Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fans, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:42 You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Cliver Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for The Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, here we go on a lively Tuesday. In Los Angeles, it's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
Starting point is 00:02:45 IHart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, one hour from now, the hardest herd hierarchy in the history of herd hierarchies. I don't know what to make of the league. Joy Taylor is joining me today. Maybe a surprise star on the show today. Very interesting. Joy, how are you? I'm great, you know, just living my non-victim life over here.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Finding a way to survive in these streets. It's tough out here, Colin. It's a lot of responsibility. My wife was screaming last night watching a football game. from Chicago. And first time since we've been married, she was going crazy last night. And I kept telling her the importance of
Starting point is 00:03:33 finding a franchise quarterback. I'm like, you can do everything wrong in this league. If you got that right, it makes everything work out. I know that was a frustrating ending for Bears fans, but you got to walk away feeling kind of good. You found your guy. Yeah. So Bears lost a game, found a franchise quarterback. I'll take that
Starting point is 00:03:49 any day of the week. So everything I complained about Jordan Love of the Packers, the young kid. I'm like, where's the Wow moment. One. Where's the juice? The coaches for Green Bay. They don't trust him. Look at the play calling. All of that last night, you saw it on every series with Justin Fields. Big, athletic, fast, huge arm, sit in the pocket, take shots. At one point Matt Nagy said after that he looked over at Justin Fields and Justin Fields gave him that look like it's go time. Nagy said, you don't know how great that feels.
Starting point is 00:04:25 And a lot of bear fans were saying this. Well, well, they weren't doing a lot of bootlegs and weren't doing a lot of deception. Yeah, we did that with Mitch Trubisky. And it fooled Bear fans and people in the locker room into believing that's a franchise quarterback, which we told you from day one. No, Mitch Trubisky, it's smoking mirrors. It's a house cards. So Matt Nagy last night.
Starting point is 00:04:48 No, no tricks. Steelers defense, sit in the pocket, make throws. Oh, he did. What do you want to be fooled into believing he's good? Or make him make plays? They rolled the pocket. But Green Bay coaches against the weak Kansas City defense had no trust in Jordan Love.
Starting point is 00:05:05 The Bears coaches against a great Hall of Fame coach and a great defense. Let the kid sit in the pocket and make throws. And he had to overcome absolutely atrocious officiating last night. Atrocious officiating. Justin Fields averaged 17 yards per completion. more than any quarterback in this league. Okay, that's big boy quarterback. That's throwing the ball down the field.
Starting point is 00:05:29 That's not Trubisky tricks, smoking mirrors, all that nonsense that fools people into believe in a dude can play. By the way, Jordan Love, 10 yards of completion. And that's with a better receiving core. That's with a better offensive line. That's with an offensive coach that everybody thinks is great. So do the bears have the right coach? I like Maggie, Nagy, more than you, but I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Bears have the right GM. I got my doubts. But you have the quarterback. Well, Colin, it's just one game. No, it's not. We've all watched these music shows, American Idol, the voice. It doesn't take long to spot big time talent. You can see a hack and you can see a star, you know, eight seconds, 15 max.
Starting point is 00:06:13 So this league is not complicated. Got to get a franchise quarterback. That's what the Chargers did. then get the offensive line fixed to protect your number one asset. That's what the Chargers did. And then have a bunch of people draft them that can go get their quarterback. So the Bears have two of them now. They got the quarterback and they got the guys that can get the quarterback.
Starting point is 00:06:35 But they've been trying to rebuild this old line for three years and it's still an absolute mess. And here's the thing with Justin Fields. He's the guy. First time since, was it Johnny Lou Jack like 60 years ago? You got your guy. Cade McNan wasn't your guy. Jim McNan's not a guy. Rex Grossman's not that guy, though, talented.
Starting point is 00:06:54 This is the guy. Big, tall, athletic, fast. The confidence this kid played with, even in the final drive where they attempted to field goal, it was like, oh my God, this kid has grown so much in the last month. Side line throws, sat, look down, field,
Starting point is 00:07:12 can't see it sideline. Sat look down, field, sideline, sat look down sideline. All right. I'm off the field. It's up to the kicker. He did, even though they didn't score it, he did everything you could ask. Now, now, is he going to have bad Sundays?
