Starting point is 00:03:07 See dkng.com slash B-Ball for eligibility and deposit restrictions, terms, and responsible gaming resources. What's up, Doug? How you doing, my guy? How you feeling, brother? Good, bro. Thanks for checking in with me, like always. I always appreciate your time. You know, I never take it for granted.
Starting point is 00:03:29 DP. Bro, so I was just, when I was coming down to interview you, I started singing your walkout song. You know what they called me on TV singing that shit before? Yeah, I remember that. That's bad. I can't be doing that, man. Sitting at the desk, you would...
Starting point is 00:03:42 Sitting at the desk commenting, I'm singing your walkout song. It's good to still be as much of a fan about it, you know, because you guys... And then you got that hat tip, tip low, you know? Kind of walk with that swag. What are you feeling in those moments when you're walking to the octagon?
Starting point is 00:03:55 I ran because I was a little nervous. Like, what are you feeling when you making that walk? I'm nervous, too. Yeah. I'm confident. I'm excited. I know it's about to go down. I mean, a minute away from whatever the destiny is going to be,
Starting point is 00:04:07 that's exciting, man. It's unknown. You know the walk. No matter how prepared you are. And no matter how many times you do it. Oh, it doesn't go away. It's like when they tell you it's time to walk and they start counting down five, four, three, two, one.
Starting point is 00:04:17 That's some intention. Oh, yeah. It's the best, though. It really is the best. Like, and that kind of leads me to this. So last week, I'm on my channel and I'm talking about you in your career. And I say something, I say, I say this. I'm going to tell you exactly what I said.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Is this for your channel this interview? Yes. Okay. All right. I said. I said. I hate hearing that you might walk away because you've meant so much to the sport and you've meant so much to us. And then also because when you start looking to the end, like, you're a very wealthy man.
Starting point is 00:04:51 You know, you've made a lot of money. You're doing good. It's like easy to kind of look at the other side and be okay with the other side because I did that, right? I put a timeline on my career. When you start talking about the end, what type of emotions, like, come over you? Because you're still really young. He's 35, right? Yeah, 35.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And you've got plenty of years left. Like, what type of emotion are you feeling when you're doing that? Just really wondering if I can walk away and be content with not doing it again because I've been doing it for so long. You know, but yeah, I'm 35, but I have a lot of fights, man. I've been in a lot of crazy fights. But you and I just talk about the rush of that walk. It's a drug. How can you replicate that?
Starting point is 00:05:31 That's what I was going to fill that void post-fighting. Yeah. I just need to stay busy. And I have a lot of stuff going on, you know, but I don't know if anything's ever going to be that. there is nothing like it it's like it literally is you'll never like find it again but i have an idea you know i can do like a podcast yeah i'm sure you'd love that oh i'd love to do that you know oh that's agree you agree no no no no no no no you just shook my hand you agree it okay okay no but um i got you i got you i got your head i have some old sleek shit right there i was like
Starting point is 00:06:00 that's like standing on the corner and laugh me and you shake a dude hand like hey man you said you can give me $20 yeah you know i texted you the other day i said the Prudential centers on Lafayette Street I said is it Destiny and you said that's some crazy shit Do you like Does any of this stuff matter to you know Dustin It's cool and it matters to me
Starting point is 00:06:21 But I know to the main thing It doesn't it has nothing to do with what's going on But it's good energy, it's good momentum You know I love that You know when we met Miami right you walked in And you're coming off the Gaichi fight And I said to myself
Starting point is 00:06:34 I said I'm going to ask him about a title fight Because I know That he lost the last one whatever, but I'm going to ask him about a title fight just to see where his mind is and see what he thinks he has to do in order to earn one. And you said, I'm only one good performance from winning the championship.
Starting point is 00:06:49 And when I said it, and you said it, I was like, well, but is Benoit Sandini going to be enough? And you said, if I can beat him in the right way, I'm one fight away. Did you feel it to me like, man, I'm going to be on the short list to get this championship opportunity? I thought I was right back in the mix, but then
Starting point is 00:07:05 we had Armin, Gachi. Things just had to fall into place the exact way it did for this to happen. Yeah. Yeah. And then when you got to call for Islam, Mahachiav. Oh, I was at a viewing party
Starting point is 00:07:15 in Mohegan Sun with my wife, fans everywhere. I got to call the night of 300. Mohegan Sun. That's in Atlantic City? No, Connecticut. Oh, I'm about to say it more. Thank God you're in Atlantic City.
