Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:00:16 breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:01:26 What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:48 I'm Joey Dardano, and on my new podcast, hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, and recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to me. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Listen to Help from a Hypocrite Wednesdays on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard Podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching heard.
Starting point is 00:02:34 You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. This is the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, loaded today. We're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me in Los Angeles. Crazy night. I'm not going to get into it. Joy Taylor and I are ready to go on a Wednesday where there's a dozen great new football
Starting point is 00:03:00 stories. How are you, Joy? I'm great. Hard knocks is awesome, huh? Yes. Yes, it is. Very revealing. Very revealing.
Starting point is 00:03:08 like, I want to start with this, Joy. You know when you play the power ball? And if you ever win the power ball, and if Joy wins the power ball, she will not be on this show the next day. She'll be with her in the Bahamas. And if I win, I will be here because I have no life. But the point is, when you win Powerball,
Starting point is 00:03:24 the way it works, regulated by states, you can either take a lump sum, right? Or you can take like 30 years of payments. Now, if you take a lump sum, they won't give you as much money. They'll give you like 70% of the money. Or you can take 100% of the money, but you get it over the course of 30 years. Now, most people, they say take the lump sum.
Starting point is 00:03:46 I don't think there's a better choice. I wouldn't want the stress of the lump sum. I'd rather have the guaranteed income, right? But you have to make a choice. Are you seeking security or massive immediate wealth? So Ezekiel Elliott, like a lot of running backs, is seeking security. But he also wants immediate wealth. Time out.
Starting point is 00:04:07 So Ezekiel Ellets holding out, they're not close. So free agency was created to make athletes rich. Go to the market and it's a bidding war. That's how it works for me and joy. Our contracts are up. We're free agents. We go out to the market. And if we've done a good job, people bid on us.
Starting point is 00:04:26 And the owner said, okay, let's do free agency. And the player said, yeah, we like free agency. But if you're going to break free agency two years early to seek security like the powerball, I'm not going to make you the highest faith and give you the security because you're running back. And we have Alfred Morris and we'll draft another one and our offensive lines great. And our quarterback's getting better. And we've got a bunch of good mouse to feed that are young and excellent players. Because once a player relinquishes free agency and that's what Zeke wants.
Starting point is 00:04:59 I don't want to go to free agency. Well, then I'm only bidding against myself. I'm Jerry Jones, I'm Stephen Jones. Free agency scares me, because now I've got to bet against my rivals. The Eagles may come and the Patriots and the Steelers. Free agency is not great for owners. But they have been willing in a collective bargaining agreement to allow free agency. They're like, okay, we own all the teams.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Free agency, you negotiate it. Okay, free agency is why LeBron James only signed one-year contracts so he could go back into the market so LeBron could control it. That's what Kevin Durant did, a one-year contract. I can control it. I want to get to free agency. That's what players are trying to do. But if you go to the league and you say, okay, I'll relinquish free agency, I want security to be paid now, well, then I'm only bidding against myself, and I'm not going to give you the most money. The lottery doesn't allow you to take the most money, and it's all guaranteed for security.
Starting point is 00:05:57 You've got to make a choice. And if Zeeke wants to break free agency, then you don't get the security you're seeking and the lump sum. Because I'm only bidding against myself. Stephen Jones said they are not currently close. I think you could easily get out of Oxnard and be back in Dallas before anything gets done. Matter of fact, I don't see any momentum that would lead me to believe that we're going to get anything done while we're out here.
Starting point is 00:06:26 I'll say it again. I would roll the dice. The Cowboys open up with three really rebuilding teams. One, you could argue Miami is tanking. Washington, they open up with New York Giants, they open up with Miami. I'd roll the dice. Dax getting better. A full offseason with Amari.
Starting point is 00:06:48 New innovative offensive coaches. The offensive line for the first time in a year is healthy. The schedule's easy. I'm the Cowboys. I roll the dice. Go 3 and 0 and get back some leverage if I've, in fact, lost any. But it's funny. You know, you go to certain social media devices, and everybody's like, pay, pay, pay, pay.
Starting point is 00:07:08 These are called contract negotiations. I've been in 12 in my career. I've been in 12 negotiations in my career locally, regionally nationally. Okay, there's times I've had leverage. There's times maybe my first contract at the other place. I didn't have a lot of leverage. But you never get everything. So if you're going to break free agency and give that to the owners within your
Starting point is 00:07:32 not getting to lump sum in security. So I think Dallas has, in my opinion, I buy what the Joneses are selling, which is we're pretty good here. We're better with you, but we're pretty good here. And we're going to kind of wait on this thing. And we're not resetting the market. All right. I want to shift to Antonio Brown and his feet.
Starting point is 00:07:57 They're gross. He can't practice. So Hard Knocks was on last night. it's very, very revealing. Hard knocks is. And I'll get to some of that later. I thought they needed more John Gruden, and I think the Raiders are paralyzed by their past,
Starting point is 00:08:12 which isn't nearly as good as the Steelers passed or the Packers passed, but they're paralyzed by it. But Antonio Brown had a very cute moment with his kids, his sons at camp, talking about his former team of Steelers in Big Ben. Huh? Where's the other birthday? He played with the Steelers?
Starting point is 00:08:34 Our quarterback Derrick from now. We're going to play with Rockerberger no more. We play with the Raiders. We play with a damn car. That's my quarterback. You know what's the name? Derek Carter? Derek Carr.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Now where's them, Daddy? He over there, number four. Yeah, they're practicing. Cutest kids in the world. But it's an interesting moment. I'm a big believer that Fit matters. when Kevin Durant chose Kyrie over Steph, it's not about the cities or the coaches,
Starting point is 00:09:08 I like Steph as a teammate better than Kyrie as a teammate. Fit matters. Big Ben and AB were a good fit. Big Ben is a deep ball thrower. The Steelers had a great O line, allowing Big Ben to sit in the pocket and the fast receiver to run. They also had a star receiver on the other side, limiting the double teams to Antonio Brown.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Do you know in the last, I don't know what is it, 15 years, Big Ben is second in the NFL in 25-plus yard TDs. And Antonio Brown's a home run hitter. I think they were a great fit. Edelman runs precise routes. Brady is a precision thrower. Great match. Great match. OBJ runs the best slant in the league.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Baker Mayfield is great on those quick slants. They'll be a great fit. Get them on your fantasy team. There are players that really fit other players. I mean, Patrick Mahomes, Cannon, Tyreek Hill, world's fastest football player. Drew Breeze, by the way, likes to throw short, intermediate middle of the field. Michael Thomas, they just signed him, why I like him, big receiver can go into the middle of field, catch the ball, and take the hits.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Fit matters. Derek Carr is not going to feel. fit Antonio Brown as well as Big Ben fit Antonio Brown. Now, I think Big Ben may miss Antonio Brown, but in this world we live in, quarterbacks dictate receivers, more than receivers dictate quarterbacks. I mean, not even OBJ could elevate Eli Manning out of his doldrums,
Starting point is 00:10:49 but yet we've had many instances where a very, very good quarterback took, I don't know, Wes Welker or Julian Edelman and made him national iconic figures. So, you know, when I look at A, B, in Oakland, I have a shaky offensive line. I have a quarterback that's more intermediate than deep ball. I don't have another star receiver on the field to take away heat. I think Antonio Brown reminds me a little of Kevin Durant. I think Kevin should have put his arms around Steph Curry and realize, man, that's a good superstar teammate. He works well with everybody.
Starting point is 00:11:26 and whoever's fault it was in Pittsburgh, I think Big Ben's going to miss A.B., but quarterbacks control receivers more than vice versa. I think A.B. is going to miss Big Ben. He won't admit it now. And his kids may be confused now, but I think it'll become very clear, very soon that A.B. left the perfect quarterback for his skill set.
Starting point is 00:11:50 The perfect offensive line, the perfect complimentary wide receiver, a coach that was progressive in Mike Tomlin and very player friendly. And by the way, an organization that lets their guys, they had, remember this about AB. The Steelers generally don't pay their receivers. They draft them well and let them go. They let Placks go. They let San Antonio Holmes go.
Starting point is 00:12:13 They let Mike Wallace go. They let Emmanuel Sanders go. They paid AB. So they loved him more than he thinks. they've let great receivers go. They paid AB. They liked AB. Now, Big Ben and he didn't get along. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But I'm watching that thing last night, and I can't get past. A.B. I think AB did a KD. I think you left a great teammate. Sometimes you just fit manners. You got to make it work. Not saying it's all your fault, KD. Not saying it's all your fault, AB.
Starting point is 00:12:48 You got to make it work. I think AB left A.B. perfect situation. Coming up next. You know, whenever a running quarterback comes into the league, I think there is justifiable concern. And I think Kyler Murray could be fantastic, but I'm really, really watching with a cynical eye on that.
Starting point is 00:13:15 He is very small. Mitch Trubesky, Lamar Jackson, I'm a little bit of a cynic here. I think pocket quarterbacks really are the current and the future to success. That's why I like Dwayne Haskins more than I like Mitch Trubesky who runs around. But I want to show you a play in a second from last year and why it should terrify certain fan bases that have quarterbacks that run. That's coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific

And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field, and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
Starting point is 00:15:04 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:15:19 Because that's two different. tensions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Starting point is 00:15:40 What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff, like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jordanano. You might know me as that last. guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody!
Starting point is 00:16:25 But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian, and recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope I'm a Hippocrat. I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Syke, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant,
Starting point is 00:16:49 and recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from a Hypocrite as part of the Mike Coutura Podcast Network available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:17:19 So, you know, I, as I've aged, I try to be very aware of new stuff. I update my phone every year. My wife and I are very aware of all the technology because we have young kids. And so I have a bunch of young people in my life. This staff, Joy is younger than me. My staff is younger than me. And Goulet's case also very irresponsible. But the point being, I like young around me and I like new stuff.
Starting point is 00:17:46 But not all new stuff is legit. A lot of new stuff is shiny and fun, but it won't prove the test of time. I'm old enough to remember the pet rock. That was a thing. It disappeared in about six months. A lot of new bands have a great song. Doesn't make them the Beatles. Doesn't make them Jay-Z.
Starting point is 00:18:06 There's a big difference between one-hit wonders and wonderful talents. So running quarterbacks now, everybody wants to running quarterback. Run, run, run, run, run, run. Three of the last four quarterbacks last year that were finished. the season where golf can't run, Brady can't run, Breeze can't run. And by the way, Mahomes can run, but he's really a pocket passer. He really, and Patrick Mahomes wants to throw the ball from the pocket. And if I had that arm, I would do. Okay. So running quarterbacks, Kyler Murray. Cam Newton is announced will not play in the preseason opener. For the record, I would never
Starting point is 00:18:39 have Cam Newton in the stadium. I would never have Brady, can't, any franchise quarterback. Andrew Locke, I don't want you near the stadium. So I would never play Cam in the preseason. too valuable, and he's my franchise quarterback. But just to show you about all these, I love my quarterback to run. Cam Newton is 6-6-255. I stood next to Cam Newton on a stage in New York seven, eight years ago. He is a massive athlete. He is not a big athlete.
Starting point is 00:19:04 He is a massive athlete. He is bigger than Khalil Mack. He is bigger than Aaron Donald. Aaron Donald's six foot. Cam Newton's six, six, and faster. Aaron Donald's stronger. The point being that Cam Newton got. got hit in week 10 by an athlete smaller than him.
Starting point is 00:19:24 And according to his story this morning, he's still hurt. Here's the hit on Cam Newton, week 10. We're going to see Carolina. They've got plenty of time. Newton gets hit. Ball is out. McCaffrey able to get back on top of it as T.J. Watt came in and laid the hit on Cam Newton.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Wow. Kyler Murray is 510204. Lamar Jackson 6.3-211. Cam Newton weighs 50 pounds more, is 5 pounds heavier, took a hit from a young linebacker just out of college who's smaller than him and is still hurt. You keep telling me about all this. I like mobility as in escapeability. Move away from hits.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I don't want running quarterbacks. I'm not into Trabisky. I'm not into Lamar. I'm not into Kyler. It's fun. But if Cam Newton from that one hit in week 10 is still hurt, you've never stood next to Cam Newton. He's bigger than Greg Olson is star tied in.
