Starting point is 00:02:41 This is the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles, High Heart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me on a Wednesday. And we got breaking news. Lots of stuff happening today. All right, we got lots of breaking news. Let's start with the breaking news.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Des Bryant. troubled wide receiver, a little bit of a diva, still's got some talent. No question, good enough to be an NFL receiver. Not a one, but on a good team, maybe a two or a three, has been signed to a one-year deal by the New Orleans Saints who are averaging, you know, 30 a game. It's not like they needed him. You know who got Des Bryant this job? Do you know who Des Bryant should send a thank you note to? Josh Gordon of the New England Patriots.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Josh Gordon comes with some baggage. Can be needy, high maintenance, but man is he talented. And Sunday night, Josh Gordon and Tom Brady, the veteran quarterback, the established offense. Josh McDaniels, Brady, Josh Gordon and Tom Brady, ooh, that looks pretty good. Josh Gordon and Brady. Oh, oh. AFC. Josh Gordon and Brady look pretty good.
Starting point is 00:04:02 And this is a copycat league. That's all this league is. This league is always love change. They like rule changes, coaching changes, player changes, legislation, PAT changes. But they do like to see somebody else do it first and succeed first. Russell Wilson, 5-11 quarterback,
Starting point is 00:04:21 college numbers were amazing. Gets drafted, succeeds. Everybody's like, yeah, Johnny Mansell. Let's take that 5-11. doesn't get drafted in the first round, if not for Russell Wilson. Philadelphia Eagles do a bunch of free agent moves in the offseason win a Super Bowl. And then Jay Glazer told us, now everybody in the league wants to do it because, like, well, the Eagles did it. Now everybody's trading like crazy in the season and making moves in the season and free agents
Starting point is 00:04:43 to trades during the season. They used to do that. Sean McVeigh gets a job with the L.A. Rams. He's like 32 years old. He just got his driver's license. And now everybody wants to hire. Oh, Matt Nagy gets a job. And Kyle Shanahan gets a job.
Starting point is 00:04:56 The other day they're talking about Lincoln Riley, coach in the Dallas. Cowboys. Lincoln Riley didn't even get a phone call five years ago. Sean McVeigh is the gateway to all the young coaches. How about, remember, you couldn't draft a running back in the first round that Cowboys got Ezekiel Elliott at number four for the Cowboys, and he leads the NFL in rushing, and he gets Sequin Barclay drafted at number two. A couple years ago, it was like, you can't draft a running back in the first round. Cowboys do it, boom, hit a home run, and now the New York Giants pass on quarterbacks to get one. This is all about Josh Gordon.
Starting point is 00:05:31 I mean, Des Bryant is no better today than he was three months ago. He's not any better today than three months ago. And by the way, the Saints don't even need him. Just like the Patriots got to a Super Bowl without Julian Edelman. Just like the Patriots have gotten to a Super Bowl without Gronk. Patriots won the AFC. Gronk was hurt and Edelman was out. But when you watch the Patriot Sunday and you'll watch Josh Gordon and Tom Brady,
Starting point is 00:05:57 let's be honest. You sat there if you were a Steelers fan. You sat there if you were a Chiefs fan. If you're a Chargers fan, if you're a Texans fan, you're like, damn. This Brady Josh Gordon Fee, Tom's got a deep threat. Tom's got his first deep threat since Randy Moss. And I think Drew Breeze is looking there and they're watching Sunday night. And I think because they just beat in the Rams, they go out to dinner,
Starting point is 00:06:23 they come home and they watch Brady and Josh Gordon. and they don't need him. And Josh Gordon, the Patriots didn't have to have him. But man, Josh Gordon gives you that little icing. It tastes a little better. And if that's how he got picked up, that's the difference. Peyton, Sean Peyton and Drew Brees, watched Tom Brady and Belichick get Gordon every week he's better.
Starting point is 00:06:51 And they're thinking to themselves, you know what, eight weeks from now, We're hosting Philadelphia in a playoff game. We're hosting Carolina in a playoff game. We're hosting the Packers or Minnesota in a playoff game. We're hosting the Rams in a playoff game. And it's a tie game late. Can Des make a 38-yard catch to get us in the red zone with three minutes left? Darn right he can.
Starting point is 00:07:12 Darn right he can. There you go. All right. Let's shift gears to yesterday, a story that broke when we were on the air. And I do think, by the way, Dez is going to work. I don't think he's going to be a superstar. I don't think you'll probably be quite as. good as Josh Gordon in New England, but he'll be something.
Starting point is 00:07:29 They've already got Mike Thomas, they already got two backs. They got Breeze. They have a great O line. He'll be something. He'll be a catch-a-game. He'll be a catch-a-game. He'll be something. So yesterday, Troy Aikman used two words, and they're big words, and they're powerful
Starting point is 00:07:44 words. And they got everybody talking these words did. Because Troy Aikman must have said 200 words, but there were two words, he said. One was dysfunction, one was overhaul, that got everybody's a, tension. Let's start with the first thing he said yesterday about the Cowboys dysfunction. You know, I talk to people. I talk to people who have been inside the building and have a pretty good understanding of how things are run. And in a lot of ways, there's a lot of dysfunction. And that has to change if this team is going to be able to compete on a consistent basis,
Starting point is 00:08:18 like the teams that you look to around the league that seemingly are in the hunt each and every year. So let's talk about the word dysfunction. That lands big in Dallas. That's a talk in Dallas yesterday. That was a talk around the country yesterday. Troy Eichmann doesn't talk like that about the Cowboys much. Disfunction. Is he right about that? Yes. We have seen over the last 100 years in this country, wealthy families, the DuPonts, the Kennedys, the Rockefellers, the Hearst family, the Trumps, wealth creates power and leverage, and it creates celebrities and stars and entitlement, and it creates some dysfunction. I told Joy this yesterday.
Starting point is 00:08:57 The Lakers, Rial Madrid, Manchester United, New York Giants, New York Yankees, FIFA, the soccer organization, IOC, the Olympic Committee, Dallas Cowboys, New York Knicks. When you are that big and there's so much money involved, you start making decisions for money. A couple years ago, the Lakers signed Kobe Bryant to a massive contract. Why? because their broadcasting partner, Time Warner, said, we're not signing a deal unless you sign Kobe. And so the Lakers made a move for Time Warner. Now, I'm ready for the team to appease a broadcaster.
Starting point is 00:09:37 For the record, years ago, the Yes Network, had the Yankees games. And they said sign A-Rod, big contract. Well, it's a lot of money. You want a deal with us? You want your games on Yes Network? make sure you sign A-Rod. So when you're a rich family, the DuPonts, when you're a rich organization, Real Madrid,
Starting point is 00:09:59 you know, these Manchester United, Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, there is so much money and so much wealth, that decisions are often made, not just about wins and losses. So I think Troy Aikman's comment on dysfunction is accurate, it's fair, there's some of it, and I would say you see more of it than you do less at the very top. second word Troy Aikman used. Let's overhaul. That's another big word. Let's go with that. So to me, if you're asking me, I'd say there has to be a complete overhaul of the entire organization. You just can't simply replace head coaches and say, now it's going to be better. No, it's been shown that it's not better.
Starting point is 00:10:50 That's where I disagree. The Chicago Bears made one move. Tribisky played for John Fox. Tribusky now with Matt Nagy. One move. It changed everything. 13 points more a game. Sean McVeigh replaces Jeff Fisher. Now, they did get a left tackle, and they grabbed Robert Woods, a wide receiver. But they made one huge move. Jeff Fisher defensive guy, Sean McVeigh offensive guy.
Starting point is 00:11:16 By the way, the Philadelphia Eagles, and on that, Chip Kelly, they brought in Doug Peterson, and it kind of changed everything. This is a quarterback coach league. Don't kid yourself. Coaches matter. Never forget the four teams in college football that are one, two, and three, and four. Nick Sabin, Dabo Sweeney, Brian Kelly, and Jim Harbaugh, all four of those programs before those coaches got there.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Those huge brands were a mess. Bama was a mess. Clemson was a mess. Michigan was a mess. And Notre Dame was a mess. I don't believe the Cowboys need an overhaul. I think they need a new coach. And I think they probably have to draft another quarterback.
Starting point is 00:11:57 But let me tell you why I don't think it's an overhaul. They have cap space. They have an excellent, athletic, aggressive, talented front seven. Very few in the league better than them. It's a passing league. They now have a number one receiver. You need a star running back too. That helps.
Starting point is 00:12:14 They got one of those. They also have an elite left tackle. And their offensive lines not as good as it was years ago, it's still top eight, stop 10. I agree with a dysfunction, which I think is unavoidable in wealthy families and in mega brands. I just think it's unavoidable. That much money creates dysfunction. But I don't think the Cowboys need an overhaul.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I think what the Cowboys' new need is a fresh leader at the top. And I do think you got one more year a DAC, the rest of this year and next year, you should draft another quarterback. You should draft another quarterback. Dysfunction, yes. Overhaul. I disagree. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:00 two things of the college football playoff ranking came out and if you're a cowboy fan not only be afraid, Jean Goulae be terrified of what I'm going to say next. You thought I was going to be in
Starting point is 00:13:16 a good mood today. Terrified at what I'm going to say next. That's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS1 and the IHeard Radio app. Want to understand your DNA and what it tells you about your family story.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Now through Thanksgiving, 23 and Me Ancestry Service kits, $49 when you buy two or more, 23andMe.com slash the herd, Joy Taylor, in a couple of minutes. If you want to know what the Cowboys should do with Dak Prescott, you know, I mean, listen, what do they say? The past tells you the future, just pay attention. And so, you know, I look at the Jacksonville Jaguars, and they kind of gave the Dallas Cowboys a roadmap on what to do with a young quarterback. Now, Dallas crushed Jacksonville earlier this year, right?
Starting point is 00:14:06 Last year, Jacksonville was the talk of the league. The Patriots are always good. The Steelers are always good. The Packers are always good. Oh, my God, Jacksonville's good. So a year ago, Joy, Jacksonville had a great front seven, had a star running back, and they had, you know, a young quarterback who runs better than he throws.
Starting point is 00:14:26 And he went out and Jacksonville had a decision to make, had a little success. They almost beat New England. They beat Pittsburgh and they gave Blake Bordell's a lot of money and a contract extension. And now this year, Jacksonville looks like the fourth best team in their division. So now you have the Dallas Cowboys. They have a really talented front seven, young and talented. They got a star running back, Zeke. And they've got this quarterback who's young and is kind of mobile. And it looks like he kind of runs better than he throws. And here's what Jerry Jones said he's about to do with Dak Prescott. Dak is looking at what last night?
Starting point is 00:15:12 You don't have anybody that's more capable to look at. Is he a quarterback for the next 10 years? Jack is the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. He's young and he's going to get extended. Okay. And we were all asking the same questions about Blake Bortles a year ago, right? like Jacksonville had front seven, star running back, power team, and a mobile quarterback runs better than throws.
Starting point is 00:15:42 He didn't really trust. So he had his moments. And a couple big wins beat Pittsburgh. It gave you a glimpse. Dak Prescott 13 and 3 rookie year. Nobody had film. Kind of gave you a glimpse. And then they extended Blake Bortles in now.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Well, Colin Bortles and Dak are different. And no, they're not. Is it fair if you take the last 16 regular season? season games of a quarterback. Is that a good enough number of games to get a fair kind of read on a player? I think it is. Last 16 regular season games, Dack Prescott on the left, Blake Bortles on the right. Uh-oh, they're the same quarterback.
Starting point is 00:16:22 For our radio listeners, if you hear something, it's John Goulet throwing up in his mouth. Dack to the left and Blake Bortles to the right, and Dack Prescott, it should be noted. had the better offensive line. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I'm not even a Cowboys fan and that stinks.
Starting point is 00:16:48 It's scary. I mean, it's really brutal. We were saying a year ago, you know, Blake Bortles, you know, you have a winner two. You can't. I've never been a Blake Bortals believer.
Starting point is 00:17:01 And I was never. Maybe it was just, maybe it was just, well, you weren't really a DACBeliever. Not at all. And his rookie season kind of forced you. Six games into his rookie year. I'm like, you're like, all right. It looks like I was wrong on that one. When Collin was right.
Starting point is 00:17:14 So as you mentioned earlier, we have some breaking news. The New Orleans Saints have reached an agreement with Des Bryant's, a one-year contract, which he will sign the contract on Thursday. Although they've won seven straight games and ranked second in the NFL with 34.9 points per game, they're actually kind of thin at receiver. They are. Ted Ginn Jr. was placed on IR with a knee injury last month, and Cameron Meredith has not panned out so far. He was nearly 90 to zero targets in the past three games.
Starting point is 00:17:41 So they do have Michael Thomas. Alvin Kamara has 51 receptions, Benjamin Watson and Treyquan Smith. But they could use a guy. By the way, New England had James White, and they have Sony Michelle. They got two backs like New Orleans. Saints have Ben Watson, Patriots have Gronk. They have Michael Thomas in New Orleans And you got Edelman
Starting point is 00:18:03 You have a go-to guy You could have lived And then you got a bunch of Chris Hogan's And Treyquan Smith You could live without The saints are rolling They don't need They don't need him
Starting point is 00:18:16 But again You have two more great years Of Drew Breeze You got about two to three more A Brady When I'm watching that game Sunday Joy Josh Gordon is different Dez is different
Starting point is 00:18:29 No, I think you're right that the success of Josh Gordon has shown that that can still happen and that it's worth taking a risk on them if it all pans out and they can work within that system. I like this move, actually. I think that if, you know, who knows what shaped Des Bryant's in. I'm assuming he's been working out, but obviously, you know, he hasn't been playing football. It's kind of the same fear with Levion coming back. But I like this move. I feel like everyone thought that Des Bryant should be playing on a team.
