Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.

I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Find your local station for the Hurt at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Hurd. to Fox Sports Radio. Friday after the draft show, this is the herd. Live in Los Angeles, Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. It is great to have you in today. Joy Taylor is joining me for what last night was just nothing but bugles, fun, coasters, drinks, dog, me, draft, and having the best time of my life,
Starting point is 00:02:57 texting, scouts, and executives all night. as fun as the world gets for me last night. Joy, how are you? I'm great. So you did use the coasters? Oh, no coasters. Sloppy house. It was, wife was gone.
Starting point is 00:03:09 It was great. Had so much fun. I could blast the New York Giants today. They took a quarterback at number six, who I do not think is good enough to be a quarterback at number six. And I'm listening, driving in today. And everybody is saying, well, the only reason they drafted Duke quarterback Daniel Jones is because the Duke coach is friends with Peyton.
Starting point is 00:03:29 and Eli Manning, and that is true. That is not why I'm going to blast the New York Giants. I don't have a problem listening to Peyton Manning ever. Peyton Manning is smart. If Peyton Manning tells you to do something, Bill Belichick would listen. I mean,
Starting point is 00:03:45 every smart coach, Bill Walsh would have listened to Peyton Manning, the late Bill Walsh, if Joe Montana would have talked back then. All great coaches. Andy Reid would listen to Peyton Manning. Sean Payton would listen to Peyton Manning. The best coaches ever would listen to Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning. So if Peyton Manning calls and says draft him, I'm not going to beat you up for that.
Starting point is 00:04:04 And this kid does play a little bit like Eli Manning. And he's giving you two Super Bowls. So I'm not going to bang on the Manning family for this draft pick. Urban Meyer, Bill Belichick's friend, Nick Saban, Belichick's friend. He relies on his friends all the time. Friends, you listen to him in life. I'm going to bash the Manning for the Daniel Jones pick. Here's what I don't like. And it's not even just specific to this kid who I don't think is a high first round pick, is that life sometimes gives you breaks. When I lived in Portland, Oregon, beautiful summers, wet winters, and springs. But occasionally, in the spring, you get a week of sunny weather.
Starting point is 00:04:45 You know what you did? Got outside. When the surfs up, br, grab your board. It's not always up. Last year, the NFL gave you a break. It was a quarterback year. So the teams that needed a quarterback, the Giants, last year you'd take a quarterback. You had like four really good prospects.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Baltimore didn't even urgently need one they took one. Buffalo moved up, Jets took one, Cleveland took one. Cleveland had taken a bunch of quarterbacks. They're like, we can't pass on this. The NFL gave you a break. The Giants needed a quarterback, and they passed. This year, the NFL draft gave you a break. They needed an edge rusher, and it was a very rare year where there was a bunch of edge rushers in the top six picks.
Starting point is 00:05:29 and take advantage of it again. Listen, man, when you live in a wet city and you get a break in the spring and it's sunny for a week, get outside, go for a walk, go for a jog, you don't get breaks like that. And another mistake, this draft today is actually the better day. This is not a draft with a bunch of great players, seven or eight. It is a draft. Tonight's the second and third round. All the smart teams, the Colts, move their picks to.
Starting point is 00:05:59 today. The Patriots got picks today. The Seahawks moved out. Picks today. This is a draft today for all the real smart guys in the league is where you'll want to be. What do the Giants do? Three picks in the first round. What the hell are you doing? You don't want three picks yesterday. The Raiders had it. The Giants had it. What you want is picks today. Because this draft had a bunch of good players. Very few great players. I mean, Nick Post is a great player. Quinan Williams a great player. Kyler Murray could be a great player.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Josh Allen, Ed Oliver. You're looking at guys who could be Andre Dillard could be great players. Today, 70 really good players. 80. So that's my, that's, that's, that's, that, don't blame the mannings. That's what drives me nuts. Three other issues. Dave Gettleman said when he drafted Daniel Jones, he could sit for years.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Really? Who, who uses a number. sixth pick when you need all sorts of defensive help. Pick an offensive, got to sit. You're paying him like $25 million. You need guys who can play. You watch Carson Wentz. You watch the Cowboys offensive threats.
Starting point is 00:07:11 You may need a pass rusher. I just don't like the idea number one of Dave Gettleman saying, yeah, we've picked a guy at six. We'll pay him a bunch, not playing for two years. Okay, good division. I don't like it. Secondly, MetLife Stadium is windy. Philadelphia on the road is windy.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Washington, D.C.'s cold and windy. You ever seen that Philadelphia Stadium? It's by a river. Potomac in D.C. Cold, wet, windy. The Hudson. Windy, cold, rainy, wet, winter. This guy's got an average arm.
Starting point is 00:07:40 His best comp. The guy he most looks like in the NFL is Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan went to a prep school, not highly recruited, went to Boston College, average arm. But Atlanta liked him because he could play indoors eight times a year, indoors in New Orleans, and Carolina and Tampa, warm weather cities. So Matt Ryan wins two out of three games.
Starting point is 00:07:59 in warm weather, indoors, dome. You know what his record is outdoors? 500. You know what Matt Ryan's record is in like bad weather? Under 500. So I don't even like the fit here. And the third thing is, Dave Gettelman said several times, the GM of the Giants is, hey, you do not draft for need.
Starting point is 00:08:17 You just draft best player available. So you're telling me that Daniel Jones is a sixth best player in the draft? Come on, bro. Sam Darnold, he was six best player in last year's draft. Daniel Jones is not the sixth best player, so now you're a hypocrite. You're saying one thing and doing another. I'm not bagging on them for the Manning connection. I'm not going to do that because this league is about connections.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Andy Reed's tree and Belichick and, you know, the late Bill Walsh and Parcells and Bill Polians and the steward, Sean Payton and Belichick, and they've all got trees. And you're always talking and trusting a handful of guys. That's okay. connection doesn't bother me. If Peyton Manning calls Dave Gettleman and said, I've had this kid at my camp two years, I really like him. And he's the kind of kid.
Starting point is 00:09:06 He reminds me a little of Eli, although I do not think he has Eli Manning's arm talent, Eli's first seven, eight years in the league. I thought Eli had a really nice gun, a really nice arm. But, man, life just doesn't give you breaks like this. The draft gave you a huge break last year. You needed a quarterback, and there was a bunch of good ones up top. And the draft this year, you needed an defensive end to give you a huge break.
Starting point is 00:09:27 There was a bunch of them up top. You didn't take them. And then this year, the values all today. And eh, you don't have many today picks. But you add three, you move up to get into this round. I don't think they know what they're doing. They have one pick tonight. Third round, 95th overall.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Trade two second round picks last night to move back into the first to take a corner. Who moved to the second, third round? Who moved to tonight? Colts. Chris Ballard, arguably best GM in the sport. Seattle. John Schneider, Pete Carroll, Super Bowl. know what they're doing. Patriots already have a bunch tonight.
Starting point is 00:10:05 All right, let me shift to this. I want to talk about the Packers. So I said this over the course of the last couple weeks that Green Bay knew two years ago they were going to pay Aaron Rogers a bunch of money. Seattle kind of got caught off guard with Russell Wilson demanding money and here's the date. But Green Bay knew a couple years ago we got to pay Aaron a ton. And so Green Bay smartly started drafting all. sorts of defensive players. Let's get cheap, inexpensive on the defensive side, because we're going to
Starting point is 00:10:34 pay our quarterback $35 million. So I thought, and it's just crazy. So last night, they even doubled down on it, and I thought they may go finally offense. Nope, they went Rashon, Gary, Michigan, good player, injury concern, but good player, and a great safety at Maryland, Darnel Savage, who's a big hitter. So now think about this. The last nine top draft picks by the Packers, and that includes last year's first three rounds, 2017's first four picks, and last night's top two picks, all defense,
Starting point is 00:11:08 nine for nine defense. And in free agency, three of their four signings were defense. So of their last 13 top acquisitions, 12 for defense.
Starting point is 00:11:28 So Aaron Rogers, we got you a new offensive coach, he's a hipster, and we've loaded up your defense. It's all over for excuses. Okay? Because there's been two excuses the last several years. McCarthy's a dope. All right, we got rid of him. And, you know, defense, Aaron always has to save the team.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Those days are over. By the way, there's always been a very weird stat connected to Aaron Rogers despite his talent. How come he has so few fourth quarter comeback? Ryan Tannahill has more. Aaron Rogers only in his career has 14. Isn't that remarkable? Matt Ryan's got 27. Joe Flacco's got 18. Andy Dalton's got 20.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Ryan Tannehill's got 15. Aaron Rogers has 14. What? Well, well, well, last 11 years. That's all he's got. And the excuse has always been. Well, I mean, the defense screws him over. They don't have any.
Starting point is 00:12:25 That's actually not true. In fact, Green Bay hasn't drafted an offensive player in the first round. since 2011. And oh, by the way, Aaron Rogers is actually the last offensive skill player drafted by Green Bay in the first round. That's always been a fake excuse. That's always been a phony excuse. The truth is,
Starting point is 00:12:45 Aaron Rogers is not a great come from behind quarterback. Matt Ryan's got double to come from behind wins. And he hasn't always had a great defense. Andy Olten has no always had a great defense. Ryan Taney has always had a great defense. but let's stop the excuses for Aaron now because the two excuses were, well, yeah, the defense just can't. They have completely absolutely 13 of their last 14 high draft picks or free agents of note, except for Billy Turner, the O lineman, have been defense.
Starting point is 00:13:22 And I like a lot of their picks. But don't tell me anymore they don't have good defensive players because they are, nobody misses, that much. They've got plenty of good defensive players. And the myth that they've never given Aaron any good defensive players, go look at what they've drafted. They draft defense, O's first pick. That's what they do. And so all the excuses now, the McCarthy, done, that we don't have any defense, done. Now, I like what they did. I'm picking them to win their division, but the excuses are now officially over. All in, no subtly, new nuance. We are just going last three drafts. All defensive players at the top.
Starting point is 00:14:04 They're nine top draftees, last three draft. All defense. That's incredible. Coming up next, what to make of Arizona. I think they, in a couple ways, I get what they did, but I think they butchered something and forgot a basic rule in sports that works for all leagues. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific

Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?

He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey.
Starting point is 00:16:45 I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levant this plant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entire. entirely different worlds. Just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WNBA standout, Kate Martin, and rising hockey star, Layla Edwards.
Starting point is 00:17:45 If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki. The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me.
Starting point is 00:18:06 And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts for wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:18:29 Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports. There's an old saying, pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered, meaning just don't be greedy in life, take profits and run. So the Arizona Cardinals now have two quarterbacks. Again, I'm not going to beat him up for taking Kyler Murray. I think you can make an argument with their bad offensive line in Cliff Kingsbury. Kyler Murray makes sense. Not going to beat him up, just like I'm not going to beat the New York Giants up in their GM
Starting point is 00:18:53 because of the Peyton Manning-Eye connection. If Peyton called me, I'd listen, okay? If Peyton Manning called and said, I love this guy, that part I'm good with. I'm okay with draft and Kyler Murray. I wouldn't have done it, but I'm okay with it if you think it works with your new coach. But here's a story that came out from Robert Klemko. According to a league source, the Cardinals GM, Steve Kaim, began shopping rows in earnest just minutes before the draft. They were seeking a first-round pick and return.
Starting point is 00:19:21 no team was going to give up a first round pick for Rosen. I agree. That's what I've been told. Rosen only found out about the team's intention to draft Kyler Murray moments before the pick. Okay, that's just a bad look. For a general manager, Steve Kahn, that's on a hot seat, that is a bad look. It looks frantic. It looks disorganized. So that's the first thing. The second thing is, everybody in the NFL knows now you have to get rid of Josh Rosen.
Starting point is 00:19:46 You were offered a second round pick I know by two NFL teams. Two, I'm not going to mention because I don't want to burn my source. But two, one really good NFL team and one okay NFL team offered you a second. Pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered. Now everybody in the world knows you need to get something out of him. So you have no leverage when you call people. This is why I defended the Pittsburgh Steelers on Antonio Brown. The Pittsburgh, there's an old rule, unless you have a superstar.
Starting point is 00:20:16 like Michael Jordan in his primer, Kevin Durant. Then time is your friend. Time's your ally. Just wait. Let people call you. But when you have an average player, an injured player, a player that's a diva, get him out of the door. Times your enemy.
Starting point is 00:20:32 So the Pittsburgh Steelers with Antonio Brown were like, listen, we've gotten a ton out of him and paid him nothing, mostly. We get third and a fifth round pick, and we get the distraction out of the building. They got him out of the building. that's how you do it. When the Indiana Pacers years ago, Paul George said, I want out. What do they do? Boom, got him out of the building.
Starting point is 00:20:54 Victorola Depot, Sabonis got a bunch of value. They didn't want that thing simmering in the press and Paul George belly aching and lowering the leverage. Josh Rosen, you had to get him out. You got greedy on this. And I kept telling you this is that when a general manager moves up to get a quarterback, they get greedy because they don't want to give him away. They have made a draft mistake.
Starting point is 00:21:15 and Arizona probably paid too much. There was never a huge market for Rosen. A guy I like, not as much as I like Sam Darnold, but I liked him. I think he's talented. But there's clearly now that he's been banged up a little in the NFL and college, there's not a ton of market for him. And that's your job as a general manager to know there's not a big market for him, because now you're screwed.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Now you pick up the phone and call people. They're like, hey, yeah, it's the Arizona guy. What do you want to give him? A bucket of golf balls, end table, road map? There's not, you don't have any leverage. So just don't get greedy. And now the problem is the Giants and the Redskins both needed a quarterback. They've taken care of it.
