help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Joel Clatt stops by.
You love the Clatster.
I love the Clatster.
America loves the Clatster.
J. Mack is joining us.
You know, it's hard in this day and age with social media.
I got into this discussion with my wife last night.
There's a reason there's so many bad candidates on both sides of the aisle, politically.
It doesn't pay anything, and there's this global explosion of tech wealth, so there's a lot of money in the private sector.
Politics doesn't pay.
The second thing is, who'd want to drag their family to get crushed on social media?
So that's why there's so many awful.
It used to be like people that ran for senator were respected.
Now it's goofballs, liberals, conservatives, there's so many bad candidates.
And it's the same thing in our world.
Nobody wants to admit they're wrong because it's just an avalanche on social media mocking you.
Yeah, well, I'm rarely wrong.
So that's not something I have to worry about, Collins.
But yeah, for you, I understand totally.
Okay.
Be the big man.
That's right.
So admitting you're wrong is harder now.
Politicians just don't do it.
It sticks to you forever.
It's very hard.
People in power don't want to do it.
They'll fight it.
They'll argue it.
So admitting you're wrong because everything now, stuff used to just, you know,
disappear into the evening.
Now you got the tweet, you got the Instagram, it lives forever.
It's a zillion dollar industries.
I mean, there are people that make, you know, it's an industry of mocking people's mistakes.
That's like trolling is like something, a real thing on social media.
And so you don't get coaches in the NFL in their first game or any game acknowledging,
I mean, Belichick won't.
He's made a mistake with his offense.
A defensive coordinator is a, coordinator is a,
play caller. That's a mistake by Belichick. It's an absolute mistake. He will never admit it.
But Nathaniel Hackett, on Monday night, attempted, instead of giving Russell Wilson the ball
on a fourth and five to get five yards, which he's done a dozen times in his career or more,
they attempted to kick a field goal of 64 yards. Well, since 1960, 1960, there's only two kicks
in the NFL that have been 64 yards. Two. And, uh,
McManus, the kicker for Denver's got a good leg.
He is one for eight trying kicks of 60 yards.
One for eight.
So statistically, it was a long shot.
It was a bad move.
It's much easier to get five yards with Russell Wilson in a stadium he's familiar with,
with lots of weapons.
It's much easier to get that.
Then at sea level, next to the Puget Sound, even on a nice day, the air is damp,
ball doesn't carry.
Longest field goal kick ever in that stadium is 56 yards.
you don't go for the field goal.
And the coach Nathaniel Hackett sort of admitted he was wrong.
Yeah, you know, looking back at it, we definitely should have gone for it.
Just not, you know, one of those things, you look back at it and you say,
of course we should go for it, we missed the field goal.
But in that situation, we had a plan.
I mean, we had a plan.
We knew that 46 was the mark.
And he dumps it out to Giovante.
Javante makes a move.
Goes a lot farther than I think we had anticipated.
We were expecting to go for it on Fort Down.
and then you hit the mark.
You know, the mark that we had all set before we started.
We said 46 yards, 46 yard line was where we wanted to be.
And we got there.
So we had to make the decision if we wanted to give it to, you know, Brandon.
And we did.
All right, sort of admits he's wrong.
I had an NFL general manager text me after my show yesterday.
He said Denver froze.
It's the only explanation.
Otherwise, you would have used your timeout.
So if you miss the kick, at least you.
you have two timeouts left and Gino Smith is going to kneel or run the ball.
So you're going to get the ball back with like 25 seconds left.
They froze.
So he's kind of admitting he's wrong.
But that's way better than the BS job Mike McCarthy.
The Cowboys gave us last year.
Remember, no timeouts left, 14 seconds left.
They run a quarterback draw to the middle of the field with no timeouts,
to the middle of the field with 14 seconds.
and after the game, I think it was a day later,
here was Mike McCarthy's explanation.
We had great confidence in that situation,
because we were just trying to get inside the 30-yard line
for the change of the play call for the final play.
So that's the right call based on our preparation.
We just got to really look at the mechanics and the timing of that too.
But yeah, it's a 13-second threshold is the call.
So at 14 seconds, it's, in my view, the right call.
Seriously.
There's 14 seconds.
There's a 13 second threshold.
I believe giving us one second of breathing room was our best option.
You've got to be kidding me.
And that story lasted and was talked about for weeks, if not months.
