Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Winning on Clay is an art. The rallies are relentless. And at the French Open, only the toughest survive. I'd know. I competed there for decades. Join me, Renee Stubbs, on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast for no-nonsense breakdowns of the biggest matches, the toughest players, and the moments that define Roland Garris. She can win.
Starting point is 00:01:21 She's an outsider to win the French fame. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any service. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on. A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:02:25 How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen to learn the hard way on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, thanks for listening to the Covino Enrich podcast. Starting point is 00:03:02 All right. Hey, Danny G. Can we rebranded again to see in our Playhouse? The Funhouse is good, but I like to playhouse. All right. For Friday fun time. Join in and pull yourself up a chair. Like cherry.
Starting point is 00:03:18 That the fun begin. Kavino and Rich, broadcasting live from the Tyraq.com studio from the Playhouse. Tyraq.com will help you get there in unmatched selection, fast-free shipping, free road hazard protection, over 10,000 recommended installers. Tyraq.com the way tire buying should be. And don't forget the Fox Sports Radio YouTube channel, all the clips, all the videos. In fact, yesterday's overpromised. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Fantastic. We did some old school baseball card opening. We talked about all the weird food at stadiums now. Like that 16 inch sausage that people are eyeing up. Yeah. This is 16 inch sausage for real. I'm just walking up. Hey, Spot.
Starting point is 00:04:00 He's here. Danny G. is here. Iowa Sam is here. And would you look to the left? Left center. Moncy, Bolanos is here. Hi, Monty. Be Friday.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Moncy, you got to check out Overpomis. This is our bonus pod. It's on Fox Sports Radio's YouTube page. It might be the second best thing we're doing. We're doing a lot of things. This is number one, obviously. But our bonus pod is where it's at. It's a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It's visual. You can watch it. You play along at home. We do it on Thursdays. Whatever we don't fit into this show, we do on Overpromise. So follow it wherever you stream or watch it on Fox Sports Radio's YouTube page. Now, a lot to get to today. Lots of games to play.
Starting point is 00:04:41 You have lots of games today, huh? Danny G. It's a game day. It is Friday. It's such a casual Friday. I'm not sure Rich got dressed today. Oh, my God. What are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:04:50 He's wearing an awesome shirt. No, I'm pretty sure he's wearing his pajamas. I'm wearing Jim shorts and a Mike Tyson T-shirt. In fact, our boss hit us up and he goes, Hey, you guys cool making like a video for a possible client? And Camino's like, quit doing Monday. I feel like I just rolled out of bed. Yeah, no, we all, on a Friday, seriously, we don't do our Patreon.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Like I said, we do a lot of things. Overpromised. We do music stuff on SiriusXM. This is our number one priority, Fox Sports Radio. But we also do a Patreon podcast. And on Fridays, we don't do it. Today's Friday. So it's a glorious Friday.
Starting point is 00:05:24 We get to sleep in, go to the gym, take a walk. So we show up basically in our PJs. What happened to you stay ready so you don't have to get ready? Well, we do. Every day except for Friday. Oh, okay, got you. I'm ready to run. Yeah, we're ready for the weekend.
Starting point is 00:05:38 We're ready to relax. Okay. So, guys, hope you had a great Thursday night of Brony James. Would you have ever thought I would have said it and meant it? Hope you had a Bronny James sort of night. I can't say that we told you so, but we did tell you to look out for a big night for Brony. because, I mean, they had a turn to him yesterday. Well, not only that, I said it during yesterday's show,
Starting point is 00:06:02 and I'm certainly not doing, though, I told you so. But I did say with all those players out, even if the Lakers only put up, I said, if they only put up minimal points, someone had to score them. And would you believe Ronnie's 17 points, couple threes, made a sweet pass that made like the highlight reel. So, you know what?
Starting point is 00:06:21 No, but dude, he was hitting floaters, hitting threes, like you said. I may have been wrong about Ronnie. Full court passes. He had 17 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds. The athleticism, though, is noticeable. And again, the touch, he seems like he has a nice touch, a little floater, like I said. He just looked nice. He looked good.
Starting point is 00:06:43 So can he grow from there? Absolutely. He's a rookie. And even guys like Stephen A. Smith, I may have been wrong. I may have been wrong about Brani. You know, you have to give him his props. If we're going to dump on the guy and talk about nepotism and he doesn't belong there and this and that, hey, he's a rookie, he played a good game.
Starting point is 00:07:03 Maybe he just needs more opportunity. But you're changing your tune after one game. Dude, he's a good. No, he was running past. One game. That's last night. Thank you. He had to foul him a few times.
Starting point is 00:07:13 What do you mean one game that he actually had to play? He hasn't had that much playing time. I'm sorry, in the Bronx. But when there's nothing to lose and there's no, like you said, it's like nobody was expecting the Lakers to win that game. No. So when you go in with that mentality, is it really what he's kids? Like, I'm not trying to take away from Bronny.
