Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:08 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
Starting point is 00:01:51 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio. It is a Wednesday. We are live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:02:38 It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. I am so excited for today's show and so excited for tonight. Net Celtics. This is the series I care about. NetSeltics. Now the Clippers broke my heart.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Nets Celtics tonight. I'm not leaving the house. No alcohol. total clarity, have to see the game inside the game. Joy Taylor, you know I'm into this series. This is here tonight. It's a great series. You see that other series that I'm into?
Starting point is 00:03:12 What was that of the Miami one? It's pretty well. I don't know. We might have a closer on our hands. Yeah. We'll see. This is going to be fun tonight. This is fun.
Starting point is 00:03:21 I can't wait for tonight. Okay. Ben Simmons may play. Maybe he doesn't play. He probably shouldn't play because that's just the way Brooklyn's been. So, boy, who you choose as a dance partner will determine how much fun you have at the dance. We are in year three of KD. and Kyrie, year three. If they lose tonight and their underdog, they'll go down 02 and have statistically a 7% chance to win, it'll be over.
Starting point is 00:03:53 And if they lose the series, here is what we get through three years. And by the way, these guys ain't getting younger. They're getting injured more. Year one, out in round one. Kyrie refused to play in the bubble. He got precious on it. Year two, Harden joined. All three hurt out in round two.
Starting point is 00:04:15 This year they lose tonight. They'll be out in round one again. Folks, if you were a couple of rock stars, And you broke up from the band and you joined and you had three albums, two were flops, and one was a very, very mild success. It didn't work. I mean, when Don Henley and Glenn Fry left the Eagles, Don Henley had multiple hits.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Glenn Fry had a number one hit and they got back together. They were like, we're better together. And they had multiple hits. In the Eastern Conference, without Kauai, without LeBron, in the Eastern Conference, Luz Tonight, it's, It's two first round exits and a second round exit and tons of injuries in drama. And then add this layer to it. Lucas heard in the West.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Devin Booker's hamstrings a problem. Lakers, clippers out. Here comes Golden State. Hmm. Flourishing. Best they've played all year. Clobbering Denver. Folks, it's going to be a bad couple of weeks potentially for KD and Kyrie.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Golden States flourishing without him, a very quick reboot. The Celtics are going to flourish, win this series potentially, without Kyrie. James Harden left him both, and he's going to win his series. And these two guys that are smarter than all of us, Katie and Kyrie have a little feel like all the Bitcoin NFT guys. You ever noticed that? 92% of people who invest in Bitcoin and NFT are renters. can't afford a home, but they're going to tell all of us the future of economics in America. Right?
Starting point is 00:06:01 NFTs are already cryptocurrency. Anybody's guess. But they're all experts. Katie, Kyrie, they knew better. They knew better than the Celtics tradition in Brad Stevens. They knew better than Golden State, Steph Curry, Clay Thompson, Draymond, and Steve Kerr. They knew better. A loss tonight.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Two first round exits and a second round. round exit. I'm sorry. Seven, eight years ago, people were arguing in my space, Joy Space, this talk space. Katie LeBron were one in one A. Come on now. If you break up with a successful band, join forces
Starting point is 00:06:45 with another rock star, three albums, two flop, others a mild success. Time to go back to the original band. time to go back. This is big tonight. And by the way, Brooklyn's an underdog. Kyrie flipped the fans off, so they're going to be in no mood for him. This is going to be the best first round game ever.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Tonight could be the most intense first round game in NBA playoff history. And legacies get formed on this stuff. They get formed. I mean, these are the moments where, my gut feeling tells me Katie and Kyrie win. My gut tells me they're going to figure it out tonight. They're not ready to wave that white flag.
Starting point is 00:07:34 They're going to give them everything, and it's going to be just magical. The villains go into Boston. They hate Kyrie and he scored. Now, I don't think Kyrie will be as good tonight. I do think Kevin Durant will rebound and put on an all-time epic performance. But this is going to be amazing. I don't preview games a lot.
Starting point is 00:07:50 This is going to be a great game. This is a big deal. You don't leave the band hoping for three albums and two flops. That's not why you left the band. You left the band because you wanted to prove I don't need the band. Don Henley's like, I can do hits without the band. He was right. The late Glenn Frye, I can do hits without Henley.
Starting point is 00:08:09 He got a number one hit. But they both admitted, let's get back together. The band was really, really good. We're better together than solo. These guys don't even have a hit yet. They don't have one song that's been top ten on the Billboard charts. Very excited. All right, let's talk about this. Pelicans beat the Sun's hamstring issue for Devin Booker.
