Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, guys, I'm back with my boy Ben Askron. Ben, what's up, champ? Not much. You know, we're getting ready to go to beautiful Fargo to North Dakota for the national championships next week.
Starting point is 00:01:50 I'm really excited and have a lot of guys there, and I'm sure I'll see you there. You're all tanned up and everything. You got to, I mean, it's Summerbod, Ben asked. Remember you said that I didn't have the arm. Blue that arm. Hey, dog, the other day, the other day I saw you going to Russell Kegan O'Toole, you got your ass whipped at this point. I competed pretty well.
Starting point is 00:02:09 There's no chance you can Russell Kegan O'Too still anymore. No chance. Daniel, well, no, I turned 39 next week, so I expect a birthday card from you. And listen, I can still scrap. I love wrestling. I wrestled Mitchell a lot, St. Sinclair, Kegan. I had so much fun.
Starting point is 00:02:26 God, you were still wrestling those dudes. Yeah. Nuts. I barely wrestle. I said twice a week. I say twice a week as well as I'll go twice a week and then that's it. Yes, I barely wrestle. When I do, I pay for it for like three days.
Starting point is 00:02:38 But Asker, I wanted to talk to you about something, bro. It's like really kind of making the rounds and in MMA, it's been crazy. It's been really crazy. So last week, Drake's Duplessi beat Robert Whitaker and earned himself a championship fight
Starting point is 00:02:56 against Israel to Sania. Israel Adasanya gets to the octagon. He looks noticeably upset when he's watching. You can tell that there's something there. And publicly, it has been discussed a bit. Izzy gets in there and starts to use the N word repeatedly to Drake is Duplice. You would think that it was an emotional response from Edassania. But if you dig a little deeper into it and you look at his Instagram and stuff,
Starting point is 00:03:22 he said he was going to get up there and say that to Drake is DuPlesi. obviously apartheid and all kinds of things the south africans the africans the dutch colonists so much went into this story and it's emotionally charged when you're sitting there watching that outside of fringing every time izzie says that word what are you thinking like hey and here's the deal right yeah is he saying that repeatedly and like every human being or every black person is like let drake and say it bad like Like if he says it back, like every black person sitting there going, if he says it back, like, this shit's over.
Starting point is 00:04:05 But like, what are you thinking in that moment? It's so bad. You know, what I thought he was actually to go with it with how aggressive he was. I thought he was going to go to colonizers, right? Because the history of South Africa. It was that. It seemed like it was going to get there. South Africa has a really crazy history, apartheid, and it was bad.
Starting point is 00:04:22 And I kind of thought that's where he was going. And so now, you know, look at it. I was thinking about this a lot because I think it is interesting is Dracus does live there. He, you know, and that was kind of what he said that made everyone upset. He said,
Starting point is 00:04:36 I, no, but that's not, that's not the case, though, Ben, that's not the case. What he said was,
Starting point is 00:04:42 so he said that after. He did. He did say that in the octagon once. He said, I am, I live in Africa. Yeah. I train in Africa.
Starting point is 00:04:51 But that was after repeatedly saying, I will be the real African champion. Yeah, that's what I was, I was going to say that. So he said, he said, these guys don't actually live here. They have African heritage. I'll be the real African champion, which I don't actually have a past of living somewhere, Daniel.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And I don't, I like, I don't think you have near ancestors that came over. So it's like, I don't feel a close tie to another country. So I can't tell you how I'd feel if someone said, well, you're not really from that country. Yeah. Because that's essentially what Drake is the saying. You guys aren't really African. do you tell a dude from Nigeria? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Like, how do you tell these guys that they're not African? Yeah. They're literally African as African comes. Like, I'm African American. Like, I'm an American guy, born and raised. Kamar Usman, African descent. Yeah, until age four, he lived there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Born and raised and are not born, but raised in the United States, right? So maybe question, but those guys. like those guys are African. It doesn't change because you don't live there. But when he's saying it, it's, it's, is he so upset? And honestly, I don't love the use of the word. Like I've said time and time again, that's the part that I'm like, it could be a different way you could have done it.
Starting point is 00:06:20 But it's hard to ignore that there's a guy from South Africa who is African. I mean, reality is, Drake's Duplice lives as born, born and raised in Africa. He's African. And it wasn't his choice for, Francis and Ghanu and tomorrow, Uswan.
Starting point is 00:06:37 And there are so many different people that are of that culture. Yeah. So it wasn't Drake's Duplice's idea to be born in South Africa and come there and colonize, right? That was probably many, many, many generations back.
Starting point is 00:06:51 So kind of not his fault. So I probably do, I understand where he's coming from. I am African. I live here. These guys do not. but then, and that's where I thought Izzy was going to go.
