Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:05 A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes,
Starting point is 00:01:24 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:41 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians,
Starting point is 00:01:54 and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we are on a Thursday.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Things are happening. March Madness, later, later, later this afternoon. Heat's up again. It'll be a wild weekend. It's the herd wherever you may be, however you may be listening. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. Our show yesterday had massive breaking news. Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins leaving the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Alex Curry joining us. By the way, Drew Rosenhouse, one hour from now, Tyree Kill's agent will be joining us. how it all went down. It was crazy day. It was fun, though. This free agency stuff is fantastic. It's been wonderful.
Starting point is 00:03:08 Joy and I called it beautiful chaos on Friday. It's like, we need it, we love it, we crave it. It's perfect for us. It gives us something to talk about. It does. Let's start with this. A lot of doom and gloom in Kansas City. I am seeing this this morning.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I just read a story. Oh, Tyreek Hill is irreplaceable. People are listing all the wide receiver draft picks in the last three or four years for Kansas City that didn't work out. It's doom and gloom. Well, first of all, dynasties, if they ever happened, never lasts as long as we think. So let's just start there. Cowboy dynasty, Jimmy Johnson bailed.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Golden State Dynasty. Kevin Durant bailed. Laker Dynasty, Kobe and Jack split. Yankee Dynasty, guys got old, free agency. Seahawk Dynasty, there was none. They couldn't get to a second. Even the Heedles. And that was a dynasty, right?
Starting point is 00:04:02 Very, very close. Four years, two titles, and in the end, they looked old. That last series against San Antonio, they got outplayed. They looked old. They weren't old. Boss wasn't old. LeBron wasn't old. Spolster wasn't old.
Starting point is 00:04:18 They looked old. So this stuff never lasts as long as you think. And now this morning it's, well, Kansas City is like Seattle. They got to a Super Bowl. They narrowly won. They got to a Super Bowl. an ugly loss, they'll never get back. They kind of feel like the Seahawks, right?
Starting point is 00:04:35 Well, there's stuff around there that would make you think that. The division's now brutal. Andy Reid's almost 65 years old. I think they have the second best roster in their own division. Patrick Mahomes, in the last two years, has had prolonged six-game slumps, whereas mechanics go into the toilet. We knew that out of college.
Starting point is 00:04:56 So there's a lot of things here that make you think, Kansas City's in trouble. Pump the brakes. If you look at the history of dynasties in the NFL, you go back to Lombardi and Walsh and, you know, you're Chuck Null. Now, it's a different time now. Jimmy Johnson, though, ain't getting closer.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Bill Belichick, we have a new model for dynasties. Here's the three things you need. Number one, you have to have a really good quarterback who doesn't need to be the highest paid guy in the league. He's about winning. Joe Montana was about winning. Troy Aitman was about winning. Tom Brady's about winning.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Aaron wants to get paid. So Kansas City has that. Patrick Mulhomes has reworked his contract twice to be less of a cap hit. The second thing you have to have is you have to have a great coach. Lombardi, Belichick, Jimmy Johnson, Chuck Knoll, Don Shula. Every dynasty's had a great coach. You got that with Andy Ree. best play designer in the sport.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And the third thing you have to have is what Kansas City did yesterday. You got to fall in love with winning and not players. Kansas City, they wanted to win. They made him an offer. But Miami, looking for glamour, looking for tickets, looking for excitement. When's the last time the team that won the offseason won the Super Bowl? Let's start with never. It never happens.
Starting point is 00:06:29 right like so Kansas City has the three ingredients you need to be great a star quarterback that isn't driven by ego and the need to be the highest paid guy will constantly rework his contract to help the team the value you place is on winning
Starting point is 00:06:49 don't fall in love with players and a great head coach but Colin but what New England went 10 years early dynasty late dynasty 10 years they didn't win a Super Bowl. But those three fundamentals never changed with New England in that 10-year drought. Brady was never the highest paid.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Belichick was still great, and they let go of players all the time. So nothing's changed. Kansas City will not, probably not win the Super Bowl this year. But all the things, you go back to the early days of this league, you fall in love with players, the NFL now is giving you. college is giving the NFL 25 receivers a year. And what does, much like New England, what does this moment,
Starting point is 00:07:39 Kansas City have that New England always did? They have 12 draft picks. New England always hoarded draft picks. They have the most draft picks in the league, and they have this morning the most cap space. And the great coach and the quarterback that doesn't need for his vanity to be the highest paved. Guy in Green Bay spent all offseason trying to get that.
