Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:52 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black. people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, this will be the best show of the week. of stuff to talk about today. Live in Los Angeles, it's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, really good stuff today. Joy Taylor is joining me. Well, well, well, warriors appear to be in trouble. I have had quite a record picking winning teams, although I was a little off on, well, let's not get into it. I would say
Starting point is 00:02:56 the Warriors are in trouble this morning, not just because they lost the game. I take away from last night. Last night went how I expected it to go. I've got a bad vibe, Joy. This is why these series are so fun, riding the roller coaster of each of these games. That was a great watch last night, though. All right. So I'll tell you how it lands for me.
Starting point is 00:03:19 This is how I feel about it. This is trouble. So you look at the field goal percentage last night. The assists, the three-point percentage. A lot of times in the NBA now, one team shoots well, one team struggles, that decides the game. That's not what's happening here. They both shot about the same last night.
Starting point is 00:03:40 That's troubling. So why is that troubling? Because Jason Tatum is not playing well and doesn't have to play well. And they lead the series. If Steph Curry isn't brilliant for four quarters, the Warriors don't win. Two of the three games in the fourth quarter, Boston's getting huge, huge contributions from role players and non-starters, Derek White, Robert Williams, Marcus Smart.
Starting point is 00:04:08 It'd be one thing if Tatum took over the series and you just couldn't stop him. We've seen that with Michael Jordan or LeBron in a series or a Kevin Durant. That's not what it is. You've got role players for the Celtics, non-starters, or guys we look at as, you know, Robert Williams, who's just a defensive guy. They are contributing in a huge way. So the translation is right now Boston has more good players contributing more. They don't need their star to be great.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Just maybe Tatum in spurts. Four minute spurt here, five minute spurt there. Warriors are the opposite. They're not getting anything from the role guys in the non-starters consistently. So they need Steph to be amazing, which he was briefly in the second and in the third. And that's when the warriors flourished. So that's the good problem. if I have a team or a company and I have more of my employees producing at a high level,
Starting point is 00:05:04 making me less dependent on one employee, regardless of how talented, I want to beat you. And that is what is happening. Boston's got more players producing at a high level. Some starters, some non-starters, some role players. And let's talk about Robert Williams. Because I said, and I've been saying this now for a week, this is one of my best. better predictions. I said, keep your eye on Robert Williams controlling the series. Not Curry, not Clay, not Draymond, not Steph, not Jalen, not Marcus Smart. And I said,
Starting point is 00:05:36 watch Robert Williams. Because when Robert Williams is on the floor, the warriors get no or little interior scoring. It takes away a leg on the bar stool. So the Celtics now are scoring from the perimeter. They're scoring in transition and they're scoring in the paint. The warriors, when Williams is on the floor, they can score on jumper. and in transition, but they're struggling with any interior scoring last night. Celtics, 52 points in the paint, Warriors half that. Robert Williams is not going to win MVP, but I think he's the most valuable player on either team right now.
Starting point is 00:06:12 They, the Warriors, are completely limited offensively inside when he's on the floor. Now, he's hurt, so he's not going to give you 35 minutes, but he had the number one plus minus of any player on the floor last night. That is a huge factor in this series. The Celtics with Robert Williams on the floor eliminate a leg on the bar stool. And that's where we're at. And the other thing that's really hurting them, if you start looking at this, is that people can talk about what Tatum's doing and what Steph's doing. But we tend to forget this, how valuable this jumper by Steve Kerr was or this basket by Scotty Pippen was or this coaching move by Phil Jackson was.
Starting point is 00:06:59 You know, it always just comes down to the stars. But what we're finding out in the NBA now is you've got to have a couple stars. You often have to have three stars. Well, what's happening is Robert Williams is becoming a star in the series. He's just doing it differently on the defensive end. He is shutting down Golden State's interior scoring. I think it's a, and that is an unsolvable issue. The Warriors are small.
Starting point is 00:07:22 If their number two pick a couple years ago, James Wiseman was playing, maybe it's different. He's not. But they revolutionize small ball. They've met their match because Robert Williams can get out on the wing and defend. You can get up the floor a little bit. So this to me, Jalen Brown talked about it after the game. He is changing this series. Now, he's heard a lot, and he limped around in the first two games of this series.