Nathaniel Hackett, admitting, yeah, I probably should have gone forward on
fourth and five, ends the story. Now, if they butcher end-of-game situations going forward,
the story will resurface. But my guess is going forward, Nathaniel Hackett, second game,
moving forward, more prone to go for it. Also, if you were at home during that game,
I still would have gone for it. But 64 yards in the high altitude of Denver makes more sense
than 64 yards in Seattle where the longest field goal ever is 56. So,
the minute you admit you're wrong, you don't give your critics anywhere to go.
But when you do a Mike McCarthy, you extend the story. You give it legs. You create debate.
Nathaniel Hackett sort of ends the debate. I should have gone for it. Let's hope
when the situation potentially arises going forward, they give it to Russ.
So this interesting. Jerry Rice was on a radio show yesterday.
to Adam Schein's radio show.
And Adam Schein said basically what a lot of us are thinking.
You got Jimmy Garoppel on the bullpen.
You have a great roster and a great coach.
You guys are struggling to complete passes.
Should we potentially be worried about Trey Lans and moving off him like if he can't beat Seattle?
Here's Jerry Rice talking about that to the radio host.
First game of the season.
And he made some great throws.
You know, he extended plays.
We would have never done that with Jimmy Chief.
And, you know, Jimmy G is an exceptional quarterback.
You know, he's going to do some good things.
But the one thing that Tray brings more is that you've got to prepare for him running the football.
So I was thinking about this.
I watched Tim Tebow in the AFC when Brady was in his prime, Manning was in his prime, and Big Ben was near his prime.
I saw Tebow get to the playoffs and win a playoff game.
The NFC right now is weak.
Rams O line, a mess, Arizona cultural mess, green bait didn't have any star receivers.
I mean, as Jason said earlier last week, Philadelphia's got a real shot to be a number one seed.
We don't even know if we like their quarterback in a quarterback league.
We don't even know if we like their coach in a coaches league.
They can be a number one seat.
So what if Kyle Shanahan realizes?
Okay, I got 100 pass attempts.
I watch them at practice every day.
He's going to complete about 55% of his throws.
That's what Denver and John Fox and Tebow,
all the people in Denver came to realize.
We have a good defense, so are the Niners.
We have a coach with experience, so to the Niners.
Tebow's a good athlete, so is Trey Lance.
Let's just run a different offense.
We're going to throw it like 15 times a game.
We're going to ask Tebow to run all the time.
A lot of screens, a lot of running, a lot of power running.
and it got Denver in the playoffs when Manning, Brady,
Big Ben were in their prime.
NFC now's junk.
So Baltimore did this to some degree with Lamar.
We're going to run a different offense.
Niners did it with Kaepernick.
A little bit Philadelphia, Jalen Hertz.
I don't know.
Philadelphia made the playoffs last year.
Probably going to win their division this year.
Kaepernick got to a Super Bowl.
Lamar Jackson.
Like, sometimes, like Tim Tebow.
Denver just leaned into what Tebow was.
They watched practice.
They're like, he's not going to complete 65% in this league.
And Trey Lance is way more talented than Tim Tebow.
And Shanahan's a better coach, in my opinion, than John Fox.
And this Niner roster is better than that Denver roster.
And the NFC is now weaker than the AFC.
They just came to terms with Tebow.
They're like, we're not going to try to make Tebow fit in our system.
We're just going to lean into what Tebow can do and do that system.
And you say to yourself, oh, Shanahan wouldn't do
that he did it with RG3.
It's like this kid's an amazing athlete.
He's coachable.
We're going to run a different offense.
I don't know if it's going to last forever.
But if it doesn't work, I got Kirk Cousins.
You know, so if this doesn't work, you have Jimmy Garoppolo.
You have to lean in if you have deficiencies.
And I'm not saying we know for sure Trey Lance is not going to complete 65% of his
throws, but I'm thinking about it this morning.
I watched Tebow not nearly as good as Trey Lance, not nearly as athletic as Trey Lance.
And Fox isn't the opposite.
offensive coach of Kyle Shanahan.
And that Denver roster wasn't as good as this
Niner roster. And I'm like,
they just came to terms with Tebow. Now, again,
Trey Lance is way better than Tebow.
But there are some similarities
in that
it's not a motion.
It doesn't look great. It doesn't
just lean into it. And you say to yourself,
well, what would you do?
You run Trey Lance 12 times a game.
You pass at about 16, 18.
And I mean, remember, this
roster now, Kittle's not going to be
around long, old and injured. Trent
Williams, not going to be around long. He's older,
he's had injuries. Kyle Eusecheck,
fullback, not going to be around long. Armstead,
getting older, had injuries.
Like you start looking at this roster,
it is a win-now roster.
It is a win. Now, Debo's
young, but even Debo's had injuries
because of the style in which they play. Remember, the
Niners play at 1974 football.
