Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:08 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:01:51 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. The volume.
Starting point is 00:02:15 The three-in-out podcast with me, John Middilcalf, is presented by Fandul's sportsbook. There's no better place to make every moment more than with Fanduel. Great odds and markets for baseball, the NBA, NHL, PGA, Tours, and so much more. awesome new and existing user promotions. America's number one sportsbook, very easy to use, safe and secure. You get your winnings fast.
Starting point is 00:02:37 I cannot recommend it enough. Love gambling with Fanduel. If you are new, just download the Fandual Sportsbook app to get started. Now sign up with promo code Colin so they know we sent you. What is going on everybody? John Middlecob, go low pod. Just finished watching the open. And despondent might be strong, but I had several shackles on Rory that would have paid out handsomely.
Starting point is 00:03:15 And I'm not going to lie, at around the turn, I started, what's the saying goes? I started counting my chickens before they hatched. And they obviously didn't all hatch because Rory not only did not win, he finished third, the mangy dog, the Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy, Cam Smith with just a, I mean, he had, he shot 64 and two of them. of his last three rounds. Is your open champion of the of the of the year? He was remarkable today. A lot of different angles,
Starting point is 00:03:45 a lot of different thoughts on this weekend. At Golopod, at Golopod, fire in those DMs, get your question to answer here on the show. Here's the plan this week. We'll have a golf podcast tomorrow. Then on Tuesday, we will have Andrew Whitworth.
Starting point is 00:04:02 And then on Thursday, we will have Cam Hayward, which I record, both those interviews last week, guys are studs. So we'll have the football stuff coming. I will be in, you know, lovely Lake Tahoe for the week. So everyone have a good week. But I got some content for you.
Starting point is 00:04:17 I'm powering this thing through and into the mic, into my computer before I take off here in an hour. But like I said, at GoloPod firing those DMs. You know, I was thinking about the open for this podcast really for like three straight days. because how would Rory not win the open? It just felt like the Gulf gods. It was just too perfect. Think about the symbolism that on Friday afternoon,
Starting point is 00:04:47 I guess it was morning for us, but Friday afternoon, Friday middle of the day, I guess, when Tiger Woods was finishing, you know, he wasn't going to, he missed the cut by a mile, walking down 18 and getting the huge ovation. Rory was on whole one. And he tipped his hat and you're like, this is, you can't make this stuff up.
Starting point is 00:05:05 He's going to run away with it. And then today, he's playing with Hovlin. Hovlin kind of starts falling apart. And he has a multiple shot lead. Halfway through his round, you're like, Rory McElroy is going to win his fifth major. He's going to win at St. Andrews. It's going to be incredible. And then the Mangie Dog, Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy.
Starting point is 00:05:24 People often say in golf that ball striking travels, it's like a run game or defense in football. And I agree. Like, if you can hit the ball. ball well, you can hit it well in any conditions. But to me, one thing, and I think this much more translates for all golfers, a short game really translates. Being able to get up and down from all over the place. We all have a friend. We all play golf with people that they might be a 10 handicapped. They might be a scratch golfer. If they have a great short game, like, they can score. It doesn't matter if they're off the fairway. It doesn't matter how they're hitting their irons. If your short game is awesome,
Starting point is 00:06:01 like you can get on fire, especially if you're playing well. And that's what we've seen two of these last three days with Cam Smith. And ultimately, if you have 36 puts in a day as a professional golfer, honestly, it's remarkable that Rory shot two under. He had 36 puts. Two putted every single hole. He could not buy a putt to me really these last two days. Outside like 15, 20 feet.
