Wherever you may be, however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. We have a bombshell story that happened late yesterday afternoon.

Brian Flores, fired by the Miami Dolphins, alleging his owner, Stephen Ross, was going to pay him to take games. feels like to me Stephen Ross should have his franchise pulled. And three teams he's suing, alleging racism and hiring practices. Joy Taylor is joining me this morning. Generally, don't like to start shows with something more positive. But I think we've reached the tipping point with black coaches in this league. And I think it's time.

And it's good to have you in. Yes, it's definitely time. And I think I might be switching allegiance to me. I've been exhausted by the dolphins. Let me start with this. If you are hopeless in life, you feel hopeless, you've done everything you can do. There's only two actions. You can be passive and quit and just disappear or you can fight.

Brian Flores said, to who I am, I'm a fight. Black coaches are at Wits' End. What can we do? we don't get opportunities. Take the New York Giants. Just this organization. Think about this. So the New York Giants, two coaches have really worked there, Parcells and Cofflin.

When you tell me Brian Flores is rigid and tough, I laugh in your face. Parcells and Cofflin? The Giants, when they had Tom Coughlin, had to have private meetings regularly to tell him to tone it down. He was so intense. So, Kaufflin leaves, and they hire Ben McAdoe, who had never been a head coach. It is a disaster. They do it again. They hire a coach Pat Schumer, who was a coordinator.

It may have been worse. It was a disaster. They then hired Joe Judge, who'd never even been a coordinator. It was worse than the previous two. It was an utter disaster. So disaster, disaster, disaster, wouldn't you think you would go, let's see, let's go back to the thing that worked.

Hire somebody who's been a head coach. And by the way, the soft, nice guy, the Shermer, that doesn't work. And there's this guy in Florida, he's winning with a bad owner, a bad roster, and a below average quarterback, which is virtually impossible in the NFL. I'm not saying you had to hire Brian Flores. But you wouldn't even give him anything more than a sham interview proven by Bill Belichick's texts.

Folks, he's from Brooklyn. He fits the Cofflin Parcell's profile. He's from that Belichick tree, which appears to hold huge weight with the Giants. And he didn't get a legitimate interview. coordinator, coordinator, Joe Judge. And you're really going to go back to the coordinator thing. And by the way, Brian Dayball may work.

Colin, he made Josh Allen work. Never put Josh Allen and Daniel Jones in the same sentence. New rule on the show. It's Joy and I's fourth rule. Never put them in the same sentence. But you can put Daniel Jones in the same sentence with Tua. And he won with Tua. if you're a black coach think about outside of yourself for a second so dennis allen is probably

going to get the saint's job he's in-house dennis allen was an utter disaster as a raiders coach eight and 28 i am not against him getting another chance i'm i'm four young people failing getting another chance. But Brian Flores couldn't get a legitimate interview. Josh McDaniels is going to get the Raiders job. He was 11-17. He admits, and again, I think he's going to succeed. I do think he'll work in Oakland. I think they're Vegas. They have players. They have dirt car. But he's getting a second job. Brian Flores not only didn't fail, not only wasn't overwhelmed, he did virtually the impossible in the National Football League. Give me another example. Bad owner, bottom five quarterback.

That's where it were a ranks. Terrible roster. And back-to-back winning seasons. There's no comp for it. If you're a black coach, you can passively go into the night. Or you can fight.

Those texts from Belichick de Flores are so humiliating are so maddening. I mean, we know there's been racist owners. We know that. NBA had to get rid of one. We've seen multiple instances.

But Brian Flores was on CBS this morning, and he was asked by Nate Burleson, former NFL player, great young broadcaster, why, though he knew it was a sham interview with the Giants, he went ahead with the interview. How did that make you feel, knowing that you were walking into an interview where a decision might have already been made?

It was a range of emotions. humiliation, disbelief, anger. I've worked so hard to get to where I am in football to become a head coach. Put 18 years in this league

and it was to go on what was going to be what felt like or what was a sham interview. Think about this. the hit rate on hiring head coaches. This morning I was talking to the staff and I'm like, what is it? 50%.