It's a wildly physical. They even
look different. They have the receiver. He's a
running back.
There's a reason the Niners have had injuries
since Kyle Shanahan got there.
It's a physical brand of football.
The practice is physical.
The games are physical.
That's what they ask of their players.
And so I say, why not lean into Trey Lance?
Because he's big, strong, and physical.
And just say, listen, we're going to throw about 18 times a game.
We're going to run them about 12 times a game.
We're going to be different and hard to prepare for.
I mean, I've been saying this about Philadelphia now for a year.
They're productive.
They score in the 30s all the time.
I don't care what it looks like.
They lean into Jalen Hurts.
they lean into what he does.
I've been defending Lamar Jackson now for three years.
He wins 75% of his games.
They just lean into what he is.
Now, I think Lamar throws a much better ball than people want to admit.
But I look at the Niners and I think, Kyle, Shanahan's done this before.
John Fox did this before.
Instead of trying to make a player fit into what you believe the ecosystem of the league is,
just lean into what he does.
And remember, Shanahan's sitting there watching practice every single day.
He's got 99 throws in the NFL.
He's watching practice.
every day. He went public acknowledging, I wish he had another year, he wish he had more time to
practice. They re-signed Jimmy G. So they're kind of telling you, it's not quite what we want.
So make it different and great at what you can do. And I look at this situation. Instead of like,
is he good enough? Is he going to do this? I mean, if he loses to Seattle, are you really going to
bench him? That's really the plan. Week two. To me, I think you just look.
lean into Trey Lance, go all in on Trey Lance, he throws it 17 times, he runs it 12 times,
go Uber physical with an Uber physical lineup and see where it takes you.
The NFC, you can win that way in the NFC.
You could be different, contrarian, physical, and just say, we're going to play different
than everybody else in the league.
You gave up three firsts.
You can't bench him if you lose to Seattle.
That's not an option.
You just got to say, what can he do and not nitpick what he can.
can't. What can he do? Big, strong, smart, coachable physical, athletic, in his prime, young,
not injuries, all in on that. And I think it, I think, I'm sitting there this morning and I'm like,
we've got Shanahan saying stuff publicly. He's telling you there's concerns on the throwing thing.
Well, maybe, maybe this is what he is. Maybe he's a 56% completion percentage guy. You're going to
give up on him. I mean, Denver, you got to give Denver credit. They're just like, this is what Tebow can do.
We're just going to go with it.
It won a playoff game over Mike Tomlin.
I think at the time Dick LeBow was the defensive coordinator for them.
It's like, what are the all-time great defensive coordinators?
They won a playoff game.
And the AFC then was way better than the NFC now.
Just a thought.
Just throwing it out there.
Could be wrong, often wrong with conviction.
Just a thought.
All right.
Giselle, holy moly.
Do you see that quote?
Hey, Colin, can I ask?
you Seattle 49ers recent history. You want to guess how that's gone for Shanahan?
How? He's lost four in a row to Pete Carroll. There's some pressure on Trey Lance this week.
I don't want to get you too fired up. Let me ask you this. What about the pressure on Kyle Shanahan?
Big time. He hasn't won any games without Jimmy Garavolo. Yeah. We can say the pressure's on Trey Lans.
Well, Trey Lance is a kid. The pressure's on Shanahan.
49ers fans are making a lot of excuses after that Bears game. There's no excuses if you lose to Seattle. Seattle just won the Super Bowl Monday night.
Doesn't Shanahan have to win games now?
That's where we're at with San Francisco.
You've got to be able to win.
Kyle Shanahan, and I love him.
I love his day.
I love him.
At this point, here's what's true about his NFL career.
If Jimmy Garoppolo doesn't start, he loses.
That's his career.
So you can blame Traylands all you want.
You picked him.
You've got to figure out how to make this work.
You can't be going to the bullpen every other week.
You've got to make it work.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd.

I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Then you're finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
People. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

So I thought this was interesting.
Giselle Bunchin, Tom Brady's wife, the supermodel, 5,000 million net worth.
She's basically said, yep, I'm going to let Tom have his career.
I'm going to raise a family.
She's, I mean, when they first met, she was far more successful, probably has as, as
big a net worth. And she's basically, for the family, said, you know, my career, I'll put it on hold,
whatever. It's Tom's, it's Tom's career. And, you know, those are hard choices for people, right?
Like, very few people are married to a superstar. I mean, Brady and Giselle are like the top of
the American food chain. They're top of the global food chain for superstars and net worth.
