's not true.
Yes, it is.
Absolutely.
Look it up.
Really?
Teenage marijuana usage.
It doesn't seem to affect people as much as they get older, but absolutely.
I think Alex Berenson maybe wrote a book on it or something.
For sure, though, I know some kids.
I can't prove it, but I suspect that has had an effect.
But O'Malley had multiple personalities in that one text.
It was really weird.
I don't know.
I don't know what he was trying to do there.
What?
What's wrong with you?
You don't like my marijuana given to the first?
is the truth, bro.
Like, are you insulted this guy
trying to pick a fight?
Are you complimenting him?
Like, it was the craziest.
That's one of the craziest tweets I've ever seen, bro.
He went and said, he was like, Tony Garbrane.
He's going all the way downhill.
It's done.
And then he calls him one of the most skilled guys
in the UFC.
Doesn't really make sense.
It just, I'm just, the whole time I was like,
make it make sense, Sean.
Like, just make it make sense.
I don't know.
Did he ever clarify that?
Because that was weird.
And then I don't think
The sad thing is like
I don't think like
The grounds that he had
For picking a fight with Ilya
All
Revolved around him holding that belt
Not that he doesn't have that belt
Huh?
No it doesn't make any sense
Right
It's very rare do you have a guy
Whose
Popularity and options
Are directly tied to the belt
It's
It was like
that with Sean because I find myself feeling like that.
Where it's like,
yeah, he just got,
he's got beat up.
We don't,
we don't need to see him bump up the next way class when he's got beat up
at his way class.
Yeah,
it just feels like,
I feel like I want to know what Sean O'Malley's doing still because I do
believe he's still viable inside the UFC.
Yeah.
And he's relevant.
But I don't have that need where I'm like,
I wonder how he would do against Max Holloway or how he would do it.
Well,
I think he should fight Sanhagen next.
That's been for Paul.
That would be a great fight.
That's a great fight. And it doesn't have more by getting taken out.
Yes, exactly. They're going to stand and trade.
It's going to make a fight. And then obviously you go Umar and Marab and then boom.
Yeah. Winner versus winner.
But that's not the only one. All right. So Sean O'Malley had that tweet about Iliatea
Tepore. Yes. But then Ilya Teporea and Islamah had tweets.
Now this one, Ben, felt a little bit more. It felt personal and like these guys might like a
real beef. It said, Islam says, if Teporia keeps acting like that, it may finish badly for him.
Something might happen. I haven't seen him cross any lines just yet. He needs to focus on his weight
class and defend his belt. I'll then respond. I don't need to cross lines, but it would seem like
the kids that hang out with you will try to cross a line that they can't come back from. Let's
leave the kids out of it and settle it like adults inside the octagon in 2025.
that does this hey this doesn't feel like a sports
uh
bickering this feels like they're almost saying
something you know outside the octagon
I was just thinking about this and then I looked it up
and I'm correcting this is Tuporia is Georgian
and kind of where he's from
and if you look at a map it's like neighbors
and you know like say Missouri and Kansas
have a rivalry in college sports
Oklahoma and Texas probably
and like where he's at in Georgia is
literally right next to where
Islam and those guys are from. Like, it's very
close. Really?
Yeah, Georgia is right next to
Vladikovka and Mahatjkla and
Mahatjkla and on that area. It's close to
so it's close to Dagestan. I didn't know that.
I didn't know that. Right next. Yeah, I know
why I got friends like you who are like really smart.
That's one thing you don't get credit for.
Bro, you do what? People don't give you credit for how
smart you are. Like you know a lot of random
shit.
So much random shit.
Yeah.
They're touching.
So maybe that's why I was, you know,
I was a geography major in college.
Oh, really?
Yes.
So you didn't major in sociology like everybody else?
I mean, I guess I had the same thought process of like,
hey, I'm going to do something in wrestling,
so I'm going to pick something that's like relatively easy
and I enjoy it a little bit.
So that was, you know, so I did that.
All right, guys, so it's October.
And the weather's starting to cool.