They laughed at me. It's like 7%. Make it. 7%. In the last five years, Vrable was great. McVeigh's obviously been a home run. McDermott. Last five or six years, we've had a handful of hits.

but Brian Flores, if not fired, is in that group because he had back-to-back winning seasons. And think about this. We now think Zach Taylor is a good coach. He's in the Super Bowl with Joe Burrow. Before he got Zach Taylor, Zach Taylor, before he got Burrow, he was 6 and 25. That's with two things that Flores had. Suboptimal ownership and a bad roster. Zach Taylor was six and 25 and one.

Got a great quarterback and wins. Flores had the same bad ownership and the bad roster, never got a great quarterback, and still won. Zach Taylor was six and 25. The best quarterback won every division. Brian Flores got in trouble for two reasons. Number one, he wouldn't take $100,000. dollar checks to tank games. And number two, he knew you couldn't win at a high level with his quarterback and fought for

it. And to that, he got fired. Flores continued on CBS this morning about his lawsuit. We didn't have to file a lawsuit for the world to know that there's a problem from a hiring standpoint in regards to minority coaches in the national football league. The numbers speak for themselves. Right. We filed the lawsuit so that we could create some change.

And that's important to me. I think we're at a fork in the road right now. We're either going to keep it the way it is or we're going to go in another direction and actually make some real change. So I'm not saying you had to hire Brian Flores, but you can't give me the excuse that he's rigid. Jim Harbaugh may get the Vikings job. Tom Coughlin was a success in New York. Rid, it's the exception when you're not as a couple. college coach or an NFL head coach.

They're almost all rigid. They're almost my way or the highway. That's just the way it works. I mean, Bill Belichick wouldn't let his assistance talk for years. Gronk, party gronk, on more than one occasion, feared Belichick. That's how they rule by fear. And I'm not saying you had to hire Brian Flores, but as a Brooklyn kid with a winning record back-to-back in a division with the greatest coach ever

and Josh Allen, a sham interview, you can either passively disappear into the night or you can fight. And that's what Brian Flores was meant to do. Let me talk briefly about Jim Harbaugh. He is now interviewing for the Minnesota Vikings job, puts Michigan in a tough spot. I think Jim Harbaugh has come to terms with he wants to get back into the NFL. For the record, he's been coaching their seven years, four of those years, they won 10 plus games. He rebuilt the program. He also sees the reality, as did Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly's a really good football coach. 12 years, like Harbaugh, rebuilt a great northern brand. Years ago when I grew up, northern brands often dominated college football, Washington and Nebraska and Penn State,

Notre Dame in Michigan. And then networks started putting all the games on TV, and kids thought, you know, I can stay closer to home, girlfriend, family. And then LSU became a power. And Clemson became a power again. And the SEC started dominating. Yeah, that's what happened with college football. It is harder now than ever to win when you have to leave your cold northern region to get

your best players. and there's only two options. You can go join them in the SEC. That's what Brian Kelly did. Brian said, okay, I've played Georgia a couple times. I've played Alabama. They have way more NFL bodies. I'm going to go join that conference.

Or you can do what Harbaugh does. I want to go to a place where I'm not at a decided athletic advantage. In fact, I may have an advantage when I get to a Super Bowl or a playoff game. But Brian Kelly and Jim Harbaugh, in my opinion, are leaving for the same reason. Because they have eyes. They can see that in the footprint of a Texas or a Georgia or an Alabama or even when they're rolling a USC, they have to ask players to go to northern cold weather climates

because their regions don't have as many great NFL players. That's a fact. It's not an opinion. And there's only two solutions if you want to win big. You go join them like Brian Kelly or you go to the NFL like Jim Harbaugh. And most coaches in Northern Powers just don't have those options. Most don't get offered an NFL jobs like Harbaugh, and most don't get offered the LSU job like Brian Kelly.

So there's a lawsuit by Brian Flores against the NFL, three different teams. The real bombshell to me, though, is the allegation by. Brian Flores that Stephen Ross, the owner of the dolphins, incentivized tanking that he would pay Flores 100 grand to lose games. So here is Brian Flores on CBS this morning.

He thought that led to his demise. He wouldn't buy into it. I didn't grow up with a lot. This game changed my life. So to attack the integrity of the game, that's what I felt was happening. in that instance and I wouldn't stand for it. And that was Dolphins owner, Stephen Ross. Yes. Yes.