Starting point is 00:18:58 It was kind of weird why he wasn't. over the past month or so, that story has kind of died down because he hasn't been on a team. But I like this. Everyone's going to be watching and everyone's definitely going to be watching on November 29th because that is when the Saints host Dallas. And the Philadelphia Eagles added Golden Tate. Yeah. So the Saints are looking out there and are like, who is in, who's a roadblock for us?
Starting point is 00:19:21 Maybe, you know, Atlanta's got good receivers. Philly adds Golden Tate. The Rams have good receiver. Well, also it only makes you deeper at Y receiver, which can't hurt. They are an offensive-driven team. The NFL is trending in an offensive direction. It's a good move for them. Speaking of the Cowboys, Jason Garrett, he's usually stone-faced during his press conferences,
Starting point is 00:19:40 but he had a different response when he was asked about his job status. I just focus on doing my job as well as I can do it every day. We just got to focus on what we need to do. We have to clean up the game, and we have to get our eyes on Philadelphia right now. Obviously, it's a short week. Players will come back in. We won't do a long review of this game, but we'll hit the highlights. I still am not buying that Jason Garrett is going anywhere.
Starting point is 00:20:09 I know that we talked about at the beginning of the show, what Troy Aikman said, and an overhaul. Dallas's schedule gets really rough in the next month. What if he goes 0 and 4? It gets really rough. They play at Philly next. I mean, what if he goes 0 and 4? I just don't think at this point in Jerry Jones' tenure as the owner of the Cowboys, He's going to all of a sudden start trending in this revolutionary, innovative way.
Starting point is 00:20:33 He's just going to do what Jerry does. And who's to tell Jerry he's wrong? He's been incredibly successful in business. He's built the Cowboys into an unbelievable brand. I don't win much. Well, I mean... It's like LeBron. You can have all these brands.
Starting point is 00:20:50 You've got to win basketball games. Or LeBron's brand? Isn't that big of a deal? I don't care about his pizza. I care about his basketball. I mean, the Cowboys have survived as a brand for a very long time without winning a lot of I know, but it's, it's, I mean, you can keep telling me that the brand's great, and I agree with you, and LeBron's brand's great, but if LeBron stunk as a basketball player tomorrow, I'm not buying his pizza. I mean, I prefer, I prefer the winning. Yes. I prefer the winning myself, but I'm sure Cowboys fans do too, but bringing in a coach that's young and innovative and is going to make all the personnel decisions and make all the calls. I just don't see that happening.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Finally, it's time now for the real deal presented by Carl's Jr. And Hardee's and Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett. are the real deal. It may have only been one game, but it's extremely difficult to not already crown Duke as a national champion after watching that beatdown of Kentucky last night. 1184. R.J. Barrett scored 33 points, and Zion added 28 with some impressive dumps as well. He doesn't even look like a college player. He's 285 pounds. Zion is such a, yeah, I mean, he's just a force out there. Remember Larry Johnson with UNLV? Yep. I covered Larry for two. I covered him in Vegas. And Larry, before like, all the weightlifting stuff, Larry looked like an NFL linebacker.
Starting point is 00:22:01 Yeah. He looks like an NFL player on a basketball court. Herschel Walker, Larry Johnson, you're like, they're like, yeah, I just do push-ups. Sometimes God touches you with the magic wand, and that kid looks like a nine-year NBA veteran. Well, Zion is incredible, and obviously he gets the, you know, the YouTube highlights with the crazy dunks. But I actually think that R.J. Barrett's going to be the number one. That's what everybody says, yeah. Well, he doesn't get as much attention, you know, because he's from Canada. but he has a lot more experience and he's played internationally.
Starting point is 00:22:31 He played with the Canadian team. And he played at 17 and the under 19 team, international team for Canada. And they are the ones that beat Cala Perry's USA basketball team. They're both number one picks. They're just both coming out in the same year. Right. This is two number one picks. They're both worthy of a number one pick.
Starting point is 00:22:48 And put on a show last night. Oh, God. Yeah, they did. That was fun. Duke's got me fun to watch this year. Yes. They're going to be a little Alabama. We know they're going to win it.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Right. We'll just kind of enjoy the. show. Yeah. We got a lot of that. Warriors, Alabama football, and now Duke. We know who's going to win, but, you know, I can know the end of a movie. I knew Titanic was hitting an iceberg. I still liked the movie. I knew Apollo. I knew Tom Hanks was going to survive. I still love the movie. And you knew that in Mission Impossible. Yeah. By the way, I have moved it up to the second greatest movie of all time behind
Starting point is 00:23:19 Silence of the Lambs. Ahead of Godfather. Silence of the Lambs is the greatest movie of all time. Well, I'm dark. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. I want to get my buddy Nick Wright's opinion on Des Bryant, because Dez is a little flaky for me, but my theory is, I watch that game Sunday, and I think Drew Breeze and Sean Payton beat the Rams, went home.
Starting point is 00:23:42 You know, they went out and got some great food in New Orleans, then they sat down and they watched Gordon and Brady, and they called each other and went, you know, Des Bryant's on the market. Nick Wright via the Coward Global Satellite Network in New York City is joining us. That's kind of my takeaway. I don't think Des is any better today than he was three months ago. What's your takeaway on it? I'm surprised by this.
Starting point is 00:24:03 I think this is great for Des Bryant. I'm not sure if it's great for the Saints. I understand why the Saints would do it. They've got an incredibly productive number one receiver, but their second receiving threat this year is a running back. Their third receiving threat is a tight end who's your age, Colin. And their fourth receiving threat is a rookie who has 12 catches on the year in Treyquan Smith.
Starting point is 00:24:26 I get why they feel they have the need for a number two receiver. And if Dez's biggest issue is generating separation, pair him with the quarterback that you don't need any separation because he's so accurate, he's basically handing you the football. But man, this is a big belief in Sean Payton and their culture, because this right now to me is the Super Bowl favorite in the NFC, and you're bringing in something of a live wire. Maybe they not only saw what happened in New England with Josh Gordon, but they did. saw the team they just played in the Rams, who despite just beating them, the Rams brought in a bunch of live wires this offseason, and it's worked out brilliantly for them. For Des, it's great. For the
Starting point is 00:25:09 Saints, I think it's to be determined. Yeah, that's actually a great point on the Rams. You know what? Josh Gordon's working. If Des works, T.O. better stay by the phone. He may get a phone call here in the next six months. Slow down, Colin. Slow down. Something like that. Okay, so Troy Eichman used two big word yesterday. Disfunction and overhaul. I agree with the dysfunction. I don't think the Cowboys need an overhaul. I think they need a coach. What did you make of Aikman's thoughts? All right. So, Colin, just think of one of the many homes you own across the country. Oh, God. And the Cowboys, listen, they've got a lot of really cool stuff and they might have a pool table. That's their left tackle Tyrant Smith. They've got a really nice theater. That's Zeke
Starting point is 00:25:53 Elliott. They got a pass rusher. That's, I assume, the spa or the pool you have out back. They got two linebackers. They got an all-pro guard. They now have a wide receiver. But they don't have a foundation. That's the culture. They don't have even a ground level. That's the quarterback. And they don't have a coach. So they have everything you need except for the most important things you need. A coach, a quarterback, and a culture. They're like the bizarreo Seattle Seahawks. The Seattle Seahawks have the those three things and that's it, they're four and four. The Cowboys have everything else, but not those three things.
Starting point is 00:26:29 They're three and five. I think that's what Troy was getting at. Yeah, I mean, listen, here's the thing with Jason Garrett. And I see this with Mike McCarthy at Green Bay. I don't think they're bad coaches, but sometimes the world changes. And, oh, Facebook. Oh, oh, online, Instagram. And if you don't embrace it, you look old and outdated.
Starting point is 00:26:52 I look at Jason Garrett. He could be a coach somewhere, but I got to be honest, I watch Dallas's offense, and I see Green Bay's offense. I don't see a lot of motion. I don't see a lot of clever. That's kind of my takeaway. Is that what you see? Well, yeah, I mean, I think both of these coaches, I think Mike McCarthy has achieved the minimum level any competent coach would achieve with Aaron Rogers. I believe that.
Starting point is 00:27:16 I think that we say you win a Super Bowl, you're an all-time great coach. I don't believe that to be the case. Jason Garrett, you say that if he, you know, he could coach a lot of places. If he were to get fired, what's the next job he gets? Head coach at Air Force? Like, I don't know who's lining up to offer Jason Garrett this job again. I don't know who's lining up to ask him in the NFL to be an offensive coordinator. Like, Jason Garrett is very well qualified for the job he has because the Jerry Jones
Starting point is 00:27:51 specter looms over it. But his one calling card has been, since he took over the Cowboys, only the Patriots and the Steelers have fewer losing seasons at zero. He just has the one the year Romo got hurt and Whedon came in. They're going to have a losing season this year with the level of talent on the roster despite DAC's clear limitations. They, like, I think they've got to move on from him. And I know, by the way, Colin, there's almost nothing in your career you regret more. than saying you were wrong about DAC when you were right. You were on the right. It's like you're picking a stock and you abandoned it too early.
Starting point is 00:28:29 You were right about DAC. It just took us 40 games to see it. Speaking of DAC, I made the comparison to Blake Bortles, is that Blake Bortles had the defense. He had the start running back, and he was better running than throwing. And we knew he had a ceiling, and they extended him. And now they're trapped with him. And Jacksonville looks like the fourth best team in their division
Starting point is 00:28:46 with the fourth best quarterback by a mile. I kind of feel DAC and Blake Bortles, that's the connection to me. That's what I see. Am I that far off? No, and I hear Jerry Jones saying we're going to extend Dak. If he extends DAC this offseason, it'll be the most grievous error he's made since he fired Jimmy Johnson or moved on from Jimmy Johnson. Like people in today's NFL where passing's never been more important,
Starting point is 00:29:13 where the teams with the biggest edge are not the teams with the best quarterbacks always. but the teams with the best cheap quarterbacks, the chiefs, the Rams, the Eagles, the Texans, I'm leaving some out. There's a line, I call it the Matt Ryan line. If your quarterback is Matt Ryan's skill level or above, then you can give him the $20-plus million extension. Cam, Philip Rivers, obviously Rogers, Brady, Big Ben, Breeze,
Starting point is 00:29:42 I'm leaving some guys out. But if he's beneath Matt Ryan and you give him that extension, it kills you. That's Derek Carr, that's Matt Stafford, that's Alex Smith, that's that, that's Blake Coyles. That is obviously, Dak, Kurt Cousins is right on the fringe, right? But that is obviously Dak Prescott. You, when you decide to pay a quarterback, what it costs to bring in three quality players, they better be an awesome quarterback. I have no evidence, Dak is an awesome quarterback. So I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you about LeBron. Lakers are four and six. They've got five
Starting point is 00:30:18 close losses. They're third in the league in scoring. A lot more fun to watch this year. Third and field goal percentage. Lousy on defense, but few in the league play it anymore. I think they're where we thought they would be. I look at it tonight if they beat Minnesota. They're five and six.
Starting point is 00:30:34 They beat the crappy teams. They lose to Toronto a very good team and they're competitive with everybody else. I'm okay with where they sit. I don't get the Magic Johnson Luke Walton story. What's your takeaway? The first 10 games. My takeaway is that right now they're getting a version of LeBron that the Cavs got literally until the trade deadline last year. And that's an important date. LeBron last year,
Starting point is 00:31:02 if you remember it, he even said that was the date. The day of the trade deadline, he had a game winning shot. I believe it was against Minnesota. The last 30 games of the year, whatever it was, he was absolutely unreal. Then went on the greatest playoff run we've ever seen. from an individual player. Why is the trade deadline important? With all the change on the team, from the Kyrie trade to the next trade, all of it, what LeBron was doing in the first 50-plus games of the year was seeing what everyone could do, that he was not imposing his will to squeeze out every single win possible because he wanted to see who could do what. I know LeBron's averaging 27, 8, and 8 this year, so it seems like it's same old LeBron. It is not same old
Starting point is 00:31:45 LeBron if you're watching it. I believe that's intentional. He is using this part of the season so they can find out, is Luke Walton the right guy? Who is Brandon Ingram really? What can Lanzo do? Who are the guys we might move at the deadline? And then once the team is set, once they're in a real playoff push, we will see the LeBron we saw in the stretch run last year. He would be, you will not get, they know they're not winning the title this year. It's impossible. No one's beating the Warriors. What they need, this is an information year. And it would, I'm not comparing myself. If when I was filling in for you, Colin, it would not have done me, you or FS1 any benefit. If you came in halfway through every show and walked me through segments, sat on the couch,
Starting point is 00:32:33 like, why don't you do this, Nick? Like, you got to figure out if I could sink or swim. Yeah. I think that's what LeBron's doing with the Lakers, what he's doing with the coach. And so when that's the case, it's an average roster with one awesome player. They're going to have an average record. Well, I like Kyle Kuzma and Nick Wright. So that whole thing made sense to me. That was very good right there. Good talking to you, buddy. Talk to it later, my friend. All right. Hugh Jackson Brown's coach next hour. I like, I've supported Hugh a lot on the show. A lot of people. Remember, he went 116. Yeah, I said, resign him. When they fired him last week, two weeks ago, I said, oh, okay, so Baker Mayfield's better without an offensive coach.
Starting point is 00:33:17 So Hugh Jackson's coming on the show. I have been often on the Hugh Jackson Island. I have supported him through it, and I think he'd be a great head football coach at the college level. Hugh Jackson in the room can sell a program. He's going to be joining us next hour. Coming up next. So I know a lot of people were watching all the politics and stuff last night. Not me.