Starting point is 00:20:30 He's bigger than his left tackle. He's the biggest athlete, he and Big Ben, in my life at that position. So all I know is defensive players are getting faster. They're getting more athletic. every combine they bench press more, they jump higher, they're not slowing down. That tells me, Dwayne Haskins is the future, not Kyler Murray. Murray may be way more interesting, but Dwayne Haskins is a 6'5-232-pound man,
Starting point is 00:21:01 actually kid developing into a man. I'm going to go with that. I know nobody thinks Jared Goff and Brady and Brie. Russell Wilson's a small man. He runs around. The key is he never seems to get hit. You ever notice that with Russell Wilson? Andrew Luck is a huge man.
Starting point is 00:21:19 I've stood next to Andrew Luck. 6.4.5, 6.5, 260. Joy and I talked about this year today. He's just a big man. He's not healthy again coming into a season. I don't want to hear about running quarterbacks. I know it's new, cool, fun, shiny, wow. I'll take pocket guys.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Cam still hurt from that hit from a smaller guy. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So over the weekend, Jerry Jones praised Dak for his intangibles, having a lot of leadership in that winning over the locker room. And he even went on to compare him to Michael Irvin,
Starting point is 00:21:55 saying we couldn't have done it without his heart and soul and leadership. Well, USA Today asked Irvin about it. And he said, rarely do you get the heart and soul of a football team at the quarterback position? Dak has that in him. I tell people, stop it. Stop being a dummy here. It's insane sometimes when I hear the NAC. analysis on DAC and this man has won as many games as he's won.
Starting point is 00:22:15 It's like everyone's looking for a reason not to believe instead of opening their eyes for all the reasons they should believe. I actually fully agree. I think that the eye testing is being way overblown here with Dak Crescott. There's a report also out there that they may just let him leave after his contract is over. It's very hard to find a franchise quarterback. We've seen what happened when franchises gamble at that position and don't draft well
Starting point is 00:22:40 at that position and don't put it in place for the next. guy at that position. We're going to talk about the Giants next. Pretty good example of that. Doesn't feel like they're prepared for what's coming next or are preparing Daniel Jones to be a part of the next part of their franchise. Jack Prescott is the guy for the Cowboys. I don't know what more you can ask for. I understand that everybody wants Tom Brady. Everybody isn't the Patriots, and that's okay. What the Patriots do would never work in Dallas. You know, Joy, eye test is very funny in football because the eye test would tell you Jadavian Clowny was going to be the best defensive lineman for the Texans, but JJ Watt is.
Starting point is 00:23:17 The eye test would tell you that Khalil Mack going to Buffalo, not a football power, would not be the greatest player ever. You've got to be careful football eye test, because remember, there's a phone book you have to memorize. You're playing within a system. The eye test to me, Joy, works a lot in basketball, where you look at Zion and go, oh, holy hell, he doesn't look like anybody else. the eye test in football,
Starting point is 00:23:42 Aaron Donald, I've stood next to Aaron Donald. Joy, he's barely six feet tall. Russell Wilson doesn't pass the eye test. Aaron Donald doesn't pass the eye test. Baker Mayfield doesn't pass the eye test. It's very tricky in football. And it's very overblown.
Starting point is 00:23:57 None of us are NFL scouts, right? We see what we see. Obviously, he's going to constantly be compared to Carson Wentz, which is fair. But there's something to being available and being the leader of your team. talking about Carson Winston Philly, there was talks of the locker room being split over what they should do at quarterback in Philadelphia. It seems like Dak has the entire audience of the locker
Starting point is 00:24:20 room. I understand that there's a lot going on here, a lot of dynamics with Zeke and Amari and Dak and whether it makes sense to pay him or not, and whether he is that caliber of quarterback that should make that much money at this point, it is fine to debate, but the idea that he's not their franchise quarterback is just silly. I was told this years ago about from an, from an executive in the NFL, and I've mentioned it about once a year, so I'll mention it here. In high school and college, a football player that has pro potential can kind of bully his way to the pros. You're just physically stronger. But the difference in the NFL is it doesn't matter how big you are, like it is in high school and college. In the NFL, you're going to meet your
Starting point is 00:25:01 physical equal. So what separates guys in the NFL is do you have the ability to have a man, your physical equal, and you will burrow into his soul. You will make him wince. That's mental. That's not physical. And mentally, a lot of guys, Blaine Gabbard looked the part. He didn't like to get hit. Okay?
Starting point is 00:25:24 Dak Prescott, Andrew Luck, they like to get hit. They're big. They're strong. They're leaders. Football, you can bully your way to the pros. At that point, there's a lot of stuff. Teddy Bruske should never. have been that good. There's a physical
Starting point is 00:25:41 and emotional element to sports that you have to be very disciplined in. Like you said, everyone is, everyone is athletic. Everyone has the physical ability to be there. At the pro level, it's absurd. Yeah, at the pro level. So what is it that separates you there? So sticking with the NFC East, the New York football
Starting point is 00:25:56 giants, Pat Schumer is staying tight-lipped about his team's quarterback plan for the preseason opener against the Jets, but he did hint that Daniel Jones will see some playing time. Oh. Is the plan for Eli to Just get out of the way right here. Yeah, no, I think we'll let that all reveal itself.
Starting point is 00:26:14 How important is it for you to see Daniel play extended action here, though, in the preseason? Yeah, I mean, he's a guy that will play. I can tell you that for sure. Yeah, and it's good. You know, the preseason games are very important, especially for the quarterback to be able to go out there. It's the next real step in his, you know, in his process, so to speak. Pat Schumer's too nice. Pat Schumer should have said there, Joy,
Starting point is 00:26:41 it's the preseason. Of course he's going to play. Stop beating around the bush and being nice. It feels pretty obvious. You just say, if you asked Belichette that question, Belichette would go, do you think I'm going to play Brady for four quarters? That's a dumb, I mean, I'm not banging on the reporter, but Pat Schumer's trying to smile around it.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Don't be coy. Well, he's trying to smile around it because we all know what they're really asking. Like, is Daniel Jones the quarterback or not? And we're not going to find that out until week one. And it's going to likely be Eli, as we all know, unless Daniel Jones goes out there in the preseason and really lights it up, which I think we're all kind of hoping happens. Not that we're rooting against Eli, but it's like, it'd be fun. What did you do all this for? I like new quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Like, if somebody emerges, remember three years ago when DAC emerged? Yeah, exactly. It was a great story for all of us. Exactly. And look where we are now, talking about him. I'm getting paid $30 million a year. So finally, this was big news yesterday. The NCAA has added criteria for agents who wish to represent student athletes testing the waters for the NBA draft.
Starting point is 00:27:45 John Rothstein of CBS Sports tweeted the list, which is a bachelor's degree certified with the MBPA for a minimum of three years and take an in-person exam at the NCAA office in Indianapolis. Now, the bachelor's degree requirement has led some to refer to it as the Rich Paul rule, including LeBron, who tweeted hashtag the Rich Paul rule, and then a bunch of laughing emojis, can't stop, won't stop. They big, mad and scared. Nothing will stop this movement in culture over here. Sorry, not sorry. Now, this is kind of complicated because the NCAA changed the rule last year, where athletes
Starting point is 00:28:25 who, basketball players, specifically, obviously, who are going into the draft, who want to test the waters and see if they are draftable, won't lose their eligibility. Which I like, by the way. Great rule. Because kids should be able to come back and he's not ready. Couldn't it forever. And now you can. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Now, there is some truth to this because this really only applies to those athletes. A guy who is a one and done who we know is going to the NBA job. That's, by the way, that's a Rich Paul client. Right. Right, exactly. He's not really dabbling in the unknowns. Right. So this really doesn't actually apply to him specifically.
Starting point is 00:29:03 because this is for those guys that are just going to see if they are draftable, if they get any traction, and if they don't, they can go back and play another year in college. Yeah. I mean, you know, listen, I love LeBron and Rich Paul. I talk to Rich Paul. I like him both. Rich didn't say anything, by the way. He didn't respond smartly.
Starting point is 00:29:21 Well, of course, you shouldn't. There's a little victimhood here. Listen, if you care about the kids, Earl, if Earl gets into college basketball coaching, he's going to have relationships with kids. Yeah, of course. I don't think it's asking a ton for whoever represents 17-year-olds to have a college degree. You have to have a degree to coach.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Well, yeah, so this is where it's getting into with Rich Paul. Like, obviously, Rich Paul is qualified to represent any of these kids and would do a great job and will probably elevate their status immensely off the court as well. So having a college degree does seem a bit discriminatory in that sense. However, the point of it is, the idea of it is, I shouldn't say the point. The idea is what you. you said, that you don't want unqualified people representing a kid who may not be ready to enter the NBA draft and then come back to college and gives them bad advice or steals from them.
Starting point is 00:30:12 And we've seen this. Any number of things, right. Listen, in America, you need a license to fish. I think it's okay if I'm going to take your fiduciary future, I should be somewhat qualified. Now, the qualifications can be degree, exam. I was shocked, Joy, when I saw this story, that they had not had. these requirements before. Well, the thing about it is, though, if you are a one and done, like, say you're a Zion,
Starting point is 00:30:38 okay, you're not a guy that's going to check out if you're going to get drafted or not. You don't have to hire an agent until after you get drafted. That's right. Which is what a lot of guys do. So that rule doesn't even apply to that. So he could still hire Rich Paul right after he gets drafted, and the NCAA can do nothing about it because he's in the NBA now. And NCAA rules do not apply to the NBA.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Like Twitter. There's no way to enforce it. Twitter never has context or nuance. They just jump to a conclusion and whatever starts a forest fire there for. It's a bit more complicated. Yeah, this is a very complicated story. And Rich Paul, and I love Rich, and I think he's smart. I don't think it's the Rich Paul rule.
Starting point is 00:31:15 I think it goes way beyond that. Although the timing of it does make it appear, though, hey, we're, we don't want Rich Paul. I get it, and I get the optics of that. But it's more complicated than Twitter makes everything. It is much more complicated, yes. It's an avalanche with no context. And it's a reaction. a reaction to the FBI probe and all that, which is going on.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Which is another, exactly. That's another element to it. All right, Joy of the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. Well, it just seems like on this show I have to defend Tom Brady to all ends. Rob Parker's always hammering on him.
Starting point is 00:31:51 Nick Wright, you would think Nick is very smart. New England beat Brady beat his chiefs. Yet again, I look on my paper, and it looks like. like Tom Brady Salvos are coming. So my friend Nick Wright, via the Coward Global Satellite Network. All right, let me guess. Tom Brady's a bad guy with that new guy. I can't even get it out.
Starting point is 00:32:14 Go ahead. No. Where did Brady screw up? No. He didn't screw up at all. I am, you think I'm a Tom Brady hater. I'm not. I just foolishly thought he wasn't going to in the last three years
Starting point is 00:32:27 execute the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. age 39, then win the league MVP at age 40, then win another Super Bowl at age 41. I didn't think that was going to happen, so now I'm lumped in as a hater. But on this one, I am all on Tom Brady's side. New England manipulating Brady's loyalty, manipulating the fact that they know Brady wants to stay a patriot, and daring Tom Brady to go see what the market would be in a year, because a year from now he will not be under contract, and they can. can't franchise tag him, and that Jared Stidham and Brian Hoyer are behind him. That would be a
Starting point is 00:33:06 terrifying situation for any organization. But New England knows their quarterback who's always taking the discount, who's always done the right thing, probably won't hold their feet to the fire, so they're going to make him sing for his supper this year. On Brady's behalf, I'm outraged. I hope Brady calls their bluff. I hope Brady does go and see what the marketplace looks like. This is the greatest quarterback in NFL history, and they won't give him the dignity of a one-year actual contract extension. Brady's not pleased with it. He dropped the, it is what it is, and then he put his damn house for sale to let you know he's really not pleased with it. And I, and I, I honest to God, Belichick can do this to lawyer Malloy and Troy Brown and Thai law and Richard Seymour. You don't do
Starting point is 00:33:53 this to Tom Brady. And yet he's doing this to Tom Brady. Man, I hope in year 21, Tom Brady is going for Super Bowl 7 with some other team and Bill Belichick's trying to win his Super Bowl 7 with Teddy Bridgewater. I don't think that's going to happen, but that's only because of the grace and goodwill of Thomas Edward Brady. So New England, folks, I've got your guys back today, just not the mad scientist Belichick's back. That's one of your greatest takes of all time.
Starting point is 00:34:21 If I didn't have space to fill, I'd just say go home. Now, you cannot top what you just did. I am a big believer, Nick Wright, in that fit matters. And I think KD choosing Kyrie over Steph could be problematic. I think Big Ben was the perfect quarterback for AB, and it was the perfect organization. I watched Hard Knocks last night. I'm like, this is a circus.
