You know, it used to be you could ask questions and you weren't viewed as a hater. You could ask questions about a team like. Like, I know they're good, but what about this or what about that? And we spent the last couple of weeks you and I asking questions. Jimmy Johnson asked the same questions.

What happens when you face the Eagles the second time? What happens if they trail? They haven't trailed in the second half, right? Yeah. What happens if they lose their great defensive tackle the kid out of Georgia, Jordan Davis? They have missed him badly with the run game. Yeah. So that's what we do.

Sometimes we poke and we prod. I've said this. years, the media is like the IRS were built to audit. Not be your friends. So when Jimmy Johnson asked a real question, like, when you face them a second time, a very unique offense, the element of surprise and uniqueness is gone. What will Philadelphia be like? Well, Washington, I compared him to the Ravens with Lamar Jackson.

Not saying they're not good, but when you face Lamar the second time, Remember the Chargers that first year, faced him a second time. They beat him. Eleanor surprise is gone. Well, Washington faced Philadelphia for the second time and dominated him. Twice the plays, twice the rushing yards, twice the time of possession, twice the total yards dominated them. Better team all night.

We also asked the question, what will Jalen Hertz be like as a young quarterback trailing? I mean, Baker Mayfield with a lead in a run game, looked like a pro bowler. What will Jalen Hertz be trailing in a game? Because that's playoff football. You're the favorite. The pressure's on. You're at home. A couple bad series.

You fall behind. The games are close. The other team's going to run game. You're not getting on the field as much as usual. You're turning the ball over. They're not. The Eagles have lived on turnovers all year. Last night, they turned it over.

They trailed. Washington had the better run game. The pressure was on Philadelphia. That's a playoff environment. That's what playoff games are like for any team that goes in as a one seed. Yeah, you'll be at home off a buy, but that team playing you, may have seen you before, you may trail, you may not have the run game, you may turn it over. And what do we see from filling in the second half?

A touchdown, a couple of punts, couple of fumbles. That's what it looked like. Now, again, it's not hating on a team to suggest that a unique quarterback with a unique offense, would dominate the regular season, but if you force him to play behind like the Ravens early, and the Ravens have, by the way, mostly figured it out. Lamar and the Ravens offense, much better playing from behind than two years ago.

But these are all questions that had to be asked. Last night does not change the way I think of Philadelphia. I think they're a really good team with a lot of really good players. But the turnover stuff we talked about, they weren't going to dominate turnovers for every game this year. and last night when they didn't, they got housed at home. And they're still an evolving team. But the reality of the NFC hasn't changed.

I mean, San Francisco's 5 and 4 and is never healthy. Tampa's 5 and 5 and can't run the football consistently. Seattle's got Gino Smith. The Vikings are 8 and 1, but Kirk Cousins can shrink in big games. New York Giants are 7 and 2, but feel like they're pretty much dominated by Sequin Barclay. Dallas just got exposed. The Packers are under 500. So nothing has changed.

I don't think less of Philadelphia. I just have more information on Philadelphia today. And when they trail and the pressure's on them and the other team is running the ball and the other team dominates time of possession and Jalen Hertz feels like he's watching the game as much as he's playing it or more, that's what they look like. That's a playoff game because the pressure is going to be on. If they played again, it's on Philadelphia, not Washington. It's not going to be on Taylor Heineke.

Not going to be on Ron Rivera. It's going to be on Nick Seriani, the young guy that got the job in his second playoff run. You've got to win games now. So I think Philadelphia is still really, really good. I think they'll be the number one seed. Nothing really changes. We just have more information.

They're more fallible. They're more human. They're like everybody else in the league. You execute or you lose. You don't turn it over, even at home. or you lose. Here's Jalen Hertz after. It's the same message that's always been delivered after our wins.

Same message delivered after our losses. You know, controlling the things that we can come out here today. We didn't do that. We didn't do it. And today it got us. So, you know, it's very important to control the things that you can, controlling your ball security, knowing where the operation of the players supposed to go and just execution.