Starting point is 00:08:03 And he has no chance to win a Super Bowl because he's got no weapons. So this morning, doom and gloom, you have to have values in principles in this stuff. The history of sports always tell you there is a precedent and a road to the continuing success. And in the NFL, quarterback with not a huge ego, great coach. Don't fall in love with dudes. Fall in like with them. fall in love with winning. Kansas City is fine.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Now, we talk about Miami. And one of the things that, you know, this story broke yesterday as we were on the air. And so I talk about it. I talk about it. You go home, you digest, you consume and you have, you know, thoughts. It is possible, believe it or not, to have social media doesn't give you this option very often, but you can think two things at one time. And I've said, I do like what Miami has done this offseason as a franchise.
Starting point is 00:08:59 They have pivoted from a defensive leaning franchise to an offensive leaning franchise. When the Brian Flores got there, they went after free agents, Byron Jones the corner, Van Nuoy, the lineback. They couldn't get their offensive line right. They weren't very good at receiver. They weren't very good at quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick. It's almost like Flores. It's like, I'm going to get the defense right.
Starting point is 00:09:20 And they did that. And they're okay. And now, Miami, in the last four, or five months has said, now the world's changing. So now they're spending their money on offense, went and got two running backs, on Tyreek Hill. They draft Waddle. They went and got offensive pieces.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Look at all. Quarterback, receiver, receiver, receiver, running back, fullback, left tack. The organization, I can think two things at once, has pivoted to the right side of the ball. Brian Flores, intensity, defense. It's almost like he didn't care about quarterback. I mean, I was like Ryan Fitzpatrick. That's the answer.
Starting point is 00:10:01 19, 17 years. Well, so this I love. They have pivoted the right side of the ball. The bad news is they got a great sports car, but they don't have the right driver. You can give me a mazorati.
Starting point is 00:10:20 I don't know how to drive it. Fast. Couldn't make terms. Couldn't put me on a course. Two is weak. Small. Not a great arm. Folks, they got a really fast wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Congratulations. That's never won the Super Bowl. Even Randy Moss in New England didn't win a Super Bowl with them. The fastest wide receiver in the NFL, tell me the last time it won the Super Bowl. Don't get me wrong. I like the acquisition. I wouldn't have given up that many draft picks. I wouldn't have probably paid that much.
Starting point is 00:10:54 But I get it and I can think two things simultaneously. I like the pivot to all. offense, you've just got a really expensive chandelier in an empty mansion. The NFL's always been about four things. Owner, GM, coach, quarterback. If you're an A in all four, you can compete. Rams are an A in all four. They just won the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Dolphins owner, Dolphins GM, Dolphins coach. There's a rookie, no idea. Dolphins quarterback. There's no A's there. But you got a really nice chandelier in the mansion. You got a really nice sports car. Who's driving it? So this morning, it's, oh, my.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Wide receivers, folks, they're tools. Randy Moss, irrelevant in Oakland. Goes to New England. Greatest season ever with Tom. OBJ, Baker-Mayfield to Stafford. Look different, didn't it? They're just tools. You've got to have somebody to drive them.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Guess what? My kitchen has all sorts of things to make a souffle. My wife can, I can't. Right? We've got the tools. I just don't know how to make it. She's more of a chef. She can. That's all wide receivers are.
Starting point is 00:12:04 You don't have the protection. You don't have the quarterback. They got a rookie head coach. They got a quarterback probably not there in a year. They got a suboptimal owner. GM's fine, not spectacular. They're not terrible. But you're going to see what you're going to see very clearly with Tyreek Hill because
Starting point is 00:12:20 we have data for the last three years, Mahomes, in Tyreek Hill, what you're going to see in a very good defensive division with Bell Jack, Robert Solich, got all defensive coaches now, right? Better than average with Tuah, a limited quarterback, you're going to see really quickly, oh, they're not getting the most at a Tyreek Hill because you're going to compare it to the Mahomes Tyreek Hill relationship. That's the comp. And so he's going to move to Miami, face Belichick twice a year with Tua and face, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:49 that Buffalo build team. They can't, they certainly haven't been able to beat Buffalo in recent years. And the comp is going to be, we're not getting enough out of him. So they're going to move off Tua. You know that. This is basically a move in a year to move off Tua. Because you're going to watch Tyree Kill. The owner's going to go, look what I'm spending.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Look what I have. Why aren't we winning more? Because you're not winning the division. So, yes, you can think two things. Love the pivot to the right side of the ball. You still don't have the culture and the pieces in place to get the most out of it. Kansas City will be better this year than Miami. The difference is,
Starting point is 00:13:26 Kansas City standards are the Super Bowl, and they could be out of that. Miami standards just get to the playoffs. I'm not sure they will. You can think two things at once. You really can. Dolphin fan today thinks the world's changed. No, you're just faster at wide receiver. That's never won Super Bowls.
