This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule.

On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black.

Here we go.
It is a Wednesday.
A lot of stories brewing here.
It's The Herd.
Wherever you may be, however, you may be listening.
IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, Joel Klatte, joins me in one hour.
Humongous weekend of college football.
Gigantic matchups with undefeated teams.
Huge weekend in the NFL as well.
JMAQ is joining us.
Well, we've got all sorts of stories here.
Devante Adams in trouble.
It's been a week of conflict.
and you watch some fans overreact massively.
They think I underreact massively, and here we are.
It's a big Miami Dolphins news breaking in the last 30 minutes as well,
so it's an action-packed Wednesday show for the hurt.
Let's start with this.
So in the last couple of weeks, we've had some video out there,
the Devante Adams stuff.
We'll get to that in a bit.
But the Draymond Green punch that TMZ had,
it was leaked by somebody to TMZ,
Dremont punching a teammate.
I said at the time, this is not rare.
I called immediately two executives in the NBA and they're like,
coaches will never tell you this, but they like tough practices.
In fact, Flip Saunders said back in 2015, the late great coach of the Timberwolves,
the reason coaches don't want practice open is this stuff happens all the time and they don't want it out.
Many of you were screaming should be arrested, should be that he was not suspended by the warriors.
And I know a lot of you say this, well, at my work, it is not your work.
If I punched you at work, HR people would come screaming down the hall.
In this instance, there's no HR people there.
Steve Kirk closed the doors and they had a meeting.
It's different.
There is conflict and yelling and screaming.
And privately, coaches like a lot of this stuff.
They're trying to build strong teams mentally and strong teams physically.
They want really brutal practice.
There is a sanitized version of sports that you see, and then the doors close and the cameras are off.
That's why even at USC practice, 10 minutes you get warmups.
Then they ask the media to leave.
In the NFL, maybe you get seven minutes.
Then they ask you to leave.
What you see is sanitized, and occasionally the real part of sports leaks out.
That's an offensive coordinator throwing headsets, looks like a crazy person.
it happens every weekend.
A player punching,
Steve Kerr said it's happened 20 times in his career.
Damien Lillard came out of the Blazers and said,
I've seen more of that in college than pro.
And Steve Kerr addressed it.
They are not suspending him.
They are fining him.
He'll play in their final preseason game this Friday.
Here, Steve Kerr.
We feel like we have a great feel for our team.
You know, we've got a lot of continuity on this team.
so Bob and I know our players extremely well,
and we feel like this is the best way after assessing everything for us to move forward.
It's never easy.
No matter what decision you make in a situation like this, it's not going to be perfect.
Pro athletes often thrive in environments like this.
Football coaches and basketball coaches.
They don't want altercations all the time, but they want teams that are tough mentally and tough physically.
And how do you get that way?
How do you get that way?
Tough practices, pushing, shoving, and occasional fights.
Now, all that said, Steve Kerr also said this.
This is the biggest crisis that we've ever had since I've been coach here.
It's a really serious stuff.
We're not perfect.
You know, our team isn't perfect.
Bob and I have definitely made our share of mistakes over the years.
But we're going to lean on the experience that we have together in over the last nine years
and trust that this is the best decision for our team.
So this altercation can be two things.
I know, I know social media won't allow it, but it's two things.
It's not that rare and it's not that outrageous.
And you don't need to call police.
This happens a lot.
And this is a little uglier than they'd prefer.
and an older veteran, expensive player passed his prime Draymond,
and an emerging ascending young player who's in the future plans,
they want to protect him too.
Now, the warriors do a very good job at fixing things.
They fix the Kevin Durant left thing quite well.
They fix being down to the Celtics quite well.
Sometimes Draymond creates those,
and sometimes he has solved those.
So things can be two things at one.
not nearly as rare as you think,
and the kind of thing,
a veteran attacking and ascending young player
that can tear at the fabric of your culture,
which is the best in the league.
Steve Kerr said,
we're not suspending him,
but we got a little mini crisis.
It's not our first.
We're good at solving them.
And there you go.
All right,
I want to mention this.
One of the things about this business is I've never thought,
and I think I've said this,
over and over again.
I tell young broadcasters all the time,
don't worry about being right.
Try to be right,
but don't be paralyzed by being right.
Do yourself a favor.
Be interesting.
Interesting pays really well.
Right?
A lot of guys are right.
Right gets obnoxious, right?