Starting point is 00:07:47 But it looks like he's now getting healthier. Rob is an excellent defensive player. In my opinion, he could have won defensive player a year as well. In that category, it was smart, but he had some injuries that probably took him out of the running, but Rob, when he's healthy, and he's out there moving like him,
Starting point is 00:08:06 he's one of the better defensive players in the league, so no surprise tonight. For the record, last night, as we always glom on to Steph and Tatum, Last night in game three, Horford, Robert Williams, Grant Williams combined 30 points, 68% field goal percentage, 23 rebounds, 5 blocks. The role players for the Warriors, let's say Jordan, Poole, Draymond Green, Otto, Porter combined, 18 points, one block. They're just not as productive. So this is the rare championship series where the star for Boston's not playing well.
Starting point is 00:08:45 but they are so deep and so productive off their star. It's everything. And I don't think it's a solvable issue unless Jordan Poole turns it around. And Draymond Green has back to back to back great games. I think it's a real issue. So I want to segue to something else. And this has been a topic a lot on our show. And I've said this a lot.
Starting point is 00:09:08 I thought it was crazy for KD to leave the Warriors. And Brooklyn's been a mess. But you know what Steph Curry misses in this series? He misses Kevin Durant. He misses Kevin Durant. Clay's been good, but you're watching the series. Great Steph plus good Clay. Brough, not enough.
Starting point is 00:09:31 It's just not enough. And Clay, maybe next year it's different, but he's limited. He's not getting you any interior points. He got zero interior points last night, and he's not as good a defender. So you're getting like the Splash brothers have become more of a drizzle. He's just not the same. He's not as good a defender. And, you know, it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:09:53 A lot of times when you get a sports divorce, there is a clear definitive winner. Brady, Belichick, I think we all know who won that one. LeBron leaving Cleveland, both times the winner was LeBron. But there are times when there's a massive breakup, become between icons or stars, and they probably were better served staying together. Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones. He was the best coach.
Starting point is 00:10:25 He was the most dynamic owner. I mean, Barry Switzer won with Jimmy's momentum. The longer he was there, the worse it got. If Jimmy and Jerry stay together, and that's where Jimmy ends it, you know how many Super Bowls I think the Cowboys have? A lot. I think they both, Jimmy went to Miami.
Starting point is 00:10:44 It's fine. But those guys should have stayed together. Jerry was just too much of a meddler, had too much vanity, and it didn't work. That's Jerry. But they should have stayed together. And KD. and Steph, there's two reasons why the Warriors really, really need Kevin Durant in the series. One, which is obvious. He's a get-a-bucket guy.
Starting point is 00:11:05 He can create his own shot. The second thing is, Kevin Durant's a willing defense. vendor and he's long. Look how small the Warriors look in this series. They just need his length every time. How many offensive rebounds last night did the Celtics have? Every time there's a ball in the air near the basket, Boston feels like they get it. An NBA general manager told me this years ago, he said, length is underrated.
Starting point is 00:11:35 He said, Scotty Pippin's one of the longest players he'd ever seen. He said that was Chicago Bulls teams. Harper was long. Rodman was long, Pippin was long. He said they would get two or three jump balls a game and give the ball to Michael Jordan. He said, how many of those big championships were decided by a bucket or two? Three or four possessions, volleyball in a round. He goes, the bulls were so long.
Starting point is 00:12:00 They won a lot of those jump balls. And then they handed the ball to Michael to finish. They need Kevin's not just a shot making. They need his length. They look tiny. Offensive glass Celtics are getting. second and third looks. And I think Steve Kerr talked about it after the game.
Starting point is 00:12:17 It's the Celtics just feel like they're playing downhill. First half, we didn't guard the ball well at all. That was really the main issue was the point of attack defense. They got past us. It wasn't, you know, based on many sets they were running. It was more just, you know, they're coming downhill at us and they got past us. and that hurt us. So Draymond Green getting a lot of pushback now.
