Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:00:24 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? Eligibility and deposit restrictions do apply. Listen. So Mike and I are in this YouTube game together. This is our first collab video. We've never done one together before.
Starting point is 00:03:52 But I figured we needed to talk because. you're a guy like this is what they say in the streets they say this in the streets you're out their head first right you're not you're out their head first you're not protecting your face
Starting point is 00:04:07 you said one yes that's what you're like this hit me in the face so anyways still got it Mike who is one of the greatest commentators in the world
Starting point is 00:04:19 one of the best minds in mixed martial arts goes on record and says some things that I stand by And so last night I called him because I saw he said that Tom Aspinall who, again, I really do think highly of him, moves around the octagon like Muhammad Ali. You said that. I thought, okay, that's a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:41 He said this whenever DC and RC. Well, then he doubles down. It's like enough hours in the day having passed before he doubles down. It says he's going to make it look easy this weekend. he's going to beat John Jones and he's going to retire as the greatest heavy weight of all time. So I call him because I got to know. He called me.
Starting point is 00:05:02 And what did I say? Mike, is this a gimmick? What are we doing? Or am I just hyping the fight? I said, what are we doing? I go, Mike, is this a gimmick? Are we hyping? You were doing one of the thing as well. Tell me. Sneaky research. He's going to use all this on commentary.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Of course I will. Of course I will. But I'm just saying, though, because for me, I respect your opinion. So when you make such grandiose, like, like, claims, I tap in. So I'm like, I asked you, I said, Mike, as a friend, I go, what are we doing here? Is this real? And you
Starting point is 00:05:31 told me you stand by this. I do. I do. And listen, I understand, because as we said on the phone last night, it is a bold claim. Bull. Sergei Pavlovich is a tough mother effort. And I'm not overlooking him. And I actually feel like I'm being a little disrespectful. But it's not, it's not, it's a thought.
Starting point is 00:05:48 That is not what I'm trying to do. I spoke to Sergei today. What a sweet heart of a man. He's a great guy. And I'm a monster inside. the octagon and they both six and one they both have the fastest and the second fastest finish time they're both very capable yeah but when I look at
Starting point is 00:06:01 Tom Aspinot and the way that he beats people the movement that he has and the ability to fight everywhere I think he can pick and choose his poison and I honestly think he's gonna jab in and out jab in and then so you think Tom's gonna wrestle
Starting point is 00:06:17 oh yeah I think so Sergei was a greco woman wrestle himself but Mike here's here's another thing I asked Bisbee I said, Mike, have you seen something in the training room? Because I remember before, when Islamahadchev was coming up, we made big claims about Islam. He's going to be the champ, he's going to be this. But it was all the things we saw in the room that we didn't see him put into action of the octagon. But then you said there are a lot of highly respected people that you talk to in England that see him day to day that make you feel confident knowing that this dude has it.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Yeah, yeah, but when you look at March in Tibera, granted, Andre Olofsky, okay, listen to you, Andrew. Andre's a legend, but he's past his pride. When you look at all the people that he's fought and beat, and even the Curtis Blades won, that wasn't a loss. But, Mike, they fought with 30 seconds. He went like that, and he fell over. Mike said, Mike, you're with Mike, they fall for 30 seconds. But he fell over.
Starting point is 00:07:10 He hurt his own leg. That wasn't a loss. I know, Mike, but you get, Mike, you cannot just say, God, this is so bad because it's going to make it seem like I'm not talking about. I'm not talking about the performance. I'm saying you can't. You can't count that as a loss.