Those are all things that we can control, and we have to do a better job of that. They'll be fine, and they'll remain, I believe, the number one seed in about seven, eight more weeks. All right, let's talk about a coaching job. I said yesterday, I'm not a fan of it, but I said I think Denver has to make a coaching change. It's not getting better off a by week. But in the same show yesterday, I said, let's take a deep breath on the Raiders. I would much rather have the Raiders current situation than Denver's situation. I feel Denver's dire, trapped, and there's no way out.

I think the Raiders are fine. And so Mark Davis came out yesterday, the owner of the Raiders. And he said, listen, people in today's world want instant gratification. The guys coached nine games. We're two and seven, not the results we're looking for. Same time we've lost six one score games. I give my vote of confidence. When I signed him, that's what I gave it to him.

Rome was not built in the day. So I defended the Raiders yesterday, and I want you to think about this. coaching, believe it or not, is much harder than Twitter makes it sound. So here's what happened with this team in the 12 months before the guy over my shoulder, head coach Josh McDaniels, got the job. John Gruden was fired. He was going to be there forever, right? Fired.

Chaos. Their first round pick, Henry Ruggs, a receiver, killed a Las Vegas civilian off the team, jail. They cut another first round. pick in 2020, DeMarnette threats, internet, violence, Instagram, out. Two first round picks. Buy, buy. GM, Mike Mayock fired. Okay.

All the while, Denver, we thought was getting better. The Chargers were adding pieces. Kansas City, in division, adding pieces. So Josh McDaniels comes in and he takes a big swing. I'm going to get a wide receiver, Devante Adams. They bring him in. But in the process, they give up a first and a second round pick in the draft. So they have had so many whiffs, the previous group of people have had so many whiffs in the draft,

or they've had to get rid of people in the draft that you have a very thin team with most of the talent on offense. I mean, in fact, look at the draft. Their last one, two, three, six first round picks. Cut, cut, cut, cut, and then Josh Jacobs and Farrell, the defensive end, he's kind of a bust. There you go. And so they take a big swing. They bring in a receiver, give up two more first round picks and first to second round pick. And they got some talent on offense, but not on defense.

And then what happens? The offense has the injury bug. And Hunter Renfro is hurt. And Darren Waller is hurt. And the talent, which is completely lobsided on the offensive sides got most of it, two of their biggest stars get hurt. Okay. And then you look at the two and seven and say they're terrible.

Okay. They're 0 and 6 in one possession games. Who was the team in the NFL last year that was terrible in close games? Minnesota. 8 and 1 this year. Offensive coach winning close games. The difference is there wasn't massive chaos with the Vikings. They just replaced a coach. Look at the chaos Josh McDaniels had to overcome.

They're just losing close. games. They're in it. All their talent because of so many whiffs by the previous guys on their top picks, their talents mostly on offense. And two of their three biggest stars got hurt. What are you going to do? I mean, think about this. The Raiders point differential. They're in games as minus 23. That's better than the chargers in their own division that have a winning record. That's better than the Packers. Tennessee is right now six and three. They have a negative point differential. So Tennessee, winning all the close games, Minnesota winning all the close games,

Raiders losing them all. And they probably should lose them all because they're not very good defensively. And Darren Waller's great, can't play. Hunter Renfro's amazing. I are. This stuff is really, really hard. It's way harder than social media would lead you to belief. Most jobs are.

But I think Denver needs to make a move. I'll defend the Raiders again. I would take the Raiders job tomorrow. I've had two former head coaches tell me that Raider thing's interesting. You could keep Derek Carr, you could move them and get a bunch of picks. There's no cap hit. They got stars on offense. They got pass rushers.

Like, it's not a bad job. And I don't think it's a terrible team. Oh and six and one possession games. I think the Raiders win about half of the remaining games, believe it or not, They'll be viable, but this stuff is hard. And I think Mark Davis is being honest. Wasn't built in the day. We're kind of a mess.