Starting point is 00:12:47 You'll hear from Draymond coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:14:39 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:22 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking.
Starting point is 00:15:46 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose.
Starting point is 00:16:25 On my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. You're now entering the No Bull Zone sponsor by Credible. Great Rates. None of the bowl. So most championship teams, not all, not all, but most championship teams in all sports have a majority of their most important players in their athletic prime. Not all the time, but most.
Starting point is 00:16:54 The Celtics, and they're not a championship team yet, and only have one championship in 35 years. But most of their stars and their role players, Many of them are in their prime. Derek White's 27. Jason Tatum, Prime. Jalen Brown, Prime. Robert Williams Prime. Marcus Smart.
Starting point is 00:17:14 End of his prime, but prime. The Warriors are different. The Warriors are trying to bridge two groups. Steph, Clay, and Drayman, out of it. Jordan, Poole, Kaminga, Moses Moody, not ready yet. So it feels like when you watch this series, the Celtics are more balanced, and the Warriors are a little,
Starting point is 00:17:35 unbalanced. They're a little too old in spots and a little too young in spots. And I'll give you an example. Somebody I've talked about all season long for the Warriors is Jonathan Cumminga, 6-7 athletic. They're dying for another wing defender. Now he's 19. He'll play much more next year. Boy, they could use another guy that could beat you off the dribble. Moses Moody for the Warriors. Oh, he's 20. He'll probably be much better over the next two years. So in this moment, Boston's got more guys in their prime. They're more refined. They're more mature.
Starting point is 00:18:10 They're more emotionally ready. And Steve Kerr does not play young guys. His thing is he's been on championship college teams, championship spur teams, championship spur teams, championship warrior teams, championship bulls team. He's been surrounded by winners. Those teams were not led by kids. He was led by older Lude Olson and upperclassmen at Arizona. And he was, Chicago had older players. Jordan was older and Pippin was older and Ron Harper was older and Rodman was older
Starting point is 00:18:38 and the Warriors with his championship. Steph's been around and KD's been around and Iggy's been around. He's not a guy that goes to kids. So the Warriors now have this really, really interesting pool. James Wiseman, 21-year-old, number two picks, seven-foot athletic. God, could they use him? He's not ready. Cumminga, not ready.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Moses Moody, not ready. They're going to be potential stars for the Warriors. but they're probably not going to be ready to jump in for two years. Whereas all the Celtic guys, even your Derek White's, he's ready to play. That's not to say everybody's in their prime. Al Horford's past it. But again, they're not leaning on Al Horford. He was great for a game.
Starting point is 00:19:20 He was crucial for that moment. But I do feel like when I watch these two play, there's a balance and there's a lack of balance. And most championship teams, you're watching the games too. They just got more guys producing and more guys. guys ready and more refined players right now. The talent in Golden State, if you gave me, if you said you get either one of these rosters for the next 10 years, I would take Golden State because I think Kaminga's a star, Moody's a star, Wiseman could be a star, and I think in 10 years, Horford's out of the league, and Marcus March is probably out of the league, and Tatum's past
Starting point is 00:19:54 his prime. So I think the Warriors have a great roster. I don't know if it's ready for this moment. So far it doesn't look like the young guys are. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, the New York Times reported that Deshaun Watson had booked massage appointments with at least 66 women over 17 months. Wow.
Starting point is 00:20:20 And Kevin Stefanski was asked about the recent developments yesterday. We're here making sure that we get good practice in. The guys have a nice job out there today. I'm not going to comment past that. But, you know, I think we have to be respectful of the process, be respectful of the legal proceedings. If anything, we're trying to just focus on the day. I can't see past today, truly. So that's kind of where my focus is.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Good luck. I didn't really expect anything illuminating from Kevin Savansky there. However, it's becoming difficult personally for me to believe that the Browns did the due diligence that you would expect them to do before entering this contractual agreement of $230 million guaranteed with Josh. Even if you did. Even if you did. If somebody came to you and you had, you were a coach of a team or you ran a company
Starting point is 00:21:19 and they said, listen, I did something wrong 24 times. Would it be possible that wasn't the end of it? I mean, one thing if somebody came to you and said, I made a horrible mistake, I got into a traffic accident and I wasn't paying attention. You're like, and you looked and you're like, well, that's a bad day. Okay, this guy came to you with a list of transgressions.