So. And you think it hurt your career? I think it hurt my standing within the organization. And ultimately was the reason why I was let go. The fact that Stephen Ross thought he could offer this up to Brian Flores shows you an 80-year-old man that is in the Twilight Zone. Can you imagine if somebody came to me and said, I'll pay you $10,000 to make stories up.

Just they're not true. Make them up. I mean, I have a right to be wrong. I mean, the IRS does audit companies and finds nothing. I can be wrong. I've had sources tell me things and it's not factually correct. But if I was taking money to make stuff up, you should never trust me again, ever, regardless of if I left networks, if I left careers, you should never trust me.

The fact that a coach, Brian Flores, is saying, my integrity doesn't have a price tag. And the idea that an owner in this league, this tears at the fabric of the league, that an owner would come out and say, I'll pay 100 grand, listen, we all know the game in tanking. We all understand the Colts didn't want to play Peyton Manning when he was beat. up the last year, probably could have brought him back for a few games and said, rest up, Andrew Lux's available. It's unspoken, but it's also understood. But to go to a coach early in the process, this is his first job in an industry that

isn't always favorable to black coaches. And to go to that coach and say, lose on purpose. I mean, Stephen Ross is, he is operating on a galaxy. that is, if I'm Roger Goodell, and remember, the owners are Roger Goodell's boss, but this league now, the ratings are great, the revenue is great, you've got sports gambling revenue, which by the way, worries leagues a little bit. We have had a Tim Donagy in the NBA. We've seen at the college level, the Boston college scandal 40, 50 years ago.

When you bring gambling in, there is a concern, you know, monitor games, coaches, behavior. And Stephen Ross is out here like, hey, let's tank games. Wow. That is lose your franchise stupid. That's as bad as it gets. The Donald Sterling stuff, you hear the video tape. It's like, all right, bye, bye, he's gone. That feels like a take care, see ya, bye, bye, 80 years old, out of touch, it's been dysfunctional forever. That of all the lawsuits and allegations is to me so ugly and so damning. I don't even know where the league goes on this. That's Roger Gidell getting on the phone with other owners privately and saying, listen, this league is, our ratings are so good, our games are so good, our sport is so good, we've got to make a move. Joy with them. News.

Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, the 49ers have not said what Jimmy Garoppolo's future in San Francisco is, but Jimmy G seemed pretty sure. when he spoke to the media yesterday. Got a long career ahead of me, so I'm excited about it. I'm excited about the opportunities to come. I just want to go to a place where they want to win. I mean, that's really what I'm in this game for. I'm here to play football, here to win football games.

And as long as I got that, no, good people around me. I think the rest of take care of itself. I think he's such a good fit in Pittsburgh. I really do. I love him for Pittsburgh, but I don't know what Pittsburgh's going to do. it's because he is he's not a long-term fix wherever he goes because he does

come with an extensive injury history that's fair so wherever he does go which is why I actually like him for Pittsburgh because you keep Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins I keep Haskins he's a better overall talent he was a first round pick yes and you have to assume that there's going to be a game or two where Jimmy's not available

because that's what his career has always been so you have a strong backup but you know what Jimmy is capable of a situation like the Pittsburgh Steelers where you are waiting to see what goes on in the draft next year but you don't want to fall completely out of contention in the division, that's a place that makes sense.

I don't think that the Niners are going to send him somewhere that it's kind of bleak right now. You're looking at the Texans or the Saints. By the way, what if the Niners did not ask for big picks? The Niners said, give us a third round pick and a player.

Like the Niners have the kind of roster. There's not a lot of draft picks in the third round they're going to make the team. But if you went and said, I'm trying to think Joe Hayden, I'm trying to think of a player the Steelers have, a corner. Like I could see them saying, we'll do a player swap in a third round pick or a fourth round pick. That's what I think, because the Niners are in that window. They want to win now in that division. Developing somebody is not nearly as attractive as a number two corner or a number one corner. Well, also, you already got someone to develop in Tray Lance. So you want to

have as many veterans and known commodities around him as possible. According to Fox Bet, the bucks currently have the best odds to trade for Jimmy G at plus 300. And they also could send, you know, we love Debo Samuel. And although he's inconsistent, Brandon Ayuk is talented, but he's not consistent. Could we get a Chris Godwin? I mean, they're, again. They're not parting ways with Debo.