And nothing's better than grabbing your favorite date
and going to do something fun.
you put your little jacket on, your whole hands,
you walk, maybe drink a coffee.

Imagine an Olympics where doping
is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say
it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman
documented it all, embedded
in the games and with the athletes for a
full year. Within probably
10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping
the muscle growth.

I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions,

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark,
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth,
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.
a good person. Join me,

Do you like whenever these fight beefs are more real like this
or does it kind of worry because it felt like Mazvedal and Covington
was more than just fight beef?
And it was. He punched him at the steakhouse.
Absolutely.
right?
If Armand Sourkeyan and Bobby Green
weren't even fighting each other
and got into a fight at the hotel.
Yes.
I love it. I love it.
And that's why you know the thing
I hate more than anyone.
Chale goes off on this also.
And I bet you hate it
because you're a wrestler and us wrestlers
we're real. If we don't like someone, we don't like someone.
I can't stand it
when people are like, I hate your guts, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
And after the fight, they hug each other.
And you're like, wait.
Oh, my God.
This is bull crap.
You guys are supposed to hate each other.
You guys are not supposed to hug right now.
This is crap.
Do you remember Muhammad Mokyev in a, in a,
Oh, that was, oh, God.
That's like the worst example ever.
So bad.
Why?
Oh, my gosh.
Fawn at the P.I.
Manel told me, you know, Manel goes, I beat him so bad, D.C.
Oh, my God.
He came and he tell me this, this.
He goes, I slap him.
D.C., he shot on me.
I beat him so bad in the bathroom, D.C.
It is.
It is.
They get into the fight, and they don't fight.
They don't fight.
It was so crazy.
And then they hugged.
How could it be so bad that security followed you the whole week?
I don't know.
That's a fight.
You didn't fight.
I posted that one meme that's really popular.
And both of them got mad at me.
You know the one where the two like mean dogs are, they're going, and then the, and the fence
pulls back.
And then they just start looking at each other.
They don't do nothing.
Like, that was, like, what are doing?
So that, that is something we hate more than anything else.
So yes, I love it when it's real.
I love it when they actually want to fight each other.
Khabib Kahner would be a great example of, you know.
That was good, though.
It was great.
It was freaking awesome.
They just fought.
They just fought each other.
And then he wanted to kill him afterwards still.
Yes, it's when you know it's still.
That's when you knew it was real.
So real.
But these guys seem to be like threatening each other at our, and that's, it's, it's, it don't
give you the path.
I'll give you the path.
I love beef.
I just don't love, I don't love that.
when they start saying stuff like, I don't know.
Because I guess it's just the unknown of their cultures.
Yeah.
That makes me go, man, who are these guys tied to that they would say this dude may never come back?
Right?
Like that because I don't know the culture well enough.
I think that's a little, maybe, you know, maybe, who knows?
But I think it's great.
I love that Tupouria is planting that seed because I think that, you know, Tuporia has a title fight coming up very soon.
Why is he doing that, though, when he's got the most dangerous guy.
Max Hollow in front of you. I'm going to tell you.
Because if he beats Holloway, then he's got
Lopez, who's got a pretty good following
right now, who's got the popularity. He goes
and beats him up, and then he's defended the title
a few times, and then he says, now
I'm calling for a super fight, and they've already
he's already got the seeds planted over here.
It's not he's got to recreate it. He already
has Islam, and they're going back and forth.
I kind of like, I kind
like when they plant the seeds. You saw what Juliana
did last weekend? Yes.
They put Kayla Harrison on the screen
and she called out Amanda Nunes.
Yeah, do you think she, well, Amanda Nunez has just pointed out, had a video, um, out that maybe she was going to come back.
To fight Julianna?
Uh, I believe that's the video.
No, no, no.
I saw the video just come out.
Yeah.
I saw that video, but I didn't know what to make of it.
It was when she was, uh, she was doing something in front of her house or something like that.
Yeah, Amanda Nunes?
It was looking out.
Why?
Let me see.
Let's see.
I, uh, Louvies is sent it to us.
Oh.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
She was going to fight?
Yeah.
