we have a lot of drama going on between Kevin Durant as well as his former Warriors teammates. Now, Dream on Green and Clay Thompson going at Kevin Durant after he tried to compare the Philadelphia 76ers to the 2017 Warriors said they were better on paper. Kind of a bizarre set of social media interactions between those guys. I want to kind of dive into the comps between the Sixers and the Warriors. Talk a little bit about that 2017 Warriors team. Talk a little bit about the way that it is discussed. and Kevin Durant's kind of like hangups about that team because I do think they're fascinating.

All right, let's talk some basketball. So Kevin Durant has spent the last couple of days arguing online with folks about LeBron's move to Philadelphia and essentially making the comparison between that move and his move to Golden State. Now, this is, of course, completely ludicrous.

But I want to dig into this concept more because I do think it's fascinating. And just as a disclaimer up front, Kevin Durant's one of my favorite basketball players ever. I think he's a great role model for Hoopers all around the world, his work ethic. I think if there's one of the biggest gifts that Kevin Durant's given to basketball community is what his workouts look like. I think one of the biggest reasons why kids struggle to translate workout stuff to games is they don't go game speed. And if you watch a Kevin Durant workout, he attacks every single workout at game speed. I think there's a lot that he can give back to the basketball community just simply as an example. And I think also he just represents true love for the game, which I think is one of the most important pieces of a kid's success in the game.

game. So everything that happened with his move to Golden State, that doesn't really take away from that for me at all, even though I do find it a fascinating discussion. But Kevin Duran has always felt the need to defend his move to Golden State. And there's this debate. I saw, you know, Dremont talking about it on his pod, basically this idea that like Kevin Durant actually just kind of has this view of basketball. He used the phrase, Uncle Drew-ish, like he's just focused on things like points per game. And does KDC the game that way? Probably. And I do think that that's something that's worth discussing at some point. But I don't think that's why he's so defensive about Golden State. I think he's defensive about Golden State and making these comparisons to

Philly because he feels like he didn't get much credit for the success that he had in Golden State. He didn't get much credit from Warriors fans who view Steph Curry as the primary driver of that team success. And he didn't get much credit from like the basketball masses for his titles and his finals MVP's that he got in Golden State. If anybody out there actually thinks that this Philadelphia 76ers team is in the same stratosphere as that 2017 Warriors team was, we've clearly just too much time has gone by. We've forgotten what happened in that area. That Warriors team won 73 three games the year before. And we're about as close as you can possibly get to being repeat champions without

actually winning. They lost to a chase down block and a step back three pointer. Otherwise, they'd be repeat champs. After adding Kevin Durant that summer, the Warriors were the largest preseason title favorite in the history of the NBA. Some sports books before the season even started had them at minus. 150 to win the title. Meaning that if you bet $1 on the Warriors to win the title in October of 2016,

you would have received a payout of 66 cents when they hoisted the trophy. If you bet a dollar on the 76ers today to win the 2027 title, you'd get 14 times as much money in the payout. even if you bet on this year's favorite, that Spurs team with Victor Web and Yamu, damn near won the title last year, and all those young guys are going to get better. You'd get paid four times as much money

as you'd get paid betting on the 2017 Warriors to win the title. It was the most talented roster in the history of the NBA. There's no comp. Nothing comes close. They had the second best player in the world in Steph Curry. They had the third best player in the world in Kevin Durant, but it wasn't just that. They were called the Hamptons 5 for a reason.

They had perhaps the best defensive anchor in the world in Draymond Green. They had the second best shooter in the history of the league in Clay Thompson, who also happened to be an excellent perimeter defender in the NBA. And then Andre Guadala is probably the greatest wing defender of the 2010s, who is so valuable to what the Warriors do on both ends of the floor, as a primary defender to guard the other team's best player, but also as the guy that is just a connective playmaking talent for them on offense, he won't a finals MVP. He has a finals MVP trophy at his house.

And he was the fifth guy in that lineup. If I even tried to create a comp in the modern NBA, it wouldn't even make sense. For starters, imagine if Luca Donchich and Shea Gildas Alexander were on the same team. But the other three guys in their closing five were Alex Caruso, Rudy Gobert and O.G. Annanobi. Hell, okay, see, has a version of this with Shea, Chet, and Alex Cruz are right now, and we consider them to be tied with San Antonio for the most talented roster in the league today. Just imagine adding Luca Donchich and OG An Anobi to this year's Thunder team.

