This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy,
not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer,
Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band
with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.
Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app,
Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
And for more behind the scenes,
follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84's big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians,
and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Oh, it is great to have you in, maybe not great for joy today, but my Celtics.
I even had pizza with spinach on it last night, a little green to celebrate.
Live in L.A., it's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening.
Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1.
Well, listen, you were the number one.
seed. It's a heck of a season. You still got a little life. We got a puncher's chance.
You just don't have any punch. I mean, it's like there is some plastic wrap over the hoop or
something. They cannot buy a bucket. You guys are like the boxer that doesn't have a knockout punch
and you have one round left and the only way to win is by knockout and that's not what you do.
Yep. That's a good description. You don't have enough rounds left. So,
reinforcements might be on the way, Joelle and B.
Right.
So let's start with this.
Generally, this is the way it works.
Not all the time, but generally.
Baseball, football, basketball, soccer, doesn't matter the sport.
It doesn't even matter the level.
High school, college, pro.
Championship teams have a majority of their best players in their prime, like Boston.
So this is going to be the inevitable conclusion of this series.
Not over yet.
It will be.
Tatum's in his prime, just got into it.
Jalen Brown in his prime, just moved into it.
Marcus Smart, I think a limited offensive player's been in his prime for about two years,
but he's in the middle of it.
Robert Williams, a limited offensive player, but defensively, he's in his prime.
Meanwhile, P.J. Tucker's 37.
Kyle Lowry's washed at 36, and Jimmy Butler's knees are 45 years old.
Okay, so they just don't have, they need a knockout and they don't have a punch in two games in this series that Tyler Hero didn't play, a bench player.
Hell of a bench player, but a bench player, Miami scored 80 and 82.
When a bench player missing chokes out your offense, you're not a championship team.
I didn't buy Miami all year.
I have the NBA package too.
I watch a lot of halves, quarters, and games.
I didn't get Miami.
They don't have a dominant number one score.
Not only do the Celtics have the best number one score.
Tatum, they have the best number two score next to their number one score,
Jalen Brown, who's also a really good defensive player.
And culture and passion, I'm a huge fan of that.
I've been talking about that stuff before people talked about that stuff on radio and TV.
I'm culture passion guy.
Belichick, Popovich.
Even those guys would admit you need dudes.
You need dudes.
And Miami needs another dude.
You can't lose a bench player.
be like, yeah, without him, we can't score.
I like Bamanao.
He's a defensive player.
Stop trying to sell me that he's Janus or MB.
Those guys can drop 35 any night.
Bam scored a lot of points in one game in this series when Robert Williams for the Celtics
was out.
And so, for the record, Boston also has a very good culture.
It's not like we have good culture against bad culture.
We have two really good cultures.
The difference is one team has a lot of flexibility.
Jason Tatum can shoot, create.
defend. Jalen Brown is twitchy in athletic and can create and he can defend. And Marcus Smart's
the defensive player of the year. They have multiple players who can guard multiple guys and multiple
ways and trap and they can just do so many different things. Their versatility is so much great.
I mean, Tyler Hero's going to shoot. That's kind of what he does. And Duncan Robinson can shoot.
And Bam out of bayou can defend. But once you put a good defender on Bam, that offense dries up.
this reminds me.
I was thinking about this, watching them, that Pat Riley is the architect in Miami,
just like he was the architect in Los Angeles.
And Pat's brilliant, and he's built a lot of different teams, a lot of different ways.
We saw him put together with the Heedles.
And that's probably easier than building other teams because they're just so darn talented.
But this Miami team is so much like one of his mid-dermuda.
early 90s
Knicks teams that he built,
which is they play hard,
they're tough,
they're passionate,
and basically have one score.
That was Ewing.
This is Butler.
They got one really A-list score.
Well, Jimmy's knees,
I mean,
Jimmy's played hard for a long time,
and he's great,
but this inflammation of the knee thing,
this has been happening
throughout the playoffs last couple of years.
And here's the other thing.
Frankly, let's be fair to the Miami Heat here.
Folks, they lost. LeBron, Dwayne, Wade, and Bosch in a couple years, it's kind of hard to replenish
from that. I mean, the Lakers, have been trying to replicate versions of Shaq and Kobe and Phil forever.
It's hard. I mean, how long after Michael and Pippen left and Phil left Chicago?