Starting point is 00:33:39 college football playoff the second one joy was introduced last night and what it said that is coming up next car shopping's confusing a lot of terms dealer price list price invoice new or used here's what's not confusing get clarity save three grand on average on msrp breaking news today that des bryant has signed with the new orleans saints i like the move i think we're seeing it because josh go Jordan has been a nice little fit for the New England Patriots, a guy that's got some maintenance, but Josh can play, and Desk can still play. I've been saying this all the year. He's not a number one receiver. On a bad team, he's a two. On a good team, he's a three. And on the Saints, he'll be their third best receiver. He's not as good as reliable as Ben Watson. He's not Michael
Starting point is 00:34:29 Thomas. They have a big time running game. But, you know, Dallas has, excuse me, the Saints have a great offensive line. I'll make the argument this morning. I think it's the best offensive line currently in football. What does that mean? Des can go deep. Michael Thomas can go deep. That's why the Rams, Brandon Cooks,
Starting point is 00:34:50 that Rams O' line allows Jared Gough like four seconds, not three. Des Bryant can run those 25-plus routes. I think he's a good player. He had 800 yards the last time he played. And that was with Dak, with Drew Brees, can he come in, and can he make, you know, I'm not going to put any numbers on it. Can he make a couple of plays a game? I think he can.
Starting point is 00:35:12 I don't think he will this weekend, but can Des Bryant come in and make a couple of plays a game? Yeah, and that's what you're going to need extra to beat the Eagles, to beat the Rams, to beat Carolina. You're going to need a couple of plays. So we saw Golden Tate go to the Eagles, just a couple of plays. And Dante Fowler went to the Rams. Just give us, Dante Fowler had one. big shot the other day. Just give us a play. Just give us a little something. We're not going to build our offense around you. So I like
Starting point is 00:35:43 as to the Saints. Great coach, great foundation. Mickey Loomis, real GM. You got stability. You got a great offense. We just want just a little more feta cheese on the salad. Just a little sprinkle, just a little sprinkle it on there. I like it. I think it'll be fine. By the way, Cowboys host the Saints Week 13, Thursday Night Football. Do we got that game? We got that game? Man, we got tomorrow, we got Carolina Panthers at the Steelers.
Starting point is 00:36:14 I got Cam at Big Ben tomorrow. In a couple of weeks, I get Des and the Saints against the Cowboys. That Thursday night football, our bosses, I'm glad they got on that. I'm glad we got on that and paid a bunch of money for that. I like that. Tomorrow's great, by the way. Steelers hosting Cam. So college football playoff last night.
Starting point is 00:36:35 I'm driving in this morning. And I was watching some politics last night, so I missed the live version of this. And then I went online and stuff. Alabama's one, Clemson, two, Notre Dame three, Michigan, four. And then Georgia and Oklahoma are real close. And you know what I keep hearing? I drove in the work this morning. Who's going to be number four?
Starting point is 00:36:53 Oh, Michigan, George, Oklahoma. Ooh, you'll be number four. Who cares? That means you play Alabama and get beat by 30. That's like saying, I can't wait to be the eighth seed in the Western Conference. playoffs so I can get swept by the Warriors. Everybody in this thing is a pinata to Alabama.
Starting point is 00:37:11 Now, I will say, the three best teams I've seen this year, Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame in that order. I do think Alabama could make it interesting and I don't count out the possibility of Clemson upsetting Alabama potentially. Notre Dame is just below Clemson.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Could give Clemson a fight. I don't think Notre Dame matches up well with Alabama. I think Clemson's got the athletes and they've got the quarterback and they've got the coach. So I think Clemson, I'm not counting out, I don't want to hear about, you know, they can beat an NFL team. Don't give me that crap. I don't want to hear that stuff.
Starting point is 00:37:46 There is no, the best Canadian football league team would beat Alabama. Don't tell me that garbage. Alabama coming into a national championship game, having blown out everybody, and I got Clemson playing with house money and three NFL defensive linemen up front and a big time quarterback and a big time offense and NFL bodies all over the place playing with house money got nothing to lose against Nick Sabin who they've beaten before and almost beat a second time don't tell me Clemson can't be Alabama not saying they will Notre Dame can't Michigan can't I don't think Georgia can Oklahoma can't Oklahoma plays no defense Georgia secondary is bad to get lit up by Tua
Starting point is 00:38:24 Michigan's offensive line is mediocre at best they would be overwhelmed by Alabama's front but you know I'm hearing this driving in today oh the season's over I don't want to hear that. I don't, no, don't tell me that. Kentucky at Anthony Davis, they were great. Games got close. Don't tell me Alabama can't lose to Clemson. I don't want to hear that. They can lose to Clemson. But, you know, you're talking about, I've watched everybody. Nobody really, nobody really matches up to Alabama perfectly. Clemson and Notre Dame match up okay. Georgia matches up okay, except they're horrible secondary. So that's what you got. But it's, you know, everybody, everybody's talking about,
Starting point is 00:39:09 it could be number four. That's just the first one to get crushed by Alabama. All those teams that would be number four. And I also heard this. Well, what if Alabama loses will they drop out? No, they won't. Alabama can lose a game. They'll still get in.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Nobody else can lose. If Clemson loses a game in their bad conference, they're out. If Notre Dame loses a game, they're out. If any of those other one-loss teams, Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgia, lose a game. They're out. Yeah, Alabama's good enough to lose a game and stay in. They should. I got no problem with that.
Starting point is 00:39:35 If Alabama loses the Georgia on a field goal, because they're not going to get blown out, you know, in the SEC championship game, I'd keep Alabama in. I'd move them down to three or four. Put Clemson one, then you'd have Notre Dame two, then you probably put like, you know, Georgia beat them there three, and then you have Alabama four. And then Clemson, I think my gut feeling is Clemson's going to beat Alabama for the title. That's my gut feeling. And so if Alabama did lose and move to four, Clemson will go to one, they'd still meet.
Starting point is 00:40:01 The game I want to see is Clemson, Alabama. That's the game I want to see. And I think we're going to get it either way. If Alabama goes undefeated, we'll eventually get it. And if Alabama loses the Georgia in his fourth and Clemson goes to what, we'll get it just sooner. But that's the national championship. Whether they play for the final game or the second to last game, Clemson, Alabama feels like the national championship. And I don't think the line's going to be 25.
Starting point is 00:40:23 I think the line's going to be like seven and a half. And I think Clemson playing with House Money has a real shot to beat him. Davos Sweeney's Clemson coach. He joked about, you know, and by the way, he's a smart. dude. He's planted up that nobody should even be discussed with Alabama. We're just glad to have an opportunity at this point to know that we're still in the hunt. But the reality of it, it's like, you know, back when I was a player, you know, they had kind of the big-time bus, and then they had the Roy bus, the rest of y'all.
Starting point is 00:40:52 And, you know, it's kind of Alabama and then the rest of y'all. We're just glad to be on the Roy bus right now and to still have a chance. I don't buy that. No, I don't. And I got to tell you something, that New England Patriots team, don't kid yourself. When you come into a national championship game and you're being, you're telling a bunch of 19-year-olds, you're the best college team ever. You could beat a pro football team. And you got seniors on that team and they're thinking about playing on Sundays and making money. Yesterday, John Middilkoff, our buddy, a former NFL scout said he had a scout tell them, I think Bama could beat the Raiders. No, they couldn't. But you got to remember, you got a bunch of 19, 20-year-old kids. Those are boys, not men.
Starting point is 00:41:31 And they're going to be told to the best team ever. It's, it's, I don't know why we do this. People have been constantly doing this. They've done, did this with the 2001 hurricanes forever. There's men and then there's, there's kids. This is a difference. Yeah, Clemson's got a shot. The only ones that have a shot.
Starting point is 00:41:47 But, you know, if Alabama loses, they should still play in the playoff. Absolutely. If you got the dreaded stuffy nose, cold and flu, try Vicks Synex nasal spray. Vicks Synex nasal spray works up to 12 hours. Hugh Jackson around the corner. Joel Clat 2, it's The Herd. Hour 2, this is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles, iHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Joy Taylor is joining me, Nick Wright, stop by, Hugh Jackson, Browns, Raiders, coach, coordinator for many teams through the years will be joining us in a couple of minutes. Excited for that, a million questions to ask him. You know, I want to start hour 2 talking about the NFL, and I think a lot of businesses, I've been in the media for 30 years. And everybody says they're a risk taker. Everybody loves a risk taker. But they want to see somebody else do it first.
Starting point is 00:42:40 And everybody's like, oh, I want you to take risk. Take it away. Hold on. That network do a risk thing. It didn't work. I don't like risk so much. The NFL's a copycat league. Everybody wants to hire a young coach because Sean McVeigh worked.
Starting point is 00:42:54 Lane Kiffin didn't work. And everybody didn't like young coaches. Now, Sean McVey works. Everybody wants to hire Lincoln Rock. who's like nine years old. And I remember years ago, they had the Wildcat offense. Now think about what the Wildcat offense was. Think about this.
Starting point is 00:43:07 Listen, here's what we're going to do. We're going to snap the ball directly to a running back who can't throw. Good God, you don't want a running back throwing, and he's going to run the offense. Even the Patriot to use some of it. That thing just dissolved, of course, because it was ridiculous. I mean, it's a gadget play. You could use it once or twice a game with like a Tim Tebow guy. But the Wildcat offense for about a year and a half was a thing.
Starting point is 00:43:29 And all of a sudden, everybody caught onto it, and all the smart NFL coaches got on to it, and everybody then went, God, this thing is stupid. Let's just get a better quarterback. Okay, now nobody uses it. And so my whole point is, Des Bryant. I think that the saint sat down Sunday night, and they watched Josh Gordon, and they're like, well, you know, Belichick and Brady, and they bring on this guy with a little bit of maintenance, and it kind of works. And we got Mickey Loomis, and we got Drew Breeze.
Starting point is 00:43:59 and we've got a good culture here, and Dez's a little high maintenance, and I think it would work. I don't think if Josh Gordon, if Josh Gordon and Brady Sunday night were screaming at each other, I don't think Des Bryant's a saint. But I've watched every snap in New England this year, and every week Tom trusts him a little more,
Starting point is 00:44:17 just a little. And I think Des Bryant first two weeks, Dez Bryant week three, ooh, Des Bryant week four, oh, we got something here. And that's all it takes. The worst team in the league, Buffalo, beat Minnesota handily this year in Minnesota.
Starting point is 00:44:33 This isn't college football. It's inches not feet. And can Dez get those feet in bounds and give you the extra inch? And that's all it takes to beat the Rams, beat the Eagles, beat the Saints, beat the Falcons. So I like it. And with that, I want to bring in a man I've watched for years. I've known people who've known him. Hugh Jackson on our show today, a real pleasure for me.
Starting point is 00:44:55 I have said through the years there's a handful of NFL guys that should never discount college football and I'll get into that in about 10 minutes. How are you? I'm good. How are you doing? Pew, it's great to meet you. It's great to have you on the show. Glad to be here. Let's start with Des. He was in your facility. And I may be full of hooey,
Starting point is 00:45:14 but I do think the Gordon thing makes it easier to get the Des thing. You had Des, why didn't you make the move? Well, we just, you know, as an organization at that time, didn't feel like it was the right fit. You know, and I think also, in fairness to Des, I didn't think he felt like it was the right fit at that time. You know, sometimes those, the both sides have to come together. Right.
Starting point is 00:45:32 And it's got to work for everybody. And at that time, it just didn't work out. Yeah, I mean, you had a new quarterback and a young quarterback. Now, similarly, I didn't think Josh Gordon and New England would work. I came out and I said, oh, boy, listen, when you get, when there's too many things on the periphery here, I just don't think it's going to work. I get Cleveland. And at the time, I'm like, I don't want Josh Gordon with Baker.
Starting point is 00:45:54 I don't feel this is good. So I didn't mind your move, and I didn't get New England's move. it's kind of working. Let's go back to the Josh Gordon thing. You let him go. Why? Well, again, you know, again, as an organization, we made a decision to move forward and move on. And in honesty, I think it's great for Josh. I think Josh needed to change the scenery. I think everything that had happened to him happened in Cleveland. And the organization did anything and everything that it could to help him be the best version of himself. It just didn't work out. So we moved on and we wished Josh well.
Starting point is 00:46:25 And obviously, Josh is doing great things. I'm not going to put you in a compromising situation. I have supported you. I have said before I think the problem in Cleveland is not coaching its ownership. And I'm not going to put you in that spot because that's my opinion. And I don't think coaches should have to comment about owners because you have further employment down the road. But I will say that I said on the air two weeks ago that I had been told through sources I trust that you liked Wentz loved him, that you liked Deshaun Watson loved him. and then T.J. Hushman Zada came on my show a day later and said this.
Starting point is 00:47:01 Number one, I knew he wanted Wins two years ago. I knew he wanted Watson last year. Me and Hugh talked, when he was in Baltimore, we talk about players. When he was in Atlanta, we talk about players. When he was in Cleveland, we talked about players prior to each and every draft. And he straight up said, I love Carson Wentz. Dude, he loved Deshaun. He loved him. but you don't get that choice.
Starting point is 00:47:25 That choice, you lobbied for it, though, right? You were in a room lobbying. Oh, you always lobby. But at the end of the day, we make a decision as an organization. You be collaborative. That's where you work. You do what you think is best for the organization. But owners don't get fired.
Starting point is 00:47:41 You do. That's part of it. Well, you know, I mean, Hugh, I'm not going to lie. I am not mature enough. I would be a little bitter if I lobbied for stuff. You didn't take him. they star against for down the street, how can you not have a little bitterness? You know what, Colin, I mean, I am excited that I was one of 32.
Starting point is 00:48:00 You know, I was very privileged and honored to be the head coach in Cleveland. And when I look back at it, it just didn't work out. You know, I think why didn't really that matter, you know, rather I did get this, didn't get that. None of that matters at this point. I think today where I am, they've moved forward. I have to move forward. I'm grateful for the time.