Starting point is 00:21:42 He came with 22. Yeah. And now we've ballooned to 24. If somebody's done something inappropriate once, we all make mistakes and we should accept apologies. When somebody's come in 22 times, it's a habit, it's a pattern. Don't be shocked when you hire them. 22. It's a lifestyle.
Starting point is 00:21:59 That's exactly right. It's a, it's a lifestyle. It's a lifestyle. But we knew this. Like, this is not news at all. The only bit that changed in the situation was that they weren't moving forward with criminal charges. Yeah. So, again, they can say, the Browns can say that they did their research or whatever it is you want to call it. But did you? Because to your point, at 22, which is this has always been my, I mean, the fact that there are more cases is shocking 0% to me. I expected it. I've had these conversations about this stuff coming out.
Starting point is 00:22:35 66 is not the final number either. No, these are just the people who are willing to speak. It's probably well over 100. 24 are the women who are willing to move forward with cases. 66 is the women that he dealt with, and there are likely more than that. I mean, at this point, if you're arguing that there's not, you don't have stuff to do today? Are you an adult? he's obviously facing a potential suspension from the NFL.
Starting point is 00:22:57 He was asked yesterday about the New York Times article and declined to comment. And he said that any preferred statements, any statements that he had, he would prefer to come from his agent or his attorney, which at this point, I don't know why he would want more statements coming from his attorney. But another new development that could be very important is that the Texans will soon be added as defendants of many of the lawsuits filed by the women against Watson, according to Tony Busby, who is the attorney representing the women who are suing. Busby amended the lawsuits and will make the argument that the Texans knew or should have known about his sexual misconduct during the massage testants and therefore are liable to what happened to some of these women.
Starting point is 00:23:35 USA Today Sports reported that in April Watson's marketing manager testified in a pretrial deposition in February that the Texans had given Watson NDAs for him to have strangers sign in settings like massages. Oh, yeah, yeah, that's that's. Again, I've gotten many massages in my life. I've never had to ask someone to sign an NDA after doing it. This will all get played out in court. But I mean, this is where it's taking another, every day it's progressively getting worse, which is again, I don't get the delay.
Starting point is 00:24:11 I don't know what else there is you need to hear. If you're the NFL, this is getting worse every single day. It's now worse today than it was yesterday because now the Texans are being sued for giving him. him NDAs to give these women to sign. By the way, the Texans have massage therapists in-house that work for the team. If he wanted to use someone who was not with the team, they could also recommend professional massage therapists for him to use, also that wouldn't have to sign NDAs. So the team is giving him paperwork to sign to give two women who he is then going to and getting
Starting point is 00:24:48 massages from to the number of 66. I'm running out of words to describe how bad this situation is. And again, every single day gets worse. Lamar Jackson has not been attending Ravens voluntary OTAs of the last few weeks. But John Harbaugh said yesterday he is expecting him to be at mandatory minicamp next week. I know he's working hard. You know, Lamar Jackson's a hard worker. So I'm not worried about how hard he's working.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Fully expecting to come back in great shape. That's what he talks about. And I'm sure he's throwing. I'm sure he's doing a good job. And when he gets back here, we'll be rolling with Lamar. Right now we roll with the guys we got. And when he gets here, he'll merge right in with everybody and we'll go to work with Lamar.
Starting point is 00:25:31 So obviously the conversation surrounding Lamar, particularly this year, is his contract. He is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He is not engaged with the team on a potential contract extension. He's set to make over $23 million guaranteed on the fifth year option of his rookie contracts coming up this season. Now, as the Browns are falling apart, and as the Steelers are using Mitch Tribusky, just think about this.
