This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table.
right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think
there's a more important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the
most important years for black people in American history.

What is going on, everybody?
John Middilcoff.
This is Go Low, actually.
Because no football podcast today, we will have one coming out on Tuesday.
And then again, on Friday, Memorial Day, right around the corner.
I don't know if I'm going to be doing podcasts next weekend.
But what, Football Podcasts is week.
I'm reacting right now to the PGA Championship.
Your winner, Chuching, chicken dinner.
I told you Justin Thomas will dive into everything that just happened over the last four days.
today on the
Golo pod.
But like I said,
we will have
football stuff
on Tuesday
and then again
on Friday
and then obviously
the mailbag
at John Middilcoff
is the mailbag
for three and out
and if you want to do
golf questions
because we also have
a golf podcast
coming out on
Wednesday.
A lot going on.
We are a
content factory.
Just keep churning
baby.
Keep churning.
May 22nd
no big deal.
We'll keep podcasting.
This isn't digging ditches.
Let's not act
like this is that difficult.
But hopefully
everyone's had
good weekend, sun is shining, great time for golf. Memorial Day right around the corner.
Then the 4th of July, it's the best. I live for the summer. I love the summer. I love the fall,
you know, because of football, but the summer is probably my favorite season. I don't see how
anyone could argue that one. But if you want to ask a golf question at Golopod is the Instagram,
slide up into those DMs. Share the podcast with your friends. Obviously, if you like golf,
tell your friends about it, tell your enemies about it. Tell whoever about it. I don't care. Just
Just share it with the people.
We're big on organic reach.
Well, I've been saying it for a long time.
Justin Thomas isn't just going to win a major.
This guy's destined to win like eight.
This guy's destined to be one of the great players in the history of the sport.
Eldrick Tiger Woods didn't just gravitate to this guy randomly.
You know, it sounds a little crazy,
but I believe that he sees some of himself in JT.
in a day and age where technology,
you just basically hit the ball straight,
even your drivers, unless you're trying to hit a cut or a draw,
you don't miss it that much.
This guy who's grown up in that technology, boom,
plays golf like it's the 80s or 90s.
There is not a shot that Justin Thomas does not have in his back.
The two best players of my lifetime are Tiger and Phil.
They literally could do it all.
High, low, stingers, draws,
cuts, no shot around the green, chipping, wedges, sand play, length, they had it all.
A lot of guys now do not have it all.
There is nothing this guy can do.
As you saw he did it on 18 twice, the last hole he played in regulation, and then he did it again in the extra holes,
that low cut stinger.
Most guys don't have that in the bag.
This guy, you know, like, are you a thrower or are you a pitcher?
this guy is a golf shot creator.
And Tiger Woods is the best at it.
And Phil wasn't far behind.
It's why they were so successful, right?
So I Phil won six majors,
why Tiger won 15.
Because in the toughest conditions,
you can't just be like, only cuts.
Like me, I can really only play a cut.
And listen, I'm just a four-handicap.
We're actually playing pretty good right now.
But like most, even above-average golfers,
you don't have every shot in the bag.
But even the best, like most guys,
I would say nowadays, it doesn't feel like they're that comfortable going the opposite shot of what they do.
Like Rory, Rory plays draws.
JT, what does he do?
It doesn't matter.
There is nothing that he can't do.
When he won the players a couple years ago, on the par five, the dog leg left, a whole 16,
he hit that low stinger draw off the T.
And then today he's hitting the low stinger basically cut.
And that's why this guy now, as you get older, you mature, because he clearly runs hot.
so does John Rom.
I watched him the day seeing a guy who was very calm,
seeing a guy who was very collected,
seeing a guy who has been through it all,
the highs and the lows.
And when Mito was shrinking,
and we'll get into him in a second,
Willie Z didn't really shrink.
He just hasn't learned how to win yet.
It's pretty crazy because he's having an incredible run.
Did JT the cream rose today?
Now, he got a little lucky.
I mean, he started the day way back.
The leader was at minus nine
and getting in the playoffs, it ended up being minus six.
So he needed stuff to go out of his control,
but the only thing he could control was his own game.
And he shot 300 a day.
And really, it could have easily been four if he hit the putt on 18.
And if he had, he would have won it outright.
He's a remarkable player.
And I'm telling you, I am putting, I screwed up
because I was telling everyone bet on this guy, bet on this guy.
Somehow I lost money, and I still bet on JT.
Because I spread around all my bets to all these random guys.