Starting point is 00:21:55 And today there's three more teams. Chargers could use a backup. New England could use a backup. If you don't get it done today before the draft starts, there's three more. I think Cincinnati would like to draft a quarterback to back up Andy Dalton. He's getting up there. So the longer you wait, all the teams that need quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:22:11 you're running out of suitors. You're running out of people. at this point you take a fourth round pick get him out the door because Josh Rosen this morning took all his stuff off social media that's no good so he didn't he's bitter but I defended completely the Pittsburgh Steelers when they moved off A, B. And I said they got two picks, they tend to draft well, they already have good receivers, they got the distraction out of the building
Starting point is 00:22:37 and oh, by the way, they already made a ton off him. They picked him in the sixth round. They got 74 touchdowns out of him. Don't be greedy. Get him out the door. Get him out of the room. And go on with your business. They should have done this with Rosen a month ago. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:22:53 No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So, Dwayne Haskins is out to prove teams wrong. Washington took the Ohio State quarterback and Maryland native with the 15th pick last night. After being the third quarterback taken, Haskins is on a mission. I'm more motivated now than ever. It's a bigger tip of my shoulder.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Lee done messed up. And I'm a blessed by God. Look at my family. I'm right down the street. So we're going to do it right this time. So it's crazy. He's going to be playing really, really quickly. And I don't think he's ready to play really, really quickly.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Well, he feels like he is. And he feels like some teams messed up on him. He also got a tweet from his most famous supporter, a guy that rooted for him when he started Ohio State last season. Josh Hart tweeted, King James looks like you might have to root for the skins a little bro. And the brawn responded definitely rooting for Dwayne Haskins, that's for sure. Hope all who
Starting point is 00:23:50 passed on him pay for it, but I ain't ruined with your skins. No way, Jose, my friend. L.O.L. Because he is a Cowboys fan. Yes. So he has been spotted on other sidelines. That's not here nor there. But look, I'm okay with finding some motivation in going where you went in the draft, even if it really doesn't, for the whole perspective of it,
Starting point is 00:24:12 make that much sense. Everybody didn't need a quarterback. I mean, the Giants thing, for sure. Like, you can definitely beg that. He's going to be compared to him. The two of them are going to be compared to each other through the rest of their careers because of that move. So I understand that. But it's a good space for him anyway. Like, he's going to have an opportunity to take over the franchise right away. Yep. And we'll see what he has. Let's see what he has. Yeah. I feel bad for the kid, though. If you start looking at the Redskins early schedule, it is nothing but great defenses. Dallas, Philly, good pass rush Chicago, and they don't have any receivers now.
Starting point is 00:24:47 So if, let's say, Case Keenham starts for the first month, they're not going to score any points. And the local kid, the media is going to be all over Dan Snyder, who's impulsive. So they're going to jam this kid in there, and he's going to get overwhelmed because it's just like everything else. He started one year. Not all kids are ready to play. Aaron Rogers was not ready to play in the NFL. Part of his success is he got to watch Brett Farf. And I think this kid, I think this really hurts him.
Starting point is 00:25:12 It's a bummer. There's so many places he could have gone, I would have loved. I think the Giants would have been a much better fit. I agree. However, you know, sharks are born swimming. I think that you have to learn as you go sometimes. Maybe it's not the perfect situation, but he is going to get playing time early. And sometimes that's a better teacher.
Starting point is 00:25:30 He's not like he is sitting behind Brett Farr, or sitting behind Eli Manning. He's, you know, it's Case Keenum, so he might be better off on the field. So there were hints of the Giants were going to take Daniel Jones, Duke quarterback, but TeamSot, New York would get him later in the first round with its second pick at 17 or early in the second round. And nope, they went right after him, six pick. And one AFC South executive told Mike Freeman that pick was inexcusable. Yep. What's even more inexcusable is Dave Gettleman's plan.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Maybe we're going to be the Green Bay model, Kim. where Roger sat for three years. Who knows? We drafted a quarterback that we believe is a franchise quarterback. That's really the end of the long on the shot of it. We feel he's a franchise kid. Maybe. By the way, there's a quote from Gettleman was asked last night about when he fell in love with Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 00:26:29 And he mixed up conferences. He goes, I was watching this kid. He was talking about Haskins at some point. He plays in the Big 12, right? Is Ohio State in the Big 12? There's a really embarrassing quote running around the internet now about Gettleman. He just butchered it. Last year was a quarterback draft.
Starting point is 00:26:47 The NFL handed him that. He said no. This year was a defensive end draft. He had a pick to get it. He said no. And this year he moved up to the first round with every executive I know. And I got five of the best executives on my cell phone. Everybody is saying where you want to be.
Starting point is 00:27:02 in this draft is today the second and the third round. There's about 65 really good football past. In fact, I don't remember a second day with this many good corners offensive linemen and receivers. Most of the good edge rush guys are gone now.
Starting point is 00:27:19 But today's draft is loaded with good football players. And they saw all three instances, they ignored it. I just feel like anytime your plan starts with the maybe, you probably didn't sort everything through. It doesn't feel right.
Starting point is 00:27:33 And three years of sitting behind Eli Manning in the state that Eli Manning is in right now. Yikes. Good luck, Giants fans. Finally, it looks like Jeannie Bus is keeping it in the family. As the Lakers conduct their coaching, search, Kurt Rambis, who's senior at basketball advisor, and his wife Linda Rambis, who's an executive director of special projects, are very involved. According to Bill Orham of the athletic, the Lakers are sending a big contingent to Philadelphia today. That was yesterday.
Starting point is 00:28:00 for Monty Williams' second interview. Sources tell Sam Amick and me. Rob Polinkin, Jeannie Bus, leading a group that also includes Joey Bus, Jesse Bus, Kurt and Linda Rambus, and C.O. Tim Harris. There's also a story that they want to make Kurt Rambus the associate head coach, which is interesting because they don't have a head coach yet. Right. So Bill Plashky of the L.A. Times said that the goal is seemingly to move Rambus to the bench as an associate head coach. But if that doesn't work, he could become the assistant general manager. again, shouldn't that be a decision by the head coach or the general manager? Should you not, you would never hire a football coach and say, listen, here's your offensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Well, what about me choosing it? No, no, no, we're going to tell you who you have to use. That's what poorly run teams do. That's what I keep saying. God. They say from the top to the bottom, right? Like everything at the top determines what happens at the bottom. I think you need to flip the model.
Starting point is 00:28:57 Like the foundation is the top. The ownership, the executives, the front office, that is the foundation of your organization. That needs to be solid and in place and have a clear direction. And then you go from there. The head coach is not going to have more say than the general manager of the president, right? So why would you hire one before the other? It's just none of the pyramid of what they're doing makes sense. None.
Starting point is 00:29:22 So odd. So basically they're, and I like Kurt. I know Kurt. I know Linda. They're basically forcing you as a coach to hire him. or forcing you as a GM for him to be your two. I just don't get it. There's also just a lot of people in the room.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Who's like, where's the direct advice and direction coming from? Joy with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. By the way, I just, people forget, not every team goes into this draft with the same mission. Take the L.A. Chargers.
Starting point is 00:29:58 They're loaded. They have very few needs. So the LA Chargers have two great edge rushers. What they don't have is an interior rush. So they didn't have any interest getting a bunch of picks. They need one or two guys to fill their one or two needs because their rosters loaded. So Jerry Tilleri of Notre Dame is exactly what they want and they got him. Same with Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Philadelphia is loaded. They have very, there's a very good team like the Chargers. They've had more postseason success. but like the Chargers, very few specific needs and very few guys that can actually start for them in this draft. So they move up and get an offensive line. And I love Andre Dillard because their offensive line is getting old. So the Chargers stayed in the first round because they had a specific need on a loaded roster. Philadelphia moved up because they have a specific need on an incredibly deep roster.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Meanwhile, the Seahawks and the Colts, though even though they made the playoffs, that's just because Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck are amazing. They're both rebuilding. You don't think the Seahawks and the Colts are rebuilding, right? Because they have good teams and good right. No, they're rebuilding. The Colts have six needs. So they got out of the first because one player's not going to solve their issues.
Starting point is 00:31:13 They need a bunch of them. So the Colts said, let's get two to second and third, and they've got a ton of picks today. Seattle twice in the last week says, we don't have really a specific need. We'll trade out of the first round to anybody that will allow us, and they move picks. So teams have different needs. Seahawks and Colts, although you think they're good, their rosters are pretty average. They just have great quarterbacks. The Colts have Andrew Luck.
Starting point is 00:31:35 The Seahawks have Russell Wilson. So what those teams need is four picks today and get four starters or four really early contributors. Chargers need a guy. Eagles need a guy. So let's take New England. And I know what you're thinking. Colin, you said yesterday, I don't like receivers taken in the first round. I don't generally.
Starting point is 00:31:54 The guys that I do like in the first round, generally are guys that are grownups, adults. Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, that kind of guy, Andre Johnson. A lot of the first round receivers I would have taken in the first round, they're grownups. It's a diva position. You give a lot of money to a diva. It gets ugly. If the guy passes the character test, he's a grown-up. Calvin Johnson's my all-time favorite, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald.
Starting point is 00:32:17 Okay, then I'll do a first-round pick. So they go out in his draft the Patriots and Nikiel Harry from Arizona State, who I watched a ton of because I watch Pac-12 football. My daughter goes to that school. He's a really, really good player. He's not a superstar, but he's a really good player. Now, you're saying, Colin, you don't like first round wide receivers. You probably love this pick.
Starting point is 00:32:33 No, New England probably tried to get out of the first round to get more picks for today. I'll talk to Joel Clad about that, see if he has any information. But it's very clear to see what New England did with this pick. Number one is Bill Belichick trusts his friends. He leans on Urban Meyer, Kirk Ferrence, Nick Sabin, and Herm Edwards. Herm Edwards coaches Arizona State. So this is a pick where Bill called a friend, Edwards and trusted him. Herman, Bill, get along very well.
Starting point is 00:33:00 Secondly is, let's look at the pattern of what New England's done since Gronk retired. Oh, look at their pattern. Demarius Thomas, Austin Safarian Jenkins, and drafted Nikiel Harry. Presence, big physical players. Austin Safarian Jenkins, 6-6. Demarius Thomas is not a vertical weapon. He's a big physical receiver. Nikiel Harry is Anquan Bolden, too.
Starting point is 00:33:24 Big, strong hands. Great after the catch. Once Gronk retired, they needed a physical presence. But Colin, Nikiel Harry's not a burner. There's no separation. You watch Grong the last three years? There's also no separation. Brady's a precision thrower.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Nikiel Harry runs good routes and can catch the ball like Anquan Bolden in crowds. So I don't love generally drafting receivers in the first round. But New England, the Chargers, Philadelphia, good teams generally have very few spots they need filled. And so when those teams move up or stay in the first or go after a specific guy, I'm okay with it. And I think he's a nice, nice fit for what New England does. Brady makes all his receivers better than it would be without Brady.
Starting point is 00:34:18 So he'll be, he was a dominant Pac-12 player, which is not a very good conference anymore. So he's not going up against great players, but he is a great talent. good teams enter the draft differently than rebuilding teams. And I'll say it again. Chargers, Philadelphia, New England, not a lot of spots to start. They got one or two major weaknesses. New England needs a big physical receiver. Philadelphia needs a great young offensive lineman and a receiver.
Starting point is 00:34:47 They'll draft one today. And the Colts need a bunch of players on the defensive side. Joel Clatt is coming up next. Joel Clats right around the corner. Starting point is 00:37:59 On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. From the WMBA standout, Kate Martin, and rising hockey star, Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't

The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything.
Starting point is 00:38:46 I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts for wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I Heart Women's Sports. All right, welcome back. Joel Klatt's going to be working the NFL network main desk tonight with my buddy Daniel
Starting point is 00:39:08 Jeremiah and others. Let's go live via the Coward Global Satellite, too. My buddy, Joel Clack, college football voice on Fox, works the draft for us. All right, let's start with Daniel Jones. I'm not bothered by the Manning connection because I do think people in this league they lean on friends and smart people. I just don't think he's a top six player. What did you make of it?
Starting point is 00:39:29 Yeah, I totally agree with you. This is where we're going to be 100% in lockstep. And really, it's not just the Daniel Jones pick, but it's also Dexter Lawrence. It's also even trading back up to get the corner from Georgia. I thought in every one of those selections, Dave Gettleman overvalued the pick that he was going to make. They could have gotten Daniel Jones at 17. They could have gotten Dexter Lawrence at 37, and they would have gotten a great corner, regardless of where they were drafted after that because this is such a deep corner draft
Starting point is 00:39:58 and there's no consensus about where those corners are ranked. But specifically on Daniel Jones, here's my issue with it, is that Daniel Jones, when he faced top defenses in college, he was the lowest rated quarterback of my top eight quarterbacks available in this draft. He was only 59%. He barely threw for 230 yards in those games, five touchdowns, three interceptions facing top 25 yards per play defenses. Meanwhile, the guy that they passed on, Dwayne Haskins,
Starting point is 00:40:27 Colin, all he did was throw for 62% in those games, five of them against top 25 defenses, almost 300 yards per game, 15 touchdowns and one interception. It was the wrong pick. I don't know what the Giants are doing. They had a disastrous first round. Dwayne Haskins, though, it concerns me. Let's talk about that in Washington.
Starting point is 00:40:49 So you have a coaching staff on the ropes. They won't be patient. the early schedule is brutal. They have no wide receivers and an old running back. So this is not a team that's going to put up points. He's a local kid. The media will want to see him play. The fans will.