Starting point is 00:34:44 This isn't good for AB's personality. Derek Carr's not Big Ben. Is it possible that AB made a big mistake? Is it possible? Oh, listen, sometimes divorce is better for both parties, and sometimes it's worse for both parties. both parties. I think this is the latter rather than the former. I think both Big Ben and Antonio Brown would have been far better served to work it out. Antonio will never play with the
Starting point is 00:35:13 quarterback as good as Big Ben again. Big Ben now will spend the final years of his career with Ju-Ju getting double-teamed, trying to turn one of the James Washington or the kid Deonté, who they drafted this year into someone. No, I don't think that Antonio's going to have another 1,800-yard season, not with Derek Carr throwing him 12-yard button hooks. And I don't think Big Ben's ever going to have a receiver as talented as Antonio Brown again. So, yeah, they both probably should have made it work. Now, I know it's in vogue to just blame Antonio Brown as opposed to recognizing Big Ben once upon a time did last year say it was Antonio Brown's bad route that caused a defensive
Starting point is 00:35:55 tackle to intercept a pass in the end zone. But we don't talk about that stuff. I think that's fair, by the way. I think that's a fair criticism of a big Ben. Listen, Cowboys have an early schedule that is pretty groove for 3 and O, rebuilding teams. Their offensive line now is healthy. They've produced three different thousand-yard rushers when healthy. I think Dak's getting better.
Starting point is 00:36:15 Amari a full season off working with Dak. I got to tell you, Nick, I'd roll the dice on this. If I'm Dallas, I'd roll the dice on this and be a little stubborn. What say you? everyone is making i shouldn't say everyone a lot of people have made that exact point to me that you just made you've got the giants so eli or daniel jones then dwayne haskins in washington and then in miami either fits magic or rosen that you can go three and oh without zeke i look at it totally differently i look at it as in a year dallas has legitimate super bowl aspirations
Starting point is 00:36:54 If in those first three games, you don't go 3 and O. If you go 2 and 1 or, God forbid, 1 and 2, your season is over. It's done. And so can you risk it? Can you roll the dice that on the easiest stretch of your season, you're not going to have your best player? People will say, well, in 93, they went 0 and 2 without Emmett. That team in 93 was stacked with Hall of Famers,
Starting point is 00:37:21 and after that 0.2 start, went 15 and 2, the rest. rest of the way. This team does not have that capability. So I get the logic behind it. I honestly would rather start without Zeke if I was in New England. Probably going to lose that game either way. Take him to the wall. Now it's a game against the Giants. Eli early in the year, his arm will be fresh, the weather will be fine. Sequin won't be running to the ground yet. Like, that's a loseable game without Ezekiel Elliott. That would make me nervous. Finally, I want to get a couple of minutes left, your perspective on the Rich Paul situation yesterday. I like Rich Paul a lot, and I like LeBron. I think they came across yesterday a little bit too much were victims of the NCAA's new
Starting point is 00:38:04 rule. I think it's very complicated. I think as Joy brought up, you've got a lot of different circumstances here with the FBI probe. They're trying to clean up their act on the agents. I don't think it's as easy as everybody's out to get Rich Paul, but I do think the optics and the timing were not grand. What do you make of the NCAA yesterday saying you need a bachelor's degree. You've got to have, you got to pass an exam. You know, the optics, Twitter, obviously, which often lacks nuance, it's against Rich Paul. I think there's some of that, not a ton of that. What did you make of it? Yeah, I heard you enjoy talking about it. And as much as I love you both, I vehemently disagree. Here's the deal. They say you have to be certified by the NBA
Starting point is 00:38:46 Player Association for three years. Fine. They say you then have to go to Indianapolis. in person to take their exam. Fine. If you do both of those things, why in the world would you also need a bachelor's degree? If I can pass your test without a bachelor's degree, then a bachelor's degree
Starting point is 00:39:05 must not be important. To be a quality agent, Rich Paul, the best agent in the NBA right now, the most powerful agent in the NBA right now, is proving you do not need a formalized bachelor's in the Germanic arts in order to
Starting point is 00:39:21 represent Anthony Davis. And this is not targeting Rich, because Rich now has enough people underneath him that plenty of those people have bachelor's degrees, and they could represent the client before they funnel him to Rich. It's to
Starting point is 00:39:37 prevent the next Rich Paul. It is not to protect the athlete. It is to protect the power structure that is already in existence. Disruptors, which Rich Paul and Clutch Sports are, are always met with resistance, denial, and then they try to change the rules on you before you finally
Starting point is 00:39:57 defeat them. That's what's happening here. Demanding that agents have a bachelor's degree to me is elitist, it is classist, and you could add another ist that you could make a strong case this is as well. So I think the nuance is that rich will be fine. They're trying to prevent the next Rich Paul, and it's not because they're worried about the 13-year-old in French lick who might become Larry Bird. It's because they're worried about protecting the power structure that is already in existence and the major agencies and older folks that benefit from it. That was very well said. That's very, I really like it. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:40:35 You and I should do a debate show someday. I appreciate that. Thank you. One day, man. That's that. Yeah, maybe. One day. That's the goal. Nick Wright, good talking to you. I do think an agricultural degree could be incredibly important to... He's right. The college degree really doesn't mean anything. There's plenty of people who are successful in multiple businesses without it. Passing the test is the important thing.
Starting point is 00:41:04 But that's what it is. And Rich Paul has plenty of agents that work on it. Rich Paul's fine. Rich is gold. It's not going to apply to him. All right, good stuff. Antonio Cromartie on today's show. Reggie Bush stops by our show.
Starting point is 00:41:17 Coming up next, Aaron Rogers, Tom Brady. Last two days of both pushback in their organizations, but it's how they push back. Next, The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.

Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the MyCultura podcast network available on the IFart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Delivery matters, it always has, how you deliver something. If my wife asks me a question and I'm a little impatient or I'm not in the mood, I make sure I take a deep breath. I've made this mistake before. how I deliver a message of criticism, how I deliver it matters. I used to have an old boss. He was a baseball coach in college. Then he became a boss. He bought a baseball team. He passed away recently, but he said something to me that I've taken in relationships and business. When you have to
Starting point is 00:45:31 deliver criticism and you're kicking a guy in the ass, pat him on the shoulder. Put your arm around him. Listen, this stinks, but you're not doing your job. Because sometimes you've got to kick somebody in the butt, but you want him to know you care as you kick him in the butt. And I've used that my entire life. I learned that from a guy named Larry Kentop 30 years ago. He passed away. He was my first boss. And this is the difference between Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady. In the last day, they've both been unhappy with their organization. Tom Brady doesn't like how he's been screwed over in the contract. He can't get a second year. And Aaron Rogers yesterday,
Starting point is 00:46:11 they've been having these joint practices with other teams, and Aaron doesn't like it. And in both instances, both are telling you in their own way, I wish we had more power. I wish I'm pretty good at what I do. I'm maybe the best in the league. And, but here's how
Starting point is 00:46:28 Aaron Rogers talks about joint practices he doesn't like. I'm glad it's over. Why so we can get on to the rest of training camp I wouldn't mind if they didn't do it for another 14 years but I think if they you know look that's out of my control the tough part is they're not trying to show a lot
Starting point is 00:46:50 we're not trying to show a lot so there wasn't a ton of diversity in the plays or the defensive schemes you know the physicality is a good thing going against somebody else is a good thing. But schematically, there wasn't a lot shown. Okay, so he's telling the organization, you're wasting my time. Okay, Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time,
Starting point is 00:47:18 basically the Patriots gave him a one-year deal. Tom's not happy with it. But how he massages the message. Delivery matters. Here's how Tom unhappy delivers his message. It's really the reality for most guys in the NFL. I don't want to think that I'm any different than everyone else. Like, it's football is a tough business.
Starting point is 00:47:41 It's a production business. And, you know, I'm ready to go this year. And that's really what matters. And that's where my focus is. It is what it is. That's a good line. So whoever said it, it's very pertinent. So, like I said, there's a lot of guys who have, you know, one year left on their contract.
Starting point is 00:48:01 You know, so the situation, and I got one year to go and we'll see what happens. Okay, neither's happy, neither wants to go through the route they're going through. Both are kind of voicing their opinion, but one's a little more gracious and one's a little more snarky. That's the difference in their reputations. I tell this to young broadcasters, when you ask for a raise, when you ask for a replacement, how you deliver it will be the deciding factor in your reputation. I'll give you an example.
Starting point is 00:48:32 I forever used to be a subscriber to a newspaper. And when I lived in Portland, there was a newspaper called the Oregonian. It was very good. And it's a very wet state. And occasionally they get ice storms because of the Columbia River. There's ice. And so forever, I just got the newspaper. Even though increasingly I would only read parts of the newspaper because of phone technology and digital.
Starting point is 00:48:55 But I canceled my subscription because of how they deliver the newspaper. In a wet state, I had a little everything. in my house where you could just lob the paper under and it wouldn't be completely sopping wet. But one, Saturday morning, during an ice storm, they threw it. It missed my porch by eight feet, hit a bush, stuck to the bush due to the ice storm, and I got a machete out and had to get it off the bush, about cut my arm off. And whether or not the writers weren't any worse, the editors weren't any worse, the publishers weren't any worse, the photographers weren't anywhere to the newspaper. But the feeling I got was, you don't care about me.
Starting point is 00:49:31 me. You didn't even spend the time. You just winged it and you drove off before it landed. And how that company delivered their information to me bothered me and I said, you don't give a rip about me. I canceled. A lot of people have canceled newspapers. Part of it's the delivery. It's too slow. It's not urgent. You have yesterday's news and you keep missing our porch. How you deliver the message matters, always, especially when you're nice. Or your wife, excuse me. I'm in a taste that. Even with criticism with your wife.
Starting point is 00:50:09 Trust me, I've made a lot of mistakes in that department. I've made a lot of mistakes. Hour two next. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. This is the herd.
Starting point is 00:50:30 Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. We are live in Los Angeles, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me. Antonio Cromote is going to be joining me. Tyler Dunn, the former Packer reporter who broke the lid off of the dysfunction. Six months ago, I'll be joining us. Joy, how are you? I'm doing great.
Starting point is 00:50:48 I went to a vineyard last night. I'm not going to get into the place I was at. I went to a vineyard last night. You're a wine guy, right? In downtown L.A. But you own a wine store too, right? Yeah, yeah, whatever. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:01 Yeah, whatever. Wine gives you snake dreams, right? I can't drink red wine. It gives me snake. dreams. I had a glass of red wine last night and I got cobras attacking me for eight hours in bed. It's the craziest. I don't even know what it is. There's something. Apparently it's a thing because the last time we talked about this, a lot of people were tweeting us. It happens to them. I had a glass of red wine. I do it, you know, three times a year. I'll drink a glass of red
Starting point is 00:51:22 wine. And all night I'm sweating and being attacked by snakes. You ever win? Nope, not one time. Strangle the death in my own bed. It's horrible. I woke up this morning sweating. It's like, I mean, come on. Again, it's amazing. So I, there is a big. There is a big. difference, Joy, between star and superstar. Right. And I've seen people do this before. I want to tell you a little inside the rope story. So I used to work at a big sports company. Now I work at my favorite sports
Starting point is 00:51:46 company. The old place used to always say this when they were hiring somebody. Well, she's smart. He's smart. Give him a show. And I used to always say, are they smart enough? Who gives a rip? Are they good on television? I got friends who are bad on television. They're smart.
Starting point is 00:52:03 We're in the TV business. Are you good on television? It's the same thing with stars and superstars in sports. You can't explain it. Sometimes it just is. Anthony Davis is a star. Zion is going to be a superstar. How do I know?
Starting point is 00:52:19 He's already got his own shoe. Nike's going to give him his own shoe. He's played nine minutes in the NBA Summer League. He'll get his own shoe. Anthony Davis, seven years in the league, no signature shoe. Zion, and we called this a year ago, is a superstar. High energy. Very kism.
Starting point is 00:52:36 charismatic, flashy game, full of power and intensity and dunked. Anthony Davis is chill and sleepy and not charismatic. His nickname is Unibrow and his game is full of skill, but not that flashy and fun.
Starting point is 00:52:54 Seven years, no shoe deal. Zion nine minutes in. Nike's giving them a shoe deal. They're thinking and calling it Air Zion. I would call it Amazion. but that's cheesy. That's why I don't work at Nike. This happens all the time.
