Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the ice planet, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Ah, here we go on a Friday. We are ready to roll. Live in Los Angeles, it's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1, one hour from now off a winning week. Yes, and a winning opening week. I love my picks this week. I love my picks this week. Love, love, love, love, love.
Starting point is 00:02:55 One hour, blazing five. Jason Mac. J-Mack, joining us. He's new to the show. I've got to get the name down. Boy, was that? That was so
Starting point is 00:03:07 Chargers. They dominate the first half. And you look up and you're like the stat sheet and the Chiefs win. I think we agree. Chargers were the better team last night. I think their roster is outside of Buffalo the best in the league.
Starting point is 00:03:23 So listen, you can say, well, Justin Herbert. was injured. All right, but he made some great throws even when he was injured. Well, they lost their Pro Bowl center at half. Corey Lindsley. Well, they only scored 10 points in the first half when they had him. Well, Keenan Allen didn't play. That, I think, is fair. I said that yesterday on the show. I like the Chiefs because Keenan Allen wasn't available. He's really valuable, big third down receiver downfield. But we saw two very predictable things last night. The Chiefs fell behind, came back to win. Mahomes made four or five amazing throws and they beat somebody in the
Starting point is 00:04:02 AFC West. In fact, Mahomes wins 55% of his games in the last four years in which he falls behind by 10 points or more in the first quarter. He wins 55% of those. The league wins about 15%, not name of Holmes. So it's what they do. And it's what you saw. But it was also what the chargers do. They appear to dominate chunks of games like the first half. They have great players everywhere making great plays and they lose. If you just took the box score today, the Chargers had 30% more first downs, 30% more passing first downs, 20 more plays, 100 more passing yards, were in the red zone twice as much, dominated time of possession, more completions, more this, more that and lost. That is so Chargers, it hurts. And I got to tell you something, you were witnessing
Starting point is 00:04:59 two great quarterbacks. This is just great. You're going to see these guys play two times a year minimum for the next 10 years, maybe 15. But I don't like the Chargers offense. And they have a defensive coach, and he's young inexperienced, and it drives me crazy. I think young star quarterbacks need offensive coaches. Be that as it may, Sean McDermott's been successful, but not successful enough to beat Mahomes with an offensive coach, and I watch the Chargers offense. It's not clever. It doesn't surprise me. It's kind of bashful, and it's incredibly predictable.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Justin Herbert's got a top five arm in this league. As Warren Sharp, a smart dude works for Fox, pointed out last night, Herbert had just two pass attempts all night thrown over 17 yards downfield. By the way, he was two for two for 74 yards. 15 attempts were behind the line of scrimmage. Well, calling that pass rush. Well, it's not like Mahomes didn't face Bosa and Kaleel Mack. Two passes over 17 yards.
Starting point is 00:06:05 That's like two as offense as a rookie. You're Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford. That's what you give a quarterback. Mitch Trubisky. Burrow, Mahomes, Alan, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, let it rip. Go downfield. this offense is leaving points and plays and yards on the table.
Starting point is 00:06:26 It's just not clever. You know, it's funny. I watched USC with Lincoln Riley. He's got college kids and his manipulation of personnel. He's got running backs going deep down the field. It's clever. It surprises me. It's very Kyle Shanahan.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You don't know which way you're going. The Chargers line up, drop back in the pocket, throw too often under the sticks. It doesn't work for me. Meanwhile, Mahomes, the best in the league coming from behind, has to play a new way because of Tyreek Hill's departure. And it was interesting what Mahom said after the win last night. That's what we said going into camp. It's going to be everybody. It's not going to be one guy.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Justin Watson came in when McColl was a little banged up and he got McCulls route and he won against a pro bowl, all-pro corner. And so for guys like that to make their imprint on the game, that'll help us out as we get into these tough games like this, that we can get touchdowns and stuff like that from everybody. So the Chiefs, that's a very important soundbite. So the first two games for the Chiefs, have you noticed something? Have you noticed the alteration? So Tyreek Hill was the ultimate cleanup hitter. Big play, Tyreek Hill. alters the field, tilts the field.