Starting point is 00:07:29 I don't dislike the kid. But on one game, it's something to build off. On the flip side, though, what if he had gone one for 18? Yeah, it's something to build off of it. Unfortunately for him, no matter what he does, he's going to be talked about. Unfortunately for him. But the Lakers lost. I mean, Motsie, if he was on the clippers, he put up 17 at least every night, right?
Starting point is 00:07:47 Probably. Okay. Look, they lost this loss. That was low. It's something to build off of, and you got to figure the timing's great because just yet. Yesterday we were talking about how he said he sees the criticism. He's aware of it and it motivates him. So he sort of put it where his mouth was and he showed it last night.
Starting point is 00:08:05 It shows that the pressure's not going to get to him. He looked good. Why can't you acknowledge that he had an incredible game, single game, without issuing a formal apology for what you've said before that? Because Stephen A's ass. I'm sorry. It's like just it was one game. It's like acknowledge it.
Starting point is 00:08:21 And then once it becomes, you know, a trend or a regular thing, then maybe you can issue a broken clock is right twice a day. Exactly. I think we all know why. He's trying to get it back in LeBron's good graces. Right. No doubt. No doubt.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Hey, you know what? It poses a question that might be fun to start the show with. There's so many rando stories today in the world of sports that we're going to have fun with. Nepotism, a word that's thrown around so much in sports and entertainment and music. Nepo babies. Nepo babies. It really is like a... Nepotism.
Starting point is 00:08:52 An eye-rolling buzzword. Nepotism sounds like a... a word that means something else. I'll give you another example. When Kavino was going through his divorce. See, it took seven minutes for me to bring up your divorce today. Yeah, man. Wow.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Seven minutes. I remember I sat down with Kavino at his divorce attorney's office because I'm like a great friend like that. I'm the best guy. And his divorce attorney said, Steve, you're such a mench. And I'm like, well, you know, she talking smack to you? Yeah, I thought she was talking smack. A minch is a good thing.
Starting point is 00:09:21 I thought she wanted to throw hands. Like a minch doesn't sound like a good word. Mench means you're a swell fella. Nepotism. It's Yiddish. Sounds like you need... Sounds like... Something out of a drug commercial.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Like you need Valtrex for it. Yeah, nepotism. It doesn't sound like what it is. But what about it, Rich. Sky Rizzy. For your nepotism. So, LeBron, you know, goes above and beyond to try to make the path easier for Brani.
Starting point is 00:09:49 We would all do anything for our kids. That's something we all forget, right? By the way, the interesting part of that story is, Yeah, it's so obvious. But it does happen in every other industry. Why is it so odd when it happens in sports? So it poses the question of what industries are you okay with nepotism? And what industries are you not?
Starting point is 00:10:09 Like if John's plumbing has been run by good old John Johnson for 30 years and he hands it over to his son. And now his son's like, I'm in a plumbing company. That's not nepotism. That's a family business. Because it's like if his son was with him all of the. time learning the job, I don't think that's nepotism. I think that's just handing it off to your descendants. Nepotism would be
Starting point is 00:10:31 like if you gave your son like a high profile job that like other... He has no experience in. Really other qualified plumbers were going after, but your son who's a novice got that job. That's like when Billy Madison was going to be the air of the
Starting point is 00:10:47 Madison Hotel Fortune Vega. That's nepotism. Billy past the third grade. Oh, I'm going to make a huge statement. Well, you could argue about Bronny's, you know, playing days all through school and almost dying on the court at USC. That's true. It's not like he just walked onto a court, you know, one day and was like, I want to play. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:05 We all know LeBron did this for himself and not his kid, right? Yeah, but let's all be real. He would have been here. It's a beautiful thing. It is. Just maybe not as soon. Who me? He's just there a little sooner than he would have been.
Starting point is 00:11:17 I mean, so when it comes to, all right, maybe the plumbing example, I was saying I'm quick to the punch on that. But let's say he's quick to the point. To the point, no fake quick to the plum. If you're Dr. Bus, Dr. Bus, and, you know, your kids are the people that run the Lakers. That's not nepotism in your mind in some capacity? No, I think, like, definitely you're handing off like a billion dollar enterprise to your children. Like, it's kind of like a succession. Are you watching Running Point on the waves?
Starting point is 00:11:47 Yeah. On Netflix? I mean. No, I know the premise of it, but, yeah, like, didn't, didn't, um, Jeannie Busch? She had to kind of, like, wrestle away control from her brothers. who were just incompetent at running things. Which is the plot line. And she's doing a better job than them for sure.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Which is the plot line of running point. Of running point. My point is that we see nepotism and favoritism all the time. I just wonder why we have such a, I don't think I can say that on Fox. Hold on. Why do we have such a problemo with it? Because nepotism at its core is giving a job that should go to a much more skilled individual, that job because of their name alone.