Starting point is 00:41:01 I think Dwayne's going to be rushed into activity. And I don't think he's ready. Your thoughts? Yeah, listen, all those things are true. However, there are some more fits than maybe you're seeing. First of all, I think that the system fits what Dwayne does best, which is he's a mechanic when it comes to that short passing game. That's what we saw Ohio State in particular use against Michigan.
Starting point is 00:41:25 Then you've got some coaching connections. And I don't know if you've talked about this at all or heard this, but Kevin O'Connell, the quarterback coach for the Washington Redskins, was a special offensive assistant in 2016 for the San Francisco 49ers under Chip Kelly and quarterback coach Ryan Day. So he's got a lot of connections there. There's going to be a lot of synergies.
Starting point is 00:41:44 I think that the system is going to be very similar to what he used at Ohio State. And because of that, I think he's going to be ready a lot sooner than he would have been if he went somewhere else. So I agree. He might be forced on the field too soon, but this might be one of the rare places in the league where he's actually going to be ready for that versus another spot. Kyler Murray and Rosen, I said to start the show, I'm not going to bag on them forgetting Kyler Murray. I get it. Cliff Kingsbury feels comfortable. He's your future. I'm not going to criticize it. I do think he's a dynamic player,
Starting point is 00:42:12 a little small for me, but I'm good. My bigger issue is when you got a Josh Rosen and don't tell me you just made your mind up an hour before the draft, get him out of the building. This is a mess now. What happened? What's happening with that? I totally agree. For whatever reason, first of all, I thought he should have been moved before the pick was made. I thought that's when they would have gotten the most value for Josh Rosen. First of all, look at his contract. I mean, they already paid him the bonus. So you're basically trading around a first round draft talent for $6 million over three years. It's an incredible bargain from a financial standpoint for his next team. But as soon as they made the pick, they thought the market would materialize after that.
Starting point is 00:42:54 It never did. They've been waiting for the first round offer. It has not come. They started late, Colin, after pick about 20, 21 started coming off the board. They started saying, okay, two and change. Give us two and a kicker, a third rounder next year. It hasn't come yet. So now they're sitting there and they're basically down to one trade partner. And that's the Miami Dolphins. And they're begging them for a little extra than a second round pick, and Miami is holding all the cards saying, we want him, but we know we don't have to give up the cupboard to get him. Wow.
Starting point is 00:43:25 Miami didn't have leverage much in this league. There you go for Miami. Good for Miami. So I'm not a big believer in first round wide receivers. There have been exceptions. I thought Calvin Johnson, I would have picked number one, Andre Johnson. Generally, if a kid, it's a diva position.
Starting point is 00:43:41 If a kid shows me as mature, Calvin and Larry are like, could be the logo of the league. then I'm all in. But when the Patriots take a wide receiver, my audience is like, oh, Cowhery, in your face, you hate receivers. And my takeaway is when Gronk left, New England needed a physical presence.
Starting point is 00:43:59 And that's what Nekeel, Harry is. He's a Anquan Bolden. So I don't love receivers in the first round. What did you make of the pick? Okay, so think about what Gronk really was as a pass-catching target. I know he worked the seam really well as a tied-in and certainly that catch in the Super Bowl was evidence of that. But what was he really on third down?
Starting point is 00:44:21 He was a one-on-one threat outside the numbers. And Tom Brady would utilize that as kind of that back shoulder, third downs, red zone type of target. That's exactly the type of target that Nikiel Harry is. That's where he excels. One-on-one, back-shoulder, contested catches outside the numbers and in the red zone. and that's what I think they're trying to replace in part with Grunkowski. A little more to this, though, Colin. I don't think they valued him necessarily as a first rounder.
Starting point is 00:44:50 They were trying really hard to move out of that slot, that 30-second slot, and move back into the draft. But here's the problem. They have five picks today already. They have 12 in this draft that's the most of any team in the National Football League. And guess what? No trade partners materialized because everybody in the league is sitting there saying, well, they're just going to draft really good players and beat us with them.
Starting point is 00:45:12 would we give them more ammunition by loading the New England Patriots up with picks? So the reason they couldn't move out is because everyone sat there and thought, we're not going to give you guys extra ammunition. So no, you've got to take the pick at 32. And because of that, they went with the guy that was best suited for them. They've got a good roster. They're going to compete late into the playoffs. What do they need?
Starting point is 00:45:34 Third down help now and red zone help. Guess what they got? A wide receiver that could do those two things. By the way, Steelers moved up to get Devin Bush. And I thought what they were saying was with Cleveland's running backs, with the Baltimore Ravens running attack, I thought Pittsburgh drafted for their rivals. They said, listen, we got Dupree. We got T.J. Watt.
Starting point is 00:45:55 We better have linebackers for the next four years with Lamar and Mark Ingram and Baker and Nick Chubb. So I didn't mind what the Steelers did. I think they kind of drafted to face their rivals. What did you make of it? Couldn't agree more. And the entire process leading up as soon. soon as about noon yesterday hit here Central Time, you started hearing and we started hearing that Pittsburgh wanted one of the two linebackers, Devin White from LSU or Devin Bush from Michigan,
Starting point is 00:46:23 and it didn't matter which one. To your point, they were playing and building for their division. I agree, a thousand percent. They saw an opportunity at 10 with Denver. Now, a little inside on Denver, Vic Fangio was not sold on Devin Bush. The brass was. Fanjo wasn't. So they decided, well, you know what, we've got more holes to fill. Why don't we move back? We'll trade with Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was happy to jump up there and get one of the two guys that they targeted the entire day. So now Devin Bush is a Pittsburgh Steeler. And quite candidly, I thought that was one of the best fits of the entire first round, not only because of what you said, but just mentality-wise, he's going to fit great in a Steelers uniform. Good stuff. Joel Clatt, work in the NFL Network
Starting point is 00:47:06 desk tonight with Daniel Jeremiah, Rich Eisen, Charles Davis. Good stuff, buddy. Rounds two and three are packed all sorts of good players. Thanks, Joel. You bet. Thanks, bud. By the way, Denver did move back. Let me just feed off that what he said. So Denver moved back
Starting point is 00:47:24 because they had a disagreement in the building. And that happens a lot. You have disagreements in the building. But I'll tell you something. Denver ended up getting a kid that most of you have not seen play. So people ask me all the time, who's the sleeper in the first round. The sleeper, Denver got the sleeper.
Starting point is 00:47:44 So his name is Noah Fant. And for some reason, maybe he didn't get along with the coaches there. Maybe it's because Iowa doesn't throw the ball that much. Maybe it's because the other tight end at Iowa, T.J. Hawkinson is one of the best tight end prospects in years. But Noah Fant is the sleeper in this draft. He is a thin, fast, fluid, vertical wide receiver. and to get him at a 20th pick, in the way the world works today,
Starting point is 00:48:11 he is unguardable. He is way too fast for linebackers and way too tall for corners. So, you know, people ask me, who's a sleeper? Well, none of them are classic sleepers because we've all heard them play. And I did think the Giants among them,
Starting point is 00:48:25 some teams reached. I thought the Raiders reached for one of their picks, maybe two. But Noah Fant, Denver, tight end, you did not see a lot of him play. He was the second best tight end on his own team and Iowa's 8. power running two
Starting point is 00:48:39 tight end football team. And they just didn't throw to him. I think he had like 38 or 39 catches. You were big on him yesterday. I am huge on him. When you're the second best player at your position on a team, people just don't overlook you. And Iowa was a power running football program.
Starting point is 00:48:56 So you just don't, he's a classic example of you just didn't see him play a lot in college. He may have out of dispute with a coach. They just didn't throw to him much. He is really good and he is going to up. He's going to be a 50 catch guy or a 60 catch guy as a rookie, and he's going to be down the field. He is a total, like a Jimmy Graham, a vertical tight end that is a matchup the late Aaron Hernandez, New England, a matchup nightmare. A matchup nightmare. I really like him.
Starting point is 00:49:24 Kind of hoping he went to New England. What did I say? Excuse me? Barely slipped out. Okay. Next hour, Charles Davis. I want to talk about the Raiders draft. I want to talk about my Indianapolis Colts. Your Indianapolis Colts. Well, that's Small J journalism today. Hey, it's not, I'm human. You know, journalists have a right to be human.

Starting point is 00:55:40 And I'm like, well, trains would hurt your car sales because people would take a train instead of a car. That's not good for your car business. And then they pulled out of the train business. And I'm like, it kind of feel like they're making stuff up. I'm going to sell my love in Tesla. I like plans. So a lot of people bash the Raiders for getting Cleland. Farrell, number four.
Starting point is 00:56:04 He was seen as like a lower first round pick. I think it's a bit of a reach. He doesn't feel dynamic enough. He was very productive at Clemson, but the reality with Clemson is there's so many NFL guys around him. I mean, the first round felt like a Bama Clemson first round that you can't double team this kid. I mean, he's playing, he's got NFL guys all around him,
Starting point is 00:56:22 and so it obviously makes it easier for him. Aaron Donald at Pittsburgh got double teamed on every play. You can't double this kid. But he's highly, highly good character. So the Raiders at least showed me a plan. Character. Josh Jacobs, running back Bama, character kid. Mississippi State Safety, Jonathan Abrams.
Starting point is 00:56:42 Good kid, plays hard. They're all tough guys. They're character guys. That is a plan. Atlanta did that last night in the first round. Atlanta went out and got a guard from Boston College and a tackle from Washington, who were not the most athletic offensive linemen, but they are mutters. They are just arm wrestlers.
Starting point is 00:57:01 They're just going to wrestle with you. They're tough dudes. So Atlanta's telling you, we are too finesse. We got to get physical up front. I like what Atlanta did. They had a plan. That's all I'm looking for. Head in a direction.
Starting point is 00:57:15 Tell me your management's all on the same page. I can't tell what the Giants are doing. I never know what the Washington Redskins are doing. Tampa, Jacksonville. The teams I struggle with, they're all split. The Raiders are basically, we're into character guys. We're into tough guys. And I like the fact they drafted people who'd played at big programs.
Starting point is 00:57:34 Clemson, Bama, Mississippi State. They went south. I'm a big believer in the SEC. When all else fails, go draft players at Clemson or the SEC. That's always good for me. So I'm not going to at all get on the Raiders for this. We just have to wait and see. We just have to wait and see how it works out.
Starting point is 00:57:54 But Daniel Jeremiah, one of the scouts I absolutely trust, was on my show yesterday. He was one of the few people that didn't bag on Cleland. Farrell, the Clemson Kid. He had the highest character of anybody that I spoke to in this year's draft. And Mike Mayock made the comment in his first press conference. We need foundational players. This is a foundational type player. Yeah, again, the Clemson's so loaded that when you're surrounded with just great players.
Starting point is 00:58:21 You know, it's the, but that doesn't mean you can't work. I mean, Baker Mayfield was surrounded by NFL receivers at Oklahoma, NFL tight ends and NFL offensive linemen. and he's been fine. That does not mean it can't work. It's just harder to evaluate you. You know, it's like if you worked at Google, how do I know you're great?
Starting point is 00:58:41 And that it's not the engineer above you and the marketing next to you. I don't know. But if you're at a small company and like you're the superstar, it's very easy to watch Walter Payton in college or Jerry Rice at Mississippi Valley State and go, okay, he's a, he's not getting doubled on every play and nobody can guard him. That Randy Moss,
Starting point is 00:59:00 playing at Marshall. When you knew he was Marshall's best player by a mile, everybody was over the top on Randy, everybody doubled him, everybody slid a linebacker or coverage over, and they still couldn't stop him. Like, that's like, okay, that's an easy one. When you play at Alabama, sometimes it's like,
Starting point is 00:59:13 well, you've got an All-American to your left, all-American to your right, all-American running back, all-American tight end. But I'm not going to bang on the Raiders. They showed me a direction. All right, my Indianapolis Colts, I am still a journalist,
Starting point is 00:59:27 respected as a journalist, sometimes a small J journalist, But the Colts did something that I really admired because the Colts can fool people because the Colts made the playoffs. And so therefore, everybody says, well, the Colts are in now mode. No, the Colts are rebuilding. The Colts are rebuilding. They just happen to have Andrew Luck. And so Andrew Luck carries them to the playoffs in a so-so division.
Starting point is 00:59:51 Same with Russell Wilson. Seattle's rebuilding. They moved out of the first round as much as they could because they need picks. They're rebuilding. But Russell Wilson makes you think Seattle is in now mode. No, the Colts in Seattle are in, let's get a bunch of picks and a bunch of new players because we're paying our quarterback a lot and we're really actually rebuilding. L.A. Chargers aren't rebuilding. Rams aren't rebuilding. Eagles aren't rebuilding.
Starting point is 01:00:11 Patriots aren't rebuilding. Stealers aren't rebuilding. They can move up for the draft. They can go stay in their lane. But it's funny because the Colts moved to today. And all the executives I talk to, New England tried to get out of the first round to today. I was told by Joel Clatt 10 minutes ago. today is the second and third round. There's a ton of players. So I'm going to play a game with my Colts. I think the Colts have a lot of needs. I think they need two corners.
Starting point is 01:00:35 I think they need a pass rusher. I think they need a receiver. I think they can get another offensive lineman. I think they need a defense, an edge rusher, a bunch of stuff. So they have three picks in the second round today. And Joy, I am just going to guess who they pick. Okay. I think I'm going to get this right.
Starting point is 01:00:56 Did you do some mock drafts of this? It's a little bit educated. So nobody does a mock draft today. I'm doing a mock draft today. Right. So the Colts have the second pick today. Okay. So this one, they're going to draft one of two players.