Starting point is 00:25:56 You have to consider the division. Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, are the two best quarterbacks capable of playing. So you can not sign him, but this is another classic moment for your franchise. You got Cleveland is a circus. I don't think he's going to play to Sean.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Pittsburgh's got a rookie that we don't love and Mitch Trubisky. So in this division, you get very few opportunities and weakness from everybody. So right now there's an opportunity for Baltimore to go, okay, Pittsburgh's not there yet quarterback, Cleveland's chaos at quarterback, and Burrow is not going anywhere. Like to me, if I'm Baltimore, I just figure this out. It's like I said with Arizona. McVeigh's not going anywhere and Stafford's not getting worse, but the Seahawks are rebuilding
Starting point is 00:26:41 and the Niners don't know what's up with Trey Lance. Here's your moment. Signed Kyler Murray. Take an advantage. These franchises, aggressive wins. Don't the cost, give him money up front, give him guaranteed money, but there are these, in these tough divisions, you get cracks, you get crevices to take advantage of brief weaknesses from your rivals.
Starting point is 00:27:05 You have to jump on it. If Nick Staben got sick for six months, that is your opening. You go grab, you know what I mean? Some of these divisions are so good in the NFL, it's inches not feet. like Baltimore, Arizona, you've got real chaos in your division. Seize the moment, sign your star quarterback. Well, yeah, I would agree, but the difference between Kyla Murray and Lamar is Kyla Murray has an agent.
Starting point is 00:27:28 That's not ideal. Lamar hasn't engaged with the team on a potential contract extension. So it's not like someone is working on this deal and they have a bottom line that that Lamar and his agent are moving off of and the team is just trying to figure it out. They're not even having the conversation. So is it a question of, is Lamar just betting on himself to try and get a bigger contract after this year because his year this year is fully guaranteed at 23 million. It's a really complicated situation. I'm sure that the Ravens want to get something done,
Starting point is 00:27:56 but there's no one in the background working on this deal while Lamar is focused on football. So it's kind of a unique situation. So the Utah Jazz are looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Quinn Snyder. And according to Woge, one potential candidate is Frank Vogel. Vogel is expected to interview for the position after being let go as the Lakers coach. the list of potential candidates for the head coaching job are Vogel, Chris Quinn, who is an assistant with the Heat, Celtics assistant Will Hardy, Nick's assistant Johnny Bryant, jazz assistant Joe Missoula, Buck's assistant Charles Lee, former Blazers's head coach, Terry Stotz, and jazz assistant coach Alex Jensen. I don't know much about Chris Quinn. Do you? You know the heat. I don't. He's played with Wade for four seasons. And he was a teammate of Wade's. He's been, he's been an assistant coach. with the heat for a while as well.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Now Wade's now connected to the jazz. And Wade is now a minority owner of the team. That seems to me like that would be the lead candidate. It does feel like Chris Quinn has the most momentum in this situation. Obviously, Frank Vogel is a great candidate as well, championship winning coach. He does also seem to fit what the jazz do. He's not a very, you know, explosive guy. You know, he just, he's kind of the opposite of what Quinn Snyder is, like, very high energy, very intense person.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Right. And a good coach. but I think Chris Quinn is probably the direction that they'll end up going in. It seems like he has the most momentum here. And I'm sure Frank Vogel at this point is going to take his time with what situation he takes. He's earned that right as a coach at this point in his career to wait for the right situation because we don't know who are you going to be coaching. Like this jazz team could look very different.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Vogel loves Biggs. Vogel would take Rudy Gobert. But it's really going to be there. That's the question. Like you really don't know what job you're taking as this, you know, you know, you know, jazz offseason develops. Yeah, joy with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 00:29:48 And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. We don't talk a lot of golf, but I do think this is impactful. The PGA tour has suspended all these American golfers who took some Saudi Arabia money to join the LIV tour, which, interesting, nobody's already talking about it. Four of those events are on American soil, but let's get mad at the golfers. Now, it doesn't mean those guys can't play like Phil at the Masters or the U.S. Open, and let's be honest, that's the only time we watch golf.
