Starting point is 00:04:40 at times it felt like it was so far away but right before you were in one of the biggest rivalries division has ever seen. Were you able to take note of that in the time of wait? Just sit back and take it into
Starting point is 00:04:52 how special it was because I got to be honest, Julianne. You made me make a sound when you won that I had never made a sound like that in my life. I never sounded like that.
Starting point is 00:05:02 It made me, I made it sound like I was a little girl at a Taylor Swift concert because it was the most amazing thing. Unbelievable. Yes. Were you able to take note of all that time? It was great. It was an amazing moment.
Starting point is 00:05:15 I feel sometimes my wind gets overshadowed by you squealing in the celebration. They care more about that than they do me actually winning. I'm just joking. I wasn't able to soak it in as much as I would have liked because I turned around so quickly and fought right away. I was like, I'll do that again tomorrow. Let's go. you know, and I think that I should have gave myself a little bit more time to enjoy it, to soak it in,
Starting point is 00:05:37 and to actually give myself the time that I needed mentally. But that's okay because here we are again climbing up the mountain. Yeah. If anybody is the picture perfect of perseverance and determination, it's me. You were bullish on it. I deserve a title fight. Yes. Regardless of what other people said, you were bullish on, this is my opportunity.
Starting point is 00:05:56 I deserve it. What made you so certain that it should be you? fighting for the belt? Well, I mean, I don't like to dwell on the past, but if you think about it, when I won the ultimate fighter, they were allowing women to fight in the UFC at the same time that I was fighting four girls in one time in that division. So it was like, I had beat four girls. Ronda Rousey had just come into the division and they just gifted her a belt. And I was like, I just beat four girls. I should be fighting for the title. So then after I had an injury for two years, I tore my knee, I came back and I won. And then I won. And then I won.
Starting point is 00:06:33 again against Jessica I and then I won again against Kazingano so I was fighting girls in the top five of the division and I felt I deserve a title shot you know and then I lost one they said well if you don't beat Valentina Shipschenko then you're not going to fight for the title and I'm thinking how many more girls do you guys want me to fight and beat
Starting point is 00:06:48 you know so I felt like I was falling on deaf ears I unfortunately lost a Valentina but it was a blessing in disguise because I had my baby and I would I wouldn't trade my baby for a belt any day of the week so it ended up being a blessing for me that I had my daughter more time off and then after coming back from
Starting point is 00:07:09 having a baby I beat Nico Montano on two weeks notice and I was like I want a title shot that is actually the most like Nico Montano her story is the crazy story I was walking the toughest I've ever fought really you know what's crazy I was walking through the apex the other day or the PI and I walked past that wall with all the champions and I saw Nico and I was like oh my god it's almost like you forget right like she was a champion um um um um um um um um Germaine Durandumie, champion. It's hard to be just forgotten like that. But that was a tough fight.
Starting point is 00:07:39 You got through another champion and ultimately it led to a title fight. Getting me to this point. Yes, sir. You had one of the greatest rivalries. When you left, you and Amanda left the division in a good place. It was in a really good place
Starting point is 00:07:56 in terms of people wanting to watch it, people knowing what it was, and then Raquel Pennington fought against the girl that she said. Myra Buenos Airesula. It was bad. It was a bad fight. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Right? To the point that people like, your boy, Ryan Clark said, if that is the best as division has to offer, we should cancel it. How hard was it for you to watch that with the belief that you're the best in this division? It was very difficult because I was like,
Starting point is 00:08:23 you're celebrating like that was some amazing feat, you know what I mean? And that was just like such an incredible fight. And to me, I was like falling asleep, you know? Even Myra Buena Silva was falling to sleep. She was literally like on the canvas like this, chilling like she's tanning on Miami Beach, you know? So I was like, what am I watching here?
Starting point is 00:08:42 For me, it was like I just pictured it in my head as an interim title because I felt like that wasn't really indicative of the division's best. And so that's how I felt personally. You know, but then when you see that, right, what do you think happen? Because Raquel Pennington has fought for the belt before. She had another opportunity. Do you think the safety came from just not knowing if she would ever get another chance? Because when you got your chance, it was guns blazing from the very start, right?
Starting point is 00:09:11 As most do when presented with that opportunity, what do you think happened to a person that has fought for so long and had been in the championship opportunity before? Or do you believe that's just her? That is Raquel Pennington, and that was her at her best. I do believe that that is Raquel Pennington. You know, she's very patient. She's very durable. and you know unless you stick it to her like I'm going to or Amanda Nunes she's just kind of always there
Starting point is 00:09:37 you know what I mean and so it's not something that jumps off the pages and you think oh my gosh this was incredible it's just kind of like you know the coasting of of the way that she fights it's just kind of just that is Raquel Pennington it's she earned it she absolutely earned it was my fault that I couldn't be there you know what I mean and I take 110% accountability for that I was injured I could not go into the fight with Raquel. So I blame me for that personally. However, you know, when I watch that, again, it's not something that jumps off the pages
Starting point is 00:10:10 where I think, oh, my God, I'm going to go hide under a rock. I don't think I can do it. It's like, no, no, I can do this. I literally told Ryan we were doing a show together at the time, and I go, if you think Giuliana wanted to kill you, if you ever see Raquel Pennington, after saying the shit you say, she's going to want to murder you.