Starting point is 00:48:19 The fans have been outstanding. As a matter of fact, my flight over here, There was fans in the airport, and they were outstanding. And I need to take the opportunity to tell them thank you, because truly all I ever wanted to do was bring winning to Cleveland, but at the end of the day, I wasn't able to hold up my end of the bargain. I'm not a fan of hard knocks. As a consumer, I get it.
Starting point is 00:48:39 I think it's unfair to coaching staffs. If you put a camera in my house, and you see stuff my wife's throwing at me, you'd think we were crazy people. Okay, I don't like it. I think reality shows you start acting, young players start acting, It changes people. I didn't think you or the organization looked great. It took me to places that I don't need to see.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Did you push back on that? We always push back on those things. But I think when I looked at it, again, I didn't see it the way everybody else saw it. You know, because in real time, I think it was totally different. I think the optics of what people see are totally different of what really happens as is happening. You know, all that stuff is put together. They're trying to tell a story. And sometimes they can tell the wrong story.
Starting point is 00:49:21 Get it. Yeah. So, I mean, there's a moment with you and Haley. And, listen, Todd's reputation. He's an intense dude. He's been a head coach. He wants to be a head coach again. Is it, just show 15 seconds of it. Roll the tape. Our team has to get mentally tougher and be able to fight through the that we've got to fight through. We've got to change this drastically. And if we've got guys that haven't done shit sitting around doing nothing, you know, I just don't know how we're going to do it. Well, I respect you saying that. I mean, I used to sit in the same chair. Let me finish. Whoa, let me finish.
Starting point is 00:49:55 I used to sit in the same chair as you guys said in. And I used to feel the same way. I just want to kill them, okay? Until all of a sudden, I sat in this chair, and then they're not there. Say it again, but the chair I sit in, a little different in the chair you guys said. I get to watch from a different lens. I'll talk me a long time ago. You know, what is it out that will give it to me?
Starting point is 00:50:14 If you're a team, you do whatever the hell you want. If you're a team, you do it the hell you want. Okay, so this one's mine. So that's just the way it's going to be. Now, do you regret that? It looked like he was not happy with it. And what do you make of that now you watch it? No, I still think, you know, everybody needs to understand the conversation prior to that.
Starting point is 00:50:32 It was already explained why we had taken guys out. So I was a little surprised that we were even going back through it again. You know, we made decisions because of data that we found that if we monitor how guys practice, it cuts down on soft tissue injuries. So here we are again discussing. and I understand where Todd's coming from, he's new. You know, so maybe the first meeting, maybe he didn't hear everything. Maybe he didn't understand it all.
Starting point is 00:50:56 Right. At that time, I needed to move forward because what we were doing, we were going to do. We wasn't going to change. We had too many, too much of the data that said to us, our players, we don't pull muscles if we do it this way. So everybody else that was there understood it. He was new. He caught that piece of it. And so really, I was trying to make fun of it.
Starting point is 00:51:15 And that's why I say, Al, what do we always say? because that's something between me and Al Saunders and the rest of the guys had been there. Hey, look, here, you know, when you get your own team, you get to do whatever you want. That's all that was. Baker Mayfield, I didn't like the off-field nonsense and a lot of the graveting stuff.
Starting point is 00:51:30 I was more of a darnald guy, but I did say that Darnold would lead the NFL in interceptions. He played hero ball at USC. He's two years younger, half the start's a Baker. Be that as it may. You like Baker enough because you can tell that you like him enough and he can do some things. He's accurate as half.
Starting point is 00:51:47 with a football. He told a great ball. What was the ultimate selling point? If there was one thing they're all lined up, because Donald's a little bigger, probably a little better athlete, you know, he's a, you know, he's a big, he's played linebacker in high school, and he made some great, he didn't have quite the system, but was there one thing about Baker that when he was out of the room, you could like or not like, but what was the deal with the deal closer for you? The deal closer for me is I've watched him impact the people around him. He's able to make people play better than what they can play. I mean, he has an internal fire within him that is unmatched, in my opinion. The guy is built the right way. And if you're going to turn around an organization
Starting point is 00:52:28 that has been losing, a guy's got to be able to handle that. You can't just walk in there because all of a sudden you become what that organization is. And I don't think he will ever let the organization what's gone on there affect him. I think he will rise above it. Now, there is a moment, a piece of tape. It was early in the camp. This was one of my favorite moments. where you as the veteran coach and the kid. And let me play this. What's up, my son? I guess that's what you said when you said it was different.
Starting point is 00:52:54 I tried to tell you. And what time do you normally get up in the morning? I was a little bit later this morning. No, no, I know. But what time do you normally come over? Depends on me, sir. Huh? Try and get in about two hours before.
Starting point is 00:53:05 You ever come in with your boy five? He does his own little workouts in the morning. Where's your own little workout in the morning? Huh? Where's your own little workout in the morning? You start starting your... career how you want to you see what I'm saying it's a competition all in everything you do baby you know how to do it why not you know what I'm I saw that and I went oh oh Baker's already
Starting point is 00:53:32 shown up late having a bagel in the morning come on coach that's not what it was at all what was that no I think what I was trying to do is he was already had a process to me let's make sure it's the best you're competing against Tyrod Taylor so So I made a statement in there that, hey, if you're going to compete on the football field, compete off the field, compete in everything that you do. It's the meeting room everywhere. That's what that was about. I think Baker has had a really good system. But boy, if there's more you could do, do as much as you could.
Starting point is 00:54:03 I was just challenging him that way. I think there was nothing wrong. It was nothing that he was doing wrong or anything like that. Again, that's the moment that people catch. And that's what was said. And all it was was, hey, here's an opportunity for you to do more compete. go take a shot at it. You like that whole grabbing himself stuff in college, though?
Starting point is 00:54:22 Come on, I got to hate that, Hugh. He got swag. So why did you? You tell me why you hated it. I don't like the police video. I don't think Russell Wilson would have that. I don't think Andrew Luck would have that. I don't like grabbing junk.
Starting point is 00:54:33 I think quarterback is an extension of coach. I think, I always use a term. One of the reasons I have a problem with Trump, he's not presidential. I like my quarterbacks to be quarterbackial. Okay? So Jeff George? won my cup of tea. Johnny Mansell, not my cup of tea. I think there are times that Russell Wilson had a player drop a touchdown in the end zone Sunday.
Starting point is 00:54:55 Made a hell of a throw. And for one second, Russell was angry. And then it snapped on the quarterback of a franchise, $2 billion franchise. There are times Baker's not quarterback heel. Is that fair? Well, I think, you know, I understand where you're coming from. But I think we're talking about college and young men, you know, and I think again, everybody makes some mistakes sometimes. But I think, I know when I dove into it, I understood
Starting point is 00:55:22 it better. I think the young man learned from it. I don't think that's who he is. Now, he has a swagger. He has a fire and he has a desire, and he's trying to beat you. There's no question about that. I will never take that away from it. Can everybody do things better? Yes, we all can. But that young man is a quarterback, and he's going to be a really good quarterback
Starting point is 00:55:40 in the national football league. All right, stick around. I got to ask you about I got the Levian Bell situation. We got the Gruden situation. Oh, wow. We got all sorts of stuff. Bring it on. I think you should be a college head coach at a really big school, so you don't go anywhere.
Starting point is 00:55:54 Okay. We got Hugh Jackson here. More of it coming up. Plus, Joel Clatt, end of the hour. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Sunday, it's a great slate of NFL action highlighted by Drew Brees and the 7-1 Saints, taking on Andy Dalton and the Bengals or Philip Rivers and the Chargers. Chargers battling the Raiders.
Starting point is 00:56:13 It's all on Fox in the Fox Sports app. Check local listings for the game in your area. That's got upset written all over it. Bengals at home, desperate, big person. Say how many big games can the Saints play? They go to Baltimore and then they come home. They're just Saints have been in like four big games in a row. Vikings, Rams.
Starting point is 00:56:31 Now you go on the road, Dome Team Cold. Watch out for Cincinnati. You've played them enough times. They got all sorts of personnel. Oh, no, they do. The Bengals are, you know, they'll be laying in a cut waiting. Yep. All right, John Gruden right now.
Starting point is 00:56:43 You know, we're pretty brutal in the, media. Once the avalanche starts, we all just pile on it. And you were in that, you were in that little bit of that tornado where, oh, Hugh Jackson's no good. Get him out of here. Now, John Gruden, you've been, we're starting to pile on, John. Do you have any sympathy for him? Yes, get off my guy. I mean, you like it? That's my guy. Yeah, that guy taught me a lot of football. He did. We're at the University of Pacific together. We were office mates. So I do sympathize with him, because I know what it's like when you're trying to go in and change a culture and trying to build it in your vision. And he's had, obviously, to make some decisions, to do things, to get it to
Starting point is 00:57:20 where he wants it to be. It's going to take time. I mean, none of those things just happen overnight, even though we all want them to happen fast. It's going to take time. But this guy is still a really good football coach. He's still the same coach he was. What's his greatest strength? Offense. The guy can run an offense and he can lead a football team. There's no question about that. I think guys would follow him because he just has that inner strength. And believe me, he's going to come out of this. I understand where he is right now. And regardless of what the record is,
Starting point is 00:57:49 I just know what kind of football coach is and what kind of person he is. Hugh Jackson joining us. Hugh, you know, you've watched Belichick, and he was in Cleveland for a while. So we all know Bill's really a smart academic guy. I mean, his mom spoke seven languages. Bill's just an academic. He's a really adaptable guy. You know, Brady's funny.
Starting point is 00:58:08 So Brady, a six-round guy, didn't look the part. Right. I am just a believer in this thing that early failure creates the metal. Russell Wilson, by the way, had to transfer to Wisconsin because his coach at NC State said, we're going with Mike Glennon. And Aaron Rogers had to go to a junior college. And Big Ben, Ohio State didn't want him. And Drew Brees, nobody wanted him in Texas.
Starting point is 00:58:32 Is that the secret sauce with Brady? How good of a thrower is he? How good is his arm? Like, if you were scouting Tom today, like, What is he great? Is his arm underrated? I think it's underrated. And I think he's improved himself tremendously over the years. I tried to get Tom to leave Michigan and come to Cal when I was at Cal.
Starting point is 00:58:53 So that was a long story. But we wasn't able to persuade him to leave. He stayed. He was not starting to Michigan. Absolutely. And so we thought we had him. Myself and Steve Mariucci, we thought we had him coming. What did you like about him then?
Starting point is 00:59:05 Well, because one, he was from, that's where he was from. You know, it's from the Bay Area. but his stature and his ability to throw the football. You know, you didn't see the athleticism that way, you know, but boy, he could throw football, and you can tell he had fire. He had fire. He wanted to win, and that's truly what it's all about. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:25 What with Belichick, this is, you know, the NFL's not built for dynasties. College is. You get the best recruiting class every year. The more you win, the better players you get. In the NFL goes the opposite. They want you to have, you know, there's just, there's limitations on what you can do. Is Bill smarter than everybody? I mean, is it owner, Brady?
Starting point is 00:59:44 I mean, he didn't win before Tom. When you go up against Belichick, what's the one thing that always concerns you? He's going to take your strength away, period. On offense and defense and special teams, he's going to make, you got to work. Obviously, we all work, but you're going to have to find different ways to do things because he's going to definitely negate your strength.
Starting point is 01:00:05 Well, I think everybody tries to do that. He just has a way of doing it. I mean, we're talking about arguably, one of the best coaches that's ever coached in this league and one of the best quarterbacks too. So they have a really good thing going. And I think he's done a tremendous job. Mike McCarthy's in a different situation.
Starting point is 01:00:20 So Aaron's great and he just got a big contract. They don't fire quarterbacks. Mike McCarthy's a very good football coach. But, I mean, listen, you can see it on TV. There's attention. Aaron's taking a few passive aggressive shots at the organization. Pat Riley used to say, Hugh, no matter how good you are, after 10 years, you're just Charlie Brown's teacher, your noise, players tune you out.
Starting point is 01:00:43 Is it possible that Mike McCarthy is a real coach, but that after eight, nine years with Aaron, maybe they're wearing each other out. If you ever been in a situation where you kind of feel players tune out? Oh, they do. I mean, I think we all know that they do. But you said it first that Mike is an extremely good football coach. You think so?
Starting point is 01:01:04 I know he is. He is, and he's very good at what he does. And we're talking about one of the better quarterbacks in the National Football League. They will work through that. Whatever that is. You think they will? I think they will.
Starting point is 01:01:13 Because in the end, you have two men who are driven towards winning. And I think they both want to do everything they can to get the Packers back to where they should be. And I think when you have that kind of like mindness and they have the mindset to fix it, then they'll do it together. Lavin Bell. What do you do? Multiple teammates now have said, we like James Connor. They're first in their division. I got Big Ben, Juju Smith-Schuster.
Starting point is 01:01:40 should have drafted him too he was good Antonio Brown they have two pro offensive linemen heck of a pass rush they figured their defense out and now I got Levian Bell and I'm not sure how he plays in the locker room
Starting point is 01:01:55 Hugh what would you do well I think obviously I think Mike Tomlin has done a great job you know it's not about the people who are not there it's about the team that's there right now we don't coach the players that's on the team we'll deal with all the other things as they happen. And right now, as you see the pitchburg Steelers, they're playing really good football.
Starting point is 01:02:15 They've done an outstanding job from start. You played them twice. They were a different team. Yes. They were a different team. What did they do the second time? I think obviously when you come out of training camp, you think your team is ready to do certain things. And then you look and go, uh-uh, we need to press on some of these other things and get them better. So I've watched that team improved from week one to week eight. Pass rush, all of it. Pass rush, the way they ran the football. just they improve overall. And that's what you want your team to do, just keep getting better during the season,
Starting point is 01:02:43 not take a step back, is to keep moving forward, and that's what the Steelers are doing. You know, finally, there are, I told Herm Edwards this years ago, and I work with him. I said, Herm, you could work in college. You'd be good in the living room.