Starting point is 01:01:08 They're either going to take, they need a corner. Now, I think, and their fan base disagrees with me, I think the Colts need two corners. And there's two I love. Greedy Williams at LSU or Byron Murphy at Washington. I'm going to predict they take one of these two. Which way do I lean? I always lean SEC players over Pac-12. players. That's just the way I'm going to do it. They face in the PAC 12. You may face one or two
Starting point is 01:01:31 NFL wide receivers. In the SEC, you're going to face eight or nine. But these are both. So my first pick's going to be greedy Williams, corner at LSU. That's probably where I'd go, or Byron Murphy with that first pick. Okay, so let's go to their second pick. That's about 12 picks later. That's the second pick in the second round. I'm going to go with Michigan defensive end, Chase Winovich. I think the kid is one of the last really, really good. pass rushers and that's what he does. They drafted a pass rusher last year. The Colts also went out and got Justin Houston from Kansas City this offseason.
Starting point is 01:02:05 But Justin's older. He's a good locker room guy. They want to get another young edge rusher who can watch, monitor, and learn from Justin Houston. So I'm going to go Chase Winnevich with their 46 pick. And then they have a pick at the end of today's round and I believe they need another receiver. They don't need a deep threat because they have T.Y. Hilton.
Starting point is 01:02:26 they need is a steady, good hand, good route guy, and I'm going to predict they're going to get Riley Ridley, the Georgia wide receiver with a 59th pick. He's not a burner. He's tough. He runs great hands. He's really dependable, and that's what Andrew Luck likes. So my picks are Corner, Chase Winovich, wide receiver. I'm very excited about Mike Colts. Very excited. By the way, there has never in the history of cable television been a bigger nerd than I was right there. That was, that was nerdy, yes. I just did an Indianapolis Colts second round mock draft. Yeah, we all experienced it together.
Starting point is 01:03:07 What a nerd. I am a humongous nerd. By the way, Malcolm Gladwell, remember when he came on the show? Look at the analytics. The draft is mostly about today. Remember this? salary cap environment. The issue is not whether a first round player is better than a second round player.
Starting point is 01:03:28 The issue is, is he better for the money than a second round player? And the evidence is really overwhelming that second and third round players are massively undervalued. So you should always trade down. I agree. That's why I was surprised that Arizona Cardinals didn't follow that model. All right. Charles Davis is going to be joining us. He is working the draft as well. One of the all-time great guys in our business, NFL on Fox.
Starting point is 01:03:52 NFL. He does college and pro. He knows both very, very well. He'll be joining us next. Go to MDrive for Men.com today, Refind Your Prime with MDrive. Well, Charles Davis is going to be on the main desk tonight for the NFL Network with Daniel Jeremiah, my buddy, Joel Clatrich Eisen, and let's bring him on via the Coward Global Satellite Network. NFL on Fox for a lot of years. one of the good guys in our business. You watch a lot of college football.
Starting point is 01:08:52 You watch a lot of NFL. You're one of those guys that does both, so you're a perfect component to put, a perfect person to put during the draft. Because I love college and pro. A lot of people pick their sports. I love them, both Charles, and I know you do. You made an interesting point last night.
Starting point is 01:09:06 I just said five minutes ago, I'm not going to judge the Raiders draft harshly because I did see a plan. They took character guys and they took tough guys. You made a specific point about Josh Jacobs, the running back at Bama, which is interesting, Charles, because he didn't get a ton of carries like every other Alabama running back. He wasn't a big star like Mark Ingram. Tell me why you love that pick by the Raiders.
Starting point is 01:09:30 Well, I start with what you say about the Raiders in their plan, and you're right, character guys, tough guys. I had said before the draft, they needed to draft guys who have a presence about them, who bring an attitude with them, especially on the defensive side of the ball where they have to rebuild. But what I love about Josh Jacobs, part of what you said, not the traditional Alabama back, where the odometer has turned over a number of times and there's a lot of tread taking off the tire. What he missed and lacked at Bama
Starting point is 01:10:00 when he wanted all those carries and didn't get them are now being saved up for the NFL. And believe me, John Gruden will use those carries that he didn't take at Alabama. Look back at the history of John utilizing running backs. Remember Cadillac Williams when he first broke into the league? It felt like he had 40 carries every game right out of the gate, had a big year's rookie year before getting hurt
Starting point is 01:10:21 and not being the same guy. But the big deal to me is Charlie Garner. Remember how he was utilized by John Gruden? Multi-purpose guy could take every carry you wanted both inside and to the perimeter, get him out into the past game in open space, and John loves to utilize the running back. And remember, even when they won it all in Tampa Bay,
Starting point is 01:10:41 they didn't have a runner that you would flat out remember, but they did run the heck out of the football. Pound the Rock was the mantra. Josh Jacobs, Fitzpatts, perfectly with what John Gruden wants to do. Daniel Jones, I think best case scenario, feels like Matt Ryan, who much like Daniel Jones, not highly recruited, went to the ACC, didn't have a lot of NFL guys around him, and Matt Ryan had a completion percentage in the 50s like Daniel Jones.
Starting point is 01:11:07 That's the best comp. But I think Matt Ryan works in the NFL because he plays in a dome. He is outdoors. He's a 500 quarterback. Cold weather, he's sub-500. But in the dome, he's a 60% winner. Daniel Jones at MetLife Stadium in that wind late in the season would worry me. I don't love the pick.
Starting point is 01:11:24 What did you make of it? I was surprised not because they took the quarterback. I'd been urging them to take a quarterback at six, but I'd been urging Dwayne Haskins because he was higher on my board. Daniel Jones, I liked coming out of college, but not nearly that high. But here's the thing about all of it, Colin, and you've seen it enough times now. teams have gotten to the point where conviction will be the deal for them. And I know that everyone's saying, hey, Dave Gettleman, you said you were going to stay to your board and take your highest rated player.
Starting point is 01:11:56 Quarterback always trumps that. And so what they decided was we can't wait until 17 to get the guy we like because Daniel Jones was obviously the target because they could have taken DeWain Haskins. He went 15 to Washington. They took Daniel Jones at 6 in order to make sure they got their guy, similar to Ryan Pace going from three to two when he probably could have stayed at three and got Mitchell Trubisky, but didn't want anyone just in case to jump him made the move. Now, for me with Daniel Jones, very similar to Eli Manning in style and demeanor. So a lot of that goes into play too.
Starting point is 01:12:32 They like what they've got with Eli and how he handles New York. They think Daniel Jones can do the exact same thing. But I do, look, we all, I think we're a little bit surprised to see Daniel Jones's name come off at six. but now that pick, Colin, that pick is the pick that will either validate Saquan Barkley from last year or people will still be asking why didn't you take a quarterback when you could have last year in taking Berkeley? Because Barkley's sensational, as we know, but without a cue, will we actually be wasted Saquan Berkeley? This is Daniel Jones's job to win probably starting in 2020.
Starting point is 01:13:08 It's what's really interesting. I was talking about the Packers earlier. So the Packers in their top picks, two years ago in the draft, their top four picks, their top three last year, and their top two this year, nine straight defensive players. They also went out in free agency and got four players, three outside of Billy Turner, three are defensive players. It feels like what they're saying is, listen, they figured out two years ago, we're going to have to pay Aaron a fortune. We got to go get them a cheap defense because we can't pay a ton of players. I've never seen a team go all in on one side of the ball for two, two and a half years like Green Bay. Here's my concern.
Starting point is 01:13:50 Are they going to be too young on defense? Boy, great question, but I don't think so. And here's why, Colin. I think for defenders, being able to play early and do a lot of things doesn't cost you as much as it does with offensive guys being young and making mistakes. Yes, you can make a mistake and give up the big play. We know that. But there are other people around that surround things. And a lot of times those young enthusiastic guys will actually run into better plays,
Starting point is 01:14:19 even though the assignment was wrong. And sometimes it takes a really special player. And you hear that all the time. I remember hearing Tommy Tuberville tell me about Ray Lewis, his freshman year at Miami. He gets his first start. And at the end of his grading sheet, Ray grades into 30%. And then he realizes he had 19 tackles.
Starting point is 01:14:39 So we can fix the technology. stuff. We can fix all of that stuff as long as these kids play with their hair on fire and go play. The problem for Green Bay is that for a lot of those draft picks, as you noted, they haven't all hit. They had to get some help for Kenny Clark on the defensive front. They did that with Sean Gary. They have to fix their secondary, secondary continued to do that. Darnell Savage wasn't a name people talked about, but when you watch them on tape, this guy flies around and smacks people and makes plays on the football. They need plenty of that. Now, I think, is a draft. goes on, look for the offensive line to get some help for Aaron Rogers, and maybe receiver
Starting point is 01:15:17 tight end in order to give him a few more weapons because they've got to get this done for him. He is 35. Finally, Charles, was there a favorite player for you? You know, you can pick apart all these guys. I mean, Quinn and Williams is, I thought, as good a player as the draft had, and people say that he's not an overpowering physical presence. You can double team him out of plays. He doesn't have that Aaron Donald's upper body strength.
Starting point is 01:15:41 I mean, you can nitpick all these guys. Quinnon Williams was a guy I liked. Was there somebody for you that you, I don't like to say can't miss, but he checks all the boxes for Charles Davis. Hey, did you take a look at Quinn and Williams last night and ask yourself, is he even eligible to drive a car yet with that baby face? He is going to, he's going to grow up and grow into being a man, and he's going to wake up one day and realize he is.
Starting point is 01:16:07 And I think for those who say you can double team him out of stuff, I see you've got to turn on the tape. He beat a lot of double teams last year, made a lot of plays. He's only going to get better. But the one for me was Josh Allen fell to seven to Jacksonville. And this is a kid who played very well at Kentucky for three years. A very solid, good player, probably could have come out in the draft last year and probably been a second round pick, went back to school, worked on his game, Colin, and really
Starting point is 01:16:32 exploded last year. I think that with a great pass rush coach, more moves in his arsenal, this kid's going be really special and he's got Janik and Gokwe on one side, Callais Campbell inside to help him out. I think he's a heck of a pick. Jacksonville wasn't going in that direction until this kid fell to seven. I think that's one of my favorite picks of the night. Yep, yeah, and he's supposed to be a great kid, and I think that stuff matters.
Starting point is 01:16:55 One of the things I love about the draft is you really change kids lives. I mean, generationally, you change their lives. Josh Allen's supposed to be just a wonderful kid, great story. Charles Davils will be on the main desk for the NFL Network tonight. Charles, thank you so much. Nashville's a fun town. Don't work too hard. Thanks, man. Hey, thanks a lot for having me, Colin. You take care of yourself. All right, good stuff. So, yeah, I was showing my wife last night. She came home after dinner, and the draft was almost done. And I went and I showed her a couple of those videos on my phone,
Starting point is 01:17:25 on my flip phone. And I said, watch these guys cry when they get drafted. And you can hear the coach call the kid. And it's just like, oh, I can watch that stuff. Yeah, the drafts a, it's a, it's a special moment. Like, I'll never forget Jason's. Well, yeah, your brother's a Hall of Famer. You remember, where were you at? Well, we were in Pittsburgh at our, at our home in Pittsburgh. I was 10. He went in the third round. So you were on the couch? We had a bunch of people over the house and he was just in a panic the entire time. Really? Just checking the phone lines, making sure that was still plugged in. Who called him? Jimmy Johnson? Yeah. And I remember when he got the call, he had to go outside because
Starting point is 01:17:59 once the call comes through, everyone just starts screaming. So you can't even hear. Like, you see everyone in all of these videos, like telling everyone to calm down so he can actually hear what's going on. So he went out into like the middle of the street so that he could hear him. And yeah, I mean, it's just. Was he crying? Um, I don't remember if he cried actually. I'm sure he did. He's a big cryer. But it was a, I mean, it's a moment you don't forget. Like it's an, it's an experience. Joy Taylor with the news. No. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the Hurdline News. His Grinders Hall of Fame speech. You know that much.
Starting point is 01:18:35 So Dabo Swinney led the Clemson Tigers, so their second national championship in three years last season. And now he is being rewarded with a contract that makes him the highest paid college football coach. Clemson and Swinney agreed to a 10-year contract extension worth $93 million. Yeah. And pay him an average of $9.3 million per year. Yeah. There's a lot of much. A big stadium.
Starting point is 01:18:57 That's a lot of money. That's a lot of years and a lot of money. That goes a lot. Nine million a year in Spartansburg. I bet buys you a wonderful house. What do you bet? I think that's pretty safe. That's a safe bet.
Starting point is 01:19:11 His contract also includes some hilariously specific buyout language. Could Dabo decide to leave for Alabama? So Brett McMurphy tweeted this. Dabo Swinney's buyout increases if he leaves for Alabama from $4 million to $6 million through 2020. And then it goes on and on. It basically is a 50% increase every year. Why would you want to leave Clemson? I don't know, but apparently Clemson is...
Starting point is 01:19:34 He played at Alabama. So I'm guessing that's the fear that he would want to go back to where he played. Yeah, but I would never leave Clemson. Alabama's pressure. Shaging things have happened, but clearly Clemson is not playing when it comes to the buyout. He's already get any ideas. Overall, it's bigger than Nick Sabin's eight years, $74 million deal through 2025, and the 10 years, 75 million.
Starting point is 01:19:55 The Jimbo Fisher signed with Texas A&M after the 2017 season. Can you imagine going to buy a house with a mortgage, banker in Spartansburg and he's like under income what do you make a year and you just say you know it goes like 100 200 or plus and you just put a big plus that I mean look it's expected that he was going to get a massive contract and he's earned it and if don't get into the money side of like you know the kids not getting paid we know that coaches get paid it's it's the structure of it so the Arizona Cardinals to cover Tyler Murray first overall last night, if you hadn't heard. But that wasn't shocking. It's shocking that they did it without dealing Josh Rosen, which leaves them with two unproven quarterbacks on rookie contracts that they drafted in back-to-back years. I believe this is the first time that's happened, too, that a team has drafted quarterbacks in top 10 in back-to-back years.