That'll probably never happen again. That's a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
LeBron in his prime, D-Wade, end of his prime, Bosch in his prime, and all these guys.
running in to jump and be part of the Hedels, they'll probably never have that team again.
And then when they all leave, they're trying to replicate it.
It's impossible.
And so, and I think another reason it was really important for Boston to win.
It's so much easier when you're a parent.
If you tell your kids, this is the way the world works, and then they can see it happen.
And they're like, oh, mom and dad are smart.
It's much harder to tell your kids, this is how you should act.
And people that don't act like that succeed, right?
And so Boston has been selling patience, patience, patience, patience.
We're not going to give up assets for Paul George.
Patience, patience, patience.
And I was one of those people.
I'm like, yeah, okay, show me the money.
I'll buy patience.
I'll put money away for the 401k, but it's got to grow a little.
Got to grow a little.
You got to show me the money.
This was a show me the money moment last night.
It's like, okay.
Okay, now we're going to get to the finals with this team.
And I do think they match up with Golden State.
Dallas well. But at some point, and patience is a virtue, I'm not a real patient person.
I'd be the first to say, one of my many weaknesses, but you can sell me on patience, but at some
point you got to say, well, this is what we get for it. Well, last night, it's like the winner
writes the book. It's like, see, the patience. Paul George, he's not in the finals.
All those guys you wanted us to go get, they're not in the finals. We're going to be in the finals
if we wouldn't want a more game.
And Jalen Brown, you just got to take a deep breath now.
Boston has a tendency.
We saw that.
They've had some bad quarters.
They got blown out at home.
Take a deep breath, but Jalen Brown afterwards.
This is a great opportunity.
Leave everything on the floor.
You don't want any feelings of regret.
We got an opportunity to do something with this group that's special.
So let's not take that for granted.
Just breathe, relax.
Sometimes we can be a little bit too tense
because we know how important.
know these moments are, but just come out and play our game, and we'll be fine.
Okay, here's another story. You ever see a story?
And you think it's bad news, but it's actually good news.
So this story came out. I think it was yesterday on the show, Joy.
A reporter for the New York Daily News, fine paper, Kristen Winfield said,
KD and the Brooklyn Nets have not talked since the end of the season.
Woo!
Oh, that is bad news.
He is out of there.
I think the opposite.
I think it's great news for Brooklyn.
What the organization in Brooklyn is doing,
and they've got some really smart people there.
This is really shrewd.
They're protecting Kevin Durant.
Because now, when they come out and make moves with Kyrie,
Kevin can say, bro, I didn't talk to me.
What are you talking about?
Kevin Durant now has total
deniability in this situation.
Sean Marks came at.
KDs can be like Kyrie.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't know.
These guys are doing what they're doing, man.
I haven't even talked to these guys.
Sometimes a Hollywood studio after a bomb,
if they've got a long deal with an actor,
they've got to protect the actor,
and the studio will take the hit on it.
Yeah, that was our fault.
We love our actor.
That was a bad script.
Sometimes you've got to take one.
for the star to protect the star.
This is Brooklyn taking one to protect KD.
Because KD is the best player.
Katie's committed.
Katie plays his butt off.
Katie's a great teammate.
Katie's a first ballot hall of famer.
He's been let down.
So you've got to protect KD here.
And the way to protect him is make sure everybody thinks we haven't talked.
So when you do have to, as a story came out yesterday,
Net's unwilling to give Kyrie Irving long-term contract.
I can assure you, KD. Deep Down is aware of what they're doing,
but he's got deniability.
Remember when Sean Marks came out and said this?
We're looking for.
We're looking for guys that want to come in here, be part of something bigger than themselves,
play selfless, play team basketball, and be available.
And that goes not only for Kyrie, but for everybody here.
My opinion, KD knew that was coming.
probably a few hours or days before it was coming.
Sean Marks, hey, I'm going to come out.
I'm going to lay it on the line and KD approved.
Signed that check.
The bottom line for Brooklyn, protect KD, insulate KD, keep AD, make KD happy.
That is the mission.
It should be the mission.
Initially, listen, KD can be sensitive.
Okay, so what?
Deal with it.
A lot of guys are sensitive.
A lot of people are sensitive.
Sometimes stars are sensitive.
Stars also get criticized more than everybody else.
I can live with all that sensitivity stuff.
I wish he could confront Draymond Green.
I wish he was still a warrior, but he's not.
That's life.
But let's not make the same mistake again.