Starting point is 00:07:51 And Mahomes often sought big plays. The way to stop Mahomes, the word was, just take away the big play. Make him be patient. But that's hard to do when you still have Tyreek Hill, right? It's like saying, don't worry about home runs if you have Aaron Judge batting cleanup, right? Like they had Tyreek Hill. It's hard to tell the quarterback. He's the world's fastest football player.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Don't be reliant on the big play. Well, it was hard for Bradshaw when he had Lynn. Swan. It was hard for Montana when he had Jerry Rice. It's hard when you have a great deep threat and an explosive player, right? We all know that. But this year, now Tyreeks out. And 11 different receivers have caught a pass in two games. Six different chiefs have a touchdown. He's more patient. He's taking the underneath stuff. So Mahomes loses his top home run hitter. And there's no doubt in anybody's mind, I've been saying this all offseason. He'll be just as productive. It'll be a different offense, but he'll be just as productive.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Aaron Rogers loses his top receiver. They score seven points in the opening game. Both have offensive coaches, both have excellent organizations, both always had better than average offensive lines. I would argue Aaron Rogers plays in a much easier division, in a much easier conference, and has more NFL experience. But yet with Aaron, discombobulates. With Mahomes, he's amenable to change. And this is the unspoken greatness of Patrick Mahomes. He is so dynamic to watch. Just think about how important the visual effect is. They say that better-looking people make more money. Taller people make more money. There's no blue food. Have you ever noticed this? What's the last thing you ate was blue? Because you eat with your eyes.
Starting point is 00:09:40 You eat with your eyes. There's no blue food. Nobody wants to eat. blue food. So with Mahomes, we're awestruck by his arm and his talent. It's a firework show. And we don't give his brain credit, his coachability credit, his amenable style to change, his willingness to adapt. Tyreek Hill leaves, it's like you're watching a kid go, oh, I'm going to be more patient, I'm going to throw underneath, I'm going to take what they give me, I'm going to throw to 11 receivers, one off season. Go, go, go, go, go. Totally changes. Aaron loses his top guys.
Starting point is 00:10:17 He's got a bunch of young guys. Aaron, remember the soundbite this week when asked about the opening performance, about, you know, changing and adapting to the young players? Here's how Aaron responded. I mean, I got to play the same way. I don't play the way I played in 2011. It's, you know, I got to play on time and guys got to get open. So, no, I'm not going to change the way I play.
Starting point is 00:10:43 we just have to realize who's out there who we're thrown to and how we're going to actually make some hay and score some points. I am not going to change. I play the way I play. I'm not going to make alterations. Mahomes, hey, we just got to make it work. We got to get these guys involved. We got to make it work.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Last night, Mahomes, a touchdown to a fifth round pick on his second team. A touchdown to a third round pick on his third team, a journeyman. 11 different receivers, six different guys caught touchdowns. We, we, we, we, we, we elevation of others. We, Aaron. I am not going to change. I have to throw this way. I have to do it this way.
Starting point is 00:11:27 That's the difference. That is the difference. So when you tell me Aaron's better than Mahomes, I don't want to hear it. You don't get sports. It's not about the I. It's the we. You are leading an offense. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:40 And Mahomes, in an offseason, when he lost his receipts, He's like, it's like, it's incredible. He's way more patient than last year. Throwing it to everybody this year. They took away something. And I, and I, and I would say this. I defend Mahomes. It's easy to say, hey, don't throw the deep ball.
Starting point is 00:12:00 But when you have Tyreek Hill there, you're going to want to make big things happen. You can't have a power hitter like Aaron Judge and tell everybody we're going to be a finesse team. You lean into his power. Okay. He's like dominating the sport. But the minute Tyree kills gone, look at Mahomes adapt. Guys on their third team, fifth round picks, third round picks, new guys, stars gone. He's got a packer.
Starting point is 00:12:24 He's got a stealer. He's got three rookies. Making it all work. Don't tell me Aaron's better than Mahomes. Save your breath. He plays in a tougher division than Aaron, and now a tougher conference. He's got Derek Carr twice a year, Herbert twice a year, Russell Wilson twice a year. Aaron's got Kirk cousins twice a year
Starting point is 00:12:46 Gov twice a year at Justin Fields Sunday and he's going to roll them and we're all going to say see Aaron's back anyway there we go there's my rant on last night so I saw something you know you ever you ever been the person in the family that you're a saver you save your money you don't waste your money and you have brothers and sisters and maybe even a cousin or a parent and they just they money burns a whole
Starting point is 00:13:15 hole in their pocket. And you tell them, you know, you got to put money away for a rainy day. Sometimes, you know, the money faucet runs out. You know, save your money, spend it on stuff you need, save it for a rainy day. And you tell them that year after year after year, after year, and you see they keep screwing it up. Keep being broke. Keep needing money. Keep being desperate. Some people just don't learn. And they're just going to be stubborn and they're not going to save and they're going to spend every penny they've got. And I saw a story yesterday and the people that have been wrong like nine times are going to be wrong again.