So, I mean, I think if I was a man, New Year's,
she could definitely come back, you know, beat Kayla Harrison.
Because otherwise, Kayla Harrison's going to get the belt shot.
Yeah, so she's saying right here, she wants to fight.
I can't believe you won't look for me.
I've suffered too much beyond what I deserve.
Yeah.
What is she doing dancing?
She's dancing of some sort.
Dana Whiteley's call.
I miss you so much.
Yeah, she's dancing.
Yeah.
You, she's, I mean,
I don't get this video.
I'm turning it off.
I can't watch this shit, man.
You go, Payne or versus,
I'm sorry, Pennington versus Nunez.
Pennington.
They fought already.
Oh, shoot.
It's Peña.
They fought twice, but Peña won.
Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm sorry.
I don't know, man.
I just worry, like, I like when it's,
like, it's in the street like that.
I don't want to why they get really hurt.
I always, you know what I kind of wonder?
I hope that I'm with you the first time you see George Mazzvedo.
Oh, he's going to hit you.
He's going to hit you so bad. He's going to hit you so bad.
Good. I've been telling him, and this is the weird thing about fighting.
We talked about Mavel Kopp and Mokaiov.
It's like there's not really any rules when you get in the cage.
You got 15 minutes to pretty much do whatever you want.
We have a few rules here.
You can't, you know, can't grab their nuts.
Can't eye gouge them.
But besides that, you can try to kill him as bad as you want.
And so it's like you have 15 minutes to do that.
And they kind of stare at each other.
So like, do you really want to beat this guy up or don't you?
Just let us know.
Yeah, you want to beat him up.
I always felt like when I wanted to fight someone,
honestly, you didn't have no choice.
Once you're in there, you got to fight.
Otherwise, they're going to kill you.
When you fight the best guys in the world?
Yeah.
But then sometimes, that was a Bobby Douglas quote.
Is Bobby Douglas still around?
Yeah, he's alive.
Okay, I love Bob.
Did you not know that?
I haven't seen him forever.
I haven't seen that guy.
He's great.
Anyways, he had this one saying
where he went two dudes
stood and stared at each other
in wrestling, of course.
Bobby was a fight coach.
Although, did you know Bobby Douglas
cornered me for my third fight?
Wait, what?
How?
Yes, because I didn't take a coach
because I, listen, I just,
I booked myself a fight.
I don't need a coach
to beat this guy up.
And I saw Bobby Douglas,
I said, hey, Bobby,
get in my corner.
You didn't have to get it
cleared or anything?
No, it was in it was in Des Moines, Iowa
and you know, he was at Ames.
Yeah, Bob was my corner from their fight.
Ah, no, but he would say,
he would say one guy is scared shitless of the other guy
and the other guy is so happy that he's scared of him
because he's actually more scared of him.
Like that they're both scared,
so they don't do nothing to each other.
Well, I would be so scared that I would just fight.
Like, honestly, I wasn't fighting because I was brave.
I was most times just throwing because I was terrified inside the octagon.
Ben,
it's crazy.
All right, Ben,
time for Funky's corner.
What you got for us this week?
Oh,
I got a lesson in economics,
actually is what I was thinking.
I'm curious what you think about it because I feel both ways about it.
As a fighter,
it is annoying to see fighters not get paid all that much.
Now,
they are making way more than they used to.
But at the same time,
the thing I go back to is economics, supply and demand.
And there are so many,
males in America.
And I do say males specifically.
They're not as many female fighters.
There are so many males in America who would die for the shot to fight on national TV
for 12 and 12 or whatever the UFC minimum is.
And so if you have this immense supply of men who are willing to fight and you know what?
On the undercard on the small fights, they are kind of a commodity.
It just usually need two dudes fighting who are relatively skilled who aren't bombs.
Okay.
That's all you need.
It's a little bit of a commodity.
So you have all these guys.
the supply is too large, it's way more than demand can meet. And now on the spectator side,
you know, we've had other leagues, whether it be PFL, Bellator, one championship, they're all
struggling. They're all struggling to gain approval, which, and honestly, people are saying,
you have too many fights. So what that's saying to me is that there's not enough demand for more
fights. And so there's not enough demand from a consumption side and there's too much supply from
people who want to do its side, the pay is always unfortunate.
going to stay kind of low.