Starting point is 00:08:29 I don't think he's out. He struggled with hamstring. That's kind of been his thing for the last couple of years. I think Phoenix wins a series. But Brandon Ingram's a former Laker. I don't know if you've noticed, but former Lakers had pretty good years. Let's see, Brandon Ingram has knotted up the series. He had 37 last night. Lakers certainly could have used Kyle Kuzma's 17.5.8.5 rebound average this year. Alex Caruso was averaging 13 a game. He's a plus defender. And Lonzo Ball was quite something until he got hurt in Chicago. Not surprising, a story comes out today. The Lakers job, according to the LA Times, is not that attractive to elite candidates. Why would it be? In the last 10 years, they've had seven losing seasons, and that's with Kobe, LeBron, and Anthony Davis.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Name the last player the Lakers have developed into a star. I'll give you a hand. hint, Kobe. That's it. Because college basketball now gives NBA teams 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds, you've got to be patient. Jordan Poole for the Warriors,
Starting point is 00:09:39 nine points first year, 12-point second year, 18-5th this year, and next year he's probably 22 points a game. They got themselves a star. But the Warriors have a history of drafting and developing and Dremon was a second round pick and Steph Curry and Clay Thompson and then they mix
Starting point is 00:09:55 really smart veterans like a KD or an Andre Igwadala. They have a history. Lakers don't. Lakers don't develop. That's not their thing. The Lakers are the Yankees. We just go pay for players. That's what's so magical about the Rams.
Starting point is 00:10:08 They're in a big city, but yet they draft develop and get stars. That's when you become potentially a dynasty. Lakers coaching search, not good. Brandon Ingram averaged 18 with the Lakers after three years. They bailed on him. Goes to New Orleans immediately averages 24. And according to my sources, he is loved there. He knows everybody's name in the building, hugs around the building, wonderful.
Starting point is 00:10:30 He was a really nice kid here. But he came into the NBA. He weighed about a buck 50 at 6-11. He was shy, kind of withdrawn. LA is kind of overwhelming, and it took him a while to get his feet under him. The minute he leaves L.A., smaller market, he's crushed. He's a great talent. It took him a while.
Starting point is 00:10:49 You remember when he came out here? It was skinny jeans. It was like, that kid needs, he's just a kid. He's 19 years old. He's flying through California. You couldn't put any weight on him. So it's very interesting, though. You start looking at great organizations.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Kansas City Chiefs right now, L.A. Rams right now, Dodgers Warriors. They not only have the ability to spot talent, but develop talent. Lakers aren't doing either. Like in that develop thing, a lot of times you get to a big market. By the way, the Yankees, not a lot of World Series titles lately. because the Dodgers, even though they can afford the big talent, do a really good job of drafting and developing their own. Yankees don't. And the Rams, even though they can buy the great talent, they draft and develop.
Starting point is 00:11:40 That's what the Warriors do. That's what the chiefs do. Folks, it is always a benefit to make more money in life. You can get better health care and you travel better and better schools, but you've got to be a good parent. Money's not going to make you a better parent. we're right next to Hollywood. A lot of rich people with crazy kids with lots of troubles. The reality with greatness in America in sports,
Starting point is 00:12:04 people fear the money in the big markets. Dan Snyder is one of the richest owners. New York Giants are a mess, sort of the New York Jets. Is it the Lakers are becoming like the Yankees and the Chicago Bears. They have this big brand and there's big money and game day revenue and they can But to be the chiefs and the Rams and the Dodgers and the Warriors, you can't just bail on the draft and develop part of the game. And the Lakers, the last guy they developed was Kobe.
Starting point is 00:12:34 They just bailed on all these guys. They bail on Brandon Ingram. They bail on Lonzo. And I understood bringing, I understood bringing LeBron here. But just because the Warriors brought in KD, it didn't mean they lost sort of their DNA on draft and develop. Jordan Poole, the minute he left was the next guy they drafted and developed and were patient with.
Starting point is 00:13:00 So shocking. Brandon Ingram now is a baller. When you draft kids at 19th. Think about this. In the NFL, you occasionally get a great player like a Jamar Chase is just, wow, wow, or Russell Wilson, wow out of Wisconsin. But those guys went three or four years of college. I mean, even LeBron, the greatest high school player ever, came into the NBA.