Starting point is 01:02:56 And I said, you'd build a staff, you got great energy. And I've said this before. I thought Gruden would work in college. I don't think Belichick would. I don't think he'd deal with boosters. I don't think Parcells would have worked.
Starting point is 01:03:10 There are guys, Tony Dungey would have worked in college. He would relate to the kids. I think you would work. There's big jobs, don't even need to name them, one right down the street. Would you consider college? I would always consider college. I think coaching's coaching. And obviously leading men, whether they're grown men or young men.
Starting point is 01:03:30 This is truly what it's all about. So you like the idea of that. Oh, I do. By the way, I don't think it's any worse dealing with. with the NCAA than crazy owners. I mean, billionaires are different cats. They are. They are. So, I mean, you've dealt with a few
Starting point is 01:03:44 billionaires. Yes, I have. I don't think it's the easiest job in the world. Hey, it was great meeting you today. Thank you. Absolutely pleasure. Hugh Jackson. Thank you so much. Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. Dallas Week is always a big deal
Starting point is 01:04:00 in Philadelphia for the Eagles and for their fans, and apparently it also rubs off on the players. Jason Kelsey had some fighting words for Cowboys fans this morning. Oh, boy. Everything's heightened. I would say mostly I just don't think that a lot of players, in particular me, just don't really like the franchise of the organization, what it stands for, what it's always stood for.
Starting point is 01:04:22 Just never really appreciated what the organization and what its fans really stood for, you know. A lot of fair weather people from across the country that just kind of fell in love because they're winners instead of having any type of emotional connection to the team whatsoever. What is wrong with being a fair weather fan? Everybody always gets a I'm a true fan. What does it matter? If I like a team, I like a team. I didn't like New England before Tom Brady.
Starting point is 01:04:47 I like New England now with Tom Brady because they win a bunch of games. What's wrong with being fair weather? I like fair weather. I like snowy weather. I got to tell you, I got to agree. And before everyone starts talking about Miami, I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so don't talk to me about fan bases, okay?
Starting point is 01:05:04 The Steelers have probably, I think they have the strongest fan base of any team in the NFL. Steelers? Yes. Yes. You can argue, you know, the Chiefs and the Raiders or the Packers, whatever, but to me, the Steelers do. The bigger point is, so what if people are a fair weather? Sports is entertainment. Yes.
Starting point is 01:05:24 Okay? So if I go to a movie and I sit through half the movie and the movie is terrible, I am perfectly within my right to get up and walk out of that terrible movie. Yeah. Because I'm paying for entertainment. This is not the law. Stop being the fan police. Yes, just like whatever you like.
Starting point is 01:05:40 For the record, is I have friends who are fans of Liverpool, Real Madrid. They didn't grow up with them. They weren't born in Barcelona. They watched them on TV and they're like, oh, that team's wild. And there are sports I didn't like that I like now. There are sports I used to love that I'm bored with now. You can move in and out of sports anyway you want. It doesn't make you a bad sports fan.
Starting point is 01:06:00 It has nothing to do with who you are as a person. People get so dramatic about sports. this. But I will say what? I will say the Cowboys fans, fan base is very diverse and it is worldwide as we know because they have the biggest
Starting point is 01:06:16 brand in sports. But I think what plays into the whole Cowboys mystique is that people love to hate the Cowboys also. Sure. They're Polaroids. They have the top three rated games so far this year. Yes. And they're boring, by the way. It's a boring
Starting point is 01:06:32 team. Their offense is boring. They've been mostly bad and dysfunctional. They've had the Cowboys, Panthers, Week 1. Seahawks, Packers, yeah. Seahawks and the Cowboys, and then the Seahawks and the Cowboys and the Redskins. And they're not the Akeman Cowboys. They're the boring Cowboys, and they're still getting a huge rating, so that's okay. You don't have anything to say about Philly talking too much?
Starting point is 01:06:55 No, it's just, it's Philadelphia, it's a tough blue-collar town. If you're not one of us, you're bum, it's Philadelphia. They got a chip on their shoulder. They think everybody hates them. It's Philadelphia. I actually like it. I like a little trash talk leading up to a game and makes it better. You got to sell the fight a little bit, especially after that Cowboys loss.
Starting point is 01:07:16 So I like it. Get all the Cowboys fans fired up. So with NFL offensive numbers exploding, it's not a surprise. And a lot of players on pace for big numbers this season. In fact, five quarterbacks are currently on pace to throw for over 5,000 yards, which is the same number of players who have done it in the history. of the NFL. Yes.
Starting point is 01:07:35 If that helps you break down all the offensive numbers that are exploding this year. And Rathusberger, who's one of those five on Pace to do that, was asked if that feat is still impressive. It's still a pretty big deal.
Starting point is 01:07:46 I know I've never got there and a lot of guys haven't, so it's probably still a pretty big number, but it seems like there might be some guys on, a few guys on Pace to get it this year. Yeah, I mean, listen, this is why I don't care about stats. Like, baseball is lowered and risen the mound,
Starting point is 01:08:00 raised the mound, and lowered it like 26 times. hockey's got different rules than 10 years ago. The NBA now is a three-ball league. I've never been into stats. How can you be into stats when Babe Ruth played a different game than Bryce Harper? Well, yeah. I mean, things are going to change.
Starting point is 01:08:16 I mean, basketball is trending towards more offense. Football is trending towards more offense. It's just the way that it's going. Drew Breed has done this 5,000 or 5,000 times. Five times. He's done it five times. And Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, Matt Ryan, and Kirk Cousins are the other four that are on pace to throw it for 5,000 yards this season.
Starting point is 01:08:32 So this is going to become less of a big deal than it was in the past. But I still think it's a... It's something. It's something, for sure. Finally, last night was a show. Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett put it on. Yeah. It had a 118-84 win over Kentucky.
Starting point is 01:08:49 It's only one game, but it's kind of tough to not crown Duke, the national champion after watching that. It was something. I'll tell you there. Duke scored 33 points and Zion added 28. Duke didn't want to do it. a one and done. And Mike Shoshchevsky initially said, I don't like one and done. And then he started losing games to people who like one and done. And then Mike Shishkevsky is smarter or older guy. He said, you know what? We're going to embrace this one and done. And now they do it
Starting point is 01:09:13 better than everybody else. I mean, that was just, that was unbelievable last night. Just watching how they did it with such ease. Zion is a complete force. I mean, let's look at this. He's just, what are you going to do? He weighs 285 pounds. There's only like five guys. And that's Kentucky. Kentucky's probably the second best team. And they blew him out. Yeah. And RJ Barrett is going to be, I think, the number one pick. Everyone's focusing on Zion. Zion obviously could be a number one pick also, but R.J. Barrett has a ton of experience playing internationally against older players. And he actually beat the U.S. team. He plays for the Canadian national team. He doesn't get as much to love because, you know, he's from Canada,
Starting point is 01:09:53 but you have to watch for him. Because seeing what Luca Donchich is doing this year, I mean, averaging 19, 4, and 6, you know, front offices are going to be paying attention to that. So he's a shooter in sports. Fun to watch. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News.
Starting point is 01:10:13 Joel Clat, feisty, Joel Clat is around the corner. And I've got, I have, because that story broke on Des Bryant, I have so much stuff here I have not gotten to. It's incredible.
Starting point is 01:10:26 I haven't even gotten about a third of my, a quarter. Look at this. I got all this show that we press. for and I don't even have time to get to it today. So let's just, um, you're right over there? Seriously. I did want to show this.
Starting point is 01:10:41 By the way, you know how like my dad used to say this, that most of the big decisions in your life will be made when you're not in the room. Everybody's nice to your face. But my dad always said, the big decisions like your employment will be decided when you are not in the room. it matters. Get along with people. Be a good guy.
Starting point is 01:11:09 So everybody always says, Belichick, oh my God, Aaron Rogers is the most amazing. So here's Belichick last week, the week before he played Aaron Rogers. When Aaron Rogers could hear it, he was in the room. Go ahead. I mean, he's a great player. He does everything well.
Starting point is 01:11:28 Very mobile in the pocket. Extends plays. Really good vision down the field. uses a cadence well as a good situational player. It's one of the great quarterbacks. And National Football League, no question about it. Does everything good. Oh, everything.
Starting point is 01:11:46 Oh, really? Well, it's interesting. What does he say when Aaron Rogers is not in the room? Sidelined mic this past game. Here's what Belichick said about Aaron Rogers. The pass rush is what we want. We just got to keep doing it. Hey, we got to keep doing it for 60 minutes.
Starting point is 01:12:07 The pass rush is what we want, all right? Keep working the shit out of those guards. Keep in the pocket. He's trying to throw us two interceptions now. We're going to get one. All right, he's just lobbing it up there. That's a great job. Keep pressing up.
Starting point is 01:12:20 If he runs backwards, all right, then run him out of bounds. That's great. They're just lobbing him up there. That's funny. He had best quarterback of all time. That's secretly Mike Belichick. The guy's just throwing it up there. He's loving it up there.
Starting point is 01:12:36 He's already thrown his two interceptions. Aaron Rogers isn't perfect. We have a problem saying breeze is too short. Matt Ryan didn't have a good enough arm. And Cam's not precise enough. And Brady's not an athlete. And Philip Rivers is a weird delivery. And luck's no good overrated.
Starting point is 01:12:52 Oh, he's just lobbing him up there. It's okay to criticize Aaron Rogers. You're not a hater. Just adding context to it. cranky Joel Klatte. What do they make of the college football ratings? That's coming up next. It's cold and flu season.
Starting point is 01:13:05 Vick, Synex nasal spray. 12 hours at works when congestion strikes. Vick, sinex nasal spray. Joel Klatte, the voice of college football in our network. All right, Clatster. What's up? Usually you and I argue there's always got to be something I disagree with. So can we both agree with this?
Starting point is 01:13:20 Alabama is the best team in the country? Yes. Okay. Who is the second best team in the country? Clemson. All right, we agree on that. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 01:13:27 Who's the third best team? team in the country? I mean, I would say Michigan right now. Now that Notre Dame beat them. Yeah, I mean, that was a long time ago. Michigan's playing better football right now. They just beat Penn State basically to death. These boat racing. I've watched... Notre Dame has struggled during this last few weeks. Remember, they struggled against Pitt. They didn't play great against Northwestern. I think they might have some trouble down the stretch here with Syracuse in Yankee Stadium. That's going to be a neutral sight game in New York. What if Michigan and Oklahoma went out?
Starting point is 01:14:01 Who would you put in? Between the two? Yeah. I would put Michigan ahead of Oklahoma. What if Notre Dame and Oklahoma went out? Who would you put in? Well, Notre Dame, because they are undefeated. I think Notre Dame with one loss would lose an argument to either Michigan or Oklahoma.
Starting point is 01:14:17 Georgia, I think, is going to get a second loss to Alabama. So I think what you're waiting for, if you're Oklahoma or anybody that's trying to get into the top four, you're waiting for the Ohio State Michigan game and the Syracuse Notre Dame game. I don't even think Alabama, Georgia is. going to be that much of a contest. When you model it out, okay? So I do this thing where it's called plus minus. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:35 Okay, what do you on average give up versus what the opposing team averages? Okay. And Alabama basically gives up about 15 less points than what you average offensively. That's what they do as a defense. And then if you were to do that same model out with Georgia, what you would get is about a 16-point game between Georgia and Alabama. Two touchdowns. So I don't think Alabama is going to lose.
Starting point is 01:15:00 and even if they do, there's argument that they would get into that top four. Oh, I put them in. So Ohio State and Syracuse is everybody's best bet. What do you mean? What I mean? For an in Oklahoma. If you're looking for an in, you know, maybe it's West Virginia that wins a couple of games there at the end. Or Washington State that's looking for a prayer.
Starting point is 01:15:17 I think those are the only two games that are going to shake up this top four is Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, Michigan. Other than that, Alabama Clemson, they should send them invites right now. I think those two teams are in the playoff. I think you're right. I think Alabama. And by the way, I don't buy this Alabama could be an NFL team. No, they couldn't.
Starting point is 01:15:33 They couldn't be the best Canadian football league team. Clemson. Hey, maybe. Pierre St. John left tackle for the Aragonauts is quite a player, Sacrebleu. Okay, all I'm saying is this, when I watch Clemson and I watch Bama,
Starting point is 01:15:47 a bunch of Sunday guys, I look at those two teams, Alabama comes in being told that the best team ever, no losses. Clemson's playing with house money. Dabo Sweeney and that staff, know exactly what Alabama does.
Starting point is 01:16:01 I think Clemson's got a real, but you do that plus minus thing you do. Yeah, when I put them into that kind of like equation, it spits out a three point game. Okay. Which is the closest game that Alabama would have. They would be a two touchdown favorite against everybody in the country or more. And Clemson's the only one that spits out basically a three point game. Okay, so you do this. This is the clack computer at home.
Starting point is 01:16:21 Yeah. It's your washer and dryer. It's the plus minus, right? How much do you score versus what your opponent is constantly giving up? Alabama against Notre Dame, what's the spread? Oh gosh, it would be about 20. Alabama, Michigan. It would be 14, right at the two touchdown mark?
Starting point is 01:16:36 Alabama, Oklahoma. It would be 16, and it would be right now what I have it is at 50 to 34. Alabama, Georgia. It's about 17 right now. And Alabama Clemson. Three. Okay. So don't tell me they're better than the Raiders.
Starting point is 01:16:53 Is Clemson better than the Raiders? No, no, they're not. Clemson has the only shot. Remember now, Clemson is balanced. I think that's what Alabama could potentially struggle with. Clemson has the number four scoring offense, the number four scoring defense. And this is a team right now that's leading the country in rushing yards per play against
Starting point is 01:17:10 and rushing yards per play four. So they're winning the line of scrimmage at all times, running the football and stopping the run. They do it better than anybody in the country on a per play basis. That's a huge feather in their cap. And then you look at what they're doing against an egregiously bad ACC right now. But what are they doing? What they're supposed to be doing?
