Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:06 A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes,
Starting point is 00:01:24 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:41 For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians,
Starting point is 00:01:54 and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. Fox Sports Radio. This is The Herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be making as part of your day.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlieb in for Colin Cowherd. Man, we got a great show for you. A tremendous, tremendous show for you. And I'm fired up because we are one sleep away. one, one sleep away from college football officially kicking off. I know it was week zero and Nebraska, 11 point lead, onside kick, whatever. But college football begins a new tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:03:20 We also, tonight could have the last time we get a chance to see Serena Williams play professional tennis at the U.S. Open. That's a big thing. And then right across the street, City Field, you have Jacob de Grom with the Mets as the Dodgers. Andrew Haney took down the Mets last night at City Field. So we actually, oh yeah, and in Anaheim, Aaron Judge, Judge hit his 51st home run last night. Fifty-first home run last night. So we do have some baseball on the docket. College football is close.
Starting point is 00:03:54 We got some NBA stuff to talk about, including, including, I always love when somebody says something less intelligent. than they are as a person. You know, they always, they kind of want to reset the facts, and that's happened with the Lakers. We'll get to that. But let's start with the most popular team in the NFL is the Dallas Cowboys.
Starting point is 00:04:25 They're the most valuable. They're the most profitable. And they're, I don't know, I think they're a perfect embodiment of their moniker of America's team, right? because there are so many different great elements to the Cowboys, the star, the uniform, the field, the setting, even the stadium, which it doesn't feel dated, but it does feel like a bit of a bit of a billion dollar relic
Starting point is 00:04:59 in comparison to SOFI and to the one in Minnesota, which is incredible in Atlanta. But it was the first of the new spend, whatever and just build a spaceship and maybe watching it on TV, even in the stadium is better than watching it on the field. So there are so many parts to it which are good and many parts to it which are overhyped and overstated. And it's like a national holiday, kind of like when Notre Dame football loses their
Starting point is 00:05:27 first game, although if we're honest, Notre Dame football has been far more consistently competitive, maybe not for a championship, but consistently competitive in comparison of the Cowboys over the last decade. But I look at it and the brand loyalty to the Cowboys is the type of brand loyalty that does exist in our regular lives. Like we are locked into it. I'll get to that in a second. This story out of Dallas that the Cowboys believe Tyron Smith will be able to return
Starting point is 00:06:00 from an evulsion fracture of his knee late in the season, but they need somebody to fill a spot at left tackle for the time being. First round pick, Tyler Smith is an obvious choice. Of course, he played there for Tulsa in college. And he's the, really the best in-house option. And during an appearance on a Dallas radio show, Jerry Jones said it's safe to say that Smith is that option. The team is confident in his ability to handle the job. Yikes. not that Tyler Smith won't eventually be what they hope he's going to have to be, but it's an eventually he was more a developmental pick. It's really interesting, though, how loyal cowboy fans are to the Cowboys.
Starting point is 00:06:48 This is the year. We haven't reached the next year is our year the way that Cubs fans used to before they ultimately won a World Series. But I want you to think about it for a second. The Cowboys have had good years. What, three playoff wins, though, since the Super Bowls? But winning in the playoffs can be hard, can be tricky. I do think Des caught the ball.
Starting point is 00:07:16 I think everybody believes he caught the ball. We just don't know if the rule determined that he caught the ball. But this is really an amazing stat. 1996. How many years ago was that? guys. So 1996. So we're talking we're talking here. 25 years ago roughly, a little bit more than 25 years ago. Almost
Starting point is 00:07:44 you know, you're creeping up on 30 years ago. That was the last time they had consecutive 10 win seasons. Think about that. We took it for granted in New England that the Patriots are going to win 10 games a year. Didn't we? Go back and look. I think Brady only won less than 10 one time. And you can sit here and tell me, well, you know, the division, the AFC East stinks. The NFC East would like a word with you. I mean, look, it's an incredibly over-discussed division because the Giants are in New York, the Eagles are in Philly, and the commanders are in D.C., right?
