This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Two big weeks left, regular season, Greg CoSell in one hour.
If you play fantasy football, if you bet on football,
if you just love football, want to get smarter, Greg CoSell, 42 years,
NFL films. What does the film say about what is happening? Joy Taylor is joining me today.
No more Thursday night football. So we gear up now on some bowl games.
Rose Bowl's coming up, Michigan, Georgia coming up, Alabama, Cincinnati, and huge NFL weekends.
Our playoffs, believe it or not, are not set in stone. We've got a lot of changes that can happen over the next 72 hours.
Far, far from it. There's very few that are locked up. This is a huge, huge weekend coming.
coming up for a playoff.
Yeah.
So do you know what sonar waves are?
You've heard of sonar waves from a submarine.
So a submarine will send out sonar waves.
And they do that so they don't hit another submarine or an iceberg or whatever you'd hit.
Okay?
So a submarine sends out those sonar waves and just to make sure you don't run into anything.
So Aaron Rogers right now is sending out soon R waves.
very soon there'll be a decision on his career,
and he doesn't want to hit the Browns or the Carolina Panthers
or the Washington football team with his great brand.
So Aaron did this again.
He did it again.
Aaron's a smart guy.
He does not have a no trade clause.
There's only eight players in the entire national football league
that have a no trade clause and only three quarterbacks.
Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, and Mahomes.
They can say, I'm not going there.
Aaron doesn't have that.
And Aaron Rogers knows that.
So what do you do?
What do you do?
You send out your sunar waves.
Just to let you know all you crappy organizations,
you try to get me, I'll quit.
So once again, second time did it right before the season, doing it again.
Aaron sent out his sunar waves in regards to his retirement.
You sounded to me like a guy that you're dead.
definitely not going to retire after this season.
You're going to play next year.
It's a question of whether it's here or somewhere else.
Is that also accurate?
Yeah, well, thanks for let me clarify that.
I don't, I wouldn't rule that out.
It won't be something where I'll drag it out for months and months,
you know, have conversations with my loved ones after the season,
with Brian and Mark and Russ and coaching staff and, and then make a decision at
some point, you know, I'm not going to hold the team back from anything.
and once I commit and if it's committing to move forward here,
it'll be a quick decision.
There's zero chance he retires.
He's not retiring.
Zero chance.
But the discussion, and that's not a threat,
you notice how he says it nicely.
The discussion of retirement lets all the second tier franchises know,
I will retire.
I will not go and be a member of the Washington football team
in their chaos, Carolina and their chaos, Cleveland and their chaos.
And Cleveland's got a good roster, but it's too much chaos.
Aaron's brand is better than Cleveland's, right?
You're not going there.
And I'm not saying Cleveland's going to be looking for him.
But that's what he's doing here.
He's sending out the waves.
You know, they always say people have emotional affairs before they have physical affairs.
You send out messaging.
I'm available.
So, you know, Aaron's coming across like, hey, I've got total control on this.
Aaron's way too smart for this.
He doesn't have any control.
He could be traded to anywhere in the league.
Green Bay is not going to trade him because Jordan Love can't play.
We'll get into that later.
But this is just what players do.
I always laugh when guys say, hey, I control this marriage.
I make the calls.
And I'm like, she could leave you tomorrow and get half of everything.
At most, you have 50% control or power if that matters to you in your marriage.
Aaron knows.
And this is one of the things I've said for years.
The franchise tag is anti-quarterback.
If you're a tight end or a safety, the franchise tag is your friend.
you don't even have to get a new contract
and you can be paid one of the top five guys at your position.
But if you're Aaron Rogers or Patrick Mahomes,
the franchise tag is your enemy.
You should be the highest paid person or second highest paid person
and a franchise can just keep doing it and not commit long term.
So quarterbacks really don't have any power in this league.
They really don't.
Unless they have, the most they can have is a no trade clause.
Or the way Tom Brady did it after 20 years,
he finally got getaway power.
But what Aaron is doing, he's sending out messages.
My job is to provide some clarity.
He's sending out messages to all the bad teams in this league.
Denver, he'd go.
Pittsburgh, he'd go.
But the bad brands, sunar waves.
I'm not putting my submarine banging into your big iceberg.
I got no interest hooking up my great submarine to your crappy ship.
I'm not letting it happen.
Because Aaron knows he got no power.
Oh, it's time for another edition.
I can't believe what Russell Westbrook did,
even though there's 13 years of evidence of what Russell Westbrook is.
So last night the Lakers lost to a very young, exciting, fun team.
Memphis, fun team.