Understand you've got to protect sometimes your star from bad actors around him.
And so I think this news that Katie hasn't talked to the Nets is actually smart and shrewd and great news and gives him deniability.
Because I think this franchise has to eventually move off.
Kyrie Irving, just like they moved off James Hard.
And I don't know what's going to happen to Ben Simmons, but in a couple years they may have to move off him.
The only guy I'm completely all in on, absolutely, beginning, middle end is KD, and now he's got
deniability.
Sometimes you don't want everybody to know that you know everything.
Sometimes saying, I don't know, or no, is a really good place to be.

waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes, I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years.
from black people in American history.

Now entering the No Bull Zone, sponsored by credible great rates.
None of the Bull.
So story out today, another juicy Lakers story.
Remember, all Laker stories get out.
All of them.
I mean, you ever had a friend that can't keep a secret?
That's the Lakers times a thousand.
Everything gets out with the Lakers.
We used to have a president that had like a leak a day.
That's a bad president.
The president before him had very few leagues.
That's a good president.
Well-run organizations for 20 years, the Patriots, nothing got out.
The Spurs, nothing got out.
Everything gets out with the Lakers.
There's so many agendas.
It is so political.
Everything gets out.
Here's the latest to get out.
Phil Jackson and Kurt Rambas want to hire Darwin Ham.
And that Rob Polinka LeBron and myself want Doc Rivers.
Yes, I'm going to insert myself into the story.
since everybody else gets an opinion, I get one too.
I want Doc Rivers.
I'm not anti-Darvenham.
I like to see ex-athlete to work hard, do it the right way,
become an assistant, work their way up.
I like those guys to get breaks.
I think it's cool.
I really do.
I like to see ex-athletes.
I don't necessarily like, like Steve Nash.
I'm a player.
I retire.
I head coach.
I'd like to see a work put a few years in in Dusseldorf scouting players.
But whatever, stars get some, you know, special treatment.
But the Lakers, as you're seeing, can't keep a secret.
So whoever gets the job, this is what you're entering.
Gossipy, political, this is what the Lakers are.
And there's so many people that have Jeannie Buses' ear.
She still talks to Magic and Rob Polinka and Phil Jackson and the Rambus family and LeBron and Rich Paul and Maverick Carter.
She's taking all those calls.
And I know a lot of those people and I like all those people.
But this is a job for somebody, and it's always been like this with the Lakers.
God, when they had Shaq and Kobe, it doesn't even before that.
With Magic, you had Riley and West and Phil and Kobe and his agent and Shaq.
And I mean, the commissioner at one point had to step in with the Lakers because they didn't want them to get Chris Paul because it would be unfair.
This is a big brand.
Nothing is private.
It's all public.
I think that's a lot for Darvinham to come into.
I think Darwin Ham would be better.
You know, go, you know, I like guys that get a first job in Memphis, you know, maybe in New Orleans or something, where you can, Portland's a good place.
This is a big city, a lot of politics, a lot of reporters, a lot of agendas, a lot of people are calling Jeannie Bus, and she takes the calls, as she should.
but there's a lot of people who feel they own a little slice of the Lakers in this city,
from what I can tell, this is a hard job.
And Doc Rivers, it's, for the record, Frank Vogel, classic example, came in, did not want Westbrook.
They said, you're getting Westbrook.
He couldn't make it work and he got fired.
That's the Laker job.
So you don't, Bill Parcells once quit as coach of the Patriots.
He said, if I'm going to make the dinner, I want to select some of the groceries.
You will not be allowed to select any of the groceries here.
And by the way, sometimes the Lakers will say, I want a perfect pasta.
And they'll give you bad ingredients.
Forget competent ingredients.
Sometimes you'll be forced to have Westbrook and just do it.
I think this is a job for Doc Rivers.
And nobody likes Doc, right?
I keep hearing it.
I'm his PR agent.
Chris Broussard yesterday.
He's hammered on Doc Rivers too.
Doc, unfortunately, Colin, has not proven to be really a difference-making coach.
Willie was getting to the second round with Brett Brown.
And they think, okay, let's bring in Doc.
Let's go further.
They lost the freaking Atlanta.
Atlanta.
I mean, Atlanta is not a good team.
And so Doc hasn't gotten them past the second round.
So, no, I don't think Doc's the guy there.
Of the names that have been put out there, I would go with Darvin Hamm.
And I get it.