Starting point is 00:08:31 Huge markets. Then you had the biggest follow. in the NFL in the Dallas Cowboys. And like, let's be honest, the commanders, when they were the football team or the Redskins, like they had some years where RG3's rookie year before his injury, there was a Kirk Cousins year in there. They've had a year here, year there. But generally, they've been a bit of a dumpster fire
Starting point is 00:08:54 the last, what, 15 years? The Eagles were a picture of consistency and consistent success back when they had Andy Reyes. They, of course, went to and won a Super Bowl. That was, geez, that was like five years ago. But they've been, they've struggled to maintain consistency, although last year, of course, they won the division. And then the Giants, you go back when Eli was quarterback,
Starting point is 00:09:20 and they struggled with them some consistency as well, but generally very competitive, although it's been five years really since they've done anything. You remember when they drafted Saquan Barkley? I distinctly remember in that draft so many people, myself included thought you should take quarterback there and one of the reasons
Starting point is 00:09:40 you thought you'd take quarterback is how many times the Giants actually going to draft in the top 10, top five? Funny part is they've kind of lived in that top 10, top five since then. But the Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable team, the most disgust team.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Heck, we don't get pressure from Fox. Other people don't get pressure from there to talk about it. just in sports radio and sports tells me you talk about what people want to talk about. And people love talking about the cowboys. They love cheering for the cowboys. Heck, even in L.A., I would say Raiders and Cowboys are the two most popular teams. And the Cowboys have had their training camp here for years.
Starting point is 00:10:23 But they didn't play here. Like the Raiders legit played here. And I guess part of it is, you know, whatever is great in our childhood. or whatever you remember in our childhood, that will become adults we're still fans of. You know, I love the fact that the Simpsons are still on TV. I still watch them. You know, whatever was great in the 90s,
Starting point is 00:10:43 when you hear it on the radio, you're like, ooh, God, that brings me back. And watching the Dallas Cowboys, I would think brings many of you back to, man, I love those teams. They were loaded, they partied, they had a good time, they had a great quarterback, you know. I mean, look, our, even our TV set is populated by,
Starting point is 00:11:01 Troy and Mike Orvin. Hell, Emmett Smith was awful on TV. How many opportunities did he get? Because he's Emmett Smith, right? Moose. I mean, all these guys, part of it. But isn't it amazing the brand loyalty we have to the Cowboys?
Starting point is 00:11:18 Maybe as the anti-Cowboy fans, you like to see him lose, but you like to see a team lose because you think they're overhyped and you hear, and I think it's part of it is the, you are reacting to the brand loyalty. The Dallas Cowboys have had an awful offseason. Now, look, they got Michael Parsons,
Starting point is 00:11:36 who he might be the best player in football. He's that good. And the defense is pretty tough. Now, we have to couch it by saying, do you know the quarterbacks they beat last year? They lost in the wild card, going back to last year. But the quarterbacks they took down
Starting point is 00:11:57 in the process of getting there was remarkable. Nobody good. and you measure yourself out with the best teams in football. That's what you do. When you play the best, that's how we judge you. You know, how they do against Tampa, how they do against Kansas City, how they do against the Raiders. You know, I mean, look, you know, I mean, you go back through it
Starting point is 00:12:27 and they beat up on outside of the Chargers win. They beat up on teams with lower level quarterbacks. average football teams. So they have to replace most of their offensive line. Their running back position, I mean, I think we all know that Zeke is fine, but it doesn't feel like that contract's a joke and how bad it is, considering his level of or lack there of production. And Tony Pollard, while a great change of pace,
Starting point is 00:13:01 and maybe he should be their starting running back, they're going to use them in the slot because they just want to get them on the field more, but they got Zeke with the contract and they need a slot-wide receiver. C.D. Lambs is a stud and a star, and they've done a great job of drafting early in the draft, but who else is there for Dak to throw to and who's there to protect Dak? Don't worry, Mike McCarthy, his end-of-game decision-making will pull you through. Isn't it amazing our brand loyalty to something or someone that was great when we were kids? clearly not consistently great now.
Starting point is 00:13:46 If you went to a restaurant and every other meal there was really, really good. You know, one time you go there and it's great. One time you go there, you're like, eh, not very good at all. Hair in my food, service was bad. Would you go back? But because we did it when we were kids, right? I mean, 90s, Olive Garden, huge.