Starting point is 00:13:25 He wasn't a very good defender. He couldn't really shoot a jumper. And that's LeBron. Like Michael Jordan went to three years of college. He came out and he at that point wasn't a great teammate. He had to develop with Phil Jackson into a great teammate, not to just a great ISO score. So to draft and develop, I don't care if you're in a big city. I don't care if you're in New York or L.A.
Starting point is 00:13:48 that has to be part of the equation. It's not much for the Yankees. And the World Series titles, they're going to the Houston's and the Atlantis and the Dodgers. And seven losing seasons in 10 years. And now winning times out. And now it makes you remember how all the good times on top of the current mess.
Starting point is 00:14:09 All right, good stuff. More Kyler Murray drama in Arizona. Cannot wait for tonight. I'm going to go home and take a big nap today. to get prepared. This is one of those big sandwich. I'm not even going to open the fridge and look at the AM stills. Not even going to look at him tonight. No obstacles. Pure clarity tonight.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:15:00 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement
Starting point is 00:15:28 to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. Starting point is 00:16:42 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little camp? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:17:02 and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you're just so you, y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed Craig. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. So, oh. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more
Starting point is 00:17:29 important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Great to have you in. We have great conversations. a lot of times when we're off the air. A lot of stuff here. You know, I should do a podcast and just we should just call it off the air. We should record what we talk about off the air. And then after the show, just give people the off the air of this stuff.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Well, there are some reasons that we're talking about some of this stuff off the air. So, by the way, another teammate, I said this yesterday, Larry Fitzgerald was critical of Kyler Murray. If Larry Fitzgerald is critical of somebody, which he rarely is, I listen. Now, A.J. Green, a teammate of Kyler Murray, Arizona quarterback. This is becoming very Aaron Rogers. Another teammate or an ex-teamate is sort of, you know, willing to go public. Here's AJ Green on Kyler. You mentioned on just working with Kyler in that first year and having a chance to come back here.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Just how do you see your relationship with him and is there room for growth to get to get better, even though you've already spent a year together? Yeah, I think so. I think there's a lot, a lot of room. I think for me it's just, you know, communicating with him what I see or, you know, what he want me to do, how he want me to run this route. And I think last year I was a lack on my part. You know, I didn't really communicate with him about, you know, stuff like that because I don't want to put a lot of stuff on his plate. Now, that's being taken as a shot on Kyler Murray.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Whether it is or not, this is interesting. Both Green Bay and Arizona, because I see Aaron and Kyler is kind of the same. A lot of work. A lot of drama. willing to criticize and go out publicly through your agent or through yourself or through media leaks to make the organization look bad. The same guy. Both were really talented. But what are we left feeling with both of these guys at the end of seasons?
Starting point is 00:19:29 Oh, God, are they worth a headache? I mean, Aaron Rogers. Look at his last several playoff runs, last 15 playoff games. He's not a foxhole guy. He doesn't have a lot of come from behind wins if you compare him to his contemporaries. like Matt Ryan and Derek Carr, Russell Wilson. He's great when he's comfortable. When Aaron's not, he bales.
Starting point is 00:19:51 I say, is a bailer or not a baller? Great when comfortable. Kyler Murray, last three years. Not a galvanizer, not a leader. People have talked about that. What happened last three years? He's not available. He's not good.
Starting point is 00:20:05 He's hurt. He declines. The NFL's hard, and the quarterback position is the hardest of all the positions to play. and there is a leadership makeup. I never feel with Mahomes or Josh Allen or Peyton Manning or Russell Wilson or Tom Brady or Matt Stafford. I never ever think, God, is it worth it? That's all I think about with Aaron and Kyler now. That's their brand.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Yeah, they're great. Yeah, they're talented. Absolutely special. And both organizations have to pay them because they're trapped. But, God, is it worth it? And the answer currently with both is, yeah, it is. Right now it is. But I believe Green Bay and Arizona would bail on both if they could.
Starting point is 00:20:50 They can't, so they won't. And remember what Chris Mortensen said in February? His tweet was, there's an odd vibe between the Cardinals and Murray. It's alarming. Murray's described as self-centered, immature, finger pointer. Murray's frustrated with a franchise, embarrassed by the playoff lost to Rams, thinks he's being framed as the scapegoat. You think you'd get that, honestly, from Russell Wilson or Burrow?