Starting point is 00:06:29 He didn't hit any of them. And definitely like the last four or five holes, as again, someone that had a massive, massive wager on Rory. Like I didn't have that much confidence once he fell a shot behind because every time that he would get like, have an 18 foot birdie putt, it was not going to go in. And you knew it before he putted it. And it's just one of those days.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And putting can be a little random with most guys for Cam Smith. Like the guy makes everything. He does not miss. His short game is, I mean, it's different. because Phil really hung his hat on the flop shot, but his touch, like it's kind of Phil like he dominates around the green. And obviously on this course,
Starting point is 00:07:08 because you can put everything, he just put on a clinic. And Rory, like, Roy didn't play that bad. I just watched his post-round press conference. He's like, I didn't hit it that bad. I just could not make a put. And if you're not going to make a put on Sunday, the reason we all consider Tiger Woods the goat,
Starting point is 00:07:26 because when he had to do it, in big moments, consistently on Sundays throughout his entire career, regular tournaments, majors, you name it. He made long putts. He made putts when he had to do it. Roy has had an awesome season, right? Finish second at the Masters. Finish top 10 in the other majors.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Obviously, somehow he didn't finish second in this, but he basically, to me, you know, he was right in this. Like he was, him and Cam Young, right? And really Cam Young Eagles, the 18th hole today to ultimately want up Rory. but, I mean, come on. He just could not make a putt. And he's had a remarkable career. He's an all-time legend.
Starting point is 00:08:05 I mean, this thing was playing out to go, Roy McElroy turned his career around, where it felt like he became a dominant player again. Then he led the charge to fight the live guys. And then he's going to win at St. Andrews? It would have been one of the great seasons for any golfer of all time. Like, given the impact that he's had on the sports,
Starting point is 00:08:28 sport. Like he's had better individual seasons in terms of winning. Obviously, he's won multiple majors in the same season. But I would say this is the most important season of his career if he had won, which obviously he didn't. And you just, he's so close. And I honestly had the thought like after this, could he have a season where he wins a couple majors. I thought today when I was going to pick up breakfast and he had a two shot lead, I'm like, Roy's going to be like six to one next year going into the Masters. And he'll still be the heavy favorite. But like, let's face it, when the dust settled, Rory was a very, very important person to this season. He had some incredible moments. The sand shot on 18 at Augusta, the majority of this week. But he's had the
Starting point is 00:09:13 third best season on tour. Like, Cam Smith now has entered the Scotty Sheffler territory. Right. I thought that Scotty Sheffler was a stone cold lock to be the player of the year. And it may still play out that way. What did he finish today? I know he fell off a little bit. Scotty shot 74 today, so he T-21. But he's, he was, I think, top five in every major, and he won the Masters. And obviously, he won three other tournaments.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Like, he has four wins and the Masters. Well, Cam Smith is the players champion, and he's the Open champion. I think it's a conversation. Those two guys have had the two best seasons. And sometimes just the nature of how we think about life, right, what have you done for me lately? Not that Scotty's been bad. I mean, he could have won the U.S. Open what, a month ago.
Starting point is 00:09:59 But it's hard, like, watching Cam Smith this year. I mean, he was in the final group at the Masters with Scottie Shephler. Like those two guys, when I think about 2022, I'll think about two things. Those guys seasons and kind of Rory and J.T. Fighting the Live guys. But ultimately, Rory, like, we judge them, and this is like Tom Brady, like Nick Sabin, there are a small amount of people where it's Super Bowl or bust. championship or bust, major winner or bust.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Like, Roy doesn't play for second or third. Like, it's money for him and it's just another notch on his belt, but it's kind of irrelevant. Like, the only way he truly gets credit because of how good he is, because of the bar he set, is when he wins. Like, for Cam Smith, this was a historic moment. His first major champion, when your short game's that good, I don't see how he doesn't win more majors. Like him and Scotty Schaeffler are just not going away.
Starting point is 00:10:52 And Rory, for the majority of this week, I'm thinking. I would say the last two decades, when the guys have their A game, obviously Tiger and Phil are the best two players in the last 20, 25 years. I think when Rory had his A game, he's the third best player of that generation. Just in terms of stylistically, of watching him play, of how pure he is, just the total package. And the other guys you would throw in that mix was Jordan. Jordan was really more of a grinder and an incredible putter. DJ, pretty boring player.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Brooks got hot, got news for you. We often like, are these live guys going to mail it in? No, Bryson's not. No, DJ's not. Brooks might have. Brooks might be over it. I mean, he had a hell of a career. Brooks might just go to irrelevancy now, to be honest with you.