And the first time in Tom Brady's career, he is fighting a battle on two fronts. The first front is the
football front. He's got a new defensive head coach, an injury riddled offensive line. That
party's battling. And that's never easy. It's football. The second part, the unwavering support at home,
that's over. Giselle was quoted in L Magazine, which I've seen before. I think it's a model
magazine or a fashion magazine or something. She said, obviously, I have my concerns. It's a violent
sport. I have my kids. I'd like to be, I'd like Tom to be more present. That stinks. I've
definitely had these conversations with him.
Ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for them.
He needs to follow his joy, too.
But I wish he was more present.
That's tough when you're a dad.
You hear that.
You got kids.
Brady's been brutally honest about this.
He and Jim Gray have a podcast every week, and it's on Sirius XM.
And he talked about some of the things he's missed out on.
You have different priorities when you get older, you know?
And I think when I was 25, it was the simplicity of a 25-year-old life.
And I think when you're 45 and you have a lot of other commitments and obligations, which are very important to you, namely children that are growing up.
I haven't had a Christmas in 23 years.
I haven't had a Thanksgiving in 23 years.
I haven't celebrated birthdays with people that I care about that are, you know, born from August to late January.
And, you know, I'm not able to be at funerals and I'm not able to be at weddings.
And I think there comes a point in your life where you say, you know what, I've had my fill.
It's enough.
And time to go on to move into other parts of life.
You know, I see this all the time, not only in sports, but in Hollywood, I see it in business all the time where people work into their 70s and 80s.
Well, you know, obviously Nick Saban could retire now as the greatest coach.
But what Nick Saban sees is, I've kind of figured this sport out.
We have unbelievable momentum.
I want to do something in my life.
I don't want to go home and play Wordle and crossword puzzles.
And as you get older, if you have the.
right support system, it often gets easier.
The fight to be successful is in your 30s when nobody believes in you.
Your 40s, when you're battling a lot of people same age in your prime.
But once you get to be like 50s or 60s in business, it's hard to stop.
It's easier.
You've built the alliance.
You've built the credibility.
You've built the legacy.
You've built the net worth.
Nick Sabin could easily retire.
Nick Sabin told Jimmy Sexton, his agent,
years ago. I just happen to know some people that know those people. He's like, hey, listen,
I don't want to be one of these coaches that coaches into their 70s and 80s. And all of a sudden,
Saban's still dominating. And he's getting up there. I don't know how old Nick is. He's close to
70. Why would he retire? It'd be crazy to retire. I mean, why in the world we retire? He still
looks good. He sounds good. He's still great. And it's gotten easier for him. He's got Alabama behind him.
And that's the issue with Brady that I think he's struggling with. I think that Tom Brady was in the
AFC this morning and he looked at Mahomes and Josh Allen.
He'd be much easier to say, hey man, they are playing a different game than I am.
I don't need more playoff losses to my legacy.
I'm going to go hang out with my fam.
But I think he looks at the NFC.
Arizona is now a tire fire.
Dallas is a mess.
The Rams O line, a real problem.
San Francisco quarterback issues.
Green Bay doesn't have a star receiver.
I think one of the reasons, I think it's hard to retire when you see the path and you're like,
you start talking yourself into, I can do this for about three more years, make $25 million a year,
it's easy, it's fun, I want to do something with my life.
I think if he looked at Mahomes, I think if he was in the division and had to play Josh Allen twice a year,
who's not been forced to punt by Belichick, it'd be very easy to say, I don't feel like finish it in second place.
I don't want to add five second place finishes to my resume.
And like eight losses to Josh Allen.
Or if he played against Herbert, Derek, Karin Mahomes in that division,
be like, you know what?
I don't think third place my last four years in the league.
His division now is three rebuilding teams.
Bad quarterbacks, tanking.
The NFC is a crumbling conference.
That's what it looks like to me.
I think it makes it really, really hard for anybody,
any man or woman who's established momentum and credibility,
it gets easier as you get older.
You're established.
You walk into rooms, people open doors for you, and you look around and your rivals and your
competitors are weaker than they've ever been.
That makes it really, really hard.
I really believe if Tom was in the AFC, it'd be a much easier conversation to go,
Mahomes, Herbert, Josh Allen, secret out.
I'm going to go, hang out.
Look around the NFC right now.
Tampa played, I thought, poorly.
against the Cowboys, and it was never competitive on the road.
With an offensive line that's falling apart, wasn't competitive.
J. Mac with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the heard-my news.
Last four regular season games, Saints have sacked Brady 13 times.
Let's slow down.
This weekend's going to be a tough one.
All right, first up, Colin.
Dack Prescott, obviously out for a few weeks after having surgery on his thumb.