Starting point is 00:30:19 It really is. But Rory McElroy said something yesterday, and I love Rory. I said years and years and years ago, I thought he is the only young player that had a chance to replace Tiger Woods. He had the alpha. He had the game. He just felt big to me. It never transpired, although he's had a legendary career.
Starting point is 00:30:39 But he talked about Phil and Dustin. and DeShambo and Patrick Reed taking all this big money to play for a tournament backed by Saudi Arabia. It's their life, it's their decision. They can live it the way they want to. But for me, you know, I want to play on the PJ Tour against the best players in the world. I was speaking to a few people yesterday,
Starting point is 00:31:02 and one of the comments was anything, any decision that you make in your life that's purely for money usually doesn't end up going the right way. I totally agree with him there. So I can think two things at once. I've said that on the show. I've never made a decision totally for money. And he's right.
Starting point is 00:31:21 It almost always goes the wrong way. But I just want you to think about this. We've got NBA stars playing in China. We send our amazing Olympic athletes to Soshi Vladimir Putin's purchased Olympics. We send our amazing soccer stars to Qatar. TAR. Everybody's good with it. Saudi Arabia and the United States have an interesting relationship.
Starting point is 00:31:50 I'm going to read you something from our state department today. Their website, I looked it up. The United States and Saudi Arabia enjoy a strong economic relationship. The United States is Saudi Arabia's second largest trading partner. And Saudi Arabia is one of the United States largest trading partners in the Middle East. and you're mad at golfers. They murdered an American journalist. No sanctions by America.
Starting point is 00:32:20 9-11, our FBI reports, the Saudi government probably help fund al-Qaeda. No sanctions. And you want me to be outraged over Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. Can't get there. Our government is in a strong, among all these countries, a strong relationship with Saudi Arabia. These tournaments are all over American soil.
Starting point is 00:32:53 Nobody's outraged at the golf courses in Miami or Oregon or Colorado or Illinois. No, it's just attack the golfers. You know, I always feel like parents are more responsible than their children. I also feel our governments more responsible for things than our citizens, right? We're all, we all want them to answer for the blood money. Where are the sanctions against Saudi Arabia for killing an American journalist, which the Saudis now acknowledge, and 9-11, which our FBI believes al-Qaeda was funded at some level by the Saudi government?
Starting point is 00:33:35 People in power should be held to a more responsible level. These are golfers. Golfers are free agent. They're like tracks. stars. You pay a track star to come throw a discus or a javelin or run. Where's the track meet? They'll go. And they should. They have a limited time to be great. Our golfers have traveled the world. The world's golfers have traveled the world. Who's paying? All go. We don't hold them to a certain standard on what that government, how that government acts. I've said before, I agree with Rory.
Starting point is 00:34:11 I think this could go sideways for these guys because the Saudi government has not always been an honest actor. And going forward, if they do bad things, it will circle back to a Mickelson or a Dustin Johnson. But I think we should hold our government more accountable than we do. Our athletes are athletes. The NBA is all in on China and too many people are picking on LeBron. We've had 25 games where the NBA has sent players to China.
Starting point is 00:34:41 The track record of horrible, horrible treatment of humans. That's what I'm defending. The individual. Be harder on our governing bodies. Don't rush to Twitter to attack people you'll never meet doing things you probably would have done in a second. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Starting point is 00:37:26 Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:37:55 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. And we're still chasing it. and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.

He covered Michael Jordan and the Bulls for the Chicago Sun Times. He covered Kobe Bryant and the Lakers for the LA Times. So he has spanned multiple decades. Jay Adande, the director of sports journalism at the Medill School of Journalism in Chicago. So, you know, I said, I look at this series and what I see is a higher percentage of Celtic players in their prime, stars and role players. And the Warriors are trying to bridge this gap of young guys that aren't ready and old guys that are a little bit too old.
Starting point is 00:39:55 So, Jay, that's what I see in this series, Jay, what do you see so far that's giving the Celtics the edge? Yeah, it's similar, Colin. And it's that philosophy that the Warriors tried and have had pretty good success of trying to have it both ways of trying to maintain their core, their championship core, end plan for the future. But it's catching up with them in this series. And the philosophy shift that the Celtics have made after years of trying to do what the Warriors did, of trying to protect their assets and not give away any of their pieces and their draft capital and try to hit the deep three-point shot. well, then they settled for the mid-range this year and made the trade for Derek White. And he's had an impact throughout the playoffs. You know, it's not the big splashing move, but it's effective.
