Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:00:16 breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:01:20 and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild. I mean, it was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all?
Starting point is 00:01:40 You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to, listen to learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the Hurt at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the IHartRadio app by searching Hurd. We're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. It is a Thursday jammed as always live in Los Angeles. This is The Hurt, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. We're on IHAR Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and right here, FS1. Shom Choranya, the Athletic, is going to be joining us in about 30 minutes to talk about the latest in the NBA. We're rolling. Baseball's closer. MLS coming back.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Dr. Fauci says we'll have no football, but I'm going to be honest with you. We're going to have football. Joy Taylor's joining me. How are you, Joy? I'm great. How are you? I am great. There's two words. I cringe when I hear people, Sam. Hypocrite and sellout. Everybody. I mean, you dig deep on all of us. We're all hypocrites. I mean, everybody says one thing and does another. and parents did this but don't want their kids to. I mean, if you dig deep enough, none of us are pure.
Starting point is 00:03:32 The other one is sellout. Man, you're a sellout. Whenever I hear somebody saying that, go examine their life. Somewhere in their life, they've been a sellout. Like Kevin Durant, called Kendrick Perkins a sellout yesterday. Kendrick Perkins played in the NBA for a long time. Good player, not great. And after a while, big guys don't matter anymore in the league,
Starting point is 00:03:53 especially if they can't shoot a three. Kendrick's career ends. He becomes a broadcaster. So is Kevin Durant calling him a sellout because he's a player-term broadcaster? Well, that's called a career. If you get forced out of the league at 36, what's a dude to do for 50 years?
Starting point is 00:04:10 Play golf? It's called a career. Is Barclay and Shaq? Are they sell-outs? I think it takes certain courage for former players. This is why Peyton Manning doesn't want to be a broadcaster because he doesn't want to go on the air and criticize people. He don't want to.
Starting point is 00:04:24 He knows the blowback. I think it takes courage to be Barclay, courage to be Shaq, and bang on players who are often friends. Barkley acknowledges Michael Jordan won't talk to him anymore. It's not easy being a player into a broadcaster. Every time Greg Jennings criticizes Aaron Rogers, he gets massive blowback from Packer Nation.
Starting point is 00:04:44 So I think Kendrick Perkins, there's a certain level of courage to criticize guys he played with. He knows he's getting blowback. Is Kevin Durant calling Kendrick Perkins is sellout because Perkins is criticizing Kyrie Irving because Perkins believes we should play, which would obviously benefit Kendrick Perkins because he could talk about actual games. But Kendrick's doing fine talking about non-games now. But is that why he's a sellout because Kyrie doesn't believe we should play.
Starting point is 00:05:13 He believes Black Lives Matter, the movement's far more important than games. Well, I can't criticize Kendrick for that because overwhelmingly, commissioner to star players, Everybody thinks the greatest platform for players is playing, not social media. So where's the sellout coming from? But there's two words, hypocrite and sellout. Be very careful using them. Because if you dig deep enough, we're all hypocrites on something and we're all sellouts on something. Kevin Durant was an utter sellout, wasn't he?
Starting point is 00:05:45 I'm going to look at what sellout means. So a sellout, according to the dictionary, a person who compromises integrity, talent, or the like for money or personal advancement, why did it go to Golden State? He gave up loyalty. It's much harder to win in Oklahoma City. It's much harder it's not an attractive place for free agents.
Starting point is 00:06:10 I mean, Westbrook is hard to win with, though, his style. When LeBron went to Miami, they hadn't recently. won titles. He had to build it. When Shaq came to L.A. I mean, it was just, they were building. They didn't even win with Del Harris. It took Phil Jackson. Steph and the Warriors had won without KD. He took the easiest route. I'm going to join a championship team and a Hall of Fame point guard. And the best backcourt shooting back court in the history of the league really is. I'm going to join them because it's easier to win championships here. Is that not the definition of sellout? wasn't that the knock
Starting point is 00:06:47 the old school guy said on Kevin Durant joining the Warriors? Dude, you're kind of a sellout. Be very careful. I hear this all the time in comedy. Dave Chappelle is not a sellout. He walked away from $50 million. Yes, he didn't. Then he walked into $20 million a Netflix special. He sold out. I think is what you'd call that walking in
Starting point is 00:07:11 to the biggest paycheck available for comedy, which he should because he's already funny. Taylor Swift is sell out. She was in country and then she's in pop. She had a number one hit in country at 19. She won at 19. She had a number one hit at 20. 21.
Starting point is 00:07:29 How long is she supposed to sing about dogs, Ford trucks, and whiskey? She evolved. She's an artist. She grew. I'm 24. Am I going to keep singing about the same stuff? Artists
Starting point is 00:07:44 grow, move on, bands grow, move, evolve, try new stuff. Kevin Durant's the last guy in the league that can call anybody a sellout, and I like him, and I think he's great. But what was the Oklahoma City to Golden State
Starting point is 00:08:00 move? It was the definition online, Google it, of sellout. Sacrificing loyalty for an easier path to titles, I defended him. I think that's what artists should do. I think that's what Taylor Swift should do after a number one hit at
Starting point is 00:08:19 19. I think it's what Dave Chappelle should do. Highest Bitter for his comedic genius. I think it's what Kevin Durant LeBron-Lebron D. Wade should do. Highest bitter. Why would I want to work harder and win less? I think it's just smart. But what's not smart is using the word sellout or hypocrite because you dig deep enough with all of us and it's there. beginning, middle, end of our life. We're all sellouts. We're all hypocrites. We're all looking for a certain payoff.
Starting point is 00:08:50 It may be love. It may be sex. It may be money. It may be titles. It may be stuff. It may be houses. It may be relationships. We're all looking to elevate.
Starting point is 00:08:59 We all should be looking to elevate. Kendrick Perkins got bounced out of the league because he's a big guy who doesn't shoot. And the lead, that's not a job in the NBA anymore. And he was old. And he couldn't score. What's he supposed to do? I think there's actual courage when broadcasters are former players
Starting point is 00:09:18 and have to criticize dudes they played with. It's not easy. You get a ton of heat. And I think his opinions on Kyrie Irving are the overwhelming smart sentiment by everybody. Players playing, Kaepernick kneeling in a stadium, is of your most significance and value. All right. So sometimes, let me segue way to football.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Sometimes the media thinks it's helping a cause and it's actually hurting a cause. I've told friends this about the media and Trump. The media thinks it's really getting Trump. And I'm like, I'm not sure. I actually think by attacking him daily, he gains to some people some sympathy. Maybe not me, but to some people. His base, his followers now hate the media more. than they like Trump, and they just may vote for him if the economy turns.
Starting point is 00:10:15 And I'm seeing this with the media and Colin Kaepernick. They want him to play. It's a good story. The media always roots for stories. Kaepernick and the NFL is a good story. But are you helping his cause when the coach of the Chargers just says, yeah, I'd consider if we needed a quarterback putting him on a workout list. And as I drove to work this morning, two radio stations.
Starting point is 00:10:38 That's their leading story. not making the team, not getting a tryout. Anthony Lynn, his headlines all over America, just said this yesterday. That's something that's probably on the workout list. I haven't spoken with Colin, not sure where he's at as far as in his career, what he want to do. But Colin definitely fits the style of quarterback
Starting point is 00:11:03 for the system that we're going to be running. and I'm very confident and happy with the three quarterbacks that I have. But you can never have too many people waiting on the runway. He's not taken off. He just on the tarmac. He didn't even say I've got two quarterbacks. He said, I like the three I have. And that is headlines and talk radio fodder.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Folks, cab's not viewed as a starter. He's not. He's viewed as a backup. There is no position in the NFL for a, celebrity backup. That's why the window, the market for Cam is tiny. James Winston's not a celebrity. You could argue Cam's better than James, I think so, but Cam's a celebrity. And there's not a real position in the NFL for a celebrity backup quarterback. And in fact, let me tell you, the Chargers are one of nine teams I know are not going to go after Kaepernick. There's nine teams in the
Starting point is 00:12:00 NFL have really young quarterbacks. They are all in on that quarterback. They don't want any press conference about any quarterback except that guy. The Jets with Darnold, Buffalo Josh Allen, Chargers Herbert, Sincere Joe Burrell, Miami-Toole, Washington, Dwayne Haskins, Giants Daniel Jones, Denver Drew Locke, Arizona, and Tyler Murray. Those teams have no interest holding a press conference for the backup of a young quarterback. So just take those nine off the board. Just think about, because I do think there's room for Kaepernick. but just think about the Kaepernick either press conferences or days he would dominate the discussion.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Just think about this. So you announce Cap's getting a workout. Okay. I assure you every reporter in town is going to ask about that. So the Cap getting a workout owns your town for a day. Then a week later, Cap works out. How did it look? Look, that's a press conference or a media jam.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Then there is, two weeks later, the Kaepernick will he make the team? That's a big deal. Is he going to make the team? There'll be a hundred stories written on it. Then there'll be he makes the team. Now we're four press conferences in. Season hasn't started. Then there'll be, what's his relationship with the quarterback?
Starting point is 00:13:25 Does he have a chance to start? That will happen after a while. Then there will be the questions press conference or stuff asked about, are he going to put in special packages for him. I mean, he is a special quarterback. Then there will eventually be the, how's he fit in the locker room stuff, human interest story? Then there will be November election. Let's ask Cap about Donald Trump. I'm nine either press conferences in. That's what teams don't want. The best thing for Kaepernick is, teams feel they can bring him in as a press conference for it. And then you go and talk about the starting quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:14:02 back. So I'd take nine teams just out. I mean, the Chargers, they got Justin Herbert, Tua, Joe Burrow, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen. These guys, they haven't even mastered the craft yet. We're not even sure all of them are going to make it yet. You could argue Cleveland and Baker Mayfield's also in this class. I can make it 10 teams. A third of the league's like, no, no, no, no, all the questions about him, the focus on him, the coaching about him. So take a third of the league out. the more the media thinks they're helping Cap, I think they're hurting him. The fact that a coach said, you know, if I needed a quarterback, I'd work him out. Is that a story?
Starting point is 00:14:45 Really? Is that for days? Headlines. The media. If Cap's going to make it, it's going to be as a backup. There's probably a spot. But sometimes I think the media whiffs on this. They think they're grooving it for you.
Starting point is 00:15:01 and they're actually creating a little bit of a circus. I don't even think Cap, frankly, if he made the team, he wouldn't want all the press conferences. You'd want to make the team get paid and play. I don't think Cap is seeking the publicity cap would garner. There's a spot for him in the league, but let's add context. Right now in his career, he is viewed out of the league for three and a half years as a backup. You can't have nine press conferences, nine gatherings,
Starting point is 00:15:31 for a backup. That's not an attractive spot for NFL teams, especially with NFL teams, 10 of them in the NFL with quarterbacks. They think could be the franchise, but they're not even sure right now. And that includes the guy I like Sam Darnold. We're not quite sure yet. Bad year? Maybe I'm wrong. Good year for Baker. Maybe I'm wrong again. All right. Officially, Joy and I have joked about the DAC Prescott contract. It has been discussed for 18 months. I'm officially over it. So I thought this morning, there's a story out. Jay Glazer said it's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:16:01 And I thought about this, Joy. I thought, okay, instead of opinions, what if there was a metric that you could determine exactly what he would get paid based on four factors winning, winning in the playoffs, productivity, and durability? I don't want opinions. I'm going to pay you a lot of money, right? I'm not going to pay you on opinions. I'm not going to pay you on opinions. If join I go for renegotiations, it's not about opinions. How are the ratings? What's the momentum? How is our digital? How is that?
Starting point is 00:16:34 So I created a metric for Dak Prescott. A metric that is inarguable. Wins, productivity, playoff performance, durability. I don't want opinions, just data. And I'll tell you how much he should be paid and where he should be paid. It's kind of interesting who he's compared to coming up now. One more herd. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.

Starting point is 00:18:21 Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to The Cliverts Show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out,
Starting point is 00:18:40 help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself.