Starting point is 00:13:47 All right, good to have you in. A lot of stuff here. Drew Rosenhouse in about 45 minutes from now. What a messy offseason for the count. Cowboys. The Miami Heat last night imploding on the bench. That was feisty. A lot of stuff coming up.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:15:49 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do you? I do a little kill. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:16:11 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS. on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:16:34 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose.
Starting point is 00:17:38 On my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Now entering the new Bull Zone. Sponsored by Credible, Great Rates, none of the Bull. Cowboys are hiring Brian Schottnheimer, recently fired by Jacksonville, our show a couple of weeks ago. These are going to be another one of these kind of game day, game planning coaches on the staff.
Starting point is 00:18:02 It's been a really bad offseason for the Cowboys. Now, you don't have to win free agency, but a lot of good teams are getting better. And you've got to have a plan. If you want to tank, tank, but it's a plan. If you want to get better, get better, it's a plan. Dallas looks unprepared. Like they showed up to class. There was a midterm and they didn't study for it.
Starting point is 00:18:21 So Kansas City just got five picks for their star receiver. A first, a second, two-fourth, and a sixth. Dallas got one fifth round pick for Amari Cooper. Now, I understand that timing is crucial in life. But the Cowboys sold their Apple stock, and a week later, they came out with the iPhone. Like, they missed. If they sold Amari Cooper today, if they traded it, they'd get a lot better picks. Some of its timing.
Starting point is 00:18:49 But I don't see a game plan by Dallas. And there's like three groups to me in this offseason. The first group is we know they're kind of rebuilding. Seattle, Atlanta, Houston. They're rebuilding. They're moving off players and getting a lot of picks. Seattle has been lacking quality draft picks for years. Unlike the Rams who have draft picks and star players, they have a few star players.
Starting point is 00:19:13 They've moved off Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson to get picks. They're, especially with Russell, these are rebuilding teams. They're not winning the Super Bowl. They know it. I'm okay with that. It's a plan. Then there are to the teams that are really, really good rosters, and they just made them better going and attracting stars.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Cincinnati, massive upgrade to the offensive line. Buffalo goes and gets Vaughn Miller, Jameson Crutter. Cleveland, a really good roster gets a star quarterback. You know, again, Cincinnati, big upgrades on the offensive line, the primary weakness. Denver, great roster. Randy Gregory, DJ Jones, Russell Wilson. Chargers, Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Raiders have knocked it out of the park. They lost a corner, but they've gone heavy offense and crushed it plus Chandler Jones. So they want to win now. They got good rosters. These are, you know, all these teams last year, except Denver and the Chargers, you know, were playoff teams and the Chargers and the Chargers could have been if they won their last game. So these are good teams. They want to win now.
Starting point is 00:20:17 We added star players. oh, Browns didn't. Let's go to the third group. The third group is, holy crap, this isn't going as we planned. Green Bay and Dallas. The difference is Green Bay has got a lot of picks in Aaron Rogers. And they're in on D.K. Metcalf this morning. I don't think they'll get him.
Starting point is 00:20:36 I think Kansas City will if they want him because they got, you know, let's be honest. They're a go-for-it franchise. Packers don't even have an owner. So Kansas City this morning can go out. They can go to the Hunt family and say, let's get it done, whatever it takes. Green Bay will have to have a board meeting and raise capital by selling stock. So my guess is Kansas City will get D.K. Metcalf.