Starting point is 00:21:15 I don't know. Mahomes, Josh Allen. I just don't think Lamar Jackson. I just don't think you'd get that. I think Kyler and Aaron, because of their makeup of their personalities, there's a reason why we're disappointed at the end of seasons, more than other great quarterbacks. Because this is hard.
Starting point is 00:21:34 You have to be a foxhole guy. You have to be about others, not yourself. and the words that come up with Aaron and Kyler are always the same. Self-centered, a lot of ego, finger-pointers. Boy, Aaron's a finger-pointer. That's indisputable. But right now, are they worth it? Is it worth it?
Starting point is 00:21:54 The answer is yes for both. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, let's stick with drama, shall we? Debo Samuel wouldn't report to 49ers camp without a new contract, which was being reported, and a new report yesterday suggests that his ultimate goal may be to leave the organization entirely.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Schaefter indicated that the Niners are more than willing to give Debo a new contract more in line with his market value, but that Samuel has put a halt to everything and he may not want a new deal from the 49ers at all. Debo Samuel's brother also made multiple social media comments indicating that Debo wants to be traded and that he won't be a member of. of the Niners. Debo's removed all evidence from the Niners from his social media accounts, which is the new way of saying, I am unhappy. Oh, God. I actually don't have a problem with this. It's kind of a, it's a new thing, obviously. It feels a little juvenile. I mean, it sends a message. You know, it is your platform. So, you know, different people use that platform to illustrate different things about their current statuses. You know what? If I don't like the coffee tomorrow here, I'm, I'm taking
Starting point is 00:23:08 Fox off all my social media. I feel like you should use it for something a little more pressing. We have great coffee here. We do. We do. We actually have excellent coffee. Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star Telegram tweeted that Samuel wants to be the highest paid
Starting point is 00:23:24 non-quarterback in the league. I can't do that. I can't go there. I can't. He's been hurt. He came into a camp out of shape. I love him. But I also know Kyle Shanan has a history of taking you know, players, like, 11 Elijah Mitchell in the sixth round and we're like, is he a pro bowler?
Starting point is 00:23:41 Like, George Kittle was not a first or a second rounder. Like, there is something to be said here about the coach gets some credit for. Sean Payton did this this whole career. He took good and made it great. And Kyle Shannon is very creative. I think Shannon said right before we came on, if I make this move for Debo, am I going to be able to use Debo Samuel the way that Kyle Shanahan uses Debo Samuel? Because that is a question.
Starting point is 00:24:04 We know that he's talented, but it can also be that you're being elevated by. the platform and the system that you're in. Well, you know where he actually fits is Green Bay because LaFleur runs some of, some of Shanahan's principles. So I think Shanahan's schematically at a different level than all these young coaches, including McVeigh. But I mean, Green Bay would be perfect, but I doubt San Francisco would move him to a place that they know is going to be a barrier for their success.
Starting point is 00:24:34 Well, he's on, he's, has one year remaining on his rookie deal. understanding him wanting to get his money right now. And when you look at his numbers, he's very much in that range. Last year, he had played 16 games. He had 77 receptions for over 1,400 yards. Remember, that's with Jimmy Garapolo, six receiving touchdowns, 365 rushing touchdowns,
Starting point is 00:24:57 and eight, I mean, yards and eight rushing touchdowns. So let's compare him to say a Tyree kill last season. Yeah. Had 111 receptions, over 1,200 yards, nine receiving touchdowns, 9, 96 rushing touchdowns. yards. So he is a very dynamic and productive player when he is available. You can't have questions about whether the system is, but I also understand him wanting to get paid. Now, if I was Debo, I would want, now, who knows what's going on internally here that things have become so
Starting point is 00:25:23 disruptive. Right. But I would want to stay in a system where I've had success with a quarterback that most people do not feel is a high-level starter. And certainly the Niners don't since they brought in Trey Young. Yeah, I mean, Shanahan's quoted in the story. I'm sorry. Shanahan's quoted in the story saying I would encourage or strongly recommend. I would like to see him sign. So Shanan wants him. I think Lynch wants him. This is morally, this is mostly Debo stepping back, not the Niners. Niners are off from a contract. That's not the issue. He wants to be the highest non-paid quarterback, which I can't pay him. Aaron Donald could maybe get that. There's players I would consider for that. If you're talking production,
Starting point is 00:26:02 you could make an argument Cooper Cup could get that based on insane production. Yeah, I mean, look, I'll never say never, especially with the value that Y receivers are getting on the market right now. But this could be something that lingers throughout the offseason. I think the draft is going to change for the guys that are still sort of floating out there in these contract trade spaces. The draft is going to settle a lot of things down in two weeks. So Deshaun Watson showed up yesterday at Brown's voluntary offseason workouts. So voluntary workouts. Voluntary.