Starting point is 00:19:20 Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit. This is help from a hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to a deeply well with Debbie Brown from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. It's good to have you back. I saw a story
Starting point is 00:20:38 yesterday about Dak Prescott. I am over talking about his contract. One month, four weeks from basically this week, you have to sign your players. If not, that's the deadline to sign a franchise player, four weeks from, you know, like yesterday. So if you don't, you can't negotiate by rule until the season ends. So, Dak and the Cowboys, they're going to get this thing figured out. In a season of a lot of uncertainty, they want certainty with Dak.
Starting point is 00:21:04 They're going to sign him. And so I thought to myself, you know, instead of just opinion, let's just talk data. Let's take the emotion out of it. Well, his offensive line is good. Jason Garrett wasn't that good. You know, he dealt with Des.
Starting point is 00:21:18 You know, he's a good leader. I want stuff I can quantify. So four things matter to me, but one more than any. Wins should be 50% of it. Why? Well, playoff wins, productivity, and durability. I'll give 16%. All 16% wins 50%. Why? You can start and be durable. If you're not winning football games, I'm not giving you a lot of money. The reason I'm going to give Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes money, they win a bunch of games.
Starting point is 00:21:47 That's why Aaron Rogers is rich and Russell Wilson's rich. Well, well, I'm productive. Again, a lot of guys throw for a lot of yards. Eli threw for a lot of yards. But the last four years, productivity didn't equal wins. I'm not interested. Well, well, playoff win. You can't get to the playoff without winning. Winning is why guys get rich. It's not just playoff wins.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Andy Dalton made a lot of money for a lot of years because he kept getting to the playoffs. Didn't matter if he won. If a quarterback gets to the playoffs, you're going to get paid. So wins is 50% of your salary. And then I'll give an equal benefit to playoff wins. Let's be honest. You're playing the best teams and the best coaches. Bill Parcells has struggled in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Bill Belichick just got bounced out. Andy Reid for years struggled in the playoffs. I'm not going to crush you. I mean, Jared Goff, I'd pay. He wins games. Playoff wins. Peyton Manning for a decade struggled to win in the playoffs, but he won.
Starting point is 00:22:51 So, wins is half of what I'm paying you for. then three categories. Are you there? Durability? Are you productive? And do you win in the playoffs? 16% each.
Starting point is 00:23:03 So where does DAC rank? So wins, he's 10th. Now, he did minimum number of starts. He is 10th in the NFL in winning percentage, last four years. Playoff wins. He's tied for 13th. I'm not going to crush him for that. Maybe Jason Garrett's not as good as the coaches he's lost to.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Productivity, he's 13th. But again, I can't crush a guy. What if you have a great running back? Oh, they do. So they run the football first. I can't say I'm going to be punitively against you because they drafted Zee. Availability. It matters.
Starting point is 00:23:38 He's tied for first. But if you missed a game or two every year and you were Patrick Mahomes, I would still pay you. So now, those are his ranks. Okay. So if you add them all together. his official rank with those four is 9.5. He should be paid somewhere between the ninth and 10th highest paid quarterback in the league. And he should be paid $29.5 million.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And that quarterback is Ryan Tannahill. Isn't that a pretty decent comp? I mean, Ryan's talented. Ryan got to the AFC championship. Tannale wins some games, but we don't think he's a special arm or a special athlete. But he's way above average as an athlete. and he makes a lot of good throws, but really both need a strong running game and protection to be special.
Starting point is 00:24:35 So 29.5 million. So if you're wondering why the cowboys are taking a while, they probably have similar metrics, which is telling you that's his value. So are we going to go 37 million? This is why it's difficult, because he's obviously going to get more than $29.5 million. dollars. But if you took out the opinion and just went wins or half of it, productivity,
Starting point is 00:25:01 playoff wins, durability, each get a little over 15%. It's about where he ranks. And that's why these contract negotiations are taking a while. Joy Taylor with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. It's very good, Colin. It makes a lot sense, right? Yeah. I mean, I like Doc Prescott a lot more than Ryan Tandahill, obviously. but at this point in his career, I feel like that's a reasonable calm. It's a reasonable evaluation. I think Dak Prescott's ceiling is much higher than Ryan Tannahill, especially now with Mike McCarthy and, you know, I think moving forward,
Starting point is 00:25:37 he's going to have a whole lot more success than Ryan Tannahill did. But that's fair. You like my formula. Yeah, the formula is fair. Formula is fair. And those are the reasons why I like Dak, Prescott. Like, they just paid Ryan Tannahill. A lot of people felt like that they should have paid Derek Henry first, myself included.
Starting point is 00:25:53 But Ryan Tanyl earned a contract. you're on the contract he has right now. He didn't get them there, but he was the quarterback for them and they're in the AFC championship game. So the Bears are gearing up for their quarterback competition between Mitchell Chubisky and Nick Foles. And new quarterbacks coach, John DiFilippo, is looking for a little something extra
Starting point is 00:26:12 from whoever wins the starting job this year. Playing with juice. Yeah. Passion energy and swagger, baby. That's what we're defined as in our room. Passion. We have a passion for the game. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:24 We have a ton of energy. We're the same people every day. And then we walk around with a little bit of swagger to ourselves in terms of we know, okay, that we're the best quarterback room in the National Football League. And it doesn't mean that we go around and we're cocky and arrogant and doesn't mean that doesn't mean that at all. It just means that we have a swagger about ourselves that, you know, the only people that can that can beat us if we beat ourselves. Passion, energy and swagger, baby. That doesn't say Trubisky.
Starting point is 00:26:50 I don't know I would describe Nick Foles that way either. Actually, I think Trubisky has a good amount of energy to him. When he's winning, he's got a little energy to him. It bothered me with Chicago last year. Kaleel Mack didn't have a great year. And that tells me Kaleel Mack was frustrated, knowing that he had to play. Whenever I see a great defensive player, after playing with a quarterback for a couple of years, not somewhat devolve or erode, it tells me, because it's hard to rush the passer.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Defense is all about effort. Offense is a lot about choreography and effort. I think in the locker room, you can't fool players. No, there was absolutely some frustration in Chicago last year with their quarterback situation. Now, again, everything that we've heard is that everybody likes him, but, you know, nice only goes so far. Everybody likes Andy Dalton. Yeah, nice is wonderful. Like, try your best to be nice.
Starting point is 00:27:46 But when we're competing, mostly be competence. And the nice thing is like the second thing I'm looking for. is for church. You really sit next to somebody at church you like. I mean, I'm not saying to be a jerk, but like, you don't have to be the nicest if you are the most competent. Dan Marino chewed out a lot of dudes. A lot.
Starting point is 00:28:05 Troy Akeman, Troy Akeman, chewed out a lot of dudes. But the winning part is what matters to the end of day. Elway was not easy. They will forgive you. Yeah. Peyton Manning. We just, well, some will forgive you. We just watched the last dance.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Not everybody's over. But for the most part, winning cures all of it. I like the idea. idea that he has. You know, you want your guy to be confident. I agree. That's why I don't, I don't like quarterback competitions because it's hard to pick the guy. And when you have a quarterback competition and you pick the guy, he doesn't end up being great. You are eventually going to switch to the other one. So it just makes it difficult to completely buy in. So more Tua recovery news. Tua made the move down to South Florida this week because he is rehabbing an injury.
Starting point is 00:28:46 He's allowed to receive treatment at the Dolphins facility. And according to Ian Rappaport, But after getting him in the building, the Miami training staff believes he is all systems go. Here we go. So we have a miraculous recovery. Amazing. All systems go. I am so excited for this story. Me too.
Starting point is 00:29:03 This is so excited for the two are stories. Obviously. I think, look, again, I'm going to be cautiously optimistic. That is where I am right now. I've seen many years of the dolphins. I do feel like this is a new wave. I like Ryan Flores. I like the direction of it.
Starting point is 00:29:20 teams going in. I like that they didn't have to give up a bunch of pieces to get the guy that they clearly wanted because Herbert were still on the board. I don't love the injuries, but I'm very optimistic about everything else. They're saying he's turning in the right direction. That's all you want to hear. Like that's what you want to hear anyway. I do think it's miraculous is kind of a dramatic word to place on it. But who knows? Maybe maybe it, I mean, if he is able to start week one, you kind of would call that a miraculous recovery. I mean, that's a tremendous turnaround from a very catastrophic injury. So we'll see. We'll see it. So Dwayne Haskins had a tough rookie season, but going into year two, he's confidence that he's going to prove he is the guy in Washington.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Let me face of the franchise and work and be that in. I just wanted to be a man about my business, and that's just on and off field. And not that I wasn't prior to, but now turning 23, still being young, still growing, and I just wanted to, whatever the word question about immaturity or lack of whatever it was. I was going to change that, whether it was true or not. but I just for myself because I needed to do that for me. So I applied pressure with everything I did this all season as far as in my body, how I study all that stuff, and that's just making a big difference. By the way, he now has a great defensive coach and with Chase Young a great defensive line.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Here's the good news. He's not going to be in shootouts this year. Washington's defense is going to get really good. And so you're not going to need him to throw 30 times a game. There's a feeling that if you get him an offensive coach, that's the key. I would make the argument. If you look at Washington's defensive personnel up front, which is great, this is perfect for him. Efficiency, ball control is how Ron Rivera wins.
Starting point is 00:30:58 Ron Rivera may end up really saving what could end up being a whiff pick. Ron's going to keep these games into the low 20s, so I don't need him to save my team. They run the ball pretty well and they got a great pass run. No, you just need him to not be terrible. You need him to not go out there and turn the ball. over a tremendous amount. You need him to be to take a step up and be mostly efficient because that is also going to relieve your defense and make that great defense even more effective, right? Like we don't think Tampa Bay's defense is terrible, but with all the turnovers last
Starting point is 00:31:33 year with James Winston, it's impossible to evaluate. They're always on the field. So I'm, this is another story I'm just watching. I don't want to make any predictions. I like what I'm hearing from Dwayne Haskins. He also stepped up his individual conditioning. He loved lost 10 pounds, got a new dietary plan. So he's taking the necessary steps to develop from year one to year two. And they're in a great position anyway, because as you said, they're building up their defense. If it turns out he's not the guy, you'll have another high traffic and a good opportunity to get the guy. So you're not in a bad situation.
Starting point is 00:32:05 By the way, there's only about three more desperate quarterback franchises, maybe four that'll be up in the top five picks. If he's bad, you're going to have one of the spots. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. Sham Chironia is a great young NBA reporter, senior NBA insider for the Athletic and Stadium. He has been breaking all sorts of stories over the last month.
Starting point is 00:32:30 He is joining us now via the Coward Global Satellite Network brought to you by Mercedes-Benz the best or nothing. All right, so Kevin Durant called Kendrick Perkins a sellout for criticizing Kyrie Irving. Kyrie Irving is we shouldn't play the season. So you talk to players. There's, you know, there's hundreds of them on calls. how many players do you believe, and I'm sure it's substantial, agree with Kyrie in that even though the platform is greater to play, it's not the right time to play? I mean, Colin, you had at least 85 players at one point on that call on Friday that were at least considering sitting out because of the same reasons as Kyrie Irving.
Starting point is 00:33:07 They wanted to hear from him, his voice, hear from other star players. You know, on that call Friday, as I reported, you had Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook. Joel M. Bede, you had a lot of big-name players, and there were at least 85 guys that were at least enchanted by Kyrie Irving's words and his movement to the point where they want to get on that call. And at the end of the day, Colin, the NBA, Adam Silver, the MVPA has made it clear it's on each individual player to make his own decision. Everyone is entitled to the own opinion. So who am I, who are you, who is anyone to judge the way Kyrie Irving wants to feel about social justice, social reform.