No, no, no. I'm saying we'll give you Garapolo. You give us a fourth round pick. Yeah. But actually, you have some. players I would like. I could see them asking for a tight. Now, Kittle gets banged up enough. Could you give us a Cameron Brate? Could you give us a wide receiver? Those are like luxury items for Tampa because they have multiple players. I can see, I guess my point is, I could see San Francisco not being as demanding on picks and saying,

we'll take an elite corner for a quarterback and maybe a fourth round pick. You know, normally these teams want to get the best trade possible, but this is kind of an outlier situation. Jimmy GD really did right by them this year. Yes. And they, you know, I do think relationships and how you handle players matter. Everyone's always trying to be cutthroat and get the best deal. And, you know, these are all just expendable pieces. But players pay attention to that stuff. So I do think that in this is one of those situations.

Well, they'll send him to a place, like he said, he was going to a place that's winning. Washington football team is interesting, which we'll talk about in just a second. The Broncos, if they don't get Aaron Rogers, which I think the Aaron Rogers decision will come sooner than we think, if they don't get Aaron Rogers, obviously the Broncos would want to go after him heavy. We don't know what the dolphins are doing ever. And the Panthers are tied with the dolphins plus 700 to get him. So Tom Brady officially announced his retirement yesterday, and now the Bucks will begin their search for a new quarterback. GM Jason Light said the team will go down to every avenue during their remodel to find the best available option,

whether it is on the free agent markets. They also drafted Cal Trask in the second round last year, so they do have. him in-house. Here is a list of the notable free agents that are available. Teddy Bridgewater, Jacoby Brissette, Andy Dalton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Marcus Marriota, Colt McCoy, Cam Newton, Tyra Taylor, Mitchell Chabesky, Trevor Simeon and James Winston. Deshawn Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo are expected to be

on the trade market as we just discussed. DeShon Watson, we still don't have an answer on his legal situation. So not a particularly thrilling list of players. I do think there's some guys on there that would be great bridge situations. Yeah, I think this feels like a list of bridge quarterbacks. You know, as much as I bang on Mitchell Trabisky, if I had to play Mitchell Trubisky for a year, I would do it.

Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater. If I had to play him a year, I would do it. I still think James is capable when he's in a situation where, yes, you know, he's controlled and pulled back a little bit. But, you know, we've seen pretty much everything that these other guys have to offer, most of them are backups. Well, they'll be on the market for a reason. Right.

Light also said that they're holding out hope that Granc is going to choose to return for next season But I don't see Grom coming back So after 87 years with its former name And two years with the Washington football team Washington franchise has a new name this morning Well we kind of found out because they put The logo up all over the building

Before they made the announcement And a helicopter saw it yeah I thought the uniforms The commanders I liked the uniforms the name is fine I don't care I like the Washington football time. I thought it was different. But I do like the uniforms. I think they're tight. I think you're kind of split. Everyone's kind of split on it. I kind of like them.

Well, look, anytime there's a new logo or a new, you know, uniform design, everyone freaks out. I like this logo. The name does nothing for me. I like the Washington football team. I thought it was classy and different. Yeah. It had a little bit of an elegant feel. It had a soccer field. It had a soccer club. I know everybody wanted them to have a mascot or whatever. But I like the Washington football team. I don't think of a lot. lot of Washington football team fans liked it. So now I can call them the Washington Commanders. I have not solicited the opinion of any Washington Commander fans about whether they like it or not. I think it has a kind of a Pittsburgh Steeler feel to it and a Washington

football team feel. I think it looks formidable. I think it's got a little Steeler feel, a little Washington feel. Yeah, I mean, they're going with a little, you know, military-esque. Yeah. I don't think it's terrible. You could have done worse. Yes. Well, Jason Wright and Ron Rivera had stressed that they wanted to incorporate the military in the name because of its connection to the nation's capital. Yeah. So there you go. So the Washington commanders, we can be done arguing about that team name now.

Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. You know, we were talking about Brian Flores, obviously a big story today. And I'm not saying you have to hire Brian Flores, but it is really interesting. I was talking to somebody, a friend of mine yesterday, Mike Silver, about this. And I said, we always talk, like there's seven or eight great quarterbacks in the league, and that's it.