He's a young coach.
He's a rookie coach, right?
We don't know how he would be.
I'll tell you this, though, knowing Darwin, he's a strong personality.
He's got a strong presence.
but he's very likable.
Okay.
Likeable is great.
Not all the people surrounding the Lakers are always likable.
Just understand, when I'm pro doc, who's won 62% of his games in the last decade,
mostly in the Better West, Eric Spolster's won 59% in the weaker east,
and Eric Spolster is excellent, and he had LeBron in his prime,
and D. Wade in his prime, and Chris Barge in his prime.
You win 62% in a decade, you can coach.
And as I've said before, Doc had a clipper team that the media confused as a great team
when they were just highly entertaining team.
Golden State was building their dynasty.
They were much faster to get into analytics.
And they were better, much quicker and much better.
So don't hire Doc.
That's fine.
But understand now, in terms of numbers of coaches hired, this will be the sixth and 11 years.
Are all those coaches dummies?
Really?
You tell me all these coaches that fail with the Lakers.
They're all dummies.
They all suddenly can't coach.
They moved to Los Angeles.
They're blinded by the 72-degree sun, and they can't coach.
Maybe it's the environment here that's hard.
So go big.
If you look at the history of the Lakers, who succeeded.
Bill Sharman was big.
Pat Riley, big personality, strong personality.
Phil Jackson.
It works in the city.
There's a lot of bad actors.
There's a lot of egos.
You've got to have a little bit of a shield that you can accept it.
You can take it.
You can take the hits.
You've got the self-esteem.
You've got the years of experience.
But this is not an easy job.
Not at all.
And you've got a contract with Westbrook where your first year on the job,
maybe just an acknowledgement, we know we're going to be bad.
Because if Westbrook's on the team and you're forced to make it work, it's a bad team.
in the tougher conference. Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, the Browns and Panthers had discussed a potential trade for Baker-Mayfield about a month ago.
I saw that this morning.
And the deal ended up falling through because the two sides couldn't agree on the money,
the amount of Baker's guaranteed salary that would have to be paid by the Browns.
Baker is owed $18.8 million this season.
Well, according to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Charlotte Observer,
the Panthers wanted the Browns to pay 13 to 14 million of that salary.
So that would have kept Carolina's obligation around 5 or 6 million,
which is a steal for Baker Mayfield.
18 million for Baker Mayfield is also very affordable,
but not when you have other...
I mean, 5 million is...
Quarterbacks on the roster.
And you're paying Sam Darnold.
So basically, very few teams want him.
The one that did wanted him for $5 million.
Well, yeah, because they're already paying Sam Darnold.
and, you know, if you're looking at, you know, wins above replacements with Baker Mayfield,
what are you winning two more games with Baker Mayfield over Sam Darnold?
Maybe.
Maybe.
We know that Baker can't elevate a average roster.
And this is an average roster.
So obviously the Browns have Deshawn's five-year, $230 million guaranteed contract.
How they have placed that around the cap and such is more complicated.
We know that NFL contracts aren't quite a strong.
straight up. Obviously his is fully guaranteed, but they can move other things around to possibly
absorb. And they've discussed wanting to absorb some of Baker's contract. Originally, they did not
want to pay any of Baker's contract. But now it's looking like no one is going to make a move for
Baker unless they get him at a discounted rate. Also, the Browns have no leverage, which is
what these other teams know. They know they want to move off of Baker Mayfield. They know they don't
want the Browns do not want him on the roster once the season starts at the beginning of the league
year and they're trying to move him. You should have moved him before you signed Deshawn Watson.
Now, obviously, all of that came together very quickly. But that's what the job is. Once you have
Deshawn Watson on a $230 million guaranteed contract, if I'm another team, I'm like, yeah, I'm happy
to take me from my field, but I'm not paying for him. Why would I pay for him? You're going to
move him. You're going to do it. You could actually, I mean, the truth of the matter is, if you
didn't really have, like, let's say you're Atlanta and you thought to yourself, okay, I'll pay five million
and bucks for him and give you a fifth. The truth is, if he played well, you could probably
get a fourth for him. You could actually use him if you want to do as an asset, because I do
think Baker, in a stable environment, can win games. If you saw Baker play three straight games
in a row before the trade deadline, you know it is, Joy. This league falls in love fast.
If Baker went to an Atlanta in like three straight weeks, he won twice, but he looked darn
good. You get a second, third round pick out of him like that. This league is desperate.
to get desperate during the season as well.