Starting point is 00:07:27 Yeah, Josh Allen just had one. May he lose himself a little? Yeah, Patrick Mahomes is officially lost. This stuff doesn't go to, this tree does not grow to the sky. It'll get chopped a few times. But if you watch that and you don't see it, then you don't get it. Would you rather be Pittsburgh this morning that got a win? but has a dinosauric quarterback with no succession plan?
Starting point is 00:07:51 Or would you rather lose that game, have a losing record, and no, for the next 12 years? You're watching what's happening to Aaron and Green Bay. I got my guy for 10, 12 years. I'll take that every day of the week. They found their guy. By the way, he's doing it with a bad offensive line. He's doing it with a coach. You're not sure you trust.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Against the great defense, wasn't a lot of smoke and mirrors, man. It was just make the throws. We're not going to trick people, make the throws. And he did, almost enough. All right, so this is interesting. You know, I've been a critic of Aaron Rogers. That is well documented. I think he's a great first ballot hall of famer.
Starting point is 00:08:34 In fact, always said I liked him more than far. He was more of a thinking man's quarterback. But my issues were always leadership and his inability to build alliances, Front office, you know, people beyond himself. Well, well, well, well, well, well, here's the latest story from people.com. That's Hollywood. It's just down the street. A source close to Roger says he is unhappy with all the criticism.
Starting point is 00:09:04 He's now, quote, being crucified for it. He knew some people would disagree with him, but people he thought were friends are turning on him. Oh, that's interesting. His friends. You mean the ones he ghosts when they don't placate and defend him at every turn? I've known multiple people through the years that thought they were friends with Aaron, and he ghosts them when they don't defend him. Yes, being a friend of Aaron has always worked one way. It's about Aaron. So shocking this morning that his friends turn on him. Maybe they're embarrassed by him. This article also suggests Aaron may retire.
Starting point is 00:09:48 That I have no idea. But he did say he was 50-50 right before the season, so I wouldn't put anything past him. But this is how Aaron has always seen the world. I am the son. Everything revolves around it. He compared himself to MLK. Oh my. And he feels crucified.
Starting point is 00:10:07 You mean like Jesus? if Peyton Manning stepped in it. Or let's use an example recently. Drew Breeze stepped in it. He got pounded for a day. And then people started lining up. White teammates, black teammates, coaches, front office, broadcasters. People started lining up behind Drew Breeze.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Why? Because Drew Breeze doesn't call out his franchise for 20 minutes. Drew Brees has worked his entire life to build relationships. So when he stepped in it, and by the way, we all do. It's hard. You have to build friendships, and friendships are even, and a friend can disagree with you, and a friend can be critical of you, and you don't ghost them. That's how friendships, real friendships work.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Not in Hollywood, of course, where people pretend to be something, like maybe your friend. Aaron's big in Hollywood. But we all step in it. And Aaron stepped in it. But now he can't figure out why he doesn't have this alliance of people that are there to defend him. Where have you built it?
Starting point is 00:11:23 He spent 20 minutes calling out. Remember that press conference? Calling out the Packers front office. Shocker, Aaron, they're not. not here to put their arms around you today. I said it when he said it. Would Brady do that? Would Peyton Manning do that? Would Eli Manning do that? Would Drew Reeves do that? I mean, I understand Russell Wilson gets mad at his franchise, but the minute Seattle made a couple of moves, we joked on this show. He was back to Gohawks. I love my team. I love my coach. I love my GM,
Starting point is 00:11:56 Mr. Optimism. With Aaron, it's passive aggressive shots at coaches, it's calling out the front office, It's ghosting friends and surprise when you step in it. Nobody's there for you. Because friendships take work and sacrifice. They have to be even. I yell at you, you yell at me. Jeff Saturday and Peyton Manning. There's video on NFL films, them screaming at each other on the sidelines.
Starting point is 00:12:23 It's okay. That's what friends do. That's the way it works. Joy can be mad at me. I can be mad at joy. It's not work the next day. It's no biggie. We just laugh it off.
Starting point is 00:12:31 That's the way. it works. But Aaron today feels victimized. He doesn't feel support. Well, where have you built it? This stuff is hard. I'm not saying that. This is not pick on
Starting point is 00:12:46 Aaron. But if all your relationships start and end with you and you see yourself as above the frame and above the front office and above this and above that, well, you're not part of the group. You're above it. And now you're on your own.