Starting point is 00:13:56 They're going to go 0 for 10. And I'm going to be right for the 10th time on this. But it won't matter because I'll get nothing but pushback when I say it. That's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only. legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:14:18 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app,
Starting point is 00:14:40 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:15:05 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:15:40 And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. You remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:16:25 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:16:45 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:17:31 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search learn the hard way and listen now. All right, welcome back.
Starting point is 00:17:49 My opinion here will be predictable. I will be right. You will be wrong and you will double down on it. But here goes. The San Francisco 49ers, owner, GM, and coach took a huge risk on Trey Lance. He barely played in college. They gave up three first round picks to get him. They're moving off Jimmy Garoppolo who got him to a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:18:12 It is a massive risk by the organization, the kind that people lose jobs. It's a big, big swing. Many of you will never have the opportunity to take a big risk with a big company. But know that Jed York, who owns them, John Lynch, who runs them, and Kyle Shanahan, who coaches them, took a big freaking swing. They had a pair, man. They took a big swing. And video surfaced this week of Trey Lance, awful in game one, has a touchdown favorite, gagging to the bear. can't complete 50% of his throws, making it rain at a strip club.
Starting point is 00:18:49 It's not the NBA, man. Got eight home games, got to win them, especially when you have a Super Bowl roster. It's not the end of the world, of course, nor was Jimmy G. Being caught with a porn star having dinner. But you all defended Jimmy G. And what happened four days later? The Niners Brass spoke out publicly and said, we expect better from a franchise quarterback. Of course, you never do.
Starting point is 00:19:11 according to the story, Twitter supported Traylans. Of course they do. Of course, Twitter supported it, but Twitter's not real life. Real life is people with big boy jobs, corner offices, with an owner who's a billionaire that will fire them if they take a big risk and miss. He's young. He went to a strip club. I did when I was young. But nobody knew who I was. I was doing an inning of play-by-play in sales in Vegas. I wasn't running the most popular franchise, arguably in the state of California. I know he's just having fun.
Starting point is 00:19:47 That's what you told me about Johnny Mansell. I said, no, no, no, he's immature. I was right. Cam Newton's just cool having fun. He's 33 out of the league. Brady's 45 and still runs it. Baker's just having fun. He's confident.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Cleveland bailed on him. Right, right, right. You wrong, wrong, wrong. And you'll be wrong on this and you'll defend him. It is not the end of the world. Nobody's saying it will. But I can guarantee you this. morning that John Lynch looked at that video and Kyle Shanahan looked at that video and they
Starting point is 00:20:18 also looked at the video of a quarterback who lost the Justin Fields and an awful Bears team. And they're thinking, two words, do better. Do better. It's a big difference between starring in a film and being one of the 38 actors who's in a scene. It's a big difference from running a company and being in the mail room. Frantz. franchise quarterback gets paid more and gets criticized more. You got to do better. Now, Summer's saying, well, it didn't happen this week. It was in the summer.
Starting point is 00:20:50 That probably helps a little. But again, this is an organization that took a huge swing on this. Make their life easier, not harder. And you could say, well, what if he won, Colin? Probably would be different. But he didn't. And he didn't play well. and the bears are awful and he lost to them to a quarterback that's just about the same age and same experience level.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Yeah, maybe it would be different if he won. And maybe it would be different if Johnny Mansell went 16 and O. And Cam Newton had back-to-back winning seasons once. Or Baker Mayfield was more consistently a winner. But my argument's always been, you tell me very early who you are and what you're not. And Mahalms has a little wacky brother. but boy, he is underwraps in the football season. So is Russell Wilson, and Tom Brady won't drink during the season.
Starting point is 00:21:46 It's not the end of the world. But shocker, Twitter gave him full support. It always does. Cam, Mansell, Baker, just having fun. All right. When you're unproven and an organization lean into you and you kind of stink so far, Have fun at home.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Jay Mack with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I think it's just understanding why we're losing those games. And there's reasons why in each game you look at, you know, you can look at them and look at why we won and why we lost the one time we beat them. And we just had to, it's got to be good football. You know, in offense, defense, special teams, there are too good of a team to think that you can
Starting point is 00:23:00 win one phase and win the games. It's a lot of things that lead to winning and losing, and obviously we haven't done a good job with that in the regular season. And, you know, we're going to have to play a lot better if we expect to win. You know, a lot of this is really simple. The Saints have a great roster. We don't love their quarterback, right? Like Breeze was old, James is mistake prone.
