Starting point is 00:03:30 Guys, Tom Aspinall, Interim Heavyweight Champion in the World Fights, UFC 304 this weekend at home. In Manchester, dude lives 20 minutes away. Most people can't fight in their same hometown. You're like right next to the arena. Has that proved challenging? No, it's been all right so far. I think usually, obviously, at the moment,
Starting point is 00:03:51 I'm actually staying in a hotel because I've got little kids and we're on the time change and stuff, and I don't want them to wait me up and all that stuff. But if it wasn't for the time change, I would just be staying at home. It'd be insane. But yeah, it's nice. I feel at home here, of course.
Starting point is 00:04:03 You know, going back to New York, We had that conversation, and when you and I didn't do anything because you were going to eat and everything else, I went and I talked to Michael Bisping, and Michael Bisping was so sure that you were going to make this fight look easy, that no one believed. I said, dude, you're going to lose all of your credibility because you're so far on this side,
Starting point is 00:04:27 thinking he was like being a homer, but then you went out there and you did it. What made that fight so easy? I made Michael Bispin look very You made you literally somehow made Bisbeing look smart I did well I did well for that time
Starting point is 00:04:41 Yeah I do No You know what In all honesty That fight was like the worst Situation for me Because I wasn't prepared I wasn't even close to prepared
Starting point is 00:04:51 To be honest Now I'm after the fight I can say that Do you know what I? At the time Obviously you wanted to say Yeah Would you take your opportunities
Starting point is 00:04:57 And I didn't know if I'd get another one So you got to take them But you know I thought that I mean you know yourself This is heavyweight MMA You just need one shot. And I was aware of that when I took the fight. I wasn't even close to being in shape for that fight, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:05:13 But I'm also aware that my skill level is up there. I feel like I'm honestly, skill for skill, the best heavyweight in the world by far, honestly. But it's heavyweight in me. You need one shot. And as I said before the fight, I'm definitely, I know one thing for sure, if I watch the fight on TV at home, I ain't going to win.
Starting point is 00:05:32 So I've got to be in it to win it. And I was. Mike one time he compared you to Muhammad Ali. That's when it went crazy. That's a bit of a stretch. I was like, oh my God. He was like, he's like Muhammad Ali. Did you see all that?
Starting point is 00:05:45 Yeah, yeah. It was awesome though because then it worked out the way that he told us it was going to work out in this phenomenal. And then, I don't know, after the fight, you're very emotional, right? I loved it because, bro, you're getting your moment. You're getting the UFC championship wrapped around your waist. But then there were people that were critiquel. you. I think John Jones was one of them. You're a champion.
Starting point is 00:06:10 What does it mean to you whenever you see people? A lot of the pundits and the people that speak to sport, we all kind of say, this guy is the real champion because you're the guy that's going to be fighting. Yeah. I know what people mean. I've seen the odd comment here and there. This guy's getting emotional over an interim belt.
Starting point is 00:06:27 It wasn't so much the interim belt for me. That wasn't why I was emotional. I was emotional about the fact that do you know what a stag do is is basically a bachelor party when I took the fight I was fresh off a bachelor party I was fat I wasn't in the gym too much
Starting point is 00:06:46 I wasn't prepared for a fight I didn't have a visa as soon as I learned about the fight I started training I injured my back and then had to fly across the world on a week's notice change the time zone and at the time I was fighting the guy who was the scariest guy in the UFC
Starting point is 00:06:59 the guy was coming off six first round knocking workouts. So it wasn't so much the fact that I won the interim belt. I mean, that was great, obviously. It was more the fact, oh, I've pulled this off in the worst circumstances. You surprised yourself. Yeah, I didn't surprise myself. I knew that could happen. But it was just the relief. Do you know what I mean? Keep it all in. When you've got, when you're in a bad circumstance like that, it's like, right, I'm just going to try and focus on the fight and winning. And I didn't take in the other variables too much. And then when it was over, I was just like, oh, I've done it. Like, this is, this is good. Well, right away when I saw you, I go, dang, you got in some
Starting point is 00:07:31 shape this time, but again, I'm judging you off of what I saw in New York last time and you say you weren't in shape. But shit, you got abs now. Yep, and I'm still two 60, two 60. It looks like you weighed 245. I thought you might have lost 15. No, I've not lost, lost anyway. You weigh 260, but everything's just tight and ready to do. 55, 260, something like that. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. You fight Curtis Blades this weekend. Yeah. Can you take anything from the first fight in the first fight experience? I mean, because we're at, even though you guys didn't get to actually fight, you You stood across each other at the press conference. You stood across each other in the octagon.
Starting point is 00:08:03 You stood across each other at the way-ins. Can you take anything from that, those experiences and those moments in the fight that you can apply to this one? No, I don't think so. Like, I can take away from it. Curtis is a good guy. I like him a lot. That's all I can take away from it. Curtis is a good guy.
Starting point is 00:08:21 He's a respectful guy. I like him. I'm still going to try and punch a hole in his head on Saturday. That's the sport. I mean, he's going to do the same to me. And that's it. That wasn't really a fight, do you know what I mean? It's too short.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Too short. But just the experience, right? Like staring across the octagon from. There'll be some familiarity in that, right? Like seeing the same guy that you've been before. It's always kind of hard to think that this is the second fight between you guys. When you guys fought for, what, 30 seconds last time? Something like that.