Starting point is 00:13:02 But Drew Breeze wasn't. When he had that 24, 36-hour, stepped in a moment, boy, people, everybody, people on other teams came out and said, yeah, no, actually, when I broke into the league, Drew was there for me. Drew was really good and really supportive. That's the way it works. That's why Drew Breeze has multiple offers at multiple places and was allowed to play forever. How many times did we see Drew Breeze, a teammate retire and cry on the podium?
Starting point is 00:13:32 offensive linemen weep 6-6-320-pound men weeping at the podium that they loved him because of how much he had given to them that's how friendships work i give you give i sacrifice you sacrifice you sacrifice ghost people not if you care about him so today Aaron according to people people dot com I didn't even know it was the thing. Caught me off guard with that one. I didn't even know people.com was a thing. He is very upset, and they are insinuating retirement could be on the table. That I don't know, that I doubt, that I have no sources. But I do have sources that Aaron's difficult. And then I see him call out his organization for 20 minutes. Shocker, they're not there for you. All right. Really interesting stuff on Patrick Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Really I know Steeler fans are feeling great today. Also a herd hierarchy, which I'm telling you folks, after about spot number two, I don't know who's good in this league anymore. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon
Starting point is 00:14:49 Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:15:27 I don't care which I'm saying. Yep. That's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes,
Starting point is 00:15:50 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. Starting point is 00:16:26 Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:16:55 or wherever you get your podcast. podcast. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:17:28 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:47 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Order Jersey mics in your mobile app. Pick up or get it delivered. Jersey mics. Be a sub above. So Ryan Clark, former Steeler, is criticizing
Starting point is 00:18:12 Patrick Mahomes coming out and saying he's broken. It is safe to now criticize Patrick Mahomes. It was not three weeks ago when we started saying he's broken. He's not that good. He's not playing well. First of all, I've said with Patrick Mahomes,
Starting point is 00:18:28 he's dealing with now major expectations. His family's gotten increasingly noisy. They're rebuilding the offensive line. They just don't run the football. It is all on Patrick Mahomes, and that's hard. He's a kid. But I want to talk about for a second the burden of talent. And, you know, Phil Jackson's probably the best at knowing this.
Starting point is 00:18:50 He built the greatest dynasty ever, and many believe the second best team ever in Shaq and Kobe. A lot of egos, a lot of entitlement, a lot of great. greatness and those things blew up pretty fast, right? Because, I mean, you're fighting the front office. It's hard, right? Kevin Durant, Steph, Warriors. That didn't last as long as anybody thought. The Heedles in Miami. There's a saying that I don't know where I heard this and I don't bring it up much. But when you can do anything, you'll want to do everything. With Tom Brady, there are limitations to what he can do. That creates real clarity for a coach.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Okay, Tom can't do this. Tom's great at that. Let's double down on that. Let's draft for that. Let's do that. There's limitations on what Tom can do. It creates clarity for Tom and clarity for the coaches. But with Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes,
Starting point is 00:19:49 do I let him just do his thing? Or do I kind of create a lot of. some boxes to get a little more efficiency. It's hard to coach. It's harder to coach. Josh Allen's hard to coach. It took them like two years to figure it out. I've said this.
Starting point is 00:20:08 LeBron James has run through a lot of coaches. LeBron's hard to coach because he, in his prime for 15 years, could do anything. Steph Curry doesn't run through coaches. There's limitations. Yeah, Steph can't guard that guy. Yeah, Steph's not going to keep him away from the glass. You don't know. Steph can shoot. This is what he does. He's a great teammate. It creates clarity for Steph and clarity for coaches. Kyrie Irving. And I got my issues with Kyrie, but he's the best small finisher in league history. He's a brilliant ball handler and shooter. He thinks he can do anything because he can do almost everything.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Dwayne Wade was never a great shooter. There were things Dwayne Wade wasn't good at, wasn't gifted at. But what he was. gifted at like Brady, everybody knew, and you could build around it. It creates clarity. Okay, this is what they do. Let's give more support for that. And so with Mahomes, there's a lot of stuff he's dealing with. Families getting noisy. Expectations are bigger. Divisions better. They don't run it. Rebuilt offensive line. But Greg Kosell talked about it on this show. Is that Mahomes is much harder to coach than say somebody in his division like Justin Herbert. Here's Kosell. He's been way too quick to break down in the pocket.