Starting point is 00:26:34 The team posted a picture of him walking into the facility with the caption, QB1 in the building. Although it does look like he's outside. Yeah. Brown's even screwed that up. A little dad joke in there. Baker Mayfield did not report to the workouts. Not terribly surprising. Yeah, that's not.
Starting point is 00:26:52 I mean, we know Baker's not. So I'm not going to hold Baker accountable. No, I would not report to. Why would I be there? Well, first of all, he's still rehabbing his shoulder. If you replace me on my show, I'm not showing up to the company picnic, okay? I'm probably not going to show up. I've had plenty of critiques of Baker, him not going to the voluntary
Starting point is 00:27:09 off-season workouts after rehabbing and Deshawn Watson being there is not a big deal. We have Bakers back on that one. Sure. I disagree with the decision. I'll go that far. Now, he's not expected to show up at all. He is due $18.86 million guaranteed, and that's going to obviously make it harder to trade him. I did see today a little news about him possibly going to the
Starting point is 00:27:34 Steelers if they cut him. Baker? Or, or, oh, okay. Yeah, I believe it was, yeah, Jeff Tarlington. The Steelers would sign Baker Mayfield the very next day if he was cut. All right. I would not do that, Pittsburgh. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Oh, the mighty have fallen. Yeah. So, we're just doing, we're doing drama for the, for the start of the show. That's what we're doing today. Winning time is an excellent show in my humble TV watching. Very entertaining. I think it's very entertaining. But many of the people who are portrayed in the show are unhappy about how they're being portrayed.
Starting point is 00:28:04 one such person is Jerry West. So he had his lawyers contact production, demand a retraction, apology, and damages for what he is calling a baseless and a malicious assault on his character. Oh, that's a strong wording. Very strong.
Starting point is 00:28:20 His lawyers also are saying that winning time falsely and cruelly portrays Mr. West as an out of control intoxicated rage aholic, which bears no resemblance to the real man. Now, they also said that HBO's disclaimer because when you watch the show at the beginning or at the end, whatever, it has a
Starting point is 00:28:39 disclaimer that says this is, this is a Hollywood show, this is like depicting characters, this is not real, it's a dramatization. It does not like accurately and perfectly reflect these happenings. It's based off of a book. Now, there's, there's some issues with magic's portrayal, Kareem. They also included statements from Kareem, Michael Cooper and Mitch Kupchek, saying it's not an accurate depiction of Jerry West. I will say this about the show entirely. One, I think it's great. I actually think it's doing wonders for the Lakers right now because they're down bad.
Starting point is 00:29:13 And this is actually an interesting journey down the history of how they were, how they rose to their greatness. Yeah. Is it dark in spaces? Yes. Are we learning anything? No. Jerry West is my favorite character in the show.
Starting point is 00:29:29 It's great. It's wild. I don't think this is how Jerry actually behaved, 24-7? Okay. Hollywood did a movie about Jesus and embellished. They can embellish about basketball players. Secondly is, I don't think anything less of any of the Lakers. I know. No, Jerry West, we know about his battles with depression. He was very intense. They portray him as that. We know that Kareem was an odd fit as a pro athlete. He's so academic, so stoic. He could be prickly. We see that. We know.
Starting point is 00:30:03 know magic was gregarious, a little bit immature initially, a little bit of a player, and we see that. And we know Norm Nixon didn't like when Magic took the team over. We see that. They're embellishing all of it. And Dr. Bus. But he had quite a time. So my point is on this, there's parts of each character that are very accurate, and all
Starting point is 00:30:26 of them are embellished. But I don't think for one second, less of Magic, Kareem, Jerry West, Pat Riley. No. I don't, or for that matter, Jesus. I understand the movie and I understand what Hollywood does. Right. I find them all actually to be more relatable because of the show. Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:44 It adds a layer of complexity to the story and the characters. I used to do caricatures, caricature drawings, right? Yeah. Like sell them at the mall. Oh, you did? Yeah. I'd be like, you want me to draw you for $10. And you'd sit down and I would tell you this is a caricature.
Starting point is 00:31:00 This is not a portrait. A portrait is supposed to be the pinnacle of accuracy. It is supposed to accentuate the best things about you. That is a portrait. A caricature or a dramatization is supposed to emphasize your personality. So I would draw someone's ears extremely big if they were slightly underline. Or my nose. Or a nose.