Starting point is 00:07:26 That place sucks. Atlantic City sucks so bad. Neuer Shetheed? Neuer. Yeah, that's the real hood out here. Yeah. I'm heavy out here. They love me in Newark.
Starting point is 00:07:36 No. So when you get that call, What do you do? You look to Joe Lee and go, hey, I just got a call. No, Hunter starts texting me right after Armin and Charles get out the cage. He said, hey, I'm going to Armand's locker room right now. Are you willing to jump into this if he turns it down? He said, because I guaranteed the winner of this fight a title shot.
Starting point is 00:07:54 So I'm like, well, first of all, Gachie had to lose, right? Because he would have been the next guy. Yeah. So Gatia had to lose. Then Armin had to say no. Or Charles had to say no. And I thought those guys might take a lot of damage and not be able to turn around in six weeks or five weeks. But they didn't fight in the...
Starting point is 00:08:08 The fight wasn't as brutal as some of y'all fights would have been. No, no. You know what I'm saying? So it seemed like it was possible. Yeah, for sure. It just happened to happen the way it did. And then I waited, maybe he called me or texted me right after the fight, he said he's going in the locker room.
Starting point is 00:08:22 And he left me on kind of waiting, bro. I was like, pacing, sweating. Like, what's going on? What's going on? Then about 30, 40 minutes, he calls me. He says, hey, you're in. You're fighting in New Jersey for the world title. Like, shit, bro.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Packed up my stuff. Flew home. Packed up. Then flew straight to Florida. Home would be... Louisiana. No, I flew from Connecticut to Louisiana. Which is Florida.
Starting point is 00:08:43 Which is Louisiana. Connecticut to Louisiana for one day, pack up all my stuff, and then the Florida. Okay, so you're claiming that your home is Lafayette? I'm just saying you're claiming... You're claiming you don't have one of them fluffy hats in your closet? No, you're like, that's what you did say to me. You said you might as well be Dagestanding.
Starting point is 00:09:01 You are. Dustin, why are you going to do me like that? You did me like that. You did us like that. You did us, the 3-37. No, I don't know. I mean, I don't know. We are the Dagestead is the Dagestan of the United States.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Yeah? Yeah, we are the daggestand of the United States. So you get the call that you're fighting Islam, right? How quickly do you call Mattis Gamrod? Because when I saw him sitting there, I said, oh, you got the right guy to start to help you prepare for this type of challenge. Like how quickly did you go, hey, man, I'm going to need you. And how big a part this man playing the... I think when they announced that he might have hit me up and said, hey, I'm in if you need me.
Starting point is 00:09:33 And he was there as soon as I got to Florida. So, and we just got off a campaign. camp together, he fought RDA. So I gave him a lot of South Pole work. And during that camp, I was fighting BSD, so he was giving me South Pole work. And we just, he beats me up, man. This guy's good. This guy's good. So when you look back on that fight in Miami, what do you, because he kept wrestling, right? He was wrestling and wrestling and wrestling and just force the shots. Benoit was just, yeah, but he never took me down once, right? Yeah, I know. But do you think that was preparing you for, what do you mean he took yourself down? Jumping guillotines. This guy never took me
Starting point is 00:10:06 down once. But you liked that guillotine? Yeah, but he didn't take me down. But he just keeps shooting and shooting and shooting. Was that the expectation? Yeah, I thought he would be grappling heavy because he fought a couple guys from our team and, you know, all of his fights. Well, frivola he knocked out, but that was kind of short, you know. I thought he was going to wrestle. So you knock him out, you get the title fight, you start preparation. Do you go back and watch the Kib fight? No, I haven't seen in a while. It's too different, right? Yeah, they're two different. They're similar, but different styles, you know. Where's the differences?
Starting point is 00:10:34 He's more of a, he'll take low shots, singles, doubles. Islam's trying to body lock, trip, clinch a lot. Not saying that Islam won't shoot low shots, but it's just a different style. I think the top pressure is similar, but Islam will take more chances going for submissions, giving up positions. You know, Kibb would never roll for an arm bar or, you know, give up position. Do you think that you can take much from that last fight to apply it to this one? I can take the understanding.
Starting point is 00:11:01 You know, I've never felt pressure like that. and intelligence of body positioning and stuff. Kabib does so many things that are like very intricate that you would know because you're a lifelong grappler, but there's so much stuff going on in there that I never felt somebody. He knew where I was going to take the next step before I took it when we're grappling.