This was never going to be a one and done job. This was never going to be the Vikings turnaround. All right. So there was a couple of things in last night's game. So it was interesting. I went to just let you know how America has changed. So I went to a place, a little club I go to occasionally with some buddies, had a couple beers and watched the game.

and it is fascinating in America. In California, you can't legally sports bet, right? But I'm sitting at a table and three guys have like global gaming gambling things. They're betting at halftime. They're live betting. The conversation at bars around America is so much people often say you and JMAQ talk odds and lines all the time. That's what's happening in America.

Boy, did I feel it last night. Everybody on their phone, everybody live betting, everybody betting at half. in a state where you have to use apps and devices and websites from out of the state. California won't let it in. So imagine being in a state where they do. It's the new world we live in with football. A lot of stuff today. I thought Kevin Durant had an interesting comment earlier today about the best players of all

time. Thoughts on that. You ever get in a convertible during the summer? Flying around country roads? Got to look at the beach. I love a convertible. Then fall and winter happens and it rains. And then spring happens and it rains. The convertible is not as cool. Get back inside a car.

Everybody's freaking out over Taylor Heineke. First of all, we get it. You hate Carson Wentz. And the Taylor Heineke story, plucky, small guy feels great. He had a 66 passer rating last night. Every quarterback in this league with a dominant run game, playing with a lead looks great. Baker did.

Gino Smith has been great all year. Do you see what happened Sunday? They couldn't run the ball, and he trailed. And Gino Smith looked like Gino Smith. Washington had 49 rushes last night and 40 minutes time of possession. Taylor Heineke was asked to make a couple of big throws, and he hit one big throw, Terry McClure, who is just so good all the time. But the biggest play for Taylor Heineke was baiting on a Philadelphia Eagle to get a roughing

passer. And he is a crafty player because he has to be a crafty player. This is a crafty play from a crafty player, right? That's what he does. Because he doesn't have the size. A ball was hiked over his head. Would have helped if he was taller. He got rocked early by a bigger defensive lineman and fumbled.

He's a crafty guy and a crafty player and deserves credit. But the Washington defense forced four turnovers. What quarterback that gets four turnovers, a 40 minutes time of possession, a dominant run game, who doesn't win? Colt McCoy wins with that. There's a lot of guys, small sample size, Kyle Allen was great.

And then after a few wins, they were like, hey, Kyle, we're trailing late. Go. That's what changes Mahomes. The score is irrelevant with Mahomes. Doesn't matter if there's five minutes left or 13 seconds. Leading or trailing. Same with Burrow. Josh Allen feels like that.

Heck, Kirk Cousins this weekend trailing. So small sample size, it's one of those things last night. consider last night like one of those things you did in high school or college a group project four turnovers 40 yards time of possession Terry McClure and a great catch it's like a group project and Taylor Heineke's really well liked and he gets an A on the group project but he didn't lead it I get it you don't like wince and you like the Taylor Heineke story everybody loves the vice president everybody loves the backup quarterback everybody loves the substitute teacher. You can't build around that stuff.

J-Mack with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. You just have to take a jab at Taylor Heineke. Is that a way you're defending Carson Wentz? Because he's not getting his job back. They love Taylor Heineke in Washington, Colin. Hey, by the way, fun number for you.

Taylor Heineke, nine and three against the spread in his last 12 starts. The guy gets the job done and they like him. Okay. Nobody's saying he's a starter. But you mentioned the ball, what goes over his head. You know what's even more important on that play. He had the wherewithal to quickly pick it up, get outside the tackle box, and throw it away. They lost no yardage. That's a smart, heady player. Listen, I've done my homework on Taylor Heineke.

He's crafty. This guy was an awesome high school football player in Georgia. Like state player of the year. Go to ODU. What does he do at ODU? You don't even know. Virginia. Old Dominion. Yeah, Old Dominion. Yeah, Old Dominion. Ten and three, 11 and two every year. Oh, a old dominion. This guy is loved by Washington. They're giving him the treatment on social media for the plane ride home last night. They got the chains around him. He's doing his cool thing. They have the worst owner.