Starting point is 00:53:11 Baseball fans do this. Mike Trout is the best. Mike Trout's a star. Arod was a superstar. Bryce Harper feels more like a superstar. Mike Trout's a really great baseball player. Mickey Mantle, by the way, today would be a superstar. One of the reasons, Mickey Mantle had issues.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Mickey Mantle was flawed. Mickey Mantle was imperfect. Joe DiMaggio would be a star. there is a different Don Mattingly baseball star A-Rod American iconic superstar
Starting point is 00:53:45 and you know this is David Beckham in soccer David Beckham was never in the argument as a top soccer player in the world he married a spice girl he was absurdly good looking he did underwear ads they made a movie about him he had a smile a flare
Starting point is 00:54:01 a look David Beckham is a superstar messy is a far greater soccer player. And I'm not saying Messi's not a superstar. But Beckham was the biggest soccer star in the world. Wasn't the best player. LeBron's a superstar. Kauai's a star.
Starting point is 00:54:18 And it's not about your game. Your game has to fundamentally be solid, all-star level. But, I mean, that's the difference. There's a lot of really talented actors. Leonardo DiCaprio is a superstar. Ed Norton, Don Cheadle are stars. And they're both great. they're amazing actors.
Starting point is 00:54:36 It's not always just talent. It's not always your resume. It's charisma. There's a Kardashian quality. When you watch the Kardashians, I don't. I used to. They were just beautiful. They just looked good on television.
Starting point is 00:54:51 Their hair was perfect. Their skin was perfect. They were dynamic. They were, that's Zion. And, you know, the people doubting Zion. John Morant will never be a superstar. John Morant, I think, will be a star. And here's the thing I know about superstars.
Starting point is 00:55:09 You identify it real early. It's not like you get the right agent and you get the right, no, no, no, it's there, it's innate. I mean, good God. Kobe, you could see it coming for two years. He just needed to get older. He just needed to get on the floor. Shaq in college. Christian Leitner was a star in college.
Starting point is 00:55:31 Shack, first year on the NBA, was a superstar. And Zion's already here. All right, so I watched the HBO Hard Knocks, the Raiders, and they selected it. I wish they would have put more John Gruden in, to be honest with you. They could have had more Gruden. I don't really care about rookie safeties. You know, Derek Carr and Gruden are such opposite personalities. It's really different.
Starting point is 00:55:54 I mean, Derek Carr is one way, and Gruden's the other, and they're kind of opposite. I also think John Gruden is more player-friendly than people. think he's kind of a barker. But I don't think in today's NFL, you can, I don't think with sports today, you can, you know, debase kids and, you know, you got to talk to them. You got to communicate to them. You got to treat them like human beings, not human doings. And so there are little elements that I noticed.
Starting point is 00:56:16 But the one thing I just can't, that just keeps striking me with this when I watched it last night. You can romanticize the past. Don't be beholden to it. I don't think I've ever seen an organization that likes to talk about their history more than the Oakland Raiders. The alumni dinners, the seven-man sled, the John Gruden. We're going back to the way John Madden coached, silver and black. And once a raider, always a raider.
Starting point is 00:56:50 Listen, they have a really good history. But it's not as good as the Steelers. It's not as good as the 49ers. It's not as good as the Packers. It's not currently close to the Patriots. It's a good history back in the 80s. But when I watch Hard Knocks, I mean, I've never seen an organization. They just look in the rear view mirror constantly.
Starting point is 00:57:10 These players don't care. They weren't around in 1980. I mean, the truth is some of these guys weren't born in 1983. Like, who gives a rip? And the Raiders are just everything's about the silver and black, commitment to excellence. Once a Raider, O is a Raider. Alumni dinners. You go to the facilities.
Starting point is 00:57:27 There's pictures of old Raiders. then the one with Charles Woodson. It's like, the NFL is all about innovation. I said this 10 years ago on the air. Andy Reed and Bill Belichick, they were the first two guys in the NFL. And by the way, in my opinion, the best two coaches currently in the NFL. They were the first two guys, about 10 years ago, that on 3 and 3 decided that was a passing down. they were ahead of the curve.
Starting point is 00:58:00 Andy Reed on third and three. It was a passing down. Belichick, third and three. I'm going to find a tight end. They were ahead of the curve. And they both continue. Now, Belichick's got the rings, Andy doesn't, but they both continue to be innovators.
Starting point is 00:58:11 Sean McVeigh, Innovator. The coaches that don't last in this sport, Mike Ditka, at the end, feels outdated. Marvin Lewis feels a little bit outdated. The Raiders, good Lord, in a world of innovation. It is once a Rada, oh, a Rada. seven-man sled, alumni dinners.
Starting point is 00:58:32 It's like John, Blue Bonnet Bowl references. Stop looking in the rearview mirror. Forge ahead. Look through the windshield. I think that romanticizing stuff, I mean, Gruden speaks in TV cliches.
Starting point is 00:58:50 I mean, when you watch that show, it's like there are 75% football team at 25% television show. I mean, that kid for last, last chance, Can't you? I think he was put on the roster because he'd be good on a TV show. Richie Incognito would be good on a TV show. They're seeking relevance. They've got to sell season tickets in Las Vegas. Vegas got a hockey team ahead of the NFL team.
Starting point is 00:59:09 They're concerned about being able to sell 40,000 season tickets, selling suites. Because Vegas isn't a huge city, and they have a hockey team that's red hot, and they've sold season tickets, and they've sold the sweets, so they want to sell season tickets. And the NFL is really good on TV, and hockey is better in person. And the NFL is really good on TV. And Vegas can be really hot. in September, like 95 degrees.
Starting point is 00:59:30 So they got to sell tickets. And they're not selling them in Oakland. They tarp off the upper deck. And they're concerned about selling them in Vegas. So I get it. They're seeking relevance. The TV show, I get it. But I am over romanticizing the Raiders past.
Starting point is 00:59:44 It's not as good as Pittsburgh. It's not as good as the 49ers. It's not as good as Green Bay's. And they don't talk about it all the time. I mean, Pittsburgh, let's be honest about Pittsburgh. It was the Steel City. they've been one of the flashiest, most innovative offenses, deep ball, big talkers, wide receiver stars. Pittsburgh's always evolving.
Starting point is 01:00:07 I mean, Green Bay, last couple of years has been like, we've got to get young on defense, we've got to change coaches, we got to get more progressive. I don't know. The Raiders feel like, you know what they feel like the opposite of the L.A. Rams. The L.A. Rams came from St. Louis and literally said, none of our history matters. We didn't play in St. Louis. That's a rumor. St. Louis? We've never been to St. Louis.
Starting point is 01:00:27 The Rams are like, they don't even acknowledge St. Louis existed. It's like we're in L.A. It's a new. They acted like an expansion franchise. The first year they had Jeff Fisher. Then it was like, okay, we are literally getting rid of everybody not named Aaron Donald. That was part of St. Louis. Raiders are the opposite.
Starting point is 01:00:44 Like, guys, you're moving to Vegas, new city, new team. Get a new offense. Get a new cliche. Get a new five-man sled. Too much rear-view mirror stuff for me. All right. Antonio Cromarty's coming up. He may agree or disagree.

Antonio Cromarty played for 11 years, four-time Pro Boulder, and wants to be a coach and interned a little bit for the New York Jets. Yes, I do. You will be a coach. I will be. You're a very good communicator. You only come on our show like once a year. You're always welcome.
Starting point is 01:04:51 You're a busy guy. Hey, I'm willing to come on, and this is how you need me here. Okay, so you're with the Jets. I just want to clarify, because I live in Lodian, you're a lot. Los Angeles. People think I like the Jets because of Sam Donald. And I do love Sam Donald. Okay. Okay. You were at camp. You intern as a linebacker coach
Starting point is 01:05:06 because Todd Bull said you know enough about corners. Come coach the linebackers. So you dealt a lot with Sam Darnold. What did you see every day? His decision making was the best I saw from a young guy. Not only that, man. He can get the ball out of his hand so quick.
Starting point is 01:05:22 Learn the offense and picked it up very well. Can make every single throw. But he took control of the offense. That's what impressed me the most. Like, I was around a Mark Sanchez when he was younger. I was around a field of Rivers when he was younger. But I've never seen a young quarterback
Starting point is 01:05:38 like that, just take control of the offense and make sure he understood where guys are supposed to be. Now, he's a young quarterback. So, Darnold's the youngest quarterback ever to, I think, there's a stat in the NFL to throw for over 10 touchdowns. So he wasn't intimidated by veteran players.
Starting point is 01:05:53 No, I don't know. Intiminated for what? He's played at some of the big schools. He in the pack 10 or do pack 12 so you know it's like he's looking at it as I'm just going to go ahead and just doing what I'm supposed to do you know I'm going to make I'm going to make better decisions going to his second year that's what I think that's what the growth
Starting point is 01:06:09 part for him is going to come is making better decisions in the second in the second year and making the right throws and not put throwing a ball across his body when he doesn't need to yeah yeah and that's just part of the learning curve now Baker Mayfield I also think is talented I don't love his personality he's a little much for me I think you have to earn
Starting point is 01:06:25 respect before you chug beer I think if you're a franchise quarterback, I'd like you to have a little more discretion. But I'm told you, you're okay with the beer chugging. I'm okay with it. I mean, why are we giving Baker Mayfield so much problems when Aaron Rogers has done it? When Tom Brady has done it. I mean, it's just chugging a beer. He's having a great time.
Starting point is 01:06:45 He's not looking for, he's not looking for the attention. The attention is coming to him. You like your franchise quarterback doing that? It looked pretty good at that. For me, hey, I love it. I can go hang out with this guy off the field. So you think as a teammate, I'm good. Oh, I'm good.
Starting point is 01:07:02 Because I see what he's going to give me every single day in practice. He's going to, guys just going to study. He's going to work his tail off. He's going to make sure he try to make the right throws. He's going to do what's best for the team. I mean, this here is just him having a good time. I mean, we're still human at the end of the day. As players, we got to stop trying to put so much on the players like we're not human.
Starting point is 01:07:22 We're going to go out and have a good time, but we know how to make sure that we're safe and doing it the right way. I want to talk about the holdout with Zeke. You know, I was saying this earlier. If you won the Powerball, you can either take the lump sum and they give you less, or you can take the security. They'll pay it for 30 years. You don't get both. Because if you take the security, you get more money, but you don't get the lump sum.
Starting point is 01:07:43 If you're a football player and you come to me as an owner two years before you're up, I'll negotiate. Now, free agency was created for a bidding war. Yes, it was. Okay. But if you come to me two years before Free Agency, I'm just bidding against myself. I'll give you the security you seek, but I'm not giving you the security
Starting point is 01:08:02 and make you the highest paid player. Like I would struggle as an owner to do that. I mean, I think every owner struggles with that. But I think with Ziki's case, his whole thing is he's telling the team that he's going to hold out. You're going to hold out for what? You're not going to get a credited season, so they still got four years for you.
Starting point is 01:08:19 Not only that, but what are you going to do? You have two years left on your contract. They don't have to do anything at all. They can let it right out. next year's going to be a holdout. So, I mean, say, a lockout. So what's going to do then? So you're going to be out of football for almost two years.
Starting point is 01:08:34 Now, Levy and Bell held out for a year. It lost $16 million. I know he did. You lose $16 million. Like I said, the wisest thing I've ever been told by Keenan McCartell, never hold out. Lost over a million dollars or $2 million a million. Keenan McArdo, UNLV football player, wide receiver, Jacksonville.
Starting point is 01:08:52 Remember him well? Yes. Held out. Had a long holdout. say he lost over something, a million or two million something dollars. And he said, I never get it back. So at the end of the day, I understand the, the, the, the logistics of everything that you want to do. But let's be smart.
Starting point is 01:09:10 Why throw away money? Like Zika right now is losing $40,000 a day. A day. You will not ever get that money back. No matter how big your contract is, you will never get that money back. Because now you're losing that money on top of the money that you could have received on a long-term deal. Now, I believe you have to pay DAC. There are those that say next year's draft has three good quarterbacks.
Starting point is 01:09:35 Dallas could trade some of their good linebackers. I mean, I just look at DAC, and I think the eye test, Antonio, is tricky. Yes, it is. Eli Manning didn't pass an eye test. Cam Newton passes an eye test. Baker Mayfield doesn't pass an eye test. Russell Wilson didn't pass an eye test. Tom Brady at the combat didn't pass an eye test.