And I would argue there's seven or eight great owners in the league, and that's it. And seven to eight great coaches. Joey and I were talking about this this morning. There's not a lot of great anywhere. So this idea, I think sometimes fans think, you know, there's a couple bad owners. Oh, folks, half this league's got Wackadoo owners. I've heard stories for years. And it's the same with quarterbacks.

You've got a handful of great ones. Robert Kraft in New England's a very strong owner. Then you've got another seven or eight who are certainly. competent. Like the Wilfs in Minnesota seem to mostly know what they're doing. And then you've got really dovetails very quickly into Detroit's and Chicago's and Washington's. But here's the thing about the hiring practices. Something has to be tweaked. And just for one second, let's just take race out of it. Just for a second. It's not working. Like 80% are failing. And I would say half of those that are failing are awful. Joe Judge, their complete misses.

So whatever's happening in the hiring process, beyond race for a second, it's just not working. So do a better job at it. Interview more people, have more eyes and ears. But I was thinking about it in the last five years, or let me read this. Hold on. I wrote this down. There's only five head coaches left who were hired more than five years ago. And we turn over a quarter of the league.

So it's not working. So these are the coaches that I would consider over the last five years to be hits. Sean McVeigh, none of us are going to argue. Matt Lefleur. Sometimes situationally, I don't love him, but they're way better now than they were with McCarthy. I am not counting McCarthy as a hit, and I'm not counting Kevin Stefansky, though I think he's competent. So I'm going to be choosy here. I think Kyle Shanahan has won a lot of games with like a B quarterback.

Bruce Ariens got to a Super Bowl and won it. That counts. Zach Taylor had my doubts, but what do you want me to say this morning? He's like, you know, he looks like he's 17 years old. he's in the Super Bowl. I would count Mike Rable. Now that's the first defensive guy. I think he's a big hit. I would count Sean McDermott, defensive

guy. He's a big hit. And then Frank Reich is kind of on the fence. But I would, me personally, I would put Brian Flores in that if he wasn't fired. I think Brian Flores and Frank Reich are very similar. You feel like, with Frank Reich, I feel like he should

have gotten into the playoffs. I really feel that this morning. Like, dude, you got to get into the playoffs. So that's a little bit on Frank. I've never felt with Miami, come on, dude, you've got to get that team into the playoffs. I find it fairly remarkable that with a bad owner, a bad roster, still a bad old line, and I don't think Machuatuah that they're winning. That's just like unheard of in the NFL.

So if you look over the last five years, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, eight I consider hits. And I would consider the ninth to be Brian Flores. if he wasn't fired. So, and I've said this for years. I understand that, and this has been a Patriot thing, the interpersonal skills from Patriot coaches has just been awful. Like, it's bad.

Matt Patricia struggled. Josh McDaniels, to his credit, came out and acknowledged, I was bad at it. Like, to his credit, just totally owned it. So I understand you have to get along with people. I've worked in this industry for 25 years. There are people that are talented that just don't get along with people. It really does matter. but then that's okay, but you can't sham interview them when they are absolutely the best coach on the market.

Now, I think Jim Harbaugh is the best current coach available because he was 4419. But he was in college. I'm talking about the guys in the NFL if you take Harbaugh out of it. Brian's way out there. And he's not even getting legitimate interviews. Now, I will say this. The whole hiring process to me is weird. I said this here today.

Doug Peterson outduled Bill Belichick and Brady with Nick Foles. One of the great coaching jobs ever. How many interviews did he get? It was weird. Jason Garrett, nine and a half years, one losing season. He didn't get an interview. Jim Caldwell had two winning seasons with the Lions, one with the Colts. He got like one interview?

Like, I don't even understand it. I don't even understand the hiring process. Jason Garrett gets an interview. Jim Caldwell gets an interview. Doug Peterson gets an interview. I mean, I get nothing against Brian Dable. I really don't. I think he deserves interviews.

But Brian Flores is doing something that is virtually unheard of in the National Football League. A winning record in a division with the greatest coach. And by the way, over the last three years, who's given Belichick? Who's been a big pain in Belichick's butt? Brian Flores. Didn't he beat him twice this year? Beat Belichick twice this year. You give me the last coach to beat Belichick twice in the season.