And Russell Westbrook at the end of the game, you know, he did what he can often do.
He screwed up.
Russell Westbrook, you know, he missed a layup with a couple of minutes left.
playing kind of out of control.
It looked like a gimmy.
And then he kind of confused the Lakers on a final possession.
And LeBron was confused.
And the Lakers, he did not play well at the end of the game.
And that's because, as we've said for years, at least I have,
he doesn't play well at the end of the game.
He's a bull in a China shop.
He's a stat patter.
But we all know what he is, so stop blaming him.
Don't put him in positions to succeed because end of game refinement is not what he is.
And years and years ago,
And last night was just a great example late in games.
He's in the wrong spot.
He's confusing LeBron.
He misses a layup.
It's just what he is.
Last night is a great example of why I laughed at the most valuable player award.
He got it because of the triple double.
And I said, I'm not saying triple doubles are always bad,
but they don't have nearly as much value as you think they do.
I don't want my guard getting 12 rebounds a game.
I want him up the floor.
I want the bigs getting the rebound and outletting it to him.
so Westbrook isn't under the basket and has to bob and weave down the floor.
But a great example of this is assists.
So to get a triple double, Westbrook's going to get points because he's talented,
and he patted his rebound stats.
But his assist stats are true.
He does end up with lots of assists.
But here's a great example of how flawed stats can be.
For instance, Matt Ryan is eighth all-time in NFL passing yards.
Do you think Matt Ryan is the eighth best quarter?
quarterback. Joe Flacko's 19th. He's not a top 100 quarterback. So here's the all-time
top 12 assist list. Now, I did not see Oscar Roberts in play, so I have no opinion on number
seven. But when I say John Stockton, what do you think? Passer. When I say Jason Kidd,
Jason Kidd couldn't shoot his first 12 years in the league. You think passer. By the way,
I saw Jason Kidd play in high school. He was a great passer then. Chris Paul, distributor. Steve Nash,
Mark Jackson, Magic Johnson.
Even LeBron James, we've said for years.
You can argue he's more passer than score.
He's just so damn talented.
Isaiah Thomas, Gary Payton, Andre Miller.
Now, Peyton's brand was defense, but it wasn't scoring.
It was defense, scoring, and assisting.
Andre Miller.
Do you remember Andre Miller?
I do kind of a bigger guard, a little heavy, kind of shuffled.
Was never a great score.
Great passer.
And then there's Westbrook at 12.
you've never once in your life said Westbrook is an elite passer.
So how does he end up on that list?
Because he's second all time in the history of this sport to Michael Jordan in ball usage.
He always has the ball.
Don't confuse longevity or activity with that guy's a great passer.
That's why the triple double was nonsense.
Westbrook should average 25 a game.
over the course of a regular season,
he's got the ball in his hands,
he's wildly athletic, he can fly past people,
he can finish at the rim.
I have no problem with him being a Hall of Famer,
being an All-Star, he's a great score.
But nobody thinks all-time rebounders, Westbrook,
and certainly even as a guard,
nobody thinks of him as an all-time assist guy.
When I give you the list of the top 12 assist people,
all of them, again, I don't count Oscar,
I didn't watch him play.
The other 10, 10,
I think of them.
I mean, as great as I say it Thomas was.
I think of that Pistons team.
I think of the ball.
He was getting the ball to Joe Dumars and Vinnie Johnson and Bill Lambere.
Westbrook's the one you're like, that doesn't really fit.
It doesn't fit because he's never been an assist guy.
He just has the ball in his hands so much.
So I've been defending Westbrook over the last couple of weeks.
I thought he was a good addition to the Lakers because he would just add productivity.
And it's an old roster.
And old rosters get hurt.
LeBron's already been dinged up.
A.D. is hurt.
I mean, Malik Monk's about the only young player they like.
So he was a great addition.
He can give you minutes.
He can give you production.
I don't want him, as I said, when he got here, near the ball late in games.
That's one of the reasons LeBron and Westbrook are struggling.
They both need the ball.
The difference is LeBron's great with the ball late.
Westbrook's not.
And they both really need it.
So as everybody's complaining, second day in a row, I've said this.
As we're all complaining about Westbrook,
you're putting him in positions to be what he's not.
Earlier in the year, there's a story.
He's not screening like we thought he would.
That's not what he does.
He's really not shooting like that's not what he does.
And then last night, boy, he's terrible late.
That's what he is, 13 years of data.
So this is not a knock on Westbrook.
It is an acknowledgement of 13 years of data.
The Lakers traded for him.