Starting point is 00:40:39 The Warriors, I'm wondering now if there are any bit of regret in not moving either the pick or the player it became in James Wiseman, who, you know, his has been able to play, he's been injured this year. You know, even if he had been playing, wouldn't necessarily be ready to contribute to a championship team right now in year two. And you're wondering if they could use that space right now for an impact? player because they don't have the size is the number one thing, Colin. They got outscores 52 to 26 in the paint. They need more size, just physicality. No, I think this is a really interesting point, is I think by the time that Wiseman and
Starting point is 00:41:15 Cominga and Moody are ready to play, Drayman, Steph, and Clay are probably too old to contribute to a championship team. I think that's a fascinating point with Wiseman. So I think they're trying to take guys that are too young and a bit old, and they're trying to like synchronize it. And to your point, what they could use is size, a wing defender, and Kerr historically doesn't play young guys in the postseason. You know, it is interesting when you look at Jason Tatum. I always thought Michael Jordan ruined it. Jerry West was known as Mr. Clutch, and he lost his first eight finals, right? The minute Jordan came, our standard for clutch is
Starting point is 00:41:56 now unattainable. I mean, LeBron's been unbelievable. Magic was in nine finals. He won five. That's staggering. But up against Michael, it's like, oh, boy. So we're looking at Tatum now, and we're looking at Steph. And let's take Tatum. And everybody's picking him apart. My takeaway is, well, Michael struggled against Utah. You know, his efficiency went down is you covered a lot of these. You covered bad Kobe final games. You covered, I think what Tatum's going through here is what happens when you face great teams is you may get your points, but they're not going to be pretty and they're not going to be efficient. Go back to your career and the stars you covered. Yeah, and when you're the focal point of the defense and how can
Starting point is 00:42:40 you adjust? And again, he had 13 assists in game one, so he was being effective there. And the whole thing of having a one-two punch is that you don't always have to be the guy. So in the first half last night in game three. Jalen Brown was certainly getting it done, especially in the first quarter. And then Tatum came alive in the fourth quarter as well. And Jeff Van Gunny pointed out, he was, he was being effective in his drives. And when he did drive, he was going all the way. He wasn't being timid. He was really attacking the basket. And he got enough. He did enough for them to win. It's funny because, no, there's no standout so far for the Celtics. You were going to ask me the finals MVP so far. I'd actually say step hurry because he's been the most consistent.
Starting point is 00:43:24 He's given his team the most night in and night out to put them in position to win games and win this series. But, you know, there's still a lot of time for someone to emerge. Maybe Jaylen Brown, maybe Tatum, maybe Al Horford will have a resurgence here, maybe Derek White, maybe Robert Williams, who's been playing incredible. So we'll still see who can be the MVP. And I'm certainly not writing off Jason Tatum. He was at his best in game six and seven of the Milwaukee series. Maybe if this goes six or seven, he'll be at his best here in the final. So people were asking Draymond Green about his podcast. Is he giving away insight? You got brought into these finals, Colin, this podcast on the volume network. You're part of
Starting point is 00:44:05 this series now. Yeah, yeah, great. He says it's the new media. This is what it is. What do you make of Green? He is sort of a little bit of a disruptor in the podcast space. What do you make of all of it as you witness it? Well, the notion that he's giving away these secrets in his podcast about the defensive approach to the Celtics, I mean, the Celtics can watch the video, right? They can see what he's doing. So it's no great secret what he did in game two that was effective. And so they're not going to base his attack or counterattack on his words.
Starting point is 00:44:38 They're going to base it on what they see in the video. And basically what they experience in real time as they're going against them. They're NBA players and they have NBA coaches and they can pick it apart. They don't need the podcast. The intriguing stat is that somebody pointed out he has more podcast than Block Shouts over the course of this series. And, you know, it's weird because he's not a guy that you don't think of statistics when you think of Draymond, but he does need to put up triple doubles or at least triple double type. And it doesn't need to be 30 point triple doubles.