I think it's McDermott probably because they played him in the playoff game. It would be Sean McDermott this year. Sean McDermott beat Belichick twice this year. He's considered a genius. He's the great young coach. O'Brien Flores did do with Tua. and he's out of work. I don't know.

There's just a lot of boxes, Brian Flores checks, and I know he can be crusty, and I know, I understand that stuff. Like, the communication is vital, but he's not getting legitimate interviews.

They either spot them or somebody spots them for them like CTE, and they're very good at pivoting. We talked about this with a catch rule. just outrageous for years and years. We would go on the show. We couldn't figure out what the catch was. And in the middle of the Super Bowl, they pivoted to, we're going to go with the new rule. Now, this is obviously minority hiring is a much more serious offense. But the

CTE issue was a real issue five or six years ago. You had sports networks, commentators saying it's the end of football. What did the NFL do? They change practices. There's fewer practices. There's much less hitting. They've modified the rules. Now, it's great. great for quarterbacks and wide receivers and tight ends, and it's not always great for defensive coaches and defenders, but this is not baseball which can struggle to embrace change. The NFL, there's an old saying, the NBA thinks of it, baseball makes the most money out of it, and football gets it right. Football's always been willing, and it's really a great side. I started a business about a year ago, and I called several successful people, men and women and asked

what's the key to starting a business? And they all said the exact same thing. Be willing to pivot. Never forget, Amazon started as an online bookstore. Netflix was a better version of Blockbuster. Blockbuster didn't pivot. Netflix did and now owns the streaming world. And Amazon owns the retail world.

So you've got to be willing to pivot all the time. And sometimes, you know, you pivot and you still don't get it right and you have to pivot again and pivot again. The NFL's done a really good job in my life. They just, from the television production to the cameras, they, sometimes if you watch an NFL game, it looks like the USFL. When they, remember the XFL in Vegas, he hate me, which was a cheesy league, but they did one or two things really well, like their camera angles. They had cameras all over the field. Well, if you watch the NFL games this year and last year in the end zone, you're right in a player's grill.

Like he scores, and it's right there. they took that from the XFL. So the NFL is never afraid to improve, improvise, steal, borrow. So this is an issue, this hiring issue. And the Rooney Rule, sometimes I think something can be well-intentioned, but just doesn't feel authentic. The Rooney Rule is well-intentioned, but it doesn't, to me, feel authentic. You have to put levers or stipulations or legislation in it.

so it really matters. And I think it really looks bad for everybody involved. The New York Giants job, the biggest bombshell in all of this is the owner for the Miami Dolphins asking a coach to tank games. I don't even know where to go with that. I don't even know where to go. That's an outrageous thing for an owner to do. The second thing that really bothers me that a Brooklyn-born kid who was winning with a bad owner and a bad quarterback in a reasonably tough division was not given a legitimate interview. That's a problem. I mean, you've got to be able to to see that, right? You got to see sometimes beyond yourself. That's a problem. And when you look at the history of the league and they're hiring practices, you've got to do better than that. And I am

four coaches failing. And Flores did not fail. He did not fail. But I am four coaches failing and getting a second chance because I do think the NFL's always been known as a copycat league. They really do. I mean, folks, the Patriots used the Wildcat for about a year. It's a copycat league. And when McVeigh got the job, a lot of people like Cincinnati's like hire a guy that is young like McVeigh. So you are seeing a trend right now, not a racial trend, a trend of like young offensive coaches are just getting jobs. And a lot of them are working like LaFleur's working and McVeigh's working. But here's the other thing. Eric B. Enemy situation in Kansas City.

So this is what bothers me with that. And I've said this about Beyond Me, he's got a few things in his life that I think would preclude him from getting a college job. He had some incidents earlier in his life. But as an NFL coach, I am all for it. I hear that he doesn't call plays in Kansas City. Either did Matt Nagy, and he got an opportunity. I don't want to hear that. Josh McDaniels is now joining us live.