Starting point is 00:20:57 But Green Bay is in the running, according to sources. They've got a lot of picks and they got Aaron Rogers. Dallas is worse today at weapons, those matter. O-line, that matters. And pass rush. Sort of important. This has been a bad, bad offseason for the Cowboys. And they don't look terribly prepared.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Alex with the news Turn on the news This is the herd line news Well the Browns had reportedly been hoping to get a first round draft pick in a trade for Baker Mayfield They also want to trade him as soon as possible But the market for him has dried up significantly So they are lowering they're asking price According to Mary Kay Cabot, the team is no longer seeking a first round pick in a deal
Starting point is 00:21:42 The team also does not plan on paying any part of Baker's salary to facilitate a trade. This escalated very quickly and is a prime example to any other player, how not to handle a situation. Yeah, I mean, toxicity is bad. I mean, if you look at all the new quarterbacks on teams, they all have issues. Trubisky's not a big armed talent.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Deshaun's got 22 civil cases. Wentz was unvacked and wildly inconsistent. Matt Ryan is seen as sort of a pocket-only stoic guy that's expensive and not terribly. You know, he's older. Marcus Marriota can't stay healthy. They all got jobs. All of them. So it's not that Baker's not one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the planet.
Starting point is 00:22:24 He is. That's not that. He was a first round pick. He was a Heisman winner. He won a playoff game in Cleveland. If I would have said to you four or five years ago when they drafted Baker, four years ago, we're going to draft Baker, he's going to win a playoff game in Cleveland. Do you think they would be bailing on him a year early?
Starting point is 00:22:45 just because of an injury latency? Absolutely not. So look at what has happened to the market of quarterbacks. They've all got baggage. One's got civil cases. One's not an armed talent. One can't stay healthy. One is old.
Starting point is 00:22:58 One's wildly inconsistent. They all got jobs. And Jimmy Garoppolo, who reportedly can't throw a football for the next three and a half months, the Niners have been offered a second round pick. The only guy that can, and he's absolutely a franchise quarterback. Oh, yeah. I will defend Baker forever on that. He is one of the 32 best quarterbacks in America today.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Why not? Not likable, toxic. He either gets bad advice from his parents or his agent. Yeah. Or he gets good advice and he doesn't listen. There's no reason that nobody in a quarterback starved sport is an offering. And it's a really big deal that he got Cleveland, the first quarterback in 19 years, to a playoff game. That is a really big deal. No one's talking about that. No one's even focusing on
Starting point is 00:23:49 that because of how he handled this situation. Yeah, it's just, it's a couple days ago, there was a situation where Carolina, a story leak, they weren't interested. And somebody's from Baker's camp fired back and said, we're not interested either. Who gave him that advice? Not good. Like, just stop. Stop trying to win every Twitter argument. You don't need the last word. Just, just wait and be patient. Ball in the sword. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Well, let's move to the Seahawks because they're going to look much different next season with two of their franchise players, Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner off the team. There are also reports that the Chiefs and Packers have inquired about a trade for D.K. Metcalfe. Now, one player that is definitely sticking around is safety, Quadre Diggs, and he is confident that Seattle is not looking at a rebuild. Take a listen. It's always tough to see a guy like Russ go. You know, I mean, it's the business of the NFL and, you know, you see Russ and Bobby go. And it's just, you know, it's just. like she's like, you know, kind of what mode are we, you know, being able to talk to Pete,
Starting point is 00:24:49 been able to understand that, you know, we're not in a rebuild mode. We're trying to get this thing back going and, you know, build a team, you know, build a team differently a little bit. And, you know, like I said, such to see those guys go two big leaders, two big guys that's played a critical part of my career. Well, they are completely in rebuild mold. Outside of safety, where they have Diggs and Jamal Adams, they don't have an elite unit. on the team.
Starting point is 00:25:16 I want to know what Pete Carroll said to him to convince him that they're not in rebuild mode. You just lost two of your great players and possibly another one. How are you not in rebuild? You don't have an option right now. Complete rebuild mode. So they're even in a bad division.
Starting point is 00:25:31 They would be in rebuild mode. They do not have, D.K. Metcalfe is there one remaining highly coveted player on the market. Now Diggs and Jamal Adams are good players. So is Dwayne Brayne. But on the marketplace, if you put every Seahawk player on the market, one D.K. Metcalf would get multiple suitors at a big price. That is it.
Starting point is 00:25:57 That is the only player they had. Now, think about that. If let's take a random team, let's take the Chargers, Derwin James on the market, Justin Herbert on the market, Mike Williams was on the market, Roshan Slater, Corey Lindsley, Khalil Mack, Bosa. they have seven guys that went to the market. Yeah. There'd be a bidding frenzy. Seattle has won. Because Jamal Adams would not, he's too expensive, would not create a bidding frenzy.