And now all I hear is people going nuts in L.A.
banging on Westbrook and he doesn't do this and he doesn't do that.
Folks, Matt Ryan's not mobile.
Eighth all time and total yards.
You don't think he's mobile.
You don't think he's top eight.
It's a longevity number.
Flacko's got a longevity number.
Westbrook with a lot of his stats, a longevity number.
But don't ask somebody to be refined.
It's not their game.
And I've got evidence.
I've got a resume.
I've got videotape.
I've got YouTube.
I can tell you over and over and over.
So last night everybody's like, I can't believe this.
How can you not believe it?
That's a you problem.
That's not a Westbrook problem.
All over social media.
This is outrageous.
Have you paid attention?
I mean, I know I have to watch more games than you because it's what I do for a living.
But it's funny now, I'm hearing all these Westbrook trade rumors.
As I said when he got here, yes, I'm patting myself in the back.
Don't ask him to close games out for you.
Ask for 36 minutes and 22 points and hustle.
He is great at that.
And that has huge value on a rickety old roster.
But suddenly now Laker fans, and by the way, after the game, LeBron James commented about that turnover late.
Here's LeBron.
There's between careless turnovers and attack turnovers, and we got to cut down on our careless turnovers.
The ones that's just unforced, you know, we're going to have attack turnover, which is okay.
We have a lot of attackers and we understand that.
But, you know, the careless turnovers where literally you just turn the ball off.
and there's no pressure or there's no reason for it.
Those are the ones that get us in trouble.
Exactly.
And that's why the Lakers front office wanted to keep Alex Caruso and go attain,
but he healed.
And LeBron wanted Westbrook.
And now he's not happy because there's a lot of turnovers laid in games.
And that's exactly what you get with Russell Westbrook.
This is where you come in America to defend Russell Westbrook, this show.
I am now the defender.
I've pivoted to defending Russell Westbrook.
What I'm pivoting to is stop asking people to do stuff they're not.
Stop it.
Stop it.
That's not what they do.
You can't ask Matt Ryan to run around.
It's not what he does.
Stop.
Stop asking Westbrook to be refined in a great shooter and do this and that latent games.
It's not what he does.
All right.
So Lamar Jackson.
I saw a video Lamar Jackson yesterday.
He's limping.
Not good.
You know, I think I had Baltimore winning that division or being a playoff team.
Baltimore, Arizona, I think, is going to pivot and get it right back.
Baltimore, they're just falling apart physically, and now Lamar's falling apart,
and the video's not good, more about that in the second.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It Podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks.
I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Now you're finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it,
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

So Lamar Jackson, I saw a picture of him yesterday on the end.
interweb. He's limping around. It does not look great. And, listen,
he, he, Tyler Huntley did a great job. Excellent. But Lamar doesn't look good.
And this team's going to go as far as Lamar is going to take him. Okay. He's their
spectacular athlete. He is the centerpiece of everything they do offensively. And he hasn't
been right. So as you've said, as we've said, as we've all discussed, I like my
quarterbacks to have the ability to escape. Brady's not a runner, but he moves.
who's very good side to side within a pocket, so did Drew Breeze.
There's different mobility can mean a lot of different things.
Not everybody's going to be Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson.
But if you look at the quarterbacks right now that have been hurt so far this year,
Zach Wilson likes to run.
Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields, Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, Jalen Hertz,
Kyler Murray.
They're either smaller physical guys.
This is a big man's league or they move a lot.
I mean, Daniel Jones, the Giants have him moving a lot.
Carson Wentz has played, but he's been dinged up this year.
He runs.
He can be reckless.
Sam Darnold.
Heard again.
Heard in New York.
Runs can be reckless.
So Trey Lance, by the way, got one start, ran 16 times, and he got hurt.
Baker Mayfield, smaller athlete, got hurt.
Tua, Monday night football.
He's not a runaround guy.
Just see what happened when Tua ran out of the pocket one time?
He got whacked.
And by the way, you could say, what about Josh Allen?
Who is the prototype I've always had for Josh Allen?
Big Ben and Cam Newton.
Oh, you saw it by year 7 and 8.
You saw how Ben is aging.
You've seen how Cam has aged.
That's going to be Josh Allen.
I don't care that he's 6-6-258.
You cannot get hit in this league over and over and over.
So the guys that didn't miss starts are Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers and Tom Brady and Eli
Manning.
So once again, and this is why I talk about this when it comes to quarterbacks.
I like my quarterbacks big.
I like him to stay in the pocket,
and I like to have them,
Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes,
the ability to escape,
but if you notice Patrick Mahomes,
big, thick, trunkey athletes,
six three, six three and a half.