A lot of guys on social.
media were chirping for Jimmy Garoppolo, but that is clearly not going to happen. Jerry Jones said
they think Dak can be back in the next four games. Cooper Rush will start against the Bengals.
The line is Cincinnati, seven and a half favored in Dallas. I don't like predicting blowouts.
There's a lot of big spreads this weekend. Did you see the see? Five double digit spreads.
That's like college. I said that to the guys this morning in our prep call. I'm like, this looks like a college lines.
Be careful, folks.
Yeah, like Green Bay is a 10-point favorite.
They don't have any star receivers.
The Niners are a 10-point favorite.
Denver, awful loss.
Ten-point favorites against the Texas.
But the one game that feels like Cincinnati, Borough, really played poorly.
And almost won.
They go to Dallas, which has very little paths.
So they just faced maybe the best pass rush in the league.
their O-line a little bit embarrassed.
They go to Dallas without the pass rush outside of Micah.
I got a feeling Cincinnati is going to thump Dallas.
Interesting.
Like thump them.
Not even close.
No, I mean, I'm talking 3317.
Like a thumping.
All right.
Okay.
I sort of disagree with you, but we'll move on to the next story.
The Bears, they got an upset victory over the Niners, obviously, in the slop in week one.
The Packers, of course, lost to the Vikings.
The two teams meet Sunday night in Green Bay.
Linebacker Roquan Smith expecting to face an angry Aaron Rogers.
Here's what Roquan said.
The guys obviously one of the greatest to ever play the game.
And, you know, as a competitor and myself, love going against people like that.
I'm sure he'll be a little pissed off after this last game.
But hey, you wouldn't want it any other way.
Pissed off him.
Get the best version of him.
And then we get the dove and that would be even sweeter.
You remember what happened last year, right?
losing week one badly, come back and just throttle the lions?
Yes, but last year they didn't have the major O-line issues.
They had Devante Adams.
So I do not think this is the same team.
Interesting.
First of all, Richard Sherman knows his stuff.
He was asked yesterday, best receiver in the league, without hesitation, Devante Adams.
Remember in the off-season we all asked this?
Is Cooper Cubs still breathing?
Well, I think Devonte is more explosive.
Justin Jefferson?
Well, he's good, but he's young.
Okay.
I think better route to this point.
Adams. Remember in the offseason, everybody asked, oh, what's Devonte Adams going to be without
Aaron? And we said, well, it's Aaron going to be without him? If you start looking around that
division, Detroit's got a good offensive weapons. The Vikings have good offensive weapons.
Aaron can only do so much. They scored seven points in week one. Like, this is, I don't think
it's a fixable problem. This will never be a great receiving core for the next two years. It could be
interesting post- Thanksgiving if he finally trust Romeo does.
I know they only scored seven, but they moved the ball well, right?
They had a turnover in the red zone on downs.
They had a drop touchdown pass.
Moving the ball doesn't get you an extension.
And now they go home against a Bears defense that I don't think we think is very good, right?
The secondary?
I think their pass rush is fine.
I mean, I think Green Bay is going to win, but it's like I said about the Rams left tackle issue.
I don't think it's a solvable issue.
They've got the 18th best left tackle.
That's what they have.
So you have to figure out a way.
And I think with Green Bay, it's a bottom five receiving core.
Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, Alan Lazard, and rookies.
It's never going to be elite, not this year.
Isn't the Bears the team where Aaron Rogers did that belt celebration was like, I owe you?
I have a feeling they beat the Bears so badly.
You put the Packers in your herd hierarchy on Monday.
All right.
It'll be a beat down.
All right.
Final story, Colin.
the Detroit Lions have not had much success in recent memory.
This is pretty wild.
After losing their opener, you know, they scored 35 on Philly.
They are actually favored, according to Foxbet.
The Lions are favored by two and a half points against the commanders.
The last time they were favored in a game was November 2020.
Wow.
Their week 11 matchup against the Panthers.
24 straight games without being the favorite.
Well, do we thought people, so my takeaway on this.
Philadelphia is favored this week against a very good Minnesota team.
Yes.
And they lost 38, 35 to Philly.
So if Philly is the focal point of your argument, do you think Philly's good?
I do.
I think they made the playoffs last year, and I think Philly's better this year.
And they're favored over Minnesota.
So the data suggests that Philadelphia is a little underrated according to fans in America.
The Eagles are pretty good.
Vegas buys them.
They made the playoffs.
Minnesota's an underdog.
Well, Detroit lost 3835.35.
Scored 35 on that defense.
I mean, they were getting killed most of the game.
Well, again.