Starting point is 00:23:22 People forget Michael Thomas Jarvis Landry, good old line, great pass rushers, excellent corners. This is a really, really good Saints roster. want to go in on the video. Number one, Tom wearing a hat backwards. I'm surprised you didn't have a comment on that, but he looked a little thin to me. I don't want to overstate this stress stuff he's got going on. He looks a little, I don't want to say gaunt, but he looks thin, you know. Oh, no question. He looks thin. No, no, no. By the way, and you've noticed this. Is anybody noticed that Jalen Hertz and Lamar this year jacked up? Why? They're guys that run and get hit. So Jalen
Starting point is 00:23:54 Hertz looks noticeably yoked. Lamar looks yoked. He's put, Lamar's put on some pounds. So, Brady looks thin. Well, he doesn't live with his wife. Of course, it's stress. I don't think it's a reach. My first, watching him right there, he looks like he's lost 15 pounds. And he was kind of a tall, lean guy to begin with.
Starting point is 00:24:11 Yeah, I think we'll get to that game, Blazoned 5 maybe a little later. Oh, yeah, it's in it. Yeah, okay. All right, next up, Joe Montana and Steve Young were once part of their own little quarterback controversy. Similar to Trey Lance and Jimmy G. And Sanfran right now,
Starting point is 00:24:26 both former players think keeping Jimmy G was a good idea. Yeah, obviously, despite the potential for issues in the locker room. First up, here's Joe Montana. I think it's good that they brought him back. Yeah, they moved on, but they also know that they can win with Jimmy at least to a point. It gives them an option if Trey isn't getting it done. And here's what Steve Young said. Jimmy being there does not change the job. Jimmy's been fired. Kyle could not speak more forcefully that he does not want Jimmy to be a starter. If Jimmy is hanging around and your psyche is such that it causes you
Starting point is 00:25:00 grief, you're not going to make it anyway. Well, you could say Jimmy's been fired, and I do think the Niners beat Seattle. I do. Wait, wait, how can you say he's been fired when he's still in the locker room? No, I said they can say he's been fired. But if he lost
Starting point is 00:25:16 to Seattle, you and I know that they would have a call Sunday night between Jed York, John Lynch, and Kyle Shanahan. And if he lost and was ugly Sunday. They're going to say, basically, we got one more week. Whether that's fair or not, but we can say, well, it's the bullpen.
Starting point is 00:25:36 Listen, if your starters, Max Scherzer-Kershon, they're struggling in the third, you're already thinking about the bullpen in the fifth. So, I mean, the idea that if they look, and I think San Francisco is going to beat Seattle. I do as well. I do. I think they'll beat them. And it may be, I think Seattle, basically, the crowd almost influenced that game in a couple of fumbles.
Starting point is 00:25:53 So they'll win. Trey Lance will be fine. and he won't be great, it'll be fine. But if he did lose, let's not kid ourselves here. They're at least having a discussion on the bullpen. They're talking about it Sunday night. See, whoever was talking to Steve Young here, I would have said, Steve, remember when the dolphins kept Fitzpatrick,
Starting point is 00:26:10 and they quickly pulled to it when he was screwing up? Like, that's going to happen here. How can you not say this was a mistake? Well, the other thing that happens in football, you don't have in baseball and basketball. There's one game a week. So if you have a bad game as a starting quarterback, what does sports radio talk about for six days?
Starting point is 00:26:25 In baseball, there's another game if you have a bad outing. Basketball, you talk about a bad Laker night for a night, and then you have a game. But in football, that's why you see everybody says, what's the old Tyson thing, everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth. Everybody in the NFL says they have a plan until they lose. And they get barbecued by the local and national media, and everybody's getting their jobs on the line. So San Francisco is going to beat Seattle.
Starting point is 00:26:51 But if they lost, you and I know they're having a conversation. Just for context, George Kittle not practicing. Looks like he's a no-go this week again, and they're calling for some significant weather in San Francisco. Again, Trey Lids, cannot catch a break. All right, final story here. The Steelers plays T.J. Watt on IR. Means he's going to miss at least four games with this peck injury.
Starting point is 00:27:11 Pittsburgh's defense obviously is going to have to adjust. He's still got some good players on the deep. Oh, yeah. And tackle Cam Hayward is counting on other players to step up. Obviously, you don't want to play with a guy like that, but guys got to step up. We're not reamending the wheel. We're not going out there saying that we have to change up our entire scheme and stuff.