Starting point is 00:11:39 And he might not care. Does he even like golf? Who knows? But I do think that Rory has got his swag back, but he's got to win. Like, he's just, like, Tom Brady doesn't, like, he doesn't care if he makes the playoffs. like Rory to finish third like that just
Starting point is 00:11:53 it doesn't do it for anybody including himself that's not why he enters these tournaments at this point in time in his career it's about racking up majors and I still believe that he can get to six, seven majors but it shows you how hard it is and to me I was thinking about this watching Cam Smith and for a large period of time
Starting point is 00:12:11 Scottie Sheffler was white in the mix those guys and it's rare I grew up I was born in 1984 and I started playing golf in the early 90s Well, the technology was terrible. Now, I didn't play with Persimmons, but the woods and the technology was nothing like it is today. A lot of people play, and the older players talk about it about using a softer ball. I use a TP5X now, a tailor-made ball.
Starting point is 00:12:36 That ball, there was nothing remotely like that golf ball in the mid-90s. To play golf at a high level in the mid-90s and before, you had to be an incredible player to be a pro golfer. You had to be able to work the ball. You had to be consisting of contact. Now the technology has changed the game. Obviously, how far they hit it. A lot of guys believe that it's the ball as much it is as the clubs. And we eventually might get a rollback of the ball.
Starting point is 00:13:02 That's a huge push from a lot of the golf elitist to roll back the ball. But I know that Scotty Sheffler and definitely Cam Smith, those guys, and this can't be said for every guy. It just cannot. Could play in any era because they are artists. like they shape the ball they can hit phase they can hit draws they obviously can work the ball around the green like those guys are proper players
Starting point is 00:13:27 now it doesn't mean they're the best player and honestly their game would probably translate historically when the technology was way shittier in the 50s the 60s maybe even more than Rory's like Rory has benefited a lot from the technology now you could argue he's just one of the purest drivers of the golf ball we've ever seen but he's also using drivers that like
Starting point is 00:13:47 didn't even come close to existing 30, 40, 50 years ago. That's what's so crazy about Tiger Woods. He dominated in so many different eras with technology. We saw him dominate in the 90s with the crappy technology. We saw him win the Masters in 2019 at 44 years old. Like he could do it all. Why? Because he could do everything.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Same thing with Phil. We just don't know. And it's always a huge argument when we talk with athletes about the older generations. It's impossible to know. It's one of the great hypotheticals that can never actually be. be answered, right? Could Quentin Nelson block mean Joe Green? Could Larry Bird and LeBron James, who would win in the Celtics playing some of those Cavs teams? Could Steph Curry play against Michael Jordan? Those are great conversations. We will never get it answered. What would Jack Nicholas and
Starting point is 00:14:34 Lee Trevino look like with the technology now? Well, what would Rory, DJ and some of these guys look like if they played in the 60s? We can argue until we're blue in the face, but we'll never get an answer. but I do think it is fair to watch a guy and go, that would translate. That would work. And when you watch Cam Smith, how fucking awesome he is, with a wedge or a putter in his hand,
Starting point is 00:14:56 that translates any era, any ball, any club. His touch is remarkable. His play, like, it was mind-blowing today. The guy could not miss. And you know what? Typically, when he's on, he doesn't miss. He's one of the best putters
Starting point is 00:15:12 easily on tour right now, but like his hot streak, I've been watching golf for a couple decades. When he's on, like that's as good as it gets. Who are some of historically some of the best putters, right? Brad Faxston, Steve Stricker, you know, some guys, I mean, some of the, you know, guys that don't hit it as far. Kisner was, Brian Harmon, some of the, you know, some of the scrapier guys on tour. Ricky was for a long period of time.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Jordan had his moments. Like, that's what Cam Smith's doing. And I don't, it doesn't feel like he's just kind of hot. He's just riding a wave. like that's kind of his game. He's not Mr. like, honestly, the knock on his game is he can be a little squirly off the tee. Can't we all? But you win the players and you win the open in the same year?
Starting point is 00:15:57 Damn, man. What a, what a freaking season from Camp Smith. And honestly, what a week. I've never been, played golf overseas. I actually went with my dad in New Zealand. He used to go on fishing trips and I went when I was 12 and we played golf. But I mean, I don't really count that. but I've never played golf, never been over there.