Starting point is 01:20:49 With Stephen Strangers, according to Robert Klemko, the Cardinals only began to legitimately shop Rosen minutes before the 8 p.m. Eastern start time. They were dead set on wanting a first round pick. You know, I got nothing against that reporter, but that doesn't even sound right. Am I supposed to believe Arizona never? I'm sure they had talks, but the talks may have died down leading up closer to the draft, and then they decided to try again the night of. That doesn't, just come on.
Starting point is 01:21:18 I don't understand why you would go into a season. I'm with you. They just lost all their leverage. None. Why would you go into a season with two unproven quarterbacks? If Josh Rosen was a 10-year veteran who you weren't quite sure if you were going to move off of or an eight-year veteran or just anything. He is a second-year player. He's a top-10 draft pick last year.
Starting point is 01:21:42 So you legitimately have a quarterback battle. You're going to keep both of them? What happens when three games into the season when Kyler Murray is if Kyler Murray is a disaster? Then what? We've seen this so many times. The most popular guy on the field is the backup quarterback. especially if he's unproven. I don't understand it.
Starting point is 01:22:02 It makes no sense to me, and I don't understand why they would not. Maybe this is why it wasn't in the hype video. Well, yeah, I mean, this is pretty clear. It wasn't in the hype video. Finally, the Spurs forced the game seven with the Nuggets. They won 1203 last night. I didn't watch this at all. I didn't see one side.
Starting point is 01:22:19 What happened? Well, they won by a lot. 12103 over the Nuggets, the Marcus Aldridge and DeMarre de Rosin combined for 51 points. Ooh, game seven. And are now faced the winner-go-home. scenario against Denver and DeMarc. DeMarreauze is very aware of what's at stake.
Starting point is 01:22:35 When or go home, simple is that. You know, once you understand the meaning of that going into that game, you understand that every single second on that court matters. You know, you don't want to walk off that court preparing for summer. You know, it brings out a different side of you, you know, and the guys that have been in the game, seven, understand what it's like. So we all got to treat it. like we did the night.
Starting point is 01:23:01 It's interesting because the first round ratings have not been good. I think it's been a great first round. I think we've had even the series like even OKC Portland was five, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Every second. It's been a great first round. I thought Philadelphia, Brooklyn had a little bit of tension. I mean, it's obviously Milwaukee, Detroit.
Starting point is 01:23:18 It's been such a great first round because, you know, you've had some pushback from teams that you didn't think. Like Brooklyn, no one saw Brooklyn coming. You know what I mean? The Clippers. So you've had some really good basketball. Now we have a game seven in round one. Paul Milsap and Isaiah Thomas are the only two on Denver's roster
Starting point is 01:23:35 I've ever played in the game seven. This will be DeMarrazen's fourth game seven. And then you have Popovich who has 284 postseason games as a head coach. So it's really interesting. I'm rooting for the Spurs in game seven tomorrow. I'd like to see Blazers and Spurs. You have a little Lamarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard storyline going on there. And just, you know, Popovich, just being there every single year,
Starting point is 01:23:57 is enough in itself and the Blazers are obviously rolling. So I'm pulling for the Spurs in this, but game seven is tomorrow. Good stuff, Joy, with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurdline News. Occasionally, in my business or football, there is a player so great he can overcome bad coaching and bad management.
Starting point is 01:24:19 Michael Jordan would have succeeded anywhere. Michael Jordan ran through a couple of coaches before he got to Phil Jackson. you know, Magic Johnson ran through a coach before he got the right coach. There are just a handful of quarterbacks. Andrew Luck, even with Bruce Ariens, when 11 and 5, 11 and 5, 11 and 5. John Elway, Peyton Manning was so good.
Starting point is 01:24:42 Peyton Manning would have won, regardless of where he would have landed. He was just too gifted. That is the exception. Even good quarterbacks like Matt Ryan need the right fit or they're not as good. Dwayne Haskins for Ohio State, I think, is a good solid B prospect. I don't think he's transformative.
Starting point is 01:25:02 I don't think he's that elusive. I think his arm is good, not spectacular. And I fear that Washington's a really bad fit. And I think he's going to run through. He'll be on his second coaching staff by year two. Daniel Snyder, it's the convergence of many bad things. You have an impulsive owner. You have a local kid who's going to be pushed into,
Starting point is 01:25:25 duty early. You've got a very good division. You have no wide receiver help and a 34-year-old running back in Peterson. There's just a bunch of stuff converging. Again, in any business, Howard Stern would have worked anywhere. You know, Rush Limbaugh came into the world. He would have worked anywhere. There are people, Paul Harvey in my business. They just, it didn't matter what networked Simon Cowell was on. It was great that he was on Fox. He, He was so dynamic, he would have worked anywhere. But most quarterbacks need help. They need a good owner.
Starting point is 01:26:01 They need a good GM. They need a good offensive line. Andrew Luck is so unbelievably rare. Battle line, defensive coach, impulsive owner, 11, 11, 11 wins. That just doesn't happen. And so I fear Dwayne Haskins' career is going to get roadblocked a little bit. I liked him. I don't love him.
Starting point is 01:26:20 And it bums me out because as Urban Meyer said on our show a week ago, He's not ready yet. He mature enough to be the face of a $5 billion franchise. Not yet. He's close, though. He's only got one year under his belt, and I think the situation will be perfect, and there's a couple of them out there.
Starting point is 01:26:38 He comes in, he learns for a year. At some point, he'll be the face of a franchise. Not ready yet. Well, good luck. Their first five games are brutal or probably be one and four. Case Keenan will get benched. Haskins in in a very tough division, at a very tough job, rookie quarterback in the NFL.

All right, so I hear the Raiders last night, hey, they drafted character guys. And I'm not saying character doesn't matter, but you don't necessarily think that means as much as guys like me say.
Starting point is 01:31:41 At the end of the day, we're trying to win football games. You're right? And I understand the character side of it because I feel like in this day and age, you know, you, especially with social media, you want to have people who are going to do and say the right things and always put your organization in positions to succeed. But also at the same time, we need guys that are going to help us win football games right now. And I feel like no other team needs more winners than the Oakland Raiders do right now. I'm not saying that the guys they drafted aren't winners. And this pains me to say this, but I was shocked that they took a running back in the first round because I felt like the days of seeing running backs, unless it looked like a Seqon.
Starting point is 01:32:19 on Barclay type back. Home run guy. Home run guy. Like, guy is just as obvious as it can get. I thought those days were kind of behind us because now it's defense and ends, offensive linemen, quarterbacks, safety's linebackers. Those are the kind of
Starting point is 01:32:35 positions that it seems like teams are going more towards, right? They passed on Josh Allen. Exactly. And he's also a great character kid. He is a great character. And dominated, there's the thing. I'm a big SEC believer. If I'm going back and forth, I'll just take the SEC guy. Nothing against a Clemson kid.
Starting point is 01:32:54 But Josh Allen was a terror in the SEC. They could not block him. And to me, I thought Josh Allen was the most natural pass rusher. I liked him over Bosa because he could do more than Bosa. He could drop into pass coverage. He could play the run. And also the same time, they could not block this kid. And so I thought he had everything that you would want in a pass rush.
Starting point is 01:33:18 pressure after trying to fill the void of Khalil Mack, right? After you get rid of a guy like Khalil Mack, who is going to be that next person that's going to come in and give you maybe that same kind of production? And I thought Josh Allen was that player. So the Cardinals appear to have lost all their leverage with Josh Rosen because now a understatement. A lot of the teams that needed quarterbacks, Giants and Washington addressed it. And today, the other three that need it will address it.
Starting point is 01:33:46 So it seems to me I'd be on the phone today. what do you make of what Rosen is going through? Did you, I mean, I think Rosen wanted out. Once the rumors, I think he wanted out. Yeah, and understandably, right, because you're going into a situation where it's not your fault. They just, they switched head coaches, and now this head coach is bringing in the offensive system
Starting point is 01:34:06 that doesn't fit Josh Rosen's style of play. And that unfortunately happens a lot in football, especially at the NFL level. I've seen guys' careers get killed quicker because they're in a system that doesn't fit their style. of play than I have for blaming the actual player for maybe not, you know, producing, right? And so I'm sure Josh Rosen is completely frustrated. And he said that before.
Starting point is 01:34:30 He said it was annoying, right? I think he said it was annoying. And so he's obviously he's frustrated. And but to go back to your point of now, they've lost all the leverage to, to trade them, to get value for him. The value was before the draft, right? When they were still mystique as to what the Cardinals were going to do. do. People still were asking questions where
Starting point is 01:34:49 is more smoke and mirrors or are they really going to go with Kyle Kala Murion at first pick? And so that's when you have more leverage with the other teams. And now all that leverage is gone. So it's interesting. Bama is Bama puts out a lot of front seven
Starting point is 01:35:05 defensive guys and a lot of running backs in this league. Josh Jacobs is interesting because unlike other Alabama running backs and they just hand on the ball 30 times a game he doesn't have a lot on the tires. He's a little smaller, but he's tough. So when you watch him, what advice would you give a college running back going to the pros?
Starting point is 01:35:26 What's the biggest difference? I think the biggest difference is the speed of the game. And what that translates to is the mental side of the game, right? Because guys are faster, bigger, stronger, but it's the way that they play their schemes. You're not going to find a ton of teams that don't play their gaps well, right? And that's ultimately what it comes down to is when I got into the NFL, you know, going from college, the holes are like this. It's about as big as this stage. Right.
Starting point is 01:35:55 And when you get to the NFL, those holes are about as big as this table right here. And so you have to be able to hit them when they're open because if you don't, then it can be the difference between a five-yard game or a three-year loss. And that, for me, was the biggest difference because I had always been able to outrun people. I'd always been able to break somebody down and open field one-on-one, but when you have to run between the tackles consistently, that's the toughest part, and that's the biggest adjustment
Starting point is 01:36:23 is the speed of it and the mental side of it and also having patience to be able to live within those three-yard games, live within those two-yard games. Because in college, you got a lot of home-run hits. Well, college, these holes are huge. I mean, Alabama, I'm assuming, you know, and watching a lot of their games,
Starting point is 01:36:38 they have huge holes. You know, their offense-aline is better than much. Most of the teams that they play. Oh, yeah, except maybe Clemson, all of them. Yeah, except Clemson. Right. And so those holes are going to look completely different, you know, when he's, now he's playing with the Raiders.
Starting point is 01:36:53 So Giants draft Daniel Jones. I think most people did not think he was the best quarterback. Let's say, because I don't think he has a great arm. And I just, I think his best comp is Matt Ryan. When you came to the Saints, how long is it before, of course, you had Drew You didn't have to worry about it. But there was backups. Quarterbacks drafted.
Starting point is 01:37:16 How long does it take for players to watch a new player and make a decision on he can't play or he can't? It's training camp. Like the first training camp. You notice it right right away. And that's the one thing is you might be able to fool some of the fans, but you can't fool the players. Because the players can tell you right away if this guy can help us
Starting point is 01:37:37 or if it's like, I don't see it. Like I don't know how we got to this point and I don't know how he's going to be able to help us. And that happens more often than not inside the locker rooms. And that's the biggest part is you have to be able to also convince the locker room that we got the right pick. Because, by the way, he's going to be making a lot of money and not playing. Exactly. And by the way, when you're five and nine, nobody wants that.
Starting point is 01:38:03 Like there's a reason why they got the sixth pick. Even with the greatness of Saquan Barkley, as good as he had, he was the best rookie probably of all. all the rookies in that class, they still ended up with the six pick in the NFL draft because they need a quarterback. And I love Eli Manning, but we can all agree that his best days are behind him. And he's not getting any better, right? And so now you draft a guy at the six pick. You can't have a quarterback sit for three years when you picked them as a six pick in the first draft in the first round.
Starting point is 01:38:35 18 million bucks. He cannot sit. He has to play. And so now what happens is Dwayne Haskins is in your division, and you have to see him twice a year. And if he's good. And we're going to find out really quickly who was the right pick. They passed on Sam Darnold, who now plays in the Giants Stadium,
Starting point is 01:38:52 and they passed on Haskins who they'll play twice a year. So if this kid doesn't hit, you'll be reminded regularly in the papers, talk radio, in your division. Gettlman's career is going to hang on this pick right here. And it's unfortunate because he tried to use the Brett Favre and Aaron Rogers We're talking about Brett Farr. He's arguably one of the greatest to ever play the game. And you can't use that situation because that was completely different.
Starting point is 01:39:16 Every situation does not validate what you're trying to do now. You can use history for that, but at the end of the day, this is completely separate. And you need a quarterback that can play right now, or else you're going to have maybe the second pick next year or maybe the third pick next year after that. Reggie Bush joining us. So Belichick took Nikiel Harry.
Starting point is 01:39:37 I just ended up. watching he was great against USC like two years. What do you make of him? They say he's not a burner. Does speed matter? I mean, you were a burner. The knock on him is he doesn't separate a ton. What do you make of that criticism? Well, they also said
Starting point is 01:39:52 that, you know, look at Antonio Brown. Like he had, you know, a slower 40 time during his combine and you can't touch him in the phone booth, right? And so I trust Belichick's picks. I trust Belichick so much if he was running our country right now and he had to make a decision. You'd vote.