He's 230 pounds.
I sat next to him once in a fight.
Patrick Mahomes, a big person.
Justin Herbert, big person.
Now, they're not as big as Josh Allen,
but this is why size matters.
I said when Kyler Murray came out,
second year in a row, he's been hurt.
I said, I know he's spectacular.
He can absolutely play.
He's remarkable.
The second year in a row, he's not right physically.
So, you know, you start looking around these quarterbacks.
I understand, you know, the Lamar's and the Kiders.
And I'm the first to defend Lamar.
I think he's spectacular.
But you're looking now.
The seasons longer.
Athletes are faster.
Look who's hurt.
It's the bakers.
It's the Kylers.
It's the smaller guys.
Or it's the guys that run around a lot.
It is.
And you don't think to yourself, well, well, Daniel Jones.
No, Daniel Jones moves a lot.
Daniel's running a lot.
actually Alex Smith. He's got great,
great straight line speed
for a quarterback.
So be very careful.
Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, the Steelers' final home game of the year
is this Monday night against the Browns.
And Ben Mothesberger said he knows
this could be, could be
his last game at Heinzfield.
I don't ever speak in definites or guarantee.
That's just not what I've ever done or who I am.
But, you know, looking at the bigger picture,
I would say that all signs are pointed to this.
This could be it.
Regular season, that is.
I know we still have a chance to potentially get a playoff game there
if things fall our way and we take care of business
and things have to happen.
But in the grand scheme of things,
in terms of regular seasons, signs are pointing that way.
this could be it.
Yeah.
Yeah, Cleveland's a much better football team,
but it's interesting with Ben, Joy, we've watched this.
He will play awful football,
and the next week he'll come in and play well.
So my guess is you're going to get one last hurrah
from Ben at home.
Oh, yeah, I think you're going to get everything, Ben Scott.
You're going to get, so it's going to be the Kobe thing.
It's the last game.
He might throw it 75 times.
That's right.
So otherwise, I would absolutely take Cleveland's
got the better roster right now. They're the better team. They're more complete.
Well, but I just, this game is interesting because my gut feeling is I've seen it so many times in
my life. We bury all these guys and they always have one game left.
And it's, you know, it's a lot of emotion. All the other guys and the team are fully aware
that this could be Ben's last game at home. Like the Steelers are, they're going to get up
for this game regardless because as Ben mentioned, the division is still wide open.
And they were humiliated last weekend. So this, this is a game that I expect the Steelers to play
their most focused football.
How the game will ends, we'll see,
because obviously the Browns have a lot to play for as well,
and they do have the better roster
despite the way that Baker has been playing.
But just listening to him talk,
I always get a little emotional
when it comes to like the retirement thing.
Now, I'm decades away from retiring.
Well, maybe not.
We'll see.
See how things play out the future.
But, you know, I don't plan on retiring anytime soon.
But I did watch my brother retired, did watch him play his last game.
I did have that conversation with him about, you know, is this your last season?
And what are you thinking?
And what are you feeling?
Emotional.
What do you want to do?
And how do you feel about this decision?
And it is emotional because when we talk about professional athletes retiring, retiring,
it's so much bigger than just like, okay, I'm going to move on into the next phase of my life.
Like, if you are at the top of your sport, you've poured.
everything you have is a human in existence into being this.
And then you have to transition.
Even if you have all the money in the world, you never have to work again.
You have to transition into a life that is completely different.
The routine is different.
How you eat is different.
Where you, when you travel is different.
Like everything is about to change.
And you're in the middle of your life.
You're not old.
You're not like an old person.
Yeah.
So it's such a crazy dynamic.
to process when you're leaving
something that you've done, not
just, you know, woke up and went to
work. Like you put your whole body
and spirit and your family and everything
into it. And then you just like,
one day it's just over.
Yeah. Well, it's different
to, uh, athletes
are so separate from us. Like if I
retire, you retire, we go to the grocery store.
We're not hounded. Right. We live
a very, we got to go to the DMV.
We drive to work. I drove
through a tsunami this morning. And the
reign in Los Angeles now is it's biblical.
So, but athletes live in this very, it's almost the royal family of America's professional
athletes, especially quarterback. So you just become a guy. Like, I mean, you have a nice
country club membership, but, you know, you're, you know. People know who you are, but it's a,
it's just a different, it's so, so, so different. And mostly when we think about retiring,
we think of being old and retiring, like being an actual old person. Like Ben's not old. He's just
football. So it's just
it always makes me like think
about that transition
and what that would feel like because
I've seen it but also like you can see it in his
eyes like that is a lot
to process being a man
in that arena and the place
that you've poured your whole spirit
into for 18 seasons.