Starting point is 00:07:00 He, and he kind of maybe was a little too emotional and maybe that's what you can get there, but, you know, if he would have said, like, you're calling us not real Africans. You guys are the one that came to Africa and colonized us and did all the nasty things that they did. I kind of thought that's where he was going to go with it. And that probably would have made a lot more sense and it would have made a lot of people say,
Starting point is 00:07:20 oh, I got on an Izzy side on this one. People were lost. Like, yeah, I got a group message with all my friends and they were all like, they were all like kind of like, why is he doing that? Why is he doing that? Right?
Starting point is 00:07:33 These are all black guys. And then Rogan sat back down because Joe just has like this, all this knowledge just like scored. I don't know. He immediately sits down. I go, what was that all about? He goes, well, he goes,
Starting point is 00:07:47 Dracus is like Dutch. And the Dutch colonists took over Africa and apartheid and he just went into this whole thing and then he pulls up his phone and gives me like a quick, breakdown, I screen grab it and send it to my group message. So then after they read it, I'm talking guys that you know,
Starting point is 00:08:04 Jamil and all kind of other guys, they're like, as I get more and more into it, I can see how Izzy was so upset. Because reality was it just looked like there was no direction behind it. And I'm not saying that Izzy's, you know, the use of the word I did not like. Yeah. But when you really dig it. into it. You got a guy telling three African champions that they're not African, you could see where those guys would get upset. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. I mean,
Starting point is 00:08:36 I totally get it. And Francis is the one that actually lived there for the longest, right? Because I believe, you know, he actually had a very tough upbringing. And then I don't even move to France until like in early 20s maybe or somewhere in there. So that one, that's most like nonsense to me where I don't think is he, I don't think he actually lived there for any period of time is my what I've read. So I guess that would be like the biggest one you could argue. But yes. Parents are Nigerian.
Starting point is 00:09:03 His parents are like, they're born. They're Nigerian people. Here's another thing. And I ask you this. When when when we are seeing this type of emotional response or at least it seems emotional from Edisona, is that cause for concern as he approaches this fight with Dupil? I mean, that's probably best case scenario for duplecy is not a lot of people perform well emotionally is that he comes out and he makes a mistake because duplos he's so awkward and it works. Headlock was super awkward.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Even as striking, the way his back foot is posted, I don't know if you were watching this, but it was like, I just doesn't look right. And then, but it works. And I said this on Twitter and people are roasting me. He's like, but I don't care. If it looks ugly and it works, whatever. And that's where, and he obviously does throw everything. really hard. He throws a lot of power to everything.
Starting point is 00:09:58 He's very big for the weight class. So if, you know, Izzy was really good against Coast at being like disciplined and countering, and that's probably where he's at his best. So that's probably where he would want to be. That's one of his biggest gifts is this counterstrike and ability.
Starting point is 00:10:15 You know what's, uh, you know what I didn't expect? You know what I didn't expect? And I think this is so, unique to Eresanya. Eresanya is not backing down to anything he said. He doesn't care. He's like doubling down.
Starting point is 00:10:34 He's posted more and he's still calling this guy that. So it's like, well, I can't imagine, because I don't, like you said, I don't know it. But I can't imagine how this upset he is. It's hard to see how upset he is because we saw him with the dog collar before he fought elect meheda because he said he's going back to the dog inside of him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:58 I can't imagine how upset he is and what his approach looks like into this fight because he doesn't, like he, it's clear that he just cannot stand his dude. And Drake has told me at a fighter meeting that bro, I felt like I felt a little bit like I believed him because he said to, he said to me, he goes,
Starting point is 00:11:25 this whole thing started. I go, what's the Adasanya beef rooted in? And he goes, this whole thing started with me doing an article and no one, they kind of put headlines. Camaro Usman responded. And then is he responded?
Starting point is 00:11:43 Then Francis responded. He goes, but the reality is nobody actually listened to the interview. I read the article. Because if, they did, I didn't say that. He said, I said, I'm the only one that lives there and stays there. But then when you do actually listen to the interview,
Starting point is 00:12:03 Dracus does say, uh, the belt hasn't been taken back to Africa. Not true. Those guys all took the belts back to Africa. Okay, but he did say, the belt has not resided in Africa. It hasn't resided.