In season desperation, there's nothing like it in sports.
In season, NFL desperation.
There's always some desperate team during preseason because inevitably someone is going
to get hurt.
That's just the way the league goes.
And something will happen midseason that will cause a team to be desperate.
Darnold is getting $18.59 million this season guaranteed.
So that's also why Caroline is like, why are we going to pay two quarterbacks $18
million dollars who are you know baker mayfield is better than sam darnold but not that much better
like that doesn't financially make any sense for carolina if they were paying for somebody who was
good to great for that money then sure because you have an allotted budget for that position but
that doesn't make any sense for them so but again the browns have no leverage and this is the position
that they put themselves in so tray lance we think is set to become the starting quarterback for the
49 he is going to be the starter and he's
said he's feeling a lot more comfortable this year.
Last year I was swimming a little bit.
It was hard to not be drafted and then 10 days later, rookie minicamp.
So just trying to keep up, keep up with the other guys in the room.
But yeah, I mean, it's, I feel very, very different this year for sure.
For me, it's, you know, I want to keep getting better.
I mean, that's my focus right now.
I mean, the leadership stuff is, I mean, it's just being a good guy in the locker room.
But that's stuff that's earned.
That's not really anything I can say to be a leader.
But, you know, I'm just trying to be a good guy, be a good teammate.
I have my teammates back at the end of the day.
He certainly is quarterbackial.
He has the presence to be a starting quarterback.
The physical stuff and the present stuff and the smart stuff,
what I got to see is can you throw the ball accurately?
That's really the thing for me, Joy.
No, and that's a big thing in the NFL.
That's right.
Now, I also think young quarterbacks have to get the confidence as well.
You can have the skill to be accurate,
but there's a lot that's being thrown at you,
and you're focusing on running your plays and your offense,
and now you're dealing with NFL defenses coming at you.
He's very raw player, but I think it's going to work.
I think it is too.
Okay, and I'll tell you this.
I think he has a better chance to work than Justin Fields,
even though this division's tougher.
Why?
Because I never trust upstairs with Chicago.
Oh, yeah, definitely.
And I love Justin Fields.
I love Justin Fields.
But do you feel better than 50% of the work?
The only reason it's not going to work to me is
not just in Fields' talent. It's Chicago.
Well, that's my, yeah.
I mean, so the Niners, I trust upstairs and the coach.
Of course.
So if they're even.
And their system doesn't rely on a quarterback.
No, no, you can, it really is if he's an accurate thrower of the football.
Because I see the size, the mobility, I'm told he's smart, he's quarterbackial, it'll work.
Can he throw 64?
He doesn't have to be a 69% guy.
He's got to be 64-ish in this day and age, and he's like 59 now.
He's 57.7.
Yeah, that's bad.
Like, that's like, you're getting into Tebow Territ.
He's got to get rid of the ball faster.
He started two games, went one-in-one.
He played in six.
He completed 41 of 71 passes, 57.7 completion percentage,
and had five touchdowns and two interceptions,
while also running for 168 yards in touchdown.
So he has the physical element of it as well,
which Jimmy Garoppolo doesn't have,
obviously being constantly injured.
He's just not somebody that you expect to do a lot of running.
Trey Lance has that ability as well.
I just think it's his development thing,
but that's why.
that's why I'm out of it.
I understand that the situation was different with him last year
because he was very raw,
but you want to get them developing as early as possible.
So I do think he's going to be the starter all season long,
but Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the team.
So the Cardinals are trying to work out a deal with Kyla Murray this offseason.
Hopefully they do it because I have no interest in talking about
Kyla Murray's contract for another year, guys.
Don't make us do that.
Yeah.
It's very frustrating.
Please sign quickly.
Please do this.
It's torture.
Yesterday, the Pat Bakkefee shows,
Steve Kime, the GM of the
Cardinals went on and gave an update on the situation. He said, I just think it's a timing thing.
Anyone who has done it before has done it anywhere from July to September. It's no different for
us. We know he's under contract for another year. And also the fifth year option in 2023.
He is our future. We feel that strongly. I feel like we'll be able to get something done
this summer. He is set to make around $5.5 million in 2022. There has been a little bit of drama,
a little bit of spice around this situation. A little too public for my taste. I tend to be very
conservative socially.
He has a right to want more money.
He is the future of the team.