Starting point is 00:33:46 And that's how the, that's the NBA's approach. There won't be a penalty. All players are expected to be given a June 24th deadline to give their decision to teams. And, and, and my sense is that there is a majority of players that do want to play. There's a faction of guys that feel just like Kyrie, you know, you have Avery Bradley, Dwight Howard, players like that, they're also part of this so-called movement. Then you'll have another group of players that will potentially sit out. just based on what's going on in the country as well as the coronavirus pandemic and their own
Starting point is 00:34:18 personal lives. I know a couple of players that are dealing with family illnesses and they're going to have to deal with that and have to figure out whether we play or not. Yeah, let's talk about that. June 24th, you have to announce here pretty quick. I'm out. You probably wouldn't get a ton of pushback from other players, maybe unless you were a star on a great team. Do you see a star or high level player or two pulling out? I can't say for a matter of fact, but there are several notable, you know, high level rotation players that are at least considering our, you know, their situation in these next, you know, in the next week to two weeks. And listen, at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:35:03 if a player, if a star player on a team wants to decide and wants to make his decision before the teams leave to Orlando, which will be July 7 to 9, I'm sure they'll be given that option. but, you know, a lot of players are still trying to get clarity. Like, when is that real last drop that date that I can make a decision? Will it really be June 24th? But listen, all these guys, they have their own separate decisions to make. I still believe a majority of players do want to play. Okay, so you broke the story.
Starting point is 00:35:32 I looked at your stuff on the facilities and where they're going to play. I mean, it's a big tournament. I mean, it's got a World Cup, Indoor's World Cup field to it. From where you see they're playing, how would you describe there's going to be no fans? I mean, what does it look like to you going forward? It's going to be, I mean, it's a glorified AU tournament for up to three and a half, four months for the champion team. And it's, it's restrictive, Colin. It's closed off.
Starting point is 00:36:05 The quarantine restrictions are tough because if you do test positive, you're out 10 to 14 days. Chris Paul has said it, I'm told on MVPA calls. it's basically going to be treated like an injury. And if you leave the campus, the penalties are going to be severe as well, 10 to 14 days of quarantine. You have enhanced nasal swab testing, which I'm told these players do not want. And so you have those two things and the reduction of salary. So you're going to be penalized if you leave the bubble.
Starting point is 00:36:32 And so how much leniency will the NBA give these players once they actually are settled in that environment and actually are in that setting? That's what will be the most interesting to watch. By the way, LeBron's been fairly quiet for the last two weeks. He's done some social media stuff, but we've heard from Kyrie. We've heard from Avery Bradley. We've heard from Dwight Howard. Is LeBron working behind the scenes with Adam Silver?
Starting point is 00:36:59 That's my hunch, is that Adam and LeBron understand what would happen to the cap. What would happen to the CBA? If players elected not to go, it could be devastating. for the next CBA. We haven't heard a ton from LeBron. What do I take from that? You can take from that that LeBron James wants to play. And he's had his private conversations with Adam Silver,
Starting point is 00:37:25 as have other star players in the league. And he's made his position known, wants to play, and feels like they can use that platform, that setting to really thrive. And not only use it as far as performance, but use that as a social injustice platform for them to continue to spread their message. And I'm told the NBA, the players are still trying to figure out a way and multiple ways that they can affect change across the country.
Starting point is 00:37:52 And that's the side that LeBron James falls on is he believes that the players are better suited playing in games and competing. Now, Adam Silver said a couple of months ago, he said, listen, we're not built for a multi-year pandemic. This is not good for anybody, but it could be really punitive to players. Do you believe if they get through this that it will absolutely change next season and will have a new NBA that starts on Christmas and ends in early August? I don't think the NBA's goals for this to be a permanent thing,
Starting point is 00:38:24 as much as fans would love for every season to begin on Christmas Day. I do think the NBA wants to knock out an 82 games schedule next season, but the goal at some point is to return back to the old schedule, which obviously, you know, you have games starting in October, finishing up in June. That is what the NBA, I'm told, is hopeful to return to, but I don't know how long it will take. Will it take a month, a year? Will it take two years? That is up in the air. And also the start date for 2020, 21 is still up in the air. The players do not want to do December 1. Will they settle on December 25th? These are all questions that remain to be seen. All right. Asham Sharanaa does a great job for the athletic in the stadium. Finally, we're going to have a season, right?
Starting point is 00:39:05 Like there's no chance from this point forward, there's a pullback. We're going to have an NBA season, right? So, Colin, this is the analogy I've made. The boat is going. They're going to Orlando. If players want to get off, they can get back in the water, and they can go. But this boat is going, and it's going to Orlando. And the NBA, the NBPA have agreed upon these protocols, the health and safety packet,
Starting point is 00:39:32 the 113-page packet that I reported on the other day. And that was probably the biggest condition that they had to resolve. And they resolved it. And the 22 team formats resolved. So all systems go, you know, this pandemic has shown me, and I'm sure shown you, Colin, that anything is possible. But barring any unforeseen movement, the NBA, the NBA are moving forward here. All right, Shams, great stuff. Great update for us.
Starting point is 00:39:57 That's good news. We miss sports. Good talking to you. Thank you so much. Thanks, Colin. All right. A couple different things. Really interesting list.
Starting point is 00:40:06 He's a talk show host out east, a talk show host guy, and he came out with a list about the best divisions for quarterbacks. And what's really interesting is not the top of the list. It's how little he thinks of a quarterback in the bottom of a list. And it's fascinating. I think we have a really talented quarterback, and we just haven't figured it out yet. That plus, people are ticked. Cam got criticized by Carolina fans, and people aren't happy next to Hurt.

Starting point is 00:43:17 Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian.
Starting point is 00:43:28 And recently, I've become... quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions.
Starting point is 00:43:41 Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you,
Starting point is 00:43:54 even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream of chicken suit. Hey, cream, cream a chicken soup. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Coulthura podcast network available on the I-HartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Summer's here. It's time to spend more time with your family. To me, that means grilling. To me, that means a rec-tech grill.
Starting point is 00:44:25 rec tech grills with an S.com R-E-C-T-E-C-Grills with an S.com built by grillers for grillers. Outstanding. So Carolina Panthers were trying to kind of create some, what do they call it, social engagement yesterday on Twitter. Just get fans. I mean, got no games.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Just tried to get their fans all worked up. So they went to Twitter. And it was innocent enough. They said, okay, we're going to do, who's the all-time goat? of Carolina. And it was Julius Peppers. It was Steve Smith, Jr. And then it was Luke Keekley. Everybody freaked out. And what about Cam? Okay, folks, let me lay this out without opinion. Julius Peppers is fourth all-time in Sacks. He's a nine-time pro bowler. He's one of the great pass rushers ever. He is a first ballot hall of famer. Luke Keekley outstead.
Starting point is 00:45:25 side of his rookie year was a pro bowler every year. After his rookie year, he was the best linebacker in football for the next six to seven years. He led the NFL in tackles twice. Steve Smith is eighth all-time in yards.
Starting point is 00:45:43 He would get my Hall of Fame vote. So a first ballot Hall of Fame or Julius Peppers, a first or second ballot Hall of Fame or Luke Keeckley, and a guy, Steve Smith Sr., I would vote into the Hall of Fame. The best skill player that the franchise ever had by a mile. Cam Newton's not going to get a Hall of Fame vote.
Starting point is 00:46:06 He's not going to get a vote. Cam Newton has a 59% career completion percentage and a passer rating of 86, lower than Andy Dalton, Marcus Marriota, and James Winston, all now backups. There's no market for him. That's not my opinion. There's no market for him currently. There's a market for Andy, James, Marks, Marks. There's not even a market for Camas a backup.
Starting point is 00:46:28 I've never seen a player in my life. Well, he won an MVP. Folks, Justin Mourneau, the twins won an MVP. People have lightning in a bottle of years. There's Ken O'Brien. There's Justin Mourneau. We've had good players. So-So-so players have unbelievable years.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Brady Anderson wants it 50 home runs. Out of the blue for the Baltimore Orioles. So-so players have great years. Doesn't mean you're an all-time player. Carolina was just trying to create social engagement. This wasn't a shot at anybody. For the record, Cam's no longer on the franchise. So maybe they forgot about it.
Starting point is 00:47:08 But Julius Pepper, Steve Smith and Luke Keeckley are Hall of Fame players. I'm not sure any reasonable Hall of Fame voter could give Cam a vote. He was an MVP. Since then, he's 500. It wasn't a shot at anybody. All right. I thought this was good. So yesterday I saw somebody last night, and I've been saying the entire time, we're going to get baseball.
Starting point is 00:47:35 All this stuff is just, remember, Rob Manfred's history, he majored at Cornell in labor negotiations. This stuff's going public because baseball's always had a very tenuous relationship between the league and the owners and the players. baseball had a strike in the 70s. It had a strike in the 80s. It had a strike in 94. It almost had a strike in 2002. Manfred wasn't around. Every commissioner deals with strikes.
Starting point is 00:48:05 So that's why the owners are now just hiring labor lawyers. That's what Rob Manfred is. What do labor lawyers do? You ever see like lawyers on the steps when they get a client? This is outrageous. My client, this claim it. That's what lawyers do. Muddy the wall.
Starting point is 00:48:25 waters up. This is outrageous. They leak stuff so it gets out and curries favor with the public. All this stuff with Rob Manfred, all this stuff getting out has all been about getting what the owners want. Now, here's the good news for the players. The owners have now conceded the DH. Both leagues will use it. That's a really good win for the players. That means one more job every team for an actual baseball player. No more pitchers hitting. That's not a small win for the players. That's a great win for the players because they're going to use it now and next negotiation. It's all DHS, which is the way it should be. I mean, you wouldn't have full backs in the AFC, no full backs in the NFC. Like, we're going to have D.H. The second thing the players got yesterday was full
Starting point is 00:49:14 prorated salaries. So the players are going to lose 60% of their money, but they're going to get full prorated salaries. It's a huge win for the players. All, the owners want is closer to 60 games than 70 because they don't want to play in November. We've all watched baseball in November. It's bad, right? It's really cold. Let me give you the teams that are supposed to be playoff teams in baseball this year. Listen to the cities. New York, Yankees, Washington Nationals, Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, November. Hmm. Wind, cold, rain, sleet, snow. Owners just don't want to play baseball.
Starting point is 00:49:52 baseball. So players, you got the DH. You got the full pro-rated salaries. You're already losing 60% of your money. Agree. Now, this is where I'm pro-owner. Don't worry about 70 games. Play 60, Crest out, have a season. Hour 2 next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Starting point is 00:53:52 we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. It is great to have you in. Joy Taylor is joining me. You know, Joy, I was thinking about this yesterday. What were you thinking about? And I'm not sure if it's just a guy thing, but I'll speak for men. Men struggle to admit they're wrong. It's why I struggle to watch cable news,
Starting point is 00:54:11 either Sean Hannity or Rachel Maddow. Has either of them ever gone on the air and said, I was Ty Whiffed on that? Well, I mean, we have a whole segment on the show where you say you're wrong. And the reason I have that, it's my highest rated segment every week, is to, I think I buy credibility with the audience admitting four or five times. Like, I just whiffed on that. Nobody in politics ever just admits.
Starting point is 00:54:33 Yeah, I just, I just whiffed. I mean, I like Rachel Maddow, but God, she went a year on the Russia thing, you know, Trump thing. It was a whiff. It's okay. It's okay. Sean's been wrong. It's okay. Instead of digging deeper, nobody in politics,
Starting point is 00:54:50 No political punnant ever says totally wrong. They just dig deeper. I'm not into that. Like, I don't have any interest digging deeper to prove I'm right, tweaking numbers to prove I'm constantly right. Sometimes I'm wrong. And the other day I was driving home and I thought, God, if I looked at my life, how many mulligans could I take in life?
Starting point is 00:55:13 And I started thinking about my life and thinking, oh, God, I'd like a mulligan here. Business, career, family, how many mulligans? And I got to about 15 driving home. the other day. I was just thinking, because I was going to go golf and I was thinking about, and I thought, God, if my life had mulligans, how many would I take? Like, ooh, bad decision. Oh, I wasn't nice there. And just off the top of my head, I got to about 14, 15, and then I got discouraging and I quit because I was like 28 and I had 15. And so, it's okay to just acknowledge you're wrong. And that's going to get me into this.