Starting point is 00:31:21 Or if your hair was large, you'd be this large. You accentuate things about the character. That is what a dramatization is. nobody thought Jerry West was a cuddly little sweetheart. Nobody thought Dr. Bus wasn't in these streets. There's nothing that we're learning in this show. Listen, it's not me, so it's very easy for us to say. And sometimes when people do impressions of you, it can be, it can bother you.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Like you can think like, oh, wow, is that really how I talk? Is that really how I walk? Is that how I dress? So I get it. But I would say, maybe you just lean into embracing the show. Fans like it. I think it's great. I think it's a nice trip down memory lane.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Now, Kareem, today. on substack, he writes articles, and Kareem is, there's an argument to be made, he's the most intellectual athlete in the history of the country. I mean, he's really brilliant. And he just takes Adam McKay apart, and it's really cutting not on its, I mean, he talks about, it's just not funny. He said it's boring, which is the worst thing you can tell me is the show, I'm just bored with it. I don't care if you like me, but he tells Adam McKay, it's boring. That cuts. But it's, his, Kareem understands, I understand the embellishment part of this. I think, and Jerry West early in it comes across his crazy town.
Starting point is 00:32:36 But then the rest of it, I felt like they portrayed Jerry as sort of, let's be honest, during the coaching situation, he was the cool hand of guidance. Right. He was the one making sense. Yeah, like Jerry becomes like what he was, which is our coaching situation is a wreck. He talked everybody off the ledge for many of the shows. I just feel like it's something. To me, I find it very entertaining. It is entertaining.
Starting point is 00:33:01 I find it a little bit endearing. No, I don't think everything that happened in the show actually happens, but I have a brain that can process that this is Hollywood. I just think, like, it's nice to reminisce sometimes and have it be portrayed. And I think they're doing a great job with it. I don't know. Maybe I'm on an island here. But I like, I can't wait for next week.
Starting point is 00:33:21 Like, I can't wait for you to watch this week and see how they portray Larry Bird. I would like to watch it, but I have the net cell. politics tonight. I can't squeeze it into my hoop schedule. Exactly. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. Nick Wright is riled up about many things, including his height.
Starting point is 00:33:43 We will discuss all of these coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVore Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast. podcast called Up on Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushmanzada and Super Bowl champion.
Starting point is 00:34:06 Yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it. Up on Game. We're going to be sharing our real-life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up on Game with me, LaVar Arrington, T.J. Hushman Zada and Plexico Burris on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast from.
Starting point is 00:34:31 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:34:54 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:35:22 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be.
Starting point is 00:35:53 Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:36:14 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:36:41 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:37:08 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. And I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You want to shop, finance, purchase your next car from anywhere you want. Go to driveway.com. Transparent, no haggle prices. Driveway.com. Auto does easy. All right, Nick Wright, co-host, first things first. He is all fired up.
Starting point is 00:37:46 So tonight, KD, Kyrie, legacies on the line. I do like the Nets to beat Boston. But let's start with this, Nick. Celtic fans in Kyrie, I mean, you know, they have a history. Kyrie doing what he's doing. What did you make of that, first of all? Well, listen, I'm not a pearl clutcher when it comes to grownups yelling back at other grownups who are yelling at them. I think the silliest thing we do in sports television is blur out middle fingers.
Starting point is 00:38:17 I'm not sure what's being achieved there. I'm not sure who's like, oh, thank goodness that was blurred. I don't know what it means now and my kids are safe. With that said, like, so, Colin, I am not, you know, Kyrie Irving. However, I have been to Mother's Day 2018. I went to TD Garden to watch Cavs Celtics, maybe not a great marriage choice, but a choice I made all the same. And guess what, Colin?
Starting point is 00:38:40 I had some not nice things said to me, and I looked around and I said, yeah, I've probably brought some of this on myself. And here's what I didn't do. Flip people off because I'm like, I'm a public person. So do I think it's the mature response? No, I don't think it's the mature response. Am I super bothered by it?