Starting point is 00:12:30 And yes, it's getting an opportunity where an opportunity wouldn't exist just strictly based on your family. Yeah, but there's more to it than just that because guess what? You know who gets the last of years when they're in the game? You know, the fans are most excited about when they're in the game? You know, who could probably put more asses in the seats and other rookies that you don't know, Brody James. There's still value in him.
Starting point is 00:12:51 And I always have an issue when people really harp on Nipo. babies and nepotism because I think that will open the door. But once you're through that door, if you don't deliver on your own, you will fall flat and it'll be embarrassing. And the reality is, ba-bam, there's an artist right now that's big on the pop scene. Your kids may listen to her.
Starting point is 00:13:12 I was saying, if you want to cue up some Gracie Abrams, she's a hot young artist who opens her Taylor Swift, she's got a couple pop songs that are top 10. I didn't even dawn. It didn't dawn to me. I didn't realize it was JJ Abrams' daughter. But you know what? If she stunk, would the songs be big?
Starting point is 00:13:29 It all comes out in the wash. You could get that advantage in life, but you're right. You have to deliver. I mean, we just talked about running point. Kate Hudson. Doesn't she come from a Hollywood family? Yeah, Goldie Hans her mother. I mean, if Kate Hudson stunk, guess what?
Starting point is 00:13:44 We'd see her in a couple things and then we'd be like, that fades away. That label will go away if you are good. If you're up to snuff, it'll disappear. Well, isn't that the argument with Ronnie? Like he wasn't coming in. Well, but again, we need to see him do it like over an entire season, not just one. But he was given an opportunity that if he was just, you know, Bronny Johnson coming out of college, he wouldn't even got a second look by anybody.
Starting point is 00:14:07 He's only 20. I know. He would have been there eventually. He was. Eventually, but not now. He has been playing well in the G league. And our argument at the start of the season was too bad. It wasn't for a different G league where he's not in his dad's shadows.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Like, Brony James should be playing in the NCAA tournament. For like Duquesne, yeah. Yeah, like not. He didn't go through a full cycle of college. You're not here at Rich's point then. There's so many other examples in life where people just have advantages because of who their parents are. This advantage was always going to be there.
Starting point is 00:14:36 I just think a lot of us feel like it was extremely rushed, especially with the year that he had at USC, which was not even a complete year. So this just was rushed. It was always going to happen. We're about to see Bryce. We're about to see all three of them. He was running past Janus last night. But that's why I was looking good.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Janice was really trying. There was never a question as to that game. That's why I said LeBron. Sounds like someone sipping on the haterate today. It's not a hater. It's being realistic. Monci ate and he just stating. LeBron did it for LeBron. He didn't do it for Bronny. He wanted to have that historical moment of his father playing with his son.
Starting point is 00:15:11 My royal family tree. That's why it was rushed. But what's wrong with that? There's nothing wrong with that. But to, you know, deny that it, like Bonzi said, it was rushed and it was inappropriate time and he was too soon. And that, you know, it was. was a huge moment of nepotism.
Starting point is 00:15:26 But he can't control what family he was born into, so you guys are making a good point. It's up to him right now. No, I know, but look at our business for an example. Howard Stern's dad was in radio. Yeah. All right? He helped Howard get into radio.
Starting point is 00:15:40 That's a big story. At a small local level, right? Howard had to be the man, though. Yeah, exactly. He changed his voice. Remember, you went from like, huh to. Hold on. Take a time out for a second.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Think about this in every industry. There's a big story going on. now in the broadcasting world. And it's interesting because a guy that we admire and have always said nice things about, Mad Dog Russo. Mad Dog Russo has his own channel on Sirius XM, Mad Dog Radio, Mike and the Mad Dog. Good afternoon, everybody. If you grew up on the East Coast, I mean, there was no one bigger.
Starting point is 00:16:13 In fact, Mike and the Mad Dog paved the way for Colin and Dan and Stephen A and all these people. There would be none of that. There's a 30 for 30 about him. Now, Mad Dog Rousseau. Who's made millions and millions and billions and billions? One of the best in the sports radio game was quick to criticize LeBron and Brony, like so many people. Meanwhile, in the news yesterday, he got the old, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Hold on, Mad Dog, because Mad Dog Russo's kid is a broadcaster in South Florida. And Mad Dog went on a rant about how none of the New York Mets at spring training would give my son a chance to, like, he acknowledged, I sound like LeBron here, but you could. couldn't give me anybody on the Mets. Not one MET gave his son time for an interview. And he lost it. He flipped out.
Starting point is 00:17:03 So how do you feel about that? My thoughts on that were just because it's mad dog Rousseau doesn't mean his son should get an interview. But not one MET could have stepped up. That was my thought. Like not one MET. Nobody wanted to interview him. There's, again, layers, different industries, like you said. I would say I made the distinction.
Starting point is 00:17:25 If it's a small business, you're just passing it down. I would say in the medical field is where I feel like nepotism should never be. You know, just because your dad ran that office doesn't mean that you should be checking my scrotum. I would say that would be. You still have to go through medical school. Yeah. That word was set on Fox Sports radio. But it doesn't mean you're going to be a great doctor.