Starting point is 00:26:25 Diggs a little and D.K. Metcalf. That is it. So that is a complete rebuilding roster. All I got from that is that Pete Carroll is a heck of a salesman if he convinced him that they're not in a rebuild mode right now. All right. Well, New York City Mayor announced today that the city is lifting the vaccine mandate for professional athletes. The change is effective immediately and will allow Kyrie Irving to start playing in Nets home games. He has missed all 35 home games so far this season due to the mandate, but now can make his home debut on Sunday when the Nets host the Hornets.
Starting point is 00:26:57 And this is huge, considering he's only played 20 of 73 games this season. Yeah, no, it's actually absolutely huge. This is huge. I watched them play Memphis last night. I watched this game. Brooklyn is really bad defensively, and that's not going to change with Kyrie Irving. Memphis didn't have John Morant and still scored at will. But I will say this.
Starting point is 00:27:16 The one thing Brooklyn now has, and Miami, who everybody loves doesn't, they've got two of the five, six best closers in the world. So the playoffs are about people who can close a quarter out and close a game out. So Kyrie and Kevin Durant are going to be a handful now. Simmons, nobody cares. Andre Drummond, it doesn't matter. So I do believe in top to bottom, I think a little bit, a little bit weaker conference. I'm not sure that's true.
Starting point is 00:27:48 If you have the two best closers in your conference and there's an argument to be made, these two are. Oh, yeah. You're going to be a handful. This is not small news. This is a big deal. It's a big deal. Huge.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Nine games left, six of them at home. So that means he just gets to be at all of them now. Yeah. So that's big. Alex with the news well that's the news and thanks for stopping by the herd lie news
Starting point is 00:28:16 the um you know I want to talk about this because I did watch this last night I watched so there was a piece of video last night where two of my favorite people in the world udonis haslam long time member of the heat and Eric Spolstra world class coach there was a moment last night in Miami where
Starting point is 00:28:39 Jimmy Butler and Spolstra had to be restrained. Jimmy Butler's a live wire. He's highly emotional. I've been saying this about Miami all year long, is that they are not built to be a great playoff team. And it's interesting when this happened last night. But their two best players are Jimmy Butler and Bam out of bayou. They're great energy guys and great athletes.
Starting point is 00:29:05 They're not great closers. they're just that they're not great closers and you know this highlights what jimmy butler is he's a live wire and he's great he'll give you great effort on a tuesday night in memphis but i don't buy this team at all as a championship team i don't think they're as good as boston who's got a closer i don't think they're as good as brooklyn in the playoffs who's got two closers they're not as good as philly with two closers they're not as good as Milwaukee that's got two closers. Some nights drew Holiday a third.
Starting point is 00:29:38 But Milwaukee for years and years, everybody thought they'd win a title. And Milwaukee finally won a title when two things happened. Janice hit 15 to 17 free throws in the finals, close the game out, and Middleton had a 40-point game in the finals. Middleton, by the way, also beat Miami last year in overtime with a big shot. So Chris Middleton, who was always hit and miss in big moments, was much better in the postseason last. year. He was a closer multiple times. Jimmy Butler's not. Jimmy Butler in February and March shot 10% on three-pointers. He's one of the worst fourth quarter shooters in the league. He's an athlete. He's a live wire. He's a passion player. He's not a closer. That's the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Bam on a Bayou doesn't create his own shot. He's a great athlete, great energy, great passion. It's not a closer. And so, yeah, fourth quarter this year, Jimmy Butler's shoots under 40%. So simultaneously, Brooklyn now gets one of the world's best closers all year. And Miami illustrates last night what they are. Highly emotional. It's great in the regular season. You've got to have closers.
Starting point is 00:30:50 If you look right now, Memphis has a closer. Golden State's got a couple. Phoenix has a couple. Philly, Brooklyn, Celtics, Milwaukee all have closers. Yonis right now, second most fourth quarter points in the league. And he's doing that like 56%. Like he's an incredibly efficient closer.
Starting point is 00:31:10 So, you know, as I watch this, and I've seen Miami play, I work out about 4.35 o'clock. So Miami's on. Their games, I get a lot of first halves for Miami's. And I get a lot of highlights in Miami. My takeaway is always. Bam and Butler are really built for the emotion and the
Starting point is 00:31:29 intensity of Riley and Spolstra. I don't see him closing out games. I don't. I think what the Eastern Conference has done over the last couple of years, Milwaukee's two best players have become better closers. Kyrie's now available, Hardens now with another great closer. I don't think Miami's built for this stuff. Here's Eric Spoltra after the game. That's pretty clear.