Starting point is 00:45:06 10, 10 and 10 would suffice just great. But he had a total of 10 combined points, rebounds, and assists in game three. So he has to be more productive. has to have more of an impact statistically. And we don't think of stats with Draymond, but he does need to put some stats on the board. Kevin Durant, I watched that series last night. Forget about his scoring.
Starting point is 00:45:28 They could use his length and defense. Absolutely. I said sometimes there's a clear winner in a divorce, Brady over Belichick. And sometimes Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson, they both would have been better staying together for another seven or eight years. What do you make of the Warriors without Kevin Durant?
Starting point is 00:45:43 Well, they're 9 and 12 in finals games without Kevin Durant since 2015, and they're 9 and 1 in the 10 finals games he did play with them. So, yeah, I think you're seeing, you can appreciate Kevin Durant a little bit more in what he meant to what was a great team, but how he made them virtually unbeatable in the finals. And you wonder if Durant, the way these last couple years have gone, has missed being with the Warriors. I mean, I think he's at peace with the decision that he made to leave. I think the Warriors have successfully moved on. They're not caught in the past, talking about Kevin Durand at every turn. But together, they were unbeatable in the finals. Without him, the Warriors, it's a real struggle for them to win.
Starting point is 00:46:27 And again, 9 and 12 now in 21 finals games they've played without. Jay, one minute left, 90 seconds left. You covered stuff in the late 80s, 90s, 2000s, and Draymond Green talked about all the tough guys. And he said, you guys always talk about how tough they were, but they were. those players, the three or four guys that were tough guys. I mean, you compare the 80s, 90s, 2000s early to today's tough guys in the NBA. What do you make of the physicality difference? I don't know who are the tough guys is the thing. You know, like there's Twitter tough guys. I'd say that's the biggest difference. You've got Twitter tough guys, guys who act and say a lot on
Starting point is 00:47:02 social media, but you don't see a lot of enforcers out there. And to Draymond's point that he said, you know, there's a lot more skill out there, you know, the enforcers have been basically eliminated from the game because they're too much of an offensive liability. You have to be able to score in this game. And Draymond's on the verge of getting eliminated, unless he finds some skill plays again. He's got to contribute. He's got to make more of a statistical impact on these games. He doesn't need to flex, though. He doesn't need to beat anybody up. Just make a statistical impact. That's the modern NBA. Jay Adande. Great seeing you again, my man. Great to see you, Colin. Yeah. You know, it's really interesting. He talks about that earlier point, and I think
Starting point is 00:47:40 it's interesting. The warriors decided we're going to keep Moody, keep Jordan Pool, keep Caminga, keep Wiseman. That's our future. But it's not helping you today, right? Like, it's not helping you. So the first thing, I mean, when Brad Stevens was the coach of the Celtics moved upstairs, he went and got Al Horford. He goes, we're kind of young. I need a veteran on this team. I need a guy who's been in big games, Al Horford. And so you look at the warriors and they're reluctance to move off young guys. Kamingi I would not move off up. Moody I would not move off of.
Starting point is 00:48:17 James Wiseman, number two pick. You get something for James Wiseman. Could you get even a non-starter, but a valuable wing defender? But that's not what they wanted. So you make these decisions all the time. And again, if the Warriors won last night,
Starting point is 00:48:35 we're not having this discussion. But it does feel like the Warriors could really use one more body in their prime. They feel like a guy short. And good luck. But that's the balance you play. You know, we want youth, but if you have youth, it does no good if it's not ready to play now. And you're a really good team.
Starting point is 00:48:57 But you don't want to get rid of your youth because you want to protect your future. So it's just that balance that Boston has, it feels like they have, it's just been perfect. They're just moving. In Golden States, like, can we? We get a little less young in some spots and get more productive in one spot. The James Wiseman question, when they lose this series, that's going to be asked time and time again. Hour two on a Thursday. Good show today flying by.