Starting point is 00:14:12 My son last week, he was like, Dad, you want to go to the Olive Garden? I was like, hell yeah, let's go, breadsticks. And then I was like, I don't really eat pasta anymore. So I just pounded the, pounded the salad. But all the things in the 90s, which we loved, now when we're adults, we have that brand loyalty to it. I mean, with the exception, I guess, of Tommy Hill figure shirts.
Starting point is 00:14:35 How were those cool? I don't really, I was just as bad a part of it as you were. I'm just saying what part about those shirts made them cool. I don't know. But we're loyal to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. 90s hip hop, still the best, right? Tupac and Biggie put it on right now and you're like, man, those are jams. Right?
Starting point is 00:15:00 Simpson's still kind of doing their thing. We're even quoting them as foreseeing world and national history before it actually happens. And every year we depend upon the Dallas Cowboys to be. what they used to be, and they're just not. They're just not. And it makes it fun. It makes it fun to have somebody like, man, can't wait to the Cowboys, hit the panic button.
Starting point is 00:15:24 One of the Cowboys going to fire Mike McCarthy. And by the way, Mike McCarthy, great in the 90s. So, I don't know, I just, I think it's, uh, he was actually better in the 2000s when he was in Green Bay. but as an offensive guru back in the 90s, he was very, very good too. The Dallas Cowboys show that, among other things in the United States,
Starting point is 00:15:55 we have great brand loyalty. And we especially have brand loyalty to what was successful, what was watchable, what was fun when we, and when I say we, and if you're younger than me, I understand.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Like you're having a hard time wrapping yourself around. Wait, you used to have a pay phone? and you would call, you would dial numbers and say your name or say your number real fast and hang up so you didn't have to pay. Yes, that was all part of our life. We look back lovingly and glowingly at the Cowboys because they had a stretch run where they were the best and the baddest there was. And there are spots that they have clear talent. But the number, the jerseys, the helmets, the memories, the voices, the faces on TV.
Starting point is 00:16:45 tell me a team outside maybe of Cleveland with the Deshawn Watson thing, tell me a team who's had a worst offseason in terms of injuries and of age and of just being okay. And look, I think the Eagles have a really good team. I'm not a buyer into jail and hurts long term. But the division is there for the taking. The Giants stink. Washington's trying to be the third team to resuscist.
Starting point is 00:17:18 to take Carson Wins's career and their best defensive players on the PUP list. Like the commanders, they're not very good and they know it. Eagles are talented, but like they're, I mean, Jaylen Hertz is a, is a borderline backup starter. He's fine. He's fine. You're the Dallas Cowboys and kind of a mess. Throwing in a guy that's not ready and some of it's bad luck, but a lot of it is,
Starting point is 00:17:48 we got dated information on that offensive line of the Cowboys. They haven't been the dominant group that they were five years ago in five years. But our brand loyalty to the Cowboys seems to have no end in sight. And the reality of it is they're just okay on that offensive side of the ball. In a league where you've got to be great that offensive side of the ball. All right, coming up. Lakers owner Jeannie Bus had a lot to say in a lot. a recent interview. All right. We'll have a Lakers insider on to break down what she actually meant
Starting point is 00:18:25 and what she actually said. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to? I do a little kill.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:21:17 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS. on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Doug Gottlieman for Collins to heard Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio app. We got a lot to get to. I actually have some Clippers thoughts for you. I know you're like, wait what? it'll make sense. Top of next hour. Adam Kaplan's going to join us
Starting point is 00:21:54 next hour as well. He's our Fox Sports Radio NFL insider. He also, he has a Eagles podcast. And we'll discuss the Eagles. Daniel Jeremiah will join us in the third hour of the show. We'll get you ready. Just a snippet of college football and a lot of NFL football today.
Starting point is 00:22:13 The Dodgers won their 90th game last night. Tonight you got Anderson versus DeGrom at City Field. You got some really good baseball. baseball, actually some tennis. I think we got to get into the Serena. Like, do we, are we going to point out that I don't think she's the goat? Or is that just because she's so successful and the movie was great and the story is great?