And, but there are times,
there are arguments years ago,
I said when the Lakers split Kobe and shack up,
I said they made the right decision.
Now, I'm going to have to eat a dirt sandwich for about two years
because Shaq is joining D. Wade in his prime and Pat Riley, the architect, Miami's going to be
really good instantly. But the long-term play, and I felt I was right and I was right, was Kobe.
Kobe worked harder, was younger, was in better shape, was less distracted. In the end,
you got a couple of titles from Kobe. He aged better, sold a lot of tickets, was more focused.
But initially, you lose on that, right, as a talk show host. And I feel this about the Dallas Cowboys
and Dak Prescott. For years and years and years, I have been saying,
DAC is Kirk Cousins with swag.
He's a good B quarterback.
Sometimes his staff, if you look at him in a blind resume, you're like, whoo.
And then you're like, then you unveil the blind resume and go, well, it is Kirk Cousins.
He's not great in prime time.
And you unveil the DAC blind resume.
And you're like, yeah, he doesn't beat good teams.
So this argument has definitively been solved.
DAC is not an A quarterback.
So Cooper Rush and Andy Dalton with Mike McCarthy.
who's not an elite coach, right, in most eyes,
those two quarterbacks are nine and five without DAC.
That is a 64% winning percentage.
Dak Prescott, his winning percentage in Dallas, is less.
It's 62%.
Now, what does that mean?
If you have a star quarterback, here's how it works.
Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots won 77% of his games with Brady.
Brady left, four other quarterbacks, Castle, Bledsoe, Cam, Mac Jones, Bailey's Appy,
he won 49% of his games.
That's Bill Belichick.
Andy Reed with the Chiefs has won 64% of his games without Mahalms, 80% with him.
John Harbaugh with the Ravens, with Lamar Jackson, 74% wins.
Without Lamar, he's won 57% of his games.
even Jimmy Garoppolo, who you all despise with Garoppolo,
69% winner is Kyle Shanahan.
Without him, 24%.
Brady, Mahomes, Lamar, Garapolo.
If you have a star, even a great coach, Reed, Harbaugh, Kyle, Belichick,
not going to win as much.
Cooper and Andy Dalton fill in with Mike McCarthy?
their winning percentage is slightly better than DAC.
Now, some of this could be situational.
This is not a criticism.
But the Cooper Company, Andy Dalton, is validation,
illustration, verification, and of an inarguable truth.
That Dak Prescott is a franchise quarterback.
And like Kirk Cousins, there are some intangibles I love.
But if you have a star quarterback,
even a great coach can't win.
in San Francisco, Kyle Shanahan wins 24% of his games.
The greatest coach Bill Belichick in New England wins less than half his games without Brady.
Mahomes in Kansas City, and he took over a team that had some players.
65% winner.
With Mahomes, it's 80.
That is the gap.
That is a star quarterback in this league.
So it's not a shot at DAC.
It is an illustration of the reality.
With Mike McCarthy, he went over 60.
263, 64% with Cooper Rush and Andy Dahl.
About 62, 63% with Dac.
I think Dax's obviously better than Dalton and Cooper Rush.
Some of it can be situational in who you play.
But we've always knocked Kirk Cousins because he can't win the prime time games.
Go look at Dax last five years.
He can't beat the good teams.
It's the same thing.
Dack is Kirk, both B Plus, but he's got more swag.
All right.
The DeVante Adams stuff is around the corner.
Very serious. Kansas City PD is on the case, and we'll have that around the corner for you.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio,

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table.
right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years
for black people in American history.

Welcome to my new podcast,
Learn the Hard Way with me, your host,
and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
And in recognition of mental health awareness month,
I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience
in the mental health field
and conversations with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking.
Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different.
intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be
a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood,
pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, our Heart Radio app,
search Learn the Hardway, and listen now. One of my many criticisms of defensive coaches, and we've
talked about this all the time, this could be relatable to you, me, sometimes you work in an
industry and the culture changes. It goes very quickly into tech.
and you're kind of caught flat-footed if you're older and you're not on your devices like your
kids are all day. And so you've got to be kind of able to see what's around the corner,
what's happening in your industry, what's not happening in your industry. I was just talking to
somebody a couple of months ago about in Los Angeles, I think, or California, you're going to have
to have a college degree to be a real estate agent. That's around the corner. Somebody told me
and I thought, boy, you better think about that if you want to be a real estate agent. You didn't
have to for years and years. So it was just kind of a casual conversation. And I think about these
defensive head coaches. I said this.
about Ron Rivera. He never got the urgency. Same with Brian Flores, the urgency or the ability and the
importance of quarterback. You used to be able to win a lot of different ways in this league. You can't
anymore. If you're not good at quarterback, you're not winning games. Mike Tomlin's got a problem
on his hands. Ben got old fast. They did not sense the urgency. They walked on eggshells. Then they went
and spent no money on Mitch Trubisky, a backup in this league. Then they got caught kind of flat-footed.
bad quarterback draft and they needed one desperately and they drafted Kenny Pickett who my sources
and people I trust said was a second or an early mid third round prospect.
So last week they got absolutely crushed.
If you look at their next three games, it's Tampa and Tom Brady loss.
Miami, two will play then loss.
At Philly, Jalen hurts that offense.
Loss.
They'll be one in seven.
That's very reasonable.
They'll be dogs or big dogs in all those games.
At least Mike Tomlin now does appear to,
understand he's got a major problem on his hands.
We were a disaster kind of in all three phases,
and we have to own that, starting with myself, and I do.
When it's that bad across the board, it starts with me.
We don't need to seek comfort because, you know,
there's enough blame to go around.
We need to be solution-oriented,
but I don't intend to change for the sake of changing
to shoot a hostage, if you will, or anything of that nature.
If changes produce better outcomes or seemingly produce better,
outcomes or we feel like it puts us in position to produce better outcomes and I'm open to it,
certainly.
Now, Tomlin for years, feasted on the cheapness, the frugality of the Bengals and the dysfunction
of Cleveland.
But now Cincinnati has a good coach and a great quarterback.
And now Cleveland has what I think is a really good coach in Kevin Stefanski.
He's young, but he's very good and Deshaun Watson's around the corner.
And for years, Tomlin could roll out Big Ben and you just won those games.
and that's over.
The division now is Lamar Jackson,
Joe Burrow, Deshawn Watson, and Kenny Pickett.
That is 0.6, potentially, for the next half decade,
unless a defensive coach and Mike Tomlin gets what Ron Rivera hasn't.
urgency.
You've got to do something big.
You've got to take a big swing.
Cleveland did with Deshawn Watson, like it or not.
Baltimore did with Lamar Jackson.
Cincinnati, Jamar Chase.
They weren't supposed to draft him, right?
They went out and got a star receiver.
I think Pittsburgh's got to figure out over the next 12 games.
Can Kenny Pickett play?
If not, you draft another quarterback.
These defensive coaches do not get the urgency of it.
You draft another quarterback.
Or you go upstairs and you tell the Rooney family,
we have got to buy the most expensive, talented,
offensive staff in the league.
Now, with Kenny Pickett, the good news is,
you're not paying him anything,
so maybe you have to go by the left tackle and center,
best left tackle, best center on the market.
It's not your skill players.
It's not your tight end.
It's not your running back.
Your own line's a mess and your offensive coordinator's not working.
But this is your classic example.
If there was an offensive coach in Pittsburgh today,
you know and I know,
they would be making a judgment on Kenny Pickett
and ready to move off him.
McVeigh moved off golf.
Shanahan was ready to move off Garapolo.
You certainly have to be willing to move off Kenny Pickett in the next 12 games.
J-Mac with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
It's lighting the internet on fire right now, this update from Kansas City.
Huge, massive news.
Devonte Adams has officially been charged with misdemeanor assault for shoving this cameraman
to the ground on Monday night football in the Raiders' loss.
to the Chiefs. The NFL is reviewing the situation, you know, potential suspension or fine.
Colin, I read the police report. This guy who I didn't see his name anywhere, although they
foolishly put Devante Adams address in. I saw that. Unbelievable. He's claiming he got whiplash
and a headache and a possible minor concussion. I'm surprised I didn't send Kansas City homicide
on this. The judge needs to look at this, see the video, and toss it out the window and say, get the
hell out of my courtroom.
This is embarrassing. Come on.
Well, listen, my takeaway on this is I think most fans go to games, and it's a little too expensive.
They hate the prices.
But I'm watching the Dodger game last night.
You're going there.
You love your players.
You're rooting for your team.
I'm watching Yankee fans last night.
But there are an element of fans who are envious, jealous, bitter, and looking for payouts.