I don't,
this is not a position once you have the guy where I feel like you got to argue about
being cheap.
Now, obviously it's a salary cap league.
You want to try and be as flexible as possible.
Yeah.
But I maintain this as a position you should want to pay.
Like teams get so caught up in how are we going to pay,
how are we going to pay the quarterback,
how are we going to play this position?
Like, forget all that.
If you don't have the quarterback,
it doesn't matter what other positions you pay.
And you already know that if you're the Cardinals
because you had Josh Rosen and it was a disaster.
So budget for the quarterback.
It's like when you're building your life, right?
Like you got your family.
Like budget for your home.
It's something you should set aside money for.
My sports take on this, I'm going to lean on my wife who doesn't like sports.
So Ann has said before, if you like something, buy it,
don't worry about the timing.
Do you like that and do you want it and need it?
Yeah, just buy it.
Do you like Kyler Murray?
everybody's trying to like buy the house at the right time or get the best deal on the car and we all want to get the deal
sure buy a stock you can't time the market with stocks do you think it's fundamentally a good company
and consider consider the salary cap your budget in this there you go can you afford him yep all right
let's buy him let's let's get him out if you can time this thing we we don't want to sign too early
does he make you viable yep okay next check write the check and you have evidence that the longer
that this goes on the better it is because he keeps getting it's good to do you
getting better. Because he's going to keep getting better. And then he has more leverage. That's why
Dak ended up getting the contract. If Dallas had just extended him and just given him
the upfront money, they wouldn't be in this situation right now. Good stuff. Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News.
Saw a story yesterday. The Raiders are working out Colin Kaepernick. I think I am the only living
American sportscaster. I'm the exception on Colin Kaepernick. I'm the only one that doesn't
have a strong opinion. My reaction was, all right, he hasn't played in five years. That year he was
one in ten and replaced by Blaine Gabbard. All right, he gets a workout. I don't think he's a
franchise guy. I don't think he can take five years off his quarterback and be a franchise guy.
He may be a bridge guy, I doubt it. I think he's a backup who doesn't want to be a backup.
The media in America is always self-indulgent. We as a general rule in the
media lack discipline.
Nobody wants a celebrity backup.
Cam Newton, nobody was interested.
Baker Mayfield, nobody's interested.
Johnny Mansell, nobody's interested.
Tim Tebow, nobody was interested.
Celebrity backup is not a thing.
Controversial backup is not a thing.
Now, I don't get all the controversy around Colin Kaepernick.
Again, I feel like I'm on an island.
I don't have a really strong opinion about Colin Kaepernick.
I did when he beat Green Bay and he was running around, I was like,
this is something.
Like, is this the future of quarterback?
Not the most beautiful thrower, but I remember him beating Aaron Rogers.
I remember watching that game thinking.
I kind of fell into it.
I was like, is that the future a quarterback?
Six, five guys that run around.
They're a little Josh Allen.
You're like, and then it just, whatever, the commitment, was he distracted?
Whatever reasons.
I've got my theories.
It just didn't work.
It kind of eroded.
He got bent.
but the media is going to make him a celebrity.
And they're going to over-interview him and over-discuss him.
And nobody wants to back up who's a celebrity, who's got 35 cameras around him.
And so I believe Colin Kaepernick's greatest chance to start is that we just let him work out and see if it works and not talk about him much.
He views himself as a starter.
He said that in the podcast.
That's fine.
He's still a dreamer.
I like that.
But the Raiders just signed Derek.
at Cardo an extension. It was not going to be with the Raiders. And my guess is,
very, listen, Baker Mayfield doesn't have a market. And he just won a playoff game against
Pittsburgh and he's not been out of the league for five years. And he doesn't have much of a
market. I don't think Kaepernick has much of a market. But I like guys getting workouts.
I mean, two weeks ago, though, he was on a podcast. He views himself as a starter.
I know I have to find my way back in. So, yeah, if I have to come in,
the backup, that's fine. But that's not where I'm, that's not where I'm staying. And when I prove
that I'm a starter, I want to be able to step on the field as such. I have no problem with that.