Starting point is 00:31:53 We have a very competitive, gnarly group, and we're getting our asses kicked. And it's two straight games. We were not playing to the level that we wanted to play. You can use moments during a season to catapult you. You can galvanize together, you know, over frustration and disappointment, but we have needed a kick in the butt. It is interesting to me that sports keeps telling us what matters. Right?
Starting point is 00:32:25 Like with Kansas City losing Tyree Kill, everybody freaks out. We have 50, 60 years of the way to build a dime. dynasty in this league. Great coach, a quarterback that's great that's not the highest paid quarterback, and you can't fall in love with players. That's the recipe. Don't freak out. Kansas City is going to be fine. They got 12 draft picks. Two first, two second. They'll find over receiver. It's another great receiver draft. What doesn't win is, hey, they got the fastest receiver. And they have a great quarterback? No. Coach, no. GM, no. Owner, not really. And in the NBA, people fall in love with all this regular season stuff. How many times have we said it?
Starting point is 00:33:02 The NBA is two seasons. It's the regular season, and then the refs swallow the whistle, and you go to the playoffs. And if you do not have a closer, you have no chance at the finals. You have almost no chance to win the championship unless you have two closers, which is why I don't buy Boston. They have one. Jalen Brown's good. I don't consider an elite closer.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Jason Tatum is. So between Harden going to Philadelphia, giving them to, Kyrie is now available. They have two. Middleton is elevated. So is Janice. They have two. Forget the title.
Starting point is 00:33:40 Miami's not getting out of the east. They're just, and he said it. We got a gnarly bunch of guys who play really hard. That's what Miami is. That doesn't win the championship. The Lakers were that too, but Kobe and Shaq were the two best closers at the time in the game.
Starting point is 00:33:55 All right. We're going to go. Channing Crowder has got a talk show in Miami. They're going crazy today, right? Like Miami is the same. center of the sports universe. Cats and dogs living together with their NBA franchise, Tyree Killed with the Dolphins will address both. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.

Starting point is 00:34:53 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:35:18 A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:36:23 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you're going to be. You can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:37:05 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and confidence. conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:37:33 I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions. bro absolutely and that that's two different levels of trust i want you to just really be a good person join me keer gains is we have real conversations about healing growth fatherhood pressure and purpose
Starting point is 00:38:12 on my new podcast learn the hard way open your free iHeart radio app search learn the hard way and listen now all right good to have you back bobby wagner could sign with the rams oh boy I know. The rich get richer. Yeah, I mean, but you know, I will say this. The Rams lost Darius Williams and Vaughn Miller. So it's their off season has been we won a championship. We're not going to fall in love with guys.
Starting point is 00:38:43 Darius Williams. You can't pay Jalen Ramsey and Darius Williams. So the Rams are a great example of what the chiefs are doing now. We really like this player. We'll make them an offer, but we can't have two of the top five highest paid corners. So the Rams are using the Patriots, you know, kind of belief is we got a good quarterback, we have a great coach, we can't fall in love with players. So Kansas City, you know, once you start paying quarterback's $45 million a year, you have to make choices. This stuff is hard.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Channing Crowder is a former dolphin for six years. Great talk show host in Miami. Good to see him again. There you go. All right. So the Tyreek Hill thing is exciting. Miami, the best Miami teams have always been a little glamorous, right? the best heat teams, the best dolphin teams.
Starting point is 00:39:29 But when I look at the construct of this team, couldn't I argue, they're still going to be primarily a running team? The free eight, I mean, they went and signed two backs, Channing. I don't see, I don't see them a high-flying offense. I just, I think they'll use Tyreek Hill in a lot of ways, including jet sweeps and all that stuff. What is your belief what the offense will look like now? It's going to be run heavy.
Starting point is 00:39:53 And we're waiting for that splash. I wanted the splash and the Tyreek Hill. That's the splash everybody down in Miami was waiting for. But look at McDaniel. Look what they did out in Kansas. Out in, yeah. San Francisco, yeah, when he was out there. They're going to be run heavy.
Starting point is 00:40:07 They signed a fullback. Who signs fullbacks nowadays? It's 2022. They're going to be run heavy, but that sets up to play action. That brings the eighth in the box. That gets one-on-ones to Waddle, Gaseki, and now Tyreek Hill, the most explosive, maybe not the best receiver in the league, but the most explosive player in the world on a football.