Yes. Absolutely.
Absolutely.
It sucks a little bit, but it's true.
It's absolutely the truth.
Because here's the deal.
The NBA is a monster.
But the one place you can find
the best players in the world
is in the NBA.
The NBA does not exist
without the best players in the world.
Hey, there are 100 leagues around the world,
but they never can hold a can.
to what the NBA is.
So the best come and play here.
And the other thing there, Daniel,
the other thing in professional sports
that other people neglect here is,
is the Dallas Mavericks are fighting the Golden State Warriors
for athletes because they know if their team wins.
So while you may only have one league,
you have 30 teams which are competing for good players
to make their teams better because the franchise values are really, really high.
There's one place in fighting.
There's one place.
Yeah.
Because guess what?
there's only one place that honestly man
not even trying to be like a UFC guy
there's one place where you reach
superstar there's one place where you fight
the best in the world there's one place where you
maximize your visibility and
earnings inside the octagon
and outside the octagon and it is
the UFC and
every other organization tries
and then eventually
it starts to falter and I don't understand
why the only one
that has found success to Scott Coker
he's the only guy
that has found sustained success.
Yeah, I think if you go far enough back,
obviously if you go far and back,
pride was really big for a while.
Like there was a few others,
but yet now it's like,
UFC is,
it's more of a monopoly than it's ever been.
And no other,
you know,
it continues.
The gap widened.
The gap widens every time.
Every year it widens and not even by like a little bit.
It widens by double.
Every time.
Every time.
And Dana was talking about this the other day.
Every time the PFL,
uses that Kayla Harrison lost to promote someone on another card
that just tells you that they're just throwing shit at the wall
hoping something sticks and go, oh, well, the hope is that,
oh, this girl beat Kayla Harrison.
She just fought in the UFC.
But to get to, let's watch this girl.
Well, Kayla Harrison's one of the best in the UFC.
So they go, oh, UFC, light bulb, go watch UFC.
They never get to the product that you're trying to sell
because you're constantly pushing UFC
c to them that you beat him.
Francis Gano was about the headline of pay-per-view.
Former UFC champion.
He was the UFC champion, right?
That's, that is, it's always going to be an issue.
Ben, yeah, I like that one.
That was a good funcus corner.
I like that.
That was a good one, Ben.
And it does suck.
And so you know what I tell all these young males,
man, if you want to have some fun, you can fight in a cage.
But if you want a real job, this is a shitty job.
Do not, you an MMA fighter when you grow up.
But is that true?
Yes, 100%.
money because we made money that we would never have made any world.
We are in the point 0.01, you know, 0.2% or something.
It's like a release.
But still, Ben, you never even learned to fight.
You just learned to, you just wrestle with buddy.
We're going to talk shit now.
I'm just being honest, Ben, you just literally, remember that one time I said, Ben, why didn't
you like, like, why haven't you?
I go, dude, you made it to a world title fight.
You never learned strike.
And you were like, I didn't really need to.
Why would I?
Yeah.
I mean, listen, well, we're not going, we're not getting into the bash Ben session,
but the fast.
No, it's not a bashed session.
I'm just telling the truth.
Okay, so if you said, you said, average male, I would say, hell no, don't everybody
a fighter.
If you were going to tell me elite level wrestler, I'd say, well, you know, unless you're starting
on third base.
Yeah, you're right.
You know, if you want to get the home employee, at least you're starting on third base.
You're right.
You're absolutely right.
That far to go.
You're absolutely right.
You're talking about the wrestler.
You're talking about the average man in the country.
Yeah, don't find.
Yeah.
Dude comes up to you at the freaking Starbucks on the corner there in Gilroy and says, hey, I
I want to be when I go up.
And then they fight it.
I'm like, man.
Hell no.
Don't do this, man.
He's going to get your ass kicked, dog.
All right, Ben.
Thank you, mate.
Always awesome doing the show, bro.

It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