Starting point is 00:22:36 We're just going to all say she's the goat, even though she's not the goat. I don't know. We'll get to all that. But let's get back to this discussion on the Lakers from yesterday where Jeannie Buss. she had to clarify something she said in an interview where she initially said that Russell Westbrook was their best player last year. Then she clarified further and said, well, he's our most consistent. In other words, he played 78 games.
Starting point is 00:23:07 So that's something. Dan Wojke joins us. He covers the NBA and the Lakers for the L.A. Times. He joins us in the herd here on Fox Sports Radio. That one's a hard pill to swallow when you go, Russell Westbrook was our best player last year. Doug, if you asked my sophomore chemistry teacher if I was his best student, he would say, no. I didn't miss a day, though. I was there.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I was the most attending, I guess, right? And look, and I think that, I guess when you're the one who's signing these like $40, $50 million checks, right? Like availability is probably a bigger part of the equation than it is when it's not your money. But yeah, I mean, I think it's just, it's not the compliment anybody thinks it is, right? Let's just say for a second that Russell Westbrook was the most consistent player because he was there. I mean, that does kind of point out a bunch of other roster flaws and a bunch of other issues with the rest of the team.
Starting point is 00:24:09 It's not a compliment to anybody. It just kind of speaks to the issues that the Lakers experienced a year ago. and frankly maybe some of the issues that they're on the way they're experiencing this year. Patrick Beverly has come out and saying that they're hungry and he and Russell Westbrook are going to play together. But like Russell Westbrook
Starting point is 00:24:32 legitimately has beef with Patrick Beverly. 2013, they were the best team in the West. They were coming off at NBA finals. And he hurt his knee because Patrick Beverly tried to steal the ball when he's calling a timeout in the playoffs. Right? And that's a beef that. And that's a beef that has continually been brought up.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Do you believe they can coexist in a locker? I mean, look, I think at least for a short amount of time, maybe. I mean, I do think that, you know, Patrick Beverly is the kind of player who can endear himself to a two new teammates quickly. Like teammates, he is tortured, pestered, annoyed, angered in the past. You know, certainly went after plenty of guys on the Clippers when he was in Houston. and certainly went after plenty of guys on the Timberwolves when he was with the Clippers, right? So it's not like this is the first time he's going to have to do this.
Starting point is 00:25:22 It is the most personal, seemingly. You know, and I think, look, right? Like, Doug, you add all this stuff too, right? We're talking about playing together. What if Darvindham looks at a late-game matchup and thinks that it would be better to have Patrick Beverly on the floor than Russell West? You know what I mean? To me, that's how this stuff could get reignited, right? It's not so much that Russell Westbrook walks in the door and is upset about something necessarily that happened nine years ago.
Starting point is 00:25:47 I'm sure he remembers it very well. You know, I mean, this is definitely, I think, and this is true of a lot of high-level athletes. You know, they're pretty good grudge holders, you know. Like they tend to remember slights and things like that from the past. And this is certainly what qualify as that. But to me, I view it more as sort of like, you know, there isn't like the gasoline's already there, right? so like the spark could come from anything. And that's the calculus that the Lakers have to kind of look at.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Now, look, right? Like, there's still, I mean, there's still a, I would, I don't want to say a pretty good chance, but like certainly a chance that this never even comes to fruition. Right. As the Lakers still kind of like kick around less or Westbrook trade ideas. So I think here's the big question. Do they think they have a championship team?
Starting point is 00:26:37 Because the Beverly deal, the Beverly deal, while it creates a little bit of buzz and it creates this like, well, can these two coexist? You know, they've tweeted about each other, they hate each other, the beef hasn't died. Like, that's good, that's spicy. And Pat Bev is a guy who's way more talked about as a player than in terms of his actual effectiveness
Starting point is 00:26:57 as a player. But he's in a walk year from his contract. It freed up a bunch of cast space for next year. And if you look at the landscape of the West, like Golden State should actually be better this year with Weisman back. Denver gets Jamal Murray back. And Michael Porter.