A lot of garbage time points, Colin.
They're points.
So you like Detroit in the favorite role here?
Yes.
Jared Goff?
Yes.
Okay.
I'm not a Carson Wentz guy, but I think Washington's probably the side here.
All right.
Listen, they look good against the Jags at times.
Wentz had a couple bad turnovers.
Who's the Jag.
Jared Goff, Carson Wentz?
All right.
J. Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
No, it is, you know, you look at week one and what the lines are telling you week one,
and we talked about this yesterday.
So 11 quarterbacks did not take a snap in week one.
Eight of them did not take a snap in the preseason.
So 11 quarterbacks in this league, a third of the quarterbacks did not take a snap in preseason.
Eight of those 11 that didn't take a snap.
lost. And of the three that won, two of them played each other. So somebody had to win.
So, I mean, the reality is you have to play. Here it is. The quarterbacks who did not play in
preseason, Tannehill didn't look good, Dack didn't, Kyler didn't, Derek Carr didn't,
Russell Wilson kind of did. Now, you say, well, Kirk Cousins did, and Aaron Rogers didn't,
and Kirk Cousins looked better. So you start going up and down this line. Stafford didn't look very good.
Herbert was okay.
Joe Burrow struggled.
Lamar didn't complete a high percentage of passes,
but he had a couple of things over the top.
But again, the Jets were on a backup quarterback.
But if you didn't play in the preseason,
didn't take a snap, you were three and eight.
So what I think is fascinating about that,
Brady played and Mahomes played and Josh Allen.
Aaron Rogers didn't with three rookie receivers.
So Aaron offseason disappears.
Aaron preseason no snaps and he looks awful.
So I think what we're going to have next year,
the pendulum's going to swing a little back to top quarterbacks in the league.
I talked to Joe Burrow yesterday.
He's like if I had not had the appendectomy surgery, I'd have played.
I think guys want to play.
I think Brady may have missed 11 days.
Brady wanted to play.
Mahomes played.
Burrow wanted to play.
Josh Allen wanted to play.
I think we're going to see a little pendulum.
swing back to star quarterback's set because it's getting kind of ridiculous that nobody wants
to play in the preseason. Well, what's the point of having the preseason? I mean, college doesn't.
Bam and Texas played a very good game week one. They're kids. They have 17 hour limitations on
practice. So I think next year you're going to start seeing you got to get reps in for O lines
and quarterbacks a couple of series each game. I mean, the O line play week one was atrocious.
That to me is no snaps in preseason. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays
at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.

Do you remember
when Diana Ross

Or when Kanye

didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush
got to do a little Kim?
Well, you can find out
on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jett.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense
of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode,
with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.

Absolutely.

Great to have you back.
Fox Sports NFL reporter.
Peter was featured on Jeopardy last night.
How about that?
Jeopardy.
That's impressive.
A pre-recorded question.
You're a big deal, Shregs.
So I liked when McCarthy last year
against the Niners
doubled down and said,
I would do a quarterback draw again with 14 seconds and no timeout.
I'm like all he did was extend the story.
Nathaniel Hackett said, yeah, I'd have gone for it.
I thought to myself, okay, yes, he should have.
But it does kind of kill the story.
Like I can't come after him.
It's like he admits I'd do it again.
What was your takeaway around the league, your takeaway on that weird ending in Seattle?
Yeah, weird and also probably the worst ending to a first career game by an NFL head coach.
And he got his wax all day, Monday, all day, Tuesday morning.
And then he came out and had his press conference.
Truth of matter it is, I've spoken to Denver sources.
It's like, McManus was like from that yard line, 46 in the left hash, I can hit it.
I can hit it, coach, from 46 to the left hash.
If they had picked up eight yards and not nine yards on that Giovante dump off,
they were going for it on fourth and six or fourth and seven.
But that exact yardage was what McManus said he could do.
He's never hit a field goal that long.
He usually kicks in mile high.
He missed it.
Um, here's what another point is, though.
And I think Hackett hit on this a little bit, but you can go far further with this.
They had 12 penalties.
They fumbled twice on the one yard line.
They had an egregious penalty within the five yard line, a false start, which would have been a touchdown.
They had a tight end who caught the ball and just decided not to roll over and go in the end zone and went out at the one yard line.
They also only scored six points in four different trips inside the red zone.
The Broncos lost by a point and they had all those things go against them.
Right.
They held the Seahawks to under 300 yards.
They had over 400 yards.
That was a wild ending.
But I think Denver will look at the tape and be like, well, we outplayed them.
We're okay.
We took to clean things up.