Starting point is 00:27:35 But we just got to make sure we do our jobs. You know, there's about, I don't know how many guys there are like this, but I can argue there's about 12 players in the league that are, they're just different. Like, there is no Aaron Donald. You can even have a pro bowler. it's really hard to duplicate Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson. I'm telling you, T.J. Watt and Miles Garrett, they're on a short list of there's just literally no way to replace them. You are going to be less relentless and have less of a pass rush.
Starting point is 00:28:07 If Miles Garrett goes down, Aaron Donald goes down, or T.J. Watt goes down. You just not, you can't replace them. It doesn't matter what your schemes are. We talk about the trenches a lot. You said Aaron Donald, did you see last night, Chris Jones did nothing in the first half? Corey Lindley gets hurt. Chris Jones is wrecking havoc, destroying. I mean, Herbert got killed part of it's because they lost two offensive linemen. Well, they did. And it also is, most GMs don't like to pay centers.
Starting point is 00:28:33 But once they got Herbert, they realized they had to get better at left tackle or center. Or you're going to see what you saw last night. Herbert may have a broken rib. Disappointing stuff. Yeah. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:28:48 The Hurd Lie News. Played in the NFL for 10 seasons of Fox Sports NFL analyst Mark Sanchez on a Friday. By the way, you had a big upset game Giants Titans. This week you've got a fascinating game, Falcons Ram. So before we get to either of those games, listen, I mean, last night is these guys are going to play 25 times, Holmes and Herbert. They're both great. There's nothing you can say. I will say this, though, Herbert clearly, I broke a rib a couple years ago.
Starting point is 00:29:18 I couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't get out of bed. He was taking shots with a fractured rib. I mean, and this is a big guy, Mark. He's bigger than you. Big guy. 6.5.2.30. He let him off the bus first.
Starting point is 00:29:29 He was wincing. And I'm thinking, this is like, this is next level stuff. Here's how you know he's an absolute baller and one of the toughest dudes out there. He can't, he can easily walk for a first down on that third and one. And he, he's like, ah, and just throws a ball away. A play later, two plays later on fourth down, just throws an absolute seed down the middle of the field. You're like, whoa, this guy. I mean, he demanded to go back in the game.
Starting point is 00:29:57 You could tell. You could see him and Staley on the sidelines like, yeah, okay, come on. Thank you, Chase. Like, no offense to Chase Daniel, but he was just like, come on, let's go. All you guys, people, I've had multiple NFL players say this. We tend to think quarterbacks are protected, but I've had multiple quarterbacks say by week four, something hurts. Oh, you're banged up. I mean, as soon as training camp starts, you're just a little sore, a little banged up, you know, something's tight, something's a little off, and you're constantly working on something. And that's going to, that's going to bother him a little bit.
Starting point is 00:30:30 And, you know, I don't love the narrative like, oh, well, it's a tolerance thing. Like, okay. Hurts, hurt. Yeah, like this dude, he's going to be hurting pretty good. And, you know, it sounds like everything's negative at the stadium, or at least it was. But he's, I mean, he'll be back as fast as anybody. I mean, he's just so tough. I was having a conversation. This was about 10 years ago. That wasn't an interception.
Starting point is 00:30:55 We're saying that's not an interception. I argued with the staff this morning. I don't know, coach. Hey. I don't know. I kind of lot it with a pack. I mean, rally and tackle second and seven. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:31:05 but what was that? You and I agree on that. Because that totally changed the game. They had a touchdown on that drive. The Chiefs scored a touchdown on that drive. I mean, just completely up. I don't want to be that guy. I know.
Starting point is 00:31:18 Because I'm an L.A. guy, right? So everybody thinks I'm a homer. No, it has nothing to do with that. I don't care if it was the Bills or the Ravens. It makes no difference to me. I was just like, ah, that looked good to me. I know. I mean, talk about the pick six.
Starting point is 00:31:31 It was like, you know. Tight end, quit. Well, he's trying to get out of the game. And then they're trying to go tempo and there's, you know, there's miscommunication. His deal, he's got a sprint. It's a foot race to the front pylon for him. Yeah. And he creates space.