Starting point is 00:16:15 The only links golf I've really ever played is Band and Dunes for my brother's bachelor party three, four years ago. And it was awesome. It was, I honestly probably didn't enjoy it enough. I can't wait to go back. But you watch this weekend and you go, if you're a golfer and if you're listening to this podcast, I would imagine you are, I got to go there. I have to experience that.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I'm not talking to the open. I'm talking, I got to go there and play. I want to go to that town. I want to experience that. Starting point is 00:20:06 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. It's clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:20:29 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:21:34 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free. iHeartRadio app search learn the hard way and listen now you know it's it's it's the coolest part about the sport of golf i
Starting point is 00:22:00 say it all the time like my relationship with golf is so much different than my relationship with football and i love football so do a lot of people and i've made a living working in it and now talking about it but i i will never get the opportunity to play at lambo no one will unless you play in the nflm and the overwhelming majority of human beings, even if they play football growing up, the last time that they ever play the sport is in high school, then a small, small percentage play in college, and then obviously a minuscule amount of people. Tiny, tiny group, play professionally. Yet golf, whether you start it when you're five years old or whether you pick up your first club at 55, you can play the courses that the pros play. And honestly, it's one of the only actually, it's one of the only
Starting point is 00:22:51 activity sports, you really can play till the day you can't really walk till the day you die. That is not the case with all the other major sports and it's definitely not the case
Starting point is 00:23:00 with the other sport that means so much to me. Because we don't play football as we grow up. It's not in the cards for anyone. Hell, even professional football players, most of them are out of the league
Starting point is 00:23:11 by the time they're 30. They never get to play another snap. And these are guys that make it to the pros. Yet in golf, we could watch St. Andrews. We can watch Pebble Beach. Obviously,
Starting point is 00:23:21 There are some courses that, you know, who knows if I'll ever get the opportunity to go play Augusta, right? There are some country clubs that we just may never have access to. But there are a large percentage of courses like last year the U.S. Open, Tori Pines. Anyone can play it. And whether you're 65 years old or whether you're 18 years old, you can play the courses that these guys play. And I think one of the coolest trips in America or the world, excuse me, if you are a golfer, has to be going to Scotland. in Ireland and playing the lynx golf. Now, the wind they got this week would be ideal.
Starting point is 00:23:57 When I went to Bandin Dunes, there were days when it was like 50 mile an hour winds. It was outrageous. And under no circumstances would I ever play under those conditions unless I was playing Lynx Golf. And you could go to the open. You could go to some of these other courses that they play, Karnuski, Royal St. George. Obviously, they have other courses around there that just look remarkable. that just look fun.
Starting point is 00:24:22 It just look like you can enjoy yourself. And think about what that town is. It's just booze and golf. Now, I get it if you're not a golfer, you couldn't understand, and you won't get it. But for those of us that are, I don't know if there's a heaven or there's a hell, but while we're alive, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:43 you could argue if you love golf, that's as close to get to heaven as you can get. Going over there, I know people that have been there, They just say it's mind-blowing. It's freaking awesome. You finish, you go to the jigger in, and you get a beer. You get a Guinness.
Starting point is 00:25:00 And it's, like I said, we get to do it as we age. We can't say, you don't get to, even if you're a baseball player, you're playing fast pitch when you're 50 years old, most people retire from playing pickup basketball because they don't want to tear an Achilles. You know, and that's the cool part about golf. You get to play. And you get to go like, God, I can relate to Rory not making a put. God, I don't know how Cam Smith just did that.
Starting point is 00:25:23 I could never hit that chip. Honestly, Tiger Woods has become very relatable in his older age. Spraying shots, missing puts. He's closer to the everyman golfer. He has all these injuries. He has aches and pains. Obviously, some of himself inflicted. But I was blown away by how cool this weekend was.
Starting point is 00:25:46 And listen, we talk a lot of shit about some of the random tournaments throughout the year that just turned into birdie fests. It just guys, birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, 22 under, 18 under, 18 under, 25 under. And it does get boring. 20 under won this. 19 under, 18 under. Guys were going low, left, and right.
Starting point is 00:26:04 And it never felt that way. It never felt like it was easy. Even though when you shoot 60 or shoot 20, 20 under par, and you have three of your four rounds are 67, 64 and 64, I'm not saying it was easy, but he made, Sam Smith made it look relatively easy, but it never felt that way watching it. And that's, you just don't get that at the highest level anymore with how good these guys are.