It's the most chaotic organization. So they're dying for somebody to wrap their arms around. And Taylor Heineke is a wonderful story. But he was asked to make about two throws last night. One to the perpetually underrated Terry McCluret, who's good every time you watch him play. This was a group project, but it was the defense of Philadelphia. the O-line of Philadelphia of Washington.

Washington won that game and controlled it, both sides all night. He was part of the group project. He gets an A2. Let's take a deep breath. The weird thing, the dynamic of the backup quarterback being so popular. I'll tell you who's not popular. Carson Wentz. He has not popular.

He's never been popular at any of his stops because he walks in. Oh, yeah, man, I was the number one pick. I'm Carson Wentz. Never been loved in any locker room. He's been in, Colin. You can look that up. They like Carson Wentz in Washington. All right, moving on. Let's get started with a little feud here. Jeff Saturday, the new Colts coach, right? He gets the win over the Raiders. A lot of controversy behind the hire. And, you know, Hall of Famer Bill Cowher, he ripped Saturday. Are you ready for this? Yes.

For an owner to hire a coach who has never been an assistant at the college or pro level and overseeing a lot of qualified candidates to build a resume, it's a disgrace to the coaching profession. In regards to how this played out, what happened in Indianapolis, is a travesty. Well, that's a little over the top. Yeah, just a little. Go ahead. I know you want to go in on Cal. Well, first of all, I know Jeff very well. He's a great guy. And I think a lot of times, again, small sample size, a lot of things look great. Do I think this will play out to a playoff for the Colts? No. Do I think it feels a little strange and odd? Yes.

Do I think they have an incredibly impulsive owner who wanted Wednesday? out of town who wanted Frank Reich fired. It's a very impulsive franchise currently, and the billionaire has every right to do that. I think the only disappointing thing to me is the coaches went over the top. Rex Ryan, Bill Coward, it's not a travesty. It is an impulsive owner who's been doing things like this since Andrew Luck retired early. He's taken big swings. He's meddled too much. This feels a little strange. I'm happy for Jeff. It never rose to a travesty. Jeff is smart, capable, knows the game. By the way, like catchers in baseball, some of the smartest players in league history are centers because you call the audibles. So Jeff is high functioning. Don't,

let's not marginalize Jeff. It's just some country bumpkin. Saturday is really bright, knows football, managed Peyton Manning, who's a lot of work for years. Jeff is sharp as a Don't kid yourself. He's one of my favorite guys ever at ESPN. The coaches I thought went over the top. They're protecting their profession. Yes. Listen, it's an impulsive owner. Impulsive owners in this league have done crazier things than naming Jeff Saturday and interim coach. Yeah. Protecting the profession, I think you're on to something with that. Like calling this a travesty? Come on. Why? Because they pulled a guy off the street who just beat the Raiders and the mighty Josh McDaniels. Naming me interim. That's a travesty. Naming Jeff Saturday interim coach, that's unique.

But it's not a travesty. Okay. All right. Let's move on to O'Dell Beckham, Jr. He expects to have a decision and a deal by the end of the month, according to Adam Schifter. The team's in the mix. Dallas Cowboys, the Buffalo Bills, although I would write them off because Odell said he does not want cold weather. Kansas City Chiefs.

Oh, good Lord. More weapons? New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. Colin, you want to guess a best fit or where you think this ends up? I think Dallas once again, as we watched Dallas this week on a big fourth down, Dallas has struggled all season on third and fourth downs. Why? The O-line's not as good.

Zeke is kind of washed. They need more juice. Dallas is the spot here. No state tax, big brand. They need another guy. By the way, Michael Gallup, I don't know his health, but he limped in that Packer game. He came up a little limpy, gimpy on one play. Dallas is the easy one here.

And they need him. This is not just for brand. Dallas, if you watch how bad they've been as a franchise this year on crucial downs, why? They need more, because people can roll stuff over on CD Lamb and you take him out of a game. So I think Dallas, and I do think it would make Dallas just a little, a little more energized. Interesting. I'm going to go with the Niners. You look at his decision last year.