Starting point is 00:31:45 And if you get them out leverage, great. You throw it to him right away. Boom, outside in to the back over the ball. And then you get the stick route and he would be working out where Justin starts to throw it. Yeah. It was just like, oh, it just started to unravel. And here's one of the things I want to give Mahomes credit for. So name it.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Yeah, not taking anything left from the chiefs. Nameth. Bradshaw, Farrv, Josh Allen, Mahomes. They're these guys that have great arms. It is easier if you're Derek Carr and have a good arm to not try to squeeze the ball in or Alex Smith. But I always give the guys with great arms, Elway had a lot of picks.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Namath, Fav, a lot of picks. It's hard when you can squeeze the ball in and you don't. Mahomes doesn't throw a lot of picks. Also last night took a ton of underneath things. And I think that's harder than people think. Again, if you're Tua, that's your game. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:42 But when you have a world-class arm and six straight throws, you've got to go underneath. I've heard this from coaches. I've heard it from my dad. Little piggies get fat. Hogs go to slaughter. You know what I mean? And it's real. It's so true because you start riding that arm strength.
Starting point is 00:33:01 You start feeling it. And yeah, I can make everything. throw out here and I can squeeze it in there. And the worst part is it's like, you know, hitting the fade away three-pointer. The worst thing that can happen is if it goes in, right? Because then you think, oh, I can do this. Right. I can get away with this. And then you try it again and boom, there goes the ball the other way, boomerang ball, right? Goes one way right back the other way. But he's the maturation and the growth from him from college because he threw a ton of picks in college. And that was like a red flag for him. Right. But then he gets behind Alex Smith for a year,
Starting point is 00:33:32 one of the best guys ever at taking care of the ball. Another guy, very calculated. He's not going to just cut it loose and let it rip all the time. He's very calculated, sharp, cerebral guy, you know, and he knows how to distribute the ball. He's the ultimate facilitating point guard. So he gleaned some of that from Alex Smith and now look. And it's so funny because you see guys like Steve Young,
Starting point is 00:33:58 you know, other West Coast guys, right, that have the ability to run. Patrick Mahomes only runs or extends plays if he has to. Like they taught him, they basically sat him down and were like, hey, we're going to teach you to beat these teams from the pocket, which is the hardest thing to do. Right. And when it's time,
Starting point is 00:34:18 because we're going to stay up all week and scheme these plays and we're going to dial them up for you. Okay? I'm going to teach you out of read them. I'm going to teach you your footwork, your eyes, the timing, all of it. All of it's going to go together and you're going to beat these teams from the pocket. But just so happens. if the defense covers it one time,
Starting point is 00:34:36 go be Patrick Mahomes and extend the play when you have to. But he's constantly going through his reach and then boom, he just creates a little space, moves a little bit to the right, shuffles to the right, back pedals a little bit, and he just, I mean, it's unbelievable. Now he's like on autopilot or something. It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:34:53 You can see he has shifted to a new level, which is I can do the underneath stuff and be patient. It's almost like everybody kind of, not like, rode them off, but it was just like, oh, that was kind of expected. And okay, let's, not that Justin Herbert and Josh Allen don't deserve a lot of headlines and all that, but it's just kind of like, okay, we moved on from Patrick. Like, and it's like, hold on now. Right, right. Oh, watch this.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Okay, so you're doing the Rams game this week. And it's interesting because there are problems in the NFL that are solvable. For instance, Cam Acres didn't get many carries. My theory is he missed a block in the first half badly. And it was like, I don't know if he was in the doghouse. Well, he got three carries as their number one back. Now, Alan Robinson, well, there was so much pressure. His routes, he couldn't get to his routes because Stafford was bailing.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Those are solvable. Left tackle, Andrew Whitworth, to me, is not a solvable issue. He's a Hall of Famer. And so as you looked at the Rams film this week, are there real concerns that, guys, that old line, it is not the same this year? I like No Boom. I mean, Whitworth is awesome. But No Boom's going to be just fine.
Starting point is 00:36:00 You think so. I think it'll be okay. I think it's important to remember. It's only week one. That was Vaughn Miller. And it's Vaughn Miller. And he's juiced up. It's his former team, week one, you know, Thursday night, like season opener.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Week one can be, you know, a dirty little liar like your ex-girlfriend or something. You know, like week one can take you a lot of places. We dated the same person while. So, so, I mean, look at the bills last year, got just beat up by the stuff. You know, so like it's, I wouldn't put too much into it. Okay. Yes. Could they have played better?
Starting point is 00:36:36 Yes. Does Stafford need more time? Yes. Can he take care of the ball a little better? Absolutely. And do they need to get the run game going, number one? And Alan Robinson's got to be, you know, can't be non-existent. We need that guy, right?