Starting point is 00:27:16 And Michael Porter. But Jamal Murray might have been the best player in the bubble, right? The clippers get Kauai back and they've added John Wall and they look ready to go. New Orleans is New Orleans, we think, is going to have Zion and they were good last year. Dallas, one would think is going to be better because Luca gets better. It feels like Minnesota's. My point is like the rest of the West is better. and you're looking at the Lakers roster,
Starting point is 00:27:42 you're like, look, LeBron's still productive. He's not the same defensively. Not going to play every night. Anthony Davis, if healthy, very good player. But that, and then you look at them freeing up cap space for next year. It kind of feels like, hey, let's just be competitive this year and maybe go for it next year. Is that, or do they think they have a championship shot? I mean, I think, right, like that is ultimately the biggest question in all these trade
Starting point is 00:28:07 sort of manifestations, all of these sort of fake trades. that are, you know, trade proposals or things that the Lakers are considering, right? It's like, even beyond that is like if you're talking about trading a 27 first and a 29 first or even just one of those two, you know, doesn't make you a contender. And like, and not like a real contender, not like we've got a chance type of contender, but like a real, real contender. I think the thing that kind of gums up the thinking here, Doug, is that there's still a belief within the Lakers organization that a healthy LeBron James and a healthy Anthony Davis gives them a chance against anyone.
Starting point is 00:28:44 And that very well may be true. You know, now it's just a huge if, right? And it's been proven to be a big if these past two seasons. You know, we talk about kind of all those guys coming back and what that's going to mean to teams and stuff like that. And I think you're absolutely right. Like the West is going to look really different. It's hard to pick out a favorite, probably the Golden State Warriors. but, you know, because of Wiseman and emerging
Starting point is 00:29:09 Jonathan Kaminga and stuff like that, but Moses Moody. But, but, you know, Doug, I do think that part of this too, right, is like if the Lakers get like all NBA first team level Anthony Davis back, that changes a lot too. It just, it feels like we're pretty removed from it, right? It's been two, it's been two full seasons where we haven't really seen like Dominant AD, you know, for more than a month at a time. You know, we haven't seen LeBron kind of,
Starting point is 00:29:35 you know, avoid sort of what the natural sort of injuries that will come, you know, of someone, you know, in year 20 of the NBA. It's a fascinating question, right? And I just think that it would take a lot of courage to look at LeBron James Ross from the mirror and say, we're not good enough. We need to not go for it. I think when you talk to people around the league, they would view that to be like, I mean, like, then sort of what's the point of having LeBron? Right. Like, if you have them, you know, that's your size. Right, right. I mean, like, look, they'll be able to be competitive, but they're also, you know, he's going to break the scoring record. They're going to have, you know, they want them in the Lakers uniform for that sort of stuff.
Starting point is 00:30:20 The highlights matter. The highlights matter long term, sure. Yeah, and they want that arena filled, and the bronze still fills arenas. And Anthony Davis is still a supreme talent, but I just, you know, it doesn't feel like that's. I mean, look, I think, right. Like you can add Miles Turner and Buddy Heel to the Lakers roster. And you can, I mean, you can have a real conversation about whether or not that team is on paper better than Phoenix, Golden State, Denver, the Clippers. You know, like, I mean, that's a real conversation. You have to have.
Starting point is 00:30:50 And that's, I mean, that is why, like, when people, when you see this proposal, like, oh, I could get done if the lake, all the Lakers have to do is use two first. You know, you know, that's why they haven't jumped at anything. You know what I mean? Now, look, I do think that there are maybe some proposals out there. that can nudge the Lakers up in a different direction. I think if, you know, if Boyan Bogdanovich becomes available, like to me, like I look at him as like a player that is like a pretty perfect LeBron compliment offensively, certainly.
Starting point is 00:31:20 But look, like, Steve has still got defensive shortcomings. They still have stuff they have to figure out. They're going to need to get lucky that this isn't a, we're going to make one decision. And if it all goes right, you know, we're going to be holding up a trophy. they're not in that situation. Dan Wiki joins us. He covers the entire NBA and the Lakers for the L.A. Times. He joins us in The HARD.