I mean, I kind of like my athletes to have dreams. I don't think, you know, I don't think it's
going to happen. And it's not going to happen with the Raiders, because they got a new coach
who likes Derek Carr so much. They made sure they got him in an extension. And I think Derek Carr is
a top 10, 12 quarterback in the league. But what's going to happen here is the media is going to
overcover. I know what you're saying right now. Well, you're covering him. Yes, here's my opinion
on the workout. I mean, if I had my druthers, I wouldn't have to talk about Westbrook's
shooting, Dax contract ever again, and Kaepernick being a quarterback in the NFL. But nobody wants
a celebrity backup. Nobody wants a controversial backup. And you can say he's not controversial,
but, you know, the socks, some of the social stands are going to get people. I mean, everything
in America. Everybody's outraged by anything they don't agree with. So I wish him well.
It's kind of a meh.
I hope the media has some control over their self-indulgence.
And good for him, having dreams, coming back, working out.
But I always find myself with Colin Kaepernick saying,
I just, I don't care as much as everybody else cares.
I care about Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert,
and Kyner Murray.
That's the guys I want to talk about.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.

Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about cracking the A.
To be clear, 84 was big to me
Not just because of crack
I'm down to talk about crack on day
But just so y'all know
I mean at this point
Mark this is the second episode
Where we've discussed crack
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line
We also have AIDS on the table right now
So
Thank you for finishing that sentence
And yes
I don't think there's a more important year
For black people
Really?
Yeah
For me it's one of the most important years

Chris Manix has covered the Celtics in the league for almost 20 years.
Senior Writers Sports Illustrated.
There's a podcast for the volume as well on boxing.
He's great at that.
So I said to start my show today, this feels like the inevitable conclusion of a team with its best players in their prime against the team that's been kind of smartly thrown together by Pat Riley with a lot of limitations.
And I've got to be honest, Robert Williams has been the unsung hero in this series.
I'll start with that.
You know him well.
You know what he's dealing with.
He doesn't get talked about a lot.
He's shut bam down.
That's what it feels like to me.
Yeah, look, he is a great defensive big man. And his presence was really felt in that second
half when Miami, which has been really limited offensively on the perimeter, tried to run
a lot of stuff through BAM. And Rob Williams was just there locking him up. Now, one of the
evolutions of Rob Williams this year is again, a credit to IME Yodoka. Rob has had something
of a reputation for being a little soft, not being willing to play through pain as much as some
of his previous coaches would have liked. Ime Adoka came in from day one and basically called
Robert Williams out on that, said you've got to play through some of the nicks and bumps along the
way. And I think that's manifested itself in the series. I mean, Rob Williams came back from knee
surgery in about a month. Like, that's impressive. And he has played through swelling and pain as many
games he possibly can. I honestly believe, Colin, Robert Williams would not have played in a series
like this in years past. He has been toughened up, I think, this year. And because of that, he has
the Celtics on the brink of going to the finals. Yeah, BAM's average in 10 a game when he's on,
when he plays, and he scored 31 when he didn't. So he's not going to get a lot of credit. He is an
absolute force inside. And like the rest of the Celtics, he can defend. And we were talking about
this with Jason Tatum. I said the other day, if there were three guys I could build around in
league. And it's a 10-year window. So they've got to be playing in 10 years. I said, I'd start with
Janus. I'd probably go Luca, then Tatum. I got no pushback on Janus and Luca who have clear
holes in their game. I don't see one with Tatum. You watch him every night. I defend, create,
shoot. Late in the game, he's a great free throw shooter. Is there a hole in his game? I don't see it.
not really and any rough edges he might have are going to be smoothed out over the course of time.
I mean, there are sometimes when he goes up against high-level defenses like he has against Milwaukee and now Miami,
he can get sped up a little bit.
He can get out of his comfort zone, have poor shot selection.
He can get, and still gets a little too whiny with the officials.
That's been a problem for him all season long.
It's been a problem for him in this series.
But these are not things that won't be wrong.
rectified just over the passage of time. Jason Tatum is in his mid-20s and he has all the tools.
I mean, he was already a great score from really the first year he played. This year,
he has added playmaking, passing to his game. He's become an above-average to even higher
level defender. He's got every tool in the box, if you will, to be a great player. And anything
that you might consider a weakness with him will not be part of his game in the next year or two.
So I agree with your list.
Janice for sure.
Luke, I think for sure.
You want to make an Embed argument because he's still in his 20s, maybe.
But I think Jason Tatum, because this league has trended towards versatile wing players,
should be right there on that list.
You know, it's interesting that so much, like Carmelo Anthony was gifted,
didn't have a ton of self-awareness.
Westbrook deals with this.