We've got people running on the field with a smoke bomb.
He wants to file a suit.
This guy wants to file a suit.
Now, I don't like Devante Adams pushing anybody.
A good rule is always just keep your hands off people.
Politics, sports, just keep your hands off people.
Now, at practice, when you're with peers, that's different.
I mean, sports literally has people beating on each other.
It's called boxing and UFC.
That's their work.
Physicality is the job of a football player.
And he was walking to his place of business, the locker room.
But I think this is a reality.
There are a percentage of people out there.
And they're just, I mean, come on.
They're just looking.
for they have a job, they don't love it, they're ticked off.
He's looking for a payout. That's pretty obvious.
We could say that, right?
I mean, I would be embarrassed to file this.
You got a headache and you're filing a lawsuit on someone?
Yeah.
Like, this is pathetic.
But I did hear you there in Keep Your Hands Off People.
Yes, I think that's a good rule.
Dremont Green, I wish he...
Well, but now that's different.
That is a professional sports environment.
You're not asked to keep your hands off people.
Steve Kerr wants Draymond's hands on everybody.
He wants physical.
He wants him to push.
Steph Curry came out and said, I didn't like the punch, but I'll defend Draymond to the core.
He's made us a better team.
So you're talking about sports is not sanitized.
This is a civilian getting into an altercation with an athlete, and you're not going to be able to push him.
Now, assault, Kansas City PD.
It's a bridge too far for me, Kyle.
A little bit too far from me.
All right.
Next step.
There's fans that are getting, listen, you know the internet.
It's probably 90, 20, 10 in favor.
of the camera guy.
Can we call this guy a dope?
I'm not here to call him a dope.
Fine. I'll call him a dope. Fine. I'll call him a dope.
Okay. All right.
That's stupid. All right. Next up, NFC East, Sunday night football.
It's a good one.
Cowboys taking on the undefeated Eagles, Nick Siriani.
He's already worried about trying to contain the league's co-leader in sacks,
Micah Parsons. I think he's second pressures.
Parsons is just wrecking game plans league-wide.
He is.
Here's what Siriani had to say about slowing down Micah Parsons.
Whatever you do again, you're trying to put your players.
and the best positions to succeed, and while you're doing that, you're trying not to allow
their best players to wreck the game.
And so he'll be accounted for every single play.
That doesn't mean he's not going to make some plays here and there.
He's a really outstanding, outstanding player.
I think we all know that.
The league knows that he's proved it for the last year and a half.
I can't get over Nick Sirian.
I get the hat all low.
Was he incognito?
What's going on here?
I will say, though,
This is a tough spot for the Cowboys.
So I really like Philadelphia early.
The line has now jumped to six.
Is that DAC is going to practice today.
So you got Cooper Rush and Dak now splitting reps.
The team's not sure who's going to play.
This would be a hard game to win with DAC healthy.
Now you've got like a 50% Jack.
That plays.
Nobody's quite sure.
I think this puts McCarthy in a tough spot.
this feels like a really, really difficult...
My takeaway is you go with Cooper Cup,
you just tell Dak, we're going to watch some stuff here.
But, I mean, this feels like it's a huge disadvantage
for the Cowboys going back and forth on quarterback.
By the way, speaking of back and forth,
Cowboys were at the New York Giants.
They had to fly to New York.
Then they had to fly to L.A.
Now they've got to fly to Philly.
Third straight road game for the Cowboys.
Cooper Rush, this is a tall order.
I like the Eagles.
But again, check that offensive line.
There are some injuries for the Eagles.
That's significant.
And finally, Colin, Patrick Mahome,
and the Chiefs. They're hosting Josh
Allen and the Bills in Sundays, you know,
probably the best game of the day, although
Jets Packers is right there with it.
It's a rematch of the
playoff game last year that was incredible,
but for the first time in his career,
Colin, this is a stat Fox unearthed.
Patrick Mahomes is an
underdog at home. That's never
happened before. Well, I was thinking about this
this morning.
Kansas City
and Buffalo have some
similarities. Very explosive.
offensive offenses, high-powered, transformational quarterbacks.
The difference is, do you think this will be a close game?
I do.
That's why I like Kansas City.
Oh, interesting.
Buffalo, this is why I call them, they're the Mike Tyson of the league.
If you get them an inferior opponent, Kansas City will play around with inferior opponents.
They'll win, they'll play around with them.