Starting point is 00:31:41 You're on Fox Sports Radio. I'm Doug Gottlie, filling in for Colin Cowherd. Why hasn't Donovan Mitchell become a Nick yet? I mean, I think because no one likes to bid against themselves, you know, I think that has been like one of the big takeaways of this NBA offseason is that teams have not wanted to negotiate against themselves. much. I think obviously the Rudy Gober Hall sort of reset the market a little bit
Starting point is 00:32:12 and it made it not as palatable for teams that were chasing Kevin Durant, for teams that were kicking the tires on Kyrie Irving, and now for teams that are in the Donovan Mitchell, sort of sweepstakes, look, I mean, it does a lot of signs still point to this happening. It seems like it's the best interest of all parties. You know, there are good players that are involved, but I don't know that like Quinn Grimes should be a kicking point. If you think that Donovan Mitchell is the guy, you know, I'm not so sure he is,
Starting point is 00:32:40 but like if you're down that path, then you're down that path, I think. But I do think that, like, there's some cautionary tales. I mean, you do look, I think, you know, Carmelo, Anthony, I think it's, I think it's Carmelo Anthony, right? You don't want to, they, I would say, I mean, look at Anthony Davis, you know, which, like, which worked. But at least, but at least Anthony Davis, at least Anthony Davis, you won a title. Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks had a good young group and they and they got to the eastern conference finals i think once right with carmello but it was never what they thought it could be and part of it was they had to give up so much to get him when you know he was kind of panicking because the lockout was looming right but i think the carmelo
Starting point is 00:33:20 anthony deal is what's holding back i mean dog i mean like you know to the ad point i mean look this is a lakers team that that has never won a playoff series in los angeles with him or lebron james right and they don't have, they don't have their sort of draft, their draft, that's me, perhaps in control until 2026. I mean, I do think that, like, yes, you're right. Like, you know, they won and I would say that they absolutely won that trade. But if you talk to people around the league, like, you know, did they win the negotiation? Like, probably not. And I do think that, you know, there is, like, some sort of hesitancy where you look at these front offices when it comes to forfeiting, four or five picks, you know, the Minnesota situation seems like it could be unique.
Starting point is 00:33:59 a new general manager, new ownership, you know, this kind of young core. Like that seems to maybe be an outlier, but, you know, I don't know. To me, like, the next thing, I think the Carmelo Anthony thing is also, it's a great point. It's like, you know, you push a bunch of young players in for one guy, and if that's not the guy that can get you to the finals, should you do it, I don't know. I mean, it's tricky. Stars matter in this league, and you need to have them, but you need to have the right one. Dan Wojke, joining us.
Starting point is 00:34:29 He covers the NBA and the Lakers to the LA Times. Doug Gottliebun for Colin, this is the herd. Do you believe that the Nets are really going to have Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durand in uniform when the season begins? I do. I really do. I mean, I think that is the path of least resistance, you know, right now. And I think everybody involves sort of realize that that when you're talking about these big sort of franchise altering decisions and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:34:59 If they're not on the terms you like, it's just sort of easier to, you know, run it back isn't always based out of confidence. I mean, think about, think about all the, the friendship and relationships in people's lives that they stayed in a little longer than they needed to, just because it was easier to do it.
Starting point is 00:35:15 And I think that that can sometimes extend to basketball and stuff like that. And I think that, you know, if this wasn't going to be on our terms, like it made the most sense to do it. Now, I think, um, sort of like the Beverly Westwood situation, it does set the stage of like this like pretty
Starting point is 00:35:30 powerful undercurrent that, you know, whereas in a normal scenario, if you get off to a one and four start, you know, whatever, it's a long season and people can kind of get past it. Now it's this stuff already kind of like bubbling. There's all these like really easy built in sort of distractions, all these really easy built and sort of storylines to the season. None of us has to develop. It's already all there. And so that to me is like, what if this team hits adversity early?
Starting point is 00:36:01 You know, that'll be the true test. But, you know, as far as getting the opening day, you know, I think they're kind of through the weeds. Yeah. Well, I mean, look, people have forgotten. They actually haven't had a training camp under Steve Nash where they've had all three stars participating. They just, they haven't. First year they traded, obviously, for James Hardin, you know, mid-year. And then, of course, Kyrie with the vaccine.