He's the new Raiders coach, the Las Vegas Raiders. First of all, Josh, you're a busy guy. I appreciate you stopping by the show. Thank you very much. Let's start with that. Now, I want to ask you, you've been, you had a very unique relationship with the greatest football coach of my life and the greatest player of my life. If I said to you today, what is the one thing you're going to take from you and Brady's relationship that you would install with Derek Carr, a lesson perhaps learned from you and Brady all those years, that you could say, Derek, I learned this from the greatest quarterback I saw. I want to make this part of our relationship.

Josh, what would that be? How genuine the relationship was in every aspect between the coach and the player. And I think until you create that bond, until you know, until you know each other that well and understand what's important to each other on and off the field, it's really, you know, it's really difficult to create a great bond and a great relationship. and Tom was always so genuine in his care and concern for me, my family, to this day is the same thing. I mean, when he texted me the other day after I was fortunate enough to get the job, it was, you know, send my love to Laura and the kids.

And that's really the biggest thing I take away from that relationship is the bond that we have and all the work and effort and time and care that went into. building it. You were very upfront. You were authentic. You were vulnerable. You said, I was not ready for Denver. I made mistakes. So you had to kind of rehab yourself. And this is a serious question. Was it, was it your wife? Was it therapy? Where did you go to get? You know what, man, something about me has got to get better. How did you do that? Yeah, you know, a very therapeutic thing for me was my time in St. Louis. You know, I had an opportunity to coach for Coach Spagnola after the Denver experience.

And, you know, we didn't have a great season that year. But I spent a lot of time there in the offseason by myself. My family hadn't moved there yet. And really tried to do a deep dive into all the things that I did and didn't do, all the decisions that you make, all the processes you put in place, and everything that you can remember. about your experience and really tried to take time to compartmentalize what we did well, what we didn't do well, what I did well, what I didn't do well, what relationships were built

the right way, which ones weren't. And just try to take the time to self-assess and be critical of myself. And I know the first reaction is to be bitter and angry and those types of things, but I think that's really a selfish type of an act when, you know, really and truly you'd still have the job if you did everything the right way. So it was very helpful for me to have that time. A lot of it alone and a lot of it, you know, just in terms of my own thoughts and what I did and didn't do well. And I used a lot of resources. You know, a lot of people reached out. A lot of people were very willing to help me with their time. Going back through their experiences, Coach Dungey was very pivotal for me during that time and very helpful.

But just trying to listen to everybody, trying to be honest. honest with myself and then try to figure out how do I need to improve if I'm ever given another opportunity and what can I do better the next time? 17 or 18 of your 21 years coaching in the Patriots organization. You've worked with Belichick and Dable and Flores and Bill O'Brien and Joe Judge. Just great, great. I mean, Eric Mangini and you probably bumped shoulders a couple of times. He's a good friend of mine. When Brian Flores filed that lawsuit yesterday, what was your initial emotional reaction to it? Because I thought he was a hell of a coach. And I felt bad for him. I thought when he said humiliated,

Josh, I felt bad for him. Yeah, Brian is a hell of a coach, and he's a hell of a person. And I'm not aware of all the ins and outs of the things that are going on. Obviously, the last couple days have kind of been a whirlwind for me. But Brian's always, he stands up for what he believes in, and he's certainly a guy that everyone in our organization had a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for. He was a big reason why we won a lot of games when he was with us in New England.

He's been a good friend to me for a long time and certainly has the support of everybody, I'm sure, in terms of what he's doing. But, you know, I'm not really as up to speed as maybe I will be, you know, eventually. But, you know, he's a good friend. By the way, I lived in Vegas for seven years in Connecticut for 10. I will assure you the winters are much more enjoyable. Yes, my kids were digging out from two feet of snow the day I was over here. and it was really a different dynamic for sure. Well, I think you'll love the city.

Yeah. Like I've said before is, I think young coaches deserve second chances. I think lots of, I've known broadcasters who are really smart and they get a job at 29 and they are not ready for it. And at 39, you're like, this should be their first job. So I think Josh is going to work there.

I think they've got really good offensive pieces. I really do clean up the right side of their offensive line. Boy, that division has got, I got Andy Reed, and I get Derek Carr, and I got My Holmes, and I got Justin Herbert. Boy, Denver, you better get that quarterback thing fixed. That division is unbelievable. AFC West is unbelievable. Hour 2 on a Wednesday next.