That's what the 2017 Warriors were working with. That's why they were such massive favorites in that era. and it's why it required basically a complete physical breakdown of the team for them to miss out on a three-peat. And they still were a Steph Curry three-pointer away from forcing a game seven. I've said this time and time again over the years. The amount of respect and admiration that a player gets for their success at the highest levels of basketball

is directly proportional to the amount of difficulty and adversity they overcome in the pursuit. This is true for every single player and every single championship won. LeBron gets more credit for his win in 2016 than he does for the other three titles combined. Steph Curry gets more credit for his 2022 title than his other three titles combined. It's the struggle that resonates with fans. I said it a few times during the playoffs this year. Like there's nothing in all of sports like the moments where a single single.

supremely gifted basketball player digs deep within himself and completely takes over a game against impossible odds. That game won Wemby performance against O KC this year, what did it feel like watching that? How did it resonate with you compared to Kevin Durant winning 15 straight playoff games with the Warriors in 2017? There was something kind of empty about K. KD's success in Golden State. Not that it wasn't impressive or anything like that. Like predictably, considering the advantages and insane spacing that Golden State provided, KG was, or KD was surgically efficient in those playoff runs. In KD's last three playoff runs with OKC, he logged a 56% true shooting percentage.

In the three playoff runs with Golden State, he logged a 64% true shooting percentage. his true shooting percentage didn't skyrocket by eight points because KD got way better at basketball. It skyrocketed by eight percentage points because the basketball was just much easier for it. I vividly remember countless uncontested dunks for KD in that series. Driving closeouts off of skip passes when LeBron is like in the paint helping on a Steph Curry action on the strong side of the floor, or him going right down the middle of the lane in transition. because Cavs defenders are spraying out to Clay or Steph trailing on the wings. It showed clearly in the numbers, too.

His unguarded catch and shoot three point attempts and his dunks both almost doubled per game from the 2016 playoffs to the 2017 playoffs. In the 2016 playoffs with OKC, 78% of KD's catch and shoot threes were contested. As a result, he made just 34% of them. In the 2017 playoffs, only 63% of his catch and shoot looks were contested. And so as a result, he shot 45% on them. A Kevin Durant, ISO, post-up, or ball screen in the 2017 playoffs with Golden State, was worth 1.2 points per possession, including passes.

In 2016 with the Thunder, they were worth less than 0.0.4.5.2 points per possession, including passes. nine points per possession, including passes. And his volume, the number of times he had to do it, was nearly double because he had so much more responsibility on offense with the 2016 Thunder. In 2017, when Kevin Arant took a rest in the playoffs with the Warriors, the Warriors had a plus 15.4 net rating. They grew the lead massively every time he stepped off the floor. So we didn't have that advantage. And look, I'm not like, I've talked about this all the time when we talk about the flaws in data. This is why I think data is so flawed.

it's not like Kevin Durant went from 0.9 points to 1.2 points per shot creation possession because he just got magically so much better when he went to the 2017 Warriors. It's surrounding circumstances. It's the difference between having Andre Roberson in the corner

versus Clay Thompson. It's the difference between having Steph Curry instead of Russell Westbrook, right? It is the difference between being surrounded by the most talented roster in NBA history a team that already had a 70 plus win infrastructure before you showed up

and that very talented but flawed OKC roster. And again, I'm not trying to sit here and say one, like the data from OKC was also flawed because of the fact that the team was so bad at spacing the floor for him. The reality with KD has always been somewhere in the middle, right? a lot easier than it looked in OKC, a lot tougher than it looked in Golden State. And I have never begrudged KD

for wanting to leave OKC and create a better basketball situation for himself. But he had to know that when he decided to go there to the 73 win warriors, that had just beat him, that it would come with a certain connotation that was different than if he had tried to build

something else or go somewhere else. Katie's run with the Warriors felt empty for fans because we already knew he was awesome. But instead of getting the payoff, the massive like, oh man, he finally

overcame adversity in the NBA playoffs and hoisted the trophy. Instead of getting that type of moment, instead we watched everything look way too easy for him as his team just racked up 15 straight playoff wins and back-to-back titles. He signed as a free agent in the absolute heart of his prime, thanks to a loophole in the CBA that led to a