Starting point is 00:55:43 That Adam Shine is a talk show host. I see him sometimes on digital stuff, very popular. and he also does some writing for NFL.com. And he wrote, you know, we're getting into the list. We're trying to, you know, let's be honest, we don't have games. So every day I find a list and we just talk about it. And this is my list of the day. I think it's interesting. So he says, let's rank based on my projections for this year,
Starting point is 00:56:07 divisions based on quarterback play. And I think he mostly nails it. He said the NFC South has the best quarterbacks. I think it's the best quarterback division I've ever seen. Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Brees, Brady. There's no C there. Nobody's going to argue. His second is the NFC West.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Kyler Murray, Jared Goff, Jimmy G. Russell Wilson. Nobody's going to argue. Then it's a bunch of, he likes Drew Locke like I do, so he has the AFC West third. But I'm not going to argue. Let's go to the bottom of the list. And this to me is more interesting. And I'm not sure if he intended this to be interesting. But he has the NFC East last with Dak, Daniel Jones, Carson, and Wentz, and Dwayne Haskin.
Starting point is 00:56:46 So we would all agree, Dwayne Haskins, work in prime. progress. We're all going to agree Carson Wentz is really good. We all think DAC deserves a contract. What he's telling you is he thinks Daniel Jones is no good. And in fact, he says Adam, Shine says, the jury's out. He goes, by the end of the coming season, if you stack all the quarterbacks in the last two divisions, and those would be Josh Allen, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jared Stidham, Sam Darnold, Dak, Daniel Carson, and Dwayne Askins, he says, Daniel Jones is going to be seventh. Now, so I thought to myself, that doesn't feel right for me.
Starting point is 00:57:26 So now let me acknowledge that I was wrong on Daniel Jones. I could not believe he got picked sex. I watched him at college at Duke. I don't watch a lot of Duke football. But his coach at Duke, David Cutcliffe, is really good. And I thought Daniel Jones was really average. He reminded me a lot of a little bit less talented Alex Smith. he's got good running straight line speed.
Starting point is 00:57:50 Not a great athlete, but a good athlete. You get him on the outside. He can move. He's got a good arm like Alex Smith, not great. And he went to Duke, so I know he has to be smart. I applied there and didn't get in. So he reminded me of Alex Smith. That's not the number six pick in the draft.
Starting point is 00:58:03 I like Alex, but I thought to myself, well, he got over drafted. And Dave Gettleman to me, I've always been a little. I'm warming, but eh, not very good in a microphone. So I want to throw something out to you on Daniel Jones. Just think about this. So let's look at four things as a rookie. How many games he start, 12? Completion percentage, 62.
Starting point is 00:58:24 Passer rating, 87, almost 88, and 2 to 1 touch that interception ratio, 2412. That's a rookie. Now remember this. Let's add context. That's what a bad old line and a bad coach? Bad. No number one receiver and Saquan Barkley was hurt a lot.
Starting point is 00:58:41 So now come back to me. Now I want to, now this is something I believe in life, is that if you take out the best and worst of somebody, if you took out Cam Newton's worst season and Cam Newton's MVP season, that's really what he is. If you take out Matt Ryan's MVP season and his rookie season, that's what he really is. Even a realtor, first year you're a realtor,
Starting point is 00:59:02 you're building up your clientele, you don't sell any homes. You're a realtor for 15 years. And then one year, the economy goes up and you sell an $8 million home. It skews the numbers. So as a realtor, take out your worst year. and take out your best year. The remaining 13 years of 15, that's what you are as a realtor. Everybody sells one big home and everybody has a, maybe you got a flu.
Starting point is 00:59:24 Maybe you had a death in the family. Maybe you had to quit for a couple of months because of personal reasons. Take out best and worst. So if you look at Daniel Jones 12 stars, I'm just going to play with one. Take out one stinker. And it's not any stinker. Who is the coach in the NFL? Who's the best coach in football history?
Starting point is 00:59:44 Bill Ballicheck. Who is the coach in NFL history that has destroyed rookie quarterbacks? Bill Belichick. Where's the toughest place to play in the NFL last 15 years? New England? So on a Thursday night short week against the greatest coach ever in Foxborough, Rainy Cold, he didn't have Sequin Barkley, Evan Ingram, or Sterling Shepard. On a short week in New England against Tom Brady, that defense, Belichick, and the Patriots.
Starting point is 01:00:13 I'm taking it out. No rookie quarterback could have flourished there. Peyton Manning couldn't have, Brady couldn't have, Russell Wilson couldn't have. He didn't have Barclay, Ingram, Stirling, battle line, bad coach, on the road, short week, Belichick, pressure, television, take that one out. Now look at Daniel Jones. Rookie year. 11 starts, 63% completion percentage, 91.5 passer rating, 23 touchdowns, nine picks. Folks, he is a, he's a baller.
Starting point is 01:00:45 I was wrong. Kid can play. Joe Burrow gets those numbers. All you palm-pom-waven fanboys are going to be on my arse all year. Those are grown-up numbers. Bad coach, bad O'Line, no number one receiver.
Starting point is 01:01:04 Sequin Hurd, Ingram Out, take out the New England game. Dude can ball. I was totally wrong. Dude can play. So Adam Schein, I loved it. It got me through 10 minutes, but I think we have to reevaluate Daniel Jones. I think we've got a real player here.
Starting point is 01:01:27 I think his arm is stronger than Alex Smith. I think he had a great college coach. And even with Pat Schumer, who failed as a head coach, take out a stinker. Those are real numbers. Joe Burrow gets those. He will win rookie of the year. If Joe Burrow gets those numbers, he will win rookie of the year. and I'm not sure the Giants personnel-wise are that much better than the Bengals.
Starting point is 01:01:52 The Giants are a hell of a lot closer to the Bengals than Cleveland's roster. That's all I know. I'm not even sure if I want to do my next thing. I was so good on that. I mean, seriously, I don't even know what more do you want. I mean, that is fair, though. It's an impossible task to go into New England on Thursday. I mean, if you have an average game, that's an accomplishment as a rookie against Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 01:02:15 Yeah, I mean, we have to be honest. Like, whenever you start a new show, take out the first show. You ever notice media critics come out? Well, that show what? You never judge somebody in the first couple of shows. Give somebody six weeks to have a show, right? Anytime there's like a new sitcom or anything, it's always like, well, the first sitcom, what? Did you ever watch Seinfeld the first year?
Starting point is 01:02:35 Did you ever watch everybody loves Raymond? They almost took it off the air. Now, I will say, I do think we're not going to see the full blossom of Daniel Jones until next year, because he is dealing with a new coach and a new coordinator this year and a pandemic, so they're not going to be able to get in the building as early. So, you know, implementing a new system, we're going to have to give him a little more time. I don't think we're going to see him really flourish until next year.
Starting point is 01:03:00 But what I'm, yes, you're right. But what I'm acknowledging is maybe it's because there's so many good young quarterbacks. Those are really good numbers. There are still some young quarterbacks that we've got to be a little bit more patient with. Yeah. If Joe Burrow gets those numbers, Kilwin Rookie of the Year.
Starting point is 01:03:15 And I will tell you that you were wrong, and I was right about Joe Burrow. Yeah. Yeah, I can. Again, I can, it's okay. All I want is Rachel Maddow, Sean Hannity. Like one time. You have to be able to admit that you're wrong. Just once.
Starting point is 01:03:27 Just like, ah, I whiffed last night. Once? You should probably make it a habit of admitting that you're wrong, but we could start with once. We all get mulligans. Everything starts with one step. Jeff Schwartz, former NFL offensive lineman. Brothers now a Pro Bowl offensive lineman at the Kansas City Chiefs.
Starting point is 01:03:42 Ken Rosenthal is going to be joining us this hour. We're going to get baseball now. Players are getting the D.H. Players are getting full pro-rated salaries. They just now have to agree to games. I think they will. I think we're real close. And it looks like we would start baseball somewhere mid-July-ish, July 15th, 20th.

Jeff himself played for seven years, eight years in the National Football League. A lot of it for Carolina, and he still lives there. and Jeff Schwartz is now former NFL offensive linemen joining us via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Lots to talk about. First of all, I want to touch on this got people all worked up yesterday. I didn't see it until this morning that Carolina Panthers were trying to have some fun on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:08:25 And they named their three greatest players of all time, Luke Keekly, Steve Smith, Senior, and Julius Peppers. I don't think it's a doubt. I mean, these are Hall of Famers to me. Steve Smith is close, but I'd vote him in. And people were outraged that Cam wasn't on it. Was the team taking a shot at, Cam? What's your take on this? No, I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:08:44 I think to your point, they put three Hall of Fame guys on there. Julius Peppers is, I think, third or fourth and all-time sack. Steve Smith was the heart and soul of his team for 10 years. And Luke Keekely, in a short career, was the best middle linebacker in football for many years. And he'll be a Hall of Famer as well. It's no slight it can. It wasn't, the list wasn't most influential Carolina Panthers, which Cam would be easily, probably won for most influential Carolina Panthers.
Starting point is 01:09:07 It wasn't who won the most MVP's as a Panther. It just was like who's the greatest panther of all time. And those three guys are going in the Hall of Fame with Panther uniforms on. And Cam is a fringe Hall of Fame guy. This is just such a like a no sports is on right now. We're going to be angry about something on the Internet thing. It's no slight to Cam. That's just where Cam would be fourth probably on that list.
Starting point is 01:09:26 If you've been Mount Rushmore, Cam's there. Yeah. Cam, I do believe, will become a starter in the National Football League this year, probably around October with some injuries. I think we're going to have more injuries than usual because we'll have less practice. Kaepernick's interesting. I started my show today saying
Starting point is 01:09:45 Kaepernick, Anthony Lynn just said, I've got three quarterbacks, but if I didn't, I'd put them on a workout list. That was a topic. And I said to myself, the media wants cap in, but they're doing cap a disservice. Nobody wants a celebrity backup.
Starting point is 01:09:59 Clearly young franchises, there's about 10 teams in the NFL that have young quarterbacks. They don't want a celebrity backup. You know, the jet. and the Giants and Arizona and Cincinnati and Miami. There's 10 of those teams, Cleveland Baker. They don't want a celebrity backup, right?
Starting point is 01:10:14 We know those teams. But I do think there's a market for CAP. Do you and where would it be? Well, I think the thing to consider when we talk about Con Capbrick's, what kind of contract will be offered and does he want to sign that deal? It kind of bothers me sometimes how we talk about him in comparison to Cam Moon, for example. To your point, if someone signs Cam Moon is to be the starting quarterback for that team, He's not going to the Chargers to be Tyrod Taylor's backup and behind Justin Herbert.
Starting point is 01:10:41 If they sign him, it's because they don't think Tyraud is as good, and they think that Herbert's not ready. So Camus brought in to start. He would sign with New England to start, not be behind. Colin Kaepernick would be brought in to be a backup. And does Colin Kaepernick want to sign a quarterback deal for a third-string quarterback spot, for a camp arm? It's a minimum deal typically, not a lot of money. Now, he might get a better deal because of his previous play in the NFL. I don't know about that.
Starting point is 01:11:06 But if you're talking about third string quarterback, kind of just a guy that can see, you know, we can see what he can do in training camp. He's getting a minimum contract for $700,000. Does he want that with no guarantees whatsoever to come in and compete for a backup job? That's something that I don't know. Now, if you're going to give him a backup job with the 10 teams you mentioned that have kind of struggling starting quarterbacks, he would 1,000% take that job because they could be a starter. Easily be a starter if he plays well in training camp.