Smart coach. You go to McVeigh. If Odell looks at the coaches and says, hmm, Or am I going to get the Rock? McCarthy or Shanahan? What's your best guess there? Who's got a better chance of the Super Bowl? Yeah, but they have Jennings, Ayuk, Kittle? They're not getting the ball to Kittl enough anyway. Jennings? Come on.

I mean, Debo. George Kittle had one catch for 21 yards on two targets, and he doesn't care. He just wants to win. Here's my thing. So Elijah Mitchell got some carries this week, and it felt like McCaffrey didn't get the ball. Debo didn't. At some point, I mean, they've got enough. McCaffrey, Elijah, Kiddle, Debo, Iuke, Jennings, like, that's enough.

What happened to work smarter, not harder? He's going to have to go bust his hump in Dallas coming off the ACL. Sanfran, you just walk out, they maybe put you off for 25 plays and you win a bunch of games. Warm weather, West Coast, where he's got the... By the way, family?

Did not OBJ take payment in Bitcoin? Think about this. That's a fair point. Okay, you think it's a... You think it's just random that he filed a lawsuit against Nike to get some money?

I didn't see that. He took a lot of his money from the Rams in Bitcoin. Lost it all. Now he's got a lawsuit with Nike. Texas no state tax. OBJ, he's not going to play very long. He wants that. I think, I think...

Chase it's a paper? Well, I'm not knocking him for it. I'm saying a lot of people move to Florida and chase paper. Moved to Nevada and Chase paper. That's all. I'm not knocking people for it. I live in California, so I lose paper. A lot of you guys chase paper.

But the point being is he lost a lot of money on Bitcoin, A lot of players did, and he's probably, all of a sudden I saw yesterday, he's filing a lawsuit. It's something. You're like a journalist, right? What does Clark call you, Big J? Journalist? Digging deep. I didn't see that story. Soft J.

Soft J. All right, we'll wrap up. Good little NBA fodder. LeBron James missed Sunday's matchup against Kevin Durant and the nets. He's dealing with the abductor strain. I don't know about that fit for LeBron. A decent look. At any rate, Kevin Durant.

Big praise for LeBron, even though he did not play. Here's KD on The Goat, LeBron James. Top two player to ever play, top three player that ever play the game. So there's always going to be excitement when he steps on the floor. And we've been around for so long that people seeing so many battles between us too at the highest stage, you know, that people look forward to us. So I guess it's cool that we're still relevant at the older age and people want to come watch us play. I was thinking about this.

You know how everybody always makes lists? No. Nobody makes lists on the internet. Top 10 lists. I was thinking about this when I heard this this morning. If there was just the four best players I've ever seen play, I have to have seen them play. In basketball or all sports? Basketball.

The four best basketball players in my entire life I've seen play. And I have to see them in their prime. I don't get old will. You can't go. Bill Russell's not in the mix. No, no. I saw old will. Four best basketball players.

Kareem, Michael, LeBron, and Magic. And then I think there's about 20 guys in the Barkley, Duncan, Bird, Akeem, staff, Shaq. But the four, and I have to have seen their prime. People don't understand how good Kareem was. 20 years and great for about 18 of them. Dominant defender. The most unstoppable shot in league history. The skyhook, yeah.

My dad's favorite player of all time. So Kareem, Michael, LeBron. Magic are the four best players I've ever seen. And most of them, not all of them. Kareem had the greatest shot. Michael was probably the greatest offensive player. LeBron's the Swiss Army knife.

And Magic elevated every single player. Magic could do anything you needed on any given night and probably is the great distributor of my lifetime. I only caught the tail end of Jabbar's career. Like, you know, he was like 38 years old. And he was still very good. So I'd replace him on that list with Curry. I think Curry is right there with.

Curry would be the near the next 20 for me. Duncan, Curry, Bird, Kobe. Yeah, Bird was awesome, obviously. But I think Curry would he's done in his prime. And we've seen his prime up close here the last decade. Yeah. I mean, we saw Kobe, who was excellent. Shaq was totally dominant.

But for me, Steph Curry, man. There's something about that dude. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. So everybody saw the situation. if you watch the Cowboy Packer game where Aaron kind of shouts down his coach Matt LaFleur.