Starting point is 00:07:26 But guess what, though? In all that, Sergey Pallovich actually beat Curtis Blades. Yeah, I know. Because he didn't blow his leg out. So you think that he was going to beat Curtis Blades if that fight went on? Well, don't throw me under a bus. No, I'm not trying to throw you under the bus because I'm trying to say, if you say or retire at the greatest of the greatest ever wait of all time,
Starting point is 00:07:45 if you say he's going to retire as a great, that means it can beat everybody. Here's what I think. I think. Because listen, we're proud, guys. Because now you're like, now you gotta feel like I'm paying you into a quarter. No, no, no. Here's what I think. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Because listen, we all know. Everyone says obviously makes everything about himself, right? You're the same. If we can get it in there, we were the champ. We're in the Hall of Fame, right? We get it in there, of course. We're still trying to relive our glory. We worked fucking hard for this.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Yeah. Right? So when I say top good goal down as the greatest heavy rate of all time, that to you, your hackles got me. You know what's sad? And you're like, this motherfucker's in. Let me tell you what's crazy about that. And this, I want you to pan it on me here, cameras.
Starting point is 00:08:27 If Tom Aspinall is the greatest heavyweight champion of all time, that would also mean, or if it even comes close to being the greatest of all time, that would also mean he's the greatest English fighter of all time. And right now, stop, stop. That would mean he's the greatest English fighter of all time. And right now, every time people ask, who's the greatest English fighter of all time? It's very easy. It's very easy.
Starting point is 00:08:53 But if Tom does that, he's being the greatest. No, yeah, you would not be okay. Guess what? I created the territory. I opened the door. I teed it up. I can knock it out the park. I don't have a country.
Starting point is 00:09:07 No. So I wouldn't know what it feels like to be the greatest in the country, even though I do. But I don't want to be the second best fighter from Louisiana. No. I want to be the greatest. You want to be the second best fighter in English history? There can only be one. And right now that's you.
Starting point is 00:09:20 But right now you're the greatest. We've got Leon. Leon's not the greatest though. Leon's a great fighter. The greatest English fighter of all time is Michael Bisbing. That is 100% true. You heard it. I always say that.
Starting point is 00:09:31 I always say it because his impact on the sport, winning the ultimate fighter. Soon as Usada got there became the UFC champion. All those things make him to me the greatest mixed martial artist in English history. But if he does all those things, that means that he would surpass you. And that's fine by me because it's not about me. I had my time. and it's all moved on and I'm proud of my babies.
Starting point is 00:09:52 I raised them right. I've raised them. Right, let's get down to this. Okay, you believe this. Now, I know you can't. I think he's great. I'm not picking the fight. You can't pick the fight.
Starting point is 00:10:01 But I think he's great. I think he's great. So how about this? How about this? I'll create a scenario where you're not picking, but you kind of R-ish. I'm not going to pick the fight.
Starting point is 00:10:12 I'm so good at this. No, no, no. I'll say, Sir, Tom Aspinno wins. I'm right. and you're wrong. And the loser of this has to do a YouTube video
Starting point is 00:10:24 shirtless, top of. Belly on display. I'm not, because I don't know who's going to win the fight. I think it's that competitive. I just don't know how, for as great as he is, I don't know how, I just don't know how for as great as Tom is, and I do believe he's great. I believe that he's the next version of what heavyweight fighting looks like.
Starting point is 00:10:45 But when you got a guy that's won six in a row in the first round, in the first round, how do you think that he's not like going to... So if you were Tom, because you are an incorrect fight, I said. Yeah, yeah. What would the strategy be for you? Honestly, exactly what you're talking about. Move on the outside, pop him with the jab, make the big man attack and extend the fight. Because the last time we saw him in an extended fight was who?
Starting point is 00:11:11 Overee and Overeign beat him. So it's like, extend the fight. If you're Tom Aspinall, you got to extend the fight, you got to pop at him. You got to kind of be the net, right? You got all like when you're outside and you're running, it's like, and you're like, and you're like, kind of like, get this shit off of me. That's what Tom has to be.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Who's around Dominic Cruz? Yeah, that's your boy. You're Dominic Cruz. I don't know how you guys have a fault. But like, bro, pop it. Boom, boom, move. Make him chase you, frustrate him. And then when you frustrate him, hit him with a shot,
Starting point is 00:11:42 or you hit your shot, get out of range. Because we know he has power too. But you got to extend the fight. And on the flip side, to Sergei Pavlovich, say if that's the cage, cut him off, back him up.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Isn't that one of the biggest mistakes that these kids make? When a guy's moving, like when I'm moving, right, if I'm the kid that's moving, if I'm Tom, and you're trying to cut me, they follow.