Starting point is 00:38:58 No. Am I really fascinated to see what he does tonight as far as playing and reacting? Yes, because I don't think the Celtic fans are going to all of a sudden take it easy on him. I don't think that's a likely outcome here. So I think it's, I said this before. if a couple of rock stars left and form their own band,
Starting point is 00:39:17 and they had two flops and a very mild success, you get the band back together. And you got two first round exits and a second round exit. If they lose tonight, that'll give, because you're not going to come back after 02. You have 7% chance. And then a second round exit. So, I mean, even Glenn Fry and Don Henley, I'm showing my age,
Starting point is 00:39:35 they had hits and they got back together with the Eagles and said, we're better together than apart. You lose tonight. I think the importance of this thing is, massive, in my opinion, Nick, you. Wow. Well, I just lost a massive wager because I laid plus 60,000 that Glenn Fry, Don Henley, and Jesus
Starting point is 00:39:54 would not be mentioned in the first hour of today's show and you hit the trifecta. So I'm out of money, first of all. Second of all, listen, I don't think the Nets will feel dead if they lose tonight. I think the reason the Nets are dead is because they had to win game one.
Starting point is 00:40:11 Now, if they lose tonight, what they'll say is, hey, series doesn't start until the road team wins a game. We were supposed to lose. We'll go back to Barclays. Barclays, by the way, which I would imagine will probably be 50% Celtic fans anyway. But the reason the Nets are dead, Colin, is you've got to win the great Kyrie game. They didn't. You've got to close out up three with 45 seconds left.
Starting point is 00:40:36 And it's not just that they didn't close it out. The final three possessions of that game, Colin, it was two Celtic layups. and a Nets contested 28-footer. Like, one of the advantages, theoretically you should have in this series if you're Brooklyn, is at the end of the game, we have two killers in Durant and Kyrie,
Starting point is 00:40:56 and the Celtics don't. Tatum's historically not been great in those situations, and he's the only guy on Boston you would go to in those spots, and they blew that one. But I'm, listen, I'm sure Brooklyn fans and faithful will convince themselves they're fine if they lose tonight. Hey, Ben Simmons might be walking. through that door for 10 minutes, if that'll help you.
Starting point is 00:41:16 But I just think they're not well enough, coach. They're not deep enough and they don't defend well enough in order to really be able to push Boston here. By the way, Kyle Kuzma had a good year. Lonzo Ball was rolling. Alex Caruso is a plus defender. And Brandon Ingram had 37 last night. I will say this. The Warriors have stars and they draft and develop.
Starting point is 00:41:38 The Rams have stars and they have 14 starters they drafted and developed. Lakers haven't developed anybody since Kobe. Like, Brandon Ingram now is an All-Star. Isn't it an indictment on the Lakers? I don't know. So they told me you're going to say that. I don't understand how it's an indictment on the Lakers. They drafted Brandon Ingram.
Starting point is 00:41:58 He's a good player. They traded him for a player who was the second best player on a champion. Like, that part, I don't understand how it's an indictment. Now, just making the KCP Kuzma trade for Russ is a disaster, letting Caruso walk because God forbid the Lakers paid more of a luxury tax bill. You're the damn Lakers. That's a disaster. But we seem to like do this.
Starting point is 00:42:20 The same thing was being said last year, Colin, about Julius Randall. It's like, oh, Lakers really screwed that one up. Look at Julius Randall. I'm not hearing so much about that this season. I like Ingram a lot. But I just, would you, if they had to go over and do it again, would you not have traded for Anthony Davis? You won the title.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Well, yeah, but now you're, stuck with a bloated contract than a guy that never plays. Ingram's just moving into his peak probably for the next seven years. If you gave me both today, I'd take the guy moving into a peak, not moving out of it. But you'd lose a championship. But you'd have to give up the title. Yeah, but I mean, the Lakers aren't the Mets. They've got a lot of them. You know, I'd rather have a future. Yeah, I would. You'd rather, the lake. Okay. Listen, Colin, the point of sports is to win titles. They won a title.
Starting point is 00:43:17 So hold on a second. Let me just ask you real quick. Do you think the Clippers, if they could, should undo the trade that got them, well, Paul George, but it was a Kauai and Paul George package? Or do you think that was a good trade? Well, that's different. They're the Clippers. One title makes the franchise, totally makes the franchise.
Starting point is 00:43:39 The Mets. If the Mets win one world series with Buck Showalter in seven years, it makes the organization. Yankees, Ohio State football, Bama, they got a collection room of trophies. I wouldn't give up eight years of my future for one bubble title. One bubble title. This whole bubble title, stop saying bubble title, first of all. That's unnecessary. Second of all, you're right about the clippers being the clippers.