Yeah, no, I agree with you.
We said this the other day is that they're not going to fumble at the one-yard line twice for the rest of the season.
Like there are these outlier moments.
Like, it was also, it should be noted, the loudest Seattle's ever been because of Russell's return.
I had friends up to Seattle that went there.
They're like, my ears are ringing a day later.
All right.
Let's go to, so there were some early throws by Trey Lance in bad weather that were kind of
impressive.
He stuck two throws early and you're like, wow.
But we have 100 pass attempts in the NFL and he completes about 54%.
It's not great.
So they lose a game.
They're favored by a touchdown.
They don't do much in the second half.
Another young quarterback with limited weapons beats them.
How do the Niners feel today about their situation at quarterback?
I've spoken a lot of them.
It's like, and I mean that by my folks either in the coaching.
staff or the front office and they're not getting that game a mulligan.
They are not putting an asterisk on that game.
They got punched in the mouth and they lost that outright to the bears.
However, it's hard to look at that tape and consider it like, okay, in those conditions,
are we going to make a knee-jerk decision on, they're up 10-0-0 in Debo fumbles and
the game got out of hand.
They were more upset with the defensive penalties in the fourth quarter that cost them
an opportunity to get the ball back.
But the bad turnover by Debo, that's what did them off.
They're up to nothing in this game.
And then those conditions.
So at no point is it, hey, Trey, you didn't play.
I think they'd say, hey, let's look at week two.
Let's look at week three.
And I know it's easy to panic and it's good for us to get the Jimmy Garoppolo story going.
It will.
You know, if he doesn't deliver soon, it will.
But I think it's a little premature now based on the conditions.
And the Bears one that came out right, 100%.
But to judge Trey Lance after one game with those conditions, after them being up 10-0 and having a bad fumble,
I think it's a little premature to say, let's give him the Yankee yet.
So I saw this stat this morning.
Lamar Jackson is the fastest player to reach 10,000 career passing yards and 3,500 rush yards.
He did it in 59 games.
Vic did it in about 69 games, 68 games.
And so we were talking about this.
I always feel with Lamar, you know, in baseball, Mike Trout is considered the best player.
He's never won a playoff series.
In the NBA, Russell Westbrook's not a great teammate.
We know that he'll be a Hall of Famer.
But in football, it's different.
You have to win games.
You have to win games.
And Lamar went six and one as a rookie, MVP, 11 and 5, and last year was a number one seed before he got hurt.
And there's all these critics.
I'm like, that's in a great division with the two best pass rushers and your left tackle was out last year.
He wins a lot of games.
But there's something about his delivery.
He runs too much.
I mean, I just go back to, I would sign him now.
If you wait for a year, you're going to pay him $12 million more a year, $8 million more a year.
Do you think there's still this thing hanging over Lamar Jackson about lack of respect around the league?
No, but I'll be completely honest with you.
I do this good morning football show every morning.
And I rave about Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, and Patrick Mahomes.
And I'm like, the AFC's in such great hands.
I've got these three great quarterbacks.
And I don't mention Lamar.
And that's like, okay, well, wait, what about Lamar?
Yeah, Lamar.
Lamar.
And that's just by top of mind, you're like, you have these highlight real thrones by Herbert and these amazing moves by Allen.
And then obviously, Mahomes was on a five touchdown performance.
It almost feels like Lamar could be an afterthought because their team wins 23 to 7.
But he threw three touchdown passes.
He didn't make a single mistake.
He got away from tackles.
They're not going to be doing any more negotiating.
They both agreed that we're going to push this to the end of the year.
And I'm curious what happens because the Ravens do own his rights.
They could still franchise tag him one time.
They could franchise tag him a second time.
But Lamar was made a healthy offer, and it wasn't what he decided is what he wants right now,
and he's going to bet on himself in a way.
I find it fascinating.
I think it's really cool.
And, you know, Lamar Jackson put on weight this year.
It looks like 10, 15 pounds a little bit heavy.
Not fat, not belly.
I'm talking like bulk.
And the offense, there's kind of a blueprint on what they do.
I mean, the Greg Roman offense, we've seen it for years, and yet he continues to win.
It calls your point.
You can't win a playoff game.
He goes into Tennessee and wins a playoff game.
He can't win against the top quarterbacks last year.
You know, he beats Mahomes.
Like, he's not at all.
And he's won an MVP.
So he should be in the same conversation.
Yeah.
Justin Herbert's never won a big game in his life.
And yet we're already crowning Justin Herbert.
Josh Allen's lost playoff games that, you know, you can argue he should have won.
We crown Josh Allen.