Starting point is 00:36:27 And then they didn't have Ben Simmons until midseason. So they've never, you can't have a system unless you can actually put in a system. So it's challenging any coach, let alone somebody who previous to this had never coached before. Hey, Dan, great stuff is, go ahead. I'm sorry. I was just, Doug, I think to our earlier point, too, and also I think speaks to teams value in continuity, right? You make a really good point. And I think that was another reason why teams are a little bit.
Starting point is 00:36:54 more hesitant when it came to pushing in for some of these stars. Is that like continuity matters? Does matter. Dan, Woyke, L.A. Times. Follow them on social media. Dan, thanks so much for joining us. All right, thanks, Doug. Talk to you soon.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Let's get to Ryan Music with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Good morning, Ryan. What do you got? Hey, good morning, Doug. Good to be here with you. We'll hit on some NFL real quick.
Starting point is 00:37:23 It was cut down day. across the league. One of the big moves was the Raiders, cutting 2021 first-round pick, Alex Leatherwood. You can say it wasn't much of a surprise, considering the struggles that he had playing left tackle in Vegas in the NFL. It's also stamps an end to the... But it was only one year, though, right?
Starting point is 00:37:42 Like, okay, so there's a couple parts to it. Remember, and this is... This is important to remember. You know, the number one TV show I would show a kid or somebody who wants to get into business. Athletics doesn't really matter. You want to know what that show is? What's that?
Starting point is 00:37:59 Survivor. Okay. Because Survivor is not actually about survival. Well, it is, but it's about survival in that, it's about your alliances, right? That's really what happens. It's about your alliances. And do I think Alex Leatherwood is good? I mean, clearly the Raiders have seen him up close and do not think that he's good enough
Starting point is 00:38:18 based upon the salary that he's making. But if... Mike Mayock and John Gruden were still there. He would still be a Raider. Why? They drafted him. They want to give him every possible opportunity to succeed. It's the world.
Starting point is 00:38:34 If you watch where guys go inside, they'll go and sign at a place for the original general manager or the scout that discovered them or the position coach or a former head coach. Everyone aligns with people that they've previously known or had success with. That's what Survivor is about. That's what surviving in business is. about. So again, I mean, look, you get cut when you're in the NFL's first round draft pick. That's a wow. But a lot of it is about who's running the show now, as opposed to who is running it when you signed or were selected. Sure. I mean, it certainly plays a big factor.
Starting point is 00:39:10 I also think it was a huge reach that most draft experts were criticizing at the time. And he played very poorly and was given every opportunity as a starter. to prove that he belonged. But it certainly was a stamp ending the tumultuous John Gruden era with the Raiders. Obviously, we know everything that happened off the field during his time as an analyst, and that's what ultimately ended to his coaching career coming to an end. Well, remember, you have, my look, Alex Sutherwood Cut, Henry Ruggs is in jail. Damon Arnett, gone, right?
Starting point is 00:39:47 Correct. Cleland and Farrell's gone, I believe. I believe he's still on the team. He's still on the team. So it's Cleveland, Farrell, Josh Jacobs, Jonathan Abrams. All three firsts around picks from 2019 are still on the team. They just had their fifth year option declined. So basically it's a ticking clock on how much longer they'll actually be on the roster.
Starting point is 00:40:11 Correct. I mean, they're playing Josh Jacobs in the first preseason game in two different series. Like that is not a sign of a guy who they want to have stick around for a long term. The point is that I actually liked what the Raiders. did in theory in completely scrapping it when Gruden got there and you know you traded away Khalil Mack because the point was to resign Khalil Mack we don't have the money to go out and spend and we need the draft capital and we got to start over even with Kalil Mack they weren't any good so why not start over and they end up being in the playoffs despite the fact
Starting point is 00:40:46 that man they their first round picks were a mess under Grude just a mess Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. Speaking of Gruden, we do have some sound of John Gruden at an event in Arkansas, and it felt like a legitimate apology, a legitimate apology. I mean, it felt honest. It felt heartfelt.
Starting point is 00:41:14 But there's one big part missing to the John Gruden. I won another chance. We'll get to that a little bit later on the show. But coming up next, what does having Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup mean for the Niners? How about we hear from the Niners? Next in The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's Ben.

Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:44:11 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look back at it, podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:44:34 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:44:57 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What up? Doug Gottlie. Been for Colin. This is the herd. Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio app. Hope you having a great day.