Starting point is 00:17:46 It doesn't. I don't want to. Just because your dad ran that practice, I don't buy into that. Hey, Steve Camino, drop your drawers. Yeah. Turn your head and cough. The weird part is, his son wasn't even a doctor. Guys, put it in perspective.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Honestly, it's an honor to make it this far, right? You're an at elite status and level. It's still a game. People need to relax. Can I ask? You're either going to step up or you're not. And if he doesn't, he's not going to last long. Can I just say that my parents always told me growing up, use your connections and use,
Starting point is 00:18:18 use what the people you know, have them help you out. It's a privilege, but you should help yourself that way. Could I say that when Aunt Becky, Lori Loughlin and some of those Hollywood elites got in trouble for trying to get their kids into colleges, I believe rightfully so they got punished. But I can't tell you, I don't understand. Because if you're a parent. But they paid. No, but I'm saying as a different story. That was a different story.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Hold on. But I'm saying as a parent, you realize you would do anything for your kid. Danny J., you would do anything for COA. Yeah. And so you could understand it. I mean... Oh, I helped him start his new podcast last week. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:59 There is legacy in academia. There is, like, where if you've gone to, like, a prestigious university and you're the child of that person, you do get a, you do get a look because of that. No doubt. I mean, how many times... And high donors. How many donors are like, oh, you know, your kid's an F up. But, you know, dad and grandpa both went to Yale.
Starting point is 00:19:16 So all of a sudden, this guy who stinks. Oh, by the way, you know, since we're talking sports, too, another example. that don't fly with you, you don't think just because of the name on the back of the jersey, there's extra players in baseball and football that get the extra look, but they get the extra look and acknowledgement because of who they are. Freaking Mike Piazza got in just because of his connection with his dad and Lassorta, you know, and you got to step up.
Starting point is 00:19:43 That's really what it comes down to. It doesn't matter if it gives you an advantage. If you don't deliver, this is a game of winning. You're out. Rich is only here because of his Uncle Boza. The clown. Did you know that? Those are the clown.
Starting point is 00:19:53 My uncle. That's how he got to switch to the entertainment business. His uncle, Chili Davis. People don't realize. Spots real dad, Mr. Belvedere. He was, you know that? Lynn Belvedere.
Starting point is 00:20:05 We've all had some people. Yeah, I was going to say, Covino, we've all had people help us in our lives, maybe in our careers. And we've all like what Sam was saying. Not just his parents. A lot of our parents told us, college, number one thing,
Starting point is 00:20:19 make really good connections. you know, choose the right people to hang out with and do well with your professors and all that. And people lean on that throughout their life. Dale Barra, yogi's kid, Pete Rose's kid, Tony Gwyn's kid, all decent players, but probably wouldn't have gotten that look if it wasn't for that famous name behind that jersey or that nod, that acknowledgement. And it didn't last for them. But again, it proves what we're saying.
Starting point is 00:20:47 It may have got them there, but they didn't stay there. I just think bringing it back to Brani, the whole thing with him that we've had this conversation ad nauseum from the start of being drafted. He didn't have the stats coming into the league. So what? But I'm just saying that's the whole thing here. That was the whole argument here. It's about skill set at that point.
Starting point is 00:21:07 And I think we could all agree on one thing. He wasn't ready to come into the NBA. But maybe at some point, but it was rushed a little bit because of LeBron. Yes. He was also. He was already now. Oh, I was going to say. was coming off, I was going to say injury.
Starting point is 00:21:22 You can't call that an injury, but an incident where it almost ended his life. Right. But if he was ready, he would have been playing before last night. He played last night because the Lakers rested everyone in their mom. Yeah. And you know what? He got an opportunity and he looked good. If he keeps doing it here and there, then, okay, good for him.
Starting point is 00:21:42 I got to put up at least 10 points last night. Yeah, but you're acting like that. I played that. Ready? Hold on. Hey, Rich and Kavino go here. I can run up with the illness. You guys ready to step up and do a killer show?
Starting point is 00:21:54 Yeah. Monsi, you are because you're doing it all the time. Spont. All the time. You all of a sudden you'd be slaying it on the air. He stepped up and he played a big game. You got to give him credit where it's too. I do. You're going to be so quick to dump on the guy and say, oh, you rush to.
Starting point is 00:22:09 I sounds a little negative to me. I just don't even think it's a story. Oh, no, no. I'm not mad. I think it's too soon to pull a complete 180 on your outlook on him. Maybe like a 45. You could put like a 45 or like an ID. I would see how you play against the bucks.
Starting point is 00:22:25 But our show wasn't negative about him like the other shows were Spottie. Never. Spots said he could score 10 points. I think he could just drink 10 pints in the stands. Thanks, thank you. I could have a couple threes, I think. The point is, you know, that's just like, oh, there it is.