I defended Aaron Rogers. I defended Peyton Manning yelling at Jeff Saturday. I've defended Brady yelling at Josh McDaniels. I'm always going to defend a quarterback or a coach barking in the middle of a game. This stuff's hard. It's intense. The game is live. Aaron has a right to bark.

I would much rather see Aaron Rogers do this than be passive aggressive. So Aaron after the game was kind of asked about that situation. I felt like we were like 30 yards from end of the game in regulation. And also felt like it was two minutes. So I was going to be calling those. And I was in a pretty good rhythm. Obviously, I didn't have a ton of attempts tonight. But it felt like I was in a pretty good rhythm.

I felt like I threw the ball just about exactly where I wanted to tonight. And so I wanted a chance to go win the game. So I agree with him. I mean, you're paying it 50 large. Let Aaron have the call. But am I being unfair if I say this? Lefleur and Aaron have been together three and a half years. And I've always felt the power dynamics a little off.

So Aaron was a superstar when 39-year-old Matt LaFluer got the job. Aaron had $100 million net worth, commercials everywhere, a ring, a reputation. And he had a way of doing things. Aaron was moving into, I'm going to do things my way. That's why McCarthy's no longer the coach. So that was all established. And here comes 39-year-old Matt LaFleur, who, by the way, since he left, Tennessee has gotten better. Not a shot, just a reality.

So I've always felt this organization that Matt entered also had something else going on. Is that Aaron and the front office of Green Bay have not been at odds, sometimes maybe, but it's always been a little tense. Aaron firing shots at the front office, the day of the draft, the organization, Jordan, love. So Matt comes in no proven head coaching experience or tenure to an established star who got rid of the other coach because there's certain things he wants to do his way, not ripping Aaron, defending him, he's the star of the show. There is no owner in Green Bay. Farr, Rogers, are the franchise. And I've always felt like it's a weird relationship in this running or passing situation illustrates it.

So when Matt LaFleur came to Green Bay, his reputation was he builds running games. And so he comes into this organization and he knows I'm going to lean on what I do, build running games. But I've got to do this delicately because Aaron's like, great and I don't want him to think I don't trust him or don't consider his talent elite. So it's kind of a delicate balance. and just about the time they get it right, the Packers draft Jordan love and piss Aaron off.

So now LaFleur's got to deal with a little more prickly Aaron. But again, what he is, is a guy that builds running games. Aaron is aging. He's probably not the guy you want throwing 50 times like Brady's had to do most of this year. Let's get him down to 32 throws. Let's run the football. but it's a delicate balance. Aaron's still playing great.

He's ticked off about Jordan Love. There's still some palpable tension with the front office. And I've seen this in playoff games. The times that Matt Lefleur has disappointed me this year early, give the ball more to Aaron Jones. But Matt Lefleur is thinking, well, my star quarterback doesn't trust these young receivers. So I'm going to run it more, but I've got to develop that. relationship and Aaron can be a little aloof with young players.

So my point is, the whole thing for Lefleur, the power dynamics been hard. He enters an organization where Aaron's got a little tension with the front office. He solves it. And then it feels like just about the time he's got it right, they draft Jordan Love and now it's prickly again. And this year, it's just felt like play calling. Aaron understands he wants the running game. This team is clearly better with a running game.

But in this instance, Aaron wanted to pass because Watson was playing well. This thing, I've always felt it's off. And I think it's been really hard for Matt LaFleur. If you joined a company and you had to sort of manage a superstar knowing that management had poked him in the ribs a couple of times and the superstar had poked management in the ribs a couple times, this whole argument. arguing over play calling. This was Matt Lafleur doing what Matt LaFleur does.

Running the ball. What he was brought to Green Bay to do. Take a little off Aaron's plate. Establish a running game. Right? What was the criticism of Matt LaFleur early this year? They weren't running the ball enough. So I'm not banging on Aaron here, but it does feel like this thing is harder to manage

than we think. The prickly star, the running game developed. the drafting of Jordan Love, the tension in the front office. It's a hard walk here. It's not, this was not like Kyle Shanahan coming in and bulldozing it and saying, here's my offense. Here's what we're doing. You're going to follow my playbook.