Starting point is 00:08:47 This is actually my first rematch in my whole career, amateur or professional. Really? Yeah, never had a rematch before. So, yeah, I mean, I'm quite familiar around him and his team, the good people, the solid, solid people solid you know Curtis is a guy I've never said anything badly about his skill level he's been in the top five for the last five years you know what I mean the guy's really really good and Curtis is a really really solid opponent but I'm prepared for him he said that he was waiting for his moment even though he wasn't the first choice for this fight they said Cyril Gan got the call
Starting point is 00:09:19 I remember Cyril Gan no selling you and you went to Paris to fight him he no soul me big time he knows so bro and I was saying that you should know sell him like no I'm the man now you don't get an opportunity but then like Tom Aspenall you go I'd fight Cyril Gahn well I accepted it do you know what it's I'm a very very easy guy to persuade to having a fight with somebody yeah I think that all stuff aside and I think that you'll know this as well when you start to move up in levels of fighting and stuff you start to see other fighters around you and your peers and you think this guy maybe this guy is taking the fight for the money this guy is you know he's got he's
Starting point is 00:09:55 pushing his brand a little bit So he wants to have a big moment on the mic or whatever. What I love doing is I love putting a pair of gloves on, the other guy putting a pair of gloves on, taking our shirts off and getting an octagon in front of 25,000 people and seeing who the better man is. That's what I love doing. So for me to turn that down in my hometown, do you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:10:17 That's never going to happen. So they said they wanted me to fight Sirorgan. I said, yeah, cool, no problem. He didn't want to do it, so bring in blades. What are you expecting from Curtis? this week. A lot of wrestling. I mean,
Starting point is 00:10:28 he showed in the last fight, Jayotan Alameda was the one trying to wrestle him. Yeah. But you can wrestle yourself. Are you planning to wrestle offensively, too? If I need to. Do you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:10:39 Like I've, I know Curtis is a great wrestler, but I've been grappling since I was seven years old. Do you know what I mean? I've been grappling every day on my life since I was like seven, eight years old. So I'm happy to grapple as well if I need to.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Well, just, you know what I mean? You see how the fight goes. You get in there, you feel each other out. And, you know, sometimes I'll just throw in a Take the amount. Like, it's not even me thinking I'm going to throw in a takedown. My body, before I know it, I've got all of the legs and I'm on top of them. I'm like, oh, here I am. Let's see what happened. So we'll see. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:11:14 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:11:42 I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, the Clifford Show. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team.
Starting point is 00:13:18 And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. Starting point is 00:14:55 Welcome back, Game Time. We love you guys. We've missed you. Some people think that you are the future of this division, right? You seem like the guy that can bring stability to a division where at the top, it's in a bit of a weird place. So when you take it all in, right, when you look at the entire landscape of the division,
Starting point is 00:15:17 when you look at you and Curtis, and then Cyril is still in the mix, then you have Jones and Steepa over here, when you take in the whole landscape, what do you make it a heavyweight division right now? And how do you intend to get one of these guys to actually fight you? Well, right now, the heavyweight division
Starting point is 00:15:35 is in probably the best spot as being in for a while. Yeah, there's definitely a bit of a jam up at the top. You know, it's stuck a little bit. But as far as talent, there's some really, really talented guys in there. So as soon as John Jones decides what he's doing, like, is he even fighting steeper at this point? Well, I think they're going to fight in New York. That's what they say, but I don't see any contracts being signed
Starting point is 00:15:54 or anything announced. So we don't actually know. But right now, I'm just doing my thing, to be honest. Like Curtis Blades is a serious guy. He's a serious, serious opponent. And I feel like if you look past someone like him, you're in for a bad time. But there had to be joy in when you showed up to that deal
Starting point is 00:16:09 that he at least acknowledged you. you, right? Because Cyril didn't do that. Right? So at least like, because I want to see you guys fight. Yeah. Look, John Jones beat a lot of us when we were older. Right, I was the first time I fought him, I was 35. Yeah. He's 38 now. You're the young guy. I'd like to see him fight guys that are younger to see if that skill set still holds up. And I think that it would test you and him in ways
Starting point is 00:16:31 that would make for a fantastic fight. I think so too. And I think I actually match up really well with him. But we'll see. We'll see. We're sitting here talking about John Jones. You know a lot more about John Jones than I do. John Jones is a tricky guy, so we don't know what he's going to do. When he shows up to that cage, then he's as good as they come. Ultimately, getting him to that cage sometimes isn't as easy as him being there. Guys, Tom Aspinall fights Curtis Blaze this weekend,
Starting point is 00:16:56 defending an interim championship too. That's a little bit of a different situation. But hell, that's why we think you're the champion, because you're fighting, even if it says interim, this guy's the heavyweight champion of the world. He defends that belt this weekend. against Curtis Blades at UFC 304. Make sure you hit the buy button,
Starting point is 00:17:14 ESPN plus pay-per-view, and also go tap into what Tom's doing town. You got a YouTube channel anything yet? Yes, I do. All right, what's your YouTube channel? I was just going to plug it, actually, before you started cutting me off. This is Tom Aspen all official on YouTube.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Tom Aspen all official. People say, not me. There's not coming from my, people say, it's the best MMA content on YouTube. Well, that's bullshit. That's what people say. That's what people say. What people?
Starting point is 00:17:38 There's a lot of people. I know who. people in Manchester. Guys, Tom Aspinall defends his belt this weekend at UFC 304. Go to Tom Aspinall official. Instagram, X. You do Facebook?
Starting point is 00:17:54 I do Facebook. See, he doesn't even do. He's younger, right? The young guys don't do Facebook as much, but go follow Tom. Make sure you're tapping everything he's doing. He's a really good guy. Great heavyweight, great champion.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Again, ESPN Plus Pay-Pervue. Like, subscribe, and tell you friends about D.C.'s channel Because I got the heavyweight champion. on here. Tom Aspinall. Until next time, peace. Another podcast from some SNL, late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