Starting point is 01:11:32 So there's different jobs that Colin Kaepernick might be up for. And I'm not sure he'd want all of them. I think he would definitely take 100% take a good backup quarterback job in a spot where he could start by midway through the season. Yeah. In that instance, I don't think the team like the Jets would want him to disrupt, if anything, Sam Darnold. So the teams with the best chance to start may likely be the teams
Starting point is 01:11:58 that are not interested in a celebrity backup quarterback. He obviously could go to Kansas City and Baltimore tomorrow, sit in the bench, but does he want to do that? So, you know, I was talking about this yesterday. Obviously, Tom Brady's going to have, he's going to be productive this year. I don't doubt that. But I have a theory on this. Joy and I talked about this.
Starting point is 01:12:16 It's very easy to take an intense person like Tom Brady and ask him to relax a little. Tom Coughlin was very intense. The Giants owner said, chill out a little. He did in one, two Super Bowls. It's different to ask laid-back flip-flop guy to be intense. Take it up a spot. It's always been easier to go from hard-ass to chill-parent than it is to chill-parent to pretend that you're really intense.
Starting point is 01:12:46 Kids don't buy it. My question about Brady and Bruce Ariens is, it's not the football stuff. Can Tom walk into this flip-flop organization off by five, no history of winning, and demand for four and a half months total focus and intensity? I'm not sure he can, what say you? That's a good question.
Starting point is 01:13:06 because, you know, Tom's going to grind away. He's going to even be more in tune with spending extra time to get everyone on the right page in a new offense to make sure that he can prove everyone wrong this year, especially with less of an offseason to work out with this guy. So, will, you know, will Bruce Ariens stay late? But really, this, I think, falls to Byron Lefich. I don't know about, you know, if Byron Lefich is a guy that goes home at 7 or not. I know Bruce Arian talks about, you know, guys leaving early or guys leaving, you know,
Starting point is 01:13:30 after dinner or going home to dinner with their family. But I think Byron Lefich is, this will fall on him. You know, Tom Brady will call him all night. We'll text them all night. I think Byron Lefich is up for it. I really do. I think that this could be a good relationship. You know, Lefwich being younger, having played recently as well,
Starting point is 01:13:46 understanding what it takes to win. It falls on him, in my opinion. And if Lefich can do that, can be the guy that Brady talks to all hours a day, it can work. Because I think Bruce is intense when he's there, which is important. There is something, too, though, that guys, coach's wasted a lot of time in the facility, a lot of time. They just come up with CYA reasons to install plays and freak you out about stuff. So I don't really mind the Arian's approach, which is like, let's get our work done and do a really good job with doing it and then go home and see your families. Colin, a lot of coaches, you know this, they waste so much time in the facility.
Starting point is 01:14:18 They stay there all hours a day. There's making up stuff that doesn't happen on Sundays. Interesting. So we got into a situation earlier. And my staff, so I said, Joy and I have been having opinions on deck. and I said if you took opinions out and you went just with data, there are four things I care about with quarterbacks. Wins, playoff wins, productivity, and availability.
Starting point is 01:14:45 Now, wins are the most important because you could be durable and not any good. You could be productive and a loser. I don't blame you for playoff wins because, I mean, let's be honest. In the end, you need the right coach. It's the best coach as players. So if 50% of why I would pay you big money is do you win a bunch of games? Can you win the division? And then playoff production availability is 16.6% evenly.
Starting point is 01:15:12 DAC comes out over four years to be 10th in wins, 13th in playoffs wins, 13th in production, and tied for first in availability. His rank is 9.5. That means he should be paid between the 9%. ninth and 10th quarterback. That current quarterback is Ryan Tannahill at 29.5 million. Is Dack better than Ryan Tannahill? Yeah, he's better than Ryan Tannahill. Ryan Tannahill was great for eight games last season. I do not think Ryan Tanna Hill is going to be good in Tennessee next year. I think that was a terrible mistake to basically give them either a one-year deal that
Starting point is 01:15:47 pays two years or basically a three-year deal. You know, off an great eight-game run in one season. I think that's much better than Ryan Tannahill. I think that the offense is going to play now will will accentuate his ability to throw the ball downfield, uses legs a little bit as well. I think the offensive times in previous years have been stale. Not so much last year, but we saw even throughout the year
Starting point is 01:16:09 that they kind of got away from what they were good at. Here's the thing about teams of paying quarterbacks. You're kind of stuck. Like, you have to pay the market price for a quarterback. I know it's been proven that paying quarterbacks doesn't often lead to winning, but Dallas screwed themselves. Should have paid them last year.
Starting point is 01:16:24 Got this over with. But they waited all this time and didn't do it. I don't feel bad for them now. having to pay DAC, but you either pay them or start over again. Do you want to start over again with the roster you have? Probably not. So you pay DAC the money that you should have paid them last year and you move on. I think DAC's just much better than Tanaughey's younger, a longer proven track record of staying healthy,
Starting point is 01:16:44 of being successful of efficiency. Ryan Tanya was great last season. But I don't think that's going to continue. There's very rare occurrences in the NFL where a quarterback of Ryan Tano's age has a season like he did, and it just continues to play that well the rest of his career. admitted earlier today that I missed on Daniel Jones of the Giants. You live by Duke. You're not far away from Duke. I watched a handful of games.
Starting point is 01:17:07 I saw a little bit. He always reminded me of Alex Smith. Pretty good athlete, pretty good arm, not special. I was wrong, I think. If you take out of his 12 starts last year, if you take out the short week at Foxborough, no Sequin, no Evan Ingram, no Sturting Shepherd. If you take out that game, the only game, his numbers are 23 touchdowns, nine picks, 63% completion percentage, 91 passer rating with a bad old line and a bad coach. You watched more of him in college than I did.
Starting point is 01:17:43 You've been known to even bet a college game from time to time. Did I whiff on Daniel Jones? Is he way better than we gave him I gave him credit for? So if you look at his rookie season, it parallels a lot with Baker-Mayfield minus the wins, right? they didn't win as much in New York. And the reason why I say it parallels it is you look at the best teams he played, the best passing defenses he played. New England, he didn't play very well.
Starting point is 01:18:08 I'm looking at it right now. Minnesota, it didn't play very well. He didn't play very well against Chicago as well. Those are three top 10 passing teams. He tore up all the bad teams, Philly, Washington, all the teams that didn't have great pass defense. That mirrors exactly what Baker Mayfield did, which he tore up all the bad past defenses his rookie season.
Starting point is 01:18:25 And then he played really well against all the bad ones. So that to me parallels with that. So if you think he's going to be really good, then you might be in for a rude awakening in his sophomore season. I do agree that he played with the team that was not very talented and an offensive coordinator, Pat Schumer, head coach, who obviously got fired and really hasn't shown to be a great head coach anywhere he's been. I was not high in Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 01:18:47 The official team numbers aren't very good for Daniel Jones from his rookie season. But I think it's too early to tell either way if he's going to be really bad or really good. He's got a brand new coaching staff. and he's deal with a brand new staff when he can't hang out with. He can't talk to. He can't learn from them right now. He's going to start slow this year.
Starting point is 01:19:03 But I think it's way too early to decide whether or not he's going to be good. I lean toward still. I don't think so. Good stuff, Jeff Schwartz. Good talking to you, bud. Take care. Eat My Schwartz is the book he co-wrote with his brother.
Starting point is 01:19:18 Very funny. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, MLB has sent another proposal to the Players Association for the 2020 season. The league's newest offer includes a 60 game season, which would begin on July 19th or 20th and be completed in 70 days. Players would receive their full pro-rated salaries, and the playoffs would expand.
Starting point is 01:19:44 And the DH would be added to the National League for 2020 and 2021. And the players would have to agree to waive any potential grievance. Very close, except for the number of games. players want closer to 70 or 80. They want more games, yes. And that would push you late in November with a bunch of cold weather teams that are going to be good this show.
Starting point is 01:20:01 Only the Dodgers in Houston appear to be warm weather teams that'll be good. You could play in November, no problem. Well, have they settled where they're playing? Are they going to do a bubble situation? No, I think they're playing in their own stadiums. So warm weather matters. Again, if it was all, the Dodgers and Houston
Starting point is 01:20:17 are going to be good. But it's a bunch of Cubs, Phillies, Yankees. It's a lot of cold weather teams this year. Well, if they were doing a bubble situation like the other sports, Well, football isn't doing a bubble situation. If they were playing in Florida, Arizona, it'd be different. Right. If they were going to do a bubble situation, then that would work. Like, they could make that work, obviously, because you could do it somewhere where it's going to be warm and not have to worry about playing in November.
Starting point is 01:20:36 But if they're not, it's just a huge problem. I mean, November is the start of the winter in cold weather places. Like, it's, you can't be outside. Let alone play baseball. I lived in Connecticut for 11 years. In October one year, we got a snowstorm because the leaves, still on the trees, it pulled down the power lines in the state. I could not live in my home for 13 days. It snows in October in parts of the east unexpectedly. October. I mean, everyone who's
Starting point is 01:21:07 living there is like, yeah, guys, we know. But for anyone who's in warm weather places, like, that's just, that's not, that's not feasible. The union is expected to counter the league's offer and ask for more games and with the potential of settling at 65 games, which seems like a fair compromise, but it's still, you know, going to push the season a little bit. later. The Mike Trouts are going to make 13 and lose 22 million this year. The big stars, Joy, are losing 60% of their income. No, they're taking a major, major hit. But for all of these leagues, it's also a matter of getting this season in because whatever season you have this year is going to affect next year, the further that you have to put it off or, you know, the amount of money
Starting point is 01:21:45 that you're going to lose if you don't have the appropriate amount of game. So there is a ripple effect for every decision that is made for these leagues moving forward. So we're going to closer to the July 15th deadline for Doc Prescott to get his long-term extension done. And there's been some talk that Dak Prescott could hold out of training camp and beyond if they don't agree to a deal. But according to Jake Glazer, the Cowboys will absolutely not let that happen. He said Dallas plans to have Dak on the team for a very long time and they will get this deal worked out.
Starting point is 01:22:11 I don't really have a feeling that they're not going to get the deal worked out. And mostly because even though I understand Dak's desire to have a shorter contract so that he can then get another contract when the new CBA is up and make more money for longer. I also think that he has to consider the possibility of injury because if he goes out there and plays on the franchise tag and gets injured, catastrophically, which is always available in this sport,
Starting point is 01:22:41 that's going to affect your money moving forward. So if you don't have that long-term contract and that guaranteed money, it's very important. I don't think it's an insult to get the franchise tag. I just think you negotiate down the line as far as you can, and then you're going to have to sign the deal. Like, in the end, I think that DAC is going to take the deal
Starting point is 01:23:00 that has been offered, and I think it's a very fair deal. Now, obviously, I'm not in DAC's position. He has to manage his career however he feels appropriate, but he deserves a long-term deal. It's just a matter of I personally would not want to play on a franchise tag and risk the future of my earnings by possibly getting injured, which DAC's very durable, but you never know.
Starting point is 01:23:18 Right. So it's a huge risk. Finally, the Panthers posted a Twitter, poll yesterday asking fans to name the team's greatest players of all time. Cam Newton was not one of the options. The three choices were Julius Pepper's Steve Smith, Senior, and Luke Keekley. Those are greater players than Cam. Greater. This is what I will say about this. Okay. I understood the outrage of it, but the poll actually accomplished what they wanted to accomplish, which was discussion. Lots of discussion and interaction. Engagement. Engagement. So it's perfect. Now, that all
Starting point is 01:23:52 also said, those are the only three options. They don't have like another option for for Twitter. Like like comment, retweet or or like the tweet so that there had been a fourth option. I'm sure Cam would have been up there. But I understand that they left him off. I just personally feel like he should have been on it. I just don't think take off. We mess things up. Like I've always struggled with most valuable NBA player. It's not best stats. Who's most valuable? That's why Michael, Jordan, and LeBron should have won it every year. They were simply more valuable. The Utah Jazz in the West, without Carl Malone or not the same team.
Starting point is 01:24:31 But they had a Hall of Fame point guard, a Hall of Fame coach, a nice roster. You take Jordan out of the Bulls long term. One year later, they were unraveling. They didn't have his maturity, his talent, his defense. I do think, though, that Cam does get disrespected as far as his value. branding wise to the Panthers. Oh, he sells tickets. Cam made the Panthers relevant
Starting point is 01:24:57 over the past nine years. No question. He was the face of the franchise, a superstar, rookie of the year, offensive rookie of the year. In fact, MVP. This is a good topic. This is smart.