Starting point is 00:45:13 You know, we talked a good amount yesterday about Jimmy Garoppolo, signing a deal to be a backup quarterback in San Francisco. It's weird. It's awkward, but it does on many levels make sense, right? Gives them a break glass in case of emergency sort of guy. Also, they maintain the asset
Starting point is 00:45:32 who is Jimmy Garoppolo and he's much more tradable at $6.5 million than he was at like $29 million that I think was like $25 million against the cap. But then there's the awkwardness of the quarterback room, right? You know? You're sitting in my seat.
Starting point is 00:45:48 it's not your seat anymore, Jimmy. Kyle Shanahan talked about the win-win of having Jimmy on the team. We were always clear to Jimmy that him salary cap-wise and stuff in a backup role and supporting Trey and that, and if that worked for him, that was a no-brainer
Starting point is 00:46:04 for us. We just didn't think the chances of that were going to happen. And it ended up being that way. So when it was all said and done, even though it was pretty shocking to us, we thought it was a win-win for both sides. I think that's a really true and honest and telling statement. do you think for one second Jimmy Garoppolo would have taken $6.5 million if there was 10 or 15, $20 million somewhere else?
Starting point is 00:46:25 Like, do you think that? It's pretty obvious that wasn't out there. Otherwise, he would have made a ruckus and made them release him since they couldn't trade him. Like, it's his agent and Jimmy, I'm sure they were, I'm sure they were 31 phone calls made. 31 phone calls me. And right at this time of year, at this time of year, it's really hard to find a team that needs a quarterback
Starting point is 00:47:00 unless there's a catastrophic Teddy Bridgewater type of injury. Doesn't mean that won't change. But Kyle Shannon's like, look, we always wanted it to be a backup. Always. We just didn't think that he would take, you know, $6.5 million. Here's Shanahan talking about the value of having, Jimmy G as a backup quarterback.
Starting point is 00:47:21 There aren't 32 starting quarterbacks in this league, and we believe we have two of them now, and that's really rare to have them in the situation, and that's why we didn't have them in meetings. That's why we didn't put him out to practice, because we nor Jimmy, or really probably anyone else in the league, believed that was how the outcome was going to be. We feel fortunate that it did.
Starting point is 00:47:43 And a lot of this comes down to timing, right? Would they have dealt him? Could they have dealt him before the draft? you know, before somebody, yeah, they would have. The problem was that he had shoulder surgery on his throwing shoulder. So you're not going to trade for somebody who just had shoulder surgery. You don't know if he can actually throw a football. So the timing ended up helping the Niners and kind of screwing Jimmy Garoppolo, right?
Starting point is 00:48:11 And then once he got healthy, he was in camp. Now you kind of talk yourself into what you have and being set and bringing in a guy. And it doesn't really make sense. It's a lot of money. And here's Shanahan on Trey Lance. We feel very strongly given the keys to Trey. We were really excited at what we thought that could do for our team as a whole. And we're excited about everything he's done and all these opportunities
Starting point is 00:48:33 gone throughout this off season. And I can't wait to get him started on our team in week one. And having Jimmy there as a backup makes us feel really good because we have a starting quarterback as a backup. The rest of the league had a chance to get him. And I'm just so, feel so fortunate that he's still here in that case. You know what this is? This is a case of you ordered a new car.
Starting point is 00:48:55 It came in. You got the new car. You finally start driving it. Instead of trading in your car, you're like, ah, I got to fix a couple things. By the time you fixed it up, like, you couldn't get the value you wanted for that car. So you're like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:49:07 The car's already paid off. I want a weekend car anyway. And I want to throw miles on the new car. Like, I'll just keep it. And then eventually I'll move on from it. When they're right, you know, I just ask for a price and eventually I'll get the price that I want. All right.
Starting point is 00:49:22 All right. Coming up next. You know, there's something the Lakers are doing, which I can relate to. I think many people can possibly relate to. Sometimes people search for meaning. Sometimes people search for relevance. I think that's what the Lakers are searching for.
Starting point is 00:49:44 That's next in the hurt. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert. Smygel and Friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