They'll fall behind 17-0.
Buffalo steamrolls inferior opponents because of their defense.
And so when you have a defense as dominant as San Francisco or Buffalo,
and they're facing an average quarterback,
games over in five minutes.
I mean, that Pittsburgh game is over in 10th.
Kansas City's defense is not as dominating.
It will eventually make a play,
but you can hang around Kansas City a lot longer.
But when these two meet, I'm going with Kansas City.
They have shown the ability to consistently fall behind, race back, and win.
Buffalo's done it before, but it's not their bread and butter.
Their bread and butter is the avalanche downhill to an ineffective offense and winning by two touchdowns.
That's what their – I mean, if you say Buffalo, you think blowout win.
If you think Kansas City, part of their legacy has come from behind win.
And so this is going to be a close game.
I'm always going to take Kansas City, read the Holmes in a close game.
Now, think about the average guy watching this show right now.
You just watch the Chiefs have to come back from 17-0.
That's right.
And, you know, someone like they get lucky to beat the Raiders.
on Monday night. What did the Buffalo bills do? They won by 35 points, hammer the Steelers.
So everybody and their mom is going to be on Buffalo this weekend. Everybody.
I'll have some good numbers for you on teams that win games by over 30 points, what they do
do the following week. They don't win. It's not good.
I like Kansas City in this game. I think I'm with you on the Chiefs here.
I think I like Kansas City. I like Kansas City to win the game. I do worry about that kicker
situation. He's terrible. I mean, he missed two from inside 45 and then hit from 59. Did you
see that? Yes. He's the backup guy. But at any rate, all right, Colin. That's it.
Mac with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
Joel Clatt.
Top of next hour.
So I thought, look at that lineup today.
Nick Wright, Joel Clat, A. Rod, Mark Schlerth.
That's good.
So the Ringer had an article.
They were talking about the Packers issues.
And if you really look at Green Bay right now, I went and got their schedule this morning.
They opened at Minnesota.
They got thumped.
They beat Chicago a bad team, in my opinion, handily.
Tampa Bay and New England, they won, but the Patriots were on a third-string quarterback
at Lambo, and Tampa was missing all of its top receivers.
And then they got thumped by New York, which literally ran over them like a UPS truck in the second
half.
So the ringers take is the defensive issues with Green Bay are a coaching issue.
But the offensive issues, well, that's a scheme issue.
And to that I would say, well, who.
creates the scheme. Here's the thing. Kansas City loses Tyreek Hill. Kansas City's
offense, still productive. San Francisco is missing eight starters. The best left tackle in
football. They're star running back. Their star tied end for a while. They're still rolling
people. Green Bay knew they wouldn't have Devante Adams six months ago. They haven't solved it.
They have lost or underperformed in four of their five games.
And I've said this.
My Super Bowl bubble, Green Bay has been a fixture in my Super Bowl bubble for the last, you know, 10 years with Aaron Rogers.
In my Super Bowl bubble today, there are six teams, Buffalo, Baltimore, Kansas City, Philly, Tampa, San Francisco, and three that I think deserve mentioned.
Minnesota and Cincinnati, offensive coaches, very good quarterbacks, and a ton of weapons.
And Dallas's defense is the real deal.
I don't even have Green Bay on the periphery.
And it's interesting.
You can see great coaching.
Let's take this weekend.
You can see it.
I can see it.
You and I may struggle to find the difference between a C coach and a B-minus coach.
But this weekend, we saw great coaching.
Belichick and Jared Gough.
Gough, a very solid quarterback, completely flummoxed with the coverage.
Bill's been doing that now for 25 years.
You see great coaching.
You see great coaching with Kansas City
who's rebuilt their receiving core
and yet they're even better in the red zone now than they were last year.
You see the clever handoffs, the sweeps.
You saw the New York Giants coaching this weekend.
They still don't like three of their offensive line starters.
It's basically they were missing their top four receivers.
They go to face the Packers.
It's a one-dimensional offense,
Saquan, Barclay and no second gear,
and they dominate the second half.
You and I can see really effective coaching.
I never see it with Green Bay, ever.
Matt LaFleur was known as a guy that developed run games.
Why is Aaron Jones disappear?
Why is he underutilized?
Why is the defense underperforming?
Until this year, why are the special team so bad?
You can see effective coaching.
It's a wow, wow, Brian Daibel.
Whoa.