Starting point is 01:09:55 There you go. Yeah, when it comes to quarterbacks, I'm looking for a lot of shoulders up. When it comes to toughness, availability, decision making, I like that. Now, I test, he didn't have a great arm. Matt Ryan didn't have a great arm. No. Matt Stafford passes the eye test. He's got a great arm.
Starting point is 01:10:13 I'd pay back. What do you make of him as a franchise quarterback? Do you think he's a franchise quarterback? I believe he is. I definitely believe he's a franchise quarterback, but where do you put him at? I'm definitely going to put him above Kurt Cousness. I mean, Kirk Cursons is like he got paid. $29 million without a playoff appearance, no anything, no wins, no anything.
Starting point is 01:10:31 So has Dak proven itself to be that quarterback to get $30 million? Yes. Well, he's proven himself at least as much as Kirk Cousins. Oh, beyond Kurt Cousins. To me, I've just been honest. I agree. I think he's proven himself beyond Kurt Curson. And I think he should be able to get paid.
Starting point is 01:10:48 But it's the whole thing. You have those three guys. You have Mari Cooper. You have Ziki and you have Dek. So now who are you going to pay first? And how everything is going to work out? You say you want to put all of them in the top five. That's not going to work for everybody.
Starting point is 01:11:03 So how is that? How are you going to work that out? I would always pay my quarterback first. Oh, quarterback's always supposed to be paid first. But Zeke is also the, it's a front run for the offense. The offense goes through him. Run game, past game goes through him. Amari is the bonus.
Starting point is 01:11:18 That's just been real. He's the bonus. And if you want to really appell Marty, have paid them. That's why he brought Jason Whitney in to have another scapegoat when the thing is not going right with Amar and Cooper. Antonio Cromartie is joining us 11 years in the
Starting point is 01:11:34 NFL, four-time pro-Boulder. Hard knocks. I wouldn't love it. I felt like last night sometimes Gruden was kind of playing to the camera a little bit. I think if you put cameras anywhere in my life, I think I would play to them at some point.
Starting point is 01:11:51 Yeah, I think you have to. Right? So you were with the Jets when they did Hard Knott's. You were aware of the cameras, were you? You don't really be aware of them. I think people feel to understand, like, a lot of stuff that goes on with Hard Knock, it goes on before the season. It goes before you're going to training camp.
Starting point is 01:12:06 So everyone has that, oh, they're doing this life story, or they pick them one person or two people for that, for that night or that episode. Right. Some of that stuff happens before the season, and they follow you through the training camp, through the whole entire thing, and how everything is going. So, like, you don't really pay attention to him because during practice, They're on the sideline.
Starting point is 01:12:25 Yeah, they'll follow you around. But, like, when you're in your drills, they're there, but they're off to the side. They're doing everything else. They're filming other things, and you don't really pay attention to them. Unless they're calling you over and saying, hey, can we do an interview with you or something like that?
Starting point is 01:12:38 Did you watch last night at all? I didn't have a chance to get away to watch last night, but I heard that, you know, Grudence was making his speech, and then you had some guys, pushing back, and standing up and not, you know, I'm just like, at the end of the day, like I think someone said earlier,
Starting point is 01:12:54 Tony Brown was standing up in the back, like in the back, didn't want to be up in the front. Like, dude, you're the number one receiver on this team. You just got to pay a butt full of money. Like, you should be in the, not even, if you're not even the front row, go sit down, just show your respects. Your head coach is talking. And that's what it's about.
Starting point is 01:13:11 Some of the guys on our staff felt that, that some of the rookies were talking back to Gruden, and it wasn't, you know, Gruden used to be a barker. He was in command. He's loosened up. He's, some of the Raiders were not the most respectful to Gruden. Well, yeah, I think about this. All these players are entitled.
Starting point is 01:13:28 It's entitlement for them. It's not... Did you feel that at the end of your career? It was more and more happening? Yeah, it's more entitlement. You bring in the young guys, it's more about entitlement than it is going out and going to work for what you have. So take me to your rookie year and take me to
Starting point is 01:13:44 your last year. You noticed the change. For my rookie year, I mean, I have guys, Quinn Jammar, Drayton Florence, you know, LT in the locker room, Randall Gawfrey, Donnie Edwards. I had veteran-type guys in the locker room. So it was no point of feeling entitled.
Starting point is 01:14:00 Hey, they're welcoming, man. Hey, this is what we need from you. This is what we need you to do. It was plain and simple. I had Marty Schuytenheimer as my coach. So you had a bunch of strong leaders. Strong leaders. When you came into San Diego.
Starting point is 01:14:15 Definitely. Then as you ended your career, did you feel like players coming into the league, had a little more bravado, a little more attitude? A little more attitude or not being coachable. That's the number one thing. They feel like they already know everything. They do.
Starting point is 01:14:29 You got 20 hours a week in college. You don't even know how to study film. So if you can't study film, you don't know what you're going to do on Sunday. Yeah, you may have been the most athletic person on the team, but that goes out of the window. I was one of the most athletic person on the football field at one point in time too, but I had to learn the game.
Starting point is 01:14:46 I had to learn how to play. I had to make sure I watched film, and I had great coaches around me to help me do that. You didn't know how to watch film? No, I knew how to watch film. I learned that in college from Coach Mickey Andrews and them. So that was the one thing that I've, when I told my ACL, that was the number one thing I did. I used to go in the film room with my coaches when I turned my ACL at 545 in the morning and watch film with them because I was out for the year.
Starting point is 01:15:08 So I had a chance to learn how to watch film and learn how to play the game from a mental standpoint rather than a physical standpoint. And by the way, you want to be a coach? You intern for the Jets. Did you like it? I loved it. Every bit of it. You know, especially when you. you can see guys progressing in the right way.
Starting point is 01:15:24 When you see guys actually doing the things that you're teaching them to do and they're doing exactly how you need to do and making plays, it's the excitement of that. It ain't for, you know, to glorify myself. It's like you see them and they're maturing and they're getting the chance to understand how to really play the game. It's fun, like to see that and see the growth of a football player going throughout his career.
Starting point is 01:15:46 Yeah. So that was last year with the Jets. Yes. Who's the player on the Jets roster that's better than people think? think that's better than people think you coach linebackers is there a i would say uh williamson linebacker who came over from tennessee yeah he's he he is a lot better than what the people think and now c j mosley's there yeah cj mosley there so you add those two guys who has a very high football IQ it's going to be it's going to be fun not on that but you add to me the
Starting point is 01:16:21 best safety in the NFL on the team in Jamal Adams. Yeah. I'm talking about a guy that can go down there and he can call out every single play before it happens. You know, you know when the safety is great because if you watch football on TV, when the play starts, the safety's not in the picture. He's the only guy in the field. He's not in the picture. Jamal Adams often becomes the most important person in the picture when he starts on your TV out of the picture. He's on every play that matters.
Starting point is 01:16:51 Every play. Every play. He's an unbelievable talent. He and Earl Thomas in the last seven, eight years. Ed Reed just went to the Hall of Fame. Yes. Ed Reed was that. He was like an offensive player paying defense.
Starting point is 01:17:02 Earl Thomas and his prime and Jamal Adams, literally start the play out of frame, and it's remarkable that can cover sideline to sideline. Side line and sideline and side. And you're going to get that every single play from Jamal. And that's the thing. That's what I saw in practice. You know, that impress me a lot.
Starting point is 01:17:17 I think it was the second year player. He was just, I'm looking at that man. what was this dude running around like this? Coach Bow was like just watching. This dude was going 100 miles per hour every single play and communicate it. And that's what people thought to understand. If you can communicate very well
Starting point is 01:17:34 on the defense side of the ball, it makes a job easier for the other 10 guys. Yeah, he's verbal. He's very verbal. Yeah. Good to see you, Bob. Good seeing you, too. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 01:17:45 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So one of the bigger questions ahead of preseason openers is how much certain veteran players are going to play. And for the Jets, that's Levyon Bell. And since Levyon set out the entire 2018 season, he hasn't played a football game since January 14th of 2018. And yesterday, Adam Gase gave us an update on his status. It is a fine line with Levyon.
Starting point is 01:18:11 He hasn't played in a year. At the same time, when's the right time? Is it this game? Is it the next one? Is it the next one? Do we just not playing this preseason? go through the whole time and just give them reps. You know, I mean, all those questions,
Starting point is 01:18:25 those are what we keep talking about. Normally, I'm on your side with the playing veteran players. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's not like you need to learn the offense or how to play football or get accustomed to the team, but it's a little bit of a different situation with Levy on. I haven't seen him play the year and a half. He hasn't played in a long time, January 14th of 2018,
Starting point is 01:18:45 and this is a new offense and a new team for him. So, well, I think training camp is obviously very important. and he's there and he's, you know, he's getting the reps in. I do think it would probably be helpful for him to get a little bit of game action. I don't think he needs to play a lot, but I would lean towards, this is a specific instance where you probably want to get a little bit of time in at least a few of the preseason games. Last time I saw him play was really good. That's all I know.
Starting point is 01:19:10 He is going to have a huge ear, and it's the Kaui effect. It's the KD effect. We haven't seen him in a long time. He's been out of sight, out of mind. not for injury purposes, obviously, but he's going to be huge for the Jets this year. And it's, in my opinion, the main reason why you should have any faith in them as a whole as a team this year. So there's been an uncomfortably large amount of time and energy spent talking about Antonio Brown's feet. You've seen the picture of Antonio's feet.
Starting point is 01:19:40 Gross. Yesterday, we finally got an update that makes sense as to why he is having so many issues with his feet. So he posted this picture on Instagram. It's really hard to look at. Well, Chris Sims revealed that his feet were burned by entering a cryotherapy machine without the proper footwear. And he got frostbite. Yeah. They were frostbent.
Starting point is 01:20:03 So that's why he's seen limping all over the field in hard knocks. And he hasn't been practicing. I don't buy those. You know, years ago, I had a friend who bought into that kind of business. I don't buy into those. People use them a lot. I know. And athletes use them a lot.
Starting point is 01:20:17 I think it's probably a quicker, more efficient alternative to icing of sitting in an ice bath. But you have to wear footwear and gloves and wear a robe before you get in and immediately after you get out of the machine because it goes to minus 200 degrees. So it seems like I'm not going to jump to conclusions, but I'm assuming that he's used one of these machines before. so it seems a bit negligent to not wear the proper footwear in the machine because that's why your head is out of it so you don't get so you don't get frostbite and you have to wear the gloves and footwear inside of it so your toe your extremities don't is there any proof that if you go in one of these? You can't even have any moisture on you or your like your skin will pill off.
Starting point is 01:21:02 Is there any proof that people use this I mean besides internet blather and it it elevates people's lives are people living longer are they well I mean I don't know that people are necessarily living longer. Is LeBron going into these things? I'm pretty sure he does use them. They're used very, a lot of people. They increase your circulation or something? Well, they're for recovery, which is why a lot of athletes use it. It's mostly for recovery. It's used for other purposes as well. It's supposed to be used for weight loss. And I don't know about all of that. How about a big glass of water and sleep? Does that work for recovery? I think that some trainers would recommend that you throw a little ice in there too.
Starting point is 01:21:35 Although sleep and water are important. It just feels a little bit. It feels a little bit silly. LeBron actually has one in his house. They feel a little scamy to me. I think it's just a more efficient way to ice. Like, you don't want to sit in an ice bath for half an hour. Why aren't the people in Alaska the healthiest in the country? They're sitting around in a crypto climate. Have you seen Mark Slarith?
Starting point is 01:21:58 That's one guy in the history of the world. I don't have any data to support that claim you just made. I do know the LeBron is really healthy and does not get injured a lot, and he has one in his house. And I know a lot of athletes use it. I think it's just a, it's faster than icing and more efficient, but you have to use it the proper way. It seems like a silly thing you do to not wear the footwear or not you can't be in training camp. Finally, speaking of LeBron, besides the Rockets, the two LA teams have the biggest question marks as far as team chemistry next season. And according to Sham Sharania, LeBron, is organizing a Lakers team mini camp.