Starting point is 01:17:28 Crushing people. four games, they've won by an average of 51 points. By an average of 51 points over a four game stretch, they're playing unbelievably well right now. Let me give credit to somebody. Now, we both like Harbaugh. Yep. Okay. And when all these critics of Harbaugh were out there, there were two right-thinking Americans.
Starting point is 01:17:44 Two, Joy. Two, in the whole world. The whole, we were the only two in the whole world. Everyone was out on Harbaugh. On the planet. They were flying banners over the stadium. Jim was out on Jim, except for us. Yeah, a couple of winners here.
Starting point is 01:17:56 That's right. Okay. Let me say something. Ryan Kelly, private school, cold, rural, no JCs, religious overtones, academically hard. Notre Dame winning 11 games to me is more impressive than Bama winning the title. I'm dead serious. Interesting. I think he's done a great job, a great job.
Starting point is 01:18:21 Going undefeated is really hard. By the way, they play out of conference. Michigan, Stanford, NFL players on those teams. And then they have the ACC relationship, and the ACC is historically bad this year. I mean, historically bad. Let's give Kelly some love. Kelly is doing a great job. And he's also made a couple of decisions this year that have changed the course of their season.
Starting point is 01:18:42 Benching Brandon Wimbush and going with Ian Book has improved them 15 points per game. 15 points per game. That's just a coaching decision. They're also doing a lot of really good things on the ground, even minus their best offensive linemen who got injured earlier this year. and two guys that were in the first round last year, McGlenshy and Quentin Nelson. So they're all of a sudden down three offensive linemen from a year ago, and guess what they're still doing?
Starting point is 01:19:06 Running the ball. They can play really solid defense with Jerry Tilleri. I like Notre Dame a lot. I don't think that they're going to lose, so I think that they're going to go to the playoff. I think the best bet for somebody else, like, oh, you, if you're waiting for Notre Dame to lose, I think their best bet to lose is probably Syracuse and Yankee Stadium.
Starting point is 01:19:23 Dino Baber's a great coach. And they score a lot of points. They're averaging over 40 points. a game Syracuse is, so maybe if all of a sudden you get a turnover or two and now Notre Dame can't catch up, I think that's the blueprint to beat the Irish. I like this whole, let's go back to the clat, you're like an odds maker. Yeah, it's a plus minus system. So basically I have this huge and it allows me. Actually, yes, along with one of our guys here named Steve Owens, who does a great job in helping me in research. And what we do is basically we plug in on average. So here's a,
Starting point is 01:19:53 for instance, let's say Oklahoma scores 50 points on you and you on average. And you on average give up 25. Well, then they get a plus 25 value for that game. And then you average out what's your plus minus over the course of the year in scoring offense, scoring defense, total yards, offensive defense, and then rush and pass. And you can get a good sense of what teams are dominant in what areas and then what matchups are bad for certain teams. Here's the things that you're going to see. Oklahoma is the best offensive team in the country, in the country, by all those plus minus statistics. They're also really bad on defense. Muffle. Really bad on defense.
Starting point is 01:20:29 Alabama and Clemson are the only two that are consistently strong across the board in every category. Even Michigan, who I think is a great team, will have a plus or minus 96th category. You know, they're 96 in the country and plus minus passing yards per game. Well, that's not very good. So they're basically averaging 50 yards less per game throwing the ball than what their opponent averages giving up. That's not very good. So that plus or minus will give you an expected score outcome like I was talking. get boat race by Alabama. I don't love their offense.
Starting point is 01:21:00 I think they would get beat by 14 points because that's what my model says. Well, I got a supermodel at home. And she says 20. You know what else you got? A book. By the way, Davos. Daveno Sweeney doesn't like me. Can we have dabble.
Starting point is 01:21:14 Why does DaBow not like you? At the end of the day, we left no doubt tonight. You know, we wanted to play Alabama because now you all got to change your stories. You got to change the narrative. You got to mix it up. You know, the guy that called us a fraud. Ask Alabama for a fraud. Was his name Colin Coward?
Starting point is 01:21:36 I don't know. I'm never met him. Don't know. I'm asking him if... Wait, a fraud or a frog? Joe Clack. Come on. You're not going to hold a grudge over that. That was two years ago.
Starting point is 01:21:45 He's a good dude, sir. He's decent. Hour 3 live in Los Angeles. Welcome back. This is The Herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. Joy Taylor is joining us. We had breaking news right before our show a couple hours ago when it started, Des Bryant to the New Orleans Saints.
Starting point is 01:22:10 And I think we both feel like it's something. It's not everything, but he can play still. He should have been in the league. But I think everybody's a little hesitant with a high-maintenance player, especially when you have, you know, the young bad teams don't want Des. Because everybody's just trying to win games and he would do disruptive. And the good teams are worried about a guy like Des because they don't want to upset all their mojo. But New England brought in Josh Gordon, and I watched him Sunday, and it's working.
Starting point is 01:22:37 And I think the Saints looked at that game with New England and Brady and Josh Gordon and thought, you know what, Des could be good enough to make plays. And I do think Des, it's not going to happen in a week. The Saints with the Bengals this Sunday. By the way, keep your eye on an upset there. I don't think he's going to make a big splash this Sunday, but I think Des Bryant will be a little like Josh Gordon, maybe not quite as good, but a powerful, strong receiver that gives them an occasional. player to down the stretch in the last six weeks.
Starting point is 01:23:06 And I got to tell you, the NFC is wide open. I mean, there are 11 teams still vying for six spots. And the New Orleans Saints don't have anything wrapped up. Carolina's on their tail in Atlanta just went out and got somebody. Somebody told you Atlanta went out and got somebody this morning. They went out and got Bruce Irvin from the Raiders. So they went out and got a pass rusher this morning. So all these teams, you know, most of the NFL outside of about five New York Giants
Starting point is 01:23:32 you know, Cleveland Brown messes, New York Jets, they're all in it. So I like to move. Saints Bengals this Sunday on Fox. By the way, Cowboys host the Saints Week 13 on Thursday night football. So that'll be fun. Des Bryant will be all dialed in. Maybe not this week, but it'll be dialed in for that game. Coming up in 15 minutes, T.J. Hushmanzada, his thoughts on Des Bryant to the New Orleans Saints.
Starting point is 01:23:57 Well, Troy Aikman, you know, the all-time cowboy great, when he talks, especially in Dallas, and he talks about the Cowboys and Jerry Jones, people listen. And after that sluggish performance and loss, I'm going to night football to the Titans, just Aikman came out, criticizing the Cowboys, and just listen to the word he uses here. You know, I talk to people. I talk to people who have been inside the building and have a pretty good understanding of how things are run. And in a lot of ways, there's a lot of dysfunction. and that has to change if this team is going to be able to compete on a consistent basis each and every year. So let's talk about the word dysfunction.
Starting point is 01:24:44 It's a talk in Dallas yesterday. I was a talk around the country yesterday. Troyickman doesn't talk like that about the Cowboys much. Dysfunction. Is he right about that? Yes. We have seen over the last 100 years in this country, wealthy families, the DuPonts, the Kennedys, the Rockefellers, the Hearst family, the Trump's. wealth creates power and leverage and it creates celebrities and stars and entitlement and
Starting point is 01:25:11 it creates some dysfunction i told joy this yesterday the lakers rial madrid manchester united new york giants new york yankees uh FIFA the soccer organization iOC the olympic committee um Dallas cowboys new york knicks when you are that big and there's so much money involved you start making decisions for money. A couple years ago, the Lakers signed Kobe Bryant to a massive contract. Why? Because their broadcasting partner, Time Warner, said, we're not signing a deal unless you sign Kobe. And so the Lakers made a move for Time Warner. Now, I'm ready for the team to appease a broadcaster for the record years ago. The Yes Network had the Yankees games. And they said to sign A-Rod, big contract.
Starting point is 01:26:03 Well, it's a lot of money. I mean, you want, you want to deal with us? You want your games on Yes Network? Make sure you sign A-Rod. So when you're a rich family, the DuPonts, when you're a rich organization, Real Madrid, you know, these, these Manchester United, Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, there is so much money and so much wealth. The decisions are often made, not just about wins and losses. So I think Troy Aikman's comment on dysfunction is accurate, it's fair, there's some of it. And I would say you see more of it than you do less at the very top.
Starting point is 01:26:37 The second word Troy Aikman used, let's overhaul. That's another big word. Let's go with that. This team organization, you just can't simply replace head coaches and say, now it's going to be better. No, it's been shown that it's not better. That's where I disagree. The Chicago Bears made one move.
Starting point is 01:27:11 Tribusky played for John Fox. Tribusky now with Matt Nagy. One move. it changed everything. 13 points more a game. Sean McVeigh replaces Jeff Fisher. Now they did get a left tackle
Starting point is 01:27:24 and they grabbed Robert Woods a wide receiver, but they made one huge move. Jeff Fisher defensive guy, Sean McVeigh offensive guy. By the way, the Philadelphia Eagles and on that ship Kelly, they brought in Doug Peterson
Starting point is 01:27:39 and it kind of changed everything. This is a quarterback coach league. Don't kid yourself. Coaches matter. Never forget the four teams in college football that are one, two, and three, and four. Nick Sabin, Davosweeney, Brian Kelly, and Jim Harbaugh, all four of those programs before those coaches got there. Those huge brands were a mess. Bama was a mess. Clemson was a mess. Michigan was a mess. And Notre Dame was a mess. I don't believe the Cowboys need an overhaul. I think they need a new coach. And I think they probably have to draft another quarterback. But let me tell you why I don't think it's an overhaul. They have capital. space. They have an excellent, athletic, aggressive, talented front seven. Very few in the league better than them. It's a passing league. They now have a number one receiver. You need a star running back too. That helps. They got one of those. They also have an elite left tackle. And their offensive lines not as good as it was years ago, it's still top eight, stop 10.
Starting point is 01:28:39 I agree with a dysfunction, which I think is unavoidable in wealthy families and in mega brands. I just think it's unavoidable. That much money creates dysfunction. But I don't think the Cowboys need an overhaul. I think what the Cowboys need is a fresh leader at the top. And I do think you got one more year at DAC the rest of this year and next year, you should draft another quarterback. Disfunction, yes. Overhaul. I disagree. You know, I will say one of the things I really like about the NFL, and it drives me nuts about baseball. His baseball just struggles to adapt and evolve and make change. I got to tell you, this Josh Gordon to the Patriots, Golden Tate to the Eagles,
Starting point is 01:29:30 Des Bryant to the Saints, as a consumer, as a fan, it just makes it more fun. Like, you know, we talk about sports all the time. LeBron to the Lakers, Jim Harbaugh, to Michigan, A-Rod, to the Yankees, Chris Paul to the Rockets. I like fun. Big star to big brand. Yeah. I mean, like the Dez Bryant moved to the Saints. So, you know, I don't, I think his impact on the games will be fairly granular. It will be fairly small. But man, this is not college football.
Starting point is 01:29:59 These NFL games, think about this. The worst team in the NFL is Buffalo. Minnesota's top 10. Buffalo with a rookie quarterback went to Minnesota and blew them out. Had a 27-0 lead. And so, you know, in pro. No sports. You're never going to have a locker room, especially when you have like 55 guys in the NFL where you like everybody or everybody likes everybody. New England does about as good a job as possible that they're all unified, headed in the same direction. So, you know, with Des Bryant, he's no better today than three months ago. New Orleans is in a dog fight in their own division.
Starting point is 01:30:34 Carolina is not going away. Atlanta looked great last weekend. What New Orleans is saying is, can he make a play? I mean, can he make a play? It is remarkable. We've seen games this year. They've all come down to a play. All of them.
Starting point is 01:30:48 You mean, one play, New England and the Packers on Sunday, Green Bay Fumble. That was hard for Green Bay to overcome, that fumble. Only had one big mistake, the fumble, but it felt like it changed the game. And I watched, you know, New England, Kansas City earlier this year. So, you know, Des Bryant to me, even if he, slightly disruptive, can he make a play? And I think he can. I don't think he'll make it this weekend,
Starting point is 01:31:15 but I think he can. Buy Seller Hold, we have a great last 45 minutes. T.J. Hushman's all coming up next. And my thoughts on the Lakers who play tonight and a number that may surprise you in their favor. That's coming up. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Don't be that guy in the room with the long, sloppy look at Untuck shirt. Go to Untucket. Com code heard 20% off on tucka dot com code heard i wear them all the time by the way lakers uh host uh minnesota tonight jimmy butler's gonna play and lakers are four and six but they're
Starting point is 01:31:50 interesting they're fun to watch they're third in the NBA and field goal percentage they're third in um uh scoring and uh lebron's like 28 8 and eight he's fine everybody's freaking out though because he hasn't had a dominant game his numbers aren't quite as good and Doug gotleeb came on the other show our show the other day and said this just give me one game where you feel like, oh yeah, LeBron's the best player in the league. I haven't seen it. The energy's not there defensively. Just take over. Be selfish.
Starting point is 01:32:18 Show us why you're LeBron James. There's something there that's missing from LeBron, and I can't explain it. I wish you could. Well, I will try. LeBron is doing what parents do. He's allowing the Laker kids to figure some of their problems out. This is what you do as a parent. LeBron's got stacks of money in titles.
Starting point is 01:32:38 He moves to a team with a bunch of kids. and he's letting them make mistakes and figure some stuff out on their own. What value is that if LeBron drops 48 tonight, plays every minute, and they win or lose by a bucket? In the end, you've got to figure out of Kuzma and Lanzo and Josh Hart and Brandon Ingram can play. This is why LeBron figured it out years ago. I'm going to take some nights off. This is all about May and June.