Starting point is 00:36:48 Because he's making up for Robert Woods. He's making up for O'Dell Beckham. You know, he's got to show up too. But I think they're going to be okay. I think the issue is, The Falcons really should have won their game. Oh, yeah. And the Falcons are coming to town.
Starting point is 00:37:05 I mean, you saw Arthur Smith's press conference. He was pissed. Right. Dude was just absolutely livid. Yeah. After the, I mean, they gave up a 16 point lead at the end of the game. And, you know, Mariotta has an excellent scramble, gets the, you know, down in Saints territory right near the goal line, fumbles the ball on a third and five after he gets the first down, right?
Starting point is 00:37:25 So the emphasis for him is like, hey, just take care of the ball, get your first down. Boom, slide, you know, stop taking so many hits. but that's going to be a tough one for the Rams. It's not, this ain't a cakewalk. Like the Falcons maybe last year, and I know they wouldn't like to hear that, but they weren't as tough. They controlled the first three quarters of the game.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Yeah, but they weren't as tough last year, I think. They fought, but not like this. This is, this is an energized group. This is a group that put it on tape that, hey, we can win. They screwed up a couple of plays. They gave up a go ball and two men, like, in the last couple minutes to James Swenson. Like that never happened.
Starting point is 00:38:01 It's the right call by Dean Peas. We just got to execute the play guys. Right. No brainer. You don't, the quarterbacks don't throw go balls and two men. Like it's just not, you're trying to work inside.
Starting point is 00:38:11 And he threw it into double coverage and the guy came down with it. So it's like, you know, they gave up a couple silly plays. Yeah. Balkans are going to be a tough out. That's, um,
Starting point is 00:38:20 they're not bad. All right. Stick around. I want to ask you about the New York Giants because football in New York, it was a really interesting game. J. Mack was on that. You predicted the giant. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Hi, this is Jay Glazer, and you may know me for the world of football or fighting or even shows like HBO's ballers. What you don't know is for my entire life, I have lived in something I refer to as the gray, depression, anxiety. So now I'm coming out with a new podcast, Unbreakable, a mental health podcast with Jay Glazer, where each week, while we talk about mental health, I hope to describe it. Give it words. Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:39:12 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app,
Starting point is 00:39:33 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett.
Starting point is 00:40:54 And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more. important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. Starting point is 00:41:51 with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Open your free, Our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. So great to have you back. So last week, Giants Titans, now you think to yourself, who wants to watch Giants Titans? Wild Finish, Brian Dayball, who basically, I think it was the right hire by the Giants. they have a quarterback, a lot of a stout his ability. But let's give him one more shot. And the best shot is the guy, because he's got an accuracy issue, Daibol fixed Josh Allen. So to me, it's a really good hire.
Starting point is 00:43:07 Let's bring in the fixer, the quarterback fixer. And, okay, so let's start with that. Does Daniel look a little more confident and a little more accurate to you? A lot more confident. I think he's gotten some plays that, most importantly, when I talked to Daniel last week and Daibble. We're just going to simplify it. When it's single high, it's single high. When it's too high, it's too high.
Starting point is 00:43:30 Like, let's just never miss those again. We're never going to miss run checks. I'm going to give you some breather plays during the game because you're going to have to drop back and throw it 30 to 35 times, but I'm going to give you five to 10 that are just, ah, just a little screen here and a, you know, just break away layups. And I want you to hit them every time.
Starting point is 00:43:51 The routine ground ball, I need it every single time. then when it's time to drop back and beat somebody and get to your third read and shuffle in the pocket and make a play, well, then we'll see what you got. But I think he just made the game, he helped him fall in love with the game a little bit, again, a little bit more, and reminded him that let's not overcomplicate it.
Starting point is 00:44:11 Let's keep it as simple as possible. Let's get to the truth of it if you screw it up, and he went over to him right away after he threw the pick in the end zone. He tried to throw the back shoulder to Saquan, and the DB was off. You can't throw a back shoulder when the DB's off and has vision on the quarterback, right? The idea of a back shoulder is you surprise the DB because he's not looking.
Starting point is 00:44:33 His back's, the back of his head is to you. So you literally throw it at the back of his head and your guy goes and gets it, right? Right. Well, the guy had vision on him and he kind of locked on and threw it. Well, day ball went over. You could see like, hey, we don't, we can't have that right there. One, the situation, we got a feel goal in the bag and we gave him the ball. two, that's not the look for a back shoulder.