Starting point is 01:22:32 It will be held in Las Vegas prior to the start of training camp in September to get everyone on the same page and work on team chemistry. and in perfect fashion the Battle of L.A. continues. Shams also report that Kauai Leonard is working on forming a mini camp in Miami before training camp. So they both have a lot of new players with them. Obviously, Kauai is on
Starting point is 01:22:52 a new team and he's got to get accustomed to playing with Paul George, LeBron, and Anthony Davis. But... I actually like the idea. I like it. I think it's smart. You want to try and get as much reps in time in before the season starts. NFL quarterbacks, you know, Brady will do this. I saw Baker did this. He brought
Starting point is 01:23:08 he came out to L.A. and work with OBJ. Like, this is what you should do, right? Right. And I mean, a lot of these guys do work out together, and a lot of them are here in L.A. working out together in general. But as a team, away from everyone, to just get a few more reps in before camp starts, when everyone is concerned about the team chemistry going into a very long season, it makes sense. All right, Joy with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 01:23:30 And thanks for stopping by. The herd-line news. I got no problem. I'm always reluctant on this new physical stuff that changes the world, you know, like crypto cold and your feet and you're just 200 degrees below zero. I mean, they've been around for a while. I don't know. They're not that new.
Starting point is 01:23:48 I see people that hang out in cold weather. They look old and crusty and tired. I see people in warm weather. You're in it for three minutes. You wouldn't live in a place that's minus 200 degrees. You're not like chilling out on a beach chair in the snow. When's the last time you were in cold and you thought, I feel great? Never?
Starting point is 01:24:05 Never. But I'm on it. But it's not, you're not living. You're not freezing your house. You're in the machine for three minutes. I feel less healthy when my house is cold. Listen, you know, I hated icing as an athlete. Hated it.
Starting point is 01:24:18 Hated it. And my little heat pad. It feels very Bitcoin to me. It's very uncomfortable. No, it's not Bitcoin. John, do you think this feels like Bitcoin? No, I think it's a, I think it's just no one can afford to do it so we don't trust it. Too many.
Starting point is 01:24:35 LeBron put one in in his house. supposed to believe it doesn't work. He's got a he's probably got a cigar bar in his house. That doesn't mean you should smoke cigars. He's probably got a wine cellar in his house. You shouldn't drink wine all day. Would you not like a wine cellar in your house? No, I don't. I don't have a wine cellar in my house. That's because of your snake dreams. That's different. Yeah, that's why. I don't want giant
Starting point is 01:24:53 cobras all through my house. These machines are widely used. By who? By athletes and by people recovering from injuries. And people, like, look, people use it for anti-aging and weight loss and anti-exiety. And I don't know all that, but I do know that a lot of athletes
Starting point is 01:25:10 using machines. Sounds like some Frankenstein machine. And LeBron has had one major injury in his career. Yeah, when he started coming to L.A. and he bought a freeze-dried beef jerky cooler in his house. That's what it sounds like. It's a beef jerky cooler. If you put meat in there an hour later, it'd be like... It's where they keep all the deer meat.
Starting point is 01:25:27 I don't know. All right, coming up next, Tyler Dunn. He wrote that very, very intense article on the Packers. He'll be joining us. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, Weekdays and New Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 01:27:00 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important. to be a good person while you hear on earth? Starting point is 01:27:32 What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliver Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes,
Starting point is 01:27:46 hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rec, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker.
Starting point is 01:28:05 Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever. you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody!
Starting point is 01:28:18 Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives,
Starting point is 01:28:30 helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Starting point is 01:29:05 available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcasts. Somebody just mentioned to me, I don't like cryptocurrency or... Cryotherapy. Cryotherapy. Cryptocurrency and chirotherapy. I'm just a little...
Starting point is 01:29:24 By the way, Earl Watson played in the NBA. Does Earl use it? He does not use them now. Because his friend used it and what happened to his friend. And he was something similar to Antonio Brown's feed. He had some sweat and you can't have any moisture on you. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:36 And you have to wear socks and clubs. Tyler Dunn, yeah, there you go. Tyler Dunn, Bleacher Report. Just was at the 49ers camp. He's been at the Cleveland Browns camp. Of course, he wrote that article last year, Bleacher report about the Green Bay Packers.
Starting point is 01:29:50 Aaron Rogers didn't like it. The organization pushed back on it, and Tyler Dunn is now joining us. All right, let's start with the Green Bay Packers, that article. You came out, it was interesting. They pushed back. Was there anything beyond that?
Starting point is 01:30:04 Did you ever hear from them, Tyler? Because you got some pushback, but you had everything sourced. Right, right, Colin. Great to be back. Yeah, I mean, this wasn't invented. This was heavily sourced over several months as we talked about then. So, you know, I guess my reaction was really no reaction. You know, expected the 12 would go to where he went to to talk about it.
Starting point is 01:30:29 And, hey, I mean, as we wrote, there was somebody in the Green Bay Packers front office who said, hey, if anything written or said by the media, by somebody in the organization, about Aaron Rogers that he doesn't like. You know, he doesn't like that. It hurts him to his core. And part of that is what makes him so great. So I guess long story short, yeah, I mean, no reaction, to be honest. By the way, yesterday he said he didn't like the practices with other teams.
Starting point is 01:30:55 And it was kind of classic Aaron Rogers. He could have kind of graciously gone about saying I don't love him. He was a little snarky. And my takeaway was Brady was mad a couple of days ago about his new contract. But Tom's delivery message is, smoother and more gracious than Aaron's delivery, which is often a little filled with snark. And I think your article had mostly said, not a bad guy, but Aaron sometimes isn't the
Starting point is 01:31:20 greatest deliverer of messages. Is that fair? Very fair. There's something there's definitely a purpose behind it, sure. Okay, let's go to the 49ers camp. There's a lot of hype around Kyle Shanahan and a lot of hype around Jimmy G. But he started eight games, six and two for the Niners. what did you witness at camp?
Starting point is 01:31:44 Are you optimistic? Are you cynical about the hype around the Niners? They definitely aren't hiding from it. You know, they talk Super Bowl and they're not afraid who hears it. You know, I just kind of ask Fred Forrner, you know, point blank, is it Super Bowl or bust? And he said, yeah, you know, and really that reverberates throughout that entire roster. I think they know they're in year three. Kyle Shanahan made it clear day one when they return in the spring. You know, no more talk about culture, no more talk about process of time to win.
Starting point is 01:32:11 And, you know, I think they can realistically contend, despite some questionable picks and questionable signings. You know, this is a team that believes Richard Sherman is Richard Sherman again. And Sherman believes that, you know, another year removed from that Achilles. Solomon Thomas, a year removed from everything he went through. My gosh, he, you know, was unbelievably honest and said that he actually had some of those darker thoughts that his sister did until John Lynch basically saved his life in the cafeteria, you know, that they're going to need something out of him. And you're right, it comes down to Jimmy Garapolo and him being the prince that was promised. You know, if he's healthy,
Starting point is 01:32:47 there's no reason to think he can't be that extension of a great play caller in Kyle Shanahan, that Jared Gough is with Sean McVey in L.A. Yeah. No, I think to a large degree, you're right. By the way, you were at Cleveland Browns camp, I've been told. They're the youngest roster in the NFL with a rookie head coach who's never been hired as a coordinator. What was your takeaway on the Browns?
Starting point is 01:33:09 you know, really interesting there in Cleveland. This is a team that is really letting players be themselves, you know, everywhere that they've kind of taken on a lot of players that other teams gave away for mid-round picks. And, yeah, it starts with Freddie Kitchens and just talking to him. He wants guys to be themselves. And that could manifest itself in an incredible way. I mean, when you've got the kind of talent they do, I mean, my gosh, you look around, Colin. It's a little different in Cleveland than what you have in, you know, a Green Bay.
Starting point is 01:33:39 You've got an O'Dell Beckham, you got Jarvis Plantry, David and Joker, Antonio Calloway, Nick Chub, Kremehunt, everywhere you look on offense and on defense, there's talent, and it's Super Bowl talent. They believe it. And as long as, you know, that locker room doesn't spontaneously combust, they don't think it will. They think they'll be able to handle those problems. This is a team that could go from 1 in 31 to legit Super Bowl contender in, what, a year and a half. It's pretty unbelievable. Yeah, did you feel like Freddie Kitchens had control? it was his camp?
Starting point is 01:34:10 I did. I did. And it's a tough camp. I mean, they hit more than any team I've really seen. It seems like the practice always goes a little bit longer than you'd expect. And he's lively. I mean, he's getting after the officials. He's getting after the water boys.
Starting point is 01:34:24 He's getting after his players. And they're responding. You know, when you look for body language and player reaction, they're responding. They know that this is what it kind of takes to tear down an older dream and build a new one back up. I mean, they're not messing around it. It starts pretty kitchen.
Starting point is 01:34:41 Let's go back to Green Bay. Do you think the young LaFleur, Matt LaFleur, works with the veteran quarterback Aaron Nodgers? How do you think that relationship, that bonding, will work in your opinion? That dollar question, whatever it is. I mean, this is the most powerful person in the organization, two-time MVP, Super Bowl MVP,
Starting point is 01:35:04 future Hall of Famer, but he's not going to have that free reign in this offense. he had before. I know there's been a lot of talk about it, but it's true. Matliflor's going to want to call plays to set up other plays and considering that the talent that was around Aaron Rogers at his peak, the Jordy Nelson, the Randall Copps, the correct Jennings is like, you know, they could operate off a feel. I mean, they could get up to the line of scrimmage, see the same thing, not have to do anything about it, just audible without a signal. And
Starting point is 01:35:33 it was unbelievable. Some of the best offensive quarterbacking, you know, we've ever seen, but, you know, those players are gone. A new coach is in. It remains to be seen if he'll want to, you know, dumb it down for the lack of a better term when that's probably best for him. I thought that Greg Jennings really put it best. I mean, he said it's not like Aaron Rogers needs to make these drastic changes. It's subtle. It's doing what a Tom Brady did in that AFC championship game.
Starting point is 01:36:00 Hand it off to running backs to keep a patch from Holmes off the field. You know, if he takes that step at 35 soon to be 36, he can win another Super Bowl. I guess we just haven't seen those signs that he's willing to make those subtle adjustments yet. Tyler Dunn, who by the way last time was on the show, won our Big J. Journalism Award. He is vying for that coveted prize again. I'm sure it's in the back of his mind. It simply has to be.
Starting point is 01:36:24 Tyler Dunn, Bleacher Report. Good talking to you again. Enjoy the camps. Hey, thanks so much, man. Great to be back. Anytime. You bet. There's a couple of camps I'd love to go to.
Starting point is 01:36:33 San Francisco's camp is really interesting to me. I got Garoppolo, I got Shanahan, they have some pass rushers they didn't have before. Joey Bosa, D. Ford. San Francisco's camp to me would be fascinating. There's some teams like Minnesota's camp wouldn't be that interesting because I know they're good. And I know New England's good. There's a lot of, New England camp wouldn't be fascinating to me. You know, Minnesota, you know, Chicago, I kind of know what I got.
Starting point is 01:37:00 But San Francisco to me is the wild card in the league. I have no idea what they'll be. I think they're going to be really, really. good. I think Cowboys, Niners, and probably Jets camps. Jets are probably the message. And obviously, we're already getting to see Raiders games. Yes, we're seeing it on TV, HBO Hard Knocks. Final hours coming up. Reggie Bush stops by tons of new football stories today in Los Angeles.

Starting point is 01:41:12 Discover match for new card members only. Discover.com slash travel. Reggie Bush is joining us over a decade in the NFL superstar at USC, a program that could be very interesting in September, some tough games. You know, it's camp time. So John Wooden is a legendary basketball coach, the late John Wooden. He used to always say you win the games before you play him. Belichick, to a large degree, my buddy Damien Woody used to always say that.
Starting point is 01:41:35 When he was playing offensive line for Belichick, he said, you felt like you won the games on Thursday, Friday, that you were just more prepared. So let's go to camps. Give me the best camp, most organized camp you were ever at, and then the least functional camp you were ever at. Yeah, I think so one of the most organized camps I think I've ever been around was at USC with Coach Carroll.
Starting point is 01:41:56 He knew how to make practices and competencies. fun within the competition, right? And so football is stressful enough. You know, obviously when you wake up in the mornings, sometimes it's hard to get out of the bed. Your body hurts like hell. And you're just in pain, right? And you're sore as heck. And so anytime a coach can find ways to just make it a little less stressful, it makes the practice flow, right? And so Coach Carroll was a master at this. We had competition Tuesdays. And competition Tuesdays were, you know, had one-on-one pass blocking drills with the linebackers. Or you had one-on-one routes with, you know, the linebackers and safeties,
Starting point is 01:42:36 or you had the receivers had one-on-ones. And Coach Carroll would put you up, he would put the best competitions up on the screen in team meetings. And so if you got embarrassed or if you got beat, the whole team was going to let you know about it right there on the spot. And so that added to, I think, the camaraderie. Intensity, accountability. Yeah, accountability.