Well the Browns are favored by three and a half
I would love the Steelers there
three and a half according to Fox Bed
but that's a lot of emotion.
So Pittsburgh's getting three and a half. Yeah.
I think the hooks on Pittsburgh side, so you'd take Pittsburgh in that game.
But I got to tell you something, I go back to this.
Cleveland had four picks and was driving to beat, was driving to beat Green Bay at Lambo.
I was so impressed with Cleveland.
I just thought it's just, listen, I don't want to pick on you know who.
But it was like they were getting nine yards of carry.
I was impressed with their running game.
Oh, my God.
Cleveland, I'm going to tell you something.
Cleveland's defense for the last six weeks has been fantastic.
I mean, Aaron Rogers' second half didn't do anything.
And that's getting field position with picks.
It tells you how good that roster is that they threw four interceptions and we're still
right there in that game with the Packers.
So Jimmy Garapolo will not need surgery to repair his injured right thumb.
Apparently when he tore the ligament, a piece of the bone came off to.
Like, we just gloss over these injuries.
Like a piece of her bone came off when tore a ligament off of his thumb.
And he might still play.
So he may still play against the Texans on Sunday.
said he's confident he can play through the injury and
Kyle Shanahan is hopeful that he'll be able to
rejoin practice today. Before Wednesday's
practice, Gropolo threw under the
supervision of the team's training staff
but he was seen walking up the field before the workout
began and was officially listed as a non-participant
so they're waiting to find out today if he's going to be
available. They're getting 12 and a half against
the Texans, according to Foxx bet
this weekend, but you're going to have to watch that up
into the minute. We'll see if he's able to practice
today and then they'll decide that.
So Aaron Rogers has been weighing his future with the Packers
and in the NFL, but so is Devon
who will be a free agent after this season.
Interesting.
So Adams was asked if his future in Green Bay would be connected to Rogers and he admitted
that that decision by Aaron Rogers will be something he considers.
I mean naturally, why wouldn't it?
You know, it's not, you know, I'm playing with the best quarterback to play the game.
It won't be the end-all be-all, but it'll definitely be something that I'm monitoring and
paying attention to.
Obviously I love being a Packer and love, love being here.
So, you know, we'll see how everything plays.
out, but to a certain extent, I will be connected to 12.
But, you know, it's just not like if he goes, I'm not going to be here.
Or if he stays, I will, you know, but it's something that we'll have to pay attention to for sure.
Yeah.
This is why everyone keeps talking about, like, all the pieces that they have in Green Bay.
Like, Devante Adams is a free agent.
Devante may just decide after this year, even if Aaron Rogers stays, like, I don't want to live
in Green Bay anymore.
I'm a top receiver in the league.
Plenty of options.
So this is not just as clear cut as everyone is making it seem when it comes to Aaron Rogers leaving.
Again, I think it's the best place for Aaron Rogers.
But remember, too, Aaron's a huge cap hit.
So can you have the most expensive wide receiver in the league and the most expensive or second most expensive cap hit as quarterback?
Then you're absolutely going to have to make tough decisions on the defensive side.
So that's a really interesting.
I mean, I've said before, one of the reasons Russell Wilson and his team,
is going over the cliff is he's the number one cap hit in the league.
He's massively expensive.
Yeah. Mahomes is not.
Brady is not.
So there's no, and as great as Aaron is.
I think he's the second biggest cap hit.
So if you then had your top wide receiver,
you know how good Bobby Wagner is with the Seahawks.
I've been saying it for now three months.
You've got to move Bobby Wagner.
You can't pay Russell and Dwayne Brown and Jamal Adams and Bobby.
You can't.
You got to get draft picks.
So you need to have some high level young talent that is cheaper.
Like, that's the balance that you have.
If I was Devonte, would you, if you were Devante Adams, would you take, like I think to my, I never tell athletes to take less money.
But there are moments here for Devante Adams.
I wouldn't need to be the number one paid guy in the league.
Like I said this with D. Wade for years.
You got drafted by Pat Riley, so you were always getting better players around you.
You're in a state with no state tax, Florida.
So if I was DeWain Wade, I would have considered that saying, listen, I'm not paying taxes.
I'm not losing 12% like the California.
California athletes.
Right.
And I also have Pat Riley and Eric Spolstra.
So I do think about as Devante Adams.
I would consider Matt Lafleur, Aaron Rogers.
Holmes cost nothing.