Starting point is 00:10:27 And he was like, dude, I'm almost out of the UFC cup. So I'll be good. So you guys on the Ultimate Fighter together, and so it's a lot of talking, right? You said she's the bad roommate. You say that you guys have gone back and forth. Generally, when that happens, especially on the show, the UFC is forcing you guys together. How did it take so long for this fight to come together?
Starting point is 00:10:53 You know, I'm not really sure, but like I said, when I won the ultimate fighter, I was on the trajectory of going up and fighting up the last. up the ladder and fighting, yeah, and fighting the top three, top five, top, you know, I was fighting the top girls, the top contenders in the division. So I don't really know what she was doing. She said she's been thinking about this fight for the last 13 years. I haven't thought about you for 13 years. I just been going straight up, you know. So for me, I've just been focusing on fighting the best and fighting the champions and
Starting point is 00:11:20 doing what I need to do. I can't really say why this fight hasn't come together. But it's hilarious now because it's a full circle moment of it actually coming together. You know, everything always has a way of working out in the best way. So I'm just confident in the way that it is unfolding right now. You didn't come here early. No. With the altitude.
Starting point is 00:11:39 And as someone that I would die every time I went to Colorado to train for the Olympics. Yeah. It's worrisome. Like, what did you do, right, to replicate that, to try and train yourself to get ready for the altitude? Because I watched Jan Behovic, Beatlech's Pereira. In the first round, he got tired. Yeah. He got here right on time.
Starting point is 00:12:02 I watched many fighters do that. Got it. The biggest point, King Velasquez, when he fought Fabrice over in Mexico. In Mexico City. Right? The altitude was able to get him, like a bear jumps on your back. Yeah. What have you done to try to prepare yourself to deal with the attitude?
Starting point is 00:12:20 The altitudes aren't. And the attitude. Attitude. You'll give it. So there's a few things. I fought here before. Okay. And I am accustomed to fighting in Salt Lake.
Starting point is 00:12:32 And then also I fought in Denver, Colorado against Valentina Shepchenko. And I went out three weeks early for that. And, you know, I brought my whole team. It was a Mike Tyson entourage. I brought everybody out for the three weeks. And we were living in the Airbnb. And when I got there, I ran. And my Strength and conditioning coach said, how do you feel?
Starting point is 00:12:51 And I said, I feel great. And he says, exactly. I told you we didn't need to come out here three weeks early. If you're in shape, you're in shape. At the end of the day, there's got to be a major. mental component where you hit another gear and you say I don't care and I know that you know obviously I was very diligent in practicing my cardio and my endurance is something that has carried me into successful moments so I'm always training for extra cardio extra endurance and making
Starting point is 00:13:16 sure that you know my battery is always full with that being said there's some things that you do in preparation for that like taping your mouth shut and making sure that you can only breathe it through your nose or doing things with straw and making sure that you're breathing through a straw so that you can try to acclimate yourself into these high altitude areas. I did my cardio workouts when I got here and I felt great. And so I just feel like if you're in shape, you're in shape. And at the end of the day, I know how to fight. So just close the cage door and let's get it over with.
Starting point is 00:13:46 You know, Belal Muhammad fought probably a perfect fight out in Manchester. Yes, I was there. You were there. I know, I remember. I saw you. You heard me screaming? Yeah, I heard you screaming. all you.
Starting point is 00:13:57 It's kind of weird. It's crazy that we can actually hear you and we're wearing these cans on our ears. That just tells you how loud you are. Yeah, extremely loud. Best corner in the game, in my opinion. We've seen your guys' team continue to build, right? What would it mean, because you see the VFS now?
Starting point is 00:14:15 Yeah. And it's recognizable before it wasn't. Yeah. Right? But that's because of fighters like you and Belaw and Ignacio and all these athletes. What would it mean to you, guys, for a team out of Chicago? It's not a big team, like American top team.
Starting point is 00:14:29 And what would it mean to have two champions? I think it would mean the world, especially in Chicago, a place that needs that. Yeah, positivity. Yeah, that positivity and that thing where, you know, people are thinking that I don't have to fight in the streets. I can actually make something in my life and change my life through MMA, through mixed martial arts, through fighting. I do think that it's an absolute positive thing. And I would be elated to bring the belt back to the lake, back to Chicago, and wrap. represent the city once again.