Starting point is 00:21:29 He's very unsettled. Right now, Mahomes' helmet is not calm. He's moving his head way too much on his dropback. And when that happens, that means you're not really seeing anything. So at this point, he's not really seeing things within the structure, the order, the purpose of the progression, and that leads to a lot of unnecessary movement. Mahomes clearly is playing a little fast. He's not seeing things.
Starting point is 00:21:54 and ideally you get him to calm down. Look, this is not the first time they've ever seen split safety coverage or two men. Okay, what did he just say? When you can do anything, you leave the pocket early. You want to do everything. That's hard to coach. I think you'll get it right. I'm almost sure it'll happen.
Starting point is 00:22:15 He's coachable. He's a smart kid. But these players, these LeBron's and Mahomes that have the ability, Josh Allen, what do you do? Do you squish them in a box a little? Wait a minute. Then you're taking away their gifts. It's hard.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Sometimes being not quite as talented, but great at a handful of things makes it not only easier for you, but it makes it easier for people who coach you. Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, O'Dow was placed on waivers yesterday by the Brown.
Starting point is 00:22:54 And apparently he has voiced some interest in playing for the C-Ox possibly. Head coach Pete Carroll spoke yesterday about Odell potentially joining the team. What's going on? And we've been involved to understand it and compete and to know what's happening. And we'll let you know as it all happens. I'm going to wait. So I didn't say yes or I didn't say no. But that's just because you'll see.
Starting point is 00:23:22 That's how a veteran coach. Yeah, that's a guy who's done a press conference or two. Let me not lead you into anything. He did drop a you'll see at the end, which is a little bit... It sounds like they're interested. Well, yes. They currently have the best odds to sign O'Dell, according to Foxx bet, plus 300,
Starting point is 00:23:36 plus 300, Raiders and Ravens plus plus 500, Patriots plus 600, and the Niners and Chiefs are also plus 600. So the Seahawks have the cap space to absorb his $7.25 million salary for the rest of the season. Yes, and by the way, Russell Wilson made a play for Antonio Brown, and it drove him crazy that he ended up with Brady. So what Russell Wilson? Wilson is saying, hey, I got Tyler Lockett. I got D.K. Matt Caff. I got, I think it's Freddie Swain, the kid from Florida. And they're just saying, he's just saying, hey, can he win a game for me this
Starting point is 00:24:06 year? Is he another guy that can win a game? And by the way, we've said this before. Everything works with Russell Wilson. Rookies work. Remember D.K. Matt Caff. Oh, he's trouble. Oh, I don't know. He doesn't run routes. It works pretty good with Russell. So if there's a team that this is going to work with or a quarterback, we have a quarterback here. Brady's the same way. Brady Welker work, Randy Moss work, A.B. Work. Mike Evans work. Brady and Russell Wilson, it almost always works. Will Disley was a blocking, was a defensive player in college. They turned him into a blocking tight end. He goes to Seattle and now he's like an offensive player. Like, he's productive. It's not that they like lack skill position players. They don't. But why not?
Starting point is 00:24:51 And if you can afford him at this point in the season, it's not going to hurt. Now, About a third of the league can absorb his deal without moving money around. And any team that puts in a claim for, we'll basically find out by 4 Eastern today if he's been claimed off of waivers. This is fun. If Seattle gets him, it's a story. I mean, I like it. According to Schafter, Odell says he wants to go to a team that's a playoff contender, of course. And there could be potential issues if a team that doesn't fit Odell's criteria claims him.
Starting point is 00:25:23 So him putting that out there is kind of like just a bit of a warning. Like if you're not in playoff contention, you don't want drama. Don't bother bringing me in. Which again, I don't have a problem with. Odell has been completely marginalized in Cleveland. Sometimes you just got to be a diva. Like I don't want to participate. I don't want to just go anywhere.
Starting point is 00:25:45 I'm going to take a little bit of control. I'll take the heat for quote unquote being a diva or drama or whatever. if it's going to get me somewhere that I can be successful at. And at this point, why not? Like, we all know what O'Dell is capable of. Can he get back to that place with a good organization? We'll see. By the way, wouldn't it be great now?
Starting point is 00:26:04 The Browns and the Seahawks make the Super Bowl. Stranger things have happened. Well, yes, listen, it's 2021. There's all kinds of crazy things going on right now. So Steph Curry finished with 50 points last night to lead the Warriors to a 127, 113 win over the Hawks. He had nine three-pointers, shooting 50% from the field. He also had 10 assists and seven rebounds and shot 9 of 19 from behind the arc.