Quality of life at some point in your career does become a conversation.
Like you obviously want to make as much money as you possibly can.
But you have to look at the long-term situation as well.
Like, how much money am I going to make after the NFL based off of the legacy that I build now
if I just take a short-term bag, so to speak.
I tell young broadcasters, money can be a passenger.
It can't drive the car.
No.
But it needs to be in the car.
Right.
There's just certain businesses where that's just how it is.
And in a salary cap league, that's what you're dealing with.
But this is a Mante Adams situation is something to pay attention to.
And remember, they're the ones that posted the last dance photo at the beginning of the season.
So they have a very close relationship and could be.
lockstep in what their decisions are moving into the off season.
Good stuff, Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The herd lie news.
You know, I was thinking about this about Aaron Rogers.
So Aaron, Aaron got a 36 in his wonder lick.
He's a bright guy.
He's articulate.
You know, I mean, he's a good talker.
Kind of ethereal.
He's complex.
And, you know, Aaron goes on.
a YouTube channel, Pat McAfee every week, and he talks, and he talks a lot about COVID.
And, you know, the media now, you know, gets very mad at him.
And, you know, Aaron had this quote.
He said, like, if we can't discuss this stuff and disagree, what's the point?
Now, I tend to be Mr. Wear a Mask.
You know, I'm vaccinated.
I just got my booster.
But it is interesting to watch the turn by the media.
Aaron's become a heel, a wrestling heel.
to a lot of people in the media.
And I don't think he cares.
I really don't.
I think athletes live in a tunnel.
They hang out with other athletes.
They got their beach houses in Malibu,
and I don't think they care.
But it's been fascinating to watch the...
He's become a little bit of a heel in the media.
And to that, I would say to all the members of the media,
why are you holding him...
I mean, we're all naming our pets and our kids after athletes
and wearing their jerseys and waiting in line to get autographs.
They don't relate to us.
Why would they?
I mean, if somebody named pets after you and waited for hours for an autograph
or freaked out if they saw you at a restaurant,
you wouldn't think you were one of the people either.
That's what you treat athletes like they're the royal family in England.
My mom was British.
I used to ask her about the royal family.
She said, well, they're weird.
All people in royal families are weird because they're not normalized like the rest of us.
They don't go to the DMV.
So, like, the media is like, I can't believe Aaron doesn't think.
think like this and think like this.
He doesn't think like you.
Why would he?
You wait in line for his autograph.
You treat him like a superstar.
He dates Hollywood stars.
He lives in a $35 million home in Malibu.
He is not among us.
So maybe athletes don't think like us and aren't relatable like us.
And don't worry about the stuff, the sick grandma, that we do.
Just saying, you know, you treat somebody some way and they think one way.
And then you're outraged.
They don't think like you and relate to you and are concerned with you.
You wait in line for somebody's autograph for hours.
Maybe they do think they're above us.
You know what I'm saying?
Gerald McCoy never thinks he's above us.
He's on this show whenever we ask.
The former cowboy, the former buck, the current raider.
I'm out here defending Aaron Rogers.
What's happened to me?
Hey, by the way, congratulations to the Sooners last night.
I watched the entire game.
Bob Stoops, you got to give Bob Stoops credit.
The program was Lincoln Riley left.
that was kind of freaking out and swimming in those murky waters.
So what was your takeaway as a sooner?
Lincoln Riley leaving and Bob Stoop stepping in last night.
What did you think is a sooner?
First off, thanks for having me.
I miss my family.
You know, my distant cousins, Colin, joy.
Obviously, I don't think I'm above you guys.
We're family.
That's right.
We're just distant family, but we're always family.
So I thank you for having me.
And secondly, I mean, this is Oklahoma.
They've been Oklahoma.
They are Oklahoma, and they will be Oklahoma.
Oklahoma's bigger than any player or coach that's ever been there.
And, you know, it showed last night.
Coach Stoops just stepped in.
And, you know, to me, he's my favorite coach of all time.
Just the man he is, what he represents, being selfless, and just his football IQ.
You know, he loves the game of football, and he does whatever for their university.
and I love Coach Stoops.
He very deservingly
gotten to the
College Football Hall of Fame, and I'm
just excited for my school's future.
Yeah, no, I thought it was great last night. His son, by
the way, cut a touchdown pass. I thought that was pretty neat
too, so.
Excellent, yes.
Yeah, Oklahoma's like Kansas basketball.
They're always going to win. They may eventually
choose the wrong coach for a couple years, but
they'll figure it out, get it back, top six
program of all time. Now, you got
hurt early in the year, but you're still a member
of the Raiders, and you're around the
franchise. And I've been saying this. I think I've buried the Raiders about six times this year.