Starting point is 01:25:09 So if it would have been instead of greatest, right, it would have been most relevant Panther. Cam's one. I would argue Christian McCaffrey is too. And then... I mean, Christian McCaffrey is a star. That's a little bit of recency bias.
Starting point is 01:25:27 If you look over the last nine years. Okay, so who is their three most relevant... That were discussed on a national level. Cam one. I don't remember anybody outside of Christian... Cam and Christian. Now, Christian's now a national... He's a national topic.
Starting point is 01:25:41 He's a national topic. I think Julius Peppers is... No, I think it's Luke Keekley. Because of the way... Remember the concussion? Yeah. He cried. So if you're talking relevant...
Starting point is 01:25:52 relevance, it's not even close. It's Cam, Christian, Luke. I got to think about that, but it's definitely Cam, Cam, and then the next, whoever is number two is a significant step down. But the word here was greatest. Kamm's not one of the top three greatest. I still, I, I still agree with Jeff. I think he would be on the Mount Rushmore of Panthers. Okay, that's four. But that's four. Right. So I'm saying, if there was a fourth option, Cam would be on here. But yes, I mean, as far as space of the franchise, like it's unquestioned that Cam made them relevant. And that's a big reason why people defend Cam so much because he's a star. He's a star.
Starting point is 01:26:26 That's totally fair. I have my issues with Westbrook. He is absolutely a star. Yeah, so it's not questionable. Yeah. I have my issues with John Wall. I don't think he's a star because he doesn't move ratings or ticket sales in Washington. Westbrook sells out games.
Starting point is 01:26:40 He's a big name. I don't think that Westbrook or Cam New and like to the John Wall comparison is good enough. Yeah. I mean, Cam's a star. Westbrook's a star. Kyrie Irving's a star. Those guys, they'll never... I mean, there's both MVP's.
Starting point is 01:26:53 Westbrook and Camero. There's a lot of guys that are talented. Yes. But there are not as many stars as you think, and there's almost no superstars. You start looking at the Aaron. Aaron Rogers is a superstar. There's not many of them in the league.
Starting point is 01:27:04 Brady, there's about six in the whole league. And there's a fine line, but it's very clear. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. I think we're getting baseball. And I think we're real close.
Starting point is 01:27:17 And I think we got over two major obstacles. The DH, players get it. Great for the players union. Another big bat, another big salary, and they're getting full, pro-rated salaries. Ken Rosenthal, smart guy, baseball guy, and Fox going to join us next. Want more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Starting point is 01:27:40 Well, historically, baseball players do not like playing baseball in cold weather. It's not only bad optics, but easier to hit that ball when your hands don't sting. So the owners have come out and said, let's go 60 games. Players are pushing back a little. They're getting full-prorated salaries, which was a big win. They're getting the DH, another big win. But they want more games. So let's bring in Ken Rosenthal, a couple of Emmys, Fox Sports Baseball guys, senior writer for the athletic.
Starting point is 01:28:06 Ken Rosenthal now joining us via the Coward Global Satellite Network. All right, let's start with this. Players don't like playing in cold weather. We know the Yankees will be good. The Twins will be good. The Cubs will be good. The Phillies should be very good. A lot of excellent cold weather teams.
Starting point is 01:28:19 Okay, we know Houston, L.A. is good. But I looked this morning at the teams that should be good, and I think I don't want mid-November baseball. Why would the players who don't like playing in cold want more games than 60? Why would they want 70 or 80 can, knowing that would mean November baseball? Well, the reason they want as many games as possible is because they're getting a per-game rate. And that's a pro-rated salary. If it's 81 games and 162 games season, you get half your salary.
Starting point is 01:28:48 So the more games you play, the more money you earn. Now, baseball has been quite adamant that it wants to end the season on September 27th, and it wants the playoffs to end as they normally would by the end of October. The reason is concerned for the second wave of the virus and also network television contracts, such as Foxes. So that is where it is. I don't believe baseball is going to give on extending the season into November. The question is, can you fit more games into the current format, get beyond 60 and get to a place, maybe it's 66, which is a number that works for scheduling purposes, where the players are happy, where they're willing to waive their right to a grievance, willing to consent to expanded playoffs, and still get, in their minds, enough of a return by the greater number of games.
Starting point is 01:29:37 So Rob Manfred's a guy as I have defended, and I've said, listen, nobody likes any of these commissioners. This is hard. Baseball had strikes in the 70s and the 80s and 94 and almost 2002. This is why you hire labor lawyers to run baseball. It's hard. It's always been difficult, and I've supported him. He flew to Arizona to talk to Tony Clark. Did that solve it?
Starting point is 01:30:00 I mean, was that the move baseball players wanted and the baseball union wanted? It's certainly a move that got the ball rolling finally. And one of the problems here, Colin, is that the two sides, often seem to be talking different languages. The players insisted they would not take a pay cut from their prorated salaries. Baseball made three offers, all with pay cuts from their prorated salaries.
Starting point is 01:30:25 So eventually, the union said, okay, go ahead. You have the right to implement a set number of games. Go ahead and do that, and we'll just take it, and then we'll file a grievance. That was kind of the message that baseball got from the union, the talk that was circulating.
Starting point is 01:30:41 And the owner said, We don't want that. We don't want a grievance, a billion-dollar potential grievance looming over our heads. We don't want the players unhappy with a schedule forced upon them. We need to get a negotiated agreement. Manfred's preference throughout his tenure has always been a negotiated agreement rather than unilateral action of any kind. So to get that, they finally had to meet face-to-face. And they're not there yet, of course. But this is kind of a consequence of the virus. People have not been able to meet face-to-face the way they're. would normally in such circumstances. And this was really the first personal interaction between Manfred and Clark, I believe.
Starting point is 01:31:21 Of course, they came out of it, disagree about what they thought they had agreed upon, but that is typical of these negotiations. Now, finally, this is a big one to me. If we do get in November and there's a couple rainouts or the virus ramps up, is it possible that we could have a World Series, Like we play this season, the playoffs come, and all of a sudden here comes a virus, which I think could happen, right? Could you have a situation like the NBA where you just go,
Starting point is 01:31:55 World Series in Texas, World Series in Florida, World Series in Arizona? Is that on the table, Ken? I don't know that it's on the table, but one thing that Colin is going to have to happen here, it's going to have to be flexibility in plans. And that goes for whether fans come back to the park at some point. and whether teams have to leave their cities at some point due to the virus, perhaps they have to relocate for a couple of months. The last month, all kinds of be in play. So neutral sites is what you're talking about.
Starting point is 01:32:30 That would have to be in play too. And I don't know how the final agreement will read if they get a final agreement, but I would imagine that it's going to have to account for some flexibility in approach, not just with the regular season, but the postseason as well. next 48 hours. Do you think we'll have an agreement or is it beyond that? I do believe we'll have an agreement within the next 48 hours. And, of course, I've been saying that for two months. But at this point, Colin, it's kind of a do-or-die situation.
Starting point is 01:32:58 If you don't get an agreement soon, then you can't play a full 60 to 65 games. That's not a full, of course, but what we're talking about here. And time is wasting. Every day that passes is another day you lose of the remainder of the season. It's going to take about a month from the time of the agreement to start the season. You're going to need spring training. You're going to need the teams to get their parks ready for this new world that we're living in. So, yes, time.
Starting point is 01:33:27 It's a year. The next 48th is one way of the, either a negotiated agreement in a 60 to 65 game range or an imposed season that the commissioner has the right to do as long as he gives the players their pro-rated salary. and that season likely would be in the 50 game range. All right, good stuff. Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports, senior writer at the Athletic. Ken, appreciate you stopping by today. Good luck. Cross our fingers on all this stuff.
Starting point is 01:33:53 We can get back to work. Thank you, sir. Thank you, Colin. All right. You know, Joy and I have both been pro players on this. And I'm not always pro players on stuff. Like you can't have a league. You know, like the XFL started.
Starting point is 01:34:06 I was kind of pro Vince McMahon. I was pro-capital. These were marginal players. I thought for the first couple years, the first agreement, you had to let the owners make some money to make this puppy work. It ended up folding because of the pandemic. But this is a rare situation where everybody always talks business people. My dad was a business guy.
Starting point is 01:34:23 Business people always talk about I take the risk. I am taking the risk. Okay, fair. That's fair. You're pushing your money out. I get it. But this is a rare year when there's a physical risk because of a pandemic. And the players are taking all of that.
Starting point is 01:34:36 So if risk is the key word here, the players are taking a physical risk with the pandemic. It is a global pandemic. this is a global sport, players from all over the world, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Dominican Republic, United States. So we have a global pandemic. This is a global sport. There is a virus pandemic risk. Death probably not going to happen. But sickness or family members falling ill is very, very likely.
Starting point is 01:35:03 Players and family members. So in this instance, I'm pro player. I think they'll get it figured out. And I'm not always pro player. Listen, the other thing that has been a big part of this is that the last negotiation in baseball between owners and players, the owners crushed them. And that's a thing. Like the last NBA deal between owners and players, I thought the players did very well for themselves, especially the star players. I mean, the league was humming.
Starting point is 01:35:31 LeBron was winning. The Warriors are going. It's all good. Owners were like, let's keep it rolling. We got, you know, because after MJ, there was a dip. Kobe and Shaq have to. A little bit of a dip. So they were rolling.
Starting point is 01:35:42 So the players had a lot of leverage. Last baseball negotiation, players got hammered. And I don't blame the players for this. Tony Clark's like, I'm not going to get embarrassed twice or I'm not going to have this job. I can't lose back-to-back to CBAs or I'm not going to have this job. So players have been pretty rigid on this. We want the DH. We want a certain number of games.
Starting point is 01:36:02 We'd rather plan our parks. We want our families to be around us. And we want full pro-rated salaries. I don't blame the players. This is a, listen, the D. The DH is a big win for players, the players union. That's a big win. That is another full salary from a home run hitter.
Starting point is 01:36:18 That's salary that that's 32, 30 great hitters. Guys can get extended contracts. A guy can't really play defense. He can be your DH. So I think the players have done very well here. If they get 66 games, the players did very well. Hour 3 live in Los Angeles is coming up next. One more herd?
Starting point is 01:36:37 The herd streams 24 hours a day, 7, 8. a week within the IHeart Radio app. Search heard to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. And he's a former NFL Scout, excellent broadcaster in the Bay Area, and he's on the Heard Podcast Network. It's three and out with John Middlkoff, and I bring him on regularly, have for several years. He's got great insight and great honesty, and I lean on him a lot for big NFL information
Starting point is 01:40:33 and stories. He is now joining us from the Bay Area, his place, via the Coward Global Satellite Network. Let's talk about Anthony Lynn said the other day. He said, I would put cap if I needed a quarterback on my workout list. Explain exactly what that means. It sounds obvious, right? I got a workout list. How long is it?
Starting point is 01:40:55 Does everybody have it? What does it mean in the NFL? Yeah, I think every team, we call them street-free agents, guys that are just available on the street. So right now a workout list at quarterback, to me, the first name that would jump to my, mind would be Cam Newton. He would be on that thing. In a normal world, he probably would have worked out this, you know, offseason for teams. Kaepernick is a good example of a name that obviously there's been a lot of different angles to this over the years. But as Anthony Lidd says, they have a list and he would be on it. Des Bryant, former guys that played in the NFL,
Starting point is 01:41:29 veteran players, maybe injured players that don't have a job at every position. And it's basically broken down by position. Typically, as you get into, of the season, you know, when you have a major injury, if you either, you kind of balance with this guy, be better than our practice squad guy. And maybe you hold a workout, which in the NFL usually takes place on a Monday or a Tuesday, depending on your schedule, where you're traveling from. And you bring in three or four guys at either a given position, maybe several guys at several positions. And you just put them through stuff like you're watching Kaepernick do right now. If you're a quarterback, put them through throwing exercises, see where their
Starting point is 01:42:07 cardio is. If something happened off the field or you have any questions, maybe you sit down with them. But yeah, I mean, a workout list is something that every team in the league has. By the way, do you have a workout list all year that you're constantly working out guys on Monday all year? 100%. And I think as guys, as the league has expanded with the 90-man rosters in the preseason, you have a lot more names that get NFL tape, you know, during August. And a lot of those guys then replace older guys. So the turnover, I would imagine these last six or seven years, in the NFL, there's always a lot of turnover because of the contract situation, but it's definitely always changing. And the thing you never know as the season goes, so many coaching staffs change, right?