Starting point is 01:42:57 Like, if you ended up, if you got embarrassed and, And there was a couple of times. I was on there for maybe some pass blocking drills. But I would always, you know, get the linebackers back in one-on-one, because I knew I could kill them in one-on-ones. So I thought that was one of the most organized I've ever been around. And I think the least organized I've ever been around was my first year in Miami under Coach Sparano, rest in peace. And we just, it was just chaos.
Starting point is 01:43:22 We had fights every day in practice. Sometimes those fights might have carried into the locker rooms. Wow. Yeah, it was pretty cool. crazy. And it was my first, I was coming from New Orleans, we just won a Super Bowl, and I'm going to this, and I'm like, we got a lot of work to do it. We're not going to be that good this year. We continue down this path. And so we had guys that were late all the time in practice. Wow. You know, our star players. You know,
Starting point is 01:43:49 star players were the ones that were also part of the issue. And that was one of the reasons why, you know, we weren't that successful that year. Well, I'm watching hard knocks on HBO. I'm not a fan of camera. Some players, you know, Antonio Cromarty said it wasn't that big of a deal. He said a lot of the stuff, it's on the sideline. But it did look. We were talking as a staff this morning as we were preparing the show, that the Raiders looked a little loose. And there is a fine line. Was Pete Carroll loose? Was Sean Peyton loose? How rigid do they have to be? So Spirano, it was too loose. So when you look at the Raiders and some players are pushing back at John, I mean, what do you, what's the standard for intensity? rigidity, looseness, where does it fall? So I was my first training camp in the NFL
Starting point is 01:44:34 was with Sean Payton, his first rookie as a head coach. Wow. And that training camp was hell. And it was, you know, you hear the term hell week, it was a real hell week. We were hitting twice a day. We were at Millsaps in Mississippi. It was hot as heck.
Starting point is 01:44:50 And it was tough. He was trying to change the culture of the New Orleans Saints, right? because before he got there, they were the a inks, and fans would show up to the stadium with paper bags over their heads. And so Sean wanted to right away, you know, change the culture. So he came in kind of with that Bill Parcells mentality. Now, he's a disciple of Bill Parcells.
Starting point is 01:45:12 And so he brought that mentality to... Did it work? It worked. It definitely worked. I don't remember any times where, you know, there was a lot of pushback. There was only one practice I remember where, you know, the locker room kind of flood.
Starting point is 01:45:27 You know, sewage flooded. Oh, Lord. Players got mad about that. And it was one other time where, and I will say this, where Sean, he was beating us up too much. And the players, it was one day where we pushed back and we didn't want to come out to practice. And we knew that as long as we had Drew Breed on outside, we were good. And so we ended up going out to practice, but I don't think we hit that day. So I think there is a fine line between, because now Sean Payton, the Sean Payton now that I've seen, that's a totally good.
Starting point is 01:45:57 different coach than when I was there. Gruden looks a little looser than he used to be. Gruden is a totally different coach than when he was with Tampa, right? And probably with the Raiders the first time. So I think there is definitely a different Gruden we're seeing on TV, much like
Starting point is 01:46:13 there's a different Sean Payton now because I'm watching some of these games. Like when I went to some of the playoff games after the games, they're in the locker room celebrating. They got the strobe lights going and partying and dancing. I was like, this would have never happened when we was playing. Right. When we were there.
Starting point is 01:46:27 Well, yeah, I think cultures changed. I think there's more transparency. And I also think, I think players are richer. They're more empowered. So you have to let them win sometimes too. Yeah, I agree. That's a reality. Sometimes players let them celebrate their touchdowns.
Starting point is 01:46:42 Let's give the guy some fun, right? Because, yeah, by the way, football asks a lot from its athletes. It does. A lot. It's stressful enough as it is. And so anytime you see coaches that, you know, find a way to just make it just a little less stressful that day, just makes the practice and the day go by easier.
Starting point is 01:46:59 By the way, I am, you know, I never want to be as I age, grumpy old guy, right? So I try to embrace new stuff. But there are things that I believe in sports, and I still believe the peanut butter jelly sandwich is the best thing in the world to eat when you're hungry. I don't care. I don't want to hear about kale shakes.
Starting point is 01:47:16 No, I agree 100%. All right. I made a living off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in college. So a lot of old stuff is still great. Yeah. Okay. I don't like my quarterbacks, putting their hat on, backwards and chugging beer.
Starting point is 01:47:28 I don't like it. I just don't. You are a billion-dollar marketing promotional tool. So you tell me as a player, do you love when you see Baker doing that? During training camp, no. If this was off-season, you know, or if this was, you know, in a buy week, there's so much hype surrounding the Cleveland Browns right now that I'm almost a little worried it's too much hype for them to handle, right?
Starting point is 01:47:55 because they're already, they've already won a Super Bowl, according to, you know, the media and everybody else. They still have a lot of work to do. And so during training camp, listen, is this going to make or break his career? It is the youngest locker room in the NFL. It is the youngest. So to me, if anything, they need some maturity. Remember when Russell Wilson took over the Seahawks years ago? Pete's a very good, the book on Pete Carole.
Starting point is 01:48:22 He's great with young players. Yeah, he is. And then after about seven years, the stories get old. Richard Sherman's like, I've heard the story, coach. Right? So Pete with Russell Wilson came in. It was a very young team. And what was special about it is that Russell was uniquely mature.
Starting point is 01:48:39 Yeah, he was. As a quarterback, incredibly coachable. Deshawn Watson, by the way, I think he's uniquely. Andrew Luck. I agree. And Colts are pretty young team. I think when you're young, I like a mature quarterback. I think Baker feels like a frat boy sometimes.
Starting point is 01:48:54 He does. and, you know, I think he plays to that as well sometimes. And that's his personality. But I think to the optics of seeing Baker chug beer during training camp, all you do is open yourself up for scrutiny. Because if you start the season off 0 and 2 or 3, you know they're going to – the social media is going to remind you real quick that, hey, remember that time you was chugging beer?
Starting point is 01:49:18 Maybe you should have been chugging water and get ready for practice or something. You know what I mean? No, I mean optics. you know, optics matter. Optics matter. And you're the franchise quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, a team who has historically been bad for a long time. You're trying to change the culture.
Starting point is 01:49:35 You're trying to be part of that culture-changing process. And so not to say that I love him getting the crowd hype. I love everything about what he did, except just the part we're chugging a bear. Now, again, if it's off-season, by week, I'm cool with it. I'm okay. During training camp, probably not the best time. By the way, did you ever hold out?
Starting point is 01:49:55 You held out once. No. You never did. I don't love holdouts, but I sometimes get them. I do think running backs now feel like they're being marginalized. You ever have a friend holdout? Like I wonder if my team, training camp's hard. So I'm Zique.
Starting point is 01:50:12 All my guys are in training camp. Now, I may be working out in combo, but I am in combo. Yeah. There is something. I love Cabo, by the way. I love Cabo. I wouldn't, that wouldn't not be the place where I would go to hold out.
Starting point is 01:50:24 Right, right. But Guava smoothies, it's a great place to go. So it is, I wonder, do you think there's any players that look at him and think, bruh, come on to the States? Yeah, I'm sure there are players, you know, because it feels, listen, I go to Cabo to vacation. I go to Cabo to, you know, go on the beach and drink margaritas and go to Squid Row and, you know, all these other places, all these other bars down there.
Starting point is 01:50:49 And so it's not the place where you go to, stay in shape and to work out. And so I'm not saying that Zieg's not staying in shape, not working out. But yeah, I'm sure there are players that feel like that. Like, you could be in Texas holding out, or you could be, you know, I think he's from Ohio, from Ohio, you know, holding out and working out. But I think when you hear Kabul, everybody in here associates Kabul with vacation. Remember when Tony Romo on an off week a few years ago? Oh, yeah. They killed him for that. He got it. And again, it was an off week. But I remember,
Starting point is 01:51:23 thing on the air. It's just the optics aren't great. It's the optics of it. You open yourself up for scrutiny and then if you come back, let's say he comes back. And he's out of shape. He's out of shape. The first thing people are going to say was, well, you was in Cabo, what you expect? You know what I mean? So it's the optics of it. And that's why, again, do I think he may miss some games? I think he could miss some games because that's his only leverage. Reggie Bush, by the way, the college football show. It debuts August 31st. They didn't give me that list.
Starting point is 01:51:56 I think it's a 20... It's in a couple days. 23 days from now. August 31st. We got 23 days from now. All right. 23 days from now. And Labor Day weekend. By the way, interesting game.
Starting point is 01:52:08 I don't even know what network has at Auburn, Oregon. It'll be very interesting because Oregon's got the best offensive line in the Pac 10 in probably a decade. And Auburn makes a living on defensive linemen in the NFL. That's a really big game for the West. If Auburn wins it, they should. If Oregon gets pummeled... It's huge for the Pac-12. Because I think Oregon's the most talented Pac-12 team. Maybe not the best, but the most talented.
Starting point is 01:52:34 I agree. And Justin Herbert is special, and I think he has a chance to compete for the Heisman. Oh, yeah. He's really good. Yeah, he's really good. Reggie Bush. Good to see you, bud. Thank you. Enjoy with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline News. So, Zeke may not be at camp, but DAC is. Over the weekend, Jerry Jones praised Dak for his intangibles, and he went on to compare him to Michael Irvin, saying we couldn't have done it without his heart, soul, and leadership.
Starting point is 01:53:01 And USA Today asked Irvin about it. And he said, rarely you get the heart and soul of the football team at the quarterback position. Dak has that in him. I tell people, stop it. Stop being a dummy here. It's insane sometimes when I hear the analysis on Jack, and this man has won as many games as he's won. It's like everyone's looking for a reason not to believe
Starting point is 01:53:18 instead of opening their eyes for all the reasons they should believe. That's like well put. It's well put. Yeah. I mean, it is pretty much all intangibles with DAC. It's intangibles and it's winning. And when it comes to the winning, everyone tries to point to whatever's around Dak as the reason why they're winning. But at the end of the day, your quarterback kind of matters.
Starting point is 01:53:38 It's like you're talking about like Jason Garrett isn't good and Dak isn't good. Somebody's got to be good. Somebody's okay. And by the way, this whole eye test, I'm sorry, Joy. But I'm not saying he throws the ball like Patrick. Holmes. But the idea that I watch Dak and I'm like, he can't make throws. I don't, my eyes don't tell. I think he
Starting point is 01:53:57 throws the ball fine. I don't think he has Carson Wentz's whip or Patrick Mahomes's whip, but this eye test, I mean, okay, look at that throw right there. That's a big time NFL throw. I think that he is more clutch than he is
Starting point is 01:54:12 fancy. Like when you look at Carson Wentz and you see what Carson Wentz does, you see an X factor in him. And don't get me wrong, I think Carson once is great. but I need to see some consistency with his availability before I start thinking that Carson, that Carson Wentz is going to be better than Dak. Like, everyone believes that Dak is this middle of the road quarterback.
Starting point is 01:54:33 Well, they've had a winning record since he's gotten there. What is it that you need to see from Dak? He has all the leadership intangibles that you would want, and we know how mental and emotional professional sports is. What is it that you're missing? You know, Greg Kossel said this, and I think it's true. He can sometimes be a safe, thrower.
Starting point is 01:54:53 The knock on Dak is he doesn't let it rip. Well, let's be honest. He doesn't have Patrick Mahomes arm. He didn't have Big Ben's arm. Alex Smith didn't let it rip
Starting point is 01:55:02 and Alex Smith won a lot of playoff games. Would Dak be better served with a good arm, not a special arm, to let it rip when he doesn't have the device to squeeze it into these little windows in the NFL?
Starting point is 01:55:13 He knows what he is, which is... Knowing your limitations is an advantage, I believe. Phil Sims won Super Bowls that way. It's okay. Not everybody's Peyton Manning. Right.
Starting point is 01:55:21 So we've talked a lot about Antonio Brown's feet when you were just discussing with Redmond. Gross. You don't like new stuff. This is where I thought you were going. We finally had an update on why they look the way that they do. So he has been out of practice and he's been limping around camp. We saw on the first episode of Hard Knocks. Well, they're pretty gross.