cap spike, a unique circumstance that probably won't ever happen again, with the very team that just eliminated him in the playoffs, and that team was one block in one shot away from repeating his champions the year before without it. He should have known that his success there would not have resonated with people the way he wanted it to. He wasn't the first player to ever try this sort of thing. I don't, again, like, I think there's a unique balance in these sorts of situations when you're trying to improve your circumstances in the NBA and you want respect and you want admiration. You want to give yourself a position where you feel like you can compete, but you don't want to just, you know, go to a situation where it's going to look so easy that you

don't get the credit. That's the fine line. But people have tried to stack their championship odds before. I said LeBron tried to do. LeBron literally tried to do this in 2010. Not quite as tacky as joining the team that just beat you, but LeBron really was trying to make his pursuit of a championship much easier. He didn't say not five, not six, not seven, because he felt like just a small tweak in his circumstance was going to unlock. He said that because he thought, oh, I'm just going to stack my team will win every chip. That's why he said that. But what ended up happening when LeBron went to Miami was very different. For starters, the team wasn't nearly as deep as the Warriors.

Like, they didn't have a Clay Iguodala, Draymond infrastructure to put Dwayne Wade and LeBron James around. Their stars also broke down. Like Chris Bosch got hurt in the 2012 playoffs, which led to great adversity against the Pacers and against the Celtics. The heat trailed in both of those series. And then Dwayne Wade was never the same after 2012 when his knee kind of fell apart. So, like, LeBron might have said not five, not six, not seven, but the reality as we watched it was a fucking struggle.

And they needed absolutely heroic performances from LeBron to win both titles. Game six in Boston down three, two, thirty points and a half to save the season. Game six of the 2013 finals down double digits with facing elimination in that crazy fourth quarter he had that helped force overtime. the insane game seven performance with the five threes and the late jump shots that iced the series. LeBron gets more credit for those two titles because they looked difficult and he had to be amazing to push them over the top. When LeBron designed the team, he thought it would be a lot easier. And had they just ripped off four straight titles and one 15 straight playoff games and

just generally cruise to success, I'd argue even though he'd have more. titles, he wouldn't be viewed the same. We wouldn't have given LeBron much credit because we would have watched what happened in Cleveland and then watched what happened in Miami and been like, ah, that just feels cheap. Instead of getting to see the, the LeBron finally getting over the top

and the coronation that comes with it, it would have felt like skipping steps. Skipping steps on that pathway to greatness. For the record, Steph had to go through the same process. Remember the way Steph was discussed in 2020 and in 2021. Everyone was talking about how it's going to be different for him now. His own peers like Damien Lillard were saying things about him.

Steph was really good. Amazing, actually, in those back-to-back championship years in 2017 and 2018. But no one was giving him credit for it. Because he lost to LeBron when LeBron had his teammates at full strength. And then he won after the deck was completely stacked in his favor. So no one was running a lot of, outside of Warriors fans, Warriors fans have always, you know, put Steph, like above LeBron and, you know, in the goat conversation, like, Warriors fans love Steph. But outside of Warriors fans, like, no one was really

giving Steph that much credit. When he won in 2022, with less talent around him, overcoming adversity, with a signature moment in game four in Boston that saved their season, Steph's global reputation was never the same after that. No one will ever disrespect Steph Curry's name. or try to undercut his success as ever again. That is the process of achieving the respect from the basketball masses when it comes to success at the highest levels of the NBA. As for this Philly team, the way that it'll be remembered entirely depends on what it looks like.

As it pertains to LeBron's legacy, like if the Sixers win the title, but like LeBron is just another piece and the talent level is clearly just overwhelming their purpose. opponents and it's clear that LeBron didn't really have to be great for them to win. It's not going to move the needle much when he gets a fifth title. But if they win and it looks hard and LeBron is front and center on both ends of the floor as a vital cog in the system. And he has like a massive game in a big series like game seven against the Knicks and Madison Square Garden.