Starting point is 00:26:27 So he's the first player in the league to score 50 in a game this season. It's his 10th career 50-point game, which ties him with Kareem for the 10th most in league history. Man, that's from Davidson, little guy, got hurt early in his career. He's also the oldest player, 33 with 50 points, 10 assists in a game. It was previously wilt at 31 in 1968. He has been held to 20 points or fewer. in his last four games. So this was a big night for him. And the Warriors are now 9-1 to start the season with the best record in the NBA. And they have a really nice mix of old and young. They added a couple
Starting point is 00:27:02 of veterans off the bench. And this Jordan Pool kid, again, people don't watch in the NBA unless you're a diehard now. So when KD left, that draft, they picked up a kid named Jordan Pool. Well, he has become 16, 17, 17 point a game guy. And Clay's not back. So we all know this league. You've got to hit threes and you've got to be offensive. Jordan Poole, Clay, Steph, Wiggins is there. You could use that as a trading piece. This is a real basketball team that leads the NBA
Starting point is 00:27:31 in like seven offensive stats. Well, this shouldn't be terribly surprising. We know what Steph is capable of when he's healthy. And this is what this organization does. Yes. They develop players. They draft and develop players. That's why they became the dynasty that they are.
Starting point is 00:27:44 That's right. Everyone talks about them like there's this crazy super team. Like, do you know how Steph and Clay Dreamon got there? They won a title before Katie got there. Yes. This is a team that is patient. They develop players.
Starting point is 00:27:57 They build things up. They have a good culture. So it's not terribly surprising that they're playing that the way that they are. So Zach Wilson hurt his knee in week seven. It was a two to four week timeline for his return. And this Sunday's game against the bills for the Jets would be the two week mark. But Robert Sala doesn't seem like he is rushing Zach Wilson back. If he passes, yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:17 If he's fully healthy for sure. So meaning like he'll start on Sunday then if he's fully healthy. Yeah, but it's, but again, it's one of those deals. I'll see how he is. We're not in any hurry to rush him back at the same point. If he's not fully healthy, it's, guys, it'd be irresponsible for us to throw him out there. So I also said anything is possible last week when he was asked about the possibility of Mike White having an extended run in the starting lineup.
Starting point is 00:28:46 That's interesting. Somebody suggested that on his show. the game with an arm injury, but he is expected to be recovered by this week's game. They host the bills and they're currently 13 point underdogs, according to Fox Bet. I don't know that there's any reason whatsoever you would rush
Starting point is 00:29:01 Zach Wilson back. Well, I mean, let's be honest. If he's not practicing, I don't want him back. I don't want to put a rookie quarterback without practice. But also, what's the point? You have a you're not in a position right now where you're trying to make the playoffs. Yes. So you're just trying to develop a culture at this point. Zach is not fully
Starting point is 00:29:17 healthy. You know that he's going to be running around anyway. You have a solid backup in Mike White and Josh Johnson did a good job. So there's no value whatsoever in rushing him back. Now, I don't believe in turning the team over to the backup quarterbacks once he is back healthy.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Because the purpose of this year at this point is to develop Zach Wilson. He needs as many reps as possible when he is healthy. But there's no value in rushing him back. Good stuff. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. I love
Starting point is 00:29:49 Six years in the NFL. Used to be a teammate with Peyton Manning was a star in high school and college in the Pacific Northwest where I grew up. Brock Heward, Fox Sports Football analyst is joining us. So I think we both have always had an incredible appreciation for Russell Wilson, his commitment, his intelligence. I said this to Joy a little bit ago. There's a Brady quality where he'll take a blocking tight end. He ends up with Russell. He's got 60 catches and you're like, he makes everything work.
Starting point is 00:30:16 as long as OBJ understands, he's not going to be the one. He's too brittle to build around. I think it could work. I mean, where do you fall on this OBJ to Russell? I know what you enjoy trying to do. You're trying to talk yourself into this column. That's what you're trying to do. I listen to you too.
Starting point is 00:30:38 I think it can work. I mean, he's really fast. He's explosive. He kind of is flirting with Seattle because Russell is the best deep ball thrower in the game. But then you realize and you look at the Seahawks and the one thing they have is a receiver in a receiving room in Tyler and D.K. Like there's a redundancy in OBJ's skill set. And on top of that, you tell me, Colin, is O'Dell going to come in and do the little things? Is it going to come in and block?