Starting point is 00:12:02 And then they make a circle over and over and over. So if you're Pavlovich, it's this. He's big, right? If I'm circles, I got here. I cut him off.
Starting point is 00:12:10 If I got here, I cut him off. And every time I cut him off, I take a step forward. Look, I'm just kind of getting closer. This is what I'm trying to do. Yes. But he wasn't mirroring me.
Starting point is 00:12:19 And then I'm closer. Then I'm, that's what Sergey has to do. Get closer. And then whoever wins, honestly, is the heavyweight champion in the world. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'll say.

So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:14:14 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:14:35 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:50 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? D.C. here. Working out is full of positive. You sleep better. You look better. If you tell me that John Jones and Steve M. Eotches are still going to fight for the heavyweight championship, but both are going to probably retire after this, then we're looking at the undisputed heavyweight champ because at some point,
Starting point is 00:16:58 they will have to crown that guy and elevate that guy because you can't have that person defending the interim championship. No, no, no, for sure, but hold on. Maybe we do see that because think about it. If John Jones is going to be out for a year. And Steve A's waiting on it. That's a year from now. These guys are going to want to be active.
Starting point is 00:17:14 They're going to want to fight this. Let's just imagine John wins, just for the sake of it. But that's a year from now. That's a year from now. John doesn't fight, what, every six months? It's what, lucky. It puts on what, 18 months? So these guys are going to win the interim championship
Starting point is 00:17:27 and then sit on the best years of their career. That's what I'm telling you. This is the heavyweight champ. This fight determines the heavyweight champion in the world because so do you think whoever wins this will defend the interim title whilst that fight lingers? That's definitely what they're doing because I think you have to save meotches versus Jones, which I don't think even needs to be a title fight. It's such a great fight.
Starting point is 00:17:52 It doesn't really need a belt. But I think these guys will have to fight. It's crazy because I was doing a show something with Chell today and Chell goes, this is an interim title, but it's not for the number one contender because if everything we know is true, Steve B is still the number one contender. So it's like it's a fight for a belt that they will defend but only defend as the lineal heavyweight champion,
Starting point is 00:18:17 as the universal heavyweight champion, undisputed heavyweight champion award. What do you think of all these people? And by the way, I think it's ridiculous, saying that Jones should have been stripped. So here's my thought. It's a year from now, right? If this is it, your last fight,
Starting point is 00:18:33 there has to be some sort of decision. Because think about this, if it's a year from when he got injured, and he fought in March, it'll be 18 months outside of the octagon. Yep. It'll be 18 months outside of the octagon. So there is a case. And it's not getting younger. There is a case where you can strip him,
Starting point is 00:18:49 but to not strip him and save the Fiamio Miot is okay too. Flip side, devil's avocado. Greatest of all time. Yeah, heavyweight comes up, heavyweight champ. People, when they get injured, they're giving that kind of leave. way they bring him interim titles. That's kind of what they're designed for. So if you can do that with other people,
Starting point is 00:19:10 for one of a better expression, lesser champions, and I don't mean that in any kind of disrespectful way, but this is John Jones. If you can do it for other people, then why can't you do that for John Jones? No, but you can do it for Jones. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:21 You can do it for Jones. That's why there's no right or wrong in this situation. If you take the belt from him, nobody will bat an eyelid because if you bring him back and you put him in Stepe for whatever championship they want to call it, It's going to be okay.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Because the fight really does sell itself. That's one of those ones where you don't really need a belt. But in terms of keeping the division going forward, Pavlovich will fight as often as Pavlovich gets an opportunity to fight. So Tom Aspenov, he's not injured. Those guys will want to fight again before Steep A. Jones fight. Which is, again, it's so weird to me because you're going to have two actual heavyweight champions. because if Jones and Steeper
Starting point is 00:20:03 are only fighting each other, they're only fighting each other. Every other heavyweight should not have to just kind of sit around and twiddle their thumbs because they don't know what they're fighting for. Because you got great guys in the division that want to fight for the belt. Cyril Gond won again.