He has like 17 points in the fourth quarter to send him to the finals and he guards one. M. B in the finals and is like instrumental to a championship win, it'd be a massive ad to his legacy. People might even change their minds around about it. So again, in summation, like this Sixers team is very talented on paper. But to Katie's point, even though there are some impressive resumes on there, right, like Katie called it out. I go, Joel Embed's an MVP, LeBron. Yeah, Jalen Brown finals MVP, LeBron four finals MVP and four MVPs. Joel and Bede regular season MVP, right? Like they've got a lot of like impressive resumes in there. Jaylon Brown is super talented, but is generally regarded as flawed and tough to fit with other players. That's why he got traded. for such a cheap price this offseason. And Tyrese Maxie's really talented, really talented up-and-coming guard, but he's a third-team all-MBA guy, not prime Steph Curry. I would argue the Sixers actually need to become greater than the sum of their parts to have a chance to win the title.

They need to maximize each other to have any shot. I do think it's worth mentioning that the Sixers group does have on-paper talent. I'm not undercutting the fact that this is a talented roster or that LeBron shows the roster for talent. He certainly did. The potential's off the charts. Raw talent is a strength for this roster. But no, it's not the same as the 2017 Warriors, not even close. We'll never see anything like that again. The talent on the roster, unprecedented, the move from KD to the team that beat him to a team that had already won a title and almost won a second one.

That is such a unique set of circumstances and it'll never be that way again. and the way KD is behaving on social media right now is a reflection of the way he feels like he didn't get credit. It is a defense of his move when it was indefensible at the time. Indefensible in the sense that, again, he has the right to do whatever he wants. That Warriors team was fun to watch.

I enjoyed watching the KD Warriors. They played a fun. brand of basketball. But ultimately, if Katie's goal, because again, the way he's acting is a reflection of the fact that he feels like he's underappreciated and that he doesn't get the credit that he deserves. But if he wanted credit in appreciation, that wasn't the move to make. And the reason it rings hollow for fans and the reason he doesn't get credit and appreciation for those years is because it just looked easy.

watching him dribble right down the lane and throw down uncontested dunks in the NBA finals doesn't resonate the way that him hitting a turnaround fadeaway jump shot to force overtime against the bucks in game seven of the second round of 2021 resonated with fans. I'd argue KD's stock as a basketball player went up more from his 2021 playoff run where he was a toe on the line away from a potential finals run and maybe a championship on a flawed roster. He gained more with fans then than he did hitting game icing jump shots

in the NBA finals. Or hosting the finals MVP trophy twice. Again, like I, that whole era is really weird to look back at because, you know, I remember at the time, there was this kind of like attempt on both camps. Like the Warriors camp

was trying to elevate Steph Curry over LeBron and the, I say, Warriors Camp, Warriors fans. We're like trying to elevate Steph Curry over LeBron and all the LeBron haters and just a good chunk of like the national masses were like trying to elevate KD over LeBron.

Remember that was the narrative? It was like, oh, KD outplayed LeBron in the 2017 finals. And it's like, I just can't even imagine a scenario now where like Victor Wembenyama loses a playoff series to Luca Donchich and Shea Gildes Alexander or Nicola Yokic and Shea Gildas Alexander

and we go, yeah, that's evidence. They're better, like one of these guys is better than Wembe. It was a really bizarre era of NBA basketball because the East was really weak. So even though that Kaz team was like great, but not like all time great, they were just cruising through the East every year. And then you had this absurdly talented Golden State Warriors roster

and they played each other every year in the finals and the Cavs never had a shot in 2017 or 2018. They never had a shot. And it was just kind of a weird, it was just kind of a weird era, you know? And like, again, like I, when I look back at it,

I just, I hope people understand like what happened was so unprecedented. It was so unusual. We will never see anything like that again. I'd even, LeBron's situation is unprecedented. in the way that he had a vet minimum contract offering to these teams as opposed to something more difficult to fit in the cap. And even then,

he wasn't able to come close to accumulating the amount of talent that the 2017 Warriors did. It just was, it just was unprecedented and unusual. And again, like, I think the best thing that KD can do now is focus on trying to get that moment, get the 2022 Steph moment, get the 2016 LeBron moment, find a way to win a championship

or to go on a playoff run where you show everybody what you're capable of when things are tough, when things are hard. Like, unfortunately, like, if he's seeking credit for that 2017-2018 run,

he's just going to have a hard time getting the type of credit. It's not even like it's not credit. It's just not the same type of credit as even what Jalen Brunson just did with the Knicks. Like, it's just, we've just seen a lot of guys hoist that finals MVP trophy, and it never felt quite as empty as when Kevin Durant held up his.