Starting point is 01:55:43 If you're listening on radio, they're just processed. They look gross. And they're not like bunions. They're peeling. And what it is, Chris Sims revealed that. He burned his feet in a cryotherapy machine without the proper footwear. And we're showing LeBron getting into his machine that he has at home. And he has to wear gloves and socks when you get into the machine.
Starting point is 01:56:05 Look at that. It goes to minus 200 degrees. It's like a space machine. It is a space machine. I personally wouldn't use it because I would get claustrophobic. And I don't like the cold. Thank you. But I also didn't like icing as an athlete.
Starting point is 01:56:17 So I get it because it's much more efficient to do it this way. This is what aliens do. This doesn't even look... This is where we are. BioFreeze sponsors the Blazers. It's very popular. It's widely used by athletes. There's a lot of rules to it.
Starting point is 01:56:35 You can't have any sweat or moisture on your body. You got to wear socks. So my armpit turns into it with hangling, dangling tarantulas. I wouldn't partake either. But if I was a professional athlete, I'd probably consider that over having to sit in the ice tug for 20 minutes. That said, I feel like this is a system. the first time Antonio has used one of these machines,
Starting point is 01:56:53 so why you would get into it without the proper footwear? I don't know. It seems a bit silly because I'm sure they warn you because it looks like a pretty advanced device. What would we have to do to get you in one of those things? It's not going to happen. Maybe in 2040. Well, I was just hop in there after your tennis game.
Starting point is 01:57:10 You'll feel great. You know what? I'll have a peanut butter, jelly sandwich, take a nap, glass of water, boom. Great the next day. I like it. Finally, the NCAA is added criteria for agents who wish to represent student athletes testing the waters for the NBA draft. John Rothstein of CBS Sports tweeted the list, which is a bachelor's degree, certified with the MBPA for a minimum of three years,
Starting point is 01:57:31 take an in-person exam at the NCAA office in Indianapolis. People freaked out. People did freak out. The bachelor's degree requirement has led some to refer to it as the Rich Paul Rule, including LeBron, who tweeted hashtag the Rich Paul Rule. And then he put a bunch of laughing emojis and tweeted, can't stop, won't stop. They big, mad and scared. Nothing will stop this movement in culture over here. Sorry, not sorry.
Starting point is 01:57:55 Now, this rule doesn't actually really apply to Rich Paul because he has many agents under him who can handle the legal paperwork. I would be, you know, the official agent while he oversees other things. And once I pass into the NBA, it doesn't matter anyway. This rule is specifically for students, student athletes, who applied to the rule that they changed last year, which is that you can enter, the NBA draft, feel the response that you're getting, see if you will be drafted.
Starting point is 01:58:24 And if it doesn't work for you or you don't feel comfortable, you can come back and you don't lose your eligibility, which is exactly what they should do. It was the right rule to change. Now, Nick Wright said earlier, this is not really like applying to Rich Paul because we know the power that Rich Paul has and, you know, he's getting one done, they're leaving the NCAA anyway. That's mostly what he has. And they can't, the NCAA can't enforce rules in the NBA. It just, it's not how it works. They don't have any control over that. It's the next rich call that they're concerned about. Now, this is obviously also in a reaction to the FBI probe, which is, you know, sweeping college basketball.
Starting point is 01:58:59 The thing that people are most upset about is the bachelor's degree, which I can understand. Because if you have experience in any certain career and you don't have any of success, a college degree is really meaningless. Okay, I'll give an example. In Los Angeles now, you have to have a bachelor's degree to be a real estate agent. You didn't have to forever, and it doesn't, it's ridiculous. Yeah, it's ridiculous. That's ridiculous. But California passed it because they felt like we have to elevate the qualifications to be a real estate agent because they're, most people are fine, but there are people that are not qualified and making too many mistakes, leaving consumers vulnerable. These are universities that demand their coaches have degrees.
Starting point is 01:59:45 I don't think it's terrible to demand that the agents have degrees. the optics do look like you're going after Rich Paul. I agree with that. The timing could have been better. Well, yes. And going after Rich Paul is silly because it's only admitting to the power that they have right now. You are showing that you are, like LeBron said, scared of that influence. But the idea that they're protecting the kids, like I'm not buying so much into that.
Starting point is 02:00:12 You should have to get some required courses or whatever. The other requirements, I'm perfectly fine. with. And I don't necessarily even agree with the coaching degree. I mean, if you play in the NBA and then you are an assistant coach for five years, you can't then become a head coach in basketball because you don't have a college degree. But I think the rule is you have to have an degree to coach. To be a head coach, yeah, you do. But I'm saying if you, so you have all the experience on the court and then you get your coaching assistant years in, you've paid your dues, but then you can't become a head coach because you don't have a degree. No, I mean, it's a
Starting point is 02:00:43 legitimate argument. I think that's fair. I mean, there's a lot of people, Bill Gates does have a college degree. I don't think that there's that many outliers in that situation. I'm just hoping to get a doctorate from some school with a good radio TV department at some point. That's all I'm hoping for. A joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. There's a lot of things we know about the NFL season that most of us could agree with. But how about the 10 biggest questions going into the NFL season with some really
Starting point is 02:01:12 good teams potentially? That's coming up and best for last. Be sure to catch live editions of the heard weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHard Radio app. I'm watching Hard Knocks last night. There's a lot of things we know in the NFL. I mean, I think we all admit the Raiders aren't winning the Super Bowl. I mean, I think we all admit Miami's not winning the Super Bowl. I think we all know the Patriots, our chiefs are vying for the Super Bowl. But there are good teams with questions and bad teams that may be better than we think. and I thought, what are the 10 questions? Raiders didn't make the cut.
Starting point is 02:01:48 I don't think there's a lot of questions about the Raiders. I think they're pretty easy to figure out. They're loud. They're not going to be great. What are the 10 biggest questions going into the NFL season? So here we go. You guys ready to go? Here's number 10.
Starting point is 02:01:59 Number 10. What's the Ravens real plan for Lamar Jackson? So they were six and two last year with him. But then the one time a team got to play him the second time, the Chargers, I mean, it was really ugly. He was totally limited. He never threw for over 205 passing yards. So it's one thing to say we're going to do some of this old school football.
Starting point is 02:02:21 But I think when you're in division with Ben Rothlisberger, you got to play him twice, and Baker-Mayfield and OBJ and Nick Chubb and Jarvis Landry and eventually Cream Hunt and got play them twice. You can have to score some points, and they lost a lot of their defensive stars. So what's the real plan for them? Are they going to be ground and pound and not throw the football? I want to see with Baltimore. Number nine. Can Jimmy G.
Starting point is 02:02:43 stay healthy in San Francisco. Listen, he's 8 and 2 in his career as a starter. But he got hurt, not getting hit last year. He tore his ACL in week three in a non-contact moment. I don't doubt he and Shanahan are really going to click. And I think they've upgraded their O-line and their running backs and their wide receivers. And George Kittles, they have a great young tied end. But this is a real concern.
Starting point is 02:03:09 I mean, Carson Wentz got hurt, but he got hit. But when Teddy Bridgewater got hurt at practice, In a non-hitting drill, you're like, uh-oh, Jimmy G got hurt, not getting hit. Is he fragile? He got hurt in New England as well. I think it's a big question. Number eight. Lavian Bell sat out a year.
Starting point is 02:03:27 What Labian Bell do I get? Do I get the guy who had 406 touches two years ago who could catch, could block, could run? You know, I mean, he sat out, he lost some money. Do I get a good attitude? Do I get a guy that's a worker? Do I get a guy that's going to buy into a rebuilding Jets team? This is not the Steelers. They're not a Super Bowl team.
Starting point is 02:03:48 Does he buy into Sam Darnold? Adam Gase can be intense. They're going to throw the ball a lot. He's probably going to have to plan preseason because it is a new system. What labian bell do I get? If I get the good Labian bell, I think this Jets team is really, really interesting. Number seven. Can the Saints recover from last year's NFC championship loss?
Starting point is 02:04:07 Drew Brees can, but apparently the court system, judges, players can't. We've seen this. Teams that lose Super Bowls over the last 15 years often do not recover. Atlanta did not recover from it. It is a real malady. Carolina, you get all that emotion and you get let down. And teams do not bounce back after Super Bowl losses. New England is an exception. So can they recover from that heartbreaking loss at home to the Rams? Number six. Can Cam Newton stay healthy? Listen, they were six and two last year when he was healthy.
Starting point is 02:04:44 Christian McCaffrey has been better than advertised, I think. I think they've got a very good defensive team. I think the division's tougher. Can he stay healthy? He's not going to play in the preseason. I'm okay. But Cam, I think a big component to his success, especially in that red zone, is running.
Starting point is 02:05:04 When he keeps that ball in the red zone, he is a load and they are really tough to defend. Can he take those hits and stay healthy? Number five. Levian Bell and Antonio Brown are now both gone. What's the Steelers' offense look like? I don't have any question. They'll run the ball with James Connor.
Starting point is 02:05:22 They drafted running back out of University of Kentucky. I think they'll run the football fine. But Antonio Brown is an over-the-top player that forces you to roll your coverage over, double team, to keep safeties out of the box. Juju Smith-Schuster's a very good receiver, but he's not a burner. He's better in crowds. He's better in intermediate routes.
Starting point is 02:05:42 So I do think Antonio Brown changes like Tyreek Hill leaving Kansas City, if he ever did. It does change the offense to some degree, and I think Big Ben loves the deep ball. So now Lavian's out. Now Antonio Brown's out. How explosive is the Steelers offense? Number four. Is Kyler Murray going to work? I have no idea.
Starting point is 02:06:03 I still go back that he looks small. is he going to be able to avoid hits? I have been happily surprised that he's been very good on the whiteboard, very good directing the offense. I think that is a direct connection to Lincoln Riley. They said the same thing about Baker Mayfield. He was beyond his years in schematic football. They say Kyla Murray is beyond his years schematically.
Starting point is 02:06:26 But listen, the Cardinals have also a rookie coach. They've got a really bad offensive line. It's a tough division. There's a lot of good pass rushers in that division. the Rams and the 49ers bring the heat. I just want to see how it works. I have no real idea. I just got to see it.
Starting point is 02:06:42 Number three. Brown's youngest roster rookie head coach and a second year quarterback. Are they going to fold under the expectations? I don't doubt if they go on four-game winning streaks, this team's going to be just like Carolina a couple years ago when they got to the Super Bowl. You're not going to want anything to do with them if you're playing them after they've won three straight. But what happens weeks after ugly losses? What happens when OBJ gets shut down?
Starting point is 02:07:05 What happens when Baker is a little outspoken during a losing streak? Freddie Kitchens. Can he corral that locker room? I think they're good. I think they're talented, but I think they're really young. And my question is, how do they deal with the hype? Number two. Well, Aaron Rogers' personality, he's got a strong personality.
Starting point is 02:07:24 Will it clash with Matt LaFleur, the new coach, who was a coordinator for one year in Tennessee, and Mike Vrable got tired of him, and it didn't work that much? I don't think anybody doubts LaFleur's smart. I don't think anybody doubts Aaron Rogers is just super talented, hyper talented. But, you know, that doesn't, Mike Tomlin's good and Big Ben's good. They clash sometimes. So even Brady and Belichick clash. So how do they work?
Starting point is 02:07:49 Basically, LaFleur wants everything on a play sheet. And Aaron Rogers likes to add a little bit because he's really good at ad living. How will it work? My guess is it works fine. There'll be some bumps, but it'll work fine because I think his defense, finally Aaron Rogers has a pretty good defense. number one. When will the Zeke holdout end?
Starting point is 02:08:09 Are the Cowboys going to let it roll? Roll the dice, go 3-0 against a rebuilding early slate. They've had three different running backs flourish behind that offensive line. I think Dax better. I think their defense will be better. I think they have new progressive offensive coaches that'll be more clever. What's going to happen? Is Zeke going to come out of the holdout and be in shape?
Starting point is 02:08:30 I think they can get away with it. Do the Cowboys play hardball? I think it's a very interesting. story. One, we do not have an answer to, and I can't wait to watch it play out. There are other teams, like Denver, how's Flackle going to work? Fine. That's not really a, Raiders, they'll win some games, not a ton. You know, Chiefs, Colts, Patriots, Chargers, they'll be good. Rams, Eagles, they'll be good. But there are some questions, even with good teams how it all transpires.