And there's something about Derek Carr that in the national discussion of quarterbacks,
Derek Carr's the one guy that's good and people won't admit he's good. And I think this has been
a classic year for Derek as you got an interim coach. You lost Darren Waller. You've had
mayhem everywhere. The division's never been tougher. What is it like to be a teammate of Derek Carr?
Well, he never waivers.
And I know a lot of people won't believe me,
but I'm sure it's somewhere out there you can, you know,
in some type of interview or somebody can vouch for me,
I've always like D.C.
I've always thought he was a really good quarterback.
I've always thought he was underrated.
And it's been a blessing to play with him.
You know, you just see him in the locker room regardless of what happens.
He's got the same smile, same demeanor, good or bad,
or whatever happens on the grass, his demeanor doesn't change.
He leads our Bible study, you know,
And you know how tough it is to lead a Bible study
when you may have had not a great performance on the grass
and then come in the next day
and have to keep smiling and stay that way regardless.
He's seen everything in an organization.
And it's great to be around a guy like him, a leader like him.
And I believe that continuing forward,
he's going to lead this organization to where they want to be, man,
just because, you know, it's hard to find a franchise quarterback one.
but one with poise and regardless good or bad, regardless of what coach is there, he remains the same.
And I believe that's what D.C. has been.
Yeah, no, I don't disagree.
I've said before, the last couple years, he's been a life preserver in a sea of chaos.
I think he's on a great job.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So I've got to ask you, I've always felt the NBA is a players league, not a coach's league.
That's not to say Phil Jackson wasn't great, but it's a players league.
Baseball to me is a general manager's league based on all the analytics now.
Managers don't even manage.
I mean, it's the GMs doing all the calls down to the field.
But I do think football coaching matters a lot because, I mean, you've got a playbook this thick.
You know, I'll playbook that thick in baseball.
And I look at the team you used to play for and Mike Nolan out, Dan Quinn in.
And it's a totally different defense.
And I'm like, man, I mean, are you surprised looking from afar at how, the,
The Dallas defense in a nine-month period, the change, is it a little surprising now observing it?
Well, I don't believe it's surprising.
And I'll say this.
This is why I'll say it, because the talent has been there.
The talent was there.
Every year they come out with these rankings of the most talented teams in the league.
And Dallas is always usually in the top five.
And they just put the right group together.
you know and obviously Michael Parsons was a godsend for them you know he's been incredible as a rookie
but D-Law's been there you know what I'm saying?
Trevon Diggs was there last year they brought in all the right pieces and as long as you
got the right guys in place and then the right leader and coach Quinn see I played against
coach Quinn and I had an opportunity to get to know him because when I got injured last year he
actually reached out to me and we kind of built a really good relationship based off of it so I got a
chance to get to know him. And when you have the right players already there,
you know, Layton is there. Coach Quinn brought in some of his guys. Neville
Gallimore is there, my young guy from OU, Randy Gregory is there, you know,
Doris Armstrong is there. When you have guys like that in place who can actually play the
game at a high level and you get the right coaching, this is what you get. And then you got
incredible talent in Michael Parsons to come give them that jump start that they
need it. I'm not surprised
at all because the talent has always been there.
It just needed the right coach. By the way, I was
just talking with Joy. I said, Devante Adams
is a free agent, and I'll never tell an athlete
to take less. But I would
say this, is that Aaron Rogers
is a big cap hit, and like number
two quarterback cap hit in the league.
And if Devante Adams becomes the number
one cap hit at wide receiver,
then there's defensive guys I can't keep.
And I'm looking at the ram. So I'm
like, now I'm looking around my conference, my division.
I'm like, we can't keep
elite defensive guys.
If you were a Devonte Adams,
and I know guys don't want to talk about other guys' money,
but have there been moments in your life
where the environment was so good
or the coach was so good, you would consider
taking less?
Well, I guess it's all
a personal preference or where you're at in life.
Do you have what you need as far
as finances? Can you make
it up on the back end outside
of football?
A lot of people make a lot of different decisions
financially based off where they're at
in life. I don't know how his endorsements are. I don't know where he's at financially.
So it just all depends. Some people, they say, hey, listen, I can go play with a great
quarterback, or I can stay with a great quarterback, or I can go make this money and set my
families for life. Some people can do both. Some people can stay with a great quarterback,
and because of their success, they can make the money off the field to make up for what they're
not making on the field. And, you know, I just think it's personal preference.
about where a person is at in life.