Starting point is 01:33:06 Everybody loves Westbrook. Oh, my God, he plays hard every night. doing? Do you know how many three-pointers Westbrook has hit in the fourth quarter this year? Zero. He's a shot fighter by the fourth quarter. Do you know what his free throw percentage is in the fourth quarter? 58%
Starting point is 01:33:21 Westbrook's a shot fighter. But he plays hard. He shouldn't pace yourself. There's 82 games. This is why every year Westbrook gets to the first round of the playoffs, and he's absolutely exhausted. Remember this? Westbrook. Got the screen, the switch
Starting point is 01:33:38 on D. It's a three-over. How you? and it's no good. He is one of nine, and he's shooting in the fourth. Again, he's got it. Again, he'll challenge. This time a two. Another miss.
Starting point is 01:33:49 He's tired. He's got nothing in the tank. Nothing. Nothing. He's played 40 excruciating, heavily leaned on minutes. He's got nothing in the tank. It's the first round. He hasn't hit a three-pointer this year in the fourth quarter, Westbrook.
Starting point is 01:34:06 His free throw percentage is 58%. congrats on crushing Denver on a Tuesday and scoring 48 and getting 10 boards. But LeBron's babysitting right now. He's got to figure out if the kids can play. And it's just let's sit here. Let's watch them. Let's monitor. Let's elevate.
Starting point is 01:34:25 You know, it's this idea that about 10 years ago, all you fans started saying, you didn't care what LeBron did 6 for 6, M.J. 6 for 6. And when you did that with LeBron, you told him, nothing matters except the finals. So LeBron paces himself and tries to get to the finals. And here's the thing about LeBron. You may not like him, but, dude, it is June, and LeBron looks like it's November. He's got nothing but energy, and Westbrook is shot. So I do get what LeBron's doing, and I think it's the right move.
Starting point is 01:34:56 And with that, I bring in the former Pro Bowl wide receiver, one of my friends, one of my favorite guys I bring on this show, a real insider, T.J. Hushman Zata. By the way, I don't know if I could spell your name without looking at it. It's amazing. That's an amazing name. Guys call you Hush? Yeah, Hush. Hush or T.J.
Starting point is 01:35:19 Yeah. That's amazing. 11 NFL seasons. Hush. So, Des Bryant to the Saints, like it or not? I love it, actually. Love it? Yeah, I really, I was going, just thinking about it when I saw on TV today that the Saints signed him.
Starting point is 01:35:35 and I. The last year he had a competent quarterback that was really a thrower was 2014. He played extremely well. Dak Prescott is a good quarterback, but he's not a receiver-friendly quarterback, so to speak. He's going with the most
Starting point is 01:35:53 accurate pastor in NFL. If they give him the targets, everybody's going to say, oh my God, why didn't Des get signed sooner? He's going to play extremely well if he gets an opportunity and he gets those targets. How long, think he's in shape. Oh, guarantee he's in shape. If you want to play, he should have been working out five days a week, Monday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. And just grinding it.
Starting point is 01:36:16 Just grinding it and hope it pays off. And if it does it, okay, it is what it is. Is the Drew Breeze Sean Payton's system highly complex that you need six to eight weeks? I don't, this is just me personally. I don't believe any system is that complex. Football is universal. They can run a drive concept. They might not call it drive. They'll call it drive. They'll it something else until you understand the plays you just when they call it plays oh when we when i was with the cowboys this is what we called it and you memorize it that way that's how you remember certain things until you get a grasp of football is universal it's not that hard so you think he comes in and makes an impact in two weeks michael thomas has 70 catches yes i
Starting point is 01:36:55 harvind kamar's are second leading receiver i know i know and so if des is anything like i think he is I think he's going to light it up. He's playing with Drew Breeze. You give a little bit of separation to balls on the money. Balls on the money. Because you get to the playoffs, they're not going to let Michael Thomas do what the rounds did on Sunday. That's a good point.
Starting point is 01:37:16 They're not going to allow that. And when Kamara comes into the game, they normally run him on toss plays outside or give him options to go in and out in the passing game. They're going to stop that. Teams are going to shut that down and force you to go to Benjamin Watson or force you to go to the other receiver to Ricky Smith.
Starting point is 01:37:32 that's going to be Des Bryant now. He can get open and win. Yesterday, Troy Aikman said, dysfunctional and overhaul for the Cowboys. Disfunctional, maybe. Overhaul, I don't buy it. Do you? You know what I was thinking?
Starting point is 01:37:45 It's like Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, and they're going to fire themselves? We suck. We don't know what we're doing. We're going to get rid of ourselves and hire somebody else. Troy Akeman, hire Troy Akeman. They need overhaul.
Starting point is 01:37:55 They're dysfunctional. Here you go, Troy, take over. You know, lead us to where we need to go. If it's that bad, if they are going to fire them. Would you fire yourself? I don't think they're going to make a ton of moves. I don't think they're that far off. I think they're a coach. If you put McVeigh in that offense, tomorrow I'd be like, it's a better football team. You just need creativity. They don't have any. They need creativity.
Starting point is 01:38:17 They're playing Dak Prescott like he's Tony Romo. He's not. Tony Romo was a great passing quarterback. Tony Romo was extremely smart. And I'm not saying that Dak Prescott isn't smart. I don't know him. But I know he doesn't throw the ball like Tony Romo. And you have. to cater your offense to what you have. Run somewhat of a Philadelphia-style offense for Dak Prescott, and they're not doing that. Go back to the game. They had the ball.
Starting point is 01:38:43 It was third and 10. They went Trips right. And normally, everybody knows in football, trips right, the back side receivers are X. Trips right, mean three receivers go to the right. A single-side receiver to the left. Gallup was a receiver to the left. They got man-to-man.
Starting point is 01:38:57 Why wouldn't that be Amari Cooper to the left? They played on Pressman. They threw Gallup a go route. He didn't catch it. It was good coverage. If I just give up what I gave up to get Amari Cooper, he's a single side receiver because they're going to man you up on third down. And fourth down, they came back with the same formation.
Starting point is 01:39:12 They played coverage. I'm putting Amari Cooper as an ex-receiver single side to see if he can win. So you think it's more Garrett than Dak? I don't know who, well, Lennon Hennon is offensive coordinator. It's Lennon or Garrett. It's one of them. They're not creative. They're not.
Starting point is 01:39:28 There's certain times in games where the system, like Sean, Peyton like McVey get you open. The Dallas system, they're not getting guys open. They never do. Guys are forced to get open. Like we played in Cincinnati. We were forced to get open. We didn't have play calls that got us open. We had to get open. And that's what they're doing in Dallas and they don't have those type of receivers. You know, it's interesting. I want to run this video. Do we have the video of Belichick criticizing Aaron Rogers? So I mean, listen, Belichick before the game said Aaron's great, blah, blah, blah. And Aaron is great. And then during the game, I always want to know how airship with this. So here's Belichick talking about Aaron Rogers Sunday during the game NFL films.
Starting point is 01:40:07 Watch this. The pass rush is what we want. We just got to keep doing it. Hey, we got to keep doing it for 60 minutes. The pass rush is what we want, all right? Keep working the out of those guards. Keep in a pocket. He's trying to throw us two interceptions now. We're going to get one. All right, he's just lobbing it up there. That's a great job. Keep pressing up. If he runs backwards, all right, then run them out of bounds. That's great. When you were a player, if somebody would have bad mouthed you, how does it land? To me, it's the heat of the moment, really. He's just getting his guys fired up, coached them up more so than anything else.
Starting point is 01:40:43 I don't put anything into it. That's what a coach should do. What are you going to say? Oh, man, this guy is great. Let's just do our best to keep him in the pocket. He's supposed to say that. Did your head coach come? Because Belichick wants twice a game.
Starting point is 01:40:57 We'll go to the back of the bus and start. Did your guys do that? Your coaches? No, I couldn't recall my position coach, not the head coach. I can't recall ever. In all the games I've played, a head coach comeback, no, ever. Bill does it about twice a game. It's pretty effective.
Starting point is 01:41:15 I mean, you watch that. It's funny because when you say Bill, everybody just assumes you're talking Belichick, and that's how good he is because when you say Bill, that's the first thing you think of is Belichick. Yeah. So it's funny about, I was talking about this the other day, like I'm older, right? But as you get older and young people come into any business, media, law, dentistry, it doesn't matter what it is. It doesn't matter what it is.
Starting point is 01:41:38 Football, you don't want to look old. I may be getting old. I don't want to look old. So I want to make sure I'm in shape. I want to make sure, you know, the contact lenses work so I don't have old glasses and look like Harry Carey. So the point is Sean McVeigh is in the league now. And Sean's young, he's ripped, he's fit. He looks young.
Starting point is 01:41:55 Kyle Shanahan, good shape, young. You know, the young guys. And I'm watching these guys, and I'm watching Mike McCarthy this weekend. Now, Belichick wins all his game so he can look what he wants to look like. But I remember watching Mike Ditka and he was a legend. And then about an hour later, I looked at him and I thought, he looks old and he sounds old and he hasn't adapted. And I'm watching Mike McCarthy the other night.
Starting point is 01:42:20 And with all these young coaches, I mean, listen, man, it matters in politics. It matters in everything. appearance, vibrancy, dynamic. I look at McCarthy and I look at Aaron and McCarthy just looks like an old ticked-off Chicago cop that's tired. He wants to go golf. And it's funny because McVeigh has come into this league now. And his energy and he's cut and he's talking and he's ripping.
Starting point is 01:42:47 And Pete Carroll's older, but he's got good energy. And Andy Reid's 60, but he's funny and he's clever and he adapts. and, you know, Sean Peyton's 54, but he looks 44. With McCarthy, I watched that game Sunday, TJ. How old is he? He's like 55, 56, 57. I got to be honest with you. He looks tired.
Starting point is 01:43:09 He looks tired of Aaron. He looks tired of the situation. He's not great. He looks crusty. He looks frosty. It's funny about it. Am I crazy? The players see that.
Starting point is 01:43:21 Man, you won't be getting the Christmas card from Mike McCarthy. That's for sure. You don't think players think about that stuff. See, this is what happens is depending on the longevity of the players on the Green Bay Packers roster, the stuff, it gets stale because you've heard every analogy. You've heard all the we got to play better. And then you actually, when you know the offense inside out, when you get the game plan, this happens to us,
Starting point is 01:43:50 you actually, you just go through the game plan and look for new plays and get excited about a new play for that week. Oh, we got a new, man, we got new plays this week. Why? You just get tired of doing the same thing. Okay, so Sean McVeigh's got new plays every week. Kyle Shanahan has new plays every week. A lot of coaches add new plays.
Starting point is 01:44:08 I'm not saying that's the case in Green Bay, but it's almost, you just watch them as good as Aaron Rogers is throwing the ball. Yeah, it's almost like, it's like that loaf of bread when you want a sandwich and you go look like, oh, golly, it's a week old. It's a week old. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:44:25 You feel the bagel. You're like, it's two days old. I can't eat the bagel. Exactly. And I'm not banging on them, but there's a reason presidents have consultants on what they wear. That's what I know somebody, a guy, I don't know if he's still alive. Sid Rogic was Reagan's like consultant, the ties he wore, the shirts he wore. They want to know everything's, okay, they do that for a reason.
Starting point is 01:44:48 In elections, the appearance, you want to be youthful. When I watch McCarthy in Green Bay, he just seems. guess what? He doesn't seem new. He doesn't seem slick. He doesn't seem dynamic. He's going to change now. Here he is he's going to subtly change.
Starting point is 01:45:02 He's going to start making some change because he's looking in the mirror. He's like, oh. By the way, Matt might be right. Matt Patricia had on backwards first week, Joy. And I said, you look like a. I said you look like a frat boy. It's a billion dollar organization. Can't wear your hat on backwards as a head coach.
Starting point is 01:45:20 You know what it is? These owners, these general managers, they listen to you. They watch you and they, Colin has a point here. They watch this show and they listen to what you say and you have a point with a lot of things, a lot of points that you make. And they start to say, hey, Matt, turn that around. Colin's right. Turn it out around. I did take credit for that.
Starting point is 01:45:37 You did take credit for that. I had two NFL executives go, you are absolutely right. And I'm watching McCarthy on the sideline. He needs a consultant. It's like this. And he goes to a press conference. And he's just grumpy. And it's like, then I see McVeigh, 100 miles an hour, Pete's chewing his gum.
Starting point is 01:45:57 And he reads in the sideline. Got vibrancy. And Peyton Manning's over there and fighting, yelling at reps and yelling at players. And I think it matters. McVeigh is a new wave of coaches, though. The young, energetic guys that can relate to the players, I've heard from people on that team that anytime anything goes wrong, it doesn't matter whose fault it is, McVeigh will get in front of the team and say, that's my fault.
Starting point is 01:46:21 Doesn't matter whose fault it is, it's my fault. And as players, you really appreciate it because you know it's not his fault, but he's going to take the blame because he's a head man in charge. T.J. Hushman's all the good stuff. Car shopping's confusing. New car used car. Go to TrueCar.com. Check out True Price.
Starting point is 01:46:36 Save three grand off MSRP. Join with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. That's some bad news for you, Colin. What? Your guy.
Starting point is 01:46:47 What? Sam Darnold spent a day watching Jets practice from the sideline with a walker. walking boot on his right foot. And now he'll miss some game time, too. As the Jets just announced, he's out for Sunday's game against the bills. And could miss their week 12 game against the Patriots after their buy as well. Apparently, Donald's foot has a significant spring. That's going to be an ugly game.
Starting point is 01:47:08 Well, first of all, Josh Rosen got hurt. Darnal's now hurt. Baker's been under assault for about three weeks. I don't know what happened to the Browns-O line. Josh Allen got hurt. There's this, we have, there is something going on here with all these rookie quarterbacks. Oh, you mean all those teams that have high- I picks in the NFL don't have a complete team.