Starting point is 00:12:17 He said the belt hasn't been taken back to Africa. They've all been taken back. They really all have. Let me just be his point. Okay, so listen, I think, I don't really see it like wrong. And this is where Dana said like, it's a fight game. Like, if these guys. Nothing's off limits.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Yeah. If they want to use this to build it up, kind of whatever. And Izzy's post-fight speech, I didn't really mind when it started. But I thought I wish you would have like expounded on like this is why I'm feeling the way I'm feeling, not just repeating the same lines. That was what I didn't like is like, just say a little more. Like, use your words here. me why you're so upset. Because the reality is, it does go, it went over a lot of people's heads, even, like I said,
Starting point is 00:12:58 mine in my group until I was told exactly what it is. Yeah. And it's still, still, no excuse for the use of the word. I still feel the same about the use of the word. Yeah. But it's his, it's his approach to take, right? We don't, we don't determine how a man approaches something like that because you don't know his feelings. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:19 And so Drake is actually does live in it. Africa. And so he's not really that incorrect in saying that. No, he does. And trains there. He lives there. Trains there. He said, I would upset people every day. Me and Cameron, like, those things are true. Those things are true. Yes. So we can see why he would say that. And then also, you know, Bill, and I don't, I don't really know either one of these guys personally. So I don't know how they really feel. It seems like they feel this way. But also, if you're a smart guy and your Drake, he jumped the line. He jumped the line because of this. For sure. He said, I want to fight that guy. That's what you want to do as a fighter.
Starting point is 00:13:53 You want to be able to jump the line a little bit. And now the build up into this fight, it's going to be huge. He's going to make a bunch of money. So maybe he's playing it up a little bit. I have no idea. But if he is, it's kind of smart on his part. You know, it's a, it's a, it's an ugly, ugly thing. But it is going to make for a crazy fight that we don't have to wait long for. It's going to happen in Australia. Oh, it is? Nine weeks. Yeah. Dude, Dracus took no damage or they're going to fight in September.
Starting point is 00:14:21 It's, it literally is going to happen very quickly. And because of that, we get to get some resolution to it. But the reality is like, if it's just rooted in all this historical stuff that it is, there really won't be resolution to it because then Izzy will still have the same types of feelings he has towards
Starting point is 00:14:42 how, you know, his people were done by the people that colonized Africa. and South Africa. So it's just, it will never be resolution. But I mean, if Izzy can win, it'll feel great for him.
Starting point is 00:14:55 But if he loses, boy, could you imagine if he loses to Dracus? That's the one guy he doesn't want to lose you. Yes. Yeah. That's good. Shit, if he loses that. You looked up and went,
Starting point is 00:15:08 uh, that would be bad. Not good. You can't lose to. Like, you're in a situation not where you cannot lose. But if he does fight emotional, I mean,
Starting point is 00:15:17 I think if he fights emotional, emotionally, that's probably his most chance to, his highest chance to lose is fighting emotionally. He headlocked Robert Whitaker who can actually wrestle a little bit. How bad was that damn headlock? No, I'm taking Robert. I told one of my friends, my friend said something to me. I said, if I got hit in that headlock, I'd probably hook my shoes down forever. Bro, but he took him, he stepped through on it.
Starting point is 00:15:42 I understand. And then you squat your legs and you pick up and then you smash and throw or something. I think Rob might have been a little tired at that point. He must have been tired or fatigued and he got hit a couple times and it's not just straight wrestling, you know, it's crazy. Hey, but ultimately we were there to watch Alexander Volcanowski like this dude is next level, man.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Mind, preparation. He really is as he's got coaches, obviously, but he's like a coach that's playing because he's that smart at game planning and building everything like what did you take from that dude after watching do what he did see i here yeah i mean i thought it was a really high chance that he wins by decision was kind of how i thought he was and he you know yair is really dangerous very tricky fights in a lot of situations and so i thought okay he'll play it cool not be as aggressive and he was pretty aggressive in his takedown as the first two and
Starting point is 00:16:38 did a lot of damage and then the third when he when he uh had um yire pressing he covered him perfectly I mean, it was so smooth. He's got great counter striking. He's got great counter striking. He's going to fight Ily to pour you next. Dude going to have to get in the room, try to build a game plan. And I feel confident that if I'm watching him improve at the rate that he does, yeah, it'll be a better version the next time he steps into the octagon every single time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:07 It's crazy watching this dude just get better. I know I said it on the show. I've been really impressed by the Kapuri guy. But at this point in time, betting against Volkanowski, you feel like an idiot, right? It just doesn't seem to work. Doesn't seem to work.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Because you got him, he beats the best guys, and he's starting to beat the best guys easy. Then he goes up there and fights Islam and fights him well, which nobody thought was possible. Yeah. I mean, I,
Starting point is 00:17:39 this is, so I was, thought he had no chance in that one, and he competed really, well. And this one, I thought, yeah, he was going to be competitive and it wasn't really competitive. And so now it's like, man, I've underestimated
Starting point is 00:17:52 this guy the last two times. I'm not going to do it this next time. Even though I think this next guy, I think he's really, really good. But given what he's done, how do you underestimate him again? I'd be an idiot. You'd be an idiot to underestimate Alexander Wolkenowski. That would not be good.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