Starting point is 01:42:53 So a veteran player, I mean, several years ago, for example, in my backyard, all of a sudden, you know, early October, Navaral Bowman's cut. And he becomes a free agent. Now, certain players don't have to work out, but they go on that list. list. In Philly, I think we just called it the street free agent list, workout list, however you want to label it. But it's all the same. And as he said, he's on their list for a quarterback. Yeah, I mean, Kaepernickle, I would guess, get a workout. I think the commissioner would like it. I think you can make an argument that merchandise sales would go up. They did it Nike when he arrived. I think he's going to get a workout. Are there, I said this, there's 10 teams in the league
Starting point is 01:43:35 that have a young quarterback, like the Giants and the Jets, we'll take those two, that they are so focused on that kid making it, the GM not getting humiliated, that he's not a whiff, I can see them not interested in a little bit of the spectacle of Kaepernick signing. Take those 10 out. That feels like the 10 he wouldn't make it with, or am I wrong there? Yeah, I would agree. If you have a young starting quarterback, there would be,
Starting point is 01:44:02 to me, there's a business element to this. and when you look at the Giants and the Jets, they just need to win. You know, the fan base is massive. I think when you look at the Chargers, right, I think from a business standpoint, is there a team in a major market that is more irrelevant than the Chargers around the country?
Starting point is 01:44:18 Now, from a football angle, the problem is Capernick's not going to beat out Tyrod Taylor, right? Anthony Lynn loves Tyrod Taylor, and he's the type guy in theory that Kaepernick should kind of be in that mold right now, but he's not going to beat him out because Tyrod knows the offense. And then they just drafted a guy, in the top six who would, you know, Herbert, to me, would fall under like Sam Darnold,
Starting point is 01:44:38 like a Josh Allen, like a Daniel Jones. And there's a, there's a balance like you were talking about earlier, just with the stories and trying to make everything calm. But there is an element for the Chargers specifically who have struggled to sell PSLs, who, you know, you live in L.A., who's ever talking about the Chargers? Yeah. Besides guys like me and you that love football, it's not like a casual conversation like the Lakers or like the Dodgers or even like the Rams.
Starting point is 01:45:04 So, but what are you going to do? Are you going to keep three quarterbacks? You know, Kaepernick's not going to start. So is he going to be your backup and you're just going to redshirt Justin Herbert? Well, you just drafted the guy, you know, in the top six. Typically, those guys in this modern day NFL play right away. So I think it is a difficult situation. Back to Anthony Lynn's comments, it's an easy thing to say that doesn't mean there's that much substance behind it.
Starting point is 01:45:28 John Midlakov, former NFL scout. So take me in your scouting world because you dealt with GMs. I want to talk Tua. So my theory had been on Tua. He got kind of a break. This rehab doesn't allow Joe Burrow to get extra practice time. They're all rehabbing. They're all just sitting waiting.
Starting point is 01:45:45 So in a weird way, the first time the players will see Tua, because the only guys allowed back to facilities now are rehab guys. So when the first time the team sees Tua in a month, he'll be ready to play. My take is Miami's an event town. and stars matter more. It's hard to get people to stadiums, right, when you have aqua water a mile away. Do you think there could be organizational pressure
Starting point is 01:46:11 to a first week? A lot of stories, a lot of media, not only sports reporters, news media, there's a couple pieces of video that get out. He looks special. Have you ever been, talk to people in league or in Philadelphia, where you felt there was a pressure on the marketing side,
Starting point is 01:46:29 on the, oh, hell with it, let's just go play him. I think Miami's a weird kind of Vegas town where you could make an argument. Ryan Fitzpatrick is not selling a ticket and, you know, the COVID battle alone will keep people out of stadiums. Do you think there would be organizational pressure to play to early because he's going to be a jersey and ticket star? Yeah, to me, in my experience, you know, Coach Reed had so much cachet that that that never came
Starting point is 01:46:57 up when I was working in the league and then just being around the 49. with Kyle and Harbaugh, that didn't happen either. But Miami has mostly been irrelevant. Now, here's the thing. The SEC is basically the NFL light. So Tua has been the star of the SEC for the last three years. Even when he didn't play, we were talking about him nonstop. So there's an element in that region where he has been treated like a rock star since he was 18.
Starting point is 01:47:22 But a huge reason they traded everyone in the organization was because I think I saw a stat like last year. they had basically been 500 for the last 25 years, was to ultimately get a quarterback. And then because of this guy's injury, kind of falls in their lap. I think there's an element because he was hurt. And it's not like a broken arm or a torn ACL. This was a very,
Starting point is 01:47:45 when I think hip injuries and dislocated hip, you think Bo Jackson career ending. Now, I know it's different with Tua, and he looks healthy in the videos. We ran into him in the Super Bowl. He looked physically moving around well, just walking around. But I think he got to be.
Starting point is 01:47:59 very careful because there is. You traded Mick and Fitzpatrick, Laramie Tunzel. I mean, these guys are star players. And to playoff teams for this guy, and it was the right move looking back because they ended up with two of up. But to me, you have to be able to see 2021, 2021, because the healthy guy we saw at Bama is a star. But when he's not healthy, he can't do anything for you.
Starting point is 01:48:22 And then all of a sudden, on a lighter version, you kind of become what Ryan Taneyhill became. He was always going through the injuries. and it just derailed the franchise. So I think you have to be very careful and you can't. And they got Brian Flores. Where does he come from? New England.
Starting point is 01:48:37 Outside noise. Irrelevant. Now it's easier said than done. And you got an owner and you're trying to make money. But I would imagine they're pretty cautious this season. So as I look around, I can acknowledge I watch Daniel Jones of the Giants in college. And I thought he was Alex Smith, average arm, athlete. but not spectacular, I thought the Giants reached.
Starting point is 01:49:02 But if you take out his Thursday night start at New England, no Sequin, no Evan Ingram, no Sturting Shepherd, and again, facing the greatest defensive coach in my lifetime, his numbers through 11 starts last year are darn good. 23 TDs, 9 picks, 63% completion percentage, almost a 92 passer rating. And I said this morning, not only that I whiff on the, the draft pick. I thought it was a reach. But is this now the most? We acknowledge who we like in this league and who we don't. Nobody thinks he's special. I look at those numbers, John, and I say,
Starting point is 01:49:40 if Burrow gets those numbers through 11 starts, he's rookie of the year. And I'm not sure the giants are that much worse than Cincinnati. What is Daniel Jones as a former scout? What is he in your eyes? Yeah, I think Alex Smith was the fair comparison out of college. And then I remember watching that Tampa Bay game, his first start, and it was like, wow, I thought his arm was stronger. Now, the comp with Alex with the athleticism is there. I think his arms probably, you know, a guy that gets crushed. And listen, I'm not the biggest fan, but he is a productive player as Kirk Cousins. Now, Daniel Jones is much more athletic. The problem with Cousins is when the pocket breaks down, he's crude because he can't ad lib, where Daniel Jones, back to the Alex Smith, can make things
Starting point is 01:50:22 happen with his legs. So I'm with you. I think there's definitely something. there. Now, I'm not going to go out on a limb and thinking he's going to be some star yet. Also because that organization, Colin, and you talk about this all the time, how important it is for a quarterback to go to the right place. I mean, he's now on a second coach, right, a guy that's in his late 30s who's been a special team's coach. He's got Jason Garrett, the just fervor of the New York fan base and the pressure on this guy because he felt like from the jump, he was overdrafted. I had buddies in the SEC because I was crushing. the pick that kept texting me right after like, listen, man, I think you're being a little harsh.
Starting point is 01:51:01 I had first round grades on this guy. Now, would I have taken him six? No. But I think the general consensus to the scouting community that was going through that, you know, that southern corridor, Daniel Jones was light. Now probably in like the 20s, not six overall, but he's definitely a talented guy. But as we know, what's so important to success, he has a really good running back. Well, his offensive line was in Chambles. Who, you know, Odell Beckham ain't walking through that door. Who's he throwing it to? And Jason Garrett, is he a good offensive coordinator? Because the guy we've been talking about the last couple of years, no. So I think there are a lot of question marks that are out of the kids control. And you've got
Starting point is 01:51:40 to get them help. And they drafted offensive linemen. They have a star running back. But a star running back we've seen can only do so much. I think his success, like Alex, if you remember Alex, the first three or four years, he was a joke. People laughed at people at, people at one point in time chanted David Carr when he was on the sideline. And then when Harbaugh came in, stability, the offensive players around him got a lot better. The offensive line players around him got better. He shot off like a rocket ship right to Andy Reed. So I just think the Giants organization is in so much turmoil.
Starting point is 01:52:14 I think even this year it will be hard to kind of gauge what Daniel Jones is. Good stuff, John Middlecalf, Middlecalf, former NFL, NFL, NFL, Hurt Podcast Network 3 and out. seeing you, buddy. Nice stuff. Thanks, Colin. Have a good one. Got a shot there. It looks like the Masters of the U.S. Open or Pebble Beach behind him. I love... I'm golfing again there, Joy. You golfing again? Starting to really hit it.
Starting point is 01:52:36 Right down the middle. I can't even keep a straight face saying that. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So even though the Browns do have O'Dell and Jarvis Landry, their run game is going to get a lot of attention with Nick Chubb and Kareem in the backfield, but receivers coach, Chad O'Shea, is confident the receivers will still be happy with the offense that Kevin Stafansky is putting in place. We're going to try to put the team first, and we're going to try to put winning first. And I think that they realize that.
Starting point is 01:53:13 They embrace that. And I think that they're also aware that there's other players at other positions that will help us win games that are capable to really help us. Everybody's role is kind of what you made it. And I think that as a coaching staff, I see it as a real good problem to have where you have a lot of opportunities and a lot of players that can really help us win. You know, it's amazing with all those weapons and they really are good. Pro football focus is predicting he throws for 20 touchdowns, fewer than Gardner Minshue last year. Think about that. Pro football focus prediction for him with Landry Beckham, Austin Hooper, David, and Joku is 20 touchdowns. And you think that's mainly because of the running game?
Starting point is 01:53:57 I don't even know. I think it's an incredible, and pro football focus loves Baker. Like if 20 touchdowns is where he gets with that team, you got yourself a problem. I think theoretically what he's talking about makes sense. But I think that that really only works if you have a good culture in place, right? Like teams, players and stars buy into a culture, coach, a quarterback that they believe in. And then those cases maybe we'll have. to sacrifice personal numbers for those wins.
Starting point is 01:54:29 Like everybody wants to win, right? Like, I'm not doubting that Jarvis Landry and Odell want to win. Of course they want to win. But, you know, you want to get your numbers, too. Like, none of us are assuming that Odell is going to finish his career in Cleveland. Like, he wants to continue to have great numbers and build on his legacy individually as well, which I don't think is selfish, especially if you're not really winning. So when it comes down to that and they're not getting the catches that they want,
Starting point is 01:54:55 seeing the ball as much as they want and they're not winning, how does that go? Like, then everything starts to fall apart, right? There's a lot. And again, we're not even talking about the tight ends that they have there as well. Like, there's a lot of places the ball can go in this office. You almost have too much of a good thing? Yeah, no. People say, oh, no, you cannot have two.