You know, they have a great thing going up in Green Bay,
and I believe it can continue for another three, maybe four years.
But it just depends on where he's at financially
and, you know, what his wife thinks
and just where he's at mentally in the game.
You know, I talk to some guys where I've asked them like,
hey, why wouldn't you go to the winning team?
He's like, man, I want a Super Bowl already.
I'm trying to get money.
Yeah.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, some people are to the point where they're like,
I've had enough success.
now need to get money.
And some people are like, hey, I'm going to try and do both.
So it just all depends on where persons are at mentally and where they are at with their
family and financially.
All right, finally, take the Raiders out.
You can't use the Raiders.
What team do you look at today and think, man, if I was a betting man, I like their chances
in these NFL playoffs?
Well, my favorite player is Aaron Rogers.
So I'm always going to vote for anywhere he's at.
But I'm never betting against Tom Brady, and my favorite team is still the Bucks.
I grew up a Bucks fan.
I was drafted by the Bucks, and it's a blessing to be on any team I'm on.
But from afar, I'm always rooting for the Bucs.
So if I have to pick, I'm picking either Green Bay or the Bucs.
By the way, show that sooner hoodie again.
Let's show that off.
You should do it with pride.
This?
This old thing?
This is nothing.
Well, congrats on your.
I watched that entire game last night.
I'm from the Pacific Northwest,
but the Sooners were the better team
and Bob Stoops is a class act.
I love having you on.
We're out of time.
It's great seeing you.

Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

this morning my internet didn't work i couldn't get uber from the hotel because i had been
staying at a hotel for a couple days something's getting fixed in the house so joy and i were talking
about this years and years ago charles barclay um did a very i didn't think it was controversial
but i don't think much is controversial i think people are bored and make stuff out of nothing
and charles barclay did a commercial and it was i am not a role
model. You know, you're a parent. You're a role model. I am not a role model. And people were just
outraged. And there was this big national discussion. I swear to God, it lasted years. Does an
athlete have to be a role model? Of course not. And I'll give me an example. Nowhere in my contract
does it say, I'm a journalist. And I've had people before say, well, you're a journalist.
You're not going to ever in my life tell me what I am. I will define what I am. I'm an opinionist.
I'm a journalist if I want to be a journalist. It's not in my contract. And Foxx,
is very comfortable with it, and I am.
Now, I have certain ethical standards that I believe I need two sources if I'm going to
go out and break a story.
I did break my own rule with Tom Brady when he went New England to Tampa.
Joy was sitting there.
I had a one of my, I'll just say a great source.
I'll just say that.
And it's like, yeah, he's going to become a buccaneer.
So we broke that story.
I broke my own rule.
But generally, I have two sources.
Those are my standards.
There's no law of journalism that says you have to have two standards.
Those are my personal standards.
So nobody's going to tell me what I have to be.
It's not my right to tell Aaron Rogers to be a role model.
If you want to be a role model, you can as a pro athlete.
But Aaron's loyalty is to his teammates and to his employer.
And Aaron Rogers has a right to an opinion on COVID.
I may strongly disagree with it.
And I do.
But he's got a right to it.
And I'm not going to mock him for it.
Now, I do believe Omicron is different.
I think it is closer to the flu.
I think it's going to spread wildly and not be as punitive.
So I'm much more willing to give somebody a pass on an Omicron comment than I was a Delta variant, right?
Like that, that was obviously more serious.
750,000 Americans died or 800,000.
This, I do not believe, is the same thing.
I think it is closer to a flu, and that's what studies are showing globally.
But it is interesting when I watch this, you know, this heel turn by Aaron Rogers.
And, you know, Aaron tends to play the victim a lot.
like I'm a victim here.
You have an opinion.
You're not losing any money.
You're not losing checks.
A lot of errand stuff is just self-absorption and self-absorbed.
He plays the victim.
It wears me out.
That said, I don't like when the media uses this.
You should be a role model.
That's not our job.
I'm never going to tell an athlete's got to be a role model.
Some are wonderful role models.
I mean, I have said this so many times.
We are so lucky.
The overwhelming majority of professional athletes are great.
guys. They're charitable. They're great family people. They're funny. They're thoughtful. 90% of the
guys I've covered in my life. And they're getting better, by the way. Athletes are better today.
60s, 70s, 80s. But as we've given them more money and more power, thank God they've used it
mostly on good stuff and helping their universities and families and charities. They're wonderful.
But they're not a role model. That's up to you. If you want to be a role.
role model B1. And if you don't, don't. Hour 2 next.