Starting point is 00:44:55 Boom, okay, move on. Fourth and one, or whatever it was, fourth and inches, let's him keep it. On the fake to Sequin, everybody in the building thought it was going to Sequin, and boom, there goes Daniel Jones scampering. Just giving him that option to keep it there, you could tell his confidence was back
Starting point is 00:45:11 because he just blew it, right? He just almost gave away the game, and they started marching back, and he almost gave it away. Well, giving him that opportunity, and then the call to go for two was, I mean, that's a big pair there. That's a big pair. But you know, I always kind of feel like at home you play for overtime on the road. Sure, on the road, go for it.
Starting point is 00:45:34 Let's go for it. How much fun is that flight home? You're right. And the momentum started to shift. You could see it. Like the wind was out of Tennessee sales. The stadium was just like, you know, it was wild. They just mounted this comeback.
Starting point is 00:45:51 Saquan takes off and, whoa, you know, here it comes. Here it comes. I think Denver's going to bounce back and win this week. They fumbled twice at the one. They outgained Seattle. But I will say this. I defended Russell the other day. I said, Aaron Rogers had a new offensive coach two years ago in the playoffs,
Starting point is 00:46:08 and he deferred to him and they kicked a field goal. When they didn't go for it on the line. Yeah, yeah. Russell did it. He deferred to a rookie. Against Tampa now. Against Tampa. He deferred as a Hall of Famer.
Starting point is 00:46:19 And so Russell, who will be a Hall of Famer, defers to his young coach. And we kind of clobber Russell on it, but I like timeout. Aaron dropped in the first round. He's always had a chip on his shoulder to prove I'm the guy. Manning and Elway got to Denver. It was their team. I'm number one high school, number one college.
Starting point is 00:46:35 It's my team. Russell's life has been hand the ball off. You're too short, third round, transfer in college. Also in Seattle. Okay. Seattle. It's Pete's teams. Leeds and a boom.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Marshawn Lynch. So he goes to Denver, and it's easy to say. It's your team. That's not his life. Maybe not used to it. As you mentioned, I think that's fair. I just feel like there's got to be somebody, well, one, the timeout. I mean, the timeout thing is like,
Starting point is 00:47:03 insane. Coach, what are we doing? Like, you would at least look over like, what are we doing? And that one really shocked me because you got to save one for the kicking unit, right, for the team, so you don't have to do May Day, you know, everybody, run on the field last second for a field goal. Save one for the kicking you, but you had three timeouts in over a minute.
Starting point is 00:47:25 I mean, you're cruising. You got a lifetime. Yeah. So that was, I thought Mark. But somebody's got to be in the coach's ear too. You've got to have a clock guy. There's got to be somebody there's an analytics guy, when do we go for it? What are our chances? And somebody telling them, hey, what are our chances on fourth
Starting point is 00:47:41 and five? What are our chances to kick this whatever second longest field goal and, you know, NFL history? What are the chances? okay if one's 80 and one's 30 well let's try the 80 i don't know and maybe it was closer maybe they're exactly the same maybe it was a better idea i doubt it but it wasn't yeah you got to have like somebody telling you that because there's way too much stuff going on for the coach you know there's there's a million things same thing for the quarterback you got to constantly you're
Starting point is 00:48:09 constantly talking to him hey reminder here we're thinking about this is four down territory now it's third and ten but we don't need all 10 we're going for it on fourth down well that changes your whole approach to that third and ten. Because now you're not totally going. I can check it down. I can let a guy run for two yards, four yards, whatever. Let's just get to fourth down because this third down became second down, if that makes sense. But you've got to tell them that.
Starting point is 00:48:31 Those things got to be communicated. So I was just, it's a new operation and they're getting used to it. Well, and I do think, you know, you have 11 starting quarterbacks didn't take a snap in preseason. And what I saw. I saw that about, yeah. And three, one and eight lost. and a lot of the losers were like Aaron Rogers and Russell Wilson. But they start slow.
Starting point is 00:48:51 I mean, remember Aaron last year against the Saints and the Hurricane or whatever? They had to play in Jacksonville? Did you see how bad the O-line play was in week one? They got to keep them upright. They got to protect them. I get it. Because that's, you know, he's upright and he just dissects you. All right. Mark Sanchez, good stuff. He'll be doing this week.
Starting point is 00:49:08 The Falcons Ram Sunday Four Eastern on Fox. He says it's closer than you think.