Starting point is 00:40:25 football field. So it's going to be a heavy play action thing. Right back to where Tua was in college now. Think about how Alabama ran their offense. So run first play action. That's what they're going to be. Signing Armstead, bringing in Connor Williams. They solidified that line a little bit. I want another fat boy now, Colin. I need some more fat people up front. But this is going to be a run first offense. And Tyreek Hill gets one-on-ones and nobody can cover the cheetah in one-on-one coverage. Were you surprised that they were this aggressive, five-drekeye. draft picks a lot of money. Were you a little surprised by it? When you, when you woke up, did you think this, your first reaction was, oh, I saw it coming or wow? No, it was wow. Because it was
Starting point is 00:41:06 why that Tyreek wanted all that money. And Tyreek said he wanted that bread too. But the dolphins, to speak about money, the dolphins have money. We knew they had the most salary cap money going into this offseason. Colin, you don't shop it at the dollar store. You got money. You spend money. So there's no reason for us to go to Piccadilly and have, you know, and ate at a buffet. We got a little money, Colin the Dolphins had money. Let's spend that money. Let's go out there and get guys that excite your fan base, excite your new coach, excite your owner who's won to win.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Now, Stephen Ross is, he's tired of losing stuff. We heard some stories with him and Flores now. He's tired of losing. So, yes, you have money, spend money. You can't hide money. We say the league all the time. A guy gets a new contract. Something's going to change.
Starting point is 00:41:54 You have this much money. money, something has to change. All right. Yeah, I can be a little frugal. All right, Tua's development. It's not fair to compare Tarek with Tua and Tariq with Mahomes. He's not going to drive the ball down the field. I mean, can he help Tua's development?
Starting point is 00:42:12 How does that thing going to work? Oh, he will, he will for sure. On the field, now we know, like I'm saying, if he's a man coverage, throwing the ball, he's going to run those deep crossers, him and Wiler are going to be on the same side, safeties are going to have to be like if you're if you're if you're on that track meet against the dolphins this year the safety has to back up some you're going to open up space underneath but just the knowledge of him just working with my homes and if i was tyriek killed i would make too a tired of hearing the name mahomes hey man this is how pat did it hey this is how pat
Starting point is 00:42:42 work when i hit that second window the linebackers this is how this is how pat did it i would make too tired of hearing patrick's name when we're sitting out having lunch because tyreeks seen success. Tyreeks are six-time Pro Bowl in six years now. That's junior say-out level of football now. So, if you know where success comes from, get your young quarterback to be on the same page with you. But yes,
Starting point is 00:43:05 Tyreech is going to be open. Tua, get him the ball. We've talked about it before. I know you're not a huge fan of Tua, Colin. He's accurate. He threw the ball deep in college. I don't know why he forgot to throw the ball deep. He didn't have no time last year. And now with Tyreek there, I think they can create those
Starting point is 00:43:21 one-on-ones that everybody won. and he can help too out a lot on the field, but also I think mentally this is where Tyree can really step up, be mature, be the older guy, and sit him down and explain how things were done when it very successful Kansas City Chiefs offense. Let's bring a little of that over here to Miami. Yeah, now expectations, as you know, expectations go up when you spend a lot of money. Is it fair to say with Tyreek Hill and Waddle, it is a make or break season for Tua now? 100%. 100%. They have two first rounders in 2023, and they have a hell of a quarterback class coming out 22 and 3. Young's going to be in there from Alabama. They got some players, unlike this year,
Starting point is 00:44:02 you know, we'll see what happens with these quarterbacks. This is two as year. You have a new coach. We protected you with Armstead. We got in Connor Williams. I think they're going to sign another lineman. We got you weapons. You have, you know, arguably if you want to go Waddle, Waddle Hill, you're going to have two of the best receivers by far the fastest receiving core in the league. go make this happen this year. We've given you time. It's your team. You know, we brought in Teddy in cases, you know, it doesn't work out with you.
Starting point is 00:44:27 But no, Colin, I think if we, if our offense isn't in the high 20s, low 30s points per game and not in the teams like 1904 football like we were last year, I think this would be towards last year with the Miami Dolphins and they'll utilize those two picks next year to bring in the franchise, the next potentially franchise quarterback. You know, it's interesting. Channing Crowder, former Dolphin linebacker, media. sensation, obviously in Miami. He's got a lot to say. The one thing I like about this, beyond Tyreek, is that sometimes in sports, we saw it in the NBA. About seven years ago, it's like it became
Starting point is 00:45:03 a three ball league. You couldn't have two guys on the floor that couldn't shoot a three. You just couldn't. You could not. It's like, okay, the league became a math equation. So what is happening in the league is pretty obvious. And this is what I like with Miami. And I loved Brian Flores. The rules are now in the acceleration of the quality of quarterbacks at a young age and quality of receivers. The dolphins have really this offseason pivoted the entire franchise to an offensive franchise. Fullbacks, receivers, backs, Gaseki extension. That part I like. Now, I don't know if Mike McDaniel, I don't know what he is.