Top 10 for Kevin Kisner and Hedeky and Kagan Bradley, none of them even got close.
The one guy that I was the most confident was going to win, I put $25 and somehow I lost a net of $75
after betting a total of $500.
Shows you, you know, I should have just put my $500 on JT.
If I had done that, I had $10,000.
I felt confident about him.
Now, I wouldn't say he got lucky today, but the situation became advantageous for him.
but I'm telling you, like this guy,
this guy's not a three-time major champion
when his career's over.
This guy's like an eight-time major champion,
nine-time major champion,
seven-time major champion.
Like, he's going to be thought of,
I mean, he might,
you're never going to get to Tiger,
but like the Tom Watson's,
the Phil Mickelsons, the Nick Faldos,
like that's going to be the group he's going to be in.
And he comes from a golfing family.
You can see how proud he is.
And as someone who,
the reason I love golf and I play golf,
a big reason was I grew up playing with my dad.
I think it's really cool to watch
that interaction with his dad, who is also his coach,
how much pride his father took after he won it.
He was just as excited as Justin.
So it really is a family affair.
And I think his, like, ultimately, J.T. is a golf nerd.
So is Tiger.
And that's why they get along.
They're not just like Brooks, too cool for school.
Like, he's here to become a legend.
And he talks about it over and over.
He's doing this to create a legacy for his family as just go down as one of the great golfers
of all time.
and I think now with bones on the bag,
think of what bone saw for 25 plus years with Phil.
He saw it all.
Major championships, major implosions,
ton of wins.
There's nothing he hasn't seen.
He knows all these courses.
I blood bank guarantee Justin Thomas,
and I felt the most confident,
and I tweeted this last week,
and I've been saying this for a while,
he was going to win one of the majors this year,
one of the three.
I thought it was going to be St. Andrews.
Well, he figured out a way to get something.
I am even more confident now that he's going to win St. Andrews.
Because what is the open?
It's about making shots, especially when the wind kicks up.
He's tailor-made for it.
To me, the crazier that course gets, if the wind's pumping and the weather and the elements
are up, to me, J.T. would be the heavy, heavy favorite going into that tournament now with
bones on his back.
Glad to see him win.
Listen, it's cool to pick the winner and all, but pissed off, I didn't put more money on it.
But it's fun to watch the guy play golf.
because he's 5-9, a buck-60, hits it 330 yards,
but his touch with his wedges is second to none.
He's such a great iron player.
He's so good around the greens.
He's such a just, he feels big.
You know, whether he's going to win or are going to lose,
it feels like he belongs in that environment.
And let's face it, we've seen over the years,
like some hot names like don't always belong in these environments.
And I think Justin is crazy as it sounds because he's so accomplished.
He has a ton of wins on the PG.
tour. He now has multiple majors.
I don't even think he sniffed or scratched the ceiling.
His upside is so high.
No different than Willie Z.
I thought Willie Z today, like I tip my hat.
He easily could have imploded.
He had the look of a guy if they didn't have the mental toughness.
And anyone that's played golf for $20 from $50, when it starts going, whether you're a
PGA tour player, whether you're a seven handicap, it can just go.
And there's nothing you can do.
it's a pretty helpless feeling.
It's like you're on an island,
like a corner in football.
You're like,
what do I do to fix this?
And the great players,
the grinders,
and Justin Thomas is a grinder.
When I watch Willie Z play golf,
he's a grinder.
Rory McElroy is not really a grinder.
You know,
and when you're a grinder,
you're going to be in the mix
way more than you're not.
Because you're not always,
it's like a pitcher.
You know,
you ever hear a major league pitcher talk?
I make 30 starts,
five to seven times I have my A stuff,
a large,
percentage, I have my B stuff.
And then maybe six, seven starts, I have my CD stuff.
Well, can I still win with my CD stuff?
Pedro Martinez could.
Greg Maddox could.
And when you learn how to do that, you're going to win when you have high-end talent
with your A game.
So Willie Z, when he doesn't have his A game, if he can still be in the mix.
Like, this guy, to me, is putting himself like President's Cups,
Riders Cups.
He's going to win a major.
He's too good.
I saw a tweet from Justin Ray that said,
he's the first guy since Ernie Ells to get five top tens in his first eight majors.
Ernie freaking else.
Like that's pretty elite company.
This guy is an elite player.
He did not lose it today.
He just got beat.
And to me, there's nothing wrong with getting beat.
Like you watch Willie Z, you go,
this guy has championship level game.