Starting point is 00:22:42 Got him, got him. Your problem is, like, how life works. And we're seeing it in the NBA. But in reality, it's just the game, guys. and the game is a great equalizer. If you don't belong there, the game will let you know. Yeah. It's a good point.
Starting point is 00:22:55 You see that with music. You see it with acting. You see it with all arenas where, quote, nepotism could happen. Yep. You got to keep your, you got to hold your own or else, like Kavino said. There have been players that got a look. Maybe they got them into the big show, but then they go away quick. They go away quickly.
Starting point is 00:23:14 All right. Well, hey, coming up, there is a college coach that is. He's throwing down a rule that I think might be the dumbest coaching rule I've ever heard in sports history. I don't know how he thinks this is going to work, but we'll do it next right here. Starting point is 00:24:39 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to a first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:24:56 Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and Friends.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed a game. Starting point is 00:26:51 The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis, and I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Jen should win. I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now and I actually can win on any surface because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:27:44 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app,
Starting point is 00:28:06 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, Rich, is that why you're wearing your dancing shoes to dance the blues today? Just dance. Rich Davis. his casual pajama Friday. Covino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio. It's always fun to have Monci hanging out with us and Sam on the ones and twos.
Starting point is 00:28:30 Danny G., the best producer in the game. Yeah. Thank you guys. Covino, you're the man. Thanks, Danny. And Spotty's on the videos. Guys, we put up videos all the time. Appreciate if you like them.
Starting point is 00:28:42 At Covino. The, uh, and Rich. Seventh best producer in the game. By the way, I posted a seven clip of, clip of Gary Vaynerchuk, Rich, when he was on our show from Super Bowl, if you want to check it out. It's a fun one.
Starting point is 00:28:55 At Steve Covino. Thank you guys for all the support. We're live from the tire rack.com studio. CNR, that's us. Brought to you by Travis Matthew. Dude, can't tell you how sweet their gear is, man. I'm loving it. Did you get a new box?
Starting point is 00:29:08 Because I did. Did you get, bro, I'm just so happy anytime a box arrives for me. And then when it's a Travis Matthew box, I'm like, ah. I feel like I got something better than you or else he would have brought it up. Why would you get? Travis Matthew met shirts. Oh yeah, they have the sports line. Dude, I got the Yankees shirts.
Starting point is 00:29:26 What? Yeah, I couldn't believe it. Yeah, I opened it up and I'm like, ooh. Riches is a half shirt though. Yeah, it bites a belly shirt. Yeah, yeah. He's got the little belly ones. Travis Matthew, so sweet.
Starting point is 00:29:37 Apparel designed for confidence and comfort no matter where the day he takes you, visit Travis Matthew.com. You get 20% off your first order when you sign up for email. That's Travis Matthew.com. Again, 20% off your first order when you sign up for email and look out for those sports ones too. But lightweight fabrics, if you're trying to buy some stuff for spring or summer, get that 20% off. When you say Mets belly shirts, that's the Soto edition, right? That's the grimmest edition.
Starting point is 00:30:02 Good one. But thank you again, Travis Matthew. All right. Hey, coming up a little later, we're going to debut a brand new game. And I was thinking about this a lot last week when you were on vacation. Yeah. You were on the beach with your younger girlfriend, Jordan. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Guess who else was on the beach with their younger girlfriend, Jordan? Who? Bill Belichick. Bingo. So we're going to play a game called, is it Steve Kavino or Bill Belichick? I love that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Giving away prizes.
Starting point is 00:30:35 Hey, if you want to play the game as multiple choice, your chance to win a swiggy next hour. What are you laughing about, Moncie? I just can't wait. It's going to be real tough. It's going to be real tough to figure out if it was your Bill Belichick. It's going to be hard. It's like we're the same guy. I know.
Starting point is 00:30:50 You're dressed like Belichick today. I know. What's going on? Am I turning into this guy? So, Rich, you got to talk about your dancing story. This is great. No more dancing on TikTok. Again, we were out of town last week getting already, you know, really much like the baseball season.
Starting point is 00:31:09 We get ready for the new ratings period. So we take off right before baseball. baseball starts right around March band this time. So we were away. You were on the beach. I was on the beach and we missed this story along the way. And it has to do with TikTok and Instagram and college players. West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez has decided that he's banning his players from dancing on TikTok. Now, you may have seen this floating around for like the last week, but we've never talked about this.
Starting point is 00:31:43 and I thought about it more, and it's ridiculous. Why? We talked about Ron Washington banning phones in the clubhouse yesterday. It's thinking outside the box. Rich Rod. If they have a bad season, will it ever come back to, well, if they let them dance on TikTok, it would have been different. It's an experiment. No, I, you know what?