Starting point is 01:40:08 to press the green button, the red button, I trust whatever he does. Because who do we trust more than Belichick? Who is proven more year in and year out that he does not make picks just to make them? He has a reason behind all of his picks. He has a specific plan. He has a specific plan. Have you noticed this? Since Gronk retired, he went and got Jenkins the tight end from the jets, 6-7.
Starting point is 01:40:29 He went and got Demarius Thomas off a surgery, but he's a big physical receiver. And then he goes and gets this kid. He's telling you basically, we lost a physical presence. in our secondary. So we got to go get big strong guys, not burners. And he quickly filled it, right? Like he didn't waste any time. You know, he didn't have to go make big splashes or anything like that.
Starting point is 01:40:51 He's just, he's very methodical with what he does. And he's a football genius, honestly. There's a lot of teams, a lot of coaches that try to pattern what they do after him. I've been on coaches, I've been on teams where we've tried to do a lot of the same things that Belichick did. but at the end of the day, he's one of one, right? And I trust Belichick more than any other coach in football because he's done it. He has the skins on the wall.
Starting point is 01:41:17 You also had Sean Payton, so you've had one of the better coaches too. Trent Dilfer and Cole Tucker, a rookie for the Pittsburgh Pirates who debuted last weekend and jacked it out of the stadium or over the wall in his first game with his parents in the stands. Both Trent and Cole Tucker will be joining us in the final hour of this show on a Friday, Reggie. Thanks so much.

Starting point is 01:42:03 We are going to have a great last hour. tonight. It was so funny last night. Joey Taylor joined me. So my wife just got out of the house last night. She knew I was nerding out with the draft. So she just leaves. And she literally came back the second the draft ended. And she's like, oh, how did the draft go?
Starting point is 01:42:19 Any big surprises? And, you know, I just don't want to get into it with her. Nothing means anything to her. So it's like I just said, no, nothing happened. It was just really boring. Although it was the best draft of my life. Just all interior linemen. I mean, there's no reason for me to get into the minutia with my wife. Because, you know, she doesn't really care.
Starting point is 01:42:35 I just said, oh, nothing, honey. It was just like one of those questions, like how it was work. Yeah, yeah, I was like, nothing happened. It just flew by. It was actually a very quick first rat. It, like moved. It felt fast. I like that.
Starting point is 01:42:45 And then I said, and tomorrow is the really good day. And she went, oh, I thought the draft was one night. I'm like, oh, no, no, honey. It is many nights of fun for me. And she was like, oh, she was really disappointed. She thinks the weekend is done? Well, I mean, she just doesn't understand. understand the greatness of NFL operations.
Starting point is 01:43:08 She doesn't understand. I think most people kind of tap out on the draft excitement in coronas with no coasters and the eagles on the end of the fingers after day one. I tap in. The elevator, you guys are getting off the elevator. Uncle Colin is moving right back in, going to more floors. So we're on Channel 83, Sirius XM. 15 minutes.
Starting point is 01:43:30 Trent Dilford joins us from Nashville. So I can't wait for that. and later and best for last. Cole Tucker, rookie, great kid. My new favorite baseball player. For a long time, it was Bryce Harper. I love this kid. He happens to like the show.
Starting point is 01:43:43 And I like him, and he's going to join us. They're playing the Dodgers. Well, well, well, the NFL draft, as you know, in Nashville. By the way, tip of the captain Nashville. Great job. But this morning, everybody's focused on New York City. I could blast the New York Giants today. They took a quarterback at number six,
Starting point is 01:44:01 who I do not think is good enough to be a quarterback. at number six. And I'm listening driving in today and everybody is saying, well, the only reason they drafted Duke quarterback Daniel Jones is because the Duke coach is friends with Peyton and Eli Manning. And that is true. That is not why I'm going to blast the New York Giants. I don't have a problem listening to Peyton Manning ever. Peyton Manning is smart. If Peyton Manning tells you to do something, Bill Belichick would listen. I mean, every smart coach, Bill Walsh would have listened to Peyton The late Bill Walshiff, if Joe Montana would have talked back then. All great coaches.
Starting point is 01:44:38 Andy Reid would listen to Peyton Manning. Sean Payton would listen to Peyton Manning. The best coaches ever would listen to Peyton Manning. So if Peyton Manning calls and says draft him, I'm not going to beat you up for that. And this kid does play a little bit like Eli Manning. And he's giving you two Super Bowls. So I'm not going to bang on the Manning family for this draft pick. Urban Meyer, Bill Belichick's friend, Nick Sabin, Belichick's friend.
Starting point is 01:45:03 relies on his friends all the time. Friends, you listen to him in life. I'm going to bash the manning for the Daniel Jones pick. Here's what I don't like. And it's not even just specific to this kid who I don't think is a high first round pick, is that life sometimes gives you breaks. Last year, you take a quarterback. You had like four really good prospect. Baltimore didn't even urgently need one they took one. Buffalo moved up. Jets took one. Cleveland took one. Cleveland had taken a bunch of quarterbacks. They're like, we can't pass on this. The NFL gave you a break. The Giants needed a quarterback, and they passed.
Starting point is 01:45:39 This year, the NFL draft gave you a break. They needed an edge rusher, and it was a very rare year where there was a bunch of edge rushers in the top six picks. And take advantage of it again. Tonight's the second and third round. All the smart teams, the Colts, moved their picks to today. The Patriots got picks today. The Seahawks moved out.
Starting point is 01:46:00 Picks today. This is a draft today for all the real smart guys in the league is where you'll want to be. What do the Giants do? Three picks in the first round. What the hell are you doing? You don't want three picks yesterday. The Raiders had it. The Giants had it.
Starting point is 01:46:20 What you want is picks today because this draft had a bunch of good players, very few great players. I mean, Nick Bowes is a great player. Quinnin Williams is a great player. Kyler Murray could be a great player. Josh Allen, Ed Oliver. You're looking at guys who could be, Andre Dillard could be great players. Today, 70 really good players, 80.
Starting point is 01:46:43 So that's my, that's, that's, that, don't blame the Mannings. That's what drives me nuts. Three other issues. Dave Gettleman said when he drafted Daniel Jones, he could sit for years. Really? Who uses a number six pick when you need all sorts of defensive help?
Starting point is 01:46:59 Pick an offensive, got to sit. You're paying him like $25 million. You need guys who can play. You watch Carson Wentz. You watch the Cowboys offensive threats. You may need a pass rusher. I just don't like the idea number one of Dave Gettelman saying, yeah, we've picked a guy at sex.
Starting point is 01:47:15 We'll pay him a bunch, not playing for two years. Okay, good division. I don't like it. Secondly, MetLife Stadium is windy. Philadelphia on the road is windy. Washington, D.C. is cold and windy. You ever seen that Philadelphia Stadium? It's by our river.
Starting point is 01:47:29 Potomac and D.C. Cold, wet, windy, the Hudson, windy, cold, rainy, wet, winter. This guy's got an average arm. His best comp, the guy he most looks like in the NFL is Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan went to a prep school, not highly recruited, went to Boston College, average arm. But Atlanta liked him because he could play indoors eight times a year, indoors in New Orleans, in Carolina and Tampa, warm weather cities. So Matt Ryan wins two out of three games in warm weather.
Starting point is 01:47:57 Indoorse. Dome. You know what his record is outdoors? 500. You know what Matt Ryan's record is? And like bad weather? Under 500. So I don't even like the fit here. And the third thing is Dave Gettelman said several times, the GM of the Giants is, hey, you do not draft for need. You just draft best player available. So you're telling me that Daniel Jones is a sixth best player in the draft? Come on, bro. I'm not bagging on him for the Manning connection. I'm not going to do that because this league is about connections. Andy Reed's
Starting point is 01:48:30 tree and Belichick and, you know, the late Bill Walsh and Parcells and Bill Polians and the steward, Sean Payton and Belichick, and they've all got trees. And you're always talking and trusting a handful of guys. That's okay. The Manning connection doesn't bother me. If Peyton Manning calls Dave Gettleman and said, I've had this kid at my camp two years, I really like him. And he's the kind of kid.
Starting point is 01:48:54 He reminds me a little of Eli, although I do not think he has Eli Manning's arm talent, Eli's first seven, eight years in the league. I thought Eli had a really nice gun, a really nice arm. But, man, life just doesn't give you breaks like this. The draft gave you a huge break last year. You needed a quarterback and there was a bunch of good ones up top. And the draft this year, you needed an defensive end to give you a huge break. There was a bunch of them up top. You didn't take them. And then this year, the values all today. And you don't have many today picks. But you had three. You move up to get into this round. I don't think they know what they're doing. All right, let me shift to this. I want to talk about the Packers.
Starting point is 01:49:29 So I said this over the course of the last couple weeks that Green Bay knew two years ago they were going to pay Aaron Rogers a bunch of money. Seattle kind of got caught off guard with Russell Wilson demanding money and here's the date. But Green Bay knew a couple years ago we got to pay Aaron a ton. And so Green Bay smartly started drafting all sorts of defensive players. Let's get cheap and expensive on the defensive side
Starting point is 01:49:55 because we're going to pay our quarterback $35 million. bucks. So I thought, and it's just crazy. So last night, they even doubled down on it, and I thought they may go finally offense. Nope, they went Roshan, Gary, Michigan, good player, injury concern, but good player, and a great safety at Maryland, Darnel Savage, who's a big hitter. So now think about this. The last nine top draft picks by the Packers, and that includes last year's first three rounds, 2017's first four picks, and last night's top two picks, all defense, nine for nine defense. And in free agency, three of their four signings were defense.
Starting point is 01:50:38 So of their last 13 top acquisitions, 12 are defense. So Aaron Rogers, we got you a new offense. offensive coach, he's a hipster, and we've loaded up your defense. It's all over for excuses. Okay? Because there's been two excuses the last several years. McCarthy's a dope. All right, we got rid of him.
Starting point is 01:51:07 And, you know, defense, Aaron always has to save the team. Those days are over. By the way, there's always been a very weird stat connected to Aaron Rogers despite his talent. How come he has so few fourth quarter comebacks? Ryan Tannahill has more. Aaron Rogers only in his career has 14. Isn't that remarkable? Matt Ryan's got 27. Joe Flacco's got 18. Andy Dalton's got 20.
Starting point is 01:51:32 Ryan Tannehill's got 15. Aaron Rogers has 14. What? Well, well, well, last 11 years. That's all he's got. And the excuse has always been. Well, I mean, the defense screws him over. They don't have any.
Starting point is 01:51:47 That's actually not true. In fact, Green Bay hasn't drafted an offensive player in the first round. since 2011. And oh, by the way, Aaron Rogers is actually the last offensive skill player drafted by Green Bay in the first round. That's always been a fake excuse.
Starting point is 01:52:04 That's always been a phony excuse. The truth is, Aaron Rogers is not a great come from behind quarterback. Matt Ryan's got double to come from behind wins. And he hasn't always had a great defense. Andy Olten has no always had a great defense. Ryan Tannale hasn't always had a great defense. but let's stop the excuses for Aaron now
Starting point is 01:52:24 because the two excuses were, well, yeah, the defense just can't. They have completely absolutely 13 of their last 14 high draft picks or free agents of note except for Billy Turner, the O lineman, have been defense. And I like a lot of their picks. But don't tell me anymore they don't have good defensive players because they are, nobody misses. that much. They've got plenty of good defensive players. And the myth that they've never given Aaron any good defensive players, go look at what they've drafted. They draft defense,
Starting point is 01:53:02 O's first pick. That's what they do. So all the excuses now, the McCarthy, done, that we don't have any defense, done. Now, I like what they did. I'm picking them to win their division, but the excuses are now officially over. I just got a text here. My phone off as I was talking, Josh Rosen deal may be happening very quickly. Oh, Big J journalism? Small J, I don't have a double source. I have a single source. So
Starting point is 01:53:32 Josh Rosen could be getting moved here. Arizona has got to get him before the draft starts. Let's go. Let's hurry up. Well, they're a little late on that. Okay, so it looks like it could happen here pretty quick. Kyler Murray, the right pick for the Cardinals. Trent Dilfer, my buddy, joins us live from Nashville coming up. Be sure to catch live editions
Starting point is 01:53:48 of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. ball talk. What do you know? Just said the dolphins are closing in on a deal for quarterback Josh Rosen. Maybe tentatively done. There you go Joyce. Arizona would get pick number 48 from Miami. I think Josh is
Starting point is 01:54:04 worth a second pick. I'll say this again about Josh Rosen. He's free for three years. Thank you. He is free for three years. And again, I don't beat up on Arizona for going getting Kyler Murray if they think that's the guy. But I also think Josh Rosen has value. So you
Starting point is 01:54:20 can't judge a guy after six games in the NFL. That was a bad old line and staff didn't work. He just got a top 10 quarterback from last year's draft for the 48th pick in this year's job. They paid him all the gate. He's $2 million a year. Yeah. And there's nothing. All right, my buddy, 14, 15 years in the NFL, a Super Bowl champ, a pro bowler. I covered him when he was a young kid. Now he's got facial hair and everything. Trent Delfer via the Coward Global Satellite Network from Nashville, which, by the way, he's the new head football coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville. That's not L.A.
Starting point is 01:54:51 gear. That's Lipscomb Academy. A sharp-looking dude, you got the Bucks. Tampa Bay second round pick tonight. I remember those days. Trent Dilfer running for his dear life in Tampa. So let's talk about Kyler Murray. The world has changed. I have to
Starting point is 01:55:07 see quarterbacks differently today. I didn't love Trubisky, but he can do some things that work. Same with Lamar. I got to see the world differently now. So what do you, Kyler Murray, do you like the move? Yeah, I love the pick. I mean, I love the athlete. I love the competitor.