Starting point is 00:45:41 I mean, he looks like people that I used to go to college with that were way smarter than me. That's what he looks like. I mean, you see him at a podium. He's going a thousand miles an hour. What do we know about Mike McDaniels? Can he make this, you know, cinch this thing up? What do we know about him? We know he's funny in the media.
Starting point is 00:45:59 We know he does great press conferences. We know he's emotional and excited and young. You know, he'll relate with the players. Like, the players are going to love him. But I'm with you. Like Kyle Shanahan called the offense. I know he constructed it Monday through Saturday, but Kyle called it when he was in,
Starting point is 00:46:16 out there in San Francisco. So we don't know much about him. I love that he, like you said, he brought in his entire new offense. He resigned Durham Smyth. He resigned Gaseki, brought in Tyreek. I think they might get rid of some guys, actually. Rahim Mozart brought him in, comfortable with him. Chase Edmins, if somebody gets divorced, I don't want to move into your house that you lived in with your ex-husband. I want a new house. Let's, let's go get us a new house somewhere. And that's what Mike McDaniel did. He has reconstruct this entire offense. It's on his shoulders. I know when he got the job, it was make to a good, make this offense a competitive office like you're talking about. We're shooting threes now. We're not shooting twos anymore.
Starting point is 00:46:57 Don't give me the Tony's Toronto field goals every time. We're shooting threes now, baby. So I love that McDaniels constructed his offense the way he wanted it. But yes, the comparison to NBA is exactly what it is. I'm an old school defensive guy. Two thousand raiders. as 2002 Buccaneers, Colin, I love those teams. You cannot do that this day and age. If you're not scoring 28 a game, you're not going to have a chance to win. And if McDaniels can do that to answer your question, that's what he has to prove to all of us, me, you, and everybody in the world that he can call, construct, and execute
Starting point is 00:47:32 a successful offense in this league. And they trusted him with it. Stephen Ross, Chris Greer trusted him. So let's see what he does when Sunday comes around. Channing Crowder, Mark Hockman, great radio show in Miami. You're a handful, man. I love, love your energy. And I thought you brought up the really smart point here.
Starting point is 00:47:49 It's very funny. They went out and got a fullback. So Tyreek Hill, it's wonderful, but what you said is true. They're going to look like San Francisco. They're going to want to pound the football. They went out. Mostert is a bully. They bullied up this offense.
Starting point is 00:48:05 And that's being understated because we're all paying attention to Tyreek Hill. But Channing, I love having you on. It's great seeing you. Continue to kick butt, my man. Anytime, man. Thanks for having me. Enjoy now. I know you big time now.
Starting point is 00:48:18 You know, holl out of play every night again. Joy is off today. It's Alex Curry, but we get exactly what you're saying, Shannon. Miami's the center of the universe today for sports. It's a lot of fun. That's a really good point. We're all panettante. You're bringing the San Francisco offense over that got to a Super Bowl with Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Fullbacks, running back, and. they had a Debo Samuel that they could put in the backfield. Watch Tyreek Hill. Jet sweeps backfield. It's going to look a lot like San Francisco. Not great at quarterback. Offensive leaning, highly physical. By the way, they re-signed Gaseki.
Starting point is 00:48:53 Great, tough, physical tight end. They upgrade the O line. They get a fullback. They go get Chase Edmonds. They go get Mostard. So that point is really true. We're all going to fall in love with all the stuff on the periphery. Yeah, they're fast.
Starting point is 00:49:06 This is going to be a much more physical. run dominant offense. All right, good stuff today, flying through it. Drew Rosenhouse, the agent for Tyreek Hill, is going to stop by. And Bobby Wagner, it must drive people crazy who hate L.A. The Rams are like- I love it so much. We'll take another great player.
Starting point is 00:49:31 It should be noted, though, you lost Von Miller and Darius Williams, and Andrew Whitworth retired. So there's some money here to be spent. I still don't think OBJ stays in L.A. I still don't. Hour two, Drew Rosenouse around the corner. It's the hurt. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