That's not what this is. And then blow it up. This was a winning franchise. This was a great franchise with a superstar quarterback. And I think it just, it felt like three of the Packers four wins this year, they've rushed for over 203 yards. They're better running the football. So Matt's leaning in to run of the football, and he was brought here to run the football, and he likes running the football, and Aaron's yelling him for running the football.

Monday morning quarterback now joining us live here on a Tuesday, Albert Breer. A lot of different things do. I want to start with a team that's not fascinating, but the Jeff Saturday situation. I was kind of shocked by all the pushback by the Rex Ryan's and the Bill Cowers and the Joe Thomas's.

I didn't think it was a tragedy. I thought it was a unique, but I think Ursa is a completely impulsive unique owner, and owners do crazy stuff. You know, I mean, I've seen Dan Snyder tell his GM draft that quarterback. So I think when you have billionaire owners that are impulsive and Andrew Luck retires and they've been kind of like bailing water since, what was, when you talk to people around the league, you just did a NFL general manager poll. I mean, you deal with these guys. I mean, how is the Jeff Saturday move viewed by execs in the league? With a lot of skepticism.

I mean, no question about it. That's a big part of it. You know, I look, like, I think this is something that Jim Mersey did give a good amount of thought to. He's very close with Jeff Saturday. I had a couple people tell me he's enamored of Jeff Saturday. He was around a lot during training camp in his role as an advisor. You know, definitely I think that that skepticism existed in league circles. I also, Colin, like just from my own standpoint, think there's some job protectionism going on here.

There are only 32 of these jobs. And you can remember 10 years ago when there were so many people rooting for Chip Kelly. to fail, right? And people still talk about him like he was this huge failure and he wasn't. He won 10 games two years in a row. A lot of his ideas are still in the NFL, right? And why is that? Well, I think a big part of it was when there are only 32 jobs available, you don't want new doors opening, right? Like if you're inside that club. And so if Chip Kelly had been some roaring success, well, then what would NFL owners have done? They would have looked to the college ranks for guys who have different ideas and brought them in to be their head coaches.

And I think the same sort of thing exists here. We've seen these sorts of hires work in baseball and basketball. I think we've all been under the impression that it can't work in football. You can't just come out of a television booth or out of your house and coach a team just because you played in the league for a lot of years. But it seems to me like playing the league helps. Kevin O'Connell's had a lot of success. He played in the league, right?

He's eight and one in his first nine games as an NFL head coach. Mike Vrable was only an NFL assistant for four years before he got a head coaching job. Now he looks like one of the top five or six coaches in the entire league. And so it looks to me like the experience of having played really helps. Is it possible that you could hire guys that don't have any assistant coaching experience, that experience having played in the league? I think it's possible. And I think it's good that we're getting to see whether or not it works with Jeff Saturday now.

And obviously other guys who spent 10, 20, 30 years in the league. the league don't want to see this happen for obvious reasons. So I just defended, I said the Lefleur-Aaron relationship has been hard for Matt. So he comes into an established rich superstar who likes to do things his way. And then they draft, the front office drafts Jordan loves. So he's got to deal with that. Aaron's prickly to begin with. There's palpable tension with the front office.

And he's not walking on eggshells, but he's, oh, and he's a run developer. So you're going to have to say, hey, Aaron, I want you to throw less. So I think this thing for LaFleur is always the power dynamics been hard for Matt. And did it boil over to national television maybe a little bit? I don't like to make too much of it. But I've always felt Matt is, I mean, we don't have an owner here. Farvin Rogers essentially become the de facto owner of the franchise.