You're literally dominating the second half with a one trick pony offense.
Saquan Barclay, more Saquan Barclay, even more Saquan Barclay.
You can see Belichick's defense unraveled Jared Gough, like you look like a college quarterback.
Or you can see Andy Reid in the red zone without Tyreek Hill.
They're still productive.
They're still fast.
They're multi-functional.
That's my knock.
is that there is this thing in the media where we have already annoyeded
because he's 13 and 3 beating the lousy lions twice a year
and the bears twice a year.
That's where like five, four of his wins come every year off that garbage.
And then he splits with the only decent functional team in his division, Minnesota.
So he gets five wins in division every year.
13 and 3 is 9 and 8, 8, and 9 if you played in the better division.
And so this is not a shot at Matt LaFleur, but the ringer suggests that defense, that could be a coaching issue.
Show me the great coaching.
Situationally, with Aaron Rogers, one of the smartest guys in the league.
They've melted down the last two years in the playoffs at home.
As favorites, melted down.
So we do this all the time.
It's really hard to be great at anything.
Quarterback, wide receiver, coach.
We've just put Matt LaFleur in it because he keeps beating the bears and lions and splitting with a biking.
We just put them into the great coaching category.
I don't see it.
I don't see it this weekend.
I haven't seen it this year.
I haven't seen it in two years.
Going five and one, splitting with the Vikings and sweeping the lions and bears is not great coaching.
That's not it.
All right.
Around the corner, Nick Wright.
I wonder what he thinks about the chiefs being underdogs at home to Buffalo.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays and noon Eastern.
What do you get when you combine a three-time manager of the year at a three-time national sports writer of the year?
It's the Book of Joe podcast. Hey, this is Tom Verducci from Fox Sports, MLB Network and Sports Illustrated.

I can't wait for this, Joe. We're going to dive into what goes on in the dugout and behind the scenes in Major League Baseball.
Cars, wind, whatever else we want to talk about.

It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
They're finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more.
important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for
black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts,

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

All right, Nick Wright's going to be on next hour.
Joel Clat, top of the outer.
Nick had a little personal issue.
He'll be back with us next hour,
one hour from now, actually.
The big story today is Devonte Adams,
receiver for the Raiders,
who has a reputation as a great guy.
He's on the road.
It was a frustrating.
end and as he's walking off the field, the sky view looks like he just went up and pushed a photographer
to the ground. When you see the ground level shot behind Devante Adams, the cameraman walks in front of him,
he shouldn't put his hands on somebody or shove them. You can put your hands on somebody to move him out
of the way, but he shoved him. That guy went to the police. He filed a report. He said he's got a
concussion, and today missed a meter result for shoving in that situation. Obviously a pro athlete,
always keep your hands off fans.
Duh, I don't think it rises to this.
I think when you watch the ground level camera,
the kid walks right in front of him with his head down.
And Devante had his head down and he didn't know what it was,
somebody carrying something.
You know, it is what it is.
I don't think it rises.
Like right now on that video, that kid walked right in front of him.
So I don't think it rises to the level of misdemeanor assault,
but I don't work in a police department.
There's an animosity.
Pro athletes now make so much money and are.
so famous in America. There are a percentage of people that are looking to take advantage of them.
That's what it feels like to me.
If somebody would have apologized, I would have been, if I was the cameraman, I would have said,
oh, sorry for being in the way. But you don't have to be a jerk about it. That would be my
reaction. I wouldn't go to a police department or hospital. I wouldn't file anything.
That's just not my personality. I've had dust up with people before. Not like that.
But, you know, I mean, it's just my takeaway is be the better person. But keep your hands off people.
as the golden rule.
Okay, that's...
Yes.
Something crazy, but he had a minor headache and quote-unquote whiplash.
All right.
You know, we were thinking about this this morning.
I don't think Mike Tomlin's jobs in jeopardy, but right now in the NFL, I want to look this up
real quick.
I wrote this down this morning.
You can tell owners and GMs understand the issue.
Only 13 current coaches.
And I'm counting the interim coach in Carolina.
Only 13.
Really, it's 12.
of 32 are defensive coaches.
It goes to show you right now in the league what's happening with owners and GMs.
The league, the culture's changed, higher and offensive coach.
Tomlin has the worst quarterback in his division,
and he can't figure out the O line of the OC.
I'm not saying he's getting fired, but you can see what's happening in the league.