I don't see how anyone could argue that.
Because he's doing it over and over and over again on the toughest courses,
which is really hard to do.
I mean, look, John Rahm, look at all these guys
that they just crumble.
And Willie Z, every single major,
he's just right there near the top.
Not just a one-off.
Literally every major the guy plays in,
he's right near the top.
Now, it's got to suck to be this close
and not get it done,
but he is turning into an ATM machine.
He is printing cash right now.
He is making so much money
for a guy that hasn't won.
It's pretty remarkable to watch.
Now, one thing that makes golf
a lot like there's pressure whether you play basketball, whether you play in the NFL, whether you're
a NASCAR driver, any high level sport, there's pressure, right? But the difference in golf,
like in football, there's like a play, you're running, in basketball, it's just nonstop action.
Football, or excuse me, golf is a little like baseball where it's like, you know, you're kind
of doing a lot of thinking, you're standing there, you can overthink stuff. And I know
Mito Pereira said that he thought he had a good game plan going at 18, but I've never seen a
swing like that from any human being
not like on the PGA
tour. That looks like something you would do.
That looks like something I would do.
But part of what makes golf incredible
from a drama standpoint to where
we're sitting on our couch is
moments like that. Because
your heart just sank. I mean,
he pumped this thing in the fucking river.
He has a one shot lead in a major championship
and he pumps it in the water.
The creek, the river, whatever that was.
And the moment he did it, you're like,
he's done. There is absolutely no way he's figuring this out. And what did he do? He double bogeed
and he missed the playoffs. He went from having a one shot lead to one swing. He's in the drink.
Three or four shots later, he's sitting there watching. Now, Willie Z talked to Amanda. Mito talked to
Amanda. These guys are not running from it. They're not Phil, you know, hiding somewhere. They wore it on the
chin. That sucks. He obviously still made a lot of money. But this tournament paid out $2.7 million.
He ended up winning $870,000.
With that shot, he basically lost $2 million.
That was a $2 million shot essentially and being a major champion.
And I know he said after the round, like his goal when the week started was just to make the cut.
And I believe him.
I don't think he's making that up.
A guy like him, he's not thinking like top tens and majors.
But once you get in that position, like I'm sorry, it changes.
you have a lead on Sunday going into the 18th hole.
So I just under no circumstances.
Now listen, we've all been on the 18th hole in a money match.
Whether you're playing for a dollar, whether you're playing for $500 or whether you're playing
for a major, you get tight, you feel it.
But you got to find a way to just get the ball in the fairway.
The only thing that can really destroy you there is being at the bottom of that little
creek.
And his ball ended up at the bottom of that little creek.
And it ended his chances.
and he's clearly a really talented player,
but holy shit, that has to sting.
I mean, I, again, I understand that like your goals at the beginning of the week
weren't sky high, but once you're in the position,
you have to start thinking like, I can do this.
I can be a major champion.
I can win this golf tournament.
Then all of a sudden,
Kruplunk, and, you know, you're watching the playoff on TV like me and you.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal,
but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Last but not least,
what Tiger Woods did on Friday
is one of the more impressive rounds
I've ever seen him play.
Now, obviously, he's had
some of the most remarkable rounds
in golf history. But the majority of them,
beside like the 08
U.S. Open, he was pretty healthy,
right, in the earliest career
when he was young and kicking everyone's ass.
He has now,
he's never shown us, and he barely
talks about the details of it,
but it's pretty clear.
His ankle is not a human ankle.
It is completely a created whatever.
If you told me that he's playing on essentially a prosthetic ankle,
I would believe you.
And on Friday, he didn't have it early.
And he was not going to make the cut.
And Rory said after the way the pain that he looked like
that he was in on Thursday,
that 100% he would have withdrawn.
My thought was after Thursday
that every single player,
in the field. Let me repeat, every single player in the field would have withdrawn. But Tiger has so
much pride, and he wants to see if he can make the cut. And he looked like he had no business making the cut
on Thursday, on Friday. These par threes at this golf course were all like 220 to 140 yards. I mean,
they were really hard. Guys were getting destroyed on the par threes. It was, you don't norm,
listen, I think having three or four par threes well over 200 yards is kind of,
stupid. Like, I'm all four having like a 235 yard par three, maybe even a 200 yard par three also,
but you got to have at least one, especially on a course is playing this hard? Like, can't you
just make one 170 yards? So you just have a birdie potential or just a normal hole? I mean,
these guys were, how many double and triple bogeys do you see on the par threes? It was, I don't
enjoy that. Like, I don't need, make my par fives and definitely my par four is the challenging.