Starting point is 01:55:15 It's like in the NBA, there's one ball. You can't have four guys that are really ball-centric. In the NFL, you got mouse to feed. You can't. They have, I'll say, this. They have the deepest offensive talent in the league. Kansas City's got better starting talent.
Starting point is 01:55:31 I don't think there's a team in this league with Cleveland's offensive depth. They have two of everything. And then they have now two good tackles. I'm very skeptical of the Steelers and the Browns this year. I just want to sit back and see. Everyone's telling me, Ben Rathesberger's
Starting point is 01:55:47 perfectly healthy and they're fine and that there's a new system in culture in Cleveland and they're going to move forward and, you know, it's all going to be no No more talk. It's all in the field. I just, I got to wait and see. So you talked about this yesterday. You thought that the Ravens could possibly go 16 and no. No team has gone undefeated in the regular season since the Patriots in 2007. We all know who that ended. According to Fox Bet, the Chiefs have the best, best chance of pulling it off
Starting point is 01:56:13 this year at plus 3,300. Their schedule's way tougher. Baltimore's slightly behind them at plus 4,000. Kansas City's got a brutal schedule. They have to go to Tampa Bay, Tom Brady late, at the Saints, at Baltimore on Monday night. And they've got another brutal game somewhere. The only game for Baltimore that they may be under, because I think Baltimore is going to be a seven-plus favorite in about half their games. At Philadelphia is it. Listen, schedule matters.
Starting point is 01:56:39 Baltimore next year travels 6,000 miles. Seattle travels 30,000. They don't go west. I think the furthest west they go, somebody told me, is Houston. Yeah, that's a huge break. them their schedule. On the flip side, Foxbet has the Jags with the best odds to go winless in 2020 at plus 2,800, Cincinnati plus 6,600, Carolina, Washington, Miami plus 10,000. Miami's not going to go winless. Believe me, I, I wasn't. Winless or undefeated? No,
Starting point is 01:57:11 winless. Oh, Miami's not going winless. Winless. No, no, no, not at all. Jacksonville's the only team, I think, potentially. I don't think, I don't think any team is going to go winless. It's very hard to go winless. Yeah. I was at that game in Miami. year that they almost went winless. I mean, that's a rough season. Don't wish that on anybody. So yesterday we got our first look at what Tom Brady looks like as a buck.
Starting point is 01:57:31 Yeah. You were very impressed. Now we have Rob Garnkowski. He looks so much better in the Tampa uniform. He looks so much better. It's kind of, I mean, I don't know. It's just, I think Gronk, this actually fits Gronk more than Brady. Totally.
Starting point is 01:57:46 I mean, the Patriot's uniform was an IBM suit for him. For Gron. Yeah. This is a part. a little more flare. Yeah, this is a party. He outgrew his his uniform.
Starting point is 01:57:57 That wasn't the only picture that was kind of shocking that hit the internet yesterday. What? Our friend Jason Barrett tweeted the face app challenge. And you didn't get the chance
Starting point is 01:58:08 to see this. So this is a challenge of like everyone's doing on the internet and they're switching. Sexes? Switching sexes? Yes.
Starting point is 01:58:16 I actually think I'm very handsome man. So as a man, that's what you would look like. I look, I really, look like my nephew, Isaiah, because he looks like Jason with hair. I'm kind of hot. You're a very, a very
Starting point is 01:58:28 beautiful woman. You have very nice cheekbones. I am a good looking woman. Nice eyes. Great hair. Great hair. I mean, flawless hair. That is some professional hair. But I do kind of look like Jason. I think we have the picture of the side by side with me and Jason too. Yeah. I mean, your brother's the best-looking NFL player of all time.
Starting point is 01:58:47 Well, yeah, of course my brother's best-looking NFL player of all time. He looks like a neutrino model. He was a neutrino model. He's got the best skin. He was the Nutragina. I think I told him that when I first saw him. I'm like, you're one of those guys that's never out of pimple. Get out of here.
Starting point is 01:58:58 He was the Neutogena spokesmodel. He actually has a, he was going to kill me for saying this. Did he have a calendar? He did when he was like very early in his career. A calendar? It's like naked and stuff? Not naked, but it's like, it's something. Sorry, Jason.
Starting point is 01:59:14 Did he have a cute high school girlfriend? Yeah, she was pretty, yes. She is pretty as me as a girl? You are stunning. You really do have great cheekbones. I'm a smoke show. You are a smoke show. Great skin, very glowy.
Starting point is 01:59:32 That is, so who came out with this idea? Jason Barrett. It's the sports radio. Media guy, yes. I cannot see it, though. That's for sure. I'll never unsee that. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 01:59:45 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lod News. Father's Day Sunday. And we were thinking about this this morning. It's remarkable in every sport. How many incredible father-son duos there have been? We had like 30 this morning and chose 10.
Starting point is 02:00:03 It's remarkable how many good ones there are. Some dads really turn up the heat in their do-it-yourself projects. When it comes to their kids, I'm talking rocket ships, two-story tree houses. Lowe's is celebrating these extreme do-it-yourself dads with lows, dedications. Listen all weekend long to hear some of the best low. dedications from our listeners. Loes. Do it yourself, dads.
Starting point is 02:00:28 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Father's Day is Sunday. And a special day, right? I'm going to hang out with my kids. You are too, I'm sure. And so we were thinking about this morning how many great father-son combos there are. And we just got, we picked 10. and in some instances, this is what I find unbelievable, when you can have two sons that not only make leagues, but are like substantial All-Star level.
Starting point is 02:01:03 I think you'll be surprised by it. So we did our top 10 in order, we think the most prolific father-son combos of all time. So let's go number 10. So number 10 would be Bob Boone, Brett Boone, and Aaron Boone. All three made an All-Star team. Now, Bob was a great defensive catcher, a seven-time gold glove winner for the Angels. I remember him.
Starting point is 02:01:26 Brett, who played late for Seattle, but early for Cincinnati, was a great fielder, a four-time gold glover. And Aaron, of course, hit the legendary walk-off. You know, that game against the Yankees and the Red Sox. And now he manages the Yankees. So number 10, Bob Boone, Brett Boone, Aaron Boone. Defense runs in the family. All three, great gloves. All three made an all-star team.
Starting point is 02:01:46 Number nine, Cecil, Fielder, Prince Fielder. Here's what's bizarre. They both finished with 319 career home runs. How bizarre is that? It's the only father-son duo to each hit 50 home runs in a season. It's never happened before. Cecil Fielder, a three-time all-star. Prince was a six-time all-star.
Starting point is 02:02:07 They're pretty impressive. And again, they both end their career with 319 home runs. Both were big men. Okay. Number eight, Calvin Hill and Grant Hill. So I watch Calvin and Grant play. So it's the only duo where they play different sports in this entire ranking. That's amazing.
Starting point is 02:02:26 So your son goes to a different sport. Both went to academic institutions. Calvin Hill went to Yale. Grant Hill went to Duke. Calvin, a four-time pro bowler with the Cowboys, won a Super Bowl, Grant a seven-time All-Star and a Hall of Famer. The only duo, different sports. Number seven, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Starting point is 02:02:52 What's interesting is dad is rough and irascible, his late father. Dale's the most likable guy in the sport, I think, in my lifetime. So both have won the Daytona 500. Dale Jr., won it twice. Earnhardt Sr., the Intimidator, won 76 races and seven championships. Dale Jr. won 26 races and is probably the most popular NASCAR driver of my life. Number six, Bobby Hull and Brett Hole, hockey. Only father-son duo ever in hockey to score 50 goals in a season,
Starting point is 02:03:23 have 600 goals in their career and 1,000 points in their career. I didn't see Bobby play a ton. I'd moved on to other sports. Saw a lot of Brett. It's the first father-son pair to be in the hockey Hall of Fame. They were the very first. Both have been an MVP and both have won at least one Stanley Cup. They're number six.
Starting point is 02:03:42 Number five, near and dear to our heart. We love Howie Long, Howie Long, Chris Long, and Kyle Long. So now we get into two sons. So Howie's a Hall of Famer, eight-time Pro Bowl. Chris Long, two Super Bowl championships, Walter Payton Man of the Year. And Kyle was a three-time Pro Bowler. All three, my guests, will go into broadcasting. So a Hall of Famer, a Pro Bowl, another Pro Bowler,
Starting point is 02:04:08 and then two Super Bowl rings and the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2018. Very impressive. How about number four? Again, near and dear to me because I watched them both play. Ken Griffey Jr., Ken Griffey, Sr. Now, I watched Ken Griffey, Senior. I remember those Cincinnati Reds team. He was the fastest player on the team.
Starting point is 02:04:25 They had Dan Dreson, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion, Pete Rosent third, Johnny Bench. Then the outfield was Cesar, Geronimo, and center. Left field was a little crazy. They moved around a little bit, but Ken Griffey, Sr. was the right fielder. He was the fastest guy on those great red machine teams. They played together on the same team. Only father-son pair to hit back-to-back home runs ever, which is crazy.
Starting point is 02:04:49 Griffey Sr., 19 years, two World Series of the Reds, three All-Star teams. He was a burner. Griffey Jr. is 13-time All-Star, and many people believe the most naturally gifted baseball player we've ever seen. And through the steroid era, there is one player that we have never even considered to be on steroids. one, Ken Griffey Jr. There's never been a rumor, never been a story, never been a teammate, never been a consideration. Isn't that amazing they hit back-to-back home runs? That's incredible.
Starting point is 02:05:24 Number three, Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonds. People forget, we know Barry Bonds. People forget how good Bobby Bonds was. It was Willie Maze and Bobby Bonds. People thought were the best athletes in the sport. They're the only two players in baseball history of five years, five seasons, with 30 homers, 30 stolen bases, Barry and Bobby Bonds. That's it.
Starting point is 02:05:43 Bobby Bonds was a great fielding outfielder, a three-time gold glover, a three-time All-Star, second player ever with 300 career homers and steals. Willie Mace was the first. So you forget how good Bobby Bonds was, and then there's Barry Bonds, who's the home run king for a reason, and a 14-time All-Star. Also a great fielder in his prime. Number two, Del Curry, Steph Curry, Seth Curry. Now, this is two kids.
Starting point is 02:06:09 Only 50 players have ever shot 40% from three in their career. all Curry's have. So Dell lead is the all-time leader in the history of the Hornets and three-pointers. Steph Curry is considered the greatest three-point shooter ever, and Seth Curry's now number two all-time in the NBA for three-pointers. You can make an argument. You have the two best pure three-point shooters in the game and that Del Curry was first or second best in his career. it is easily the best shooting family in the history of basketball. Absolutely.
Starting point is 02:06:45 Yeah. I always thought that Seth's a little underrated. In the NBA today, Seth Curry is a nice little player. He is a good player. You can compare it to Steph. It's another level. And finally, it's hard to argue. Archie Peyton Eli Manning.
Starting point is 02:07:02 Again, most of you didn't watch Archie Manning play. He had the misfortune of playing for the Saints when they were awful. So Archie, all three of them were top two picks. Archie made three Pro Bowls notable because the Saints were horrible. There's not a team in the league consistently as bad as they were. They are significantly worse than Cleveland's been the last 20 years. He made three Pro Bowls. Peyton made 14 Pro Bowls.
Starting point is 02:07:28 Eli made four and won two Super Bowls. That's the greatest father, son, son. And by the way, I believe there's another member of the family. that's a quarterback somewhere in the south, I wish I knew the name. Cooper's kid, Cooper's son, is supposed to be more talented than all of them. Cooper's the funniest,
Starting point is 02:07:49 although Peyton would argue with that. They all have a good sense of humor. Yeah, they're all very funny. All right, that's good stuff. Don't sell Ken Griffey Sr. short. See, that's showing my age. Ken Griffey, Sr. was the fastest player on those great big red machines.
Starting point is 02:08:06 in a sprint even faster than Joe Morgan. He was a burner before we used the term burner, and I should probably quit using it. All right, we'll see you tomorrow. We'll see you tomorrow on Friday. Be safe. It's the third. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind,