Starting point is 00:32:06 I disagree because I feel like there's something to be said about being loose. You know what I always tell my kids when I'm coaching because I'm the number one coach on Fox Sports Radio? I don't know if you know that. But I always tell them, I'm like, all right, come on, get loose. Bend those knees. Come on, get loose. Get loose. And then I say, get loose.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Let me see a smile. Get loose. Do you play foot loose for them like a nerd? So let me read this real quick. And then do you put on your Sunday shoes? Then we'll discuss. On your dancing shoes. West Virginia football coach, Rich Rodriguez, told reporters that he was prohibiting his players from dancing on TikTok
Starting point is 00:32:38 because he didn't like the perception it gave about his program. If they're going to be on it, I know they're going to be on it, so I'm not banning it. I'm just banning them from dancing on it. It's like, look, we try to have a hard edge or whatever. And you're in there with your tights dancing on TikTok. It ain't quite the image of our program I want. I think that's fair, man. I do.
Starting point is 00:33:01 I think that's fair. Just to, this is, this actually came out six hours ago from front office sports. This is not a written policy. It is just something that he's like, I don't want to catch you guys dancing on. I make them look soft, dude. I discussed this with my wife. I agree. And my wife said, how could she,
Starting point is 00:33:19 my wife would say, how could this coach think he could monitor the TikTok pages of 53 plus dudes? Can't. How? By just laying down the law. He's discouraged it. You want to play for me? You want to be on my good side? Don't act like an ass clown. In a world of NIL.
Starting point is 00:33:34 Why is everybody so against rules? In a world of NIL, when kids are trying to make money and find ways to become popular, now you're telling kids don't be creative and do things on TikTok you need to dance you need to play football dude you need to dance you tell you're going to tell Livy
Starting point is 00:33:50 done to stick to the high beam then join go on the grind go on dance fever go do something else we're here for football not to see your choreography give me a break dude put something cool up about how great you are football if you're trying to set an image it's like you know a lot of times I have this problem
Starting point is 00:34:06 with you I'm trying to create an image of a show we're a cool young show and you're doing goofy things on social media that have nothing to do with the image. You've been eating tithpods again? Yeah. He's like, what a goofball post he posted. Who are we? The goofballs or are we the cool young show? I'm trying these game pods now. Why are you dancing around on social media? I agree. I agree. I sound like an old man, but I agree. He's not saying you have to do it. But again, it's for the greater good
Starting point is 00:34:32 of winning and creating a camaraderie in an image for a team. Can I say this respectfully? Thankfully, I was Sam, the fact you disagree with me makes me know I'm right. Why? Because you are a stick in the mud. You're in anything goes type of guy. Anything goes. And that's stupid. You lose a little structure.
Starting point is 00:34:50 You need a little structure. I'm a nickel in my pocket. Anything goes. If it wasn't for me bringing you back all the time, this show would be off the rails and it would be a mess. That's why you work on a guy's trying to keep some sort of structure and semblance of, A, we're here to win. This is serious. Not everything's fun in games all the time. Guess what it is?
Starting point is 00:35:07 You think it is. It's a game. Yeah, but dude, this is football. This is football. Your life's on the line. You're worrying about your dance moves? There's football. Your life's on the line.
Starting point is 00:35:17 You could get her playing football. Like they say, you don't play boxing, dude. Football, you could play football, but it's tough. And you're here worrying about your two-step? This is more of a... What is this thing called again? Two-step? People still floss.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Can you listen to Sam? Sam. By the problem. Why is this a life or death situation? I'm confused. Because why is dancing such a priority when you should be worried about touchdowns? Sam, you are proving every point. You're a guy in your 30s and you're like, what's that dance?
Starting point is 00:35:47 The floss? Like, you are a 75-year-old man trapped in a 35-year-old man's body. I'm fine with that. What the hell is wrong with you? Listen. It is Flossin, right? I got that right. Oh, this is Flosson, huh?
Starting point is 00:35:57 And then this is Flosson. The old Charleston, am I right? Hey, I was Sam. Made in Carolina. I was Sam during the commercial. I want everyone to go to at Covino and Rich because we're on Instagram unlike I Was Sam who's an old guy
Starting point is 00:36:11 I'm going to post a video of Iowa Sam flossing No no I'm done with that You just want something as popular as when I was doing the court jester yo-yo routine You really feel the need to dance on TikTok My point is in a world of NIL and expression And college kids
Starting point is 00:36:31 There's not other ways to express yourself Right can't you do it when you're not at practice or at the facility? Do it at home. No, I don't think he wants to see any of his players. Then do it in the offseason. Yeah, he has an off season. Yeah, I'm down with that.
Starting point is 00:36:42 In season, don't do it at home. Don't do it in the facility. It's like gambling on your own team. Just don't do it. And I'm sure there's plenty of ways where you could express yourself and put your personality out there. And he's obviously bringing us up because it's probably an issue. People are doing it in the locker room when they should be focusing on something else.
Starting point is 00:37:00 I don't know. I feel like when, first of all, when did, what are we living in the world of footloose? Like you said, what is it? No dancing in this town? What are we with Kevin Bacon? Like, what is going on here? But I'm just saying it's wild to me that,
Starting point is 00:37:13 hey, did you ever have the need to dance when you were playing baseball growing up? No, but you know who does? This younger generation who all think they're the Jabberwockies. Well, they're not. And they're on a football team. And if you're in 18, 20. You know when you dance when you score a touchdown? When you're an 18, 19, 20 year old kid.