Starting point is 00:14:59 You know what was the best thing about you and Balaafat? What? You kind of, you were classy with it. The shit Kiesa did. When you won? Remember when he jumped over the cage? Oh my God, that was crazy. I give him shit about that all the time.
Starting point is 00:15:11 He got so excited. Too excited. He got taken out of there. I want to represent my hometown too of Spokane, Washington, and bring the belt back to the 509, you know. I'm representing two cities. I am a transplant to Chicago. I've been there for the last eight years,
Starting point is 00:15:24 but it feels like home to me. It's like I don't foresee myself moving back to Spokane anytime soon, at least not until my daughter is 18. But with that being said, you can never forget where you came from. You can never forget, you know, your roots. And Spokane is my roots. Washington State is my home. Chicago is my home now. But I'll be representing both Spokane and Chicago.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Before I want to ask you for a prediction on the fight this weekend, you and Raquel Pennington. I know what started back then. Is it just a fight or is there anything more to this? Because it seems like you operate well when you can create a little bit of friction. I'm being honest, it does seem like you operate well when you could create a bit of friction. Because by the time you know Amanda got locked in there, she was like, I want to kill her. And then you just beat her. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:13 No, you know, a lot of people say that. And I'm like, come on. Most of the time I'm just kidding around. I feel like I'm harmless. I'm joking. But at the same time, it's like, no, seriously, I'm serious. I'm going to beat you. And I don't want to shy away from that.
Starting point is 00:16:31 You know, you have a belief in yourself. You have a confidence in yourself. You know how much work and time and effort, blood, sweat, and tears that you put on. So it's almost offensive when you, you know, see these people, for example, my opponent, at all these events every single week. And it's like, what do you think? You're just going to steamroll me? You think you don't have to train for me? I'm offended, you know?
Starting point is 00:16:50 And when I see these things, it just fires me up to make me want to say, like, you're going to regret that, you know? You're training for both me and Kayla. You're going to be sorry for that. You shouldn't have done that. You should have taken me seriously, you know? You think that's a mistake, though, kind of talking. She is speaking about Kayla Harrison, who is essentially the elephant in the room now, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:10 It seems like she's planning for two fights. And also Kayla, like, is planning for two fights. This division, though, now gets a little bit more exciting, right? Because you're back. Right. Kayla's here. It seems like there's a path to where it could be exactly what it was a couple years ago. But again, you seem like the only one that's kind of focusing on the task, even though you say, well, Kayla really doesn't belong yet.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Yeah. Oh, I'm not saying that she doesn't belong. I'm just saying get in line and wait your turn, sweetie. There will be a time for you. But with that being said, you know, is it a mistake? Here's the reality. The reality of the situation is, hey, they're right. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:17:51 Like, I do get injured and I do pull out of fights because I do get injured. What do you want me to do? Trade hard. Yeah, they're telling the truth, you know? So I'm not mad at that comment. I just think it's funny because, like I said, I am making the fight. I am here. It's fight week.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Everything is ready for me to just, you know, get wound up and send me away and get the job done. And you're absolutely right. I am focused on the task at hand. Seems like she's got her focus in other places, you know. How's the fight in this weekend? With me getting my hand raised. I don't care if it comes by knockout. I don't care if I knock you out with a pinky finger.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Whatever I'm when. that cage door closes, I'm going to die to get my hand raised and I have that edge where I'm going to I know I'm not going to die and I don't mean it like I'm going to die literally, but I will give my life to get my hand raised. It is that important to me. You must hit really hard because I never saw Amanda react the way that she reacted when you would actually get your hands on it. So you must hit hard. You know, it's so funny when I was on the ultimate fighter. When I was on the ultimate fighter. Your hands might be bigger than mine. I know. They're not. They're not. When I was on the Ultimate Fighter, they were saying like this,
Starting point is 00:18:56 Giuliana's not that good. When she hits Ms. She hits like this. Yeah, she puts her head down, and she's just like swinging wildly, you know? And a lot of people, very unassuming that I don't hit hard. I don't think that they think that I hit hard. You know, if they see me training, they're like, she sucks, you know.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Everybody's always giving me that, you know, that pass. And it's worked to my advantage because I do hit hard. And it might not look like it. You might not think that. But you're going to feel it when we get locked in there. You're going to feel it. Everybody has an opinion until you're stuck in the octagon with the Venezuelan Vixen. Who challenges for the UFC Bannerway Championship this weekend.
Starting point is 00:19:35 UFC 307 goes down from Salt Lake City, Utah. Make sure you hit the purchase button, buy that pay-per-view, and go tap into everything that Giuliana Payne is doing. Juliana, thank you again for checking in with me. I appreciate it. It's a pleasure. Until next time, guys. Peace.
Starting point is 00:19:54 Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guide. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