Starting point is 00:44:07 But what's also true is you're like, no, I'd still go do that again, because won title so valuable to the Clippers, but they didn't win a title. Paul George and Kauai have played zero career conference finals games together. The Lakers won the title. And while, yes, historically they have been amazing, the six years leading up to that title were the worst six years in the history of the franchise. This is a weird thing folks are doing, which is Katie and Kyrie came together, Paul George and Kauai came together, LeBron and AD came together all in the same summer.
Starting point is 00:44:39 LeBron and Anthony Davis have won a title. Katie and Kyrie have not played a single playoff game together after round two. Kauai and Paul George are not played a single playoff game together after round two. And the pairing that gets the most crap is the Lakers. The whole point is to win titles. They won a title. The other two teams haven't even been close to it. You guys are out of your mind.
Starting point is 00:45:00 But I'm also mad at you today. I was going to say there's, you know, listen, Nick's a handsome guy. There was a beautiful life. There was a stage in his life where he had a growth spurt and it wasn't gorgeous. He's something about, he doesn't love his height or something. So there's a picture out there of Nick and I just poked him in the ribs a little guy. You're really going to bother me here. So look, this is me and Kevin Wilde.
Starting point is 00:45:26 I don't know what they did to this photo, but it makes us both look like we're 5'4. Yeah. And I shouldn't joy. I should be self-confident enough. I shouldn't care. I know it's vain. I know it's whack to care about this. But I hate that people think I'm short
Starting point is 00:45:41 when I'm almost 6'1. So Colin Coward, my mentor, my one-point professional idol, sees this. And look at what Colin tweets. Colin, he knows how much this is bothers me because that, nice to see my little friend Nick
Starting point is 00:45:57 is smiling and happy. Then don't show the next picture yet. Then the big lead, which used to be owned by a colleague of ours, they have an article of us. How tall is Nick Wright really? And they land on 5-7. And this is all because of you.
Starting point is 00:46:13 So, I'm going to ask you a question, Colin. Don't lie to your audience. How tall are you? 6-2. Okay, show the next picture. Total full exoneration. Five years ago, me and Colin Cowherd, before I had hair when I was leaving L.A. to move to New York.
Starting point is 00:46:31 Colin came and saw me because he used to be my friend. He was like, Nick, I'm not going to let you leave without giving you a hug. You're an inch taller than me. This is outrageous. It's just outrageous that you have pushed this. I need Joy to back me up. This whole thing is. I mean, Colin is kind of leaning in that picture.
Starting point is 00:46:50 Joy? I'm two and a half inches taller. I've known leaning. No. Two and a half inches. I can confirm Nick is actually the height he's saying he is. Yeah. But there's nothing wrong with being a short king.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Yeah. Nothing wrong. That's right. That's right. Listen, he's the Calvin Murphy of talk shows. Here's what I will tell you, Nick. Because this is a good lesson for you. Because men are always making fun of women because we want a certain angle.
Starting point is 00:47:16 You need to take it from this side or whatever. Angles matter. Why do you think I look amazing in every single one of my selfies? If you notice, they're all the same angle. That's right. It's my angle. So you got to find your angle. Well, they're all the same angle.
Starting point is 00:47:30 And it would appear you have a professional videographer that follows you around as documented by your tour of Paris, which everyone, I think there's a camera light, there's everything going on. But that's fine. Listen, I'm not making fun of anybody, and I know how ridiculous this is. I'm on national television
Starting point is 00:47:47 on Colin Gower and Joy Taylor's show talking about my height. But I've gone through life with confidence of don't care about the nose, don't care about the ears. I have big ears. No one even knows this because of the nose. Don't care about the squeaky voice.
Starting point is 00:48:00 I hate that people think I'm short. And Colin adding to it really is thrown my whole deal. I will confirm. I will confirm. Nick is not short. All right. We got to run.
Starting point is 00:48:12 But there's nothing wrong with the short king. First things first. By the way, Per Jeff Darlington, Debo Samuel has asked the Niners trade me out of San Francisco. I wouldn't do it. They'll trade him to the AFC and he'll disappear.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Why? Because the AFC's got like nine Super Bowl teams. I think Debo Samuel, sometimes there's just, I'm not, you guys can all go make your money, but there's a story out today. Cooper Cup says, I want to be paid but not top of the market. It's a good fit.
Starting point is 00:48:39 I think Debo and Kyle Shanahan, Debo, that's the best fit in the league for you. I don't know. I don't know, Debo. It's the herd. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an
Starting point is 00:49:03 a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