Starting point is 00:31:02 Is it going to come in and run jet sweeps? Is he going to come in and be a great teammate in that wide receiver room? With D.K. Metcalfe, who wants his touches? Who Tyler Lockett needs his touches? I just think there's much better fits around the league. for OBJ than in Seattle. I think New Orleans is a home run. They need him.
Starting point is 00:31:21 The injury to their top receiver, he's from Baton Rouge. Remember, he's passing out Benjamin's in that LSU locker room, right, after the national title game. So I think there's better fits in Seattle. Does Russell want him? Do you want to keep Russell happy?
Starting point is 00:31:36 Is this all about Russell Wilson? I don't know. It just feels like a stretch to me and listening to you and Joy, try to talk yourself into it. I think you feel the same way. Yeah, I mean, it is true. I don't like Seattle right now at Corner. I have questions about the interior of the offensive line. I didn't know they had enough cap space to go get somebody. So I think to your point, there's a duplication of skills here, and that's what you worry about. I do think New England could use a deep threat. Absolutely. And I think the Saints could. So I want to talk about this. When Russell Wilson got hurt and they said, oh, it could be six to eight weeks. I said, listen, these guys that really are committed to their bodies just cut it in half. It's going to be four weeks. That's just the way it works.
Starting point is 00:32:17 So you're probably not surprised that Russell's back early. I'm not calling. And I don't know. Obviously, I'm from the Pacific Northwest. I've been around that team and Russell this whole decade in the league. I've tried to think about this. I don't know another athlete that is invested more in himself than Russell Wilson. I mean, it is into the seven figures easily.
Starting point is 00:32:36 You're talking chef, you're talking physical therapists. You're talking strength and conditioning coach. You're talking mental coach. You're talking Qibou. you're just you start to put it all together Colin it is an extraordinary amount of money that he invests back in himself for moments like this it was a few years ago he has a high ankle sprain he's got a grapefruit on the side of his ankle he didn't miss a game he had an MCL sprain he didn't miss a game right he's up in the all hours of the night training you know getting medical help and treatment and stretching and all those things to work through those injuries and in this case he sees the top doctor in the world who himself now made a statement this morning that even he is blown away at this guy's commitment to himself, his commitment to his rehab, his commitment to getting back on the field. And no, it did not surprise me at all that he's ahead of schedule,
Starting point is 00:33:25 did not surprise me at all that the doctor came out and said, I've never seen anything like this because that's kind of commitment this guy has. You know, the late great Trevor Moad, who trained Russell, who we lost this last year, said choice is an illusion, right? If you want to be great, there's no choice. Like you've got to put in the time and the work and the sacrifice. and that guy epitomizes every bit of it. So, you know, I love the city of Chicago, the Bears franchise,
Starting point is 00:33:51 and maybe I'm going crazy. But I watched the way Green Bay coached Jordan Love, very tepid, very timid. That's with really good players, an excellent O-line. And then I watched the way Matt Nagy coached Justin Fields with a bad O-line, limited star pieces against the great defense. And what it told me was the bear coaches are like, we got a star, we've got to let him play here. We're not going to do smoke and mirror stuff. When I watch Green Bay coaches with Jordan Love, I'm like, they are, and that's a bad defense.
Starting point is 00:34:21 And I was kind of, I was really impressed with Fields last night. I didn't think it was going to go well. Your takeaway. He's coming, Colin, right? We talked about him before the draft. I think you and I both really liked him. And he just felt like, and actually there's a lot of qualities compared to the guy we just got done talking about. And Russell Wilson, who's rookie year, you just felt Russell coming. It wasn't perfect. About eight games in, I remember talking to Pete Carroll.
Starting point is 00:34:46 He almost sat down Russell Wilson because he needed to be a little bit better in the situational moments. And that is where Justin is growing. He's been tremendous. I did a little homework for you this morning. He's got like a 112 rating down in the red zone. He's been tremendous in those moments down there. Now he's got to improve on third down. That's where five of his intersections have come on third down where the picture changes and everything gets more difficult.