Starting point is 00:11:21 He knew where my weight was. There's a lot of things he does that's incredible. And I understand that better now. I had no clue going into it. That's always the hardest part about going with someone like that. That happened. I mean, it happened with Jones, right? because he was so long and I didn't understand how I would manage that.
Starting point is 00:11:36 But, yeah. So, Dustin, you fought for the belt now. You've lived in these moments, the big moments. How is your mindset going into this one? How freeing is it knowing that, man, your Hall of Famer regardless, you know, of what happens inside the Octagon? But when you win that championship, if you become a champion on Saturday, now it's just the icing on the cake. Do you make it that, those types of stakes? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:01 And I don't, honestly, I don't know if I did enough to be in the Hall of Fame. I know when the World Title would secure that to be a Hall of Famer. And that's something that's important for me. It's always, you know, growing up as a young fighter, I always looked up to the greats and really put them on a pedestal. And it's such an honor to be part of that group, you know, the MMA royalty. You know, I want to be, when I'm done, I want to be part of that. Because I feel like I've given this sport everything and poured so much into it, man.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Sacrifice so much to even get to this point. But I just want to be content with it. at all DC but I know winning the belt would finish the story it's the last chapter of the book so what made you bring the baby here this time why she comes I don't know if I'm going to do this again and I want her to see it yeah you know you know like it she'll never not want to go after this though if you decide to keep going she'll want to go to everyone yeah it's like your dad becomes a superhero yeah to that kid and it's the unknown out there that's kind of the part I'm worried about like her seeing me bleeding and stuff like that
Starting point is 00:13:01 You know, she's taking stitches out and seeing me come home with cuts and black eyes and broken noses and stuff, but she's never seen me, like, in front of her hurting. On the countdown show, you said, looking to the camera and said, I'm knocking this long Macha Chiv out. Is there something you've seen in the build or in the prep that lets you know that you can put him off? I just know if he comes in fumbling over his feet, his weights over his feet, and he's trying to hit me with big shots. I'm going to set him up and he's going to run into something.
Starting point is 00:13:30 You know. Go ahead. No, and we've seen him hurt before. And anybody, even guys who haven't been never been dropped, we know they can be put down to human. I just think I'm the guy to do it. I was wondering about that, right? Seeing that the guy knocked him out way in 2015, right?
Starting point is 00:13:46 You know it's there. It's like it's hard to find, you know, sometimes we're preparing for people, and it's like there is no real footage of them getting hurt. So it's hard to really go, I'm going to be the first person to do it, but you saw him get knocked out. You know that a punch can land.
Starting point is 00:14:00 You can put him out. Like, can you look back on that and say, man, I could not. I mean, is that part of it? For sure. That's with anybody. But, and even guys who haven't been, never touched a mat in their life. I know I can put him down. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:12 I can crack, man. And I have the skills and timing to put anybody away and make you make mistakes. But also, if I would look back at that fight, he's a different fighter now. He fights completely different, you know. Yeah. I just wanted to tell you, though, man, honestly, like, the reason I don't want you to retire is because it's selfish. I'm a fan, man. It'd be hard for us as fans of the UFC to not have you walk into the octagon a couple times a year,
Starting point is 00:14:36 but we appreciate you and your work. And, Doug, I'm a fan, man. I know when I met you way back in the day walking into that little bullshit, you all had. When I beat you up? Man, you know you didn't beat me. That's some bullshit. I think I took you down that day. You took me down?
Starting point is 00:14:49 Dustin, Porriere. That was before he moved to Dagestan, though. You were in, uh... So all my Olympics and shit didn't matter the way. You taking me down? Nope. But you just said, Mateo's takes you down. I'm talking about the offense.
Starting point is 00:15:02 I'm pinning Mattel's game rock. I'm pinning Mattel's game rock. I don't know, man. He's strong. He's strong. And he looks like he's shaped. Always. That's my problem.
Starting point is 00:15:11 I'm not in shape no more. I'm wrong. Yeah. Hey, DP, good luck this weekend. My brother, thank you for checking it with me as always, man. You are the man. Starting point is 00:16:08 You want to heat the whole thing up. Put it in it. Yeah, yeah. It's... Have the bottle. Not that. No, no, no, no. I'm going to burn these mugs of California. Or like a half a bottle in a crawfish bottle.
Starting point is 00:16:16 In Lafayette, they're putting that whole bottle in that. Oh, yeah. California, I'm burning them up. My man. Thank you, bro. Good luck this weekend, dog. You know, you're a band, Dup. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy.
