Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The volume. All right, what's up, NBA fans? So I'm going to start with this. I'm home on a Saturday, which is not all that common. So I get to sit back and watch fighting as a fan. And today I watched,
Starting point is 00:03:58 What is, honestly, one of the most courageous and greatest performances I have seen by an athlete outside of the realm of expertise. I watch Francis and Ganoo fight the lineal heavyweight champion in the world to a split decision. Guys, make no mistake about it. Now, I will tell you this, and I believe this with 100% of myself, everything I hold to be true in my life. Francis Gano is the baddest man on the planet 100%, 100%, 1,000% and we always call the heavyweight champ the baddest man on the planet
Starting point is 00:04:38 and it's usually the MMA guy that is the baddest man on the planet. That's why when Tyson Fury started to call John Jones out and everything, I was saying how he could not beat John Jones in an actual fight. Francis Gano proved tonight that he is the baddest man on the planet. Why? Why? Because he was the heavyweight champion of the UFC.
Starting point is 00:04:58 And tonight he fought the lineal heavyweight champion in a world to a split decision. Tyson Fury could not fight Francis and Ghanu in mixed martial arts in the way that Francis fought Tyson in boxing. There's no way a fight between any boxer and the UFC heavyweight champion in mixed martial arts goes to that type of decision. It was the most impressive performance I've ever seen for a guy outside of their realm of expertise. Because they can't do it. Francis was out there composed early. He dropped Dyson Fury with a beautiful left hook. And then he was competitive late, which is not something I expected.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Because if we know Francis at times as those fights guys, out longer, especially the steep amyotia's first fight. He got a little fatig and I thought that cost him. He was in shape. He was ready and he did an unbelievable job of fighting the best boxing the world. We have seen multiple, multiple high-level professional boxers not be able to do with Francis and God who did tonight against Tyson Fury. I got some notes because I try to keep my mind when all this stuff is popping in.
Starting point is 00:06:20 I'm sitting on my couch going, I got to write somebody shit down. First thing I wrote is greatest crossover performance I've ever seen. We lauded Connor McGregor for going the amount of rounds at Floyd Mayweather that he did. But make no mistake about it, those were not competitive rounds. This fight today, those are competitive rounds. And many of those rounds, Francis could have won. I had to fight 95-94 for Tyson Fury. just to make sure
Starting point is 00:06:55 that I'm not yelling robbery I'm not saying Francis won Francis won by just standing to the final bell I was on Manix's podcast yesterday and I said hey we're getting them but did I really believe it? No but we as mixed martial arts fans we will back our guy regardless that's just what we do
Starting point is 00:07:17 10 rounds against the best box in the world unreal This is his pro debut. Francis and God who has no boxing matches. Francis and God who has no prior experience fighting with 10-ounce gloves
Starting point is 00:07:35 inside of a boxing ring. We're not even talking about just making your pro debut. Guys, most boxers make their pro debut in a little assembly hall somewhere. What about 100 people fighting a guy that can barely stand up straight to knock him out? They pad record.
Starting point is 00:07:52 in boxing. But I believe that Francis obviously is the UFC champion or was the UFC champion. So his name lends itself to being in there. But the way that he performed showed that he's wise behind his years. The amount of people and the stars that he had to fight in front of, the pressures that were put on him inside the ring tonight, impossible to not allow for that to become an issue for you, especially when you've never done it before. You're in front of Ronaldo, Eminem, Kanye West, all kinds of boxing legends, former heavyweight champions, Mike Tyson's your trainer. It was a spectacle.
Starting point is 00:08:32 It was a spectacle. But he not only stood up, he actually over-delivered one round, one round. Dude lost by one round, because he won the last round. He won the 10th. He lost the 9th. So what I had it was two point round for Inganu in the second when he dropped Tyson Fury. Then I had Tyson kind of pulling away from him. Francis fought his way back into the fight in those later rounds.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Put round after round together one like two or three in a row. And then he lost the ninth, one to ten. I thought Tyson Fury won that fight 95, 94. We all thought that by leaving the UFC and the guaranteed amount of money he was going to make Tyson, Francis Ngano was making a mistake. When he got this fight, you kind of had to eat crow. Now he has gone not only into that fight, but he's over-delivered in that fight.
Starting point is 00:09:25 So now there's a world of opportunity still out there for Francis and Ghana. So what does he do next? What does he do next? Does he actually go to PFL? When right now, he could go out there and fight some of the other great heavyweights around the world. He could go fight Deonté Wilder and nobody would bat an eyelid.