And I think it hurt his career.
Self-awareness is underrated.
Andrew Wiggins was always talented.
but I remember watching him play two games in L.A., one against the Clippers, one against the Lakers.
He'd score 24, and I never remembered a basket.
There wasn't a lot of dog.
And I'm like, he's just a, he's a two or a three, but his talented is a one.
And I watch him in this series, and I think about this with the Celtics, and I think about this with Luca.
Wiggins is a problem because he is long and twitchy.
You could put him on Tatum.
You're not going to stop him.
He just make things uncomfortable.
I think he's been very effective against him.
Luca. We talk so much about Steph. I think Wiggins is really an important player going forward.
Your thoughts about what he has done for Golden State? He's an incredibly important player because
he is likely going to draw the top defensive assignment on the perimeter in every series
that he's going to be. And he's been that way with Luca. If it's Boston next round,
he'll certainly be that way with Jason. I think he's taken some pressure off of Clayton.
Thompson because of that. If you look at some of the defensive assignments that Clay has drawn
since he's come back from injury, Steve Kerr has gone out of his way to avoid the quick players.
He's trying to put him on bigger guys, you know, dealt with some physicality there as opposed to
risking, you know, Clay getting blown by because he's not as movable coming off that knee
injury. Andrew Wiggins is a very good defensive player, is capable of guarding on multiple levels,
can guard multiple different positions. I mean, he's,
He's invaluable for what that team does defensively, and he gives Steve Kerr just another weapon.
If you want to go more physical defensively, you can deploy Draymond.
If you want to try Clay Thompson out there, who's been a great defender in the past, you can use him.
But Wiggins, he is kind of the head of the stake with what that team does on the perimeter defensively.
Listen, the Lakers don't have an easy, solvable answer to their mess.
I would choose Doc Rivers over other candidates simply because I think it's a political job, it's a difficult job, it's a rebuild.
I think LeBron probably likes him.
I'm not saying this is a hard job for anybody, but Frank Vogel got bulldozed.
I don't think Doc would allow that because you've got to pay him a lot and he's got a reputation.
And I do think he's won 62% of his games in the last decade.
Spolster's a great coach 159.
Like he can coach.
We just don't like how it ends.
Your argument for or against Doc is his name's now surfacing.
Yeah.
First of all, I don't see Doc going anywhere.
I guess Darrell Mori could walk back what he said at that postseason press conference,
but he was pretty definitive that Doc would be back.
If there was going to be movement within the Lakers and Doc, I would have expected them to be some.
Right now, right now the Lakers are zeroing in on a group of finalists that doesn't include Doc Rivers.
And honestly, Colin, even if Doc was available, and I have a lot of respect for Doc as a coach,
I would choose Darbinham.
I would.
And maybe that's kind of recancy bias.
with me having watched EMA Udoka, who nobody was really after the last few years, come off
that Brooklyn bench, and out-coach everybody.
I mean, he out-coached Steve Nash in that first round by a mile.
He out-coached Mike Boodenholzer in the second round.
And Eric Spolstra, many would say, is the best coach in basketball, best strategic coach
in basketball.
He threw a bunch of different stuff at the Celtics in game five.
Emeo-Dok counters for all of it.
And I think Darwin-Ham is kind of cut out of that EMA-U-Doka cloth.
He's an ex-player who will get the respect of the guys on the floor because of that.
And I think he's got one of those multi-track minds that's going to make him an excellent head coach.
So I think Doc's the easy choice.
But if you're looking for that diamond in the rough to get the next EMA you doca, I think Darbinham would be it.
Always full of great insight and information.
Well connected as always Chris Mannix.
Good seeing you, bud.
You got it, Colin.
All right.
Chris Mannix.
Knows his boxing too.
Great boxing guy.
I always have a soft spot for boxing.
First job in Vegas, soft spot for boxing for big fights.
Yeah, we'll see.
Lake your job is, it's not like a lot of jobs.
You know, I've said this.
I remember one time being in the Northeast and going to a Yankee game and getting a pass
and being around the batting cage.
And you're like, this many people cover the Yankees every game?
It's just like being the quarterback for the Cowboys or the coach of the Cowboys is not like any other job.
Yeah, it's just there's a lot of stuff.
There's a lot of, a lot of mouse to feed in some of these jobs.
And it's like like.
Stuff is a good way.
A lot of stuff with the likers.
All right, hour two on a Thursday.