So we'll play a game here, playing with fire.
These are the coaches that people are mentioning could be in trouble.
And our job is to take a deep breath, eliminate the outrage, what's real, what's authentic, and what's counterfeit.
You ready to go?
I'm ready.
Okay.
That's rock and roll.
Ron Rivera.
Now, Ron Rivera, Washington, threw his quarterback under the bus this week?
I think that does not help him.
This is an organization that fires coaches regularly.
Four out of five fire emojis.
Remember, he can't get the quarterback right.
Alex Smith, Taylor Heineke, Kyle Allen, Dwayne Haskins, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Fitzpatrick,
Gilbert and now Carson Wentz.
And Dan Snyder, this is a chaos-driven organization,
finishing fourth.
And right now, they're not only the fourth best team in the division.
It's not close.
I think he's in some trouble.
The tough thing about Washington is, is it easy to replace Rivera?
Because who wants to work for Dan Snyder right now?
Well, it pays $5 million a year.
You'll get candidates.
All right.
Next up, Colin.
Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions.
Okay.
His reputation coming in is kind of a former player.
a little bit of a meat-hot head quotient, but everybody loved him.
But I think I'm starting to read Detroit media and listen to Detroit Press,
and they're kind of over the likable Dan Campbell.
I think it's a three.
The defense, now he inherited some of this, but it is the worst defense historically in the league.
The offense is nice, but this weekend, this showing against Belichick,
it was a high school coach and a JV coach.
I would say he's going to get the year, but he is headed in the wrong direction, three of five.
Now, listen, they're still paying Matt Patricia, the last coach, so you don't want to dump Campbell early.
They won't.
But he better show some progress here the rest of the way.
All right.
Next up, Colin, Josh McDaniels of the Raiders, one in four, can't win a close game.
See, I would say a one, first of all, this defense is not his issue.
It's been bad for seven straight years.
And the offense, Josh Jacobs is third in rushing.
Devante's eighth in receiving yards.
So, I mean, he's doing everything he can't.
All these losses have been in a tough division have been last second.
He's lost four games to good, solid teams close.
You can make an argument, as you said yesterday,
their schedule softens now in the next month.
They're going to start posting Ws.
But he's done a really good job with his.
side of the ball, which is always a real test. Does the coach know what he's doing? His side immediately
is very effective. But what hurts him, though, is they made the playoffs last year with an interim
coach and added Devante Adams. You can't backslide to like six wins. I think they're,
I still think they're an eight, nine win team. Even with this start. For Josh McDaniels. All right,
next up, Zach Taylor in Cincinnati went to the Super Bowl. I believe he got an extension. I don't
think it was earned. People are crazy. Zero. First of all, the Bengals don't fire coaches.
That's true. Secondly, he signed a new contract. Third, they lost.
three games all in the last play of the game.
Fourth, three other five games have been on the road.
Now they come home, the schedule.
And by the way, the first four quarters of this season, Joe Burrow had appendix surgery.
They were completely unprepared at the most important position.
Joe Burrow wasn't really ready to play.
So this team is fine.
They came back, took the lead in the Ravens, couldn't stop him defensively.
Zero for Zach Taylor.
Okay. Next up, Arthur Smith.
Okay. I think he's safe.
I'd say two just because, just because we don't know if he's a good coach.
They're the only NFL team 5 and 0 against the spread.
What does that mean?
They're overachieving.
Yes.
They are overachieving.
Also, do you know they have 37 big plays in the NFL?
That's sixth with Marcus Moriota.
So my argument, he is absolutely overachieving.
This is somewhere between a one and a two.
because he now he is in his second year, right?
This is not a, this is not, he didn't just sign an extension.
It's not Josh McDaniel.
He's in his second year.
You got to pick up some wins here.
But they are the only team in the league, 5 and 0 against the spread.
They are overachieving to this point.
So he is safe.
Still doesn't have a quarterback and I don't know if Desmond Reader is going to get a shot later.
Next up, Cliff Kingsbury in Arizona.
I need to say he signed a big money extension before the season and has a quarterback.
I would say only a two.
He did make the playoffs last year, and because his quarterback has been,
how can I say this, diplomatically high maintenance upstairs in the owner's chair,
there is a feeling that Cliff Kingsbury is dealing with a quarterback that is
more difficult and turbulent than most quarterbacks.