Starting point is 00:26:28 It honestly can become monotonous. It can become boring. And that style of golf just isn't. It's exciting. It's riveting. You're on the seat of your pants, you know? So, especially if you have a ticket on Rory to win. For those of you that had Cam Smith,
Starting point is 00:26:45 congratulations. Very, very cool week. wanted to hit on a couple other things. Liv had a pretty good week. I mean, Dustin Johnson finished sixth. Bryson D. Shambot might have had the sneakiest top ten you've ever seen. Over the weekend, Bryson, 67, 66. Shot 11 under on the weekend.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Like, that's a pretty good week. Speeth just had another good week, finished top 10. Tommy Fleet was playing really good golf. Hovland. Do you know the craziest part about Victor Hovland? Is you saw it this weekend. and really got a little tight today. It happens.
Starting point is 00:27:20 He's young. He's a stud. If Victor Hovlin didn't have to chip, he's basically Scotty Sheffler or Cam Smith. Absolute Stripe show. Hitch his iron. Listen, I know Colin Morikawa, his resume is much better than Victor Hovlin,
Starting point is 00:27:36 and his short game is just in a different stratosphere than Victor. But when I watch Victor hit the ball, and I watch Colin hit the ball, and I'm not trying to crush Colin, I just go, yeah, that guy hits it better. than that guy. And I know the stats and shot gains approach. I just watch Victor Hovlin hit six irons. And I watch Colin Moracawa hit his irons and I go, I don't think that guy hits a better. Now, he cannot chip. Well, what happened this week? You don't need a chip.
Starting point is 00:28:03 It's why if you have a bad short game, and I would imagine many people that are listening do, if you go play Lynx golf, you can put everything. And you don't have to bring out a wedge. You don't have to bump and run stuff. You don't have to hit, you're not hitting sandwages because you can't stop anything. It's why Rory on 18. And I know that Aesinger said that like Seve or Jack or whatever the quote is, like, if you want to, if you want a two putt, you know, if you want to lag something close, put it, put it.
Starting point is 00:28:29 If you want to make it, chip it. I would have putted that. Like the likelihood of him chipping that in, everyone putted that all week long. Why is he chipping it? Now, was he going to make it? He hadn't made anything. It was borderline impossible. But you got to put that.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Now, you can say it was too much, too late. whatever, but what was he doing? What was he doing? Cam Young. I don't know why Rob Manfred is sponsoring Cam Young, but they got pretty good pub. A lot of Major League Baseball, the brand on the shoulder today, or on the sleeve. But what a cool weekend. Congratulations to Cam Smith.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Not congratulations to me and Rory. I got very cocky. I started cashing my winnings. I started thinking about, like, you know, maybe I'll pay like four straight mortgage payments with my winnings. maybe all, you know, invest in the crypto. You know, maybe all, who knows? And then it didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:29:20 And now I'm kind of angry. That sucked. But the tournament did not suck. But it kind of does when you're gambling on the guy that doesn't win who should have won, but then he doesn't win. Hopefully everyone has a good week. Just wanted to get a little golf content out there. Congratulations to Cam Smith. Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzie.
Starting point is 00:29:36 He's having a remarkable season. I mean, him and Sheffler, those two guys, feels like they win every week. again, podcast. We'll have Whitworth coming out Tuesday. We'll have Hayward coming out Thursday. And we'll just keep rocking and rolling. Football's right around the corner. Feels like the golf season unofficially kind of ended, like the FedEx playoffs. I love golf, but who even cares? This guy's playing for a lot of money. It's the PJ Tours live moment, honestly. There's their way to hand out cash. And we don't have a major now. I think someone tweeted it like 220 days or something.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Augusta, long way to go. A fantastic major season. Masters was awesome. The Open was awesome. The U.S. Open was awesome. The live drama. It's been fun starting to golf podcast in 2022. I think we timed this one pretty well.
Starting point is 00:30:28 I think we timed this one pretty well. Hopefully everyone, like I said, have a good week. Talk to everyone soon. Peace. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:32:00 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