Maybe we don't give Lamar the same respect because he's not playing quarterback in the same
traditional way that we're seeing those other three guys.
Yeah, no, I think there's a lot of stuff to that is,
I mean, I'll even support Derek Carr.
Doesn't have a big arm, doesn't have a big frame,
drafted out of Fresno State second round.
And then you watch Derek Carr pull the Raiders and their chaos into the playoffs.
He still can't get a break.
If I put him in my top 12, people are just outraged.
It's like there's a certain look, big, strong pocket.
And if you're not that, you know, we kind of blanch at it.
All I know is...
This is another thing.
I don't mean to interrupt with Lamar.
It's like he wins the MVP in the next offseason.
every commercials Baker Mayfield and anti-stadium doing insurance ads, or it's Rogers, or it's one.
Lamar won the MVP was voted the number one player in the NFL by, you know, the NFL network
and had literally no marketing or no average.
It's a very interesting deal.
And a lot of that's because he might not have the same agency behind him.
He doesn't have a CIA or WME pushing his content.
But like, Lamar is a rare dude where he's all about football and he's not about always being
out there or promoting the brand or collecting the dollar.
I think some of the halo effect that is you talk about the Mahomes and Robbins.
Rogers, maybe a little bit more. By the way, finally, a couple of minutes left. Thursday night,
Herbert Mahomes. What's the chatter around the league? We're just, it's a gift. It's going to be
awesome. And these are two guys at the very peak of their games right now. Herbert was amazing
in Sundays win against the Raiders. He had Chandler Jones dangling off his leg and he threw
on almost like in a split. And then at the same time, you've got Mahomes doing what he does.
Herbert's two and two against Mahomes. It's not like the Chiefs own the Chargers. But last year,
in late in the season, about week 16 on a Thursday night game,
Chargers were up 21 to 13.
If they win that game against the Chiefs at home on a Thursday night,
they're probably in the playoffs.
They ended up losing Mahomes pulled a rabbit out of his hat with Tyreek and Kelsey.
I wonder if the Chargers still have that taste in their mouth.
And let's see if that revamped defense, if they've got something coming for the Chiefs this year.
Peter Schrager, great seeing you, bud.
Catch him, Fox NFL kickoff.
Sundays 11 Eastern 8 Pacific on Fox.
Thanks, bud.
Thank you.
Ratings were up big this week.
Sean Payton effect, Colin.
Yep.
Sean Payton effect helped us Monday as well.
Yeah, you mean the Lamar,
thing is the critics of him say, well, every year his completion percentage, well, he completes
about 65% of his throws. That's good enough. I've looked, you know, it's funny, Matt Stafford's the
classic prototype, right? Pocket, big arm, led the NFL in picks. Lamar doesn't throw the picks.
Also, Lamar had the deal with Pro Bowl left tackle Ronnie Stanley out last year, lost three running
backs. You know, you forget that. Like Aaron Rogers with a banged up O'Line and O'Donthe Adams scored
seven points against the Vikings. Nothing but excuses. Well, his old line was banged up. Lamar Jackson
was the number one seed last year in the NFL when he got hurt. The number one seat in the
AFC, Kansas City, Buffalo, number one seed in the AFC when he got hurt. No left tackle, lost three
running backs. That's Lamar. So to me, in baseball and basketball, and basketball,
basketball, it's more than just winning.
Football's about Ws.
That's why Eli Manning's a Hall of Famer.
He beat Brady twice in the Super Bowl.
Eli Manning's regular season, if you look at his numbers,
beat Brady twice in the Super Bowl.
You're a Hall of Famer.
It's not disputable.
You beat Belichick and Brady twice in the Super Bowl,
made two of the most iconic throws ever.
You're in the Hall of Fame.
Philip Rivers, by the way, has better numbers than Eli.
Didn't win enough.
It's not going to be in the Hall of Fame.
So my thing with Lamar is he wins a lot.
Career passer rating is almost 100, complete 64% of his throws,
bid an MVP, and wins 75% of his games in a division with the two best pass rushers.
Last year, he didn't have his left tackle.
And they were the number one seed when he got hurt.
They're winning because of one guy.
They're winning because of Lamar Jackson.
He's winning a lot of games.
He's the anti- Mike Trout.
Trout gets credit, can't carry his team to anything.
Lamar is carrying that banged up mess last year to the number one C before he gets hurt.
I don't know if I give him a contract extension.
I don't know how you don't.
There's nothing on the market like Lamar.
All right, Joel Clatt around the corner, a teaching moment for Clat.
I get to sit down as his, almost like the principal to a teacher.
It's the herd.