Also, they're the best fourth quarter,
have the best scoring differential in the league in the fourth quarter.
The team's fighting.
The team's playing well late.
They don't give up.
They're playing hard.
I put two, because if it does tank, this owner has a history of moving off guys quickly.
But if they're scoring, their point differential in the fourth is best in the league,
meaning this team has zero quit.
They are playing to the whistle.
And remember, after that season opening Bloodbath against the Chiefs, they've been pretty feisty, Colin.
I think this is a by team.
D'Andre Hopkins comes back soon.
You and I agree on that.
Raiders and Arizona are by teams.
Arizona for sure.
All right.
Next up, Nathaniel Hackett.
Colin, this is a guy who just got hired.
Fire away.
Five.
Yes.
Okay.
Most penalized team, situationally a disaster, the worst red zone offense with lots of
offensive talent.
So this is getting to a point.
You can blame anybody you want on this.
But Russell Wilson went from four straight years of highly effective quarterback play to
awful.
That doesn't happen.
He didn't have a major injury.
He's got a lat that's sore.
So I think this is a.
real. Listen, they are bad at things that usually get coaches in trouble. A penalty-clogged mess,
situationally inept, and his side of the ball is a problem. Josh McDaniels has figured out his
side quickly. He's losing close because of a defense. This defense is excellent. It's the offense
that's a mess. And Hackett's an offensive guy. By the way, as somebody on Twitter sent me,
they have six guys at about $71 million on IR or out for the season. So it ain't going to improve
for Hackett. I think he might be toast. Next up, Frank Reich in indie, big game for the Colts this weekend
against the Jaguars. I put him at a five and I like him, but they had seven Pro Bowl players last
year. It's an owner situation. Erse wanted Wentz out, so they got rid of Wence. You're not going
to stop. Matt Ryan's not getting younger. I think they're in big trouble. I think Frank Reich will
get a job immediately. I would hire him immediately. But this is this is a situation where the owner tends to be
impulsive. They don't have the solution
at quarterback. If they were in a better division,
they'd be in much bigger problems.
But right now, Tennessee and Houston's
offense are a mess, and Jacksonville's inconsistent.
So I think Reich's in trouble. I don't think he should
be. I think he's an excellent coach.
But sometimes
the owner
sees the world differently, and that's where
you're at. Another thing that hurts him, he's had a lot of
slow starts this year, and that's a sign
of an unprepared team, not
locked in. They can't protect Ryan. It's getting ugly
for Reich. And finally, Colin,
Brandon Staley of the L.A. Chargers.
Okay, here's my issue.
I'd give it three.
Now, the Spanos has hired him.
Spanos was their choice.
They thought he had a great interview.
He didn't go in as number one on the board.
He aced his interview, and the Spanos family hired him.
So they'll give him the rest of the year, obviously.
But this is the second straight year defensive coach has a bad defense.
Their defense is 30th.
So my warning, like Brian Dable of the Giants,
has immediately elevated the offense situationally,
schematically, adjustments.
Brian Daibald, you can see the coaching.
Giants aren't great, but Daebo's like, here's what I do.
I'm going to do.
McVeigh did this with golf.
Shanahan, he's a defensive coach.
They've got some really, they've got great edge rushers.
Nice.
They have Asante Samuel Jr.
They have a great safety.
Jay C Jackson.
I mean, they have at every level, they have pro bowl level players.
they're 30th in defense. And they were bad last year.
This is not a 30th defense personnel.
So you're at a three for Staley?
I've said before.
If you do not make the playoffs, back-to-back years with Justin Herbert,
where do you leave me as an owner?
Yeah.
The NFL added two playoff teams.
So they've added to, I'm in a division with the dysfunctional raiders.
Denver is reeling.
I'm not saying I have to beat Kansas City.
But at worst, this is a wild card.
How about this one?
Don't lose to Nathaniel Hackett on Monday night football at home at SoFi this coming week.
He better not lose that game.
Is that the Monday game?
That's the Monday.
I will be in attendance for that one.
Yes.
It's a good game.
Wow.
Chargers better.
Listen, Staley, I think three is a little light, Colin.
This is like a four and a half for me.
Because you know there's a lot of coaches who want that job.
Maybe some coaches moving to L.A.
To get up, get ready for.
I'm an offensive coach.
I get Justin Herbert.
few coaches.
We got a guy that comes on our show every week.
I'd call.
Should we be saying that?