Starting point is 01:47:25 Yes. And by the way, they all have bad old lines. Cleveland, I thought out a good old line. That's not any good either. And Baker, the last three weeks, has been getting from that Chargers game on. Baker's been under absolute assault. Yeah, Darnel was sacked four times and hit seven times by the Dolphins last week. So Wednesday was the first time that he's ever missed a practice. But that's not good news for the Jets. So, as we were just discussing, the Saints have reached an agreement with Des Bryant for a one-year contract,
Starting point is 01:47:49 which he will sign on Thursday, although they've won seven-stststststststst. straight games and ranked second in the NFL with 34.9 points a game. They are actually thin at receiver. Tedgin Jr. was placed on IR with a knee injury last month and Cameron Meredith has not panned out so far, zero targets over the past three games. And outside of Michael Thomas, their next leading reception, or the next reception leader is Alvin Kamara. Then they have Ben Watson and Treyquan Smith. Dez in 16 games in 2017, had 69 catches for 138. yards and six touchdowns.
Starting point is 01:48:24 So I like this move for the Saints. I think everyone felt like Desh should be on a team. It just was kind of waiting for the right fit. This is a well-run team with a stud quarterback. If he makes waves, he's gone. I also think Des kind of knows by sitting out the books out on him. Yeah, I don't think, I don't foresee that at all. I don't see that being the situation.
Starting point is 01:48:48 He hasn't been on a team all year. He's seeing what's happened with. with offenses, he's actually quite valuable the way that the offensive explosion that's happened in the NFL. If he can make any impact whatsoever, he's going to be in a good position going into next year for any team. So it's like you said, it's a game of inches. If he can make one big play, it's worth it.
Starting point is 01:49:09 I don't know what they signed. I don't have the details of the contract yet, but I'm sure the Saints are put themselves in a position where it's not a disaster if it doesn't work out. But it's a good move, and everyone's going to be very excited for that matchup later in November against the Cowboys. And speaking of the Cowboys, Sean Lee cannot stay healthy. According to the Dallas Morning News,
Starting point is 01:49:30 God Lord. Sean Lee will miss four to six weeks after he injured his hamstring Monday night. Hamstring issue that also kept him out of three games earlier this season. It's over. It's over. I mean, he's dealt with injuries his entire career. He hasn't played a 16-game slate in his career, despite being in the league since 2010.
Starting point is 01:49:48 This is why they took a linebacker out of a small, university eight-man football guy. This is why. I like Sean Lee, but this is why, and I actually like Jalen Smith, too. I like their linebackers. I think the linebackers are second, third,
Starting point is 01:50:02 best unit and team. They have Jalen Smith, Layton, Van derrash, and Damien Wilson. They'll all probably see time. Yeah. Now, I mean, he is the leader of the defense, but, I mean, he just, he can't say healthy.
Starting point is 01:50:13 And he has a cap hit of over 10 million going into next year, so 30 years old. It's done. we'll see what happens there. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News.
Starting point is 01:50:28 It's a bummer. I like him. He's a good player, but you've got to stay healthy. He's the leader of their defense, but it always seems to be a hamstring situation with him. And, I mean, you're not there. You have to be there. You have to be available. All right. I'm your stockbroker.
Starting point is 01:50:43 You have questions. I'll tell you to buy your stock, sell your stock, or hold your stock. It's buy-sell hold. Time to buy-sale. Colin will decide if he'll buy-buy-it. Sell. Roger to tell. Or hold.
Starting point is 01:51:03 Speaking of the Cowboys, buy-sell or hold, the Cowboys will finish below 500 for the first time in Dax's career. Well, there are two games under 500 now at 3-and-5, and let's look at their schedule. At Philadelphia, at Atlanta, Washington, New Orleans, Philadelphia, at Indiana. What do they all have in common? Their next six games are against teams.
Starting point is 01:51:23 battling for playoff position. John, it's a rough road. Cowboys will be under 500 for the first time in Dax's career. By Seller Hold, Aaron Rogers and Kirk Cousins will miss the playoffs. Well, the Vikings are currently the second wildcard team, also a half game behind Chicago for the division. Kirk Cousins is actually having a good year, and we know this team offensively with those wide receivers,
Starting point is 01:51:50 scores and can push the ball down the field. We don't doubt that. But I think people are overlooking the Vikings defense, which after a rocky first three weeks, a lot of it because they had a tough schedule, they're now first in the NFL in sacks, first in third down defense, and first in red zone touchdown percentage allowed.
Starting point is 01:52:11 Excuse me, third in that. So John... Sell, sell, sell! Now, the Vikings are going to make the playoffs. They can go over the top, they can run the ball. And this defense, after a rocky set up, September is really, really buttoning things up. Buy seller hold. Drew Breeze is the best quarterback in the NFC.
Starting point is 01:52:29 Well, I don't even know what the argument is. He's short. Is that we're holding against him now? Completion percentage is 76%. Not only is it first. Is that good? It's absurd. I couldn't do that playing catch with Goulet from here. Number one in touchdowns.
Starting point is 01:52:50 Number one in fewest picks. Passer ratings number one. And I think he's got better leadership qualities than you know who in Wisconsin, John. Buy, bye, bye! Yes, Drew Brees right now is the best quarterback in the NFC. Why are we still arguing it? I have great hands. We can totally get to 80%.
Starting point is 01:53:06 All right, buy so hold. The Raiders will make the playoffs again before the Cowboys. Listen, I think we're over-dramatizing a little Dallas's plight. Excellent Front 7. Star Running Back, elite left tackle. Let's slow down on this. The Raiders have one playoff appearance in 15 years. The Cowboys have six.
Starting point is 01:53:29 Okay. The Raiders are man overboard. And the Raiders don't even have a home game next year. They don't even have a home next year. So John, sell, sell, sell. The Cowboys will get back to the playoffs before the Raiders. Buy seller hold, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, or James Harden will miss the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:53:52 LeBron hasn't missed the playoffs since his second year in the NBA. Westbrooks made it eight of nine years, and James Harden has never missed the playoffs. Listen, this game, this league is more offensive than ever, and some of these good teams are losing shootouts. Slow down, take a deep breath. Remember, the Lakers have beaten the bad teams, lost to the one great team Toronto,
Starting point is 01:54:16 and have been in five go-either-way games. John, Sell, sell, sell! LeBron, Russell, and James will all make the playoffs. Last one, buy sell-hold. Jim Harbaugh will make the college football playoff for the first time. Well, Alabama's not going to lose. Clemson's not going to lose in the weaker ACC, and I don't think Notre Dame's going to lose.
Starting point is 01:54:40 So it's going to come down to that four spot. I would not have made this bet three weeks ago because I didn't know, I thought they'd beat Michigan State and Penn State, but I didn't know what they'd look like. But they dominated Michigan State. They annihilated Wisconsin. They completely humiliated Penn State. And right now, Ohio State's defense is a mess.
Starting point is 01:55:01 I mean, Ohio State my entire life could run the football and play defense. They can't do either. Michigan is significantly better than everybody in the Big Ten. John. Bye, bye, bye, bye. Yep, they're going to mess. make it. I also think Georgia will have a second loss and wouldn't be shocked if Oklahoma with an atrocious defense also gets upset in that arena league called the Big 12.
Starting point is 01:55:29 Coming up next, the biggest story of the NFL week 10 will definitely be taking place off the field. That is next in best for last. Sunday, it's a great slate of NFL action highlighted by Drew Brees and the 7-1 Saints, taking on Andy Dalton and the Bengals or Phil. Rivers and the Chargers battle the Raiders. It's all on Fox and the Fox Sports app. Check the local listings for the game in your area. By the way, I think we're going way too crazy on this whole Alabama
Starting point is 01:55:56 could beat an NFL team. They haven't faced any quarterbacks. They're out of conference schedule. They faced Louisville, who's terrible on a neutral field. They faced Arkansas State, Louisiana, Lafayette, and I think they faced Citadel later. They beat Ed Orger on this weekend. Who gives a rip? I mean, USC wouldn't even give him a job interview. I mean, this idea they can beat an NFL team, they wouldn't be the good Canadian football league team.
Starting point is 01:56:17 If they play Clemson, the line's going to be three. We literally do this every year. They played Georgia last year with Tua, and it was a dog fight. They won the national championship and the final play of the game. This idea that Georgia and Alabama, they're recruiting the same kids. And by the way, Kirby Spartan knows Alabama's offense, and Davos Sweeney's already beaten him once and could have beaten him twice. This idea that Alabama, you can't beat him as a bunch of hooey them,
Starting point is 01:56:41 played anybody. LSU. When Ed Orgeron, tell me the last great quarterback, they haven't faced a decent college quarterback. Look at it this way. Do you think that they could beat the Browns? God, no. They'd get stomped like a narcot of bikers route. Well, the Raiders beat the Browns.
Starting point is 01:57:02 Come on. Do you think you could beat the Jets? The Browns beat the Jets. College team can never, ever beat the absolute worst NFL team ever. Thank you. Because a college team may, may have, say, let's be generous, 10 NFL players on it. In the last decade, how many Alabama players have come into the NFL and been stars? Four, six?
Starting point is 01:57:24 Let's just say there's 10 NFL players on this Alabama team. Three will be great in the NFL. How many NFL players are on the Raiders team? All of them. Not hard. By the way, I got to read this. You want to understand your DNA and to know your family story? go to 23 and Me Ancestry Service Kit.
Starting point is 01:57:41 49 bucks when you buy two. 23andMe.com slash The Herd. All right, best for last. After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, Cowherd. It's the best for last. Joey and I are literally the only people in America
Starting point is 01:57:57 that make sense anymore. Alabama's going to beat the Raiders. What is it? I could not agree with that statement. The Raiders already beat another NFL team. It doesn't make any sense. And by the way, they beat Cleans. Cleveland, Cleveland beat Baltimore.
Starting point is 01:58:11 So could the Bay Alabama win the AFC North? This Alabama team isn't even the best college football team of all time. The Miami Hurricanes had a team with like 28 NFL guys. And they wouldn't have lost. Yeah, and nine of those guys would into the NFL and were studs. By the way, Thursday we have a great game on our network. It's incredible. It is the Steelers hosting Carolina.
Starting point is 01:58:30 The game sells itself. Fox wanted us to run a couple of promos to ramp the game up. And I, this is just my opinion. I think the game sells itself. And I don't think it needs a lot of promotion. But here's the promoter promotion they handed us. Thursday, the Panthers had to Heinz Field to take on the first place Steelers. And Levion Bell heads to the end of his driveway to take out the recycling.
Starting point is 01:58:56 NFL action tomorrow night. I don't think you have to mention Levian Bell in the promo. I think the game is amazing. I think it's one of the five best games of the year. I mean, it's nice that he recycling. I guess. I don't think you need to mention Levian Bell in the promos.
Starting point is 01:59:11 They've got another one. Thursday, the Carolina Panthers had to Pittsburgh to face one of the hottest teens in football, while Levion Bell faces the hottest pocket in his microwave. NFL action tomorrow night. Yeah, I just think they're pushing it. I don't think you have to mention him.
Starting point is 01:59:28 Like, that seemed egregious to me. We're trying too hard to make Lavian Bell part of the game. Hot pockets are tricky, though. They are good. You can't bite right into them. You burn your mouth. You've got to make sure it gets heated properly.
Starting point is 01:59:40 I just think Caroline at Pittsburgh is the, it's maybe this. I'm not sure if there's ever been a Thursday game this good. So there's a bunch of promos. I don't think we need promos for it. Thursday, the first place Pittsburgh Steelers look to continue their push to the playoffs. While Levi-on-Bell looks to invent time travel so he can beam himself back to September and stop himself from making such a regrettable career choice. NFL action tomorrow night.
Starting point is 02:00:08 Yeah, that's a cheap shot. That was over the top. I don't like us doing that stuff. I think it's too early to tell if it was a bad career choice. He may come back and they could win a Super Bowl. So anyway, the game... Yeah, he's not going to get $7.7 million back. I don't like the movie made.
Starting point is 02:00:24 I just wouldn't have made the move. I think, but the game, I would say, in the history of Thursday night football, do you ever remember a game this good? No, this is very good. Yeah. Oh, you're right. You're right. Rams Vikings.
Starting point is 02:00:37 What network was that on? This one. Apparently there's one more promo. Go ahead. Got one more? Oh, just the three? That's it? All right.
Starting point is 02:00:51 That was enough. Three was enough. That was fine. Nice job. You know, I got a, somebody was telling me, they said, they texted me and they said, man, you're just killing McCarthy. I'm not killing Mike McCarthy of Green Bay. What I am saying is we see this in politics all the time.
Starting point is 02:01:10 Telegenics, appearance, do you feel robust? Do you look robust? I said this a couple of, I said this a month ago, Joy. Sean McVeigh is going to get dudes fired. Sean McVeigh is going to get. Yeah, that's, I mean, that's a given. He is getting, and then Matt and Aggie may do the same thing. These young, vibrant dynamic coaches, and every time I watch Mike McCarthy and Rogers,
Starting point is 02:01:32 it makes me think of Ditka. Ditka was a rock star, and then an hour later, he felt old and outdated, and he wasn't slick enough, and it's like Mike McCarthy needs a wardrobe consultant. Maybe he's got to put it,
Starting point is 02:01:45 maybe he's got to slick his hair back. I don't know about the appearance thing. I was with you with Matt Patricia and the hat, although I am not a backwards hat mean something person. That's a bad look. It wasn't the best look, but they all wears, like, sweatpants and stuff on the sideline. I'm saying. Nobody's out there with a Vince Lombardi Fidora anymore.
Starting point is 02:02:05 I got just, it just did that McCarthy Rogers thing. It just doesn't look and feel dynamic. It doesn't feel right. It looks frosty. It looks like they don't like each other. I don't like the way it looks. I don't like what my eyes tell me. All right, we'll see you tomorrow. It's the herd. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.