Starting point is 00:37:29 Yeah, look at the NFL. Every interception, every touchdown, every first down. Everything's a celebration. So my point is you're dealing with 18, 19, 20-year-old kids. I would want them loose, but I'd also want them focused. And I don't think dancing and having fun with their teammates is a disruption. In fact, I think anything, those type of things create camaraderie. You're making it seem like they don't.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Maybe this guy's trying to create a culture, right? Like you're trying to be the badass team, West Virginia. Look, West Virginia, man, we're not playing games. We're here to kick some ass. This is football, dude. This isn't baby games, right? It's football. So he's trying to create an image, like the, like the,
Starting point is 00:38:04 Like the Raiders have an image. Raiders are badass. Oh, it's image. And then you got these guys doing pirouettes on TikTok. How does that go with the image he's trying to create? Didn't a little extra curricular noise he's trying to get rid of? Didn't NFL players used to do ballet? Lin-Swan did, yes.
Starting point is 00:38:20 Is that not a lot of hot yoga and all that. There's a lot of boxers that do ballet. Keep moving. It's to help with his footwork. Gotta keep moving. Yeah. Lomachenko did that in the ring. Look, I'm not saying there's not benefits to dance. I'm just saying if he's trying to create a.
Starting point is 00:38:34 image and he's trying to just create some sort of structure. He's the coach. Let the coach coach coach. That's why you hired him. I'm just saying it seems like we just got done talking a month ago about how, well, thank God the Yankees finally got rid of this stupid facial hair policy. And now we're talking about a coach telling kids that are 18, 19 years old not to do a, I don't know, a Kendrick Lamar strut on Instagram or TikTok.
Starting point is 00:38:56 If your priorities dancing, join the dance team. That's what I would say. I don't see how this isn't about focus. Be a cheerleader. It's about focus. And that's what the coach wants. Yeah. Wants him to be focused.
Starting point is 00:39:06 Focus on the place. You're making it. You know what I would say? Anytime someone misstepped, ran a wrong route, I'm like, weren't you the guy doing choreography before? Were you going to have flossinging? Yeah. Not already have flossing?
Starting point is 00:39:19 Dabbin and flossin? Maybe if you spent less time flossinging, you would have got that route right. What are you doing? The soldier boy? I feel like you're so in my face. No, because Rich's, Rich's coast through, I say this respectfully. But Rich just coast through everything. with like, you know, so willy-nilly.
Starting point is 00:39:36 I think no form of structure, anything goes attitude, because he brings the fun. But, dude, this is football. This is what's great about you, too, though. Like, Rich is kind of leaning into it, and you're, like, pulling him back, but you find this consensus kind of in the middle, which is the great thing about this show.
Starting point is 00:39:50 And that's what the coach is doing. Thanks, Sam. He's the coach. Let him coach. Rich Rodriguez saying, no, no dancing. Are these players so committed to dancing? Oh, my life. If that's the case, then go and dance.
Starting point is 00:40:00 But we're here for football. Do with the old stanky leg? What's going on? Come on. Doing the great mind. See? Hey, Monty. What do you got, buddy?
Starting point is 00:40:09 Hey, Monty. A lot of college hoops, guys. So I've got a lot of numbers running through my head. I'll try to keep this as easy as possible. We've got two games still going on right now with 11 minutes to go. Six-seat Ole Miss has a 59 to 45 lead. Over 11-seed North Carolina at halftime. Bore seed Maryland beating 13-seat Grand Canyon, 42 to 28.
Starting point is 00:40:32 One-seat Duke blew out. 16 seed Mount St. Mary's 93 to 49. Cooper flag played had 14 points in the win. Two-seat Alabama survived 90 to 81 against 15-seed Robert Morris from Mark Sears had a double-double in the win. Seven-seed, this one just ended. Seven-seat, who was the seven-seat St. Mary's? St. Marys? Just edged. I think I picked St. Mary's.
Starting point is 00:40:54 I know. I got confused. I was like this one just ended. They just beat 10-seed Vanderbilt 59 to 56. 12-seed Colorado State, top five-seat Memphis, 78 to 70. Three-seat Iowa State crushed 14-seed Lipscomb, 82 to 55, and 9-seed Baylor, held on to be 8-seat Mississippi State 45 to 39. Those are all the games that have happened on day two, round one of the men's tournament. The ladies are also playing today, but it's day one.