Starting point is 00:20:20 That Cyril Gond fought since he fought Jones, no? No. He hasn't. Hold on. He did right. Just be Sergei Smith. Right. He fought.
Starting point is 00:20:26 He fought again. So it's like, this dude's like, hey, I want to start working my way back. because while I did lose to Francis and I did lose to Jones, I have not lost to Tom Aspinall. I have not lost to Sergey Pavlovich. I haven't lost to these dudes. So I still want my opportunity. So why should the division stay forward?
Starting point is 00:20:44 And guess what? When that time comes, the UFC will have to go, maybe we do make these dudes fight. Because again, Jones ain't back till next year, probably in the summer. Miotra should be almost 42 years old at the time. It's crazy, man. Like the division right now is fun, but we need, I'm telling you right now, we all have to grasp the idea that on Saturday night, the heavyweight champion will be crowned. I know it's called interim, but the heavyweight champion will be. And I believe, and this is not a competition and we're not talking about your day or Steepay or Jones.
Starting point is 00:21:18 Let's just take them out of the conversation right now because the power of them, I think Jones and Steepenpe, they're really at the tail end of their careers. Maybe they have one fight. Maybe they have two. They both said that they have. Yeah, they both said they're pretty much done. I think whoever wins this. Well, first of all, I think Tom and Sergey are the two front runners. I think it will be another rivalry, much like,
Starting point is 00:21:37 maybe not as heated as you and John Jones, but in terms of skill for skill, how good they are. It won't be as personal, but I think it'll be them two because there, I think, leaps and bounds above the rest of the division. You don't think that, um, uh, uh, Curtis Blades? Gone is not right there? Oh, no. Zero.
Starting point is 00:21:55 But the take down defense is a problem, right? The take down defense is a problem, right? Sorry, Cyril. Totally forgot about Ciro. The take down the fence is a bit of a problem. But the take down the fence is a bit of a problem. It is an issue. Because those guys will try to exploit that.
Starting point is 00:22:05 Why don't you get Cyril out to W. Okay. Bro, I've tried. I've asked him. But the guy, I mean, he's a former interim champ. He's one of the best in the world. He's proven to be able to compete with everybody. No, but I'm glad you mentioned you because that's disrespectful to Cil.
Starting point is 00:22:17 No, I think those guys, I think those guys are good. But then you start getting into the, you know, in Gialton. Is Jolton going to just sit and wait? Like, Jioelton? Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, these guys are all so good. It's like, we have two guys. And if, like he said, Steve it will be at 42, John will be about 36.
Starting point is 00:22:37 And 36 is not old in fighting. But when you live the life that Jones has lived, it's a little bit older, right? And those guys both are saying that they're about done, then I think you have to move on with these young, active, fucking tremendous fighters. I mean, Jayotan is amazing. Gone is this good. Obviously he has a glaring hole. Paul, Pavlovich is amazing. Aspinol is amazing.
Starting point is 00:23:03 And all those, that quad, that four can make for some real interesting fights. Let's wrap it on this. He called me last night to give me abuse. He called me last night to ask me last night to see if I'm happy. I'm telling you right now to your face, Tom Asper, and I'm a fan of Sergey. I like Tom, man. Tom Aspinall is going to breeze through this. But I will say after you caught me last night, I started thinking, oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:23:25 You know, you know. You don't go out there like that, though. You don't, like, that's the thing. Like, because for me, it's like, learn behavior from the people that my peers. I know what your behaviors are. So for you to go that, I was like, wow. Maybe I'm too close to the situation.
Starting point is 00:23:41 You know what I mean? But I do think he's going to stick your move. You're going to float like a butterfly. Sting like DC. That's it. We're out of it. Hey, man. Like and subscribe to both of our shit, man.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Let's go. Please do. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guide. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