Starting point is 00:09:46 nobody he can go fight some of those guys that Tyson Fury fought dealing in white is one he can go and fight uh the brother that he knocked out on meet the furious because make no mistake about it guys i'm a massive Tyson Fury fan i respect what he has done i respect who he is and boy does he have a presence when he walked out you know you're watching the heavyweight champion in the world my question to you all is this not like for you guys to engage with me in the comments a little bit I believe this is Francis being unorthodox. This is Francis being game. This is Francis just trying is why this became so difficult for Tyson Fury.
Starting point is 00:10:30 But what is it a bigger indicator of it for you? Is it more Tyson Fury looked like he didn't seem to take him serious early in the fight? Or is this more about Francis and Ghana, putting in the work, having the champion's mindset, and putting himself in this fight? I mean, my phone is going absolutely crazy right now. Absolutely crazy. Because if Francis goes to the PFL right now, sure, some of these boxing fans will follow him over with a new power respect to who he is. But in these big boxing fights, they have no choice. He's one of their guys.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Like, he can fight those guys who just fought the best. If you can fight the best, why can't you fight the others? Why? But if you go to PFL, you go fight mixed martial arts, then you come back and you fight Deonti Wilder. The boys are going crazy in the group messes right now. This is what Terry and have said. Fight one of the PFL heavyweight. Those guys are all about top 15 caliber heavyweights.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Beat them, make some money. Fight Wilder. Then fight another PFL guy. Then you fight Anthony Joshua in Cameroon. I'm tapping into all that. I'm watching all. All of that. Every one of those scenarios that I just played out,
Starting point is 00:11:47 I'm watching Francis and Gano do right now. I'm watching it. These guys are going nuts on this. I mean, people, look, people are going crazy. They're sending me now tweets. Somebody said, watching in Gano's Post-Fight interview, he's never going back to MMA.
Starting point is 00:12:09 He's never going to settle for anything less than 10 million a fight. People just going crazy. on Twitter right now. And that's what you want. You want people, you want people talking and expecting and trying to put together what's next as a fighter. Francis Ngano has all these options. But did Tyson Fury just look past him? It's a question. You know who lost tonight? You know who lost tonight the sport of boxing? Because you got a dominant heavyweight champion that just fought a guy making his pro debut to a split decision when you already have another fight
Starting point is 00:12:45 on the books for December. So whether it be taking him light, whether it be Francis was better than he expected, it does not matter. There is going to be some work to be done to restore the way that Tyson Fury has looked at right now as he heads into this next fight with Yusik.
Starting point is 00:13:06 And honestly, after watching him, if that is who he is today, I don't know if that fight should be against you. This is a man that has retired before and came back because he said boxing still fills his spirit. Hell, it can fill your spirit. But if you can't fight at the level or compete at the level that you were before
Starting point is 00:13:27 and have been known for for so long, you might have to reconsider stepping away again if you're the gypsy king, one of the greatest boxers we've ever seen. Man, what a night. I don't get many Saturdays at home. Guys, I love combat sports. I really am just a fan of all things combat.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Most people will be watching football on a Saturday. Not me. If there's a fight, I'm watching the fight. And tonight I got to watch a guy that I consider a friend really do the impossible. Francis did the impossible. And everybody doubted them. And I did too.
Starting point is 00:14:07 So hats off to the predator. dude made a boatload of money and he walks away looking like a shining diamond because whoever expected that for Tyson Fury I mean big fight coming in December
Starting point is 00:14:23 because you already put pen to paper but even by putting pen to paper and felt a little bit disrespectful when he even said it to Ariel earlier in the week he said you know what man it is disrespectful I'd have never done that but if the promoters are saying hey we need to announce this one
Starting point is 00:14:38 How could you not as an athlete go, well, maybe this guy just isn't going to be as real as we think. Tonight, Francis showed that he is. For my money, we see him in PFL next and we see him in all those big boxing fights. The guy has the world in his hands right now. Let's see what Francis and Gano does with it. Man, I cannot wait to text. I'm a text him. I'm texting the predator.
Starting point is 00:15:01 But, guys, Francis and Gano is the baddest man on the planet. Make no mistake about it. It's not quite. that anymore. I don't know who else could do what he just did tonight in the boxing ring. And I know those boxers can't do what he does in the mixed martial arts cage. So conversation over. Now I'm going to watch the football.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Man, Saturday in the D.C. household can be real fun. You guys live the best life getting to watch fights from home. Unreal. Until next time, guys. Peace.