Starting point is 01:55:26 I've known him since he was 16, probably one of the most unique competitors we've ever had through the Elite 11. I mean, kid never lost a high school football game for a reason. You know, there's a rare combination of Twitch, power, armed talent, all those traits you talk about. But to me, more importantly, it's the fit with this Air Raid head coach in Cliff Kingsbury. I just hired an Air Raid offensive coordinator. So I now kind of know the behind the scenes secret sauce of the air raid. The one thing that it lacks more than anything else is the ability to be creative with their past protections. So they really have a gap in their past protection schemes.
Starting point is 01:56:05 And now Cliff's a smart guy. He's going to learn it over time. And I'm sure he'll hire an offensive line guy that's very adept to NFL past protection schemes. Why is this important? If they're going to be successful early on, you need a quarterback that can create space for himself, a guy that doesn't need the most complex and fundamentally sound past protection schemes. You need to play the game boundary to boundary and create a lot of places for Kyler Murray to move around, extend plays, be very, very creative, a la Russell Wilson or Aaron Rogers in his prime.
Starting point is 01:56:41 Guys that they're not just scrambling, they're creating space and time so things can open up downfield. And then Kyler obviously has the ability to pierce the defense in those situations. I think it's just it's one of those unique perfect fits. You have this unique athlete, this unique player, a new type of coach in the NFL with a scheme that hasn't been seen before. So you need those two things to blend perfectly. And I think in this situation it does. Listen, I tend to be a believer.
Starting point is 01:57:09 I've said this for years. Outside of Andrew Locke and John Elway, I would almost always trade the number one pick if I could. I think the value in these drafts is always second, third, fourth. But there are, if you're going to draft a quarterback high, I want to see something special. Kyler Murray's special talent. Baker had special accuracy, though not my type. Darnold was special athletically. Josh Allen's special size.
Starting point is 01:57:33 Daniel Jones, I don't see the special. He feels very Matt Ryan-esque. Can you make an argument he's the best quarterback? No, you can't make an argument that he has the traits to be picked. he was picked. You can't make the argument that he played to the level that would be deserving of the sixth pick in the draft. I can understand the developmental project. He is a good athlete. He's obviously got good size. He's a great kid. He's a gifted learner. He's very, he does really well with people, so it would be great in the locker room. So I understand the fit part of it,
Starting point is 01:58:15 but I also can understand the critics today saying he's a day two talent. which I would agree with. He doesn't have the juice. And it's the only word I can think about. He just doesn't have the juice. Special guys have something to them that just pops out on tape. You watch tape and you almost can feel them
Starting point is 01:58:37 instead of watching them. I watched all Daniel's stuff and I love how well trained he's been. I think that's maybe where this thing got confusing was people mistake talent for training. He's been trained really well. He has great fundamentals. He gets through progressions.
Starting point is 01:58:55 He has great eye work. You can tell he's very advanced in his training, but nothing jumps out on tape and says, oh, that guy's special. Matt Ryan, even, I know he was criticized when he's coming up on. Matt Ryan, for a big guy, had some Twitch. Matt Ryan, for a big guy, had some power. Like, you could see it long term of why Matt Ryan was going to be successful.
Starting point is 01:59:16 I watched all of Daniel's stuff, and I like the player. Don't get me wrong. I would love to coach him. guy like this because he's going to do it the way you ask him to do it he's going to be great in the locker room he's going to be tough he's competitive he's got a lot of that stuff but it's he's going to be more of a system guy than be a guy that plays beyond the X's and O's um Trent is there a quarterback today that um that again that there's a little juice on the tape who do you like today of the remaining guys drew locks got a lot of juice drew lock's going to be a kid that when he goes into
Starting point is 01:59:50 training camp day one. He's going to look and feel like an NFL quarterback. The players, the receivers, the tight ends, the offensive linemen, those dudes, you're going to be like, oh yeah, this is a guy, this is a dude. Drew Locke was a highly recruited basketball player. Drew Locke's an exceptional athlete. He has a fantastic arm. He's got good movement skills. He's tough. He's a leader. He's smart. Again, been trained well. It was kind of in a crudy situation at Missouri with guys getting banged up, not getting a lot of protection. You know, playing the SEC, get your brains in every week. I got a bad rap for this, but he stood in there.
Starting point is 02:00:27 He took the beating. He didn't look for a way out like a lot of other guys did. He's got all the stuff you're looking for. And I do think he's probably a year or two away. But I think he has way more juice than Daniel Jones. I mean, this is a guy that lines up day one and you're going to, you're just going to watch. I always say this, you can watch the ball and the ball is going to speak. when he throws a football in practice, it's going to say NFL starter.
Starting point is 02:00:49 And I think there's other guys, too, with great value. I'm a Jared Sidham fan. I think this Gardner Minshue, I don't know where he's going to go, but Gardner Minshu is going to win football games in the NFL for somebody. Yeah, we're watching Drew Locke here. He's got the size. Yeah, that boy, that's a big time throw against, looks like Alabama. Yeah, you do make a good point.
Starting point is 02:01:07 Sometimes some of these quarterback get beat up a little in the SEC. So when you looked at the draft, again, I tend to think, I don't think, There's like seven, eight players in the second round. I'm like, man, I love, love them. Murphy, the DB at Washington, a couple old linemen, greedy Williams, LSU, Michigan's got an edge rusher. Was there a player in this draft? I don't like can't miss.
Starting point is 02:01:31 But was there somebody offensively or defensively? You looked at and you just went, man, that dude is going to be day one play produced. Somebody jump off the tape any position. Yeah, I thought Bosa and all three Clemson defensive lineman, those were the guys to me that were can't miss guys. I mean, there's just no way. They all have great character. They all have great work ethic.
Starting point is 02:01:55 They all have the physical traits. There was no extra hyper. And they are what everybody said they are. They're difference makers day one. Their starters day one. They're purple players. They're going to go to Pro Bowls. I mean, they're just big time players.
Starting point is 02:02:09 I think the Bosa 40, Nobody ever wants to talk about the second and third pick how it's a great pick. I mean, talk about a perfect pick for the 49ers with what they already have on the defensive line. And then the ad bosa is, that's a legit pick. And I loved what the Raiders did. I love what the Raiders did because I love that John Gruden and Mayock got Gruden grinders with high ceilings. They're changing a culture, not just a team. And to change a culture, and I'm seeing this at the high school level, I've been part of it,
Starting point is 02:02:39 the college level and part of the pro level, it takes foundational human beings. It takes guys that have like those core values that are going to spread like wildfire to the rest of your team. And he got three of them in the first round. And oh, by the way, they all have really high ceilings as productive players as well. Good stuff. Trent Dilfer, who is by the way making the second pick, second round pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lipscomb Academy. Good luck to you. Trent, we'll talk soon. Thanks, brother. Good being with you.
Starting point is 02:03:10 Yeah, yeah. You know, it's funny about the Niners, because remember the Niners picked up D Ford. So the Niners have a defensive end, and now they get Bosa, and they have Bruckner. So in that division, you got Russell Wilson, Jared Gough, and now Kyler Murray. So the team nobody's talking about San Francisco. So San Francisco's in a division with very smart, either really good quarterbacks or very smart offensive guys. And all of a sudden now, I got Bosa, I got D Ford, I got Brutner, there are not a lot of teams in the NFL that have three pass rushers at that level.
Starting point is 02:03:43 And they have a kid named Solomon Thomas who was underachieved as a high draft pick a couple years ago from Stanford. But it's not a terrible player. He can play. He's just not a dominant player. Yeah. So, I mean, I, Stanford, keep your right. Now, there's two teams in the NFL. I've said every year I go out and I say, I pick two teams that will double their win. And then I give two teams a little pull back. Last year I said Jacksonville, Minnesota going to pull back. I was right on those. And I always give two teams that will double their wins. This year I picked them and we got them right.
Starting point is 02:04:14 Colts were one of those. Jets and the San Francisco 49ers, easiest Vegas bets. They're going to double their wins. The Jets have to get a center and they're pretty good. And the Niners today could get a corner and there's a bunch of them and they're pretty good. Got a good football team. Joy of the News.
Starting point is 02:04:36 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So, Dwayne Haskins is out to prove teams wrong. Washington took the Ohio State quarterback, and he's Maryland native, with the 15th pick last night. And after being the third quarterback taken, Haskins is now on a mission. I'm more motivated now than ever.
Starting point is 02:04:58 It's a bigger tip on my shoulder. Lee done messed up. And I'm blessed by God. Left with my family, I'm right down the street. So we're going to do it right this time. So it was crazy. Now, in general, I don't really feel like he fell in the draft. There was a lot of teams at the top of the draft that didn't need a quarterback.
Starting point is 02:05:17 Yeah, no, I... Which is why we've discussed so much what an odd draft year this is. It's a meat and potatoes draft. I thought he'd go to Cincinnati at 11, so I thought he landed where he should land. Right. And it is a lot about where you land. So you're a little nervous about his situation here because he doesn't have that much experience and he's probably going to get thrown into the fire right away.
Starting point is 02:05:36 I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. In certain situations, you know, you feel like they could get overwhelmed. But I feel like on the field experience is the best experience if you don't have major expectations, which people shouldn't have for him this year. With these rookie quarterbacks, we get a little insane about over-criticizing what it is they're doing. Look at the situation he's walking into.
Starting point is 02:05:58 He does need a little bit of time. So as long as the expectations are where they should be with him, I think he's in a good place. Now, I think he would have been better off. with the Giants. Well, think about this. Think about how unfair it is in the NFL. So Brady gets Belichick.
Starting point is 02:06:13 Okay. And I like Brady, but he got Belichick. Josh Rosen, first job in the NFL, gets a defensive head coach, who's never been a coach, gets fired. If he goes to Miami, he'll get another defensive head coach that's never been a good head coach. So Josh Rosen's first two coaches are on the wrong side of the ball for him, and they'd never been head coaches, and Brady gets Belichick. Like, that's why I worry about Duane Haskins. sometimes I feel bad for these kids. I remember there used to be a kid named Jason Campbell,
Starting point is 02:06:39 came out of Auburn, went to Washington. Like Haskins, I liked him. I didn't love him. I think he had seven offensive coordinators in his first eight years. And it's like, that's not fair. Jason Campbell never had a chance. And that's on the front office. You can't expect any level of success when there's that much turnover.
Starting point is 02:06:55 So sticking with last night, the Giants had the most surprising move of the draft last night, choosing Daniel Jones over Haskins with the number six overall pick. And hearing Gettlement explain why he made his decision, you can't help but think maybe the Giants did Haskins a favor. During the season, I had gone to see Dwayne at Ohio State. I'd seen Dwayne play in the Big 12. Is that the Big 12 anymore?
Starting point is 02:07:20 I don't even know. Oh, Lord. You know, in Indianapolis. All these guys were at the senior ball, so I decided to stay. I had already, you know, made up my mind. I was staying for the game. Oh, God.
Starting point is 02:07:33 And frankly, Jordan, he, he walked out there and I saw a professional quarterback. After the three series that I watched. Oh, Jesus. I saw a professional quarterback. So that's when I was in full bloom. Jesus, love. Ohio State, were they in a Big 12?
Starting point is 02:07:50 I mean, that's unbelievable. I love it. That is unbelievable. It's not that often that we get sound like good. He runs a $5 billion franchise. Could you imagine me going, hey, Buffalo Sabres. Are they playing the NBA? What was it?
Starting point is 02:08:03 The NFL? Sabers, is it a hockey or football? Well, three series at the Senior Bowl is a big sample size. I'd also like to point out that the Giants have drafted the quarterback who won the Senior Bowl MVP in three straight years.
Starting point is 02:08:19 Davis Webb, Kyle Aletta, and Daniel Jones. So if you win the Senior Bowl MVP, you are almost assured to find yourself with the New York Football Giants. I will say Daniel Jones. I don't think he's his talented as Eli was at Ole Miss. He reminds me body type. He reminds
Starting point is 02:08:34 me of Eli Manning. But, but, you know, people can bag on Eli Manning. When Eli Manning came out of college, Eli Manning had a very nice arm. He didn't have a Jay Cutler arm or a Cam arm or a Big Ben arm, but Daniel Jones might knock. There's a lot of Eli qualities. He does not have Eli's arm. Well, look, you know, not to, this isn't Daniel Jones fault that the Giants took him where they took him. Like, good for him. But he came out of nowhere, really. We were not discussing the Giants taking Daniel Jones up until two days before the draft. That concerns me. And the biggest thing with all quarterbacks coming out of college into the NFL is accuracy.
Starting point is 02:09:12 To me, that's the most important thing. Are you accurate? Because you must be accurate in the NFL. And that's somewhat optional in college if you have amazing receivers or a lot of talent around you. By the way, Ohio State's been in the Big Ten 10, 107 years. Also talking about Trent Dilfer referring to him not having any juice. Nicole Auerbach tweeted this yesterday. This is a real quote from Duke coach David Cutliff.
Starting point is 02:09:34 Daniel Jones embraces something that we believe in here. Real swag is no swag. So that's a good note on Daniel Jones. I'm done with that story. Finally, it looks like Jeannie Bus is keeping it in the family. The Lakers are conducting their coaching search. Kurt Rambis, who's a senior basketball advisor, and his wife, Linda Rambus,
Starting point is 02:09:52 who's executive director of special projects, are very involved. According to Bill Orma, the athletic, the Lakers are sending a big contingent to Philadelphia today. that was yesterday for Monty Williams' second interview. Sources tell Sam Amick and me. Rob Polinka, Jeannie Buss are leading a group that also includes Joey Buss, Jesse Buss, Kurt and Linda Rambus, and C.O. Tim Harris.