Part three is maybe one or two is hard, but every single one, it felt like the average
like average me or you on these par threes.
I mean, whoa, I would have been hitting like three wood from 240 into the wind.
I mean, I would have been praying for bogey.
It was outrageously hard.
But Tiger's mental fortitude, his will, and whether it's his ego, his stubbornness,
his warrior mentality, he refused to tap out.
And then when the dust settled, he had beat Rory on Friday and he had made the cut.
And Saturday was not going to be conducive for him once he made the cut, right?
It's freezing cold.
I had a pretty, I had a fun night on Friday,
so I kind of come to a little hungover in my bed
about 8 a.m. I check, and he's just, you know,
five over through like seven holes imploding.
I'm like, this is ugly.
But to me, what he accomplished on Friday was all worth it.
He easily could have told them to fire up the G5
after he made the cut and said, guys, I'm out.
Now, I understand he had some momentum,
want to see how he played.
But once it was going to be cold,
Tiger is not going to excel at this point in time
with this messed up ankle.
in cold weather.
The only chance Tiger to me has to be successful is when it's warm,
when he's sweating.
The moment it gets cold, he's screwed.
He can't move.
Old people in general in the cold, you know, gets stiff.
Hell, I'm 37 and I get stiff.
So the heat, it's why I love playing golf in the heat,
warms me up, gets those muscles loose.
But that performance, and even Rory said after,
it was like remarkable to watch.
It was inspiring.
He beat Rory McElroy.
I mean, after Rory took the lead.
into Friday. And Tiger beat him. I mean, it's crazy. I do think Tiger, Earl used to say,
Let the Legend Grow. Like, that was always his famous line to Tiger, let the legend grow.
And I think moments like Friday, for Rory and Jordan to see that up close. And listen,
Rory is just not a grinder. He's an elite talent, but he's not a grinder. Because as a buddy of
mine told me, Scotty Raber, who's a college golfer, his take is on Rory. And I agree with him.
Rory, when he, Rory doesn't have his A game,
he still tries to play like he has his A game.
Really good players start, you know, changing up their game.
Start messing with their swing mid-round.
Maybe start hitting some low shots.
Maybe you don't just play normally when you're not playing well.
You have to, like J-T can start mixing in different shots.
Phil and Tiger were king of that, right?
Can you do other things?
But Rory just blasts away.
And if it's not going where he wants it to go,
it's not great.
And Tiger just is king of just finding a way
to get it in the hole under any means necessary.
And even at 46 years old, he could barely walk.
That 69 on Friday was one of my, probably it's up there.
I mean, obviously winning major championships, but just one of the cooler moments for
me of Tiger's career.
I was inspired watching that, just sitting on the couch, watching this guy absolutely
grind to make the cut.
Then he withdrew after Saturday.
Don't blame him.
You think Tiger Woods is playing for him?
for DFL and $20,000 check, he doesn't care.
Honestly, he didn't need to play the weekend.
But, man, what a moment.
And I'm telling you, I think Justin Thomas is coming for majors, like a lot of majors.
This guy is going to rattle them off.
If that putter just remotely gets a little better, like I like Justin Thomas more
than all these other guys on tour.
Like, I'll take Justin Thomas over John Rom any day of the week.
I'll take Justin Thomas over Colin Moracawa any day of the week.
I'll take him over all these guys.
The Cantlays, the Xanders,
like I just, he's in a different level.
You know, I view him like a Mahomes
or a Josh Allen.
Like I just, he's on a different level.
Doesn't mean he can't, he's going to win them all.
It's golf. It's hard. You're playing huge, you know,
150 person fields, right?
One guy, even if you have great,
your great player, your odds are 10 to 1, right?
It's very, very difficult.
But you got to love the look in his eye,
just his natural maturity,
because you matured, you just get,
older. And his game, he's got it all, man. He's got it all. I mean, he's like, he's like the shorter
little version. You know, I think he has a lot of parallels to Tiger and Phil in terms of their game,
that there is nothing the guy can't do. And when you can do it all, your game translates to every
course. And the majors, especially the non-masters, are always going to be just difficult
spots. You know, I mean, look, six under got you into a playoff. Most of the guys that wiped out
and he just found a way to stay, keep the ship, you know, above water,
and now he's a two-time major champion.
But I'm telling you, I think when the season ends, he'll have three
because he's winning at St. Andrews.
Volume.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two.