Starting point is 00:41:18 I'm not going to give you all those scores. There's been no major upsets, but I will tell you that 3-C Notre Dame scored 106 points today. I know. Y'amontzi, let me ask you. Jess. Did you hear my fun fact stats yesterday that you have a significantly better chance of getting struck by lightning being in a plane crash, getting struck by a meteor,
Starting point is 00:41:38 being eaten alive by a shark or winning the power ball, then having a perfect bracket. All it wants? Oh, yeah. It's one in 9.2 quintillion, and that'll be my fun fact for the week, but all those things are just so significantly
Starting point is 00:41:52 easier to do, so. Steve Hartman posted that he had all day one matchups correct. He got him all right on day one. He went 16 and 0, which is impressive. to do. He's never done that, but he tweeted about it. Quick here in the NFL, Aaron Rogers met with the Steelers today. Brandon Cook signed a two-year deal with the Saints. Back to you guys. Thanks, Moncie. Starting point is 00:43:05 We tire buying should be. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:43:17 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we,
Starting point is 00:43:33 should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. We're Covino and Rich. Hope you having a great Friday. We're pumped for the weekend. In fact, we'll get you ready for the weekend
Starting point is 00:47:35 when we do weekend hobnobbing at the end of the show. And next hour, a brand new game. So if you want to win a prize, it's multiple choices, easy. Apparently, me and Belichick are the same guy. I put this together. I don't know if I was hired, drunk, but I was on vacation. Probably both. And I, because I'm the crazy guy on the show. Maybe you had dance fever yourself. I was dancing in Mexico. after a good edible or something. And I said, oh my God, my best pal Kavino
Starting point is 00:48:01 and Bill Belichick are the same guy. They're both grumpy and date younger women named Jordan. So we're going to play a fun game called Is it Steve Kavino or Bill Belichick? Prizes. Can't wait. But let's wrap up the story. West Virginia head coach, Rich Rodriguez,
Starting point is 00:48:17 bands TikTok dancing, telling reporters he wants his mountaineers to have a hard edge. That sounds fair. A hard edge. If your last name is Rodriguez and your first name is Rich, Why would he not go by Ricardo Rodriguez? What a fail, first of all. Why don't you go by Ricardo?
Starting point is 00:48:34 Maybe I should. Ricardo Davis. Give me a little edge. Now, he's banned his players from doing TikTok moves because it doesn't go with the image he wants for his football team again. A hard edge. Isn't that what you want for your team? But it's a team of like, it's a game of battle.
Starting point is 00:48:56 All right. We're keeping it so not real. Is it a dance battle? We're keeping it so not real in this conversation. No, you're not. You're not. All right. The biggest bad is NFL players.
Starting point is 00:49:07 All they're doing is dancing. All these young black dudes. Scoring. By the way, Justin Jefferson doing it is gritty and everything. They're elite professional athletes. Steve, we're in those rights. They're the best of the best of the best. And?
Starting point is 00:49:20 And? Are these guys the best of the best? Or is he trying to create something here? I thought you had more because there's a point. And clearly, and was it needed? Clearly, to Kavino, you need to earn dance moves. No, these guys are professionals. They're men.
Starting point is 00:49:34 These are not grown men. These are young men that need coaching, need guidance, need to know that dancing is not the priority. If they want to get to the NFL, maybe they should focus more on football. It's pretty simple. Yeah, I just, I don't. Dancing is your passion and join a class. Let me use a big boy term. None of these things are mutually exclusive.
Starting point is 00:49:54 It's not like because I dance, I stink at football. And because I don't dance, my game is stronger. I get what you're saying. Discipline is a thing. Again, number one coach on Fox Sports Radio. When I'm at there with the T-ball kids, some of them don't listen. They put their hat on backwards. And I say, hey, kids, get over here.
Starting point is 00:50:12 Take a knee. Put your hat on the right way and listen to coach. I get it. People need discipline. They're not pros. And he wants to have a hard edge. But culturally, to create a loose fun, we want to play together, camaraderie atmosphere.
Starting point is 00:50:23 We always talk about how important the clubhouse is, how important the locker room is, those team dinners or the veterans, you know, bust the chops of the rookies a little bit. That team building is so important. So when you're like, hey man, I'm the old coach. There'll be no TikTok dancing. Say that to a bunch of college kids, and I feel like you lose the room. Then I guess you don't want to play football that bad. That's how I see it.
Starting point is 00:50:46 If you're worried about your dance moves, you're not worried about football. You said that about Yankees and beards. If you want to be on the pinstripes and rock the pinstrips and who can you? kids are a facial hair. Why'd they change it? Because they realized it was lame. But dancing is so needed necessary when it comes to football. I think I know why this is, this is why you have this feeling. I want to know why you're the defender of dance all of a sudden. Because I think I know why. Steve Kavino, not a great dancer. Are you? Twinkle toes? You, you, you're the dancing machine here? Kavino at a wedding, the conga line starts, he goes to the bathroom. Starting point is 00:51:51 This is football you're trying to create it in hard edge. Rich, the greatest dancer. Let's bring your minute for the halftime show. If you're so concerned about dancing, why don't you dance with J-Lo in halftime? Hey, you know what? At Covino and Rich during the break. I was Sam flossing on our social media. Hey, guys, it's us.