Starting point is 00:35:10 But I don't think there's any question. You just feel his urgency grow, you feel his confidence grow. And with that, to your point, I think you feel that sidelines and that play caller, right? And the head coach say, okay, let's go. He's comfortable. We're gaining trust in him. He's growing and developing. And, yeah, I think I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:35:27 You could just feel it, right? It's not even your eyes that see it. You just feel it and you feel the reaction with his teammates. Yeah, and I don't think you and I are seeing that one any differently. So Aaron Rogers can come back this week. if he passes, I think, another test so he can't practice. And so you played under Peyton Manning, who was a practice zealot. Like Peyton Manning, you know, he wanted to have another run through on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:35:53 Tony Dungey has told me that before. It's like, no, it's Family Day. He's like, Coach, one more run through. So Peyton would not be a quarterback who could not practice all week, go in. You just know it wouldn't. But Aaron's a little more free spirit ad-living. And I think to myself, what Aaron would I get, Sunday. And my feeling is Aaron's personality, a little bit of an artist more than Peyton,
Starting point is 00:36:17 I think he did, I think he could go without practice. But you tell me, do you need, even do you need those reps at practice, even if you're a veteran, Brock? You tell me, Colin, did he pick up a football this offseason? I mean, they used to, they used to joke around with Brett Far, right? I think this is true. Maybe you can ask Brett next time he's on your show. When Matt Hasselback was the backup in Green Bay, Matt said, oh yeah they would ship brett a big bag of footballs and and he would spend time in the driveway scupping him up and send him back like oh yeah i got a lot of work in man i was really really working hard this off season and it strikes me that erin's the same exact way he did nothing this off season with
Starting point is 00:36:56 the team he didn't need any of the otas any of training camp any of that so as long as he's cleared saturday he'll play sunday he'll be licking his chops i am sure finding ways to attack that Seattle secondary that, as you said, Corner has been vulnerable. Jamal Adams in Space is vulnerable. This is a matchup. He likes playing Russell Wilson, right? There's a little agitation.
Starting point is 00:37:18 There's a little frustration. There's just a little competitive, just feist between those two guys. Aaron will play Sunday. Yeah. You know, I said this about Patrick Mahalms regression. I said, for athletes that can do anything,
Starting point is 00:37:33 they want to do everything. And with Brady and some of the great ones, Breeze. Doesn't have a huge arm. It creates clarity for yourself and the coaches. This is what Drew can do, and this is what Drew can't do. But for the LeBron's, the Aaron Rogers, the Josh Allen's, the Mahomes, it is harder to coach because you don't want to squeeze them in,
Starting point is 00:37:54 but sometimes you need to be squeezed in. Like, what do you make of Mahomes regression? Yeah, I like what Patrick said a couple weeks ago talking about his own fundamentals, because that's where I see it. I think that's where a lot of us that played the position, and you're right, He's played in the way I've said this to you before. It's not even watching the same game that I used to play 30 years ago. I mean, the things that he can do is throwing on the run, his ability to, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:17 throw with his eyes closed for crying out loud behind his body. So he does the extraordinary very, very well. This is about doing the ordinary. I think that's what you're speaking to, right? These greats that make it look so easy. Now, can you come back and do the ordinary over and over and over and over again? And I think that's the biggest key. It's fundamentally.
Starting point is 00:38:38 It was Aaron Rogers last year before the season. We had them week one against Minnesota. And he said, you know what, looking back at its fundamentals, he didn't like the 2019 season. He felt like his legs, his base weren't good enough. He went back in the wait room. He put a bar on his back and was squatting. This was Aaron Rogers for the first time since college.
Starting point is 00:38:57 It really wanted to improve his base and it paid dividends in an MVP season. Patrick's watching himself and realizing that base, that foundational piece of the football. work in those legs. There's a reason some 45-year-old guy in Tampa is still doing it and maybe leading the MVP race right now because he does the ordinary, extraordinarily well. I think that's the key for Patrick. Brock, I love having you on our show. As always, he can talk college. He can talk pro. So good at both. Brock, good seeing you, man. Thank you, Colin. I appreciate it. You bet. I was just thinking about this watching Aaron Rogers. What should Aaron Rogers do from this
Starting point is 00:39:33 point forward. How should he handle this tsunami of bad press? And I just thought about this. I'll play Aaron next. I'll tell you what I would do if I was Aaron. I'll be at the press conference. You can take shots at me. I'll tell you what Aaron should do. We'll do that next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot,
Starting point is 00:42:18 or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your point. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:42:56 To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:43:19 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. One of the things that's truly exhausting in America today is everybody is a victim. You often see conservatives say, yeah, those woke people, they're always a victim. And then when the conservative people step in it, what is the first thing they do? They become a victim.