Starting point is 02:10:12 And Bill Plashky of the L.A. Times added to the story, the goal is seemingly to move Rambus to the bench as an associate head coach. But if that doesn't work, he could become the assistant general manager. So. There's another story I'm about done with. She's from the Giants and the Lakers. It's a tedious. It's just a labyrinth.
Starting point is 02:10:29 It's like a, it's like a quilt, if you will. They're just like kind of finding pieces to put together the organization. A quilt, I'd sell to a garage sale for about four bucks. I mean, in general, I just don't understand why they're not just picking a direction or just saying, like, just come out and say, we have a plan. And I understand that there's stories that are going to leak and things are going to be out there. But we do have a plan in direction and it's all going to, you know, be shown very soon. But I don't know.
Starting point is 02:10:54 By the way, Ohio State, a reminder has been in the Big Ten, 1007 years. It's not like one of these. You like Texas, Santa Nebraska, you're bound. It's not Missouri who switches every 15 minutes. 107 years. Yeah, 1913. 1913. I've been there since 19th.
Starting point is 02:11:12 Gettelman's like, I don't know, Ohio State. Where's that down by Texas? Lord. All right, joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. Only been in the big leagues for a week with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Starting point is 02:11:26 Already my favorite baseball player. Cole Tucker, Pirate, Thodgers. Coming up next, The Herd. One more Herd? The Herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Well, I say it often.
Starting point is 02:11:41 Baseball needs as much personality as it can get NBA guys, NFL guys. I want to see baseball guys in commercial. So last weekend there was a great story. I'm watching it kind of unfold where the pirates had a shortstop in an outfield or run into each other and get hurt. And so the pirates are jammed. And so they call their minor league team and they're like, hey, bring Cole Tucker up. He was a very high pick.
Starting point is 02:12:04 He's bounced around the minors for a couple years. So they bring this good-looking kid full of hair up, Cole Tucker. As parents are in the stands. And here's his first at bat. 2-2 to center field. Pilar going back. Still going back. Pilar looks up that one.
Starting point is 02:12:29 For Cole Tucker. Wow. Are you kidding me? This is right out of the natural. The guy stepped out of the box because there's a lot. There's a flash of lightning right before the pitch. And then he provided the thunder himself. Let's bring him in.
Starting point is 02:12:41 Cole Tucker of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yes. You are nothing but a good looking kid. Hair. By the way, you're getting a lot of crud because of your hair, aren't you? Yeah, a ton, a ton. But thank you for having me. It's so, so cool to be here.
Starting point is 02:12:54 I'm a huge fan. Well, you and your dad, you said, I got a text. I don't know how we connected. Was it you DM me? I DM me. I think I actually start following you. Yeah, so I saw you followed me. And I was like, well, I'm in the big leagues.
Starting point is 02:13:05 I'm going to shoot my shot here. And I DM'd you. And you said, hey, like, we're in L.A. this weekend. Let's link up. So I'm here. And it's unbelievable. In the NFL or the NBA, you get drafted. You're a star.
Starting point is 02:13:17 You were a first round pick, but you go through the minor league system. And I've often said, I understand a young kid saying, man, I don't want to go playing Appleton, Wisconsin for six years. So despite the fact you are now a very talked about player, you were in the minors for, what, four and a half years? Yeah. Yeah, so it is a grueling process. I totally agree and understand.
Starting point is 02:13:37 I mean, I've always had the dream of playing in the big leagues, and it's always all I've ever wanted to do. So I was chomping the bit to get in the minor leagues just because I know what comes with that and what can happen at the end. And yeah, but it was a long journey, you know, injuries along the way and just the lifestyle. I was the first round pick, so I was super lucky. So my experience was different than a lot of other people's, but just super lucky and fortunate to get through it and to get to the big leagues
Starting point is 02:14:02 and be experiencing all this now. So your parents, I imagine your parents, you got a call up. So you're basically getting, preparing for a minor league baseball game. Yeah. And the manager comes to you and says what? So I got called at 1 a.m. after a game in Indianapolis and got the call. I saw the phone. I saw it was my manager, Espo.
Starting point is 02:14:21 And I was like, dude, don't mess with me. Don't mess with me. Because in AAA, you get a call from your manager in the middle of the night. You're expecting to go the big leagues, you know? So I was freaking out. And I was in the lineup the next day, you know, and you just pick up your life. It was 1 a.m. I had to be at the airport at 5 a.m. I was in the lineup the next day in the big leagues playing the Giants.
Starting point is 02:14:38 My God. It happened so fast. So your parents, you probably texted your parents right then, right? Yeah. So my mom just happened to show up that day in Indy and she was visiting me. But I texted my dad and said, hey, I called my dad. And I was like, hey, man, what are you up to? He's like, man, just watching the Pirates game. I was like, yeah, you're going to be watching the Pirates game tomorrow at PNC Park in the big leagues because I'm in the lineup.
Starting point is 02:14:57 And he got on a plane and it was nuts. So he had just arrived a couple hours before the game. Here's your parents in the stands watching your home run. Let's roll the tape. All I wanted him to do was barrel the ball. Anything that he could do to barrel it just to kind of get comfortable with what he's doing here. That's all I wanted. That was just crazy.
Starting point is 02:15:17 And I'm usually pretty composed, but I lost it pretty good. She's usually composed and I'm usually going crazy. Well, both of us went crazy because it's been a long day. We found 11 o'clock last night. Midnight. And I haven't slept. So we got from Phoenix. I got here at 3.15.
Starting point is 02:15:33 The game time was 4-05. You know, it's funny. Baseball, Bryce Harper's gotten some pushback. I mean, you look like somebody that would get an endorsement. Good looking. A lot of hair, a lot of flare. Baseball's got this thing that kind of drives me nuts. I want energy.
Starting point is 02:15:48 When I was a kid growing up, I love Pete Rose. I liked Al Roboski. I like the Aussie flip. I like Mickey Rivers. Some of these are too old. Mark Fidrich. I like the crazy guys. Mark the bird.
Starting point is 02:15:58 Mark the bird Fidrich. I liked all the crazy guys. Baseball now has kind of. a pushback on the personality. When you get excited, any pushback from anybody? Because the hair and the fun, I want you to take your helmet off. I want Bryce Harper. I want to see him.
Starting point is 02:16:11 Any pushback? No pushback. I mean, I feel like the sentiment is to respect the game. There's the respect the game group and there's the let the kids play group. You've heard this. And I think it's all about playing the game the right way. I play the game with a ton of energy and a ton of hustle.
Starting point is 02:16:27 And I feel like if you do that, you can do whatever you want in that instance. Obviously, it's about respecting the game. And no one's bigger than the game, Cole Tucker, Bryce Harper, Mark Fidrich, anybody. It's about playing the game the right way. And I play the game the right way. I play hard and with a ton of energy and just try to go out and help my team win. And at the end of the day, if you do that, man, the bat flips and the running around and the hair and the crazy slides, like that's just a part of the game. And that's what makes people come out to the ballpark and root for us and buy our jerseys and cheer us on.
Starting point is 02:16:53 Dodger Stadium tonight. That's a great ball club, by the way. Yeah, they're good. Seven, this guy's rake. That lineup is fantastic. Now, I am Imagine you're first at bat. I can't remember my first radio show. I would have been full of anxiety. Your first at bat, your first time at Dodger Stadium, how do you not get nervous? Man, you do, but it's because you care.
Starting point is 02:17:16 Like, you do get nervous. I got nervous walking up here on stage because I didn't want to trip and I want to make a good impression and I want to do well. You do get nervous, and that's a part of it, you know? But that's great, you know. I'm going to perform better because I'm nervous, because I care, you know?
Starting point is 02:17:31 If I didn't get nervous, I'm in the wrong business. I'm doing the wrong thing. You know, I am going to be nervous. It's going to be exciting. It's more excitement than nerves, but it's because I care and I want to go out and do well, and it's because I want to go out and win. Now, for the record, they like me in Pittsburgh. A lot of cities don't like me.
Starting point is 02:17:48 I know you're an Arizona Cardinal football fan. You looked like athletically you could have played receiver quarterback a little bit? I didn't, but I probably should have. Looking back in my childhood, I wish I had played football. But, yeah, I mean, I'm a speedy tall guy. I probably should have. Okay, Pittsburgh is one of, if not the greatest NFL city. No doubt.
Starting point is 02:18:05 So they're going to love you, but they're going to love you way more if you're a Steeler fan. So I'm just going to give you a heads up. They've got a big star there named Juju Smith-Schuster, who's a USC kid. So there's got a little West Coast connection they love. I want to play another little bit. You were on the MLB network. This is Cole Tucker last week who's kind of become a sensation in Major League baseball. Play this tape.
Starting point is 02:18:26 Guys all over the league have just been really cool, man. Archer's here and he's tight with David Price, obviously. David Price reached out and was like, hey, I'm a big fan. So that was awesome. I spoke with Colin Cowherd, Fox Sports guy, so that's really, really cool. I've got friends all over the league who just reached out. Cody Bellinger is one of my best friends. Scott Kingery is one of my best friends.
Starting point is 02:18:47 So just picking their brains and trying to find out how to navigate this big league lifestyle and this game. They've been a huge help with that. You know, you're a great story because one of the things that I get really emotional about it, like the NFL draft, like you change kids' lives. Yeah, fast. You literally kids grow up in most America's middle class slightly below or slightly above, and it changes your life. So the draft happened yesterday and today.
Starting point is 02:19:12 Do you remember the Major League Baseball draft? You were a very good player. I think you were picked 24th. 24th overall. So let's go to the baseball draft. Was it emotional for you? Oh, my God, man. It was unbelievable.
Starting point is 02:19:24 And I opted to stay home and not go to the draft just because, I mean, you don't want to be that kid. kid who's sitting there waiting and falling and sliding. I didn't want to be Brady Quint, essentially, and just sit there and wait. And I had all my family and friends over, all my loved ones at the house. And I found out at Pick 22 that I was going to go 24th of the Pirates. We were up and upstairs, ran upstairs, got on the phone with my agent, and got the news and got the call and just kind of had that moment, kind of like on Saturday when I hit the home run, like it was just the coolest family moment ever to that point in my life. And then went downstairs
Starting point is 02:19:56 and saw it on TV on the couch. Everyone went crazy. and dogpiled me and freaked out. The draft is something you never forget. It's so cool to watch these people on screen, see their lives change, and everyone's suited up. Some of these guys never want to suit in their life, and they're on national TV finding out they play for the Steelers or they play for the Cardinals. And I know what it's like to be in that position and to see other people get to
Starting point is 02:20:17 have their dreams come true. It's really cool. I could ask you who has the better hair, you or Bryce Harper. Is there a player in Major League Baseball, and this happens to almost every kid, somebody you really like as a player that you may face? Who's a guy that you've always loved watching? The guy I've always loved watching is absolutely Derek Cheater. I've always cheered for him.
Starting point is 02:20:37 And he's a tall biracial, lanky shortstop who signed out of high school that just kind of really spoke to me. But as far as people in the league now, I've gotten to play against Troy to Lewitsky in spring training. I loved watching him growing up. I'm so excited to play against Corey Seeger tonight. He's an unbelievable shortstop. He's a great player. Really good player. Seems like a great person.
Starting point is 02:20:57 I've never met him. but I really admire his game. I just love watching short stops, and I take pride in playing shortstop. And, I mean, being in the big leagues. A lot of short stops don't have power. I know, I know. Yeah, I mean, it's crazy.
Starting point is 02:21:10 I mean, nowadays, a lot of taller, more leverage guys are playing shortstop. So that's really cool and exciting to be a part of that next wave of people. But, I mean, I'm just excited to go out and play against anyone. I made a really big splash, but there's so much more that I want to do. There's a million things I haven't done. And I'm just excited to continue to play well. Bring your dad up here. I want your dad.
Starting point is 02:21:29 Come on, Dad. Just come on up here. We've got a minute left. I just want to get your dad. Jackie Tucker in the house. Jackie. Jackie. And you and Jackie, you watch the show every morning?
Starting point is 02:21:37 So, yeah, in the offseason, we eat breakfast and watch this show every day. I've made some money, lost some money on the blazing five picks. Please do not bet your salary on my football picks. Please do not. I was rolling with you in the playoffs last year, though. Thank you. Rolling. Dad, did you permit him to bet?
Starting point is 02:21:56 Because I was smoking on the play. playoffs last year. No, me, we watch, yeah, you need to get in the mic. Come over here, Dad, get the mic. You can put the mic over to Dad. It's okay. You can spread it out. Bingo, bingo.
Starting point is 02:22:09 Now we're in. 3, 2, 1, 3,1. No, we watch every day. Me and my friends watch every day. All my friends are blown up my phone right now because I'm here. We watch, we listen. We love you guys. It's so cool for us to be here.
Starting point is 02:22:21 It's our thing. I make breakfast and he does it before he works out. So I make his breakfast and we watch you, and then he goes to work out. You should. be incredibly proud. What a kid. And by the way, what age did you think? We got about 30 seconds. Was there an age? 8, 9, 12, you're like, I may have a big leaguer. Six or seven, I think it was. He's very talented. So he has an older brother that he followed around and played the game. So it was good. Wow. What a family. What a story. Congratulations.
Starting point is 02:22:49 Thank you, Colin. Thank you, Joy. Thank you. Appreciate you guys. Awesome. Way to go, Dad. Dad and son. Hit it out of the park. I'll get emotional. I just, I love these stories in America. All right, everybody, watch the NFL draft tonight, regardless of your team. I got my Colts on board. Thanks so much to Cole Tucker, Joel Clatt, Charles Davis, Reggie Bush, Trent Dill, for having an absolutely amazing weekend in Los Angeles. This has been the herd.