They run it. They can get GMs and coaches fired. I think coach in the Packers with Aaron and Farr, I think it's a tougher job than people think. What did you see on TV that bothered you? Well, I mean, the first thing I saw was what Aaron said, which was interesting because you don't hear a quarterback say it a lot. It was run the bleeping ball, which, you know, like a lot of times quarterbacks want the

ball in their hands. In that case, I think Aaron thought the best thing to do was to run the ball in short yardage. So that's number one. Number two, I think Matt's ability to weather these storms is super underrated. And I think we've seen it over the course of his four years as the headcount. coach there. Number one, like his ability to play both sides of the, both sides of the dispute between the front office and Aaron Rogers and maintain relationships through that, I think is why Aaron Rogers is still on the Packers. Like if they didn't have Matt LaFleur there, I think that whole thing would have

blown up. And he was able to balance relationships with Brian Gutigunus and Mark Murphy. And they're on the other side of Aaron Rogers and help bring all of that together. The other thing is the flexibility. And this is a really interesting point that a lot of people don't know, We know what those Shanahan offenses are, right? Lots of movement, lots of motion. Aaron Rogers is like Peyton Manning. He doesn't want that in his offense because he wants to be able to look at the defense and spend the 30 seconds he has left in the play clock when they break the huddle trying to figure out what the defense is doing. So the floor's adjusted to him. And it's been more difficult this year because you don't have the one guy who can beat man coverage out

there in Devante Adams. So what have they done? They've invested time in trying to develop Christian Watson and Romeo Dobbs into those sorts of guys. And has it been frustrating, yes. But I think Matt LaFleur has got this incredible ability to keep the big picture in mind and understand what his organization needs of him. And I think it showed up again here where, look, like, it's been frustrating at times this year. But now you're starting to see the development of the rookie receivers come along. And maybe we see a different Packers team at the end of the year than we did at the beginning of the year as a result. All right. Minute left. Josh Allen, second halfs have been really bad.

Brian Daibol's gone. He's making more mistakes. Daniel Jones looks better. Listen, Matt Ryan was an MVP with Shanahan and was Matt Ryan after he left. Is Daibald have more influence in a minute here than maybe we gave him credit for? I think it's a factor. Yeah. And, you know, I think it's on Ken Dorsey to get Josh to rein it back in and play a little bit more of a conservative game,

especially with the injury now. That's definitely a factor. I think this is a very, this is a key point in the season, though. And I would give Josh a little more credit than maybe some people are, seeing the mistakes that he's made the last few weeks. This thing has come unraveled. The second half was sloppy against Green Bay. That spilled over into the last two games.

No question about it. They need to do better. But if you look at the last two years, there was the Hale Murray, right? And everybody was questioning, are the bills falling apart? They didn't lose again until the AFC championship game. Then last year, there was that crazy win game against New England. They fall behind it half by 24 points to the bucks. Come back in the second half, they don't lose another game until the AFC divisional round.

So this is a critical point for the bills, but I think we can give Sean McDermott and Josh Allen some credit here and say the last two years these have been turning points for them. I think that this needs to be that sort of turning point for them now. Yeah. Good stuff. Albert Breer, Monday morning quarterback as always. Thanks, Albert. All right. Thanks, Colin.

Yeah. Do you think last night, by the way, J. Mac, do you think less of Philadelphia for losing? Absolutely not. I'm the same way. I don't think less. They had unlucky turnovers. Turnover regression hit them. You're talking about a team that dominated the second quarter all season.

Highest point differential in the second quarter. They got outscored 13-0, like just a weird fluky. But the Jordan Davis injury, their defensive tackle, great runstopper. They've been basically run over the last two weeks. Houston and now Washington. Yeah. That's trouble. I don't think less of Philadelphia.

I just know more about Philadelphia. and I do think they feel very much that that big MVP year for Lamar Jackson when they were like 14 and 2, whereas the first time you face them, it's a lot. It's clever, it's unique. Then I think you face them a second time, the element of surprise is gone, and they're a good football team. But now they're also a good football team with some injuries. Key parts are getting banged up. But I think Philadelphia. Better shot at the wild card.

Washington or Green Bay? Washington's a game above Green Bay. Washington. And they beat him head to head. That's a good quote. Let me look that up. That's a good question. Yeah, that's a good question.