Starting point is 00:43:45 I'm exhausted, left and right being a victim. I'm exhausted by it. And the sooner you can get over being a victim, the more it's about other people. You know, you have to admit, Greg Popovich of the Spurs used to say during their 20-year run. When we drafted kids, the first thing we wondered is, are you over yourself? Or is it all about you?
Starting point is 00:44:08 And so, to me, the longer you, I'm a victim, it's not fair. Oh, it's about you then. Well, it's a team sport. Tom Brady's got the most functional intelligence I've ever seen for a pro athlete. There are so many times he could have stepped in it. And in the end, he didn't have to be the funniest. guy at the mic, he doesn't have to have the last word. I think there's a way, and by the way, half this country, you know politically will disagree with his take. But here's how I would
Starting point is 00:44:36 handle it. Joy is going to ask me four or five questions. I'm Aaron Rogers. I'm at a big press conference now. Let's pretend I'm at a press conference. And we have cameras. Oh, it's a big press conference because I'm Aaron Rogers. Go ahead, ask me hard pointed questions. Hello, Aaron. Why did you lie? It was a learning experience. I think you have to be authentic. Plenty of players around this league have been authentic. Whether they've been vaccinated or not, learning experience. There's never a right time to do the wrong thing. You've got to be authentic, and I was inauthentic.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Joy Taylor, Woke News Journal. All right. Are you upset with the way you've been treated? I've got a great life. This is about the team. I'm not a victim. I've got 12 state farm commercials. I am supported by unbelievable people in this community.
Starting point is 00:45:26 I'm fine. Trent Crim, the Independent. Have you reached out to anyone on the team? Yeah, a lot of teammates. I have apologized to many for disrupting the hottest team in the league. I told Matt LaFleure, I'm sorry that in the middle of this incredibly competitive NFC schedule, that I have created a distraction, and that's on me. Bob Fredrickson of the Cheesehead Tribune.
Starting point is 00:45:55 Yeah. What do you make of what the media is doing? The media has a job. Matt LaFleur has a job. I have a job. I don't sit around. I can't worry about that. I have to be forward thinking. This is a windshield. I can't be worried about the rearview mirror.
Starting point is 00:46:12 We got Seattle, Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll. I can't be worried about that. My concern is overwhelmingly Sunday and being there for my teammates. Physically, emotionally, in a leadership position, I'm facing Russell Wilson. Every time I face Russell, it's been the biggest game of the week. It's been one of my biggest games of the year. I can't worry about people with microphones and pens.
Starting point is 00:46:40 That's their space. My space is my teammates. It's not that tough. But the longer, that question from the woke news journal is very probing. The longer in life you're a victim. Oh, then it's about you. And your feelings. Are you a quarterback for a team?
Starting point is 00:47:03 If you're a quarterback for a team, there is a responsibility to be there for the team. Now, if you want to play tennis or be a skier or be a golfer, then it is about you, you and your sponsors. That's different. If you want to take a week off on the tour and just play like Tiger did in his prime, just the six biggest tournaments, it's your decision. You don't have an offensive line. You have a salary cab. You do whatever you want. skiers, tennis players.
Starting point is 00:47:29 Serena's like, I'm bound out of a tournament. We do whatever you want. I supported an Olympic athlete. When the Olympic athlete said, I don't feel safe doing this tumbling, I don't feel safe. What's your body? It's about you and stop with, she's part of an Olympic team. Really? You sit there and watch the leaderboards?
Starting point is 00:47:45 No, we celebrate Michael Phelps' goals, not team championships. I am for the individual athlete being concerned overwhelming with the individual. but once you sign up for salary caps and you wear a logo and you're part of a community and people buy season tickets and they travel around the country to watch you, then the temperature in the room changes. And it's not about you being a victim. You could move right past, by the way, if Aaron's like, I'm going to own it, should have been more authentic and they beat the Seahawks by 24.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Story's over. It's over. Who cares who hates you on Twitter? Everybody hates me on Twitter. Beat Seattle by three touchdowns. move forward, own your space. You're not a victim, and it is over. In seven days, this story is over.
Starting point is 00:48:34 Oh, people will take shots at you. Who gives a rip? You're Aaron Rogers. You're one of the best players in the world at your position. There are Sundays, you're the best player in the world. America forgives, always, always. Athletes have done far worse. America's always forgiven.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Hour two next. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy, Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
